It was a blast from the past at the House of Blues Mardi Gras blow out Friday, February 8, 2013. The House of Blues partied like it was 1980s. A New Orleans Zydeco Band greeted party goes as they entered the event. Rob Ryan, from The BUZZ, hosted the event as the honorary King of Mardi Gras. England’s Molly Ringwalds Band rocked the house with a tribute to John Hughes movies of the 80s. The food featured traditional Cajun and Mardi Gras cuisine. A great time was had by one and all.

Yesterday
& TODAY Tomorrow ,
Today is today. Yesterday was yesterday. Tomorrow will be tomorrow. I can’t, you can’t, no one from us can change this schedule set by nature. But that’s neither our point nor our subject here. The subject of discussion is the changes we have witnessed and are witnessing in our social life, cultural life and its effect on our family life and individual life.
By
Akber Lakhani
The family life or individual life that we are living today was not the life style of our parents yesterday. Similarly our children’s life style too will be quite different from the style we are familiar with today. Our parents were enjoying full control on all major and minor family affairs. They brought us up according to their own choice and circumstances. They got us admitted in schools of their choice and they even chose higher educational institutes for us according to their own liking. They wanted us to become Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers or whatever, it was entirely on their own choice and we had hardly any option left for us to take any decision on our own. And they held deciding power even when we were going to be married. They were the persons who chose life partners for us. All we had to do was just to give a nod. It may not be so in all the cases but it was certainly so in most cases. Naturally, it was just a reaction of the action their parents took when it was their time

to run family affairs. Time has changed a lot since then. Those were the days when our parents obeyed their parents and us, to our parents. These are the days when we can not expect the same from our children. Not to say that this is so because they are not obedient any more. No, it is not so. Actually the rules of family life and along with the rules of social life have changed, and those are not as they were yesterday. Who changed them, you or me? The answer is: none of us. Actually it is the time that has brought changes in our life, our family life, our social life. You do feel and experience that the life in its every sector is running on fast track. Don’t you? A year took a year’s time in those days and even in these days the year takes
similar time to complete but still we felt that it took a very long time to complete. Did not you feel so in your childhood days? And our family life in those days was such that only male members were going out of house to earn livelihood and women folk stayed in homes to look after homely affairs. They would cook, wash, clean and maintain house, raise children and so on. But the environment is changed. Women folk no more remain within four walls of the
house. They are now in out field working and earning along with their men. They do not and can not give as much time to look after homely affairs as they used to give before. exA man can not ex pect his woman waiting for him to serve fresh refood to him when he re turns home from work. He whatwill have to rely upon what ever is left in fridge; He will also have to lend his helping hand in dish washing, house afcleaning and other homely af fairs along with his woman. He will also have to take extra care and give extra time in raising children. In many cases, e v e n grown up children do share in earning if not for other reason, just to raise their own pocket money without being burden to their parents. This trend also gives them a sort of independence which is indepencertainly good for their future. But this indepen matdence also make them independent in the mat ter of deciding other factors including selecting careers and also selecting their life partners. witnessSo, these are the changes we are witness ing today and will see more changes coming in our life and that of our children. Tomorrow will show us and to our children also the impacts of ever changing time. The time that was different yesterday is different today and will be different tomorrow.

A
re you married? Congratulations, if your answer is “Yes”. My next question is: What is marriage? What a crazy question! You will put a counter question in your answer and will add: Who does not?! You are wrong my dear friend if you think so, because many of us can not give a correct answer. Don’t be surprised if I am saying so. Because many of us just do not know what is marriage. Is it a civil contract? Yes, but not only that. Is it a requirement of the age? Yes again, but not only that. If not only that then what is there to add in definition of marriage? Correct me if I am wrong but as I understand it the marriage is a civil contract and also a requirement of the age but with that it is also a life long process. In other word: it is like pursuit. A husband should keep pursuing his wife and a wife should keep pursuing her husband. Here, pursuing is in its broad meaning. You can put it also this way: A husband should keep trying to understand his wife and a wife should keep trying to understand her husband. In marriage, knowing the partner is not enough. You need to know your partner well and need to understand him/ her well. Knowing each other is good enough only up to getting married. But when you also understand your partner than the civil contract of marriage becomes meaningful. But there is something more than making it a meaningful marriage. Once you understand your partner your next step should be to make sure whether you understand your partner well. What your partner’s expectation is? What your partner needs from you. What are your partner’s liking and disliking? Then, after knowing this your another step should be to put it in practice. Do and act exactly according to your partner’s need. Make him/her happy and satisfied. Obviously, that makes it a life long process and that is why it is like pursuing your partner all the time to know and understand him/her more and more. Without fulfilling this part of your duty as a partner in marriage is merely half done and your marriage remains only in the meaning of a marriage. Knowing, understanding and making your partner happy and satisfied transform your marriage in to its true meaning: Happy marriage! A Valentine day, every year comes with this message and to make all married people, actually HAPPILY MARRIED PEOPLE.

HOUSTON, (UPI) - An investigaton has begun in the hacking of emails and other materials among Bush family members, a spokesman for former U.S. President George H.W. Bush said. The spokesman said a criminal investigation was under way but declined to comment further, the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday. The Smoking Gun website reported a hacker compromised emails, phone numbers and street addresses for many Bush family members, including the two former presidents. The hacker also accessed several photographs, including at least one taken of George H. W. Bush during his recent hospitalization in Houston.
Man killed wife, wounded stepson HOUSTON, (UPI) -- A Texas woman faces felony charges after her 9-month-old baby was so underfed he weighed just 7 pounds, 9 ounces, prosecutors said. Walteria Bledsoe was charged with felony injury to a child by omission, after doctors found her infant, Varius Bledsoe, weighing less than some children do at birth, KHOU-TV, Houston, reported. Varius was born prematurely at 28 weeks, doctors said. The Houston Chronicle reported Walteria Bledsoe couldn't get the infant to keep down formula so she tried feeding him evaporated milk on the advice of a family member. Babies that young cannot digest evaporated milk and can only be fed breast milk or infant formula. Varius was so malnourished doctors said he was suffering renal, liver and heart failure and required two surgeries. He is still being fed with a tube, they said. Walteria Bledsoe told state District Court Judge Marc Carter Monday she does not have a lawyer. Her two other children are in protective custody, the Chronicle said.
8 Famous fat cat diagnosed with cancer HOUSTON, (UPI) The owner of a Houston animal hospital hosting a famously fat feline said the cat does not appear to be suffering after his diagnosis with cancer. Dr. Alice Frei, owner of Southside Place Animal Hospital, said Tiny Tim, who weighed 35 pounds when he came to live at the hospital more than a year ago, was diagnosed with cancer in mid-January and a veterinary oncologist determined last week the feline had contracted a plasma cell tumor, an uncommon occurrence in cats, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday. "There is no really good chemotherapy for it," she said. "The best thing to do if you catch it, if it's not up against a body wall, is to remove it." However, she said Tiny Tim's cancer has already spread to his lymph nodes. The veterinarian said Tiny Tim is being given light chemotherapy and does not appear to be suffering any ill effects. "Tiny's handling it much better than I am," she said. "He's happy as a lark. I went through a pretty horrible three- to four-week period." Frei said Tiny Tim has been taken off his weight reduction diet and receives occasional treats such as slices of rotisserie chicken. The veterinarian said Tiny Tim is being closely monitored to make sure he isn't in pain. "We will not let him suffer," she said. "When he's uncomfortable and unhappy, we'll let him go."

