CityLife COVER STORY

By Danae Jones

After more than 20 years as the cornerstone of retail in FNQ , MYER has undertaken a significant redevelopment of its Cairns store. The long-standing brand is now poised to usher in a festive season like no other for the local community, with all the trimmings set to dazzle this festive season.

The MYER redevelopment has been part of the significant Cairns Central $60 million redevelopment undertaken by Lendlease. Throughout the staged project, MYER Cairns has been given a complete facelift and in case you haven’t been in store as yet, it is now home to one of the most spectacular stores in the country. The new MYER store spans across a larger, single floor of approximately 7,500 sqm with an improved retail experience and an increased number of new and exclusive brands for local customers. “It’s been lots of work with the fantastic team at Lendlease, and our project management team around design concepts and upgrading new fixtures. And always looking back to what works for our community up here, because Cairns is a unique place in Australia,” said Wayne Cosgrove. If you haven’t been in store as yet, this is just some of what you have to look forward to. “So it’s the latest and greatest of everything that MYER puts forward, so new fixtures, some new beautiful cosmetics counters and houses, and we’ve got some fantastic new and exciting brands coming to the store, which is great news for our customers. Customers will see that it is a new, larger one level store - and we think customers will love the layout and amenity - and we cant wait to welcome them through the doors.”

And there’s lots of new additions in the cosmetics department. “Cosmetics is a really exciting space for us, and there’s been more than thirty additional brands join us in our general cosmetics business, but what we’re most excited about is the addition of the Benefit brow bar, so waxing and brow services as well as all their cosmetics and brow tools will be available for our customers as well.”

“I think in a small town like this it’s important for a place like MYER to be the heart of a community. So we’ve sponsored and become involved in various important community initiatives that are important to our customers and to our team members,” Mr Cosgrove said.

Some team members staff have been with the Company from the very beginning and while it’s a time for rebirthing the iconic brand in Far North Queensland, they can’t help but reminisce of their time with the Company and all that it has brought to their life aside from the obvious benefits of employment. “It’s a great place to work, it’s a good environment, I like the department I work in ladies shoes, I have my favourite customers and there’s just nowhere else I’d rather be than just here,” said Dallas, MYER Employee of (11 years). For the team members who’ve stood the test of time, the store has become far more than a workplace. “Very much so. I just lost my father and I have never had so many hugs in all my life, from all my work colleagues, and it really helped me get through the day,” said Dallas.

“It’s just a good social outing actually for me, I really enjoy my work. I stayed home on the farm for so many years when the children went to school and my daughter was overseas, so I thought I’ll have to get a job, and so that’s when I ended up at MYER, and I’m still here with the MYER family, it’s great,” said Lola Howe, MYER Employee (15 years). Wayne Cosgrove has been a key driving force at MYER since his arrival to Cairns and the customer centric manager says it’s all about listening to people and finding a way to give the community what they expect and to really be a part of their lives. Mr Cosgrove’s team say he’s equally team centric and someone who has instilled a great sense of positive morale amongst the team members and under his leadership they have thrived. “I think that culture is a really important thing in a store and this is the most isolated and remote store in terms of geographically to other stores, so they’re a very self-sufficient team, but sometimes you’ve just got to pump people’s tyres up and invest in them and make them feel valued. And they’re a great team that know what good looks like,” he said. “MYER’s been a fixture here in Cairns for 23 years now, and this redevelopment highlights the Company’s commitment to our loyal Cairns customers” he said. A lot of excitement is building for the creation of the 2020 MYER Giftoruim. At the time of writing, the fit out was still being finalised, but it is tipped to be the most magical place to shop this festive season for everything from ornate Christmas trimming, to personalised chocolates for family and friends that can be made while you wait. “We’re really excited about Christmas in our new store. Between Christmas trim, food and our Giftorium, MYER really is the home of everything Christmas,” Mr Cosgrove said.

FOR LONG STANDING LOYAL CUSTOMERS, THEY COULDN’T BE MORE IMPRESSED WITH THE NEW LOOK MYER.

“It really is something special, we are so lucky to have MYER and Lendlease stand by us through good times and bad in Cairns and deliver such a significant redevelopment for our region using all local businesses. The injection into the economy I am sure has been welcomed. I love shopping at MYER as they not only have the best range, but the team members are incredibly helpful. And let’s face it, no store does Christmas better than MYER, it’s THE place to shop with Christmas cheer from top to toe,” said Kim Fairweather. “Cairns punches above its weight in the MYER family and are really proud of this redevelopment, which is great for Cairns and for our customers - we think our customers will love it as much as we do!” said MYER Employee, Dallas.

MYER The MYER Cairns redevelopment has marked a significant milestone for the iconic brand in Far North Queensland and so too for many local businesses and trades that have been involved in the exciting project. In this feature we showcase some of the local companies behind this magnificent refurbishment of the MYER store.

From electrical with Babinda Electrics, shopfitting with KEMPCO Shopfitting, painting by Vellacorp Painting and commercial construction with the highly experienced team at Lanskey Constructions, a local business has had a hand at every turn on the landmark redevelopment which is a signature feature in the overall $60 million Cairns Central redevelopment.

23 years ago MYER opened its doors in Cairns and it was a pivotal time in the growth of the city to attract such a prominent retail chain. MYER Cairns management say this is their investment in the next 23 years of serving the FNQ region. So when you’re in store don’t forget to admire the superior workmanship of our local businesses who’ve made it all possible just in time for Christmas, and remember that every time you enter the store and make a purchase you are supporting the many local families who continue to work there.

