Putting the "care" back into healthcare By Jenn Stockdale
River’s Edge Direct Primary & Urgent Care is putting the “care” aspect back into healthcare and hopes that their way of treating patients will be a model for other communities to recreate and follow the trend. Hopeful? Perhaps. Practical? Especially if one does the math. The right thing to do? Dr. Chris Festa, Doctor of Nurse Practitioner (DNP), her staff, and her more than 300 patients certainly think so. Dr. Festa has been a medical provider for more than 20 years between the military and civilian life. Over the years, through her professional and personal experiences, she’s witnessed healthcare take a wrong direction in terms of patient care.
“Over the years, I’ve watched the frustration of patients, of medical providers, of anyone who was just at their wit’s end with being stuck in the system,” Dr. Festa explained. “It’s just become a toxic culture.” At River’s Edge Direct Primary Care, Dr. Festa sees patients on a primary care basis and an urgent care basis as needed – no insurance involved. No copays. One monthly fee, dependent on the patient’s age range. The Army veteran often gets asked the question, “But how are you going to live?” Unlike some others in the medical field, Dr. Festa won’t be seen driving a luxury vehicle, wearing flashy accessories, or living in a mansion – and she is totally okay with that. Given that the practice is nearly at its full capacity of membership patients, it’s safe to say the community has noticed and taken advantage of River’s Edge Direct Primary Care and its services offered. It was when Dr. Festa, herself, got sick and realized how impractical it was for her to have paid nearly $500K in insurance costs over the years, only to be told she would have to meet a seven thousand dollar deductible for her medical care, which would have to be approved by her insurance company each step of the way. “Insurance was designed for catastrophic use,” Dr. Festa explained. “You need to go to the emergency department for surgery, or you break an arm, or you need some sort of surgical procedure.”
At recent Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting, Priscilla Rodriguez, Business and Partner Development Coordinator and Amber Batchelor, President and CEO flank Dr. Chri Festa holding Suhka.
“I would travel to other countries and see how other countries simplified their medicine,” Dr. Festa said. She noticed that
there was more practical, affordable care elsewhere. "The doctors make a modest income,” Dr. Festa noted. “But they’re not making a fortune.” Comparatively, Dr. Festa explained that one doesn’t go college and become a teacher because they want to make lots of money. “You go to school to become a teacher because you want to enrich the minds of children, so that they can have a brighter future,” she said. “Healthcare should be no different.” She added that someone in ‘Corporate America,’ somewhere along the way, likely in the mid-1980s, realized that there was a lot of money to be made in the insurance industry. That caused ordinarily healthy individuals to pay a hefty monthly amount, have a huge deductible to meet, and then fear driven into their minds. They are locked into a system that Dr. Festa refers to as “sick care.” “They’re given a pill to treat a problem,” Dr. Festa said. “And then if there’s a reaction to that pill there’s a pill to treat that reaction, and so forth.” Patients who live in a “sick care,” or reactive care environment are using emergency rooms to band-aid an underlying problem that’s been exacerbated, and then sent to their primary care doctor for continued reactive care – with a copay for each visit.
Dr. Festa charges a flat monthly fee, which adds up to less than one thousand dollars per year, and proactively has a vested interest in each one of her patients’ health. Patients do not have to be members for urgent care services or for use of the IV lounge. She has no agenda, she has no scheme, she simply wants to truly care for the patients in a community that has cared for her over the last several years. She admits she utilized her life entire savings to make River’s Edge Direct Primary Care become a reality. “I went to the bank and they asked where my business plan was, and I said, ‘I have no plan, it’s in my head,’” she explained. As such, she found the building to run her office out of, bought all the equipment in it, and hired a small staff of medical professionals – who, like her, truly care. “My staff isn’t allowed to have bad days,” Dr. Festa said. Patients get treated with love and care the moment they walk through the door, whether it’s with a hug or friendly greeting, or cuddles from her office puppy, Suhka. Open seven days a week, River’s Edge Direct Primary Care and its staff are active members with the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce. The veteran-owned, female-led, LGBTQ-friendly medical office is located at 14060 US Hwy. 1 in Sebastian and can be contacted via electronic webform or directly at 772-202-2265.

