The Quack is Back! Quack, quack! Guess who’s back?
It’s the Great Duck Derby!
Those 5,000 yellow ducks are eager to race. This COVID-19 virus sure has put a damper on things, but like water off a ducks back, the SPLASH IS STILL ON! The race is scheduled to be held on Sunday October 25, 2020 in person or virtually. The ducks are ready! Whether virtual or live, the Great Duck Derby will be making a big splash on October 25th at Captain Hiram’s We plan on launching 5,000 yellow rubber ducks and have them race their way towards shore. Yes, those little yellow ducks are lining up for what might have to be a virtual race, but no need to worry, your duck can still win that $1,000 First Place prize, $500 Second Place price or the $250 Third Place prize!
Treasure Coast Community Health won’t let the COVID-19 virus stop us from our mission! TCCH has been working very hard to provide food giveaways, COVID-19 testing drive thru sites as well as care for those affected during this difficult time. If the COVID-19 virus prevents us from holding an in-person event, we have plans of holding a virtual live stream event. So whether the race is virtually or live, those ducks will be racing to the finish line. You’ve got to be in the race to win, so don’t wait, the race will go on! Adopt your duck today. The Duck Derby Race is not really about the ducks. This is a fundraiser for TCCH. Funds raised will help so many of friends and neighbors right here in our community get the medical, dental and behavioral health care they need. It’s so simple, it’s only $5, and you can make a difference in someone’s life. Who knows, your duck just might win! Now more than ever we need your support in the Great Duck Derby. Please support TCCH and the work we do by adopting a duck, or better yet several ducks! All proceeds go towards helping the Indian River County Community stay healthy! Help the community, Wash your hands and Adopt a duck!

What Goes Around, Comes Around What keeps this world in a positive forward motion is the process of paying it forward, and Unicorn Epoxy owner and talented artisan Crystal Ploszay knows a thing or two about paying it forward. When Ploszay was only nine years old, her life’s work was set in motion through a summer camp hosted by Youth Guidance and the Cultural Council in Vero Beach. This is where her personal mentor found her; a man named Captain Vining Sherman. Ploszay said he chose her out of all the other students to mentor. “He awarded me $500 in art supplies and free art classes for 6 months,” Ploszay shared. Those art classes ended up going on until she was 21. Sherman, a retired Navy Captain, was a world-traveled artist who enjoyed mentorship and volunteering. “He taught me how to see,” she said. “And how to take what I see and filter it through the part of me that is self and putting out
there for the rest of the world to see what I see. There’s a certain amount of letting go to that. It’s like a freefall, almost.” The Vero Beach mother of two kids, Landon and Dahlia, raises them in a world where they are constantly being encouraged to engage their senses and boost their creative skills. She inhaled all that she was shown over the years and exhales it through mentorship to her own children, as well as to others in the community and even her clients. “I’ve been teaching classes to homeschoolers for over 10 years,” Ploszay said. She occasionally comes across a student that otherwise cannot afford art classes and interacts with them. In turn, giving the gift of art knowledge and know how, that she was so freely given as a child. Not only is she setting an excellent example as a mother to her children, but as a female business owner in the community, through empowerment and engagement with children and non-profits.
“These days I’m involved in a lot of giving back,” Ploszay said. She now sponsors the same summer camp that shifted her path years ago. Contact Youth Guidance to see how you too, can make a difference in the lives of more local children. She and her crew recently finished a paid project early, and decided to donate the extra time and equipment to doing the floor of a local non-profit, Indian River Clay, a non-profit teaching and membership studio. When one meets Ploszay, the pure empathy and creativity just pours out of her. “Really being heart-centered – there’s a dynamic there that other people can see and feel,” the
artist said. She feels as though her entire cycle of life and giving and succeeding has been filled with those types of people. And people who love to inspire or be inspired. “Art doesn’t just happen,” Ploszay said. “You have to seek it on purpose.” This school of thought has taken her across the nation, teaching technique classes and performing on site as a guest Artisan. As she prepares for a project in Alaska, she’s still thinking of us here at home- offering specials on exterior concrete work this month. Think of what she could do to your pool decks, entryways, driveways, garages and patios! To schedule an appointment or see what Unicorn Epoxy can do in your home or business locally, call (772) 501-3324 or find them at unicornepoxy.com.

