s chairman of Hong Kong Hotels Association, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Hong Kong and to CityLife, the monthly magazine for visitors to Asia’s World City. While the Covid Omicron variant outbreak continues in the city, its intensity, as measured by case infections, has slowed markedly. Still, for now, restrictive measures remain in force, including no dining-in after 6pm, very limited social gathering, and other measures. These measures are due to be relaxed this month, including the resumption of flights from banned countries, and, from 1 April, cutting the quarantine period for incoming visitors to 7 days. For now, the public transport system is operating normally, most shopping venues remain open, and all outdoor areas are free to visit. We count on the resilient Hong Kong people to make the most of a difficult situation. Outdoor activities are, for the most part, allowed, so we continue to feature various healthy outdoor options. Thankfully, Hong Kong’s diverse and plentiful outdoor areas provide rich alternatives for lovers of fresh air. One welcome aspect of our outdoors is that much of the city’s unique heritage is captured and preserved there. That is particularly true of our war relics, abandoned fortifications and gun emplacements on top of mountains or close to shore. Hong Kong’s rural heritage, old walled villages in remote areas in the New Territories also dot the city’s countryside. Thanks to the city’s extensive and wellmarked hiking trails, almost all these heritage assets are accessible and make for prime hiking destinations. Our cover story this month highlights some of the best heritage trails and destinations to visit and explore. Please go to Page 4 for more details. With travel highly restricted, we certainly understand if you’ve developed a serious case of wanderlust and an urge to see and explore places outside of Hong Kong. As a compromise, how about visiting places in Hong Kong that look like they belong somewhere else? We have identified a selection of cosy and expansive spots with an un-local vibe, whether it’s a quaint Japanese garden, a smooth white sandy beach, or a rustic Dutch-style windmill. Please check out photo-essay Unlikely Hong Kong on page 12 for more details. Dine-in restrictions notwithstanding, we continue to seek out new and interesting dining spots for your delectation. This month, we feature an upscale Indian restaurant; a popular café known for its comfort food and casual ambience; the latest addition to wellwellwell, a new dining destination in Pacific Place; and a Cantonese roast meat outlet for takeaway and dine-in, but with a fun and inventive twist. Please go to our dining section for reviews of these restaurants and more. As the city continues to cope with the pandemic, we appreciate your patronage of our hotels and their dining outlets, and please enjoy Hong Kong and all it has to offer.

Hong Kong Island 香港岛 PINEWOOD BATTERY HERITAGE TRAIL 松林炮台文物径

If you are into war relics, then Pinewood Battery, a WWII fortification that played a brief role in the Battle of Hong Kong is a must-see. Located in the heart of Lung Fu Shan Country Park at an elevation of 307 metres, this key defensive position overlooking the western entry to Victoria Harbour was built in 1905. It was converted into an anti-aircraft battery in 1930. The site was badly damaged by the Japanese army as it invaded in 1941. It fell into ruin after the war and was recognised as a conservation site in 2009. Ruins of the battery, magazine, command post and observation post are relatively well preserved.

An easy hike is to take the Peak Circle Walk, which starts near the Peak Tower, follow its continuation into Harlech Road, and then along the Lung Fu Shan Fitness Trail to Pinewood Battery. For a slightly more strenuous hike, you may want to start from Hong Kong University and find the entrance to the Lung Fu Shan Morning Trail via Hatton Road, and end your walk at the Peak.

TAI TAM WATERWORKS HERITAGE TRAIL 大潭水塘文物径

One of the most pleasant and scenic walks in this selection, this heritage trail showcases many of the prominent features of the Tai Tam Group of Reservoirs – the Tai Tam Reservoir, Tai Tam Byewash Reservoir, Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir and the Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir. It was one of Hong Kong's early water storage systems, begun in 1872, and continued to be developed until 1927. Many of its outstanding architectural landmarks and features are declared historic monuments, including several iconic masonry bridges, the dams themselves, pumping stations, valve houses and staff houses. The scenic walk alongside the reservoirs is hard to beat. Start from Hong Kong Parkview at the end of Wong Nei Chung Gap Road and walk down the Tai Tam Reservoir Road that ends at the Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir and Tai Tam Road. CAPE D’AGUILAR