Giving back after being given much By Katherine Bauman City Guide contributor
Vero Beach attorney Brian Connelly enjoys a challenge. It’s part of what has made him a successful personal injury trial lawyer in Indian River County for 25 years. It’s also part of the reason this 55-year-old decided to open his own practice in his hometown after 18 years with another local law firm. Connelly earned his undergraduate degree from the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and his law degree from Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida. He got his start with Vero Beach personal injury attorney Bill Frates. “He had a great reputation,” said Connelly. “I worked there for five years. It was a fantastic start.” Connelly went into personal injury law because of the satisfaction he gets in helping people during their times of need. “They don’t come to me at their best,” he said. “It’s typically after they’ve been injured in an automobile accident or seriously harmed by another’s wrongful conduct.” Connelly’s areas of focus are personal injury, wrongful death, product liability, and insurance litigation. “I like it when I can help a client get their life back on track, and in my world that typically means with money. Insurance companies don’t just give it away,” said Connelly. “I love what I do. I love helping people who are in need; it matters to me.”
Connelly is married to his high school sweetheart, Laurie, who is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. After graduating from Vero Beach High School, they both went to college in the Northeast, returning in 1995 after living in the Boston area for five years. “There wasn’t any doubt that we were going to come back to Vero Beach to live,” said Connelly. They have a son, Dalton, 23, a senior at the University of Florida, and a daughter, Claire, 20, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Connelly said his childhood had its challenges. “My folks didn’t have a lot of money,” he said. “After my parents divorced, my two brothers and I lived with my Dad, which was pretty much unheard of in the ‘70s. It was kind of like being raised in a frat house. But I found stability and support through sports, mainly football.”
He also got help from the Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy as the first mentee of the program, some 44 years ago. “I didn’t stay with the program very long, but I remember the help I received from it,” he said.
Connelly, who opened his practice 14 months ago, hasn’t missed a beat. He said a typical day is spent meeting with new clients, sitting down with existing clients to review their cases, in mediation or preparing for mediation or trial. “A greater percentage of cases get resolved without having to go to trial,” said Connelly. “But you often have to file a suit to get the proper focus on a case. I prepare every case if it were going to trial.”
Brian and Laurie are now paying it forward by supporting Youth Guidance as mentors of two boys for the past seven years. “Neither one has a father in their lives,” Connelly said. “We’re happy to welcome them into our lives and our family. They are there at many family events. They see how hard we work, and how hard my kids have worked to succeed. These two young men have benefited from that.” “We try hard to teach them that how success involves sacrifice,” Connelly said. “Whatever your definition of success, it comes with sacrifice. It takes a tremendous amount of time, effort and work. Whatever your long-term goal is, it will take sacrifice, such as not going out with your friends on Saturday night and staying home and studying,” he said. Laurie Connelly also works as Event Coordinator of the King of the Hill Tennis Tournament, a major fundraiser for Youth Guidance; and has been a board member the past three years. Brian Connelly also supports the Indian River Lacrosse Association, The ARC of Indian River County; was formerly a board member for the Mental Health Association of Indian River County, and served as a past president of the Indian River County Bar Association and as an Indian River County Pro Bono Liaison for the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit.
“I may look at 25 files on any given day,” said Connelly. “It can be challenging, but it’s important to let my clients know I’m there for them.” What’s been another challenging aspect to opening his own practice? “Learning the ‘business’ of being a lawyer,” said Connelly. “The business and administrative side of it.” Helping him with that is Amy Cone, who has been a paralegal for five years. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida and a Paralegal Certificate from the U.S. Career Institute. Connelly is Board Certified by the Florida Bar as a specialist in Civil Trial Law; and is recognized as a “Super Lawyer” on SuperLawyers.com, a rating service attained through peer recognition and professional achievement. He also maintains an “AV” rating, the highest rating conferred for legal ability and ethics from Martindale-Hubbell Law Director. Connelly can be reached by phone at 772-999-2061; by email at BConnelly@ ConnellyLawOffice.com; online at www. ConnellyLawOffice.com, or at his new office in the Downtown Office Center, 1201 19th Place, Suite B-200, Vero Beach.

