e welcome you to Hong Kong and to CityLife, the monthly magazine for visitors to Asia’s World City. The ongoing global Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic is affecting Hong Kong, as almost everywhere in the world. As we go to print, Hong Kong has the virus largely under control, with only a handful of cases reported daily and some restrictions recently eased. Nevertheless, masks are required to be worn in all public spaces and a number of other social distancing measures are in place. The city, though, remains mostly open, including all the hotels, the city’s transportation systems, shopping malls, retail shops, cinemas, and restaurants. For prudency, though, we do ask that you contact your concierge for more details on the latest updates and restrictions. This year, the 2020 Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival, the city’s premier epicurean event is back, with a twist. Held digitally for the first time, the festival is chock-full of programmes that foodies and serious wine connoisseurs can visit online to enjoy and participate in: a plethora of attractions that include special offers from over 100 wine merchants, online masterclasses such as curated wine seminars, interactive cook-along workshops, a platform promoting attractive dine-in offers from over 500 restaurants in the city, and other hot topics and events. Please visit our cover story on Page 6 for details of this unique online event. November offers the perfect weather to roam Hong Kong’s great outdoors and explore the territory’s fascinating landscape. That is especially true if you are a student or lover of architecture and building styles. Hong Kong has much to offer from its historic development from a smattering of fishing villages to a modern global city gleaming with skyscrapers, under the wing of the British Empire. Events are gradually returning to the city as the pandemic eases here. One event you should really try to attend is the Freespace Jazz Fest at the West Kowloon Cultural District. Great Outdoors Hong Kong 2020-2021

This autumn and winter, be part of the Great Outdoors Hong Kong campaign and explore all the stunning and diverse natural beauty the city has to offer! Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the campaign, themed ‘A Sense of Place’, showcases 10 recommended hiking trails that are introduced by five local personalities and expressed from the perspective of the five senses; Sight, Hearing, Taste, Smell and Touch. The trails have been chosen to suit beginner to advanced hikers and are great for family, group and solo excursions. The campaign also features a cycling trail that allows visitors to explore the local heritage culture along new towns and old villages between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun in the New Territories. As autumn/winter is peak trail running season, the campaign also highlights several high-profile events such as Oxfam Trailwalker Hong Kong as well as other local trail running races.

香港郊野全接觸 2020-2021 今年秋冬，歡迎大家透過“香港郊野全接觸”活動，探索這座城市所有動人心弦的多樣化自然美景！活動由香港旅遊發展局主辦，主題為“五感體驗．發現香港”，透過五位本地人的專訪故事，從五種感官角度（視覺，聽覺，味覺，嗅覺和触覺）分別介紹 10 條登山遠足路線。路線多種多樣，既有適合入門者的短途路線，也有滿足資深遠足者需要的長途路線，適合家庭，團體和單人遊覽。這項活動亦有介紹自行車路線，讓遊人沿途探索元朗至屯門一帶的新市鎮及舊村落，參觀當地的文化遺產。此外秋冬也是越野跑的好時節，本次活動包括多項備受矚目的賽事，如樂施毅行者，還有其他本地的越野跑比賽。

Extraordinary Racing Experience—Eat, drink, and enjoy thrilling horse racing experience at the Wins Café

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has launched an ambitious effort to upgrade its Off-Course Betting Branches (OCBBs) to help enhance punters’ experience and to better serve the public and different customer segments. Upgrades include more and larger TVs and electronic information displays plus more seating areas, among others. In addition, HKJC is introducing a breakthrough format which extends the same dining experience to racing fans outside the racecourse, called Wins Café, at its North Point, Electric Road Branch. The branch features a 1970s deco style ‘cha-chang-teng’ which seats 100 persons and offers authentic Hong Kong-style food and beverages. Wins Café is also equipped with comprehensive racing and sports watching facilities, big TVs and video wall to broadcast diversified racing and sports channels to seamlessly integrate a unique dining and entertainment experience.

