The Houston Public Library Card, Your “Smartest” Card By

Mayor A nnise Parker

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Houston Public Library joins with public libraries nationwide to make sure that everyone has the smartest card of all – a free library card. Houston Public Library cards will soon be sporting a new design that evokes the Library’s mission, “We link people to the world.” To sign up, visit the main library downtown or any one of our neighborhood libraries, go online at www.houstonlibrary. org or call 832-393-12313. I have MY link, do you have yours? If not, I encourage you to get a Houston Public Library Card today. I guarantee it will be the “smartest card” in your wallet.

This year I was able to announce expanded library service hours throughout the city. The extended hours restored Saturday service to 14 neighborhood libraries, providing those neighborhoods with convenient library on a Saturdays for the first time in three years. In addition, the Central Library returned to a seven day a week schedule. The library’s budget was increased $3.1 million and 109 new staffers were hired to cover the

Pilot Program at IAH Could Speed the Way for Arriving International Passengers The Houston Airport System (HAS) continues to work closely with the U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) Agency in finding ways to minimize the amount of time required for the processing of arriving international passengers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). This effort took a major step forward this week as Houston was chosen by CBP leadership to take part in a pilot program that’s designed to increase the level of service during key designated periods. “A big reason for the success of Houston’s economy is its strong presence in the global marketplace,” said Houston Mayor Annise Parker. “In order for this presence to be strengthened in the future, we have to move our airport guests through the arrivals process as efficiently as possible. This program could prove to be very beneficial in reaching that goal.”

Under the program, HAS would be allowed to participate in reimbursable fee agreements with the CBP agency, essentially agreeing to assist in the payment of overtime expenses, in exchange for greater agent presence during agreed upon times. IAH was one of only five facilities invited to move forward with the proposed CBP partnership, joining two other airport facilities and two land border agencies. Four of the five accepted parties are from Texas, signaling a strong willingness from the states’ elected leaders in moving forward. "Our successful trading relationship with Mexico has the potential to create even more jobs and opportunities for Texans and this move by the CBP is the first step towards achieving these goals," says Texas Senator John Cornyn. "I am pleased to announce that CBP is

moving forward with a number of public/ private partnerships to help support growth in cross-border trade and travel," says Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. "These authorities afford CBP greater flexibility to work together with our stakeholders to support growth in trade and travel." When evaluating the nation’s busiest airports for international traffic, George Bush Intercontinental Airport already operates with one of the most efficient Customs processing operations in the United States. But the search for even more effective procedures and measures is an ongoing focal point at IAH. Previously, this focus led IAH to establish itself as the first “Model Port” in the nation, allowing the airport to participate in a wide range of pilot programs designed to increase efficiency within the required steps for Customs processing. The Hous-

Whether you are researching a class project, needing access to valuable information to help with your job hunt or desire to lose yourself in the latest best seller, the Houston Public Library is the place to do it. They really are your link to the world!

ton Airport System has also taken aggressive steps in maximizing the potential that lies within approved expedited traveler programs such “Global Entry” and “One Stop.” “We will continue to explore ways to improve the arrivals process for passengers flying into Houston aboard international flights,” says Mario Diaz, City of Houston Aviation Director. “These passengers are incredibly important to Houston both economically and culturally. We want them to have a positive experience in our city from the moment their plane touches the runway and maximizing efficiency is a great start in creating that atmosphere.” The Houston Airport System has already been working closely with the CBP in establishing a bench line for the amount of time currently required to process arriving international passengers

The dance battle of the fathers of the couple to the drum beats evokedquite a few giggles ! Technically, the audio, the lighting, the visuals, stage management, change of scenes, change of costumes - all with a group of 80 talented dancers of all ages was extremely smooth. The lead dancers and choregra-