Alzheimer & Parkinson Association expanding its Project Lifesaver Program Project Lifesaver is a program offered by the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of IRC.
It is designed to protect, and when necessary, quickly locate individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to the potentially life threatening behavior of wandering. With the dramatic increase in the number of individuals who may be at risk of wandering – because of conditions like Alzheimer’s or Autism -- this program strategically combines state of the art locating technologies, innovative search and rescue methods, and community partnerships that provide education to first responders about cognitive conditions. The Association is hoping to expand its Project Lifesaver program in the community by helping more families with autistic children. Currently, close to a dozen children and young adults wear the Project Lifesaver bracelet in Indian River County. A recent national study confirmed what parents with autistic children know all too well: wandering by children with autism is common, dangerous and puts tremendous stress on families. Using parent surveys, the researchers of this study found that nearly half of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) attempt to wander or
bolt from a safe, supervised place. Most of these children are never or rarely able to communicate their name, address, or phone number. Having a program like Project Lifesaver in place in their community can be tremendously helpful when families are considering options that will give them peace of mind and their children a better quality of life. With the support from the Treasure Coast Pilot Club and Indian River County Sheriff ’s Office, the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of IRC is able to purchase tracking devices and batteries. Individuals wear a bracelet that contains a radio transmitter which allows law enforcement to locate an audible signal that is a frequency unique to the individual bracelet. When a person wearing this bracelet is reported missing, law enforcement can track and locate them, usually within 30 minutes. The Indian River County Sheriff ’s Office Special Enforcement Unit supervises the tracking through a group of specially trained deputies. The bracelets are maintained and batteries changed monthly by staff at the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association. For more information about Project Lifesaver, please contact the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association at 772-563-0505.
Project Lifesaver has helped provide families in Indian River County peace of mind knowing that their loved one has protection and safety in case they wander. The program is designed to quickly locate individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to wandering. With the dramatic increase in the number of individuals who may be at risk of wandering – because of conditions like Alzheimer’s or Autism – this program strategically combines state of the art locating technologies, innovative search and rescue methods, and community partnerships that provide education to first responders about cognitive conditions. Many thanks to the Treasure Coast Pilot Club and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office for their support for Project Lifesaver. Providing hope and support to those facing intellectual and developmental challenges The Arc is more than a building or set of programs – The Arc is a belief. A belief that people with intellectual

The Arc promotes and protects the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community.
The Arc is the only organization in Indian River County with comprehensive programs that provide hope and support
every day to those in our community facing intellectual and developmental challenges. These efforts include advocacy, education and recreation programs, as well as residential, family and employment support.

According to research from Funding Circle, 52% of small businesses contribute to charity and 90% of those dollars go to support local charities. These same businesses also sponsor local events, sports teams, and other community gatherings. A study by Civic Economics found that for every $100 you spend with a local business:, $68 are spent in our communities. Only $43 stays in the local market when spending $100 with a national brand. Every day we see the negative impact on employment due to COVID-19. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses employ over 60 million people and half of the non governmental workforce. These business owners employ people in our communities, live in our communities, and support our communities. It is time for us to support them for all they have done and continue to do for us. Ways to Support Small Businesses Shop Now: If you are able to make a purchase now, contact your local business favorites and find out what options are available. Most businesses are finding ways to continue to operate within the new social distancing and safety precaution guidelines. Technology permits
businesses to engage with customers, collaborate and share pictures and information whether using SKYPE®, Zoom®, or other tools. Is it time to give your landscape a refresh, repaint your home's exterior, or power wash your roof? Talk to your favorite contractor, or request bids at: www.SEFlorida.App.BBB.org/Connect. Maybe you have been putting off a purchase or know what you want to buy for a birthday or holiday present. Local businesses can use the revenue now and you will avoid last minute buying down the road. Many restaurants and stores are also making gift certificates available. Two national websites have been set up to help small businesses promote their services: www.Kabbage.com/ HelpSmallBusiness and www.SupportLocal. USAToday.com. If your favorite business is not currently on the site, you may want to reach out and encourage them to consider it as another way to feature their great products, food, or services. Restaurants and bars/breweries have adapted to provide food and growlers for pick up and/ or delivery. Many restaurants offer delivery directly or through apps like GrubHub®, Delivery Dudes®, or UberEats®. If you want to continue to enjoy dinner out at your favorite restaurant after COVID-19 is no longer a health threat, then we need to continue to support our local hospitality sector by picking it up, having food delivered, or buying a gift certificate for future use
Creative Ways to Support Business: Under our current Emergency Orders, some businesses are unable to provide service to the public, but many are still hard at work for us. Letting other family and friends know how a business is continuing to operate in these trying times might be a lifeline to keep them afloat. A short plug on your social media pages with a recommendation might generate some much needed customers for the business. Support Local Employees: The local unemployment rate has increased dramatically over the last few weeks. While all industries have been hit hard, the hospitality sector, according to CNBC. has by far the largest number and percentage of workers now unemployed. Local groups are creating funding campaigns to help. Miami-Dade and Broward Counties have GoFundMeÂŽ campaigns set up for workers in the hospitality sectors:www. GoFundMe. com/F/MiamiRestaurantEmployeeReliefFund and www.GoFundMe.com/F/ Hands-ForÂŹHospitalityFTL
There are many other campaigns set up and operating throughout our area for people and groups negatively affected by COVID-19. Always review any giving options to make sure they are established for worthy causes and going to those designated in the giving request before you share your hard earned money. Supporting Our Front Line Heroes: Nurses, doctors, firemen, police officers, people working in our essential businesses, and those supporting their work behind the scenes are putting their lives on the line to keep our country and communities operating. Remember to share your gratitude with them every day and in meaningful ways. Contact government officials to ensure they have needed supplies and equipment, contribute to the charities supporting our local heroes, and send a thank you note or gift basket. A gift will show our appreciation and also help another local business!

