Will it be Anandiben Patel rains North India who holds some batter key portfolios, including revenue, in his minisPage NEWSMAGAZINE try or will finance minister Nitin Patel be elevated from No. 2 in the cabinet to No. 1? Or will the Gujarat strongman place his boost energy minister Saurabh Patel, who has a rapport with industrialists and business leaders or will he rely on his close aide Amit Shah?

7

Among the names doing the rounds is that of Anandiben Patel, Modi’s most trusted confidante and minister who holds key portfolios such as urban development, besides revenue. She is also in charge of Ahmedabad city and district, the political bastion of the saffron party in Gujarat. Though she is 68 years old and has some health problems, Anandiben is regarded as the front runner to replace Modi if he moves to Delhi. She is not a mass leader but enjoys Modi’s absolute trust and is not very ambitious. She is, however, the arch rival of Amit Shah, another powerful protege of Modi.

L A I C E

Karim Farishta:

These names are being discussed because Modi, who has been ruling Gujarat since October 2001 with a firm grip on the administration and party organisation, has himself become a political giant without a strong second line of leadership. Modi is undoubtedly the most popular

But if Modi decides on someone who has sound relations with big business, then he could promote energy minister Saurabh Patel, 55, an MBA from the US.

Wins 'The Voice'

"The Voice" season four crowns Danielle Bradbery as its youngest champion ever on Tuesday (June 18). After grueling weeks of battles and live shows including phenomenal final performances last night, Team Blake's country prodigy beat fellow teammates the Swon Brothers and Team Usher's Michelle Chamuel to win the coveted title.

Then, there is a possibility of Amit Shah, 51, stepping into Modi’s shoes. Currently a national general secretary of the BJP in charge of the party’s affairs in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, Shah is facing a triple-murder charge in the case involving the killing of gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauser Bi and accomplice Tulsiram Prajapati. Shah is fiercely loyal to Modi and is an extremely shrewd politician with formidable organisational skills.

Also in the race is Nitin Patel, 58, the No. 2 in the Modi cabinet. The finance and health minister recently presided over a cabinet meeting when Modi was unwell. That was the first time in Modi’s 12-year rule that a minister was allowed to do so. Nitin has been an old guard of the BJP, having been a protege of Keshubhai before he moved to the Modi camp.

leader in the state but he has finished a generation of stalwarts in the BJP in Gujarat. As a senior Gujarat BJP MP close to party patriarch LK Advani said, “90% of sitting BJP MLAs in Gujarat would not have won without Modi. Their dependence on him is absolute. Minus Modi, the Gujarat BJP would not even win 70 seats in the state.” “Ever since Modi became CM, there has been tremendous centralisation of power, with only a handful of ministers and a few bureaucrats running the show,” said a retired bureaucrat who worked with Modi for several years. Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela, once a prominent BJP leader credited with creating the party’s base among the OBCs in Gujarat, said, “Way back in 1995, in a letter to LK Advani, I had explained how power hungry Modi is and what he is doing to drive a wedge between me and Keshubhai (Patel). Advani has now realised this when Modi has almost finished him.” (HT)

Texting and Driving:

It Can Wait, Houston! By

Mayor A nnise Parker

The days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the 100 deadliest days for teen drivers. 30 percent of teen driver deaths occur during this timeframe. Sadly, many of these deaths will occur because they and others are texting while driving. It’s time for our teens and the rest of us to pledge to end this deadly habit. It’s also time for our city to take a role. Public safety is the responsibility of local government. Saving lives is the responsibility of us all. The city of Houston is coordinating an anti-texting and driving public awareness campaign called It Can Wait, Houston. Our local initiative is an extension of AT&T’s successful It Can Wait nationwide effort. While AT&T has laid the groundwork for bringing this issue to the forefront of the public discussion, the issue of texting and driving is too big for one company alone to bring about the societal change that’s needed. Houston’s campaign is the first of its kind in the nation, built on a model that other major cities can emulate and introduce throughout the country. To start with, I’ve enlisted the support of a broad-based task force consisting of local law enforcement, government, educational, corporate, medical, professional and faith-based organizations. The task force mem-

bers have agreed to not only help get the word out, but also consider developing company or institutional policies that prohibit texting while driving, if they don’t already have them. Several entities, including the Houston Texans, Dynamo, Rockets, and Comcast have agreed to broadcast public service announcements in support of this effort, reminding our friends and neighbors that no text message is worth risking one’s life and safety. Local rapper Bun B is helping with this part of the effort by appearing with me in the PSA. In addition, my Mayor’s Youth Council is working on a competitive video project to get the message to young Houston area drivers. And a joint team from

the Houston Fire and Police Departments conducted spring workshops in area high schools to impress upon teens the dangers of distracted driving. Despite the dangers, too many of us are engaging in this practice. Recent Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) data shows that 13 percent of traffic fatalities in 2011 were related to texting while driving. Without a change in the trend, there will be roughly 1.3 million traffic accidents nationwide due to texting while driving this year. Just as troubling, new research from AT&T indicates that 43 percent of commuters admit to a “habit” of texting while driving, even though they are aware of the risks. Previous studies have confirmed that those who

text while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash. The good news is the risks associated with texting while driving are totally preventable. But if we are to have an impact, we have to quit the bad habits, take responsibility for our own actions, and spread the word. The city of Houston—where commuting by car, SUV or pickup is a way of life—recognizes the need for a public-private collaboration to urge more citizens to adopt the personal commitment never to text and drive. It is my hope that other large cities will follow Houston’s lead, responding to this call for action at the local level and helping to put an end to a needlessly destructive practice. Our goal should be the same type of societal change that we saw from the public awareness campaigns that taught us the safety benefits of seat belts and the dangers of drinking and driving. Together, we can make a difference. As mobile technology continues to bring us closer together, let’s commit to using it responsibly. Taken alone, driving can be perilous enough, but texting and driving are a lethal combination. For your own sake and for the safety of your neighbors, It Can Wait. Take the pledge to stop texting while driving at www. itcanwait.com.