Get Her While She’s Here Crystal Ploszay is making waves in the world as an artist, and people near and far are taking notice. The Vero Beach mother of two isn’t found with your ordinary canvas and easel with a paint pallet, however. Her medium can be anything from a private residence to a cruise ship, and nearly everything in between. Owner and head artisan of Unicorn Epoxy, Ploszay is a concrete and installation artist. “A lot of people think I paint on floors,” Ploszay said. Not the case. “We’re a professional coating company, and we’ve got all the best equipment in the industry to do so.” What this means is that Unicorn Epoxy installs floors using a variety of concrete coatings, including epoxy. Her way of doing so is particular and thorough, and she has been welcomed to other companies and seminars in other states to demonstrate her techniques and the professionalism that goes with what she does.
“The reason that I’m operating here in Vero is because I’m raising kids here and I want to stay close to home,” Ploszay said. Eventually she would like to be able to homeschool kids while she is on the road. Her children, Landon and Dahlia, are ages 13 and 12, and both are influenced heavily by their mother’s success, talent, and endurance as a business owner and concrete artist. “So, get me while I’m here,” Ploszay joked. In all actuality, the way in which her techniques and her work has spread on an international level is something Vero Beach’s community should take note of and schedule her to do work before she turns to a life on the road one day. Some of her most noteworthy local work includes Vero Beach’s historic Waldo’s, Mckee Botanical Garden, and Di Mare restaurant. “We brought the concrete work in the children’s garden to life at McKee Garden,” Ploszay said. She and her team did
the work at McKee in collaboration with Scenario, a multibillion-dollar international theme-building company that handles large-scale installations. Recently, Ploszay went to a national concrete conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she was excited to meet some of her biggest influences like Bob Harris, Darryl Bates, and Johnny Angel. When she arrived at the conference, she was awe-stricken to see that her role models were the ones who were excited to meet her. She was even invited to be on Darryl Bates’ podcast out of his concrete studio in Vegas, the only podcast in the industry, according to Ploszay. When she walked into his studio and realized the podcast equipment was set up and ready to go, she said she asked Bates what was going on. “He said, ‘I’m not gonna let Crystal Ploszay come all the way out to Vegas and not have her on my podcast,’” she explained. “I was like, he said my first and last name!” She was amazed and honored to be a hero to one of her heroes. While in Vegas, the humble, yet world-renowned Vero Beach native was invited back to Vegas to be a showcased
vendor for others to gain insight from The World of Concrete conference in 2021. “The table has been set for some relationships that could lead to some really prestigious opportunities that exist in this industry, in the world,” Ploszay said. Ploszay stays busy with work right here in Indian River County, though she hits the road about once a month at the moment. As she grows, so does her company, and so do her children, and so does her worldwide recognition. To schedule an appointment or see what Unicorn Epoxy can do in your home or business locally, call (772) 501-3324 or find them at www.unicornepoxy.com.

Five months after Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas, residents of Grand Bahama continue to live in catastrophic conditions. Abandoned, destroyed houses, flattened businesses and an absence of people does not even begin to describe the conditions found on the east side of the island.
Speaking with the locals, the situation is continuing to get worse each day, said Jordan Lulich. While the Bahamians are thankful of all the support they have received, primarily from the U.S., the problem they now face is that support is starting to dwindle.
On Feb. 20, 2020, local attorney Jordan Lulich, along with Matt Fulcher and Steven Lulich, set out on a mission to deliver relief supplies. Their journey across the island began when they landed at the port in Freeport.
As time passes people are less enthusiastic about the cause, said Lulich, and the relief supplies being shipped or flown there are decreasing each month. To make matters worse, the thought of the next hurricane season fills the residents with fear.
Driving a borrowed van full of relief items, they traveled 90 minutes to the east side of Grand Bahama. Along the way, they made numerous stops at locations that once were vibrant neighborhoods, but now looked like ghost towns.
About 60 percent of the island was under water after Dorian, so there’s still no running water in many areas. The Bahamians struggle just to shower, brush their teeth and do their dishes, said Lulich.
Simple supplies, such as water or water purifiers and canned food, are still needed. Caring for Catastrophes, a local nonprofit, is continuing to collect these supplies. To learn more about it, visit www.caringforcatastrophes. com, or contact Lulich at jordan@ lulich.com or 772-589-5500. The website has a list of supplies needed and locations where they can be dropped off. The Bahamians ultimately will need supplies to rebuild homes and businesses, but that can’t or won't be accomplished until the economy there starts to recover. It has been depleted, said Lulich. The island derives 80 percent of its income from tourists, yet tourism has reached an all-time low.
The island has not had to recover from a storm like this for generations, said Lulich.