Hibiscus Children’s Center Provides Trauma-Informed Care to Children During the month of June, National Safety Month was observed. Hibiscus Children’s Center honors the vision of our Founder LaVaughn Tilton, who believed that all children should grow up in a safe and loving home, free from abuse and neglect. Her dream and determination for a safer and kinder tomorrow for children catapulted Hibiscus Children’s Center into the forefront of child welfare services 35 years ago.
Since opening our doors, Hibiscus has been a safe haven for more than 3,000 abused, abandoned and neglected children. Our children have received over 375,000 safe nights where they have felt protected, loved and worthwhile. Today, over 200 children are provided life-changing services annually at the Tilton Family Children’s Shelter in Jensen Beach and Hibiscus Village in Vero Beach. In addition to ensuring the
children’s safety and well-being, critical services include medical and educational along with professional mental health counseling to help children heal from trauma. Child abuse comes in many forms, including physical, mental, emotional, sexual, neglect and/or abandonment. Hibiscus offers specialized therapy to treat victims of sexual abuse or youth that have been identified as targets of human trafficking. Clinicians who are certified in the Sexual Abuse Treatment Program receive specialized annual training and are certified through the Florida Department of Health. Statistics show about one in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. One of the key elements to help address the trauma experienced by abuse victims is through trauma-informed care. Hibiscus utilizes the Sanctuary Model, which is a trauma-informed organizational change model. The Sanctuary Model organizes both our treatment and the way we run our organization. Sanctuary is an inclusive model because it is a way of guiding leaders, staff, clients, and families to share the same language. Our organization is redefining what safety means – SAFETY is taking care of your body and yourself physically, psychologically, socially, and morally. Physical safety is being safe in your body and safe in the

world, psychological safety is being safe with yourself, social safety is being safe with other people, and moral safety is being safe with a guiding value system. Hibiscus implemented the Sanctuary Model, facilitated by Dr. Sandra L. Bloom and the Sanctuary Institute in 2017 and will receive our Sanctuary Certification later this year. We would love the opportunity to share more about our 35 years of service and keeping children safe. Your support is always needed to help us continue providing critical services to our children. Please visit us at HibiscusChildrensCenter.org or contact Michelle King, Chief Development Officer, at (cell) 561-452-5791.

FOR FOOD LOVERS – THE “GROW YOUR OWN SALAD” TOWER. By Jason P. Conklin We are all hard wired to love food. Refreshing, tasty, natural, satisfyingly good for us and our families. Fresh food plays to all our senses – the look, the taste, the smell and the feel – an enticing bundle of delight. But few of us, seeing the tomato, a bunch of herbs, or choosing a salad give much thought to the steps between the seed and the package on the supermarket shelves. And of course most of us do not have a back forty in which to graft, sweat and till and raise our own. And that is where the trouble starts. As populations grew so farmers, scientists, major agricultural combines and governments took over. They invested in fertilizers, insecticides and mechanization to meet the insatiable public demand as best they could. The demand was too great, something had to give and the main loss was taste as well as nutritional quality. Many of our children today have no idea of the potential taste of home grown food free from pesticides and fertilizers, chosen and cropped to perfection. Many of us now suffer from a loss of nutrition as the feast offered by individually grown herbs was destroyed by mass and forced cultivation. Most of us have never experienced the profound satisfaction of growing our own, or the educational thrill of successfully tending plants from seed to the plate. This can change and it can change now.
Argo Sciences, Inc. is an innovative consultancy applying the full range of established technology and research to producing products and services that work, improve our environment and the lives, health and education of our people. Now our Retail Team can bring the salad farm to your apartment, condo or homestead. No need for digging, no need for earth at all. No harmful chemicals, no pesticides. Instead grow your own herb and salad towers rich in flavor and nutrition. A focal point for the family cook, an educational inspiration for your children – fresh, cheap food for all. Jason Conklin is Founding Director of Argo Sciences and has a broad background encompassing environmental science. He can be reached at jason@argosciences.com

