Hong Kong continues to move towards opening our city for international travel. With community cases practically stopped and our vaccination effort proceeding, the city is poised to ease inbound travel restrictions and quarantine rules. While some social distancing measures remain in place and masks must still be worn in all public places, the city is returning to normal, and more events and activities are resuming. For prudence, though, we suggest that you contact your concierge for up-to-date details of restrictions. August means summer holidays. Due to the pandemic, most Hong Kong residents are spending their summer in the city. But there is no need to fret as the city offers a stack of summer fun activities and places to visit that you and your family can enjoy. CityLife is proud to present its 2021 Summer Fun Edition; please go to our cover story on page 6 for more details. This month, we bring you part two of our guide to circumnavigating Hong Kong Island’s coastline on foot. Last month, we detailed Section 1 of this walking route, which traverses the Victoria Harbour waterfront. This month, we lay out Sections 2, 3, and 4, which meander through the south side of the island before returning to Shau Kei Wan. Unlike the harbourfront, the southern coastline is more varied and more challenging to walk – but is nevertheless rewarding. See page 12 for all the details. This month, continuing the trend of events resuming, several trade fairs and arts-related events are taking place across the territory, including Food Expo 2021, the Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival 2021, and the Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong. Please go to our Calendar section for more information. As the pandemic eases, more and more people are dining out, and restaurants are becoming more crowded again. In our food section this month, we highlight three restaurants and the chefs that helm their kitchens. For the summer, many restaurants have seasonal menu offerings, making it a great time to check out the city’s vibrant dining scene. There is no better way to beat the summer heat than taking a cool swim at one of the city’s many easily accessible beaches. With more than 100 to choose from, usually suitable for swimming, you are spoiled for choice. 沒有什麼比在城市的眾多海灘上暢遊一番更能消暑的方法了。香港有100 多個海灘，其中許多適合游泳，任你選擇。
Shek O / Big Wave Bay – surfing and swimming haven 石澳/大浪湾——冲浪和游泳的天堂 These beautiful beaches on southeast Hong Kong Island attract swimmers and surfers for the unimpeded waves from the South China Sea. The enchanting village of Shek O provides a rustic backdrop to the two hotspots. And it’s still just a (thrilling) bus ride away from the urban core of Hong Kong. Clearwater Bay Beaches 清水湾海滩 Due to its proximity to the city and relatively easy access, the two beaches at Clearwater Bay (1 and 2) can be busy on a sunny weekend. Still, the water quality is generally good, the sand is smooth, and the amenities are excellent. Not all of Hong Kong’s 260 islands are accessible, but a day excursion to a popular or less-visited outlying island a perfect getaway experience. 並非香港的 260 座島嶼都可以到達，但有足夠多的島嶼可以讓你擁有完美的離島一日遊度假體驗。
Lamma Island 南丫岛 Lamma Island is a favourite weekend destination for locals and visitors alike. For a scenery-laden route, we suggest you start from Yung Shue Wan village and walk to Sok Kwu Wan. You’ll pass by a popular stand selling beancurd pudding before reaching Hung Shing Yeh Beach, a pretty, sandy beach worth lingering at. A modest uphill walk to the ridge offers a panoramic view of the island and the power plant beyond. Descend the hill. You’ll pass by some rustic villages, mangroves and a Tin Hau Temple before arriving at Sok Kwu Wan where a row of seafood restaurants awaits you. Cap your day with a yummy live-catch seafood meal before taking the ferry back to Central. Tung Lung Chau 东龙洲 This pristine island lying just off the Clearwater Bay Peninsula in Sai Kung District is a nice hidden gem. Reachable only on weekends and public holidays, Tung Lung Island is famous for the cliff climbing rocks along its northeast coastline. There is an abandoned fort with a camp site nearby. A scenic footpath offers unimpeded views of the sea and the peninsula opposite. Catch the ferry from Sai Wan Ho at the pier in the Aldrich Bay Typhoon Shelter, near Grand Promenade, or from Sam Ka Tsuen Ferry Pier in Lei Yue Mun. 這個位於西貢區清水灣半島附近的原始島嶼是隱藏寶石。東龍島僅在周 末和公眾假期可到達，以其東北海岸線的懸崖峭壁而聞名。附近有廢棄 堡壘和營地。風景優美的小徑可以一覽無餘地欣賞大海和半島的景色。 在西灣河愛秩序灣避風塘內的碼頭或鯉魚門三家村碼頭乘搭渡輪。
Sharp Island Beaches 桥咀泳滩 Part of the Hong Kong Global Geopark, Sharp Island is just minutes from Sai Kung town centre by kaito (boat). The island features a tombolo and two clean beaches: Kiu Tsui Beach and Hap Mun Bay Beach. On a good day, the water can be crystal clear – perfect for swimming and splashing about. 作為香港世界地質公園的一部分，橋咀泳灘距離西 貢市中心只有幾分鐘的路程，可以乘坐渡輪到達。 島上有一個連島和兩個乾淨的海灘：橋咀泳灘和廈 門灣泳灘。天氣好的時候，水會非常清澈——非常 適合游泳。

