Houston, a Green Leader

The City of Houston continues to set the standard for other cities when it comes to being “green.” Houston is already known as the energy capital of the world, but we are committed to becoming the alternative energy capital of the world as well. We recently signed an agreement with Reliant Energy, an NRG Energy company, to purchase over 140 MW of renewable power for the next two years. During this time period, the City’s purchase of green power will account for half of its annual electricity demand. We will be using almost 623,000 mWh of green power per year, which is equivalent to the amount of kilowatt-hours needed to power over 55,000 homes each year. Purchasing green power reduces the environmental impacts of electricity use, decreases the cost of renewable power over time and supports the development of new renewable generation - a triple win for Houstonians. This purchase makes Houston the largest municipal purchaser of renewable power in the nation, and places us in the top 10 overall in the nation, according to estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency. The City has purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) that are Green-E certified.

Shahnaz Gilani: GOING SOLO By: Nargis Lakhani Shahnaz Gilani has been progressing slowly but steadily over the last so many years on the high-end fashion scene of Houston. Her homebased boutique has been popular with her loyal clientele. She understands the changing needs of the upward mobile clientele of Houston as well as those visiting Houston for special occasions like weddings and celebrations. She has converted more than half of her home into a structured boutique. The entire space devoted to the boutique is artistically developed. You enter her home and on the right is her beautifully designed and comfortable office where she first works on understanding her customer’s needs, personality, style and size. The second floor is almost fully devoted to displaying different types of clothing and accessories in individual rooms. One room has sarees while one has matching accessories and perfumes. The rest of the space is for the traditional shalwar-kameez, both of Pakistani as well as Indian styles. She specially gets the A+ size made on order too. Her favorite designer is ALAYNA ALAM. From the time she spotted an Alayna Alam designed outfit, Shahnaz was sold. Now their business partnership is many years old

but just as committed to each other as when it began. Shahnaz is all praise for Alayna who she says is a ‘beautiful human being’. As a designer in great demand, she has no airs around her and works hard to make sure her agents are successful. She creates unique designs and her choice of colors, fabrics, style and fit all carry her hallmark. Besides, she creates the A+ size on orders, that in itself if her USP(unique selling proposition); to have a size to fit to you. She never asks for payment in spite of sending large consignments which in itself is a great relief for people working on the field. Shahnaz Gilani held her first solo exhibition on the 15th of June at the Marriott, Town Center, Sugar Land and has just concluded the second solo on the 27th and the 28th of July at Marriott too. She is an aggressive saleswoman and goes the extra mile to satisfy her customers. Along with the extra hard work and a belief that every footstep that crosses the threshold of her home deposits its own barakaat, Shahnaz’s doors are open for business at all odd hours; sometimes there is a request at 1 AM. Since she is now comfortable holding solo shows, she has plans to have four of these annually. She is in the process of roping in Motiwala

Jewellers from Dallas to bring their diamonds over to lure the women of Houston. Shahnaz’s parents were from Daman, a city in Gujarat India but they then moved to Pakistan. Shahnaz came to the USA some 34 years ago and got hired in the first week itself. When she moved to Houston, she got a job at Target and within a short time got promoted to a Manager. She then moved to a more comfortable job in a high end jewelry store from which she moved on to help her own family business, when she decided to set up her own independent boutique. Her husband is her staunch supporter and helps out Shahnaz as much as he can. Since then there has been no turning back. A grandmother many times over, Shahnaz Gilani has a youthful air about her and a spring in her step. She looks beautiful and vibrant and has been promising herself to lose some weight. Her advice to women aspiring to get into the clothing business is to focus on ‘quality, quality and quality’ – quality of the material, quality of the workmanship and quality of the fit. Also, make the motto “Work is Worship” as your way of life.

