Saving Our Lagoon

The health of the Indian River Lagoon is critical;

the water’s health affects not only the myriad of creatures dependent upon it, but us as well. The lagoon is a treasured natural resource not only in and of itself but also for the benefits it brings to human well-being and prosperity. Many regional organizations recognize this and are working to understand and communicate the complex causes and cures for the challenges the lagoon now faces. Such organizations include Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI), Ocean Research and Conservation Association (ORCA), Indian River Land Trust (IRLT), ourselves - Environmental Learning Center (ELC), and many other not-for-profit, private, and government organizations. The collective efforts of all will ultimately be what saves our lagoon. All people’s behaviors affect the health of the lagoon, whether the individuals or businesses are located right alongside the lagoon or miles away. Education is key. But in order to effectively engage all in this environmental stewardship effort, all have to both realize their environmental

impact and also care – this necessitates they be communicated with in their own language and with their own values and challenges acknowledged. This is where education efforts that cross traditional disciplinary and societal boundaries steps in to play a critical role; and environmental educators need to change the way they are teaching environmental behavior change to meet our social community’s needs simultaneous with environmental needs. To that end, we have been recently piloting and building partnership projects that meld lagoon-based science education with social empowerment themes – through conservation projects, workforce development opportunities, and providing nature-enriching therapeutic experiences for a broader demographic. We have also been deliberately strengthening connections with other environmental, education and social service organizations whose missions traverse all aspects of people’s interactions with themselves, the environment, each other, and our Lagoon. In conjunction with the IRLT—whose mission is to preserve and improve our natural resources—we finished our second College Internship in Conservation and Education, through which

university students learned real-life job skills, splitting their time between field research with scientists on IRLT properties bordering the lagoon, researching best habitat management practices, and teaching outdoor camps for hundreds of youth on our island campus, focused on disconnecting them from technology and connecting them to nature. Partnering with The Learning Alliance—whose goal is to achieve 90% student literacy by third grade—and the School District of Indian River County, we also hosted incoming 3rd grade students struggling with reading skills (one of the biggest factors affecting academic and ultimately job success) twice a week for 5 weeks, though the Literacy on the Lagoon program, the children learning numerous words based on lagoon ecology and environmental stewardship, but in a fun outdoor, participatory manner. Partnering with Gifford Youth Achievement Center (GYAC)—whose mission is to develop self-esteem, teach character, and encourage individuals to reach their full potential—we are continuing the program called Boys to Men to Greatness in Nature, where each month teenage boys from at-risk backgrounds are partnered with mentors engaged in lagoon-based scientific data collection, boating, fishing, horticulture and other activities that get them out in nature while also increasing their knowledge

of and interest in future environmental careers paths. And this coming year we will continue our Livin’ for the Lagoon education program, in which decision-makers and influencers in neighborhoods governed by homeowner associations gain in-depth knowledge of Florida friendly landscaping and other best practices that reduce neighborhood impacts on lagoon water quality. These partnership-based examples are just a few of the many hope-filling efforts area organizations are working on to both improve the health of the lagoon as well as human health—both of which are inextricably intertwined. There is much work to be done. Look up the many organizations mentioned in this article, learn more about their work, and support them in any way you can. Deep and growing partnerships that focus on the positive relationship between nature and people will make the lagoon’s and our future bright. Molly Steinwald, Executive Director Environmental Learning Center (ELC) Vero Beach, FL ELC is a 64-acre nature center on Wabasso Island in the Indian River Lagoon. The mission of the Environmental Learning Center is to educate, inspire and empower all people, including those with minimal access to nature, to be active stewards of the environment and their own well-being. www.discoverelc.org.

Try Getting Old with Nowhere to Live By D. Lorne Coyle, MDiv

Getting old is tough enough by itself. Aches and pains, loss of friends and family, isolation, minimal income. But getting old and having nowhere to live is even worse. In Indian River County the fair market value rent for an efficiency apartment is $593 per month. For a senior on Social Security, rent alone would cost more than 50% of his monthly income. That leaves little for utilities, food, clothing, and medicine. That’s why so many seniors are living in substandard housing, some even in their cars. Indian River County estimates that by 2025 the population designated as seniors will increase by 8000. So the need is only going to grow.

To that end, the Manor is launching a capital campaign to raise $2,025,000 to construct two new buildings, each housing 18 more seniors, for a total of 36 more people.

St. Francis Manor has been housing limited income seniors in affordable, safe, and dignified housing since 1974. Our average rent is $350. Now hosting 100 seniors, the Manor has a waiting list which has grown to 45 seniors. The need is great and the Manor is committed to meeting it.

Imagine if it were your grandmother living in a car?

Family Education Center Coming! Thanks to a small group of generous donors, The Buggy Bunch has chosen a building in a strategic downtown “Old Vero” location to serve as its headquarters. The new Vero Beach Family Education Center will allow The Buggy Bunch to expand infrastructure to meet the demand for new and targeted family programming.

