By

Once it was one of the most beautiful, clean, cultured and peaceful cities of Asia. But unfortunately, you can’t say the same thing about today’s Karachi. After a period of about 13 years I had a chance to visit Karachi during last months of 2012. What I saw there is what I have described in first two paragraphs of this article. But that is not enough. There is more, and much more to say, to describe, to criticize and to cry about the present days and prevailing situation of the city. Right from the day one of my visit and almost through out the period of my stay after that, all I saw and read in news papers and also watched on various TV channels narrated nothing but stories of political and sectarian riots, bomb blasts, target killings, daylight robberies in market places, banks and on buses and mini-buses, even poor vendors and ordinary pedestrians were also not safe. Robbers would stop them at any nook or corner of the street and snatch cash and kinds like mobile phones etc., and would walk away without any fear of counter resistance from any body or even police. In many areas of the city there is also a trend of CHANDA or BHATTA VASOOLI under which workers of certain political or sectarian parties would go from one shopping area to another and collect money from shopkeepers. In return they would be given safety and protection guarantee. In other case they would be threaten of dire consequences and would be punished for ‘not cooperating’ with party workers. One of the many menaces of the city is mess of traffic. All the traffic rules have become phrases of books only and nobody even bothers to abide by any of the traffic rules. Buses, Mini buses, Rickshaws, Taxis, Motor cycles, Bicycles, Horse carts, Donkey carts, Fruit and vegetable sellers, REHDA AND PATHARA WALAS and

Why once upon a time! It is still there with the same name KARACHI. But that Karachi which was a little more than a quarter of century ago is no more there

even pedestrians- none of them would care for any outcome and would keep running, walking and doing their business. Tragedy of the situation is that incidents of serious and fatal traffic accidents have become a matter of daily routine and yet nobody would take any serious notice of it. Cost of living too has gone sky-high. All items of day to day necessities are available at prices nearly five to six fold high than yester years. House and apartment rents, maintenance charges, water, electricity, tuition fees, transport expenses, medicines, doctors’ fees, hospital charges…. any thing you name- is costly and much beyond the capacity of majority of citizens. Load shedding, water shortage, heaps of dirt and over-flow of gutters makes life more merciful. Strike calls and ‘Tala-bandhis’ have too become parts of life in the city which results in loss of wages for ordinary people. Agony of the situation is that there is nothing like administration at any high or low level in the city. Those who are at the helm of affairs are simply doing what ever they can to save their seats, status and to make their ends meet. You simply can not think about getting any work done in any Government, semi-government offices,

corporations, police departments etc., without first warming their palms. Nobody seems working for benefit of common man. Boasting? Of course it is there, but nothing more than that. Promises- of course are given but never cared to keep them. A journalist friend of mine while criticizing said: They give us promises, means they haven’t kept it with them. What remains with them to keep when they have given it to you already?! And during one of those days I was sitting in the office of my journalist friend, sipping a cup of tea and overseeing through a news paper. Watching me just turning pages he drew my attention to a news item and said: Read this item and you will find something to laugh about It was about the historical remains of world-famous Moen-Jo-Daro. It said that the Government has earmarked a plan costing millions of Rupees under which suitable work will be undertaken to preserve and protect the remains of Moen-Jo-Daro and for maintenance of the historical site. I read it and that really made me laugh too! ‘Isn’t it funny?’ He said and added,’ Our Government is going to spend millions of rupees on a plan to save Moen-Jo-Daro but no body is coming out with any plan to save Karachi from turning into Moen-Jo-Daro’ ‘Oh that…?’ I said: But I think government does have a plan for Karachi to undertake after some years’ ‘How’? ‘It is simple; look the Government’s plan at hand is to preserve ruins of Moen-Jo-Daro. Their next plan could be to save ruins of Karachi’. But first, let them turn Karachi into another Moen-Jo-Daro’ It was not funny but still we could not help but laugh over it.

Dike allegedly punched the man several times and Taveras pointed a shotgun at the man, court records show. Dike then took a $1 bill he found in the man's pockets, the Chronicle reported.

Boy, 4, shoots self with father's gun HOUSTON, (UPI):- A Houston toddler accidentally shot and killed himself with his father's stolen gun, police said. Jaiden Pratt, 4, was napping on the couch with his father, Marquiez Pratt, Sunday morning when the child awoke and grabbed a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun left nearby. The gun went off, striking the boy in the stomach, Houston police Sgt. Brian Harris said. Police and paramedics responded when neighbors heard the shot and reported it. When they arrived, they found Pratt in a T-shirt and boxers, on the lawn of his apartment complex, holding

the bleeding child. Attempts to revive the boy were unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the scene, the Houston Chronicle said. Inside the apartment, police found marijuana, crack cocaine and scales, and a check of the gun's serial number found it had been reported stolen in a 2011 burglary. It was unknown how Pratt acquired the weapon. "This is not a case of a responsible homeowner having a weapon for protection," Harris said. Pratt faces charges of endangering a child and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, Houston police spokesman

John Cannon said. Pratt may also be charged with making a firearm accessible to a minor, but under Texas law such a charge cannot be filed until seven days after the child is buried. Harris described Pratt as extremely remorseful, telling officers as he sat on the lawn -- still in his underwear and a shirt soaked in his son's blood -- he "messed up." "He's in mourning. He's in pain and feels a lot of self guilt," Harris said. "Despite the choices he made and the lifestyle he was leading, it doesn't take away the love a father has for a son."

HOUSTON, (UPI):NASA confirmed it lost direct contact with the International Space Station for about 3 hours Tuesday morning due to equipment failure. Communication between the space agency and the ISS were lost at 9:45 a.m. EST as controllers at the Johnson Space Center in Houston were sending a software update to the space station, SPACE.com reported. NASA said the software update was not a cause of the problem, rather a main data relay system on the ISS malfunctioned. "Mission Control Houston was able to communicate with the crew as the space station flew over Russian ground stations before 11 a.m. EST and instructed the crew to connect a backup computer to begin the process of restoring communications," NASA officials explained. However, despite switching to a backup the station was still unable to communicate with the satellite network that serves as the outpost's link to the control center in Houston.

'Game of Thrones' to screen at Texas A&M COLLEGE STATION, Texas, (UPI):- Texas A&M University says it is planning an advance screening of the Season 3 premiere of HBO's award-winning fantasy series, "Game of Thrones." The program will feature a seminar and brief question-and-answer period with George R.R. Martin, the author of the best-selling book series "A Song of Ice and Fire," on which the TV show is based. Due to the nature of the violent and sexual content of "Game of Thrones," viewer discretion is advised. A brief intermission is planned to allow guests the opportunity to stay or leave following Martin's lecture. No one under the age of 17 will be permitted at the screening, the university said. The third season is to begin on HBO March 31.

LAHORE - Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Nawaz Sharif on Sunday said the split between the MQM and PPP was another drama ahead of the coming polls, adding that he was not sure if the separation was real or fake. Talking to reporters at the residence of a PML-N office-bearer, Nawaz said the move could be a drama aimed at bringing a caretaker Sindh chief minister of their choice. The PML-N chief said that he could not tolerate hypocrisy and urged the PPP to stop politics of hypocrisy in Sindh. He said the PPP distributed sweets following the promulgation of Local Bodies Bill, then annulled it and again distributed sweets. “They should tell what is real and what is not,” he added. “There are no high moral grounds in politics

anymore.” Regarding the MQM, he said after being in alliance for four years and eleven months with the PPP, its separation was not understandable. “The MQM has quit the government only 15 days ahead of the end of its tenure and its opting for the opposition at this stage is a riddle for me,” he said. “All will be clear after the installation of a caretaker set-up,” he opined. To a question, Nawaz said all those desirous of party tickets were being scrutinised under Articles 62, 63 of the constitution. He said more than half of the scrutiny would be done through forms, while the rest would be carried out by the ECP. “We expelled a member of parliament after he was caught cheat-

