e welcome you to Hong Kong and to CityLife, the monthly magazine for visitors to Asia’s World City. Summer vacations are in full swing and the city is ready to entertain visitors with a slew of activities, events and attractions. For starters, check out all the things to do in Hong Kong Summer Fun, which highlights exploring cool neighbourhoods, bargainhunting at summer sale promotions across the city, indulging in delicious local eats, and visiting the city’s major attractions such as Ocean Park and Disneyland Hong Kong. If you have kids, check out the SummerFest@Central Harbourfront, which continues through the summer featuring a slew of family-friendly activities by local organisations. In the twenty two years of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, its largest island, Lantau, has been transformed from quiet backwater to thriving infrastructure hub, anchored by the Hong Kong International Airport and the newly opened Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge. Despite its development, Lantau remains verdant and green, and is now a major destination for visitors. Our feature story highlights some of the attractions on North Lantau, including Noah’s Ark, a delightful and educational theme park, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car and Ngong Ping Village, and the Big Buddha, plus the burgeoning satellite town of Tung Chung. Please turn to page 10 for all the details. Summer in Hong Kong is hot and humid, making it the perfect time to head to the beach. It also means it’s time to roll out our annual showcase of the city’s finest beaches. Whether you are looking for white sand, sparkling water, easy-to-access venues or just a fun beach to hang out and relax, our article covers them all. That’s on page 14. A distinctive feature of Hong Kong is the diversity of music performances it offers. Whether it’s Chinese opera at the new Xiqu Centre, a dance programme by Hong Kong Dance, or a delightful concert by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, there is plenty to watch and listen to. Please check out our Calendar section on page 4 for more scheduled activities. Looking for an expert recommendation of the best places to visit? This month in our new feature, My Best Hong Kong Pick, a representative of The Society of Golden Keys of Hong Kong – an association of chief concierges – suggests places to visit or things to do. Hong Kong Sinfonietta McDull. my very very very best
On the set of the film McDull, The Alumni, Yip Wing-sie and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta met Brian Tse and Alice Mak, as Wing-sie played herself in the 2005 film, where she was an outstanding graduate at the same kindergarten year as McDull. As with many onset romances, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and McDull quickly formed a relationship, which grew organically into a “music project” idea, in which McDull and his friends meet classical music.

Hong Kong’s annual major summer programme for families and all ages, the SummerFest transforms the Central Harbourfront Event Space (CHES) into a mega stage for a series of free-to-public summer events. This year, SummerFest has created for local residents and tourists an extraordinary outdoor experience comprising 30 wide-ranging events based on four themes: Smart City, Arts & Culture, Sports and Fitness, and Carnival. Entering its 30th edition, the Food Expo this year comprises the Trade Hall, the Gourmet Zone, and the Public Hall, together featuring more than 1,560 exhibitors from around 20 countries and regions. Last year’s Food Expo drew 510,000 visitors while its Trade Hall attracted more than 21,000 trade buyers.

Arthur Hacker paves the history of one Hong Kong’s busiest roads. 亞瑟·克赫在香港最繁忙的道路上，與你緬懷過去

hen Lord Palmerston, the British Foreign Secretary, heard that Captain Elliot had founded a British colony in Hong Kong in January 1841 he was not pleased. He wrote an angry letter to Elliot in which he described the new colony as "a barren rock with hardly a house upon it." He had expected something rather grander. Hong Kong Island had no towns and no roads. The small land population lived in a few remote and isolated fishing villages, the largest being Aberdeen which in Cantonese is called Heung Gong Tsai (little Hong Kong). Elliot named the original British settlement Queenstown. lt was later renamed Victoria after Britain's young queen. lt is now known as Central District. Footpaths connected the villages. One of these rough tracks ran along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island. Viewed from the hills, this wiggly little track, which was used as a towpath by local junk captains, was said to resemble the drawstring that Chinese ladies tied around their waists. This is why, according to Dr Eitel, an early Hong Kong historian, it was known as Kwan Tai Lo, which he translated as Petticoat String Road.