Hibiscus Children’s Center Saving Children’s Lives for 35 Years April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. During this time, and all year round, we honor the innocent victims of child abuse and every day, work diligently to provide the critical life-changing services that vulnerable children need. This year, Hibiscus Children’s Center is celebrating 35 years of saving children’s lives. With the help of our generous community, we have never wavered from our mission which is to maintain a safe shelter for children who are abused, abandoned and neglected by providing prevention, early intervention, and advocacy in quality residential, assessment and recovery programs. Hibiscus accomplishes this by providing safe haven to children ages birth – 12 years at the Hibiscus Shelter in Jensen Beach and to teens ages 1317 years at the Hibiscus Village in Vero Beach. While in our care, the children receive professional mental health counseling, educational and medical services. The Career Pathways Program at the Hibiscus Village provides youth with career planning and educational services to help ensure they are prepared for a successful transition into adulthood. Over 80 youth
annually are provided services and the opportunity to intern on-site and in the community. *Megan arrived at the Village and quickly earned her GED while only 16 years old and now, she attends IRSC and works at a local restaurant. *Logan works very hard in school and as a result, is a straight A student. He has been accepted to a university in Florida and wants to major in Psychology/ Social Work. These are just two examples of youth who have participated in Career Pathways services and are succeeding! We are very proud of Megan and Logan for their hard work and will continue to ensure all our youth have the same opportunities to grow and prepare for a brighter future. If you would like to learn more about the Hibiscus Village and how you can get involved, please visit us at HibiscusChildrensCenter.org or call (772) 299-6011.
“Wine and Dine” event in support of the Hibiscus Children Center
Story and photos by Brenda Sposato A recent fundraiser held at Grand Harbor Club in Vero Beach raised significant funds for children who are abused, abandoned and neglected. Every year, more than 200 guests take a culinary journey at the “Wine and Dine” event in support of the Hibiscus Children Center. The evening featured elegant menu selections from appetizers to dessert, including exclusive recipes perfectly paired with wines, live music and silent auction items. This year’s theme “A Taste of Australia” was a huge success thanks to the dedicated Guild Members who donated of their time, talent and treasures. Hibiscus CEO and President Matt Markley was exceptionally thankful for the turnout and continued support of the community. He said, “Because of your generosity if a child is removed from their home, they will come to Hibiscus and they will have a home. Hibiscus never closes, thanks to you.” In his remarks, he recognized board members, committee members, key donors and thanked event co-chairs Carole Casey and Henriette Churney. The Hibiscus programs provide a better future for children and teens in the Treasure Coast. If you would like more information, please go to: HibiscusChildrensCenter.org.

Talk to the animals at LaPorte Farms By Steve Glaser I remember as a young child back in 1967, the song written for the film Doctor Dolittle, won the Academy Award for “Best Original Song” of the 40th Academy Awards. The song began ....“If I could talk to the animals...”. At Laporte Farms, Sebastian’s best kept secret, you can do just that! In 1994, Laura Laporte established Laporte Farms, as a unique petting farm, set on a meticulously maintained five acre estate, conveniently located just minutes from US1 and I95.
dancing, many photo opportunities, and the opportunity to mingle and make new friends. And the most special part of it all, Laura Laporte hosted the event for free.
Laporte Farms regularly hosts events for school children and their families, the elderly in assisted living, veterans and those with special needs.
The picturesque setting of the farm is ideal for engagement parties and weddings, birthday’s, fundraisers, holiday parties and company picnics. Also, it is very popular for photo shoots for all occasions.
On February 29th, they hosted a Special Needs Western Hoedown. It was truly a special event open to all ages. Guests enjoyed great food, music, steer roping,
Just a few weeks ago, Laura also hosted the “Ole Timer’s Picnic” and “Spring Fling,”. Saturday, April 11th, is one of my favorite events of the year. It’s “Easter on the Farm,” a great day of family fun! Just one week later is the Kid’s Fishing Tournament.

thinking about what she can do to make our community a better place. Sadly, in 1976, Laura lost both parents in a tragic car accident. In 1999, she was also in a serious car accident. Laura has since been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and almost five years ago, she lost the use of her arms and legs after a stroke. Laura refers to herself as “A cat with nine lives.” Laura went on to further tell me, “I have been blessed to have such a supporting community, meeting folks from near and far, watching my students grow up and now bring their babies to enjoy our critters. Our critters have brought smiles and lifetime memories to young and old. We welcome everyone regardless of their age, sex or ability.” Admission to the farm is complimentary, but donations are suggested and appreciated. Financial support and volunteers are

