Fall 2019

Dear Readers, Thank you for picking up the City Guide of Sebastian & Vero Beach. We hope you find it interesting, and that you choose to support our local non-profits and also the businesses that advertise within. Doing so will help to make Indian River County more socially and economically healthy. Enjoy our content and back issues at www.cityguidesvb.com and visit us on our Facebook pages as well! You may notice that many of our articles bring attention to local not-for-profit organizations in our community. I am grateful that so many of us can share our blessings with these very worthy causes.

Our community continues to prosper, and there are so many opportunities to get involved with local organizations that support the arts and help the less fortunate. We are also blessed to be able to maintain our unique small-town charm amidst our growth. If you are interested in advertising, please know that we print 15,000 copies that are delivered via USPS to thousands of local residents and businesses, and are also available at over 350 locations countywide. The Quack is Back! It’s happening again. On October 20, 2019, Captain Hiram’s and the Indian River Lagoon will be a sea of yellow, yellow rubber ducks that is!

So do you have a duck in the race? Duck adoptions are only $5 a duck, but better yet, you can adopt a Quack Pack (that’s six ducks for the price of five) for $25! Adding to the excitement of gathering with your closest friends for a worthy cause, TCCH is going to make a few lucky duck owners very happy. Did I mention the $1,000 cash prize for first place? Every one of your adopted ducks is also a chance for you to win.

Thousands of little, yellow rubber ducks will be racing to shore and bringing hope to an entire county. Treasure Coast Community Health (TCCH) is hosting it’s signature event, the Seventh Annual Great Duck Derby. Thousands of spectators watch over 5,000 yellow rubber ducks splash into the IR lagoon and feverously race towards the finish line. TCCH depends on these ducks because they represent a community-wide effort to make healthcare affordable for everyone. You see, every one of these ducks means money going to support your neighbor who struggle to pay for doctor visits, including children, mothers and uncles. All proceeds benefit more than 19,000 patients served by TCCH annually.

Second and third place prizes are $500 and $250 respectively. But rest assured, you’ll have your chance to go home with a little something extra, that awesome feeling you get from helping improve the quality of life in your community. The Duck Derby kicks off at 12 noon. Ducks hit the water around 2 pm! A family fun day has been planned with kids activities, great music and special appearances by Quackers, the Great Duck Derby mascot. Join the flock! You can adopt a duck at any TCCH facility or on-line at TheGreatDuckDerby.com

“Hold on...How is THAT Concrete?!” ...is the most frequent question/exclamation I get about my work. Most people can’t believe their eyes and have to touch it,” says Crystal Ploszay- Owner and Lead Artisan at Unicorn Epoxy.

How long does a typical project take your team to install?

‘I like to explain my work as not just concrete, but a way to express your personality, to convey a feeling. How do you want to feel when you walk into your space? With our Artisan’s techniques, experience and skill, we can create your ideal space...without all the shopping that typically goes into finding your perfect surface.’

I usually schedule five days for each project, but it depends on the unique installation. We work faster than most people expect. I attribute much of that to our Mobile Studio that we have on site at every project. We’ve set ourselves up for success by having everything super organized and systematized. I’ve invested in the best machinery in the industry so we can provide top notch service to our clients at the height of the industry standard.

Surface? What do you meanconcrete isn’t just for floors?

Industry Standard...What does that mean?

Sure, our team does a fair amount of flooring installations (imagine concrete floors that look like wood inside- or outside on your pool deck...or a designer epoxy garage floor that looks like marble) But we also fabricate and install countertops, accent walls, outdoor furniture and fire tables. I love doing stuff like that- concrete is a liquid, essentially, and thinking of it like that enables us to get endlessly creative with our designs.

Well...Knowing the industry and how to do proper installations with a proper safety standard is what makes us different from other companies- painters who want to do your garage floor, or people who ‘invented’ a new way to do it. I’ve worked with over 400 different materials and know the spec sheets back and forth on every one. That’s why people call me from all over the world for advice on their projects. The science behind

why these materials act the way they do is what enables me to create almost anything out of them. Understanding the physics of what the materials are doing and why is just as important as technique.

