e welcome you to Hong Kong and to CityLife, the monthly magazine for visitors to Asia’s World City. The arrival of September marks the onset of Autumn, with a welcome easing of temperatures and humidity, though non-Hongkongers may still find it more than balmy. Certainly, the city’s enthusiastic celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which usually falls in the month, is key marker of the turn of the seasons. This ancient festival, by which rural China has given thanks for autumn harvests over the centuries, is now an important holiday in Chinese communities across the world, including Hong Kong. Be sure to watch the world-famous Tai Hang Fire Dragon, check out a lantern festival, and above all, enjoy a mooncake during this festive holiday. Please go to page 8 for details. You may know that Hong Kong is one of the favourite destinations for millennial travellers, especially from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and South East Asian countries. As a dynamic global city with a vibrant East-West culture, a world-renowned and diverse food culture, stunning skylines and cityscapes, Hong Kong is perfect for the inquisitive and independent millennial in search of that genuine, local experience that can be shared on social media. Please check out our feature story on page 16 for a bucket list of must-do items for millennials, or anyone else. September also opens the new horse racing season. Hong Kong’s passion for the sport is world renowned, and a race-day visit is an experience for any visitor in search of unique Hong Kong culture. The horse races are normally held twice a week, alternating between the Happy Valley and Sha Tin Racecourses, with the Opening Race Day on 1 September. Check it out. The 38th edition of the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair is held this month. Over 20,000 buyers from all over the world visited the fair last year, with more than 800 exhibitors showing a scintillating array of watches and clocks. It’s a must-visit for passionate watch lovers. September is also a month full of concerts, plays and music festivals in the city. Options range from the Hong Kong Phil, a Japanese rock band, British and American pop groups, to a jazz festival. Check them all out in our Calendar and Happenings Section beginning on page 4. As the weather turns milder, September is always a great month to visit the city. Whether it’s celebrating a joy-filled festival, checking out trendy spots, watching the races, or attending one of the many concerts and performances going on, we hope you’ll have loads of fun visiting Hong Kong.

In our season opening, Maestro Jaap van Zweden prefaces two of the most popular Russian works of the early 20th century with one of Wagner’s dazzling orchestral showpieces. The winner of the 2015 Chopin Piano Prize, Seong-Jin Cho, whose playing has been described as “heart-melting” by Gramophone magazine, performs what is probably the most emotionally wrenching of all piano concertos.

The 1975 Live in Hong Kong
Big Winners at 2019 Brit Awards with “Best British Group” and “Album of the Year”, The 1975 return to Hong Kong this September for a single performance at AsiaWorld. The Manchester indie/alternative outfit, consisting of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Matthew ‘Matty’ Healy, lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald and drummer George Daniel, have made huge waves since their debut concert here in 2014 and fans can look forward to hearing a selection of the band’s hits and new material.

HKTDC: Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair
The HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and the concurrent Salon de TE gather over 840 exhibitors from 23 countries and regions this year, including the first-time participation of Qatar. In 2018, the events welcomed more than 21,000 buyers from all over the world, reinforcing Hong Kong’s role as the trade hub of timepieces.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club: National Day Race Meeting
Try your luck at the races on National Day and be part of a uniquely Hong Kong experience! The race meeting at the Sha Tin Racecourse celebrates National Day with thrilling races and entertainment, on-course activities, plus a new range of souvenir merchandise on offer. Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance
A highlight of city-wide Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, the fire dragon dance traces its roots back to the 19th century when villagers across Hong Kong warded off disease and evil spirits with the help of the dancing fire dragon. The best-known rendition of this revered tradition and unique cultural icon is the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, which features three hundred performers operating the 67-metre-long dragon in a series of carefully choreographed movements, creating a stunning visual effect that burns more than 70,000 incense sticks over a three-day period. The event has been inscribed on China’s third national list of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and was recently selected as one of the Remarkable Examples of Good Practice for Safeguarding the National ICH Items. Taking place from 12 to 14 September in Tai Hang, Causeway Bay (best vantage point – Wun Sha Street), the performance will also be held from 10.45pm to 11.30pm in nearby Victoria Park on 13 September. Be sure to join the crowd and dance with the dragon to celebrate this beloved tradition.
大坑舞火龍
每年中秋節期間，香港都會上演有逾140年曆史的傳統習俗—— 舞火龍。舞火 龍源於19世紀，當時的居民為求消除瘟疫而起，如今成了香港獨特的風俗。屆 時共有近300人舞動長達67米、插滿線香的火龍，在街道上穿梭，演繹各種姿 態，三天共用上7萬多支線香。 大坑舞火龍被列為第三批國家級非物質文化遺產，以及「國家級非遺代表性 項目優秀保護實踐案例」。今年的活動將於9月12日至14日晚上在銅鑼灣大坑 舉行，最佳觀賞地點是浣紗街。另外，於9月13日晚上約10:45至11:30，鄰近 的維多利亞公園亦會舉行舞火龍活動。一起來與火龍共舞，感受百年傳統文化！