Freespace Jazz Fest

Music lovers can enjoy a weekend of great sounds and the diversified Hong Kong jazz scene at the “Freespace Jazz Fest”, taking place in and around Freespace and the iconic Art Park in the West Kowloon Cultural District. The diverse three-day programme showcases ticketed events featuring wellknown local musicians including Ted Lo and Eugene Pao, Angelita Li Sings Billie Holiday – Feat. Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra , and the experimental collaboration Jazz Imaginarium – a unique, multisensory immersive experience with jazz musicians and visual artists creating a black box installation with improvised sound and imagery. The 2020 edition, which is being held online for the first time, and with participation by hundreds of wine merchants and restaurants, aims to be just as enticing as real-life events with a prolific line-up of webbased activities taking place from 11 November to 15 December. This year, the festival offers participants the excitement of discovering new and classic wines, time-tested and innovative gourmet recipes, attractive gastronomical offers, and participation in online interactive experiences from the comfort of their homes, and at their leisure.

The Festival’s programme comprises four enthralling epicurean categories. Browse and discover choice selections, weekly hot deals and recommendations from over 100 wine and spirit merchants. This platform showcases their highlighted drinks and provides a shortcut to their online platforms for enquiry and orders. The festival is streaming more than 30 enlightening programmes on its online platform, from noon till evening during the three festival weekends (21-22 November, 28-29 November and 5-6 December). Opt to follow the chef live and interact with the chef and other participants. And, whether you are a novice wine drinker or a sommelier in waiting, there is the right wine talk just for your enjoyment. These talks offer absorbing and engaging topics that range from themed wine-tasting classes to featured guest speakers. Guest speakers will share the secrets of shaking up the perfect cocktail, so you can host like an accomplished mixologist. Participants can watch a live demo loaded with tips and interactive dialogue to share ideas with the audience. You can also watch playback of all these programs at your convenience.

The most prominent buildings left from pre-colonial times are mostly Chinese temples and a few ancient village compounds, especially Hakka walled villages. This 400-year-old walled village located in Sha Tau Kok in the northeast New Territories preserves aspects of the ancient Hakka way of life. The walled village comprises more than 210 houses, including three ancestral halls. It is accessible by a hiking trail or by special buses on weekends and public holidays. This village located in Yuen Long District was established during the late Ming Dynasty by the prominent Tang Clan. The thick Qing Dynasty walls warded off pirates and were fortified during a brief rebellion against the British in 1899. The village is still in use, and fully occupied, but visitors may walk around the compound. Built in 1912, this neo-classical landmark is located in the heart of Central. For 66 years it was Hong Kong’s Supreme Court, the city’s highest judicial authority, except briefly during WWII, until damaged structurally from construction of the MTR. Built in 1844, Murray House served as officer’s quarters in the Murray Barracks. The classical-style building was in use for various purposes until it was dismantled brick by brick in 1990 upon redevelopment of its original site and put into storage. In 2002 it arose again in Stanley to house an array of shops and restaurants. Built between 1841 and 1925, the 16 historic colonial buildings comprised the former Central Police Station, Central Registry Building and Victoria Prison. After a substantial preservation and redevelopment effort, the compound is now a spacious art and heritage centre, and one of the city’s premier heritage landmarks. This imposing edifice built in 1921, the building was built as a residence of Ho Kom Tong, brother to Robert Hotung, one of the most prominent Chinese businessmen/ philanthropists in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The elegant Edwardian mansion with its Greek-style columns was acquired by the Mormon Church in 1960, serving as its local headquarters until 2004 when the Hong Kong Government took it on. Tong Laus 唐楼

Prominent around southern China at the turn of the 20th century, the distinctive tong lau style is a 3 or 4-storey tenement building built with expansive balconies that served as living or working quarters for the local Chinese population. Quite a few such buildings remain today, many preserved for their heritage value. 唐樓風格在20世紀初尤為重要，是華南地區的特色，這種三、四層的廉價公寓樓通常帶有寬敞的陽台，是當地華人居住或工作的主要地方。今天仍有不少建築物保留下來，其中多為歷史建築。

Built in 1920, this Ling-nam style four-storey tenement cluster comprises three inter-connected buildings. On acquisition by the government in 1990, they were distinctively painted bright blue, orange and yellow. Together they form a residential and community services compound, including the House of Stories, a living museum plus tenement flats. The influential German Bauhaus style architecture, popular in the mid-20th century and known for its clean lines, regularity and functional, minimalist design, influenced many Hong Kong buildings in the 1950s to 1970s. Its aractical focus was perfect for a city looking for inexpensive, easy-to-build, functionally driven structures that met its burgeoning demand for building space.