Karim Farishta: The Young Leader By: Nargis Lakhani

18 years old Karim Farishta’s journey as a humanitarian activist began way before he was even born. It began when his grandfather arrived as a ‘refugee’ into India some 70 years ago. Burma (now Myanmar) had turned communist and hordes of business people fled the country fearing persecution. Karim’s grandfather, Rehmatullah Farishta, along with his grandmother flew into the United States in 1988 to join their children in Texas. Mr. Farishta became the natural leader of the large family, as he was courageous, bold and resilient. The family looked up to him for advice and guidance in all matters. He is the unsung hero of their family, but unfortunately, he passed away when Karim was a sophomore in high school. His life had a tremendous impact on the young Karim, who loved him dearly. Grandpa’s memory became the beacon for all of Karim’s work not only in high school, but also for higher education at The George Washington University Elliot School of International Affairs in Washington D.C. Applying lessons learned from his grandfather's exemplary life, in his soph-

Karim and Pete Olson omore year at high school, Karim participated in an essay writing contest sponsored by the National Student Leadership Conference. His essay on ‘Globalization & International Business’ won him a spot as one of thirty selected participants to visit a place of choice. He chose to visit Geneva and meet with many people working for

United Nations(UN) as well as many other non-government organizations. He found all of these institutions working so sincerely to make this world a better place for the underprivileged. He had his first epiphany (insight) about what he wanted to be in the future. He decided that the UN was the ideal intersection of policy and project development, and he pledged to do all that was required of him to get there. The summer of 2011 was a landmark period in Karim’s journey. It was a period marked by predestined exploration into areas of concern that paved the way for his further journey. He wondered about the many challenges that his family must have faced in their leap from one country to another. Everyone in the family spoke so fondly of how grandpa had motivated and inspired each one from the family to create a fresh, successful life in the United States . To that end, during his junior year, he took the initiative to join Model United Nations at his school. At a conference in the University of Texas, he was a delegate for the United Nations High Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) of South Africa with

aims of revising resettlement and social inclusion options. On the other hand, in the real world, the Arab Spring was in full force and there were groups of refugees escaping their homelands in North Africa. There was a frantic effort by the UNHCR delegates of from these respective countries appealing to the UN to help resettle these refugees in host nations. The United States, in its magnanimity, was accepting refugees as a tradition it had created for itself from its very inception. Karim was intrinsically drawn to studying the process of how refugees were traditionally resettling. He started further studying the various problems of the refugees across the globe and he got a second epiphany (insight). "No matter where the refugees come from and where they try to relocate, the challenges they endure and the issues that they have to deal with are similar. "Karim started speaking about the issues of refugees on various platforms inside and outside of school. He took an academic assignment in school as a research project to identify the plight of refugees. His search took him to organi-

zations like the ‘Interfaith Ministries’, 'The Alliance for Multicultural Services’ as well as the ‘Community Cloth’. Karim filmed a documentary near a local Houstonian neighborhood center and complex where over 3000 refugees lived. He focused his documentary on one woman who was a heroine overcoming all the obstacles, one-by-one. Karim was amazed by this woman’s courage and resilience and felt that this woman’s story was deserving of making the headlines. He remembered his Grandpa's willpower and got his third epiphany – refugees are very resilient. Karim now felt even more committed to help refugees. This research project paved the way for his next step. It helped him get selected into the Fort Bend ISD Gifted & Talented Mentorship Program. He now started thinking bigger and became even more confident about his cause. Since his grandfather’s memory was still very strong in his mind, he also placed an emphasis on the Burmese immigrant community in Houston. He created a research case study titled ‘Improving Burmese Refugees Resettlement Services in Houston through a Cultural based Self Sufficiency Approach.’ As luck would have it, immigration reforms were the big ticket item being discussed on

Karim with family the political forums. Policies about refugee resettlement had not changed much to accommodate new ethnic groups and were in a dire need for modifications. Karim was looking for creating a model that would allow for the refugee community to smoothly adjust into the plural fabric of America without causing ruptures. This study shed light on many other humanitarian concerns and the facts were shocking. Very little attention was actually being given to the concerns of the refugees. What he saw and understood appalled Karim to no end. He couldn’t believe his eyes that so many of fellow community members were living in such degradation just a few miles from his own neighborhood. While Karim's efforts were in full swing,

in August 2012 he had the coincidence of attending the TEDxSugarland and a seed got planted in his mind. One of the speakers that fanned the spark in Karim’s heart was Faridoun Hemani (We have done a feature on him in our previous edition of May). Faridoun uttered a statement that became a mantra for Karim: “To the world you may be one person but to the one person, you may be the world.” Thus was born the “Global Issues Summit.” Karim along with the support of an extraordinary group of dedicated students and Anne Beckman, the Global Studies Academy Coordinator, hosted the 1st Annual Global Issues Summit with its vision being – “turning awareness into action.” The Global Studies Academy “…

prepares students for world citizenship by providing opportunities to learn global languages and to develop the intellectual skills needed to make global connections among all disciplines,” whilst the mission of the Global Issues Summit is to “… spread awareness about a range of global concerns to the community and inform others about current initiatives and ways to get involved.” Everybody who attended was impressed and supportive. It was organized along the lines of the TED Talks with speakers representing organizations that were already in action in the field. However, there was an additional element to this summit. After the presentations tables were set up where speakers were available to talk about internship and youth engagement opportunities within their organizations. This was the objective that Karim had had in mind for this Summit, of converting awareness into action, of getting the High School students interested to take up internship with organizations working on humanitarian Issues. The Summit had Faridoun Hemani as its keynote speaker whilst other distinguished speakers spoke on a range of activities. Bush Airport Wins International Award for Green Efforts The Houston Airport System (HAS) is receiving international acclaim for its Ecopark parking operation, located at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The environmentally sensitive parking system recently secured an Award of Excellence from the International Parking Institute (IPI). The recognition from IPI is the result of a restructuring and rebranding effort involving the airport system’s previous parking operation. The change involved switching the operation’s fleet of 30 shuttle buses to a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling system utilizing and changing the name from “Parking Cents” to “Ecopark.” “We had one clear goal throughout this process and that was to improve the environmental impact of our parking operation,” says Houston Airport System Parking Director, Liliana Rambo, CAPP. “That was the compass that kept us moving in the right direction and the new name and the switch to CNG simply stemmed from that commitment. “