Shaved Ice 刨冰 Shaved ice is popular with millennials and the younger generation. And why not, as nothing better cools the body than smooth and cold ice shavings flavoured with a creative variety of sweet toppings and ingredients. Visit 2DP in Tsim Sha Tsui (12 Hau Fook St) and try out its shaved ice drinks, which are popular with Instagrammers. Gelato 义式冰淇淋 This popular Italian frozen dessert is building a presence in the city, with scores of gelato shops opened in the city’s trendy areas and shopping malls. Two minutes’ walk away is the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, Hong Kong’s oldest park, which was opened to the public in 1871. Hong Kong’s hilly terrain offers several hundred greater and lesser peaks climbable by anyone reasonable fit. Only a few have summits that are accessible by or close to a road. Here are a selection that are just an easy hike from wheeled transport, where you can enjoy the cooler mountain air without too much strenuous walking. 由於地勢多山，香港有數百座山峰可供人們攀登或徒步登頂。但是，很少有山是可以通過公路到達，都需要一段徒步到達山頂。 我們設法找到了幾個，這樣您就可以享受涼爽的山間空氣，而無需費力步行。
The Peak – Victoria Peak Garden 太平山顶——山顶公园 At 552 metres (1,811 feet), Mount Austin or Victoria Peak is the tallest mountain on Hong Kong Island. Most visitors, though, congregate at the Peak area, close to the Peak Tram terminus, where the Peak Tower and the Galleria are located. But drive up Mount Austin Road and you’ll discover a tranquil garden sitting almost atop the mountain. Kowloon Peak 飞鹅山 Despite its intimidating cliffs (one is called Suicide Cliff!) and steep slopes, Kowloon Peak, Kowloon’s most prominent peak (602 metres/1,975 feet), is easily accessible by car and a short walk. Take Clear Water Bay Road from Choi Hung and get off at Fei Ngo Shan Road just atop the ridge. The road winds its way up, passing several luxury residences before opening to views of Sai Kung and eventually the lookout point. You are greeted with one of the best panoramic views of the city. Tai Mo Shan 大帽山 Hong Kong tallest mountain (957 metres/3,140 feet) is surprisingly easy to get to by car. Tai Mo Shan Road, a paved road that reaches all the way to the summit radar station, is off Route Twisk, which connects Tsuen Wan with Kam Tin. Cars without permit can travel only as far as the Tai Mo Shan Road Top Car Park, followed by an easy two-kilometre stroll to the radar station. This month, part two of our article on circumnavigating Hong Kong Island’s coastline by foot follows the south side of the island, featuring sandy beaches, sheltered bays and harbours, rugged headlands, all interspersed with an interesting array of neighbourhoods. 本月，我们将继续关于步行环游香港岛海岸线的文章的第二部分从港岛的南侧出发，有沙滩、避 风港、海港、崎岖的岬角，还穿插着很多有趣社区。
I
n contrast to Section 1 of our Hong Kong Island Coastline route – a walk along the Victoria Harbour waterfront, the next three sections offer the intrepid explorer a wide range of mostly natural geography and scenery – a visual smorgasbord that includes beaches, quiet coves, sea channels, fishing harbours, rocky bluffs, rugged headlands and rocky shorelines. It is a challenge to genuinely follow the coastline throughout, as several headlands are off-limits and stretches of rocky shorelines are deemed unsafe to follow save for the most skilled hikers. But this invigorating route keeps you on the island’s coastline or as near as possible, affording an appreciation of Hong Kong Island’s stunning beauty and diversity. We have broken the almost 50 kilometres into three convenient sections, each making for a pleasant day’s hike of 5 to 6 hours. Do enjoy!

