Most people know this intense and chilling music from the Alfred Hitchcock thriller “Psycho!” What many don’t know is that the composer was a bona fide 20th-century classical composer! At the same time as you are listening to contemporary classical music, you are also listening to some of the best film music you have ever heard!

SERENADE FOR STRINGS - Mvt # 1 Op. 6 ................................................................................ by

Josef Suk

Josef Suk’s “Serenade for Strings” in E flat major, Op. 6 was composed in 1892 while Suk was studying at the Prague Conservatory. The lighter, cheerful music is a striking contrast to Suk’s signature melancholy style.

WOODSMOKE AND ORANGES............................................. by Ian Tamblyn, Arr. Rebecca Campbell “Woodsmoke and Oranges” contain colourful text about the beauty of the geographic features found in the northern parts of Lake Superior, including Gargantua Bay, Old Woman Bay, and Pukaskwa National Park. It is a small part of a series of works that led songwriter Ian Tamblyn to receive the Order of Canada for “his enduring contributions as a folk music icon, adventurer and cultural ambassador for Canada.” This haunting choral arrangement by Rebecca Campbell uses wind and percussion instruments to add to the imagery of the forces of nature present in Tamblyn’s original song.

As a member of the renowned vocal ensemble Sweet Honey in The Rock from 1979 - 2013, Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell brings her passion for singing in the African American tradition as well as community music-making as a vehicle for social justice. In “Wanting Memories,” Barnwell details the human experience of losing a close loved one and reflecting on the wisdom and joy that was gifted to the world during their lifetime.