The Mid-Autumn Festival - Mooncakes Galore 中秋節，共享月餅盛宴！
When it turned a gift-giving tradition into a business practice, Hong Kong ushered in a whole new era of the mooncake during the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. 正值中秋佳節之際，香港將生產月餅的藝術商業化，開創了月餅 的新紀元。 The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important Chinese holidays, traces its roots to a time when farmers rejoiced in bountiful harvests. Traditionally, the festival celebrates three revered customs: gathering – of family and friends, often gazing at the full moon; thanksgiving – to local deities; and praying – wishing for longevity and good fortune. Today, Chinese communities across the world celebrate the festival, which falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar – a full moon, by the lighting and display of colourful lanterns, moon-gazing and eating mooncakes. And Hong Kong is no exception; the city hosts several lantern festivals with the largest and most popular in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. The Tai Hang Dragon Dance is world renowned and attracts thousands of spectators.

Above all, though, Hong Kong has elevated the making and giving of mooncakes to an art form and an integral part of the city’s business practice. Millions of mooncakes are purchased each year, most of them as gifts wrapped in ever-fancier boxes. Hong Kong’s trams are a rock-steady part of the cityscape, but had to overcome early resistance, writes Arthur Hacker 香港電車不斷發展，在香港城市景貌中的地位穩如磐石。 Arthur Hacker 報導

or more than a hundred years, trams have rattled through the streets of Hong Kong Island, carrying millions of passengers annually. The original route was between Arsenal Street, in Wan Chai, and Causeway Bay. The first woman to drive a tram was a Mrs Jones – the wife of the then Director of Public Works. She was given the honour of driving at the tramway’s opening ceremony in 1904. Persuading the Chinese population to use the new service was then a very real problem. Railways were regarded as an abomination in Qing dynasty China, where there was a powerful anti-railway lobby, which despised all forms of rail transport. Hong Kong Tramways Company’s strategy was to show how easy it was to drive a tram and to demonstrate how safe they were. If Mrs Jones, a mere woman (political correctness was not yet heard of), could be trusted to drive one of these monstrous machines, filled with celebrities, then it surely must be safe. Nobody criticised Mrs. Jones' impeccable driving, but, unfortunately, she brought her odious little son along for the ride. He gained possession of the bell, which he rang

throughout the journey, much to the irritation of the invited guests. It was no surprise that the public relations ploy failed as transportation was not heavily in demand. Other traffic on the road at the time was mainly rickshaws, sedan chairs and the occasional horse-drawn carriage. It was three years before Dr Joseph Noble, an American dentist, introduced the first motor car to the streets of Hong Kong, seven years before the opening of the Kowloon Canton Railway. The Hong Kong Chinese took some time to get used to tram travel and it was not until 1913 that the shareholders of the tramway company were paid a dividend. However, in 1914 the trams carried nine million passengers.