Pok Fu Lam along Victoria Road
(Sai Wan Swimming Shed, Jubilee Battery)
薄扶林沿域多利道 (西湾泳棚，银禧炮台) Start at the beginning of Victoria Road, heading towards Pok Fu Lam. You pass by the historic Sai Wan Swimming Shed and Jubilee Battery located on the coast, both of which are well-known photo spots. Continue along Victoria Road for a couple of kilometres and look for Sandy Bay Road which leads you toward the shoreline, passing by several sports fields along the way. Continue along Sai Wan and you reach Cyberport, where you can enjoy the Lamma Channel and along the expansive Cyberport Waterfront Park, before proceeding to Waterfall Bay Park.

Waterfall Bay/Aberdeen 瀑布湾/香港仔 Look for a walking trail off Cyberport Road that leads to Pok Fu Lam Waterfall and the adjacent Waterfall Bay Park, below Wah Fu Estate – one of Hong Kong’s earliest public housing estates. If you miss the trail, then you’ll need to walk along the road and make a long detour to get to the waterfall. The Pok Fu Lam Waterfall is unique in Hong Kong in that it is directly on the shoreline; as early as the 17th century it was used by merchant ships to replenish their fresh water supplies. Continue along Tin Wan Praya and you’ll soon reach Aberdeen Harbour, one of the city’s earliest fishing harbours that still retains some of its old charm. If you feel energetic, you may want to hop across the bridge to the island of Ap Lei Chau, and hike up Mount Johnston to enjoy panoramic views of the sea channel and Lamma Island opposite.

Shum Wan, Brickhill Pavilion and Ocean Park 深湾、南朗亭及海洋公园 Continue along the waterfront along Heung Yip Path, crossing underneath the bridge. There is a path along the shoreline that leads you all the way to Aberdeen Marina Club and its flotilla of luxury yachts, with the iconic Jumbo floating restaurant looming over the harbour. Walk along Shum Wan Road to the southern entrance of Ocean Park, which takes up the entire headland. You then have to head back. We suggest you take a flight of steps to reach Nam Long Shan Road and then a short hike to Brickhill Pavilion for more scenic views. The end of Section 2 is near the Ocean Park entrance, which you can reach via Nam Long Shan Road, Police School Road, Ocean Park Road and then Wong Chuk Hang Road which turns into Island Road.

This route passes some of the city’s most famous beaches and through upscale neighbourhoods. While the rocky shorelines necessitate a few detours along the way, the views make it worth the effort. 这条路线途经香港一些著名的海滩和高档社区，但多岩石的海岸线 需要绕道而行。不过沿途景色还是很美的。
The beaches:
Deep Water Bay, Repulse Bay, Middle Bay and South Bay beaches
海滩：深水湾、浅水湾、中湾泳滩和南湾泳滩 This stretch from Island Road to South Bay Beach is one of the most picturesque and relaxing walks on the island. Head along Island Road and look for the steps leading to the Mills & Chong Path after passing the Hong Kong Country Club. The path follows the shoreline leading to Deep Water Bay. From there it’s a lovely stroll along Seaview Promenade to Repulse Bay, passing Middle Island along the way. Hong Kong’s most famous beach is ideal for a rest before you go on; be sure to check out the statues of Kwun Yam and other deities before proceeding to Middle Bay Beach and then South Bay Beach on South Bay Road. These two are perfect if you prefer quietude and want to avoid the thronging crowds at Repulse Bay or Deep Water Bay.

Chung Hom Kok and Stanley 舂坎角和赤柱 Getting to Chung Hom Kok from South Bay Beach, which is just adjacent, can be a challenge. Look for an uphill trail just off the end of the beach that takes you to Chung Hom Kok Road. Points of interest along the road include Chung Hom Kok Beach (a short detour) and Chung Hom Kok Park further down. Retrace your steps and at the roundabout there is a path along the shoreline that takes you to Ma Hang Park, then Pak Tai Temple, and finally Murray House in Stanley. Stanley is one of Hong Kong’s best-known visitor destinations, with points of interest that include Stanley Plaza, Stanley Promenade, Stanley Market, St Stephen’s Beach and, on the far side of the peninsula, Stanley Main Beach. Most of the shoreline along the headland is off limits, but the neck of the peninsula is narrow and easy to cut through from St Stephen’s Beach to Main Beach. From there, it’s a short walk along the sand to Hairpin Beach where a set of stairs takes you up to Tai Tam Road to bypass the rocky shoreline.

