CIS NEWSLETTER JULY 2024

JULY 2024

What strikes me in this edition is the overall feeling of nurturing and seeing things grow.

Our commitment to young people has been in place for some years, and supporting emerging talent is something that we thrive on and, in turn, brings new experiences to our teams. Looking back, I was particularly pleased to see that we have highlighted Trevor and his long and dedicated service at Welcome Trust; I remember that type of ID card myself.

A few words from Neill Catton, CIS Managing

The Industry may have changed, but dedicated and passionate people will always be at the heart of it. So many great things are happening within the company and the communities we work in. I want to applaud those colleagues who are putting themselves out there and contributing. Creating safe communities is part of our Business Plan Vision and a commitment that will contribute to safeguarding our customers and colleagues.

We should also all take pride in our ISO certification for Diversity and Inclusion. Being the first security company globally to achieve this recognition is impressive. This certification indeed confirms that we are an inclusive team that works together and shares common values.

I trust that you will have a great summer, whether at home or away, and that you will have the opportunity to spend some downtime with family and friends. Thank you for continuing to Make it Happen!

YOUTH

OUR FUTURE… We have started to further develop careers for young people with the success of our first youth assessment day in February 2024. We now actively employ nine Security Apprentices who will be enrolled on to the Professional Security Operative qualification.

Following this and seeing the benefits of employing Security Apprentices, another Youth Career Assessment Day was hosted on Wednesday 3rd of July. This was extremely successful securing positions to another 11 individuals allowing them opportunities to start a career in the security industry.

Thank you to the Resourcing Team (Georgina Martin, Mafalda Oliveira and Shelby Martin), Kieron Nunney – Account Director, Sammy Harrington –Account Director, Andrew Gough - One Crown Place Security Manager, David Phee – PWC Security Operations Manager, Peter McMichael – PWC Deputy Security Operations Manager and Jack Wiseman – SET Apprentice for your attendance throughout the day and allowing these young individuals an opportunity to develop their careers.

“Overall I thought the event went really well. From my perspective it was good to have a room full of young candidates. As this is not the stereotype of applicants for security roles, so to have some young people bringing new ideas and a freshness was welcomed. And that is exactly why I think the youth apprentice scheme is worthwhile. Hopefully by setting them up on the apprenticeship scheme we are developing the security managers of the future.”

David Phee, Security Operations Manager PWC Embankment stated,

YOUTH

stated.

“The Youth Apprentice Assessment Day was the first assessment day I have attended, and it exceeded all my expectations. A great group of young people had been brought together by the recruitment team looking for their opportunity to start a new career. All of these people performed well and made the task of selecting them difficult.

I have been working with the CIS recruitment team trying to bring in the right young apprentice. I’ve wanted to bring in a young apprentice to the One Crown Place team as it means we’re starting with a blank canvas and we’re giving someone an opportunity. Experience and skills can always be taught, but it’s important someone has the right positive attitude and wants to learn. If they have this, they can learn anything. I believe in giving someone an opportunity and helping them to better themselves and progress.”

Harshaan

Mattoo

Beths Grammar School

Year 12

I am a Year 12 student at Beth’s Grammar School, studying A-level Psychology, Sociology and Computer Science + EPQ. I know that university isn’t for me, and I am extremely passionate about doing an apprenticeship instead as I like the valuable hands-on experience.

When CIS Security came to my school’s apprenticeship fair, my interest was immediately sparked. I was made aware of all the different apprenticeships that CIS offer and was amazed at all the different aspects of the company – particularly the Sales & Marketing department. As a creative individual I knew that I wanted to learn more about this and that I would find it exciting.

On the first day I immediately felt welcomed by everyone. All the staff were extremely hospitable and friendly towards me, and I

am very grateful I had the chance to work with them. Right from the first day I had the opportunity to sit in a staff meeting, allowing me to get an insight into the dayto-day work that happens within the department as well as meet the team. Being invited to a team breakfast with everyone further reinforced how welcoming and inviting all the staff were.

Throughout the week on the marketing side, I was taught how to use Canva to create graphics and social media posts, learnt more about SEO and was able to give feedback and input on the new CIS website being developed.

