e welcome you to Hong Kong and to CityLife, the monthly magazine for visitors to Asia’s World City. May brings another busy period for the city, packed with fun-filled and unique events perfect for visitors. It’s not an exaggeration to anoint May as the month of deities, as several revered deities are celebrated, and, along with them, festivals and special events. The most famous one, and quirky, is the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, which celebrates Pai Tak, a well-known deity. Besides all the colourful pageantry, which includes offerings to gods, dancing, floats and parades, the highlight is the iconic bun-grabbing competition in which contestants clamber up 60-foot bun towers to grab as many lucky buns as possible. If you happen to be in town, you’ll not want to miss this one-of-a kind event. May also celebrates the Buddha’s Birthday as many Buddhist shrines, temples and monasteries perform elaborate ceremonies and rituals. The largest celebration will take place at Po Lin Monastery, site of the Big Buddha. The birthday of Tam Kung, an important local deity and protector of fishermen, is also celebrated. The largest ceremony takes place at the Tam Kung Temple in Shau Kei Wan on Hong Kong Island. Another longstanding cultural event is Le French May Arts Festival, now in its 27th edition. The festival has grown over the years to become one of the largest French arts festivals in Asia, with over 500 events scheduled for the period. Whether you are a Francophile or not, you may want to catch the French spirit, which is alive and well in Hong Kong. The northwest part of the New Territories of Hong Kong is home of the city’s only wetlands, which are protected. Most of the area remain rural with old villages still standing after centuries of habitation. Our cover story on page 10 showcases the area’s nature and heritage spots for visitors, including the best sunset photo spot in Hong Kong. Sports fans may want to catch the pulsating, nonstop action as the city hosts the Mega Ice Hockey 5s tournament which, over the years, has grown to be one of the largest ice-hockey tournaments in Asia, with teams from the regions plus local clubs competing in various age groups. How about enjoying arts that don’t burn a hole in your pocket? The Affordable Art Festival gains in popularity each year, showcasing works by promising and wellknown artists of all stripes that you can browse through or purchase at an affordable budget. Finally, for opera lovers, the Hong Kong Opera performs Mozart’s masterpiece, Don Giovani. Follow the travails of Don Juan and hum to some of your favourite arias for a musical night out. Whether it’s a colourful and fun-filled festival, a visit to the tranquil wetlands of the northwest, taking in ice-hockey action, attending art fairs and the opera, May is another month full of activities that will enthral visitors. Buddha's Birthday

The Birthday of the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, also known as Sakyamuni), also called the Buddha Bathing Festival, is one of the most spiritual and unique festivals celebrated in Hong Kong. According to legend, nine dragons sprayed water to bathe the baby Buddha at birth. Thus, on his birthday, devotees gather at Buddhist temples to bathe statues of him, in a ritual that is believed to aid in the purification of one’s soul. One of the grandest ceremonies is held at the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, home of the Big Buddha.

每年佛誕，全港佛堂寺廟都有禮佛慶典和浴佛法會，其中以大嶼山寶蓮禪寺的活動最盛大。佛誕又稱「浴佛節」，相傳佛祖出生時，天上有九條龍噴下清泉為他沐浴，所以日後佛誕都有這個儀式。如今善信會以香湯沐浴佛身，寓意以佛祖的智能，洗滌污濁，淨化心靈。同樣蘊藏禪理的還有賀誕食品蒝荽餅，其味帶甘苦，寓意人生苦盡甘來。

Birthday of Tam Kung

Built in 1905 and reconstructed in 2002, the temple's original design is carefully preserved. Inside you’ll find an iron bell and a stone tablet that date back to the construction of the temple. There are also models of a wooden junk and dragon boat. It is believed that the boulder in front of the temple bears the seal of Tam Kung. Here, every year, devotees mark his birthday with an array of ceremonies, including dragon and lion dances and a street parade.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni

Hong Kong Opera perform an opera in two acts with music composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Don Giovanni is based on the legends of Don Juan, the infamous Spanish womanizer. Affluent and attractive, he sweet talks his way into the beds of countless women. Leporello, Giovanni’s servant, keeps record of his master’s encounters. Don Giovanni killed the father of a noblewoman, putting him under the curse of the living and bound by death in hell.

