He also shares his secrets for the perfect listing: flawless staging, tactical advertising and an incredible amount of time and energy. With experience comes great mentorship. Gervasi provides his clients with expert advice on everything from first-time buying to fair property assessments and ideal listing prices. “Honesty is the best policy. I tell my clients if the price they’re looking to list at is unrealistic. I spend a lot of time and money on my listings, so I want to put my clients in a position to sell,” says Gervasi. “I would rather do a good job at market value and get it sold than have it sit.” To be sure, this mentality is behind Gervasi’s number of referrals, which account for nearly 95 per cent of his business. One Vaughan charity is making autism interventions more accessible with the help of an incredible team. Ellen Contardi is the chair of the board of Waves of Changes for Autism, a nonprofit organization that distributes assistance to families in need Written By Rebecca Alberico

A New wAve of Hope

T

here are times in life when we are drawn to a particular vocation, not because we are personally touched by a cause or crisis, but because a force greater than us knew we’d be up for the challenge. As fate would have it, Ellen Contardi was called to a career of service in her community. The Vaughan mother of two is the chair of the board of Waves of Changes for Autism, a charitable organization that raises and distributes financial support to families raising children with autism. Families who receive the donations are able to allocate them to the often costly services, therapies and interventions that their children with autism so desperately need. When Contardi was called upon to chair the organization with friend, fellow Vaughan mom and co-chair Loredana Presutto, she jumped at the opportunity. “We live in an incredible community, one that has been so good to my family,” says Contardi. “I thought that this was just one small way I could give back.” As chair, Contardi helped organize the charity’s first two extremely successful 20

gala fundraisers, with total donations exceeding $300,000. Her eyes beam with excitement as she shares the numbers. “This community is so generous, and they feel the desire to help however they can.” Contardi admits she isn’t an expert on the clinical side of autism, but what she does know is that the financial support she and her team are working so hard to provide is going a long way for families in need. “Seeing these families who have so many challenges makes me realize how fortunate I am to not have been personally affected by these struggles. I genuinely sympathize with them and want to do everything I can to help.” Last year, Waves of Changes was able to offer financial assistance to 32 families in Vaughan. Contardi says the numbers won’t stop there, as the organization hopes to be able to help more each year. “By helping families directly we feel like we can get children access to services much more efficiently,” she says. As one of the people spearheading the organization, it’s Contardi’s job to ensure that Waves of Changes’ impact is far-reaching, by funding as wide a variety

of programs as possible. “Every child has different needs; a therapy or intervention that may work for one may not be suited for another,” says Contardi. “So we try to finance as many different programs as we can for these children.” “Waves of Changes for Autism provided the opportunity for our son [to experience a] unique therapy which directly resulted in our son’s improvement in speech and motor development,” says Jennie De Medicis. Frank and Jennie De Medicis share that their son’s development has continued since the initial support, and the family is profoundly grateful for Waves of Changes. It’s this level of genuine compassion and care for what she does that makes Contardi a local hero, but she hesitates to take any credit at all. “We have a team of about 22 amazing individuals, and everybody comes to the table with so many different strengths,” says Contardi. “They help [Loredana and I] help these children — it really is a group effort.” Presutto seconds Contardi’s notion that this incredible endeavour they were called to spearhead would not be possible without the help of its many moving parts. “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples,” says Presutto, quoting Mother Teresa. She makes it clear that she is passionate about helping families affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) equally, without any bias. The movement is growing and neighbouring communities are taking notice. Contardi shares that the organization has people regularly requesting to open up chapters of Waves of Changes in their own communities (like Newmarket and Oak Ridges). “I would love to see that,” says Contardi. “When you have the opportunity to help a family directly, people want to get involved, and that’s where the change truly lies.” Registration for financial assistance is now open on the Waves of Changes website. The application deadline is Dec. 31. Families can also visit the Waves of Changes website for additional information on the organization and useful community resources. The third annual fundraising gala will be held on Sept. 27, 2018. www.wavesofchanges.ca

A successful artist isn’t defined by their medium of choice, but by their ability to turn each endeavour into a masterpiece of its own. t the young age of 18, when Mario Adamo first immigrated to Canada from Calabria, Italy, his “American dream” was to become a successful artist. Painting and sculpting were passions that he was certain could become reality in the land of opportunity. “I realized very quickly that if I was going to be an artist, I would starve,” jokes Mario. www.mycitylife.ca

Wasting no time, the young entrepreneur picked up another trade: hairdressing. Throughout his twenties, and for nearly 30 years, Mario owned and ran two hair salons to proudly support his wife and four children. When it was time to move on, Mario successfully ran several other business ventures, until a unique opportunity arose and the Adamo family found a gold mine. In 1985, he and his wife Nancy took a

chance on a beaten-up 28-room inn and countryside property located in Mono Township in the Hills of Headwaters. It was then that Hockley Valley Resort was born. “There were cobwebs and wild dogs roaming the property — we thought my parents were crazy,” says Julie AdamoCass, Mario’s daughter as well as coowner and operator of Hockley Valley Resort and Adamo Estate Winery. “But Dec/Jan 2017/18

