ALBY Waiting For Raven Oil on canvas 48 x 36 in. “New communities, and the study of enduring visual principles have given me a constant source of dynamic material to explore. Through years of uprooting and transplanting, I have witnessed many extraordinary ecosystems, often seriously challenged by our uncontrolled growth and development. In response, I have evermore turned my visual expression to social commentary, not only to inspire the soul but also, if possible, to awaken environmental and social consciousness.

Time is of the essence for us to collect ourselves and restore what we can of our beautiful planet.”

This behavior, which has never left me, is what urges me to choose dolls as my medium. My dolls are a means for me to express my feelings indirectly, where they are placed in situations and environments based on ones I would like to explore or live through vicariously, as manifestations of my visions.”

Watching my childhood sand castles fall to the continued impertinent rolling in of waves and tide captivated me. I believe that those people who do not go out in the ocean and witness its power and beauty may not understand what happens with the rushing waterborne on a storm. A Crack In Time, 2020 Oil, acrylic and heavy gel on canvas 80 x 100 cm
German Bustamante is a Chilean self-taught abstract artist. He was raised and educated in the UK. His penchant for drawing and painting started at the age of 10 when he was utterly fascinated with ancient oak trees, tree barks and wood, a subject which is still present in some of his paintings. Abstraction has allowed him to express his own spiritual vision of life represented by symbolic imagery that deals with ethereal planes, astral projection, primeval feelings, mental and emotional journeys and other intangible human issues.

“I took daydreaming lightly until I became a junior in high school. That’s when I started transforming it into an art form. Tiny scribbles in the margins of notebooks became crude and surrealistic, playing a far more significant role when I chose fine art for a major in college. Although I learned a great deal socially during this time, I gained most of my creative knowledge indirectly and outside of any structured learning environment. Today, these skills, along with numerous years of experience in the film and television industries, have given me new ways to expand on imagery in a unique and technically pivotal way.”

“My abstract works are explorations of stories and the interconnection of all things. This is expressed through the interplay between enigmatic white shapes on canvas, within bold color fields. I wanted to create artworks that are fresh, sophisticated, yet elegant and sparse in their design, so there is space for breath and interpretation. These works add something zen-like, but bold and bright, to an otherwise often complicated world. Poems are written for each of the artworks, offering a perspective on the story unfolding. These are written after the work is complete, and strangely all come out as love poems.”

Painting becomes a way of communicating loneliness, anxieties and memories to beyond language. A way of conveying emotions on a white canvas. Later the forms have softened allowing me to express a further personal perception of the world. My specialty is watercolor and new dimensional Chinese ink painting. My styles are mainly modern semi-realistic. Personally, I love heavier tones, strong color and high contrast, and more sense of spacing. Some of my paintings reflect a fusion of Oriental and Western styles.”

Travelling Show Triptych
“Art began for me at infants’ school when I showed a picture of a ship at sea - not like a child’s innocent drawing - but one in perspective that greatly impressed my teachers; this was due to the gentle guiding I had received at the time from my father who was trained in Engineering building and who had led me into structural constructions playfully describing lines from the vanishing-point etc. I then went on later to exhibit my paintings and drawings all the way through my education with the help of my English teacher who also encouraged my writing. I was obsessed with these two subjects when I came across Mc Escher and Bridgett Riley at college which led me into geometry and the mystery of mathematics when used in imagery...”
My tutors though in those days were obsessed with copying, which is a good thing to be able to do of course - but I was already advanced in my ability through years of studying human and animal anatomy and was impatient to develop my own work which by then was well past its early beginnings and which had been already accepted for a show of my own; so I made the decision to leave and pursue my own individual subjects without wasting any more time when I already knew what I wanted to do. This was a risky business, but I followed my instincts and managed to accrue several more exhibitions along the way... I was not well known of course enough to make much money in order to survive - and so I did a lot of catering work, window cleaning and building work too - which I also enjoyed and kept me grounded... For the last twenty-five years, I have been living in a sort of lockdown before it was actually enforced, happily creating my pictures diligently and only going out to see my neighbour, the odd girlfriend, and to shop for food, which I was happy with as I also had my loyal cat to spoil! Defunct now, bless his heart.

▫︎ 65 ▫︎ Spotlight 20 ▫ David Lee Valley of Ashes Triptych and detail
Personally, I find it is always the vagaries of the ever-changing weather that perfectly represent for me the wide spectrum of human-emotions - especially in the paintings of Turner - not only for their dramatic depictions of portentous storm-clouds and terrifying, turbulent seascapes with shipwrecks and floundering figures in peril but also for the more visionary, misty, dreamlike qualities of the Venetian sunset and the English pastoral scenes. Apart from the love of nature in all of its many variant moods, I think there is also in many of the pieces relating to the extremes of weather a prescient, unconscious fear of possible climate-change and the irreversible effects, good and bad, that might accrue in the unpredictable aftermath - a genuine, exasperated feeling of helplessness and despair at the arrogant abuse, the wastage and destruction of the landscape and finite resources by conglomerates and big business-driven impersonally ever onwards by greed for profit without concern for consequences.

Industrial Revolutions Triptych
All of these thoughts and feelings are fairly common nowadays, about the natural world being continually exploited through commerce upon a finely balanced ecosystem, I can only compare to the overwhelming emotional response I had felt as a boy when reading the Biblical stories of flood and apocalypse, pestilence and plague or when viewing for the first time several great paintings in a book on ‘Weather in Art’ that I had serendipitously discovered in the local library - noting as I turned the pages the wonderful works of Turner in particular; but especially the classic, tragic imagery of ‘The Raft of the Medusa’ by Gericault - (a symbol if ever I saw one of mankind at the mercy of the enraged elements) - all of which have haunted my imagination ever since…
MC Escher was another startling discovery whose work seemed to unlock a part of my brain that I had hardly ever used before: the strictly logical and rational, the precisely mathematical in opposition to my usual free-association and playful doodling, which then ultimately, through experimentation with line, introduced me to a superrealistic world of infinite and fascinating perspectives that draw the viewer down into a world of endless possibilities or that can cause disturbing optical illusions, because as well as tricking the eye into believing in the existence of imaginary three dimensional depths on a two dimensional surface, the almost magical properties inherent in this particular branch of mathematics can sometimes also have the actual physical effect of stimulating the optical-nerve itself causing confusion and indecision in the brain as it attempts endlessly to decide between ambiguous patterns and shapes thereby creating movement in the brain that does not exist in reality.

“I feel I am useless as an artist when I am happy. Pain is what creates my artwork. The painful experiences that people go through as they journey through life in the world around us from childhood to adulthood which in many ways is full of chaos and hardship are what sparks and motivates me to possess my objectives to make purposeful artwork that hopefully generates meaningful and fulfilling empathetic connections to people. As I observe and interpret the world around me combined with creating my artwork, I discover time and time again that true beauty lies within darkness and that sometimes nightmares are the birthplace of some of the best creative ideas for an artist.