HEY CAIRNS

NEW BRANDS AND YOUR NEW-LOOK MYER COMING THIS NOVEMBER

Cairns Central

REDEVELOPMENT POWERING AHEAD

Progress is powering ahead on the $60 million redevelopment of the region’s leading shopping destination, Cairns Central. Lendlease, which manages Cairns Central and is overseeing the redevelopment, has made significant headway over the past year, with two stages of the MYER fit-out already complete and works underway on the Spence Street Express Parking Ramp. Cairns Central for the first time can announce key retail tenancies which will join Woolworths in the new Food Hall, which is on track to open in time for Christmas, with Woolworths to launch in early 2021. Rise & Bake – the much-loved local bakery is opening a new store at the Centre and will be giving customers their favourite freshly baked breads and rolls, modern French crepes, classic French patisserie and locally roasted coffee. Hong Kong Street – a new authentic experience offering Hong Kong BBQ and the best yum cha dishes including dumplings and BBQ pork buns.

The $60 million project, the first since the Centre opened 20 years ago, includes: • the complete refurbishment of MYER, across a larger, single floor of approximately 7,500sqm with an improved retail experience and an increased number of new and exclusive brands • a new food hall, anchored by Woolworths, offering exciting new dining options and food retailers • new vehicle express ramp that will give customers easy and direct access to the food hall • greater parking convenience with the implementation of ticketless parking • new amenities including a children’s play area • ambience and amenities upgrades including bathrooms, customer service desk, furnishings and finishes.

Hero Sushi – specialising in freshly made Sushi and other Japanese meals trained by well-known Japanese Chef, delivering an authentic dining experience. Excel Fresh – a fresh food grocer, butchery and deli providing an extensive choice of quality fruit and vegetables, fresh meat and a wide selection of cheese, olives and cured meats. Hanaromart – a large and diverse range of Asian groceries inspired by authentic recipes with years of expertise in Asian food. C i t y L i f e 19 M a g a z i n e

BWS – offering the widest wide range of alcoholic beverages. Priceline - The Centre’s existing Priceline will relocate to the Food Hall to offer customers convenience access to an extensive health and beauty offer. When visiting the site Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick said “I commend Cairns Central and Lendlease for investing in Far North Queensland. It’s great to see this $60 million redevelopment project keeping people in jobs and helping to create future jobs in retail. “Our government is doing everything it can to support businesses through this pandemic, so this additional private investment to support jobs and the local community is very welcome.” Lachlan Dyson, Lendlease Regional General Manager, Asset Management is excited about the development coming to fruition. “We’re well on the way to delivering our vision for the redevelopment to give customers exceptional shopping experiences that reflect Cairns’ vibrant and diverse community. “We’re thrilled to have such a diverse range of new retailers joining the centre to provide our customers with more food choices. “Customers can also look forward to a new parking system which will be implemented very soon.” In July 2019, Lendlease announced the commencement of the significant redevelopment of Cairns Central.

ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN FOR AUSTRALIA Economic environment COVID-19 has resulted in the most severe global economic crisis since the Great Depression. In response, the Morrison Government has committed unprecedented support. JobKeeper is a $101 billion lifeline that is supporting around 3.5 million Australian jobs. JobSeeker doubled the safety net. Together, the Government’s actions saved 700,000 jobs. The Australian economy is now fighting back. The Budget sets out the Morrison Government’s economic recovery plan.

JobMaker Hiring Credit A new JobMaker Hiring Credit will encourage businesses to hire younger Australians. The JobMaker Hiring Credit will be payable for up to twelve months and immediately available to employers who hire those on JobSeeker aged 16-35. It will be paid at the rate of $200 per week for those aged under 30, and $100 per week for those aged between 30 and 35. New hires must work for at least 20 hours a week. Treasury estimates that this will support around 450,000 jobs for young people.

Investing in skills and training 100,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships will be supported with a 50% wage subsidy for businesses who employ them. This is in addition to the 180,000 existing apprenticeships and trainees that are being protected. The new JobTrainer fund will create up to 340,000 free or low-cost training places for school leavers and job seekers. 50,000 new higher education short courses will be available, including in agriculture, health, IT, science and teaching.

Tax relief for workers More than 11 million taxpayers will get a tax cut backdated to 1 July this year. Lower and middle-income earners will, this year, receive tax relief of up to $2,745 compared with 2017-18. The changes mean more than 7 million Australians will receive tax relief of $2,000 or more this year. This rewards hard work. It means Australians will have more of their own money to spend on what matters to them, which will help local businesses and create 50,000 new jobs.

Kick starting investment The Morrison Government is building on the successful Instant Asset Write Off. Over 99% of businesses will be able to write off the full value of any eligible asset, until June 2022. This will expand Australia’s productive capacity and create tens of thousands of jobs. For example, it means a trucking company can upgrade their fleet, a farmer can buy a new harvester and a manufacturer can expand their production line.

Manufacturing and Research and Development Manufacturing employs around 860,000 Australians. The Modern Manufacturing plan will target six national manufacturing priorities: • food and beverage manufacturing; • resources technology and critical minerals processing; • medical products; • recycling and clean energy; • defence industry; and • space industry. The Morrison Government is also providing $1 billion for new research funding for our universities.

ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN FOR AUSTRALIA Building infrastructure Rebuilding our economy includes building more roads, rail and bridges. The Budget is expanding our record 10 year infrastructure pipeline, which is already supporting 100,000 jobs on worksites across Australia today. A further $14 billion in new and accelerated infrastructure projects will support a further 40,000 jobs. A further $2 billion is being invested in road safety upgrades, together with an additional $1 billion to support local councils to upgrade local roads, footpaths and street lighting.