Cheung Chau Bun Festival

One of Hong Kong’s more colourful and unusual festivals, the Cheung Chau Bun Festival on one of the city’s idyllic outlying islands celebrates the deity Pak Tai, whom the islanders petitioned to ward off evil spirits by parading statues of deities through the narrow lanes of their village during an outbreak of the plague. The plague ended after the performance of these Taoist rituals and 100 years later the rituals are still performed in a festival that is listed as an intangible part of China’s cultural heritage. The weeklong event includes Taoist ceremonies and music, a parade, lion dances, drum beating, culminating in a unique Bun Scrambling competition at midnight of the last day of celebration where contestants scamper up 60-foot bun towers to grab as many lucky buns as possible. Billed one of the world’s “Top 10 Quirky Local Festivals”, this is an event attended by thousands of visitors who join the locals in a fun-filled and unique celebration.

長洲太平清醮

長洲太平清醮是香港獨有的民間節慶，在這個田園詩般的島嶼，島上居民全情參與，歡騰又富道地色彩。相傳清朝中葉長洲瘟疫為患，居民向北帝神祈福，並奉北帝神像遊行，疫症才消除。如今，長洲太平清醮被評為國家級非物質文化遺產。為期一周的活動精彩不斷，舞龍舞獅、遊行、慶典儀式、鑼鼓喧天，其中「搶包山」比賽是必看亮點，參與者在60英尺高的包子山上搶奪包子，搶得越多代表越幸運。如今，長洲太平清醮選為「全球十大古怪節日」之一，如此特別又精彩的節目，不容錯過！

THE UNLUCKY GOVERNOR 堅恩上尉

Arthur Hacker tells us that Sir William Robinson lacked some Irish luck. 亞瑟·克赫為我們講述前港督羅便臣爵士的倒霉經歷。

t is said “that it is better to be born lucky than to be born rich.” Unlike his predecessor, Governor Sir William des Voeux (presiding from 1887-1891), Sir William Robinson (1891-1898) was of humble birth. But he was also a very unlucky governor. D e s Vo e u x h a d b e e n a c h a r m i n g , lackadaisical aristocrat who had spent much of his posting shooting snipe on the Yangtze and adored giving parties. ln 1890 he took almost a year's leave; public works ground almost to a halt. However, he did build a new ballroom for Government House and drained the pond at the race track. At the time there was a golf course at Happy Valley. Des Voeux, a golf enthusiast, lost so many balls in the pond that he had it filled in. Lady luck did not smile on the governorship of his successor Sir William Robinson (18911898). He was probably selected as “a safe pair of hands” to tidy up the mess left by Des Voeux. He had spent 37 years in the British Colonial Service and had worked his way up through the ranks from being a humble clerk. Shortly after he arrived in the colony there was a currency crisis,

followed by an outbreak of bubonic plague. This caused a mass evacuation of Chinese residences to the mainland and Hong Kong was declared an infected port. It was not Robinson's fault – he just arrived at an unfortunate time. He managed to cope with these problems, but received little credit from the expatriate community for his efforts. Business was badly affected. At the time there was a popular saying that “power in Hong Kong resides in the Jockey Club, Jardine and Matheson, the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank and the Governor – in that order.” A question had been asked in the UK Parliament about Hong Kong's gambling laws. The colony actually had a Gambling Ordinance but it was totally unenforceable and previous governors had sensibly ignored it. However, Robinson felt obliged to play by the rules and banned gambling on horse racing at Happy Valley The governor, his wife and daughter were among the few spectators who actually turned up to the dismal following four-day race meeting, only to be confronted by a notice that read: “DIED: The Hongkong Races, aged 50, from an overdose of

And indeed, the power of the Jockey Club, Jardines and the Bank proved too great for Robinson and betting returned to Happy Valley. Ironically Robinson enjoyed a game of poker on most Saturday nights, at an establishment on Breezy Path.