my parents were a good team, my dad being the visionary and my mom being more of the business driver, and together their determination and perseverance made it possible to succeed.” The duo took the fixer-upper and transformed it into a successful 104-room all-season resort and culinary destination that is now run by Julie and her younger brother John Paul Adamo. But the wheels kept turning — Mario knew there was more to be done. His entrepreneurial spirit burned bright and he turned to his roots for inspiration for a vision that would turn the province’s winemaking industry on its head. In 2012 Mario hand-planted the first 33 grapevines on a neighbouring property. “A lot of people told us we’d make some really good vinegar,” laughs Julie. “But the people who knew me knew I was going to do it,” adds Mario, a grin on his face. If anyone was going to cultivate the land in the Hills of Headwaters, it would be Mario. It was clear he was one headstrong Italian who never took no for an answer. Julie and John Paul admit that taking risks and welcoming a challenge is just in their father’s nature. Why did so many people doubt the success of the soon-to-be vineyard? When people think of Ontario wines, the first thought is always Niagara or Prince Edward County. No one had any clue that the terroir in Mono Township could sustain grapes. But Mario had no doubt — and thanks to his persistence, the help of consultant Jonas Newman of Hinterland Winery, and Adamo Estate vineyard and winery manager Shauna White, the dialogue soon began to change. In 2013 Adamo Estate Winery produced its very first 500 cases. The vineyard organically grew to about 24 acres, and it now boasts nearly 30,000 vines, producing roughly 11,500 cases in 2017 alone. Adamo Estate Winery has a sharp focus on cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir — its principal varietals — followed by Riesling, Gamay Noir, Cabernet Franc and Vidal. Other varietals include Chardonnay Musqué, Marechal Foch, Merlot and l’Acadie Blanc. What’s more, the vineyard employs organic and biodynamic farming

practices, which not only require more maintenance, but also incur higher production costs. This wasn’t a second thought for Mario, who at nearly 80 years old, still comes to the vineyard every single day to maintain his vines and actively participate in the tasting and perfecting of the wines. “If you’re lazy, that’s what you get — a lazy glass of wine,” he says. “If we were going to do this for the money, we’d be doing things a lot differently,” adds Julie. Recently, the vineyard’s 2016 Riesling placed platinum at the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards, an honour that nearly brings a tear to Mario’s eye as he shares news about the accolade. The wine scored 95 points, an accomplishment rarely achieved even in the province’s wider-known wine regions. John Paul, who has a culinary background, admits that he wouldn’t hesitate to enjoy a glass of Adamo’s Pinot Noir with a tasty mushroom risotto: “the woodsy mushroom notes make it a match made in heaven,” he says. “But I wouldn’t stop you if you wanted to pair it with a Mars Bar — who am I to say it doesn’t work?” Julie and John Paul are proud to sit at the helm of this new venture with the goal of preserving their father’s legacy with the same commitment to quality and superior service he has always provided guests of Hockley Valley Resort. Since the vineyard’s inception, John Paul’s focus has been flogging the wine. “I spent a lot of time on the road the first couple years working events in Toronto at a grassroots level — pop-up dinners, events and shows — just trying to convince people that we are producing quality wine,” says John Paul. “Because when you tell Adamo Estate Winery is them you’re located in Mono Township, they ask, dedicated to organic and ‘Where in the Niagara region is that?’” With hard biodynamic farming practices work and commitment to their vision Mario and the Adamo family officially put Mono on the map. In 2015 Adamo Estate Winery opened a cosy 20,000-sq.-ft production facility on the property, complete with a decorated event space, retail shop and quaint café. Situated in the beautiful Hills of Headwaters, the facility and vineyard play host to a number of private functions, special events and wedding ceremonies. Because Adamo Estate Winery isn’t located along the famous Niagara wine trail, Julie says the goal was to create a more experience-based destination. Like its sister company, the winery is focused on comfort and traditional Italian hospitality. “It’s easier to stay true to your vision when there are clients and customers that want and appreciate quality,” says Julie. “That’s always been our focus, even at the resort, so you tend to attract that as well. Our motivating factor is not money — it’s passion.” Adamo Estate wines are stocked at a number of well-known Toronto eateries and hotels. The products are also available in store or online for purchase. It’s safe to say that Mario accomplished his lifelong dream of becoming an artist; a winemaker is nothing short of a creator. And in case you were interested in his visual art, the walls of the winery are adorned with dozens of his awe-inspiring creations: there’s even a sculpture or two. www.adamoestate.com www.mycitylife.ca

The Top Choice Award is one that requires you to be nominated by your clients, something

that patients of Tasios Orthodontics have been adamantly passionate about. “The fact that we’ve won the award is an indication that patients really appreciate what we do as an orthodontic clinic,” says Dr. Tasios. With voting for next year’s Top Choice Award around the corner, patients will surely try to make it a four-peat for the defending champs.