On the sales side, I learnt about bids and tenders and was able to conduct research into several different companies which will assist the team when trying to win contracts.

The site visit at The Leadenhall Building was a fantastic opportunity to see the reality of everybody’s hard work and efforts. I received a tour from the Head of Security, Joe Easterbrook who showed us around the breathtaking Leadenhall Building

skyscraper and I was in awe at all the different aspects and security measures within the building.

It was amazing to see London from such a high view (floor 42) on such a lovely day via one of the fastest lifts in Europe and it has definitely been one of the highlights of my week.

Overall, my work experience at CIS has been extremely meaningful and beneficial. The fact that I was able to do tasks that contribute to the company on a larger scale gave me a huge sense of purpose and value. The skills I have gained from this experience will be applicable in many different areas of life, helping me to become a more disciplined and proficient person in the world of work.

My week here has piqued my interest in Sales & Marketing, and it is something I will be doing more research on as a potential career path. I am thankful for the effort CIS has put into accommodating me and I am very appreciative for the opportunity I had.

CIS SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL BUSINESS CRIME CENTRE

CIS had the pleasure of supporting the National Business Crime Centre, Safe Spaces Scheme. We want to thank Ray Marskell, Director of Risk and Intelligence at CIS for his unwavering dedication to collaborate with various initiatives in our security industry. Collaboration is key to make our city a safer place.

TAKING ACTION AGAINST LOCAL CRIME AT REGENT’S PLACE

Regent’s Place Takes Action Against Local Crime

The police and security industry continue to encourage the deployment of SelectaDNA Tagging Sprays. CIS at Regent’s Place has now been trained in their use, and they are carried as part of the standard officer equipment.

Head of Security John Reynolds said,

“These kits can be used by our security team to mark potential offenders to deter and prevent attacks and criminal behaviour. Our robust security regime already ensures that our campus has low crime levels. However, the surrounding areas, particularly arterial roads, have seen a number of cycleenabled mobile phone thefts.”

The message is clear to criminals - do not commit offences on or near Regent’s Place. The SelectaDNA Tagging & Defence Sprays are compact offender marking sprays. The solution is easily identifiable under UV light and irrefutably links criminals with crimes using unique synthetic DNA. The spray is not harmful, is water-based, and has unique DNA coding.

We want to deter offending and help catch those who commit serious crimes. The tagging sprays will enhance our service to our customers, occupiers, residents, and visitors. We work closely with the Metropolitan Police and our security teams across Regent’s Place, and this should reassure occupants, residents, and visitors that we continue to do all we reasonably can to keep people safe.

ARMED FORCES DAY - 13 BRIDGES CHALLENGE

CIS Security is proud to support the Armed Forces community.

This year we participated in the 13 Bridges Challenge in aid of SSAFA the Armed Forces charity.

The CIS Wanderers set off at 11:30, taking in the wonders of London while walking over each bridge in turn, from Tower Bridge to Battersea Bridge. The day was a complete success, with lots of money raised for this fantastic charity.

What a difference a golf day makes!

Following what seems like never-ending rainy days, the sun shone for this year’s Managing Agents Cup. CIS Security Ltd hosted the event at Hever Castle’s stunning golf course in Kent. Everyone in attendance paid to play and, combined with the generous donations from our sponsors, raised funds in support of CIS’s charity partner -London’s Air Ambulance Charity

The event was a fantastic opportunity for London’s esteemed Managing Agent organisations to network, collaborate, and have some friendly competition while raising money for a great cause.

Neill Catton, CIS Managing Director said,

“What a way to celebrate World FM Day! CIS sees this event as an opportunity not only to have fun but to give back to our communities, celebrate people and our colleagues from the wider FM industry”.

We are very grateful to our sponsors; this event would not have been possible without their contribution. A huge thank you to everyone involved.

Due to its success, the event will be held annually, encouraging beginners and more experienced players to participate in a truly memorable day. If you want to be included in next year’s event, please get in touch with Paul.Brady@CIS-Security.co.uk.

FIGEN MURRAY 200-MILE (321KM WALK FROM MANCHESTER TO DOWNING STREET

CIS were immensely proud to assist The City Security Council in the final leg of Figen Murray OBE, her family, and Nick Aldworth from Manchester to Downing Street walk. It had been a colossal effort from all those involved and to see the spirits and energy was inspirational.