ISLAMABAD - He was addressing the concluding session of the National Conference on Interfaith Harmony titled "Living together with diversity-Interfaith and inter-cultural dialogue" in Islamabad on Friday. The president said: “We believe in tolerant Islam and have to counter those who believe in hate. We have been pleading to the world that the way the issue of terrorism is being addressed would not lead us to the win. There is need for adopting approach of peace and reconciliation.” He said that over three decades of war could not brought peace in Afghanistan and Pakistan was worst affected by it. He added: “There was time when no one in Pakistan could imagine blowing himself up as Islam is against suicide. People at that time lived in peace and there were no sectarian issues but global politics changed the situation when religion was used for fanning war.” He said there was a need for adopting the approach of peace and reconciliation to eliminate the menace of extremism and terrorism. President Zardari said the world has not yet fully realised the dangerous consequences of using religion and faith as a weapon of war. He said after witnessing the dire consequences of using religion as a tool to win wars, the world cannot afford to allow anyone use the religion for their vested interests. Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar while giving details said the president in his speech recalled the prescient words of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto during a conversation with George Bush when she had said that a veritable Frankenstein was being created to defeat the rival ideology. The spokesperson said the president during his speech dilated upon how militants were created and nurtured by the international community to defeat a rival ideology and the same militants had turned on its creators as was predicted by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. The president said it was disturbing to see that the values of tolerance and harmony were fast eroding during present times.

ing his party. Explaining his party’s votes to the prime minister, Nawaz clarified that the votes were not given for the love of the PPP, but for the country. He said the PPP could have done a lot in the past five years, but it failed to do anything for the masses and the country. Source: PT

He said the extremists have destroyed the peace in the name of religion. He said extremism was not confined to any one religion or country. It was growing the world over and at an alarming trend. Recalling his meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in the UAE in January 2010, the president said that he had appealed to UN Secretary General that the United Nations should work out special plans for promoting cultural and religious harmony. He said he made that appeal because we believe that rationality and sanity were fast eroding. "We must act before rationality is completely destroyed," the president continued. The president said that Pakistan fully supports the universal values of tolerance and harmony promoted by the UN. That is why, he said, we urge the UN to take practical steps for promoting religious harmony and tolerance. The president said the values of tolerance and harmony could not be divided into Islamic or Christian. Efforts for promotion of tolerance and harmony must be across the religious and geographical divides. "We must guard against making exceptions and selectivity. Exceptions and selectivity will not promote harmony. If anything, it will only further increase it," he said. Advisor to Prime Minister on National Harmony Dr Paul Bhatti said since its inception in 2011‚ the Ministry of National Harmony took several important steps to promote harmony and interfaith dialogue. He said that over 4,000 scholarships have been given to students hailing from poor families and seats of minorities have been increased in national and provincial assemblies. He said that no religion teaches violence or extremism and we should live together peacefully as citizen of Pakistan as envisioned by Quaide-Azam. Justice (r) Rana Bhagwan Das said ‘we can address the challenge of extremism and terrorism through unity and tolerance and there is need to take practical steps to promote inter-faith harmony’. PM resolves to go ahead with Iran gas plan

Malik threatens direct anti-terror action in Punjab

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that the federal government will take action by its own if Punjab government failed to hunt down terrorists in the province ISLAMABAD - Malik said the top leadership of Lashkar-e-Jhanjvi (LeJ), the anti-Shia militant group that claimed the last Saturday’s deadly attack in Quetta’s Hazara Town, was based in Punjab. “Terrorists are having havens in Punjab,” he said, adding that greater steps were required to nab the violence mongers and terrorists in that province. Talking to the media after 25th passing out parade of police recruits at Police Lines in Islamabad on Saturday, he however appreciated detainment of LeJ leader Malik Ishaq by Punjab government while urging the provincial administration for the launch of criminal cases against him. Upon being asked about the purposed talks between the government and the Taliban, the minister repeated his invitation to the TTP (Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan) for negotiations saying that if Taliban announce their negotiating team, ‘we are ready for

talks’. But Malik said the Taliban will have to demonstrate seriousness and “they first have to surrender their weapons”. He said that it seems when Taliban feel they are losing ground they come up with the offer of dialogue. Taliban have rejected calls for laying down arms and their spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, said that ceasefire could be on the agenda if the talks are started. To a question, Malik said that Pakistan would formally request Interpol to gain custody of Maulvi Faqir Muhammad, who was captured by Afghanistan at the Pak-Afghan border. The minister said Faqir was wanted in different cases of terrorism and “we want his deportation to Pakistan so that action could be initiated against him”. Recently Pakistan had asked the Afghan government for the handover of Faqir but Afghan Foreign Ministry refused it saying there is no bilateral agreement for ex-

change of prisoners. Moreover, Afghanistan says that Pakistan has also refused to hand over the Afghan Taliban prisoners to the country when Afghan authorities asked for their return at a London summit this month. Faqir, who had been chief of Taliban in Bajaur tribal region, had fled to Afghanistan after the 2008-2009 military operation in his area, Pakistani officials say. He was suspected to be behind attacks on Pakistan forces in Bajaur and attacks on Pakistani border posts from Afghan soil. The Taliban leadership had removed him as deputy of the group after reports that he was involved in unauthorised talks with the government. Earlier addressing the participants of passing out parade the interior minister said Pakistan is passing through a critical phase and facing challenges of extremism and terrorism. He said the PPP government soon after assuming

power decided to enhance the capacity and capability of law enforcement agencies. He said the nation knows that the elements plotting to destabilize Pakistan by conducting terrorism in Karachi‚ Peshawar and Quetta have failed. He expressed the hope that the nation would overcome the terrorism with the help of law enforcing agencies. He said Pakistan lies at the crossroads of Central and South Asia and due to its geostrategic importance and nuclear status‚ it has become a target of foreign interests that want to harm it. The minister said the government decided to give representation to Baloch people in all departments and the induction of Baloch youth in Islamabad Police as part of Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan is reaffirmation of this commitment. He urged the Baloch youth on mountains to come down and become part of mainstream life. Source: PT

MQM demands opposition benches for its elected members

KARACHI: The Rabita (coordination) Committee of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has said that resignations of its ministers and advisors should be accepted immediately. In a statement issued here on Saturday, the party also called for the issuance of notification of the MQM’s leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly.

MQM, on Feb 16, had decided to quit the federal and provincial governments in protest against what it described as ‘negative attitude’ of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Later on, several leaders of the party including Dr Farooq Sattar and Raza Haroon hurled serious accusations against the PPP of patronising ‘criminals and terrorists’ and not imple-

menting the Sindh People’s Local Government Act, 2012, and creating hindrance in work of MQM ministers. The statement issued on Saturday said that all of the federal and provincial ministers and advisors of the MQM had already tendered their resignations and applications had been submitted for the allotment of opposition benches. HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that Pakistan is keen to go ahead with the proposed gas pipeline project with Iran in order to overcome its energy crisis. Talking to journalists at the Government College, Hyderabad, during a visit to his alma mater, he said: “Pakistan is facing a serious energy crisis and we want to end it as soon as possible.” He, however, avoided commenting specifically on a statement by a US State Department spokeswoman warning Pakistan of sanctions if it went ahead with the Iran gas pipeline project. “We believe there are better, more secure and more efficient ways for Pakistan to get its power. We’ve made clear to countries around the world, including Pakistan, that we believe it’s in their interest to avoid activities that could be prohibited by UN sanctions or that could be ‘sanctionable’ under US law,” the spokeswoman had warned Islamabad on Friday. The prime minister said the energy crisis had become a big burden on the national economy. He said everyone knew that India had been part of the project in the past. Raja Pervez Ashraf announced a grant of Rs500 million for upgrading, repair and renovation of the college building. He said the faculty’s demand for upgrading the college to university level would be considered at a later stage. The prime minister said the country was facing existential challenges like terrorism, lawlessness and price hike that could only be tackled by a united nation and strengthening of democracy was necessary for this. India seeks more local arms production Indian Defense Minister A. K. Antony wants Indian industry to produce more armaments (UPI) NEW DELHI: For decades India has been forced to import defense materials, seeing the nation emerge as the world's single largest national arms importer due to a lack of a comprehensive armaments industry. However, immense defense contracts have resulted in a number of embarrassing, high-profile corruption scandals involving potential arms contracts. Seeking to improve the situation, Antony is assembling a "road map" for increasing in "a national mission-mode" manner India's weaponry production base. Antony's mission has been affected by numerous recent armaments scandals, most recently a bribery issue engulfing a government contract with AgustaWestland for 12 VVIP helicopters, The Times of India reported. India's lack of a national armaments industry, or defense industrial base means that, unlike China, New Delhi is forced to import more than 60 percent of its military hardware and software, increasing national vulnerability in times of emergency should resupply lines be interrupted. Antony on Wednesday told seminar participants in New Delhi that it was "essential" for India to speed up developing an indigenous armaments sector to eliminate corruption from the nation's defense sector.