HOW PREDICTABLE ARE YOUR DAYS?
Story and photographs by Wyatt Hyora
When most of us get up in the morning, we have some idea what we’ll be doing that day.
This isn’t the case with the folks at the Indian River County Sheriff ’s Office. I had the opportunity to witness this first hand recently when I spent a day with a Sheriff ’s Deputy.
When I first arranged for my “ride along”, through Major Eric Flowers, I expected to get assigned to some particular activity the Sheriff ’s Office wanted highlighted; maybe school zone speeding or something. However, I was assigned to ride with a deputy on a routine shift on an average day. I thought that this might be pretty uneventful. I was wrong! I met up with Deputy David Rodriguez at the Sheriff ’s office and we headed out toward the general area he patrols. I soon discovered that he had been out in the field supporting an incident including SWAT officers, until 3:00 AM the previous night.
Field Sobariety Test
Deputy David Rodriguez
The day started quite normally: a follow-up on a recent vandalization, a routine traffic stop and just patrolling neighborhoods. It became quite obvious that deputies really need to know their communities and the folks that live there; what’s normal and what’s not. Deputy Rodriguez did. Things began to get more involved when Deputy Rodrigues stopped to assist another deputy who had pulled someone over suspected of driving under the influence (DUI). The two deputies conducted field sobriety tests on the individual. He didn’t do well. Additionally, a quick look through the window of his vehicle revealed an open alcohol beverage container.
Based on field results, this person was brought to the County Jail for blood tests and the vehicle, which had questionable ownership, was impounded. I later learned that test results showed a blood/alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit. Shortly thereafter, Deputy Rodriguez was dispatched to investigate the report of a car driven into a ditch in a residential area. A quick registration check identified the vehicle as one that was reported stolen earlier that day. About then, a local resident came up to say that two females had just left the car, run through one of the yards and jumped a fence. A drive around the block and some sharp observation work spotted two likely suspects. Then a quick sprint into the bushes by Deputy Rodrigues and the two were apprehended and returned to scene of the vehicle; still sitting in the ditch. The two suspects were read their “Miranda
Taken Into Custody
Rights” and questioned. They admitted to driving the car at the time it went off the road. However, they claimed that they didn’t steal the car but were allowed to use it. They couldn’t say by whom. The second car of the day was impounded. They were taken to be booked into the County Jail where I realized how lengthy the paperwork process is when someone is taken into custody and how important the accuracy is if it’s ever to be used in the courts. In this case, it took longer than the actually apprehension. Two young ladies - barely adults. They already had criminal records. One was still on probation from an earlier incident. A sad way to be starting their young lives. This day made me glad my days tend to be pretty predictable. And, glad that we’ve got people like the Indian River County Sheriff ’s Office serving our community.

Restaurant Review:
Local Favorite Gets Raves At a New Location By Susan Harris
What do you say when you go to a restaurant and they bat it out of the park? Vero Beach natives Brandy and Ellis Buckner now have two Crab Stops: Sebastian and the new location at 89 Royal Palm Point which seats 150.
And they will need every seat. First the staff is congenial and only too willing to help you put on a bib and give you a tutorial on the finer points of eating their crabs, crawfish, shrimp etc. Mary the manager loves her restaurant/job and her enthusiasm makes it all the more fun. That said I must admit I am not the person who loves the peeling, crunching etc. as you work to get to your

dinner. However, two of our party summered each year in Scandinavia and another is a Cajun connoisseur and they love it. Two huge steaming bowls arrived. The Snow Special Deluxe and the Crawfish Snack Pack featuring: King Crab legs, jumbo shrimp, delicious garlic potatoes, corn coblets and a lobster tail. We chose their medium original spice for the boil and my lobster tail and shrimp were excellent. Cooked just right. The crab legs and crawfish were perfect according to my companions. In fact, I have never heard so little conversation as at this dinner. The food was that good. Chicken Wings were delicious and juicy. The Clam Belly Strips alone are worth the trip. Tender, fried just right and tasting of the seashore. Corn Fritters were welcomed to sop up the garlic butter. Remember the old question "Where's the beef?" One of my friends said iron-

ically, it's at the Crab Stop. Their Hurt Me Burger was incredible. Perfect to balance the seafood and make your own surf and turf. Or if you prefer their tasty chicken breast sandwich. Somehow you have to make it to dessert - we did. Have you heard of Nazhi Thee Baker's gluten free organic cakes? They are served at both Crab Stops. Don't miss them they sell out. With names like Pina My Colada (it’s the #1 flavor), Coconut Goddess, Strawberry Cutie Pie and O-M-G Chocolate to name a few. Remember order enough dessert everyone claimed to be full but somehow dessert disappeared. A lone diner who sat across from us stopped at our table. A regular at the old Crab Stop it was his first visit to the new location and he loved the expanded menu. He had ordered scallops and he felt that the new Crab Shack was 100% better. Crab Stop can take care of your catering needs (land or sea) and special parties at their restaurants Another word of advice, try the Mrs. BB’s (Brandy Buckner) special dishes on the menu. Tell them City Guide sent you.