ln 1841 the Royal Engineers laid a new road on top of the towpath. With a bewildering lack of imagination they named this new highway Main Street, but in March 1842 the road was officially renamed Queen's Road in honour of the British monarch. ln the Victorian era many important buildings stood between St John's Cathedral and the Clock Tower at the junction of Pedder Street. On the corner where the Landmark is today, (15 Queen's Road Central), stood the Hong Kong Hotel, the first luxury hostelry in the colony. Nearby was the first headquarters building of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. It had a massive octagonal dome that stood 100 feet above the ground, A new headquarters building was erected in 1935 that was the largest building east of Suez at the time. The present bank headquarters at 1 Queen's Road Central was designed by Sir Norman Foster and covers the site of the original bank and a bit of the old City Hall, a beautiful building designed by the French architect M.Hermite. This cultural centre was financed by public donations

當時的香港島沒有道路、更沒有市鎮；而 在 一 條 僻 遠 的 漁 村 里 —— 「 香 港 仔 」 ， 只 住 有 少數的居民，人煙稀少。艾列萊本來稱這區作 ‘ Queenstown ’ ( 直譯為：皇后的市鎮 ) ，及後 被大英的年青女皇易名為‘ Victoria ’ ( 維多利 亞 ) ，最後改名為我們現時熟悉的「中區」。 小徑與各村落相互連接，從山上俯瞰，可見 其中一條崎嶇的山徑橫跨港島北面，彎彎曲曲的 迂迴著；這條小徑據說曾被本地的船夫用作「曳 船路」 ( 沿河岸拖船時所行的路 ) ，與女士們系在 腰間的腰帶相似。敬此，香港早期的歷史學者 Eitel 博士稱這條小路為「裙帶路」，英文亦直譯 為‘ Petticoat String Road ’ ( 裙子帶的路 ) 。 在一八四一年，皇家工程師在曳船路的盡處 開闢了一條新的小路，因茫無頭緒 , 只好稱它為 「大街」；而在一八四二年三月 , 該路以英國君 主之名，重新命名為Γ皇后大道」。
and housed a museum, a library and the Theatre Royal, where Queen Victoria's son, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, watched a naughty play performed by the Amateur Dramatic Club called Notting Hill. The Prince had opened the City Hall a couple of days earlier, He was Hong Kong's first royal visitor. On the opposite side of the road, below the cathedral, was another exquisite building called Beaconsfield Arcade. It only came to be built because a Mr Emmanuel Belilios had donated a thousand pounds for the erection of a statue to Lord Beaconsfield. Lord Beaconsfield politely declined the offer, so Belilios named the arcade after his hero. Belilios is best known for using a camel to commute between the Peak and Central. With the opening of the Peak Tramway, the beast became redundant and in a fit of melancholia committed suicide by jumping over a cliff. Another interesting building was the Ice House that stood at the junction of Battery Path and Ice House Street. ln spite of its name, it did not manufacture ice. The ice was harvested from icebergs by The American Company and shipped to Hong Kong. The crop arrived in great blocks and was stored in the Ice House. At one time the company was owned by a dubious entrepreneur called George Duddell who ran an illicit craps game in the building. He was also a dishonest auctioneer who once illegally sold a ship to himself at a ridiculously low price... and got caught. ln spite of this chicanery there is a street in Central named after him.■

n the late 1980s, the Hong Kong Government decided to replace the overcrowded Kai Tak Airport with a new one on reclaimed land at Chek Lap Kok, just off the sleepy but vast island of Lantau. Remote and sparsely populated, the island was only accessible by ferry to a couple of small villages on the southern shoreline, requiring a lengthy bus journey along steep and twisty roads to get to the few other villages. How times have changed! Today Hong Kong International Airport is widely recognised as one of the finest and busiest in the world. Together with a truly impressive list of transport infrastructure works connecting it to the city – an expressway, the Airport Express, three architecturally stunning bridges, plus a new satellite city – Tung Chung, the North Lantau development is arguably the crown jewel of Hong Kong’s infrastructure works, a city already known for its modern and ultra-efficient built environment. Despite the impressive development, North Lantau remains green, its varied natural beauty largely untouched, making it a wonderful place to visit. Be sure to set aside a day to visit North Lantau and enjoy all its beauty and man-made wonders.