鹤咀 Located on the south-easternmost corner of Hong Kong Island, Cape D’Aguilar has a bit of everything – rugged coastline, a marine reserve, sea caves, a whale skeleton, Hong Kong’s oldest lighthouse still in use, abandoned batteries, and spectacular views of South China Sea, and it’s easy enough of a hike to get there. Take First Bus number 9 from Shau Kei Wan and make sure it’s one that stops at Cape D’Aguilar Road, Upon disembarking, walk along the relatively flat road for about 2.5 kilometres until you reach a PCCW radar transmitting installation. Follow the path that skirts around it and goes down to the coast, taking you to either the marine reserve or the Cape D’Aguilar Lighthouse, both of which you should visit. Both Thunder Cave and the photogenic Crab Cave as well as the whalebone skeleton are located there. In addition to the lighthouse, it’s worth a detour to check out the two ruined batteries located right on the coastline.

Kowloon

DEVIL’S PEAK AND GOUGH BATTERY 魔鬼山与歌赋炮台

The jagged and sharp silhouette of Devil’s Peak features prominently as part of the skyline of eastern Kowloon. As part of the Wilson Trail and easy to get to, it is also a popular hiking destination. Devil’s Peak is also home to a couple of ruined batteries and a fort, or redoubt, that are fun to visit as well. Due to its location overlooking the narrow Lei Yue Mun strait, Devil’s Peak was a natural site to house gun batteries to guard the entrance to the harbour. Start your hike from Yau Tong MTR station and take Lei Yue Mun Road to the entrance road to the Chinese Cemetery. Follow the road uphill till you reach the entrance to Wilson Trail, on which you will find both Gough Battery and the redoubt on top of Devil’s Peak. Another defensive position, Pottinger Battery, lies under vegetation and is unreachable, but there is plenty to roam over and explore among the ruins. The top of the peak where the redoubt is located offers stunning views of Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and the harbour as well as Tseung Kwan O on the other side. You may retrace your steps or walk down to Lei Yue Mun village or hike further down to Black Hill and beyond on Wilson Trail.

New Territories & Outlying Islands 新界及离岛 PING SHAN HERITAGE TRAIL 屏山文物径

For a change of pace, how about a visit to old villages to get a feel for the rural way of life a couple of centuries back? The first of its kind, the Ping Shan Heritage Trail was designated in 1993 and passes through the villages of Hang Tau Tsuen, Hang Mei Tsuen, and Sheung Cheung Wai, all located in Yuen Long. This area was the stronghold of the Tang Clan, one of the five major clans in the New Territories who came here during the Song Dynasty, almost a thousand years ago. Numerous buildings and structures in these villages are included to visit as part of the Heritage Trail. They include a clan gallery which doubles as a visitors centre, various temples, study and ancestral halls, communal halls, an old well, shrines, pagodas and a walled village. Start from the Ping Shan Tang Clan Gallery cum Heritage Trail Visitors Centre which can be reached from Ping Shan Light Rail Stop, a 600-metre walk to the visitor’s centre. The end of the trails is close to the Tin Shu Wai MTR Station.

SHING MUN WAR RELICS TRAIL AND MACLEHOSE TRAIL SECTION 6

城门战地遗迹径及麦理浩径第 6 段 The Shing Mun War Relics Trail offers perhaps Hong Kong’s most fascinating collection of war relics. Located near the Shing Mun Reservoir, the trail is easily accessible, and visitors can finish with a hike along MacLehose Trail Section 6 for a fun day-excursion. The relics are what remains of Drinker’s Line, a mini-Maginot Line set up along Smuggler’s Ridge by the British to protect Kowloon and new Territories from the Japanese invading from the North in WWII. The war relics feature eight main attractions, including a long tunnel built into the mountains using London Street names such as Charing Cross and Regent Street, and a redoubt replete with pill boxes, an observation post and artillery points; the redoubt also served as the headquarters of Drinker’s Line defence. Start at entrance to Shing Mun Reservoir on Shing Mun Road. The Green Minibus 82 from Tsuen Wan Shiu Wo Street will drop you off at Shing Mun Road, followed by a kilometre walk. After your visit to the relics, you can continue with MacLehose Trail Section 6 which ends at Kowloon Reservoir and Tai Po Road.