The very first trip was a huge success. The group visited a host of business organizations in a number of cities: both in the manufacturing & service sectors, multinational corporations, various financial institutions, and government officials including then Honorable President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam and then U.S. Ambassador to India Mr. Mulford, in addition to of course touring various historical and sightseeing places. From then on, this program has become a regular feature every other year. The demand from students for this program is so great that they have been asked to conduct it every year instead of every alternate year. The basic objective of this study abroad India program is to make sure students

Dr. Khumawala and UH students with the Honorable Vice President of India, Shri Hamid Ansari learn about global expansion of businesses especially the emerging markets, challenges and opportunities and experience the Indian culture. It’s all about capitalizing on a vision of an equitable world by exposing the emerging young graduates to international business. In conjunction with this trip, the students take courses in International Business: Emerging Market Economies, and Supply Chain Management. Students read up the relevant Harvard Business School Cases, review them on the field through their visits and then come

Working in such markets allows for a double bottom line to be achieved; i.e. profits and people; sometimes it can even extend to the triple (ideal) bottom line: profits, people and planet (care of the environment). . Highlights of the 2013 Program: A group of 24 ’transformed students’ has just returned from such a Study Abroad India trip this June. The trip had some outstanding features. Visit with the Honorable Vice President of India Shri Ansari at his official residence who also hosted them to high tea What an honor and a treat - a memory of a lifetime. The group visited New Delhi, Agra, Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai. The company and other visits included the Indian School of Business, and offices of Microsoft, Google, Deloitte, the Taj Hotels management to study their service operations and environmental initiatives, Falaknuma Palace, TATA Motors, Infosys, BMC Software, and The Aga Khan Museum. The group personally met with the “Dabbawalas” (the lunch-box carriers) in Mumbai and witnessed their operations in action, visited five different slums where they interacted with the recipients of Mi-

crofinance loans (mostly women) and their bankers, and capped their trip with a visit to the Bombay Stock Exchange and a meeting with the Executive Director of the Reserve Bank of India and her team. Of course, the group also experienced the monsoons in Bombay, without which their trip could not have been complete. They did sightseeing in all the cities they visited including visits to the Taj Mahal in Agra and Fatehpur Sikri.. They experienced rickshaw rides, saw snake charmers, ate a variety of foods, visited different places of worship, learned few words in different languages, and of course shopped. A lasting memory for Drs. Khumawala is when on the last day of the trip, the students made an unusual gift to the professor couple. The students had observed the tremendous amount of work they had put in to make the trip so very successful. They collectively presented the couple with a very generous gift card. Needless to say the professors were very touched by this gesture and thanked the group. However, instead of accepting the gift for themselves, they in turn donated it on behalf of the group to the charity they established, Pennies for Education and Health (PEH), (www.pehchildren.org) which provides education for needy children in Ahmedabad, Baroda and other cities in Gujarat and other parts of India. the part of the whole group is now going to help educate five needy students for a year. Wow! Something definitely worth remembering. The Khumawala couple run this charity; The Daily Cougar (the campus publication of UH) reported it under the heading Professors fight Poverty with Pennies – http://thedailycougar.com/2013/07/10/ professors-fight-poverty-with-pennies/ Pennies for Education and Health, a non-profit organization founded by Bauer professors Basheer and Saleha Khumawala that provides education and healthcare aid in developing countries, celebrated its decade-long battle against poverty last month in Ahmedabad, India. Basheer and Saleha who both grew up in Ahmedabad, visited the area after the Gujarat earthquake in 2003. The two described the devastation as mind-boggling, which inspired them to create PEH and help the people affected. “There were evacuees everywhere, and then their kids”, Basheer said. “So rather than simply going through the channels of schools or parents, the idea (for PEH) came from saying ‘Can we do something more personal, so that we can connect

5

AIR CHINA

with the child also?’” PEH matches students with sponsors whose donations provide the children with school supplies and other needs related to their education. Donations to PEH also help to support several healthcare facilities in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab, India. “There is an entire family living on less than $2 a day, so then where do you have the money to send the children to school?” Saleha said. “When you are poor, demand for money is in so many places, and that’s where we pick up. The only way to get the families uplifted is to make sure that the kids go to school, and then you can better tackle all the other issues of life.” The organization has made great strides when it comes to educating students. When PEH began in 2003, the organization sponsored 40 students. That number has now grown to 1,400 students. Additionally, PEH not only works to educate students abroad, but also gives UH students the opportunity to learn about running a non-profit organization first hand. The organization is mostly run by UH faculty and students, the entirety of the money donated goes directly for children’s