Recovery in our regions The Budget will support regional Australia’s economic recovery by providing: • $2 billion in concessional loans to help farmers overcome the drought; • Funding to support regional tourism; • A further round of the Building Better Regions Fund; • $317 million for Australian exporters to continue to access global supply chains; and • $2 billion in new funding to build vital water infrastructure as part of our national water grid including dams, weirs and pipelines.

Increasing home ownership An additional 10,000 first home buyers will be able to purchase a new home sooner under our First Home Loan Deposit Scheme. This builds on the 20,000 first home buyers we are helping to purchase a home this year with a deposit as low as 5% under this Scheme. An additional $1 billion of low cost finance will support construction of affordable housing, taking total concessional finance available to community housing providers to $3 billion.

Guaranteeing health care The Budget delivers record funding for health of $93.8 billion in 2020-21, an increase of almost 43% since 2014-15. Extending Medicare subsidised telehealth services has enabled over 30 million consultations since the crisis began. This Budget includes funding for new lifesaving medicines on the PBS – to treat leukaemia, melanoma and Parkinson’s disease and help women with ovarian cancer. This year, $5.7 billion is being provided to support mental health, including funding for critical frontline services and suicide prevention.

Supporting senior Australians To support Age Pensioners, the Government provided $750 payments in April and July. Age Pensioners will now receive an additional $250 payment in December and another $250 payment in March. To support senior Australians who want to keep living at home, 23,000 more home care packages will be provided. This brings the total to more than 180,000 places, three times the number of home care packages than when this Government was elected in 2013.

Protecting our environment This Budget includes $1.8 billion in funding for the environment. This will help our wildlife recover from bushfires and protect and enhance our natural environment. This includes $233 million in funding to upgrade facilities in Uluru, Kakadu, Christmas Island and Booderee National Park. This Budget is investing $250 million to modernise our recycling infrastructure, stop more than 600,000 tonnes of waste ending up in landfill and create a further 10,000 jobs.

The Importance of Breast ScreeningIt may just save your life BREAST SCREEN QUEENSLAND

Each October Breast Cancer Awareness Month offers the perfect reminder for local women aged over 50 to book a free breast screen appointment at BreastScreen Queensland Cairns Service, or on their Mobile Service that visits nearly 50 rural and remote FNQ locations. Given one in seven Queensland women will develop breast cancer at some stage in their life, there is no greater reminder of the importance of regular breast screening every two years. Dr Amanda Blinco, Clinical Director at the Cairns Service, said that a breast screen, or screening mammogram, takes a picture of what is happening inside the breast and is used to

pick up small changes, often before they can be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. “Early detection can save your life, providing the best chance of effective treatment, increased survival, and improved quality of life. In Cairns, we screen more than 15,000 women for breast cancer each year, but only 55% of eligible women in Queensland participate.” This is despite BreastScreen Queensland offering a free service that does not require a referral from a General Practitioner. Sandra Peut and Belinda Lees, Health Promotion Officers at the Cairns Service, recognise that busy lives can make it difficult to find the time for regular health checks. “Events like Breast Cancer Awareness Month remind women of the importance of taking care of their health, especially as most of us know someone who has been touched by breast cancer.” Women aged between 50 and 74 are strongly recommended to have a screening mammogram every two years, as this is the age group that benefits most from screening. Women in their 40s or women aged over 75 are also eligible for the free service. BreastScreen Queensland Cairns Service offers appointments from 7.30am. There is wheelchair access and interpreter assistance available upon request. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50 or online at www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au

A whole lot of heart NORTHERN HEART SPECIALISTS

Did you know your heart beats about 100,000 times a day and pumps about 2000 gallons of blood everyday? Understanding this complex muscular organ takes years of study and continuous training, which is how the cardiologists at Northern Heart Specialists came to be among the best local leaders in cardiac care.

Providing world-class care throughout the region for both public and private patients is the passion behind interventional cardiologists Drs Greg Starmer, Anthony Brazzale and Shane Preston, who started Northern Heart Specialists early 2019. “We find it very gratifying to make someone’s life a little easier, hopefully a little longer and certainly better,” said Dr Starmer, who was raised in Mareeba before embarking on years of study nationally and internationally and returning to Far North Queensland in 2011to commence practice at both the Cairns Hospital and Cairns Private Hospital. “It’s very rewarding and humbling to be able to work on someone’s heart.” Dr Brazzale is also a Far North Queenslander, having grown up in Mutchilba on the Atherton Tablelands. He studied medicine at James Cook University in Townsville where he graduated with First Class Honours and received the University Medal for his academic achievements. Additionally, he was awarded the Whole Time Medical Specialist Prize for achieving the highest grade in his medical cohort. After completing his internship at the Cairns Base Hospital, he moved to Brisbane to pursue cardiology training before returning to Cairns Consultant Staff Specialist in Interventional Cardiology at the Cairns Hospital. He is also

the clinical lead for junior doctor education in the Cairns Hospital for cardiology. Dr Preston, who came to Cairns in 2013 and took the position as Senior Staff Specialist at the Cairns Hospital, has a strong focus on the management of patients with acute and chronic issues relating to coronary artery disease (blocked heart arteries). He has extensive experience and expertise in performing coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (stent implantation). He also has additional focus on the prevention of heart disease and care for patients with other general cardiological issues. “We’re all very much committed to providing a public cardiac service as well as private, and that’s a priority for us,” Dr Starmer said. “We’re all about equality, and one of the things we really want to do is make sure we provide a very comprehensive and high-quality cardiology service to both public and private patients.” Northern Heart Specialists cardiologists are constantly undergoing training to keep abreast of all the latest knowledge and technology needed to give their patients the best care possible. “It is a life-long education,” Dr Starmer said. “We all are researchers; we all are educators, and we all like to be involved in national and international meetings and conferences to keep our skills up. “There’s nothing better than being able to make someone’s life better. It’s really rewarding to be able to help people when they’re in these life-changing moments.”