Turtle Cove Beach and Tai Tam Bay 龟背湾泳滩和大潭湾 The stretch of Tai Tam Road from just past the American Club to Redhill Peninsula and Turtle Cove Beach may prove challenging, lacking much of a pavement and with minimal road shoulder, meaning you should stay alert (walking facing oncoming traffic, please) and be ready to move smartly close to the edge of the road. It’s only about a kilometre long though. Otherwise, you can take a bus or taxi to cover the short stretch. Turtle Cove is a diminutive sandy beach, perfect for a hideaway and accessed by a set of steps down from the road. Returning the same way to Tai Tam Road, continue to Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir and on to Tai Tam Bay via Tai Tam Reservoir Road. The Tai Tam harbour nestled between Cape D’Aguilar and Redhill Peninsula is Hong Kong Island’s only remaining sheltered bay featuring mangrove and muddy beaches. You can end your walk by hiking up to the other side of the reservoir dam where a bus stop awaits to take you to either Stanley or Shau Kei Wan.

Our island circumnavigation becomes increasingly difficult in this final, more remote section, a stretch of rugged coastline interspersed with beaches until we reach Siu Sai Wan. But it’s also where you’ll find the most gorgeous views and where you feel furthest from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. 由于最后一段是最偏远崎岖的海岸线，直到小西湾的尽头，这一段崎岖的海岸线穿插着海滩，因此环绕海岸 线变得越来越困难。但这也是景色最美丽的地方，徒步旅行让您远离市中心的喧嚣。
Cape D’Aguilar 鹤咀角 From Tai Tam Bay, walk along Hong Kong Trail Section 7 which runs below and parallel to Shek O Road. The level trail follows a catchwater that leads to To Tei Wan. Walk back up to Shek O Road and then further down on the right is Cape D’Aguilar Road, winding its way through several villages before ending at Cape D’Aguilar. This rugged headland features a lighthouse, a couple of caves, and remnants of a whale skeleton. It is as picturesque as you can enjoy in all of Hong Kong.

Shek O and Big Wave Bay 石澳及大浪湾 From Cape D’Aguilar, you need to retrace your route back to Shek O Road before moving on to Shek O, where a lovely beach and a quaint village await. Walk to the end of Shek O Village Road to the headland and on to Tai Tau Chau, which is reachable except at high tide. If rocks are your thing, you are going to love exploring the geological formations here. The popular beach can be crowded at weekends, and you may want to walk another half an hour along Shek O Road to Big Wave Bay, passing by a seaside golf course. Big Wave Bay attracts its share of surfers, as the name hints. You may also want to check out the ancient rock carving further down the beach.

Cape Collinson, Siu Sai Wan and Heng Fa Chuen 哥连臣角、小西湾和杏花村 The last stretch of this epic journey rewards those that persevere. Hike back up Pottinger Hill along the trail overlooking Cape Collinson Correctional Institution until you get to Cape Collinson Road, where you follow the road towards the sea. A walk down to an abandoned battery on the shoreline is recommended. Back up the road, head towards Leaping Dragon Walk, which leads to the Cape Collinson Lighthouse, one of the few still functioning in Hong Kong. From there the Cape Collinson Path takes you back to Siu Sai Wan and Island Resort. From Siu Sai Wan you can pretty much walk along the waterfront, passing by a cargo handling basin to reach Heng Fa Chuen, a pleasant residential development right on the water.