Tasios Orthodontics’ treasure is great smiles. Tasios Orthodontics is more than your average clinic. With an emphasis on having a family-friendly atmosphere, treating patients as part of the Tasios family and being a more personalized, boutique-style clinic, Tasios Orthodontics shines brighter than a Hollywood smile. Being in the business of smiles is a family vocation for Dr. Bruce Tasios, one that effortlessly translates to the clinic. With free Wi-Fi, TVs and iPads at every chair, and freshly baked cookies, among many other endearing qualities, Tasios Orthodontics feels like “a home away from home.” Dr. Tasios believes that all patients “should have an opportunity to get orthodontic treatment,” which is why Tasios Orthodontics offers specialized payment plans designed to suit their clients’ needs. If that alone is not enough to make you feel at home, all patients have access to Dr. Tasios’ cellphone number and are able to contact him 247, which is especially helpful for when a patient has an emergency. The clinic does its absolute best to make sure they are there for you when you need them. In addition to the clinic’s hominess, Tasios Orthodontics does a lot of good work for the community. Participating in community events, offering scholarships to patients who do outstanding work in the community, and multiple patient appreciation events per year are just some of the ways in which Tasios Orthodontics gives back to the community (plus it has

would be easy to assume that someone who has risen to the position of being one of Canada’s most well-known and respected entertainment television personalities had their eye on that prize since they were very young. We’ve all heard such tales before, watching Tv at all hours, practising in front of the bedroom mirror when they should have been finishing that essay, maybe even using the hairbrush as a microphone to interview their favourite stuffed animals. But not so for Sangita Patel, the engaging, ebullient and enthusiastic on-air personality for Entertainment Tonight Canada and host for the past three years of Home to Win on HGTv Canada. Instead, you might even say she “engineered” her path to Canadian television stardom. “I was a professional engineer for many years. I graduated university as an electrical engineer,” says Patel. “I actually had applied for both engineering and journalism at the same time, but I didn’t really tell anyone about applying for journalism. I had been in a pageant as a kid and it was on Tv and I thought to myself, ‘This is kind of cool!’ But my dad was the voice of reason, asking me, ‘Where are you going to get a job?’” But while working as an engineer, Patel’s inner voice continued to be excited about the possibilities and opportunities of a career in journalism. She began to volunteer as a reporter to fuel that passion. She was at rogers Television doing an entertainment/lifestyle show called Toronto Living when she made a decision. “After three years of working as an engineer I made the big shift,” recalls Patel. “I started doing weather at The Weather network, which for me was perfect because it matched the science I loved as an engineer with the television I was so interested in. After that I got picked up by Citytv and then picked up at Entertainment Tonight Canada. I know you hear so many stories about people doing grunt jobs to break into Tv just to make a living, but I was already an engineer, so I wasn’t too worried about my life. everything at the start in television for me just sort of fell into place, and www.mycitylife.ca

those jobs at The Weather network and rogers were blessings to me.” In the early days of a “normal” profession, one might have an uncomfortable encounter with the big boss in the lunchroom, or spend a long elevator ride trying to make conversation with the chairman of the board. In television, though, those first awkward experiences are slightly different. “One of my first jobs at Entertainment Tonight Canada was covering a red carpet at TIFF, and I really wasn’t sure what TIFF was all about at the time — that was just my assignment for the evening. And I happened to be three months pregnant with my first child,” says Patel. “Who shows up on the red carpet, not talking to any reporters, but Brad Pitt? And I immediately turn into a fan girl. ‘I’m pregnant and I’m cold!’ I yelled for

some reason. Brad came right over to me and took hold of my hand to comfort me. All the microphones surrounded us, but I was so stunned I forgot to ask even a single question. It was one of the highlights of my career to that point, and I knew right then this was going to be an incredible experience.” Subsequent A-lister encounters and interviews have involved Tom Cruise, Julia roberts and George Clooney, whom she has interviewed three times. The last time, he made her coffee and showed her photos of his new children. “It’s true what they say: the bigger they are, the nicer they are,” says Patel. “Why I went into this business is my genuine love of talking to people. If I talk to somebody new every day, I’m going to learn something new every day. And listening to what they have to say Dec/Jan 2017/18

is such an important factor to capture a moment during an interview that you didn’t expect.” But aside from the glitz, glamour and fast pace of the entertainment world, there is a side to the business that Patel takes very seriously. As a South Asian born and raised in Toronto, she knows there are few South Asians doing what she does; she embraces her position, realizing she may be a role model for the younger generation. “I’ve never been in this business thinking I’m a South Asian, if that makes sense,” says Patel. “But about two years ago I began to realize that stature and that I have to acknowledge it. I take the position of being a role model for younger South Asians very seriously, and hopefully I can help that generation reach their dreams.” Going beyond the red carpets, famous celebrities and pressures of being that role model Patel describes the reality which has shaped her. It is, quite simply a love story. “I was just 18 and he was 24 when I met my husband Samir. He was studying medicine at the time,” she recalls. “We’ve now been together 20 years, have had two children together, and are enjoying the best times of our lives. I am so blessed to have him not only as my husband, but as my best friend.” It is Samir’s support that allows Patel to face that daily battle so many millions of Canadian women face: the balance of work and personal life. “He is an incredible dad, so involved in everything our kids do. He even takes care of all the school emails, reminding me what they might have to wear on certain days! I simply could not do what I do or be where I am without Samir. I am so blessed by him.” Despite juggling the life of a mother and working journalist with a travel-ondemand lifestyle, Patel takes the time to focus on her health and wellness, with a dedication to fitness. For the last few years she has videotaped her Tuesday workouts and posted them under #FitnessTuesday to encourage other women to get out there and get into fitness, in any form. “When you’re in your thirties and a mom, you may forget to take care of yourself,” she says. “I’m not a fitness fanatic, but I work out four 36

to five times per week. I’m glad these videos can motivate and inspire some women, and I always use #smile with every post I do.” What with Patel’s being a high-profile woman in the entertainment business, the conversation inevitably turns to current events that cannot be ignored, namely the Hollywood scandal involving Harvey Weinstein and the serious accusations against him. “I know what women experience in male-dominated industries,” says Patel. “When I was studying engineering, the classes were 80 per cent men, and when I worked in engineering, the businesses were 90 per cent men. It was a world where I dealt with harassment all the time — it was just normal, and you