Legislative Update from U.S. Rep. Bill Posey As we come together to battle the coronavirus, I wanted to take a moment to update you on some actions we have taken in Congress to help address this critical challenge facing our nation. Recently, Congress passed with my support and the President signed into law the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act which provided $7.8 billion in emergency funding to combat the coronavirus. This is new, additional funding that supplements the funding already available to the CDC and other response agencies to research and develop vaccines and treatments for COVID-19, resources for state and local health departments, medical supplies, small business loans and foreign aid to assist Americans overseas. Furthermore we passed bipartisan legislation in the House to help diagnose COVID-19 cases through testing, funding to ensure that essential support services continue to operate through this crisis, and the creation of a temporary national paid sick leave program to provide relief to those out of work due to sickness, family need or temporary job loss due to COVID-19. It also included a
refundable payroll tax credit to enable employers to pay for employee sick leave and funding for nutrition and food programs for senior citizens and low-income families. Finally, earlier this year I introduced bipartisan legislation (H.R. 5982) to break our dependence on pharmaceuticals produced overseas. Eighty percent of the drugs that Americans depend upon come from overseas countries, and China, whose pharmaceuticals have been subject to numerous recalls, is the largest manufacturer. Our bill requires the federal government to examine where we are most vulnerable and make recommendations, so we are not dependent on foreign suppliers for essential medications. We are working hard to ensure that our families, businesses and communities have the resources to meet this head-on. And, like other emergencies, we'll continue to work together and get through this. If my office can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to reach out (772) 226-1701 in Indian River County and (321) 632-1776 in Brevard County. We’re here to serve you.
Congressman Posey and His Staff are Here to Serve You! If you have a problem with a federal government agency such as Social Security, Medicare, Veterans Affairs, etc., please feel free to contact my office.

“Re-Wild” Your Child: Imagine Outside!
By Susan Lovelace Are you a parent or childcare provider looking for an inexpensive, educational activity for your children during these uncertain times of school closings? Are you looking for an alternative to computer screen time for a learning experience? I recommend trying nature journaling with your students! We live in area graced with beautiful outdoor places and spaces to sit and journal, but even a backyard sit spot will suffice to inspire a sense of awe and wonder of our natural world. As an English teacher, I’ve been using nature journals in my classroom, in workshops, and while travelling with students of all ages for over fifteen years, and I’ve seen dramatic improvements in writing and critical thinking skills as well as some unexpected, healthful results. Since students may experiment with a myriad of formats such as prose paragraphs, making lists, sketching, photo journaling, or even writing poetry,
nature journaling challenges students to use their imaginations and invent creative approaches to the task. Nature journaling requires the “mindful” observation of plants, animals, birds, and insects, and students must pay close attention to all of the sensory aspects of the experience. Additionally, students frequently comment on how nature journaling serves to relieve stress and reduce anxiety. One teenager who regularly went to the beach to journal remarked, “This is so relaxing, I’m going to do nature journals for the rest of my life.” My website, www.imagineoutside.com, has guidelines and lessons designed for the English classroom to help your student get started with nature journaling. Because writing and literature are closely linked, I’ve included nature-themed excerpts from famous authors along with inspirational contemplations that serve as writing prompts. Now, go “imagine outside” with your children!