Alas, this is where our journey ends, even though we are only a stone’s throw from the Coastal Defence Museum where Section 1 started. Unfortunately, there is no connecting path, and the two-kilometre detour back to Chai Wan Road then to Ah Kung Ngan Road to get to the museum is probably not worth the effort. Still, for all practical purposes, on proud completion of this perambulation, the dedicated hiker will have a fulsome appreciation of the island’s fascinating coastline! Well done, all!

afé Landmark is one of the most prominent gathering spots in the city. Hovering over the atrium floor of the Landmark, the expansive open-air café is surrounded by myriad luxury fashion brands and throngs of shoppers. Since it opened 20 years ago, Café Landmark is where bankers meet for power breakfasts, savvy tai tais sit for tete-a-tete afternoon teas, and shoppers and office workers come for a casual, relaxed dinner of fine food and wines. Through the years, Café Landmark, which offers a contemporary international cuisine, has managed to stay current by continuously improving its menu and upholding its quality. Much of the credit for Café Landmark’s success goes to veteran Senior Executive Chef Simson Kwan, who has helmed the operation since it opened. From humble beginnings, Chef Kwan started working at 13 years old, as a textile mechanic technician while going to night school. With a dream of becoming a cook in New York, Chef Kwan took cooking classes with some friends but only he persisted. The New York sojourn didn’t quite come through, but Chef Kwan was hooked on cooking, and became the senior chef of a western restaurant at the tender age of 18. Chef Kwan joined Maxim’s in 1977, and rose quickly through its ranks, eventually becoming its executive chef, overseeing western restaurants and leading their openings. He also looks after the company’s catering service. What distinguishes Chef Kwan’s culinary experience is his passion, and curiosity to learn and perfect the skills for all cuisines. Kwan has travelled the world, learning and picking up new cooking techniques and special recipes. In

addition to the western culinary traditions Chef Kwan is accomplished in Chinese, Southeast Asian and Japanese cuisines. A conversation with the loquacious Chef Kwan is a delightful, non-stop journey into the culinary universe. The menu at Café Landmark reflects much of Chef Kwan’s diverse experience. For our meal, we started with Fresh Crabmeat au Gratin ($280/2 pieces), handpicked fresh crabmeat baked in shell with onion, cheddar cheese, French cream, white wine and Hollandaise sauce, and Lobster Bisque ($128) with fresh lobster tail, richly flavoured and savoury. The ever-popular Boston Lobster Linguine ($350), introduced by Chef Kwan in 1985, is continuously upgraded and improved, to keep it contemporary. For the mains we had Grilled Black Pepper U.S. Beef Tenderloin ($350) and Surf and Turf ($360) – grilled half–Boston lobster, U.S. beef tenderloin and sauteed vegetables. The tenderloin is grilled medium rare, its meat is tender, juicy, and flavourful – it’s hard to go wrong with quality USDA beef. A nice glass of Café Landmark’s own private label pinot noir matches the food perfectly. We finished the meal with two lovely desserts: Turkish Delight ($80), rose petal ice cream and Dark Chocolate Molten Cake ($80), served warm with vanilla gelato – a nice way to wrap up the meal. Between excellent food, engaging conversation and relaxing ambience, our visit to Café Landmark was a fun and memorable experience. It’s an excellent venue for pretty much all occasions. We strongly recommend you give it a try and be sure to book early.■

ur latest culinary quest is Tirpse, a high-end Japanese French restaurant out of Tokyo, launched with much fanfare in 2020. Founded in Tokyo by famed chef and owner Naotaka Ohashi, Tirpse became the fastest restaurant to earn a Michelin star upon its opening there in 2015. In Hong Kong, the restaurant is helmed by two Ohashisan’s protegees: Executive Chef Yuta Shimizu and Chef Patissier Rin Horiuchi, both apprenticed in France as part of their culinary careers.

Tirpse – the name is esprit (‘spirit’ in French), reversed – aims to create innovative French dishes by adhering to its uncompromising standards in cooking styles, in using the finest ingredients from all around the world, often from Japan, with impeccable presentation.
Cloud and Forest 招牌蛋糕
The Tirpse décor is contemporary and luxurious, the rich colours of its interior framed by full-height windows, offering an expansive view of the harbour. We were there to try Tirpse’s summer menu of seasonal dishes – brightly coloured, light and visually attractive, and a mood changer, so to speak. Diners can choose either the Selected Lunch Menu ($598), a five-course meal, or the Executive Lunch Menu ($798), a sumptuous, leisurely six-course affair. We chose the latter. Each lunch set can be paired with Free-flow “Michel Arnould” Champagne ($598 per person) or Wine Pairing (three labels for $398 per person or four labels for $528 per person). After a tasty and citrus-based amuse bouche, our first starter was Green Asparagus, Burrata, Hamaguri – crisp asparagus wrapped in soft, chewy burrata and topped with diced clam meat – the burrata is excellent. The second starter was Lobster, Summer Onion, Vanilla, another exquisitely colourful dish that is lovingly presented and tasty too.

