omeone once told me … that the secret to a happy life is to have love in your heart. That is the compass by which we should approach our everyday life. And if we do this, we will never be lost. Now, if you believe in God, you can replace the word love with the word God or what best describes your belief and the essence of this message still remains the same. As we begin a new year, with barely a few weeks behind us, we can reflect upon all the things we have accomplished Michelle Zerillo-Sosa, and what we have yet to fulfill. For this is a favourite Publisher/Editor-in-Chief time of year of mine, because I am still in time to make any necessary adjustments to the course my life is taking. I can be accountable, and make a difference, as it is still early on ... I know you are confused by where I am going with this. But deep inside you know your truth. We can pretend that things are good … even if they are not, particularly, with people who are not close to us. But deep within our hearts we know whether we are at peace or we are aching. Whether we are truly where we want to be. Imagine my pleasant surprise when my meeting with Paul Mason, Fashion Santa, revealed a kind and gentle man, despite the stereotype of — My Nonna Sestina many models being self-centred — and who would blame him, given that he has experienced an unprecedented media frenzy over the holidays? Dare to Google “Fashion Santa” and there are over 202 million results, with him occupying the first five pages … But here is a man who, yes, enjoyed the attention … but has big plans as to how to shine that spotlight on others and charitable initiatives that occupy his heart. Read his story on page 14. I believe one can see beauty and love in everything that surrounds us. The problem is that a lot of people tend to look for the negative in people and not the positive. It’s all in the approach. Believing that the glass is half full and then sharing those blessings with those less fortunate is what my goal will be this year. What’s yours? If you wish to see what the stars have in store for you this new year, see page 50. Keep in mind, if the door does not open … it’s probably not your door. We hope you enjoy this February/March edition of City Life Magazine, for 2016 marks our 12th year in publication. As we continue to make a mark in your heart with stories that make a difference in your life, we hope you do the same as you stay true to your goals and dreams.

I learned that there’s a certain character that can be built from embarrassing yourself endlessly. If you can sit happy with embarrassment, there’s not much else that can really get to ya.

e’re talking about my goatee. I’m with SportsCentre anchors Kate Beirness and Natasha Staniszewski at the CTV studios and we’re talking about, of all things, my facial hair. Staniszewski mentioned I looked familiar. Maybe we met before? I didn’t think so. But maybe, I suggested, it was because of this goatee, which I’d recently grown. I regretted those stupidly embarrassing words as soon as they left my lips. So I did what everyone does in an embarrassing situation: I rambled. Some friends had been chirping me about it, I blurted, so I’m leaning toward shaving it off, blah, blah, blah. This continued for

about a minute, and it’s as ridiculous as it sounds. But Beirness offered an out. She kinda liked it, she said, fighting that strained look of someone saying something they don’t really believe just to be nice. Oh, bless your sweet heart, Kate Beirness. This was the last thing I wanted to talk about with Kate Beirness and Natasha Staniszewski (story on page 26). They’re the first female anchor team of TSN’s flagship morning program, SportsCentre. I wanted to talk to them about that. Instead, here I was bumbling about shoddy facial hair. But, hey, maybe beards are just on everyone’s mind these days? I couldn’t escape its grip. And I blame Paul Mason. The guy’s epic whiskers caused a selfie tsunami during Yorkdale Shopping Centre's Fashion Santa campaign last year. Beards are all the rage in hipster circles, but Mason helped slap the high-fashion seal of approval on Viking-esque facial hair. It’s catapulted him to the heights of fame. How’s he handling it? You’ll have to read our cover story to find out: page 14. Whether you can grow a beard that would make Gandalf jealous or, like me, you couldn’t sprout sideburns to save your life, remember: even if your attempts don’t turn out as planned, you’re just a shave away from a clean start. Until next time,

The beard that broke the internet

Where does Fashion Santa go after the holidays? Up north, of course. Toronto male model Paul Mason brings his epic beard to Vaughan to talk fashion, fame and what’s next with City Life Magazine

t half past the hour in Toronto’s hippest neighbourhood, bundled against the afternoon cold in a boyfriend coat, I make my way to the Drake Hotel to meet the man whose white beard broke the Internet over the holidays. Paul Mason, a.k.a. Fashion Santa, soon slips through his local hot spot’s double doors and politely extends a naked hand, his sparkling blue eyes atwinkle, his beard the colour of snow. We head over to the dimly lit dining area, where he slides onto a bar stool and orders a pint of beer. I tilt my head toward a table full of fidgety, whispering young women behind us. It’s only a matter of time before someone interrupts us. “Sir, you did a really great job up at Yorkdale,” says a young man passing by, patting him on the back. Mason Feb/March 2016

thanks him before acknowledging my raised eyebrows. “Funny, right?” I start to feel like I’m interviewing Bono. From the start, the Toronto male model — who turns 52 in June — has me smiling, his infectious and warm personality winning me over. His classic handsome features don’t hurt the situation, either. “I’m wearing these socks in homage to my new character,” he says with a laugh, lifting up his pant leg to reveal funky black-andred houndstooth socks tucked into his brogues. They were a gift from Yo Sox on Queen West, as is the red Apple watch on his wrist the tech giant threw his way. “That’s what’s happening now; I’m getting that every week,” he says of the constant freebies, the first of many signs of a celebrity in the making. If you happened to be in a Netflixinduced coma over the holidays, Mason’s portrayal of a hip, stylish Santa smiling for selfies in support of SickKids at Yorkdale Shopping Centre made local and national news and sparked worldwide attention after going viral. But longtime friend and American producer Neil Meron first recognized Mason’s star power when they met 10 years ago while he was in town shooting Chicago and Hairspray in Toronto. He was instantly struck by Mason’s silver hair and perceptiveness, outgoing yet introspective personality. “I’ve never met a guy quite like him,” Meron says. “You can tell that there’s always some deep thoughts going on behind that fantastic look of his. What you see is definitely not what you get. There’s so much more.” Mason began growing out his beard a few years back while deeply grieving the loss of his mother, who he describes as his best friend and the person who’s taught him to face challenges head on. He had been living and working in New York City for 14 years before moving back to Toronto to be next to her in her final days. “When you’re watching someone you love so much deteriorate it takes a part of your spirit away,” says Mason, staring into the bottom of his tipped glass. But then magical things started happening. The very beard he grew as a tribute to his mother started tickling www.mycitylife.ca

the fancy of the fashion world. Then it sparked the serendipitous Fashion Santa collaboration with the marketing team at Yorkdale. Mason felt like his life, his calling, was finally falling into place. “I believe my mother’s spirit is the driving force behind everything that’s happening. I feel compelled to do better now more than ever.” The successful 2015 Fashion Santa campaign, which made a quiet debut the year prior, had babies to teenagers, mothers to seniors, lining up at the mall for a picture on the lap of a slim and modern-day Santa — even Canadian pop star Justin Bieber stopped by to strike a pose with Mason, who says he clocked in 88 hours of picture-taking madness over the Christmas holidays. Approximately 5,000 selfi es with the YorkdaleFashionSanta hashtag were shared on social media sites, prompting Yorkdale to donate $10,000 to SickKids, says its marketing director, Lucia Connor. “I’m totally selfied out,” says Mason. “This movement has morphed into something that is so crazy. Some people were shaking, saying, ‘you changed the face of Christmas; you’ve done something for us.’ I thought, ‘wow, this is deep; this is something else.’” *** A week later, Mason meets me at the elegant XXI Chophouse in Kleinburg for his photo shoot with City Life Magazine. He emerges from the back seat of his ride in a sharp black overcoat, one hand clasped onto a black leather bag and freshly pressed white dress shirt, the other his iPhone, which buzzes constantly with emails and messages. After settling into the contemporary restaurant with striking, rustic touches, the Silver Fox slips into a custom-made, slim-fit grey tuxedo and black tie, his beard still full and the colour of snow. The camera before him flashes and, like a big cat closing in on its prey, his face instantly transforms into mesmerizing intensity — his cheekbones like chiselled ice, his piercing eyes narrowing with laser precision. The room is his. Mason has racked up an impressive 30 years in the industry as a model for high-end U.S. department stores and top brands around the world, www.mycitylife.ca

I was doing a lot of catalogue work and that killed me. I was making great money but I had to look like a catalogue guy and internally I’m not a catalogue man, I’m not a conservative guy. I’m an individual.” Before he took over the responsibilities of jolly 18

old St. Nick, Mason was best known locally as an ambassador for TOM* (Toronto Men’s Fashion Week), which has a charitable initiative that raises funds for kids with disabilities, and can be seen in his recent campaign for Montauk Sofa that debuted at IDS (Interior Design Show). “Clearly he’s a good-looking guy but what makes him truly great is his heart,” says TOM* executive director Jeff Rustia. Mason, Rustia adds, is the only male model that receives a loud applause every time he walks the TOM* runway.

