The Salvation Army: Providing help and hope to our community What do you think about when you see the iconic Red Shield of The Salvation Army?

Many think of chiming bells on sidewalks during the rush of the Christmas Season. Maybe you think of the great deal you got on a gently loved item from our Family Store. Perhaps you remember a time in your youth that The Salvation Army canteen fed your family after a natural disaster. Or maybe, you remember stories from your grandpa’s time in the war recounting the way The Salvation Army supported him during that time. In truth, The Salvation Army means many things to many people. It has been a foundational force for good and an example of Christian faith in action in communities around the world since 1865. This June, Captains Ryan and Amber Meo were transferred to Vero Beach and given the responsibility of leading the work of The Salvation Army in Indian River County. Among the various responsibilities they share is pastoring the congregation at The Salvation Army’s church at 2655 5th St. SW., Vero Beach, which also houses the Social Services campus. “Although moving during this pandemic has presented unique challenges we have been inspired by the generosity and remarkable spirit of community displayed by the donors and supporters of The Salvation Army of Indian River County”, Captain Amber Meo says. Captains Meo are also tasked with directing social services, community youth programs, disaster response efforts, and The Family Store operation.

The economic impact of COVID 19 has caused thousands of our neighbors to experience need like never before; many of whom have never needed assistance from organizations like The Salvation Army. “The Salvation Army is uniquely positioned to mobilize and adapt to meet the needs of our community. They do not call us an ‘Army’ for no reason,” says, Captain Ryan Meo. The organization has seen an alarming increase across the many programs and services provided since March of 2020. For instance, the amount of grocery boxes and hot meals served has more than quadrupled compared to this time last year. The amount of financial assistance, in the form of rental and utility assistance given to those who have experienced hardship as a result of COVID 19 has tripled in the last year. The organization has been able to meet this increased need with the invaluable support of private donors and other churches and non-profits including First United Methodist Church of Vero Beach, Love to Serve, Inc., and Team Success Enterprises, Inc. (Continued on the next page)

How can I help? The 100% volunteer Red Kettle campaign of Indian River County is considered the standard for other Salvation Army units across the state of Florida. “This amazing display of service and generosity every year says so much about this community.”, says Captain Meo. The Red Kettle Campaign is The Salvation Army’s most important fundraiser of the year and has become part of the fabric of the American Christmas. “This year, perhaps more than ever, neighbors can come together to serve each other and be a part of the redemptive work of God in this community”, adds Captain Meo. The Salvation Army anticipates the needs of Indian River County residents will increase as the economic impact of COVID 19 rages on. You can join The Salvation Army in it’s Fight for Good by volunteering to ring at one of its roughly 15 red kettle locations. If you or your family, or a group, class, office, team, or service club would like to ring, visit RegisterToRing.com. Community members are urged to donate during the Red Kettle Campaign. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to consider matching a day at the Red Kettle. The organization needs to raise $200,000 this year to ensure they can continue to serve Indian River County residents in 2021.

Kristina Conn Foundation Always Love And Hope

www.MyKCF.org 772-202-2107 Kristina Conn Foundation (KCF) was formed after the bravest, most outgoing, strong, enthusiastic, hopeful, loving, energetic & magnetic person you could imagine, Kristina Conn.

Kristina passed away on October 3, 2015, at 21 years old due to complications from Cystic Fibrosis. Her family knew they needed to do something in her honor and her memory that would impact their community the same way Kristina did. People admired her for strength and her constant compassion for those in need, regardless of her own struggles. She was a symbol of strength as she carried out each of her days and gave people courage, strength, LOVE AND HOPE to face another day while reminding them that everything would be okay no matter what. Because of her, KCF provides families with ease and comfort knowing they are not alone during their times of struggle.