The original trams were single-deckers, with a first-class fare of 20 cents. ln 1912 doubledeckers were introduced. They were originally open to the elements, but canvas roofs were soon added, followed by totally enclosed roofs.

operate along the same route as the trams. The new mode impacted the tramway somewhat, with annual trip numbers dropping from 31 million to 27 million. The company reacted by reducing its fares dramatically – to six cents for first class and three cents for second class. It took only a year for passenger numbers to recover. By the time of the Japanese invasion, Hongkongers were taking 72 million trips annually and the fleet had expanded to 109 cars. The trams ceased running in 1944, during the occupation, and when liberation came the following year, only 15 were still serviceable. But a year later, trams were back to pre-war numbers. The next real threat came with the opening of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in 1979 – but Hongkongers’ love of the trams is well entrenched and this turned out not to be a crisis for the ‘ding ding’. Hong Kong Island now boasts 164 vehicles, the largest fleet of doubledecker trams in the world. It takes 80 minutes to make the 13-kilometre ride between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan. Occasional suggestions that a world-class city such as Hong Kong should get rid of this old-fashioned mode of transport are always met with a robust public rejection. The tram is beloved by residents and visitors alike, seen by all as a convenient, friendly transport that harkens back to a bygone era. Today, the tram system carries about 200,000 people daily. Cheap, safe and pollutionfree, the vehicles offer a brief respite from the hectic pace of life that prevails here. Plus, at HK$2.60 a ride, they are a fantastic bargain and there is nothing that the good citizens of Hong Kong love more than a bargain.■

he 2019 Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon returns to the city for its fifth edition more popular than ever. This day-long cycling fest, held on 13 October on the waterfront of Tsim Sha Tsui and beyond, combines the opportunity for cycling enthusiasts of all ages to ride through the streets and iconic landmarks of Hong Kong with the spectacle of action-packed racing from the world’s top professional cyclists. In all, thousands of amateur riders, young and old, along with hundreds of professional cyclists take part in various competitive races and leisurely rides, cheered on by excited crowds along the way.

This year’s Cyclothon has four races and five cycling events. The popular 30km and 50km rides will anchor the morning’s activities as riders speed along some of Hong Kong’s most stunning landmarks including iconic bridges and tunnels, with the famed Victoria Harbour as the backdrop. A crowd of riders with imagination and creative flair will also adorn themselves in eye-catching costumes and take part in the newly introduced Fancy Dress Bike Party, while the Family Fun Ride, as well as the CEO Charity and Celebrity Ride, will see participants pedal gently through the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui in a display of community spirit and fun. Other races include the Elite Partners Men’s Open Race, followed by the Women’s Open Race and finishing with Hammer Hong Kong, the day’s main event presented by Sun Hung Kai Properties, to take place on the 3.8-kilometre closed circuit that stretches from Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui to nearby Hung Hom. This year, Hong Kong serves as the final stop of the Hammer Series, as a strong line-up of UCI WorldTour Teams, Pro Continental Teams and the Hong Kong National Team compete for the event title as well as the overall championship of the season-long series. To add to the experience, a spectator stand along the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade offers visitors a premium view of the action-packed races. Between good-spirited rides and intense, pulsating competition, the 2019 Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon promises to be a fantastic event for riders and spectators alike. The Hammer Series, which began in Europe in 2017, adopts an innovative team-vs-team race format that showcases the best of professional cycling. It’s fast, tactical and very hard. Hammer Hong Kong, sanctioned as UCI Asia Tour Class 1.1, will feature two disciplines. First up is the Hammer Sprint, which takes place on a 3.8 km circuit covered 11 times. There are points up for grabs every time the riders cross the finishing line, guaranteeing furious sprints and great entertainment for the fans watching. The final race is the Hammer Chase, a team time trial pursuit over five laps. Here, each team starts at a fixed interval according to their position on the leaderboard after the Hammer Sprint. Two groups will be competing: the Runners-Up Group, which will go first, and then the Finalist Group from which the first team to finish will be crowned Hammer Hong Kong Champions. ova has long been one of our favourite places to go whenever we crave Italian food. Launched in Hong Kong more than 25 years ago, Cova, whose history goes back to 1817 when the first Cova Patisserie opened in Milan, is a fixture in the city’s dining scene, known for both its excellent Italian fare and its esteemed cakes, desserts and chocolates. Today, Cova operates a portfolio of outlets comprising restaurants, cafes, and pasticceria-confetterias, across the city. Our dining choice was the elegant Cova Ristorante, located in Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay. Our visit this time was to try out Cova’s new menu, now livelier and more casual, emphasising the use of premium Italian ingredients with a homelier and simpler cooking approach. The task of creating the new menu falls to Executive Chef Sergio Landi, who hails from Naples and earned his stripes under master chef Vicenzo Cammerucci in Milan. He then worked in Spain, France, the United States and Russia before joining Cova nine years ago, and in the process developed his own style of modern European cooking. The setting at Cova is familiar – clean, woodaccented décor with a comfortable-looking dining area adorned with white tablecloths. The booths and dining tables are generously spaced, offering understated intimacy and privacy for guests. For our dinner, we sampled some of Cova’s signature dishes and fabulous desserts. We started with three starters. The first, Parma Ham & Red Wine Poached Peach ($120), is hand-sliced prosciutto garnished with