Mason also softly mentors and inspires a handful of fledgling models with plans to perhaps officially open his own agency one day. “My life changed drastically after I met him,” says Richmond Hill native Michael Lanni, 29, who worked at a grocery store before being scouted by Mason nine years ago at, coincidentally, Yorkdale Shopping Centre. “A month after meeting Paul I was in Montreal shooting a campaign. His belief in me has made me realize that I can be one of the top models. If someone who has www.mycitylife.ca

shot the campaign for D&G believes in me so much, then why shouldn’t I believe in myself ?” Before the shoot wraps up, it’s apparent that Mason is still riding the adrenaline rush of his recent success. He’s as happy as an elf in a toy shop, giddy with excitement about what’s coming next, a true believer in the idea that what you put into the universe you’ll get back. At the same time he’s pragmatic, the long years of work he’s put into climbing to the top keeping him grounded. “Fame is fickle; it comes and goes. Once you’re there, how do you WHY AGE IS JUST keep it?” he muses. A NUMBER Not one to lose “It’s important for me momentum, Mason is to keep a healthy body, multi-tasking on several mind and spirit. When big ideas and prospective you start to let go of partnerships following those things that’s the Fashion Santa media when I think the age frenzy. Plus: London and thing starts to kick in.” Paris fashion weeks are just around the corner. ON HIS His mind is a constant PASSION PROJECTS whir; he’s never not “I love architecture thinking of his next move, and design. When I and how it can benefit was younger I was others. “I have a plan that a jeweller and used would blow your head off. to sell at the AGO. I A major collaboration now have an idea for with someone, but I can’t a lamp that I want to tell you,” he teases. What get copywritten and he can say for now is that trademarked.” he hopes to reprise the role of Fashion Santa and ON FASHION put the character’s hype “Men are so inspired to good use by creating a to be on point with foundation and “Fashion fashion. It elevates Santa Ball” that would your mood. There’s an raise money for childrenexpression about when focused charities. His you’re feeling very proclivity for generosity blue: put on a really undoubtedly traces back good, tailored suit and to his early days as a it’ll bring you up. A suit is like modern-day student of social work armour for men.” at Ryerson University before being scouted by a modelling agency and taking off for his very first shoot in Tokyo. “I’m just fearless and I have no idea where it came from. I think I look at what people are doing in the world and I think, ‘we’re so capable as individuals … why couldn’t it be us? Why can’t it be us? Why can’t the kid from Mississauga (where I grew up) be in magazines? I’m determined; I don’t listen to the chatter. I put my blinders on and I go straight.” @paulmasonmodel www.mycitylife.ca

The Unstoppable

Not even 20-below temperatures could rein in Tom Hardy. Fresh off an Oscar nom, The Revenant star reflects on the year that solidified him as one of Hollywood’s premier leading men Written By Georgina Langford

I

t’s been a big year for Tom Hardy and it keeps getting better by the month. In October, the British star became a father for the second time when his wife, Charlotte Riley, gave birth in London. In November, the film Legend, in which he plays two identical twin gangster brothers, the Krays, earned him rave reviews for his two-fisted performance. And in January of this year, Hardy returned to the big screen with the release of historical Western thriller The Revenant. Directed by noted filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for Birdman last year, The Revenant co-stars Hardy alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as 19th century fur trappers battling each other and the elements in treacherous terrain in the Rocky Mountains. After DiCaprio’s Hugh Glass is abandoned and essentially left to die by Hardy’s John Fitzgerald, the former goes on a quest for revenge against his partner. Based on a true story,

the film is being touted as a Best Picture winner and sees Hardy, who’s in the mix for Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Academy Awards, and his fellow cast and crew members pushed to the limit in wintry, sub-zero conditions during the course of a gruelling nine-month shoot that took place in the wilderness regions of Alberta, Canada, and Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. “I was pushed harder than I have ever been pushed before,” Hardy recalls of the experience. “We shot in -20 C temperatures with snow and wind and ice, and it was the kind of thing where you wonder if you’re going to make it out alive. I loved it, though, and I loved how Alejandro was committed to taking things to the limit.” That kind of adventurous, risktaking bravado is what defines Tom Hardy’s indomitable spirit. The 38-year-old actor is fast becoming one of Hollywood’s top stars following his work on this summer’s Mad Max: Fury Road that went on to earn nearly $400 million. Best known for his

THE INTERVIEW Q: Tom, this has been quite a year for you. How do you put it all into perspective? A: I just look for great stories and the chance to work with interesting people. I don’t have a big plan and I don’t even want to think about what it all means. I think of myself as an ordinary guy who has a great job. As an actor, I view myself as someone who gets to participate in the vision of incredible filmmakers like Nolan, Winding Refn or Iñárritu. The process of how they achieve what they set out to do fascinates me, and I love being along for the ride and being able to contribute as much as I can to the process. Q: There’s this contradiction between your screen image and your real nature. You play very tough characters but in real life you’re very friendly and gentle and you’re known for giving people hugs as a sign of that warmth. A: I’m not a tough guy. I can be if I need to be but that’s not my nature. A long time ago I discovered that fear played a big role in the way I reacted to things and that’s why I would get into fights when I was younger. But it’s so pointless and stupid. That’s not the way I want to live. I still have that fear inside me but now I understand it and I can manage it. I don’t let it dictate my behaviour anymore … I want to www.mycitylife.ca

work in a variety of acclaimed indie features including The Drop, Locke and Bronson, he also made headlines with his Batman-killing performance as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Hardy lives in London with his wife and their newborn baby. The couple first became romantically involved while working on Wuthering Heights in 2009 and eventually married in July 2014. Hardy is also a doting father to a son, Louis, 7, from his previous relationship with Rachel Speed.

embrace everything that is kind and good in life. I want to be a good example as a father and be someone who is going to be a healthy and happy influence. Q: There is a sense about you that you could explode if provoked, though? A: Maybe there’s still a sense of anger inside me and way back I could strike back if I was pushed sufficiently. But that kind of thing only gets you into trouble and once you’ve gotten into a certain position you just have to forget about that kind of stuff. Sometimes the perception that you might get angry can stop people from behaving in a way that you don’t like. But the best thing is that directors might see that in me and ask me to play these characters where I get to pretend that I’m tough. But that’s not who I am. I’m just glad to get the work. www.mycitylife.ca

Q: You’ve been working pretty hard as of late. First you spent nearly a year working on Mad Max and more recently the shoot on The Revenant lasted much longer than originally planned. A: It was a much bigger beast than anyone expected. Alejandro has his own vision and he will do anything to achieve what he sets out to do. I admire that intensity and dedication — even though it sometimes drives you crazy. Q: What drew you to the project? A: It wasn’t the idea of freezing for nine months that made me do it. [Laughs]. But I liked the novel by Michael Punke and the themes of survival and revenge. The story has an epic quality and you’re taken into this struggle of man vs. nature, as well as two men fighting each other.