Voting members of the IPI 2013 Awards of Excellence competition were impressed by the efforts enough to recognize the Houston Airport System in the category of “Innovation in a Parking Operation or Program and Excellence in Sustainability Relating to Existing Facilities.” The Ecopark parking operation was one of only seven submissions to garner recognition from the IPI judging panel, joining other recipients from as far away as Portugal. “These facilities are not simply efficient and sustainable, but are literally transforming neighborhoods, workplaces and entire

communities,” says IPI Executive Director, Shawn Conrad, CAE. "They prove that parking is much more than just car storage. Parking can be the nucleus for creating more walkable, livable cities.” The Ecopark parking operation has certainly had an impact in improving Houston’s environmental footprint. The switch to CNG fueling brings about a 90% reduction in particulate matter and an 85% reduction in Nitrogen Oxide. Compressed natural gas is also cheaper than traditional fueling sources, a fact which allows HAS to reinvest in additional green efforts such

Management Department (SWMD) is pleased to announce an additional 35,000 households (see list below) will be added to its popular automated curbside recycling program. As part of the expansion, residents in neighborhoods throughout Houston will receive one 96-gallon green automated cart similar to the black automated garbage cart. “I am pleased that we continue to expand our recycling services. This is the first of two expansions this calendar year where we will double the number of homes with single stream recycling. Our recycling efforts show great financial responsibility in not paying to dispose of valuable commodities, as well as creates local jobs by appropriately managing resources,” said Mayor Annise Parker. “Since first implementing the initiative in 2009, residents have overwhelmingly been asking to be included in this program. It’s convenient because participants can place their unsorted recyclables, including glass, in one city-provided container with wheels that makes it easy to roll to the curb,” said Harry Hayes, SWMD Director. An additional expansion to 70,000 households is planned in the fall. Recyclable items that can be placed in the containers include: newspapers, magazines, office paper, junk mail, cardboard, paperboard, paper bags, glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans, tin and steel cans and plastics 1 – 5 and 7. For more details about the Summit, visit http://clementsgsa.wix. com/globalissuessummit Karim has won the Gulen Institute Youth Platform Award awarded to only 30 students from across the globe for promoting hospitality in the global village especially for various immigrant communities. Karim has also recently been awarded the Princeton University’s Prize on Race Relations, Honorable Mention, for advocating racial harmony and social coexistence. These last four years of high school have been momentous for Karim; so much has happened in young Karim’s life and Karim, in turn, has achieved so much too. At times he is overawed by his own achievements. However, he has his head firmly on his young shoulders. As he prepares to go to Washington D.C. to study International Development and Conflict Resolution, Karim looks forward to engaging with many world leaders to build bridges and learn the ropes. He has his future clearly carved out for himself. He is preparing himself to play a critically important international role in the UN to create a more equitable world. Karim has a request to make to the parents of high school students. From his own experience he knows how critical the role of parents is in shaping the personality of the growing adult. He wants parents to be more ambitious and audacious for their children. He wants parents to share their experiences openly and honestly with their children from an early age and not cocoon them from knowing about the extreme hardships that they have been through in their process of migration. Karim shares his wisdom on this subject in the following words, “When we forget our own history, we lose who we are and what we can do for others.” He encourages all the significant others in the children’s lives to ignite the spark in the hearts of the young people to go out and change the world for the better. There can be no nobler cause than nurturing the ambitions of the young. Watch out for Karim, cheer him on, join him, support him, do something towards dissipating the Global Issues, move “from awareness into action”.

Rain toll rises to 81 in India, thousands remain stranded LAS VEGAS: A 25-year-old contestant from Connecticut has won the title of Miss USA in Las Vegas. Erin Brady won the beauty pageant on Sunday night at the Planet Hollywood hotel-casino after strutting in a white sparkly gown and answering a question about the U.S. Supreme Court's decision upholding widespread DNA tests. Asked if she agreed with the decision, Brady said she did. Brady gets the crown and a New York apartment for one year. She is expected to spend her title reign on a nationwide speaking tour and raising breast and ovarian cancer awareness, the organization's official cause. Unlike the rival Miss America pageant, Miss USA does not ask its queens to perform a talent or choose a charity mission.

Brazen terror attacks in Balochistan shake Pakistan QUETTA: The new Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government, which had received praise from all quarters over the nomination of National Party’s Dr Abdul Malik Baloch as Balochistan chief minister, on Saturday received a serious reality check over the deteriorating security and law and order challenges of the province. Early on Saturday (around 1am), unidentified militants destroyed a historic building once used by the country’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, setting off widespread panic. Hours later, two bombs rocked Quet-

ta and militants occupied a hospital complex, resulting in an armed battle that lasted over several hours, leaving over two dozen people dead. BOMBINGS AND HOSTAGE CRISIS The suicide bombing occurred in a bus carrying female students. At least 11 female students were killed in the attack while the 19 injured were rushed to the Bolan Medical Complex. The tragic day was not over as the injured people drove straight into an ambush by militants, believed to be linked with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ). The second explosion targeted the Bolan Med-

ical Complex, where the wounded were brought for treatment. At least 11 people died in a blast at the city hospital around 90 minutes after the first one. The day took another horrifying turn as a hostage crisis ensued in hospital. Senior Quetta officials were visiting the hospital when armed gunmen forced their way into the compound, leading to a heavy exchange of gunfire with security forces. Abdul Mansoor Kakar, the Quetta deputy commissioner, was killed as the gunmen took positions inside the medical complex. In the resultant battle that lasted three hours, four FC commandos were also killed. In official statements, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar said the bus bomb killed 14 students and wounded 19. “As casualties were being brought to the hospital, terrorists had taken position inside the hospital building,” he told reporters. “They opened fire on administration and police officials who arrived at the hospital. One suicide bomber blew himself up in the hospital.” Nisar said he was unable to give exact casualty figures of the hospital attack, but Abdul Wasey, spokesman

for the paramilitary Frontier Corps earlier said 11 were killed and 17 wounded in the bombing. The brazen attacks shook the country and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif instructed Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to provide assistance to the provincial government to control the situation. Nisar told reporters that four suspected terrorists were killed while one suspect was arrested alive during the operation. ICONIC BUIDLING BOMBED At least 10 to 12 militants attacked Jinnah’s Residency, as the building was called, in Ziarat, about 74 miles from Quetta. They used rockets and hand grenades, officials said, and a police guard was killed. Explosions caused a fire that quickly engulfed the two-storey building. The facade made of timber was turned to ashes. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a militant separatist group that is fighting for the independence of mineral-rich southwestern Balochistan province, claimed responsibility for the attack. They also replaced the national flag at the building with a BLA flag. “We blew up the Ziarat Residency,” Meerak Baluch, a spokesman for the Balochistan Liberation Army said in a phone call from undisclosed location. “We don’t recognise any Pakistani monument.”