The 1982 HSBC building is arguably famed B r i t i s h a rc h i t e c t N o r m a n F o s t e r ’s m o s t celebrated legacy. Touted at the time as the Hong Kong’s most expensive office building, the aluminium and glass structure is designed to provide external views for every one of its occupants. Legend has it that the building can be dismantled for removal and reassembly. This autumn and winter, the Hong Kong Tourism Board is running the Great Outdoors Hong Kong campaign, themed ‘A Sense of Place’. This features 10 hiking trails, a cycling trail, plus a slew of trail running events. Here, we bring you three iconic hikes that will imprint lasting images of Hong Kong’s great outdoors on your memory (and your social media feed)!

Lamma Island 南丫岛 Easy hike; around 1.5 hours 輕鬆易走；約1.5小時

Lamma Island is a favourite weekend destination for locals and visitors alike. Start your hike at Sok Kwu Wan. Stroll through the narrow streets of the quaint village and follow the path to Yung Shue Wan, passing Tin Hau Temple and ascending to the highest point of this hike before Hung Sing Ye and Tai Wan To beaches come into view on the other side. Treat yourself to a bowl of yummy tofu dessert at Ah Po Tofu or a relaxed meal ranging from dim sum to tapas at one of the many eateries in Yung Shue Wan before heading back to the city from there. 南丫島是本地人和遊客最喜歡的周末度假勝地。從索罟灣開始，沿着古樸的鄉村小道漫步，前往榕樹灣，途經天后宮，而後即可登上山丘。沿途經過阿婆豆花店可坐下來品嚐一碗特色豆花，或者在榕樹灣眾多的餐館裡嘗點西班牙小吃和點心，然後再從碼頭回到市區。

MacLehose Trail Sections 1 and 2 麦理浩径第一及第二段 Difficult hike; around 6 hours 難度頗高；約6小時

Sunset Peak 大东山 Challenging hike; around 5 hours 極具挑戰；約5小時

A real close-to-nature hike – pristine environment, expansive reservoir, sandy beaches, hamlet villages and beautiful scenery. Enjoy the great vista along the High Island Reservoir East Dam in MacLehose Section 1 with its fantastic rock formations. Follow the trail uphill before descending to Long Ke Wan and onwards along the undulating trail to reach the white sandy beaches of Sai Wan and Ham Tin Wan – widely considered Hong Kong’s most beautiful – before heading up and over to Pak Tam Au.

Hong Kong’s third highest mountain is much loved by hikers eager to soak up amazing views of the island and the South China Sea or catch a spectacular sunrise or sunset. Start from Pak Kung Au on Tung Chung Road for an arduous climb up to Sunset Peak. After admiring the panoramic views and the native flora, you’ll descend eastwards, passing Lantau Mountain Camp, with huts dotted along the hillside, then Yi Tung Shan and onto Nam Shan with its expansive picnic area, before reaching Luk Tei Tong Watch Tower – an early 20th century relic – and finishing up at Mui Wo.

這裡是十分親近自然的遠足徑——原始自然、廣袤水庫、純樸的海灘，古樸村莊和過目難忘的風景。沿麥理浩徑第一段欣賞萬宜水庫東壩的美景，尤其是岩石景觀。隨後沿着小路上山到達山峰，下山即可到達浪茄灣，再前行就可以看到西灣和鹹田灣，這兒沙灘潔白細幼，堪稱香港數一數二最美麗的海灘。然後爬上西灣山，最後下山到北潭凹。

ocated at the JW Marriott Hong Kong, Man Ho has earned its reputation as one of the finest Cantonese restaurants in the city. The outlet went through a major facelift a year ago that has further consolidated its exalted status. This month, Man Ho is offering a newly created wine-pairing dinner – with a twist. Which is that the wines selected drive the pairing of dishes, not the other way around. That gave us all the excuse we needed to pay Man Ho a long-awaited visit. The newly renovated outlet is modelled on a classic garden and draws inspiration from traditional Chinese architecture blended with modern design touches, including tasteful use of natural elements such as marble, wood and metal and Chinese landscape motifs. The remodelling allows greater privacy for both its main dining area and its private rooms, a welcome feature for discreet diners. In keeping with the new outlook, Man Ho has also revised its menu under Chinese Executive Chef Jayson Tang. The Hong Kong native has created a selection of innovative Cantonese dishes that feature fresh vegetables and herbal ingredients sourced from local farms. The wine-pairing Man Ho Deluxe Menu ($1,580 per person), created by Chef Tang and Sommelier William Ma, represents a collaborative effort. The menu begins with Ma selecting six premium varieties of champagne, sake and wines and then Chef Tang crafting an eight-course menu to match the flavour and characteristics of the wines. The dinner kicked off with the chilled Taittinger 2013 Millésimé Brut Champagne, its citrus and fruity flavour nicely balances the taste of the Deepfried Mashed Lobster Stuffed in Mashed Taro. Next was the first of two abalone dishes to be served. The