LAI CHI WOO NATURE TRAIL

荔枝窝自然步道

There is so much to like about Lai Chi Wo, a remote Hakka village laid out in accordance with Chinese geomancy rules and in harmony with its surrounding ecosystem. Located on the shoreline in northeast New Territories in the Plover Cove Country Park near Sha Tau Kok, Lai Chi Wo is also part of the Hong Kong Global Geopark. The village was built over 100 years ago; its layout was designed by a feng shui master in accordance with geomancy to regain the village’s prosperity. The more than 200 houses are built along a gird of 3 by 9 rows. A dense feng shui wood behind the village with diverse tree species is home to mammals and butterflies. The mangrove and wetland house large mangrove trees, giant vines, dragonflies, frogs and freshwater fish. It’s a perfect demonstration of how the villagers live harmoniously with nature. You can get to Lai Chi Wo either by ferry from Ma Liu Shui on weekends and public holidays, or as a hike from Wu Kau Tong, accessible by Green Minibus 20R from Tai Po Market MTR Station. The hike takes about two hours, a pleasant walk traversing the Plover Cove Country Park.

TUNG O ANCIENT TRAIL 东澳古道

This 14-kilometre hike joins the modern to the ancient, a trail along the coast of west Lantau Island connecting the thriving satellite town of Tung Chung by Chek Lap Kok airport to the rustic village of Tai O. The coastal trail passes through several villages, and was once the main commuting route for villagers heading to fish and farm in North Lantau. Enjoy these sleepy and secluded villages, with vistas beyond, ranging from mountains, the airport, Hong Kong–Zhu Hai–Macau Bridge, mangroves, sleepy bays and the South China Sea. Start from Tung Chung MTR Station and follow signs to the starting point of the trail at Tung Chung Hau Wong Bridge. The trail is long but mostly flat. Be sure to give yourself time to explore Tai O, the popular destination known for its stilted houses, local seafood products and numerous restaurants. 這條 14 公里的遠足連接現代與古代，是一條沿着大嶼山西海岸的小徑，連接由赤鱲角機場前往繁榮的衛星城東涌和大澳鄉村。海岸小徑連接中間的幾個村莊，曾經是村民通勤的主要道路。沿途經過幽靜幽靜的村莊，群山、機場、港珠澳大橋、紅樹林、平靜的海灣和南中國海等美景盡收眼底。從東涌港鐵站出發，沿路牌指示前往東涌侯王橋的起點。這條路很長，但大部分都是平坦的。一定要留出時間去探索大澳，這里以其高蹺房屋、當地海鮮產品和眾多餐廳而聞名。

The discovery of this abandoned structure in late 2020 at Bishop Hill in Shek Kip Mei caused a sensation locally. A construction crew in the process of dismantling an abandoned underground reservoir built over 100 years to provide drinking water to the burgeoning population in Kowloon discovered a structure that comes straight out of early Roman architecture – ornate columns and arches and beautiful stone works. Luckily, the structure was in relatively good condition. Sensibly, the dismantling was quickly halted, and the place was declared a Grade 1 historical building for preservation, and is now accessible to visitors. Bishop Hill, Shek Kip Mei.

ince its opening in 2002, Bombay Dreams has set a notable benchmark for refined Indian cuisine in the city. To wit, the restaurant has been included in the Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand since 2009, a testimony to its sustained excellence. It recently moved to a location on Wyndham Street – a bright and spacious dining venue with a contemporary and refined décor. The outlet can seat 80 guests, including a private room for 12 persons.

tikka simmered in onion and tomato gravy comes highly recommended. Another excellent dish is Guchchi Matar ($158), morel mushroom slow cooked with green peas, onions, tomatoes and garlic. Biryani is a must; we chose Lucknowi Gosht Biryani ($188), in which the rice and meat are cooked separately with traditional herbs and spices and then layered. For our bread, we chose Garlic Naan ($35), our favourite.

The restaurant’s makeover extends to its menu selections. In collaboration with noted master chef Irshad Ahmed Quereshi from Lucknow, Bombay Dreams has redesigned its menu, including adding buffet and brunch menus. Chef Quereshi comes highly pedigreed as the seventh generation of royal chefs in Lucknow, capital of Utter Pradesh and known for its culinary culture. Royal chefs served the Mogul monarchs back in the 17th and 18th centuries, and their legacy was preserved through family recipes. For Bombay Dreams, Chef Quereshi has created a diverse collection of regional dishes from across India to augment his specialty Northern Indian and Lucknowi favourites.

We wrapped up our meal with desserts: JamunE-Gul ($88), condensed milk balls immersed in a light cardamom-flavoured sugar syrup; Kulfi ($88), Indian ice cream made of thickened milk and served with sweetened vermicelli with choice of Malai/Saffron/Mango/ Pomegranate flavours; and Moong Dal Halwa ($88), split green gram cooked with sugar, clarified butter and flavoured with cardamom – all fit for purpose.

