Back in Business and Giving Back to the Community Through Faith

Mattress Market is a local business with a heart to help non-profits and ministries. A $2,499 mattress was raffled off at Mattress Market’s recent well-attended Grand Opening. All of the proceeds of the raffle went to “The House of Transfiguration”, a new ministry of Oceans Unite Christian Center and The Real Mission, and a place where homeless women can come to get renewed and retrained. The house will also help transform individuals by renewing their mind in the Word of God.

Steve and Janice Milesic, owners of Mattress Market, and their family of 4 children, have been long-time residents of Vero Beach. They care about our community and are actively involved with local causes and ministries in Vero Beach. Teaming up with The House of Transfiguration was just one way they give back. Mattress Market is a family owned and operated business. Steve is a long-time veteran of the mattress industry with over 30 years of experience. Janice is a seasoned public relations professional. Their son, Michael, is their warehouse manager.

At Mattress Market, they provide a high level of customer service and best selections of mattresses to meet all of your needs. That means a relaxing experience as you try out brands like Serta Perfect-Sleeper and Simmons Beauty-Rest as well as their exclusive, luxury brand Posh & Lavish. The Milesic family believes in giving back to our community in Vero Beach. They support several homeless organizations such as The House of Transfiguration. Often when a ministry has bedding needs, when they are helping someone get back in a comfortable living environment, the Milesics will help make it happen. When you patronize Mattress Market, not only are you supporting a small local business, you are also empowering them to give back to our community. Come in today, sleep better tonight. Mattress Market is located at 1602 US-1 in Vero Beach, and their phone number is (772) 562-6007.

“Hold on... How is THAT Concrete?!” ... is the most frequent question/exclamation she gets about her work. “Most people can’t believe their eyes when they see our decorative concrete installations - they have to touch it,” says Crystal PloszayOwner and Lead Artisan at Unicorn Epoxy. ‘I like to explain my work as not just concrete, but a way to express your personality, to convey a feeling. How do you want to feel when you walk into your space? With our Artisan’s techniques, experience and skill, we can create your ideal space...without all the shopping that typically goes into finding your perfect surface.’

Surface? What do you meanconcrete isn’t just for floors? Sure, our team does a fair amount of flooring installations (imagine concrete floors that look like wood inside- or outside on your pool deck...or a designer epoxy garage floor that looks like marble) But we also fabricate and install countertops, accent walls, outdoor furniture and fire tables. I love doing stuff like that- concrete is a liquid, essentially, and thinking of it like that enables us to get endlessly creative with our designs.

“Concrete wood” residential

How long does a typical project take your team to install?

I usually schedule five days for each project, but it depends on the unique installation. We work faster than most people expect. I attribute much of that to our Mobile Studio that we have on site at every project. We’ve set ourselves up for success by having everything super organized and systematized. I’ve invested in the best machinery in the industry so we can provide top notch service to our clients at the height of the industry standard.

Industry Standard...What does that mean?

Well...Knowing the industry and how to do proper installations with a proper safety standard is what makes us different from other companies- painters who want to do your garage floor, or people who ‘invented’ a new way to do it. I’ve worked with over 400 different materials and know the spec sheets back and forth on every one. That’s why people call me from all over the world for advice on their projects. The science behind

Residential kitchen

why these materials act the way they do is what enables me to create almost anything out of them. Understanding the physics of what the materials are doing and why is just as important as technique.

Speaking of technique, you’ve got a few up your sleeve, haven’t you? Haha, yes. I’ve actually been a guest artist on several different installations all over the nation. I’m gaining a bit of a reputation within the industry worldwide and have been doing a lot of traveling to teach classes and inspire other concrete artisans to incorporate some of these techniques to their companies. Some of these techniques include installing concrete and hand texturing and staining it to appear to be wood, or bricks or limestone. In Oklahoma, I taught counter-top techniques, and just got back from a project in Illinois that featured my Boardwalk collection and Concrete Aquatic Scenes (Which is coming soon to Mrs. Macs in Key Largo- omg that one will be fun!)

But you’re from right here in Vero Beach, right? That’s right! I’ve been here my whole life, and love it. While we travel frequently, most of our installations are here in this area. I’ve got two children and like to be close to themgosh it goes too fast!

Mrs. Mac’s in Key Largo

You’ve done a lot around here then? Yes, you can see my installations at Waldos, the Driftwood, McKee Gardens, DiMare, Treasure Coast Corals, Sebastian Smiles and Mrs. Mac’s Key Largo just to name a few. Most of the coolest stuff is private residential though. You can see some of that if you look on our website, or Facebook Unicorn Epoxy.