Veritas et Lux, or Truth and Light, is the motto that embodies Master’s Academy of Vero Beach. Whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, or in the community, Master’s Academy is focused on Christian principles and a solid biblical worldview. Students learn and grow in an environment that shapes them spiritually, challenges them academically, and prepares them to be the hands of feet of Jesus. Critical thinking, Christian self-government, and servant leadership are developed so that students learn to respond meaningfully to the challenges and opportunities that life will present. Master’s Academy was founded in 1998 and offers a Preschool through 12th grade education to students of families in Indian River and North St. Lucie Counties. The school is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) which espouses
professionalism, commitment to lifelong learning, and accountability as critical components to a quality, robust, and dynamic educational experience. Master’s Academy fosters relationships and is truly a family. Events help to build school spirit and camaraderie. One such event is the annual Big Shots Night in October. This family-friendly event is a perfect venue for contests, fun, and fellowship. A Golf Ball Drop from a helicopter caps off the evening’s activities and one lucky winner will take home a generous grand prize. For more information, visit our website at mastersvb.org. All proceeds benefit Master’s Academy’s tuition assistance program. Athletics, fine arts, and service learning are interwoven into a rigorous academic program where students thrive and grow into the people God has called them to be. Master’s Academy gives
each student a unique opportunity to create, discover, develop skills, and cultivate friendships that will last a lifetime. A full array of athletic opportunities are available to students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Homeschool students are welcome to participate in all of our athletic programs. Students not only develop their skills, but learn valuable life lessons because sportsmanship and teamwork are upheld. Hands-on learning is emphasized at all grade levels. Art, Drama, STEM, Technology, Life Skills, Music, Band, Graphic Design, and Industrial Arts are just some of the class offerings available to students. In addition to traditional learning tracks, Master’s Academy offers NILD Educational Therapy ® for students with specific learning differences.
Service learning provides students with many opportunities to help others. Master’s Academy partners with organizations in our community to increase impact and build a strong community. When Master’s Academy pivoted to online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, parents were amazed to see the dedication of teachers who continued to provide a rigorous education in the online environment so that students could continue to learn and thrive. Master’s Academy accepts Step Up for Students and financial assistance for first responders to help provide families with affordable Christian education. Please contact our Admissions Director at 772-794-4655 for more information or visit us at mastersvb.org.

Mental Health Association is Going Virtual! Amid all the changes brought to our community and the rest of the world, COVID-19 sent a shock-wave through the medical industry that forced everyone to adjust how we deliver necessary services to those in need. Namely, the MHA had to quickly find a way to scale-up web-based delivery methods in a small amount of time. There were some hiccups and growing pains, without a doubt but they did it. As fast as they could, they invested in as many web-cams as were still on the shelves and got their clinicians set up with doxy.me, a HIPAA compliant telehealth platform where clients and clinicians could talk face-to-face while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Next, Zoom was employed to hold committee and staff meetings
and to continue participation in community forums and group discussions. This became the norm for many businesses. In May, the MHA launched their first-ever virtual monthly support group facilitated by a clinician. MHA’s Mood & Anxiety Support Group offers attendees the chance to speak with others about dealing with Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety and/or Panic Attacks. As Chrissy Aspromonte, Clinical Manager, explains, “We opened this group to all adults who are strug-
gling with mood fluctuations during this trying time so they can relate to others who understand and learn skills and strategies to cope with these conditions.” The MHA plans to continue this group virtually every third Wednesday at noon through Zoom. In addition to telehealth and virtual groups, the MHA worked tirelessly through March, April & May to bring as much information to the masses as humanly possible. Dozens of helpful links were added to the resourses page on their website including information about COVID-19, where to find free online yoga and mindfulness classes, long form articles on reducing stress and finding balance, and Mental Health America Fact Sheets to name just a few. They spread the word far and wide through weekly e-blasts, press releases, throughout social media channels and recently sent out
their first quarterly newsletter. All-inall the spring season was a whirlwind of adjustments, jukes and jives but the MHA came out the other side better than ever! To stay up-to-date with the MHA and get mental health tips and tricks for your own well-being., sign up for e-blasts at mhairc.org and follow @ MHAIndianRIver on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. The MHA reminds you, It’s OKAY to Get Help!®
One Nonprofit Pays it Forward In late May, it was reported that a local nonprofit lost its delivery vehicle due to an accident in Fellsmere, FL. The accident’s only fatality was the vehicle itself and for Ted Pankiewicz Sr, founder of For the Love of Paws, a local nonprofit that provides adoption services, peace of mind and pet food to senior citizens and their furry companions when they can no longer care for their pets, that was his singular concern. This was something the CEO at the Mental Health Association in Indian River County, Dr. Nicholas Coppola could not ignore. As luck would have it, the MHA had an extra van at the Martin County Drop-In & Recovery Center.
Dr. Nicholas Coppola, Fawn Wittenrich and Ted Pankiewicz
Coppola approached Board Members with the idea of donating the van to For the Love of Paws, and it was decided that it was the right thing to do. “When I read about For the Love of Paws' loss, I knew we had to pay our blessings forward; it’s a win-win for all involved,” stated Dr. Coppola as he signed the title over to the new owners.
Ted Pankiewicz shared that the van will indeed enter its second act with flare. The funds Pankiewicz had been raising to purchase a replacement vehicle will now be used to insure, register and wrap the van with graphic treatment complete with a special thank you to the Mental Health Association in Indian River County. Pankiewicz concludes, “This is a wonderful example of one nonprofit helping another.”