We began our meal with starters: Bombay Chilgoza Prawns ($168), fresh prawns marinated with ginger, garlic, coriander and pine nuts, deep fried, and Tawa Masala Sea Bass ($168) - sea bass in a marinade of spices, fresh herbs. We like the flavour and aroma of the herbs in both dishes.

Bombay Dreams has also upgraded its alcohol collection, including a new line of specialty cocktails and wines, and a whisky collection from Scotland, Ireland, Japan, India and beyond. We enthusiastically sampled a few which include Tadkaa Gin ($88), coconut, Campari, aromatic bitters, curry leaves, NH-8 ($98), Tequila Reposado, creme de cassis, lime, ginger beer; Kingfisher beer ($78); and two Indian whiskies – Amrut Fusion Single Malt Whisky 50% ($128) from Bangalore ($128), and Paul John Single Malt Whisky 46% Edited ($118) from Goa.

We ordered several mains to share. Tandoori is one of our favourites, so we ordered Chef’s Platter NonVegetarian ($268). The platter includes tandoori nisha, fish tikka, murgh kikka Peshwari, tandoori chicken, boti kebab and raunaq-e-seekh. All the meats are tender and tasty – a real treat. e are familiar with Classified, a popular caféstyle restaurant serving modern comfort food, freshly brewed coffee, well curated beers and wines, all delivered in a casual setting. It is also one of our favourite watering holes for after-work gatherings, and just a good all-round place to get a filling and tasty meal. Since the opening of its first outlet in 2006, Classified Group has expanded steadily to eight locations across the city. We thought it time to revisit this gem. We went to the branch in Sheung Wan on Hollywood Road, nearby the famous Man Mo Temple. The restaurant occupies two levels. An al fresco portico fronting the street provides comfortable seating for drinks and snacks during happy hours and beyond. The ground floor has an open frontage, and a larger dining space upstairs offers a relaxing indoor space.

Kale Salad 羽衣甘藍藜麥沙拉

As is our wont, we ordered a bunch of plates to share. First was Kale Salad – kale, quinoa, red apple, dried cranberries, walnuts, halloumi, lemon olive oil dressing ($108), which is healthy and nutritious. Then came one of our comfort food favourites – the Classified Breakfast - choice of eggs, pork sausage, bacon, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, baked beans, sourdough ($138) – the tried-and-true English-style full breakfast that is good any hour of the day. Other mains we ordered are Linguine Alle Vongole, clams, linguini, white wine, coriander, parsley, chilli ($168) and L’Entrecote Frites - grassfed ribeye steak, cheese mashed potatoes, rocket,

cherry tomatoes, signature sauce ($258). For sides, we opted for French Fries, Truffle Oil & Cheese ($60) and Chicken Wings ($68) with a choice of Thai chilli sauce or garlic parmesan. In the dessert department, we were unable to overlook the Tiramisu - ladies fingers, coffee, mascarpone, chocolate ($68) and one of Classified’s specialties and another favourite – the Artisanal Cheese Platter, in which quality cheese types ranging from soft to hard and mild to strong of cheese made from sheep, goat and cow milk are curated. The platter ($270 – five types of cheese) is for dine-in only. But a similar cheese box is available for takeaway or delivery. The cheeses are served with crostini and quince jelly and come in three sizes ($180 for three types of cheese; $270 for five, and $360 for seven). The cheeses include Comte 12 mois Reserve Du Chamet, a fruity yet buttery hard cheese, Croyitins De Chavignol AOC goat cheese, and the creamy and pungent Bleu d’Auvergne. You can order them through delivery services or Classified’s own online order form. The drinks are good too: we had a nice bottle of Errazuriz Estate 2019 Reserva Merlot Chile ($298), Watermelon Mojito - cold-pressed watermelon, juice, lime, soda water ($48), and Sangria - a choice of white or red wine with orange juice, seasonal fruits ($68). Our visit to Classified was a fun and filling occasion – hearty food, nice drinks, and a relaxed ambience. It is a winning formula and we think you’ll like it too. Give it a visit.■