Q: Wasn’t Leonardo DiCaprio responsible for bringing you on board the film? A: [Laughs]. I was going to work on another film (Splinter Cell) but Leo called me and told me I was being an idiot if I didn’t read the script and take a look at the story. Leo’s a brilliant bloke, very dedicated and very tough. Q: Many people are touting you as a major movie star now, and there’s been a lot of Oscar buzz around your work in Legend. A: I don’t want to hear any of that talk. I never think of myself in those terms where I’m the star and someone whose name is going to bring in the audiences. I see myself as a character actor who has had the chance to play in some important films, and where some of those roles have been leads. Feb/March 2016

TREAT YOURSELF

AD

I’m not looking to play in blockbusters. They’ve happened more by chance and Mad Max was really the first big one for me where I play the lead. I enjoy doing the smaller films like Locke or London Road — I want to keep making different kinds of stories. Q: Are you by nature drawn to extreme characters? A: [Laughs]. I think a lot of directors see me as someone who is capable of playing extreme or tough characters. I can draw on extreme emotions when I need to and maybe some of that comes from my own experiences in life when I was much younger. I feel like I have a pretty normal life as a husband and father. I don’t choose to play tough characters but I am very interested in the twisted psychology of human nature. That’s why I wanted to play both Kray brothers. How can you not want to take on a challenge like that? Q: Your work also reveals a very sensitive side to you at times. A: Your flaws and doubts and vulnerabilities are going to be much more interesting and reveal much more of you than your aggressiveness. That’s really a mask to prevent people from knowing who you are. I like being sensitive and emotionally available. I still remember the time I spent with James Gandolfini [on The Drop] and getting to know him. I will never forget how this big man who looked so intimidating was actually very sensitive, vulnerable and so kind in person. He was just a beautiful man. Q: You’re often spotted with a dog around you. What do you find most special about canines? A: I’ve always loved dogs. I love the way they will stick with you and never leave your side. They are very loyal. I find that so beautiful about them; they only want to be part of whatever it is you’re doing and they’re happy just to sit at your feet because they feel that closeness to you. I’m a very loyal person myself and I have this pack mentality just the way a dog has. They want to belong, they want to attach themselves to you and be part of what you do. I just love dogs. Q: You’ve been very open about some of the difficult times you went through as a young man. Does being an actor make it more complicated to lead a stable life? A: Actors need anything they can find to find balance in our lives. You’re constantly throwing yourself into characters with very different emotions and personalities and you often need to draw on very intense emotions of your own to be able to play those roles, which are sometimes violent and disturbing. You can easily lose your sense of reality.

Q: How were you ultimately able to ground yourself and find that balance? A: I had to fight hard to find stability and become a better man. It takes a lot of work and perseverance and also the help of many good friends. Becoming a father also gave me a greater sense of responsibility. When you are responsible for another life you have to forget about being selfish and take care of your family and become the kind of father and husband you need to be. www.mycitylife.ca

Tough and Rugged

From a fuel-efficient diesel to an off-roadready SUV, City Life tests two more-than-capable vehicles at the top of their game for 2016

Written By Michael Hill

GMC Canyon (Diesel) When General Motors brought back the GMC Canyon (and its Chevrolet Colorado cousin) in 2015, it engineered the revitalized midsize truck to handle a diesel engine and its higher torque. So when the Canyon rolled into 2016 with a segment-exclusive Duramax 2.8-Litre turbodiesel, it was primed for the additional 100 lb-ft of torque it pumped out over the Canyon’s gasoline V-6. That extra brawn resulted in an increased towing capability of 7,700 lbs and improved fuel economy, with GM claiming the Duramax as its cleanest diesel engine yet. You can rest assured that’s legit, as it earned the U.S. EPA’s “Certificate of Conformity,” meaning it’s compliant with all emissions laws — unlike a certain German manufacturer. www.gm.ca

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Traditionally, Jeep’s pedigree is all about off-roading. But it’s vehicles like the midsize Cherokee where Jeep departs for more mainstream waters. The 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, then, is a departure from that departure, equipping this family-friendly vehicle for some serious bushwhacking. Along with a one-inch ride lift, it’s fitted with tougher suspension, Firestone all-terrain rubber (and a full-size spare), red tow hooks (two up front, one in the rear), transmission and oil coolers, and hill ascent and descent control, which all helped it earn the “Trail Rated” badge. Its trim-specific “Mango Tango” paint gives added flavour to the black wheels and black hood detail, as well. www.jeep.ca 24

SPORTS

The SportsCentre Sisterhood

One-on-one with the first all-female anchor team of TSN’s SportsCentre Written By Michael Hill

T

he best advice Kate Beirness ever received was to leave. She was working low-level at Rogers Sportsnet, booking travel for on-air talent and the like, with aspirations of one day becoming a sports broadcaster. Joining

the ranks of one of Canada’s television giants seemed like a good place to start. Her boss disagreed. “He said, ‘If you’re really serious about being on air you need to get out of here,’” she recalls. Making the big time meant being in front of a camera. Every. Single. Day.

She had to go where the work was: Smalltown Nowhere. “I tell people that come up to me that it’s going to be like high school hopscotch,” she says of her early broadcasting days. Natasha Staniszewski, Beirness’s coanchor on TSN’s morning edition of SportsCentre, concurs: “I slept on an air mattress for two years in Saskatchewan, moving from small town to small town to small town, because you never knew where you were going to go.” It’s 8:30 p.m. on a chilly Wednesday evening as the pair reminisces from a small boardroom at CTV Toronto Studios. At this hour, most are at home, kickin’ it with the family, maybe catching up on The Bachelor before www.mycitylife.ca

hitting the hay. But for Beirness and Staniszewski (pronounced “Stan-ahchef-ski”) the day’s just beginning. They co-host TSN’s morning edition of SportsCentre, the channel’s flagship highlight program that goes live at 1 a.m. and runs throughout the morning. It’s TSN’s highest-profile slot, and Beirness and Staniszewski are its first ever all-female anchor team. To audiences, this may seem like a watershed move — two women sharing the desk of TSN’s prime-time show. But for this pair? No biggie. “It’s not a big deal until other people say, ‘It’s cool for me to see you up there,’ or, ‘It’s cool for my daughter to see you up there.’ That’s when it’s like, OK, I guess it’s kind of cool,” says Staniszewski, a born and bred Edmontonian. “I never even really thought about it,” says Beirness, a basketball junkie from Port Perry. “But maybe it’s because the industry has come that far.” When Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole left TSN for the bright lights of American TV in 2013, it sent a ripple through the industry. For a decade, the pair occupied the desk on SportsCentre’s morning broadcast and redefined what was expected from the modern sportscaster. These guys cut loose. These were the two who sang Darude’s “Sandstorm” while the other did some awkward-dad robot dance. And people loved it. The Wall Street Journal even wrote an article lamenting “Why Can’t We Have Canada’s ‘SportsCentre’?” For a time TSN rotated anchors, trying to find the right combination to fill the giant clown shoes left behind. When the dust settled, the faces viewers saw were younger and way prettier. But how were these newcomers supposed to live up to that game-changing legacy? The simple answer is: you don’t. “My big thing from the beginning — and I think that we’ve established this too — has been: I don’t want to be Jay and Dan,” says Beirness. “And if you try to be them that’s when you fail, because they were so unique and so funny and so talented that it’s completely pointless to try and mimic them.” For TSN’s VP of production, Mark Milliere, it was all about finding anchors that the audience would want to have a beer with. “That’s the vibe you want, www.mycitylife.ca

because that means they’re connecting, you find them credible and fun to be around,” he says. Fun is one way to describe Beirness. Bold and high energy are good, too. And confident. You hear about people who walk into a room and take it over. Beirness makes them look like amateurs. She calls people “Dude” and “Bud” like some seasoned hockey pro. I imagine if I challenged her to arm wrestle she would slam her elbow on the table and be like, “All right, tough guy, let’s go.” And she would probably win. Surging down her arms are the

hills-and-valley definition of someone more than familiar with the dumbbells and lat pull-down machines and other equipment of a gym that I’m Googling to make it sound like I know what you would find in a gym. She’s the type of person who cannonballs into the deep end without testing the water. “There’s a deep end?” she quips. Staniszewski, on the other hand, offers the balance. She’s personable yet cautious, knowledgeable but modest. When Beirness explains that Staniszewski is an excellent baker, “like the greatest baker in the newsroom,” Staniszewski responds humbly, “I’m not that good.” She does this often when compliments come her way. It’s a deflective trait you find in certain athletes (in high school, she helped her volleyball team reach Alberta’s provincial championships) who don’t want to let their success go to their heads. She’s more prone to stand back and observe and analyze before wading in. But this is what makes their chemistry so potent. They know their

sports, yes. But they also constantly play off each other to keep things flowing. We get into how they’re tinkering with nicknames for Staniszewski because of her last name’s phonetic intimidation. “We’re working on ‘The Chef,’” Beirness says. “I like The Chef, too,” Staniszewski chimes in. “The Chef ’s fun. The Chef ’s always up to something,” Beirness continues. They have an almost sisterly connection. (“Sisters. That’s adorable,” Beirness laughs when I suggest it.) It’s easy to be around, keeps you engaged — which is what a modern broadcaster needs. In a day and age where we can stream highlights and get immediate score updates with the tap of a finger, television needs to give more than just information. It needs to also entertain. Broadcasters need character, and Beirness and Staniszewski get that. “I think viewers like it when you show a little personality,” Staniszewski says. “I think they like that I’m an Oilers fan. I think that they love that Kate’s a Bears fan. So every once in a while you’ve got to let that out.” Adding: “We’re broadcasters, but we’re fans. Otherwise we wouldn’t be doing this.” Beirness and Staniszewski have reached one of the few peaks in the mountain range of sports broadcasting. They both pulled a Drake, starting from the bottom before they “Now We’re Here”’d. So, being relatively young and already at the top, what does the future hold? “I’ve always taken this industry a day at a time,” Beirness says. “And right now, all I’m working on is being the best sports broadcaster that I can be and making this morning loop show the best in the country.” Staniszewski: “This is my dream job right now. I have no plans or aspirations to go anywhere else. Take it day by day and be grateful for having it, because god knows things can change really fast.” “Now I’m all inspired to go sports broadcast some more!” Beirness quips. And off they go to do just that, walking side by side down the halls of CTV studios, laughing like sisters. @KateBeirness @tvnatasha Feb/March 2016