英國國會曾商討有關香港的賭博法律事宜，香港那時的賭博條例完全不能執行，而歷屆港督每每有意無意地對此不聞不問。但是，羅便臣爵士認為自己有責任執行賭博法例，禁止賽馬賭博。羅便臣爵士、他的太太和女兒來到馬場觀奏，卻看到以下啟示 :

When he was invited to give a talk to the Odd Volumes Society, Robinson unfortunately chose to lecture on “samples of Irish wit and humour” and for two hours he bombarded his audience of distinguished academics, intellectuals, pedagogues and missionaries with bad Irish jokes. To wit, “Now Paddy is always either cracking jokes or heads" said Robinson, "so much so that it has been asked: ‘What articles used at dessert are most Irishmen like? Why, nutcrackers of course!” His excellency concluded: “Some of you may say, Sir William, there is no end to your wit,' to which l would reply, ‘Heaven forbid that I should be at my wit's end.’

There is a Robinson Road in Mid-levels and at one time there was another one in Kowloon, but both were named after a previous governor, Sir Hercules Robinson (1859-1867). Poor, unlucky Sir William Robinson was not honoured in this manner. He was, in fact, the only Victorian governor not to have a street named after him.■

8 May 1982: In a ceremony at Edinburgh Place, Governor Murray MacLehose bade farewell to Hong Kong after 11 years of service. MacLehose, who began his duty in November, 1971 and extended his stay four times, is the longest-serving governor in Hong Kong’s history and is considered the most transformative. 1982年5月8日：在任11年的香港總督麥理浩正式告別香港，在愛丁堡廣場舉行歡送儀式。麥理浩由1971年11月開始出任港督，四度延長任期，成為任期最長的港督之一，值得一提的是，他是香港最具影響力的港督。

nlike the classic Hitchcock thriller, North By North West, there is no imposing Mount Rushmore in this part of the New Territories. Still, this expansive northwestern region – which includes the satellite towns of Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun, along with numerous rural villages dotted throughout the landscape – offers plentiful delights for the intrepid visitor willing to invest a bit of time and effort to get there. Formed by the alluvial plains of Shenzhen and Shan Pui Rivers and framed in the background by several mountains including Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong’s tallest peak, this area is home to ecologically sensitive wetlands, muddy flats and beaches, mangrove swamps, rice paddies, and old walled villages interspersed with burgeoning developments. In stark contrast, looming across the border are skyscrapers of the Shenzhen metropolis. We offer a one-day itinerary that requires only public transport, which is eminently doable, with a bit of perseverance. Enjoy another fascinating aspect of Hong Kong.

Kat Hing Wai Walled Village 吉慶圍 Centuries ago, most of the New Territories was settled by village clans who built walled villages to congregate and defend themselves. Kat Hing Wai, located in Kam Tin, is one of the best-known and bestpreserved. Built over 500 years ago by the Tang clan, one of five major clans in the New Territories, the village was protected on four sides by thick walls (almost 18 feet deep) and one open gate. The village measures roughly 100 by 90 metres. The ancient village houses inside are long gone, replaced by densely packed “ding houses” – the modern village house prevalent in the New Territories, set in a grid inside the village compound. However, the moat outside and the guard houses have survived. About 400 people reside in the village, with many homes now rented to outsiders, a sign of changing times. There is a nominal tribute to get into the gate ($3) and a clan temple lies at the other end, offering a tantalising glimpse into the past.

Nam Sang Wai (near Yuen Long) 南生圍 (近元朗) An important wetland reserve crisscrossed by two small rivers, Nam Sang Wai is far removed from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. Popular with birdwatchers, hikers, cyclists, photographers and romantic couples, Nam San Wai offers unspoiled rustic scenery of mudflats, farms and fish ponds, languished rivers, tall reeds and mangroves and treelined paths. Start your journey where Nam Sang Wai Road joins the main road, either by bicycle or on foot and follow the river northwards. Photogenic spots abound along the route. The road turns back southwards at the junction with another river. Keep walking or cycling either along the road or on the path until you reach the famous Wedding Bridge for your obligatory photoshoot. A short distance further and you’ll come to Hong Kong’s only river ferry, a little sampan that carries passengers across a narrow river (maybe 30 metres) for a fee. You may choose to do that and return to Yuen Long or you can retrace your steps. What amazes is that amidst the tranquillity and rustic beauty, a glance in the other direction reveals the high-rise buildings of Yuen Long and the looming skyline of Shenzhen beyond.

