At the beginning of June, Best Buddies Canada, an organization committed to creating meaningful friendships for people with intellectual disabilities, celebrated its 13th annual Thrill of Ascot fundraiser. Taking place at the Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont., a change in location due to race track construction, it brought 250 tastemakers and philanthropists together to support the organization’s passion for change. In total, the event raised over $650,000, bringing the grand total for the amount raised by the organization to over $3.6 million since the first event. “This simple idea of one-on-one friendships for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities has literally changed the lives of almost 200,000 Canadians,” says Rene Pantalone, event co-chair. “Our benevolent patrons have been very generous in sharing our passion for Best Buddies Canada.” www.bestbuddies.ca @bestbuddiescanada

With sweeping views of the ocean, Arte’s residences emulate a Mediterranean lifestyle with expansive terraces
The first true American Riviera’s new oceanfront luxury condominium celebrates Antonio Citterio’s debut in the United States — in Miami’s exclusive Surfside WRITTEN BY STEPHANIE CLARKE
A
ntonio Citterio, known as the Italian master architect who designed Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, has announced sales for Arte. This is the architect’s first project in the United States, and it consists of luxury condominiums constituting the next chapter of Miami’s Surfside. Widely considered the first “American Riviera,” the 2.6-square-kilometre neighbourhood seems poised to continue its growth with Citterio’s latest addition. Arte is a beachfront property that sits on an acre of pristine land in Surfside’s enclave. It offers potential residents 16 luxurious residences in a 12-storey boutique development. The prices reflect the high level of care and quality put into every unit, with price tags beginning at $10.2 million. Citterio’s oceanfront condominium offers potential residents
the novel opportunity to own property at one of the few residential designs he has completed worldwide. Arte’s residences effortlessly recreate a Mediterranean mindset, complete with breathtaking ocean views and delicate terraces that blend seamlessly into decidedly modern living areas. The condominium’s kitchens continue the standard of high-class sophistication, offering Poliform cabinetry, Gaggenau appliances and Italian marble countertops. Of course, the luxury condominium experience wouldn’t quite be complete without impressive amenities − and that’s exactly what Arte provides. With an outdoor swimming pool, a 23-metre indoor swimming pool, a yoga studio, a cutting-edge fitness centre and even a tennis court situated on the building’s roof, Arte’s amenities rival those of many resorts. Additional facilities include a children’s
playroom, catering kitchen, residents’ lounge and private parking spaces that offer residents temperature control to keep their vehicles in prime condition. Arte is aptly named, featuring artful design, as well as carefully curated artwork displayed within the building. This love of quality artwork is capped by an original ART sculpture crafted by American artist Robert Indiana. Readers might be familiar with his well-known LOVE sculptures. The building’s carefully designed lobby will also be home to artist Olafur Eliasson’s Polychromatic Chronology. With the first closings set to begin in summer 2019, offers are beginning to roll in. Arte is situated at 8955 Collins Ave. in Surfside, at the centre of the area’s most vibrant community, including diverse culinary, cultural and shopping options. www.artesurfside.com

It’s the peak of luxurious privacy for a select few, with breathtaking views and an unparalleled interior that creates an open yet intimate space
Roberto Cavalli built a luxe fashion empire. Now he’s redefining luxury for his personal life in an intimate way on the open sea WRITTEN BY DONNA PARIS
S
ometimes, the ultimate luxury means the ability to enjoy a magnificent setting in a private way. And so, a few years ago, world-renowned fashion designer Roberto Cavalli decided to move on from his yacht, the 41-metre Baglietto RC, well-known for lavish parties with VIP guests. Cavalli approached the same luxury yacht architect, Tommaso Spadolini, to design a new vessel. This time the brief was different: for private cruising only with his partner, three crew members and up to four guests − plus his two dogs, Lupo and Lapo. As Cavalli has a nautical licence, he wanted a smaller boat to be closer to the water, so he could drive it himself. And that is what he got: the 28-metre M/Y Freedom. The yacht is breathtaking − two sweeping arches frame the aft cockpit, which help shield the space
from the wind. Cavalli wanted something sporty and aggressive that would reflect his personal approach to life at sea and his strong personality. His inspiration? The Dark Knight himself, a boat that Batman would drive, he said to the designer. As for the interior, the challenge was to maximize the contact with the sea while ensuring uncompromised privacy. Cavalli specified that his own suite should be on a raised level behind the pilothouse – a first on a yacht of this size – with allround sea views and natural ventilation. This meant devising a split-level layout, with the main salon on the main deck aft and the owner’s suite just four steps up on the same level as the pilothouse. To ensure privacy, Cavalli’s suite is accessed by a staircase from the main salon that also serves as a private lounge when there are no guests. And
to provide close contact with the sea, the aft deck cockpit is much lower than normal, functioning as a continuous outside space with sliding glass doors on three sides. A VIP suite and guest cabin are nestled in the lower deck, along with the galley/dinette and crew accommodation. Cavalli handled the interior design himself. “My style is eclectic, and I chose a lot of African animal-skin prints for the upholstery, cushion covers and bedspreads, a theme in some of my fashion collections,” he says. “I’m also a keen photographer, and the bulkheads are decorated with panoramic photos taken during my travels.” Cavalli is overjoyed: “I am to spend as much time as I can on board … and hopefully live aboard until September.” www.robertocavalli.com

Andaz Toronto-Yorkville Hotel will occupy floors four to 16 of Canada’s tallest building, Toronto’s The One
ANDAZ AT THE ONE Andaz Toronto-Yorkville — the perfect luxury boutique hotel in The One WRITTEN BY RICK MULLER
W
hen you are developing the tallest building in Canada at the heart of the nation’s largest city, it’s important that all the elements within perfectly reflect the luxury, quality and brand of the overall development. Mizrahi Developments and leading global hospitality company Hyatt recently announced that The One, Canada’s first “supertall” building, will be the home of the first Andaz luxury boutique hotel in the country. This is a natural fit between the two established brands. “We studied all the different brands that could have occupied The One, and Andaz is the right brand fit,” says Sam Mizrahi, president of Mizrahi Developments, which is developing The One. “Only Andaz has the diversity in its brand value system that spoke truly to the international mosaic of cultures that Toronto has become and Canada is now known for.” The new Andaz Toronto-Yorkville boutique hotel
will occupy floors four through 16 of the 85-storey mixed-use tower now under construction on the southwest corner of Yonge and Bloor Streets in midtown Toronto. The hotel will feature a 160-room luxury hotel experience, offering more than 15 luxury suites, more than 12,000 square feet of event and conference space, contemporary food and beverage experiences, a spa and more. “Yonge and Bloor Streets are the crossroads to one of the most multicultural places in the world,” says Scott Richer, Hyatt’s vice-president of Real Estate and Development in Canada. “Given the confluence of architecture, design and sheer quality that this project represents, we could not have found a more suitable location by which to bring the immersive and vibrant Andaz brand to Toronto.” While global in scale, Andaz maintains a local perspective, weaving together the sights, sounds and tastes of each property’s surroundings to create a original and distinctively local experience. The luxury hotel brand’s philosophy was extremely attractive to Mizrahi in his search for a hotel partner for The One. “Andaz actually means ‘personal style,’ which is what The One is all about in its hotel philosophy,” says Mizrahi. “With Andaz’s current 19 hotels open worldwide, no two hotel experiences in regards to their design esthetics are alike, because they are tailored to the rich heritage and design history of the individual cities. This is the new format of international hotel luxury, where the experience becomes very authentic, individualized to its environment and not synthetic or formula-built.” Indeed, Andaz Toronto-Yorkville and The One will complement each other. The new hotel will be located in what is certain to become a landmark experiential building upon its opening in 2022. At a soaring 1,013 feet, The One, with its striking architectural design, champagne colour and dynamic lighting, will be the definition of a “statement” building. In good company on Toronto’s skyline − acknowledged to be one of the world’s top 10 — The One will be the city’s second-tallest structure after the legendary 1,815 foot CN Tower, completed in 1976.
Construction of The One began in August 2017, and the project is already 75 per cent sold. Available suites range in price from $2.159 million for 1,352 square feet to $24.149 million for a 6,137 square-foot penthouse. The project will anchor Toronto’s “Mink Mile” of Bloor Street West, home to some of the world’s top luxury brands, such as Tiffany & Co., Chanel and Gucci, and will be adjacent to Yorkville, Canada’s toniest neighbourhood, full of cafés, bistros, boutiques, art galleries and independent salons. The high quality of The One’s design and the attention to detail, using only the finest finishes, reflect the values of Sam Mizrahi and Mizrahi Developments, one of Canada’s most respected developers of custom luxury homes and residential condominiums in Ottawa and Toronto. “To create timeless design is a fundamental value system at Mizrahi Developments,” says Mizrahi. “Also, to build the best in quality with no compromises and build with the best materials and craftsmanship. We want everyone who comes into contact with our developments — the neighbourhood, residents, stakeholders, the community — to feel better because of that contact than they felt before. That’s our measure of success.” Mizrahi fully realizes the importance of The One not only to Toronto, but also to Canada on the world stage, and the partnership with Hyatt and Andaz Toronto-Yorkville only emphasizes that. “It is very significant, because it will set Toronto on the path of its status as an international city, as Andaz is the true, new next generation of international luxury hotels,” says Mizrahi. “This collaboration forges the relationship for Andaz to have secured one of the most important corners in Canada to debut its hotel concept to the Toronto market.” Esthetics, quality, design and luxury feel — in every way, the partnership between The One and Andaz Toronto-Yorkville is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. www.hyatt.com www.onebloorwest.com