The Woodlands Opens George Mitchell Nature Preserve Pedestrian Bridge THE WOODLANDS, TX: The Woodlands Development Company (TWDC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Howard Hughes Corporation (NYSE:HHC), recently opened The George Mitchell Nature Preserve Pedestrian Bridge, which spans Spring Creek, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The steel truss bridge is 70 feet long and 8 feet wide and connects Harris and Montgomery Counties along with The Woodlands’ Villages of Indian
Springs and Creekside Park. The pedestrian bridge is located in the 1,700-acre George Mitchell Nature Preserve, named in honor of The Woodlands’ founder, George Mitchell. The Preserve includes seven miles of frontage along Spring Creek. It is part of the Spring Creek Greenway, a joint effort of Harris and Montgomery Counties to connect and protect up to 12,000 acres of forest on both sides of Spring Creek.
The nature preserve was taken into consideration when building the pedestrian bridge. “Preservation of the existing forest during construction was one of the goals of the project. The bridge and adjoining site were constructed without the use of heavy equipment in the preserve,” said Bob Bruce, Director of Landscape Architecture for TWDC. The project was funded by Texas Parks and Wildlife, The Woodlands
Township and TWDC. The bridge can be accessed from the north through the Flintridge Trailhead parking lot, located on Flintridge Drive just west of Gosling Road. Once the George Mitchell Nature Preserve is accessed through the Flintridge Trailhead, the pedestrian bridge is about ½ mile down. From the south, the bridge is accessed at the Creekside Trailhead parking lot, north of the Rob Fleming Park Lodge.

No one will be allowed to disrupt election process:
Gilani
MULTAN - Former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that no power would disrupt the election process, adding that the elections would be held at their scheduled time. Talking to Pakistan Today, Gilani said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would win a landslide victory in the upcoming elections in southern Punjab. Talking about PPP’s election strategy, he said that the party had evolved a system of merit according to the governmental performance of members. He claimed that on the basis of the strategy, he said that PPP would win in the next elections.
Malala discharged from UK hospital LONDON - Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousufzai has been discharged from a British hospital where she had been receiving treatment for nearly four months after being shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban. The 15-year-old Malala underwent skull reconstruction and a cochlear implant surgery to restore her hearing last weekend. Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital said Friday that Malala has been released after ”making good recovery” from her surgery and will now continue her rehabilitation at her family’s temporary home in Birmingham and visit the hospital occasionally for outpatient appointments. Malala was shot on Oct. 9 on the way home from school by Taliban angered at her objection to the group’s interpretation of Islam, which limits girls’ access to education. (PT)
Opposition agrees on two former SC judges as caretaker PM: Nisar ISLAMABAD - Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Nisar Ali Khan on Friday said the opposition had reached consensus on two former Supreme Court judges out of eight names for the caretaker prime minister. Taking a jab at the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in a press conference, he said Imran Khan’s party had now become Pakistan Tehreek-e-Tazaad (contradictions). Nisar said the opposition had considered eight names for the coming caretaker setup, adding that consensus had been developed on names of two former Supreme Court judges — Nasir Aslam Zahid and Shakirullah Jan. He said no backdoor diplomacy or negotiations with the government were under progress on the issue of the caretaker setup. Nisar clarified that it would be the decision
introduced by the opposition to dissolve the Punjab Assembly and no one else had the mandate to make such decisions. The opposition leader said the “PTI had earlier supported the chief election commissioner and the election bill and Imran Khan had shown full faith in Fakhruddin G Ebrahim. Now he has reservations just like Tahirul Qadri”. Nisar said, “The PTI always boasted of not forming any allegiance with any party, then why is it tilting towards Tahirul Qadri all of a sudden.” He further blamed the PTI for accepting former president Pervez Musharraf in the past and his chosen election commissioner Irshad Hussain Khan, whose eligibility
was questionable as he had postponed elections for three years and allowed amendments in the constitution. “The TMQ, PTI and PML-Q want to postpone elections, therefore, they are bringing up all these reservations.” The opposition leader reminded media about the issue of Justice (r) Irshad Hussain, saying that the three parties observed criminal silence over the issue and accepted then military dictator Pervez Musharraf and the then controversial “imported” prime minister. “Imran Khan cannot bring a tsunami in a teacup and PTI has become a party of contradictions rather than a party of justice.” The senior PML-N leader was of the view that the government had vowed to bulldoze the
House with the Higher Education Bill at the eleventh hour and his party would oppose the move as it was not in the interest of the nation. Nisar said the PML-N would bring its own bill on the new provinces and the homework had been completed for the purpose. “No more controversial bills would be tolerated anymore,” Nisar added. They are pitted against Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a powerful Democrat — and former chief of staff to President Barack Obama — who wants to extract more concessions from teachers while the school district faces a nearly $700 million deficit. Nawaz calls for end to ‘daku raj’ in Sindh KANDARIO/SUKKUR - Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has called for an end to “daku raj” in Sindh and restoration of peace in Karachi. “The president should try to put the country on the road to progress… he could get Nawaz Sharif’s vote this way,” Nawaz said, adding, “We have been deceived many times, we will not be bamboozled by talks anymore.” Addressing a public gathering in Kandario district of Sindh, Nawaz said when he was the prime min-
ister he used to spend every other day in Sindh but his government was terminated within two years. He said around 10 people were killed in Karachi everyday and 300 people had been in the city in January alone. Nawaz said police and institutions had failed in Sindh to such an extent that the Supreme Court had to give orders to arrest killers in the province. “The Supreme Court is issuing orders for the arrest of murderers... the accused in Shazaib murder case was arrested from Dubai after
the order of the Supreme Court.” He said the administration and police had failed in Sindh and those who used to support the PPP had lost all hopes. Nawaz said he had supported President Asif Ali Zardari with good intentions but the president had betrayed him. Nawaz said he had told Zardari his vote would remain with him if he managed to lead Pakistan towards progress and development, “but unfortunately Zardari failed to do so”.(PT)

