Joseph Semprevivo: From Teenage Cookie King to Revitalizing the Indian River Mall By Debbi Goodman Venturina
Joseph Semprevivo came from very humble beginnings and has journeyed to making millions from cookies to founding Joseph's Premiere Real Estate, LLC (JPRE, LLC) in Sebastian and Vero Beach.
Joseph’s family lived in poverty, experiencing life-threatening illness and near fatal accidents. Losing the family home, Joseph’s family often didn’t have enough to eat. There were many nights that his mom sacrificed and did not eat so there would be enough for her children. At nine years old, Joseph was diagnosed with diabetes. He didn’t eat any sugar for three years when one day Joseph ate a sugar free cookie, and an empire was born. Instead of feeling downtrodden, Joseph found the rainbow after the storm. After his parents created the first sugar free ice cream on the market. Joseph made his favorite oatmeal cookie sugar free and Joseph’s Lite Cookies was born. Together with his parents, Joseph went store to store, city by city and to thousands of independent stores until they distributed their cookies to Kroger and Whole Foods. In 2003 Joseph went on to QVC and sold what would become the most successful cookie in QVC history. President Bush awarded Joseph the American Success Award, in the Rose Garden.
President Ronald Regan with Joseph
The transition from the cookie business to real estate is also a testimony to Joseph’s character. When accompanying his parents to their realtor’s office, Joseph being no stranger to contracts and negotiations, was dismayed at how the realtor interacted with his parents. The realtor challenged Joseph. If he thought he could do it better, he should become a realtor. Within hours Joseph was enrolled online for real estate classes, which he completed two days later. He then passed the state licensure on his first attempt. Joseph’s Premier Real Estate. LLC is owned and managed by Joseph Semprevivo, who is one of the only Non Competing Brokers in Indian River County who has earned his Master’s Degree in Finance, International Real Estate Development, as well as a Master’s Degree in Marketing, Management and Professional Development. Joseph serves as an adjunct professor in

mall, with lunches provided for kids from local schools and their families. They also underwrite community programs including local 4H groups, donating thousands in sponsorships, as well as in team shirts and supplies.
JPRE, LLC is officed inside the Indian River Mall in Vero Beach. Joseph is the core realtor revitalizing the mall. His firm is exclusively able to negotiate leases with the mall management. As many traditional chain stores are going out of business, Joseph and his team have been able to bring new boutique shops and non-traditional tenants including nonprofits like Little Birthday Angels and churches to the mall. Hyundai is one such major addition. Joseph's Premier Real Estate team has placed 12 stores in the Indian River Mall in just a couple month period.
In 2019 Joseph and his father, Larry, co-authored their best-selling and award-winning memoir chronicling their family’s journey: Madness, Miracles, Millions. Demonstrating that with real sacrifice and hard work, anyone can realize their dreams. Joseph and his wonderful wife, Memory, have eight children all under the age of 14.
The Indian River Mall has increased foot traffic to about 800 people on weekdays and over 2000 people on weekends. JPRE, LLC currently sponsors chess tournaments in the

Can I Boost My 401(k) Savings without Contributing More? From 2006 to 2012, Aon Hewitt and Financial Engines conducted a study where they compared the returns of investors who sought help in the form of online sources or managed accounts to those who managed their 401(k)s themselves. In fact, “Participants who got Help received, on average, 3.32% (net of fees) more in return annually” than those who managed their own portfolios.¹ Take a look below to see the potential of adding 3% more to your 401(k) over time.