Twerking Miley brings back the 80’s You would think, given the seemingly unending conversation surrounding her VMA performance, Miley Cyrus would be fine to spend Labor Day weekend lying low. But you’d be wrong ... after all, like the lyrics to her recent hit suggest, she can’t stop — and she won’t stop. Check out the promo images for Bangerz here! She took little time to rest after Sunday night, getting right back to work making a cameo in Mike Will Made It’s “23” video, which came on the heels of releasing the second single off her Bangerz album, the intense ballad “Wrecking Ball.” So on Thursday, we got our first glimpse at promotional pics for Miley’s album, and while they’re nowhere near as talked about as her twerk-tastic Video Music Awards performance, they should be enough to keep the conversation going through the long weekend. Take, for example, one image, where Miley, clad in checkered leather pants and a cropped top, defiantly grabs her crotch. In another — which recalls the Bangerz album cover — she’s photographed with her back to the camera, a black dress barely covering her backside. There are, of course, more demure images too: Miley clutching a bouquet of flowers, Miley holding balloons and striking a confident pose, a pensive portrait where she momentarily shows us her soft side ... but based on early coverage, it seems (not surprisingly), that folks are focusing on the more salacious photos.

Deepika Deepika flies straight to Dubai from her Europe holiday to report to work on her next film 'Happy New Year' Over the last few days, Deepika Padukone had been spending some blissful moments under the Ibiza sun. But with work beckoning her, we heard that instead of returning home to India, Dippy flew straight to Dubai. The actress is part of Farah Khan's Happy New Year and the rest of the crew had already reached the desert emirate. Sources from Dubai say that the actress has also been spotted having animated conversations with her co-star Shah Rukh Khan as she apparently caught up with the latest

Bollywood gossip from him. An insider says, `She's had a long holiday and Deepika wanted to get back to work soon. Before going for her vacation, she completed some dress rehearsals. For 20 days, she was entirely cut off from all news from the industry. She had switched off her phone. But now she is raring to go at work and will also fly down to Goa straight from Dubai for her next project with Homi Adajania.` A unit hand says Dippy's first shot in Dubai will be filmed today and she is spending her spare time catching up with SRK. `Dippy sat SRK down and threw a volley of enquiries at him about the fate of their last film together and buzz from the filmi parties.` The actress' spokesperson confirmed our story.

Kareena refuses to Kiss and make love to Ajay Devgn!

In Prakash Jha's Satyagraha there is a very romantic erotic love song Ras se bhare tore nain saawariya. It's the song where Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan (yes, that's how she is billed for the first time in the credit titles of Satyagraha) get intimate.

The sequence required Kareena and Devgn to kiss and make love. However one hears Kareena, otherwise a very dedicated artiste on location in Bhopal, flatly refused do the intimate scene with her co-star. In Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara Kareena had dome some very intimate scenes with Devgn. But that came before her marriage. Says a source from the Satyagraha location, `Prakashji wanted at least a brush-on-the-lips since this was a very passionate moment between the lead pair. But now after marriage Kareena won't do any intimate scenes with any of her co-stars. Not even her own husband Saif. There is a certain code of conduct that Kareena must follow as a Pataudi bahu. Also, Kareena would do nothing to hurt her mother-in-law (Sharmila Tagore) whom she loves dearly. ` Sources from location say Prakash Jha had to make do with just the suggestion of a kiss and zero-proximity between the pair. Says one of Kareena's co-stars from Satyagraha, `Bebo has always been fearless before the camera. It isn't as if she hasn't done kissing scenes. She kissed Aamir in 3 Idiots, didn't she? But I think Heroine was her cut-off point as an actress. She did that very bold role with no holds barred. But I think she has made up her mind to avoid all intimacy on screen after marriage. I feel that that's a good thing. Prakashji had to fudge the kissing scene and we just see Bebo lying fully-clothed and alone in bed. That's it. I think her wishes as an individual must be respected. `

Ali Zafar lands new film with Ranveer Singh, Pariniti Chopra After two successful films Saathiya (remake) and Bunty Aur Babli, Shaad Ali directed ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’. The film was one of the biggest disasters of 2007 – a critical and commercial failure. Since then, the talented director has been missing from action. Now, a day before he ties the knot with costume designer Aarti Patkar, Yash Raj Films have announced their fourth film with Ali. The movie titled ‘Kill Dil’ will feature Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar and Parineeti Chopra. The film will go on floors in October 2013 and release mid-2014. I will help my cousins make a mark in the film industry:

