EXPO-SIVE MARKETING! Welcome to the May issue of HomeLife magazine. I’d like to take this opportunity to address all business owners and managers in Cairns by introducing the Cairns Life Expo, hosted in June at the Cairns Exhibition Centre - Fred Moule Pavillion, Showgrounds. Here’s why your business should jump in and get involved. Expo’s are a fantastic way to explode your customer relations, get in front of new customers with ease, and basically be “an exhibitionist” - really showing off who you are, what you do, and why you are the very best at what you do. Why take your business to an expo? You have your showroom, shopfront, website, facebook, instagram - all showing your products to your customers. That is: customers who visit your showroom, customers who visit your website and social media sites and customers who are already sourcing your services or products. Your only chance to exhibit your wares is when they make the approach to you.

Take your business to the Cairns Life Expo, and you are in front of tens of thousands of people. You can achieve an explosion in customer relations, an explosion in potential customers, and an explosion of sales leads that can be utilised long after the ‘hoopla’ of the actual event has finished. Cairns Life Expo is a unique lifestyle event that is heavily advertised with a high standard of entertainment and attractions that your business can ‘piggy-back’ - meaning you can utilise the strong marketing and high attendance of the event to give you exposure that is impossible to equal through everyday advertising channels. Give your business a marketing expo-sion, whether you are a small business, market stall holder, or a Cairns iconic business. Costs are low and the potential is massive. The CairnsLife team can help you with any questions or ideas you may have. Contact us on 07 4036 0205.

MY LIFE, WORDS BY JANIE BARTON
“ ”
I love, love, love what I do She bounces out of bed on or before sunrise every morning, runs non-stop throughout the day and never loses her positive approach no matter what hurdles are thrown at her. One of Cairns’ most successful awardwinning women in the building industry is also one of the most energetic people you will ever meet. Heather Ghidella, co-owner of MyStyle Homes with life partner Grant Hartwig, has been setting new benchmarks in the industry since MyStyle was formed in 2011. From her first design, which revealed a dynamic new way of capitalising on a small frontage 450sq m block without compromising the home’s spacious living area, was a huge hit among homeowners and their interest exceeded her expectations. From then on, she has created national award-winning homes that others said couldn’t be done. In 2014 she designed a home with an 8.5 star energy rating and off-the-grid-power supply that was the first of its type in suburbia and won the Housing Industry Association’s Australian GreenSmart Display Home of the Year Award. This year she’s exceeded that award-winning energyefficient design accredited with a 9 energy rating home in Smithfield Village.

“It’s a two-story 416sq m home, which is unusual because most homes that get really high energy ratings are usually quite small,” said Grant, a builder with 36 years experience who brings her designs to life. “This is the first time in the industry a large double-story home has achieved such a high star rating.” When she started in the male-dominated industry she faced opposition from other builders, but her sheer grit and determination have carried her through. “There were so many hurdles from so many different angles because I was pushing the limits in design all the time,” she said. “I got knocked down a few times, but I always got back up.”
MY VISION, PHOTOS BY PEPPERMINT LANE
Heather has won a huge amount of state and national HIA and Master Builders awards over the years, which has promoted the Cairns region into the national spotlight. Heather is also proud to have won three other prestigious awards – the 2013 HIA National Award for the Australian Business Partner of the Year, the 2014 Master Builders Far North Queensland Women in Building Award and the 2014 Cairns Business Women of the Year Award. One of the biggest hurdles she has faced so far is with copyright breaches of her designs. Heather is currently in the middle of her ninth copyright case in 18 months as other designers steal her ideas.
“That is one of the biggest challenges we have faced,” Heather said. “It not only affects me, but Grant, our tradies, suppliers and the whole MyStyle team as well because we are a small, dynamic and loyal team.” But nothing has or will hold her back. “I love, love, love what I do,” said Heather, who admitted she’s “ridiculously” competitive. “One of my mentors once taught me that the word “No” is negotiable, and I use that every single day and turn it into a yes. The only problem I have had though is my kids caught on to that and now they try and use it on me!”
Her two children, 15-year-old son Harry and 13-year old daughter Makayla have Heather’s competitive edge. Harry, a St Augustine’s student, plays AFL and is representing Cairns at peninsula-level competition. Makayla, who attends St Monica’s, competes in gymnastics at local, state and national levels, and is attending an International Gymnastics camp in the United States in July. “I’m really proud of them, and I’m also proud of where I live”, she said. “I’m passionate about sustainability in our tropical region, and Grant and I are also really passionate about keeping our suppliers local because it creates local jobs which help the Cairns economy.”