How do we find you and learn more? You can give me a ring anytime to brainstorm a project at 772.501.3324 or come visit me anytime at my Studio, which is open to the public at the Vero Airport Trade Center, 2501 27th Ave (unit F9) to check out what we are working on now and see some examples of my work. We are always doing something fun!

Our mission centers around every parent, regardless of income or zip code, to have the knowledge and tools they need to raise healthy and productive children. We believe parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. Families can raise smart babies through simple, everyday interactions. KRC works with more than 40 local partners to bring quality resources to our youngest citizens. With these collaborative partners, KRC has led transformative work in the birth to five sectors, particularly in the “pockets of poverty” in Indian River County. KRC’s Family Engagement Initiative, which is comprised of Family Connection Centers and communitywide events, makes the local early childhood system stronger and more robust to help all children be prepared for kindergarten. KRC’s Family Connection Centers have the unique ability to help families improve their quality of life by building parents’ and children’s knowledge and skills while also addressing underlying family issues.

KRC’s Family Engagement Initiative is a collaborative model being developed in Indian River County, FL. Evidence-based and research-based techniques are incorporated into this model to serve our diverse population.

KRC’s Family Engagement Initiative focuses on getting children ready for school by incorporating these elements: • • • • • •

empowering parents and caregivers to take an active role in their child’s development encouraging preschool and VPK attendance supporting early identification of special needs demonstrating age-appropriate activities families can perform at home improving access to local programs and services helping coordinate the fragmented local early childhood system

Uniquely she and both her sisters fight the rare affliction. Nahzi was inspired to find organic alternatives after her older sister suffered a massive stroke in 2014. Nazhi began educating herself about the history of Sickle Cell. She learned about what are called “Trigger Foods” that if eliminated could help people living with Sickle Cell stay healthy. Nazhi took her natural talent and love for baking and began to explore New

Second Annual MHA ROCKS Party slated for Feb 22 The Mental Health Association (MHA) in Indian River County is excited to announce the Second Annual MHA ROCKS! Party. This year’s British Invasion celebration will feature BeatleBeat, who will rock Oak Harbor’s Clubhouse on Saturday, February 22, 2020. BeatleBeat is a group of world-class musicians who are all veterans of the cast of Beatlemania, Legends in Concert, and Walt Disney World’s British Invasion band at EPCOT. We know that music therapy motivates people to become engaged in their treatment and provides emotional support for clients and their families. Through the generous support of the community, we were able to offer 706 free mental health screenings, 328 diagnostic assessments, and provide 423 psycho-educational classes to the residents of this incredible community last year. Additionally, we served 1,179 individuals at our Walk-In & Counseling Center, provided nearly 10,000 services, and completed 2,045 psycho-educational interventions at the Boys and Girls Club of IRC. In 2019, we reached 970 students through our School Violence and Suicide Prevention Program, a number we plan to more than double in 2020.

The MHA in Indian River County is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing immediate access with no barriers to mental health care. We are an affiliate of Mental Health America and are a United Way Agency of Excellence. In August of 2019, the MHA celebrated 60 years of serving Indian River County. The MHA’s Walk-In & Counseling Center provides crisis intervention, psychotherapy services, and medication management services to children and adults. We also offer information, referrals, case management, self-help groups, psychoeducational groups, and group therapy. There are also three Drop-In Centers located in Vero Beach, Okeechobee, and Stuart. These Centers are peer-operated, recovery-oriented environments that provide a safe, friendly, supportive, and confidential place where people with similar experiences are not judged.

Unplanned Pregnancy

By Kendi Lambert, Director of Client Services, Care Net Pregnancy Center of Indian River County Bonnie Martinelli, Executive Director 772-569-7939

If you find yourself in an unexpected pregnancy, Care Net of Indian River County is your next step.