The final leg from Marble Arch to Downing Street saw around 200 supporters brave the rain to watch Figen Murray and Nick Aldworth cross the finish line. The outlook is very positive for Protect Duty to be sanctioned and become legislation. This will ensure better security and standards for public safety. A big thank you to Adrian Moore for arranging the last leg and to those who were instrumental in the background who made things happen.

A special thank you to, Lorraine Mansfield, Scott Gough, David Ward, Stephen Shackell and Jon Felix

WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CITY SECURITY COUNCIL

On 13th May 2024, Ray Marskell, Director of Risk and Intelligence, presented to around 200 executive-level law enforcement officers from the states of New Jersey and New York. The audience also included other international attendees.

This was part of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) professional development leadership programme. Ray was asked to present the benefits of international policing working closer with the private security industry.

Ray Marskell, Director of Risk and Intelligence, stated.

“I was honoured to present to a delegation of senior law enforcement and safety professionals from across the USA and other countries. It’s great to see law enforcement now looking to explore opportunities to work closer with private security across the states and wider. Regulations and culture can, at times, hinder closer working, but with the right leadership and determination, the benefits to all are there to see.”

In May, CIS celebrated Mental Health Awareness Week!

At CIS, we proudly support mental health and promote a strong, common understanding of its importance. Our continued commitment has led us to train over 200 Mental Health First Aiders and obtain many wellbeing apps and support programs, including Help Me Angela, the Employee Assistance Programme, Mental Health & Wellbeing Webinars, and dedicated Wellbeing Champions.

It is important for everyone to feel that their workplace is a safe space to talk, connect, share, and aspire.

CIS will continue to raise awareness and support mental health to help reduce stigma and ultimately contribute to a healthier, more informed environment.

Regent’s Place held its latest Security Managers Forum. CIS worked with our security colleagues from Wilson James, META and DENTSU as well as Elexon.

Special thanks to the team from British Land, as well as the Metropolitan Police. Pc Michael O’Grady, Pc Satoshi Kaneyasu and PCSO Tom Vincent gave a great overview of crime and ASB including the issue of homelessness.

We are particularly appreciative of our guest speakers from ‘Employers Initiative’ on Domestic Abuse, Susan Bright and Sally Benatar who held all our attention on the issue of domestic abuse. A moving and brave story from Sally. We are stronger together. Working in partnership is key to delivering a robust security regime.

John Reynolds Head of Security at Regent’s Place said,

“Thank you to all of my colleagues, customer and partners on the campus who again supported this forum. Partnership is key in intelligence sharing, incident management and post incident review. The forum demonstrates how we all make Regent’s Place safer for everyone.”

On 23rd May 2024, The CIS team at Regent’s Place were engaging with all our occupiers, clients and visitors across the campus providing reassurance and crime prevention advice. We know incidents and crime levels are low on the campus, but everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings as they leave Regent’s Place on their way to our local transport hubs and stations or visiting local shops, bars and restaurants. Situational awareness and being alert are key to avoid becoming victims of crime.

We have deployed additional security personnel on high visibility patrols. It was great to see the team in action, even if the weather proved a challenge.

CIS and our security partners on campus, Wilson James, held a police and security drop in at the Santander European HQ on the plaza. Our neighbourhood policing team and security teams were able to give further crime prevention advice, discuss local issues, show offences of mobile phone theft being committed in London and advise how to stay safe. Free merchandise and leaflets were available to all, the panic alarms provided were certainly popular.

Our Loading Bay team have also been training in the use of under vehicle search mirrors across the week.

John, Head of Security at Regent’s Place, stated.

“I am proud to lead a team who take security seriously. We have all worked hard over the last 18 months building a strong collaborative partnership with our local neighbourhood policing teams, specialist officers from other departments within The Metropolitan Police and our partner security teams across the campus from Wilson James Security. We all come together as one to ensure the very safest environment possible for our clients, occupiers and visitors. It is going to be a busy summer with some great events planned.”

A huge thank you to everyone involved!

On 24th May 2024, The Gilbert hosted a Safety Skills Seminar presented by subject expert to the UK Government and CIS Security Limited Behavioural Detection Specialist Simon Riley BA (Hons).