Steamed Fresh Abalone with Chrysanthemum is paired with Shichiken Kaikoma Junmai Daiginjo, a premium sake and an intriguing combination. The abalone is smoked at the table with the chrysanthemum tea leaves, its flavour enhanced by the lightly sweet and smooth texture of the sake. Quite a pairing, we must admit. Next was a 2017 Domaine Michel Niellon, Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy, which accompanied Pan-fried Canadian Scallop with Carrot Sauce. The medium-bodied Chardonnay is refreshing; its taste nicely opening up to the scallop flavour. To cleanse our palates, we sipped on a velvety smooth Garoupa Broth with Mandarin Peel and Lemon Leaf. A real treat was next – Sauteed Miyazaki Wagyu Beef with St. Georges Mushrooms. The richly flavoured and marbled beef is paired with a pinot noir – a 2015 Domaine de la Vougeraie, Savignyles-Beaune ler Cru “Les Marconnets”, another Burgundy. This dish contrasts nicely with the next pair, Braised South Africa Dried Abalone with Black Mushroom and Vegetable, which comes with a dry, mature 2001 Chateau LaForge St. Emilion. We wrapped up the sumptuous dinner with a delightful 1994 Weingut Abteihof Wehlener, Sonnenuhr, Auslese (Riesling) paired with Salted Egg Yolk Crème Brulee, an innovative and delicious dessert, plus Chinese Petit Fours. We were fully sated. As expected, the wine pairing dinner at Man Ho proved a memorable and delightful dining experience. If you are in the mood to indulge in an exquisite meal or looking to celebrate a special occasion, we highly recommend the deluxe wine pairing menu at Man Ho. Book early.■

ucked away in Sha Tin, adjacent to the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is Sha Tin 18, a popular Chinese restaurant located at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The spacious establishment, which serves both Cantonese and northern Chinese cuisines, is known for its show kitchen set-up and its large terrace, which is perfect for casual outdoor dining. On the theme of “dining in the kitchen”, the restaurant features four show kitchens, each offering an authentic specialty, ranging from noodles to barbecue, and dumplings to dim sum, plus specialty regional dishes from China. Besides the large main dining room, Shatin 18 offers five private dining rooms that seat from six to 36 guests, ideal for business or social gatherings. The décor of Shatin 18 – the work of Steve Leung, a well-known local designer – is contemporary but with traditional elements. The ambience is casual, smart, and relaxed; the outdoor terrace is inviting, especially on these cooler autumn days. We were there to sample some of Shatin 18’s signature dishes, including its Peking duck and its barbecue pork with rice. We got started right away with Traditional Peking Duck ($848/whole for three courses). The duck is carved expertly tableside and served. The First Course ($628/whole; $398/half) is the traditional main course – Carved Skin, Breast, Leg Meat with Skin, Cucumber, Leek, Soya Bean Paste, Pancakes. The meat is tender, and the skin practically melts in the mouth. The Second Course