“Where it starts for real change to happen over time is teaching them what not to do. If you can teach your son to play baseball, you can teach your son how not to treat women.” What’s next in the life of this dynamo? She has now acted in two movies and she is always open to new experiences. “At the end of the day, you have to live your passion,” says Patel. “Find something that makes you happy and work hard, because life is way too short. That’s what I’ve always tried to do. And talk to people, open up, don’t be a stranger to people, and maybe, just maybe, put down your phone.” That last piece of advice comes from first-hand experience a few years ago, standing outside a London hospital

Then I walked into television, where you had to look a certain way because that’s what’s going to sell.” Patel works with the One Campaign, which is trying to get 130 million girls into education and schools around the world. Because of her heritage, she also addresses the traditions of India, where boys are more valued than girls — this is an area where she sees an opportunity to effect change and educate boys. “If they are more valued, then why not teach your son at a young age how to treat and respect women?” asks Patel.

huck Hughes and Jane Lockhart are both titans of their respective industries. Hughes is a chef, television personality and restaurateur, as well as the executive chef and co-owner of two Montreal restaurants, Garde Manger and Le Bremner. Hughes spends lots of time travelling, both personally and for his numerous television shows, including Chuck’s Week Off, Chuck & Danny’s Road Trip, Chuck Eats The Street, and Chuck’s World. Similarly, Lockhart is the principal designer of the firm she founded, Jane Lockhart Interior Design. An award-winning designer and TV personality, from hosting and writing her hit show, Colour Confidential, to appearing regularly on The Marilyn Denis Show on CTV, Jane Lockhart is Canada’s colour and design expert. As masters of their craft, Hughes and Lockhart require the best tools at their disposal, and for both of them, these are appliances from LG. City Life had the pleasure of speaking to Hughes and Lockhart at the LG-sponsored event LG Kitchen. Having started as a busboy at 17, Hughes has always had a passion for cooking. This fervour developed from spending exorbitant amounts of time in the kitchen as a young child. Seeing his potential and his love of food, Hughes’s mother encouraged him to become a chef. “I just loved cooking and it’s something that I’ve been doing since I was really young, but I never thought it could be a job,” says Hughes. “You know, I loved it so much, it was so much fun, I’m like, ‘Really? You can get paid to do this?’” What pushed Hughes further into exploring this occupation was an encounter he witnessed involving an executive chef at the restaurant where he worked. “The general manager was coming to talk to the chef and he came up, and this guy is the big boss of the hotel pretty much and he goes, ‘Excuse me chef, permission to speak?’ And I’m like wow, wow, wow.... Wait a minute, this guy’s asking the chef if he can talk? The big boss is asking this guy?” The respect and admiration the hotel boss showed to the chef convinced Hughes. Not only would he be working at something he adored, he would also receive great respect for it. Now a successful and well-known chef, Hughes finds himself exploring a new side to food: cooking for his two children. Just as he did with his mother while

growing up, Hughes’s children hang out in the kitchen with him, learning how to cook. “I haven’t peeled a carrot in a year because my three-year-old is like, ‘Oh my God, can I peel the carrots?’ and I’m like ‘Yes! Finally!’” Since he spends so much time in the kitchen with his children, Hughes’s favourite two appliances are his LG Fridge and ProBake oven. The fridge is opened “every five seconds,” as his threeyear-old and one-year-old are constantly on the prowl for snacks and milk. Having a durable, quality product means not having to worry about wear and tear. Hughes and his son love baking cookies, scones and biscuits and watching them rise. He also uses the convection oven with the back heating element to work on dishes for his restaurants. And he uses the LG Styler frequently to keep his aprons and hockey equipment nice and fresh. “It’s like a little closet that steams,” Hughes says. Hughes wants his kids to learn the important life skill of cooking and he encourages all home cooks to do the same. “I’m just focusing on trying to make food fun and learn about it and be

involved... I’ve noticed every time [my son] cooks with me, anything, you know, even if it’s something that he doesn’t really like, he’s going to try it. Even if it’s something he wouldn’t really gravitate to naturally — because he made it with me, he’s going to at least try it and have some interest,” Hughes says. Hughes’s favourite fast food is French fries — which he has a tattoo of — and before his children were born, he ate a lot of takeout for dinner, specifically pizza, as he was always busy working at the two restaurants. Once Hughes had children, though, he had to find a balance between shooting his shows, working in the restaurants, and spending time with his family. “Ever since I had the kids it’s become really important for me to cook at home and have great equipment and be well set up, you know, to have fun,” Hughes says. “That’s the thing that home cooks really realize, you know? Get yourself set up properly and don’t make it a task, don’t make it a chore.” Hughes encourages everyone to find the joy in cooking, especially people with children. “Cooking should be fun