Q&A WITH
ART
Marjorie Goodson
With over four decades of dance experience, Marjorie Goodson is someone infatuated with the art of movement. Here, the New York native and dancer, artist and author talks about passion, aging and why it’s important to move in a new direction INTERVIEW BY CECE M. SCOTT
Q. MG was moody, sensual and gritty, whereas MG.2 is electric and bold. What inspired this new spirit, and how did you go about achieving it? A. It was very important to move in an entirely different visual direction with MG.2 − for the sake of the viewer and myself as the artist. It was essential for me to create a visual shock and elevation in energy, which was achieved by using bright, bold colours and, in most cases, keeping the background stark white. I wanted to create a very modern, futuristic vibe and needed to play the other end of the visual spectrum. I loved the idea of working with different elements like paint,
Her style, which ranges from bright and bold to modern and futuristic, is an essential part of her process
powder and smoke. I wanted to accentuate the physical state by not controlling how I used them in their execution. The notion of pouring or throwing paint on my body was far more interesting to me, artistically, than mere placement. In their natural state, these elements created their own choreography that was wild and unpredictable. I felt equal parts artist and scientist, and soon began to experiment with these elements or, as I call them, “my dance partners.” Q. What fascinates you about the unpredictability of elements and their individual physicality?

SUMMER 2019
PHOTOS BY ANDREEA RADUTOIU
Q. How has following your passion inspired and illuminated your life? A. There is a resurgence that happens as artist and human. It’s as if you are “feeding your soul” with this powerful fuel that energizes you and ignites a sense of self. As someone who has struggled with low self-esteem, dancing and creating, these art books have been the most liberating, empowering and illuminating experiences of my life.
MARJORIE GOODSON A. For me, as creator, it feels limitless and freeing because you have no control over the outcome. The very random nature of being unpredictable invites uniqueness to the work because no two images are ever the same. The magic happens in an instant, without justification or explanation. It’s an extraordinary moment. And then it’s gone forever. Q. What were the challenges in creating MG.2, especially as it relates to smoke and powder? A. Those were my greatest challenges, as breathing quickly became a problem. My vision in working with white and blue powder was to create a
“fight-like” energy. To do this authentically, I insisted on being engulfed in powder. Although safe and non-toxic, the massive amounts of powder used was claustrophobic, and the surgical masks did little to shield my burning lungs. With each dance step, I was literally fighting to breathe. On the lighter side of working with “blue” powder, by the end of the shoot, my team and I looked like Smurfs. Q. MG.2 was a step into the unknown. How did you feel when you emerged from that unfamiliar place? A. I felt accomplished and validated as an artist
because my gamble paid off. Q. At 51, when you were creating MG, you said you were riddled with uncertainty and self-doubt. Now 56, what’s changed? A. I became more confident and clear with my ideas and wanted to take my artistry to the next level. Today, I’m in the best shape of my mental and physical life. Getting older is a fact, but how we get older is a choice. I choose an energetic and inspired life.

As part of this effort, the foundation, which began in 2018, runs an annual track day at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, bringing together automotive enthusiasts, corporate partners and celebrity guests. “We believe it’s important to support our communities and build a healthier
and brighter future not only for ourselves, but also future generations,” says Francesco Policaro, CEO of Policaro Group. “It’s our responsibility as citizens and a successful business to give back.” This year’s event ran with adrenaline in mind, and offered attendees a number of experiences across different tracks that included a 1.5-kilometre go-kart track with 12 turns and elevation changes, a Porsche Sport driving school with Porsche Sportcertified instructors and the opportunity to ride shotgun with a world-class Policaro Motorsport driver in cars that were specially modified to

THE PORSCHE PANAMERA GTS: THE ELEVATED EVOLUTION OF THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE SPORTS CAR
I
In every way and from every angle, the Porsche Panamera GTS is pure performance personified
GENERAL SPECS ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION: TWIN-TURBOCHARGED V-8, PDK GEARBOX, ALL-WHEEL DRIVE POWER: 453 HP TORQUE: 457 LB-FT 0-100 KM/H [0-62 MPH]: 4.1 SECONDS TOP SPEED: 293 KM/H [182 MPH]
WRITTEN BY RICK MULLER
n the automotive world, few names carry the power, prestige and tradition of Porsche. There is just something about the brand and the car, through its style, design and performance, that speaks to even a casual observer of cars and racing. Porsche is a name that cuts across ages and cultures, reflecting the best in automobiles. Porsche has now shifted this into overdrive with the introduction of the Panamera GTS allwheel-drive automobile − optimum performance wrapped in a sleek, stylish and sophisticated exterior sure to turn heads. But you’ll need to look quickly to observe the power the Panamera GTS possesses. At this upper echelon of top-performing sports cars, the hood is always under the microscope, and this is where Panamera GTS separates itself from the pack. Its twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder engine has between 6,000 and 6,500 revolutions per minute (RPM), and the Panamera GTS moves from zero to 100 kilometres per hour (km/h) in just 4.1 seconds, with a top speed of 292 km/h.
This is serious speed for a sports car available to the driving public. Porsche engineers, already at the top of their field, have combined the prestige of Porsche with the concept of a Panamera and the GTS principle — unadulterated, powerful driving pleasure that merges the top performances from the racetrack with the desired great sporty performance for everyday enjoyment. The Panamera GTS includes a four-year, 80,000-kilometre limited warranty and a roadside assistance package. The interior of the Panamera GTS exudes the opulence expected from the Porsche brand, as the black leather interior is accented with Alcantara. Alcantara is a microfibre suede-like material manufactured in Milan, known for its quality, durability and stain resistance. It’s used as a flameretardant driver seat in Formula One race cars. Alcantara was developed in the 1970s as a longlasting synthetic alternative to animal products. Even the rim of the multi-functioning steering wheel and the roof lining are finished with Alcantara in the Panamera GTS. This sports car features 18-way adaptive sports
seats, carefully thought out and ergonomically designed for maximum comfort (including “GTS” logos on the headrests). And the luxury also extends to the trim and doorsill guards, made of brushed aluminum with a black anodized finish. The Panamera GTS offers the option of an equipment package either in carmine red or chalkcoloured thread. This includes stitching on the dashboard, the door panels, the seats, the armrest in the centre console and on the floor mats. Even the seatbelts are co-ordinated to match your colour selection. For serious aficionados of power, and those who embrace luxury and the combination of comfort with sophisticated style, the Panamera GTS, with a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of C$146,200 (US$110,100), is the next generation of high-performance sports cars. When you’ve been leading the pack for so many decades, the Panamera GTS is the evolution to the next revolution — just what you’d expect from legendary Porsche. www.porsche.com/canada