($168/whole; $128/half) is Wok-fried Minced Duck, Iceberg Lettuce, and the Third Course ($68/person) is Duck Soup, Cabbage, Beancurd – all delicious. We then had Stir-fried Prawns, Crispy Fish Skin, Salted Egg Yolk Paste ($368); the prawn is succulent, and the egg yolk paste is an inspired match. The next two dishes were: Stir-fried Cod, Spring Onion, Wild Mushroom Paste ($398) and Tossed Mustard Greens, Beancurd Sheet, Shallots ($178). With the meal in full flow, we tucked into Flambé Rose Wine Barbecued Pork, Lard Rice ($98/per person), a longstanding local favourite, but with a modern twist. The tender roast pork is flamed at the table as a final touch. Then the succulent meat is sliced and placed atop a steaming bowl of rice. You then flavour it by adding the lard and aged soy sauce. Do not be put off by the lard – it is clean and carefully prepared by the kitchen staff. This dish needs to be ordered a day in advance and is available for private room booking for a minimum of six persons. We finished this delightful meal with four desserts: Chinese Preserved Beancurd Cheese Cake ($65), Red Date Madeleine, Grand Marnier Custard Sauce ($65), Chinese Wine Chocolate Ice Cream ($45/ scoop) and Hua Diao, Preserved Plum Sherbet ($42/ scoop) – all a bit different, all good! Our meal at Sha Tin 18 was highly enjoyable and appetising. You may call it high-end comfort food, but for us it is just a good old-fashioned delicious Chinese fare in a most pleasant setting. We enjoyed it and we highly recommend that you give it a try as well.■

Since it opened in 2017, Hexa, the Cantonese restaurant located at the end of Ocean Terminal, has firmly established itself as one of the city’s dining hotspots thanks to its unrivalled waterfront location and its excellent food. We were there to enjoy HEXA’s exquisite dim sum lunch, along with some of its signature dishes. We started our lunch with some favourites: Steam Shrimp Dumplings in Bamboo Charcoal Wrapping ($80); Steamed Salmon Roe Dumplings ($68); Steamed Dumplings with Truffle, Wild Mushroom ($58) Baked BBQ Pork Buns Topped with Buttered Crust ($62) and the popular Wagyu Beef with Black Pepper in Puff Pastry ($88). A further round of dishes included Braised Chicken Feet with Abalone Sauce ($88); Shredded Turnip in Puff Pastry ($58); Golden Crispy Roulade with Foie Gras and Shrimp ($72); Spring Rolls with Shrimps and Sea Urchin ($78); Crispy Rice Rolls with Cuttlefish ($68); Stewed Honeycomb Tripes with “Sichuan” Sauce ($68); Deep Fried Taro Pastry Stuffed with Seafood ($50); and Pork Dumpling with Abalone in Pepper Broth ($108). For good measure, we then sampled several of Hexa’s signature dishes: Roasted Iberico Pork with Honey Sauce ($328); the excellent Smoked Chicken with LongJing Tea Leaves ($338); Seasonal Baby Vegetable Shoots in Chicken Stock with Fresh Euryale Ferox ($228); Braised Pearl Rice with Masutake Mushroom, Morel And Sea Urchin ($328) and the prized Jumbo Spanish Red Prawns Served with Inaniwa Udon ($408 per person). SHU K 蜀客

You can always count on Elite Concepts, one of the city’s most innovative dining groups, and its founder Paul Hsu to break new ground with enticing and intriguing dining formats. That is certainly the case with Shu K, which marks the second collaboration between Hsu and famed Sichuan chef Deng Huadong. Located in the swanky K11 Musea shopping mall, Shu K serves a more refined version of Sichuan cuisine from the province’s Mianyang and Chengdu areas. While many of the dishes still use Sichuan chillies and Hua Jia or Sichuan peppercorn as their key flavouring, their usage is more subtle and nuanced. This is reflected in Chef Deng’s menu, which showcases classic Sichuan dishes with an added modern touch, using regional and international ingredients and cooking techniques. We tried Shu K’s Special Set Menu ($680/person, minimum of 2 persons), a tasting menu for discerning guests. The meal starts with three classic Sichuan appetisers: Mouthwatering Chicken, Sichuan Style – an old yummy standby; Sliced Cucumber Tossed with Garlic and Chili; and Spicy Seafood Medley. Doubled-boiled Fish Maw and Chicken Soup, a nutritious and tasty soup, is next. Then a real treat – Sautéed Hairy Crab with Rice Cake, which is available only during the autumn hairy crab season. The crab is stir-fried, and the slightly spicy sauce helps accent the flavour – a nice touch. Or you can order the Hairy Crab in Mala Sauce, which is equally tasty and comes with a bigger kick. Sea Cucumber with Scallion is next – a generous portion of sea cucumber nicely braised, followed by Kung Pao Prawn, Shu K Style – the prawn is infused with a subtle chili flavour. We wrapped up the meal with Sautéed Pea Sprouts with Freshwater Crabmeat, Pork Wonton in Red Chili Oil, both classic Sichuan dishes, superbly prepared, and a refreshing dessert, Sichuanese Ice Jelly.

