Mumbai crush Chennai to win IPL title KOLKATA: Bowlers barged tellingly into what was to be a battle between two good batting sides as Mumbai Indians won the world's richest T20 league for the first time on Sunday. Playing their second final, Rohit Sharma & Co. tamed Chennai Super Kings, the team that had denied them three years ago, with a 23-run victory at a packed Eden Gardens. It was the lusty hitting by Kieron Pollard that had given Mumbai a competitive total to defend. The West Indian, who sent the last two deliveries of the innings soaring for sixes, remained unbeaten on a 32-ball 60 as Mumbai reached
148 for 9. Two-time champions Super Kings never quite recovered from early jolts and finished on 125 for 9. Skipper MS Dhoni remained unbeaten on a 45-ball 63 that had three fours and three sixes. But all that was only stats in the end. In fact, early wickets had seriously set back both lineups. If the Super Kings forced their opponents to recover from 16 for three in the fourth over, Mumbai did one better, knocking down two in the very first over of the chase and then reducing the five-time finalists to three for three in the second and then 39 for 6 in the eighth.
Lasith Malinga, not quite himself in Season Six, found his form when it really mattered for Mumbai. Knocking off the dangerous Mike Hussey, the top run-getter of the tournament, with a signature toe-cruncher, the Sri Lankan 'Slinger' sent back Suresh Raina with a rising ball that the southpaw turned straight to square-leg. S Badrinath kept away another yorker to deny a first-over hat-trick but the tone had been set. Badrinath didn't linger long, chasing Mitchel Johnson into the gloves of Dinesh Karthik. Rishi Dhawan came on for one over to break the fledgling fourth-wicket partnership by gob-
bling up Bravo. Then, Harbhajan Singh, who too has found form late in the tournament, soon got into the act to pick up a couple of wickets. Doni refused to give in but when, with 50 needed off the last two overs, he refused singles to shield No.11 Mohit Sharma, the writing was on the wall. Earlier, winning a good toss on a wicket that lends itself nicely to slow bowlers in the second session, Mumbai saw that advantage wrested away in the first few overs as the CSK new-ball bowlers made the most of the early movement the wicket accorded.
Mohit Sharma, who has certainly held his own among the big names this season, had one nipping back to trap the dangerous Dwayne Smith in the very first over. Albie Morkel then yorked the in-form Aditya Tare with his first ball of the match and then had Rohit Sharma playing early and into his follow-through in his second over. Mumbai were dangerously pegged back. Karthik and Ambati Rayudu added 36 for the fourth wicket at just under six-an-over but it was after the former left that new-man Kieron Pollard pushed things.

Small Businesses/Job Seekers Can Benefit from New City-Sponsored Smart Phone App To that end, I am proud to announce the launch of a new citywide online platform to help Houstonians find jobs. “Tweetmyjobs Houston” uses innovative technology to combine the popularity of social media and the convenience of a smart phone application. The free service already has more than 150,000 Houston job postings from entry level to senior level corporate positions. Houston is the biggest economic success story in America, but the best can always get better. This free and user-friend-
ly online tool is the new way to find a job and hire in Houston. It will greatly simplify the hiring process, providing any employer, regardless of size, with the same fast and free access to the best and brightest recruits available. Likewise, job seekers will have instant and direct access to thousands of jobs via Facebook, Twitter, email or their mobile phone. It’s possible to walk down the street and view on your smart phone all the jobs available in your immediate proximity. This is truly a game-changer for Houston.

Executive Director Yani Rose Keo and Alliance Board President Dr. Patrick Leung presenting an award to Sanggar Tari Citra Indonesia
STARS AMONG US GALA By: Nargis Lakhani
Alliance for Multicultural Community Services whose mission is Helping People Achieve Independence organized its 14th Annual Gala at the Westin Galleria Hotel on Friday May 24th 2013. Amongst the many city luminaries present there was Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Dr. Patrick Leung is the Chair, Board of Directors and Yani Rose Keo is the Interim Executive Director. The Alliance provides comprehensive social services to refugees, immigrants and low-income residents of Harris County in order to help them achieve independence. Its annual Gala event helps it raise funds which go towards providing scholarships to many students from refugee families,
based on academic achievement and community service. Harris County of Houston has a diverse population with a mix of cultural heritages hence an organization like this alliance is a blessing for this county. As Congresswoman Sheila Jackson rightly pointed out, congress can pass bills but it is at the grassroots that these are implemented and the feedback as well as the demands received from the grassroots is what matters in their decision making process. The Alliance is saluted for strengthening community as building bridges. Founded in July 1985 by the Association of Cambodian, Ethiopian, Laotian and Vietnamese Refugee Community Organizations, it has grown from strength to

strength and by September 2009 it became the largest resettlement agency in Texas. The Alliance has served over 90,000 refugees, immigrants and low-income individuals in the Houston area through its various programs. Their program portfolio includes services in Resettlement, Employment, Center for Financial Opportunity, Driver’s Education, Case Management/ Health, Interpreter Services, Community Programs and Organic Community Gardens Project. The banquet hall was a glitter with everybody turned out in their best; it provided a great opportunity for the contributors to actually mix around as well as dine with the beneficiaries. It was a fun-filled evening which started at 6.30pm with a reception for all guests and
the alliance members in the hotel lobby. At 7.30 the doors were opened to the banquet hall with 23 tables, around each table sat 10 people, a diverse mix of people who got ample opportunity to share stories from their own backgrounds. On my table, I was able to interact with Narayan Dhaurali who works as an Agricultural Coordinator with the Alliance. He is from Bhutan and came in as a refugee (due to religious persecution) via Nepal. Also on our table I met another group of four farmers from Bhutan; this group was part of the Alliance’s Community Garden Program which also promotes cross-cultural communication to facilitate community building and encourage self-sufficiency within American Society.