這裡是重要的濕地保護區，兩條小河縱橫交錯，遠離香港喧囂。很多徒步旅行者、愛鳥人士、愛好騎車人士、攝影師乃至情侶，都喜歡來這裡，欣賞自然，蜿蜒的河流、茂密的蘆葦叢，紅樹林以及泥濘的林萌小路。從主幹道前往南生圍入口，可以騎車也可以步行，沿著河流一路向北。這一路可以拍很多照片。在河流交匯處繼續向南行進，直到著名的婚禮橋，這裡是眾多遊客選擇拍照的地方。繼續步行一小段路，您可以看到香港唯一的內河渡輪，一艘小舢板，將乘客帶到狹窄的河流對岸（可能是 30 米），是要收費的。您可以選擇乘船回到元朗，或是原路返回。在寧靜和質樸的美景中，您只需向另一個方向看，即可看到元朗的高樓大廈和遠處深圳若隱若現的天際線。

The Hong Kong Wetland Park and Mai Po Nature Reserve 香港濕地公園和米埔自然保護區

If ecology is your thing, you will want to visit the Hong Kong Wetland Park or the Mai Po Nature Reserve, both important wetland sanctuaries, as an alternative to Nam Sang Wai since it may be difficult to fit more than one of them in one day. As a permit is required to enter the Mai Po Nature Reserve, it is best to book an eco-tour through WWF who manages the reserve. The Wetland Park, which is located near the satellite town of Tin Shui Wai, is open daily but closes at 5pm for visitors. Both serve as important sanctuaries for a myriad of migratory birds as well as a haven for an abundant selection of butterflies, reptiles and other fauna.

Ha Pak Nai 下白泥 The coastline on the northwest boundary of Hong Kong along Shenzhen Bay (Deep Bay) is recognised as having the best sunset photo-spots. The best-known is in Ha Pak Nai, or more accurately in Ap Tsai Hang just before Ha Pak Nai. The shoreline, looking across to Shenzhen’s Shekou, is dotted with fish ponds. The shallow muddy beaches strewn with mangroves extend out during low tide, offering unparalleled sunset images combining the land, the shimmering sea, and the sky.

香港西北角沿深圳灣(后海灣)的海岸線，以擁有最佳的日落攝影點而聞名。其中以下白泥最為出名，或者更準確地說是下白泥的鴨仔坑。橫跨深圳蛇口的海岸線旁，魚塘星羅棋布。退潮時，佈滿紅樹林的淺泥海灘顯露出來，日落時分，這裡宛若一幅畫，波光粼粼的大海，縹緲的天際線，相互映襯，無與倫比。

From Yuen Long MTR Station, walk to Tai Fung Street, take the green minibus No. 33 and get off at Ap Tsai Hang. Continue walking along the path next to the river to reach the mudflats.

Hong Kong Gold Coast and Sham Tseng 香港黃金海岸和深井 After a day of sightseeing and walking, you’ll likely want to treat yourself to a nice dinner and a wind-down. Choose either the Hong Kong Gold Coast, a complex comprising a resort hotel, a retail plaza and a yacht marina, where several large yachts are berthed. Pick any of the restaurants in the plaza and enjoy a relaxed meal and stroll along the waterfront promenade to check out the marina, the yachts and the hotel nearby. Or, further down, you could choose to stop at Sham Tseng village and enjoy a hearty meal at one of the several famous roast goose restaurants. It’s a winner either way. From Yuen Long Station, take West Rail and get off at Tuen Mun Station. Take a taxi to Hong Kong Gold Coast or Sham Tseng or take KMB bus 52X from Kowloon.