The Caribbean Court Boutique Resort: Your Tropical Beach Oasis On Ocean Drive in Vero’s South Beach, just south of 17th Street Causeway, sits the unique Caribbean Court Boutique Resort.
In the lobby sits a portfolio of before and after photos of the transformation from the sea of concrete to the lush tropical oasis. This was nothing short of creative genius . . . and back breaking work. Fast forward to a world with Co-Vid, the oasis created by Boris Gonzalez is facing the toughest environment in its history of hospitality. The Caribbean Court Boutique Resort fine dining restaurant, Maison Martinique, and Havana Nights Piano Bar, now operate with a heightened awareness for the
safety of their patrons. The resort has designed and altered the various dining rooms to maintain Co-Vid spacing protocol and allow guests to safely socialize. The Resort accepts reservations for private parties with dance music and a party bar. Allowing the hosts to invite 35 guests, create their own menu from hors d'oeuvres to a 5-course dinner, and still party with social distancing. The main dining room in Maison Martinique is large, romantic and elegant. In the center of the dining room hang a dozen crystal chandeliers, creating an ethereal aura in the room. The room was previously rented by a guest for a candlelight dinner for 12 ladies. She brought an MP3 with music from the Rat Pack and hired dancers to dance with her guests.
The Fountain Patio with spacious seating, large canopies and shimmering torch lights, creates the perfect alfresco experience, is also available for a private gathering of friends. At night and at poolside, guests view towering lit palm trees swaying in the moonlight around the inviting heated pool. From the deck of Havana Nights Piano Bar, guests dine under a lit canopy and moonlight with sounds of the ocean. Situated less than 100 feet from the beach, the Caribbean Court Boutique Resort enjoys a constant flow of fresh ocean air winding through the halls and archways day and night. This resort is special… There are 18 hotel rooms, some with balconies or terraces, and dog friendly rooms. Reserve one room, or the
entire resort. A Florida soccer team booked the hotel for four days last fall. Screams of delight constantly emanated from the pool area. They had a blast! The CCBR is excited to introduce Joseph Hastings as the new resort chef in 2021. He previously worked at Louie Bossi’s Ristorante in Fort Lauderdale. Chef Joseph prides himself on his abilities to cook with only fresh ingredients in a “scratch kitchen.” Take out food is also available. The resort encourages the public to enjoy their many venues. FOR FOOD LOVERS – “FARM FRESH WITHOUT THE FARM. By Jason P. Conklin
We are all drawn to what is refreshing, clean, and lush.
It is a natural tendency to look at spaces that are green and cultivated with a sense of peace and tranquility. It brings up our mood and our overall sense of wellbeing. What better complement to fresh food on the table, then to have it growing right next to you? Recent efforts to tackle the challenge of the urban garden have often fell flat and those that had success, had so at a prohibitve cost that was ultimately unsustainable. The resulting failure caused many to lose interest and abandon the idea of urban farming altogether. Argo Sciences, Inc. has been implementing and testing aeroponic systems in Vero Beach to specifically adapt and overcome the local environmental challenges we face here with our specific climate, water, and air quality. At the Polo Grill recently reopening on the island, I am pleased to tell you that we have done it! The aeroponic towers are providing much of herbs and microgreens for the restaurant with the added benefit of giving the atmosphere a boost. The live green plants bring a sense of fresh air to the dining experience. The concrete jungles in which we spend so much of our time have created an unhealthy disconnect between us humans and our natural environment.
The maintenance and cost of soil based gardeneng along with the potential inconveneince of pests, fungus and messy infrastructure made it prohibitve to undertake urban farming.
This is no longer the case and this movement is continually improving. Aeroponic systems are soilless and produce a higher nutrient crop without the chemical additives of large scale agriculture and virtually eliminating the risks of crop contamination. Now you can be enjoying your dinner right alongside the very plants you are eating from. Most notably, the systems can be adapted to accommodate nearly any space. The implementation of a greenwall is anticipated for this Summer 2021.