Swiss authorities say they can’t reopen graft cases until Zardari steps down from Presidency Zardari decides to make Lahore his permanent abode LAHORE - Heralding good news for the embattled Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), the Swiss authorities have expressed their inability to reopen the graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari because he enjoys immunity as the head of state. According to Swiss authorities, President Zardari enjoys immunity against all criminal charges and no action can be taken against him till he holds the post of president. “This is without prejudice to the legal rights and defences of presidents/heads of state which may be available under the law, constitution and international law,” the Swiss letter states. Federal Law Minister Farooq Naik has confirmed receiving the letter and said that he would himself apprise the president about its contents. The much awaited letter
that led to ouster of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani from his office was written to the Swiss authorities in November 2012. The apex court had given the government one-month deadline to write the letter to the Swiss authorities to withdraw a previous letter to the Swiss government by former attorney general Malik Qayyum, seeking closure of alleged graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. meet Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif to offer his condolence on the death of Nawaz’s brother, Abbas Sharif, and also to discuss the various matters of national interest, including the formation of the caretaker setup. “Contrary to Nawaz Sharif’s assertion that President Zardari was yet to initiate contact with him, the president’s military secretary had conveyed his desire to meet the PML-N chief to the latter’s staff but so far they had not responded to the request,” the sources said. They said that President Zardari was in no hurry to call on Nawaz as he was “going to stay put” in Lahore indefinitely. “The president will also receive Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi at the Lahore airport when the foreign leader arrives in Pakistan on an official visit.
President Zardari will also attend a ceremony at Punjab Governor’s House in a couple of days where a high-level Chinese delegation would be formally handed over the charge of the Gwadar port,” the sources said. They said that President Zardari’s shifting of base to Lahore might also be linked with the Lahore High Court’s directions regarding his holding of dual offices – the co-chairmanship of the Pakistan People’s Party and the Presidency. On Saturday, several political leaders and prominent personalities called on President Zardari at Bilawal House. The president also paid a visit to the shrine of Lahore’s patron saint, Hazrat Data Gunj Baksh and is scheduled to visit the mausoleum of Allama Muhammad Iqbal in the next few days. (PT)

Afzal Guru hanged, buried in Delhi’s Tihar Jail NEW DELHI (IE) Afzal Guru, convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack, was hanged in Tihar Jail on Saturday, in an operation shrouded in secrecy. Afzal Guru’s body has been buried inside Tihar jail complex, says prison official.
CM Omar Abdullah appeals for calm In a hurriedly convened press conference in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked people ''to maintain clam'' saying it was Center's decision and the state government had nothing to do with it. ''We were informed yesterday evening about the hanging (of Afzal Guru),'' Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in a press conference at his Gupkar residence. ''The case was with the Centre and we (state government) had nothing to do with it,'' he said. Chief Minister who returned from New Delhi on Saturday morning, asked people to maintain calm in the state. ''I appeal people to maintain peace,'' he said. ''I also appeal media to verify the facts before disseminating information about the events.'' Abdullah, however, didn't take any questions from the media. Curfew was imposed in the entire Kashmir Valley today as authorities apprehended law and order problem in the wake of Afzal Guru's execution, even as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah arrived here to personally monitor the situation. As a pre-emptive measure, all 10 districts of Kashmir was brought under curfew before day break, a senior police official said. Large number of police and CRPF personnel have been deployed across the Valley to maintain law and order, the official said. Attempts were made to break curfew in Sopore (the hometown of Afzal Guru) and Baramulla, police said, adding that security personnel fired in these two places.
“Afzal Guru was hanged at 8 am,” Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said shortly after the execution of the Jaish-e-Mohammad militant. The family of Afzal Guru was informed about the decision of the government that his mercy petition was rejected. The process of hanging Guru, who was sentenced to death in 2004, was completed by 8 am. Guru was hanged in jail no 3 in Delhi Tihar Jail. The mercy plea of 43-year-old Guru, who was sentenced to death in 2002 by a special court and later upheld by the Supreme Court in 2004, was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee a few days back, Rashtrapati Bhavan spokespeman Venu Rajamony said. Reminiscent of the hanging of Mumbai attack convict Ajmal Kasab on November 21 last year, Guru’s execution was kept under wraps in a top secret operation. The family of Guru residing in Sopore in north Kashmir was informed about the decision of the government that his mercy petition has been rejected. The body of Guru, who has been in the death row for over 10 years, is likely to be buried in Tihar Jail itself as it was done in the case of Kasab who was buried in Pune’s Yerwada jail soon after his execution. Curfew was imposed in the Kashmir Valley in the early morning today. Jammu and Kashmir Minister Omar Abdullah, DGP Ashok Prasad and other senior officers flew from Jammu to Srinagar early this morning to keep a close watch on the law and order situation.
Pro-Pakistan separatist groups have given a call for a three-day shut down in the Valley. People have kept their shutters down in Kishtwar district following the call for bandh. Additional Deputy Commissioner R K Shevan said administration is monitoring the situation, which has been peaceful so far. Guru was convicted on charges