The Honorees for the evening were John Wilkerson, Sam Osmanagich, Marylynn Kallina Matthews and Leeshan Chuang Birney – all of them for some form of outstanding community contributions. The Raffle Prize contributors were also the stars because the money raised through the sale of the tickets will go towards the scholarship for the future. ries of some of its beneficiaries. Dahlia Anthony’s story moved us all to look for our tissues. Her family, i.e. Mother and three siblings immigrated to the USA in early 2000 as refugees from Rwanda. Like many other families displaced by war, they had lost everything and everyone in the country which they had once called ‘home’. Among those that they lost, was their father, so when they came to the US, it was up to their mother to support the family. Through all their difficulties, they found support in the Alliance. The Alliance not only motivated the mother, but also all the four children to do really well at school. Now, Dahlia has graduated from UT, San Antonio with a degree in Business Management and now works as a Human Resources Manager with a Houston-based company. The son is in the American army and goes out of his regular duties to help support the transition of the army veterans into civil life. One more sister works with the SOS International and the youngest
Alliance staff member and her guest one is in school. Tabisa Thiong’s was presented as the success story for the evening. Tabisa fled from the conflicts in Sudan, lived over 10 years in refugee camps in Ethiopia before finally arriving to Houston. In the US she had many obstacles to face. Tabisa had arrived with five children age 14 and under and she spoke very little English. She
took the English Program at the Alliance whilst her case managers helped her to navigate the health system and obtain social services for her two children with disabilities. Through the Individualized Savings Account Office (IDA) she has now become eligible for owning her own home. A great achievement indeed. This family can now look forward to a different

Dahlia Anthony, one of the scholarship award winners with her family future from the one they have experienced so far. Houstonians can be proud of the Alliance and the good work it does for the immigrants who are on the margins of society. However, the life force of the Alliance is no doubt its Executive Director, Yani Rose Keo. Everybody who I spoke to through the evening, spoke about her with a deep sense of respect
as well as fondness. Narayan, my table companion, said about her, “nothing is impossible for Yani”; one could see her playing the role of hostess with so much of love and dedication for her work. All the best Yani and always rest assured that Houstonians are here to support you in all your endeavors.

Saturday night was party time at FrankN-Steins Sports Bar and Grill at Hwy 6 S for all the cricket players and their family members as part of the three day HPL tournament which was held from May 25th to 27th at the grounds at Katy Hockley Road in Houston. Houston has great things happening here especially with the onset of the summer vacation starting off with the Memorial Day Long Weekend. Six city-based cricket teams played their HPL matches across three days of the weekend: Dallas, Austin, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and of course Houston. None of these cricket players are professional players but they have converted their passion and love for this game and came down to Houston to play it professionally. Playing cricket is their weekend activity and upholding this traditional sport for so many of the Diaspora coming from countries that were colonies of the British Empire not so long ago. Hence it was no surprise to find Brian Walters the regional representative of the USACA (USA Cricket Association) who hails from Jamaica, team members from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc. The USACA has hired Australian Darren Beazley as CEO with the objective of making Cricket as one of the popular games in the USA. All the office bearers who I had the opportunity of talking to, like the current tournament organizer, Mustafa Hemani, Brian Walters the regional representative of USACA as well as Mr. Nanda Kumar who is the official spokesperson of the local Houston Cricket League, they all see a great future for cricket in the USA. They see a great opportunity for this game as a family game, wherein you have teams of male adults, you have children’s cricket and then you also have women’s cricket. The opportunity is in making this a neighborhood sport where families congregate in their neighborhood vacant lots and just play and practice. The only way to become better at this game is to play it more

and more. Mr. Nanda Kumar compares it to Soccer in the USA and says that ten years ago, Soccer was not as popular as it is today, however, families through group play made it so popular that today it has become a big game in the USA. Since there is so much common conceptually between the game of Baseball, Softball and Cricket, it is easy to introduce it to children who take to this game joyfully. In fact they enjoy playing cricket much more to the other two games because of the scope of engagement that Cricket allows for. USACA is a central body set up autonomously and it has divided the US into eight regions. Currently what is happening in Houston is under the Central West Region. Since this is all played by lovers of the game who are non-professionals,

this is a great way for their families to bond and vacation together as well. Mustafa Hemani, the event manager who has taken on this responsibility voluntarily, wanted to give a more fun-filled party experience to all the team members and guests, hit upon this idea of organizing the Saturday evening event at Frank-N-Stein Sports Bar and Grill. There was DJ, live band, quiz with gifts, mementos and good food and drinks, so everybody could have a great time. In fact the whole environment was one of camaraderie and building bridges between different communities. Kudos to Brian Walters and Mustafa for the extra miles that they have been travelling to make this a memorable event. Next year they have bigger plans and we wish them luck.