Enchanting Park – Hong Kong Park

Among the city’s multitude of urban parks, for sheer solitude and relaxation, you can’t beat Hong Kong Park, a sprawling urban space between Central and Admiralty, nestled among the skyscrapers. Nicely landscaped, with a large children’s playground, the park contains the hidden treasure of a majestic aviary with a large collection of exotic birds. Chill in the park’s gardens or check out its historical buildings, including the Flagstaff House Tea Ware Museum. Enchanting Waterfront Walk – Promenade between Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay 陶醉於深水灣和淺水灣之間的海濱長廊

There are so many waterfront walks to choose from. Our favourite is the one between Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay, a 20-minute stroll full of visual treats. Start at Deep Water Bay, you’ll see luxury yachts and dinghies out on the water as you pass through a narrow channel past Middle Island. Ocean Park and its famed cable car ride stand out in the distance across the glimmering South China Sea. Before the path leads to Repulse Bay and its wide beach, you’ll have a clear and panoramic view of the sands, the luxury high-rise buildings behind and the mountains beyond. You may want to check out the Kwun Yum Temple complex at the end of the beach or enjoy a nice afternoon tea at one of the beachfront dining outlets or the grand ole Verandah on the main road above – notable for its famous afternoon tea set, a most enchanting occasion indeed. 有這麼多的海濱散步可供選擇。我們最喜歡的是在深水灣和淺水灣之間的一個 20分鐘迷人的步行充滿視覺享受。從深水灣出發，你會看到豪華遊艇和帆船在水上航行，通過狹窄的海峽，熨波洲就在對面。海洋公園的纜車在波光粼粼的海面上格外引人注目。到淺水灣及其廣闊的海灘之前的一段路，給您提供了觀賞海灘全景的角度，後面是豪華建築和眾多群山。此外您還可以在附近餐館觀音寺，或是去露台餐廳享用一餐下午茶，絕對是難忘又舒心的一天。

Enchanting Hike – Tai Tam Reservoirs

This is an easy walk if you start from Parkview on top of Wong Nai Chung Gap as the route is all downhill or flat. This delightful walk takes you through wooded hillsides framed by green mountains on all sides and tranquil reservoirs. Several stone arch bridges crossing the reservoirs are both architecturally beautiful and historically significant and are declared monuments. It’s a perfect expedition for the whole family or for couples. The walk ends at Tai Tam Road where you can go to Stanley, another idyllic village not far away, or back into town, both accessible by frequent bus. 從黃泥湧峽的陽明山莊開始步行，十分輕鬆，整段路程都是下坡路或平坦的。一家人或是情侶來這邊郊遊，穿過綠樹成蔭的樹林和寧靜平和的水庫，跨越水庫幾座建築獨特的石拱橋，將是一次完美的體驗。終點是大潭路，您可以前往不遠處的另一個田園詩般的村莊——赤柱，或者乘巴士回到市區。

Enchanting Seafront – Quarry Bay Promenade

We suggest you visit this other favourite of ours during the early evening. The waterfront promenade, which stretches from Quarry Bay to Sai Wan Ho in eastern Hong Kong Island, offers a quieter and more serene view of Victoria Harbour at night. Starting from Quarry Bay, a pet-walking area before the promenade is perfect for dog lovers. The promenade extends past Tai Koo Shing in the background, alongside a retired fireboat, the Alexander Grantham, and continues to Sai Wan Ho. The night views of Kowloon and the mountains behind as well as the narrow Lei Yue Mun pass ahead can be mesmerising. Enjoy a relaxing drink or dinner at one of the alfresco outlets in Soho East before you head back. 我們建議您在傍晚去到這裡。海濱長廊由鰂魚涌伸展至香港島東部的西灣河，在晚上可欣賞維多利亞港的景色，少有人知十分安靜。如果您從鰂魚涌出發，會看到很多愛狗人士在這裡遛狗。這條長廊以太古城為背景，沿路還會看到葛量洪號滅火輪展覽館。九龍的夜景、身後的群山，以及狹窄的鯉魚門，都令人著迷。記得在附近的蘇豪東餐廳吃點東西，放鬆身心。