Speaking of technique, you’ve got a few up your sleeve, haven’t you? Haha, yes. I’ve actually been a guest artist on several different installations all over the nation. I’m gaining a bit of a reputation within the industry worldwide and have been doing a lot of traveling to teach classes and inspire other concrete artisans to incorporate some of these techniques to their companies. Some of these techniques include installing concrete and hand texturing and staining it to appear to be wood, or bricks or limestone. In Oklahoma, I taught counter-top techniques, and just got back from a project in Illinois that featured my Boardwalk collection and Concrete Aquatic Scenes (Which is coming soon to Mrs. Macs in Key Largo- omg that one will be fun!)

But you’re from right here in Vero Beach, right? That’s right! I’ve been here my whole life, and love it. While we travel frequently, most of our installations are here in this area. I’ve got two children and like to be close to themgosh it goes too fast!

You’ve done a lot around here then? Yes, you can see my installations at Waldos, the Driftwood, McKee Gardens, DiMare, Treasure Coast Corals, Sebastian Smiles just to name a few. Most of the coolest stuff is private residential though. You can see some of that if you look on our website, or Facebook Unicorn Epoxy.

How do we find you and learn more? You can give me a ring anytime to brainstorm a project at 772.501.3324 or come visit me anytime at my Studio, which is open to the public at the Vero Airport Trade Center, 2501 27th Ave (unit F9) to check out what we are working on now and see some examples of my work. We are always doing something fun!

The Art of Florida’s Highwaymen Who are the Highwaymen? In the late 1950s, during the Jim Crow era of the south, a small group of African American artists from the Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach area started a business venture during a time where employment opportunities available were most likely low paying, minimum wage jobs. Eventually the group numbered twenty six self-taught artists. Unable to display and sell their work through traditional channels such as galleries and art agents, they traveled the roads selling their paintings to business owners, real estate brokers, lawyer’s offices, banks, and others along the way. This

unconventional sales method earned them the name of “The Highwaymen” sometime in the mid 1990s.For over 40 years the group captured Florida’s natural beauty in an estimated 200,000 paintings, depicting striking views of back woods scenes, breaking waves, palm lined beaches, and rivers, to name a few.The Highwaymen have been featured in the N.Y. Times, on National Public Radio, and were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. Their work is on display in the White House and Florida Governor’s mansion, in addition to countless homes and offices across the country. Also part of the Smithsonian’s permanent collection in Washington, DC

The 2019 Vero Vino Wine & Food Festival will again transform the Heritage Center into the ambiance of art deco meets historic quaintness. Last year, Vero Vino dazzled its guests with a cavalcade of tidings, and their wine left an enduring impression on everyone. Vero Beach City Clerk and co-chair Tammi Bursick explains, “Two of our team members have ownership background in vineyards and wine stores, so our decisions are supported by intimate, professional experience. This year we are partnering with Southern Social of Vero Beach to continue our excellence in international and domestic wines as well as craft beers that are uncompromisingly selected for their excellence.” Wild Thyme Catering’s mesmerizing lamb chops and goat cheese stuffed dates will headline a magical list of hors d’oeuvres from Chef Travis Beckett. Chef Lori of Sweet Creations will deliver a delicious bakery display featuring her famous dark chocolate infused lollipops, and the Indian River Charter Jazz ensemble will return for a second year to provide their unique style of upbeat entertainment; the 2017 performance had couples clearing space for dancing throughout the evening.

The Vero Vino Wine & Food Festival will be held Saturday, November 23rd from 4-6pm at the Vero Beach Heritage Center. Tickets are only $50 and includes everything. The Festival is sponsored in part by Dr. Debra Brown, Mr. Norman Wells, Vatland Auto Group, Dale Sorenson Real Estate, VeroBeach.com, and Florida Shutters. Unity Center of Vero Beach is host to the event. Visit verovinofestival.com for ticket information.

Festival guests fill the Vero Beach Heritage Center

What’s most exciting is that this is a fund-raising event. Vero Vino’s primary benefactor is the Education Foundation of Indian River County whose Regional Science & Engineering Fair has been the catalyst for developing critical thinking skills in students since 1992 and their additional programs that improve math skills, reading comprehension even robotics and aeroponic gardening influences students from K-12th grade. The festival will also continue to produce its “Have Piano will Duel” summer concert series which promotes young musicians interested in jazz.