STAYING HEALTHY OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON VINNY SILULU CONCISE X-TRAINING YOUR FITNESS CAIRNS

It is not long to go until the Christmas season is upon us and some of you may be wondering how you are going to stay fit over the festive season. We all know the holidays are for bringing family and friends together, eating until our bellies are full and consuming large amounts of alcohol to celebrate another year gone. Before you read this, I want you to take 5 deep breaths… We need to remember Christmas Day is just ONE day of the year. Your training and health will not be negatively affected because of one day of binge eating, however what tends to happen is that can easily turn that into one week or one month, creating unhealthy habits that promote an increase in body fat and weight. Typically, this happens because people binge eat on particular days, then become completely discouraged and ultimately ‘give up’ altogether. It’s perfectly fine to have multiple moments through the holidays to eat, drink and let your hair down, however it is important that we maintain healthy habits, between those moments, in order to continue to preserve our health and fitness results. Here are four simple tips you can take on board during the festive season. #1 Stay active throughout your day. It does not matter what you are doing, as long as you try to increase your NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) to help burn calories throughout your day. Sitting on a couch and watching tv for hours on end will not help with maintaining any type of fitness. This can include parking further away from the shop entrance when you go Christmas shopping, walking the dog, playing with your kids out in the backyard or riding your bike to your destination instead of using the car. Beginners should aim for 10,000 – 15,000 steps per day and a typically active person should aim for 20,000 – 25,000 steps per day.

#2 Make healthier choices. Any small changes that you can make to your lifestyle is going to be beneficial to your health in the long run. Healthy choices need to become a part of your daily routine for it to become a habit. Adjustments to your eating, like adding more fresh fruit and vegetables to your meals, substituting foods for low fat/sugar options, drinking more water, eating plenty of protein and finding a food plan that works for you, will make all the difference. Experiment with healthy foods and recipes to find something that works for YOU! #3 Start NOW. Building a healthy and sustainable choices in advance, will help you prepare for the festive season. You need to be able to come back to an eating plan that you are confident works well for you. If you are not prepared for the day after, then chances are you are not going to recover and maintain your results. If you do get into a routine now, you are more likely to get yourself back on track! Be prepared and be disciplined for when the day comes because temptations are going to be coming from everywhere. #4 Have FUN. With 2020 already being a difficult year (to say the least), we have so much to be grateful for. Try to find happiness in the positives and let go of things you cannot control. Let yourself celebrate and try not to be too hard on yourself if you slip up on your eating or fitness regime. Acknowledge when you have had enough and get yourself back on track. Think about how to recover from the naughty meals and make the next meal count! Add fresh and healthy options to your eating plan that know you will enjoy. Food does not have to be boring and neither does your exercise, so have fun with it these holidays and be creative! Have a very Merry Christmas team and a Happy New Year.

“The Palms Collection” THE NEW $300+ MILLION

MASTERPLAN REVEALED

The new HEART of the BEACHES is about to be born!

A captivating new Masterplan for The Palms Collection has been unveiled in Cairns. The multifaceted development has a little bit of something for everybody. The Palms Collection will deliver hundreds of jobs during construction and more upon completion, as well as inject $34 million into the local economy each year with over 95,000 new visitors to Cairns expected to travel to immerse themselves in the new tourist attraction. The proposed Masterplan is expected to be the first enviro development™ in the region, merging the latest in sustainable environmental management practices to create one of the most liveable communities in Australia. Proponents, PPNQ Developments Pty Ltd, say they are committed to making the large span of 85 acres of open space available to everybody with an emphasis on community and connection and the creation of a space where locals gather and enjoy the natural surroundings, while taking in the many entertaining facilities that will be on offer.

BENEFITS TO YOU & FNQ • $300m+ Development in the heart of the Northern Beaches of Cairns • Creation of 200+ jobs during construction • Creation of 300+ direct jobs upon completion • $34 million annual economic injection each year once completed • Wide open spaces for everybody to enjoy - over 30% of site to become public open space • A magnificent waterpark & adventure playground • Village centre with shops, restaurants etc • Huge network of walking & bike trails for your family and friends to enjoy • A community event space, Central Park and ampitheatre • 95,000+ new visitors to the region each year • Highway upgrades to improve traffic • Environmentally sensitive - beautiful vegetated waterways to be retained and enhanced

“As a local father of four young children, I know how important family friendly attractions are. The Palms offers everything from meeting places in cafes, restaurants and bars, to kilometres of walking and cycling trails. And children will be in wonderland with the magnificent waterpark and adventure playground we have designed. It is sure to give great joy for many generations to come. “There will be a caravan park and motor home precinct, short stay villas available for visitors to the area and locals wanting to take

advantage of mini staycations, as well as large sized residential lots for those wanting to build their dream home and live permanently on site while taking advantage of all the facilities at their fingertips,” said Managing Director of PPNQ Developments Pty Ltd, Darren Halpin. There’s even a new school planned with an announcement recently made that the Catholic Diocese of Cairns has entered into a contract to purchase land on the site to build a primary school for Prep – Grade 6 with a view to expand if required. “We really have tried to think of everybody with this latest masterplan and take on board over eighteen months’ worth of community feedback. We have got out into the community and we have listened,” said Darren Halpin. The Development Application is currently before Cairns Regional Council and is expected to be voted on in soon. If approved construction is expected to commence in early-mid 2021. “Let’s give the people of Cairns something to look forward to despite the tough economic times. What’s not to like about jobs, economic growth, an environmental showcase of our stunning surroundings and one of the best tourist and waterpark attractions this city has ever seen?,” said Mr Halpin. And to those who still have their heart set on the golf course remaining, Mr Halpin says there are still plenty of great golf courses in FNQ , in fact there are 21 still remaining, but sadly golf at Paradise Palms is finished!

