“The negative effect of Lagoon pollution should be clear to everyone. It is a health issue, a quality of life issue and a property value issue. As your Property Appraiser, I will be on constant watch to warn all political bodies of just how important the health of our Lagoon has become in terms of property value and tax revenue. I will remind them that failure to address the health of the lagoon will cost more than what we spend to save it.”

Why Are We Called The “Treasure Coast”? On July 24th, 1715 a fleet of Spanish ships laden with treasure sailed Florida’s east coast right into the path of a fierce hurricane. By the morning of July 31st, the fleet and treasure was lost to the sea. On the 301st anniversary of this fateful voyage, Pirates, Privateers and Treasure Hunters of all ages will gather in Vero Beach to begin the annual commemoration of the loss of the 1715 Treasure Fleet in a fun-filled and family friendly celebration of piracy to be better known as the 2nd Annual Vero Beach Pirate Festival. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s Vero Beach Pirate Fest will benefit local 501 cc)(3) charity, the “Vero Beach Lifeguard Association” who will use these donations to purchase an ATV for emergencies, making the beaches of Vero Beach safe. The Festival will also provide aplatform to help several organizations that support the local community.

SAFETY TIPS FOR ADULTS TO SUCCESSFULLY AGE IN PLACE By Jenny Streibick, RN
According to the National Council of Aging (NCOA), falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs. However, falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Through practical lifestyle adjustments the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state:
• One-third of Americans aged 65+ fall each year
• Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall
• Every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall
• Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and most common cause of non-fatal, trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults
• The financial toll for older adult falls is expected to increase as the population ages and may reach $67.7 billion by 2020
Falls, with or without injury also carry a heavy quality of life impact. A growing number of older adults fear falling and as a result limit their activities. This can result in further social, physical decline, depression, social isolation and feelings of helplessness. A recent survey of senior home safety has revealed that home isn’t always the safe haven that seniors and their loved ones dream about. It has been reported that 85% of seniors have done nothing to prepare
their home for aging. Adult children, their aging parents and emergency room doctors don’t always see things the same way as evidenced by 100% of ER doctors in the U.S. and Canada reporting it’s very important for adult children to take one day each year to perform a safety check of their aging parents’ homes but in the last year, only 44% have done this. Vero Beach, Florida resident Linda M. is a textbook example of an adult trying to age in place but was in need of a home safety assessment, which when performed by the professionals of Extended Hands of the Treasure Coast, ultimately indicated that with a few simple home modifications such as adding grab bars in her bathroom and shower, removal of throw rugs which were tripping hazards and de-cluttering and organization of her living space, she is now able to stay in her home where she is comfortable and maintains her independence. Extended Hands of the Treasure Coast (EHOTC) strives to help all aging adults do exactly that. We will identify hazardous areas in your senior loved one’s home, ways to fix them and ways to prevent accidents from happening. We are committed to offering a reliable and affordable solution to all your in home needs whether it be safety checks, bill pay assistance, home repairs/modifications or organizing and estate liquidation. Restaurant Review: C.J. Cannon’s Restaurant & Lounge We have found this restaurant to be a diamond gem. Location is right on the airport ramp. Breakfast and lunch specials are quite tasty. Dinners are relaxing and the food has always exceeded our expectations. A great place to bring family. What a dinner on our night of this review! Walked in, super busy…45 minute wait. Our server told us about some seats that we could have in their lobby/parlor and eat a full meal there. We ordered chili potato skins, 12 oz NY strip & the ribs and chicken salad plate. We also added a crab cake & scampi to the dinners as well. WOW. Huge portions, fantastic service from our server & great live music on this particular night! This place is in the Vero beach top ten list of great restaurants! We will be back! C.J. Cannon’s has been at the municipal airport for over 30 years, and I have never been there when it wasn’t crowded. I usually eat lunch on Wednesdays with a civic group. We have a “permanent reservation” at the same table, and all the tables are usually taken, and turn over while we are eating. There are also a couple of private rooms, which usually have various clubs eating in them. The menu covers all bases for breakfast, lunch and dinner.....all kinds of sandwiches....many salads....comfort food....southern food.... Italian food…seafood…steaks…ribs, and of course a great breakfast menu.
