November is known as one of the pleasantest months of the year in Hong Kong, its weather characterised by cool temperatures, low humidity and little rainfall. That makes it the ideal time to explore Hong Kong’s great outdoors. And there is no better way to enjoy it than hiking the extensive network of trails that crisscross the city’s country parks, islands, coastlines and beaches. Yes, the hiking season has started in earnest. To discover the walks to suit your preference and fitness, please visit our cover story on page 10 on the city’s ten best hiking trails. This whole month has been designated The Hong Kong Great November Feast, with visitors able to sample special menus and offerings by many of the city’s finest dining outlets. Or, if you find yourself craving that familiar comfort food that always settles your mood, or just need a good carbo-fix, Hong Kong offers comfort foods from a wide range of cuisines. Whether it’s pizza, a plate of char siu fan, or a piping hot bowl of noodles, the city has it all. Please turn to page 15 for our feature story ‘Hong Kong’s Ultimate Comfort Food Guide’. The nice weather also brings forth several high-profile sporting events happening this month. In Fanling in the New Territories, some of the world’s best professional golfers will be teeing off at the Hong Kong Open (golf), the oldest standing professional sporting event in the city, now in its 61st year. The prestigious Hong Kong Badminton Open will also be held this month as top-ranked professional players from around the world vie for the coveted trophies. And if sea sports are your thing, then you won’t want to miss the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships which take place in Hong Kong for the first time. For the first time ever, the WRCC will be held in Asia and in the urban area of a metropolitan city. It’s expected about 700 top coastal rowers from all over the world will join the race, including world medallists. In order to promote the coastal rowing sport to the general public, the organising committee will bring a World Championships Festival to Central Harbourfront. A series of education and public engagement activities will be organised from early October 2019.

Hong Kong International Literary Festival
The Hong Kong International Literary Festival unveils an outstanding programme today for its 19th edition, featuring Markus Zusak, Pico Iyer, Jennifer 8. Lee and Booker Long List author, John Lanchester. The Festival will focus on themes of identity, migration and dystopia across a wide range of media including readings, workshops and performances.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club: Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Day
For a genuine Hong Kong cultural experience, try your luck at the horse races, the city’s favourite sporting pastime. This month mark your calendar for 3 November, when all eyes will be on the Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Day race meeting featuring exciting races accompanied by a glittering programme of fashion activities. The Tourist Zone (2/F, Grandstand II) at Sha Tin Racecourse offers a spacious and comfortable environment with its balcony a prime site for expansive views of the giant Diamond Vision screen and the racetrack where visitors can experience all the thrills of the races. There’s live Putonghua commentary and numerous LCD TVs broadcast real-time racing updates. Horse racing takes place normally at either the Happy Valley Racecourse on Wednesday nights and the Sha Tin Racecourse on weekends. Be sure to take in a race outing as part of your visit experience in Hong Kong.

More than 1,000 international exhibitors are expected to participate the fair this year, where they will be showcasing their exquisite wines and spirits from around the globe. Fuelled by booming market demand and an established reputation for excellence, the fair in 2018 attracted nearly 19,000 trade buyers from 73 countries and regions.

Freespace Jazz Fest
The first Freespace Jazz Fest, a new annual event, brings together a stellar line-up of local and international artists – including the Robert Glasper Trio, GoGo Penguin, House of Waters, Noa Drezner Flamenco Quartet and more – for a full weekend of indoor and outdoor performances in Freespace (ticketed), the Art Park and Lau Bak Livehouse. The Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships is one of the top 15 BWF World Tour events, with a grand prize of US$400,000. Macau Grand Prix
This year, the popular Macau Grand Prix, formally the 66th Suncity Grupo Macau Grand Prix – FIA Formula 3 World Cup will feature cars used in the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the first time. In order to accommodate the more powerful racing cars, the organiser has been working closely with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to ensure the 6.2km Guia Circuit is upgraded to an FIA Grade II homologated track this year. These include increasing the buffer zone at Lisboa Bend and providing additional impact protection foam and new safety crash barriers at various points around the circuit.