conspiracy in the December 2001 attack on Parliament and was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2004. On December 13, 2001, five heavily-armed gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine persons. They included five Delhi Police
personnel, a woman Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) official, two Parliament watch and ward staff and a gardener. A journalist, who was injured, died later. All five terrorists were shot dead. Guru was arrested within hours after the attack from a bus in the national capital. A year later, four accused, including Afzal Guru, were arrested for the attack and found guilty after a trial. Guru walked to the gallows at around 7.30 am and appeared calm, a top Tihar Jail official said. A former fruit merchant, Guru was sentenced to death along with Delhi University professor S A R Gilani and Shaukat Hussain. Hussain’s wife Afsan was let off. Gilani was, however, let off by the High Court in 2003 while the sentence of Guru and Hussain was upheld. The Supreme Court confirmed the death penalty of Guru in 2005 while in the case of Hussain, it was commuted to 10 years. The Home Minister said Guru’s case was recommended by the Home Ministry in 2011. “After that there was a new President and a new Home Minister. The President sent Guru’s file to the Home Ministry. “We sent it to the President on January 21, 2013. On February 3, the President sent Guru’s file rejecting the mercy plea to the Home Ministry. I put my signature on February four and sent it for further execution to the department. The due procedure was followed and it was then decided that the hanging will take place on February 8 (today) at 8 am,” he said. He is the second Kashmiri militant who has been hanged after JKLF leader Maqbool Bhat who was executed on February 11, 1984.
Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru has been hanged to death and consequently curfew imposed on the capital city of Srinagar and other towns, according to top ranking government sources here. A senior Police official confirmed to The Hindu in the morning on Saturday that curfew had been imposed on Srinagar as Guru, according to the message communicated to Jammu & Kashmir Police from New Delhi, has been hanged to death early in the morning at Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Kerry warns North Korea against any nuclear test
Support grows for ‘drone court’ to review lethal strikes During a fresh round of debate this week over President Barack Obama's claim that he can unilaterally order lethal strikes by unmanned aircraft against U.S. citizens, some lawmakers proposed a middle ground: a special federal "drone court" that would approve suspected militants for targeting. While the idea of a judicial review of such operations may be gaining political currency, multiple U.S. officials said on Friday that imminent action by the U.S. Congress or the White House to create one is unlikely. The idea is being actively considered, however, according to a White House official. At Thursday's confirmation hearing for CIA director nominee John Brennan, senators discussed establishing a secret court or tribunal to rule on the validity of cases that U.S. intelligence agencies draw up for killing suspected militants using drones. The court could be modeled on an existing court which examines applications for electronic eavesdropping on suspected spies or terrorists. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Thursday that she planned to "review proposals for ... legislation to ensure that drone strikes are carried out in a manner consistent with our values, and the proposal to create an analogue of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to review the conduct of such strikes." Senator Angus King, a Maine independent, said during the hearing that he envisioned a scenario in which executive branch officials would go before a drone court "in a confidential and top-secret way, make the case that this American citizen is an enemy combatant, and at least that would be ... some check on the activities of the executive." King suggested that only drone attacks on U.S. citizens would need court approval; other

bus crash kills 53
Fifty-three people were killed in a high-speed collision between a bus and a truck in Zambia on Thursday, the government said, one of the country’s worst-ever traffic accidents. The bus carrying 73 passengers hurtled into an oncoming truck, leaving bloodied bodies and wreckage on a main road north of Lusaka. “I can confirm that 53 people have died in the accident,” Harry Kalaba, an official in the vice president’s office, told AFP from the crash site 100 kilometres north of the capital.
proposals leave open the possibility that such a court could also rule regarding drone strikes on non-Americans. On Friday, a White House official indicated the administration was open to the idea. Without specifically mentioning drones, the official said "the White House has been discussing various ways there could be independent review of counterterrorism actions for more than a year." Even if a special court were established, however, congressional and administration officials said it would not happen quickly. Congressional aides said discussions are at a preliminary stage, with officials also reviewing proposals that law professors have floated in academic articles. On Friday, King sent a letter to Feinstein and Republican Saxby Chambliss, intelligence committee vice-chairman, asking them to work with him on legislation to create a court which could provide judicial review of proposals to target a drone attack against a U.S. citizen alleged to be a "senior operational leader of Al Qaeda." In the past, Obama administration officials have expressed a lack of interest when the idea of creating a court to vet drone targets was brought up, one congressional official said. The administration also has fought lawsuits filed by relatives of Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born al Qaeda operative who was killed in a U.S. drone attack in Yemen in 2011. On Friday, senior Democrats and Republicans on the Senate and House Judiciary committees sent Obama letters requesting that their committees be given access to Justice
Department documents justifying drone strikes. Some members of the congressional intelligence committees had been given such access the night before Brennan's confirmation hearing in an apparent attempt by the administration to mollify some critics. Christopher Anders, senior legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, questioned the need for creating a new court to review drone targeting lists. "We have courts that are fully capable and experienced" in dealing with sensitive national security matters, he said. Federal courts in Washington, New York City, and Alexandria, Virginia, routinely handle highly classified materials yet operate with more transparency and more independence than the ultra-secretive foreign intelligence court, Anders said. If the United States did set up a drone target court, human rights advocates would still likely have problems with it. Geoffrey Robertson, one of Britain's most prominent human rights lawyers, described the current U.S. drone-strike policy as "execution without trial" and "international killing (which) ... violates the right to life." Robertson said that in his interpretation of international law, any court set up to review candidates for possible drone attacks would have to publish target lists, so that those listed would have an opportunity either to give themselves up or be able to have friends or relatives petition for their removal from the lists. "This should be an open process," Robertson said.
US Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday warned North Korea that its expected nuclear tests would only increase the risk of conflict and would do nothing to help the country's poverty stricken people. Kerry made the remarks when he dropped in on a group of young students taking a foreign policy lessons at the State Department. Kerry said; “you look at the problems we're having with North Korea right now, questions of the immanency perhaps of another test, more missiles being fired, perhaps a nuclear test. To what end?. I mean, all that will happen is greater potential of conflict. North Korea has vowed to carry out a third nuclear test soon, and concerns have been raised over the type of fissile material used in the device. Tests by Pyongyang in 2006 and 2009 involved plutonium, so a uranium detonation would prove that regime of new leader Kim Jong-Un have developed an additional way to make bombs. Kerry said "the people of North Korea are starving, "they desperately need to become more open and connected to the world instead of harboring some of the worst gulags in the world where people are tortured, and forced to labor.