For the main course, the menu offers three selections: Hairtail, Smoked Butter, Mirin, a tender fish dish lightly grilled and topped with foam; Platinum Pork, Corn, Parsley, in which the marbled premium pork slices are painstakingly slow pan-fried and paired with tempura fried vegetables and garnished with parsley; and Pigeon, Sansho, Yuzu ($138 extra charge), in which the French squab meat is grilled and seasoned with sancho pepper and yuzu citrus flavours. All three dishes are outstanding. We should mention that Tirpse serves delicious bread, baked in-house and served with special butter. Tirpse also excels in desserts, created by chef Rin, a culinary force of nature. For the meal, we had Blueberry, Lavender, Violet, a light, fruity pound cake, plus Petit Fours. We also had Chef Rin’s signature desserts – Cloud and Forest. Cloud ($128/petite and $1080/whole) is a beautiful white cake made with damask rose petal, lychee and raspberry jam, while Forest ($108/petite and $780/whole) is a meticulously layered modern take on Black Forest Gateau. Both hit the spot perfectly. For good measure, we sampled several cocktails and wines including “Blanc de Noir” Champagne Cocktail ($178) and Pink Punch ($168). Dining at Tirpse proved a holistic experience of premium ingredients, exquisite taste and aesthetically superb presentation and service. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just out to enjoy an evening with friends, Tirpse is worth a visit. Highly recommended.■

e rarely get excited by the opening of a new Cantonese restaurant, given the sheer number of such quality establishments available. But the reputation of the team behind the Luxe Garden, a new upscale but affordable Cantonese restaurant in Central, tempted us to visit. The creative force behind Luxe Garden is its General Manager Po Kee, a well-known F&B operator and an acclaimed dim sum chef who has worked for many of the city’s stalwart dining groups, including Maxim’s, Superstar Seafood and East Ocean. He has been joined by other veteran Cantonese chefs and operators including awardwinning culinary directors Thomas Ho and Matt Choi – dubbed the “Twin Dragons”, F&B Director Ben Wong, and Wade Po, as Operations Manager. Together, this formidable group brings over 100 years of culinary and F&B experience. Located on Lyndhurst Terrace, just minutes from Lan Kwai Fong and Soho, the restaurant is decorated smartly; in addition to the dining area, the outlet also houses three private VIP rooms. Luxe Garden has a simple but effective two-pronged approach to its menu offerings, based on its affinity with the city’s dining scene – offer creative, photogenic and colourful dim sum items for lunch and serve classic, authentic, favourite Cantonese dishes for dinner, aiming for a nice balance of premium quality and price. We were there for its plethora of dim sum dishes.

Pedigreed Po Kee is widely considered one of the pioneers of ‘cartoon-figure dim sum’, in which dim sum items are shaped to resemble cartoon or animation characters. Hence, a dim sum meal at Luxe Garden can both be

appetising and fun. For our meal, were treated to many of Luxe’s Garden’s signature creations: Dinghu Style Shrimp Dumpling ($46/ 2 pieces), Crab-shaped Shrimp Dumplings ($38/ 2 pieces), Sichuan-style Spicy Pork Dumplings ($32), and a real visual treat – Penguin-shaped Red Bean Paste Bun ($50/2 pieces), which is beautifully and intricately presented over a bed of dry ice – the buns are really tasty too. Be sure to order this one. Another interesting dim sum dish is Beef Rolls Stuffed with Mushrooms ($38), with a wagyu beef filling. Other dishes we tried included Sauteed Sakura Ebi with Pomelo Peel ($98), Pan-fried Dumplings Filling with Oyster ($88) and Chef Lung-styled Fried Rice, a delicious and savoury shrimp fried rice. We finished our meal with another Hong Kong creation, Earl Grey Tea Pudding ($29), original and rather tasty. Luxe Garden offers various lunch sets, starting from $288 per person (minimum of 2 persons) to $888 for four persons, that include selected menu items, including its signature Pork Lung w/Almond Soup which is a must-try. The restaurant can also make various customised dim sum items for kids – ideal for birthday parties. We are confident Luxe Garden will be a success and a destination for those seeking quality food and yummy and interesting dim sum. So do give it a try before it gets discovered. We highly recommend it. ■