The neighbouring country has not been successful in wag-

ing a war against India in the last few decades, so it has resorted to proxy war. There is definitely our neighbour's hand behind such incidents," Advani told reporters during a private visit in Mumbai. Israel gearing up for more violence JERUSALEM, (UPI):- Israel security forces were on high alert Sunday amid fears West Bank clashes would escalate after the death of a Palestinian prisoner in an Israeli jail. Clashes in the West Bank between protesting Palestinians and Israeli security forces erupted in the Hebron area Sunday morning and 4,500 Palestinian security prisoners incarcerated in Israel threatened a one-day hunger strike to protest the death of Arafat Jaradat, 30, who died Saturday in an Israeli prison. Initial reports said Jaradat, who was not one of the hunger-strikers, died of heart failure. Violence was reported Sunday in Jaradat's

village of Sair and other areas around Hebron, Israel Radio said. Unrest escalated in the West Bank and areas of east Jerusalem last week with Palestinians demanding the release of four prisoners on hunger strikes in Israeli jails. Jaradat's death Saturday added further fuel to an already tense situation, Israeli military officials said. Israeli Arab Knesset members participated in a protest march in Nazareth. A statement released by the Israel Security Agency, Shin Bet, Sunday said an investigation into Jaradat's death was under way. Jaradat was arrested last Monday for allegedly throw-

ing stones at Israeli vehicles on West Bank highways, the Shin Bet said. Doctors examined him a number of times and no medical problems were discovered. However, reports said he went to his cell after eating his midday meal Saturday, saying he did not feel well. Medics summoned to his cell attempted to resuscitate him, to no avail. Issa Qaraqi, the Palestinian minister for prisoner affairs, accused Israel of torturing Jeradat, The Jerusalem Post said. Qaraqi said an autopsy would be conducted in the presence of a Palestinian coroner, a member of Jaradat's family and his lawyer, Israel Radio said.

28 fans injured in fiery Daytona crash At least 28 fans were hurt, including two critically, by flying debris from a crash at a NASCAR race Saturday at Daytona International Speedway, medics say DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (UPI): Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood told the Los Angeles Times 14 of the injured were hospitalized and 14 others were treated at the Florida track following the fiery crash in the final lap of the Nationwide Series event. Of the seven of victims admitted to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, two were in critical condition, including a child, hospital spokesman Byron Cogdell told USA Today. The adult in critical condition was suffering from head trauma,

he added. Daytona Beach Police Public Information Officer Jimmie Flynt told the newspaper six other victims were taken to Halifax Urgent Care in Port Orange for minor injuries. One person went to Florida Memorial Hospital for minor injuries, he said. The fiery wreck happened during the final turn of the race, when Kyle Larson's car flew into a catch fence that divides the track

from the seats. The front end of Larson's car broke into pieces, with parts of it piercing the fence. Some of the debris hit a spectator 45 rows up in the stands while other car parts -- included a tire -- also flew into the stands, the Sentinel reported. Larson walked away from the crash and no other drivers were reported injured.

Fans could be seen lying down in the grandstand area after the crash. Video showed fans being placed stretchers, with one woman's leg bleeding as she was carried away. "You've been able to see and explain," NASCAR President Mike Helton told ESPN. "There was some intrusion into the fence and there were plenty of emergency worker ready to go and jumped right into it quickly." Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's senior vice president for racing operations, told the Times the damage to the fence should be repaired in time for Sunday's Daytona 500 Sprint Cup season opener.

9 93 riders stuck on Dallas zoo monorail DALLAS, (UPI): - Nearly 100 riders found themselves stuck on on the Dallas Zoo monorail when it stalled Saturday afternoon, a fire department official said. KDFW-TV, Dallas, reported the 93 passengers were stuck on the monorail for 30-45 minutes. Zoo officials blamed an electrical malfunction, the TV station said. Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said about 4:45 p.m. local time that all passengers have been successfully removed from the train, The Dallas Morning News reported. Firefighters used five extension ladders to get the passengers to safety from about 20 feet in the air. No injuries were reported.

Thousands protest corruption in Spain MADRID, (UPI): - Tens of thousands of protesters calling themselves the Citizens' Tide flooded Madrid Saturday, angry over unemployment and alleged government corruption. The protest, filled with chants, drum beats and whistles, was noisy but peaceful, The Wall Street Journal said. Many carried signs calling for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to resign amid media reports charging members of his government have accepted cash kickbacks from businesses seeking state contracts. Rajoy has denied the charges but is under official investigation. Saturday's protest was one of the largest since a series in 2011 staged by a group calling itself "the indignant ones." The protests two years ago -- before Rajoy came to power 14 months ago -- were in response to the Socialist government's harsh austerity policies to address the country's mounting national debt. Though Rajoy has said the austerity measures have helped steady an economy on the brink of collapse, the lack of government spending resulted in mass layoffs. Spain's unemployment rate is 26 percent, CNN said.

INTERVIEW

CITY360HOUSTON.COM

Respect The Person By: Nargis Lakhani Mr. Masood Kaiser, as he is popularly known, is Mash Kaiser, the renowned owner of “WORLD FOOD WAREHOUSE: Asian, Middle Eastern, Halal Meat, Kaiser Gourmet Food and Colonal Kabab Factory” at Beechnut, Hwy 6 N. It was difficult to track him down, umpteen phone calls and several changed timings had me finally have him sitting in his cluttered office to talk to the newspaper. So, I started with why was it so difficult to have him create time to give an interview? “Not easy, One Man Show, Biggest warehouse in America and Canada…” such discrete phrases as responses set the tone for further conversation. When I had entered the store (and this was the first time for me) it had a feel like “Sam’s” or “Cosco” but I was surprised by the ‘One Man Show’ phrase and started by asking him as to why it was so; how come he has not created a corporate system yet? Mash says that as a wholesaler in Asain and Middle Eastern food products, wherein he has to import almost 90% of his supplies either from other states or from abroad, his business completely depends on his ‘Buying Power’, ‘Personal Relationships’ and ‘Exploring for Opportunity’. His antennas have to always be up and he has to scent out the best at the most reasonable price for that is what he gives his customers in turn. Customers come to the World Food Warehouse from as far as Kansas city, etc, driving around 17 hours or so, to make bulk purchases for their group of family and friends. Besides, for the desi population of Houston, this is a compulsory stop to stock up on food supplies. Quality is guaranteed and prices are always the most reasonable. Mash personally supervises the procurement of Meat – all types: goat, beef and chicken. Meat is never on sale over here because it is never old; it is always fresh . The farms from where the animals are procured are carefully selected and all of it is 100% halal. He makes no compromises whilst choosing the animals. His constant mantra has been, ‘hard work, never rip off the customer, low prices but high volume’. So how and when did the World Food Warehouse come into existence? Mash went down memory lane all the way back 30 years when he first came to the USA. He left Pakistan because he did not like the unhealthy business politics that he was witnessing all around him. His first store in Arlington was on a 2000sft area with a daily turnover of around $60 . Since Arlington in those days had mostly a student population, the business scope was limited whilst Houston was already