Snow heads out to sea NEW YORK, (UPI) -- A massive storm headed out to sea Saturday after dumping up to 3 feet of snow in parts of Canada, New England and New York and claiming at least six lives. The storm, formed by the collision of two weather systems, was slightly less severe than predicted, CNN reported. Forecasters said before the snow began falling the blizzard might be a record-breaker in the Boston area. The storm left about 650,000 homes and businesses without power. In Massachusetts, part of Hull, 20 miles southeast of Boston, was evacuated because of coastal flooding. At least four deaths in New York, Connecticut and southern Ontario were blamed on the storm. A 12-year-old Boston boy died of carbon monoxide poisoning and a 49-year-old Connecticut man collapsed and died shoveling snow. By Saturday afternoon, flights were starting to take off at New York area airports. Massachusetts Gov.
Deval Patrick lifted a statewide ban on driving at 4 p.m., 24 hours after it took effect. Logan International Airport in Boston and Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Conn., were still shut down Saturday but limited service has resumed at New York-area airports, CNN said. About 5,000 flights at about 60 airports were canceled Friday due to the storm. Amtrak said it has canceled all Saturday service between New York and Boston, as well as its Springfield Shuttle service from New Haven, Conn., to Springfield, Mass. Amtrak crews worked through the night to clear track of snow and downed trees, and make necessary track repairs. Trains were running Saturday between New York and Washington, and the Empire Service between New York and Albany and Keystone Service between New York, Philadelphia and Harrisburg was also operating. Major highways were all but
abandoned as dozens of cars remained immobile on the Long Island Expressway after being trapped by heavy snowfall late Friday. Parts of Connecticut had as much as 38 inches of snow by Saturday morning. Worcester, Mass., had 27 inches and Boston had 21 inches. In New York City, which received a relatively paltry 8 inches in Central Park, Mayor Michael Bloomberg told people to stay home and warned against the panic buying of gasoline. The hundreds of thousands of people without electricity probably won't have their power restored until after the storm ends, when utility workers will be able to dig out the lines from under mounds of snow, said Marcy Reed, president of National Grid. Some of those power lines had been brought down by high winds, The Boston Globe reported. Logan International Airport reported a peak gust of 76 mph, the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane, National Weather Meteorologist Alan Dun-
ham said. The wind is also whipping high waves. Dunham said a coastal flood warning had been issued in Massachusetts for Cape Cod and the east-facing coast. More than 404,000 power outages have reported in the state. Nearly 30 percent of the National Grid customers in Rhode Island were without power, the Providence Journal reported. Heaviest hit were the towns of Barrington and Bristol, where everyone was without power, and Warren, where only 1 percent of residents had electricity. Meteorologists said the storm was so intense because two storms had combined into one, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported. "It's not that this storm is so unbelievably intense from a pressure standpoint -- it's just sopping wet," said Andrew Freedman, a senior writer at Climate Central. "The moisture content of this storm and the amount of liquid it's going to produce is amazing."

REHAN, THE YOUNG TURK
CITY360HOUSTON.COM
By: Nargis Lakhani March 23rd, 29th and April 20th and 27th; these are culturally important dates for Houstonians. Rehan Siddiqi of HumTum Radio is all set to offer unforgettable memories to the South Asian community of Greater Houston. Great artists from the musical world of South Asia are being brought across the globe, not only to entertain but to keep alive a piece of our cultural heritage. My first impression on meeting Rehan was the feeling of being enveloped in positive energy; in fact the premises of HumTum Radio seemed to hum with a feeling of excitement and enthusiasm. The momentum that is being built up seems to be enveloping the south Asian community in the city. You tune into the AM radio channels, you may be driving across the city and you view these huge bill boards with the photos of Adnan Sami or Rahat Fatehali Khan, you leaf through the local newspapers, every media platform has been used to promote these upcoming events. Rehan shared that he has discovered the key to organizing successful events – a combination of the right artists, best marketing and the most memorable experience for the people who come to these shows. The 24/7
contact that the radio has with the local community gives him a good insight about what the community likes and also what it dislikes. He uses this information to his advantage when planning for events. The people of Houston can look forward to great entertainment at these upcoming shows. Alongside enjoying great soul stirring live fusion of traditional and modern music and singing, you will be treated to a royal welcome with roses and then some fireworks. For Rehan, events are about creating happiness, bringing smiles of satisfaction on the face of the artists as well as the audience. “I want to give everybody a TREAT at my events”, says Rehan. “What is the source of your energy?” I asked. He reflected for a while and then shared something very profound. I think even he seemed to be touched by his own reflection. He said, “You may do everything that is required of you for ensuring success in your life, yet it is the family environment that deeply impacts you. The support, encouragement and motivation that I receive from my family members makes me feel confident and keep me happy.” Wise words indeed! His career in the entertainment industry goes back many years. As a young boy of fourteen,

Rehan Siddiqi @ 713-545-4115 he had hosted an event as a DJ for a gathering of 250 people; slowly and steadily, he has been charting his way. Living in the west, he has an opportunity to learn ‘Best Practices’ from the Western Entertainment Industry. ‘PERFECTION’, that’s his goal in everything he does. He throws himself completely into everything he undertakes in his life and then pulls out all stops and keeps going till he feels completely satisfied within his own heart. It is no small feat to have the great names in the entertainment industry insist on coming back to do shows with the same promoter, Rehan in this case, over and over again. Once an artist comes under Rehan’s banner, they choose to come back exclusively with him, Rehan was the first promoter in the country who brought over 8000 people for Rahat in 2011 and over 8000 for Sonu Nigam in 2007 he did back to back sold out events for Rahat in 2010 and pankaj udhas in 2012. Pankaj Udhas said that Rehan is the most amazing promoter he has ever toured with and will only come back with his banner. Rehan also brought the first big South Asian event at Sugarland stadium with its capacity for 8000 people, but actual numbers who attended the show was 10,000. Many more
wanted to come but could not get in as tickets were all sold out. Rehan Siddiqi is the most refined promoter, his shows have class and when shows have his name, there is a guarantee that these will be sold out events in Houston even if they are back to back. Rehan believes in supporting the good work being done by other organizations as well. When River Stone, in Fort Bend County, conducted a poll, wherein the residents had to vote for their favorite of the five celebrities living in the area, Rehaan was the winner. The award of $5000 that he won was given to the Fort Bend Education Foundation. It was indeed a treat to meet somebody who has made his way up in this part of the world, facing the same challenges that all of us have. Rehan is all praise for City360 Houston’s managing partner, Mr. Saqib Rana, for launching this newspaper. He is a great fan of Saqib’s art work and is confident that the people of Houston are in for a visual treat. We wish Rehan all the very best for all his future ventures. ‘A Big Star Show’, most definitely in 2013, that’s what he is working on bringing to the people of Houston.