education. “I was once told that there is no man so poor that he cannot give a gift and no man so rich that he cannot accept one,” Saleha said. “These kids have been supported even by those who are poor but understand the value of a good education.” news@thedailycougar.com At the Bauer College, University of Houston, Dr. Saleha’s Microfinance program conducts the ‘Financial Education and Entrepreneurship Development Program’ free of charge collaborating with institutions that work on uplifting the quality of life of the downtrodden within the Houston community. At the end of the 12 week course, the participants are awarded a laptop (provided by a grant from Capital One) to help them move forward in life. An amazing opportunity for struggling but aspiring entrepreneurs. City360Houston wishes Dr. Saleha Khumawala all the very best to continue the good work that she is up to. For her it is about ‘giving back’. Let us all strengthen her hands in this ‘giving back’ process and become partners with her. Information about Dr. Saleha: 1. Saleha B. Khumawala Ph.D., CPA,

Professor of Accounting, Director, Nonprofit Management and Microfinance, C.T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston. Her husband, Dr. Basheer Khumawala, specializes in Supply Chain Management, is a John and Rebecca Moores Professor, C. T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston. Air China Connects Houston and Beijing with New Nonstop Service

Air China, the exclusive national flag carrier for the People’s Republic of China, begins its four weekly nonstop services between Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) in Beijing, China and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas today The inaugural flight from Beijing, CA 995, arrived at 3:40 this afternoon to a Texas-sized welcome which included a traditional water cannon salute. Houston Mayor Annise Parker was on hand to greet the delegation from China led by Ms. Yinxiang Wang, Co-Chairwoman of Air China Limited; Chinese Consul General for Texas and seven U.S. southern states and Puerto Rico, Ms. Erwen Xu; and, former Houston Rockets star and now Houston’s Honorary Goodwill Ambassador, Yao Ming. “Houston continues to enhance its position as a key global gateway and the arrival of Air China speaks volumes about the potential for even more growth in the future,” says Mayor Annise Parker. “The cultures and economies of Beijing and Houston continue to draw closer together than ever before and nonstop air service between the two cities will help both sides maximize the benefits associated with

new partnerships and greater connectivity.” With the launch of the nonstop service, Houston becomes Air China’s fifth gateway in North America, joining Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Vancouver. Air China will operate inside Terminal D at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston’s gateway for all foreign carriers. “As the only airline that provides direct connection between Houston and the south central region of the United States and China via Beijing, we are honored to be the cultural, social and economic bridge between our two great destinations. This new service demonstrates Air China’s commitment to expanded connectivity for the mutual benefits of our countries and people,” Ms. Wang stated. Houston and Beijing have enjoyed a strong relationship for several decades. China’s paramount leader, the late Deng Xiaoping, visited Houston during his historic trip to the United States in 1979. “The entire Houston region will benefit from this new Air China flight, both economically and from a cultural standpoint,” says Houston Aviation Director Mario Diaz. “Four weekly nonstop flights between the two destinations will not only strengthen the business ties between Houston and Beijing but will also enhance the level of cultural enrichment and exchange that already exists between these two dynamic cities.”

I'm doing more work than B-Town skinny-minnies When asked about her weight issues recently by a news agency, Sonakshi Sinha was apparently in a rather hit back mode. The star quipped, `I am very happy doing work and lot of work. Probably more than the skinny-minnies.

Kapoors are extremely angry over Ranbir-Katrina's racy holiday pics Apparently, Rishi and Neetu Kapoor are extremely angry about holiday snapshots of Ranbir with alleged sweetheart Katrina Kaif doing the rounds There's no denying that there has been a sudden spurt in the number of photographs and buzz about Ranbir Kapoor's alleged romance with Katrina Kaif grabbing headlines. And those close to the Kapoors say that RK's parents, Rishi and Neetu are extremely upset with their son's personal life being splashed across the pages.

Sources say his mum is especially miffed with his love life being talked about in the open. Intimate photographs of Ranbir and Katrina on their recent holiday in Ibiza is what seems to have sent the actor's parents hopping mad. A source says, `Ranbir's parents have never reacted very well to news about their son's dalliances. They feel this will affect his professional life. ` An enraged Rishi Kapoor said, `I don't subscribe to this nonsense, ` before abruptly ending our phone call.