Priyanka

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra made it big in Bollywood all by her self. She had no godfather in the industry, yet she went on to become one of the most sought after actresses. Priyanka however says, she will not leave her cousins alone and that she will take care of them, helping them make it big just like her, in the industry “It has been a great journey till now. When I came here into the film business there was no one to support or back me or help me. I was not from film industry, I was alone. Now that I am here I will protect them (other Chopra sisters),” Priyanka said. “I will make sure I am there for them. It warms my heart to see my cousins coming here,” she said. Not many know that besides parineeti Chopra, Priyanka has two other sisters Meera Chopra and Barbie Handa trying to make a mark in Bollywood. The actress never had formal training in acting. Yet she has done extremely well for herself in the industry, pocketing several awards including the National award. She goes on to say, she did try method acting, however got bored of it. “I am spontaneous. I haven’t learnt acting process so my style is different. If I do research I do it for 2-3

months and forget it,” she said. This year hasn’t been very great for Priyanka, hen it comes to her personal life, as she lost her biggest supporting factor, her dad, in June. However, a professional that she is, Priyanka resumed work immediately to everyone’s surprise. “My work has been my biggest supporting factor… I have been working since the age of 17. After three days of my father’s demise I had started working, as I feel if you work you forget things and that is better for me,” she said. Her yet to release flick Zanjeer opposite Ram Charan teja, will be her third Amitabh Bachchan remake after Don and Agneepath. “It is a big coincidence I did not plan it. I feel fortunate as I am a big fan of him. I can’t play Amitabh Bachchan on screen. So being part of his remakes is the closest that I can get to him,” she said.

Justin Beiber gets attacked in nightclub

Perhaps it’s time for Justin Bieber to take a break from the club scene. Almost a month after members of his entourage were probed by police for a nightclub assault, the Biebs got attacked when he was walking to the dance floor at Uniun Nightclub Friday night in Toronto, a partygoer confirmed to E! News. “He was in the VIP area with his friends for about an hour or so. He was really low-key, seemed to be enjoying himself. Then, he went down to the dance floor to chat with some pretty girls...when he made his way to the other side of the room he was attacked,” club goer Robbie Stilez told E! News. While Stilez said it was difficult to see exactly what was going on in the scramble, he did see Bieber’s friends holding him back, before the club’s bouncers picked up the “Boyfriend” singer’s attacker and kicked the guy out of the club. And it appeared the ousted clubgoer took something of Bieber’s with him—one of the singer’s gold chains. When the pop superstar left the club with his entourage following the scuffle, a member of his security team approached the club’s bouncers and told them “a guy in a red shirt stole one of Bieber’s gold chains he was wearing.” After trying to track down the supposed chain grabber to no avail, Bieber and his crew left.

High on the success of his latest film, John Abraham visited the MiD DAY office yesterday. John has managed to earn newfound respect for him as a producer who dares to choose a rather tricky subject for his movies. In a frank chat, the diehard Liverpool fan spills the beans on the challenges of making 'different' movies and getting hooked on to power games. What was the biggest obstacle you faced while producing Madras Cafe? The idea behind this film sprouted long before we (Shoojit Sircar and I) got down to work on Vicky Donor. Whenever we pitched the storyline to someone, the usual response was `Hmmm` or `Yeah, yeah` because there are certain stories we are afraid of touching thanks to their sensitive nature. It's like walking a dangerously thin line. However, once we decided to make the film, there was no looking back. Besides, the trade was expecting us to make Vicky Donor 2, not Madras Cafe. Did the protests against your film bother you? Though South is not really a huge market for Hindi films, the demonstrations were more baffling than disturbing. How can it hurt Tamilian sentiments when the film is so pro-Tamil? The answer is simple: people assumed even before watching the film and the political parties hijacked the events as usual. You're known to be politically aware but do you see yourself supporting a political party? I don't think it'd be right to influence public opinion. The reason why I'm politically aware is the whole power game is intriguing. In fact, JFK, Syriana, Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down are the kind of films which I love watching. It's no coincidence that all of them have a strong political backdrop. They are also the reason why I thought it's high time a film like Madras Cafe got