"Li Yaxian" and A Master Selection of Sichuan Opera Excerpts by Chongqing Chuanju Theatre
Widely known as China’s La Traviata, Li Yaxian is adapted from a Ming dynasty folk tale about the tragic romance between courtesan Li Yaxian and scholar Zheng Yuanhe. In this Chongqing Chuanju Theatre production, Shen Tiemei plays opposite acclaimed Plum Blossom Award winner Sun Yongbo, reinterpreting the classic tale with a modern twist, and portraying Li Yaxian as a working-class woman fighting for the love of her life.

Clockenflap
Hong Kong’s largest music festival, Clockenflap Hong Kong Music and Arts Festival, returns for its 12th edition featuring over 100 acts performing across six stages over the three-day festival. Hong Kong Open (Golf Tournament)
The Hong Kong Open returns to the venerable Hong Kong Golf Club for the 61st edition of Hong Kong’s longest-standing professional sporting event. Arthur Hacker examines the demise of Hong Kong's first and only university on the sea. 亞瑟·克赫探究香港第一所海洋學府無疾而終的原因

ighly successful businessmen who fund educational establishments, museums and public buildings are rather fond of having these institutions named after themselves. As businessmen they like to have something to show for their money. This generally produces a few tiresome letters to the newspapers from disgruntled academics, but as ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes pointed out: "The foundation of every state is the education of its youth," and politicians often neglect this maxim, so the private sector has to help out. Visitors to the Tate Gallery or concert-goers at Carnegie Hall are surely thankful to Sir Henry Tate and Andrew Carnegie, with no ill-feeling, so it is not that naming an institution after its founder is generally regarded as distasteful. When CY Tung, a renowned shipping magnate, bought the great Cunard liner RMS Queen Elizabeth and refitted her as a floating university and luxury cruise ship, he renamed the storied vessel ‘Seawise University’ after himself – it sounds like ‘CY's University’. The concept

of a floating university was original to the point of eccentricity and nobody seemed to worry too much about the quirky pun. With the advent of air travel the great liners had begun to rapidly lose money, so in 1968, Cunard sold the Queen Elizabeth. The new owners berthed her at Port Everglades in Florida and used her as a floating hotel and convention centre. It was not a successful venture and the great ship began to disintegrate. In 1970, Tung bought her for US$3 million (around HK$23.3 million). He repaired the engines and she sailed to Hong Kong under her new name: Seawise University. Her maiden voyage had been made during World War Two, when she was painted battleship grey, and she and her sister ship, the Queen Mary, were used as troop carriers. When she arrived in Hong Kong she was in a pretty sorry state. There had been numerous engine problems during the voyage, and she had to be completely refitted. On 9 January 1972, just five days before the renovation work was due to be complete, several mysterious fires broke out on board. It was a Sunday and the Hong Kong Journalists' Association was having a barbecue at Chi Ma Wan Prison, hosted by a character known as "Dick the Drop", a former hangman. Stranded on Lantau Island, many reporters missed their deadlines,

The fire spread very rapidly, and, despite the massive fire-fighting efforts of the Hong Kong Fire Services, the ship was completely engulfed by late afternoon and attempts to save the vessel had to be abandoned. The fires raged for 26 hours and on the following day she listed starboard and foundered. There was no loss of life but the US$5 million that CY Tung had spent renovating the great ship went up in smoke. Today, CY Tung is best known not so much as a great shipping magnate, but for being the father of Hong Kong's first Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa. The Court of Enquiry's findings were not very helpful: "The Court regrets that it ls unable to assign a certain cause to any of the fires but considers… that the most probable cause was the act or acts of a person or persons unknown."