Blasts from the past After Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone slammed Ranbir on Karan Johar's chat show a few years ago, it apparently annoyed the Kapoors to no end. Rishi even went to the extent of saying he would never work with Karan again. They eventually patched up. Even a while ago when our publication reported about Ranbir's alleged romance with aspiring actress Angela Jonsson, a friend of Neetu had conveyed the matriarch's displeasure.

Nargis Fakhri fumes: I'm single, not ready to mingle

Actress Nargis Fakhri, who has been linked to actor-filmmaker Uday Chopra, says she is not seeing anyone "I am single and not ready to mingle. I am only here to work. I have a goal and I want to concentrate on that. Your career keeps you so busy, there is no time," added Nargis, who was seen in 2011 musical-romantic hit "Rockstar" as Ranbir Kapoor's on-screen love interest. Uday expressed his love for Nargis on microblogging site Twitter and his tweets set the tongues wagging. The one-film old actress admits being bothered by link-up news in the beginning, but has learned the tricks to handle them. "In the beginning it was difficult because you feel bad, you don't understand what's going on. You get messages where people are congratulating you, and you feel, 'For what?',"she said. "So, you are very confused in the beginning, but slowly you try to understand as it continues to happen. You don't understand where it is coming from, but you understand this is how it is." Currently, Nargis is busy promoting her second Hindi film, "Madras Cafe", a spy thriller, which also stars John Abraham. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, "Madras Cafe" is slated for an Aug 23 release.

It was decided during the visit of Telecom and IT Minister Kapil Sibal to Israel last month, they said. Sibal and his Israeli counterpart Gilad Erdan in a meeting agreed that both the countries can cooperate on exploring the possibilities of standard formulation, development and manufacturing in the area of 4G and 5G telecom technologies. “Israel has technology and innovation, India has the capital and market. The two areas which emerge out of discussion related to telecom were: reducing roaming charges between India and Israel and exploring the possibilities of standard formulation, research and development, and manufacturing in the area of 4G and 5G,” a DoT official said. Currently, Indian telecom operators are providing 2G, 3G and some 4G services. No country in the world has 5G technology while some companies claim to have tested 5G technology. There have been claims by companies that 5G technology will be in place by 2020. The versions of technology 2G, 3G etc are labeled on the basis of Internet speed they offer on mobile devices. Technology experts believe 5G technology will enable people to have a fibre network like user experience on a wireless connection. It can provide speed of 10 Gigabit per second internet speed, which is 100 times faster than the mobile technology used these days.

Pakistan wrap up West Indies’ tour on winning note St Vincent - Pakistan wrapped up their tour of the West Indies with an 11-run win in the second Twenty20 international in St Vincent on Sunday to complete a one-day double over the world T20 champions. The visitors ran through the home team's top order at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown to lay the foundation for success as they defended a modest target of 135 for seven by restricting the West Indies to 124 for nine from their 20 overs. It ensured a successful conclusion to Pakistan's tour on the back of a 3-1 win in the five-match ODI series played in Guyana and

who lobbed a ball straight to cover and was out for one. Dwayne Bravo, Narine and Kieron Pollard threatened a dramatic rescue, even though the asking run rate went to more than 12 an over. During a dramatic 17th over, Pollard smashed 20 runs off the first four balls with two sixes landing on the roof of the stand. Zulfiqar Babar then had him caught in the deep and took a second wicket with the next ball, dismissing Bravo in similar fashion. Tino Best, the last man in, threatened some drama too with two huge sixes but fell short in the end.

St Lucia. Opener Ahmed Shehzad scored a breezy 44 in 53 balls but was not supported by his partners. His departure for the fourth wicket in the 13th over brought Umar Akmal to the crease and he took over the scoring responsibility on a slow track. While spinner Sunil Narine threatened to sweep through the rest of the Pakistan batting, taking three wickets in a second spell at the end of the innings, Akmal helped push the tally to 135 with an unbeaten 46 off 56 balls. In reply, West Indies lost their first three wickets in three overs, including another failure for Chris Gayle,