The MISSION of KCF is to assist local families who experience life challenges due to sudden and or unexpected crisis and to reassure them there is ALWAYS LOVE AND HOPE. The organization is run solely by volun-teers who believe in and dedicate their time to uphold the MISSION of Kristina Conn Foundation. Every volunteer takes pride in the work they do for KCF and are humbled by the impact it has on the community. KCF networks with other organizations within our community to assure the assistance provided to these families is the absolute best to fulfill their needs. There is a variety of assistance offered, from guidance seeking a resolution, holding a fundraiser, providing immedi-ate funds (depending on the circum-stance) to arranging meal provisions. The perfect example of this is the Sendra family, who were assisted in 2018 into 2019. Cancer struck the heart of this family as Mrs. Sendra fought a good fight. A wife and mother of 4 was no longer able to do the day to day things she was used to. A husband and father found himself carrying the load, trying to balance their world. Kristina Conn Foundation came to their aid by providing a complete Thanksgiving Day meal that was prepared and delivered on Thanksgiving. Arranged scheduled meals for several weeks so it was one less thing to worry about.

KCF created an online fundraiser for the family to offset household expenses due to Mr. Sendra being out of work to take care of his wife. The family was included in KCF’s Christmas Family Gift Event, where community sponsors helped us provide all the children and both parents with gifts, plus a Christmas meal was prepared and delivered on Christmas Day. KCF provided direct funds to aid with end of life arrangements for Mrs. Sendra when her fight came to an end. Mr. Sendra remains close to KCF and he continues to attend our community events as a way to “Pay It Forward”.

CHRISTMAS FAMILY GIFT EVENT

Christmas was Kristina’s favorite time of year and she never wanted anyone to go without or feel alone during the holidays. For this reason, along with the fact her parents know exactly what it means to struggle, even more during the holidays, it was clear we had to have our biggest event of the year at Christmas. Due to the extra stress of the holidays, KCF makes sure that not only ALL children, regardless of age, get to celebrate equally, but that parents are supported and acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to their family through their struggle. We at KCF want to encourage, support and reassure these families so they know and believe there is ALWAYS LOVE AND HOPE in any situation.

Walk to Remember raises funds to help those suffering from neurodegenerative disease in Indian River County WALK TO REMEMBER raises awareness and crucial funds that pay for vital programs and services that help individuals in Indian River County who are grappling with Alzheimer’s and/ or Parkinson’s and related neurodegenerative diseases. All proceeds from the event are invested locally in programs ranging from facilitated support groups and social respite to exercise, balance, yoga, Qigong and related movement programs. Judith Lemoncelli, Senior Director, Development & Communications at the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association, said, “We’ve set the bar very high this year...and are encouraged by the enthusiasm from the Vero Beach community. We look forward to celebrating with our wonderful friends and supporters on Walk day.” Lemoncelli said that hundreds of walkers are expected to

participate on November 14, adding that “it will be a moving yet fun day for families in Indian River County. We have a user-friendly Walk website and we encourage residents to start or join a team at www.walktoremembervero. org as every dollar counts!” Because of the restrictions imposed by the current pandemic, the Walk To Remember will take place in various locations – neighborhoods, tracks, parks, and trails. Snacks and refreshments will be available to all registered walkers on November 14 at all designated starting locations. The Walk To Remember Presenting Sponsor is the Walter S. Borisenok Family Foundation and this year’s Leadership Sponsor is Coastal Concierge Services. Other top sponsors include the George E. Warren Corporation, Este and Charles Brashears and Regency Park/Harbor Chase. Does it Really Work?

by Rod Davis CEO, BBB Serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean When you take a few minutes to read a magazine, a website, or watch tv, the miracle cures for wrinkles, hair regeneration, snoring, high blood pressure, weight loss, and every other challenge we face on a daily basis are here today and readily available, but are they? Billions of dollars are spent by consumers chasing cures and solutions that just do not work. So how can you tell if an ad is true? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the regulatory body most responsible for oversight of advertising. The FTC and the BBB both have Codes of Advertising that when followed, require claims of effectiveness and superiority be supported with solid data and, as appropriate, medical studies performed by reputable organizations using scientifically accepted methodologies. According to the FTC, companies must support their advertising claims with solid proof. This is especially true for businesses that market food, over-thecounter drugs, dietary supplements, contact lenses, and other health-related products. So, if there are ads and testimonials, then the claims must be true or the FTC would be issuing fines and requiring the ads be discontinued, right? Well not exactly. The number of ads, claims and transient nature of advertising make it impossible for the FTC and other regulators to stop the majority of false or unsubstantiated claims. BBB is also working with businesses to encourage them to follow good advertising practices and only make claims that are supported with applicable data and studies. BBB asks advertisers to provide documentation for claims made in our area and if they are not able to provide substantiation, to end or change the advertising to remove claims that can’t be substantiated. The rating for a business will be negatively affected if a business