“Every single aspect of The Buggy Bunch will drastically improve by the addition of the Vero Beach Family Education Center,” says Executive Director Kelly Sartain. Renovations planned for the iconic building located at 1450 21st Street in downtown Vero Beach include spaces for young children to play and learn while moms attend classes, meet with mentors, and gain tools to enrich their homes and family lives. An expanded Diaper Closet will help struggling moms meet the physical needs of their children. Educational Play Space will employ intentional research-based strategies for early childhood learning. Existing infrastructure will utilize conference rooms, staff offices, and even a commercial teaching kitchen. Although The Buggy Bunch will still host events in municipal parks and existing churches, the new building will serve as

dedicated space for consistent engagement with families. “We have now, proudly, grown to a size… that it is prudent and necessary to obtain our own space in order to continue on our path of expansion to reach all moms in Indian River County,” says Rebecca Schlitt, Chair of the Board of Trustees. The new building, which is set to open its doors in 2018, will provide more opportunities to discover and meet urgent needs in our community. A $2,000,000 project, The Buggy Bunch has already raised over $850,000 and paid cash for the purchase. The closing date is set for 1/30. Anyone interested in contributing to the building fund can contact Kelly Sartain at info@thebuggybunch.com The Buggy Bunch is a non profit involving churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals supporting moms and families across the Treasure Coast. All moms are welcome regardless of background, beliefs, & socioeconomic status. Membership is free to all moms. The Buggy Bunch is dedicated to meeting the urgent needs of moms in Indian River County, as well as to gather for fun, fellowship, and fitness. Through our relationships and programs we want to bring one another into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, ultimately preparing and equipping moms for personal involvement in outreach and discipleship.

Restaurant Review:

The Patio Seafood Tavern By Marcela DelSolar

Photos by Scott Finney

The theme of tonight’s meal at The Patio Seafood Tavern was “tender”. The rustic charm of this historical landmark never disappoints, but I was more interested in discovering if there was truth to all of the amazing reviews I have been hearing about the “new and improved” (it has now been re-opened for 2 years) appeal of one of Vero’s oldest establishments. Starting a new restaurant in this town is always a challenge, and the new owner, Bill Brown, was very daring when he decided to keep the same name of a restaurant that so many loved for so many years. How easy it is for one to walk in expecting to have the exact same experience they once did, but … sometimes new IS actually better! The integrity of the buildings original history draped in beautiful paintings, driftwood, rod iron and antique tiles was left intact from it’s original hay-day, but the atmosphere has certainly changed. Nightly music (tonight showcased dueling pianos), sharp looking and attentive staff dressed in nicely pressed white shirts with red suspenders (matching the Patio’s logo colors) reminded me of the elegant taverns Crispy Calamari one would find up north. Both bars were packed with locals laughing, and catching up after the holidays, and I felt like singing “Where everybody knows your name”. Tonight’s tasting included the “Crispy Calamari”. Julienne steak style, tossed with a citrus beurre blanc, sriracha, capers and tomatoes. This was by far the most tender calamari I have ever expe10 oz NY Strip rienced. The portion was generous enough that I could have easily shared with my friend had I not been so selfish! Even though I was dining at a seafood tavern, I was in the mood for steak, so I ordered a 10 oz. Prime NY strip that was served with a medley of fresh vegetables over creamy mashed potatoes that would have made my grandmother proud. The steak was so tender that I barely needed the steak knife to cut it. I am not sure which of the flavors delighted me more – but will admit the lemon zest with a spicy twist left my mouth watering. And thanks to my server, I had the perfect glass of Pinot Noir to accompany the ambrosia of tonight’s meal. Happy anniversary to Vero’s oldest new restaurant! I have already made reservations for dinner with friends!

State of the Art Entertainment & Event Venue in the Works in Vero Beach! You may have noticed some recent activity in the old historical Florida Theater at Theater Plaza in downtown Vero Beach.

That’s because Friends of the Hub, Inc., a newly formed nonprofit, recently sponsored two large events expressly for the purpose of assisting in fundraising efforts to renovate the theater. The events, Raising Our Stars which was held inside the theater on December 15th, and the recent Vero Beach Community New Year’s Eve Celebration, were the kick-off for a fundraising campaign focused upon renovating and updating the theater. Friends intend the new name, THE HUB @ Theatre Plaza, to reflect their hope that it will serve as a town hall of the future or center for community activity as a state of the art venue for Vero Beach and surrounding area. It will have the ability to host a myriad of events requiring seating for up to 450 people, including TEDx Talks, plays, business conferences, educational events and weddings. The future plans for THE HUB @ Theatre Plaza call for the installation of movable floor, a skybox, as well as the newest technology in sound, video and virtual reality. For further information, or if you wish help our “Raising Our Star Campaign”, please contact Suzy Feeney at (772) 321-4008.

Reclaimed Ministries Out of the World...

and Into the Word!

Have you ever thought about what the term “Front Line” means? According to Webster’s Dictionary there are several meanings: 1 a : a military line formed by the most advanced tactical combat units; also : front 2a(2) b : an area of potential or actual conflict or struggle. 2 : the most advanced, responsible, or visible position in a field or activity. Knowing this, have you ever thought about who takes on the Front Lines in YOUR Community? That’s right – who takes on the most advanced responsibility in making a difference in peoples’ lives where we live, work and play? Everyone wants to do good, have a positive impact right? Well you can – by supporting a Front Line ministry right here in your community: Reclaimed Ministries, a local 501 c (3) located in Sebastian, FL. We have had a positive impact in hundreds of peoples’ lives from helping those needing a hand-up, providing Marriage services and of course continuing hurricane relief – especially after Mathew just came through our area. You see, not everyone can take the time, or spend the money to have and do their own ministry. But you can be a part of the bigger picture and join forces with us here in your community. Reclaimed Ministries is gladly looking for volunteers to help in all aspects. Want to financially contribute? Your contributions help make an impact from putting a new roof on an elderly person’s home – to helping the widowed woman having a bathroom replaced in her trailer. There are so many needs in our community which go unrecognized, yet need that front line person to handle it to get the job done. Will you please consider donating today? Your partnership makes a difference! For more information, please contact Reclaimed Ministries directly at (772) 581-7424