The burnt-out hulk became a tourist attraction. It was even used as Q's headquarters in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. It was a dismal end for the monarch of the seas.■

12 November 2006 The historic Star Ferry Pier in Central at Edinburgh Place was decommissioned after 48 years of service, replaced by Piers 7 and 8 of the new Central Ferry Piers 300 metres further out. Lamma Island is a favourite weekend destination for locals and visitors alike. Arguably Hong Kong’s most famous hiking trail, the Dragon’s Back starts from To Tei Wan near Shek O Road and ends at Tai Long Wan (Big Wave Bay). After a quick and relatively steep ascent you’ll reach the Dragon’s Back ridge itself, from which you can enjoy truly spectacular scenery of Shek O Beach, the mountains and the South China Sea. Follow the meandering trail down to Tai Long Wan, a haven for surfers or hike another 30 minutes to Shek O village. 龍脊徑可以說是香港最着名的遠足徑，從石澳路附近的土地灣開始，到大浪灣結束。經過相對陡峭的一段上坡， 即可到達龍脊，站在這您可以欣賞到石 蜿蜒蜿蜒的小路走到大浪灣，就可以到達衝浪者的天堂，或者再步行30 分鐘到達石澳村。

This moderately strenuous hike offers a fantastic vista. Start from the entrance of the Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery in Yau Tong which is a winding road up the hill. Look for signs to the Devil’s Peak on Wilson Trail where Gough Battery, an abandoned fort, affords views of the harbour and Hong Kong Island opposite. Follow the Trail along the ridge of the hills with their spectacular views of Kowloon. Check out the Mau Wu Shan Bunker, another remnant of World War II before you continue along the Wilson Trail to reach Po Lam Road, where you can easily pick up a bus back to the city. A nice, relaxing scenic walk just minutes from the city. Start at Pok Fu Lam Reservoir and walk along the Peak Trail towards the Peak. Enter Lugard Road at the Peak and enjoy the splendid views of the city and the harbour. Walk along Harlech Road past the picnic area and walk down on Hatton Road where the relics of Old Pinewood Battery are still visible before walking down to Hong Kong University with plenty of heritage landmarks such as boundary stones and heritage buildings Duration 时长 : along the way. 3 hours 3小時

This is a hiking trail to test your strength and stamina. The route – more than 15 kilometres – includes multiple steep ascents and descents. It’s a popular challenge among experienced hikers with its spectacular views over the reservoir. At the end of the hike is a breezy relaxing stroll on the main dam where you get to see another splendid view of the reservoir. The northwest end of the dam is a popular barbeque site. This hike is not so long but will give you a good workout. Start from Parkview and hike to the top of Violet Hill, then descend to the bottom of the hill, enjoying the gorgeous view of Repulse Bay. From there, you start up the famous “Thousand Steps”, at the summit of which you are rewarded with a panoramic view of Stanley and nearby islands. A real nature hike – pristine environment, unspoilt beaches, hamlet villages and beautiful scenery. This hike follows most of Section 2 of the MacLehose Trail, which starts at High Island Reservoir’s East Dam. Enjoy the great vista of the reservoir before following the trail up the hill and then descending to Long Ke beach, a pristine expanse of white sand. A long, steady ascent to Sai Wan Shan follows, leading eventually down to the beautiful beaches of Ham Tin and Big Wave Bay – widely considered Hong Kong’s finest. After the beaches you return over the hill and 时长 Duration : follow the Section 2 trail, ending at 3 to 4 hours 3至4小時 Pak Tam Au. The ultimate Hong Kong hike for the physically fit. Start at Mui Wo and follow the Lantau Trial Section 1 until you reach Nam Shan and a large BBQ site. Past Nam Shan marks the beginning of Section 2, a strenuous trek that takes you up Sunset Peak (869 metres) and its mesmerising view of Lantau Island and the South China Sea. hris’ Common Room, an Italian restaurant located in a trendy neighbourhood just above Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan, is our first gourmet destination this month. The former Italian seafood restaurant recently reopened as Chris’ Common Room under a new concept that offers a broader menu to accommodate meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Chris’ Common Room is the brainchild of owner Christopher Liu, drawing inspiration from his university days at Oxford spent in the Junior Common Room, relaxing and socialising with his college mates. The restaurant is bright, open and airy. Its décor is contemporary. The all-glass enclosure welcomes guests into a large dining room framed by a long bar and a semiopen kitchen. The high ceilings and warm colours exude a relaxed and friendly ambience, befitting the restaurant maxim of “Bringing good food and good people together”. The cooking philosophy of the restaurant supports the ethos – appetising, authentic southern Italian dishes that incorporate quality and seasonal ingredients from Italy, Japan, Asia and beyond. We started with Red Prawn & Avocado Tartare ($280). The tartare is nicely blended and seasoned with lemon olive oil. Burrata Cheese ($180) came next, one of our favourite appetisers. The cheese is soft, with just the right texture. The Seafood Bouillabaisse ($180) is an appetising, lighter version of the popular Marseille soup that mixes vegetables with a variety of fresh seafood including clams, squid, tiger prawns and red snapper fillet, seasoned with saffron.