made. Can we expect more off-thebeaten-track films from you in the future? As a producer, yes. Having said that, I don't wish to eat my own words tomorrow if I happen to produce a masala film. Moreover, producers like Firoz Nadiadwala are more wellequipped than I am to produce a massy film. My trick is to experiment with a sensible form of cinema. It doesn't necessarily have to be artsy. We can always take the commercial angle into consideration. As an actor, I enjoy working in slapstick comedies. It's fun. I can't be condescending towards a Housefull or a Welcome Back just because I made a Vicky Donor or a Madras Cafe. There's

more than enough space for all genres of cinema and different audience caters different films. Are you in a relatively comfortable space vis-a-vis the industry today? As an actor-producer, the idea is to be accepted by everyone from the trade to the critics to general public but it doesn't work that way. When you least expect is usually when you get more accepted. I'm not on a mission to change the face of Bollywood but at the same time, I think supporting content-based films and going back to the basics is important. All films don't have to be big. If the product is good enough, it will eventually find its audience. What equation do you share with Shoojit Sircar? We connect more in terms

of co-producers than as actor and director. We both share similar ideas when it comes to movies on topics that are unconventional. He appreciated my work in No Smoking, Water and Kabul Express. Of course none of these films were a commercial success but it's nice to have someone who knows you very well and shares the same taste in filmmaking. We're collaborating on a number of upcoming projects. We complement each other except when we're on a football field. He can run for the whole 90 minutes whereas I can't. (Laughs) There were reports of you planning something in the football space as well. Yes, Shoojit and I are keen on a football-based script. It's in the writing stage and we're moving in that direction. I'm also teaming up with Baichung Bhutia to build a football academy in Sikkim which got delayed because of the earthquake. What role does your middle class upbringing play in the person that you are today? I come from a family that was far removed from opulence. My mother still travels in a BEST bus. Even I take a rickshaw every now and then. The advantage of a middle class upbringing is you value money and save for the future. And it's not about money as much as it's about everyday values. My first salary was Rs 11,800 and I still maintain that account in Bank of Maharastra. It helps to stay rooted in this industry. Will direction be the next step for you? It's inevitable. What's little known about me is I produce a lot of ad films. For instance, the recent Nikon ad featuring Priyanka Chopra was produced by me. So if at all I decide to take a plunge into direction, I'll first direct an ad film. We'll see what happens next (smiles).

Ranbir

Could Anushka have gone under the knife, as suggested by her recent strikingly different photographs? While it's no secret that airbrushing and extreme makeup can make someone look drastically different but in Anushka Sharma's case, it seems to be a little more than just a few casual touch-ups here and there. From recent pictures of the model-turned-actress, with her strategically cut fringe and her face plastered in heavy make-up, Anushka does not seem to be the same lady we saw making her debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan not many years ago. Before and After The grapevine has been buzzing with rumours about the actress having gone under the scalpel. Her suddenly fuller lips have caught everyone's eye, for more wrong than right reasons. A birdie chirps, `Her lips looked so thin in Jab Tak Hai Jaan and suddenly they seem to have amplified in size. Even ender the garb of a drastic haircut, it's difficult to miss the greatly altered features on her face. Her recent photoshoot for a women's magazine bears testimony to that.` Anushka's recent print ad with Virat Kohli for a hair care brand also set a lot of tongues tattling. `She looks like an all-new person,` adds an industry insider. On the subject of allegedly undergoing a cosmetic surgery recently, Anushka was reported telling a magazine, `This is a highly personal question. I don't believe in these things and I have always said that I don't need to.` The actress' spokesperson vehemently denies the allegations and states, `Anushka has never done any cosmetic surgery. She has been busy filming for PK and Bombay Velvet.`

is all set to propose Katrina Kaif!

Looks like it's time to bring out the champagne. The country's most eligible bachelor Ranbir Kapoor is apparently preparing to propose to his girlfriend Katrina Kaif on his birthday Ladies eat your heart out. Come September 28, Ranbir Kapoor might just let go of his single status. The grapevine is buzzing with rumours of the star planning to get down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend Katrina Kaif. The signs have been out there for a while for everyone to see. Apart from being spotted getting cosy with Kat on their overseas vacation recently, RK also

took his girl out shopping a few days ago for some expensive baubles. But instead of a diamond ring, it apparently was just a pair of exquisite earrings. Says a source, `A lot of hearts are set to break on Ranbir's birthday. But looks like the man has made up his mind. ` Recently, there was buzz that Ranbir's parents were not entirely happy with their son's choice of girlfriend. But looks like all's well on that end too because of what we know of Ranbir, he is too good a boy to go against his parents' wishes. Katrina's spokesperson rubbishes the buzz and states, `This is not possible because on Ranbir's birthday, he is going to be promoting his film Besharam and so he will be travelling. `