Truly Spectacular By Michele Peters
On the evening of February 29th, the Grand Harbor Country Club was a packed house with an oversold guest list of 152 attendees for the 2nd Annual Stars and Stripes Spectacular Gala. Military and civilian guests came together at this patriotic event to raise money for the Veterans Council and the many programs which serve the community’s veterans and their families. As guests arrived to cocktails and hors d’eouvres, they perused the silent auction items and took photos in front of a large Veterans Council ice sculpture. The event program began with the Sebastian Honor Guard presentation of the colors. Ms. Telly Antona led the crowd in our National Anthem and Father Dave Newhart gave the invocation.
Photos: Lee Orre
The guest speaker for the evening was Executive Director of the National US Navy Seal Museum in Fort Pierce, Master Chief Rick Kaiser, USN (ret.) SEAL. Kaiser shared stories from his vast career as a Navy Seal including details of his experiences from deployments which were featured in two award winning films; Black Hawk Down and Captain Phillips. Rick paid tribute to his first mentor Master Chief Rudy Boesch who had an extensive military career of 45 years and was a contestant on the TV show Survivor after his retirement. Ricks mentor and friend began his career training on the beaches of Fort Pierce, FL and passed away in November of 2019 at the age of 91. Rick will bring Rudy’s ashes back to Fort Pierce.

Would You Hire You? By Joe Pellegrino
Picture this... Jim was a friend. A lazy friend. One day Jim, who use to work for me, came by the office to pay a visit. Now I had let Jim go because he just didn’t produce, nor did he seem interested in producing. You see Jim was a nice guy, just lazy. (Did I point that out already?) On this particular visit we were talking about the state of my company and I mentioned how I really needed one more good salesperson. After a few seconds he said, "Why don't you hire me?" Once the shock of what he said wore off I decided to ask him one simple question, "Would you hire you?" Without hesitation he smiled and said, NO. The good news is he knew himself well, at least when it came to his work ethic. The bad news is that while he knew this truth, he did nothing to change it, preferring simply to remain in his status quo comfort zone. God built us for action AND purpose. If you are not living there you will never be able to experience the fullness of the creator!
Think about it‌ Do you live in a comfort zone? One that resists change? If so let me tell you there is a brave new world out there folks. One that initially might make us feel uncomfortable but will catapult us into action and ultimately positive change. After awhile the comfort zone can really become uncomfortable! So the question that needs to be answered is Would You Hire You? Joe Pellegrino is an author, speaker, pastor, John Maxwell Coach and the president of Legacy Minded Men. You can email him at joe@legacymindedmen.org.

VBFW 2020 TOP MODEL online contest.
We interviewed Elizabeth Casaponsa, the founder of Vero Beach Fashion Week, and this is what she had to say City Guide: Elisabeth, share with your audience about your professional career. Elisabeth: My passion is coaching women entrepreneurs around the world -in spanish-, to transform their dreams into their reality. I am from Barcelona and in 2015 I moved to Florida where I own Vero Beach Fashion Week, but it's not mine, it's from the people who is always helping, volunteers, sponsors, models, hosts, musicians, make up artists, hair stylists, friends,... I always tell them that our motto is: "You are Vero Beach Fashion Week". This 2020 is a fantastic year. I just published my first book for women entrepreneurs, "DreamsBoss" in Amazon in three different languages, book and ebook. City Guide: How coronavirus is affecting VBFW? A lot events are cancelled in Indian River County. Elisabeth: You are right, everything is cancelled!
Elisabeth: The news from my family in Barcelona are worse everyday. My friends just called me yesterday in my home in Nebraska, they were forced to cancel my book presentations for next week in Vero Beach. And coworkers from New York, Austin, are sharing the first economic impacts. City Guide: What's next? Elisabeth: Well, I am sure new and amazing projects will be born from this global situation! Awesome applications that didn't exist yet. Coronavirus is impacting Fashion Weeks all over the world. I knew I had the responsibility to avoid the word "cancel", and be proactive instead of reactive. Vero Beach Fashion Week this year is reinventing itself! We are doing VBFW 2020 TOP MODEL for the first time instead of the Fashion Show we did last year. It's taking place on Instagram and the sponsors and models are loving it. We are having a lot registrations! We will be available to help more models than a regular Fashion Show, and of course we are collaborating with our sponsors in a level that helps them to showcase their brands. How it works? It's easy: The Top Model with more Likes in her/his post on @VeroBeachFashionWeek Instagram account by June 1st wins!!! You can imagine how fun it is, the models can share, tag and comment on their own posts to promote them.