Breaking the glass ceiling in construction

WOR DS BY KIMBERLEY VLASI C | PHO TO BY M I N O R I U E D A
ROSYLN Smith has designed and built many houses over the years, but she has spent a lifetime laying the foundations for more women to enter the construction industry. The Affinity Designer Homes manager is more comfortable in steel-capped boots than high heels after decades working on building sites, in hardware stores and behind the drafting table. Establishing a career in a male-dominated industry hasn’t always been easy – Roslyn was one of only two women in a class of 40 at college and always felt she had to prove herself. But her hard work paid off last year when she received the prestigious Far North Queensland Master Builders Women in Building Award. “There aren’t many women in the building industry, especially up here, that have a longevity like that,” says Roslyn. “I only know of a few and I have a great deal of respect for them.
I ENCOURAGE OTHER WOMEN TO GET INTO THE INDUSTRY, IT CAN BE DIFFICULT BUT ALSO VERY REWARDING.”
Rosyln inherited her artistic flair from her late mother, who also worked in male-dominated industries. “When she left school she became a draftsman’s tracer then she did cartography and was a sign writer for years while bringing up four children,” says Roslyn. “She was always an inspiration.” Roslyn enjoys interacting with clients and can spend months working with them to develop a design that suits both their needs and the tropical climate, while taking into consideration energy efficient house requirements and best practice construction methods
“Someone might wander in with a very unusual sloping block of land or a waterfront block and they’ll come in either with no ideas at all or a set of plans we can tender,” she says. “Three quarters of the projects we build are ‘in house’ design and construct, specialising in custom homes, and I deal with the clients from start to finish even handing over the keys at the end of construction.” Roslyn believes the future is bright for the building industry in Cairns as the economy continues to stabilise and buyer confidence returns. “Our inquiry rate is increasing and we have some good commercial projects happening in Cairns, which are leading the way,” she says. “People are now looking to build and get that custom quality home, especially something designed with them in mind, as well as the climate, the block of land and our Far North Queensland lifestyle.”

Final Frontier, or No-Go Zone?
M C G R E G O R
women in building & property
Increasing women’s participation in maledominated industries starts with improving conditions for men. This is the unexpected conclusion of research into why Australia’s building sites remain virtual no-go zones for women despite increasing gender balance across the workforce. While women now make up 46% of the workforce, Australia’s third largest industry has seen a backslide in female participation. Despite technological advances, attractive pay, and quality mentoring and training programs, women now represent only 12% of the construction industry workforce, down from 17% a decade ago. Even remote mining jobs attract more women. Women are leaving the industry 39% faster than men, refusing to put up with the outdated, inflexible, and unproductive working conditions. Pressure to put in 60-70 hour working weeks and the ritual shaming of anyone who doesn’t live to work are signs that construction is stuck in the past. Not rocking up for work on a Sunday because you’re taking the kids to soccer makes you a “part-timer” in this industry. The “blokey” culture doesn’t help either, with workplace rites of passage intended to “toughen people up.” Bullying, overt and covert sexism, and a tolerance for behaviour that verges on sexual harassment all add up to a challenging career path for even the most ambitious woman.

IT’S JUST NOT CONDUCIVE TO A HEALTHY WORK-LIFE BALANCE.
And it’s not healthy for men either. The biggest toll is on mental health: suicide rates in construction are twice the national average, and substance abuse is rife. Construction workers are six times more likely to die by suicide than in workplace accidents, and young apprentices are most at risk. The organisation Mates in Construction was founded to address the problem, and suicide rates are starting to come down. A few low-cost initiatives are having a high impact: 1. Promote free, confidential 24/7 crisis hotlines 2. Train workers to identify and respond to early warning signs in colleagues 3. Work toward a culture of self-care and mental wellness The strategy is simple, but change is slow. Women need to stand their ground and demand cultural change before taking the industry by storm. Kari McGregor is a counsellor and psychoeducation facilitator for the Dr Edward Koch Foundation. With a professional and educational background in psychology and education, she draws on strengths from both fields when assisting clients in building capacity and resilience. The Dr Edward Koch Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of people in Far North Queensland. The Foundation’s work focuses primarily on reducing the rate of suicide in the region through providing suicide prevention and intervention workshops and counselling support.