CREATING LIFE THROUGH THE ART OF SCULPTING Lorenzo Quinn, the creator of monumental and expressive works that centre on humanity’s relationships with each other and nature
Lorenzo Quinn’s sculptures are living testaments to his belief in the force, power, eternal values and worth of each and every one of us
F
or Lorenzo Quinn, sculptor, poet and jewelry artisan, actualizing the person one sees reflected in the mirror is definitive of his philosophical take on life, art, family and the responsibilities of being a citizen of the world. “My general motto is ‘Give and receive’; in fact, the circle is the symbol I use for my jewelry brand. The more you give, the more you receive. If you give love, you will receive love back; if you give hate, you receive hate back,” Quinn says. A dedicated family man, Quinn’s persona as an artist and a man are one and the same. Both are inspired by passion and emotion. “Unlike a lot of men, I am unafraid to connect with my emotions. My intention is to carry positive messages through my art; all of my sculptures carry a message. The same questions I ask myself in my life, I ask myself in my art. With so much in the world worth talking about, why talk nonsense? Instead, why don’t we talk about things that are meaningful?” The love and commitment that Quinn has for his family − his wife Giovanna (to whom he has been married for 31 years) and sons Christopher, 25, Nicholas, 23, and Anthony, 13 — resonate throughout our conversation. “Everything I do, in one way or another, is inspired by my family,” Quinn says. “Their well-being is the one constant in my life. My nature themes are tied to my children’s future; my theme of love is tied to my relationship with Giovanna.”
Quinn is the fifth son of two-time Academy Award–winning actor Anthony Quinn, who was the star of such epic movies as Lawrence of Arabia, Zorba the Greek and La Strada, as well as a Mexican-American whose family moved to California when he was quite young. “My father was an incredible character,” Quinn says. “He was from a different age. I was always aware that I was in the presence of someone who had incredible willpower and incredible talent. Dad lost his father when he was 11 and had to become the man of the house, supporting his mother, sister and grandmother. He was a man who had been very, very hungry — he often had no food; he was very poor. But my father managed to make his dreams come true by working, working, working. He always said that you had to believe in yourself, that if you worked hard, success would follow.” Following in his father’s footsteps, Quinn tried his hand at acting in the late 1980s, appearing in the 1989 movie Stradivari. He played the young Stradivari, the Italian violin maker, while Anthony played the adult Stradivari. Quinn also starred as Salvador Dali in the movie Dalí, for which he won the best new actor award at the Biarritz Film Festival. Acting was not Quinn’s dream, however, so he took up painting, a discipline that he found too flat for his creativity. In awe of women’s incredible gift of giving life, Quinn found that creating sculptures was his way of giving birth — of bringing something
to life. “My sculptures are my little babies,” he says with a laugh. Living in Italy, Quinn was inspired by the works of Michelangelo and Bernini. But, he says, “while I was in awe, at the same time I was very depressed, because I was looking at these masters and thinking their level of perfection was unreachable for me. Then I realized I was not in competition with them. Instead, I had to find my own niche.” The greatest creative challenge Quinn encounters when sculpting is identifying the initial idea and concept of the work, because with everything he creates, a message must be imparted. “My sculptures are not meant to be decorative objects,” he says. Each sculpture’s process begins with identifying the subject matter, followed by the title. Quinn then writes an inspirational poem that is key to creating the sculpture. “It is a complicated process, one that can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months for the larger pieces, which can be 50 feet tall,” Quinn says. “Also, with the public installations, there is a lot of planning, which requires proper engineering for safety; as such, we employ a fulltime engineer.” Nature, relationships, love and climate change, as well as ineffective and misinformed political leadership, are important thematic causes and reasons for Quinn to take a creative stand. One of his many emblamatic pieces, The Force of Nature, was inspired by the 2004 tsunami in Southeast

Asia. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives, and with that in mind, Quinn created his seminal piece, which profoundly captures nature’s wrath. “We think we are all-powerful, but there is a force above us that we have to respect, and we are not doing that,” Quinn says. “I believe in an energy and I speak to the energy quite often; I am connected to it.” Another resonant Quinn sculpture is Hand of God, inspired by the transcendent poem “Footprints in the Sand.” A little over 20 years ago, Quinn, who has lived in Los Angeles, New York, London, Rome and Barcelona, Spain, felt that as an artist, it was extremely important for him to work in London. And so, he left New York, moved to London and joined the Halcyon Gallery. “It was a dream come true,” Quinn says. “The gallery believes in me and my work. They support my crazy ideas. Not a lot of galleries do that. When I asked for a T-72 Russian tank for the sculpture This Is Not a Game, they made it happen. When I asked them to approach Andrea Bocelli to sing at the unveiling of Building Bridges, they made it happen.” An outsized, expressive recreation of six hands, which represent friendship, faith, love, hope,
help and wisdom, the Building Bridges sculpture was unveiled at the 58th Venice Biennale this past May. “It had always been a dream of mine to have Andrea Bocelli sing at one of my sculpture unveilings,” Quinn says. “For the past decade, I have been sculpting [while] listening to his beautiful voice and songs. I asked the Halcyon Gallery to make it happen, and once again, they were able to execute another of my crazy ideas. Andrea sang, with my sculpture of the six hands as the backdrop. How could anything be better than that? It was the most wonderful moment in my entire career. I was very, very close to tears.” In return, Quinn is attending the Andrea Bocelli Foundation’s charity dinner this July, and is donating one of his sculptures for the event. Coming full circle, Quinn’s jewelry line, imagined in both silver and gold, is inspired by his sculptures, yet another creative endeavour that is definitive of the richness and depth of his artistic spirit. But even with his poems, his takeyour-breath-away, larger-than-life sculptures and his resonant pieces of fine jewelry, Quinn says he still has a lot more to give, a lot more to achieve. “I have so many unfulfilled dreams. The question now is, will I be able to fulfill them?” Quinn says with a gentle laugh. As a nod to President John F. Kennedy’s famous soliloquy, “Ask not what your country can do for you,” Quinn is passionate in his belief that, “we should all be asking what we can do for humanity, not what humanity can do for us. We all need to work together.” While Quinn is touted as an acclaimed sculptor, a creator of monumental and expressive works, it is his viewpoint and actualization of eternal values, his delightful humility and gentleness, that are refreshingly endearing. Quinn’s personality, humble, genuine and gracious, is in and of itself a reflection in the mirror that needs no polishing. Follow Quinn’s next imaginings on Instagram: @lorenzoquinnartist

MUSIC
CHRIS TAYLOR:
INVESTED IN THE POWER OF SOUND Chris Taylor, global president of music at Entertainment One (eOne), has an ear finely tuned to talent, supporting the success of artists such as Drake, Sum 41 and Billy Talent WRITTEN BY JOSH WALKER INTERVIEW BY VICTORIA SCOTT

I really take a lot of satisfaction in seeing artists succeed,” Chris Taylor says, reflecting on a career that’s been focused on music for almost 30 years. “Whether it’s seeing Nelly Furtado perform at the Grammy Awards or watching Drake sell out a huge show in Toronto, those kind of moments have an impact on me. Having a small role in the success of some incredible artists is an honour.” His parents taught line dancing, so music has always been important in Taylor’s life. It wasn’t until he was in law In 2006, Taylor (left, with Drake) started his own music law practice, which grew to have 10 lawyers and 500 clients, becoming the most sucschool, however, that he began to take it cessful practice in Canada’s history more seriously and decided to try his hand at being a rock star. “We put a band together that band three days later. I definitely wasn’t as big started gaining momentum, and that’s when the as Bono, and that was the sign to try something light bulb went off,” he explains. “I said to myself, new.” Armed with a law degree, industry contacts ‘I think I’m going to be a musician, and if I’m not and a habit of seeing live bands five nights a week, as big as Bono in five years, I’ll be a music lawyer.’” Taylor began building a practice dedicated to While his band, One, a rock/reggae group, did finding talented artists and securing record deals see notable success, Taylor eventually reached for them. “I’d been practising in partnership with that five-year deadline. “I turned 30 and quit the another lawyer for nine years, and it was time to
build a firm around the ideas and concepts I had,” he says. “It was stressful, but it paid off. Between 2006 and 2016, it was the most successful music law practice in the history of Canada.” It was also during this time Taylor discovered the band Metric. After struggling to find a record deal for them, he decided to take matters into his own hands. In 2004, he set up his own record label, Last Gang, and put out Metric’s first record. The release not only propelled the band to fame, but also marked the beginning of a record label that would go on to release many certified gold albums. “Our motto was ‘Us against the world.’ It was dangerous alternative music the mainstream industry and record labels didn’t want to mess with. They were bands for the adventurous music lover.” Today, Taylor is global president of music at multinational mass media and entertainment company eOne, overseeing the company’s music and live divisions. He took up the role in 2016, following an ongoing three-year conversation with friend and president of eOne, Darren