Noah’s Ark
諾亞方舟
Tucked underneath the Tsing Ma Bridge is Ma Wan Island, which connects Tsing Ma and Kap Shui Mun bridges. Site of an old fishing village, the island is home to the distinctive Noah’s Ark theme park, as well as Park Island – a secluded residential development, a tranquil park, and the village itself. The main attraction is Noah’s Ark, a full-sized replica of the biblical ark. The Old Testament story of Noah, a virtuous man selected by God to build an ark to house the animals of the world so they would be spared the wreaking of his fury upon a sinful people, is an oft-told Biblical story. This ark replica, a wooden-exterior structure measuring 130 metres by 30 metres, comprises five levels, including a resort hotel on the deck level. Life-size replicas of various animals welcome the visitors to the ark, which sits amidst a lush landscape and is framed by the iconic Tsing Ma Bridge looming above – an unforgettable vista and a prized Instagram spot. The ark offers several exhibits that are entertaining and educational, particularly for kids. discovery’ galleries to satisfy curious minds; and the Ark Life Education House offers interactive games that encourage kids to enjoy and appreciate life’s precious moments. Noah’s Ark also showcases a Solar Tower that features Hong Kong’s first solar telescope. The 350mm-diameter telescope, housed in a separate tall building, projects the sun’s image via a reflecting surface. An accompanying exhibit teaches all you need to know about the sun and the planets. The ark’s Harvest Restaurant, located on the ground floor, is another pleasant surprise. It offers a sumptuous dinner buffet including a BBQ Station, all set to gorgeous views of the bridge above and the beach alongside. Access to Ma Wan is restricted. The best way to reach it is by ferry from Central Pier No. 2. Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car, Ngong Ping Village, Big Buddha &Po Lin Monastery
昂坪360，昂坪市集，天壇大佛及寶蓮禪寺 Named one of the ten best cable car rides in the world by CNN, the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car delivers breathtaking views of Lantau Island and the China Sea. The ride passes over a sea channel before its steep ascent up the mountain, the spectacular vista of the airport coming into full view. Off in the distance, the 45-km Hong Kong– Zhuhai –Macau bridge snakes its way across the mouth of the Pearl River before descending into the sea for its tunnel section. Even at 25 minutes, the ride is over too soon, so mesmerising are the views. Catch the cable car near the Tung Chung MTR Station. The cable car brings visitors to the enchanting Ngong Ping Village, where they can stroll through the culturally themed hamlet, its main street adorned with souvenir shops, arts and crafts, and a variety of eateries. Three mini-theatres offer multimedia presentations and live performances. The iconic Big Buddha is just adjacent. At 34 metres high, it is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. Climb the 286 steps to get a close-up view of the massive statue. The Po Lin Monastery is an important Buddhist monastery in Hong Kong. Visitors can tour its pleasant garden, visit the Grand Hall, which houses over 10,000 Buddha statues, and enjoy a vegetarian meal there.

Tung Chung
東涌
Tung Chung, Hong Kong newest satellite town, has grown rapidly with the burgeoning of the airport. Today, it serves as gateway to villages and beaches in South Lantau, via buses, but has also become a tourist destination itself. Top among its attractions is Citygate Outlets, Hong Kong’s best-known outlet mall. After a recent extension, the 75,000-square-metre air-conditioned outlet mall is home to more than 150 international brands, many offering deep discounts on quality products. The mall also features many regional and international restaurants, and a six-screen cinema complex. For those interested to see historic relics, Tung Chung Fort, established in 1832 as the headquarters of a naval battalion in the Qing Dynasty, is well worth a visit. The fort has been well-preserved through the years as it was put to other uses after being abandoned by the Qing. Take Lantau Bus 3M, 11 or 34 from Tung Chung town centre. If you want to catch a glimpse of local daily life, you should visit Fu Tung Plaza, a shopping centre attached to a public estate run by Link REIT. Located in the town centre, it includes a wet market where the locals shop for fresh vegetables, meat and seafood for their meals.