Home Trends
WORDS BY JANIE BARTON
Current trends in home décor are seeing a return to the natural look where transforming homes into relaxing retreats counteracts today’s fast-paced lifestyle. “As more people spend an increasing amount of time at work on their computer and smart phones, there is a need to create rooms and spaces that avoid these digital distractions,” Samsara Furniture & Homewares owner/designer Robert Steele said. “Homes with places to retreat to as well as the use of décor to create havens of calm and tranquility are the latest home trends.” Robert and his design team share the latest must-haves in interior décor to help turn your home into your personal sanctuary where you can relax and escape a hectic lifestyle. Colours While warm greys and whites dominate the general colour schemes this year, green is in the spotlight in a big way. To help balance today’s hectic pace, green colours enhance that sense of revival and create a relaxing environment. Green is the new must-have dark interior colour, so say goodbye to navy and midnight blues. Used in feature lamps, rugs, cushions and decorative items, green brings the colours of the outdoors inside to help soothe the soul and revitalise the senses. Recycling Reusing, repurposing and recycling are key elements in today’s home décor. Ecofriendly and organic furnishings enhanced by modern colours and designs bring an old-fashioned yet fresh style to the home. Aged wooden tables, vintage pieces, secondhand furnishings, antiques and older pieces are just some of the ideas used to create dynamic new trends out of old items. Terracotta This year sees the return of terracotta to add warmth and character. Terracotta tiles with matte finishes on floors, outdoor areas and bathroom walls are increasing in popularity. Combine with earthy pieces like timber, clay and wicker to bring back that warm home feeling. Artisan Artisan elements are also huge this year and add a distinct touch to any room. Handblown glass ornaments, Aboriginal artifacts and artwork, Balinese masks and crafts and handmade ceramic products are just some of the skillful artistic décor that are becoming increasingly popular to add style and class. Metals Bronze is the new medal for 2017. The good thing about bronze is it plays well with other colours, is on the neutral side and warms up any space. Depending on the look you want to achieve, bronze can add class to a bedroom or industrial chic to an urban apartment. Texture Pleats, folds and luxe fabrics are hot! Think nature, desert, jungle and chic tropical like butterflies and insects for decorative cushions, fabrics and wallpapers. These simple and subtle designs are replacing the rigid geometric designs of last year. Upholstered bedheads Upholstered bedheads are extremely popular this year. While they have been a staple in luxury hotels and celebrity homes for a while, we are now we’re falling head over heels in love with them! Whether a neutral colour with buttons, dark fabric or crushed velvet, an upholstered bedhead is an easy way to add instant glamour and luxury to your bedroom. Make the move back to natural in your home décor and enjoy a relaxed and improved living environment where you can unwind and recharge your batteries. To find out more about the latest trends and add stylish décor to your home, drop in to Samsara Furniture & Homewares for expert advice and creative ideas.