Red Carpet Diaries City Life takes five with etalk hosts Ben Mulroney and Danielle Graham during the tuxedo-and-gown torrent that is the awards season to see what life is like behind the camera Written By Michael Hill

T

hey call it their Olympics. It’s award season. With the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Academy Awards and more all rammed into a two-month whirlwind, you could say things get pretty hectic for the likes of etalk hosts Ben Mulroney and Danielle Graham. “Everything that we do in our job is geared towards these few months,” says Mulroney during a recent break after the Critics’ Choice Awards. We caught up with Canada’s conduits to the stars during a rare moment of calm to find out more about life lining the red carpet, their most memorable Oscar moments and who they believe will take home statues at the 88th Academy Awards.

Danielle Graham: Well, we go with

an incredible research pack that our team has been working on for a while, and that’s everything from stats to how many nominations, how many wins, how many times they’ve been overlooked — everything like that is in there.

Q

You’re entering the home stretch of award season, with the Academy Awards only a few weeks away. How do you prepare for this hectic time of year, for Oscar night? Ben Mulroney: As I get older, it’s

about having more discipline in my life. It’s about recognizing that a good night’s sleep is worth everything. It means trying to put your best foot forward all the time, and it means trying to go into every situation prepared and rested and fed, because you never know how long you’re going to be on the red carpet for. [Laughs.]

Q

What are some things you Ben Mulroney and Danielle Graham, hosts of CTV’s always bring to L.A. for etalk, Canada’s No. 1 entertainment news show throughout awards season the awards?

30

City Life Magazine

Feb/March 2016

I also pack some hydrating skin stuff to make sure my skin is glowing — gotta look good. Spanx are important. I’m four months pregnant, so they’re extra important this year [Laughs]. As long as I have my research, and wardrobe, obviously, stuff to make me look good, I should be OK.

Q

You watch all these films throughout the year. But when you see a film for the first time is it apparent if it’s award-calibre or not, or do you need to watch it against other films and gauge its merit? DG: No, I feel like there’s a few films

every year that one of us — whether it’s Ben or Devon [Soltendieck], myself, Traci [Melchor], Lainey [Lui] or Liz [Trinnear] — see and we come back and we say to the rest of the team, “This movie is going to get an Oscar,” or, “This performance will win an Oscar.” For me, the most recent I remember would have been — when I was so confident, and I was right — it was Dallas Buyers Club, for Jared Leto. I told him in the room that he would win the Oscar. We didn’t even know at that point if he would ever get a nomination, and he came back to claim that. And I really do love being right [Laughs]. So that for me was a real victory. So it’s obvious a lot of the time.

Q

Tell us about one of your most memorable red carpet moments. BM: Years ago, we knew that George

Clooney was going to be walking the

www.mycitylife.ca

carpet, and this was the year where he was nominated for a number of Oscars for Good Night, and Good Luck, and I think he was also in Syriana, so he was nominated for that. And I believe it was the same year that Walk the Line was nominated for best picture and Reese Witherspoon won for her portrayal of June Carter Cash. So we had George Clooney stop on the carpet and I said, “George, you’re nominated for a number of Oscars tonight. But a lot of people don’t know that you could have been nominated for one more had you accepted the role for June Carter Cash.” And he didn’t see that coming. He expected me to be saying one thing and I went in another direction and it caught him off guard. He really let his guard down and gave me a tremendously funny answer about how he didn’t think he could have filled in the dress the way that Reese did, or something to that effect, and it was one of those great, great moments on the carpet.

Q

Is there one actor you look forward to interviewing, or try to interview, every year? DG: I think there’s one person every

year that you really want to get. I think this year, for us, it will be Leonardo DiCaprio. That’s the guy you want on the red carpet this year. Everyone’s saying it’s his year. This movie [The Revenant] has a great Canadian connection, which is something we always like to focus on with etalk. And, you know, the painstaking job of making this movie, with the elements and the eating of the bison parts. As I’m watching this I’m thinking I could never in a million years survive this, this like “Ernest Goes Up North” — everything went wrong [Laughs]. So you want that interview. That’s the one to get.

Q

These months can be allconsuming for you and the etalk team. How do you find balance? BM: Well, it’s everything. I think the

balance is something you feel. You know. Everybody knows when their life is out of balance. You have a sense of unease as you go about your day. So it’s not hard to identify when it’s out of balance. It’s just you have to put in the work to make sure that you do balance it. So I think www.mycitylife.ca

the biggest challenge is just managing other people’s expectations of you, being present in your work and being as good as you can when you’re doing it, so that when you decide to take off that cap and go home and be a dad and a husband you’re not going to feel guilty out leaving your work. You say, “No, about

I left it all at work. I gave it 100 per cent. Now I’m going to go home and I’m going to give 100 per cent.” CTV’s etalk is the exclusive Canadian outlet covering the red carpet show live for Canada. Catch this year’s Oscars on February 28. www.etalk.ca

The etalk OSCAR PREDICTIONS Best Picture? BM: I’m terrible at these. I’m almost always wrong. If I had to guess right now I’d say the momentum is behind The Revenant. But because [Alejandro] Iñárritu won last year [for Best Director and Best Picture, both for Birdman], I don’t know, maybe they’re going to look at Spotlight, which I think is an equally deserving film, and Tom McCarthy did a good job with that. I think the safe money is on Leo and The Revenant, as well as Iñárritu. But an upset is absolutely a possibility. It is the Oscars. Actor in a Leading Role? Is this finally Leo’s year?

Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

DG: I think so. I don’t want to say I can’t say who else would win, but I just feel the performance is a real standout performance. While the other guys in the category are great, they probably wish Leo wasn’t up there. But I do think it’s his year. Actress in a Leading Role?

Brie Larson, Room

BM: I loved the movie Room, so I’m kind of rooting for Brie Larson in that category. And the fact that it’s a Canadian co-production doesn’t hurt either. But Saoirse Ronan, in another Canadian co-production, Brooklyn — I mean, this is her introduction to the world. She’s been in a number of things before, but in her first real starring turn she did a tremendous job.

Best Director? DG: I think it could be Alejandro Iñárritu for The Revenant. That would be two in a row for him, which would be great, and also a great story. And also: give the guy something. I mean, look what he went through, shooting with only natural light in the elements of Alberta. Sounds like a nightmare. Alejandro Iñárritu, The Revenant

From peels to laser therapy such as the Pearl procedure, her proven medi-spa treatments address fine lines, wrinkles, acne, sun damage and lifting, providing safe and beautiful results. “It’s like working out,” Centraco explains. “We work out our body to keep it toned. Our face needs it too.

By using the right treatments, your body can enhance your own collagen, brightening and tightening the skin to a point that you won’t need a filler.” Through one-on-one consultation, Centraco analyzes your skin and customizes a plan that will meet your goals, fit your lifestyle and work within your budget. “Everyone’s skin is different and everyone’s needs are different. I’m only going to give you what you need,” she says. Bring in your current skin care products, Centraco invites. “If we can use them, we’ll finish them up before using anything I recommend. Why waste money?” This caring mentality also extends outside of business. Centraco, who regularly supports the Vaughan Food Bank and Seeds of Diversity, is launching the Maddalene-Rose Foundation, a charitable endeavour that will give back to different causes for children and adults. This year, they’re providing sports equipment to children in the Jane and Finch area. Money for the foundation will be generated through the sale of her new all-natural product line that she’s introducing this spring. With this open heart, Centraco explains that if your skin looks good you’ll feel good, too. “My focus is my clients and I’m here for them 100 per cent of the time,” she says. “As long as they’re happy, I’m happy.”