Shah Rukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar team up for Don 3? What’s in the air at Mannat? From the soundsof it, Don 3 and may be Rohit Shetty’s next, which Shah Rukh has reportedly taken a shine to. TOI has learnt that SRK, who is on a short break from Chennai Express right now, has had several meetings with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, to firm up the fine print for the third installment of the slick and commercially successful franchise. Meanwhile, in a recent interview, SRK also lavished praises on Rohit Shetty, saying how much he has enjoyed working with him forChennai Express. “We are looking at two more scripts,” he said, indicating that he may work with the filmmaker soon again. So where does that put the other keenly awaited SRK-starrer? According to sources, SRK has been taking his time over Happy New Year, to be directed by Farah Khan and produced by SRK’s Red Chillies. “SRK was supposed to help Farah finalise the casting for her film. It was expected that Farah will announce the name of her heroine - there has been quite a bit of speculation on who that is - at the beginning of the year. But no one, except Abhishek Bachchan and SRK, have been finalised for the four-hero project yet,” said a source. In fact, the script for Happy New Year has been locked, and songs are also about to be recorded, but with the casting yet to be finalised there is enough and more room for speculation. There have been reports that Farah may be tweaking the role of the female protagonist Mohini, who hails from a Bhandup chawl, to accommodate a fresh face from the South. But the filmmaker pooh-poohed all the reports, and insisted that she is not willing to compromise on her script. “I need someone who can match up to the four men in the film. Someone who is not too young, since my hero is mature. A girl who can emote, looks good and can dance well. There is no way I will make any changes to this character,” she insisted. As for the delay in finalising the casting, she said, “I am waiting for Shah Rukh to free himself from Chennai Express,” said Farah to TOI. “We have not had the time to discuss the project in a while, but we will very soon,” she assured us.

of the Sai Paranjpe’s 1981 classic, Chashme Buddoor, in which Ali Zafar plays Farooque Shaikh’s character, is coming to cinemas on
April 5. To sate the eager fans, the studios have not only released the promo poster with Ali smack in the centre, but also the official trailer.
Since whatever Ali has touched in Bollywood has turned to gold, film gurus are already predicting a hit. This would be Ali Zafar’s fourth film in Bollywood where he has already garnered huge international fame for his performance in hits like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and London Paris New York. When asked to comment upon the project Ali said, “When I saw the original Chashme Buddoor, I knew that the plot must retain its authenticity. Also, while it must have been a challenge to render it into modern times and aesthetics, David sir has done a brilliant job. It’s a family entertainer. I think we are all excited about it.” As remakes go, Bollywood could not have picked a more popular film to modernise, but with Ali Zafar in the lead they could not have been more spot-on with the casting. Ali, who has mesmerised the audience with his musical talent and low-key art exhibits which he often auctions for charity, continues to test the boundaries of the entertainment industry and continues to impress with his talent.

Shahid Kapoor
is all set for Rambo Rajkumar
AJ
Shahid Kapoor, Bollywood’s favourite chocolate boy is all set for his south release, Rambo Rajkumar and is seen preparing really hard and getting in good shape to follow his director Prabhu Dheva’s instructions. The movie in question, Rambo Rajkumar is all set and will start shooting in a couple of weeks. Rumour has it that Shahid is very clear about what he wants and is ready to go totally in the direction that Prabhu has set for him, who also happens to be the director of sensational south remake hits like Wanted and Rowdy Rathore. Also, now that the other two movies have been mentioned, you’d also like to know that no one is under the false pretense that Rambo Rajkumar will be of the same genre as Wanted and Rowdy Rathore.
al
The movie is not all south style but rather Prabhu Deva style. Viki Rajani, who is producing the film along with Sunil Lulla said “Today if you go and see mainstream action masala movies, you see senior actors like Salman (Wanted, Bodyguard), Akshay (Rowdy Rathore) or Ajay (Singham) in there. You don’t see someone who is a little fresh and younger featuring in such genre, this was one factor that really excited me as it would be something new for me as well as audience” Whats further exciting for Shahid is that everyone who has done south movies before, were all from the big lead and were senior celebrities, Shahid Kapoor will however be the youngest kid on the block.

Bollywood beauty, Sridevi opted for a grey Zara dress at Aamby Valley Broadway Delights Launch. She paired the dress with ankle strap platform sandals. Honestly, we didn’t really like the dress on her. She looked very dull, considering the floor being grey too.

Alia Bhatt, B-town’s latest newcomer has her hands full. After delivering a super hit movie,Student Of The Year, Alia now has two more movies up her sleeve. Thanks to Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt will now be seen in 2 states. The movie is screen adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name. Though Chetan was very skeptical about casting Alia Bhatt for the role, a photoshoot of Alia in the character convinced him that Alia would nail the character. Its rumoured that “Chetan and Sajid were convinced from the outset that they’d cast a Punjabi actor and a South Indian actress to retain full authenticity in the plot. The original plan was to cast Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. But when Arjun Kapoorstepped into the picture Deepika couldn’t be seen looking compatible with Arjun.” Since they couldnt possibly pair Deepika with Arjun, Karan suggested Alia for the role. Well, as they say one man’s loss is another man’s gain and in this case it’s Deepika’s loss and Alia’s gain. Moreover, when they started the photoshoot, Alia shocked everyone. Apparently nobody expected Alia do the role well with out a lot of hard work. But she showed everyone how determined she is towards her work. Now it’s only the accent that Alia will have to work rather hard on. Let’s hope all goes well for Alia! (PT)