— everybody loves it — but if you have kids it’s part of your reality. Instead of making it a chore, I always try to make it fun or have some sort of activity that revolves around it, whether it’s choosing the stuff at the market, you know, always having a little angle helps.” Even if you don’t have kids, to Hughes cooking is an important life skill: “I think in the end you give people skills to cook minimal, really simple stuff, and you impact their lives greatly, in the sense that they can cook for themselves and make better choices.” For Hughes, food is not just about the food itself, but also the memories and experience attached to it. Some of Hughes’s most memorable meals include oysters freshly caught at sea, fermented shark and eating street food made by a local woman in her eighties. “When it puts you in context that becomes something amazing; even [if ] the bite wasn’t so good, the story behind it makes it pretty unique,” Hughes relates. These types of memories are what makes food all worth it for Hughes. ockhart, like Hughes, found her passion when she was a young child. While others were playing with their dollhouses, Lockhart was designing, building and furnishing hers. Lockhart graduated as an awardwinning student from Ryerson University and went on to launch Jane Lockhart Interior Design, a brand that continues to grow 20 years after its inception. Lockhart’s keen eye for detail and refined taste made her one of the most prominent interior designers in North America. Appearing on numerous shows and writing articles on design, Lockhart has made a name for herself as an industry giant. Her tenacity and fervour for design show prominently in all of her work. In the same way that chefs love their ingredients, Lockhart loves the esthetics and balance of decorated interiors. Part of the reason Lockhart favours LG is the sleek, modern look of its products. The black stainless steel has a “designer’s edge” that fits with Lockhart’s preferred design motif; this is why she has an LG Fridge in her own home. Lockhart’s design process is extremely client-focused. “I’m a bit of

a design nerd... When someone says, ‘I like this’ or ‘I like that,’ I ask them, ‘Tell me what your happy place is’ [and] tell me how you want it to feel.’ We don’t tend to go to books or magazines for inspiration — maybe reading books, but not visual books. We try to generate it directly from the clients and what they see by capturing their experience and then making it three-dimensional,” Lockhart explains. Lockhart’s emphasis on the client is part of the reason she has seen so much success. She’s able to get to the foundation of what a person wants, even if they cannot verbalize what that is. “A lot of people… they can’t articulate those ideas. So part of our job is to get them to find ways: maybe they have vacation pictures, or they have pictures of things that they love. We like to look at those, we like to look at their pictures that they’ve collected so we can understand them,” Lockhart says. Being incredibly research-oriented is what Lockhart believes makes her different from other interior designers. Lockhart takes the time to understand and develop every minute detail to give the customer what they want. Perhaps most importantly, she always approaches every client with an open mind. “We need to be open to ideas. I don’t mind a picky client. People go, ‘It’s awful when they’re picky.’ It’s not. It’s amazing. Because you know … it makes the process much easier in some ways, because they tell you if it works or

if it doesn’t work. But at the same time we need to try stuff. And we like them to push us, you know, [to] not do the same old thing. Our work is generally not consistent. It’s very different from every other job because we try to find that essence that is the client,” Lockhart says. Her willingness to work with every client, regardless of circumstance, shows that Lockhart is always up to the challenge. Her expertise shows in the way she communicates with clients, especially ones who want more control. “Like all consulting jobs, you’re only as good as the client will let you be. So our job is to share it with the client and let them say, ‘I like it’ or ‘I don’t.’ And you know, in the end, sometimes the job is better because the client did have good ideas … We go in, but take their ideas with us as well, so it’s kind of a combination.” For both Hughes and Lockhart, the end result — the client’s satisfaction — is of paramount importance. Whether it is esthetically pleasing, delicious food, or a visually harmonious living area, both Hughes and Lockhart specialize in giving the customer the best experience possible. Even in their widely subjective fields, Hughes and Lockhart have brought their childhood passions to life, teaching and encouraging others along the way. www.chuckhughes.ca www.janelockhart.com

UNDER PROMISE AND OVER DELIVER Experienced Realtors Lino and Italia Arci raise the bar for what it means to be in real estate

ocation has always been the most important tenet of real estate. So it’s no surprise that Lino Arci, awardwinning Realtor of more than 32 years, has made his new Vaughan base at the corner of Major Mackenzie and Cityview — or, as it’s commonly known, “where the Home Depot is.” The new office introduces Lino Arci’s personal subbrokerage, RE/MAX Hallmark Lino Arci Group Realty, to the real estate world. Real estate is Lino’s passion. “It gives us a great sense of satisfaction and that we’re doing really good things in the community,” Lino says. Being team leaders, partners Lino and Italia Arci have taken it upon themselves to receive business and life coaching and relay that knowledge back to their team. It is vitally important that every member of the Lino Arci Team displays the morals, tact and values that it is known for. During his 32 years in the business Lino Arci has developed an incredible reputation as a dependable Realtor — an especially important trait in the fast-cash world of real estate. For the last six consecutive years, the Lino Arci Team has placed not only in the Top 100 RE/ MAX Teams in Canada, but also in the Top 100 RE/MAX Teams Worldwide. Seeing the office, the atmosphere and culture, the friendliness and openness of the staff, and Lino and Italia Arci themselves, this does not come as a surprise. For Lino Arci Group Realty, it’s all about helping people. “When we start talking to people, we don’t ask, ‘Do you want to buy or sell a house?’ Our question is, ‘How can we help you?’” says Italia Arci, Lino Arci’s wife, partner and licensed Realtor for 30 years. What sets Lino Arci Group Realty apart is the help and services it offers its clients. Besides the team’s hospitable nature — offering coffee and cookies, Italia even half jokes, “We should have ‘come in for an espresso’ written on the windows” — the new Vaughan location is intended to be a learning centre. If clients need help with any area of real estate, Lino Arci Group Realty offers advice and knowledge from in-house lawyers and experts on financing, mortgages and more. If