continues to run advertising that does not have appropriate substantiation. As a consumer you play an important role in helping to promote honest advertising. Before you make a purchase with a business based on a claim, look for substantiation. The FTC provides some straightforward guidance to businesses about advertising and these examples can help you better evaluate the ads being used to get you to purchase a product. An advertiser wishes to make the claim that a supplement product will substantially reduce body fat. The advertiser has two controlled, double-blind studies showing a modest but statistically significant loss of fat at the end of a six-week period. However, there is an equally well-controlled, blinded 12-week study showing no statistically significant difference between test and control groups. Assuming other aspects of methodology are similar, the studies taken together suggest that, if the product has any effect on body fat, it would be very small. Given the totality of the evidence on the subject, the claim is likely to be unsubstantiated. An advertisement for a weight loss supplement features a before-and-after photograph of a woman and quotes her as saying that she lost 20 pounds in 8 weeks while using the supplement. An asterisk next to the quotation references a disclaimer in fine print at the

bottom of the ad that reads, “Results may vary.” The experience of the woman is accurately represented, but the separate, competent research demonstrating the efficacy of the supplement showed an average weight loss of only 6 pounds in 8 weeks. Therefore, the disclosure does not adequately convey to consumers that they would likely see much less dramatic results. The placement and size of the disclaimer is also insufficiently prominent to qualify the claim effectively. One approach to adequate qualification of this testimonial would be to include a disclaimer immediately adjacent to the quote, in equal print size that says, “These results are not typical. Average weight loss achieved in clinical study was 6 pounds.”

purported doctor endorsements weren’t based on an appropriate exercise of medical expertise. What about the dozens of consumer testimonials featured in ads? In many instances, the people who praised the product didn’t use the formulation that was actually for sale. In other cases, their endorsements resulted from the defendants’ offer of free product in exchange for “especially positive and inspiring” reviews of Synovia – a material connection the defendants failed to disclose. Still other testimonials were flat-out fakes allegedly fabricated by the company. And that early user “Steve” who reported such dramatic results? The ads didn’t disclose that was A.S. Research’s co-owner – and now co-defendant – Stephen J. Young.

The FTC recently brought an action against the sellers of Synovia alleging that: sellers of Synovia claimed their dietary supplement “paves the pot holes” in joints damaged by arthritis. But an FTC lawsuit alleges the primary potholes were in the company’s purported proof, which left consumers steamrolled by false and deceptive advertising claims. In addition, the complaint alleges the company’s testimonials were rife with deception. According to the FTC, those

The old adage still holds, buyer beware. Before you spend your hard-earned dollars, do your research. Ask a business if they have proof to show the claims for their product/service are based on solid facts and research and if not, move on. Testimonials and reviews should also be carefully evaluated since they too can be manipulated to make a product or service seem more effective. If you see a questionable ad, report it to BBB at www.BBB.org/Ad-Truth.

A Heart of Hope A heart of hope – these are the men and women whose lives have been changed forever when they heard the words ‘you have breast cancer.’ Some are courageous breast cancer survivors and others are the also courageous caregivers and supporters. These are the people who have found hope in early detection, treatment advancements, clinical trials and new life saving medications. They know what it is to have hope and they are hoping you will join the movement of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer efforts in Indian River County.