For The Love of Paws Senior Pet Sanctuary Inc. Providing Peace of Mind To Senior Citizens With Pets By Steve Glaser
Jessica Pankiewicz, her husband Ted Jr. and sons, Hunter and Ryder, were always passionate about their love of animals. Sadly, Jessica passed away, a little over seven years ago, with a rare auto- immune disease, Devic's Disease. Ted Jr. and his boys struggled for months after, in a very dark place. One day, his father, Ted Sr., a retired K-9 officer from NJ, suggested that the family do something in Jessica's name. They all loved animals and For The Love of Paws was created. They decided to start a pet sanctuary in Fellsmere for unwanted animals. Many of these animals had been living with senior citizens who became disabled, sick or passed away. It is truly a blessing for seniors to know that their beloved pets would be taken care of. Today more than forty animals live in the Fellsmere sanctuary. For The Love of Paws also distributes over ten thousand pounds of pet food
monthly from their main pantry in Fellsmere. They are looking to expand into a larger facility. A few months ago, they opened For The Love of Paws Thrift Store, conveniently located at 931 12th Street in Vero Beach. Be sure to say, "Hello" to Cookie Pankiewicz, Ted Sr.'s wife, who works in the Thrift Shop. How can you help this great organization? They always need donations of cat food and volunteers are always appreciated. Financial contributions from the caring public are also needed and tax deductible. Donated merchandise for the Thrift Store is always welcome. For more information please call (772) 539-2417

Here Today, Gone to Maui
Want a taste of Hawaii with fire dancers, ukulele music, delicious food, exotic cocktails, and tropical desserts? Surprise, it's available right here in the
heart of downtown Vero Beach, across from the Post Office. And the Chef; Zak Schmitz is accredited by the Culinary Institute of America of Hyde Park, New York. He's also a local Vero Beach native who caught the wave to Hawaii, spending six years in Maui. His Vero Beach friend Dave Bedford joined him there for three years, and they returned to open Ono Luau.

We brought a party of six to the restaurant with the ages ranging from 24 to 60. Out of the group, I was the only one who traveled to Hawaii, spending time on different islands. Ono Luau's menu states authentic island cuisine with trending twists, healthy superfoods, and a local aloha. It's a restaurant that is family, vegan, and vegetarian friendly. We ate outside, and you did feel that easy-going island vibe. With the breeze and the fountain (even during the day), we were all comfortable. We started with pupus (appetizers) and cocktails. The Hawaiian Hummus, was perfectly smooth and featured roasted breadfruit. The two hummus addicts at
Elizabeth savors a tropical drink
our table were delighted, and what appealed to me was the fried ulu (breadfruit) that was used instead of crackers. Yummy! The Ahi Tuna Tacos were fresh and flaverful (the Ahi is shipped from Hawaii) and disappeared quickly. Dave has concocted some tropical flavors, which include a mango froth, which tops his Ono Luau Mai Tai, their #1 seller. Their IPA was a flowery, fruity brew which paired well with the tropical dishes.

Lamb is something I avoid, but don't miss the hoisin-glazed lamb chops. It was incredible, especially with coconut rice and ponzu veggies. The kalua pork and cabbage was classic. The local macadamia nut encrusted Mahi was a hit with everyone. The macaroni and cheese will leave you moaning or in the land of bliss. Though everyone groaned, we did feel that it was our duty to try the desserts. Coconut haupia pudding served in coconut was a hit, but I couldn't believe the apple breadfruit pie... Superb. The Kona coffee chocolate mousse with a macadamia nut peanut butter was my favorite, and I loved the sugar cookie tuile.
Ahi Tuna Tacos
They also serve Sunday brunch, cater, and rent out their beautiful patio for events very reasonably. Check Ono Luau's Facebook page or give them a call at (772) 999-2657 for the different Fire Dance seatings or the schedule when Uncle's Rudy and Roland strum their ukuleles and bring the real spirit of Aloha to Vero Beach.