John Salthouse, Security Manager at The Gilbert stated.

“The Safety Skills Seminar highlighted Behavioural Detection Skills and acting on gut instinct, this is a critical aspect of safety and security in today’s world with everyone being a potential target to criminals. This seminar was perfect for security personnel, business owners, educators, and community members who want to sharpen their ability to identify and respond to potential threats through behaviour analysis.

During the seminar, we were shown the science behind behavioural detection and recognising unusual behaviours and body language from analysis of past incidents where behavioural detection was key.

The Seminar included lessons learned and best practices for future prevention by enhancing our observational skills in various environments. The Seminar also demonstrated techniques to stay alert and responsive in dynamic situations.

With our current climate, criminals are becoming more tactful in ensuring that their operations are successful. This starts with them finding easy pickings by tailing people lacking in situational/ observational awareness.

All it takes is a well-aimed look around, a challenge or pointing them out to bring down their walls. Make them question their target and put doubt into their plans.

Don’t fall victim to avoidable situations, always pay attention to your surroundings.”

CIS was proud to participate in the 80th Anniversary Event held at Paternoster Square Estate in collaboration with the Royal British Legion, London Stock Exchange, and The Household Cavalry Regiment for D-Day.

We would like to thank the team at Paternoster Square Estate for the fantastic day as we honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom and peace.

“Mental health awareness is important to reduce stigma. As trainers, we know that not everyone can become a mental health first aider, as everyone has been on their own journey. However, having a 100% rate of MHFA is truly a testament to everyone’s openness to supporting their colleagues at One Crown Place. Well done, team; I am very proud.”

Congratulations to all of the team involved in this achievement. We look forward to even more outstanding success.

STOP BEING BUSY, EMBRACING A HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT APPROACH

IN THE SECURITY INDUSTRY

In today’s rapidly evolving climate, security operations face an array of challenges that demand a dynamic and comprehensive management approach. Traditional security management often focuses on addressing immediate threats and vulnerabilities, your day to day needs, Timegate, deployment, HR, and client requests. However, this narrow perspective may overlook wider trends and issues that could have serious consequences. Therefore, as operational managers, we need to adopt a holistic management approach that considers the bigger picture. One thing that the senior risk and Intel team are noticing is a lack of the wider risk (and threat) awareness from the operational and account management.

Consider the following questions towards your operational responsibilities.

Are you considering the wider security aspects and anticipating risks as opposed to always reacting?

Try to take some time to look beyond individual incidents and your day to day chafe. There are many aspects, all interconnected, such as technology, human behaviour, regulatory compliance, social and political dynamics, emerging threats, and client demands.

In simpler terms, we are impacted by the localised ASB, crime, demonstrations, and internal aspects that challenge us every day. When you take time to consider a broader view, operations can better anticipate risks, develop proactive strategies, and enhance overall resilience. Otherwise managing on a reactionary basis could cause more issues than solutions.

Are you confidently utilising the resources available to you?

We can utilise the available resources, blending our use of technology and human experience and resources on the ground. Task our officers and teams to also look beyond the immediate and obvious.

We all know the usual behaviours and patterns, so a level of prediction on certain aspects you can do with ease and with relative accuracy. If these are a known consideration, do not dwell on these, look towards the more unusual and elements that may need more resource or attention. This approach will help to more effectively identify potential threats that may otherwise be missed because we are looking at the immediate issues all the time.

What is your own holistic approach to delivering security?

Each contract and location will have different specifics, you will know these and manage them appropriately. For example, rather than just accepting known weak points, or gaps in security or process, ensure these are proactively reported, with suggestions and recommendations at every opportunity to the client.

Demonstrate the vulnerability, the risk appetite and why this is an issue and guide towards a solution. Not always easy I know, but very necessary no matter how repetitive. Pen Tests outline this perfectly, where we have failures, we need to clearly show rectifications, suggestions and corrective actions, no matter how difficult or the levels of reluctance. Once this has been established or it is accepted, then we can pay far less attention to it as we know it is a failure or accepted issue, we then only respond as required and we can focus our energies elsewhere. We can lead clients to the coffee machine, but cannot make them drink!!