Not The Status

an established city. Hence he took the plunge to set shop here. He had been led to believe that Sugar Land was full of Europeans and so he had decided to cater to the Italian, Greek and the Middle Eastern clientele. Inaugurated on 22nd March 2005 and set up on 59,000sft, this mega warehouse was stocked with food products for the anticipated European clientele. Shockingly, Mr. Masood, realized that Houston had less demand for European based products and had a much better scope for an Indo-Pak sub-continental market. Letting a million dollars go down the drain is not for the chicken hearted, which is what he would have to do if he changed over his store’s entire inventory. Everybody from his home-town, in this case Dallas, jeered him and gossiped about his folly. They challenged that he would soon be closing shop, little realizing that that in itself was helping him stay motivated. “Quit, I will not” said he and relentlessly pushed his way ahead to make the required changes. Changing the almost entire product line from catering to the European to ca-

is your duty; leave defeat or victory to the will of the Almighty. 22nd March 2013, the store will celebrate its 7th year of survival and success. Mash has plans to continue to keep this store in existence but in the near future he is opening a slightly different version at Hillcroft – KGF Cash n Carry (Kaisal Gourmet Food) which will be targeted towards being a wholesale supplier of food requirements to restaurants, small retail stores etc not only for Houston, but more so for the smaller districts around Houston. If that clicks, then he has plans to have a number of them across the USA. What are some of the challenges that he visualizes for his type of businessmen in the near future given the dynamics of the current economy in the US? Mr. Masood is wary about touching on this sensitive subject as he does not want to be dragged into any type of politics around it but he does feel that the policies of the government, instead of becoming more friendly to his type of business are instead getting tougher and tougher which in turn is stifling the growth. He anticipates that stricter import regulations on the one hand, tighter inspections and such measures will end up increasing costs and hence increase in prices. Everything in the food related industry, especially for those who depend on imports, may become more expensive. Masood Kaiser I was curious to know as to who Mash with Ali was preparing to take over his vast businesses? His face turned sad and serious ter to the Asain market was a Herculian task. Photographs that tell a story Ershan Lakhani, 25, is a budding young professional photographer. When you look at the photos clicked by Ershan, you feel like you are looking into the person’s soul via their eyes. How does he do that? Ershan shares that even as a child, when he drew cartoon pics, his mom commented that they looked so alive. He has this special knack. Quiet and reserved, he often comes across as ‘laid back’, ‘stressed out’ and ‘non-communicative’. Yet, those close to him know that he has a heart of gold and always want him to be around. As you can see, his answers are short and crisp yet to the point. Read on to know Ershan a little more and also enjoy looking at some of his pictures. When did you realize that you had a flair for photography? I always loved taking pictures. It didn’t matter what camera I used. Just the feeling of reproducing a memory, a moment in time excited me. What are some of the challenges that you are expecting to find on your way before you become a popular name in the world of photography? The first steps are the hardest. Just creating a brand name is what I’m working on right now and which is challenging.

Do you want to specialize in one area of events or are you comfortable doing all types? As much as I love taking pictures, I love taking pictures at desi events. Weddings, parties, birthdays, etc. I also actively volunteer as a photographer and cover a lot of sports events but they’re not as exciting as parties. Within a frame, when clicking a picture, what’s your point of focus? An expression, a feeling that tells a story. Where do you see yourself five years from now? Working for a magazine, getting paid to travel the world and take pictures. Are you happy with the way your life is going? Life has always served me well and I want to thank God for that. But, I always strive for better. This is how I got this far in photography as well. Even now, I keep saying to myself ‘it can be better,’ and try harder to get better results.

MARCH 1, 2013

He is one of the hottest actors with the best body in B-town. Yes, I am talking about none other than John Abraham, who is currently very busy promoting his upcoming rom-com I, Me Aur Main, wherein he will be seen romancing Chitrangda Singh and Prachi Desai.

It was love at first sight with Priya: John Abraham Instead of the regular interview, the makers of I, Me Aur Mainorganised for a special date with John at a popular fine dining joint in Bandra. John breezed in looking dapper in a blue shirt with beige pants. As he entered, he instructed, "No men and cameras allowed and no questions related to my film." Did he just say NO questions related to my film!!! "I just want to have a normal conversation. You can ask me personal questions but be ready to be questioned by me too", He added. For the next two hours John became a friend, philosopher and relationship advisor. He spoke on various topics including his love life, dealing with controversies, etc. Here is what he had to say on… Working with an all women's team "My team is an all women's team. I work only with women as I feel they are more loyal, hardworking and comprehensive. I know that they generally won't take a shortcut. They are more sincere. Women handle my production, my office and my life." Being grounded "I know actors who are acting 24 hours a day. If my behaviour in public is consistent with my behaviour with my friends that means I have found my personal space, then I only have to be different when I go on sets to play a certain role. But if an actor takes that larger than life image too seriously and comes home with that, then that is a problem. I am still rooted because I have my family and school friends who keep me grounded. But there are actors who are living in the air. They are not bad people, in fact they are wonderful, but they are stuck in a trap. If an actor has a certain image then he has to maintain that image and have that lifestyle. This becomes a regiment. The actor becomes more guarded and starts living in isolation of his own world. Female actresses get into this trap far more."

Actor Saif Ali Khan says although his character in new film "Bullet Raja" wears nasty clothes, he will still try to make him look cool in them. "I think it is one of the most fun things when you do a role, try and find the look for the character. So 'Bullet Raja' is kind of like this (points to stubble) but a little, sort of wears pretty big and nasty clothes but hopefully we'll make it look kind of cool. That's the idea, nylon shirts and white pants and white shoes," the 42-year-old said here during a photo shoot for Image sunglasses. Meanwhile, Saif believes that to have a certain image can harm an actor's prospects in the industry but, nevertheless, it is still important. "I don't know how important is it for an actor to have an image because an image can sometimes stereotype you. I think the less you know about an actor, the better. An actor should just actually have an image of being a good actor," Saif said. "But there are many other aspects to an actor's income, like magazine covers, forming some kind of, you being a brand ambassador and people investing in you. But as an actor I don't think it's very important," he added. Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, "Bullet Raja" also stars Sonakshi Sinha.

Dealing with Controversies "When I came into the industry, they said that John Abraham is a model and models can't act. He is so wooden. Now there are two ways to go about this, one is that you get very angry and say 'How dare they say that!', and the other is that you say 'Theek hai. What is said about me is said about me. I have to work and prove myself and I have to do better.' People have realized over a period of time that I am a no nonsense person and there is no point in taking a panga with me as I am not going to react, so they just let me do my work. Aditya Chopra once told me 'John you are the smartest because you have chosen all the best films in your career.' When I asked him which films he was talking about, he said those are all your films which have failed like Water, No Smoking, Kabul Express and Zinda. These are films that have not worked but you have made it very clear to your audience that you are willing to take the risk by doing offbeat roles too. I will do a Housefull 2 and Race 2 but along with that I will also do a No Smoking 2, that is how I like it." Past Relationships "I don't speak negative about my past relationships. I don't pay attention to what is written. After a while, it stops affecting you." Break ups "For each relationship and each person the breaking point is different. There are some people who can tolerate and hold on forever. Especially women, they can somehow hold on and I really admire that about them. The problem now days is that we don't spend enough time with our loved ones. How difficult is it to make a relationship work? A girl just wants her man to give her a hug and say 'I love you'." On his girlfriend Priya "I am in a very happy phase now because the person my life is very supportive. I met her through

a common friend. There was a lot of attraction. It was pretty much love at first sight. She is very smart and mature. If she calls me at 11:30 in the night and I am caught up with something or am tired, she asks me to take rest and go to sleep once I am done with work. This kind of support is very rare. She gives me space and I give her space. I feel I am blessed and very fortunate. Ours is a long distance relationship. She is currently doing her two-year full time MBA course at London Business School. I want her to study very hard so that may be one day I can retire and relax (laughs)." Long distant relationships "Long distance relationships are a bigger challenge. The most important thing in a long distant relationship is to be loyal. I am one of those men who are looking for something deeper and more emotional. I really believe that sex is highly overrated. Most men measure their self worth on the amount of money they have and the size of their… shoes.( laughs)" Loyalty "It is very important to be loyal in a relationship. Loyalty, to me, means being with the one person that you are in love with. You should be committed to her and be completed devoted to her. You need to give each other their space but that does not mean that you cheat." Being Possessive "I am not possessive at all. I think I have grown out of it. In college, I was possessive about my girlfriend, but my girlfriend was more possessive about me. I don't think anyone likes a possessive partner." Settling Down "As and when I get a break, I would like to get married."

You don’t see someone who is a little fresh and younger featuring in such genre, this was one factor that really excited me as it would be something new for me as well as audience” Whats further exciting for Shahid is that everyone who has done south movies before, were all from the big lead and were senior celebrities, Shahid Kapoor will however be the youngest kid on the block.