India to be world's most populous country by 2028 India will surpass China as the world's most populous country by 2028, the United Nations reports in a new study that predicts world population will rise to 9.6 billion by 2050 The UN’s World Population Prospect: The 2012 revision report, launched in New York on Thursday, said much of the overall increase through 2050 would take place in high-fertility countries, including Asian nations with large populations such as India, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines. India’s population is expected to overtake China’s around 2028, when both countries will have a populations of around 1.45 billion, the report stated. India’s assumption of the title as the world’s most populous country has been predicted many times in the past

years. But, due to fertility levels, the date keeps getting pulled forward. Previous UN studies had predicted the switch by 2030. China and India’s current populations are estimated at 1.3 billion and 1.2 billion, respectively. “(After 2028), India’s population will continue to grow for several decades, to around 1.6 billion, and then decline slowly to 1.5 billion in 2100. The population of China, on the other hand, is expected to start decreasing after 2030, possibly reaching 1.1 billion in 2100,” the report said. During 2013 to 2100, eight countries were expected to account for over half of the world’s population increase, including Nigeria, India, Tanzania, Congo, Niger, Uganda, Ethiopia and the United States.

Turkey PM claims victory after protest crackdown ISTANBUL - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday claimed victory over anti-government protesters after a heavy crackdown on the movement, as police raided homes and arrested dozens of demonstrators to stamp out nearly three weeks of unrest. After a weekend of heavy clashes sparked by the eviction of protesters from Istanbul’s Gezi Park, the focal point of the protests, demonstrators struggled to regroup and police have since fought only sporadic battles with smaller groups of demonstrators across the country. Overnight, riot police in the capital Ankara, briefly fired tear gas and used water cannons on protesters who hurled back stones and hid behind makeshift barricades; but there were no other reports of confrontations. In Istan-

bul, dozens of demonstrators switched to silent protests, standing still, in quiet defiance, in the main Taksim Square located next to Gezi Park. As the protests appeared to lose their intensity, Erdogan said he had overcome the crisis, seen as the biggest challenge yet to his Islamic-rooted government’s decade-long rule. “Our democracy has been tested again and came out victoriously,” the premier told members of his ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) to roaring applause. “The people and the AKP government have foiled the plot ... hatched by traitors and their foreign accomplices.” Confident that he has weathered the storm, he warned against any resurgence of the protests. “From now on, there will be no question of showing any tolerance to people

or organisations who engage in violent acts.” Erdogan has been widely criticised for his handling of the crisis, with the United States and other Western allies strongly condemning the use of excessive police force against protesters. But the premier said the police had “successfully passed the test of democracy” with their response to the unrest and vowed to increase their powers. His comments came as police carried out raids at homes across the country, detaining dozens of demonstrators. In Istanbul, officers arrested around 90 members of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), a small leftist group that has been active in the demos, the Istanbul bar association said. Local media said 30 people were also arrested in Ankara and another 13 in the north-

western city of Eskisehir. Interior minister Muammer Guler spoke of 62 arrests in Istanbul and 23 in Ankara, and said they were linked to an ongoing anti-terrorist probe into the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party (MLKP) “which also took part in the Gezi Park protests”. More than 500 demonstrators had already been arrested on Sunday in clashes that raged after the Gezi Park eviction, the Istanbul and Ankara bar associations said. Turkey’s crisis began when a sit-in to save Gezi’s 600 trees from being razed in a redevelopment project prompted a brutal police response on May 31. The violence snowballed into countrywide demonstrations against what demonstrators say are Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian and conservative Islamic policies.

Passionate About Serving Our Community Shahid Usmani, Sales Manager at Sterling McCall Toyota By: Nargis Lakhani

Many years back, Shahid went into a dealership to buy a car but was left unattended for over a half hour. Being a businessman himself, Shahid knew it was important that a customer be attended to promptly and he promised himself that making the customer feel welcome as well as prompt service would always remain his priority. “See a customer; see him as dollars” is his simple business principle. He transitioned from being an entrepreneur manufacturing electronics to becoming a ‘sales manager’ at Sterling McCall Toyota, located at 9400 Southwest Freeway. It is now over eight years since he has been with this prestigious company and absolutely loves his work. Another experience made Shahid commit to serving his own community. It stems again from a not very pleasant encounter that he had whilst scouting around to buy the same car mentioned above. Shahid had gone into a dealership and seeing a desi salesman, had expected to be served by him. The desi salesman avoided him. He later overheard the salesman telling a colleague that he’d much rather not serve his own kind as they were difficult customers. This comment disturbed Shahid who feels that we have a duty to stand by our own community and serve them like family members. The South Asian Community is hard-working, puts great value on money and has a good credit standing. They are serious customers and if you as a salesman can value these traits and serve the customer from this perspective then you can seal the deal. With this attitude and approach Shahid and his large dedicated team have been able to increase the South Asian Customer base from being at 20% a few years back to 48%. He has set his targets to raising this to around 60%. Thus this increase in the desi customer base has helped

the company to grow its overall sales target. The South Asian immigrant community in Houston is very diverse and Shahid’s team is capable of conversing in over 15 languages: from Urdu, Gujrati, Bengali to Nepali. On any given Saturday, the dealership is packed with desi families who have come out to either buy new cars or trade in their old ones. Best Service, Best Price and A Life-time of Customer Service is his promise. This dealership often helps customers with challenges to their credit history, get the best deals as well as loans at 0% interest. Shahid was the first desi to be appointed to the prestigious position of Sales Manager. He in turn has made a conscious effort to give lots of employment opportunities to desis. In fact, he creates openings for the right people and they are always welcome, provided they are willing to uphold the company’s values. Shahid sees a great future for the desi community in this country and urges us all to stand by each other, to look out for each other, to go the extra mile for each other and to be equally committed to the other’s success. That is the ultimate challenge for our community to prosper in this wonderful country that we now call home. The Sterling McCall Toyota Dealership owned by the group 1 auto is the fastest growing automotive company in the USA. It has been serving Houstonians from its current location for over 35 years; it is known to be one of the best Toyota dealerships in the USA. Shahid is proud to be a part of this successful group. It values its desi customers and looks forward to do its best for them as always and uphold its mission of “..Commitment to Excellence”