Before joining eOne, Taylor founded his own record label, Last Gang, which had the motto of ‘Us against the world,’ representing alternative artists and music groups, including Metric and Crystal Castles
Throop. “It wasn’t something I was looking for,” Taylor explains. “We had 10 lawyers and 500 clients, and I loved that job and the family I was working with there. So it wasn’t by design until Darren brought it up, and the longer I looked at it, the more I realized it was an amazing opportunity to work with him, expand my experience and have a platform that really advocates for artists. This was a global opportunity to do something special.” Change in any industry is inevitable, and Taylor has seen changes within the music industry firsthand, from the impact of vinyls to the rise of streaming services. “From 2002–14, everyone was taking music for free, and no one was lending a hand to protect artists,” he says. “But over the last three years, recording income has increased, so there’s a lot of optimism in the music industry. Artists now, more than ever, are generating

incredible bargaining power for themselves and are able to self-produce music, distribute it around the world and build businesses.” Alongside his work in the music industry, Taylor is a passionate philanthropist. He supports music therapy and is actively involved with City of Hope, a research and treatment centre for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases, and Honey Jam, a Toronto-based organization for young women trying to make it in the music business. He’s also a big supporter of research into Alzheimer’s disease. “These organizations make the world a better place,” he says. “I’ve been fortunate to benefit from being a part of that world, and so you should want to give back and keep the good karma heading in that direction.” www.entertainmentone.com @solicitorct

ART
GINA GODFREY: Life is multifaceted, and for many of us, our passions propel our choices. For Gina Godfrey, her life has been influenced by her desire to help others and create art WRITTEN BY RICK MULLER INTERVIEW BY VICTORIA SCOTT
P
assion for art can be distilled down to an appreciation of imagery. We like what we like for individual reasons. After all, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” It is this appreciation for imagery that set philanthropist, artist and gallery owner Gina Godfrey on an artistic path from an early age. At the age of only 11 months, and despite being unable to pronounce the word, she requested a pencil from her mother. “I’ve always felt I’ve had what I call ‘eidetic
imagery,’” says Godfrey in a sit-down interview with Dolce. “I can recall things that I see and that I hear. My mind is wired to see things people don’t see, and my process is to never stop learning. Anything I’ve actually learned in life, I’ve managed to keep and build on, and I think that’s why my art evolves, as well.” That evolution has made Godfrey one of Toronto’s most respected artists, collectors and curators. Owner of the Gina Godfrey Gallery, Godfrey has, for the fourth consecutive year, been invited to create a sculpture for the Brain Project,

an outdoor art exhibit that raises awareness and funds for brain health in support of Baycrest Health Sciences. “The Brain Project is a good way for me to marry my art with philanthropy,” says Godfrey. “The project was actually started by my son Noah and his wife Erica, who were inspired by the Fabergé Egg Project in New York, and they came up with the idea of the Brain Sculpture in Toronto to create awareness and much-needed funds for brain health in support of Baycrest, a global leader in brain research.”
As part of her many generous works in philanthropy, this May, Godfrey was one of the hosts of a Private Collections tour at the Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences in support of arts and culture programming and the Brain Project. The event showcased collections of art in five private residences, and marked the unveiling of Godfrey’s brain sculpture at the event reception. Godfrey and her husband of more than 51 years, former Metro Toronto chairman and current executive chairman of Postmedia, Paul Godfrey, have long been community leaders and supporters of many charities. In positions such as these, Godfrey brings various skills from many different life experiences. “I’ve always been someone who wanted to help the underdog.” Those experiences include working in advertising, taking a hiatus to raise three sons, then returning to work full time as a citizenship court judge. Focused on her duties, she did not create any art during the eight years she served the federal government. “My office walls were bare, except for perhaps a picture of the queen,” recalls Godfrey. Ever seeking to help out the underdog, in 1979, Godfrey and her husband started the Herbie Fund at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. For 35 years, she served as president and raised millions of dollars to save more than 800 children from 106 countries in need of life-saving surgery. The Herbie Fund has a reputation with hospitals around the world as a best hope for children who require challenging, life-or-death procedures. “Giving the gift of life — what better gift can you give?” says Godfrey. “The Herbie Fund has certainly been the most gratifying to me, personally.” This May at Koerner Hall in Toronto, musical artists Jim Cuddy and Jackie Richardson, among others, donated their talents to Beyond Boundless, a fundraising concert to celebrate the fund’s 40th anniversary and to honour Gina and Paul. Godfrey returned to making art full time in 1996,
revelling in her creative outlet. “I’m contemporary and I’m a printmaker,” she explains. “I create art every day and then post it, and I always have what I call a ‘favourite of the day.’” She also takes lessons learned in art and applies them to her other passions that include interior design, cooking and photography. “It’s all about balance, and for me, organization,” says Godfrey. “What I use in art I use in life, and I did so as a judge. You can’t work all the time; you have to balance your life for your family, your friends and your other interests.” That balance is crucial when you are involved in as many causes and projects as Godfrey. She has served on many boards over the course of her career, including Epilepsy Toronto, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Metropolitan Toronto Zoological Society, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Jerusalem Foundation of Canada. The idea of balance also governs how Godfrey shows artwork at her Toronto gallery. She changes the works about every six weeks or so, and visitors say her giclee prints on canvas are displayed in such a way that even the brightest of them are relaxing, rather than jarring. “I create works to be appreciated purely for their beauty and emotional power,” says Godfrey. Early on in her journey, Godfrey understood one must respond when opportunity knocks, and she encourages others, especially young people, to do the same. “You have to have confidence in yourself, as everyone has a niche in life,” she observes. “Opportunities come to everybody, but not everybody recognizes them or acts on them. You’re given two names in life: one is the name you’re born with, and the other is the name you make for yourself.” Through her passion for art and her hard work for philanthropic causes, Gina Godfrey has indeed made a name to be proud of. www.ginagodfrey.com @ginagodfrey