PIA plane threat case: UK court rejects bail of two accused Taxi driver Tayyab Subhani, 30, and restaurant worker Mohammed Safdar, 41, both from Nelson, Lancashire, are charged with endangering a PIA passenger jet PK 709 from Lahore to Manchester which was diverted with an RAF fighter escort to the Stansted Airpot, Essex, on Friday. The news of the plane being escorted by an RAF fighter jet caused global scare and initially it was thought that the incident could be terrorism related. The count against the two men, read out in the court before the magistrate Sarah-Jane Davies, alleged that the defendants made false threats that the "crew and passengers would be killed and the aircraft blown up before landing which was false, misleading or deceptive". The defendants, who are of Pakistani heritage and were both born in Burnley, Lancashire, spoke only to confirm their names and addresses but their lawyers said they would deny the charge. The two friends were travelling home after attending Safdar's mother's funeral, the court heard. The court also heard that the PIA airplane was carrying 308 passengers and wad due to land at the Manchester airport at 2pm. It landed at the Stansted Airport 20 minutes later. After hearing the case, the magistrate Sarah-Jane Davies refused the defendants bail and ordered that Safdar, a married father-of-three, and Subhani should appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on August 5 for a plea and case management hearing. Endangering an aircraft carries a maximum sentence of life imprison-
ment. Their case will be dealt under the offences under the Aviation Security Act 1982 and the Aviation and Maritime Security Act 1990. Part 1 of the 1982 Act contains broad offences dealing with hijacking, destruction or endangerment of an aircraft and these offences are supplemented by Section 1 of the 1990 Act. The duo will remain in custody till the August hearing but their lawyers can apply for the bail at the Crown Court. Several eye-witnesses told that the two men abused other passengers, fought with them and repeatedly threatened to blow the airplane. They argued with anyone who tried to calm them down and issued threats nonstop. The PIA pilot called for emergency help when he was told by the crew that the two were trying to enter into the cockpit of the plane. Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Fakhar Iqbal was sitting right behind the two men. Iqbal was returning from Pakistan after campaigning for his brother Tariq Iqbal Chaudhary who beat Tehmina Daultana in a Multan constituency. He told The News that the two men openly abused other passengers and everyone was scared. It was Iqbal who called on the crew to intervene and ask the two men to behave but they would have none of it. Iqbal said: “I have not seen anything like this. I was interviewed by the police for two hours. I was scared at one stage that these two men may blow up the plane as they looked really hostile.”

IPL spot-fixing:
Chennai hotelier under scanner Victor. They found Victor had made over 100 calls to Kitty from a number registered in the name of Aggarwal's wife. During interrogation, Kitty reportedly revealed that Aggarwal was Victor. Besides Vindoo and Meiyappan, Aggarwal is also suspected to have been in touch with bookie Chandresh Jain alias Jupiter. The Mumbai Crime Branch Monday said Aggarwal had been summoned for questioning. But Aggarwal's lawyer, Abudu Kumar Rajaratnam, said he had been picked him up at 7.30 am. "Police are not confirming this, leading to fear and confusion in the family. His wife has sent a telegram to the DGP," Rajaratnam said. Crime Branch officials denied that Aggarwal had been picked up or had surrendered.
Investigations into the spot-fixing racket have put a Chennai-based hotelier under the scanner. Vikram Aggarwal, allegedly known as Victor in betting circles, is said to have been an active punter who placed bets of up to Rs 1 crore. Aggarwal, whose company V V T Hotels is a partner in two luxury hotels — Radisson Blu and Fortune Select Palms in Chennai — is suspected to have introduced Chennai Super Kings CEO Gurunath Meiyappan to actor Vindoo Dara Singh. They are reported to have named Victor during interrogation. Sources said police, while busting a betting ring in Chennai soon after the arrest of the three Rajasthan Royals players, found that one of the main bookies, Uttam C Jain alias Kitty, was in constant touch with one

He is currently being kept in a separate cell for security reasons. The last time when he was in Yerawada, Dutt was given the work of knitting cane chairs. For this, he was paid Rs 12.50 per day meant for an unskilled worker in jail. The Supreme Court had on March 21 this year upheld Dutt's conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. However, the apex court had reduced to five years the six-year jail term awarded by TADA court. The actor was convicted by the TADA court for illegally possessing a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle, a part of the consignment of weapons and explosives brought to India for the coordinated serial blasts that killed 257 people and injured over 700 in March 1993.

Mahatma Gandhi debuts in China The first Chinese version of a book on Mahatma Gandhi's thoughts was launched here today, marking the debut of Gandhian philosophy in a country intensely dominated by the ideology of 'Chairman' Mao Zedong. 'Gandhi's Outstanding Leadership', written by former Indian diplomat-turned-Gandhian Pascal Alan Nazareth, was released at the Peking University's Centre for India Studies in the presence of Indian Ambassador to China S Jaishankar. Prof Shang Quanyu, a history professor with the South China Normal University, translated the book into Madarin. He described the book as a "trail blazer". Indian officials said in many ways the