Teahouse/Barhouse——wellwellwell ($$$)

wellwellwell, the latest dining destination at the Pacific Place mall, recently opened its second well – the City Well, with a theme of “café by day, bar by night”. During the day, Teahouse aims to capture the essence of Hong Kong dining, a unique food culture of East meet West, by reinventing classic and popular cha chaan teng and dim sum dishes. In the evening, Barhouse comes to life, serving intriguing cocktails from Chinese liquors and a wide selection of tapas-style bar snacks and street-style skewers. We were there to enjoy a lunch at the Teahouse. True to its theme, the dishes on the menu looked familiar yet different. We started with Green Garden Salad ($25). This is followed by an item with an interesting twist – Sichuan Mapo Bolognese Spaghetti ($158), a pasta in a Sichuan spicy mapo sauce. The pasta is quite delicious and we like the inventive mix. In the same vein, Lap Cheong Carbonara ($188), which is sliced Chinese sausage in meat sauce and spaghetti, is also tasty. Another fusion dish is Signature Iberico Chau Siu Rice with Fried Egg ($188), comprising barbecued pork served with broccolini and a sunnyside-up egg (choice of steamed rice or cauliflower rice). The use of Iberico pork as char siu has gained popularity; this one certainly holds its own.

For a different fusion flavour, the Baked Black Cod Rice ($248) infused with black garlic and served with grilled vegetables and a sweet kabayaki sauce and infusion of soy sauce and mirin sauce, deftly combines Japanese and Cantonese cooking styles. Both dim sums we sampled, Hokkaido Scallop atop Siu Mai ($88) and Har Gao ($88) – steamed shrimp dumpling, are tasty. The dessert, Teahouse’s Egg Waffles, is also a special treat. The one we chose, Salted Egg Yolk ($68) – served with ice cream and caramelised black sesame dip, is street-food style egg waffle and ice-cream at its best! If you are in the mood for local food, but want an inventive and different touch, you should visit Teahouse at wellwellwell. Give it a try, day, or night!

Good BBQ 好燒味 ($) We are a fan of Sandy Keung, the banker-turned-restaurateur of Table, the acclaimed restaurant in Sheung Wan. So, when we learned that she had opened another dining concept, named Good BBQ, we were eager to try it for ourselves. Simply put, Good BBQ serves up quality traditional Cantonese roast meat and rice dishes at reasonable prices, and with a twist. Good BBQ offers food for takeaway at outlets in prime shopping malls such as ifc mall and Pacific Place. It also has one dine-in facility, at the Quayside office complex in Kwun Tong. The Kwun Tong outlet is in the spacious lobby of the office tower, which provides plenty of comfortable seating for dine-in customers. For our meal, we began with the classic Combination Rice Box with Choice of Two Meats. Starting from $54, the choices include char siu, crispy pork belly (+$8), smoked pig’s knuckle +$4, roast duck (thigh+ $12, boneless +$10, breast +$8), plus soy chicken and poached chicken. We chose char siu, crispy pork belly, roast duck and smoked pig’s knuckle. The meats are juicy, tender, savoury and fresh. Other dishes we tried included Szechuan Pepper Chicken ($58 à la carte, $78 chicken rice + side + soup, $68 with rice) and Egg Bolognese Meat Sauce, Smoked Pork Trotter, Japanese Onsen Egg, Kimchi, Pickles with Rice ($58). For the health conscious who want to minimise carb intake, Good BBQ has designed a Burn Fat Meal ($88), which is skinless chicken breast + 2 onsen eggs, +150g broccoli +20g kimchi + 100g rice (total: protein 75g, fat 27g, carbs 27g, 665 Calories). Good BBQ serves teas from various countries at $20/cup. We ordered The Des Lords Black Tea, Bergamot, Saffron. Other teas such as Chinese Pu Erh, Longjing Tea, and Russian Black Tea are also available. Better yet, these teas are also available for takeaway, at $198 per box of 10 tea bags. Good BBQ also sells a Hong Kong BBQ Cooking Kit which is BBQ sauce nicely packaged in a bag ($15 per bag or $135 per box of 10). The outlet even offers cute piggy souvenirs for $18.