Brion’s work is fuelled by her interest in travel, art and the natural world, and she’s taken inspiration from locations that include the urban landscape of Miami and the scale of the Namib desert
Alizee Brion: THE ARCHITECT TAKING A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO DESIGN
The founder and director of Light On White discusses the changing cityscape of Miami, finding inspiration in nature and why choosing bespoke is a true luxury
B
orn in France, raised between Paris and London, and with a business based in Miami, Alizee Brion is someone with well-travelled tastes. Fuelled by the forces of culture, art and nature, she is also someone who can connect form, space, light, colour and texture into something that’s as esthetically interesting as it is dynamic, be that a breathtaking residence overlooking the bay or a luxury yacht interior. Her company, Light On White, is an architecture and design studio that specializes in luxury residential projects. She launched it in London, in 2016. “Natural light is the most important part of any space because it’s what changes it, dramatically and dynamically. It can make or break a space,” Brion says, talking about where the name for the studio came from.
“There’s also that second layer in that the white is the paper or blank page of any project, and the light is the idea you bring to that blank page.” While the business itself only launched three years ago, it’s seen her secure clients all over the world, from the sun-drenched south of France and Italy to London, New York and beyond. A year after its launch, Brion decided to move the studio’s base to Miami. “Miami is experiencing a major cultural evolution,” she shares. “It’s evolving so much not just in the sheer number of new developments, but also in terms of people’s tastes and openness to design. I also love that it’s an urban environment that’s so interwoven in nature, with the proximity to the ocean and the lush tropical landscape.” As a brand, Light On White also thrives on Brion’s background in both interiors and architecture, and being able to effortlessly fuse the two. “More often than not, the interior comes after the architecture as another layer that gets added to a project,” she explains. “I think there’s inherently a disconnect with that approach because a lot of the things we need to make interiors beautiful need to be considered at the time of the architecture. That’s what I’m trying to encourage. I think the two should speak with each other.” It’s this attention to detail that’s seen Light On White separate itself from the crowd. As a designer, she makes a conscious effort to stay
away from trends like Pantone’s Color of the Year in favour of making her work more timeless. She urges her clients to go personal when making a house a home, and advises them to “buy for quality, not just to fill a void. It’s better to have nothing in a room than something you’re not in love with.” She also enjoys integrating bespoke pieces into her projects where she can. “Making bespoke pieces is a really important part of our work. True luxury is having something custom-made for you by someone who’s talented, rather than having to look for something that fits,” she says. “We have so many people we work with who can make pretty much anything, so why not take advantage of it if the client and budget allow? We worked with a French rap artist who has his own line of streetwear clothing. He has this collection of sneakers, so we created this custom closet for him with glass shelves and multicoloured LED lights that change colour depending on his mood.” As well as being a designer inspired by the possibility of bespoke design, Brion is an individual particularly in tune with the impact of travel. “Travel and nature are my biggest and constant sources of inspiration,” she says. “I love to travel to remote places and learn from other cultures and environments. Recently, my husband and I visited the Namib desert. The colours and sheer scale of the landscape are just breathtaking, and I came

We were marvelling at how easily things can translate from one medium to another. It was borne out of that idea, and the forms and shapes we like and think are original.” The collection, which will be made up of five to 10 pieces, is set for release in the near future. “The design world is one of the most influential industries in the world,” she continues. “Whether you follow it or not, you are always in one way or another impacted by the spaces that surround you. RESTAURATEUR
The Upper
ECHELONS OF HOSPITALITY Steven Salm has redefined what it means to run a restaurant. Developing and managing venues that take guests on a culinary journey, Salm has permanently changed Toronto’s food scene with establishments such as Arthur’s Restaurant and Planta Queen
F
or many of us, a restaurant is a place of luxury and comfort, a temporary escape from the responsibilities of everyday life. We don’t typically sit back and think about how that oasis came to be. From ideation to design, construction and menu development, a number of factors affect the success of creating a single restaurant. Now imagine doing that 10 more times. It’s not just an exercise of the imagination for Steven Salm; he’s done exactly that since founding Chase Hospitality Group in 2013. Working on his laptop in the back booth of Arthur’s Restaurant, he fits in perfectly with the ambience of the space. Salm has spread his vision across the city, opening restaurants that can only be described as enchanting. “I think a lot of my inspiration and drive came from exposure − living in New York, having the ability to be in a place where dining and being around tons of people in a service environment are very normal,” he says. Salm got a first-hand taste for the industry while working for both BLT restaurants in New York City and for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment in Toronto as a general manager. He was determined to take on a more leading role. “It was always a passion and a drive for myself to be my own boss and have a business of my own [with which] I could shape the dynamic for the future as I saw it,” he says.
In 2013 he accomplished that goal by creating Chase Hospitality Group with co-founder Michael Kimel. The company grew quickly, debuting with the Chase Fish and Oyster, and following that up with fine dining restaurant The Chase. The Colette Grand Café came next, followed by Little Fin, Kasa Moto, Planta Yorkville, Planta Burger and Palm Lane in subsequent years. The company branched out to the United States to open Planta South Beach and has since returned to Toronto with Arthur’s Restaurant and Planta Queen. This extensive expansion was not necessarily the company’s original goal. Rather, Salm describes it as opportunity-based growth after finding individual real estate opportunities. “All of the destinations were so unique, in terms of what they had to offer from a guest experience, that the concept had to follow suit, and we had to create an ambience in an environment that suited the real estate that we found and fell in love with,” he says. Developing these concepts takes a special touch, one that is fuelled by creativity, magic and a little bit of fear, something Salm knows all too well. With this approach, Chase Hospitality Group has opened a diverse selection of restaurants − ranging from classic American to Japanese to plant-based cuisine — all thoughtfully crafted to bring to life Salm and his team’s vision of offering guests an experience that transcends simply sitting down for a meal. Salm’s passion for this business is
unrivalled. Just this year, Chase Hospitality Group celebrated the grand opening of its two newest restaurants, Arthur’s Restaurant and Planta Queen. Arthur’s Restaurant, which opened in January, can be described as an elegant tribute to midcentury eating establishments that provides guests with a simple yet high-quality experience. The menu is brimming with American classics, including matzo ball soup, Dungeness crab cake and the ever-faithful pastrami on rye. Stepping into the space, one is struck by the detail incorporated into the bar and dining room, from the tufted leather furniture, to the suspended ceiling crafted from wood panels that mimic the facets of cut crystal, to the bronze patina that draws your eye to the centre, a feature used throughout the space. The inspiration behind this restaurant is Salm’s late father, a man whose mentorship he credits as having a great impact on who he is today. The design, theme and menu all honour the period in which his father grew up. Guests are transported back in time and reminded of some of the events of that era, which his father experienced first-hand. Planta Queen, the fourth establishment to bear the Planta name, was introduced in March. Chef David Lee’s menu, inspired by his youth, is composed of dishes with a range of Asian influences, including spinach and shiitake dumplings, sashimi pizza and pineapple fried rice. The space lends itself to the Asian influences

that pervade the menu. Metal archways, dragon motifs, exposed brick and custom wallpaper can be found throughout the dining room, lounge, bar and private room. The distinguishing feature of the Planta restaurants is that their menus are 100 per cent plant-based. This may be a deterrent to some diners, but Salm’s mission is simply to provide options for everyone, regardless of their lifestyle choices or dietary restrictions. “There’s no difference between dining at Planta and dining at The Chase; they’re both restaurants, they both have great design, they both have impeccable service, they both have great leadership, [and] they are both part of a company that stands for amazing values. There’s no difference between the two. The only difference [with] one is that there are no animals on the plate,” he says. “Nobody gets out of a $150,000 Tesla and says, ‘It was pretty good for an electric car.’ They say, ‘It’s a pretty awesome car,’ — and that’s the same experience that we’re trying to create at Planta. No one’s leaving there saying it was great for a vegan restaurant; it’s just a great restaurant.” Chase Hospitality Group is committed to running a business that prioritizes sustainability. While Planta boasts an entirely plant-based menu, each of Chase Hospitality Group’s other restaurants boasts a menu that is 25 per cent plantbased. The impetus behind this business model lies in lifestyle changes adopted by Salm and his ensuing realization about his role in environmental sustainability. “About three and a half years ago, I made a significant change in my lifestyle toward a plantbased life and diet, so for me as a restaurateur, I felt a significant shift in responsibility of things that I wasn’t necessarily as aware of, particularly some of the harmful aspects of animal agriculture and how it affects the environment,” he recalls. “So on a personal level, I felt like I had a duty to change the way I was living my life, and then also at that time, with maybe 300 employees and six restaurants, I felt a professional responsibility, as well.” With this shift in its business model, Chase Hospitality Group shows that, even in the hospitality industry, where it can be quite difficult to implement sustainable processes and regulations, steps can be taken to make a change for the better. Not only has Chase Hospitality Group restructured its supply chain to decrease its carbon footprint, but it has also committed to reducing its paper usage in 2019 by 50 per cent. Looking back on this decision, Salm has to laugh at the ambition, considering the company opened two new restaurants this same year, but he feels pride knowing it is on its way to accomplishing this goal by eliminating paper contracts and implementing a new system of emailing receipts instead of printing them. Salm also has the opportunity to help others through various philanthropic efforts. One of the