Care Net of IRC offers free, medical grade self-administered pregnancy tests and referrals for a free ultrasound to determine viability and fetal age. When making a pregnancy decision, these two steps are vital in your decision-making process. An unplanned pregnancy may bring a flood of emotions. You may feel that now is not the best time to step into the role of parenthood, or you may want to be a mom, but don’t think that you will be able to give your child the life you want for them. Perhaps you are struggling to have a healthy relationship with your partner and feel a lack of understanding and support. At Care Net of IRC, we understand that you are facing a tremendous, life-changing decision

Clients Ludjine & Chris with baby that is being held by Client Advocate Connie

We can help you at any stage of your pregnancy

and we are here to offer accurate information and compassionate care. We believe that a pregnancy decision should not be rushed, but thought through with the support and information that you need. We are committed to providing a confidential space where you can freely explore your pregnancy options, as well as future goals. In order to achieve this, we offer a Pregnancy Options Consultation to you free of charge. Here we can answer any questions you may have about pregnancy, fetal development, parenting, adoption, and abortion. Unlike Planned Parenthood, Care Net of IRC does not profit from an abortion decision. We do not perform or refer for abortions, but we are here to explore your options and foster healing, hope, and meaningful change. At Care Net of IRC, we are a ministry that wants you and your family to live abundant lives. We hope

to be a part of creating abundance in your life by providing you with a safe space to receive support, regardless of the choice you make. For women who choose to parent, we have an education and material services program where we help foster and develop your parenting skills and knowledge. As you complete this program, we offer material support through our Baby Boutique. For women and men who choose adoption, we offer support throughout the adoption process and after. For women who make an abortion decision, or have made one in the past, we offer post-abortion counseling to help men and women reach a place of healing and freedom. We know that you are a unique individual with a story that is distinctly yours. If you think you may be pregnant today, you do not have

to walk through this journey alone. We honor the courage it takes to ask questions and consider your options. We consider it a privilege to know you, hear your story, and be a part of the next chapter of your life. We are here for you emotionally, physically, spiritually and to provide a way for you to earn free material items for your baby. For appointments, please call (772) 569-7939.

Legislative Update from Washington By Congressman Bill Posey

While partisan politics is on display in Washington, I thought I would take a few moments to share with you some actions I have taken to advance commonsense solutions to addressing important issues like lowering the high cost of prescription drugs, protecting our natural treasures, and leveling the playing field so American businesses can better compete with China. Protecting Access to Medical Care The high cost of prescription drugs continues to leave many folks struggling to afford the medical treatments they desperately need. To combat the rising cost of care and access to medication, I’ve supported a variety of bipartisan measures that would address shortfalls in our healthcare system to cut drug prices for all Americans. In addition to protecting those with pre-existing conditions, I have cosponsored H.R. 3107, Improving Senior’s Timely Access to Care Act that will stop the insurance companies’ policy of prior approval that causes unnecessary delays in getting treatment. I’ve also continued to advocate for more affordable insurance by supporting legislation to repeal the federal tax on health plans. Finally, knowing that many of our loved ones are struggling with cancer

and Alzheimer’s, I’ve cosponsored legislation that ensures equal access to oral cancer drugs and advocated for legislation to expand services to aid those showing signs of Early Onset Alzheimer’s. My hope is that House leaders will bring these important initiatives to a vote. Combatting Coastal Acidification and Algal Blooms - Florida is home to unique and delicate wildlife, some of which can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Maintaining the integrity of our Indian River Lagoon and other natural treasures has been a priority for me. In June, the House passed my bipartisan NEAR Act which will study the effects of coastal acidification on our estuaries and other waterways so we can better manage and mitigate its effects. Additionally, I co-authored bipartisan legislation which was signed into law by the President Trump to continue important research into harmful algal blooms and hypoxia events that plague our lagoon and estuaries across the nation. Updating our flood maps - One of the biggest problems with flood insurance is that our flood rate maps haven’t been updated in about 20 years and is way overdue. We need to

be equipped with the most accurate information to better prepare ourselves for in the aftermath of major storms. To aid in these efforts I introduced bipartisan legislation to make remapping our flood plains cheaper, faster, and more accurate by requiring the Department of Defense, U.S. Geological Survey, and NOAA to share their maps and other important mapping data with FEMA. I’m pleased to report that in June the House Financial Services Committee voted to approve our plan and advance it with other flood insurance legislation. Competing with China – Over the summer I met with White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro to discuss how too much regulation and bad trade practices have hindered our ability to compete with China. China

has a long history of stealing our intellectual property, hacking our computers forcing technology transfers and manipulating its currency to give itself an unfair competitive edge. Additionally, China is the main culprit in dumping large amounts of fentanyl, an opioid and form of synthetic heroin, on our streets which has destroyed the lives of tens of thousands of Americans. We need to get serious about the growing threat that an unchecked China poses to American businesses, workers, and families. As your representative in Congress, I will continue to fight for common sense ideas that help Washington serve you better. If you need assistance with a federal agency, please do not hesitate to reach out to my local office at 321-632-1776.