slices of variously prepared peach, including a red wine-poached peach with a nice, tangy taste. Next was Beetroot Marinated Salmon with Radish ($140), in which slices of beetroot-marinated salmon is served with radish and creamy avocado mousse. The last starter is a popular favourite, Burrata Cheese with Mixed Tomatoes ($155), in which Italian heirloom tomato, watermelon and olive oil augment the flavour of the burrata cheese. For hot dishes, the Scallop AOP ($290), linguine with giant sea scallop – usually from Hokkaido, with garlic, chili and olive oil – is a real treat. As is Wagyu Paccheri ($160) in which slow-cooked wagyu ribs are served with half-paccheri pasta in tomato sauce and fresh ricotta. Another excellent dish is Avocado Langoustine Spaghetti ($280), and is Cod with Mixed Seafood ($250); the baked cod fillet and mixed seafood plus Italian cherry tomato is delicately cooked in a wine sauce. We wrapped up our lively and delicious meal with Cova’s signature Tiramisu glass ($90) and a delightful concoction Mango Dome Slice ($90) plus Assorted Chocolate ($128/100g) from the confetteria. Cova offers a selection of reasonably priced wines; ours included a nice prosecco, a dry and light white wine and a fruity and full-bodied red wine. Cova also offers a premium collection of wines on request. Though its menu has changed adroitly to appeal to a younger clientele, we are happy to see that Cova manages to maintain its lofty standards and quality. So for young or old, Cova sets the standard for an enchanting Italian dining experience.■