the team does not know the answer, “We’ll go out and get it for you,” Italia says. These services are extremely valuable resources for first-time buyers, young couples and even experienced property owners. Alongside the bevy of services the team provides, Lino Arci offers his word that he puts his money where your home is: “Your Home Sold, GUARANTEED, or I’ll Buy It.” In fact, there have been a couple of occasions when Lino did buy a house the team was selling. Depending on the situation, Lino Arci Group Realty even helps prospective clients who are looking to purchase a home with financing and deposits. All of these services are what make Lino Arci Group Realty an award-winning team. Italia captures the essence of Lino Arci Group Realty thus: “We want to treat people as we would like to be treated. We don’t consider this selling. We consider what we do helping people find what they want, and we get to their dream home along the way.” 416-571-2724 (ARCI) www.linoarciteam.com

you want to go off the beaten path, Copperwood Trail in Stouffville will transport you to luscious green meadows, picturesque landscapes and the triumphant sound of galloping horses. The feeling at Copperwood Trail is the feeling of being home. Owner

Gabriella Vamvakidis’s bungalow invites you in to become part of the family. “I kind of feel that it is like what I do on a daily basis with friends or family,” says Vamvakidis. Located on a rustic farm, Copperwood Trail is a family-owned ranch that promises an escape from city life. This is no regular farm, though. Specializing

in equine therapy, Copperwood Trail promotes horse and human harmony. “Being around [the horses] is ver y calming and therapeutic,” said Vamvakidis. Copperwood Trail allows you a chance not only to connect with nature, but also to connect with one of its most majestic creations. The four horses at Copperwood

each have their own personality and energy. There’s Copper, a Welsh pony that was the farm’s first horse and from whom the farm gets its name. Spartacus, the herd leader, is a Friesian-Percheron cross and a gentle giant. Zeppelin is a Rocky Mountain and is super friendly. And Santana is a Morgan who is goofy and mischievous. Certified in equine-assisted learning (EAL), a kind of psychotherapy involving horses, Vamvakidis helps facilitate the interaction between you and the horse. A physical connection is expected; what is surprising is the emotional connection that forms. “It’s not like a petting zoo,” Vamvakidis says. You are interacting and communicating with the horse — forming a bond and learning about yourself in the process. As you build this relationship, “you work on your self-confidence, you work on how Copperwood Trail is a beautiful, serene space, that captivates, leaving you with a sense of freedom empowered you feel, or how you trust yourself to do something,” Vamvakidis says. Rather than riding the horses — an activity Copperwood Trail does not offer — you embark on a journey to connect or reconnect with nature on a unique level. You undergo a self-evaluation. “It’s a great connection back to stuff that we don’t get to experience anymore, but in a real way. It’s not a hike, or a zoo; you’re right in with them and interacting with them,” says Vamvakidis. Copperwood Trail offers a variety of programs and welcomes first-timers. The Barn Buddies program is great for young children and for sibling and cousin bonding. The Coffee in the Country program is for groups who want to have an outdoors outing away from the city. Beginner/Intro to Horses is for those who want to learn about horses and how to take care of them. The Recreation program is just for fun and great for the entire family. And the EAL lessons allow people to spend some one-on-one time with a horse and to learn valuable life lessons. Vamvakidis encourages first-timers to have a one-on-one experience:

“ you work on

your selfconfidence, you work on how empowered you feel, or how you trust yourself to do something

www.mycitylife.ca

“I’m always pleasantly shocked and surprised when I have a woman with me and we’re oneon-one and there’s tears, but in a good way. It’s an emotional connection that people don’t expect.” Not only do they connect you to nature, the EAL lessons are also particularly helpful for adults and children with specialized needs. “The more we [had children with specialized needs], the more we realized that a lot of children that would come on the autism spectrum really loved it,” says Vamvakidis. The major draw of Copperwood Trail is the opportunity to spend time alone with a horse and think. To connect to your surroundings and explore your mind. The process is very similar to meditation, which has become a staple in stress relief. One new program at Copperwood Trail is Group Meditation. The very first group meditation took place outside, near the stables, and consisted of 12 women and a life coach. During the meditation, “the horses came and stood around the circle. It was almost as if the horses were supporting and participating,” Vamvakidis recalls. This is the emotional relationship you can expect at Copperwood Trail. A recurring theme at Copperwood Trail is empowerment. “People come here feeling a lot of things that they’re not sure about. Working with the horses helps bring self-clarity. [It] forces you to be aware of why you are nervous, and when you change, they change. It’s an ‘in the moment’ thing. You notice: when you change, the horse responds. That in itself is a very empowering experience,” Vamvakidis says. Copperwood Trail allows you to escape the strain of city life and explore the empowered wild stallion in you. Vamvakidis puts it best: “I think that’s why people like coming here. It’s an escape from every day. Time to chill and get away from everything.” You can learn more about Copperwood Trail at www.copperwoodtrail.com. Dec/Jan 2017/18