C i t y L i f e 26 M a g a z i n e

“It’s been a tough slog and we’ve tried many different ways to make this site work as a golf course with some of the best in the world advising us on what to do, but the fact of the matter is, it just doesn’t work, it loses money hand over fist and there are just not the numbers of visiting golfers to sustain its operation. The golf course won’t ever be opened again, and unfortunately while that’s hard to accept for some, in time, we are hopeful that they will see what a huge benefit this will be to not only them but the many other residents in FNQ. They might not be able to play golf here anymore, but they will be able to do so much more under the new Masterplan. “We are local and ready to get started. This is no pie in the sky idea, this project is shovel ready. We just need the people of Cairns to let Council know they want it, so we can get the approvals in place to commence work and get this exciting project underway,” said Mr Halpin. A display centre in the Paradise Palms Clubhouse and a series of shopping centre pop up stations will take place over the coming weeks to share all the details of the project with locals. “We encourage everyone to come out and chat to us and see what we have in store. We know that when they see the plans with their own eyes, they will be just as excited as we are,” he said. The Development Application is currently pending approval with Cairns Regional Council and if you’d like to see this magnificent open community space accessible for everybody, then make your voice heard to your local Cairns Councillor today.

THE POWER OF PR™

FESTIVE PR DANAE JONES

The festive season is upon us and while many businesses are planning to close their doors for their annual set timeframe, many others remain open, as it is their strongest trading period of the entire calendar year. If you’re a business that is looking forward to the annual shut down, that doesn’t mean your Public Relations needs to wind down as well. The Christmas and New Year period is actually a great time to secure positive, feel good publicity for your business as newsrooms don’t go to sleep over the festive season, they continue to deliver the news each and every day – and they are looking for feel good stories more so than any other time of year. This is a great opportunity to promote your Christmas charity work, something unique you might be treating your staff with as a Christmas gift, or even inviting media along to your end of year events to capture some social pics of your business. Here are some of my top tips to help you with your Festive PR:

D an ae Jone s is Managi ng Di r ect or of P R & Ma r ke ting fir m Danae Jones C on su l ti ng Pty Ltd

: danae@danaejones.com.au : www.danaejones.com.au

Number #1 – Don’t put your publicity on hold. This is a time of year that you can be fun, creative and innovative with your media opportunities. The media love a story to get their audience laughing, or a good Samaritan piece that tugs at the heart strings. There are less people available to interview at this time of year so journalists struggle to fill their papers and news bulletins and are looking for visually appealing and feel good stories to fill the gaps. Think about how you could pitch a story to your local media outlets to not only attract positive PR for your business, but help the newsroom gain a great story to add to their days line up. Number #2 – Networking Everyone is hosting a party in the lead up to Christmas, so take advantage of the time to network and enjoy meeting new people and socialising with your customers, suppliers and staff. Get amongst it and spread some festive cheer and make some new connections!

Nearly the end of a most unusual year. What will things will look like in the legal world in 2021? Unfortunately I predict the growing trend of self-represented litigants is only going to increase with the downturn in our economy. So for those of you out there who are in the midst of a court case, whether it is family law or something else, and find yourself having to represent yourself, these tips might be of some use to you. The first thing I would ask you, is, do you really (really?) have to do this case without legal advice? I know that sounds self-serving, but – would you remove your own wisdom tooth? Would you build a house with no building experience? You would never think about doing that because it will cause you pain, physically or financially. But the truth is, trying to represent yourself in court proceedings knowing little about what’s going on IS going to be painful. It could also be financially crippling if you make a mistake and you are ordered to pay the costs of the other party. Sure, you can’t pay big dollars in legal fees upfront but maybe your lawyer will accept payment by instalments? There are also companies out there prepared to lend money for litigation. At the very least, can you set aside enough money to pay for an hour or two of a lawyer’s time to make sure that you’ve got the facts straight, your documents prepared correctly, and so on? This reasonably small outlay in the scheme of things could save you a lot of money and heartache later on. In family law matters, you really need to know how to pick your battles - what to fight for and want to compromise upon. Make use of free legal resources, and the legal aid services. Do some research on the Internet and find out as much as you can. Google the web pages for the respective court. The Family Court/

CityLife LAW

Federal Court website has very helpful information and a court hotline. Google your questions because lots of lawyers these days write blogs and you will be able to find information that way. Just be mindful it will be a general nature only and you should not take it as legal advice. Every case is decided according to the facts of that particular case so again it comes back to getting some tailored legal advice, ideally from an expert in that field. When appearing in court, at the moment a lot of appearances are done by telephone. This has its challenges for the judicial officer particularly when people interrupt the judge. It’s a great idea not to interrupt the Judge; not to argue with them, and be as polite and courteous as possible; always referring to the Judge as “Your Honour”. If the court is running as a face-to-face court, I highly recommend that you go to court early, or on another day, and sit there for a while to see what happens. I guarantee, you will get useful information from this procedure, seeing how lawyers address the Judge, what sorts of things are said and how things are done.