THE BIRTH OF COLONIAL HOTELS 殖民地酒店的誕生

ong Kong Island’s first hotel opened in 1841, the year the British took control of the island. It was called Lane's Hotel. The doyen of the Lane family was Edward Lane, butler to the East India Company in Canton (Guangzhou). He seems to have had a lot of relatives. The hotel's proprietor was probably William Lane who ran a ship-dealing operation in Queen's Road, Central, and was involved in the hotel business for many years. ln 1842 he bought Lap Tap's Tavern which he renamed the Victoria Hotel. William was also connected to Thomas Lane, the partner of Ninian Crawford. ln 1850 they founded that great Hong Kong department store, Lane Crawford and Company, which still flourishes today. Reporting on the amazing progress of Hong Kong during its early years, Captain Hall, the commander of the famous Opium War gunboat the Nemesis, noted that: "billiard tables, for instance, were in the colony less than two years after it became British territory and the hotels were said to be quite up to date and comfortable." The names of these Victorian hostelries changed frequently. A popular hotel in Hollywood Road called Connaught House originally got its name from a posh London hotel. Later, to attract

American customers, it was renamed Astor House after a celebrated New York hostelry. It ended up as the St. Francis Hotel. ln the early days of the industry the words "house", "inn", "tavern" or even "grill room" were often used in preference to "hotel." English pub names like the Crown and Anchor and the White Swan were popular. More creative monikers included Uncle Tom's Cabin and The Land We Live ln. Some were respectable establishments and some were not. I have my suspicions in regard to the Beehive Inn which had a sign outside that read:

Within this hive, we're all alive, and pleasant is our honey, If you are dry, step in and try, we sells for ready money. Another somewhat dubious hostelry was Dick Daly's Owl Grill Rooms in Des Voeux Road which had a few "unpretentious rooms" available. It was "the haunt of the hungry and adventurous," wrote an old China hand, "cravings being satisfied by tremendous steaks and strange females who on occasion were so solicitous of one's health as to persist in drinking to it at one's own expense."

在連氏家族屬老一輩的愛德華．連是廣東印度公司的總管。連氏的老闆是威廉．連，他經營酒店事業多年，並在中環皇后大道擁有一間船運公司。一八四二年，威廉買下立德酒店，並重新將之命名為維多利亞酒店。威廉跟托瑪士連也有關係，後者是尼安．卡佛的合伙人。一八五零年二人一起創辦了香港的大型百貨公司連卡佛。時至今日，連卡佛的業務依然非常蓬勃。甲頓 · 荷是鴉片戰爭砲艇復仇號的指揮宮。他指出，香港早期發展速度驚人：「當時大家都認為香港的殖民地酒店是新潮和舒適的。譬如說，香港成為英國殖民地不到兩年，桌球檯便在酒店出現了。」維多利亞時代的酒店經常更換名稱。荷里活道一家頗受歡迎的酒店——「康樂飯店」，原名來白倫敦的一間豪華酒店。後來為了要吸引美國遊客，酒店的名稱跟紐約一家著名酒店一樣，名為「阿斯特飯店」。經過多次改易，酒店最後命名為「聖法蘭西斯酒店」。酒店業發展初期，「飯店」、「旅館」、「旅店」以至「扒房」等詞彙多被選用，「皇冠」、「安格」和「白天鵝」等英式酒吧名稱則多被選用作酒店名稱。富有創意的酒店名稱有「湯姆叔叔的小木屋」和「我們住在這裡」

The original Hongkong Hotel was located on Queen's Road, Central where The Landmark shopping mall is today. It was rebuilt to an international standard in 1892 and was managed by Dorabjee Naorojee, the Parsee entrepreneur who founded the Star Ferry Company. He and his partners also operated the Peak Hotel next to the Upper Peak Tram Station, which boasted spectacular views. Its rival, the Mount Austin Hotel, which was located higher up the mountain, was a failure due to being frequently shrouded in cloud. It was later taken over by the military and turned into a barracks. There were several residential and private hotels. They ranged from cheap boarding houses and dismal doss-houses to the magnificent Kingsclere Hotel in Mid-Levels. There was even a floating hotel called The Marina, which in spite of a splendid opening party, failed to attract guests and went bankrupt. The vessel was sold and ended up as a 'flower boat' (a floating brothel) in Canton. Hong Kong's most famous old hotel, The Peninsula, did not open for business until 1928, during the reign of Queen Victoria's grandson, King George V. The vision of its founders, the eminent Kadoorie family, was always for it to be the “finest hotel east of Suez” and it was grandly placed at the terminus of the Kowloon and Canton Railway, the final stage of the trans-Siberian route. Today, it remains a great hotel, with a sweeping view across Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island, even if the railway now passes underground.■