Farah can't find her fourth man! After John Abraham and Dev Patel, buzz is that Ayushmann has turned down her film 'Happy New Year' Farah Khan's upcoming film seems to be competing in an obstacle race. After roping in Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan, the choreographer-turned-director looks to be meeting a dead end every time when it comes to casting the fourth actor for her film.

With youth centric cine delight Kai Po Che! making it to the BO, this not for the first time that our cine biggies have banked upon the charm of youth power to dish out a mesmerizing cine delight Be it "Dil Chahata Hai", "Rock On!!" or "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" every time the tryst of our cine sorcerers have resulted in the making of some of the most mesmerizing cine sagas focusing the youth. But before you start making you perceptions about Kai Po Che! on the basis of your previous rendezvous with earlier made youth centric cine delights, let me tell you that Kai Po Che! is altogether different in its approach. With no fairy world like college campuses, romantic hook-ups and weepy break-ups, and obtruded song sequences, Kai Po Che! is a cine delight which reintroduces you to the real life. Synopsis Before getting into the length and breadth the movie, let me tell you that, Kai Po Che! is a triumphant yell in Gujarati uttered when flying kites are cut. Conspicuously, being inspired from ace novelist Chetan Bhagat's Best Selling novel "3 Mistakes of My Life", Kai Po Che! is a touching tale of three best friends who are young, ambitious, thoroughly youth full in their attitude who want to make it big in their lives. As the tale rolls ahead, the story unfurls nearly all the spices of an Indian common man's life. Be it obsession for cricket, meddling of politics and religion in his life or the

There are more than 300 different ways a film based on the killing of Osama Bin Laden could have slipped up factually, narratively and aesthetically It is a testament to the exceptional directing prowess of Katherine Bigelow that Zero Dark Thirty stands as such a gripping and thoroughly detailed chronicle of the events surrounding the hunt for OBL. It's not just a storytelling triumph but also a major cinematic achievement. The biggest strength of the film, in fact, is how unglamourous it is. Bigelow de-glamourises and de-Hollywoodises the story with a crankshaft. This is not an action movie as much as it is a stunning exercise in character and plot development. Neither is there any chest thumping American sloganeering nor is the film an Army recruiting commercial. And unlike most Hollywood movies, Bigelow's film is written around a strong female character, one that is played to searing detail and strength by the lovely Jessica Chastain. Nitpicking in Zero Dark Thirty would be nothing but moaning. One apparent nadir of Courtesy: Mid-Day.com

natural catastrophe, everything pertaining to India's "Aam Aadmi" has been magnificently crafted together in Kai Po Che! to mesmerize the masses. Story With a contour of Gujrat and Gujrati culture around it, Kai Po Che! is story of three friends Ishaan (Sushannt Sing Rajput), Govind (Rajkumar Yadav ) and Omi (Amit Sadh) who inspite of being on diverse aspiration spectrum are tied to each other with a bond of companionship. In order to touch the horizons of their aspiration the trio decides to make a mark for themselves by venturing into a business of their own. And in the country where besides four religions "Cricket too enjoys the status of a religion", what else could be better than starting a Cricket academy. Hence the trio decides to start a cricket training academy with an intent of producing sporting legends for the country. Ignorant about destiny's will they go ahead with their dream plan, but soon after luck get cruel to the three friends, whose equations with each other are thrown into severe turmoil by Gujrat earthquake and calamitous event of the Godhra riots. From there destiny takes over and start juggling with the lives of Ishaan, Govind and Omi, and pushes their grand plan of creating cricket legends off the rail.

the film is the underdeveloped SEAL characters. That couldn't be helped because the SEAL Team Six personnel are nameless and faceless ghosts and developing those characters would have felt tacked on. Naturally it is impossible to squeeze in all the details in one movie, only a full-blown miniseries would accomplish that feat. The actors (Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt) who play the Seals manage to leave a mark despite having very brief roles and spending majority of the time under the helmets. The supporting cast of CIA operatives including Edgar Ramirez, Kyle Chandler, Stephan Dillane and Jennifer Ehle are written to perfection. And as a result of the insane amount of data crammed in those two and half hours, Zero Dark Thirty whizzes by like a bullet. You know how the film is going to end, yet nothing can prepare you for the blistering final 20 minutes at the Abbotabad compound. Bigelow times the raid to stunning specifics, matching its runtime to the actual raid, superbly detailing the military tactics, without selling out and adding in loud gunfire and Call of Duty style flashbangs.

Script With Chetan Bhagat's best selling novel "3 Mistakes of My Life" at its roots and audience being well acquainted with the tale, everything to be said about the script of Kai Po Che! is going to be too meagre, to describe the brilliance the tale. With a magnificent onset set against the the backdrop of friendship, fun and quirkiness, narration beautifully transits into a social commentary. Be it the aspirations, emotional aspect, natural catastrophe or communal disharmony every perspective knitted in the Kai Po Che! contributes magnificently to the flow of this otherwise captivating narration. Though some may feel that after so many cine flicks being knitted around the core of youth, cricket and communal issues what new Kai Po Che! is going to offer, but truly speaking the script of the movie is a standalone tale which will definitely make a space for itself in the psyche of masses. In nut shell showcasing some of the harsher realities of life, the narration of Kai Po Che! compels you to assimilate with it. Screenplay Well as far as screenplay of Kai Po Che! is concerned then for that director Abhishek Kapoor deserves a huge bunch of accolades for doing an absolute justice to this brilliant tale penned down by Chetan Bhagat. Try not to make things more complicated than they need to be on Monday and Tuesday, or you could end up in an abstract argument about irrelevant hypothetical details. The easy way is the right way. Wednesday and Thursday, minor situations graduate into biggerthan-they-need-to-be challenges without any doing on your part. Patience is the only solution. Well, patience and perhaps the wisdom of a certain wise woman. This weekend, freed from the obstacles of family, you find yourself soaring like a strong bird toward the bright sun ... in the middle of winter.

Cancer 6/22 - 7/22

Just say no on Monday and Tuesday -- to someone dumping, er, delegating, an undue amount of work to you or to those that would bring negativity to your personal life. It's no crisis; just be diplomatic but firm. The limits you set will help define your world, and around Wednesday and Thursday, you'll want keep an eye out for the stuff that helps expand it. Something or someone deserves a big 'yes!' now -- though saying 'maybe' might make matters even more interesting! Then sometime Friday or over the weekend, compare a logical view with an emotionally based one; then consider splitting the difference.

Libra

9/23 - 10/22 Sync up your heart and your mind on Monday and Tuesday, and there's very little you can't do. With your natural knack for balance, aligning intellect and ideals comes easy for you. Your work and your love life especially stand to benefit! If you find yourself out of sorts around Wednesday or Thursday, don't wallow. What's the real source of your frustration or anxiety? Itemize it and sort through it, and on Friday and over the weekend, the stars will have much better stuff in store. Hint: For best results, try doing something that you normally wouldn't.

Capricorn 12/22 - 1/19

Look to the future on Monday and Tuesday, especially if the present isn't exactly how you want it to be. What concrete steps can you take, and what and who in your life can provide the support you need? Accept a lesson! And the immediate future brings excellent energy, with all sorts of potential in the stars for you, around Wednesday and Thursday. Your messages get through now, perhaps because they're ringing very true. On Friday and over the weekend, if you've got the inkling to check someone or something out, why not do it? Don't forget to follow your heart as well as the plan!

Horoscope Taurus 4/20 - 5/20

It's not like you to be thinking so many steps ahead of your present situation. Picturing the future while simultaneously existing in the here and now is giving you vertigo. Perhaps you need to dial back a bit. Just take things one at a time. Wednesday and Thursday, you find a pace more befitting your mood. Plus, you're around people who know you -- and your moods -- very well, which is endlessly comforting. Friday through Sunday, a brush with an authority figure leaves you wishing for a world full of smarter, happier people, but there's little need to get high and mighty.

Leo

7/23 - 8/22

Call it cabin fever -- you're on fire on Monday and Tuesday, if the stars have their say, and some sweet lovin' just might be part of this not-at-all-dreadful disease. Anyone or anything small-time isn't worth your effort now. But be ready to be a little more meek around Wednesday and Thursday, when attentive charm will work a lot better than aggro agenda-pushing. Allowing things to unfold -- letting life guide you and vice-versa -- is a good policy on Friday and over the weekend, too, particularly when it comes to one-on-one interactions. Be bold enough to just see what happens!