Standing Up Against Breast Cancer “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”

The wise words of American author and activist Coretta Scott King are brought to life when the residents and families of Indian River County come together for one great cause. Although an unfortunate diagnosis of the disease has never been an occasion to look forward to, there is one thing that is evident throughout the many years of support, research, and fundraising in benefit of the battle against breast

Kyle Sanders, President of SRMC, and Theresa Woodson, Senior Market MManager, Treasure Coast, American Cancer Society

cancer: the inordinate passion for community. The power of community and stewardship are values that hold within the very core of Sebastian River Medical Center’s mission. Therefore, the hospital is excited to continue the annual community tradition and has partnered with The American Cancer Society (ACS) as a Platinum Level sponsor for the 2019 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Indian River. Fundraisers for the cause have historically been held at Sebastian River Medical Center, and have included bake sales, basket raffles, and t-shirt sales, among a myriad of other activities that not only raise awareness, but build team rapport and fellowship among hospital staff, patients, and family members. This year, however, Sebastian River Medical Center boasts an addition to the cause. As a reflection of the impact that breast cancer once had on him and his family through his grandmother’s diagnosis and struggle with breast cancer, Kyle Sanders, President of SRMC, has committed to raising a minimum of $2,500 as a part of the ACS’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign. As a part of the fundraising efforts, Sebastian River Medical Center will be boasting a flock of pink yard

flamingos at the base of its monument sign on US Highway 1 throughout the month of October. The flamingos represent the stance against breast cancer and can be signed in memoriam or survivorship of those affected by the disease. Due to the desire to instill the power of community among Indian River County residents and visitors, flamingos will be available for purchase inside Sebastian River Medical Center, or online as evidence of a donation (minimum of $10) to Kyle’s Real Men Wear Pink Page, which can be found by visiting www. RealMenWearPinkACS.org, and then clicking “Find a Candidate” at the top right of the page. Taking place on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Riverside Park in Vero Beach, the Sebastian River Medical

Center (SRMC) team looks forward to Standing Up Against Breast Cancer in a fruitful and fun Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Indian River event, and to contributing to the impact of this passion for community.

American Icon Brewery is a restaurant company with locations in Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Brewery was established in 2016 and quickly was voted 2018 Best Brewery on the Treasure Coast and won two prestigious beer awards including Best Beer in Florida for Brewmaster, Jesse Robles’ FLORIDA HEAT and FACTORY PILSNER. The Brewery was built in 1926 and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It is formerly the Vero Beach Diesel Power Plant, and an inoperative 1937 750-kilowatt BuschSulzer generator is the centerpiece of owner Michael Rechter’s new design. In the aftermath of the destruction in the Bahamas caused by Hurricane Dorian, American Icon Brewery has been at the forefront of the “Drive for Supplies” mission to assist the rebuilding and clean-up of our island neighbor. Both American Icon Brewery locations (Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale) are an official drop off sites for Bahamas

relief supplies. American Icon Brewery has teamed up with Bethenny Frankel’s Bstrong charity (#bstrong) to have the supplies shipped to the islands. In the first few days of collecting supplies, the breweries have accepted over $5,000 in goods that include bottled water, batteries, cleaning supplies, first aid equipment. In addition to collecting and shipping the supplies to the Bahamas, American Icon Brewery is donating 10% of each donors’ restaurant purchases to Bahamas Relief Funds. Citizens donating to the cause will notice American Icon Brewery has recently released a new food menu. The menu includes 15 new items with incredible recipes by Executive Chef Alcadio Roach that include the infusion of our fantastic craft beer into all the sauces. Some new items include baby back ribs, roasted chicken and mahimahi that perfectly complement our already famous Icon Burger selections and hand made pizzas.

OUR STORY AMERICAN ICON BREWERY was inspired by and brought to life by its home, the nearly 100-year-old Historic Diesel Plant — an iconic American building. As the flagship of Vero Beach’s downtown arts district, AIB’s mission is to serve fresh, quality craft beer and homemade food in a relaxed atmosphere that everyone can enjoy. Restaurant Review:

Food From the Heart By Susan Harris

A new restaurant has opened on the Vero Beach dining scene: Miss Saigon located at 737 22nd St. (Behind Maryland Fried Chicken on Miracle Mile). The food is south Vietnamese home cooking taught to Mylinh Nguyen by her Mother, and it’s incredible. It’s fresh food from the heart that is good for your soul. In fact, Mylinh will tell you about the dish that best suits your mood or health. Every recipe has a meaning. The ginger, chili, lemongrass, and garlic are all freshly prepared

lovingly prepared by Mylinh. And like most artist’s studios, the hours at the restaurant are subject to change. So call ahead or check google. The menu isn’t large, but the dishes that we had were incredible. It seems to be a trend in Vero Beach: a smaller, intense intimate menu. We started with Pho Filet Mignon. The broth (with 30 pounds of the beef shank) is lovingly simmered for 30 hours, and it was the best bowl of Pho that I have had. In fact their bowl of Pho is a meal in itself.