Censers were popular in the Han dynasty. This goose-shaped censer is life-like. The back of the goose body is latticed, allowing smoke to rise from it. The censer is similar in function to the more well-known boshanlu-style censers from the Han period, but its form is very different. Incense was burned not just for the aroma, but also for practical reasons, such as acting as an insect repellent, and to purify the air. Combining aesthetics, practicality, and philosophy, censers are of high artistic and historical value. ‘Yue Minjun Solo Exhibition – Smile at the Flower Sermon’ at Tang Contemporary Art Until - 30 April Glimpses into grand historical events appear vividly on the canvases as cheeky grins or allegorical laughter. Yue’s ability to handle difficulties with grace is readily apparent. The intense visual impact of his smiling figures distinctly conveys Yue’s questioning attitude. Change is the only constant, and this series began with paintings of symbols from Chinese socialist propaganda - paintings and pieces that satirically appropriated classic works of art, then shifted toward the unchecked aesthetic imagery before transitioning to the dreamy scenes shown in this exhibition. Ibrahim Mahama: Half of a Yellow Sun at White Cube 8 April - 14 May Titled after Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel focusing on the Nigerian-Biafran War in the late 1960s, the individual paintings are inspired by the 1970s songs of Fela Kuti, the PanAfricanist musician and political activist. For Mahama, this period of independence from colonial British rule across Africa has long been a source of inspiration. ‘Clement Chan: Jazz Improvisation through Abstract Shanshui’ at Art of Nature Contemporary Gallery 7 Apr – 16 May The returnee artist Clement Chan studied in the United States and Italy, where he obtained a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in fine arts. His art is influenced by Cubism, American Abstract Expressionism and Neo-expressionism. Besides painting, Chan has also been involved in calligraphy, music, modern poetry and philosophy for years. The influence could be traced by the elements from his paintings – unbridled calligraphic brushstrokes, undulating rhythm in music, and perceptual abstraction in poetry. They reflect the artist’s inner sophistication and demonstrate the aesthetic realm beyond image and substance. Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware 茶具文物館

Originally the home of the commander-in-chief of the British forces, the museum houses a huge collection of tea ware in Hong Kong's oldest surviving colonial building. It contains the KS Lo Gallery with its permanent exhibition of rare ceramics and seals from the Song and Ming dynasties. Weekdays (closed on Tuesdays except public holidays) 10am-6pm, Free. Tai Kwun

Centre for Heritage and Arts The revitalised Central Police Station compound, the largest heritage project in Hong Kong, has opened its doors to the public as Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts. The CPS compound comprises 16 historic buildings, including three declared monuments (Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison), on a 13,600-square-metre site in the heart of Central. An international-grade art gallery and an auditorium have been added to contribute to the adaptive reuse of the site. The heritage site includes new art galleries and the Parade Ground and Prison Yard. Hong Kong Space Museum

Hall of the Cosmos and Space Exploration Covering a total area of 1,600 square metres, the "Hall of the Cosmos" and "Hall of Space Exploration" house a hundred new exhibits, of which about 70 percent are interactive. With the aid of interesting hands-on exhibits and advanced equipment coupled with lighting effects and environmental decorations, the exhibition vividly introduces astronomy and space science. The "Hall of the Cosmos" showcases the Universe from near to far, travelling from the solar system that we are living in, to the stars, Milky Way and galaxies further away and exploring the science and evolution of the universe all along the way. Conducting Robust Sampling of Antibody Testing – An Urgently Needed Covid Measure for Hong Kong A

antibody testing program of a sample of the city’s population should be the government’s next measure to manage the Covid-19 epidemic.

s the government continues to ponder the next moves to manage the Covid-19 epidemic, one key statistic remains elusive to confirm, and that is the total number of people that have already been infected since the Omicron wave began in early January 2022. Several points need to be made about this specific datum: In almost every country, the total number of actual infected cases is officially unknown, since there are always a significant number of asymptomatic and mild symptomatic cases that are not reported. There are statistical ways to estimate that number, although few countries have conducted a statistically sound and comprehensive estimation to arrive at it. In the case of Hong Kong, it is widely accepted that the officially reported 1.2 million cases is a significant underestimate, for reasons that include the intensity of the outbreak – how quickly it has spread, the reluctance by many to report their cases in the early stage for fear of being quarantined, and asymptomatic cases. Estimates have been made as to the total infected cases, with some authoritatively modelling in excess of half the population, but these tend not to contain enough detail to allow specific actions to be developed. We would argue that a deeper and more accurate understanding of how many people have already been infected by Covid is critical for the government to decide what to do next. If the total number of unreported cases is indeed as high as estimated, with more than 50% of Hong Kong people already been infected, then together with an 80%-plus vaccination rate in its population, Hong Kong is rapidly approaching ‘herd immunity’. And given the strong natural immunity offered by prior infection, having a more precise estimate of infected cases plus their demographic characteristics can help the government pinpoint measures toward the highest levels of both unvaccinated and uninfected people – information that would be extremely helpful for the government to guide effective action.