As expected, a distinctive gstronomic experience forms an integral part of its services, including sophisticated French haute cuisine at L’Envol, our dining destination this month.
our meal began in earnest with Le Saumon Balik, kumquat-marinated salmon with smoked roe and Melba toast. The kumquat imbues the fish with a pleasant tangy flavour. Next served was La Barbue Petit Bateau, baked line-caught brill, saffron ratte potato and taggiasche olives. The fish is ultra-tender and its subtle seasoning offers a nice lingering taste.
Envol means “to take flight” in French, and that seems to be the aspirational theme of its décor, created by Andre Fu, one of the city’s top designers. The spacious restaurant oozes opulence and luxury, with touches of feminine artistry in its tones and embellishments. The main dining room is bright and airy; a private dining salon next to it offers intimacy and exclusivity.
For the main course, the menu offers a choice of La Caille de Montrevel-en-bresse, which is deboned quail marinated in red wine, roasted black figs and foie gras or, for an additional $200, Le Boeuf Kagoshima A3, seared A3 Kagoshima beef tenderloin, crispy potatoes and truffle sauce. We chose both and they were each outstanding. The quality of the ingredients, in this care the quail and the beef, complement well the seasonings and garnishing, proving the old adage that excellent food starts with excellent ingredients. Still, kudos to the chef for bringing them together so well.
At the helm of L’Envol is the highly acclaimed Olivier Elzer, who can boast of garnering 18 Michelin stars and who has worked in some of the world’s finest restaurants. At L’Envol, Elzer brings his mastery of French cooking techniques to create innovative, seasonal dishes, using premium-quality fresh ingredients from France and Asia. L’Envol also stocks an exclusive selection of over 800 wines curated by Sommelier Tristan Pommier, including rare vintages and limited-edition bottles from small, boutique wineries. The restaurant offers several tasting menus for both lunch and dinner. They include the eightcourse Prestige menu ($2,688 per person), the eight-course Signature menu ($1,888 per person) and the five-course Decouverte menu ($1,288 per person). It also offers an Allure set lunch for $588. The tasting menus come with pairing wines, as expected. We chose the five-course Decouverte for our lunch. A five-glass Wine Discovery pairing is offered for $880. After an appetising amuse bouche,

The meal ends with a creative cheese concoction, Le Saint-Marcellin De La Ferme De Plantimay, which is Saint-Marcellin cheese prepared in two ways, shaped like a honeycomb, accompanied by a glass of hydromel. That was followed by Le Chocolat Mekonga, Vietnamese Mekonga 70% pure origin chocolate and sea salt caramel chocolate ice cream, a glorious finishing touch. The excellent selection of wines that accompanied our meal really added to the experience, and earned our sincere thanks to the sommelier. L’Envol is destined to make its mark in the city’s pantheon of distinguished French fine-dining outlets. It is certainly worth visiting and enjoying a truly special meal that can meet the loftiest of expectations.■

Bubba Gump offers refreshing seasonal menu. 阿甘蝦餐廳提供令人耳目一新的時令菜單。 Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, the iconic American-themed restaurant modelled after Forrest Gump, the movie classic and its beloved lead character, has introduced a seasonal menu to celebrate summertime. For those new to Bubba Gump, a visit is a revelatory experience: the décor is all Gump, all the time; shrimp is prominently featured, while the view from the Peak overlooking the city and the harbour is spectacular. We sampled items offered in the seasonal menu, most of which are shrimp, of course. It’s safe to say that no one outdoes Bubba Gump in demonstrating the ways shrimp can be prepared. The Shrimper’s Net Catch in Beer ($160), in either Garlic Spice or Secret Recipe Cajun Spice, is a case in point, as is Cajun Shrimp ($98). The Yin Yang Shrimp Salad ($155) with mango, an Asian-American fusion dish, is light and fruity. For a change on the palate, we tried Blood Orange Glazed Salmon ($220), which is tender and tangy with the fillet grilled just right. And finally, Lt. Dan’s Surf and Turf ($278), classic baby-back ribs with grilled shrimp and fries, is also delicious and a firm favourite. The desserts included our yummy choice, Alabama Brownie ($82) – served with vanilla ice cream, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae ($82) – also featuring vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate and caramel sauce, peanuts and whipped cream. Creative and refreshing cocktails and drinks have always been Bubba’s stock in trade. We tried Coronarita ($150), a traditional margarita with a squeeze of lime juice topped with a Corona Extra beer, Strawberry Mango Chiller ($85), Bubba’s Blue Hawaiian ($99) and Delta Sunset ($109). All are excellent. A visit to Bubba Gump guarantees a fun and hearty meal, and don’t forget to take home souvenirs of various Forest Gump – related paraphernalia.