A Wholistic approach to healing Let us start at the beginning. A naturopathic doctor is a practitioner of naturopathic medicine. This is a system of primary health care focused on treating and preventing illness using the healing powers of nature. Naturopathic doctors treat holistically by looking at each patient as a whole person. This is much different than only focusing on symptoms or disease. This includes consideration of multiple factors that collectively comprise a person’s overall health. Some of these include a combination of genetics, environmental exposures, lifestyle habits, diet, exercise history, and social/emotional factors. Ultimately the goal of naturopathic care is restoring balance in the body to support its natural healing process. At its core, naturopathic medicine is distinguished by six underlying principles: 1. First, Do No Harm: use the most natural, least invasive, and least toxic therapies.
2. The Healing Power of Nature: Trust in the body's inherent wisdom to heal itself. 3. Identify and Treat the Causes: Look beyond the symptoms to the underlying cause. 4. Doctor as Teacher: Educate patients about the steps to achieving and maintaining health. 5. Treat the Whole Person: View the body as an integrated whole in all its physical and spiritual dimensions. 6. Prevention: Focus on overall health, wellness, and disease prevention. For the millions of Americans living with chronic conditions, a naturopathic doctor’s goal is to provide relief by offering holistic perspectives and treatment options. They can address a broad range of chronic health issues such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, respiratory conditions, fertility issues, menopause, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Diamonds in the Rough A great deal has changed in the past year.
One thing that holds fast is the need for a supportive environment for men seeking to lift themselves out of homelessness and transform their lives. Camp Haven invites the community to attend the nonprofit’s eighth annual Diamonds in the Rough Virtual Gala. This year, however, you won’t have to leave the comfort of your home. On Jan. 28, at 7 p.m., we will celebrate our success via a virtual event. Log on using the link at camphaven.net to hear firsthand accounts about the difference we are making in these men’s lives. This year’s Diamond Award recipient will be announced acknowledging contributions to the benefit of the homeless in Indian River County. Through the generosity of local sponsors, we have a spectacular array of silent and live auction items. Proceeds from the auction will support Camp Haven’s mission to transform homeless men’s. “It’s more important than ever that we continue to support the mission,” said Gordon Stewart, Camp Haven board president. “There are more than 1,500 homeless on the Treasure Coast, which is the highest percentage in the country of homeless men per population.” In the last six years, Camp Haven has helped more than 200 homeless men rejoin society as self-sustaining members able to take care of themselves, provide their own housing and food, and gain employment.
Debbie Lewis and Linda Teetz (front) with Jermey Gable, Brenda Sposato, Brenda and Chuck Bradley. (Not pictured Gordon Stewart)
“We need more funds so that we can keep expanding that operation. We don’t want Vero to turn into a tent city like San Francisco. We want to create opportunities for those that can be helped,” continued Stewart. Auction items include gift certificates, jewelry, furniture, an African Safari, use of a lakeside/mountain home in Coeur d’Alene, antique phone booth and a 1950 Willys Jeepster. Items will be available for perusal beginning Jan. 7, with bidding opening on Jan. 14. The transitional home provides supportive living opportunities and education to adults committed to rising out of homelessness. By implementing a thoughtful intake procedure, and strict adherence to guidelines, residents in our program, receive educational opportunities, counseling, and encouragement. “We hope to raise awareness about the work we do at Camp Haven. We have some very intriguing auction items from all price ranges that we think will make people want to tune in,” said Stewart. For information, visit camphaven.net.

Hibiscus Career Pathways Program Changing the Future for Our Youth The Hibiscus Village in Vero Beach provides a safe haven to abused youth, ages 13-17 years, in a safe and familylike environment. The teens receive mental health, medical and educational services provided by trauma-trained staff. In addition, youth participate in the Career Pathways to Independence Program, a positive youth development program that encourages academic achievement by developing life skills and job readiness training. Our youth are strongly encouraged to stay in school or receive their GED diploma and on-site educational services along with tutoring are provided. Last year, 87 youth were served at the Village with 78 participating in the career preparation component. This resulted in 100% of the participating teens improving their career-related, independent living and/or life skills knowledge. *Jenna (name changed for privacy), a 16-year old teen, was placed at Hibiscus Children’s Center with her younger sister and lived at the Village for almost two years. She was behind in school and struggled to overcome a personal tragedy she had recently experienced. Through the caring staff and volunteers, along with professional mental health counseling, Jenna was able to conquer her difficulties and

became very focused on her schoolwork. The Career Pathways Program was a guide and encouragement to help Jenna move forward with her education and preparing for the future. She worked diligently to catch up in school by taking Florida Virtual classes and she did a great job! During this time, she also secured employment at a local restaurant. Jenna is a great example of a youth who had to overcome tragedy and difficulties, the trauma of abuse and the instability of moving around in the foster care system. Educational and career preparation training was a priority and resulted in Jenna graduating high school and applying for academic scholarships to attend college, which, we are excited to share, she did receive. We are so proud of Jenna and all the youth just like her who work so hard to build a stronger
future after experiencing trauma and heartache. The Career Pathways Program and our wonderful community’s support help to provide youth with opportunities to strengthen and enhance their academic development and set the foundation for a bright future. All youth deserve the opportunities that Jenna received to move forward in life and grow into their fullest potential. Hibiscus is thankful for our Career Pathways partners and we welcome our community to provide internships/employment for our youth, as well as sharing your expertise as a guest speaker. For more information about how you can get involved and help teens like Jenna, please visit us at HibiscusChildrensCenter.org or contact Frank Avilla, Director of Career Pathways, at (772) 299-6011, ext. 387.