Enchanted Island – Peng Chau 陶醉於坪洲島

There are so many delightful islands to choose from, although a few are well-trodden by tourists. Less so is Peng Chau, a quaint and homely island just off east Lantau, not far from Discovery Bay. A few thousand residents live here at a pace a notch down from even Chueng Chau or Lamma. It won’t take long for you to catch the same vibe. There is an easy and enjoyable heritage trail, while a modest scamper up to the highest point, Finger Point, rewards you with 360-degree view of Lantau, Hong Kong Island and South China Sea. You can unwind and enjoy a simple but delicious seafood meal at the local restaurant on the way back. Tai O Village 大澳

From Tung Chung, you can take a bus to Tai O, a quaint fishing village on the southwest part of Lantau where original houses built on stilts over water still stand. The idyllic village manages to preserve the local’s fishmen’s way of life over the centuries. There are also boats available for hire in search of the famous Chinese Pink Dolphins, an endangered species native to the waters nearby. ictoria City Restaurant has been a culinary institution since it was established in the 1980s, and is best known for its exquisitely prepared dim sum, quality seafood, and refined Cantonese dishes. Through the years, the restaurant has garnered numerous local and international awards, becoming a well-known gathering place for celebrities of all stripes as well as attracting discerning gourmet tourists from abroad. To k e e p a b r e a s t , Vi c t o r i a C i t y R e s t a u r a n t recently underwent an extensive renovation and repositioning, introducing an array of new Cantonese cuisine that not only caters to its loyal clientele, but also appeals to the younger, affluent generation of discerning foodies and diners. The restaurant adopts a retro-chic look while retaining its spacious setup and 180-degree view of the harbour. In addition to introducing innovative dishes that make use of quality ingredients from all over the world, notable changes including greater emphasis on presentation for camera-toting diners, availability of singleportion dishes, and providing a more bespoke dining experience. We were there to sample the new tasting menu. But we couldn’t resist a little of its famous dim sum first, which was not included. The three chosen were Deep-fried Taro Puff with Foie Gras ($55), Steamed Minced Pork Dumplings ($48) and Shrimp Dumpling with Assorted Vegetables ($48). Dim sum is served only at lunchtime. If you are in the mood, the dim sum here stacks up against any in town. On to the tasting menu. We began with an appetiser combination of Char-grilled Dried

Pufferfish ($128), the lightly char-grilled pufferfish coated in secret seasoning, and Deep-fried Rice Crackers with Salted Egg Yolk ($98). A fine slowboiled soup is obligatory in any refined Cantonese meal, and ours was the Supreme Soup with Conch and Ginseng ($208/head) which was flavourful and savoury. A trio of seafood dishes came next. The first was Sea Garoupa and Radish in Supreme Soup ($220/ head) in which fresh garoupa is cooked with daikons in a rich stock. Then came the Braised Supreme Trio (South African Abalone (6 heads), Goose Feet and Chinese Mushroom ($268/head), an always highlyprized delicacy. Last was Deep-fried Prawn with Wasabi and Mango Aioli ($248/head) – the fruit and prawn combining for a juicy and zesty bite. We kept going. Two meat dishes were served: Slow-cooked Beef Ribs in Red Wine Sauce ($108/ head) in which the beef ribs are fried to golden and slow-cooked with red wine, and Roasted Crispy Chicken ($220/half portion) – this original recipe calls the chicken to be coated in egg-white and left to air overnight before being infused with special seasoning and bathed in boiling oil. The gourmet meal ends with a light dessert, Braised Pear with Dried Tangerine Peel and Peach Resin ($68/head), which was fitting. The tasting menu we sampled is priced at $1323 per person, or you can order the dishes individually as priced. When it comes to the finest Cantonese fining dining, Victoria City Restaurant continues to set a high bar. You should give it a try.■