As one of the hotel’s F&B mainstays, L’Eau Restaurant is well-known to residents of Sha Tin. The restaurant was designed for buffet and carries its mission off with aplomb. The spacious and airy restaurant overlooks the hotel’s swimming pool; its décor is contemporary, light and clean, with several wellplaced serving stations that anchor the dining space. The pool’s outdoor patio houses the grills for the barbeque. For this summer buffet, the featured grilled items include Korean-style marinated meats such as pork belly, chicken breast and Angus beef ribs, wagyu beef with red wine sauce, mussels, raw oysters, selected fish items, crab claws, rack of lamb, goose liver, corn, mushroom, and others. The cold buffet items are equally impressive, highlighted by large trays of cold boiled shrimp, whelk, crayfish, sundry sashimi and sushi items. Hot dishes include curries, Malay satays, lasak, as well as crispy roast duck, and more. Be sure to save plenty of room for desserts though, which can be a meal in themselves. Featured items include a chocolate fondue fountain for dipping, an array of tarts, Korean-style strawberry mousse cake, dark truffle chocolate servings, puddings, macaroons, and various flavours of Movenpick ice cream in serving-size cups.

The price for the buffet is reasonable and certainly value for money. For the weekday dinner buffet, the price is from $538 up per adult, $388 up per senior and $288 up per child. L’Eau also serves lunch buffets, priced at $318 up per adult and $238 up and $208 up per senior and child respectively. Better yet, the restaurant is promoting a special offer of 40% off for the first 50 guests each day for the dinner buffet. If you are in the mood to indulge and gorge yourself with a hearty and sumptuous meal that fills all your palate, the buffet at L’Eau is an excellent choice. Give it a try and book early.

La Rotisserie Since the opening of its first outlet in Sheung Wan, La Rotisserie, a French bistro specialising in authentic rotisserie grilled chicken, has become a popular casual dining spot for all kinds of Hongkongers. Its success has led to opening in other locations on Hong Kong island, including the recently opened sixth branch in busy Causeway Bay, at Lee Garden One.

La Rotisserie serves a large collection of hot side dishes and salads. They come either in a large dish that can serve 8 to 10 people or in smaller side dishes of various portions. The ones we tried included Steamed Vegetables, Ratatouille, Sauteed Quinoa, French Bean Salad, Quinoa & Avocado Salad, and Cucumber & Tomato Salad. La Rotisserie also serve a tasty Roast Chicken Sandwich ($62) and Mini Baguette ($12), baked daily. We should note that the restaurant prides itself on using almost exclusively French ingredients directly supplied from France.

The famed British architect who designed Buckingham Palace's facade had his Hong Kong drawings "improved" by the Hong Kong Public Works Department, reveals Arthur Hacker.

A
t the end the 19th century, Hong Kong was considered a backwater compared with other great cities of the British Empire, so the appointment of Sir Aston Webb as architect of the Supreme Court Building was a considerable triumph for then Governor Sir Henry Blake. Webb, with his partner Ingress Bell, designed the facade of Buckingham Palace, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Admiralty Arch. It is possible that Blake's wife, Edith, had a hand in Webb's appointment. This formidable lady had powerful connections. Her sister was married to the Duke of St Albans, who was a descendent of King Charles ll and Nell Gwynn. Webb's splendid elevation drawing of the facade was a beautifully proportioned neoclassical design. Unfortunately, the finished building that emerged in Hong Kong's Statue Square looked rather different. This follows a recurring trend that is found in British municipal colonial architecture where Public Works Departments and their contractors in distant colonies attempted to "improve" on the original plans.