I am a Gambler: CSK CEO
Gurunath Meiyappan makes startling confession to cops, says he is a compulsive gambler who bet and won crores on IPL matches all season and shared vital information on CSK's team composition, batting and bowling orders with his pal, Vindu Dara Singh. Clearly, all the team secrets he was letting out, helped bookies in their spot fixing racket. Yet, the BCCI chief's son-in-law insists he is no fixer I admit I am a gambler. I have bet crores, and have won and lost crores too on IPL matches all summer. Vindu (Dara Singh) also forced me to pass on inside information on team compositions to him. But I am no fixer,` Gurunath Meiyappan alias 'Guru', the disgraced team principal of the Chennai Super Kings told a Mumbai court yesterday. The CSK team boss was subjected to detailed grilling on Sat-
urday. The 37-year-old son-in-law of BCCI chief N Srinivasan was grilled by top crime branch officers before being produced in court and finally being remanded to custody till May 29. Won all bets on CSK: Guru A police officer, on condition of anonymity, said, `Guru told the police and the court that he had won almost all bets he placed on his own team this year. We are trying to find out if he had a hand in Chennai Super Kings losing to bottom-ranked Pune Warriors, as it is unlikely that such a strong team could lose so easily to Pune.` Guru also claimed he had won 80 per cent of all the bets he has placed on IPL matches over the years. Speaking to journos a senior police official claimed that Guru and Vindu were in constant touch with each other during many of the IPL matches, especially during the
strategic time outs. The IPC section of harbouring offenders, already applied on Vindu, has now been slapped on Guru as well. Heated arguments in court Charged under various sections of forgery under the Indian Penal Code, along with cheating and even criminal conspiracy, Sections 4 and 5 of the Gambling Act and Section 66A of the Information Technology Act, several police guards escorted Guru to the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court at Esplanade on Saturday afternoon, to secure his remand. Appearing on Guru's behalf, advocate Aabad Ponda argued that betting was a bailable offence. `He has a wife, kids and family. There is no point in arresting him. He is not going to run away,` Ponda told the court. As the arguments dragged on for over an hour, it looked as though the wily school dropout
might slip through police fingers. But the tide turned when Metropolitan Magistrate MP Paaghe was shown transcripts of Guru's conversations with Vindu Dara Singh. The court promptly remanded him to police custody till May 29. Vindu and Guru face to face Meanwhile co-accused Vindu and Guru were brought face to face. A police officer said, `Guru
used to pass on information to Vindu, who would place bets on his behalf. Everything from details of fielding, who will open the bowling, changes in the lineup that must have been discussed during team meetings by captain MS Dhoni, were all passed on to Vindu.` Guru has now told the police that Vindu used him and the tips he supplied, for his own gain.

Pakistan lesbian couple inks UK's first gay Muslim marriage Two former students from Pakistan have defied death threats to solemnise their lesbian marriage in UK's first Muslim gay civil partnership. Rehana Kausar, 34, and Sobia Kamar, 29, took their vows at a registry office in Leeds and instantly applied for political asylum in the UK, according to local media reports. "This country allows us rights and it's a very personal decision that we have taken. It's no one's business as to what we do with our personal lives," Kausar, originally from Lahore, told the Birmingham-based
'Sunday Mercury' newspaper. "The problem with Pakistan is that everyone believes he is in charge of other people lives and can best decide about the morals of others but that's not the right approach. We are in this state because of our clergy, who have hijacked our society, which was once tolerant and respected individuals' freedoms," she added. Kamar, originally from Mirpur in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, described her partner as her "soul mate". Relatives of the couple said the women
had received death threats both in the UK and from their native Pakistan, where homosexuality is still deemed illegal under Pakistani law. During the ceremony earlier this month, the couple dressed in white bridal wear reportedly told the registrar that they had met three years ago while studying business and health care management at Birmingham, having travelled to the country on student visas, and had been living together in South Yorkshire for about a year. The civil ceremony took place in the

presence of their solicitors and two Pakistani friends. "The couple did not have an Islamic marriage ceremony, known as a nikah, as they could not find an imam to conduct what would have been a controversial ceremony. They have been very brave throughout as our religion does not condone homosexuality. The couple have had their lives threatened both here and in Pakistan and there is no way they could ever return there," a relative of one of the women told the newspaper.

How your iPad tablet could mess with a good night’s sleep W a n t to g e t a g o o d n ig h t’s sleep? Then best switch off that iPad well before y o u tu r n in Night-time exposure to LED rays like those illuminating tablets and smartphones are ‘typically more disruptive’ to our body clocks than standard electric light, research suggests. ‘Technology has effectively decoupled us from the natural 24-hour day to which our bodies evolved, driving us to go to bed later,’ said Prof Charles Czeisler, of Harvard Medical School. ‘And we use caffeine in the morning to rise as early as we ever did, putting the squeeze on sleep.’ As a result of modern technology Prof Czeisler said ‘many people are still checking email, doing homework or watching TV at midnight, with
hardly a clue that it is the middle of the solar night’. He is calling for research to help develop ‘behavioural and technical’ ways of counteracting the ill effects of artificial light on sleeping patterns. He claims the decline in the number of hours slept per night brings with it a greater risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression and stroke in adults and concentration problems in children. Between 1950 and 2000, the average person in Britain increased their use of artificial light sources by four times, with a parallel rise in sleep deficiency, Prof Czeisler wrote in the journal Nature. In a study, 30 per cent of all working adults in the US reported getting less than six hours sleep a night on average. Fifty years ago, less than three per cent of the population slept so little.