Dr. Daniella Shapiro of Indian River Hematology Oncology is the Event Lead. A survivor herself, her heart for the mission of helping breast cancer patients has been demonstrated over the past several years with fundraising

teams, sponsorship and the initiation of free breast clinics. She knows the importance of raising funds for the research that leads to better tools for finding breast cancer, fighting breast cancer and surviving breast cancer. The October walk will be different this year, but the need to lead the fight against breast cancer has never been more important than now. This year, with the health concerns presented by COVID 19, the American Cancer Society will not be hosting the traditional communitywide face to face gatherings, but make no mistake, we will make strides! And, you can start now! The American Cancer Society is the nation’s largest funder of cancer research outside the federal government. However, the impact of COVID-19, which suspended our spring and

With your help, we’ll give HOPE the advantage. The breast cancer death rate in the US has declined by 40 percent over the past three decades, but there is still more work to be done. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 279,100 new cases of breast cancer in the US in 2020, and 42,690 breast cancer related deaths.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among US women. One in eight women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Each October the American Cancer Society marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. This year, the pandemic has caused cancellation of an estimated 7.2 million screening mammograms in the US – this could mean 36,000 missed breast diagnosis. If your screening mammogram was cancelled, don’t forget to reschedule – today. It’s time to Shoo the Flu with the VNA

99991281/HHA21276095/HPC5038096 • Hospice License Issued in 1986

Flu season is upon us and the VNA is working hard to ensure Indian River County residents are vaccinated during its 28th annual “Shoo the Flu” program. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the WHO (World Health Organization) are strongly urging everyone to get vaccinated for seasonal flu this year, especially those 65 years and older. Administered by a nurse, VNA will offer three types of flu vaccinations: a preservative-free high-dose vaccine, a preservative-free quadrivalent vaccine and a regular quadrivalent vaccine. The high-dose vaccine contains four times the number of antigens and is only for those individuals who are 65 years or older. The quadrivalent vaccine is for individuals 10 years or older and offers broader coverage than the regular flu shot.

Due to COVID-19, our clinics will “look” a little different with strict policies and procedures in place such as mandatory face coverings, social distancing and temperature checks. Public Shoo the Flu clinics will primarily be offered at two locations: VNA Hidden Treasures Thrift Store located at 656 21st St, Vero Beach, FL 32960 and as a drive thru option at the VNA office building located at 1110 35th Lane Vero Beach, FL 32960. Please visit www.vnatc.com/flu for specific dates and times. Getting your flu shot with the VNA means that you are keeping your money local and investing in a non-profit organization. Our priority is keeping our community healthy and safe. With your support, the VNA can continue to provide much needed care for the under or uninsured residents of Indian River County through our home health, hospice and community wellness services. For more information about VNA services, visit our website at www.vnatc. com or call 772.410.3628. For the most up to date Shoo the Flu clinics, visit www.vnatc.com/flu

New Program Offers Space for Veterans and First Responders With the help of a grant from Gold Star Mothers, the MHA is pleased to announce the successful implementation of a new program for veterans & first responders. The program, which starts on September 23rd, opens up the Vero Beach Drop-In Center after-hours every Wednesday from 6-8pm as a meeting place. Jim Ranahan; a retired Navy Veteran will host. Jim’s civilian life included working as Boston Firefighter and, later, as a social worker at the MHA. “When Gold Star Mothers made us one of the beneficiaries of their suicide awareness walk last year, it could not have come at a better time as we had

been in the early stages of forming this program and were unsure exactly how we were going to pay for it.” said Dr. Nicholas Coppola, CEO of the Mental Health Association. ”Of course, COVID put the brakes on the program’s launch for a while but we’re excited to finally be able to give back to our vets & first responders.” Snacks and refreshments will be provided so stop by, say hi, socialize, and swap stories with Jim and other military folks. Restaurant Review:

By Susan Harris

My Companion at dinner tells me: "There's two kinds of people, those who love Captain Butcher's and those who haven't been there yet." And after dining there this past weekend and watching the clouds and Indian River roll by I'd have to agree. You know things are good when the servers are cheery, and the customers are smiling. Appetizers: we started with Seared Scallops which are "cushioned" by incredible cheesy grits with onion bacon jam. We also had hand breaded Coconut Shrimp that's fried with an intriguing orange marmalade sauce. Needless to say it all instantly disappeared. Good, good, good.

Seafood See Water Seize the Day

Photos by Scott Finney

We had a Korean War Veteran "birthday boy" at our table so everyone was being extra polite - but be warned forks were flying. Order extra. The fish and the veggies are all fresh. The fisherman call Captain Butcher's and tell them what they have caught and voila the next thing you know it's on your plate. We were lucky enough to have Red Snapper which was moist and tender. The delicious garlic mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts which accompanied the fish were an added bonus. The Seafood Oscar is one of the most popular options at Captain Butcher's. Seared Scallops (be still my beating heart) and shrimp topped with lump crab meat over lobster cream sauce. Garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus put it over the top making it the crowd pleaser that it is.