For the past decade, Walker has surrounded himself with a team of world-class trainers to elevate Integrity Fitness into an award-winning, onestop shop for women’s fitness. “We see 2,000 women a year,” Walker explains. “That’s all we do, and we’ve mastered that craft.” Every week, over 1,000 women hit the weights or break a sweat in a group class at Integrity Fitness’s two Vaughan locations. While many are there for Walker’s proven body-toning instruction, it’s his expert staff that he believes keep programs fresh and effective. Their diverse backgrounds have roots in everything from yoga to weight training and even mixed martial arts to provide unique training options that deliver lifechanging results. “We’re focused on everything the modern woman needs to stay fit and healthy, and that’s constantly advancing,” says Walker. What type of training makes a woman tone and fit?

My Fitness Boutique, a fitness studio where women can train on their own but with access to an expert trainer at all times. Launching this spring, Integrity Fitness is also introducing a tech-savvy fat loss program that will use heart rate monitors to help clients reach the ideal heart rate for maximizing workouts. It doesn’t just end when the workout wraps, either. Walker and his team are launching a social network where women can connect and discuss topics such as fitness and meal plans, as well as have their questions answered in an encouraging environment. It’s through this social network that Walker hopes his clients can express their voice and find the information and support they crave. “Fitness is not a destination. Fitness is a lifestyle,” says Walker. “That’s why our goal has always been to make Integrity Fitness into more than just a gym. It’s a place where women can get in shape, yes, but we’re also focused on helping them find and maintain an all-around healthy lifestyle. With my world-class team, I’m proud to say we’re making that happen.”

A Home for Smiles North Woodbridge Dental’s welcoming atmosphere and professional service brighten smiles across the city

here’s a sign on the door of North Woodbridge Dental that reads, “Your Neighbourhood Smile Professionals.” For owner and practising dentist Dr. Robert Penning, these words carry a considerable responsibility. “It’s not just a nice-sounding phrase,” he says. “Every word, to me, means something.” North Woodbridge Dental is not just a clinic where patients can find a variety of first-rate procedures in general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry and even orthodontic procedures such as the innovative Invisalign system. It’s a practice that also creates and maintains beautiful smiles that patients will want to share confidently and where the enthusiastic staff is committed to the utmost dental standards and long-term dental health. Most of all, it’s a place where patients can feel at home. “As someone who has travelled as extensively as I have, I really love to get to know my patients,” explains Dr. Penning, who’s visited over 20 countries in his lifetime. And it’s not just about what they do for a living, either. A regular day at the office may see patients from four

or five continents seated in the dentist chair — something Dr. Penning feels is one of the amazing things about working in a cultured community like Vaughan. “Patients are sometimes surprised by how we ask about what country they’re from,” Dr. Penning adds. “For many, it’s a big part of who they are, and I take great pride in making them feel like this is a place where diversity is welcomed.” Patients will find the welcoming staff at North Woodbridge Dental go the extra mile to make them feel comfortable. The clean, modern facility is fitted with heated and massaging chairs and flat-screen TVs with access to Netflix for entertainment during longer procedures; an independent water system ensures a bacteria-free environment; and new adult patients are given a free $300 whitening procedure. There are also plenty of smiles. “We like to have fun,” Dr. Penning says. “There’s a lot of humour and laughter in our office,” which maintains a friendly atmosphere to dissolve any anxiety patients may have. While Dr. Penning has run successful practices for over 20 years, his path to dentistry is anything but conventional.

He originally graduated from the University of Toronto as an electrical engineer and worked for IBM, where he received several excellence awards. But at 30, when most are taking their careers to the next level, he decided to step back and forge a new path. He took an interest in his own dentist’s practice, where he appreciated how the profession was part technical, part business and part people. “The bonus,” he says, “was that helping others on a daily basis was actually very rewarding.” After graduating from dental school, Dr. Penning spent eight years practising in the Yukon, where he made several trips flying over remote regions of the Arctic. But during that time, he says, “I always considered myself an engineer who was doing dentistry. I never thought of myself as a dentist first.” Until, that is, he discovered cosmetic dentistry. In his youth, Dr. Penning worked as a photographic model, which provided unique insight into what made a great smile as well as stoking a love for photography. When he opened a practice in the Greater Toronto Area, he began submitting photos of his cosmetic dental work into competitions. Thanks to the creativity and beauty of his implant treatments, a number of those photos were selected to appear in dental trade magazines, including Dentaltown Magazine. “Photography is the cornerstone of good cosmetic dentistry, because it allows you to analyze and communicate,” Dr. Penning explains. A testament to that is the before-andafter wall illustrating the success stories of those who found new confidence through North Woodbridge Dental. “To watch that change when people feel good about their teeth and about themselves, it’s very fulfilling,” he adds. Recognition poured in for his work and Dr. Penning was soon recruited to join the executive of the Toronto Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, where he was eventually named president. This comes at a time when the parent organization, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, is holding their annual convention in Toronto for the first time. Dr. Penning believes this is a testament to all the great cosmetic dentists from Canada that have

influenced the organization over the past few decades. Over time, he grew his practice into three offices, but found he preferred the front-line patient care over the managerial role. He decided to downsize to his current two offices, his flagship North Woodbridge Dental, where he works alongside Dr. Nari Farshai, who moved here after practicing for seven years in Australia, and Schomberg Dental, so he could maintain that oneon-one relationship with his patients. But while he excels in cosmetic dentistry, such as porcelain veneers and teeth whitening, he still enjoys general dental work just as much. For Dr. Penning, success is more than just recognition from his peers. “I think it’s the feedback from patients that really

gives me my daily flow,” he says. “No matter what the procedure is, seeing them happy is what it’s all about.” Dr. Penning’s generous spirit also led him to volunteer in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s Give Back a Smile program, which works with adults who have suffered domestic and sexual abuse. “These individuals have gone through a traumatic period, and the physical damage left to their teeth can make it hard to look in the mirror, to apply for a new job, to start a new life,” Dr. Penning says. Doing this work makes a huge difference, and not just for those patients. “It’s a matter of setting a good example for my sons,” he adds. “I learned that from my parents and I hope that they do similar things in their lives in that same way.” When asked what he feels is the secret to a successful practice, Dr. Penning points to those around him, explaining, “You can be the best dentist in the world, but you need to have the support of your team to reach the highest level of professionalism and care.” Which is why it all comes back to the sign on the front door. “I’m so proud of what our team has achieved. They’ve made our practice one where people are happy to bring their families and call it their own. That’s the biggest reward of all.”

Neece Electrolysis founder Angela Martino is a certified laser technician and electrologist. She keeps up to date as a member of the Federation of Canadian Electrolysis Associations

For over 23 years, Neece Electrolysis has transformed the hair-removal industry. Founder Angela Martino is a certified laser technician and electrologist offering innovative and permanent hair-removal treatments that deliver effective results for both men and women. One of Angela’s biggest recommendations for permanent hair elimination is electrolysis. Many people think electrolysis is an outdated process for hair removal that no one uses anymore, but this is a myth. Electrolysis has been around for over 135 years and has an excellent track record; it is the only permanent removal system that is completely FDA-approved and has the ability to target one hair at a time and ensure accuracy on all hair types and skin types. Electrolysis is also highly successful in completely removing not just coarse hair, but light or very fine hair as well. Another amazing feature of electrolysis is that it can be done on large or small areas anywhere on the body and it removes the hairs right at the time of treatment. The most common question Angela gets asked is how well electrolysis works on hair growth caused by hormonal changes such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Bringing relief to countless women living with unwanted hair, Angela says that hormones affect everyone differently and although electrolysis cannot fix imbalances or cure hair growth, it can permanently stop the growth of existing hair. For the best permanent hair-removal results, visit Neece Electrolysis. www.neecelectrolysis.ca | 80 Carlauren Rd., Unit 9B, Woodbridge | 905-856-8808