Yahoo Throws in 1 TB of Free Storage With Flickr Revamp Yahoo has announced the overhaul of Flickr, its photo and video sharing site, after purchasing social microblogging website Tumblr. The new Flickr has "a beautiful, completely reimagined experience that puts photos front and center," Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer wrote in a blog post that is reminiscent of what her Facebook counterpart, Mark Zuckerberg, said when announcing his company's overhaul of NewsFeed in March. Flickr's new user interface is "built around a new photostream that gives you a
vivid and endlessly scrolling gallery," Mayer said. "It's easy to see what your friends are
posting and what they're saying about your photos." Flickr has also increased the amount of free storage
space for users to 1 TB and overhauled its Android app. Google recently updated Google+ along similar lines. "There are certain kinds of language and terminology that's the culture of technology, and you hear the same phrases being used," Greg Sterling, a senior analyst at Opus Research, told TechNewsWorld when asked about the similarities between Facebook's and Flickr's announcements. "There's a similar mindset of thinking among tech companies."

Dilip Kumar Dilip Kumar is considered to be one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema. Starting his career in 1944, he has starred in some of the biggest commercially successful films from the late 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1980s. His performances have been regarded as the epitome of emoting in Indian Cinema. He was the first actor to receive a Filmfare Best Actor Award and holds the record for most number of Filmfare Awards won for that category. Though he has done all kinds of films - he balanced a wide variety of roles such as the intense Andaz (1949) with the swashbuckling Aan (1952), the dramatic Devdas (1955) with the comical Azaad (1955) and the historical romance Mughal E Azam (1960) with the social Ganga Jamuna (1961). In the 1970s roles dried up for Kumar and after 1976 he left films for a five year break. In 1981 he returned with a character role in the blockbuster film Kranti and continued his career playing central character roles in hits such as Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). He has retired from the Indian Film Industry in 1998. He was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar Pakistan in a Pashtun family of twelve children. His father Ghulam Sarwar was a fruit merchant and owned large orchards in Peshawar and Devlali in Maharashtra near Mumbai. The family relocated to Mumbai in 1930s and in the early 1940s Yusuf Khan moved to Pune and started off with his canteen business and supplying dry fruits. There he was spotted by a leading actress of those years Devika Rani who was also the wife of the founder of Bombay Talkies Himanshu Rai and helped his entry into the Bollywood film industry. She also gave him the screen name of Dilip Kumar. His first film Jwar Bhata, was released in 1944 which went unnoticed. In 1947 he

Dilip Kumar (born 11 December 1922, as Muhammad Yousuf Khan) is an Indian film actor. He debuted as an actor in the movie Jwar Bhata (1944), produced by Bombay Talkies. He is known as Tragedy King and was described as "the ultimate method actor" by Satyajit Ray. In a blog post, Amitabh Bachchan has described Dilip Kumar as the greatest actor ever. Dilip Kumar's career has spanned six decades and over 60 films. Critics acclaimed him among one of the greatest actors in the history of Hindi cinema. Dilip Kumar is the first actor to receive a Filmfare Best Actor Award (1954) and shares the record for the most number of Filmfare awards won for that category with Shahrukh Khan title roles. Despite the film success he did not produce any film after this. Dilip had a narrow brush with international fame in 1962 when British director David Lean offered him the role of Sherif Ali in his 1962 blockbuster, Lawrence of Arabia. However Kumar declined the part. The role eventually went to Omar Sharif the Egyptian actor. After a brief period of box office flops in the mid 1960s,
shot to prominence with the film Jugnu which was his first major hit. In 1949, he co-starred with Raj Kapoor in the romantic melodrama film Andaz, which went to become a huge success and made him a star. Throughout the 1950s he was one of the biggest stars of Bollywood along with Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. He became known for playing tragic roles in popular films such as Deedar (1951), Amar (1954), Devdas (1955) and Madhumati (1958) which earned him the title of "Tragedy King". He was also successful in playing lighthearted roles such as playing a swashbuckling peasant in Aan (1952) and a comic role in Azaad (1955). In 1960 he starred in the historical film Mughal-e-Azam which is as of 2008, the second highest grossing film in Hindi film history inflation adjusted in which he played the role of the Mughal crown-prince Jehangir the son of Akbar. In 1961 he produced and starred in the hit Ganga Jamuna in which he and his Real Life brother Nasir Khan played the
he bounced back when he played a dual role of twins separated at birth in the film Ram Aur Shyam (1967) which was one of the biggest box office hits of the year. The success of Ram Aur Shyam spawned a number of remakes and imitators. In the 1970s Kumar acted in fewer films as newer actors such as Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan had began to take the spotlight. Many of Kumar's films failed at the box office during this period and after the release of his 1976 film Bairaag in which he played triple roles, he took a five year break from acting. He made a comeback in 1981 with the
multi-starrer Kranti which was the biggest hit of the year. He went onto play character roles as an elderly family patriarch or a police officer in a string of box office hits including Shakti (1982) in which he starred alongside the reigining superstar of the time Amitabh Bachchan , Vidhaata (1982), Mashaal (1984) and Karma (1986). In his last major successful film, Saudagar (1991) he appeared alongside another legendary actor Raaj Kumar after three decades since they last appeared together in Paigham (1959). In 1992 he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1996 he was attached to make his directorial debut with a film titled Kalinga but the film was shelved. In 1998 he made his last film appearance to date in the box office flop Qila where in a rare form he played a villainous role. He has since retired from the film industry although he has continued to receive film offers in recent years but the films have either been shelved due to his indifferent health or because he refused them. Dilip Kumar's younger brother Nasir Khan was also an actor and appeared opposite him in Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Bairaag (1976) as well as some other films in the late 1940s and 1950s. His career was not as successful however. He died in 1974. Nasir Khan's son Ayub Khan is also currently an actor in the industry. Nasir Khan's wife was 1950s actress Begum Para who recently made a comeback to films after 50 years in the film Saawariya in 2007. Dilip Kumar married actress and "beauty queen" Saira Banu in 1966 when he was aged 44 and she was 22. At the time, gossip columnists predicted doom for the high-profile couple, but the union has been one of the longest lasting marriages in Bollywood.