The entrees were next. First came the restaurant’s signature dish – Red Prawn Spaghetti ($500), featuring fresh Sicilian red prawn in a tomato-based sauce. The red prawn is known for its large size, tender meat and its deep-shrimp flavour, and we eagerly savoured every morsel. Next was Braised Wagyu Beef Cheek ($300) in which the beef cheek is slow-cooked in red wine. The meat is tender and practically melts in the mouth, its flavour deepened by the glorious red wine sauce. Then came our highlight dish – Roast Whole Australian Free Range Chicken ($800), with pre-order required. The chicken is marinated with homemade sauce and roasted with garlic, rosemary thyme and butter to a golden-brown colour and served with potatoes. The dish is perfect to share with a large gathering. For dessert, we had Baked Apple Flan with Salted Caramel Gelato ($118), which nicely complemented our hearty meal. Chris’ Common Room offers a wide selection of Italian wines from different regions. We had Le Tunella Pinot Grigio Col Baje 2017 ($110 /glass), a fruity, refreshing white and a nice glass of Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico Riserva 2015 ($110/glass) for our meal. Chris’ Common Room is destined to become one of the more popular dining hotspots in town. The food is excellent, and the ambience is conducive to a hearty, happy meal. It’s also the perfect place to drop in for lunch, happy hour or dinner after a day of sightseeing along Hollywood Road and Sheung Wan. We highly recommend it.■

Sitting atop the newly built Emperor Hotel in Wanchai, close to the famous Happy Valley Racecourse, The Crown boldly expresses Hins’ vision of the ultimate entertainment lounge.
Next was served Caviar Noodles with Fish Beurre Blanc, a savoury broth with Shanghainese noodles, topped with sprinkles of salty egg yolk, dried caviar and white. Then came the Spanish Red Prawn with Deep-fried Bun and Mango Salsa in which deep-fried Chinese bun is paired with Spanish red prawn – another rare treat for us.
The Crown’s décor is opulent Art Deco: lush carpets, velvet couches and booths, gold and other rich colour accents, marble bar counter and a sunlike crown motif on the ceiling. A performance stage with a state-of-the-art sound system serves up live lounge music that showcases classic local and western songs by accomplished performers. The Crown also offers five private multipurpose rooms of varying sizes for more intimate gatherings. Guests are welcome to enjoy its spacious roof terrace which offers a 270-degree unimpeded view of the city, including the racecourse, the mountains behind and the glittering cityscape – it’s an awesome sight, especially at night. The Crown offers two sessions each evening: a dinner session from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and a midnight menu that stretches from 9.30pm till 2am. Guests may select either a 6- or 8-course Tasting Menu for the dinner session or choose à la carte after the performance starts. We opted for the 8-course Tasting Menu ($688/person); the 6-course Tasting Menu is priced at $588 per person. The meal started with four innovative appetisers: Foie Gras Tart – a foie gras bonbon served as a bite-size tart with mascarpone

The menu finishes with two desserts: Choya Kokuto Umeshu Bird’s Nest, in which the bird’s nest is infused with black plum wine; and Honeycomb with Vanilla Ice-cream, featuring vanilla ice-cream topped with French honeycomb. The Crown has an exclusive collection of fine wines, whiskies, cognacs and liqueurs and several innovative cocktails. We tried several cocktails including Pink Dahlia ($178), a white wine–based fragrant drink inspired by Hins’ bestselling album of the same name; Elixir ($178), a drink infused with sage in soda, and The Emperor ($178), a ginsenginfused cocktail that is also deemed to be healthy. Excellent food and drinks, relaxing music and splendid views in an opulent setting – a visit to The Crown is perfect for a special gathering with loved ones or friends. Do give it a try.■