Care May Not Raise Behavior Woes in Kids After All (WM)Parents who send their children to day care may be able to breathe a sigh of relief. New research finds that children in child care do not have an increased risk of behavioral problems. The catch? The new study was conducted in Norway, which has a vastly different child care system than the United States -- where studies have been conducted that did find increased behavioral problems. Differences between several studies finding behavioral troubles such as aggression -- including a 2007 U.S. National Institutes of Health study -- and this one from Norway noting no such link may be attributable to vastly different systems of child care in the two countries, authors of the new study suggested.
Young Adults are Most Stressed Generation (HD)Young Americans between 18 and 33 years old -- the so-called millennials -- are more stressed than the rest of the population, according to a new report from the American Psychological Association. What's stressing them out? Jobs and money mostly, said Norman Anderson, CEO of the American Psychological Association, during a Thursday morning press conference. On a scale of 1 to 10, the millennial generation stands at 5.4 stress-wise, significantly higher than the national average of 4.9, the association found after surveying more than 2,000 Americans. "Clearly there are a number of pressures facing young people that might account for this increase in stress," Anderson said. "These individuals are growing up in an era of unprecedented economic upheaval. This coincides with the time they are finishing school and trying to establish themselves in
society." Getting a job, starting a family and repaying student loans are all stressful, he added. "They have great difficulty finding jobs because of the higher unemployment and underemployment rates," Anderson said. These young adults also don't feel they're getting support from the health system. perOnly 25 per cent of millennials give the health care system an A grade, compared with 32 percent of the rest of the populapopula tion, according to the report, Stress in America: Missing Connecthe Health Care Connec tion. In addition, 49 percent said they aren't managing their stress well, and only 23 percent think their doctor helps them make healthy lifestyle and behavior changes "a lot or a great deal." Only 17 percent think their doctor helps them
manage their stress. "When people receive professional help to manage stress and make healthy behavior changes, they do better at achieving their health goals," Anderson said. On that measure, the United States falls short, he said. To lower the rates of chronic illnesses and reduce the nation's health costs, "we need to improve how we view and treat stress and unhealthy behaviors that are contributing to the high incidence of disease in the United States." Those who get support for stress from their doctor fare much better than those who don't, the researchers said. People suffering from chronic illnesses report even less support for stress and lifestyle management than Americans without a chronic condition, according to the survey. Despite seeing their doctor more often than most people, only 25 percent of those with a chronic illness say they get "a great deal or a lot" of stress management support from their doctor. And 41 percent of these chronically ill people said their stress level had increased in the past year, the researchers found. The disconnect between what people need to manage stress and what the health care system delivers is evident at all ages, the survey found.
Understanding the Health Care Law
The Requirement to Buy Health Insurance Coverage Under the Affordable Care Act By: Sudhir Mathuria Beginning in 2014 you will be required to buy health insurance. The following is the check list how one will be affected under the new law: Do any of the following apply to you? • You are part of a religion opposed to acceptance of benefits from a health insurance policy. • You are an undocumented immigrant. • You are incarcerated. • You are a member of an Indian tribe. • Your family income is below the threshold requiring you to file a tax return ($9,350 for an individual, $18,700 for a family in 2010). • You have to pay more than 8% of your income for health insurance, after taking into account any employer contributions or tax credits. If any of the above conditions applies to you, there is no penalty for being without health insurance. If none of the above condition applies to you, check if you had any of the following: Were you insured for the whole year through a combination of any of the following sources? • Medicare.
• Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). • TRICARE (for service members, retirees, and their families). • The veteran’s health program. • A plan offered by an employer. • Insurance bought on your own that is at least at the Bronze level. • A grandfathered health plan in existence before the health reform law was enacted. If the answer is yes, the requirement to have health insurance is satisfied and no penalty is assessed. If answer is no, there is a penalty for being without health insurance. Penalty in 2014 Penalty is $95 per adult and $47.50 per child (up to $285 for a family) or 1.0% of family income, whichever is greater Penalty in 2015 Penalty is $325 per adult and $162.50 per child (up to $975 for a family) or 2.0% of family income, whichever is greater. Penalty 2016 2016 and Beyond Penalty is $695 per
adult and $347.50 per child (up to $2,085 for a family) or 2.5% of family income, whichever is greater. The penalty is pro-rated by the number of months without coverage, though there is no penalty for a single gap in coverage of less than 3 months in a year. The penalty cannot be greater than the national average premium for Bronze level coverage in an Exchange. After 2016, penalty amounts are increased annually by the cost of living. Key Facts: • Premiums for health insurance bought through Exchanges would vary by age. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the national average annual premium in an Exchange in 2016 would be $4,500-5,000 for an individual and $12,000-12,500 for a family for Bronze coverage (the lowest of the four tiers of coverage that will be available). • In 2010 employees paid $899 on average towards the cost of individual coverage in an employer plan and $3,997 for a family of four.

It has become appallingly obvious that our technology Albert Einstein has exceeded our humanity. 5 Best Windows 8 Music and Video Apps No. 1: PrimeTube PrimeTube has 4+ stars out of a possible 5 from 152 ratings in the Windows Store. PrimeTube, from APP LYF, is an elegant and refreshing tool for watching YouTube video. The Windows tile-like interface fits well aesthetically within the Windows 8 environment. The app allows for continuous playback of YouTube favorites and playlists; recording and uploading of video; offline viewing options; browsing and watching at the same time; and a way to pin channels, videos and playlists as animated tiles to the Windows 8 Start menu. No. 2: Xbox Video Microsoft's Xbox video app has 3+ stars from 1,809 ratings in the Windows Store. The Xbox Video app, included in the Windows 8 OS, lets you rent or buy movies and television shows in HD. Look for the Video tile on the Windows 8 home page to launch the app, and agree to the terms and conditions. The app will also allow you to browse your own video collection. Cross-Microsoft compatibility means you can watch via an Xbox game console too. No. 3: Slacker Radio Slacker Radio has 3+ stars out of a possible 5 from 365 ratings in the Windows Store. The lack of a Windows 8 Pandora radio app prompts TechNewsWorld to include the next best thing in our Top 5 apps, and that's Slacker Radio. It's similar to
Pandora, providing millions of songs for free streaming. Both services let you enter a song, artist or album and then the services create a playlist for you based on the data entered. Slacker does have more songs than Pandora, and has a bunch of preset stations too -- plus it has the Windows 8 app, whereas Pandora requires the use of a browser. No. 4: TuneIn Radio The TuneIn app is rated 3+ stars out of a possible 5 with 1,221 ratings in the Windows Store. We've already included TuneIn radio in our Appy Best of the Windows 8 Entertainment apps, but we like it so much -- and think it's such an important app -- that it appears here under the Music app selection too. Sixty-thousand radio stations from around the world are indexed, and they cover everything from French station Radio Mozart and its Mozart 24/7 playlist, to Argentinian Radio Flamenco. Ibiza anyone? You name it, in other words. No. 5: MusicTube has 3+ stars out of a possible 5 from 119 ratings in the Windows Store. Ciunkos' free adaptation of YouTube, called "MusicTube," brings you just the music videos. You can search and browse over 1,000 artists. Last.fm provides the artists' images. TechNewsWorld places this app in the runner-up category not because we don't like it, but because we think it needs to index more artists.