Google Wants to Use Balloons to Cover the World in Wi-Fi X Lab which is bringing the world Google Glass and self-driving cars. Wired reports: It is an audacious proposal, and today in Christchurch, Google is holding a press conference with New Zealand's Prime Minister to formally unveil it. Google will also stage Project Loon’s biggest trial yet: 50 testers in Christchurch within the 12-mile range of the balloons will see if they can get connected from the sky. How the heck will Google control the Internet giving balloons? Variable buoyancy, apparently. It means steering by tweaking altitude to find desirable wind currents. That sounds like guessing to me but Google insists it's controlled better than that. Google lets the balloons fly naturally but also will move them up or down to catch winds in the direction Google wants the balloons to travel in. The balloons will be carried by wind at altitudes twice as high as planes and "beam Internet access to the ground at speeds similar to today’s 3G networks or faster."

If you go deep inside the desert or climb a mountain or find yourself in the South Pole or a remote farm or any place that can be considered 'the middle of no where', guess what? You have no internet. Well, Wired is reporting that Google wants to change all that by sending high-altitude balloons into the stratosphere to give the world Wi-Fi. Whoa. Because of course Google would dream something as impossible and radical as cloaking the world in balloons 60,000 feet above sea level so that the entire world can get on the Internet. It's something straight out of meetings about the future, something rooted in conversations between smart people who only ask each other "But why not?", something even Google itself admits is crazy by calling it Project Loon. What is Project Loon exactly? Only a plan to get hundreds and thousands of high-pressure balloons to circle the Earth and given internet to billions of people on Earth. It's part of Google's famed Google

MADHUBALA

The Legend

Madhubala was born Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehlavi in New Delhi, on 14 February 1933, to Muslim parents of Pashtun (Pathan) descent, and was the fifth of eleven children. The family lived in Delhi. According to her sister, Madhur Bhushan, she was born a blue baby, which would later have implications on her health. After Madhubala's father, Ataullah Khan, lost his job at the Imperial Tobacco Company in Delhi, he relocated his family to Mumbai. Madhubala's three sisters and two brothers died when at the age of five and six, and with his six remaining daughters to provide for, Khan, and the young Madhubala, began to pay frequent visits to Bombay film studios to look for work. At the age of 9 this was Madhubala's introduction to the movie industry, which would provide financial help to her family. Early Career Madhubala's first movie, Basant (1942), was a box-office success. She acted as the daughter to a mother played by actress Mumtaz Shanti. As a child actress she went on to play in several movies. Actress Devika Rani was impressed by her performance and potential, and advised her to assume the screen name 'Madhubala', meaning 'a woman of honey'. Madhubala achieved a reputation as a reliable professional performer, and by adolescence she was being groomed for lead roles.[citation needed] Her lead role break, at 14-years-old, was with producer Kidar Sharma when he cast her opposite Raj Kapoor in Neel Kamal (1947). The film was not a commercial success but her performance was well received.[citation needed] This was the last film in which she was credited as Mumtaz before assuming her screen name 'Madhubala'. She achieved popularity in 1949 when she was cast as the lead in Bombay Talkies studio's Mahal – a role intended for well-known star Suraiya. Madhubala, with established actresses, screen-tested

SONAM KAPOOR

Madhubala (14 February 1933 – 23 February 1969), born Mumtaz Jahan Dehlavi, was an Indian Bollywood actress who appeared in film classics Mahal (1949), Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and Mughal-e-Azam (1960). She was active between 1949 and 1960, after which illness shortened her career. With her contemporaries Nargis and Meena Kumari she is regarded as one of the influential Hindi movie actresses

for the role before she was selected by the film's director Kamal Amrohi. Following the film's release audiences and critics appreciated her screen presence, and her performance was seen to have upstaged her experienced co-star Ashok Kumar.[citation needed] The film was the third largest hit at the 1949 Indian box office. One of its songs, Aayega Aanewala, was sung by playback singer Lata Mangeshkar and lip synced by Madhubala.[citation needed] Following the success of Mahal, Madhubala appeared in the box office hits Dulari (1949), Beqasoor (1950), Tarana (1951) and Badal (1951). These films placed her among the most bankable and prolific actresses of the early 1950s alongside established contemporaries Kamini Kaushal, Suraiya and Nargis. Heart Condition Madhubala was found to have a heart condition in 1950; she had been born with a ventricular septal defect, or 'hole in the heart'. She hid her illness from the film industry but in 1954, while filming in Madras for S. S. Vasan's Bahut Din Huwe, she vomited blood on set.[citation needed] She was cared for by Vasan and his wife until she recovered. Because of her illness Madhubala's family provided her with home-prepared food and drinking water from a particular well, to minimize risk of infection. In spite of her medical condition she continued to work throughout the 1950s. Following Mahal, and during the first four years of her acting career, she played in up to twenty-four films. To secure for herself and her family financially, she accepted work on any film offered, causing her credibility as a dramatic actress to be compromised, something she later regretted.[citation needed] This indiscriminate choice of film role led critics to comment that her beauty was greater than her acting ability.[citation needed] Her contemporary, actress Nadira, said: "She was ecstatically, exasperatingly beautiful" and "She created

a kind of reverence, she had such an aura about her." She had aspirations to appear in more prestigious films with challenging roles, such as Bimal Roy's Biraj Bahu (1954). Having read the novel she was keen to secure the lead in the film adaptation. Assuming that she would command her high market price, Bimal Roy decided to cast Kamini Kaushal. When Madhubala learned that her fee in part lost her the role, she stated that she would have acted for one rupee.