The beautiful contemporary interior has a big exotic bar that features delicious drinks and wine. It’s the quintessential secret place that a friend introduces you to. It has fantastic food with fresh from the garden herbs and vegetables that are

We then moved on to our entrees. I had heard that the Chicken Fried Rice is out of this world and we weren’t disappointed. Nice big pieces of chicken and lots of egg. It was moist and flavorful and just what you need after a busy day. Our resident

“hot and spicy fan” chose the Spicy Beef Noodle and though we all share (some of us thought it hot and out of our comfort zone) he said it was a perfect intensity. But this is a man who is a fan of ghost peppers! So those who like it hot will love this dish. The Filet Mignon Shaking Beef was a winner across the board. The sauce and the tenderness of the beef, as well as the presentation with Vietnamese traditional ceramics that hold the rice, make you feel that you are eating abroad. The homey touches that Mylinh insists upon so that you feel the hospitality and tradition of South Vietnam cuisine. After asking about the Shrimp Stir-Fried Noodle and hearing that it is the Vietnamese version of Pad Thai - we were in. I found it to be refreshing and not as sweet as Pad Thai. The noodles are bigger. Another winner that I would order again. Somehow we found room for dessert: a dish of tenpura fried ice cream that we all shared. Don’t miss it.

Mylinh’s husband Dat is a bare-knuckle champion fighter who owns the martial arts studio across the parking lot. He will be fighting in front of 5,000 people at the Hard Rock Arena Tampa on October 19th. Mylinh wants her family to be healthy, and that’s what her menu promotes. Good tasty cooking with no shortcuts.

Vero Beach Centennial Celebration Finale Schedule of Events on the 100th anniversary day, Saturday, October 26, 2019, It is no coincidence that Downtown Vero Beach is the site for the Centennial Celebration Finale. In the decades since the town of Vero Beach was incorporated in 1919, Downtown has been the place where everything happened….from teas to dances, to picnics, baseball games, shopping, music, movies, and government. On this 100th anniversary day, Saturday, October 26, 2019, let us revisit those memories that have endured for a century, bringing the community together in this place of history, the heartbeat of the community... Historic Downtown Vero Beach. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics; mingle with old friends and make new ones. Enjoy this glorious fall day, one community, making new memories together….while listening to music and enjoying the parade, informational booths, historical displays at the old train station, art sweepstakes, food trucks, friends and family while mingling in and around Pocahontas Park. The beer garden will be open … buy your Centennial commemorative tokens...plus many of the local downtown merchants will be open to sharing the special day with the community.

FOR SALE:

Exceptionally Rare Find… Magnum 1961 Château Latour 100 points John Gilman

“I have been fortunate to drink the 1961 Latour on a handful of occasions over the years, and this has always been my favorite wine from the Left Bank in this glorious vintage…a brilliant wine that is at its absolute zenith of maturity today, soaring from the glass in a complex constellation of cassis, sweet dark berries, cigar ash, dark, gravelly soil tones, a hint of black truffle and a classic topnote of walnut. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and almost sappy at the core, with great soil signature, suave, moderate tannins and stunning focus and grip on the very, very long, very complex and vibrant finish. The balance here is simply impeccable, and though this wine is at its apogee, I can envision it cruising along out of the reach of time flown by for another century! Perfection. Drink between 2013-2100.” (9/2017)

100 points James Suckling

“As stunning and immortal as ever. Complex aromas of mint, plum, currants and dried dark fruits that turn to raisins and chocolate. Full and juicy with a finish that lasts for minutes. Perfect wine as always.” (3/2012)

