“Growing up in a household of craftspeople, with my father working at home on a variety of design projects, mostly in low relief, involving the use of many different materials, I mixed my first bowl of Plaster of Paris at the age of six. The die was cast, although of course, I did not know it at the time. But, as time has passed, I have been increasingly fascinated by the way in which different materials have given my sculptures their distinct being.

After concept, for me, material is the beginning of the process of making. My concerns as a sculptor have always been working on the relationships that come to exist between the forms that I create and the spaces revealed by their structures.

For years, my works were fully three-dimensional and related to architecture and landscape as subject matter, but gradually I have become less and less interested in subject and I have tried to rid my works of any direct allusion to my environment, except in an abstract or concrete way. I have chosen to use the geometry that underpins the structure of the world as a central theme, in addition to this removal of everyday imagery. However, I must confess that I have been influenced by an architectural phenomenon, the squint, which occurs as a sloping-sided hole between a side chapel and the chancel in medieval churches; its purpose is to allow viewing from one to the other. As the rectilinear opening is larger at one end than the other, it causes some unusual optical effects, similar to, as a child, one looked down a cardboard tube and the world appearing somehow brighter and sharper. This is territory I continue to explore.

Also, in more recent years, I have become increasingly interested in the space that exists between ourselves and the walls that surround us as we live our lives. Consequently, relief objects are presently my main concern hung directly onto walls of all kinds.

Throughout these differing journeys, colour has been important as a means of changing the dynamics and emotional impact of these reliefs, and coupled with reflective surfaces like silver leaf and mirror, has caused the viewer to become visually disorientated and not sure what he/she is seeing.”

“Seascapes, landscapes, and the world around me are the studio I use for my photographic work. I find freedom and inspiration to create my interpretations of the natural elements and scenic vistas at these locations.

The Landscape is an exciting and challenging environment to work in, for it is constantly changing with the light of the day and the changing seasons. On many occasions, I have revisited my favorite locations repeatedly throughout the year and found them to be completely different in their appearance, from the sand on the beach, the depth of water in the streams, or the light striking the rocks. This environment and the many faces it reveals bring me endless excitement for creating my art.

I work exclusively in black and white. This medium best relates the Landscape’s shapes, lines, and tones and more fully captures what I am viewing when I look at a scene. I find the creation of photographic art today to offer endless possibilities for creativity and the making and sharing of visual art.

Educated as a historian, Mario Bartolini is a retired Canadian public servant who has had a lifelong passion for Roman history and Roman mosaic art. He is fascinated by antique mosaic art and actually recreates Roman-inspired mosaics. His focus is on taking existing ancient Roman art pieces and reproducing them at a smaller scale using 2.5 cm square Portuguese porcelain tiles nipped by hand to 3 mm x 6 mm and 3 mm square micro-tesserae.

My Body Through Time