Work began on the foundations in 1900. The building was located on reclaimed land that hadn't properly settled and groundwater proved a problem. Seventy years later the builders of the nearby Furama Hotel (now demolished) had similar problems with foundations and there were rumours at the time that the hotel building leaned six inches to the east. With the Supreme Court Building the problem was solved only after hundreds of tree trunks had been driven into the reclamation to create a raft on which the building more or less floated. This caused a lengthy delay of some three years before Governor Blake laid the foundation stone, just before he left the colony in November 1903. It was then discovered that the contractor, Chan A Tong, had started constructing the building facing the wrong direction, so that the entrance was opposite the Cricket Ground (now Chater Garden) instead of Statue Square. This meant that the foundations of the building had to be altered in order to conform with the planned

工作造成的延誤，結果費時三年後，卜力港督才能放下奠基石，剛好 在他離開香港前，也就是 1903 年 11 月。
interior walls. Chan A Tong died in 1904 and his son took over the construction. The bottom part of the building up to the parapet on the roof with its triangular pediment followed Webb and Bell's design pretty accurately. When it came to the top half of the building the Public Works Department site architect, H G Fisher, made a few adjustments to the shape and size of the dome. He enlarged by a few feet the eaves of the wing structures on the roof above the parapet, causing these structures to resemble two top-heavy rooftop squatter huts rather than a logical extension of the main body of the building, thus transforming the impeccable design by Britain's leading municipal architect into a quaint mishmash of ill-proportioned colonial architecture. The Supreme Court has been described officially as a "neo-classical building with Chinese influences". This is a polite way of saying that Fisher and Chan junior's changes wreaked havoc with the classical proportions of Sir Aston's original design.

During the opening ceremony in 1912, Chief Justice Sir Francis Piggott prophesied, "When Victoria has ceased to be a city, when the harbour has silted up, when even the Hong Kong Club has crumbled away, this building will remain."

Today the old City of Victoria is called Central District, the harbour is much smaller than it was, and the old Hong Kong Club building was demolished and replaced by a structure that resembles a 1970s domestic air conditioner. The Old Supreme Court Building, in spite of its faults, is still arguably the finest old building in Hong Kong. ln 1985 the interior was gutted and the "noble pile" was re-purposed as the Legislative Council Building. But things would turn full circle. In 2011, the Legislative Council moved to its new home tucked in beside the spanking new Government Building Complex, so that, in 2015, after interior remodelling, the Old Supreme Court Building reverted to its rightful role as home to the Court of Final Appeal – the equivalent judiciary body in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.■
今天維多利亞舊城已經稱為中環；維多利亞港面積也在縮小；舊 香港會所的建築物已被拆卸，被一個像七十年代冷氣機模樣的建築物 所取代。最高法院雖然有它的缺點，但至今仍然是香港最吸引人的舊 建築遺址。在 1985 年，內部重新裝修，這座高貴的建築物也改名為 立法會大樓。但事情回到原點， 2011 年，立法會遷入新址，是新政 府大樓的一部分。 2015 年，舊最高法院大樓恢復原貌，成為終審法 院所在地，也就是以前的最高法院司法機構。■

Censers were popular in the Han dynasty. This goose-shaped censer is life-like. The back of the goose body is latticed, allowing smoke to rise from it. The censer is similar in function to the more well-known boshanlu-style censers from the Han period, but its form is very different. Incense was burned not just for the aroma, but also for practical reasons, such as acting as an insect repellent, and to purify the air. Combining aesthetics, practicality, and philosophy, censers are of high artistic and historical value. Originally the home of the commander-in-chief of the British forces, the museum houses a huge collection of tea ware in Hong Kong's oldest surviving colonial building. Centre for Heritage and Arts The revitalised Central Police Station compound, the largest heritage project in Hong Kong, has opened its doors to the public as Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts. The CPS compound comprises 16 historic buildings, including three declared monuments (Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison), on a 13,600-square-metre site in the heart of Central. An international-grade art gallery and an auditorium have been added to contribute to the adaptive reuse of the site. The heritage site includes new art galleries and the Parade Ground and Prison Yard. Hong Kong Space Museum
Hall of the Cosmos and Space Exploration Covering a total area of 1,600 square metres, the "Hall of the Cosmos" and "Hall of Space Exploration" house a hundred new exhibits, of which about 70 percent are interactive. Flagfall charges for the first 2km are from HK$19-24, with incremental charges of HK$1.21.7 for every subsequent 200m. Detailed taxi fare information is listed inside the taxi.