Sai Kung beaches 西貢海灘
Sai Kung Peninsula and its neighbouring islands, long considered Hong Kong’s emerald playground, is home to the territory’s most scenic coastline. With powdery white sand and clear blue water, its beaches are some of Hong Kong’s most beautiful and pristine. The locations require some legwork to reach, but that only adds to the enjoyment of their unspoiled charm. 西貢半島及其鄰近的島嶼，一直被認為是香港的綠色天然遊樂場，擁有全港最好泳灘。粉狀白色沙灘和清澈湛藍的海水，是香港最 美的原始海灘。海灘需要步行一段距離才能到達，但這只會讓遊客體會最純粹的美麗，不失為一種享受。
Long Ke – visual treasure 浪茄 ——視覺寶藏 A beautiful secluded beach framed by spectacular geological formations and sparkling waters, Long Ke is accessible by a moderate hike from the east dam of the High Island Reservoir – bring your own food and water as there are no provisions and it’s not tended to – but you’ll have all the privacy you could wish for. Tai Long Wan (Big Wave Bay) beaches – pristine and untamed 大浪灣海灘 ——質樸而野性 Further up the coast from Long Ke along Maclehose Trail Section 2 await the famous four Tai Long Wan beaches, arguably the crown jewels among Hong Kong’s beaches. Ham Tin and Sai Wan are the most frequented, both good for surfing and near-shore swimming. Tai Wan is popular with surfers for its high waves, while the smaller Tung Wan is less visited. Overnight camping is popular. To get there is a 90-minute hike from Sai Wan Pavilion or you can hire a boat from the public pier in Sai Kung Town. Admire the beauty, but swim with care as these beaches are also unattended and the waves can be strong. It’s the closest to a tropical paradise that Hong Kong offers.

South Lantau beaches 大嶼山南岸海灘 Hong Kong’s largest island is home to several beautiful beaches along its southern coast, facing the South China Sea. Easily accessible by ferry to Mui Wo from Central (Pier 6) and then buses 1, 2, 3 or 4 to the beaches. 這個位於南部海岸線上的香港最大島嶼擁有幾個美麗的海灘，面向南海。從中環乘乘渡輪前往梅窩，然後乘1、2、3或4號巴士前往海灘。

The long stretches of the Upper and Lower Cheung Sha Beaches offer smooth sands and calm waters for swimming. And you can try your luck digging for clams all along the seashore – you’ll be surprised how many juicy big ones you can find. Watch the setting sun over cool drinks at one of the beachside restaurants – a most relaxing way to cap a sun-soaked afternoon.

A kaito ferry (boat) from Sai Kung town centre, the island is home to part of the Hong Kong Geopark, featuring a real tombolo and two especially clean beaches: Kiu Tsui Beach and Hap Mun Bay Beach, both with some facilities. Lamma has become a popular tourist attraction but while the main village may be crowded, it doesn’t take long to find space and calm on some of its beaches, especially Lo So Shing Beach on the far side of Sok Kwu Wan, also easily reachable from Yung Shue Wan, the other popular spot. ong Kong foodies always appreciate a restaurant with any view of the iconic Victoria Harbour. Given that many of the city’s high-rise buildings are designed to accommodate restaurants to offer just that, we are spoilt for choice. We have to admit, though, that the views at Le 188°, located on the top floor of the Harbour Grand Hotel in North Point, took us by surprise – an unimpeded and panoramic vista of the harbour and surrounding skylines of both Hong Kong and Kowloon. And the food is excellent too. We were invited to try out Le 188°’s Summer Tasting Menu. We couldn’t have picked a better time as a glorious golden sunset was about to grace the horizon. Upon entry, we were greeted with a breathtaking 270-degree view of the harbour stretching from east to west – you have to be there to appreciate its magnificence. Le 188° offers French fine dining with a ‘modern culinary’ accent, taking advantage of Hong Kong’s ability to source fresh and quality ingredients from almost anywhere in the world. The décor of Le 188° is elegant, contemporary and expansive with tall ceilings and fulllength glass windows that seem to magnify the harbour views. The restaurant is spacious; its layout ensures all tables have a view, and an outdoor terrace is perfect for drinks and taking in the fresh air. There is also piano music and lounge singing to complete the dining ambience. Our tasting menu ($798 per person) and the winepairing choices ($180 for 3 glasses or $260 for 5 glasses) are both reasonably priced. Le 188° offers a full à la carte menu as well as semi-buffet lunches – a selection