ART
THE ART OF
Philanthropists Shanea and Dr. David Rakowski know how to embrace life, and they fill it with everything that speaks to them, from art to travel to food. And Shanea’s blog, Shanea Savours, showcases it all. But perhaps even more important is their love for each other, for their kids and their grandkids — and their joy in giving back to the community
T
his story starts with a letter. When Shanea and David Rakowski were travelling in Asia years ago, they came across an exclusive travel guide with a section about Toronto. Shanea sent them a polite letter explaining they had it all wrong. The editors wrote back, asking if she’d like to write for them. “I’ll give it a try,” she said to them at the time. Shanea went on to become a travel consultant, advising people on places to eat, where to shop and what to see. She started typing out lists and making copies for friends. “A few years ago, people kept saying I should write a blog,” says Shanea. So she did. Her blog, Shanea Savours (shaneasavours. com), is loaded with info on travel, food and art, and her Instagram account features beautiful photos of what she loves. David still works part time maintaining a dental practice with his son, and he manages the family real estate portfolio. “When I come home, I like to go to the gym − boring,” he says with a laugh. One thing they have in common? A love of art. Inspired by the vibrant art scene in Miami, where they spend time over the winter, they are both avid collectors and have been to almost every Art Basel show in Miami. Recently, the Rakowskis opened the doors to their Toronto home and let people view their postwar and modern art collection, with proceeds going to the Baycrest Foundation’s Brain Project. “I was happy to see people of all different ages, young and old alike, and to be able to share the enjoyment,” says Shanea.
“I WAS HAPPY TO SEE PEOPLE OF ALL DIFFERENT AGES, YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE, AND TO BE ABLE TO SHARE THE ENJOYMENT” Sometimes collecting works of art is a combination of time and circumstance, with the universe coming together to make it happen. Take their largest artwork, for example, which is a painting by Canadian contemporary artist Jack Bush. As it happened, it was 2008, and the economy had taken a downturn. The couple walked into an art gallery in Toronto’s Yorkville one day and saw one of Bush’s works, which was on consignment, and they offered a bid. Too low, we’ll never get it, they thought as they left. Five minutes later, they got a call telling them they had the painting. The same year and in similar style, the Rakowskis acquired their favourite piece: Ray
Parker’s Untitled, Oil on Canvas, 1963. They fell in love with the painting at the Art Basel show, but they had just purchased the Jack Bush. But it was still for sale when they saw it again at the art dealer’s shop in New York. David told the dealer to give them a call if they could get it down to their price, which was nowhere near what the dealer was asking. Five minutes later, they got the call. “We were afraid to purchase it,” says Shanea, who’d never heard of Ray Parker. “I just liked the picture.” But when she was told that David Mirvish collects them, she went for it. “He’s a big art collector, I thought, so he must know he’s good. So I said, ‘Well, if it’s good enough for David Mirvish … ’” And sometimes, appreciating different art forms is borne out of necessity. When the Rakowskis moved into their condo at the Four Seasons after it was built, there wasn’t much wall space because most of the walls are glass. So they decided to place two sculpture installations on their two balconies. “We don’t go out there, anyway; it’s too windy,” says David. “And it gives us another view of these large pieces.” A love of art isn’t the only thing this couple has in common. Shanea and David went hiking on a recent trip to California. They visited galleries and viewed a private art collection. “We enjoy doing everything together, and my husband always says, ‘I don’t need people, I just need you.’” It’s Shanea who pushes the both of them to travel to exotic places. This fall, they are going to Cambodia and Vietnam. “For David’s 60th birthday, we went to

Africa, and he didn’t want to go, but he said it was the best trip of his life.” They’re both people who get tremendous joy from giving back, especially in support of the arts. “We’re members of TIFF [Toronto International Film Festival] because we love film and we’re members of the Curators’ Circle at the AGO,” says Shanea. She’s on the art committee of their condo as well, helping to select new art for the lobby. David is a senator for The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, an organization committed to countering racism
and anti-Semitism, and promoting tolerance, inclusivity and togetherness. When asked how they want to be remembered, they pause. Shanea and David just want to be remembered for being good people, they say. People who treat others well and with kindness. “A lot of people want to be thought of as great leaders in the community and great philanthropists, and that’s important to me, but our kids and grandkids mean everything to us,” says David. Everything else is secondary, he adds. “We are family people,” he says simply. “I’m

THE MAESTRO OF OPERA Blind by the age of 12, Andrea Bocelli refused to let this condition define him. A lawyer first, Bocelli went on to take complete command of his musical career, a journey that over the past 25 years has seen him performing with musical greats, both young and old WRITTEN BY CECE M. SCOTT INTERVIEW BY MICHELLE ZERILLO-SOSA PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSE MILNS
definition, a maestro is an eminent distinguished musician, a master of his or her craft. The honorific title is bestowed, always, with great respect on the person worthy of such a moniker. Andrea Bocelli, Italian singer, songwriter and producer, is indeed such a person, a musician who has bridged the genres of classical and pop music with great passion, skill and talent. Becoming blind at the age of 12 neither deterred nor debilitated Bocelli, who studied law at the University of Pisa and went on to practise as a state-appointed lawyer for a year before concentrating on performing. As a young singer in the mid-1990s, Bocelli, on two occasions, won the new composer title at the Sanremo Festival, posting the highest marks ever recorded. He has performed with the operatic
greats, including the world-renowned Pavarotti. Selling over 90 million records worldwide, some of Bocelli’s most widely known songs include: “Time to Say Goodbye,” “The Prayer” and “Perfect Symphony” with Ed Sheeran. In early April, a team from Dolce Media flew from Toronto to Bocelli’s home in Tuscany, Italy, to be with the maestro as he reflected on some of his favourite childhood memories, his pre-singing career as a lawyer and his musical influences, which range from operatic greats such as Puccini and Verdi, to international pop icons such as Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Tony Bennett and Céline Dion. As our team prepared for the photo shoot and interview, Bocelli’s voice, accompanied by his piano, flowed through the room, a celestial aura, light-filled and energy-fuelled. The sensation, smoother than molten chocolate under-lit by a
sparkler flame, was both sensual and spiritual. It was a summer breeze aria, full of bright red poppies dusted with the soft fragrance of pale pink roses. When not touring, Bocelli’s main residence is the exquisite 8,000 square foot, pale pink mansion, known as the Villa Alpemare, located in Versilia on the Tuscan Coast. Bocelli’s brother, architect Alberto Bocelli, was a key influencer and adviser in the yearlong renovation of the villa. The mansion’s flow is broken down into three separate compartments, with stunning views of the Apuan Alps, a constant for Bocelli, his family, and honoured guests. Bocelli, serene and calm, shared with us that his strong faith is what lifts him up and inspires him to perform at difficult but poignant events, such as a Ground Zero memorial concert. Feeling the pain of millions of people, Bocelli stated that he is

driven by his affinity for goodness over evil, which allows him to sing with passionate and spiritual perfection. Of course, he said with a gentle smile, he has also given joyfully profound performances for the elite of the elite, including Queen Elizabeth II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II. As he answered our questions in his living room, we all wished we could bottle this once-in-a-lifetimemoment − cherish it forever. But then, of course, this is all possible with Dolce’s feature profile on Bocelli in the current issue of our magazine. Awards abound for the maestro. In 1998, People magazine named Bocelli one of the 50 Most Beautiful People. He was awarded Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2006; in 2010, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; he is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for simultaneously holding the No. 1, 2, and 3 positions on the US classical album chart. His duet on The Prayer, with Céline Dion for the animated film Quest for Camelot, won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. A fan of football and boxing, Bocelli also has a passion for poetry, which, for him acts as a restorative prescription for making the world a better place. At the forefront, always, is Bocelli’s deep love for his family: wife Veronica Berti, sons Amos and Matteo, and daughter Virginia. Q. What are some of your most poignant childhood challenges, the ones that resonate with you and to which you attribute your sense of dedication, passion and outsized success? A. Success follows variables that are often incomprehensible. However, certain character features, such as dedication and the determination to work toward a goal, may have developed in my childhood, after my parents made the difficult decision to send me to a boarding school, which was far from home, so I could learn to read, write and do arithmetic, and thus have the best start in life. At the time, I suffered considerably, but it helped me a lot. And when I myself became a father, I understood how much more my mother and father suffered due to our forced separation. Yet, in retrospect, it was healthy.