Madhubala's co-stars Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Rehman, Pradeep Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Dev Anand were the most popular of the period. She appeared with Kamini Kaushal, Suraiya, Geeta Bali, Nalini Jaywant, Shyama and Nimmi, notable leading ladies. The directors she worked with, Mehboob Khan (Amar), Guru Dutt (Mr. & Mrs. '55), Kamal Amrohi (Mahal) and K. Asif (Mughal-e-Azam), were amongst the most prolific and respected. Madhubala also became a producer with the film Naata (1955), in which she also acted. During the 1950s, Madhubala took

starring roles in almost every genre of film being made at the time. Her 1950 film Hanste Aansoo was the first ever Hindi film to get an "A" – adults only – rating from the Central Board of Film Certification. [9] She was the archetypal fair lady in the swashbuckler Badal (1951), and following this, an uninhibited village beauty in Tarana (1951). She played the traditional ideal of Indian womanhood in Sangdil (1952), and produced a comic performance as the spoilt heiress, Anita, in Guru Dutt's satire Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955). In 1956 she acted in costume dramas such as Shirin-Farhad and Raj-Hath, and played a double role in the social drama Kal Hamara Hai (1959), where she became the cigarette-smoking dancer Bella, and her more conventional and saintly sister Madhu. In the mid-1950s her films, even in the major movie Mehboob Khan's Amar (1954), were so commercially unsuccessful that she was labelled "Box Office Poison". [this quote needs a citation] However, in 1958, she was associated with six box office hits. In Howrah Bridge, opposite Ashok Kumar, she played the role of an Anglo-Indian Cabaret singer involved in Calcutta's Chinatown underworld. In Aaiye Meherebaan she lip-synced a torch song dubbed by Asha Bhosle. She played opposite Bharat Bhushan in Phagun; Dev Anand in Kala Pani; Kishore Kumar in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi; and Bushan in Barsaat Ki Raat (1960). In 1960 she appeared in the historic epic Mughal-e-Azam. Madhubala made over seventy films from 1947 to 1964, only fifteen of which were box office successes. Despite this she remained in demand as an actress with producers and directors.[citation needed] Frequent co-star Dilip Kumar said: "She was extremely popular, and I think, the only star for whom people thronged outside the gates. Very often when shooting was over, there would be a vast crowd standing at the gates just to have a look at Madhu... It wasn't so for anyone else.

Sonakshi

Sonakshi Sinha is in two minds if she likes being labelled a lucky mascot. "It's a tag that has been given to me by the media and it's temporary," she says, adding, "Luckily however, my efforts have not been undermined. Also, at the end of the day, I don't think being called a lucky mascot is a negative thing. No one is saying, 'Sona can't act,' are they?" She may have a point there. But she is also making heads turn with her subtle '50s look in her upcoming film Lootera, which the 26-year-old credits to the film's research unit headed by director Vikramaditya Motwane. "A lot of research has gone into the film, not just the yesteryear look but the entire set, locations, costumes - attention was paid to the smallest detail," she says. A lot work has also been put into her expressions, she says. "There are several scenes in Lootera, especially romantic ones, where a lot had to be said through my eyes," says the actress, who proudly credits her good genes for what she says is the blessing of an 'expressive face'. Sonakshi claims there were enough and more people who tried to dissuade her from taking up the role in which she plays a Bengal zamindar's daughter deeply in love with a man who has his secrets. "Usually when I read a script, I imagine someone else playing the character, but not in this one," says the actress. "When Vikramaditya narrated the story to me, I could only imagine myself playing Pakhi (the female lead). I fell in love with the character and when more and more people started doubting my decision, I took it as a challenge, ab toh karke rahungi."

pacy and the movie’s plot is rightly in sync with the way the movie moves. The soundtrack of the film is pretty good with ’Fuk Fuk Fukrey’, ‘Jugaad Karle’ and ‘Ambarsariya’, all catchy and amazing songs to hear. The dialouges are very witty and enjoyable. There is one problem and that comes in the end, the movie doesn’t just end when you thought you would and this makes you a little anxious as I believed it was a bit stretched. Performances: Pulkit, Manjot, Ali and Varun, all of them have done a wonderful job and get a lot of time to shine on the screen. Pulkit just beams of confidence and looks like a great future ahead of him. Manjot performs brilliantly aswell. Ali who was last seen in Always Kabhi Kabhi is top class with his performance but Varun does a great job making you laugh and roll on the floor! Richa Chadda has done her part very convincingly and her introduction in the movie doesn’t bore you even though the trailers were focused on it. Pankaj Tripathi and Vishaka Singh have also done justice to their roles. All in all, a great movie with some amazing dialogues. You will enjoy and you will love it!

Boston woman pays $560,000 for 2 parking spots BOSTON: Parking is such a precious commodity in Boston that one woman was willing to pay $560,000 for two off-street spaces near her home. Lisa Blumenthal won the spots in the city's Back Bay neighborhood during an onsite auction Thursday held in a steady rain by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS had seized the spots from a man who owed back taxes. Blumenthal, who lives in a multimillion-dollar home near the parking spaces, tells The Boston Globe http://b.globe.com/13KqntI ) she didn't expect the bidding to go quite so high for the spots she says will come in handy for guests and workers. The record for a single spot in Boston is $300,000. The median price of a single-family home in Massachusetts is $313,000.

If you had to rank your priorities at the week's outset, work would be on top. The more career success you have, the more success you want -- and on Monday or Tuesday you have the chance to take a major step forward. Midweek you're in a strange position: You've gotten what you wanted and are wondering what's next. Someone who hasn't been as lucky may come to you for advice. Thursday you're surrounded by people who are in awe of you, which is nice but gets old fast. Friday, change the social dynamic by doing a favor for someone. Saturday you're introverted and dreamy, and Sunday's a blast.

Cancer 6/22 - 7/22

Don't let anyone give you grief for wanting to stay in on Monday and Tuesday. They have no idea what you're up against. If staying home is not an option, stay home metaphorically. Leave the lights on and make it seem like you're paying attention, but do the deep thinking you need to do. The funny thing is, on Wednesday, once you're ready to engage, someone else is in retreat. It's one of those weeks. Flexibility is key on Thursday, and your intuition is crucial on Friday. Saturday and Sunday, sit on a blanket in a park somewhere and let your mind wander.