The Buggy Bunch Family Center Update
A Center of Hope … Transforming lives. Supporting families. Connecting communities. A hub for amazing transformations and renewed hope, The Buggy Bunch Family Center is located in an art deco-inspired historic building at the corner of 21st Street and 15th Avenue –
the former Vero Beach Furniture Mart property. The central location provides the perfect balance of “Old Vero” small town charm with the conveniences of a vibrant and growing downtown. This new Family Center will be a one-stop resource for moms and their families to receive programming and services to support their physical, mental, and spiritual health. This dedicated space and ability to offer services any time of day, any day of the week will allow The Buggy Bunch to vastly expand the number of families we can help throughout the community.
The Buggy Bunch was recently the recipient of a $50,000 matching capital grant from the Indian River Community Foundation. This grant, along with hundreds of generous donors like yourselves, have made this dream now become a reality... We are elated to announce that we have reached our goal to complete the full renovation of our building! In fact, our contractor, Pinnacle Construction, is well under way with the remodel and we anticipate moving in mid-2021. The Buggy Bunch Family Center will be more than bricks and mortar – it will be 6,000 square feet of hope. A home for transformation, support, and community. A place to deepen relationships and engage even more families while continuing to instill a strong sense of faith.

Talking About End-of-Life Matters
99991281/HHA21276095/HPC5038096 • Hospice License Issued in 1986
As we age, we plan for retirement, travel, holidays and leisure activities; however, the end-of-life discussion is avoided, shelved and put on the back burner because facing one’s own mortality is difficult and uncomfortable. Put your mind at ease. Although having that conversation with loved ones is better sooner rather than later, it’s something to do when you’re ready. It’s a process which begins by taking time to reflect on your life and making notes about what’s most important to you. It’s not something you have to share with anyone, not yet. If you haven’t started thinking about your end-of-life goals and wishes, make it a New Year’s Resolution whether you journal privately, talk to a trusted friend or write private letters you’ll never send. Consider doing something that will help you organize your priorities and project your thoughts and feelings. Part of the end-of-life discussion includes deciding what you want to happen should you become chronical-
ly or terminally ill. For example, who do you want making financial and medical decisions on your behalf? If you are diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, are there treatments you would or wouldn’t want to pursue? Under what circumstances would you choose to forgo treatment and receive comfort care? Where would you prefer to spend your last days? Do you have spiritual preferences? These are just some of the items needing your attention when thinking about preparing for the end-of-life conversation. It’s about peace of mind knowing your loved ones understand your future wishes, goals and desires. With a clearer picture, you can more comfortably take the next step to decide with whom you’ll share this information and how. It’s not the stereotypical pull everyone in a room I have something to tell you, chat. It’s about the people in your life who are important to you and what you’ll want them to know and do. Think about places you’ll want to have those conversations, where you’ll be most comfortable: in the privacy or your home, a church, park or even a restaurant. You can do this! End-of-life matters. Prepare, plan and talk to your loved ones now before you are faced with a health crisis. For more information about the end-oflife discussion, visit www.vnatc.com or call 772-410.3628.

Let’s Eat! Treasure Coast Culinary Tours By Susan Harris
Whether you are a local, tourist or visitor, and you want to learn about the "off the beaten track" restaurants with a tour guide who will give you the low down on our local culinary hotspots – Debbi Goodman Venturina is your girl! She loves to tell the secrets of the tastiest places in town and you get to sample their wares. What's even more fun is you are part of a group and you get to explore together. There's safety in numbers, as they say, and I had fun touring with a honeymooning couple from Kentucky.
In fact, the newlyweds had so much fun on the Delicious Downtown Vero Beach Culinary Tour that they are returning to area for their next vacation and plan on taking both the Sebastian and Fort Pierce food tours. Entertaining, breezy and delightful, Ms. Venturina aims to please as she introduces you to the chefs and owners and you hear their tales and share their visions. Bon Appetit! Tell them Susan sent you. For more info or to book your tour today, visit www.treasurecoastculinarytours.com or call (772) 999-6141.