We should mention that Shu K is now offering a select crab menu during the hairy crab season. And its K Bar serves an extensive range of delightful cocktails and drinks. Why not indulge yourself with an enlightened and tasty meal that satisfies and explores different parts of your palate? Cruise, the rooftop restaurant and bar atop the Hyatt Centric Hotel on the North Point waterfront, is launching a menu of modern Asian cuisine with popular dishes from Southeast Asia and North Asia. With its convenient location and expansive harbour views, the restaurant continues to win fans. The arrival of a new dining concept certainly helped entice us to visit again. The restaurant is spacious, bright, and airy. The terrace, smartly arranged with comfortable couches, is perfect for after-work drinks or evening cocktails. The lively menu encourages sharing and hearty eating – a smorgasbord of Asian comfort foods perfect for gatherings of friends and family. Cruise also serves an extensive collection of cocktails, wines and beers to go with the food. Dishes we tried included Seasonal Oysters ($500/12 pieces) – delicious raw oysters that go perfectly with champagne or a light white wine; Hiramasa Kingfish ($180) – a nicely seasoned sashimi; Kings Tartare ($320) – made with flavourful King salmon; Korean Broccoli ($100); and yummy Chicken Satay ($140/6 pieces). More sharing plates came next. The Cheeky Massaman, M4 Australian (350g) ($300) is a real treat – the marbled and juicy meat is tender and packed with flavour. Changes Pork Belly Ssam ($160) is also tasty, as is Sambal Fried Rice ($60), Wok-fried XO Cauliflower ($60), and stir-fried Morning Glory ($60). For desserts, we shared a whole Tropical Cruise Alaska ($180), intended for 2 to 4 people. Cruise offers a slate of themed cocktails named after various Asian cruise destinations. We tried Bauhinia Blanc, a gin cocktail named for Hong Kong; Chilly Sakura, a refreshing sake drink with a Tokyo appellation; and Phang-nga Butterfly, for Phuket, each priced at $108.

STATUE SQUARE 皇后像廣場 The story of a famous Central Location. 一段中環歷史故事 1

square marks the centre of many great cities: London has Trafalgar Square and Hong Kong has Statue Square. Tourists may note that it contains only a single, lone statue, that of the former chief manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Sir Thomas Jackson. The bank, which owned the square at the time, erected it in 1906. Before World War Two, the square was crowded with statues, mainly of royalty, and was in fact originally named Royal Square by Sir Paul Chater, the great property developer who founded Hong Kong Land. Chater descended from Armenian princes and was an ardent royalist. The first statue he presented to the good people of Hong Kong was a sculpture of Queen Victoria's son, the Duke of Connaught. Unfortunately they had no idea where to put it and for over a decade it mouldered in a mat shed until at last it was erected in Statue Square in 1902. When the noble duke revisited Hong Kong in 1907, his statue was moved to the bottom of Pedder Street, so that when he stepped off the boat at Blake Pier he would be confronted by his own graven image. The South China Morning Post of the day expressed the sincere hope that the duke would survive the shock. During his visit the duke unveiled two royal statues, one of King Edward Vll, the reigning

monarch, and another of the then Prince of Wales, who later became King George V. Sir Paul donated the sculptures of Edward Vll, and John Bell-lrving, a fellow director of Sir Paul's Hongkong Electric Company, donated that of George V. These bronzes joined a statue of Queen Victoria that had been donated by the public in 1896. Above this statue was an ornate canopy that resembled something between the Albert Memorial in London's Hyde Park and a gigantic wedding cake. The public later provided a statue of Queen Alexandra, the wife of King Edward, and Sir Hormusjee Mody commissioned a sculpture of Queen Mary This rich Parsee merchant was a close associate of Sir Paul. He also paid for most of Hong Kong University. ln 1923, a seventh statue appeared. lt was of a popular former governor, Sir Henry May. On the day he arrived to take up his governorship he was attacked by a Chinese madman armed with a revolver who missed shooting His Excellency from a range of three feet. Unperturbed, Sir Henry proceeded at a stately pace in his sedan chair to his inauguration ceremony at City Hall. Sir Henry who had formerly been Governor of Fiji, explained why he was attacked: "He mixed up Fiji with South Africa (feichau in Cantonese) and thought I was the Governor