confusing world of paints, textures, mixing and matching. Leading Steeles Paints is the “Pied Piper of Paints” himself, owner Claudio Grisolia, a 30-year veteran with a passion for paint and the wonderful world of colour. “Inspiration is not what it is; it is what I was born with,” says the affable Grisolia. “My older brother got involved in the paint store business and soon I was working there. My whole life was hanging around paint stores until I decided to open one of my own.” Grisolia is described by staff and customers as gregarious, a perfectionist, and obsessed with his store, the quality of customer service and his product knowledge, which he is only too happy to pass along to his staff and each of his customers. “My customer is my friend. I tell my staff that if the customer is your friend, you can’t go wrong,” says Grisolia. “Treat them like family or a friend and that’s the key. Take care of them and they’ll come back.” Thousands kept coming back and Steeles Paint’s growth was rapid. One of Grisolia’s dreams was to build the biggest paint store in Canada, which happened just

three years after Steeles Paint moved to its current location at 4190 Steeles Ave. W. Beyond his passion for the product, Grisolia has a philanthropic side almost as big as his store. For years he has given generously of his time through community-based fundraising events in the fight against breast cancer, raising tens of thousands of dollars in pinkbased initiatives. There is a feel-good environment at Steeles Paints, especially when employees are donning “Real Painters Wear Pink” T-shirts and helping to raise funds for cancer research. Steeles Paints is one of those community-based retail success stories that began small, grew bigger, became more sophisticated, and yet still retains its focus on individual customer service, adding colour to everyone’s life.

he construction of tens of thousands of homes and condominiums in the Greater Toronto Area in the last two decades has resulted in one very certain commonality: thousands of acres of offwhite walls, which the current generation of do-it-yourselfers have embraced with a passion. As a result, these are boom times in the paint business, as the DIY trend has people channelling their inner Picasso to personalize their home, or give it a fresh new look before placing it on the market. Perhaps the best evidence of this boom is Steeles Paint Décor Store in Woodbridge, a 20,000-sq.-ft. behemoth with a personal touch. Not only is it Canada’s biggest independent paint store and retailer of Benjamin Moore and Para Paints, but it also carries the country’s largest selection of environmentally friendly paint products. Break Free and Reignite the Flame:

Tips To Realize YouR exisTing Happiness

Written By Dr. Alok Trivedi

H

appiness is the end-all be-all goal for many people. Ironically though, when we go on the never-ending quest to find it, we overlook the existing happiness sitting right in front of us. What’s worse, the obstacles to our own happiness are often self-imposed, yet we become frustrated and depressed when that happiness doesn’t magically appear. To find your own personal happiness, you need to reignite the fire for life within you and quell those bad habits. Where to begin? For starters, stop doing the following six things. 1. Stop living for others Forget what your parents want you to do and what your friends think you should do. Don’t worry about other people’s versions of the American dream. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? What makes you happy? Live for yourself and your interests. You will never know what really makes you happy until you live for yourself and your goals. Remember, it is OK to change 50

your mind. Many people’s paths are not a straight line. Enjoy your curvy-lined life. It is more interesting to not know what is around the corner. Perfection is overrated anyway. 2. Stop comparing Especially in Western culture, the quest to keep up with the Joneses is ever-present. This race to have the newest and coolest things is pushed on us from birth. Comparison is a natural part of human culture, but it isn’t a helpful one. Don’t compare yourself to your friends, neighbours and peers. Doing this only emphasizes what you lack. You must appreciate what you have and realize you are not missing out on anything — except that large credit card bill. Oftentimes, comparison only increases feelings of insecurity and worthlessness. Focus on the things you are gifted with in this life, and be grateful for them. 3. Stop avoiding Stop telling yourself that “things will be better when” you make more money, get a promotion, buy a bigger house, etc.

It’s a fantasy rooted in psychological delusion, simply an excuse to not confront your present situation. Those things might bring temporary happiness, but they won’t solve your problems. It is easy to pawn off personal responsibilities to a later time, but addressing them sooner rather than later will lend you a realistic perspective on your happiness. 4. Stop playing it Safe all the time If you have lost sight of your dreams or enthusiasm for life, you need to find them again. Stop flying below the radar, not causing any waves. Take chances and be wrong. Fail — because it teaches you the lessons you need to learn. Like attracts like; therefore, your fears are bringing you more fear. Behavioural patterns are cyclical. If you are in a rut, it can grow very deep and hard to dig out of. Start getting more of what you want out of life by moving beyond the fear. Take risks, and take big ones. You never know what the future holds; you have to make changes to find out. Continued on page 52