Holiday Soirées help pass on hope to others When the Covid-19 pandemic began, it became clear to charities worldwide that normal operations methods would have to change, and quickly. The Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach was no exception. Unfortunately, there was no operational map to follow in this uncharted territory. The Refuge’s leadership knew we would no longer be able to count on our major fundraiser—The Women’s Refuge Third Annual Christmas Banquet. So, when the Refuge’s Board and committee members decided to postpone the banquet until 2021, their creative minds came together to, instead, launch a series of private dinner parties. With these Holiday Soirées, various Refuge supporters will volunteer their homes to host unusual culinary events, all with multiple themes, virtual auctions, and unique entertainment. The Women’s Refuge is sincerely grateful to all who came out to support our ministry. Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus. And thank you for believing in our mission as we provide help, hope and lifelong healing for the emotionally, mentally and spiritually wounded. Restaurant Review:
Refreshing Beachside Eats: The Polo Grill By Susan Harris
It’s always a good sign when the appetizers sound so delicious on a restaurant's menu that you can't decide which to choose, but that's the fun of trying a new place. The Polo Grill on Ocean Drive in Vero Beach is the new place with Bill Brown (formerly of The Patio) at the helm. It’s a new American Steakhouse with the theme of Steak, Wine and Crudo. Crudo in Italian means raw and the idea is that the food should be fresh and light. The ambiance is fresh and light too (yet cozy) which made our party feel right at home. As an example, the Polo Grill will be rotating fresh oysters every week from different parts of the country.
Photos by Scott Finney Vegetables might be from their hydroponic garden. The alfresco veranda (covered patio) is enchanting with its ample seating and is a perfect place to dine and people watch. They will be building a bar that will blend the best of the inside and outside, which will serve their fresh handcrafted cocktails and whimsical wine list. They already feature a collection of bourbons and aged sipping rums. The culinary team (with their former restaurants in parenthesis) is led by Scott R. (Ocean Grill), Joe D. (Windsor Club), Brent B (The Amalfi Grill), Heath B. (The Patio) and Tyler K. (Chef Michaels). It's a stellar cast in the kitchen!
The Polo Grill is located on Osean rive, steps away from the ocean and beachside shopping
Back to the menu, my choice for an appetizer after a discussion with Greg, our well informed and enthusiastic waiter, was the Calamari Fries made with julienne calamari steak that is flash fried and served with a sriracha beurre blanc, drop peppers and capers. Absolutely lovely! It was probably the best calamari that I have had, on this side of the Atlantic. The Ahi Stack was our other choice, which is a poke style ahi tuna with avocado, sesame, wonton and mango. Another crowd pleaser that was voted refreshing.
Calamari Fries
The Chop Chop Salad, which has cucumber around its circumference, was lively with a tasty lemon dijon vinaigrette. It was fresh and it seemed to me to be straight from the garden. Our lobster bisque was served in a UFO bowl and received a thumb’s up. (I was this close to saying it was out of this world, which it was!) Then we had to pick our main course. I chose the 7oz. Filet Mignon from Revier Ranch in Minnesota. They promised the best beef and they delivered. My medium-rare steak was served on a bed of pink Himalayan salt with truffle potato au gratin. Both the potato and the steak were superb and cooked correctly. (Don't miss the potato au gratin! You can order it as a side - pure BLISS!)

Roasted Faroe Island Salmon
Roasted Faroe Island Salmon was our other choice. Its brown sugar ancho (pepper) rubbed with a tomato avocado salsa over a brown rice and red quinoa pilaf with a black bean puree. Salmon is never my first choice, but I would have to say it was tasty and our salmon connoisseur said it was delicious and fresh. And though you wouldn't believe it we still had to have dessert. It called to us. Who can resist Tiramisu or a Key Lime Tart with macadamia crust (very different) and meringue topping? We couldn't and it's a good thing that we didn't. The Key Lime Tart is a scene stealer, even people who don't like sweets wanted more. I found that the Polo Grill was that surprising restaurant with a big city vibe that fit perfectly into our beautiful beachside village. Open Sunday through Thursday from 4:30pm to 9pm and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights. To reserve a table please call (772) 231-4090 or online at pgvero.com.

How Can Hatha Yoga Improve My Health and Well Being? by Pat Murray Bikram Beginning Series is a low impact, heated, 90 minute class using Hatha Yoga postures handed down for thousands of years from master to disciple, one to one. Bishnu Ghosh was Bikram Choudhury’s teacher. Ghosh scientifically established methods of curing chronic disease using Hatha Yoga. Bikram put together a sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises in a specific order taught to groups of people rather than one to one so that he could help more people. As long as you follow the step by step instructions, even if you can only do part of the posture, you get 100% benefit. How you try is the single most important factor in the benefits you receive. When you start a posture or come out of a posture, you must do so slowly. Each time you come to class, you experience the same 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. This yoga is a process based on consistent practice. Three times a week is a fantastic maintenance regime. Commit to two months to experience amazing benefits. You develop faith, self-discipline, determination, concentration, and patience to do these postures correctly. Every body is different. If you are strong (typically men or athletes of either sex) chances are you need to work on flexibility. If you are flexible (typically dancers and gymnasts, non-athletic students) you need to work on strength. The series helps you develop strength, flexibility and balance.
The body can take up to two weeks to physiologically acclimatize to the heat. When you do Hatha Yoga postures in the heat, your body is malleable. You are changing the construction of your body. By the time you have completed a class, you will have worked every muscle and joint, massaged internal organs, improved your breathing and circulation. The series develops core strength, improves spine health, boosts the immune system, reduces stress and even provides relaxation. More information about the practice, new student tips, posture benefits, testimonials, class sign up and daily schedule can be found on the website indianriverbikram.com. Introductory special for first time visitors is 5 Classes for $35. Open 7 days a week and located just south of Vatland Honda. Call Pat Murray 772-925-9697 for further information.