Elizabeth with Mike Brennan the Director of Operations and Jimmy Sams the General Manager

We always pick a meat dish and this time we ordered a cheeseburger and fries. As one member of our group said you can tell how good an establishment is by the seasoning on it's fries. They were great as was the plump juicy cheeseburger. Everyone gave it a ten! The real surprise was the Islamorada Chicken, which is parmesan crusted, topped with sautĂŠed mushrooms, onions and a lemon cream sauce, the infamous mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts. Moist, tender, flavorful.

Seared Scallops on cheesy grits with onion bacon jam

We all thought that we had ordered the best item on the menu. And we would all go back again and bring a date! Mike and Tracy Melhado have owned Captain Butcher's for over two years. They are assisted by Mike Brennan the Director of Operations and Jimmy Sams the General Manager. They are a good team. Captain Butcher's sparkles. I almost forgot to tell you about dessert. As there was a birthday at our table we made life easy and chose both the Key Lime Pie and the Mascarpone Deconstructed Cheesecake. They are made fresh on the premises and it is probably the best cheesecake (hint of almond in it) and Key Lime Pie that I have had. The graham cracker crust was incredible as was the consistency.

Seafood Oscar

We were all in agreement - don't miss out. There's a daily Happy Hour (at the Bar Only) from 11am to 6pm with a $5.00 Appetizer Menu. You have to like that. All the social distancing and super cleaning are in force and the staff wears masks. Call 772-318-4229 or drive over to Captain Butcher's at 1732 Indian River Drive, Sebastian. Tell them City Guide sent you.

Getting to know Pastor Trevor Raborn of Morning Star Presbyterian Church by Debbi Goodman Venturina What brought you to Vero Beach? After graduating with a Master of Divinity from Knox Theological Seminary and preaching at various churches in Florida, the Lord called me to serve as Pastor for Morning Star Presbyterian Church in June of 2019. My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Vero at Costa-D'-Este. Little did we know what the Lord had in store 8 years later! Where is the most interesting place you’ve been? We took an anniversary cruise around the snow topped mountains of Alaska, hiking through beautiful forests and glacier trekking. God’s creation is beautiful! Are you on Social Media? We livestream many of our services & Bible studies to Facebook and YouTube. We are connected with missionaries and friends from around the world through Facebook. It's exciting, what the Lord is doing! Check out MorningStarVero.org to connect with us on social media. Tell us about this new food pantry? Dwayne and Debbi Venturina have helped us distribute bread and pastries to families in need. Many families in Vero are seeking assistance with groceries and meals. Our prayer is for Loaves and Fishes, our new food pantry, to help meet these needs. We are currently looking for more staple items to distribute and volunteers to assist.

Pastor Trevor with his wife Melissa

Where do you see your ministry in 10 years? My prayer is that the Lord will continue to have His Way through our ministry. His Will be done! We pray that through our ministry, many more will find salvation through the Good News of Jesus Christ and everlasting life in Him! We look forward to continuing to offer a helping hand to Vero Beach as the hands and feet of Jesus. If your life was a movie, what would it be called? Uniquely, there is already a movie trailer made by my students when I was teaching Biology at Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, entitled, “The Life of Raborn”. Advancing Regenerative Medicine Harness your body’s power to heal naturally

Alita Gonsalves Sikora, MD is treating pain in an innovative way in Vero Beach. She offers natural treatments which are an alternative to surgery. She is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, did her residency at the NY Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia and Cornell Universities and received her MD with Honors at the University of Connecticut. Nearly one-third of U.S. residents suffer from some form of chronic pain, according to the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences. She has focused her practice on offering alternatives to opioids and surgery to treat conditions such as arthritis, rotator cuff tears, golf and tennis elbow, neuropathy, and other tendon and ligament injuries. She treats a variety of patients from young athletes to retirees looking to stay active. She offers cutting edge Regenerative Medicine treatments right here in Vero Beach. So, what exactly is “Regenerative medicine?” “Regenerative medicine is the study of how to heal and repair the body – not just mask problems with cortisone shots or medications [like opioids], but actually have the body heal and repair itself.” Her treatments to repair and regenerate include perineural injections in which dextrose is injected into superficial nerves to treat pain and Platelet Rich Plasma therapy which is derived from a sample of the patient's own blood. The therapeutic injections contain platelet concentrate which is injected into the desired joint or soft tissue using ultrasound guidance. The platelets recruit stem cells into the target tissue and help them differentiate and proliferate and heal tissue. Platelets have many growth factors involved in healing and cellular responses, reduction of inflammation, recovery and cell remodeling.