Hairy Crab Feast 東海•海都「珍饌•大閘蟹」宴
It’s November, and that means the peak of the hairy crab season. Hairy crab, reared in freshwater lakes near Shanghai and Jiangsu, is a delicacy prized for its rich, golden roe. This month, The East Ocean Group, one of the top Chinese restaurant groups in the city, is offering a special hairy crab menu in its two flagship restaurants chains – Victoria City and East Ocean. We chose Victoria City Restaurant, one of the city’s best Cantonese restaurants, famous for its dim sum lunch and seafood, for our hairy crab meal. The crab, weighing 5 to 7 ounces, is traditionally steamed whole to preserve the freshness of the crab meat and roe. Other dishes use deshelled crab meat as their main ingredient. We chose the Hairy Crab Classic Feast, a 7-course meal priced at $428 per person. You can also choose a 9-course Hairy Crab Royal Feast ($1,888 for 4 persons). Our choice includes the delicious Steamed Pork Dumplings with Crab Meat and Roe (2 pieces) and Garlic Bread Topped with Crab Meat and Roe, which is crispy and tasty. An excellent soup follows – Double-boiled Chicken Soup with Conch and Dried Mushroom (served per person). Steamed Hairy Crab (2 pieces), the featured course, follows. Eating a hairy crab and getting the most out of it is an art; helpfully, the restaurant provides a cheat sheet. Eating each crab takes a bit of time but that’s the enjoyment. Two more dishes follow the crab – Poached Yam and Seasonal Vegetable in Broth and Homemade Udon in Hot and Sour Soup with Minced Pork before dessert which is Glutinous Rice Dumplings in Sweet Ginger Tea. A similar hairy crab meal is available at East Ocean Restaurant for $358 per person. Either one represents excellent value. Be sure to give this speciality a try while it’s still hairy crab season!

If you are in the mood for hearty authentic Bavarian food in a relaxed setting, then Brotzeit German Bier Bar and Restaurant is your choice. Brotzeit – German for ‘bread time’, that is, time to eat and drink – is located on Alfresco Lane on Tsim Sha Tsui East waterfront. With two floors and a large outdoor terrace, there is plenty of space, plus a gorgeous view of the harbour. Two large TV screens In the restaurant showing sports and happy hour in the early evening make it a great place to kick back and relax. We sampled a fair number of its signature dishes and beers. The Mozzarella Salad ($148) comes in a generous portion and the Cheese Spatzle ($168), a Bavarian speciality of homemade spatzle or noodles with assorted cheeses is real comfort food. The speciality, of course, is Schweinshaxe ($278) or oven-roasted pork knuckle, served with potato salad and sauerkraut. Note that Brotzeit uses only the hind shank imported from Germany, for even more tender and succulent taste. Brotzeit’s Sausage Platter ($258) includes spicy chicken sausages, Nurnberger Sausages, pork cheese sausages, Weisswurst and garlic pork sausages and is another firm favourite, as is the Grilled Mackerel ($268) in which a large mackerel fish is speared and grilled. We ended the meal with the Dessert Sampler ($168), which includes chocolate lava cake, apple strudel with vanilla ice cream and emperor’s pancake with plum sauce. Brotzeit’s extensive beer collection features a slate of imported Paulaner beers, all brewed to the standards of the German Purity Law of 1516. We tried Original Munchner Lager ($78/half litre), Dunkel Hefeweissbier ($80/half litre) – a nice wheat beer and Original Munchner
Dunkel Lager ($80/half litre), a dark beer. For light drinkers, the Stiegl Grapefruit ($65/bottle) is fruity and refreshing. November weather is perfect for sharing a down-to-earth meal in a relaxed outdoor setting somewhere like Brotzeit. Did you ever imagine you could be sitting in a Polynesian Tiki lounge sipping tropical cocktails in the middle of Hong Kong’s Central District? Well, surprise! – welcome to Honi Honi Tiki Lounge, the city’s first tiki bar. Honi Honi is a hidden gem as the bar is located on the third floor of a commercial building. Upon entry, we were wowed not only by the tiki culture décor, but also by its outdoor terrace fenced in with tropical plants and bamboo – a veritable tropical thicket amidst Hong Kong’s concrete jungle; and it was crowded. Honi Honi is the brainchild of owner Max Traverse, a veteran operator of high-end cocktail lounges, and managed by Mario Calderone. Both are committed to faithfully recreating classic tiki cocktails and concocting innovative new drinks. Its philosophy is to balance the five elements that make a good tiki drink: sweet (syrup and liqueurs), sour (citrus juices), strong (rum), weak (juices, soda) and spice (nutmeg, cinnamon, bitter, cloves). To do this, Honi Honi has arguably the city’s largest collection of rums that it mixes and matches to create just the right cocktail. We sampled the classics first. These included the iconic Zombie ($160) – created in 1934 – based on three types of rum, using the original secret recipe from the legendary Don the Beachcomber, and Mai Tai (1944), another classic made famous by Trader Vic’s. Some of Honi Honi’s own signature drinks we tried included Bikini Girl ($120), a lychee-flavoured libation and The Curse of the Monkey ($130), a coconut-based tequila cocktail. The Honi Honi Cocktail ($200), a potent drink made with seven different rums, is highly recommended. There are so many to choose from though. Honi Honi also offers a snack menu of chicken and prawn skewers, meatballs, mini quiches and veggie balls to fill the tummy. Between tasty munchies and refreshing cocktails in an enchanting tropical ambience, no wonder Honi Honi is one of the hot gathering spots in town. You don’t want to miss it.