In Canada there is also the unique RFP (Registered Financial Planner) designation. Having the right credentials is just the beginning. after problems with her last insurance company, and she wasn’t disappointed. “I’ve switched my car, home and business insurance all over to Rocco Naccarato. His trusted advice, personal service and above-and-beyond commitment to his business definitely shows,” she says. “I’m thankful of Brokers Trust for the opportunity and on-going support,” says Naccarato. “I’m also thankful of Mario Piccone from Piccone Coaching. He provided me with the tools to be successful and to be grateful for my life and family.” While things like home and auto are the obvious aspects of life that need coverage, Naccarato is expanding service into the hospitality industry to protect things like catering and events. And of course, that means protecting the most important event of people’s lives: weddings. Naccarato’s personalized Wedding Essentials service covers everything from gowns and suits to rented properties to dinner receptions to

cancellation expenses to gifts and even honeymoons. “Everything except cold feet,” Naccarato quips. But the biggest factor of this coverage is the liquor liability. If someone becomes intoxicated, drives and causes a fatal car collision the bride and groom can be held at fault and, consequently, sued. “Wedding Essentials provides peace of mind that if anything does happen, you will be taken care of,” Naccarato explains. “If you have coverage for your home, vehicle and business, it makes sense to take care of your wedding, especially considering all the time and money you’ve invested in it.” Naccarato’s work goes beyond insurance too. “I’m very focused on giving back to parents that need help,” he explains. After witnessing first-hand the amazing care and support his family received when his daughter spent time at SickKids, he’s become an avid supporter of the hospital, raising money and also donating his time through volunteer work. “I know what it’s like to have others there for you in a time of need. That’s why my goal is to help you protect what matters most,” Naccarato concludes. “Whether it’s home, auto or your wedding, I’m here to help.”

occo Naccarato wants to help you protect what matters most. For the past five years, the Vaughanbased insurance broker has guided clients toward the best possible coverage for safeguarding their home, auto and commercial investments. But what sets Naccarato apart is the one thing his customers appreciate over everything else: personal service. “I’m there for my clients,” says Naccarato, an associate broker at Brokers Trust Insurance Group. “Whether it’s a flat tire, a traffic ticket or any emergency, you can call me and I’ll be there. I treat my clients like family.” For a proud husband and father like Naccarato, a man you regularly find in a church pew on Sunday mornings, looking after his family is the No. 1 priority. He brings this compassion to every relationship he builds, and it’s a back-tobasics level of service that you just can’t get from a website or over the phone. The casual, no-pressure experience of working with Naccarato doesn’t end after signing on the dotted line, either. “If something comes up with your policy, an increase in price or certain coverage is removed, I’ll remarket to ensure you get the right coverage for your lifestyle,” he says. Principal Enza Marzano-Pellegrini (centre) and the Montessori School of Kleinburg staff

The Montessori School of Kleinburg Advantage The staff of MSK illustrates how the Montessori method develops well-rounded children with a love of learning What are the benefits of choosing a Montessori education for children? A Corrine Manning, Casa Directress: “The Montessori child is encompassed with a fully enriched environment that encourages his/her natural love of learning from birth. He/she is granted the opportunity to manipulate esthetically pleasing materials designed with scientific precision to isolate abstract concepts. These materials call out to this natural yearning for purposeful work. The three-year age mix fosters independent individuals within an interdependent society. This interdependence develops a sense of responsibility and purpose within the child’s community in a graceful, compassionate and courteous manner. All of these benefits give the child a solid social, emotional and academic foundation heading into his/her future.” Q How would you describe Montessori teachers and their goals in the classroom? A Susy Rodrigues, Casa Directress: “The Montessori directress is a guide in the classroom, serving to assist in the growth and development of her students while keenly observing and interpreting their individual needs. The teacher prepares a stimulating space that is orderly, bright and inviting. Learning materials are carefully prepared and set up to promote independence, responsibility and choice. Our intention is to inspire our students to be intrinsically motivated, self-disciplined, to exhibit a love for learning and to have the confidence to take on challenges while

being mindful and morally strong.” Q What results can parents expect to see in their children who attend MSK? A Sharmila Cappa, Elementary Directress: “Parents can expect their children to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members in their learning environment. MSK fosters positive virtues within their students by focusing on character development as well as academics. MSK focuses on developing the whole child (physical, social, emotional and intellectual) so our students become well-rounded individuals who develop a true love for learning!” Q Why is MSK the ideal establishment for a Montessori education in Vaughan? A Pamela Leudke, Casa Directress: “Montessori School of Kleinburg really has it all. When prospective parents drive up for the first time they are awestruck. When returning parents leave the school after day-to-day drop-offs they have peace of mind. The location is like no other in the area. Set on 13 acres, beside the beautiful Humber River, MSK is a safe, scenic and academically rich environment. There are not many other private schools that have real playgrounds, outdoor greenery and an entire forest. There are also not many Montessori schools that teach the authentic Montessori Method or are officially accredited by the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators, like MSK.” Q Where do MSK students end

up later in life? A Lidia Beros, Upper Elementary Teacher, Department Head: “Our students who complete the full Montessori program to Upper Elementary receive a solid foundation of all concepts in all areas of the curriculum. They are well-rounded individuals who are confident and wellspoken members of society. All of our students that have applied to other private schools have all been accepted to their schools of choice. We are proud of our 100% success rate.” Q The school year kicks off in September, but why should parents enrol their children now, in the spring? A Enza Marzano-Pellegrini, Principal: “Admissions at MSK generally fill up by the beginning of spring for the upcoming academic year. We proudly boast that we also have waiting lists for families wishing to guarantee a spot for their children when and should spots become available throughout the academic year. Great education is an investment and I always commend parents that take the time to visit and research my school in advance. Recently, we had our very first enrolment of a child who is not even born yet in our very popular Toddler program.”

WARMTH & WELLNESS

up at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort. Although I am tempted to sleep until 10 a.m., I want to soak in as much of the beautiful Los Cabos as possible before my TRX workout class at Esperanza Resort. I quickly gather myself and walk down to the beach where the sun is

beginning to peek up over the endless ocean. As this liquid gold is pouring through the soft clouds in slow motion, I place my first foot in the rocky, golden sand. Salty wind blows through my hair as I head for the shore. I inhale the fresh ocean air through my nose and exhale through my mouth, which is when it finally sinks in – I am spending the next few days in Mexican paradise. I let the warm, teal water surround my feet for a short walk on the beach before I head back up to the Hilton for breakfast. The one thing I dread most about travelling is the bloated feeling you get when you come home. Your daily itinerary consists of gluttony in the amazing hotel restaurants, which usually have a lack of healthy foods, and then you head over to lie by the pool and don’t move a muscle in your body all day. I’m not complaining about relaxing, of course; I enjoy lounging around, but I really hate the disturbance in my daily routine and healthy lifestyle. At the Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is never a problem. The daily breakfast became my most anticipated part of the trip. The buff et consisted of an abundance of fresh fruits, kale juice purée and omelettes made by a chef exactly to your preference. There was organic honey dripping off the comb sitting on a table if you wanted to drizzle some natural sweetness over your toast. The food at this resort never lacked in wellness or decadence, which made me feel energized and invigorated after every meal. And that’s the point; Los Cabos, Mexico, isn’t your average getaway. Most vacations you spend months www.mycitylife.ca

preparing to look amazing in your bathing suit and then throw it all away the second you get there. Los Cabos is a nice escape from your daily life but doesn’t impose on it. Located on the Baja Peninsula, this captivating slice of Mexico is a two-hour plane ride from California and is a common escape for many celebrities. Maybe it’s the Hollywood influence, but this really is a vacation for the health and wellness lovers who like to relax and have a good time. For the next few days, my itinerary was booked solid: desert mountain biking and an authentic Mexican lunch with Cabo Adventures, an amazing gourmet dinner at Casa Natalia and a spiritual cleansing ritual in a temazcal. By the end of the trip, I discovered

muscles in my body that I didn’t even know existed. I was able to do activities that were not only active, but also fun. I had the chance to take care of my body, feed my adventurous side, learn about tasty organic food and care for my spirit. My last day in Los Cabos was spent back at the Hilton where I had the chance to take in the scenery and rest by the pool. The only activity planned for the day was my one-hour full body massage in the hotel’s spa, which is probably the closest I have ever felt to being in heaven – complete euphoria. For my last few hours before heading off to the airport, I lay in a hammock, reading and letting the warm rays of thr sun seep into my skin and warm up my bones before I got back to the bitter winter air. www.hiltonloscabos.com www.mycitylife.ca

