Sarah Capps Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You Acrylic 24 x 24 in. (detail) Sarah Capps is an artist with an extraordinary story. She has synesthesia – a rare condition that affects how one processes sensations. In Sarah’s case, when she hears sound, she simultaneously sees colour, shape, and form. As you’d expect, much of her painting is done with the speaker turned up. To see her abstract and landscape paintings, visit www. scapps.art or Instagram @shepaints.music

Fall Landscape with Two Trees Oil on canvas 30 x 40 x 1.5 in.
“Through Division to Expression” Influenced by post-impressionism with a cubist approach to composition. The goal here is to utilize the whole surface of the support challenging the viewer’s perception of negative space. Essentially divisionist, the figure/composition is woven into the fabric of the plane and space warps into the figure. In the painting process, repetitive almost automatic application of the crosshatched lines allows the subconscious the opportunity to direct the composition, there is a tension between the desire to hide vs. the need to reveal, conflict between subconscious and self-conscious.

“My paintings are about storytelling and beauty. The themes in my work often explore the power of feminine energies and their impact on the world around them by incorporating the female figure in various forms that represent the mythical and contemporary woman in various states of existence. Beauty can hold our gaze, allowing us to see an issue or problem. I believe that two of the most important things about being an artist are being open and being curious.”

“My expressive abstract canvases reflect my love of color. I work freely and intuitively, being drawn to work with certain colours initially and as a painting progresses the palette expands. Pattern and texture also feature in my work with layers of acrylic paint being added and sometimes scraped back to reveal contrasts in shape and form. It is the energy and emotion that colour can convey which interests me.”

“Becoming a collage artist was never a conscious decision on my part, it was simply a natural extension of my photography. New pieces call to me more than I called to them. Looking back it makes more sense to say the art of collage found me in one way or another. I create collage art to retreat from the frustrations of life, to have a creative outlet and to gain a new view of the world. The juxtaposition of different people and places makes us see the world in a way that we have not seen it before. It is this unity of a collage that is perhaps the most inspirational part; in a world clearly divided by race, class and greed, a collage is a place where we all can equally exist.”

“The painting process keeps me focused on the here and now. The nuances of the natural landscape and the landscape’s inherent beauty are what inspire me to paint with oils on canvas. With my oils and brush in hand, I delight in the edges, textures, shapes and colors that hold me captive in a moment’s time, in a specific place, mood and scene within my surrounding locale and its natural elements. Through painting, I seek to capture that one scene and moment that compels us to pause and take it all in. It is my hope that the finished painted canvas can focus the viewer’s attention and move them the same way I was moved in an instance in time by a specific scenery. “

“Lost Soles” brings together a collection of work by international artist Claire Davenhall, exploring the multicultural migration of people to Australia. Claire captures the complex cultural heritage of the many waves of migration to Australia through her sculptural work. As a metaphor for life and its hardships, the sea has an amazing yet daunting expanse and depth. At its core, “Lost Soles” inspires its audience to individually challenge their own lost soul and the story it yet has to tell, commenting on the pressures and constraints placed on the early settlers, the lasting endurance of migrants and refugees travelling across the sea, in their search to reach a land of hope and dreams.

“I am a Danish-born award-winning painter based in London. A favourite theme of mine is female forms, colorful, almost abstracted, oil or acrylic on canvas. My “Women of The World”, or “Out of This World” series are in fact, often goddesses, at times floating in clouds or even in space. Other passion-filled themes are my “Dreamscapes”, “Funky Flowers”, and “My Playful Cosmos” series.”

Desinvolte Bronze, Edition of 3, 7,5 x 5 x 20,5 in.
Jean Jacques Porret’s surreal sculptures transcend the mere human form they represent and instead draw the viewer in with their delicate expressionism, rhythmic movement, and abstract sensuality. The work is never about the figure, but the emotions expressed in the tension of his fluid curves and precarious balance. Though abstract in nature, the recognizable form and innate humanity residing within each piece is impossible to ignore.

“My work is an ironic narrative that enacts my fantasy of being a grandmother. I’m preparing intersectional feminist videos that my granddaughter can use to take down the patriarchy. My work is campy, being blatantly ironic in order to initiate analysis of the clichés associated with women. I am addressing the interminable cycle of the female role. I want my audience to walk away from my work thinking about how women are considered in our culture more critically.”

“I feel colors and bring feelings and thoughts on canvas to make them visible and tangible.” As Roswitha Riedl paints, she sinks into inner worlds, communicating with feelings and the light and shadow sides of life. Layer by layer she paints them on canvas. Her works are sensitive, authentic, emotional.

“During my personal study and research as an artist, my main focus was to find my own formula. That happened when I randomly glued strings on the canvas to “interlineate” my artwork, resulting in a pure implied sense of figure. I also developed Puzzle Art & 4D, a technique that could revolutionize the way of creation in the visual arts! As I have never seen a painting like “Metamorphosis”, I think, I have made my contribution to the art world.”

“Inspirations, the crushing of techniques, colors, including those of Delft and Florence, happen along the debris left beside the slippery slopes of defeat. If you stare at them long enough you understand, that the seemingly unbridgeable and eternally separated is just another aspect of all the interwoven, interdependent energies that keep us alive and doing our thing. Ludwig Wittgenstein admitted that later on in his life, he was not able to understand many of the ideas and arguments he had written years before. Which is a very bold statement for a philosopher guy. I like that. There is nothing more to be added. So just shut up and have a good look.”