100 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate “Port-like, with an unctuous texture, and a dark garnet color with considerable amber at the edge, the 1961 Latour possesses a viscosity and thickness. The 1961 has been fully mature for over 15 years, but it seems to get richer, holding onto its succulence and fat, and developing more aromatic nuances without losing any sweetness or concentration. An extraordinary wine, it is unquestionably one of the Bordeaux legends of the century! Anticipated maturity: now-2025 (RP)” (6/2000)

100 points Vinous

“The 1961 Latour poured at the vertical in Hong Kong is unquestionable one of the finest bottles that I have tasted. It has a breathtaking bouquet: fresh as morning dew and brilliantly delineated, intense black fruit whereby every atom is suffused with mineralité. It feels so youthful and vital. The nose is the apotheosis of Bordeaux being so aromatically regal and aristocratic. The palate is medium-bodied, with tannins sculpted by the finest chisel in the set: tightly wound black fruit, a perfect line of acidity and a breathtaking delineation, utterly harmonious and blessed with a persistent graphite-tinged finish that lasts over a minute. Majestic. Tasted at the Latour dinner in Hong Kong. (NM)” (7/2018)

100 points Wine Spectator

“A blockbuster. Amazingly youthful, yet complex and complete on the palate. Aromas of mint, berries, currant and minerals follow through to a thick and caressing, full-bodied palate. Superlong and superripe. Got to love this. Will it age forever? (JS)” (8/2000)

Capt. Hiram’s Resort Presents the 7th Annual River Challenge Triathlon By Zoe McNeely

Help save the seagrass this November during the 7th Annual Capt. Hiram’s Resort River Challenge Triathlon! Capt. Hiram’s Resort has been located on the Indian River for over thirty years. Those who work and live here in Sebastian, FL can agree that they have watched the beauty of the Indian River fade in those thirty years. The waterfront and its surroundings are a prime feature in the River Challenge Triathlon. This event is dedicated to raising money and awareness regarding the perils that face the Indian River Lagoon. The first River Challenge was organized in 2012 by President of Capt. Hiram’s Resort, Will Collins, as a way to stay fit and give back to the community. The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America. Locals and visitors alike can attest to the unique beauty of the area. “We have introduced countless people to our little stretch of paradise through this race, many of whom have become strong activists for our cause. We are proud of our accomplishments so far, but there is still so much more to be done. If you want to be part of the solution, get involved locally. The Capt. Hiram’s River Challenge is a perfect way to get started”, said Will in a statement. The goal of the River Challenge Triathlon is to showcase the beauty of Sebastian and to raise money and awareness for local environmental organizations and their

efforts. The River Challenge beneficiaries include the Environmental Learning Center (ELC), the Coastal Conversation Association (CCA), and the Ocean Research and Conservation Association (ORCA). These organizations have a common ground that focuses on the conservation and preservation of the Indian River Lagoon. Over the past 6 years, the River Challenge Triathlon has raised over $23,000 for these organizations. The Capt. Hiram’s River Challenge is open to all ages and levels from the experienced triathlete to the amateur athlete. Sam Vash, Race Director for the Tri, explains, “it's not just about our preservation efforts - which are a HUGE part of our cause it's also about the people. The tri circuit is very close-knit, and a lot of the participants know each other from other races. It's imperative to us that we put on a fun and unique race that's inclusive of all skill levels”. Since its inaugural race in 2012, the River Challenge has grown from 75 to now over 200 participants. It’s important to note that each of those race entries has contributed to the overall goal of restoring the waterfront community.

How to Get Involved There are many ways to get involved in the River Challenge Triathlon both as an athlete and as a spectator. The River Challenge is looking for n-kind and monetary contributions from sponsors. Items needed for the Tri include but are not limited to race T-shirts, race medals and plaques, and swag bags for racers. For more information on sponsorship opportunities please visit https://www.hirams.com/triathlon. If you are interested in supporting the cause as a sponsor, please contact Sam Vash at 772-581-6179 or email: svash@hirams.com. The River Challenge is also looking for volunteers. We will need volunteers to assist in set up/tear down of the event, hand out water to racers, and boost overall racer morale! In addition to volunteering during the Triathlon, Capt. Hiram’s is also looking for volunteers to participate in a river cleanup that will take place on Saturday, September 21st which is also National Clean-Up Day. Volunteers will meet at Capt. Hiram’s Resort and then split into two teams, one