elissa Boloña already has practice in front of the camera posing as a model. At 26, she’s now on the fast track to becoming Hollywood’s next sweetheart. With seven movies in postproduction this year, Boloña has been busy by challenging herself with every role she takes on. “Each role is different,” says Boloña. “Some are fun, kind of happy, and you can see different parts of your personality and your different emotions through them. Some roles trigger different memories for you and it makes you grow as a person and realize more what you’re all about.” Boloña is set to appear in several upcoming movies, which include Cops and Robbers, The Neighbor, The Year of Spectacular Men, Frat Pack, I Am Wrath starring John Travolta and the TV movie The Saint. Boloña says her transition into the film industry has been rewarding yet challenging. Boloña wants to show those looking to cast movie roles that she has the talent and charisma to back her up. Her confidence game is seriously

on point. “I want to feel confident that I’m going to knock it out of the park,” says Boloña. “When you put more energy into working hard, good energy comes back.” Boloña credits the University of New York for her trajectory into a career in acting. While originally set to go to the University of Tampa, a spur-of-themoment decision landed her in the Big Apple instead. “New York is kind of like the breeding ground for acting; that’s where my interest piqued,” says Boloña. After graduation, Boloña started taking acting seriously, nabbing auditions and eventually moving to Los Angeles. So what can we expect from this talented actress in the next few years? Boloña says she’d love to obtain meatier roles and possibly explore other genres like action and comedy. “For me, the sky is the limit, I’m open to new opportunities.” The blond and bubbly Boloña adds that she’d love to own her own fashion business one day. Describing her personal style as cute and sexy with a touch of chic for both day and night, Boloña finds inspiration in the style sense of Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba. Near and dear to her heart, however, is her work as an active philanthropist. Over the years, Boloña has helped raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association, the James Blake Foundation and the J/P Haitian Relief Organization. She’s also helped raise $200,000 at a charity poker tournament sponsored by the Clinton Foundation. From an early age, Boloña watched her mother often participate in charity work. The value of helping others has resonated with her and plays a big part in her image today. “One year, my sister and I helped wrap gifts into the wee hours of the night for underprivileged children,” remembers Boloña, a proud dog owner who would like to start her own charity to help sick animals. Her ongoing efforts to help those in need have also earned her an accomplished spot on the New York Observer’s Top 20 Philanthropists Under 40 list alongside the likes of Olivia Wilde and Zac Posen. “That was a huge deal for me and a really big honour.” www.melissabolona.com www.mycitylife.ca

Y

ears ago, Tiziana Cannella was sitting at home when a gift commemorating the birth of her baby arrived at her doorstep. Brimming with fresh strawberries, pineapple and grapes, the Edible Arrangements basket was the first one she’d ever received, and it’s something she’s never forgotten. “I thought it was such a great idea. The memory of me and my middle child enjoying the fruit is still fresh in my mind; we had such a good time.” Delighted and impressed with her experience, Cannella began sending her family and friends baskets of Edible Arrangements to mark their birthdays and anniversaries. “I remember saying, ‘I wish there was an Edible Arrangements location close to home because at the time there was only one in downtown Toronto. So my husband and I decided to fill out a franchisee application and see what would happen. And that’s how it all started.” Ten years later, Cannella beams with pride as she and her dedicated staff ring in a decade of success servicing clients from the Edible Arrangements location in Maple, Ont., on Rutherford Road in

Well recognized in the community for her delicious and nutritious fruit baskets, Cannella explains that at the heart of her business is a commitment to quality and freshness. She and her team go above and beyond in their efforts by hand-selecting each piece of fruit

for every arrangement after rigorous quality control measures. “We prepare every basket the day it goes out, and if we’re busy because it’s a holiday, we make sure to come in early and add an extra layer of staff,” explains Cannella. “We sample everything. And if it doesn’t meet our high standards, we toss it.” From chocolate-dipped bananas and strawberries to grapes, cantaloupe, oranges and seasonal picks like kiwi, watermelon and mango, Edible Arrangements baskets are the perfect way to spread the celebration. Apart from the health benefits, the fruit baskets are also known to say “thank you” and “congratulations” in a big way, or “I’m sorry” as they bring comfort to those experiencing a tragic loss or having a bad day. “When anyone opens the door and receives an Edible Arrangements gift, I want them to remember it, enjoy it and smile because of it,” says Cannella. “Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary — I want that arrangement to be part of a good memory.”

What the universe says about you

Astrologer and numerologist Manish Kumar Arora shares his yearly predictions

Aries March 21 - April 19

There will be positive changes in your personality and 2016 will make you wise and far-sighted. This is an excellent year for starting new projects, or taking advantage of any offers or opportunities that come your way. This is a wonderful time of heightened self-expression, eloquence and confidence. Your wit, charm and sound opinions will give you the urge to expand your horizons, try new, bigger and better things, to have more fun and make more money. It’s a perfect time to network, share your ideas and seek out like-minded souls who’ll enrich your life. During the period from June 17, when Venus enters the Cancer sign, if you are single, you are likely to meet someone who is fun, but who is quite a demanding individual. Favourable Dates: 1, 8, 10, 17, 19, 26. | Favourable Colours: Blue and white.

Taurus April 20 - May 20

Pisces Feb. 19 - March 20

You will stay very organized and want to be creative. You’ve been through a lot, and you are ready to finally see that silver lining. A strong friendship could turn into something romantic from April to August. You are nearing the point where work, success and recognition are well within your grasp. Do your best to be organized and productive. You must also draw upon your willpower and self-discipline. Think long and hard before restarting an old romance from October to December. Allow your beloved to give to you (whether that’s in the material or spiritual realm), and at the same time, make sure that you are doing your fair share of giving to the relationship. If you are unattached but looking, you are likely to meet someone new who is positive, kind and generous. Favourable Dates: 1, 4, 10, 13, 19, 22. Favourable Colours: Blue and red. 50

Feb/March 2016

Your ability to initiate and accept change will help you excel. Your varied experiences will allow you to branch out and pursue a wider variety of interests that will contribute to what you have to offer. Changes made to your financial situation will bring strong results. Watch for disruptions in personal relationships and general plans from March 24 to Aug. 2, when Saturn becomes retrograde. From Aug. 3, you will feel energetic and showing your leadership skills will work for you. Time spent doing a good job will ensure that you have more work coming your way. You will be blessed with good fortune. Love is highlighted from Aug. 22, and spending extra time nurturing a relationship that is important to you will help enhance the connection. Favourable Dates: 1, 3, 10, 12, 19, 21. | Favourable Colours: Yellow and white.

Gemini May 21 - June 20

Your communications and focus may largely revolve around your life path or career. When the Sun enters the Aquarius sign on Jan. 20, you may want to converse with someone about what you should do with your life, what direction you’re going in, how to get what you want or how to build a stronger foundation for your life. Your plans and goals will come to successful fruition and your answer will be a resounding “yes” to new professional initiatives. During the period from June 17, when Venus enters the Cancer sign, you may feel more romantic, or want to spend more time doing something artistic. You may also want to seek out a romantic partner, if you’re unattached. Trusting your intuition will take you further than trying to chase frantically after something that’s blowing in the wind. Favourable Dates: 2, 5, 11, 14, 20, 23. Favourable Colours: Purple and green. www.mycitylife.ca

horoscope

Cancer

Virgo

June 21 - July 22

Aug. 23 - Sept. 22

Your focus is crystal and sharp. Putting your energy behind projects at work will alleviate stagnation and provide stability to get off the ground. During February to May, you may also be inspired and motivated to spend time in building new relationships and connecting with new people, perhaps even around new projects or new interests. You are open to expanding your knowledge base during this cycle and communications from or with someone far away may be part of the picture. Things continue to be optimistic in your expectations, but you could feel things being somewhat out of proportion from June 20 onwards in terms of where you thought relationships stood. You need to spend wisely and curtail impulsive spending. In relationships, trusting your intuition right now will take you further than trying to chase frantically after something. Favourable Dates: 3, 7, 12, 16, 21, 25. | Favourable Colours: White and green.