How you dress is also very important. I always recommend to my clients to dress as if they are going to a funeral, as a bit of a joke but in all seriousness - No singlets, no tank tops, no bare midriffs, no boobs hanging out. A nice knee length dress with sleeves would be perfect for the girls, for the guys a collared shirt and long trousers. Wear a tie if you are comfortable in it. Jackets are fine and it can get cold. First impressions always count. If you want the court to take you seriously then dress and act the part. All the best! We started our property year in high spirits off the back of a strong last quarter in 2019 that rolled into great activity and then, everything ground to a halt! In March 2020, we, in the real estate industry, had to scramble to educate ourselves to be more digitally relevant. Quite a daunting task for those that are not millennials and accustomed to putting a video camera in front of our aging face and doing virtual walkthroughs, Facebook live open home feeds, videos etc. I have to say buyers were very receptive, patient and supportive throughout this time - with many laughs being had. Video walkthroughs and floor plans of properties still remain relevant today. Obviously as we went into lockdown we were concerned as to what would happen to our Cairns property market .....fortunately, there was no inundation of properties being placed for sale which allowed price levels to remain stable and sales to occur at approximately equivalent to 2019 levels through the first three quarters of 2020. Now as we commence the last quarter of 2020, money still remains cheap to borrow so offers are still being received, provided the price is considered fair and reasonable. There has been a bit of discussion of late that there has been an influx of inter-state buyers into our property market due to the impact of COVID in some States. Whilst we may be fielding interstate enquiry most of these buyers still want to physically inspect a property prior to purchase. Unless a property is “formulae” and it’s value is easily determinable without an inspection, most buyers are reticent to commit. When I speak of “formulae”

properties, I am referring to properties that have a prime position e.g. absolute beachfront or are a new build in a proven location. We had a fantastic auction on Saturday 26 September at 78 Cinderella Street, Machans Beach, where we had a bidding shoot-out between two buyers based in New South Wales. Both buyers had not physically inspected the property but greatly desired the location. We sold the property under the hammer and exceeded the reserve. The auction went for over 25 minutes and has been our highest viewed video on our Facebook page with over 750 views. Pre-COVID, buyer activity in our property market usually reduced from Christmas Eve for a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

I’m not sure this will occur this year - given the travel restrictions and that many of our interstate buyers may not be able to travel until well into the latter part of this quarter, I think our Christmas downtime may only last a week. Whether we experience higher than our usual migration from other states, in particular from Victoria, is yet to be seen. At this point our sellers are still preparing their properties for sale to achieve a sales result in a timely manner prior to Christmas. Most of our inner-city suburbs remain as either “sellers markets” or “balanced markets”. As yet, we have not seen an inundation of stock for sale as a result of loan repayments re-commencing for most in October. Energy levels of local buyers remain high at open homes with many happy to commit to the perfect property once found. I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

It’s the million dollar question, how will the economy perform (locally and nationally) in 2021?. Anyone who has the answer to this can also let me know the winning lotto numbers and next years Melbourne Cup winner. It is impossible to predict what will happen as the COVID-19 crisis continues to impact businesses and the economy. At the start of this crisis, in March and April, the near universal view was that the COVID-19 recession would be far worse than the GGC with a sharper, longer downturn, higher unemployment and sharp falls in asset prices. Whilst some of these predictions have come to fruition (unemployment approaching 7%, largest GDP contraction since the Great Depression) and many industries have been significantly impacted, the impact on the economy overall to date has not been as bad as feared. The massive Government stimulus program has clearly worked with many businesses recording record sales after declines in Mach and April. You only need to go to Harvey Norman, Cairns Central or Bunnings to see the cash flowing through the economy. Asset values have by and large held firm with the sharemarket and residential property market performing much better than expected. Where during the GFC we saw large declines in the values of discretionary assets such as holiday homes and boats incredibly we are seeing some of these assets now attracting a premium. Boats and caravans have a 12 month wait times for those who order today and prices in some holiday areas such as Noosa are booming. How much of this increase in demand is a short term boost driven by Government stimulus and how much

C i t y L i f e 32 M a g a z i n e

is more sustainable remains to be seen. Whilst Government stimulus has no doubt boosted the economy some activity has also driven by Australian returning home and money spent on overseas holidays and entertainment diverted to other areas. Also unknown is how many of the most impacted businesses in tourism, hospitality, retail and events reopen and recover as stimulus measures wind down. All of this uncertainty can make it difficult for households and business to make long term decisions. Some businesses will be asking themselves should I hire more staff, invest in or expand my business. Households may be trying to make decisions around buying or selling their home and considering investment and employment options. Anyone trying to make these decisions based on predicting COVID-19 is taking a big risk as to date no one has accurately predicted what is likely to happen. As boring as it sounds all big decisions for businesses and households should be made with a long term view based on past experience. Any decisions need to be sustainable and not based on short term value movements or rising or falling sentiment. In my view the only definitive conclusion we can draw from COVID-19’s economic impact to date is that it has increased volatility and uncertainty significantly and as a result we should all make sure we have a bigger contingency when making long term decisions. As 2020 draws to a close let’s all hope 2021 provides an opportunity for all of these who have been impacted by COVID-19 to get back on their feet.

FNQ

THE NEW GLOBAL HUB FOR TECH ENTREPRENEURS

Jodie Mlikota, said Cairns was the perfect place to host a tech startup. “The support available to me as a Far North Queensland-based entrepreneur has been invaluable. Launch FNQ will show others with great ideas that living in a regional area needn’t be a barrier to innovation and scalability,” Jodie said.

