Carmen Rey Through the Gloom

Carmen Rey Through the Gloom Mixed media on linen 46 x 55 cm “The practical side of me was a Chemist and Computer Consultant until I discovered painting in 2014. I understood my unsatisfied creative side that had the desire to rise from inside. My career helped me meet and connect with many different people, and I think that these perceptions appear in my work as a realist painter. Since then, I have studied with the artists Caamaño, Kaoru Hirose, Joshua LaRock, Jacob Dhein, Jafet Blanch, Irene Cuadrado, Ismael Fuentes, Adrià Llarch, Felipe Alonso and Paco Lafarga; and done some courses in MEAM, the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, painting and drawing the live figure. My work mainly focuses on figurative and portraiture, although I enjoy creating cityscapes, landscapes, graphite drawings, and Japanese technique paintings as well. I do not approach every work with the same technique, which is always evolving. For certain paintings, there is a planned route towards an expected result, mostly in oil paintings. However, more recently, I let the work itself guide me through an intuitive mixed media layering technique, then the final painting is something more personal, and I believe that more interesting for the observer as well. I have made portrait commissions and have exhibited in national and international exhibitions and competitions.” Spanish artist, Carmen Rey holds a Bachelor of Chemical Sciences from the University of Barcelona and diplomas from national and international art workshops with some of the best painters nowadays.

Nature on Display Acrylics on canvas 80 x 100 cm

Nature and love for all living creatures are the sources of inspiration for Anne Gry Andersen. In her signature works, she employs symbols and bold colors with each canvas telling its own unique story. Andersen’s practice originates in happiness, the joy coming from the small things in life. Her works are often about emotions while other times a narrative lies within. The last few years, Andersen’s work has revolved around the exploitation of nature by humans.

Born of gestures quiet or fierce, George Andrews’ artworks embody isolated experiences; moments where the viewer and the maker come together at an object, and the object falls away. Andrews exploits the inherent qualities of materials to enhance dynamic markmaking. His approach to art is informed by the idea of expressing consciousness in each stroke, fold or tear, and a questioning of our perception of the world around us.

Moving Slow Digital painting on metal 30 x 46 i

“My work currently and for the past few years tries to capture special moments when time is slowed down as I look at people. Reality slowly seeps away as I look at the subject and project it in a state of stillness. I try to carefully craft paintings that have arresting emotions and show beauty, simplicity, elegance, eccentricity, and naughtiness in them. My works are occasionally mixed media; switching from traditional oil painting to digital and vice versa. It gives me the freedom to expand and contract to the painting at hand. While I do jump around in terms of materials, my methodology remains consistent.”

I do it with the intensity of strong colors so that I can arrive immediately. Colors and sinuous shapes are dictated by a superior intelligence. Love for art, healing with art. “The first thing that caught my attention to the fabric I’ve chosen in this series was its transparency and then its texture. I didn’t like the brightness, but when the artwork is illuminated, this feeling disappeared. I made the first shape but nothing happened. Then I dyed my 3 basic colors and nothing happened either. I spent several months watching these pieces of fabric. Suddenly, when I sewed the ripped threads the form appeared. I made several. They have a life. They are mind drivers. They have movement...”

“Each painting is a journey for me. A journey into my inner self. It’s an emotional and absorbing process that talks about my spiritual and metaphysical concepts of who we really are, where we came from and why we chose to come and live in this dual density. Colours are very important in this journey as well. I usually work in many thin layers of paint on top of each other. Each new layer gives me inspiration for the following one. Sometimes I sketch out my compositions; sometimes they are just intuitive sensations.”

“Capturing light, emotion and movement on the canvas, I am a realist artist specializing in figurative, equine and wildlife subjects. Working primarily in oil, charcoal and sometimes gold leaf, my pieces will convey a strong narrative, capturing a fleeting emotion or the energy of movement in my subject. Often it is the eyes that draw me in which are truly the window to the soul. “From my 4th solo exhibition titled PORTRAIT OF KANGAROO. This is an up-close and personal series of large drawings capturing the individual characteristics of Australian kangaroos. I like to work on a large scale as this offers the capacity of full-arm/body movement. I love the concept of a line in motion. Each line/mark always has a begging point and an endpoint. Some end with a solid hard black aggressive brick wall while others wisp away into infinity like the transient flick of a whisker. I also love the sterility of large clean white space against the chaos of fast black drawing. My materials of use are Conti’, charcoal and graphite on synthetic board.”

My style is realistic, but I like to avoid photorealism. Despite the images’ realism, they maintain an air of fantasy. The paintings are immersed in a sometimes surreal aura that highlights the ‘incredible’. This series is about reconciling harsh reality, empathy and pictorial frankness that makes us understand how exposing the inconsistencies is the first step of a journey of hope that in the future a new humanism will succeed to re-establish the human being starting from the destruction of the false certainties of the present.”

“The COVID-19 crisis reminds us that we are all connected. If something affects one person, it would affect others as well. The borders we created to divide our lands, our countries have no value when it comes to stopping the evasion of this virus. This pandemic is a problem now, endangers our lives and terrorizes our spirits but only for a short period of time. But we know we will find the solution to this problem. When it’s all over, we will carry on. What about the people that are being suppressed and terrorized their whole lives with no hope of finding the light at the end of the tunnel?”

Ant Pearce’s practice focuses on the concept that ‘man is condemned to exist imprisoned’. He explores the fragility of life, drawing on human psychology. Through a web of cross-references between colour, medium and form, the viewer is positioned before the work in discourse between order and chaos. Each work brings into visibility the sense of imprisonment and anxiety, which underlie human existence, and the instinctive desire to return to an inanimate state.

“My collages are a juxtaposition of elements, images, and objects incoherent to each other, thereby exercising a de-contextualizing form of violence on language and image alike. They contain a kind of strangeness, a disturbing element disquieting the spectator/reader who is confronted with a series of elements taken from one’s everyday life which, being put one next to each other, provoke, suddenly, an incoherent situation, a source of obscurity and vagueness.”

Adapt your tools and fight for truth while mining what yearns to be seen. The messages you decipher can shock, amuse, haunt you. Aspire to see what is in between, overseen, not spoken about. There is no goal worth finding and giving up. So never stop changing.”

“My practice consists of fine pencil sketches, followed by small watercolours and they then lead onto actual acrylic paintings. Having performed this ritual time and time again I’m more than ready to have fun with the painting basically from the imprint of all that has gone before. Colour and form just happen and slowly life starts to emerge from a blank canvas and eventually a finished product sits before me. The vision of mind is now a reality and no longer a dream.”

Aside from focusing on Kinetic art, Lin is engaged in cross-discipline cooperation stage design and public art. The work is a reflection of one’s identity within the city. Entering a space by objects, his installations remind the audience of those corners of buildings that have been taken for granted. Before 2010, Lin took discarded metal and conducted a type of archaeological excavation. Since then he remolds concrete, bricks and relics, as well as other mechanisms and objects in an attempt to create a bizarre atmosphere; a civilization that has long been in the making which has been murmuring and operating quietly.

Darren Hall Moon Acrylic and brush work on foamboard 120 x 110 x 1 cm “Art will always be a therapy. My whole life art has been a wonderful medicine. Since 2012 I have used art as a way of conquering many medical issues following an RTA. In late 2018 I was told I could no longer work in a normal work environment due to a brain injury. It was then that art became my full-time profession. I have a very loose often naive style using brushes and palette knives. I also like to paint on different materials to give my brain and me a challenge. Darren Hall is a British artist, primarily self-taught with a unique practice that encompasses a wide range of rural and urban landscapes.