Congressman Posey and His Staff are Here to Serve You! If you have a problem with a federal government agency such as Social Security, Medicare, Veterans Affairs, etc., please feel free to contact my office.

Gifford Youth Orchestra to Celebrate

17th Anniversary

For seventeen years, the Gifford Youth Orchestra has brought the gift of music to at-risk children from Indian River County, enriching their lives and setting them on the path to a successful future. The GYO celebrates its crystal anniversary on March 7 at the Heritage Center in Vero Beach. “Research shows definitively that learning music is a key to doing well in every class a child takes,” says GYO founder and creative director, Dr. Crystal Bujol. “It’s certainly proved to be the case with our kids: everyone who has been with us through high school is either now in college or has graduated. Our most recent graduate, from South Florida University, is now teaching violin in Hillsborough County elementary schools.” Students enrolled in the GYO receive year-round lessons on instruments that are loaned to them. “But they receive more,” says Dr. Bujol. “One of our

mottoes is ‘Each one, teach one.’ Older students help teach younger ones, and more advanced children learn to conduct the orchestra. They learn not only teamwork but leadership. We teach them etiquette and public speaking through Jr. Toastmasters. By the time they graduate, they’re poised and well prepared to face the world. They make us all very proud.” Currently, the GYO teaches violin and piano and plans to offer choral training later in the year. Sixty-one children are enrolled, and there is a waiting list. “We continue to grow,” says Dr. Bujol, “but there’s always room for one more.” More about the Gifford Youth Orchestra can be learned at its website, gyotigers. org. Tickets for the March 7 celebration are $50 and can be obtained by sending a check to Gifford Youth Orchestra, PO Box 691166, Vero Beach, FL 32969.

Restaurant Review:

By Susan Harris

Unless you have been living under the "proverbial rock " this past month you have had to have heard the buzz about Savor which started the moment their sign went up at the old Vero Prime location (901 21st Street, Vero Beach).

As we strolled up to the front doors the aromas that surrounded us signaled (at least to my tummy) that there were good things happening in the kitchen. Little did I know that the husband wife team of Chef Jason and Hallie Alfonso were serving: fresh - made from scratch - magic that night. Hallie will tell you that everything is made from scratch including dessert! That the desserts change each day. And that Chef Jason is very particular about the seafood and meat that he purchases fresh daily.

puree, chive and a lemon beurre blanc sauce. Don't miss this dish it's incredible. When I heard sweet pea puree I had my doubts but I'm a believer. The fried Ahi Tuna Roll which is wrapped in nori with soba noodles, cream cheese and carrots is another winner as was the roasted beet and goat cheese salad which had the surprise of glazed pistachios, arugula and both red and gold beets. By the way if you can't get a reservation at Savor you can eat at the bar and from 4- 5:30 pm Monday thru Friday the appetizers are half price (except the King Crab and Butter).

We started with the Rock Shrimp Chive & Gnocchi appetizer. which has a sweet pea

Now once again I was a doubter and when I saw the U-10 Scallops & Parsnips I did think: Are they kidding? I love scallops but parsnips? I think this dish was the hit of the evening. Everyone was amazed. The duck glazed carrots, parsnip puree and orange beurre blanc were perfect. Light but filling and kissed by the sea with that flavor that only happens when scallops are fresh.

Rock Shrimp Chive & Gnocchi

Fried Ahi Tuna Roll

The Fillet with a bearnaise sauce, charred brussels sprouts and truffle mac and cheese was incredible. The fillet was the best that we had tasted in a long time - very tender and packed with flavor. Steak lovers will be pleased. But the charred brussel sprouts were kismet and once again our table was delighted. Our resident burger expert gave thumbs up on his Burger & Truffle Fries which paired with his Florida micro brewed beer left him with a smile. Here's the other amazing part about Savor. I commented that the Brussel sprouts were amazing and asked if I could have them instead with a dish and they said sure that they were in the business to please their customers. WOW. Sadly, when dessert was offered, we were all full; but said that we would share the pumpkin cheesecake. I'm not a pumpkin fan....but by now you get the picture. We all agreed it was superb