Far North Queensland is already one of the world’s most enviable places to live and work, and now there’s a new reason to make the move to the tropics. Launch FNQ is a new business incubator and accelerator, offering mentoring, workshops, networking, and programs to support technology and innovation entrepreneurs. “YEP Cairns has been helping local entrepreneurs get their ideas off the ground since 2017, and we’re excited to launch this new incubator to help techbased businesses succeed from Far North Queensland,” said Entrepreneurship Facilitator, Kate Montgomery. Co-founder of the successful dinner party platform, Gathar,

Federal Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch MP said the new incubator, funded by the Australian Government, will allow YEP Cairns to build on the positive results it’s been able to achieve during the past three years. “YEP Cairns will continue to assist entrepreneurs in all types of businesses, and with the Regional Incubator Support Initiative, will now be able to offer a program to help people with technology based start-ups to progress their ideas, gain investment and enter new international markets.” Questagame Co-founder, Andrew Robinson moved to Cairns as part of the Queensland Government’s Hot DesQ program last year and said he is thrilled to be a Launch FNQ mentor. “Cairns has been a great fit for expanding our global biodiversity social enterprise through new technology and investors. Launch FNQ will create

an eco-system that brings together government, industry, research and science, positioning this part of the world as a leading hub for global innovation,” Andrew said. The founder of Townsville-based SafetyCulture, Luke Anear, was the guest speaker at the first Launch FNQ event held in September. His company reached unicorn status ($1 billion valuation) earlier this year and in August SafetyCulture was recognised as Australia’s fourth best place to work. “Technology start-ups are now key employers in Australia and there is real benefit to building capacity in the regions. It is creating connections and relationships that can mean success for a great idea and I hope to see some good ideas becoming global businesses from Cairns,” said Luke. Amelia Bandera from new Cairnsbased tech start-up, Sophus, said she is excited about the opportunity to be involved in the program. “I’m looking forward to drawing on the expertise of other tech companies locally, nationally and internationally via this incubator, as we take our nutrition app to the market,” Amelia said. The Family Law Act 1975 was enacted by our federal government to eliminate fault in divorce law and to simplify procedures, reduce costs and otherwise codify the law applicable to marriage breakdown. Jurisdiction was subsequently extended to de facto (including same sex) relationships so that it provided an all-encompassing body of law aimed to assist parties through the uncertainty and trauma of relationship breakdowns.

significant financial and emotional stresses to families caught up in lengthy court disputes will have long term implications on society. We can all play a role in turning the tide. The government must increase funding to a system which is vital for the proper functioning of an ever increasing body of people, but most importantly families, who are experiencing the repercussions of relationship breakdowns.

Whilst the initial indicators pointed towards a less adversarial and more timely resolution of family law disputes, it is now fair to say that the current system is struggling to meet the expectations and needs of a civilised society. Determination of disputes, particularly about parenting arrangements have become too complex and confusing. Whilst parenting decisions are premised on a consideration of what is in the best interests of children, judges are required to consider complex statutory provisions and lawyers are required to gather evidence for clients in relation to a lengthy list of relevant factors resulting in longer and more cumbersome trials.

The courts must continue to introduce innovative programs and promote alternate dispute resolution to reduce delays and provide timely resolutions for litigants. Lawyers must provide pragmatic and sensible resolution options to clients and litigants. They must give clients and litigants good and concise advice upon which they can make decisions based on realistic expectations, and focused on solutions rather than emotions. Clients and litigants should seek out and consider specialist family law advice so that a proper and sound resolution can be achieved in a timely and cost effective manner. The financial and emotional cost for not doing so can be enormous.

The complexity and length of trials, coupled with the significant underfunding of the court has led to the family law courts drowning under an enormous caseload. The underfunding is reflected in the enormous workloads of individual judges and the resulting time delays in having family law disputes resolved. Some matters are taking 3 to 4 years to be resolved. The backlog of cases yet to be determined is blowing out. The

• Binding financial agreements • Children’s matters • De facto relationships

Divorce isn’t pretty. It is an inevitable consequence for many. The rule of law is essential to the resolution of these highly emotional and confusing times. Use the legal system wisely and you will be much better for it. At the end of the day, it is and will be the answer.

How to pack

CityLife FASHION

FOR YOUR NEXT VACAY! PIP ADDISON

Although we still have travel restrictions in place and our destinations are limited, we are still very fortunate to live in our very own paradise. Whether planning a trip over the Christmas holidays or even a quick weekend getaway in our own backyard up to Port Douglas; the stunning Magnetic Island; or at one of our beautiful new hotels in the heart of the city, you will need a summer suitcase! So what type of packer are you? One that leaves things to the last minute only to shove everything into a bag; or perhaps an over-packer that takes everything other than the bathroom scales. Packing efficiently is definitely a skill that comes with experience. No one likes learning the hard way when they realise they’ve packed 15 dresses and only needed 5!

HERE ARE SOME TIPS THAT I HAVE LEARNT ALONG THE WAY: LET’S GET STARTED

• Think about what you’re planning to do on your trip, i.e. whether it be walks, hikes, swimming, parties, dinners, theme parks, romantic evenings and so on; • Check the weather app although this time of year will be warm it’s still handy to know if you will need an umbrella or some more layers; • Make a list, and apply this to everyone in the family (!); • Plan your wardrobe from there. Lay it out on your bed (each outfit) including shoes, underwear, and accessories as this way you won’t forget anything. You can cull what you don’t need or clothing that can be used twice etc. For example, shoes take up room therefore pack a particular pair that works better with more outfits; • Pack comfortable shoes, i.e. you don’t want to be breaking-in shoes on your holiday and have blisters to contend with; • Pack more tops then bottoms’ as you can wear the same shorts or skirt twice; • Swimwear - I suggest for a tropical holiday at least 3 styles if staying longer than a weekend, as you will live in them and they are light to pack. Sunscreen also a must! Different kimonos and a white oversized shirt is a great coverup after too much sun, and can also be paired back with denim shorts or skirt for another outfit option; • Accessories are your key to changing up an outfit and are only small things to add to your case. Sunglasses, hats, jewellery, and bags are a must. Purchase a jewellery bag so you don’t damage or misplace anything, these are fantastic; • Don’t forget something comfy for hanging around the hotel or apartment. I.e. if having a night in with takeaway and movies you’ll want to feel at home and cosy; • If flying, remember the plane gets quite cool, so pack a light scarf or cardi for your carry on. I always freeze on a plane (!);