Each December since 1992, on National Wreaths Across America Day, more than 2,100 participating locations across the nation coordinate wreath-laying ceremonies to commemorate the sacrifices of our country’s fallen heroes. On Dec. 19, Joe and Sue Crowley with the Crowley Team of Keller Williams Realty's, Wreaths Across America (WAA) of Indian River County hosted a ceremony at Memorial Island and Crestlawn Cemetery. WAA is a national non-profit whose mission is to remember, honor and teach about those that have served for this great nation. Attitude of Gratitude Provides Even More Support for Survivors Like every individual, business, and nonprofit organization, The Inner Truth Project has had some struggles over the last few months. It has been a time to remember why we really call ourselves “survivors” and tap into our grit, resilience, and hope. And like so many others, we have found that our new challenges have been daily gifts if we are willing to be vulnerable, imaginative, and take some risks. Not only have we created more programs and unique to reach survivors and their families, but we received more funding too. The Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County, a long-time funder, increased its financial support. We were awarded the inaugural We See You Grant
Fund from the national Just Beginnings Collaborative, and we received the prestigious Gannett Grant Award! Additionally, we held our first ever Bagels & Bowties Men’s Breakfast as a call to action to bring notable men from the community into the conversation to end gender violence. Sponsors included Cardita Formal Wear, Bagel Bites Palm City, and Bagel Brothers Tradition. The Andrew and Robin Hunt Philanthropic Fund at The Community Foundation Martin-St. Lucie awarded a matching grant for the breakfast to support the movement and help us on our journey to change the male narrative surrounding gender violence. With the help of the sponsors and more than fifty fearless men in the community including State

Attorney Bruce Colton, St. Lucie County Superintendent Wayne Gent, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara, U.S. Congressman Brian Mast, St. Lucie County Commissioner Sean Mitchell, Port St. Lucie Mayor Greg Oravec, State Representative Toby Overdorf, St. Lucie Clerk of Courts Joe Smith, and VicePresident of Student Affairs at Indian River State College Frank Watkins, the breakfast raised over $8,000. Because of all of the community support and outpouring of love, The Inner Truth Project is proud to announce the realization of one of our long view goals, to have a therapist and case manager on staff! We are beyond happy to introduce you to therapist Sara Giza and Case Manager Belinda Strachan, our new ITP members who are dedicated to our mission of empowering, supporting, and educating survivors and their families.
We are also delighted to share that Ginger Miranda, Esq. has joined our Board of Directors and has already hit the ground running by sharing her extensive background in the justice system. As we head into what is the beginning of a very unorthodox holiday season, we are more thankful than ever for donors who choose to become part of the healing journey for so many individuals and families in our community. A $100 donation provides a survivor and their family with direct services including individual therapy and workshops on healing strategies. If you are a survivor or family member in need our services and support or if you would like to share a donation during the holiday season, please know that you can donate safely and securely in any amount simply by visiting The Inner Truth Project at www.innertruthproject.org.

Friends hosts virtual Women in the Arts Festival in Celebration of International Women’s Day. Mark your calendar for the Women in the Arts Festival on Saturday, March 6th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and join Friends After Diagnosis as they recognize International Women’s Day (IWD) with a virtual event full of celebration, including music, dance, poetry and motivational sharing. This free event will feature folk singer/ songwriter Cosy Sheridan, who first appeared on the national folk scene in 1992 when she won the songwriting contests at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival. She continues to be one of the most prolific songwriters in the folk scene with My Fence & My Neighbor coming in at number four on the folk radio charts in 2018. The featured speaker will be Rev. Dr. Crystal Bujol (pictured below), Founder & Artistic Director of the Gifford Youth Orchestra. Dr. Bujol will share her personal story, “A Journey with Cancer: Music to Carry Us Above and Beyond”. Other planned activities include poetry reading by Pat Draper of the Laura (Riding)
Jackson Foundation and Friends in Motion performances under the direction of Peggy Hamilton, Goodlife Fitness. IWD is a global day of recognition with a history that reaches back more than a century, before women in the United States gained the right to vote in 1920. It provides an occasion for celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and scientific achievements of women, and for making a call to action to accelerate the move toward gender equality. Supporters of this year’s IWD event (as of December 8) include: George E. Warren Corporation, SkinSelect MD, American Association of University Women (AAUW), Block and Scarpa Attorneys-At-Law, and Bay Street Pharmacy. Join the virtual IWD Women in the Arts Festival by visiting FriendsAfterDiagnosis.com and clicking on the link to be found on the home page of the website. You may join in at any time from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friends After Diagnosis serves women with cancer, others with breast cancer, and their caregivers through four monthly support meetings, education, and wellness programming offered free of charge.