Sweet Susie’s Sizzle by Susan Baran Is it worthwhile to invest in home improvements? For a home seller who wants to maximize his or her house sale earnings, it may be beneficial to invest in property enhancements. In fact, there are many reasons why now may be a good time to perform property upgrades. These reasons include: 1. You can make your house an attractive option to prospective buyers. As a home seller, it is important to do everything possible to help your house stand out to potential buyers. If you dedicate time and resources to perform property improvements, you could make your home an attractive option to buyers. And as a result, you may be able to speed up the home selling journey. When it comes to performing home improvements, it is important to remember that even minor upgrades can make a world of difference. Thus, if you start small with home improvement projects, you may be able to significantly enhance your residence. 2. You can differentiate your house from the competition. Oftentimes, it can be tough for a home seller to differentiate his or her residence from comparable properties in the same city or

town. If you conduct home improvements, however, you could distinguish your home from the pack. New siding, a new roof or other home upgrades are sure to impress lots of prospective buyers. Therefore, if you invest in home improvements, you could make it easy for buyers to see exactly what your house has to offer. And if a buyer likes what he or she sees, this individual may be more inclined than ever before to submit an offer to purchase. 3. You can boost your house's value. Home improvements enable you to upgrade your house's condition. As such, you could bolster the value of your home if you invest in property improvements today. Ultimately, it may be helpful to conduct home improvements and receive a property appraisal before you list your residence. This may allow you to receive the best-possible appraisal for your house. Perhaps most important, with an appraisal report in hand, you can price your home competitively based on its age and condition. As you prepare to enter the housing market, you may want to hire a real estate agent too. If you employ a real estate agent, you can receive extensive support throughout the property selling journey. In most instances, a real estate agent can offer recommendations about potential home improvements. This housing market professional can help you prioritize home improvement projects and ensure you can make the most of the time and resources at your disposal. A real estate agent also will respond to your home selling concerns and questions at any point during the property selling journey. Plus, he or she will host home showings and open house events and do whatever it takes to generate interest in your house. Perform home improvements – you'll be glad you did. If you upgrade your residence both inside and outside, you could increase the likelihood of a fast, profitable house selling experience. Susan Baran is a Think-Outside-The-Box Realtor with Fischer Realty and Investments finding solutions for your real estate needs.

Counter Culture Keeps Getting Better!

A year ago, we reviewed Counter Culture at The Boulevard Tennis Club on Indian River Boulevard in Vero Beach. The delicious, fresh healthy cuisine created by the husband wife team of Chef Anthony & Chef Lisa still dazzles. And the secret is out. Open to the public, diners keep coming back and recommend Counter Culture to their friends. Each month the Vero Beach Christian Business Association and the Vero Beach Social Tea Club have a delicious luncheon there. Counter Culture supports and host many events including Wine Women and Shoes, the Humane Society, Sally Wilkey Foundation, Marty Fish Foundation For Children, and Friendship House Anti-Cancer Cooking Classes. The food at Counter Culture is 90% organic and reasonably priced. The proverbial bang for the buck. Overlooking gardens and tennis courts and newly decorated with beautiful plants. Great for events and parties they seat up to 150 people and open for both lunch and dinner.

Women's Refuge Second Annual Christmas Banquet

National Speaker and Author Rebekah Lyons was the keynote presenter at the Women’s Refuge Second Annual Christmas Banquet. Recently held at Oak Harbor Club in Vero Beach, the event drew nearly three hundred people in support of the Refuge’s mission serving the emotionally and spiritually wounded. The evening featured a magnificent silent auction display, and wonderful music performance led by Donathan and Kimberly Williams, directors of the Called Higher Choir of Calvary Chapel Vero and Calvary Chapel Fellowship St. Petersburg. Executive Director Diane Ludwig says, “Rebekah’s experience with despair echoes the cries of those arriving at the Women’s Refuge: women and men who can’t imagine how they’ll live for one more day without hope. Just as God called Rebekah to show those who are hurting, the way to hope, so also God calls the Refuge to lead people out of their depression, out of anxiety, out of the captivity of emotional darkness and to step into grace, freedom and purpose for their lives.” For 22 years, the Women’s Refuge has offered help, hope, and lifelong healing from life’s traumas, a place to experience spiritual renewal and emotional transformation. The agency provides a Christian residential program for women who stay for a few days or a few months, a biblical counseling center for women, men, and families to help them with day to day trials plus life-changing support groups for the community. The Women’s Refuge would like to thank Platinum Sponsor Bernard A. Egan Foundation; Gold Sponsors Glen & Cheryl Deal and Holy Cross Catholic Church; Silver Sponsors Agricultural Services Intl, and Vero Beach Global Advisors; Bronze Sponsor William