heading south and one heading north, to clean up trash along Indian River Drive and surrounding water areas. Stay Connected, Receive Updates, and Get Excited! The triathlon takes place on Sunday, November 17th at Capt. Hiram’s Resort. For information regarding racer registration and how to become a sponsor please visit https://www.hirams.com/triathlon. Connect with us on social media to receive race tips and tricks and updates as we get closer to race day! Sweet Susie’s Sizzle by Susan Baran Being a Realtor, people always ask me what I think about the real estate market and what is happening in the market itself. Will prices keep going up, will the market slow down - all very real questions for today’s homeowner or homebuyer. It is a well known fact that we have reached a new “high” here in Indian River County and it has been a seller’s market for some time. But is this trend changing? We look at some of the market shifts to help people make the best decisions for them and their real estate needs. One of the factors we look at is how long does property sit on the market from the time it is listed to the time an offer is accepted. When we look at year over year for IRC, we are up in median time to contract from 46 days to 55 days. This is almost 20% longer than this time last year.* Buyers are not acting as quick to new inventory, and homes are sitting on the market longer. And we all know when homes sit on the market longer they are more susceptible to low-ball offers and stronger negotiations to come down in price. In my opinion, I believe this is a push back to the pricing we have reached with seller’s expectations being on the high side. We see

evidence of this in our average sale price of homes. Just in May of this year, we topped out at a new high average of $339,170, but in August the average price was $261,467**. Wow, big difference. Are we switching to a buyer’s market… we are definitely in a changing trend with housing. If you are reading this City Guide article, how does this information benefit you? Well, if you are looking to buy a home this is good news. You have a little more time to make up your mind. You do not have to feel pressured that a home will be gone if you do not make an offer the same day you see it. And, you will most likely have room to negotiate a better price. If you are selling a home, you need to understand the market is shifting. If you want the top dollar for your home, you will have to do the extras to make this happen: cleanliness, staging, updates and strong curb appeal. If you want to move quickly in the sale of your home and time is of the essence, price it competitively. Know what your competition is in your price range and style of home. Buyers are willing to look a little longer if they feel a seller’s expectations are too high. But whether you are a buyer or a seller in today’s market make sure to understand what is happening in Indian River County – make an informed decision which is the best decision for you. Susan Baran is a Think-Outside-The-Box Realtor with Fischer Realty and Investments finding solutions for problems in real estate. *Florida Realtor’s Market Reports ** Realtor’s Associate of Indian River County

“It’s Okay to Get Help!” Every person sitting in the Mental Health Association (MHA) in Indian River County’s waiting rooms has a story to tell:

a man living with PTSD, a woman recently diagnosed with depression due to a miscarriage, a child struggling in school due to ADHD, among many other situations. People of all ages, backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences come to us, connected only by their need for affordable mental health care. These individuals and others like them can be afforded an opportunity for an improved quality of life through access to a continuum of care, the reduced stigma of mental health issues, and increased integration and acceptance within a community that has an informed understanding of mental health issues. Last year alone the MHA is proud to say that we have provided about 10,000 professional services to almost 1,300 unduplicated clients, including nearly 900 mental health screenings, 5,210 psychotherapy sessions, 900 psychiatry visits, and 4000 group services, including our free support groups. We also completed the LifeSkills portion of our High School Violence and Suicide Prevention Program, reaching nearly 1,000 high school

students in Vero Beach and Sebastian. After the completion of this course, we had over 20 of the students we taught come see us at our Walk-In & Counseling Center. The MHA is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing immediate access with no barriers to mental health care. The Walk-In & Counseling Center located in Vero Beach provides Indian River County residents (children and adults) in crisis an immediate mental health screening free of charge without an appointment (a nominal fee for those out of county). The MHA also operates Drop-In Centers in Vero Beach, Stuart, and Okeechobee. The DropIn Centers, open 365 days a year, are peer-operated, recoveryoriented environments in the community that provide a safe, friendly, supportive and confidential place where people with similar experiences are not judged.