Are you up to date or at least aware of compliance and legislation changes?

As operations management you NEED to have a rounded approach towards compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards. “I do not know”, “I was not told” will not stand up under review or scrutiny. You may not know the intricate details but you need to at least understand the outlines of regulations and legislation. The recent Protection of Premises Bill (Martyns Law) sums this up perfectly.

We are striving to embed security best practices into our processes through innovation, review, and investment in expertise, however, we know there are locations that need more support, but we would expect to see more questions coming in from the operations so we can support them.

The investment in SME’s is so you can reach out, and as part of your holistic security approach, ask away, there are no silly questions, legislation can be vague, and confusing. While you’re busy running your contracts, we are reviewing these so we can answer or at least update you as to what’s important.

Are you maximising the wider Operational management network, both within CIS and any external sources available to you?

Something that is done exceptionally well by some and not so much by others. We have within CIS one the (if not the most) exceptional resource in SME’s and operational expertise in the industry. By exchanging intelligence, sharing best practices, and collaborating on joint initiatives, we can enhance our collective resilience and stay ahead of emerging threats.

There is some fantastic work being carried out in this, but this is still in isolated pockets and the willingness to support further afield is there, but if you don’t ask, we can’t support. So we ask that you, feed into the intelligence hub, join forums, speak to your neighbouring security teams and businesses, link in with the police contacts, use available web resources like NPSA (CPNI) etc. This can save you a lot of time and effort.

So to conclude, consider these questions, from an operational point of view, these are observations and NOT CRITICISMS. STOP BEING BUSY is not saying we are not doing a good job, we are, our performance overall clearly demonstrates this and its testament to the work you all are doing in the operations and contract teams.

CAN WE MAKE THE BOAT GO FASTER? Yes, we must embrace a holistic management approach that considers the bigger picture and addresses the complex nature of modern security challenges. As site based management, by considering the questions herein, take a breath, STOP BEING BUSY and look further than the immediate contract perimeter, there is a reason we are as successful as we are, it’s what you are doing, and doing it well so keep it up, thank you.

CIS LITTER

PICKING AT GABRIEL’S WHARF, LONDON

The majority of litter found in the River Thames is made of plastic, which can harm wildlife and the surrounding environment.

To support the efforts to reduce litter found near the river, Francois Reynders, Key Account Director, Jordy Mukudi, ESG Manager, and John Sephton, Account Manager joined MidCity colleagues and Recorra to litter pick at Gabriel’s Wharf, London.

Although it rained, spirits remained high as the team worked to create a safer and more pleasant environment, whilst raising awareness of the amount of litter we produce.

On the 5th June, CIS united to celebrate our beautiful planet and take action to protect it. Every small step counts, from reducing waste to conserving water and planting trees. We continue to commit to sustainable living and ensure a healthy environment for future generations.

At CIS, we are proud of our award-winning ESG strategy and dedicated to advancing the goals of Generation Restoration. Through many volunteering initiatives, we are actively working to restore natural habitats and promote sustainable practices.

07. HEALTH AND SAFETY

£1.2M FINE AFTER WORKER

HIT BY WAGON

A metals recycling company has been fined £1.2m after a worker was injured after being struck by a wagon at a processing site. How did this happen and what reasonably practicable control measures would have prevented it?

Blindsided

An colleagues of CF Booth Ltd (B) was walking across the site yard in Rotherham when he was struck by a moving 32-tonne skip wagon in August 2023. The man sustained a fractured skull and fractured his collar bone in two places but has since made a full recovery.

Poor practices

The worker was not wearing his hi-vis jacket and did not see the wagon approaching. The wagon driver did not see the employee prior to the collision due to concentrating on manoeuvring the vehicle around some low-level skips which had been placed on the corner near where the employee was crossing the yard. The HSE found that the site was not organised in such a way that pedestrians and vehicles could circulate in a safe manner. A suitable and sufficient workplace transport risk assessment was not in place for the segregation of vehicles and pedestrians.

Paying the price

B pleaded guilty to breachings.2 Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. It was fined £1.2 million and ordered to pay costs of £5,694.85. time-consuming or onerous task.