Scorpio 10/23 - 11/21

What's ultimately most important to you? It may seem like heavy stuff, but on Monday and Tuesday even the little things you do should be informed by your own personal philosophy. Then around Wednesday and Thursday, you've got a real way with bringing people together, whether it's brokering a compromise at work, or playing Cupid in your off hours. Hook yourself up, too! And a shift in your personal life or home is in the stars on Friday and over the weekend; you've got the power to make it positive.

Aquarius 1/20 - 2/18

When Noodle gets soft then filter it out,put cold water in it and again rinse it. Put 1 tbsp oil in it. Now take another cooking bowl add oil in it, Put onion and fry until it got golden

You don't have to be a follower to be a part of a community. As this week begins, the give and take of those who share your outlook (and sometimes challenge it!) is invaluable. In fact, the fresh perspective you get will stand you in very good stead around Wednesday and Thursday when the stars will present you with a challenge. Hint: This may be more about giving in than resisting. Then on Friday and over the weekend, a very positive kind of charge is in the air. Share of your vision and of yourself -- others find you even more magnetic than usual!

paste and chicken in it Cook until the chicken’s water got evaporated. Add vegetables, chicken cubes, soya sauce, vinegar, salt, black and white pepper, flour, sugar and cook it for 5 more minutes. After 5 minutes add noodles in it and mix it well. In the last add bean sprout n sesame oil. Your Chicken Chowmein is ready to serve.

Gemini 5/21 - 6/21

Partner up for added power on Monday and Tuesday. Whether it's working together or a more interpersonal thing, life's richer and more fun when there's more than one. Relationships, old and new, are highlighted now, too! Around Wednesday and Thursday, though, you may want to fly solo. Time spent alone, whether active or just spent relaxing and thinking, helps you get centered -- you may even see a certain situation in a new light. Then, the bonus brainpower the stars send on Friday and over the weekend will assist with illuminating the next steps on your life -- and maybe love -- path. Get going!

Virgo

8/23 - 9/22 You might just feel like laying low on Monday and Tuesday, and going with the flow is not a bad M.O. right now. But don't ignore life's tensions -- stick with your exercise regimen and work right through them. Speaking of work, if you've been putting in the effort, more opportunities (and maybe some pretty sweet results) are on the way around Wednesday and Thursday. This doesn't just mean on the job, either; big personal progress is possible, too. Then, on Friday and over the weekend, a really revolutionary idea is in the air. Get ready!

Sagittarius 11/22 - 12/21

If what you're contemplating seems difficult on Monday and Tuesday, it's likely just the step you oughta take. No guts, no glory -- and the universe has got your back now! Then around Wednesday and Thursday, money is highlighted -- like it or not. How are you handling yours? Hint: It should play a supporting role, not steal the show. If it's running your life, it's time to take back control. Plan to make Friday and this weekend about ideas and people, not things. Those who are able get it will love where you're at. Bring up big topics. Invite them in!

Pisces 2/19 - 3/20

Your instinct may be to talk it through on Monday and Tuesday, but sometimes it's best to let it rest. When in doubt, listening very carefully to what they're saying offers a cue. Around Wednesday and Thursday, you'll be able to see links and patterns with a fresh clarity. If you've been trying to wrap your mind around something, now's the time to revisit it -and to help someone else understand it, too. And when you finish something up on Friday or over the weekend, allow for some downtime. That's when another really interesting idea will occur to you!

Sony PlayStation 4 console unveiled Sony Corp unveiled PlayStation 4 (PS4), its first video game console in seven years on Wednesday that will let users stream and play video games hosted on servers, hoping the move will help stem user losses, pre-empt the next version of Microsoft's Xbox and propel it back to the top of the videogame hardware industry. The company revealed its PlayStation 4 console, which will succeed the PlayStation 3, at a flashy event in New York with game developers like Ubisoft and Activision Blizzard in attendance. Sony said the PS4 console would be available for the holiday 2013 season. It did not immediately disclose pricing. The PS4 console will be up against the next version of the industry-leading Xbox console, which is expected later this summer. The controller on the new console dubbed "DualShock 4" will have a touch pad, Mark Cerny, lead system architect on PlayStation 4, said. Sony purchased US cloud-based

gaming company Gaikai for $380 million in July. Using that technology, the new console will offer a cloud-gaming service, the company said. The 8GB PlayStation 4, which has been in development for the last five years, can also instantly stream game content from the console to Sony's handheld PlayStation Vita through a feature called "Remote

Play," the company said. Sony has also revamped the user interface on the new PS4 console that keeps tabs on user preferences and added social networking features. Sony's announcement comes amid industry speculation that Microsoft is set to unveil the successor to its Xbox 360 later this summer.

The market-leading Xbox 360 beats the seven-year-old PlayStation 3's online network with features such as voice commands on interactive gaming and superior connectivity to smartphones and tablets. Gaining a lead over Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo Co Ltd's new Wii U could help Sony revive an electronics business hurt by a dearth of hit gadgets, a collapse in TV sales and the convergence of consumer interest around tablets and smartphones built by rivals Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. Tablets and smartphones already account for around 10 percent of the $80 billion gaming market. Those mobile devices, analysts predict, will within a few years be as powerful as the current slew of game-only consoles. After six years, Sony PlayStation sales are just shy of Xbox's 67 million installed base and well behind the 100 million units of Wii sold by Nintendo, according to analysts. Source: TNW

Yahoo's New Home Page Goes for Lean, Clean Look CEO Marissa Mayer has placed another piece in the puzzle that's beginning to reveal Yahoo's new identity a redesigned home page that offers users a calm welcome instead of shouting advertising. The new look doesn't prompt gasps of wonder, but it does evoke essence of Google, which seems to be the fragrance Mayer is spreading throughout the Sunnyvale campus Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is putting her money -- or rather her shareholders' money -- where her mouth is. Mayer has been proclaiming Yahoo's mission of becoming a must-visit daily portal equally accessible via PCs and mobile devices. To that end, the company unveiled a redesign of its website on Wednesday. "Streams of information have become the paradigm of choice on the Web," noted Mayer.

plications catering to users who visit the site every day. They include a local weather forecast, Facebook friends' birthdays, and a snapshot of popular trending Web searches. The overhaul includes optimization for smartphones and tablets as well.

Accordingly, the redesign -- its first in four years -- includes a news feed with an infinite scroll. The news feed is customizable, with topics that range from sports to finance to health -- and more. Yahoo also is making a play for socially minded users, allowing them to log in either with a Yahoo or Facebook ID. As has become the custom online, users can see which articles their friends have shared. Yahoo also has newly designed ap-

Not Unforgettable? The new home page is streamlined, designed to correspond with current practices on other sites, and highly customizable. However, it is not particularly innovative or memorable, said Hyun-Yeul Lee, an assistant professor at Boston University. "The visual branding and the aesthetic outcome of the home page -- what it looks like, what it feels like, and how easy it is to use -- follows some very basic Web conventions but fails to set a tone that thoughtful design can contribute to innovating the brand, she told the E-Commerce Times. "The home page redesign is not one to remember." The interface is an attempt at a responsive Web design approach, but it fails in execution, Lee continued, particularly with respect to optimizing the organization of information for presentation on both desktops and tablets. "From tablet to smaller screen sizes on mobile phones, the most pertinent widget stream ends up taking more of the screen space," she pointed out. The greatest strengths of the new Yahoo home page are the minimized ad presence, Lee noted, and the way it

guides users to their preferences. Yahoo's redesign may not have to be an eye-popper to be deemed a success, though. It's possible that a comfortable look and feel is exactly what the designers were going for. Familiarity is important, noted Fadi Shuman, CEO and founder of Pod1. "It's clear they're taking a lead from Google's aesthetic -- larger fonts, less noise all over, and a focus on key categories like Mail and News," he told the E-Commerce Times. "What's even more interesting is that there is only a single banner ad on the entire page," observed Shuman. Mayer's Clout The Yahoo redesign represents a much-needed improvement in how it allows users to engage with its massive trove of content, especially on mobile devices, Tony Winders, senior vice president of GumGum, told the E-Commerce Times. "The new Yahoo is impressive, but the fact that any home page redesign would receive so much attention is surprising. It's a testament to Yahoo's continued clout as a consumer Internet juggernaut and the media's faith in Mayer as its savior," he said. Although the new personalization capabilities, better use of images, Facebook integration and endless news scroll make for a better user experience, Winders acknowledged, "it's unclear yet how that will translate into ad revenue." India to launch Mars mission this year:

Pranab Mukherjee

India will launch its first space mission to Mars this year, President Pranab Mukherjee said today "Several space missions are planned for 2013, including India's first mission to Mars and the launch of our first navigational satellite," Mukherjee said in his maiden Address to the joint sitting of Parliament at the start of the Budget Session. The Indian Space Research Organisation will also put in orbit the first of its seven satellites of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The system is India's version of the Global Positioning System. The Mars Orbiter mission, scheduled for launch in October, will look for signature of life and reasons for loss of atmosphere on the red planet. Under the mission, India will put in orbit a spacecraft using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. The satellite will undertake a 300day journey to Mars and is expected to be put into the Martian orbit in September next year. Mukherjee said the space programme epitomised India's scientific achievements and benefits the country in a number of areas. "The launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle on September 9, 2012 marked our 100th space mission. India's first remote sensing satellite RISAT-1, with all-weather imaging capability, was also launched in 2012," he said.

Inside the Buckingham Palace rooms STANDING on a French carpet from the 17th century while a £2 million painting by Canaletto hangs in the background, this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the lavish surroundings that Queen Elizabeth II calls home. But despite the collection of riches taking up every corner of this Buckingham Palace room, a quick glance into the background suggests that times could be tight at the Royal Family’s headquarters. While you may expect a fire to be roaring, or at least a sophisticated central heating system to be firing, a tiny two-bar electric heater can be spotted helping to heat the high-ceilinged Audience Room. A long line of budget cuts has forced the Royals to make cutbacks in recent years, while the repair bill for the ageing palace increases. But despite near-freezing temperatures in London, the Royals are known to face the cold with fortitude, with the dated rooms in their various haunts known for their draughts and difficulty to heat. This picture of the Queen was taken yesterday, as the monarch welcomed the Australian High Commissioner Mike Rann and his wife Sasha for a private audience - one of three audiences held throughout the day.

Canaletto’s Venice: Piazza San Marco towards San Geminiano is joined on the wall by Thomas Gainsborough’s portrait of Anne, Duchess of Cumberland, valued at £5million. A pair of English porcelain pheasants from the 18th century can be spotted on the mantelpiece, beneath a gilt wood mirror. The room, situated on the palace’s first floor, is also peppered with photographs of Royals, including the Queen

Mother, Queen Elizabeth’s father George VI and a signed photo of her son Earl of Wessex with his bride the Countess of Wessex. Another side-table is devoted to her grandchildren, featuring pictures of Prince William and Prince Harry in military uniforms and wedding picture of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall. It also features a photograph of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their engagement. (DM)

Saudi skyscraper set to be world’s tallest THE British company that built the Shard has landed a contract to manage the construction of what will become the world’s largest building - and plans reveal the two look remarkably similar. London-based Mace won the £780 million deal to build the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which will stand more than 3,280ft (1km) high. The Shard is currently western Europe’s tallest building, while the company also played a role in several of London’s most recognisable landmarks, such as the London Eye. Mace will participate in a joint venture with fellow British firm EC Harris to create the huge building, which has been given a completion date of 2018. The Kingdom Tower, which will have a construction area of more than 5,381,955 square feet (500,000 sq m), will stand at four times the size of the

Shard. It will overlook the Red Sea and is expected to take over from the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which standing at an incredible 2,717ft (828m), as the world’s tallest skyscraper. It is not yet known how tall the skyscraper will be as developers keep exact details of the plan a secret. The development, unveiled by billionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, is part of a £13billion redevelopment of the Kingdom City, north of Jeddah. The plans have been designed by American firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. When the design was originally unveiled in August 2011, it was said the tower will have a three-petal

footprint and tapering wings to produce an aerodynamic shape that will help reduce structural loading due to wind vortex shedding. Each of its three sides features a series of notches that create pockets of shadow to shield areas of the building from the sun and provide outdoor terraces with stunning views of Jeddah and the Red Sea. It will contain 59 elevators, with the quickest travelling at a rate of 10 metres per second, and have a five-star Four Seasons hotel. The sprawling mega project, first announced in 2008, will cover two square miles at its base, and will also include serviced apartments, luxury flats and offices. (MOL)

Booze!

Americans don't drink too much On any given day in the US, 18 percent of men and 11 percent of women drink more alcohol than federal dietary guidelines recommend, according to a new study that also finds 8 percent of men and 3 percent of women are full-fledged 'heavy' drinkers. That still means the great majority of Americans stay within the advised limit of two drinks a day for men, and one for women. "And in fact, most adults don't drink at all on any given day. But the fact remains that it is a significant public health problem that many people do drink in excess," said Patricia Guenther, the lead study author and a nutritionist at the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. Guenther said members of the committee that drafted the current USDA guidelines on alcohol consumption wanted to know how many adults exceeded the limits. She and her colleagues collected data from a nationally representative survey on health and nutrition, which included about 5,400 adults over age 21. Among other things, each was asked how much alcohol they drank the previous day. The researchers found that 64 percent of men and 79 percent of women said they drank no alcohol at all that day, and another 18 percent of men and 10 percent of women drank within the recommended amounts. Nine percent of men said they had three to four drinks the day before and 8 percent of women said they drank two to three alcoholic beverages, the researchers report in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The heaviest drinkers of all were the 8 percent of men who had five or more drinks, and 3 percent of women who had four or more. "Overall the study confirms that rates of unhealthy alcohol use in the US are significant," said Jennifer Mertens, a research scientist at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, who was not involved in the study. Regularly drinking more than recommended levels "is linked to increased alcohol-related problems," Mertens wrote in an email to Reuters Health. "Binge drinking (more than four drinks on any one day for men and more than three on any one day for women and older adults) even one time can increase the risk of injury from falls, motor vehicle accidents, and other accidents," she added. Among men, the 31-to-50-year-old age group had the most heavy drinkers - 22 percent. Among women, the heaviest drinkers - 12 percent - were between 51 and 70 years old. Guenther said that's important to note because it highlights that heavy drinking is not just part of life among the college-age set. "People need to be aware that there are people of all ages who drink to excess," she told Reuters Health. The US Preventive Services Task Force, a government-backed advisory group, urges health care providers to screen all adults for risky drinking behaviors. Guenther said her team's study is also important in that it may help people recognize whether they themselves are drinking more than recommended. "There are people who don't realize that they are drinking more than what's beneficial to their health," she said. The Study was published in 'Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics'

An Indian victory that seemed imminent minutes after tea on day four was eventually completed by Sachin Tendulkar, 40 minutes before lunch on day five. Australia's resistance over that period arrived too late to change the result, but in it may be found the clues to a tighter contest when the second match begins in Hyderabad on Saturday.

West Indies beat Zimbabwe by seven wickets at Gernada GERNADA - West Indies beat Zimbabwe by seven wickets in the second one-day international at the National Cricket Stadium on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the threegame series. Ramnaresh Sarwan hit an undefeated 120, his highest ever one-day international score, as West Indies reached 274-3 with an over to spare. Kieron Pollard was also unbeaten on 41 of just 20 balls while opener Kieran Powell had scored 57. Zimbabwe had made 273 for eight in their 50 overs with Craig Ervine scoring 80 while Dwayne Bravo became only the eighth West Indies bowler to claim six or more wickets. Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor also praised Sarwan saying that “the guys put their hands up and fought hard today. You have to give credit to Sarwan for holding the innings together". West Indies won the first match at the same venue by 156 runs on Friday while the third and final game will also be played in Grenada on Tuesday.