Q. You were inquisitive, energetic and talented as a child, knowing how to play the flute, piano and saxophone when you were six years old. Opera filled your house, and it helped to calm you down. Describe what you were like as a child and what child-like attributes you carried into adulthood. A. I was a hyperactive child. Everything was one big game and exploration. Boisterous and curious, I was particularly fond of challenges, even then. When I was advised against something or even prevented from doing it, well, it became my new goal, and I had to do it, better than the others, if possible, even at the cost of much sacrifice.

introduce fans to opera. (You are especially enthusiastic about young people embracing opera.) Please share some details of your highprofile collaborations with pop stars such as Céline Dion, Nelly Furtado and Ed Sheeran. What do these kinds of collaboration bring to your own art? A. You are right. I prefer opera music and, at the same time, I admire the artists you mentioned (and many others, alongside them). Collaborating with these artists was personally a time of allround growth for me. and − if you so wish − more religious dimension. Q. You sang “Ave Maria” during a memorial concert at Ground Zero for the victims of 9/11. Please describe that experience: What did you intuit in that hallowed space? How did you feel? A. Good is to evil what creation is to destruction: one is much harder than the other. And that is the hard truth. For all people with goodwill, it torments the soul to see how dramatically easier it is to sow evil. The goodness of millions of people does not make the news. The evil of a few, on the other hand, spreads inevitably, dividing and generating suffering and fear. That day at Ground
Q. Céline Dion, a highly accomplished talent in her own right, says of your musical gifts: “If God had a singing voice, He would sound like you.” What emotions do you awaken in people that inspire such fervour and excitement? A. Céline Dion is an exceptional artist, as well as a dear friend. I think she was expressing her affection for me with this larger-than-life statement. It is a poetic image that flatters me and which left an indelible mark on the collective consciousness, even though it is deliberately over the top. My distinctive voice is a God-given gift that is probably able to communicate positive emotions and touch people’s hearts. It is a gift for which I can take no special credit. I am honoured and proud that I am able to offer my voice to anyone who seeks the joy of a moment of relief, in music. Q. Your deep spiritual connection is evident in several of your albums, including Sacred Arias (your sixth album) and your duet with Céline Dion on her television special, These Are Special Times, on which you sang “The Prayer” and your “Ave Maria” solo. How has your spirituality sustained you in both your personal and your professional life? A. I am a person who has decided, for many years now, to stand on the side of good. As a Christian, as a practising Catholic, I believe that the key element in my life is faith. This is a gift I try to protect and enrich, and which drives me to apply the great lesson that I find in the words of the gospel every day with others. There is a wonderful quote by St. Augustine: “He who sings, prays twice.” Well, keeping this in mind reassures my conscience in a certain way because, as I have sung a lot throughout my life, I have also prayed a lot. Music elevates the spirit, and when the spirit is elevated, it helps us to descend into a deeper
Zero, I was deeply shaken. I could feel the pain of millions of people. I had lost my father just a few months before, and I was thinking about him a lot on that day in 2011, beneath what remained of the Twin Towers. In his memory, at a difficult time for the entire world, I found the strength to sing. Q. You have performed for queens (Queen Elizabeth II), princesses (Princess Eugenie), popes (Pope Benedict XVI, Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis). As a small boy, who at 12 lost his eyesight, could you have ever begun to imagine this incredible journey? Would you please be so kind as to share for Dolce readers three or four of your most favourite and touching experiences on your journey — ones that have changed, enhanced or altered your life in poignant ways? A. I remember at the end of a concert a man said to me: “I listened to you, and I rediscovered my faith.” Another time, a woman wrote to me,
saying: “Thanks to your music, I have renewed faith in life.” This is feedback that gives meaning to a career and to an existence. They are touching experiences. Life has been extraordinarily generous with me. When I think about pivotal moments, the ones that come to mind include the day I became a father, the first time I met Veronica, my wife, which was 18 years ago now. Yet, I believe not a day goes by that our life does not give us experiences and encounters that can contribute, inevitably, to changing us. Q. You have been a part of many benefit concerts, including Live 8. What are the types of benefits/ causes that speak to you on a personal level and that you like to support? A. Attempting to do good is an act of intelligence before it is a moral duty. We take our seat at the table of life just like at a great feast, and in life, as with feasts, we do well if there is the bare minimum for everyone. And we can all do something, each in relation to our own means. For example, by donating something that is even more precious because you cannot buy it, in other words, donating part of your time. The foundation that bears my name conducts projects for the most vulnerable classes of the population, in Italy and in developing countries. These include education, health and social integration projects. The mission we have chosen is “Empowering people and communities,” and it describes our desire to strive to create occasions for growth and talent enhancement, so that everyone has the opportunity to fully express their abilities. Q. You were an integral part of getting an outdoor theatre built in your hometown of Lajatico, Italy. What is it like going back to perform there every July? Please describe your connection with the people in your hometown. A. I am the child of that part of Tuscany. I am myself the result of that rural culture and the values that have pervaded it over the centuries. My homeland boasts incomparable beauty and is a hospitable place, far from the hustle and bustle. To have big, strong wings, one must be able to count on deep roots, and Lajatico — the place that my ancestors chose to live, work and raise their children − is still my retreat today. Furthermore, the annual Teatro del Silenzio event allows me to welcome many artist friends, practically “at home,” and share so much beauty. Q. Your son, Matteo, sings with you on occasion. Please share some details around this father

and son collaboration. And please share some information around your family and your children. A. My first-born, Amos, graduated in piano from the conservatory, yet was also studying aerospace engineering at the same time; he is now building his career in the latter. Studying music (just as our little Virginia − our princess, the littlest one in the Bocelli household, who has just turned seven — has started to do) is an extraordinary opportunity for inner growth. It is an experience that enriches the soul. It is lifelong friendship, regardless of whether or not you make music your profession.
Playful moments with daughter, Virginia
Matteo, who is 21 years old, was also raised on “bread and music.” He is studying piano, and he is deepening his study of singing, as he is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps. Honestly, I think he’s gifted, that he has what cannot be taught − talent. However, the determination and sense of sacrifice he implements will be just as important. At the moment, he is a student at the conservatory. He will develop his talents and attitudes in his own time. Q. The Bocelli Family Wines label (an endeavour
you share with your brother) has earned the respect of global wine connoisseurs. Describe your love of wine. Also, please describe the particular properties of your family's labels: aroma, bouquet, body, intensity. A. Wine, like good music, is one of life’s great pleasures. Provided, of course, it is not abused, and it is healthy wine that has been made with passion, from the vine to the table. I come from a family with a farming background, and my father also had a vineyard and made wine, which was the pride and joy of his farm. This is a tradition that