Steps for prevention

In this case poor placement of low-level skips on a corner obscured the driver’s view and meant that a pedestrian crossing-point became compromised. Tip. Your traffic management plan should identify whether there is potential for pedestrians and mov-ing vehicles to collide. If this is the case cost- effective controls to reduce the likeli-hood of an incident occurring could include:

f Installation of retractable barriers to prevent pedestrian entry whilst vehicles are operating

f Installation of mirrors at critical points to increase visibility for both those on foot and drivers

f Better placement of the skips. Tip. Once suitable areas are identified, mark the ground to establish a consistent reference point for their placement

f Adding hatching to areas where lorries should not enter

f Installation of suitable barriers bolted into the ground to create a segregated and safe walkway.

Behavioural element

A contributing factor to this incident was that the employee was walking in a hazard-ous area and not wearing suitable high visibility clothing. Tip. Use our Safe and Un-safe Acts Form to regularly log employee behaviour.

If unsafe acts are spotted, docu-ment safety discussions in your workplace and get everyone involved. Log and track if there are repeat issues and use this information to improve safety and reduce the chances of accidents occurring (see The next step).see documents attached.

The employee was struck due to lack of planning and poor visibility. Improve the safety of external areas by implementing a suitable traffic plan, train it to all colleagues and ensure they stick to the proven safe practices, e.g. wearing hi-vis jackets. Pro-vide physical controls such as well-positioned mirrors, hatched areas and barriers to define walkways.

RAY MARSKELL & IZZY

“I recently walked up every step of the Watford FC stadium with my daughter Izzy, who is 10 years old.

This charity initiative was in support of various charities for the Watford FC community sports and education trust. The steps equate to walking up the Empire State Building. Following the event Izzy was given a guided tour of both the home and away dressings rooms by club captain Daniel Bachmann.

The burn kicked in for me very early, but Izzy kept going to show real determination to do her bit for the chosen charities.”

Ray Marskell - Director of Risk and Intelligence

A huge well done to you both!

PRAVEEN KAMMARI

TEAM WORK, MAKES THE DREAM WORK

Praveen Kammari, Security Supervisor at 40 Leadenhall London is always at hand to help his colleagues.

In May One of the New Starters on his first shift had a particularly challenging day shift with power shutdowns making patrols fairly difficult.

The new starter was very demoralised and disillusioned as to nature of the job on site and looked and felt low when we arrived for our night shift. Praveen noticed this and started a motivational pep talk with the starter informing him that his day was not the usual way we function and that he was just unlucky with the power shutdown during the day, which added to a difficult day physically with regards to patrols and getting to locations.

He informed that a lot has changed and progressed onsite in just a few months for the security team with better structure and systems that are always progressing and for the new starter to keep his moral up as he has a good team and they will assist him in his learning and development and that a normal day functions positively.

I notice during the following night shifts that this pep talk by Praveen did have a positive impact on the security officer who was now upbeat and ready for any challenge.

I would also like to add that Praveen is a very positive character and he has always lead by example and motivates the team and demonstrated the right way to do things.

PRAJWAL SHRESTHA

CHARITY WORK IN NEPAL

Prajwal Shrestha, Senior Security Officer, at a prestige business in Sussex, volunteered for charity in Nepal, assisting a team of local medical experts in rural areas in Nepal.

Prajwal stated,

“I went to Nepal, Khotang to help as a Health Camp Volunteer. Khotang District is one of 14 districts of Koshi Province of eastern Nepal.

Khotang Sewa Samaj UK - Bridging Borders for Health 2024 was the banner I travelled under for 12 days in Khotang, Nepal as a Health Camp Volunteer. Khotang is a district in the eastern part of the country with Diktel as its district headquarters. The region is full of hills where you are either driving up or down a slopes.

114 doctors, dentists and other medical personnel were integral in making this health camp a success. In total 6,638 patients received care and treatment with 840 of them having their teeth checked or extracted.

I now have some great memories, experiences and new friends. In conclusion, my journey into Khotang as a first time volunteer for the health camp was very informative and now I have an understanding of the life there.

I am very grateful for the opportunity and the work I got to do with such amazing people. My time in Khotang is embedded into my core memory which I will look back on fondly over the years.”

Prajwal with his Grandmother