Spotlight on supporting local musicians and music venues by Brian Blatz In these times, we have to give extra love and compassion to the local musicians and entertainers who have touched our lives by transferring so much energy and love of music to audiences through the years. As a lifelong professional piano/singer, I'm used to being at events and occasions when people are at their most joyous. Our lives are filled with fun and happy experiences as a "matter of course" by entertaining 3 to 7 nights a week. It's the best thing in the human experience, so we feel it more when we're not only prevented from performing but also earning a living, albeit a meager one. As musicians, we dared to follow our dreams. We can't be forgotten about, especially in an area where the arts are so heralded. So what can I do besides some live streams that early on in the pandemic were received positively but wasn't a real adequate solution in the end and interest naturally wanes? Well, I asked David and Elizabeth Moshier if I could highlight some local venues dedicated to preserving live music during these challenging times. They were amenable to the suggestion. With this issue, let us give some love to a couple of venues and people who have
been vigilant in providing an outlet for some local musicians. Ono Luau is a Hawaiian themed restaurant in Vero's downtown historic district on 13th street featuring live entertainment since there opening slightly over two years ago. They feature a fire spinner/ show every Friday night! Very exciting and unique in this area for sure. On Sundays, they have real authentic Ha-
waiian music with world-class ukulele players from Hawaii. This is an awesome fun time, unique, especially in the relaxing indoor/outdoor confines of the main patio! Early this summer, they expanded nights of live entertainment to include Thursdays and Saturdays. You must try this place. It has a fantastic, one of a kind menu in this town that must be explored and savored to truly enjoy the concept of traditional simple healthy flavors that come from the heart and ancient knowledge. Grind and Grape have live music every night of the week. This Beachside restaurant/cafe has a reputation for featuring various wide-ranging entertainment for years as well as tasty flatbreads, sandwiches, and pastries—a great meetup place to unwind and or celebrate. I want to mention a couple of people who are helping to enrich our local culture. Crystal Ploszay of Unicorn Epoxy does a live stream on Sundays starting at 10 a.m. as a way to help local musicians get exposure and virtual tips! Since early in the Pandemic, Crystal has let them perform in her studio, which is quite awesome if you ask me! I challenge other local business owners to create outlets for talent in this area.
One more individual I'd like to mention who's a dedication to the local restaurant scene is extremely prolific is Thomas Miller of Vero Foodie. He has an awesome enthusiasm for unique restaurants, events, and food. I would encourage anyone interested in keeping up on hot new or good ole' places to enjoy life around town to visit/subscribe to his Facebook page! Keep up the good work, Thomas! If there were one thing I would suggest that people can do to keep music alive in their town is to actively help support local venues and encourage them to employ the great diverse musicians who have always been there, enriching your lives through the years by giving them a place to play at. And it doesn't always have to be a restaurant or club. It's being done safely already. Musicians need their audiences and visa versa. I would even suggest that those with means and the ability would reach out to local business owners trying to maintain live music and make a donation, perhaps. The music itself is so important to our culture and our souls. It must be maintained as it enriches us all

The Journey to Freedom at Dynamic Life In the letter the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, he shared, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”. (II Corinthians 5:17)
Anyone observing Michael “Nech” Davis over the past three years would have to agree on one thing. Nech -- pronounced ‘Neetch’ -- is a new man.
The Philadelphia native arrived in Florida in May 2018. He had hit rock bottom from drug and alcohol addiction, and he was ready to make a change. Dynamic Life Recovery Community – a 33-bed sober living facility that houses the recovery ministry of Freedom Journey Ministries in Vero Beach – gave him the opportunity to do that. It proved to be a good match. “Ever since I arrived, I fit in,” he recalled. He found a job, made friends with fellow residents and began attending the required five recovery meetings each week. Nech also started going to Freedom Church. One Sunday not long after his arrival, he gave his life to Christ in a worship service there. “And now I’m fully immersed in my faith in Jesus Christ and God Almighty.” He believes the gospel message is a key component in recovery. “Christ makes us forgivable. When we believe He can forgive us, we can begin to forgive ourselves.”
Nech, beforte & after
Ten months into his sobriety and missing his family, Nech began thinking about a return to Philadelphia. God and Freedom Church pastor Roger Ball had other plans for him. The position of house manager at Dynamic Life became open, and Ball invited Nech to take it on. Still thinking of a return to Pennsylvania, Nech hesitated. So, the pastor suggested he take the job temporarily. He wasn’t in the post for long when he decided, “God was calling me to serve here.” His service includes making himself available to help other men. “I’m there to come alongside them,” he explained. “I’m walking this journey with them.”