Horoscope Taurus 4/20 - 5/20

The first two days of the week are enlightening. It's rare that people open themselves up and let you peer inside, but that's exactly what happens on Monday. On Tuesday, some basic truth gets turned on its head. Seeing things from other people's perspectives is always illuminating, and on Wednesday, it will be crucial in dispelling tension between you and someone who rubs you the wrong way. Thursday makes no sense whatsoever -- it's as if everyone's acting out for the sake of acting out -- but this weekend, real conversations with real friends return you to a sense of normalcy.

Leo

7/23 - 8/22

Your boldness is your greatest asset at the start of the week. It's wise of you to avoid coming across as arrogant, but sometimes a little egotism is in order. It demonstrates that you know what you want. You're uncompromising -- no wonder you're successful. A trip to the gym midweek (or a jog around the neighborhood) isn't a bad idea. Blow off some steam. A solution to a nagging problem comes to you unbidden on Thursday. Magic! Letting other people do the talking is essential on Friday, and creative projects and new faces occupy your energy this weekend.

It can't be overstated how impressed everyone else is with you. To keep your winning streak up, don't lose your characteristic modesty, and don't let your energy flag. Wednesday and Thursday require concentration and generosity. If someone lets you down, give them the benefit of the doubt. Friday and Saturday see you making advances on projects outside of work -- personal tasks, maybe a handwritten letter to an old friend -- but Sunday is a challenge.

Aquarius 1/20 - 2/18

There's too much happening for you to get a handle on any of it. In fact, you have the wideeyed wonder of a kid at the start of the week. It can be fun to see life as a jumble of images, a colorful phantasmagoria, but it's in your nature to try to make sense of it all. On Wednesday, you're inspired to make your mark on the world and may enlist some friends in a group project. Thursday is a great day, but Friday and Saturday a glitch in your finances has you in a grumpy mood. Put yourself first this weekend. Maybe spend Sunday between the pages of a book.

Week starting from June 23

Gemini 5/21 - 6/21

You have the sense that you're not dealing with a complete set of instructions -- certain parts of something are in a language you don't understand. Asking a friend for help on Monday or Tuesday might not improve matters. So what are you supposed to do? And what's up with this friend? Wednesday and Thursday, you look far and wide for insight, and surprisingly, you find it. Expect to see the world through a whole new set of goggles. On Friday, these goggles begin to cloud over (it's inevitable). Focus on creative pursuits Saturday and social pursuits Sunday, and everything will clarify with time.

Virgo

8/23 - 9/22 Monday and Tuesday, you're as excited as a kid in an ice-cream parlor. Your love life is going well -- either with a new romantic interest or a long-standing relationship -- and, actually, if there's an ice cream store near you, that might make for a great date. Wednesday and Thursday, your excitement spills over into other aspects of your life, and you might be compelled to buy new shelves or take a different bus to work. Change, you're beginning to understand, is awesome. Friday and Saturday, the details of your life suddenly seem incredibly confusing. Enjoy the madness.

Sagittarius 11/22 - 12/21

Say what you mean and mean what you say. That's the best approach to Monday and Tuesday. If others are gushing over a work of art in a museum and you just don't see it, say so. If someone's rude, call them on it. If you have a crush on someone, come clean. Communication is the prevailing theme of the week, although it won't be until Wednesday or Thursday that you find yourself really relating to the people around you. Friday and Saturday find you feeling a bit drained, so let others do the talking. Ask questions if you need to. On Sunday, recharge with a game in the park.

Pisces 2/19 - 3/20

You don't realize how much others are depending on you at the beginning of the week. The smallest gesture or word of encouragement can mean everything to someone else. Don't be shy about asking someone for help: Your friends love to be useful, and so do you. Midweek, do someone a favor that they didn't even ask for. You'll be doubly rewarded. Friday and Saturday, you continue to have a lot of energy and not enough outlets for it. Maybe a very long walk is in order -- even a two-hour, soul-searching walk. Pack a snack and bring your cell phone. Sunday finds you on an adventure of a different sort.

RAMADAN

JUNE 21, 2013

21

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and Muslims are required to fast during this month. The fast is to abstain from food, drink and marital relations from dawn until sunset, but Muslims are also encouraged to increase in their worship in general and also the recital of the Holy Qur’an. In accordance with the practice of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) Charity is also encouraged in this month and many choose this time of the year to fulfill the requirement of Zakaat.

The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, a number of other days. Allah desires for you ease; He desires not hardship for you; and that you should complete the period, and that you should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that perhaps you may be thankful. Thus, according to the Quran, Muhammad first received revelations in the lunar month of Ramadan. Therefore, the month of Ramadan is considered to be the most sacred month of the Islamic calendar, the recording of which began with the Hijra. Fasting Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, improvement and increased devotion and worship. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam. The fast (sawm) begins at dawn and ends at sunset. In addition to abstaining from eating and drinking, Muslims also increase restraint, such as abstaining from sexual relations and generally sinful speech and behavior. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the soul by freeing it from harmful impurities. Ramadan also teaches Muslims how to better practice self-discipline, self-control sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate; thus encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity (zakat). It becomes compulsory for Muslims to start fasting when they reach puberty, so long as they are healthy, sane and have no disabilities or illnesses. Exemptions to fasting are travel, menstruation, illness, older age, pregnancy, and breast-feeding. However, many Muslims with medical conditions insist on fasting to satisfy their spiritual needs, and healthcare professionals must work with their patients to reach common ground. Professionals should closely monitor individuals who decide to persist with fasting. While fasting is not considered compulsory in childhood, many children endeavour to complete as many fasts as possible as