New Focus on Education, same Focus on Art By Rosemary Polsky-Newman
The Vero Beach Art Club is coming back from its forced hiatus, stronger than ever and with a greater focus on Education. As you may know, the Club has always supported Art Education in the Community, by contributing scholarships and funds for art education to students, programs, and teachers. However, in recent years, actual art instruction has been left to other institutions. On March 6, just before the closure from the pandemic, the Club opened its Annex at 1791 Old Dixie Highway, in the Arts District, in an effort to change that, by taking a more active role in providing exposure to art and education in the Community. The plan was, and is, to have classes, workshops, member exhibits and gatherings at the Annex. Although our plans have been on hold since March, The Annex has re-opened, and will be hosting virtual classes over the summer, and likely beyond. Physical classes, originally planned to start in the spring, will start in September.
We also will be holding Monthly or Bi-monthly shows there, starting in July, followed by shows in September, October, November, and a large show in December that will encompass both Raw Space and a Holiday Boutique. Workshops will start in November. At this time, we are planning to run all our normal shows as well, although all activities are always subject to change due to effects of COVID, inclement weather or circumstances beyond our control. We invite everyone to visit our website www.verobeachartclub.org for all details about our shows, dates as well as hours of operation for our two locations. Our office inside the Vero Beach Museum of Arts will be open from July 1. We are looking forward to seeing you all for a great year of art sales, since there should be a lot of pent-up demand.

VERO BEACH FASHION WEEK 2020 TOP MODEL Online Contest Elisabeth Casaponsa, founder of Vero Beach Fashion Week, author and success coach, and Sheridel Sevilla founder of Beauty Couture School & Medspa presented for the first time VBFW TOP MODEL.
Oralia Serna is VBFW 2020 TOP MODEL winner. Oralia Serna was born in a small town in Mexico called Calvillo Aguascalientes. In the same town a discovered talent asked her if she was a model; that is when at 16 she started to model. After she got married at 18, she left her modeling career on the side to be a full-time mom, but life retakes her for a reason to model again now in the USA. Oralia has lived in Texas for more than 21 years and has four kids. What is your passion? My passion is numbers and physical activity. Accounting is what made me cold and calculating, adding, adding never subtracting. Exercise is what conserves me and gives me the energy I need, taking my heart to the limit, feel the wind on my skin when running, and it is my hobby; it is my passion.
then with my work and business from company accounting to my beauty products businesses, going from Beauty By Oralia, Beauty By Yaya, commercials, and promos on the Selfie Cam. What do you see in your future?
How is the day to day of VBFW 2020 TOP MODEL?
In the future, I see success and challenges, which I must overcome in life. You have to be prepared for success, and also for the opposite, obstacles that arise, they are part of life and personal growth in this adventure called life.
My day begins with my family, my house, fulfilling my duties as a mother,

Drive-by parade celebrates retirement of Vero Beach fire station’s lieutenant By Brenda Sposato
Coronavirus has not only changed our everyday lives but it has also affected a lot of the traditions we practice. Recently, a group of friends and co-workers of a local Lieutenant of Vero Beach Fire Station One, refused to let the pandemic change their farewell plans. For Lieutenant Carmen Murico, a drive-by parade was not exactly what he had in mind after 30 years of serving the public, but it was indeed the next best thing to a retirement party where no hugs and social distancing was the new normal. He and his colleagues stood at the station as they waved hello and thanked all who took the time to organize the special event.
On behalf of the Vero Beach Community, co-workers, family and friends – Congratulations on your retirement Lieutenant Carmen Murico!
Friends and families holding

Waving at the group of cars was Battalion Chief Jamie Coleman, who recalls going to high school with Muricio and getting hired around the same time. He said he was thankful for all those who were able to drive up and surprise Muricio with the parade while still keeping distances, “I’m so happy for him. He is a great guy. You never had to worry about him. He always went above and beyond.”
LT Carmen Murico

Muricio says it is time to figure out what he wants to do next with his life. “It’s kind of bittersweet for me. It’s been a pleasure working for the community and working with these great guys over the years. A lot of us grew up together. I know I'm going to miss the job and miss the guys on the post.”