5. Stop being your own worst enemy Your happiness is right there — not just in front of you, but surrounding you, enveloping you. You must be the one to realize the happiness for yourself. Stop holding yourself back from all that life has to offer. Insecurities and negative thought patterns are hindrances to one’s own personal happiness. Believe in yourself and realize that happiness is always available to you. 6. Stop being unappreciative Live in a state of gratitude to bring in more positive energy. Be grateful for the smallest things, like fresh air, clean water or a beautiful meal. Once you start to express your gratitude, happiness will begin flowing plentifully. A grateful nature brings you better health, emotional stability, confidence and overall well-being. More gratitude means more happiness. It really is that simple.

the takeaway: Happiness is easy to possess if you look within yourself. Take each

day as it comes, and better yet, each moment as it comes. Do what you love. Bad things don’t stop you from attaining the happiness you so desire, but bad patterns of thought do. Nip your bad habits in the bud. Your happiness is here — you just have to recognize it.

Azores

Heaven is a Place Called

he Azores islands are one of the world’s best-kept secrets. Located miles off the coast of Portugal, the Azores are a nature-filled wonder. Designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, the Azores nine islands offer some of the most incredible sights on the planet. With sparking blue waters, picturesque landscapes and a bevy of activities for the nature lover in you — ranging from hiking to rappelling into caverns, bathing in hot spring, and sunbathing on gorgeous beaches — the Azores islands are the vacation destination of your dreams. City Life had the pleasure of travelling to the Azores and experiencing the wonders first hand. Being fans of hiking, we made visiting trails a priority of the trip. As we proceeded through the lush green mountains of São Miguel, the pitterpatter of streaming water grew louder. The babble of the cascading waterfall

Caldeira Velha permeated the damp, warm draft surrounding us. At the base of the Caldeira Velha was a small pool of water with stone-crafted stairs leading up. It looked like something out of a movie. The Caldeira Velha was gorgeous, peaceful and wonderfully natural. This was the first of many incredible experiences we would have in the Azores. The awe-inspiring glory of nature simply overwhelms you in the Azores. With so many activities to choose from, it was hard to decide what to do. Should we spend a day on one of the many beautiful beaches relaxing? Or should we do something more adventurous? We started with the latter. The next day, we travelled to the island of Pico for an early-morning whale-watching trip. At the harbour, a cold, crisp air woke us up fully. A small rubber boat was our vessel, with seats we sat astride like we were riding horses. We set out in the bluest water I had ever seen, with a picturesque mountain landscape in sight. Low clouds spackled the skyline 60

of spectacular. That is perhaps the best way to describe the Azores: spectacular. Next we went to Casa Ancora. This fine-dining experience was delightful. I had a lovely meal of chicken and avocado bruschetta that was equal parts savoury and sweet and transported my palate. This was paired with an amazing glass of local wine, which Pino is known for. Not willing to miss out on the Azores’ famed beaches, we visited a number of them, including the captivating beach in Praia da Vitoria. The sun gently engulfed me with its light as I took my

shoes off and walked barefoot into the warm ocean. The boardwalk parallel to the beach had a sign that said, “I love Azores.” The same thought crossed my mind. One-of-a-kind experiences and great food are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what the Azores has to offer. The smalltown feel follows you everywhere you go. It’s homey, friendly and incredibly inviting. Whether you want to explore nature, enjoy the beach, or visit small towns, the Azores has something for everyone. www.visitazores.com

in the distance, looking like artificial snow wrapped around a Christmas tree. There was no guarantee that we would see anything. Almost immediately, a pod of curious dolphins surrounded our boat. The sleek, playful creatures performed as if they knew we were there for them, jumping in and out of the water and swimming close to the boat so we could see them. I’ve been to Marineland and the zoo, but this was something else, something unique. Seeing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat was nothing short

oming off the success of October’s sold-out Giving Thanks Gala, marking the launch of the hospice’s “A Better Ending” campaign, Hospice Vaughan steadily inches closer to its $10-million goal to build Vaughan’s first Centre of Excellence for Hospice and Palliative Care. With $4.5 million raised by generous capital donors and another $2 million of funding from the Ministry of Health, the committee is pulling out all the stops and reaching out to the community for their support. This includes offering several donation initiatives like the newly launched Brick Campaign and long-term support options. The planned state-of-the-art facility will include a 10-bed residential hospice, family support and bereavement services, and visiting hospice services, and it will serve as a community hub that will support research and education on palliative-care best practices. “We talk a lot about making everything so beautiful and special when people come into the world,” says Maria Castro, president of the board of directors. “It’s really just about paying attention to the other side of the coin, making sure individuals and their families receive compassionate care and support as they deal with life-limiting illness and loss.”

he recurring theme running through all of Landen Wakil’s films is the classic underdog story. His characters are often displaced and have had difficult childhoods. This motif continues in Some Place Better Than Here. Some Place Better Than Here was initially imagined as a screenplay named Thunder Road, inspired by Bruce Springsteen lyrics. Unable to produce the film, Wakil made a short film for Thunder Road and posted it on his YouTube channel (alongside a documentary about casting and filming it). Wakil then took to the open-source novel creator WattPad and crafted his script into a novel. Some Place Better Than Here is a coming-of-age tale that pokes and prods the audience to be candid observers of the inherent wrongs of the world and the damage and abuse which, although