Singleton Single Malt Whisky of Glen Ord 推出全新 Signature Sherry Cask 威士忌 Glen Ord, a noted distillery from the Scottish, recently launched its Singleton Sherry Cask edition amidst much fanfare. Held at the ballroom of the St. Regis Hong Kong, the glamorous event was attended by wellknown influencers and whisky aficionados and showcased gourmet presentation by Justin Quek, an internationally acclaimed chef from Singapore. Four additional Singleton vintages were sampled along with the 12-year Sherry Cask edition: Singleton 15, 18, 21 and 25 years old. The star of the launch was clearly the Singleton Cherry Cask Edition which is prepared using a triple cask maturation process that involves a fusion of American Oak Bourbon and European oak sherry cask after 12 years of maturation, followed by further maturation after blending with a selection of aging whiskies with the sherry cask whisky. The result: a whisky with rich, fruity notes and complex flavours.

Censers were popular in the Han dynasty. This goose-shaped censer is life-like. The back of the goose body is latticed, allowing smoke to rise from it. The censer is similar in function to the more well-known boshanlu-style censers from the Han period, but its form is very different. Incense was burned not just for the aroma, but also for practical reasons, such as acting as an insect repellent, and to purify the air. Combining aesthetics, practicality, and philosophy, censers are of high artistic and historical value. The Beauty of Ladies’ Ornaments from Asia and Europe 17 Sept 2019 – 27 Feb 2020 Liang Yi Museum is delighted to present Crowning Glory: The Beauty of Ladies’ Ornaments from Asia and Europe, a landmark exhibition exploring the role women’s clothing and accessories played in the social construction of gender and identity from the late imperial era in China and Japan to the early modern period. The heart of the exhibition sees a display of selected artefacts including wooden objects, textiles and hair ornaments, used and worn by traditional Chinese and Japanese women from the 17th to the 19th century. The last section of Crowning Glory features a selection of European vanities from the Museum’s permanent collection, with a particular focus on objects influenced by Chinoiserie and Japonism from the 1920s to 1930s.

Centre for Heritage and Arts The revitalised Central Police Station compound, the largest heritage project in Hong Kong, has opened its doors to the public as Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts. The CPS compound comprises 16 historic buildings, including three declared monuments (Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison), on a 13,600-square-metre site in the heart of Central. An international-grade art gallery and an auditorium have been added to contribute to the adaptive reuse of the site. The heritage site includes new art galleries and the Parade Ground and Prison Yard. The "Hall of the Cosmos" showcases the Universe from near to far, travelling from the solar system that we are living in, to the stars, Milky Way and galaxies further away and exploring the science and evolution of the universe all along the way.