By the 1930s, Royal Square had come to be known as Statue Square. During the occupation of Hong Kong in World War Two the statues were shipped off to Japan, leaving the square statueless. After the war, the United Kingdom Liaison Mission in Tokyo reported the presence of a statue of Queen Victoria dumped on the Osaka army arsenal's scrap-heap together with "a bronze statue of a man in a frock coat, bare headed, domed forehead and moustache" and "a pair of bronze lions, one with its mouth open." Jackson and the bank's lions can be seen in the square today. Queen Victoria was not so lucky. Her monument mouldered away in a garage for eleven years before it was stuck on a pedestal in Causeway Bay's Victoria Park from where she still glowers furiously at the trafﬁc. Today, Statute Square is used mostly by those in transit to and from work in Central, except on Sundays and public holidays, when Filipina domestic helpers transform the square and adjacent Chater Street into a mini-carnival of dancing, music and lively gatherings, adding a colourful slice of life to Hong Kong.■

29 November 1975 Kowloon Station, The Kowloon Canton Railway terminus in Tsim Sha Tsui was closed permanently. The station was demolished in 1978 to make way for the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Only the station ’ s Clock Tower still stands, to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. 12 November 2006 The historic Star Ferry Pier in Central at Edinburgh Place was decommissioned after 48 years of service, replaced by Piers 7 and 8 of the new Central Ferry Piers 300 metres further out. Today, only Pier 7 is used by the Star Ferry.

Censers were popular in the Han dynasty. This goose-shaped censer is life-like. The back of the goose body is latticed, allowing smoke to rise from it. The censer is similar in function to the more well-known boshanlu-style censers from the Han period, but its form is very different. Incense was burned not just for the aroma, but also for practical reasons, such as acting as an insect repellent, and to purify the air. Combining aesthetics, practicality, and philosophy, censers are of high artistic and historical value. His artistic language is deeply influenced by the strong and heavy style by French expressionist Georges Rouault in his late period. Duan combines surrealism and elements of ancient Chinese murals to develop a unique pictorial style which is both raw and mysterious. ‘Signifiants de l’informel 2020’ at Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery 16 Oct - 15 Dec Art Informel refers to an art movement of the 1940–1950s that includes all the abstract and gestural practices developed in France and in Europe parallel to American Abstract Expressionism. In the aftermath of World War II, artists attempted to break from the traditionalism of École de Paris and the cold formalism of geometric abstraction. Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware 茶具文物館

Originally the home of the commander-in-chief of the British forces, the museum houses a huge collection of tea ware in Hong Kong's oldest surviving colonial building. Tai Kwun

Centre for Heritage and Arts The revitalised Central Police Station compound, the largest heritage project in Hong Kong, has opened its doors to the public as Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts. The CPS compound comprises 16 historic buildings, including three declared monuments (Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison), on a 13,600-square-metre site in the heart of Central. An international-grade art gallery and an auditorium have been added to contribute to the adaptive reuse of the site. The heritage site includes new art galleries and the Parade Ground and Prison Yard. Hong Kong Space Museum

Hall of the Cosmos and Space Exploration Covering a total area of 1,600 square metres, the "Hall of the Cosmos" and "Hall of Space Exploration" house a hundred new exhibits, of which about 70 percent are interactive. 文化專訪