Giving Back:
Feeding those who are most needing
Counter Culture Restaurant located at Boulevard Tennis Club serves our community with healthy meals and a loving heart. Chefs and restaurant owners,
Anthony and Lisa Damiano, have been cooking for IRC hungry families and First Responders for years but recently partnered with several local charities and foundations to up the ante during the recent health crisis. For the past 6 weeks, Counter Culture fed the First Responders at the Vero Beach Fire Station #2 with funds from the
Chef Lisa and Chef Anthony with Jennifer Whitte from the Covid Staff at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.
Sally Wilkey Foundation – a nonprofit organization that offers tennis lessons to children-in-need. During the height of the quarantine, there were no lessons being given at Boulevard Tennis Club, so the SWF asked Chef Anthony to make the fire station lunch and dinner every Tuesday to show appreciation for all of the selfless service we all take for granted every day. With the support of Planet Pet, Counter Culture also served lunch to the Covid Staff at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital. Through the Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation, Counter Culture has been providing dinner for 16 of the county’s hardest hit families two times per week for the past 8 weeks. Chef happily makes 128 meals every week and the MFCF delivers them to the families. This is an ongoing service and the goal is to continue this through at least the month of June. Back in May, Counter Culture partnered with Sunrise Rotary of Vero Beach and Growing Healthy Kids, Inc. to give a cooking lesson to local children using the freshest most nutritious ingredients available. It was a great success. The kids learned how to buy fresh vegetables at the local farmer’s market and Chef Anthony delighted in teaching them to put their purchases together to make a delicious healthy meal.

Specializing in the Treasure Coast Lifestyle
2020 has challenges and opportunities to make an impact 2020 has been a year of the unexpected. A few short months ago, life as we know it was turned upside-down with the onset of COVID-19. In this time of uncertainty, loss, and pain for many, our mission has remained the same in helping meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of men and women in Vero Beach and beyond. We are committed to serving clients of all cultures, races, ages, and even languages. We continue to be touched and inspired by the strength of our clients and volunteers in this time, and their ability to take the trials they are facing and transform them into moments of bravery and strength. As an essential service, we are thankful to have been able to remain open and serve our precious clients. We have adopted the sanitation procedures and social distancing guidelines recommended by the CDC and have added to our areas of service in order to protect our clients and keep our doors open full time. We have been offering virtual visits to further support clients and have been able to continue offering Earn While
You Learn appointments via technology and provide pick-up services for material support. Presently, we are happy to be serving our clients face to face again-if they choose to do so. While 2020 has brought unanticipated challenges, there have also been exciting areas of growth. By the beginning of this year, we had outgrown our backroom Baby Boutique at our original building. We were able to expand and now have a brand new, larger Baby Boutique across the street. Little did we know a few months ago the impact that this new space would have for moms and dads in our community during this pandemic. Diapers, formula, wipes, and other necessities have been harder to find and afford in these months as supplies are limited, and many families have lost income. Other families have not been able to leave home due to safety concerns and being considered “high risk. At Care Net, we have been working hard to ensure that having the basic supplies you need to care for your child is not a stressor in an already difficult time.

Enrichment Center opening in Sebastian with expanded programs & services As H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue celebrates our 14th anniversary, we are happily starting to experience some growing pains. As our programs and services expand and rescue pulls become more frequent, we realized that in order to continue our amazing growth, we would need to expand our facilities. After countless hours of strategic planning and design, a vision of the Enrichment Center was born. The Enrichment Center will open next door to the main shelter located in Sebastian, FL. It is a specifically designed, multi-purpose facility where the rescues in our Shy Dog and Fresh Start Programs will receive the care they need. These animals have survived abuse and neglect and are often fearful, shy, under-socialized and behaviorally challenged. To give them their second chance at life, they require rehabilitative programs to build love and trust so that they can become well-adjusted family pets. The new facility will also provide essential programs for our community aimed
to assist residents with responsible pet ownership as well as rewarding volunteer opportunities for those looking to make a difference in our community. It will also allow us to host fun events to bring pet lovers together, like kitten yoga! In addition to community programs and volunteer opportunities, the Enrichment Center will serve as a hurricane bunker for the animals in our care in the event we experience a severe storm and will provide the space we desperately need for staging emergency and disaster relief pulls. On June 12th, H.A.L.O. welcomed 51 potcakes and 17 potcats from the Humane Society of Grand Bahama and we realized how desperately we need the space the Enrichment Center will provide for our rescue pulls. We look forward to the next chapter in H.A.L.O.’s future that will allow us to create a world with no more homeless pets!