Suhoor

Suhoor also called Sehur, Sehri, Sahari and Sahur in other languages, is an Islamic term referring to the meal consumed early in the morning by Muslims before fasting, sawm, in daylight hours during the Islamic month of Ramadan. The meal is eaten before fajr, or dawn. Suhoor as the morning meal is matched by Iftar as the evening meal, during Ramadan, replacing the traditional three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner), although in some places dinner is also consumed after Iftar later during the night. Being the last meal eaten by Muslims before fasting from dawn to sunset during the month of Ramadan, Suhoor is regarded by Islamic traditions as a benefit of the blessings in that it allows the person fasting to avoid the crankiness or the weakness caused by the fast. practice for later life. Those who are unable to fast are obliged to make up for it. According to the Quran, those ill or traveling (musaafir) are exempt from obligation, but still must make up the days missed later on. Suhoor and Iftar Each day before dawn, Muslims observe a pre-fast meal called suhoor. After stopping a short time before dawn, Muslims begin the first prayer of the day, the Fajr prayer. At sunset, families hasten for the fast-breaking meal known as iftar. Considering the high diversity of the global Muslim population, it is impossible to describe typical suhoor or iftar meals. Suhoor can be leftovers from the previous night's dinner (iftar), typical breakfast foods, or ethnic foods. In the evening, some dates are usually the first foods to break the fast; according to tradition, Muhammad broke fast with three

dates. Following that, Muslims generally adjourn for the Maghrib prayer, the fourth of the five daily prayers, after which the main meal is served. Social gatherings, many times buffet style, at iftar are frequent, and traditional dishes are often highlighted, including traditional desserts, especially those made only during Ramadan. Water is usually the beverage of choice, but juice and milk are also consumed. Soft drinks and caffeinated beverages are consumed to a lesser extent. In the Middle East, the iftar meal consists of water, juices, dates, salads and appetizers, one or more entrees, and dessert. Typical entrees are "lamb stewed with wheat berries, lamb kebabs with grilled vegetables, or roast chicken served with chickpea-studded rice pilaf". A rich dessert such as baklava or kunafeh ("a buttery, syr-

up-sweetened kadaifi noodle pastry filled with cheese") concludes the meal. Over time, iftar has grown into banquet festivals. This is a time of fellowship with families, friends and surrounding communities, but may also occupy larger spaces at masjid or banquet halls for 100 or more diners. Charity Men praying during Ramadan at the Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. Charity is very important in Islam, and even more so during Ramadan. Zakat, often translated as "the poor-rate", is obligatory as one of the pillars of Islam; a fixed percentage is required to be given to the poor of the person's savings. Sadaqa is voluntary charity in given above and beyond what is required from the obligation of Zakat. In Islam all good deeds are more handsomely rewarded in Ramadan than in any other month of the year. Consequently, many will choose this time to give a larger portion, if not all, of the Zakat for which they are obligated to give. In addition, many will also use this time to give a larger portion of sadaqa in order to maximize the reward that will await them on the Day of Judgment. In many Muslim countries, it is a common sight to see people giving more food to the poor and the homeless, and even to see large public areas for the poor to come and break their fast. It is said that if a person helps a fasting person to break their fast, then they receive a reward for that fast, without diminishing the reward that the fasting person got for their fast.

Laylat al-Qadr Sometimes referred to as "the night of power" or 'the night of decree", Laylat al-Qadr is considered the most holy night of the year. This is the night in which Muslims believe the first revelation of the Quran was sent down to Muhammad stating that this night was "better than one thousand months [of proper worship], as stated in Chapter 97:3 of the Qu'ran. Also, generally, Laylat al-Qadr is believed to have occurred on an odd-numbered night during the last 10 days of Ramadan, i.e., the night of the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th. End of Ramadan The Muslim holiday of Eid ulFitr (Arabic: ‫ﺭﻁﻑﻝﺍ ﺩﻱﻉ‬‎, "festivity of breaking the fast"), sometimes spelled in English as Eid al-Fitr, marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the next lunar month called Shawwal in Arabic. This first day of the following month is declared after another crescent new moon has been sighted or the completion of 30 days of fasting if no visual sighting is possible due to weather conditions. This first day of Shawwal is called Eid ul-Fitr. Eid Ul-Fitr may also be a reference towards the festive nature of having endured the month of fasting successfully and returning to the more natural disposition (fitra) of being able to eat, drink and resume intimacy with spouses during the day. For the manner in which the Eid is celebrated, see Eid ul-Fitr and Salat al Eid.

Spineless Pakistan hand India easy win

BIRMINGHAM: There was a plenty of hype before this match, but it turned out to be a damp squib, and not just because of the incessant rain. A one-sided spineless contest from Pakistan and the Indian juggernaut rolled on. Certainly not a match that will join the ranks of classic India-Pakistan matches. India put on a dazzling display in the field to bowl out Pakistan for 165 in 39.4 overs in a rain-hit Champions Trophy group B match on Saturday which was further reduced to 22 overs with a revised target of 102 runs. An India achieved the target losing two wickets with 17 balls to spare. Dinesh Karthik 11 and Virat Kholi 22 took India home. S Dhawan 48 and Rohit Sharma first set the foundation by making 48 and 18 runs respectively. With the pride that was at stake for Pakistan was dashed in. For India

four bowlers claimed two wickets each and the last two batsmen were run out after they sent Pakistan in to bat in front of flag-waving supporters from both sides who packed the Edgbaston stands. The match drew a full house even though it held only academic interest since India had already qualified for the semi-finals and Pakistan are out of the race after losing both their previous games. The game was reduced to 40-overs-aside due to rain stoppages. Further bad weather has been forecast over Birmingham for the rest of the day. Asad Shafiq top-scored with 41 and Umar Amin made 27 not out, but Pakistan's batting woes that had dogged them through the tournament continued. Opener Nasir Jamshed, whose previous five innings against India included three centuries and a half-century, managed only two when he was snapped up in the slips off Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. Pakistan plodded to 7-1 in the first five overs,

before a cover driven boundary by Mohammad Hafeez off Umesh Yadav, produced a flurry of fours from either end. Pakistan moved to 50-1 in 12 overs when a 15-minute interruption due to light rain caused them further trouble. Hafeez, who hit five boundaries in his 27, fell on the first ball after resumption, edging Kumar to a diving Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq helped Shafiq put on 54 runs for the fourth wicket on either side of a second rain stoppage, before he was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja for 22. Shafiq was dismissed with the help of a television review after umpire Richard Kettleborough initially rejected a catch down the leg-side by Dhoni off Ishant Sharma. Shoaib Malik was trapped leg-before by Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who had earlier dismissed Kamran Akmal, bowled Wahab Riaz to reduce Pakistan to 140-7.

Then, there is a possibility of Amit Shah, 51, stepping into Modi’s shoes.