of appetisers and soup from the buffet and a choice of main courses ($418 per person including desserts), and a lovely afternoon tea set ($438 for two persons on weekdays). Our meal started with Martini Crab Salad with a choice of sparkling cocktail. Then came Roasted French Asparagus, with Iberico ham, parmesan cream and parsley oil – the succulent asparagus is excellent, especially paired with a 2016/17 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Lobster Crusty Ball came next, the deep-fried ball seasoned with smoked paprika mayonnaise and lobster powder. A Zubrowka Vodka Lemon Sorbet pleasantly cleansed the palate. The meal resumed with two delightful entrees: Roasted Cod Fish in Banana Leaves, with sweet potato and green curry sauce and paired with a 2016 Suavia Soave Classico from the Veneto region of Italy, and Iberico Pork Tenderloin with Brussels sprout and blackcurrant sauce, paired with the weighty 2016 Ceretto Piana Barbera d'Alba, from Piedmont. The delightful dinner ended with Tiramisu and Hazelnut with coffee ice cream and a glass of Giffard Limon Giallo, a refreshing sweet Italian liqueur. As we enjoyed excellent wines, delicious food and lively conversation, the glittering lights around the harbour came alive, showcasing the city’s full glamour. Perched atop the Harbour Grand, Le 188° delivers an unforgettable dining experience, perfect for almost any occasion. We highly recommend it.■

o mu, a Japanese Omakase restaurant tucked away on a quiet side street in busy Tsim Sha Tsui, offers an intriguing and delightful fine-dining experience, one that combines the pleasures of exquisite food and well-curated wines. We chose Nomu – which means “to drink” – for its unique offerings: premium and unique sakes and wines paired with top-quality seasonal seafood and other high-end ingredients sourced directly from Japan, and prepared by experienced chefs who are passionate about serving the finest sushi and Kaiseki cuisine to discerning guests. Nomu is the creation of its owner Ray Cheng, a former architect whose passion to create an exceptional dining experience for his guests is palpable. Nomu’s setting is cosy, understated, and intimate, with a maximum seating of 18 guests. Its décor is distinctly Japanese: simple, elegant and pleasing. A sushi bar allows you to watch the chefs prepare each dish with consummate skill. The essence of Omakase – which means eating dishes selected by a chef – is in trusting the chef to tailor and select a balanced meal with the best ingredients available for the day. Doing it well requires not only mastering the techniques of preparing sushi, sashimi and Kaiseki cuisines which can take years to perfect, but also an extensive knowledge of the famed Japanese fish markets, their suppliers and the availability of the best seasonal products. Nomu also takes great care in choosing the finest sakes and wines to pair with the dishes. Its menu features over 100 sakes, including rare and by-request-only bottles. That means that dining at Nomu delivers the rare experience of a combination of food and wine that lasts long after the last bite and sip. Nomu offers three dinner options: Tasting Menu ($880) for smaller portions; Prix-Fixe Menu ($1,180), which includes set courses; and Chef’s