Nech also credits the great team he is part of in the Dynamic Life administration. Working alongside capable leaders allows him to focus on performing his role well. He feels that God is using the gifts he had and is giving him new gifts. “I never had confidence before.” Now, he noted, “My confidence grows as my faith grows, every day walking closer to the Spirit.” And every day adds one to his number of days of sobriety. They recently passed 925. “It feels like a tremendous accomplishment,” he said. People in recovery tell each other to make the journey one day at a time. Michael “Nech” Davis is making the journey with strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. “I’m being prepared for something greater.”
Pastor Ball pointed out that Nech is one of many success stories from Dynamic Life Recovery Community. “Nech is yet another example that with God nothing is impossible,” he said. “What God can do in these men’s lives inspired our team to take its next major step of purchasing the property and facilities. “With great expectation we now face an exciting future of expanding our resources to serve those struggling with addiction here in our community and then into other communities as the pandemic of drug addictions has already taken too many young lives. We are seeking local partnerships to help us carry on this mission.” Dynamic Life Recovery Community is seeking volunteers and financial support to expand this ministry and to help more of those needing a fresh start in life. To donate to these efforts, go to our website at www. dynamiclifevero.com or contact Pastor Roger Ball at 772-562-3185 ext. 2

Hometown Heroes...
Meet Cory Martin by Steve Glaser
Today, Cory is a son, husband, father, uncle, a retired firefighter, author, successful businessman and real estate investor, unique motivational speaker, and a friend and mentor to so many. But most importantly, Cory is a “good person” and truly strives to make a difference in our community. Cory’s story is certainly different than most. As a child, he was raised in South Vero in a multi-generational crack house. His Mom continually battled her own demons, while his dad died in prison after shooting a man. Sadly, at ten years old, Cory witnessed his grandfather killed by a shotgun blast in his own home. Cory himself almost died after being bitten by a rattlesnake. At twelve, Cory was excited about his first date. When
he showed up to the Skate Factory wearing patched jeans and an old hand me down shirt, his date made fun of him, refusing a second date. Around the same time, Cory’s neighbor labeled him and his family “White Trash” and told him he would never amount to anything. At 14, Cory quit school, accepted a dishwashing job at Golden Corral, and left home. He found an abandoned car behind Golden Corral, and that became his new home. Often, he would share that car with another homeless man. As bad as things were, Cory always remained a “good person.” Eventually, Cory received his GED and became a firefighter, a job he always dreamed about, knowing that he can help others. Cory
Dr. Nick Coppola, Steve Glaser, Margaret Mattingly, Melanie Coppola, David Moshier, and Paster Trever Raborn at "We Are Vero"
was blessed with a great career and received numerous commendations for bravery and outstanding service. In his early forties, his career came to an abrupt end after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s and unable to perform his daily duties fully. Today, through his home improvement/ handyman company, Rescue Me, Cory often employs the “unemployable.” Many are homeless, overcoming addictions, and even have been suicidal. One young lady that has been employed by Cory for about a year told me she was contemplating suicide before she met Cory. Another employee told me a similar story stating that he would be dead right now if it were not for Cory. Through friendship, Mentorship, and acts of kindness, Cory, has successfully transformed many lives. I met Cory just a few years ago through the innovative program, “Hear My Story,” sponsored by the Indian River County Board of Education. Cory is one of the featured speakers that volunteers to mentor struggling high school students and always stresses the importance of higher education and being a “good person.”
Cory, Judge Michael Linn, Ingrid Hernandez & Eric Seymour
Lastly, Cory is in the process of registering C-MAD as a nonprofit organization. C-MAD is a movement dedicated to empowering all men, women, and children to live better and more meaningful lives by spreading the power of optimism through education, Mentorship, and community outreach. Be sure to like and share our Facebook page..... C-MAD. We are all so blessed to be living in such a caring community surrounded by people like Cory Martin. Cory can be reached at (772) 633-0227 or by email, corymartin238@gmail.com.