Microsoft Launches New Office for Consumers
The new Office suite of applications – including desktop staples Outlook email, Excel, Word and PowerPoint – is aimed at home users rather than businesses, and is designed to extend Microsoft’s domination of the workplace to the home office and beat back growing competition from Google Inc’s free online apps. “The notion of an always up-to-date streaming version of Office comes directly from how people are using devices today,” said Kurt DelBene, head of Microsoft’s Office unit, in a phone interview. “You really want all your content to roam with you. We see that as an opportunity to deliver what customers are asking for.” The version of the new software launched on Tuesday, called Office 365 Home Premium, is the first major overhaul of Office since 2010. Big companies, which generally buy Microsoft’s software under multi-year contracts, already got the latest features of the new Office in December.
How to Fine-Tune Your Privacy Settings for Facebook Graph Search
Facebook Graph Search is coming, and now -- before it hits -- is a good time to tweak your Facebook privacy settings.
What is it? Graph Search is a new search function within Facebook. It's not yet been officially launched yet, but it is available in Beta. Graph Search differs from existing Facebook search functions because instead of just indexing bits of information, it indexes a large number of connections between pieces of information. For example, Facebook's search functionality now provides people, places and things. The initial phase of Graph Search will provide the relationships between people, places and photos as well. Some Graph Search term examples, provided by Facebook on its website: "people who like cycling who are from my hometown"; "restaurants in London my friends have been to"; "photos I like"; and "music my friends like." Essentially, with Graph Search you will be able to look up and get results for anything shared with you on Facebook, and others will be able to do the same with things you've shared with them. What Is Indexed in Graph? Content set to Public will be searchable. People will be findable based on things they've shared with you, including interests and items within their profile -- for example, friends who have shared their city with you, or friends whose city is public. Photos will findable by you if you -- or friends -- have posted or tagged them. Others will see
any photos they can normally see, including photos hidden from the timeline. Your location tags will be searchable. What's the Problem? What's the problem with all this? There isn't one if you believe that searching for and finding connections is an integral part of the future of social networking. However, if your attitude toward privacy runs a bit more on the old-school side, you can control some of this information, including who can see your current city. Control can include reporting or removing photo tags; deleting photos; and removing location tags. Step 1: Set General Privacy Settings Click on the Settings cogwheel-like icon at the top-right corner of your Facebook page. Use a Web browser on a computer for this -- it's easier. Choose the Privacy Settings link in the dropdown menu, and click on the first Edit link labeled "Who can see your future posts?" Select the "Friends" choice. This setting will limit the viewing of your posts to friends, and not friends of friends. Tip: Your About tab on your Timeline is where your current city is stored. Step 2: Review and Remove Posts and Tagged Items Click on the Use Activity Log link adjacent to
"Review all your posts and things that you're tagged in." It's in the same Settings area you visited in Step 1. Scroll down the page and you'll see chronological activity that relates to you -- either instigated by you or by others. Click on the Edit icon to the right of the activity. In the case of content uploaded by you -- like photos -- choose Delete Photo. Warning: Photos that are untagged but not deleted can still be found by others on Facebook. Hiding a photo from your Timeline doesn't change who can see the photo. Tip: Use the Shared With and On Timeline filters in the Photos section of the Activity Log to see items you've hidden from your timeline but that still might be viewable by others. Use the Report/Remove Tag option within the Edit area to request photos be removed by friends. Choose "I Want this photo removed from Facebook" and a message will be sent to the owner requesting it be removed. Use this option for requesting an un-tag in the Posts You're Tagged In section too. Step 3: Limit Past Posts to Friends Only Click on the link adjacent to "Limit the audience for posts you've shared with friends of friends or Public." Choose to limit old posts to friends -- not friends of friends and not public.

PSL postponed The Pakistan Super League (PSL), the country’s upcoming T20 tournament has been postponed. According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the new schedule for the tournament will be announced later. The PCB press release stated: “The concerns expressed by the stakeholders on tight timelines for submission of bids & leveraging of assets, hold merit." The press release further stated that 80 international players had signed for the PSL auction but the process of acquiring NOCs was still underway and would require time. Furthermore, scheduling conflicts which arose after the PSL dates were announced could result in potential star players not being able to take part. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place from 26 March to 7 April.
Always nice to get match practice before big series: Sachin Tendulkar "It's a big series against Australia. I am sure everyone is looking forward to it. Always nice to get some match practice before a big series," said Tendulkar, after scoring an unbeaten 140 for Ranji champions Mumbai against Rest of India. India will take on the Australians in a four-Test series starting February 22 in Chennai. It is a crucial assignment for the hosts, who lost 1-2 to England in their previous home series last year. Talking about his knock yesterday, which helped him equal Sunil Gavaskar's record of 81 first-class hundreds, Tendulkar said it took him some time to adjust to the pitch. "It was the kind of surface where you needed to
spend a little time to understand the bounce and the pace and the movement off the pitch," Tendulkar said. "I had to take a little bit of time. Although I got a boundary off the second ball, I didn't get deliveries in my hitting zone early on, so I had to wait for my time," he explained. The 39-year-old revealed that he has adjusted his guard slightly. "I keep changing consistently as per the demands. I keep making small changes...I just trusted my instinct. I went how I felt how I needed to go according to the situation. You can't plan a whole innings at same pace," he elaborated.
A morale-boosting century clinched before the much-awaited Test series against Australia, senior Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar today said the ongoing Irani Cup game has given him good match practice ahead of the big clash.
Butt pleads to play again as appeal looms Salman Butt, the former Pakistan captain, has asked for a chance to resume his playing career as he prepares to challenge his ICC ban handed down for spot-fixing during the Lord's Test against England in 2010. Butt, who was banned for 10 years with the possibility of five suspended, and Mohammad Asif, currently serving a seven-year ban with two suspended, will appear at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, over the next two days in a last-ditch attempt to appeal against the bans. In a statement released through his lawyer on Wednesday, Butt said: "It may be easy for some people to say that a fiveyear ban from cricket is all right but what they don't realise is that for a sportsman like me this is like a lifetime ban," he said in a statement issued by his solicitors this afternoon. "Cricket is my life and every single day that has passed has been so painful because I have not been able to play. All I want is an opportunity to get back into cricket whilst I am still
young and I can still play well." Asif's hearing is scheduled for Thursday and Butt's for Friday. Unlike criminal trials, CAS hearings are held in private and not open to either the public or media. Lawyers from both parties - the ICC and the player - will present arguments in front of the three-strong arbitrators panel, including the current president of CAS. Butt will be represented by Yasin Patel, a London-based barrister, who was also part of the legal team that fought his case in the UK. "We are appealing the sanctions that were imposed upon us and they should not have been so high," Patel said. It is understood that Asif's arguments will be similar. CAS, which was formed in 1983 to rule on a variety of disputes within sport, is widely regarded as the final point in the appeal process. It cannot reverse the UK court rulings because the criminal proceedings were under UK laws, but it does have the power to reduce or overturn the ICC sanctions as they are part of the appeal system laid down in the ICC anti-cor-
ruption code. If the outcome was an alteration to the bans it is unlikely that there would be a counter-appeal process open to the ICC. No new witnesses or evidence can be produced by the players. It is not yet clear whether the CAS will issue an instant verdict and that will depend on the arguments they have heard and if they are satisfied or if they require more time to study the case. Mohammad Amir, the third player to be caught in the News of the World sting, has decided not to appeal against the five-year ban against him. The ban does not permit the players to take part in any official match - international, domestic or club - until at least September 2015. All three players served time. Butt served seven months of a 30-month prison sentence, Asif was released from Canterbury Prison in Kent on June 3 last year after he served half of a year-long sentence while Amir spent three months in a young offenders' institution after admitting his charge at a pre-trial hearing.