MYTH-BUSTING PET TRAVEL
If you have never travelled your pet, the first time can be a bit worrying, you might have loads of questions. We often answer these when people call to start the process of getting organised.
SARAH & DARREN ALCORN
Here are some answers to the most frequent questions people ask us about their pets travelling by air Will my pet travel along side of me? No they won’t. In Australia, all animals (except for qualified service dogs) travel in a temperature and pressure controlled cargo cabin of the plane. This area of the plane is dimly lit during the flight, many animals take the chance to have a snooze while flying. What will my pet travel in? Your pet will need to travel in an airline approved crate with absorbent bedding. For the right fit, it should be large enough for your pet to lie down comfortably, turn around and stand freely with good ventilation on each side. Dogtainers Cairns can help you find the right size for your pet to travel comfortably, our crates are IATA approved, safe, comfortable and durable. We have crates for all shapes and sizes that are available for either hire or purchase. Should I feed my pet before they fly? A bit like humans, animals can get travel sick especially with a full tummy. To avoid travel sickness, it is recommended that you don’t feed your pet for at least eight hours before their travel time. It is important that you allow them plenty of water prior to their departure. Your pet will also have access to water on the flight. Do I have to sedate my pet to travel? Preferably not. The latest studies show that sedation causes far more trouble than it is worth when travelling by air. If you feel that your pet needs sedation, you will need to talk to your vet about the best options. Can my pet take carry-on luggage? No, unfortunately not. Your pet can take their favourite blanket or a small soft toy in the travel crate with them – it helps to create a sense of security for your pet during travel.
First Class
How long before take-off do I need to have my pet at the airport? Most airports servicing domestic flights require pets to be at the airport 90 – 120 minutes before departure. This earlier check in time allows your pet to be manifested on the flight ready to travel. Dogtainers will confirm with each booking the time your pet needs to be at the airport as well as the drop off location to ensure your pet is presented within the requirements of the airline they are travelling on. What happens after the flight? Pets are the first cargo off the plane. Depending on the service you have chosen, you can collect your pet yourself or the pet will be delivered to you at a specified time and date. All airports vary in their collection points, so check with Dogtainers when you make your booking. Can I travel with my pet internationally? Yes, but there are additional requirements depending on the country you are intending to go to. Dogtainers Cairns know what all the rules and regulations are for each country and animal and can do everything to step their customers through the process. Here are our top tips for travelling by air with your pet Your pet must be medically fit to travel. If you are uncertain of your pet’s health, then a veterinary examination is recommended. Ask your vet to recommend a vet in the destination you are heading to. Animals travel best if they have been toileted and exercised prior to departure. It is recommended that your pet is fully vaccinated to prior to air travel. Need help to get started on a plan? At Dogtainers Cairns, pet transport is what we do all day every day, our expertise is second to none. We can coordinate a specialised plan to suit any animal travelling to any destination around Australia or the world. Our aim is to arrange a fuss-free travel plan so that you and your pet can enjoy the holiday you’ve dreamed of.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR BLOCK OF LAND WHEN BUILDING YOUR NEW HOME. ROSLY N S M I T H
There is a variety of land available to build your new home in and around Cairns. So let’s make sure we build the right house for your land. Land sizes seem to be getting smaller but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a great looking, practical home that suits the land and of course, your family. I recommend to consult a builder when you start the process of looking for land to find out if they can build the right home on the land. The builder should be able to give you a conceptual budget for your new home so that you know whether the proposal is feasible and suits the land. If you decide on a smaller block of land then look at its best aspects; the direction of prevailing breezes, any views or obstructions, and most importantly don’t waste the land with a design that leaves you no yard space or room for that pool, boat, caravan etc. The floor plan shouldn’t waste space on the land but should compliment it.
‘Wom en i n Bu i l d in g ’ Winner Q M BA 2016
Awa r d
Your home should suit our tropical climate while making the energy costs of running your new home affordable. Nothing worse than a beautiful looking home that has to have air conditioning running to make it cool or has to have all the lights on just to see what room you are in. When energy costs keep rising that’s not an intelligent home design.
Make sure the builder is experienced at building the type of home you want. If it’s a sloping block and needs extra site drainage or retaining walls, or it’s a 2 story home then the builder should be able to show you examples of other homes they have built in similar situations. If you want a custom designed home then choose a custom home builder, or alternatively you may find a home plan already designed that suits you so choose a project home builder. Once you’ve consulted the right builder your new home project will fall into place and should give you many years of comfortable living. If you are thinking about building your new home give me a call and we can look at the best options that will suit your land or if you can’t decide on the best block to build on then I can help in that process and together we can get the right home for you. WHERE TO BUY... TIMBER LENGTHS Bunnings have a variety of dressed timber, choose your species, width and thickness and get them to cut to your desired lengths.
CORD Bunnings, Spotlight, Cairns Hardware, online... Choose rustic, leather or paracord which comes in a large many different colours.
SWAGE These are optional and more for aesthetics, you could use anything even beads. Make sure your swage/bead is large enough to accommodate a double thickness of your cord.
CairnsLife 24 Magazine
TIMBER CARE Tung oil is an environmentally friendly penetrating oil, derived from the nut of the tung tree, that will ‘feed’ and protect the timber. Oil finishes are simple to use and easy to maintain. Damaged or scratched areas can easily be repaired by spot reapplication of oil.
1
2
Mark out your drill holes, you need 2 in each of the 4 corners. Space them evenly and take into account the width of your drill bit, which should be sized according to the thickness of your cord.
3
Once marked it’s time to drill. TIP >> place a piece of scrap timber underneath, it protects the surface below and prevents splintering as you drill through the timber.
4
5
It’s a good idea to finish the timber before threading the cord so the cord is kept clean. We love tung oil & wax, it’s a great eco-friendly finish.
Next step is to clean up your timber, take your sandpaper & smooth over the drill holes and surface until you’re happy with the finish.
6
Time to thread the cord, take your swage or bead & thread through to create a hanging loop in the middle of the cord. TIP >> wrap tape over the end of the cord for easy threading!