Table Experience ($1,880), comprising the ultimate no-menu dining experience. It also offers several lunch options ranging from $280 to $580. For our meal, we chose the Chef’s Table Experience, accompanied by a nice, cold sake from a discerning sake maker from Japan, with its own proprietary water source, the essence of fine sakemaking, we were told. The dishes came without pause, starting with a combination of delectable cooked starters that included grilled oyster, prawn, deep-fried fish and the always delicious uni, or sea urchin. Nomu painstakingly seeks out the best sea urchin from throughout Hokkaido, as witnessed by a dish featuring three kinds of uni served on a tray. Nomu’s Omakase meal is notable for its deliberate and artful preparation. A beautiful plate of five seafood items – sweet shrimp, tuna and scallop – is particularly camera-worthy, as is a collection of sushi items. The wagyu beef cubes are succulent and tender, matched with a perfect seasoning. The coup de grace of the meal, though, must be the toro tuna, which practically melts in the mouth – an amazing sensation for the palate. By the time we had finished an ice cream dessert, we’d consumed more food and wine than we realised, leaving us sated and contented. Dining at Nomu was a total treat. We strongly recommend it if you are looking for a memorable bespoke Japanese dining experience where wine and food blend perfectly together.■

Holt’s Café
The newly opened Rosewood Hong Kong, the city’s latest ultraluxury hotel, located on Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, is the talk of the town. Part of Victoria Dockside, the area’s new art-and-design neighbourhood, Rosewood Hong Kong connotes luxury and opulence. The same goes for its F&B outlets, including Holt’s Café, named for Holt’s Wharf, former occupant of the hotel site. Holt’s Café, which serves as the hotel’s all-day dining venue, is spacious and richly decorated in the style of European grand cafes. It offers Hong Kong’s beloved traditional Cha Chaan Teng culture, but in a more upscale and modern setting. The restaurant features a large, bright open kitchen which serves a diverse mix of favourite Cantonese dishes with international influences. Holt’s menu offering includes local-style breakfast plus a continental spread; dim sum, barbecued meats and noodles for lunch; elegant afternoon tea sets, and à la carte specialty dishes for dinner. For our lunch, we tried a combination of dim sum dishes, old Hong Kong favourites and Western specialities. Dim sum included the classic Haw Gow ($60), Sesame Prawn Toast ($60) and the always delicious Barbequed Pork Bun ($60). The super tender roasted Barbeque Pork ($160) is a must too. Specialty dishes included Sweet and Sour Prawns ($350) , Baked Portuguese Chicken ($220) and Wine Braised Beef Cheek ($390), all excellent selections. The dessert served was Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Infused Baba ($80), which nicely complements Holt’s superb selection of teas, including its signature Hong Kong Milk Tea ($80) and Yuan Yang ($80). Look for a chance to check out this magnificent hotel and enjoy a lovely lunch at Holt’s Café – it’ll be a highlight of your visit to Hong Kong.