Women’s Care Center Remained OPEN! Women’s Care Center of IRC, Inc. remained OPEN with regular hours, just made major adjustments to “how” their clients were served. An unplanned pregnancy can feel like a crisis, and now more than ever, our clients need our support. Administrator Holli Skrapits was like an air traffic controller, in the Center daily, fielding calls and forwarding them to counselors at their homes who would then “phone counsel” each one, offering the loving support Women’s Care Center is known for in this county. Our dedicated staff has been serving clients every single day. Ultra-sonographers in protective gear showing our most vulnerable clients their growing babies and Peggy MacLellan has managed Group Classes via ZOOM with much success and adapted content to help with the stress our clients are feeling in this pandemic time. Diapers, wipes and baby formula are being delivered via the parking lot to any client in need. Babies have been born – preemie twin boys – the latest, and their parents could not shop for preemie diapers or clothes that fit, so we gathered the items to help them through this tough time. Women’s Care Center is always there to help with the needs of their families. If there is a baby in need, our goal is to provide for that need. In the last 365 days, 885 women have been served with 1,029 ultrasounds and 3,752 visits! That’s an average of 15 women every day. With each passing year, our Board of Directors and staff are always striving to serve more families and babies in need. We thank all our generous donors who support this incredible mission and join with us to give HOPE to our beloved community. Women’s Care Center is “ESSENTIAL” and important during these pandemic times and every other day! For more information please call (772) 2575390 or go to www.womenscarecenter.org

The 5th Annual Vero Beach Wine + Film Festival presented by the Vero Beach Outlets announces a Virtual + Live offering this year! And it’s the first film festival to do so on the film festival circuit. The historic event will take place over 4 weekends from August 13 – September 6, 2020. Named a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society, fest goers can stay in or go out to see the largest screening of independent film on the Treasure Coast this summer. Mindful of the times, the VBWFF Team has put together 50+ screening for audiences of 50 throughout the four weekends. The “50 for 50” live event screenings will take place at the Majestic Theatre, Emerson Center and Executive Courthouse. More than 100 independent films, including Academy-Award winners, Sundance hits and world premieres will be on view. Plus, special event “dinner and a movie” screenings will be featured this year at Sandridge Golf Club and Sky Dive Sebastian.
Historic Hybrid August 2020
Opening the festival on Thursday, August 13, the Vero Visions Awards + Screening take place at the Treasure Coast Park & Watch Drive In. Generous festival partners underwrite the free public screening. The Vero Beach Wine + Film Festival is a 501 C (3) organization promoting the transformative power of film and encouraging courageous conversations in support of positive mental health, social equality and inspiring stories. One such story, “Roger B. Chaffee-Aviator Ad Astra” directed by Daniel Joel Deal chronicles the life of the Apollo 1 astronaut you've never met. On the eve of his ascendancy to space, a tragic fire takes his life and the lives of Gus Grissom and Ed White. Special Guest Sheryl Chaffee, daughter of the acclaimed astronaut, will join us after the screening. Possibly the most popular screenings at the Vero Beach Wine + Film Festival are the short film programs. A great feature film tells the story in 2 hours. Now imagine bringing an audience to tears or laugh out loud laughter in only 5 minutes. This is
the genius of the short film genre. Arrive early to see the selection of comedy, dramatic and documentary stories. In August, the innovative arts nonprofit organization rolls out the red carpet for aspiring filmmakers. This year introducing an inaugural program, VBWFF FILM LAB. “Money, Music + Marketing for Film MAKERS, a series of panels where industry professionals and experienced filmmakers will share lessons learned. Sip, swirl and savor 100+ fine wines from around the globe at the WOW! Wine Club. Each Saturday, a day long immersive wine experience will be presented at Vero COLAB. Deepen your knowledge of the winemaking arts and meet the tastemakers behind the vines. Exclusive price discounts on wines available for virtual and live attendees. Many film screenings at VBWFF have gone on to significant success and distribution. We welcome you to a warm and wonderful film festival by the sea which embraces the wide lens of independent filmmaking. Tempt, taste and toast your senses at this not-to-be missed cinematic celebration! For more information and pass purchases, please visit vbwff.com.

Local restaurant gives back during COVID-19 Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Vero Beach is giving back to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant stepped up to the occasion to help the Women’s Refuge raise much needed funds. Carrabba’s recently hosted a family dinner night fundraiser to benefit the agency’s programs. The event sold nearly 300 takeout dinners. It was a huge success! Catering Manager Sheryl Case said she was very happy with the turnout and that they were able to give back in some way. She explained, “We believe in the Women’s Refuge mission. During a time like this it is necessary to help each other. No one has a book on how to go through this pandemic. We want to do what we can to give back to our neighbors who have supported us for so long.”
Carrabbas Italian Grill Catering Manager Sheryl Case, Proprietor Tony Brown, and Kitchen Manager Dominick Mastropolo
On behalf of the Women’s Refuge board, staff and people they serve — an enormous thank you goes out to Carrabba’s and our community for the generous support! To learn how you too can make a difference, visit womensrefugevb.org.