Home – In his Pulitzer Prize winning book, Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, Matthew Desmond, professor in the Department of Sociology at Princeton University, states that without stable shelter, everything else falls apart. Housing is an integral piece of the puzzle that connects everything. Put another way, it’s at the center of everything. It is connected to health, determines where your children go to school, affects the kinds of jobs you have access to and what people and their children are exposed to. Increasingly though, in almost every county in the United states, research and study after study are showing us that the issue of affordable housing has become critical. In Indian River County, an individual would need to earn an hourly wage of $18.48 in order to afford a modest 2-bedroom apartment rental. If you’re earning minimum wage, you would need to work 2.7 full time jobs in order to meet the fair market rent in our community. Understanding the effect that housing security has on financial stability, Indian River Habitat works to empower working families by

It’s More than Just a House providing them with a sustainable, long-term solution to the need for housing – an affordable path to homeownership. To help meet the affordable housing need and serve more families, Indian River Habitat is in the 4th year of a strategic plan whose goal is to serve 500 families within a 5-year time frame. On track to meet this goal, Indian River Habitat will serve at least 100 families this year, partnering with them to either build a safe, affordable place to call home or helping them improve an already existing home. The affiliate's strategic plan goal will ultimately result in the affiliate serving almost as many families in 5 years as it did over the previous 25-year period. It all began in 1990 when a group of volunteers and philanthropists – wanting to address the issue of housing insecurity – began working on establishing a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Indian River County. Thirty years later, Indian River Habitat continues to serve families, partnering with them to either build a safe, affordable place to call home or helping them improve an already existing home.

The Edden family, pictured here, are well-known, active members of the Vero Beach community. Mr. Edden (in blue) is President of the Homeowners Association at Habitat’s Waterside community. He and his wife (in long sleeves) are pictured here outside their Habitat home with their children. Not pictured are the eldest, first-born daughter – away at college; and first-born son – now married and serving in the U.S. military.

Love Doctors “imp”rovise for the chimps at Waldos Dec 6

Lee Olsen, general manager of the well-known, all-American “hang-out” Waldos Restaurant, was happy to see the pounds and pounds of Bananas, blankets and Teddy Bears all piled up in the middle of his dining room floor.

The Love Docs were doing their show live, collecting new Teddy Bears and Blankets and Bananas to donate to Save the Chimps, the world’s largest chimp sanctuary, located in Ft Pierce Florida. Over 250 retired chimpanzees now live in large family groups on 12 separate three-acre islands, where they receive three fresh meals daily, first-rate medical care, and a variety of activities in an enriched environment.

“The Chimps, much like children, love to snuggle bears and blankies. And eat bananas. Anyone who brings in a new item will be entered to win some cool prizes” Olsen said. Save the chimp people staff and volunteers were on hand as well as the Tito’s Vodka girls. Hairpeace followed Love docs. In the past two years this event has drawn past celebrities of the love doc show for a fun “reunion” of sorts. A Special u-pick it auctions of Chimp art, vacations and other gift certificates including a $500 diamond gift certificate donated by iHeart media and the International Diamond Exchange in Port St Lucie was also held to raise funds.

The 2020 Census is coming to Indian River County on April 1, 2020 and is required by law that we perform the Census every 10 years. Our first Census in the U.S. took place in 1790 and was performed by the local sheriff of each town, county, or parish and revealed that our county had a population of approximately 3.4 million people! It is interesting to note that our 1st Census was actually hand counted and took several months to complete. This upcoming Census should reveal that we have approximately 340 million people in the United States, with nearly 22 million people calling Florida their home. This Census will be a bit different in that you will be able to go online this year to fill out your questionnaire. There are 9 questions on the 2020 Census and will take each family approximately 10 minutes to complete- the controversial citizenship question was removed in

July of 2019. The motto of this year's Census is to "Count Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place." Each household will receive an "invitation" by way of a postcard to complete their Census ballot in mid-March of 2020. If you do not fill out your ballot at that time, a reminder notice will be sent out the last week of March. The 2020 Census can be done online, by mail, or by calling in your Census data to a Census official. Your information is confidential and safe, and will not be shared with any other local, state or federal agency. Robert Loring and Aimee Hill are our local Partnership Specialists and Representatives for the 2020 Census in Indian River County; for any additional information, you can contact them via e-mail at robert.j.loring@2020census. gov or at aimee.m.hill@2020census.gov. or by calling 678-938-1380.