That was certainly the case when we had the opportunity to visit Loong Yuen for a sumptuous wine-paired meal. For this dining occasion, we wanted to highlight the visual appeal of the dishes, all of which were all Roasted Whole Spanish Iberico Pork 香烤原件黑豚肉

immaculately prepared and presented. The adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words” is never truer here and so we always allowed the camera to enjoy the first bite, and we want to accord our readers the same pleasure. The dishes served were a mix of seafood and meats. The seafood is best served with semi-dry, white wines such as Pinot Grigio or Chablis. We were also pleasantly surprised that medium-bodied Italian wines chosen were also excellent fits for the pork, lamb and oxtail dishes. The meal ended with three desserts: Baked Egg Tart($50) and Deep fried Egg Dough with Fresh Ginger($60) and Sweetened Bean curd Pudding flavored with Ginger($98), which wrapped up the meal nicely. Pica Pica

The vibrant dining scene in Sheung Wan recently welcomed an exciting addition – Pica Pica – Spanish for “a little of this, a little of that”. The contemporary Spanish tapas bar is operated by the Epicurean Group, one of the city’s leading dining groups, and helmed by Spanish chef Edgar Sanuy. Pica Pica offers a small-plate menu inspired by regional Spanish cooking methods and drawing on Chef Sanuy’s own culinary experience throughout Europe and Asia, using healthy ingredients for its dishes. Pica Pica also serves a nice collection of Spanish beers and wines plus its signature authentic Sangria recipes. We sampled a slew of the menu’s tapas offerings, which are perfect for social gatherings or for just chilling out. We started with the Tomato Bread with Arbequina Extra Virgin Olive Oil ($30) together with “Rusa” Potato Salad ($65), a traditional Spanish salad. Next came Slow-cooked egg, Morcilla, Potato Foam ($85, lunch only) and the Iberico ham croquette ($15/piece) deep-fried golden brown. They were followed by Octopus Galician Style on Potato “al caliu” ($130), Spanish Lazy Omelette with Morcilla & Choizo ($65), Spanish potato omelette medium rare ($55), and Bikini Sandwich ($90) of grilled chicken. Several paellas are available, we chose Black Paella Rice ($115/ small and $195/bigger), which comes with prawns and clams. We managed two desserts: Catalan cream foam, vanilla ice cream ($50) and Dark Chocolate, hazelnut, extra virgin olive oil, salt ($70). It’s amazing how much food one can consume while chatting and nibbling. What sets Pica Pica apart is both its friendly and relaxed ambience and the healthy, tasty food. We are sure that Pica Pica will make its mark in Sheung Wan soon enough. Give it a visit if you are anywhere nearby.

Dong Lai Shun 東來順 told the mutton is exclusively supplied to Dong Lai Shun, as attested by the soft and tender brisket. Check out the delightful sour and spicy dishes at Dong Lai Shun – perfect for the season.

Dong Lai Shun, one of the best Northern Chinese cuisine restaurants in Hong Kong, is offering its Spring menu showcasing zesty and refreshing sour and spicy dishes. The restaurant has a venerable pedigree as the original Dong Lai Shun was established in Beijing over a century ago, serving authentic Beijing dishes including the famous roasted Beijing duck. For his spring menu, Head Chef Sze Chiu-kwan has crafted a list of sour and spicy dishes using Chinese vinegar, chilli, and seasonal ingredients. Chef Sze’s concoctions tend to be lighter than traditional Szechuan spicy dishes, with the sourness and spiciness less dominating for the palate, which help bring out the flavours of the underlying ingredients.