AMANDA BYNES ACCUSES NYPD OFFICER OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Following Thursday's drug-related arrest, Amanda Bynes took to Twitter to not only defend herself, but to denigrate New York's finest. First, Bynes attempted to deny reports that she was arrested for smoking weed and dropping a bong out of her 36-story window by tweeting, "I only smoke tobacco I don't drink or do drugs. I've never had a bong in my life!" But on Saturday morning, Bynes turned the blame on the NYPD. Things started benignly enough, as Bynes begged fans, "Don't believe the reports about me being arrested. It's all lies." But she didn't stop there. "I was sexually harassed by one of the cops two nights ago which is who then arrested me," Bynes tweeted. "He slapped my vagina." Bold words. We're wont to give those who profess to be victims of sexual assault the benefit of the doubt, but these are serious accusations Bynes is making against the NYPD. If she was indeed harassed by her arresting officer, she should certainly press charges. But we can't help but wonder, why were the police in her apartment in the first place? Here is Bynes's tweet in full: Don't believe the reports about me being arrested. It's all lies. I was sexually harassed by one of the cops two nights ago which is who then arrested me. He lied and said I threw a bong out the window when I opened the window for fresh air. Hilarious. He slapped my vagina. Sexual harassment. Big deal. I then called the cops on him. He handcuffed me, which I resisted, quite unlike any of the reports stated. Then I was sent to a mental hospital. Offensive. I kept asking for my lawyer but they wouldn't let me. The cops were creepy. The cop sexually harassed me, they found no pot on me or bong outside my window. That's why the judge let me go. Don't believe any reports.

Movie review: Ishkq in Paris
GOSSIP
CITY360
Cast: Preity Zinta, Rhehan Malliek, Isabel Adjani Director: Prem Raj Plot: Ishkq in Paris is about Ishkq (Preity Zinta) and Akash Kapoor (Rhehan Malliek), two individuals who are afraid of ‘marriage’ and try to keep away from commitments. They meet in a train to Paris as strangers and decide to spend a night together without sharing personal details and also decide that they would never meet again after this night. And they go around the beautiful city of love, dancing, drinking and having fun! By the end of the night, they share their personal lives and Akash goes back. He visits Paris again for his friend’s wedding and the story starts here. The background part of the movie surrounds
Preity’s mother’s tragic separation from her husband and how she suffers being alone though she’s a famous French actress. The end is about how Akash changes Ishkq’s life by making her realise that acceptance of other people in her life will help her get over the tragic memories of her mom and dad. Performance: Preity Zinta’s comeback to the industry with this movie is sort of average. We’ve seen her exceptional acting skills before which was nowhere to found in this movie. The newcomer (Rhehan Malliek) also did a pretty average job. His dialogues were very cheesy but the movie was meant to be like that, you know, like the ‘cute romantic love story’.

I finally discovered Ranbir: Deepika
MAY 31, 2013
Karan Johar celebrates his birthday with Aamir Khan!
Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar turned 41 on May 25th as he celebrated his birthday with a host of Bollywood celebs. Karan Johar’s best buddy Shahrukh Khan was busy shooting for the Chennai Express as Karan Johar was seen getting close to Aamir Khan. Others who were spotted were Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The party went all night and got over at 7 am when Aamir Khan left the party. The party was hosted by Aarti Shetty, daughter of Manmohan Shetty.

Dressed in a bright orange jumpsuit, the matter-of-factness in her voice is undeniable. Deepika Padukone comes across as someone who has figured out everything. Thrilled about Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, her second release of the year after Race 2, the 27-year-old says she listens to her heart more often than not. Excerpts of the interview: How is Ranbir Kapoor as a co-star? I think this is our first film together because Bachna Ae Haseeno didn't do justice to us as an onscreen couple. Besides, we were dating then so the film just came and went. During the shooting of our upcoming film, I finally discovered Ranbir as a very supportive co-star. He's very patient and won't be annoyed even if I'm taking more time to get the shot right. A lot of this has to do with our comfort level, our history and the understanding we share.
And what equation do you share with him off the sets? We both started off as actors in 2007 so this journey from being strangers to being friends is what I cherish today. I take a lot of pride in his success. It's great to see his films do well and career graph soar. A s a n a c tre s s , d o y o u ta k e c r itic is m s e r io u s ly ? Criticism can help you grow as it shows what you lack although it can't tell you how to overcome your shortcomings. You'll have to do that on your own. Also, sometimes the critique can vary from person to person so I have to decide whether to let that negativity affect me or not. Are you better equipped now to deal with being always in the lim e lig h t? I'd be lying if I told you that it doesn't bother me at all. Having said that, I've grown wiser with time. Earlier, if I scored a 10 reacting to rumours on a scale of 1-10, today I
score like a 2 or 3. In any case, all the speculations are temporary because when your film releases, what matters is it has to be great. Y o u e v e n a d o p te d a v illa g e in M a h a ra s h tra ? Yes, it's still my responsibility and I make sure I contribute funds to ensure electricity in Ambegaon. The idea is to educate kids and spread light in interiors of our country. Ironically, my name along with my family members' - father (Prakash), mom (Ujwala) and sister (Anisha) means light too! So how does your family react to your work? They watch all my films. Among my parents, my mom is more objective about my work. She'll always point out something to improve on. As far as the choice of films is concerned, I'm responsible for my decisions and nobody else. Courtesy: Mid-Day.com