Get off the couch and master the to get fit Get that posterior up from your throne (read: the couch). Yes we know you can’t remember the last time you went out for a run and the tennis you play is all in your dreams. Zumba could well be the perfect remedy. How so? Get dressed in the wackiest and most colourful clothes on the planet. No one will laugh. It makes you feel young and want to do fun things. Go on a shopping spree to buy the official Zumbawear (yes, there are such clothes!). >> The toughest part could well be walking into the reception and signing up for a class. That’s when you think of all those fun hikes you have been missing, or

the times when girls gave you the brushoff because you didn’t have the energy to dance. Once you cross the line and walk into the class though, it is most likely that you will see 30 more happy faces who have as little idea as you about what to do next. No six-pack guy flexing his muscles and making you feel inferior. No size zero women around either. >> Right. Now that you are in, get down and groove! All the music being played in class is usually chartbusters and the top 20 singles of the month. The music is international and could combine salsa, meringue, tango, flamenco, samba and even bhangra.

>> Yes, we did say that learning Zumba does not mean you need to hit the gym first. But here’s one golden rule: always start the class with a warm up session. Never miss that. You don’t want to end up feeling sore next morning, do you? >> Here you go then. Let the music begin. Watch the instructor keenly. He or she will probably start with a meringue from the Dominican Republic, move to the sexy Cumbia stuff from Colombia and so on. The trick is to start by looking carefully at how the instructor’s feet are moving. Once you feel a little confident, bend down to the hips and follow with the hands. Every time you want to give up, tell yourself Shakira has admitted she got her awesome figure by doing the Zumba! >> Every Zumba class/session will have some high intensity songs like a reggaeton and a samba followed by low intensity songs like a salsa and a flamenco. Pump

it up during the high- intensity ones and catch your breath during the low-intensity ones. You will end up getting the most effective workout, burning anywhere between 500-800 calories during a single class. >> In an hour, you have danced to the tunes of a dozen countries, sweated off last night’s red velvet cake, felt your sexiest best and made a few new friends in the bargain! >> Head home on a high, but before that one last thing: Always cool down and do some stretches before you get into the car and drive off. Ignore this rule at your peril. And here are three final tips: >> Follow your instructor’s steps and don’t overdo things >> Take regular water breaks >> Lose yourself in the music and don’t worry about a few wrong steps. You will get it correct soon enough

Spanish sea-monster has scientists in a fix Call it a hoax or the real deal all you like – this apparent sea monster is the stuff nightmares are made of! Washed up on the beach of Spain’s Villaricos, it quickly became clear that whatever the hell this thing is it was indeed once a living creature. With rotting flesh scatted in bits and pieces along its terrifying frame, this was something even the most ardent skeptics couldn’t deny. Four meters in length, a clear set of huge horns to one end and a bizarre white body paint a picture of the kinds of mythical creatures we’re used to only seeing in the pages of fantasy novels – and it’s still unclear as to what it is we’re looking at. Official from the area are apparently just as baffled as we are. ”We have no idea what it can be, but it smelled bad, because it was so badly decomposed,” said Maria Sanchez, a Civil Protection Coordinator for the area,

first reported by Digital Spy. “A lady found one part, and we helped her retrieve the rest… We have no idea what it was. It really stank, as it was in the advanced stages of decomposition.” There are of course plenty of theories floating round as to what it might turn out to be, most of which are decidedly less interesting than the idea of a real-life sea monster washing up on the beach. “A few people have said it could be the backbone of a shark with the rest of it decaying away,” said a Marine Biological Association representative. “Really we would need a vertebrae to properly identify it. If it was a shark it would have cartilage skeleton as opposed to bone,” “As for the horns – it’s pretty inconclusive. No one knows of anything with horns in the sea. From the picture you wonder if it is even part of the creature.”
