Why design the creative societies of the future? At the core of this lies the condition of creativity. Although neurosciences have deciphered some of the source code of creativity, an enigmatic element remains in the process of creation and the conceiving of true innovation. Some of this enigma could well have to do with our roles as wanderers between worlds – a role often attached throughout history to healers, magicians as well as artists of all kinds. Isaac Newton, who was a founding figure of rational science and an active alchemist at the same time, could be our patron if we look at our multi-role-personas living in different worlds. We can
Playing around with coining neologisms – as we did with the terms Creative Semantic Web, Design Commons and Cloud Creativity for the purpose of the Creative Industries Styria Convention 2010 and for this publication – can be dangerous business. But what may appear as simple semantic tricks will turn out to be pointing towards deeper realizations: There will be a massive mind-shift required from all of us in the creative industries, if we want to maintain our positions as creative and social innovators. But if we take the challenge, we can encounter tremendous possibilities in playing an active role in designing the future not only of the Web, but of the entire sphere of human creative development. Every generation believes that it is living through an epoch of massive change, so caution is recommended. None of us knows what the future of the Web will be, we can only work on scenarios and try to formulate our visions. But it looks like a real paradigm change that is awaiting us – the face and functioning of the Web will never be the same again, old copyright regimes may falter and give way to
oscillate between our roles as – let‘s say – writers of science-fiction or designers, activists and bloggers, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, governmental advisors and clan leaders in World of Warcraft or any other world we may access. This publication is both part and symbol of the changes under way: Many great minds have freely contributed and shared their thoughts for this publication, many fine photographers have made their images available on Flickr under a Creative Commons license, thus allowing us to use them here. And, looking at the ideas and concepts discussed here, we surely stand – as always – on the shoulders of many others. We draw from the cloud and strive to be giving at least something back to it, when we hand this book freely out to those interested and make it available online under a Creative Commons license. Hoping it to proof to be inspiring and encouraging to the creative communities to actively shape the future of the web together. RELATED LINKS andreas-hirsch.net

September 2008, www.webfoundation.org/about/community/transcript-of-tim-berners-lee-video) The point about the Web is it’s a platform. It should be, for the next generation, for the people who are students now, for people who are children now, they should find that the Web is a canvas that they can draw wonderful things on. If somebody asks me, “OK, so what’s going to be the result in 10 years? What do you imagine is going to be the result in 10 years if this all works out?” And the answer is, well, my imagination ought not to be a gauging factor. If we in the end of 10 years produced everything I can imagine, we have failed. The idea is to produce everything other people can imagine.
Andreas Hirsch
Design Commons is bringing the ideas and principles of open source software and the historic topos of the Commons to the world of design, architecture, fashion and other areas of the creative industries. Design Commons takes off from the realization that new solutions for handling intellectual property rights have become necessary, since the old copyright regimes often block both creative work and the emergence of a new culture of sharing. In the form of initiatives like Creative Commons such new solutions have already arrived and the experiences made with them in areas like music, writ-ing or photography can be profited from in other areas of creativity. However, the creation of a Design Commons requires a major mind-shift from many in the creative industries. Only with the understanding that in a culture of sharing the advantages for each creative induvidual clearly outweigh what is required to let go, this transition can actually happen. New business models for this will be needed and help in the process of change.

Free/Open Source Software and Wikipedia are established open projects which allow open access, availability and editing of their products (software as well as text). These digital commons represent resources continuously expanded by a community; they are available for individual use, and additionally accomplish the aim of earning income. Open aspects of production and organization increasingly emerge in various areas, such as music, hardware, education and government. Designers of products, fashion and architecture break new ground with open design and design commons. What are they actually doing and why? Which possibilities exist – licenses, business models, tools? Does it make sense? Would I consider doing it similar to that?

Cloud Creativity Andreas Hirsch
Cloud Creativity is based on the assumption that together we can be more creative than on our own and that we need not fear losing our creative identity in the process. The worldwide network of the internet has become something like a global brain that we all contribute to each and every day, if we post something or take part in online collaboration. We draw from the knowledge and the wisdom of the cloud and we give something back to it, using tools and platforms that allow for online collaboration in many different forms. Being part of the cloud changes the creative process and makes clear that the vision of the lonely creative is a thing of the past. In some cases it may be hard to let this vision go, but the advent of a culture of creative collaboration will shape the work environment for the creative industries.

On the other hand, though, the idea of a form of knowledge made by the spontaneous interactions of millions of individuals risks to mistake popularity for objectivity. Furthermore, the fact that conflictual collaboration and „notworking“ are primary means whereby innovation is created tends to be underestimated.