Preity Zinta is shaken and upset with IPL Scandals Preity Zinta who is getting ready for the release of her much-anticipated debut as a producer in Ishkq In Paris, is pretty shaken by the latest spot-fixing scandals to hit the cricket IPL business. Taking a deep breath she says, `Look, I'd still like to give the accused the benefit of the doubt. But if the allegations are true then it's really really sad for the country, for the game and for the IPL. So much faith is placed on these players. I don't think they've any business betraying us like this. If the allegations are true then let me tell you the BCCI is going to take very stern against these players. At the same time we can't write off the game just because there might be some rotten eggs in the basket. ` Preity admits there have been times when she has felt out of place in the IPL. `I am not going to deny there are dark moment when I feel, 'What the hell am I doing here?' But on the whole the IPL experience has been very fulfilling and I've never been seriously tempted to question my place in it. I only wish people who are part of the IPL would take their responsibilities seriously. Finally it's not the players but the team owner who has to face the uncomfortable questions on the raison d'etre of the IPL. ` And Preity by the grace of the cricketing Gods, has learnt to take the criticism on her chin. `These last three years have made me stronger. I feel I am far more experienced now as a humanbeing than I was three

The body requires plenty of liquids to increase its moisture levels, so make sure you drink a lot of fluids Rest and relaxation is important. So, forget worrying for once and just curl up in bed. Get as much rest as you possibly can. But if you have to go to work, make sure you have an early night. Take a teaspoon of honey and the juice of half a lemon, a natural source of Vitamin C. Dissolve it in warm water and drink. Opt for herbal leaf tea or green tea as an alternative to normal tea. Chicken soup is believed to be a good food for colds If you are suffering from a blocked nose, prop yourself up in bed with pillows to help ease your breathing at night. Install a humidifier in your bedroom to regulate the moisture. This will help reduce mucous drainage and promote nasal relief while sleeping.
It's okay to be the first one out of the gate. It can be a bit intimidating, but to the shy people in the room, it's refreshing to have someone like you, someone confident enough to take the plunge. Activity and avidity are key themes on Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday and Thursday are defined by roadblocks. You don't mind an obstacle, though. It gives you a chance to show what you're made of. Friday and Saturday, communication is crucial -computers, telephones, perhaps even pigeon carriers play a role. Sunday is best spent in a hammock.
Cancer 6/22 - 7/22
A new project is not always the best way to solve an old problem. It may just create more work. And the chemistry in your workplace is off on Monday and Tuesday, further complicating everything. Cool your heels and take a back seat this week. Wednesday and Thursday are weird and cloudy, and Friday finds you strangely torn between two friends, both of whom adore you and both of whom you want to be loyal to. All of this oddness adds up to a weekend in which you may not feel like doing anything more than sticking around the house and chilling out. You're your own best company.