The most exciting aspect of her practice is stem cell therapy in which she can use your own body’s stem cells or umbilical cord stem cells and inject them into the arthritic joint or injured ligament or tendon and help regenerate and repair tissue. She is a member of the American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians and has trained both in the US and internationally to bring these treatments to Vero Beach. As a recent patient stated, “I did stem cell therapy on my left knee, and I am free of pain. I highly recommend seeing Dr. Sikora before you submit yourself to surgery.” She also uses PRP and stem cell treatments for aesthetics. These treatments can be microneedled into the scalp to stimulate hair growth, the face to reduce wrinkles and stimulate the body to make more collagen, and to treat sexual dysfunction in men and women. She also offers traditional treatments for pain including medication management and steroid injections but is an Integrative Medicine practitioner who offer alternatives with the Regenerative Medicine treatments as well as acupuncture and medical marijuana certifications. “I have patients who have failed every traditional treatment. I have people that have failed multiple surgeries, failed with opioids, physical therapy, and have almost given up. I am here to offer them alternatives to treat their pain naturally.” She also offers wellness services with bioidentical hormones and IV Vitamins Sikora Integrative Medicine is located at 1255 37th Street Ste B in Vero Beach. The phone number is 772-228-6882. To learn more about the services please go to the website www. sikoramedical.com

New Ultrasound on-site at Care Net in Vero let's parents see their baby Written by Kendi Lambert, Director of Client Services

“It was amazing to see my baby for the first time. I was in shock and disbelief. The ultrasound made me more excited to be a parent and made the pregnancy feel real.” Piper* was glowing as she scheduled her first appointment in Care Net’s parenting program, Earn While You Learn. In her hands she held ultrasound photos, which she planned to hang up on the fridge once she got home. Her boyfriend stood behind her with calm strength and pride—a different look than he had 45 minutes prior, when he was nervously rubbed his hands together in the waiting room. He and his beautiful girlfriend were going to be parents—something both dreamed of for the future, but not at this time. A positive pregnancy test during a job loss, international pandemic, and less-thanideal living arrangements was not what Piper and Jake had imagined, but today’s ultrasound brought mixed feelings of peace, hope, and excitement. They were going to have this baby!

This summer, God answered years of prayers on behalf of Care Net IRC. On June 29th, Care Net IRC performed the first on-site ultrasound since Care Net IRC’s establishment in 1984. An ultrasound is a key step for any pregnant woman to take. At Care Net, we know that making a pregnancy decision weighs heavily on our clients’ hearts. Our ultrasound services offer needed information when making a pregnancy choice, as well as emotional, spiritual, and mental support. Since July, we have seen 7 clients change their mind about their pregnancy decision through an ultrasound. If you are making a pregnancy decision, remember that it is important to examine all your options fully, as this is a choice that will impact you for the rest of your life. Take a deep breath. Ask for help. Have the courage to seek accurate information. We are here for each step of this decision - to empower you to make a decision that you will not regret.

"What I love about ultrasound appointments is caring for those who are unexpectedly pregnant and being there to listen, comfort, and share important information about reproduction and fetal development. Ultrasounds are important in determining if the pregnancy is viable and how far along she is. I love watching clients have moments of clarity about their pregnancy choice and helping connect them to the vast array of services we have in place to support them." --Kerry, RDMS, Ultrasound Technician. Faux Fur Ball -

An interactive digital event We are so excited to announce H.A.L.O.’s Faux Furball! With all of the uncertainty in the world today, we searched our hearts and made the decision to gather virtually this year.