my brother and I carry on today. When it comes to Vino Bocelli, I am a passionate connoisseur and supporter, even though I do not actively take part in the company. I insist that my family wines are genuine, that they are ambassadors of the beauty of the Tuscan region and the deliciousness of its fruit. I like the idea that the Bocelli wine expresses a positive and real story in its own way, made up of generations of love for the vineyard, of a mutually generous and respectful relationship, between man and the land where he lives and works. I insist it is a wine that is able to clearly communicate sincere emotions, both in its aromas and flavours. Q. You are described as having an aura of light around you. Please describe that light and what inspires it. How do you sustain it? A. Probably, rather than being inside of me, the light resides in the hearts of those who see it. On my part, I think I can call myself a calm person, and what I want to do through song is bestow a touch of serenity and optimism to those who want to listen to me. I have to stress it is my faith that sustains me: it is such a fundamental element in my life, and I believe it is always crucial for all
people. Personally speaking, I am happy to talk about it anytime the opportunity arises, even in my artistic choices. Q. We understand you have a love for football, in particular, for the Inter Milan team. Please share your excitement around both the sport and your team. What are some other passions that relax you and provide you with much-needed rest and serenity after your extensive multi-country and multi-city tours? A. I am a fan of football, as well as boxing. I am a decent chess player, and I also cultivate a passion for poetry, one that runs parallel to music. I strongly believe in poetry. I think it is medicine for all of us and it makes the world a more beautiful place. I could call my verses “old fashioned” in the sense that I like to write poetry by following the rules of rhyme and rhythm metrics, which I think still hold true today and are useful. Often — also to keep my brain in shape — I write when I’m in the dressing room, waiting to go on stage. Q. You have been quoted as saying, “Destiny has a lot to do with it, but so do you. You have to persevere, you have to insist.” What are some of
the ways destiny has been kind to you? And what role has your own perseverance played in your success and your life journey? A. I do not believe in chance: it is an illusion. I have always trusted in the will of God and His designs, to which I faithfully entrust myself. All the talents of man are undoubtedly gifts from God. God-given gifts can only bring beauty and good to the world, unless man decides of his own free will to make improper use of what he has been given, precisely because he received freedom as the first and most precious of all gifts. Personally, I am in debt with life, not in credit. I have received so much, more than what I have been able to give back so far. And not a day goes by that I do not feel a deep gratitude toward life here on Earth (and thus, toward He who created it) and toward my fellow man. What I can do on a daily basis is raise my eyes to the heavens and give thanks. And ask for help. And, with reverence, whisper, “Thy will be done.” Q. What do you hope destiny has in store for you and your future? A. I hope to be able to see my children’s children be born and grow up, and I hope to be able to still sing, as long as the good Lord wills it. But I don’t

make plans for the future. I concentrate on the present, on the privilege of living every new day. Q. What are one or two things that fans don’t know about you: a young boy raised on a small farm in Italy, who went on to become a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic; a Guinness World Record holder for simultaneously attaining the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions on the U.S. classical album chart; the recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; and a highly respected singer to queens, popes and celebrities? A. What you have just reeled off seems almost like a fairy tale. Yet, you list things that have actually happened. However, it coexists with what I bear in mind, and these are my little vices, my defects, my fragilities, my fears, all things that make me a completely normal person without any special merits. That is something perhaps a fan would not see: the fact that, although I have an unusual profession, I am a completely normal person, in my habits and in my relationships. And woe
betide me if I forget all that. Probably, I would get a big head and start to see the world through different eyes. The dramatic consequence of such an intellectual misfortune would be that this entire fantastic story would fall apart instantly, like a castle made of sand, like badly whipped foam. Q. What is next for you, Andrea? Do you envision writing a follow-up to your 2002 memoir, La musica del silenzio (The Music of Silence)? A. I have nothing planned at the moment; however, never say never. I wrote that book when I was 40, when I felt the need to go back through my life, to better understand the meaning of what had happened to me and perhaps to also draw a lesson from it. I take your question to be a good omen: if the good Lord gives me the chance to double my years, into my 80s, it might be a good idea to recount my second 40 years of life, if my health supports me. www.andreabocelli.com

ALIN LE’ KAL A DESIGNER WITH INTERNATIONAL APPEAL
As the first-ever Melbourne, Australia, designer to debut a collection at Paris Fashion Week, Alin Le’ Kal’s rise within the fashion industry has been nothing short of impressive
A
n RMIT graduate, Le’ Kal’s pieces are built on attention to detail and confident garment construction. With a signature style that relies on slowing down fashion so quality takes priority over quantity, his work has already been worn by numerous celebrities on the red carpet. Even the invitations for the Paris Fashion Week show, created by Giant Invitations, were clean in design and printed on a thick white stock imported from Europe, carrying with them the designer’s approach to esthetic. The collection itself, titled Reflected Elements, was inspired by the nature, colour and scenery of Australia, specifically the textures and natural hues of Queenland’s corals. It was realized with a team of 20 people and a design process that took place over the course of five months. “I lock out a lot − it is a process,” says Le’ Kal. “I cut myself away from any distractions - that means turning off my phone, the television … all technology, and isolating myself. I get in my element by turning on some music and focusing on the creative process.” While being the first designer from Melbourne to debut a collection at Paris Fashion Week is an honour, that’s not to say it’s without its challenges, and he’s had to consider how his work is received on an international stage. “[The European couture market] is very different to what Australia is used to,” he continues. “Australian fashion style tends to be much simpler in their own unique way, as we have fewer galas and big events to wear couture pieces to.” “I want [women] to feel beautiful,” he continues, talking about what it means to be a designer. “If they do not feel beautiful, it will show while they are wearing the dress. It’s all about the feeling.”

HOW PAUL & SHARK IS SAVING OUR SEAS
Spurred by the amount of plastic plaguing Italy’s beaches, the brand launched Save the Sea, an initiative focused on turning the tide in our battle against waste WRITTEN BY JOSH WALKER
F
uelled by a shared passion to raise awareness around dumping waste in the ocean, Save the Sea is a concept launched by Paul & Shark in collaboration with Sardinia, Italy, artist Annarita Serra. “The idea started a couple of years ago when I was on vacation in Sardinia, which has some of the most wonderful beaches in the world,” begins Andrea Dini, CEO and president of the Italianbased brand Paul & Shark, at a Save the Sea special event in Toronto. “These beaches were full of plastic rubbish. Because plastic doesn’t break down and it would take many years to create a solution that does, I thought we could at least do something for the plastic that’s already there.” From there, Dini, eager to make a difference, contacted a Japan-based firm working on developing a yarn made of recycled polyester. While the original prototype that was presented six months later was unwearable, breaking apart within minutes, he remained undeterred and, before long, was able to roll out a solution. That solution is here and is what makes up part of the Save the Sea initiative. More specifically, it is a cotton T-shirt and recycled polyester bomber completely derived from plastic bottles collected and processed in Italy. “Paul & Shark is one of the true environmentally sensitive fashion companies out there,” says Larry Rosen, CEO of Harry Rosen, who both attended and hosted the event at Harry Rosen’s Bloor Street West location. “They are committed to sustainability, to organic cotton, and it’s wonderful to throw an event and celebrate their initiatives … Business is important, but if you can’t look beyond that to important issues like the environment that affect us, our children and our grandchildren, you’re missing something very important.”
“IN LIFE I HAVE TWO DREAMS. ONE TO BECOME AN ARTIST AND ANOTHER TO SAVE THE SEAS. HERE, I’M TRYING TO BRING THEM TOGETHER” — Annarita Serra
The Save the Sea initiative doesn’t end there. Born in Sardinia, Serra is an artist dedicated to creating art pieces and installations from waste gathered from beaches. For Save the Sea, she is creating artwork that will be sold at auction, with the proceeds donated to Canadian environmental charity Swim Drink Fish. “I started about 20 years ago,” Serra explains. “With my work I went to New Zealand and, being born by the sea, came back to find so much plastic on the beaches. I didn’t know what it was, and no one was talking about it 20 years ago, so I started to collect it and create art with it.”
The work itself is nothing short of impressive. In her atelier, which is based in Milan, she glues, nails and drills the collected rubbish together to give it not just new life, but also a new appreciation and perspective. “In life, I have two dreams,” she continues. “One to become an artist and another to save the seas. Here, I’m trying to bring them together.” While Dini is dedicated to protecting the oceans through his work with Paul & Shark today, his eyes are also set firmly on the future. “Five years ago, I asked my product team to use only organic cotton and they did,” he continues. “Now I’m asking them, in three years, that 100 per cent of our outerwear be made from recycled fabrics. I’m fully confident that one day we will come back here and tell you that 100 per cent of our collections are fully sustainable.” He’s also someone who feels optimistic about the future and believes that, if we work together, there’s still time to instigate serious change. “If you go to a supermarket or grocery story, find the products without plastic packaging,” he advises. “Choose them and that will act as a strong message. Also, pay attention to water consumption. In the future, that will be a huge problem, so while you’re brushing your teeth, turn the tap off. When you shower, take half the time. “Now, we are trying to protect the oceans. The other problem is protecting the fish, and so next year we are carefully selecting the right foundations to work with on protecting sharks in the water. We want to protect the ocean from both sides: the water and what lives there.” www.paulandshark.com/savesea @paulandshark www.harryrosen.com @harryroseninc