There is a relatively simple way to develop a robust approximation of Hong Kong’s Covid status, something that citywide PCR testing doesn’t do. The solution is to conduct statistically robust antibody testing, not on the whole city population, but on a sample of Hong Kong residents. The test does not need to be compulsory and can be done relatively quickly, say within one week. An antibody test measures the level of antibody protection specific to a virus that a person has acquired from either vaccination or an earlier infection. A wellthought-out antibody testing programme might look something like the following: The test will be voluntary and, more importantly, anonymised. The government will promise not to use the data for anything other than meta-statistical analysis. This will help encourage participation from wide sectors of the population and not stigmatize those that were infected but chose not to report. Relevant analytical data will be collected from each volunteer along with the antibody result. This would include: age, gender, vaccination status (type, one, two or three jabs and dates of vaccination), self-declared co-morbidities, self-identified Covid status (whether infected, and if so, when and how severe), addresses of residence and work, income level, and nature of work or school. The data collected will allow for extensive and refined analysis of how pervasive the Covid virus has been and how it has affected various demographics.

Incentives could be offered to encourage participation, either monetary (say $100) or differentiated, to encourage representative sampling. For example: Disney tickets for kids and health checks for the elderly. As a bonus, the testing can offer the option of a free PCR test, which will also yield important data, and with much less intrusion to all Hong Kong people. Individuals’ infection status could be optionally revealed to them, as could any PCR test result, including antibody level (i.e., how much immunity still in the body), but again, with no obligation on the individual. The government would set up antibody testing centres in each neighbourhood to ensure robust and representative sampling across the city. The testing programme can be ongoing, and statistical sampling would be drawn regularly from the database for analysis. A large enough sample – a few tens of thousands – adjusted for demographics, should yield a statistically robust and accurate assessment of the city’s Covid situation on which to base further action. To encourage participation, the government should be transparent in its communication, appeal to residents’ altruism in helping compile a complete and accurate assessment of the situation and offer the carrot of lessened restrictions on society through the better information generated. In business, war or an epidemic, having a complete assessment of the situation is always key to finding an optimal solution. By conducting representative antibody testing and so knowing the situation on the ground, the benefits would include: Accuracy – although antibody levels wane over time, since almost all infections have occurred since January, reported antibody levels of those affected will likely remain high for the next few months. It will yield a treasure trove of data that the government can use to target its Covid efforts much more effectively and efficiently. Antibody testing is much easier, cheaper, and faster to implement than citywide PCR testing; anonymising it offers added privacy. A sampling exercise involves fewer people than citywide testing, making it is feasible to ask volunteers to provide a rich set of demographic data that is invaluable for policy analysis and formulation.

How might different results affect how we deal with Covid? Let’s consider two cases: total infected cases of 3.5 million people or 1.5 million (including the 1.2 million reported cases). In the former case, there may be significantly few unvaccinated, uninfected people left, and we would have a very good idea of their demographics (age, sex, occupation, and even place of work). Then, any measures can be focused and efficient, and group-specific. On the other hand, if the total who have been infected is only1.5 million people, and unless it is demographically skewed, specific city-wide measures may be preferable. Concerns have been expressed regarding the validity, usefulness and accuracy of a covid-antibody test. Keep in mind an antibody test is not meant as diagnostic tool to help determine whether somebody is currently infected or not. It is also true that a person’s antibody level may not be detected until one to three weeks after becoming infected. There is also a concern with accuracy. These issues should be manageable for the purpose of sampling. The latest rapid antibody test achieves 98% accuracy which is plenty enough for this exercise. And as new infection cases have steadied, it is reasonably easy to approximate those that have been infected but have not registered their antibody level yet. In summary, the extremely high intensity of Covid outbreak has strained the city’s health care system. But not having a full assessment of the situation has also severely hampered the city’s response measures. Conducting voluntary antibody testing allows the government to quickly acquire the necessary information to help put forth measures that are timely and effective. Since antibody level does wane in a person, there is a short window to do it effectively, and the time to do it is now. ■

The testing can be repeated regularly at relatively low cost. The sample size can be reduced once a wellfunctioning database is established.