Oysters served at the Green Marlin Restaurant & Raw Bar can be a dinner’s delight, but now the oysters have a higher purpose. The restaurant is one of the few in the area to partner with the Indian River Oyster Company’s Shuck & Share program. A lagoon restoration effort through oyster recycling. Green Marlin typically sells over 1,200 oysters every week - that’s a lot of shells! This program provides sealed buckets to place the empty oyster shells in. Volunteers pick up the oysters a few times each week. There is a process where the oysters must be quarantined for a period before they can be used to create beds and other living objects in the lagoon. “It’s exciting to know that all these shells will have a new intent,” said restaurant owner and operator, Lou Kolbauer. The Shuck and Share program is a collaborative effort initiated by the Marine Discovery Center (MDC), Indian River Oyster Company, and several seafood restaurants. As described in the MDC’s website: Shucked oyster shells from the local restaurants are kept out of the landfill,

converted into new reef-building materials through volunteer efforts and recycled back into the natural system, ultimately helping to build and strengthen the reef. “ We love that we can sell raw oysters, but it is so crucial that all those shells will find a new role in helping the community and the environment. We hope that others will join the effort. It’s a great way to recycle, save our landfill and lagoon. We want Green Marlin to be the place Locals go, and we can certainly give back in this small way,” said Kolbauer. Checkout Green Marlin’s menu and specials at www.thegreenmarlin.com.

CINEMA DE LA MER: The Super Secret White Party Returns to Vero Beach Check your inbox! CINEMA DE LA MER: The Super Secret White Party is back!

The annual clandestine cinematic celebration will be held Saturday, November 23, 2019, and benefits the Vero Beach Wine + Film Festival, a non-profit 50I(c)(3) organization. The festive fundraiser feast helps offset the substantial costs of producing the annual award-winning Vero Beach Wine + Film Festival in June which has been named “The Summer Sundance” by the HuffPost and ranks in the “Top 100” of film festivals globally. The fourth installment of the spectacular Treasure Coast soirée—which in the past has been held locally on the fountain plaza at Royal Palm Pointe and on the sand at South Beach—follows the same strict rules as in years prior: Every person must reserve their seat in advance online, wear the official party attire of “all-white”, and bring their own picnic dinner, fine chinaware preferred and tablescape. Movies, music, entertainment and flowing fine wines are provided. Party location is kept secret until 48 hours prior to the event. It’s like one big Hollywood-style escapade – and fabulously fun!

Everyone is encouraged to host a table of fabulous friends, extended family, wonderful workmates, fellow foodies, nearby neighbors, gym club buddies, and marvelous moms for a girl’s night out. This exceptional evening will be marked by good food, great conversation, and many opportunities to create long-lasting connections. New this year: “The Top Table Contest!” If you’re a hostess with the mostest, dining design creative or an inspired culinary diva, come unleash your dinner party talents to create a spectacular scene-stealing table setting. The Top Table dressed for dinner will be rewarded with a Vero Beach Wine & Film Festival Prize Package of $500. Also, for the first time, reserved tables will be available at the 400 persons plus outside dinner party at an iconic location under the stars. Guests from last year’s event will receive priority invites to this year’s event. Reserved tables of ten: $750. General admission: $60 per person. To receive your invitation, please register at VBWFF.com. See you that night all dressed in white!

One woman's story is the story of many SURVIVOR is a very personal memoir of a sweet looking, sad-eyed child who graces the cover. Her daddy drank, and so began the cover-up. There were secrets. "No one must know. Never tell a soul." In her memoir, she does tell, she shares with you her struggles and secrets about everything! SURVIVOR, the story of her life as a child of a successful, yet emotionally abusive Irish-American, serious binge drinker and an extremely chilly, highly aristocratic mother who had little time for her child. Having had little nurturing and less in the way of guidance, Jane was confused about who she was or about how to be. She nurtured herself by binge eating. At eight, she discovered the sleepinducing effects of Dramamine, at twelve, amphetamines, much later, pot and alcohol with a cast of characters

in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the Hamptons and finally Summerplace in Vero Beach. The addiction was always to more, more of everything and to serious partying. Roles were played, mistakes were made, disasters happened, times were high - too high. When the pain was so great, she thought she might never climb out of it she found a recovery group and the love and nurturing she had always longed for, who she was underneath it all and the love and the willingness to help others. She knew she had a story to tell and the ability to tell it. And so began her writing journey. When this very personal writing got tough, the idea that it might help others pushed her on. Jane has gone from merely surviving to absolutely thriving. It turns out SURVIVOR is a “can't put it down, page-turner. SURVIVOR is available at The VERO Beach Book Center and AMAZON.