Cordis’s Ming Court unveils a special vegetarian menu. 明閣推出特別素食菜單。 Ming Court, the Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant located in Cordis Hong Kong hotel, in collaboration with Green Monday, a fastgrowing social venture group, has unveiled a new vegetarian menu introducing delicious yet healthy dishes that combine traditional Chinese vegetarian dishes with newly developed proxy-meat products. Ming Court’s vegetarian menu is not just for vegetarians and vegans, but rather anyone looking to enjoy a tasty and healthy meal. With the advent of Beyond Burger and others, great strides are being made in creating yummy vegetarian food that mimics the tastes of meat. One such endeavour is Green Monday’s Omnipork, which is catching attention in the Asian market, where pork is a major food source. Ming Court is offering a Vegetarian Set Menu ($788 per person). The menu starts with Gardein Chicken, Celery, Enoki Mushroom and Cordyceps Flower, Chilled and an excellent doubled-boiled soup – Matsutaki Mushroom, Bamboo Pith and Chinese Cabbage. Next is the wok-fried Beyond Burger, Basil, Fresh Peppercorn, Onion and Bell Pepper, followed by Sweet and Sour Omnipork with Pineapple, a classic stir-fry. While some may judge these near-meat dishes by how closely they resemble actual meat, we think they taste just great in their own right. Other dishes on the menu are Baby Spinach, Elm Fungus, Yellow Fungus, Braised and Fried Rice, Beyond Sausage, Salted Lemon and Black Olive while, for dessert, we were drawn to the Natural Resin, Egg White and Almond Cream.
Ming Court also offers à la carte chef recommendations that include the popular steamed Shanghainese Omnipork Dumpling ($68/3 pieces) – it was sold out, and steamed Omnipork Pork Bun with Preserved Vegetable ($68/3 pieces). If you are looking for a healthy and yummy meal, and want to feel good about yourself, we highly recommend the Vegetarian Menu at Ming Court. Its signature Shepherd’s Pie is a must-try and its traditional dessert Bread and Butter Pudding is also fantastic. Beginning this summer, Garden Café, located in the City Garden Hotel in North Point, is featuring “Mega Fun, Mega Share!” Dinner Buffet in which specialty themed dishes and offerings are added to an already sumptuous buffet to create a “jumbo” dining experience for diners. The new buffet offers signature large-sized dishes not easily prepared at home and, together with a “Night Market Corner” showcasing street food from around the world, the buffet is perfect for family gatherings or international visiting groups. Garden Café is featuring three signature dishes every evening. These include Extra-long Beef Wellington, a baked filet steak wrapped in mushrooms, Parma Ham and puff pastry; a 28-inch Spanish Paella covered with tasty sausages, shrimp, fish, mussels, and more; and a 15kg Giant Garoupa in Giant Steamer in which the two-foot-long fish is served whole in a custom-made steamer; Peking Duck; Brazilian Barbecued Chicken; Portuguese Suckling Pig; and Melting Swiss Raclette Cheese. The Night Market Corner offers a potpourri of favourite street food items from all over the world. Tops are among them are street food from Taiwan, including it make-your-own Taiwanese Taro Balls dessert with varying toppings and Oyster Omelettes. Other options are Stuffed Squid with Rice in Mexican Salsa Sauce, Fish and Chips, and Swedish Meatballs. Hong Kong street food is also well represented with choices such as Pork Knuckles and Ginger Stew and Century Eggs and Pickled Ginger.

Censers were popular in the Han dynasty. This goose-shaped censer is life-like. The back of the goose body is latticed, allowing smoke to rise from it. The censer is similar in function to the more well-known boshanlu-style censers from the Han period, but its form is very different. Incense was burned not just for the aroma, but also for practical reasons, such as acting as an insect repellent, and to purify the air. Centre for Heritage and Arts The revitalised Central Police Station compound, the largest heritage project in Hong Kong, has opened its doors to the public as Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts. The CPS compound comprises 16 historic buildings, including three declared monuments (Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison), on a 13,600-square-metre site in the heart of Central. An international-grade art gallery and an auditorium have been added to contribute to the adaptive reuse of the site. The heritage site includes new art galleries and the Parade Ground and Prison Yard.