The dishes sampled included three starters: Chilled Beef Fillet & Bean Jelly Noodles with Sour and Spicy Flavour ($298) in which lightly poached beef fillet is served with a mixture of lychee vinegar, chopped apple and chilli and jelly noodles; Marinated Sour and Spicy Flavor White Bitter Melon ($138) – a light and refreshing dish; and Chilled Sour and Spicy Flavor Ox Tripe ($138) which is quite flavourful. For main dishes, we had the signature Poached Mandarin Fish with Sour and Spicy Vegetables ($528) in which the fish is poached in fresh tomatoes and preserved vegetable soup, the poaching allows the meat to retain its tender texture. If you are in the mood for an all-you-can-eat quality Japanese buffet, then Tono Dakiya, located in Tsim Sha Tsui, may be just the place. The spacious restaurant, which can seat up to 250 guests, specialises in both lunch and dinner buffets. On offer is a wide selection of Japanese cuisines, spanning sashimi, sushi and sushi rolls, teppanyaki, grilled sushi, vegetables, and meat items, noodles and hot pots, tempura, and specialty and a la carte items. A full complement of desserts and house sakes are also included in the package. Given the abundance of choice, it’s almost impossible not to overeat. Highlights of our orders included Assorted Sashimi of toro, yellow tail, salmon, scallop, jumbo and sweet shrimp, whelk and shima aji. Our trip to Club Med Guilin started with a smooth and relaxing ride on the HighSpeed Rail from West Kowloon to Guilin. The heart of the dining and social activities is the Atelier, which houses a lounge, a theatre space, an international buffet restaurant, a large bar area, and more. There are other dining outlets including the noodle bar, our favourite, where you can order the locally famous Guilin Noodles as latenight snacks. What makes Club Med tick, though, is their staff and the unique way they serve guests. Called GO (Gracious Organisers), the international staff come from countries all over the world. The general manager of the resort is called a Village Chief. Together, they immerse themselves in serving their guests. In plain terms, guests dine, drink, play, and party with the staff, day and night. There are nightly performances and shows put on by the GOs themselves and led by the village chief himself. Their enthusiasm is infectious.

The other outing is a visit to a tea plantation for which Guilin is famous. The picturesque terraced tea plantations dotting the valley slopes are great for de-stressing. We even picked our own tea leaves straight from the trees, which were dried on site and brought home as a souvenir.

Censers were popular in the Han dynasty. This goose-shaped censer is life-like. The back of the goose body is latticed, allowing smoke to rise from it. The censer is similar in function to the more well-known boshanlu-style censers from the Han period, but its form is very different. Incense was burned not just for the aroma, but also for practical reasons, such as acting as an insect repellent, and to purify the air. he Hong Kong Sevens, the city’s premier sporting event, which was held on 5-7 April last month, was once again a smashing success, with 120,000 rugby fans jammed into Hong Kong Stadium over three exciting days of non-stop rugby action, entertainment and fun. Fiji – adopted by many Hong Kong fans as their own home team – won the tournament again, their 19th success in 44 tournaments. This year, the Sevens was graced by the presence of several sporting legends who came as goodwill ambassadors for Laureus, the official charity of HK Sevens, an international organisation based in London that uses the power of sport to transform the lives of children and young people and to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage. A large cadre of sporting legends from all over the world have joined Laureus as ambassadors, giving their time and effort to promote these highly worthwhile causes. This year, schoolgirls from Laos were invited to Hong Kong, along with children with special needs from local schools, to attend the Sevens and take part in other activities. Among the Laureus ambassadors attending the Sevens were Michael Johnson, one of the greatest track athletes of all time, and Li Xiao Peng, the Chinese gymnast who won four Olympic gold medals. Michael Johnson, known for his upright running style and nicknamed “The man with the golden shoes”, is still the only athlete to have won the 200m and 400m events at any Olympics – in 1996, a hugely difficult task by any measure. He held the record for 200 metres and 400 metres for 12 and 17 years respectively until they were broken by Usain Bolt in 2008 and Wade van Niekerk of South Africa in 2016. He was part of the world record-winning 4x400 metres relay team in Stuttgart in 1993 – a record that still stands today. When reminded that he has never lost a race in all 16 major championship races over his career – no silver, no bronze – Johnson quipped “I have nothing against silver or bronze, I just don’t like them myself”. Johnson, who has pretty much fully recovered from a recent stroke, recounts that “during recovery, it took me about 15 minutes to walk the 200 metres around the hospital block, a distance I could normally run in under 20 seconds. But I used the same focused and dedicated approach as in athletics to help with my recovery”. Johnson enthusiastically lauds the efforts of Laureus to use sports to help change disadvantaged children worldwide. It’s fitting that Johnson is bringing that indomitable spirit and dedication to his personal recovery and the worthy cause of Laureus – a truly great champion indeed.