西九文化区逐步成型与谭兆民先生的对话 Paul Tam, Executive Director of Performing Arts at West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, shares with CityLife his perspectives on the role and the city. 西九文化區管理局表演藝術行政總監譚兆民先生向《東方之珠》的讀者分享他對錶演藝術以及西九文化區的看法。 I was born here, spent my formative years in Canada, and then worked in the US, but Hong Kong has been my home again for more than 20 years now. I’ve worked in performance arts management all my life including the Hong Kong Ballet and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. The experiences there have served me well. With the support of the boards and the stakeholders of both organisations, I was able to restrategise the directions of the organisations, getting everyone aligned, and rebrand our programmes to a wider audience. I am so excited to head up the Performing Arts Division for WKCDA. I jumped at the opportunity when it presented itself, to be able to help bring world class quality and holistic performing arts experiences to the people of Hong Kong. My main roles are to oversee the strategic development of the venues, manage operations front and back of house, and deliver a slate of diverse, quality performing arts programmes. It certainly keeps me busy. We have fantastic state-of-the-art facilities designed and built for the future, and it’s a big portfolio! The Xiqu Centre serves as a hub to preserve and innovate Chinese opera – a heritage art form; Freespace is an incubator for contemporary and experimental music where we aim to push artistic envelopes. Together with the adjacent outdoor spaces, including Art Park, the site is perfect for outdoor festivals. The Lyric Theatre Complex under construction will host a variety of dance and theatre programmes. Plus, we will enjoy a lot of synergy through crossfertilisation with other cultural venues like M+ and Hong Kong Palace Museum. In the performing arts area, our goal is to curate the highest quality of performing arts to reach people from all walks of life. West Kowloon Cultural District operates for the people of Hong Kong. Our facilities allow us to deliver a variety of performing arts experiences that we hope will meet everyone’s interests. With the facilities we have and our capability for world-class programming, I hope to help Hong Kong to become a world-class cultural hub. As a major focus we curate our own programmes. That includes, for example, bringing in artists like Sakamoto and Wayne MacGregor, hosting the Experimental Chinese Opera Festival, and the Freespace Jazz Fest in November, which will feature local jazz musician powerhouses. In the end, to me, being successful means cross-fertilising different art forms across different audiences – perhaps a more mature audience watching a contemporary dance show or a younger audience taking in a Cantonese opera at Xiqu Centre – with everyone able to expand their horizons. I would love to see that happen. I love Hong Kong so much, and there is so much to like – great food, of course, and I love the crowds and the connectivity and humanity they emanate. The city is just so efficient and functions so smoothly. Best yet, I love the Hong Kong’s can-do spirit, always willing to try something new and willing to come together for solutions. It’s the backbone of our success.

我出生於香港，童年在加拿大度過，曾在美國工作，後來回到香港，已經在這裡生活了20多年。我一生都從事表演藝術管理工作，包括香港芭蕾舞團和香港管弦樂團。這些經歷使我受益匪淺。在兩團的支持下，我選擇重新制定組織的發展方向和戰略，重塑我們的項目，吸引更多觀眾。我很高興能領導西九文化區管理局的表演藝術部門。希望憑藉這個機會，能為香港市民帶來世界級高質素的表演藝術。我的主要職責是負責研究場館的發展戰略，管理前台和後台的運營，並統籌一系列多樣、高質量的表演藝術節目，工作內容繁多又忙碌。我們擁有一流設備和舞台，這是一筆很大的投資！戲曲中心是保護並創新戲曲這種傳統藝術形式的樞紐。自由空間是當代表演藝術的孵化器，我們希望藉此推動藝術領域的發展。加上相鄰的空間，如藝術公園，也非常適合舉辦戶外活動。正在興建的演藝綜合劇場未來會用於舉辦各種舞蹈表演和戲劇節目。此外，我們也會與其他文化場館如 M+ 和香港故宮文化博物館等互相合作，帶給觀眾巨大的協同效應。在表演藝術領域，我們的目標是策劃高質量的表演，讓各行各業的人們都可以欣賞。西九文化區是為香港人建造的，希望憑藉我們的設施和能力，可以為每個市民提供欣賞表演藝術的機會。我們是有能力展出世界一流節目的，我希望能協助香港成為世界級文化中心。值得一提的是，我們有很多自己策劃的節目，比如邀請 Sakamoto 和 Wayne MacGregor 等藝術家來這裡演出；舉辦小劇場戲曲節；以及將於11月舉辦的自由爵士音樂節，屆時將有當地的爵士樂手登台演出。對我而言，最希望看到不同的受眾對不同的藝術形式進行相互交流——也許是成熟的觀眾在觀看當代舞蹈表演，或者是年輕的觀眾在戲曲中心欣賞粵劇，擴大自身視野。我很樂意看到這種畫面。我非常愛香港，有太多值得喜歡的地方——美食肯定算是一個；還有這裡的人，他們身上散發出來的人性和彼此間的互動交流很吸引人；以及這座城市生活高效還能保證正常運轉；最棒的是，我愛香港的進取精神，一直樂於嘗試新事物，並願意為解決問題而共同努力，這是我們成功的基石。

It allows their fish to be caught wild, so to speak, before you eat them.

I love the outdoors and the sea. I love hiking, swimming and fishing. I have a marine licence so sometimes my friends and I hire a small motor boat and go boating and fishing.