Horoscope Taurus 4/20 - 5/20
You don't have to accept the first offer that comes your way -- be it job-related, love-related or whatever. You have time to shop around. You can be discerning. On Tuesday, as much as you may want to race ahead, pace yourself. Wednesday and Thursday are beautiful days, marked by luxury, happiness and amusement (to say nothing of romance). Friday will mostly be wasted time. Maybe someone will stand you up for lunch, or fail to return a phone call. It happens. On Sunday, tell someone how you feel -- how you really, really feel.
Leo
7/23 - 8/22 It doesn't really matter what you do at the start of the week -- you're going to have a good time regardless. Making fun out of anything is one of your talents, and the raw materials, such as new, interesting people, will be on hand. Wednesday and Thursday will be interesting but not in ways you like -- stubbornness and greediness are double-whammy themes. But Friday you'll get to go to a lecture (or get a lecture from a bespectacled friend) that taxes your brain in beautiful ways. Saturday is social, but Sunday is all blankets and pillows.
Scorpio 10/23 - 11/21
Your health is your top concern at the start of The world is a two-person show at the start of the week: You and you-know-who. Either the week -- or at least it should be. Eat well, you're bound together professionally or you're jog if you like jogging and swim if there's a bound together by love, but whatever the case pool around. Staying active will have an added is, you're inseparable, so you should make benefit -- it will give you an excuse not to get sure you're getting along. You have the power caught up in whatever conflicts are brewing in to make this truly great. The middle of the the social realm. However, no matter what you week is almost entirely about beauty -- you're do, Wednesday and Thursday will likely be around it, you see it in others, you appreciate it -- and the end of the week is about harmony, defined by opposition or discord. Take it with a companionship and kindness. You are virtuous grain of salt. Friday and Saturday, money will this week, or at least you aspire to be. Sunday figure strongly in your life, although good luck won't (so avoid taking risks with that cash). brings out your deepest emotions. Sunday will be intellectually rewarding.
Capricorn 12/22 - 1/19
As much as you'd like to charge into the week with the confidence of an ox, you're feeling much more like a worried sheep. You have some things on your mind. Is it family stuff? Career issues? Stability is a major preoccupation on Tuesday. Your mood doesn't lift until Wednesday, which is marked by romance, relaxation and maybe the presence of rambunctious children. Thursday is a stellar day. Friday and Saturday move at breakneck pace -- you won't have enough time to even formulate a complete thought. On Sunday, find a relaxing place to catch your breath. A patio? The beach?
Aquarius 1/20 - 2/18
Monday is a museum of amazements. You're well aware of how big and weird the world is, but seldom have you been able to see as much meaning in things as you do at the start of the week. By Wednesday, you're swimming in a swarm of discoveries, each one bright and small and exciting. Thursday is full of learning, but there's nothing academic about Friday. Romantic, creative Friday is all about sparks. On Saturday you get to show off your impressive communication abilities. The skills you need on Sunday are manual: A few things need fixing.
cheesecake, mango mousse, and mango phirnee as our desserts, and went up to corporate pastry chef Devender Bungla of Hyatt Regency, Delhi, for their exclusive recipes. Chef Bungla's is a 20-year-old hand in baking and frosting at the hotel, and fresh from creating the menu for a summer mango festival, he happily doles out the secret to baking a perfect Crumble among others.
Week starting from June 2
Gemini 5/21 - 6/21
If you don't take charge, who else will? You're surrounded by intelligent people, people who could do anything if they put their minds to it. But what they don't have is initiative, a leader, someone to inspire them to greatness. That's where you come in. No one's saying it's going to be easy -- Wednesday and Thursday are full of examples of what can go wrong with a project -- but you love a juicy challenge. On Friday, you're meeting a lot of people, and your current quandaries give you something to talk about. You're nothing if not social on Saturday, and Sunday is a day of real progress.
Virgo
8/23 - 9/22 If there's a pizza in your life Monday, don't dawdle when it's time to take your share -- or you might not get any at all. You don't like to pounce on things, but resources are limited and people are hungry. On Tuesday, there's tension between you and your coworkers, but by Wednesday, you've turned that on its head, thanks to the force of your personality. In the middle of the week, you're as compatible with others as peanut butter is with jelly. And when you join forces with someone on Thursday, you two can do anything. Friday and the weekend require you to be in constant communication with others.
Sagittarius 11/22 - 12/21
You haven't played on a playground in years. On Monday or Tuesday, if you pass one on your way somewhere, stop in for a second and go for a slide, a swing or a turn. The wide-eyed energy of childhood defines the week. Wednesday and Thursday your focus should be on small personal issues -- again, reminiscent of childhood -- but Friday and Saturday are full of big ideas. And busyness. On Sunday, make a fort with your couch cushions, crawl in with a magazine or some headphones and don't come out for anyone.
Pisces 2/19 - 3/20
Even holding a lantern out in front of you won't help you see better right now -- it'll illuminate the fog and make the glare brighter. If you can stand to sit in the dark on Monday and Tuesday, do it. Hey, maybe you'll get some good thinking done. Consider keeping the lights dim on Wednesday, too -- a candlelit dinner is exactly your speed. Flowers, poetry and clever stationery figure on Thursday, but Friday and Saturday are less floral and more frantic. Try not to become overwhelmed. And if you do feel overwhelmed, take solace in the knowledge that Sunday will be fun and regenerative.

Alamparai Fort: The ruins of Alamparai Fort are situated at Kadapakkam, about 50 km from Mahabalipuram. Cruising through ECR, you will have to cross Muttukadu before you hit the spot. Built in the late 17th century during the Mughal era, the Alamparai Fort also served as a bustling trading zone then. When the French were defeated by the British, the fort was captured and destroyed in 1760 AD. More recently, the structure was damaged in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. It's a picturesque spot, very placid and relaxing. Ranjankudi Fort: This is a 17th century fortress located about 17 km north of Perambalur. The fort was constructed by a feudatory of the Nawab of the Carnatic, and is the site of the great Battle of Valikonda between the British East India Company and Chanda Sahib in 1751. The fort contains a palace, residential buildings, underground chambers, mosque and a flag mast. Gingee Fort: The Gingee fort is one of Tamil Nadu's most respected historic spots, situated in Villupuram, as close as a drive to Puducherry. Usually dubbed the 'Troy of the East', the impregnable citadel began with the construction of a small fort by the Chola dynasty in the ninth century. Since then, it has passed from the hands of the Vijayanagara Empire to the French as well as the British. Gingee fort has an interesting array of sights within its boundaries, staring from the wide moats to the Kalyana mahal and the military gymnasium. A must for photography enthusiasts, Gingee fort holds a lot more than just a shadow of the past. Vellore Fort: The Vellore fort owes its origins to the Nayaks of Vijayanagara. Built somewhere around the 16th century, the fort is famous for having been the stronghold where Tipu Sultan's family was held hostage. Yet another interesting fact to note is that, what we refer to as Chennai and Tirupati today were dominions that came under the Nayaks of Vellore fort. One of the most impressive examples of a ground fort in the south, this one houses a temple, a church as well as a mosque. The temple within the fort is famous for its detailed and magnificent carvings.