GYAC Dream Weavers Raised the Bar… and the Roof On a balmy night in February, donors to the Gifford Youth Achievement Center (GYAC) Dream Weavers campaign gathered at GYAC’s Cis and Bill Glavin Educational Center to be honored for their contributions to a multi-year capital campaign. The celebration was held on campus, under the dimmed lights of the Freddie Woolfork patio, and toasted all of those who made the dream a reality. The campaign took a village. Members of the Gifford Community, EDB Architects, Proctor Construction, Dream Weaver Honorary Chair Scott Alexander of Northern Trust; co-chairs Lisa Holmes, Mary McKinney and Trudie Rainone; and committee members, Adam Bolinger, Rosalen Cline, Bill Glavin, Barry Reardon, Norm Rickard, Todd Fennell, Tom Walsh and Joan Woodhouse, along with many others pooled their efforts to raise the roof of the new center.
The campaign began in 2018 with a goal of raising $7.4 million- $3 million for the construction of eight new classrooms, $400,000 to cover operational expenses for the first three years and $4 million to jumpstart an endowment fund. At its close, the organization raised $7.412 million, exceeding their goal. “The two-year campaign was an absolute success, first and foremost for the children who attend GYAC’s educational afterschool program and summer camps,” exclaimed GYAC Executive Director, Angelia Perry. The Cis and Bill Educational Center houses middle and high school students enrolled in GYAC’s Afterschool Program and elementary students remain in the Center’s original structure. The new facility makes it possible to accommodate
the 40-50 students who were waitlisted year after year, plus an additional 75 students. Looking forward, GYAC is focused on sourcing qualified teachers and securing an endowment for a sustainable future so that the Center is fully equipped to have a positive impact on the community for generations to come.
Commissioner Tim Zorc with School Board Chair Laura Zorc

About GYAC Gifford Youth Achievement Center, a 501(c)(3), opened its doors in 1998 with the sole purpose of enhancing the academic performance of children in Indian River County. The nonprofit organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors, focuses on vulnerable students who live in the Gifford community and surrounding municipalities of Indian River County. In addition to year-round educational programs and activities for youth, GYAC provides activities for adults and seniors citizens, such as exercise classes, bible study, and computer and educational training. The Center also hosts job fairs, health clinics, community gatherings and serves as an information hub for those in need of services.

VBWFF Charity Raises Awareness with Cinema Weekend! Every year during the month of June, Vero Beach, rolls out the red carpet to the national and international film world, by hosting the Vero Beach Wine + Film Festival. Recognized as a Top 20 Event in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society, the 5th annual festival presented by the Vero Beach Outlets opens Wednesday, June 10 – Sunday, June14, 2020.
In 2019, the Vero Beach Wine and Film Festival raised $10,000 for Suncoast Mental Health Center. The innovative arts nonprofit organization strives to bring awareness and funding to positive mental health in all 4 counties of the Treasure Coast.
This year’s hot docs showcase the transformative power of film and encourage courageous conversations in support of positive mental health, social equality and inspiring stories. Not to be missed, “Do No Harm” directed by Robyn Symon which explores why doctors are dying by suicide at an alarming rate and trapped in a toxic system that puts not only their lives at risk but the patients they serve. “Parkland Rising” documents the teen-led gun reform movement as it unfolds with a wealth of raw and illuminating content. We witness their grassroots efforts to get the gun lobby out of politics by turning out record numbers of youth
voters while facing gun-carrying counter protesters, an onslaught of online vitriol, and even death threats. Arrive early for the Vero Visions Awards + Screening, an evening of celebration and visual storytelling at the Riverside Theatre on Thursday, June 11, 2020 at 7:30pm. Generous festival partners underwrite the free public screenings. This is the rare opportunity to see the work of filmmakers whose films have screened in film festivals from Cannes to Los Angeles. Like director Xaque Gruber who will be screening his latest work, “THE.” And Sydney O’Haire whose award-winning film “Being Here”, follows the life of Charlie, a young woman in her late 20s, in her last three months at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility, which will have its Florida premiere.
VBWFF screenings allow you to see many films with the added bonus of question-and-answer sessions that follow many screenings put a personal face on the film-going experience. And yes, there’s wine at the films. For the true sip and swirl experience, make your way to the WOW! World of Wine Tasting Pavilion under the big top in Riverside Park. There are sample premium wines and savory bites from our festival wine and culinary partners. What to wear? Casual and comfortable should be your guide to choosing your fest going wardrobe. You’ll be walking, sitting and sipping with friends and filmmakers all weekend long by the beach. For of-the-moment fest chic, sport a VBWFF t-shirt. For additional information on upcoming events, films, and all things Vero Beach Wine + Film Festival, please visit VBWFF.com.