India take 1-0

lead with eight-wicket win

MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Tendulkar were the pivotal contributors to India's 1-0 series lead, showing greater discipline and awareness of the sort of cricket best played on the MA Chidambaram Stadium's clay court. Save for Michael Clarke's first-day century and James Pattinson's fiery pace, it was not until Moises Henriques stood up with the bat in the second innings that the tourists showed evidence of catching up. A target of only 50 to win was reached with the help of some Tendulkar fireworks - towering sixes from his first two deliveries against Nathan Lyon - but Pattinson again bowled well to the openers and Lyon showed far greater consistency of line and control of length than he had managed while being taken for 3 for 215 in the first innings. India were left with some questions about

For the two decades since their return from sporting isolation, South Africa have been among the top teams in the world, without ever having a sustained run as the undisputed No. 1. Even in the recent successes, an element of ruthlessness was missing, highlighted by the lack of consecutive Test victories over a four-year span ending with the hard-fought series victory over Australia. Graeme Smith's men have been unrelenting in correcting that anomaly over the home summer. Not only have they won all five Tests, they have utterly dominated almost all of them, as the margins suggest: innings and 27 runs, innings and 193 runs, 211 runs, four wickets and today at Centurion, innings and 18 runs. None of those matches went to the fifth day, the opposition was outclassed in the batting, bowling and fielding, and the near-perfect summer silenced any debate over which was the best side in the world - South Africa now enjoy a 10-point lead over second-placed England. It also quelled murmurs over South Africa's less than impressive record at home in recent years. Smart stats South Africa won all five Tests in their home season. For only the third time since their readmission, they won three or more Tests in a series. The previous two such series came against West Indies in 1998 and 2003-04. Pakistan suffered a whitewash in a series of three or more matches for the fourth time since 2000. Their three previous series whitewashes came against Australia.

their opening pair, M Vijay and Virender Sehwag doing little in either innings, and they may also wonder about subtracting another seam bowler from their XI should the Hyderabad surface be anything like this one. Australia have found a steady batting hand in Henriques, but much of their display in this match will be the cause of serious introspection. Henriques and Lyon had put on 66 for Australia's last wicket, a defiant gesture after the earlier batsmen had failed to stand their ground. Henriques' unbeaten innings completed a fine double for the debutant, who has surely made his place safe for the second Test. Ultimately it was Ravindra Jadeja who ended the stand after 25 minutes on the final morning, switching from over to around the wicket against Lyon and coaxing an inside edge onto

pad that was snapped up by short leg. Pattinson's first ball of the innings was a snorter, pitched short and seaming back sharply at Vijay, though it angled away from Matthew Wade and flew away for four byes. The ball kept Vijay thinking, and after depositing Lyon for one straight six, he fell when an indecisive drive was well taken by Henriques at a shortish mid-off. Lyon, meanwhile, showed some evidence of improvement in his bowling. He twirled down far fewer deliveries that could be tucked around the corner behind square leg, and the better line forced some impatient premeditated strokes from Pujara. It also undid Sehwag when he snicked to Clarke at slip. This little joust was ultimately immaterial to the result, sealed as it was by Tendulkar's sixes, but demonstrated that Lyon was learning. SOUTH AFRICA complete series sweep

Dale Steyn became the third-highest wicket-taker for South Africa after going past Allan Donald. Only Shaun Pollock (421) and Makhaya Ntini (390) are ahead of Steyn. Kyle Abbott's match haul of 9 for 68 is the third best by a South African bowler on Test debut and the best for South Africa since their readmission. Abbott's 9 for 68 is also the third best performance by a South African bowler against Pakistan. Abbott's performance is also the best by a bowler on debut against Pakistan. It has been all one-way traffic over the past couple of months, and it looked like that would be the case on Sunday as well. There were plenty of cracks in the Centurion pitch making the odd ball swerve dramatically, and there was a bit of unpre-

dictable bounce as well. And Dale Steyn removed Pakistan's man for a crisis, Younis Khan, early with another of his typical haveto-poke-at outswingers. Azhar Ali and Imran Farhat, however, kept the South African pace battery at bay for a couple of hours. Ali, who had only one substantial score in five previous innings, capitalised on the deliveries on his pads, and was happy to otherwise push around for the singles. He looked to leave as many deliveries as he could, and defended solidly as he patiently made his way to an unbeaten 27 by lunch. That opened the gates for a slew of wickets. Debutant Kyle Abbott got yet another wicket behind the stumps as Farhat edged through to the keeper, before Rory Kleinveldt finally had

reward for his persistence. Misbah-ul-Haq nicked one through to AB de Villiers, and soon after Asad Shafiq gave away his wicket by punching a catch to Vernon Philander at mid-off. With an hour still left till tea, and Pakistan's tail notoriously fragile, there was a genuine chance that the match would finish before the session was scheduled to. Sarfraz Ahmed, who has been hopeless with the bat all the series, and Saeed Ajmal, who put up some resistance in Newlands as well, made sure the collapse didn't extend beyond four wickets, playing out the 13 overs till the break. Steyn returned to whip out two wickets, to go past the great Allan Donald's Test haul of 330 wickets, and was one away from yet another five-for. Abbott got his ninth wicket of the match when he got the other debutant Ehsan Adil to steer a catch to third man. It completed a miserable series for Pakistan, whose batting has consistently let them down on the testing surfaces in South Africa. In this match, no batsman made a half-century, and in the series no batsman aggregated 200 runs. For the home side, it was only the third time since their return that they have won three or more Tests in the series. And there was another record for Smith to savour as he became the first captain to win 50 Tests. Not only have the results been magnificent for South Africa, they have been achieved through a eye-catching brand of cricket that combines aggression, grace and efficiency. South Africa fans, lap it up. Source: Cricinfo

P22 lead with eight-wicket win P22 Don't put pressure on me, says

complete series sweep

England win 3rd ODI and the series Eoin Morgan and Joe Root ensured England completed a comfortable five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third and final one day international match at Eden Park on Saturday to wrap up the series AUCKLAND - Root (28 not out) and Morgan (39) built on the foundation laid by captain Alastair Cook (46) and Jonathan Trott (38) as England reached 186 for five in 37.3 overs to complete the 2-1 series victory. England's opening bowlers James Anderson and Steve Finn had set up the victory when they helped bowl the hosts out for a paltry 185 in 43.5 overs, with New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum (79) the only batsman to provide any resistance. Anderson and Finn put immense pressure on the top order to reduce the hosts to 11 for three inside eight overs, which ensured they never got their innings going as they were unable to take too many risks and lost wickets at regular intervals. Apart from McCullum's fireworks for the second successive match, Ross Taylor's dismissal for 28 was the only other talking point in New Zealand's innings that was at least 100 runs short of a competitive target on the small ground. Taylor was given out by umpire Chris Gaffaney after he appeared to nick a delivery from Stuart Broad to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, though the batsman immediately asked for it to be reviewed. None of the review tools available, especially 'hot spot' that shows whether a batsman has hit the ball, appeared conclusive, but television umpire Rod Tucker upheld the on-field umpire's decision to Taylor's visible annoyance. Finn was the pick of England's bowlers, having figures of three for 10 from eight overs before McCullum, who clubbed five sixes in his rear-guard action, and Andrew Ellis took 17 runs from his ninth over. Finn finished with three for 27. England now moves to Queenstown for a four-day match against a New Zealand XI before the first of three tests begins at Dunedin's University Oval on March 6.

AFRIDI Flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi asked national selectors to not put pressure on him by making unsolicited statements and also made it clear that the decision to quit the game remains his prerogative

KARACHI: After recalling Afridi in the one-day squad for the series against South Africa, chief selector Iqbal Qasim had said the all-rounder will have to justify his selection by putting up a good show. "I don't know in what context or scenario Iqbal Qasim said these things for me. But no one should put pressure on me," Afridi told reporters. "My fans still want me to continue playing and I will decide myself till when to continue playing or when to leave," Afridi added. Afridi said he was determined to do well for the country and no one needs to remind him that. "I have always said that I will never give anyone a chance to tell me that it is time for me to go. I am going to South Africa in a confident state of mind and I am ready for the challenge and to perform well as I have done in the past," he said. The chief selector's remarks about Afridi generated a lot of debate inthe cricket circles with many former players and critics insisting that Qasim had made unnecessary comments. Asked about his struggle in batting, Afridi said one couldn't play aggressive all the time batting at number seven.