Leo July 23 - Aug. 22

The time is favourable for you to complete your planned projects but you will need to make clear strategies. You will not face many upheavals in your life but sudden expenses may increase your stress. You could accomplish your goals in this duration. A focus on your goals and positive efforts will widen your sources of income. Some indecisiveness is possible from July 22 to Sept. 22, because you naturally entertain opposing viewpoints. It can be difficult to get a point across or to move about effortlessly. Others may be rebellious, resistant to change or simply hard to pin down. Flashes of insight pave the way to dynamic changes on the job. Stop looking for the romance novel dating experience this year and start looking at what you have right in front of you. Favourable Dates: 2, 3, 11, 12, 20, 21. | Favourable Colours: Yellow and black.

Libra

Scorpio

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

This year will give you more personal freedom and allow you to comfortably show a more unique side to your personality. You can look forward to many positive changes in your life. From March 6, when Mars enters the Sagittarius sign , you may be offered a new position at work which leads to a jump up the ladder. Take a closer look at a partnership that has the potential to help you achieve your professional goals. Love should be included in your agenda from May 9, when Jupiter goes direct in the Virgo sign. You may be feeling like you are in a state of self-imposed powerlessness and restriction from Oct. 23 and holding yourself back from taking steps to expand your business or profession because you fear moving into the future, or because you are wary of getting hurt by a new situation. Favourable Dates: 1, 6, 10,15, 19, 24. | Favourable Colours: Red and white. 52

It is a very positive time for you and an excellent opportunity to strengthen relationships of all kinds. You will enjoy the company of others at this time. At this time you may be feeling full of wisdom. You are asked to share this wisdom, along with your knowledge and experience, with others. The time is right for soul-searching and discovery of the inner realms. Your drive, determination and convincing way of dealing with others will help you get your way. You can make professional gains if you are practical and realistic. You could find that your talents or skills are especially appreciated. After Oct. 23, when the Sun enters the Libra sign, emotions will surface and sensitivity will mount. It’s all about focus, refusing to let the little things bother you and being emotionally balanced. Favourable Dates: 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 19, 20. | Favourable Colours: Yellow and white.

You may be feeling highly energetic and lively. You will magnetically attract more wonderful things to you, magnifying and enriching your life. There could be news of pregnancy or motherhood for ladies. Opportunities to enhance or attract romance occur from April 30 when Venus enters Taurus. You will gain a new relationship or a new partner that will change your life for the better. Favourable Dates: 1, 3, 10, 12, 19, 21. Favourable Colours: Yellow and white. www.mycitylife.ca

Sagittarius Nov. 22 - Dec. 21

You have been pursuing and moving forward in your profession steadily. If your current situation seems to require more experience than you can call upon, be open to the presence of a teacher or mentor in your life. Support of the establishment and respect for the rules are emphasized. The traditional way of doing things must work most of the time. Trust in yourself, and in whatever powers you believe control the universe, to help you through difficult times. From April 30 when Venus enters Taurus to Sept. 23 when Venus leaves Libra, let the infinite energy of the divinity warm you and rejuvenate your soul to provide the strength and clarity of purpose you need to continue on your journey. You must combine the solidity of material existence with the waters of your emotions and of your spirit. Favourable Dates: 3, 8, 12, 17, 21, 26. Favourable Colours: Blue and white.

PARENTING

Raising a Grateful Generation How a consistent and authentic gratitude practice is an important quality to cultivate in us and in our children Written By Monisha Vasa

3 Focus on your own gratitude practice:

A

lbert Einstein once said, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” As a psychiatrist and a mother, I am blessed with many teachers: my patients and my children. And these teachers remind me, every single day, that how we choose to focus our eyes and attention largely creates our experience of the world around us. As Einstein so perceptively noted, cultivating a mindset of gratitude almost always has nothing to do with what we have in our lives. Gratitude is about noticing what we do have, rather than noticing what we don’t have. Gratitude is always available to us, in 62

City Life Magazine

children often struggle with returning to school after a holiday. Trying to elicit gratitude for the privilege of attending school at that particular time often falls on deaf ears. However, when I ask them to list things they feel “excited” about, they can genuinely mention seeing teachers and friends, or meeting a new classroom pet. Allow your children to define their gratitude in a way that feels authentic to them, not in a way that feels meaningful to you. Similarly, don’t “force” your children to articulate gratitude in the midst of grieving or an upsetting loss. Let them feel their feelings first, and eventually move into a place of gratitude when it feels right. 2 Notice the small things: In this era of modern technology, it can be helpful to take time to return to simpler pleasures in life and draw our attention to them. Children may not realize that running water, electricity and the food on the table are luxuries in many parts of the world. Similarly, we often forget the pleasures of the “little” things, like the feeling of soft grass beneath our feet, a beautiful sunset or a cosy blanket. Noticing these things is not Pollyannaish; rather, it is a choice that requires courage, and being intentional about how we view the world.

every moment, if we are prepared to see it. As I raise my children, I am continuously faced with the question of how to instill a sense of wonder and gratitude in them. Or rather, how to create an environment for them that allows them to hold onto the natural mindfulness and thankfulness that children seem to organically have. As they grow, as they are exposed to different life events, traumas and losses, ironically as they “get” more and more material items, it is increasingly challenging to hold onto those natural qualities. Here are some thoughts on how we can help our children hold onto their sense of wonder and thankfulness into the tween and teen years and beyond: 1 Allow gratitude to be authentic: My

Grateful adults raise grateful children. Notice what you are grateful for often, both for the little things and the big things in life, and articulate them to your children. When blessings are discussed casually in everyday conversation, children naturally start to contribute their own ideas. Children almost always model parental behaviour, so there is no more powerful example than a parent who practises what he or she preaches. It’s in the Details DOWNTOWN COMES UPTOWN From the décor to the food, no expense was spared to create the stylish, modern atmosphere of XXI Chophouse AGED TO PERFECTION XXI Chophouse’s beef is on full display in its in-house meat locker, where it’s dry-aged up to 60 days for maximum flavour

Five-Star Treatment Kleinburg’s newest hot spot, XXI Chophouse, “steaks” its claim atop the food chain

M

arc and Ben Graci were brought up to never settle. “Our father always told us to look for the best and the best will follow,” Marc explains as he’s seated with his brother in their latest culinary venture, XXI Chophouse. It’s a sentiment that permeates through every detail of this much-talked-about restaurant, and one that’s propelling the family to new heights. When XXI Chophouse opened its doors in the Doctor’s House last summer it was like a beefy shot of life to Kleinburg’s dining scene. This high-end steak house embraces the five-star standards and cool, modern vibe of Toronto’s most celebrated establishments, bringing that downtown flavour to one of the GTA’s most coveted communities. “This restaurant reflects the amazing experiences we’ve had at top restaurants around the world,” says Marc, noting dining destinations in Las Vegas, Chicago and Miami as inspirations. 266

OUR ULTIMATE “ GOAL IS FOR

PEOPLE TO COME HERE AND SAY, ‘THAT WAS PERFECT’

— Marc Graci

“We refused to cut corners.” That passion is felt in the marble walls, the custom rosewood-handled steak knives, the glass-enclosed wine rack and the meat locker where the premium organic T-bones, striploins and colossal 48-oz. tomahawks, sourced from Paradise Farms, are dry-aged up to 60 days. XXI Chophouse has style, it’s got taste, and most of all: it’s got the food. “It’s quality product, quality service and a commitment to excellence,” Ben explains. “And that’s a testament to the values our father embraced when he started in the banquet hall business 40 years ago.”

In 2002, Ben Graci Sr. added the Doctor’s House to the family’s thriving banquet hall empire, which he launched in 1976 and includes Woodbridge’s Supreme Luxury Event Venue. While the business boomed, the Doctor’s House’s restaurant wasn’t living up to its potential. To elevate the space, they dedicated $1 million to its revitalization, bringing the Chophouse to life in July 2015. Despite the price tag, XXI Chophouse isn’t about the bottom line. “We did this to be our place for friends and families to come and have an unbelievable experience without having to leave the area,” says Ben. It’s also a showpiece for these ambitious entrepreneurs’ long-term vision. An underground cellar is on its way, and in 2017 they plan on starting construction of an 85-room inn and a 4,000-sq.-ft. spa on the property. Aiming to rival the quality of luxury hotels found in major metropolitan areas, Marc explains, “Our ultimate goal is for people to come here and say, ‘That was perfect.’” If XXI Chophouse is a taste of what’s to come, we can’t wait for the next course. 21 Nashville Rd.