La Rambla
La Rambla, recently opened at the ifc mall, has become the go-to place for superb Catalan-inspired cuisine. In particular, the restaurant offers a mouthwatering Sunday Brunch, together with free-flow Champagne, sangria and other quality alcoholic drinks. This generous 5000-square-foot restaurant welcomes with a modern, airy and chic décor and boasts a terrace overlooking the harbour. Led by Executive Chef Ferran Tadeo, a Catalan who apprenticed under some of the world’s finest Michelin-starred chefs and worked in iconic restaurants in Barcelona, Washington D.C. and Hong Kong, La Rambla offers a large selection of tapas, meats and seafood dishes, and a range of paellas. The Sunday Brunch is served from 12 noon to 3pm. Priced at $550 per person, it includes a free-flowing Good Open Bar ($350 per person) brimming with Champagne, Oak Smoked Bloody Mary, sangria, wines and an array of gins, vodkas and whiskies. Connoisseurs of fine libation may wish to opt for the Great Open Bar ($1,300 per person), which pours a range of aged liquors and Krug Champagne. The food is sumptuous and, aside from the buffet-style cured meats, cheeses, anchovies et al, each dish is delivered to the table. We were wowed by La Rambla’s classic tapas, which include Bikini – truffle, jamon and cheese, and Jamon Croquetas in which the Iberico ham is superb. For grilled meat items, the Grilled Tiger Prawn is a must. The Squid Ink Paella is also excellent. For mains, we chose the Josper Grilled Turbot, although the Traditional Suckling Pig Segovian Style was
tempting. For desserts, the Helado Nitro Ice Cream Sundae – stirred and prepared tableside – is very popular. For an utterly relaxing Sunday Brunch of gourmet food, refreshing drinks and stress-free ambience, La Rambla is the place to be. Dada Bar + Lounge, located in the Luxe Manor Hotel in bustling Tsim Sha Tsui, is fast becoming a favourite for locals seeking a more eclectic F&B and music experience. Dada’s décor belies its name, derived from Dadaism, the early 20th century European avant-garde movement. Instead, there is ornate Parisian plush furniture and fixtures, replete with French lamps, wallpapering, chairs and sofa, paintings and carpets. A brass-lined bar welcomes guests upon entry, across from an elevated stage for music performances. The seating is cosy and relaxed, with tables spaciously scattered around. Clearly though, the music is the main draw, augmented by a smart menu of snacks, pizzas, burgers and sandwiches plus a nice collection of cocktails, wines and beers. Dada offers nightly music performance ranging from jazz, cover band, acoustic pop to lounge music by talented local musicians, plus special performances by well-known local bands and singers. Local legends such as Danny Diaz, Johnny Lau, and the Champs Band have all performed here. The headliner for our visit was Impulz, a highly thought-of Filipino cover band, and they were outstanding. The male lead’s vocal range is truly impressive, reminiscent of Arnel Pineda before he was discovered by Journey to become their lead singer. The food and drinks served are more than adequate to go with the music. Some of the signature snacks we tried included Classic Nachos ($98), Crab Rangoon Fat Bombs ($98) and Margherita Pizza ($108). Dada offers a Happy Hour Wine by the Glass from 4 to 9 pm offering buy-one-get-one-free at $88 a glass. Be sure to sample the cocktails, including the Dali’s Iced Tea and Juliet ($98 each). For an enchanting evening of good music accompanied by fine food and drink, Dada is an excellent choice.

Censers were popular in the Han dynasty. This goose-shaped censer is life-like. The back of the goose body is latticed, allowing smoke to rise from it. The censer is similar in function to the more well-known boshanlu-style censers from the Han period, but its form is very different. Incense was burned not just for the aroma, but also for practical reasons, such as acting as an insect repellent, and to purify the air. Centre for Heritage and Arts The revitalised Central Police Station compound, the largest heritage project in Hong Kong, has opened its doors to the public as Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts. The CPS compound comprises 16 historic buildings, including three declared monuments (Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison), on a 13,600-square-metre site in the heart of Central. An international-grade art gallery and an auditorium have been added to contribute to the adaptive reuse of the site. The heritage site includes new art galleries and the Parade Ground and Prison Yard. The "Hall of the Cosmos" showcases the Universe from near to far, travelling from the solar system that we are living in, to the stars, Milky Way and galaxies further away and exploring the science and evolution of the universe all along the way. We opted for the Lymphatic Massage ($1,580 for 90 minutes) plus Chinese Herbal Ball Full Back Thermotherapy ($780 for 20 minutes), in which a heated herbal medicine ball is applied to the back to relieve pain and stress. The therapist was super-friendly and highly trained. The treatment is soothing as the body gradually relaxes under the gentle kneading of the muscles. The effect of the treatment is notable and immediate, causing the body to feel much more alive and alert. The resting area is tranquil and unhurried. SPA at MTM serves desserts and soup that change seasonally to cater to the body’s needs. We had Oolong Tea Pudding and Fig and Pear Tea during our rest.