While 2020 brought new challenges, we are focusing on the silver lining! With the world in quarantine, we were able to grow our foster programs and focus on getting more of our long-term rescues into their forever homes. Without in-person events, we learned how to stay connected with our amazing supporters through online fundraisers and were able to build wonderful new relationships. Although we can’t be together in person, we want to celebrate another wonderful year of no-kill rescue and raise the vital funds needed to keep saving lives. The Faux FurBall will be an interactive digital experience where all of our

wonderful supporters are able to participate in a silent auction and paddle raise. For our local supporters, we are offering gourmet meal tickets where you can enjoy a fabulous meal or charcuterie prepared by the talented chefs at Wild Thyme Catering. Complimentary wine and VIP bags will be included in every order and each meal will be hand delivered by a H.A.L.O. volunteer. On November 30th, the paddle raise and silent auction all go live on the dedicated event page and the grand finale will be on Saturday, December 12th at 6:00 pm. Everyone who purchased a ticket will receive their fabulous gourmet meal, bidding ends on the auction and a video about the IMPACT you made goes live! Your support during this event will help ensure that H.A.L.O.’s lifesaving programs continue growing and allow us to save even more lives in 2021!

FRESH SEASONAL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES MANY ORGANIC SELECTIONS UNIQUE DECORATIVE GIFTS ORANGE SOFT-SERVE ICE CREAM LOCAL HONEY

We ship only the best, prize winning Indian River citrus grown right here in our own groves. All of our gifts are personally hand selected and packed by our family to create the perfect gift for yours and shipped directly to their door. In November, we begin our gift fruit shipping season with our seedless Navel Oranges, seedless Ruby Red Grapefruit, Fall Glo Tangerines and Florida Tangelos just in time for Thanksgiving.

In December, we begin harvesting the always popular seedless Red Navel Oranges in time for Christmas and Chanukah gift baskets. Many folks like to customize their fruit shipments to include our tropical marmalades, jellies, coconut patties and citrus candies to make their gifts a little extra special.

Youth Sailing Foundation Partners with Youth Guidance in Boat Repair Apprentice Program

Youth Sailing Foundation (YSF) has introduced a Boat Repair Apprentice Program to provide one on one guidance and mentoring to a group of children from Youth Guidance (YG). Each week five apprentice boat repair trainees come to YSF with Phil and a YG mentor to learn maritime trade skills ranging from boat bottom painting to engine maintenance. YSF has a volunteer workforce of thirty highly skilled volunteers who repair and maintain a fleet of 75 sail and 10 safety boats. Operating a small shipyard, YSF has all the tools and machinery required to apprentice young people in the maritime trades.

Paul and Layloni learn to take apart a fly-wheel with Mike Mariotti, YSF’s mentor and teacher

The collaboration is the result of YG Executive Director Phil Barnes and his counterpart at YSF, Stu Keiller, discussing restoration of boat Youth Guidance was receiving from a donor. Youth Guidance had recently started a bike repair program. The two Executive Director’s quickly concluded Youth Sailing Foundation could leverage its expertise and facilities to provide a similar opportunity in boat repair. After just a few sessions with YSF volunteers Robert Klimeck and Mike Mariotti it became apparent that the youngsters from Youth Guidance were imparting as much fun and inspiration to these two highly skilled senior mechanics as they were instructing the children. As Robert told Stu Keiller, “I will take these five kids every day of the week. You won’t believe how much they accomplished in one hour. They were focused and wanted to learn. Mike and I want to continue with this group after the 10-week term concludes. They are joy to work with.”

With drive-in movie showings on the rise, we look forward to offering a safe, feel-good way to bring the community together,” says Angelia Perry, GYAC Executive Director. The drive-in movie will take place at Riverside Park on Friday, November 13 at 6:00 p.m. To make admission affordable for families, GYAC will charge $10 per carload. Details can be found online at gyac.net. “We hope that you will decide to join us as we set out to bring a message of hope and kindness to our neighbors,” proposes Peggy Gibbs, GYAC’s Director of Philanthropy. “It’s just the message needed during these difficult times.” Follow GYAC’s social media pages to find out which film they plan to feature on the big screen!