TAKING A LITTLE EXTRA TIME TO PREPARE YOUR CASE WITH EVERYTHING YOU REQUIRE WILL IN-TURN MAKE YOUR HOLIDAY HASSLE FREE. AFTER ALL, YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO ARRIVE AT YOUR DESTINATION WITH MINIMAL BAGGAGE AND ALSO LESS TO UNPACK; WHILST LOOKING EFFORTLESSLY STYLISH AND RELAXED; AND WITH ONLY ONE TOP PRIORITY IN MIND - FINDING THE COCKTAIL WAITER! ;-)

CityLife FASHION

• If traveling to warm climates, especially when you are not able to check-in straight away, I suggest using a cooler bag for your makeup. Not as classy I know however you can get some nice options and they make a big difference. I.e. helps stop makeup (lipsticks) from melting and overheating whilst in transit or in the car; • Pack a wash bag, i.e. something to put your dirty laundry in until you are ready to pack to come home; • Maximising your suitcase and leaving room for shopping is also important. I.e. you don’t want to be paying excess luggage fees, or having to carry more than what you started out with on the way home. Also, try rolling your clothes in your suitcase as this gives you more room and helps reduce wrinkles; • Don’t forget your exercise gear! You may not work out as often and perhaps only a walk a on the beach, however if you pack it you are more likely to make the effort to do it and it also stops the guilt when indulging in happy-hour every afternoon (!); • Have all your maintenance done prior to going, i.e. hair coloured, waxing, and nails painted always sets your holiday mood off to a good start feeling fresh; and lastly • Don’t forget your reading glasses; phone and laptop chargers; a good book, and any medication!

ONE WEEK’S HOLIDAY SUGGESTION PACKING LIST FOR WARM CLIMATE WOMEN Exercise outfits including sneakers Swimwear x 3 – including cover ups 2 hat styles 2 pairs of sunglasses 3 pairs of shoes – slide, sandal and heel (change the heel to another sandal if you are not dressing up for any evenings) Sunscreen, toiletries, makeup and washing bag 3 bags - Beach bag, handbag and clutch for evening Jewellery – selection of earrings, rings and necklaces that work back with your outfits Cosy outfit to hang in room with. (Option- dressing gown depending if provided by hotel) 3 to 4 dresses to dress up or down for night and day 2 shorts or skirts 4 tops Belt Underwear P.Js Light scarf or light weight jacket for travel or evening

Christmas Time

CATCH UP’S

What does Christmas mean to you? “It is a time for Christian celebration and quiet reflection on the past year first and foremost. It also is a time when we plan to be with family and close friends to enjoy and celebrate all that is good about our circumstances and friendships”.

Kevin Byrne Executive Manager Enterprise North

2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to most this festive season? “ I am looking forward to an injection of certainly and positiveness, and better conditions for the many thousands of Australians who have faced hardships and difficulties throughout the past year through circumstances that no one predicted.

What does Christmas mean to you? Christmas reminds me of God’s love for humanity through Jesus and our responsibility to care for those entrusted to us. 2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to most this festive season? Helping the community reconnect with each other!

Ben Johnson (Major)

What does Christmas mean to you? It is the part of my life where traditionally is spent with the entire family, celebrating life and playing with the grandchildren. It is a time to reflect on how privileged we are to live in Australia and enjoy the lifestyle in Cairns whilst others are not so fortunate. It reminds my family and I to practicably put in place plans to donate more time and money to those less fortunate.

How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? That still remains undecided because my family are based in Melbourne and the Gold Coast therefore we are not sure of what we can do at this moment in time. It might have to be a deferred celebration in to the New Year. Do you have any favourite Christmas traditions? Good red wine, my wife’s cooking and laughter.

What does Christmas mean to you? (Anyone that knows me knows that Christmas has always been my favourite day of the year. Since I was a child until this day I struggle to sleep the night before Christmas. There is no better feeling in the world than seeing the pure joy in your child’s eyes on Christmas morning. The memories and traditions that I grew up on and now passed down to my kids makes me extremely proud as a parent and my only hope is for them to do the same with their families. As nice as it is to have a house full of presents on Christmas morning (in the scheme of things is not the most important part of Christmas) there is no better feeling in the world than spending this day with the people you love most in your life, laughing and eating all day even though your belly hurts to the point of exploding but there is still always room for mums famous trifle or pavlova all the while struggling to keep the runs on the board with a

back yard cricket game) 2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to most this festive season? (12 months ago I don’t believe there is a person in the world that could or would of predicted the world to come to a complete hold. It has been extremely sad and emotional to see so many families struggling through 2020. In my field of work we have seen the significant impact COVID 19 as had on our clients and their families. What myself and our team at The Industry is looking forward to the most is taking the 10 days over Christmas to really connect with our family and loved ones. I think COVID 19 has opened everyone’s eyes in the world that possessions and things are just that...... material things will never give you unconditional love, empathy or support. We never took a day off throughout this whole year even during

What does Christmas mean to you? It creeps up on us every year, the year goes faster as we near December & then bang its here. For me it’s a pause button, that moment to stop, take a deep breath, relax, reflect & be grateful for all that we have. 2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to most this festive season? We close the restaurant for a few days too. Even though we could book Splash out 10 times over, I insist my staff spend this special time with their loved ones too. That’s very important to me. As an employer for over 20 years I have never budged on this. We all return after some time off to take on the craziness that is New Years. How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? Christmas 2020 for Malcolm, myself & our children

lock down we pushed through working hard for our clients and supporting them through such a hard time so I think these 10 days over Christmas/New Year will be amazing for us all to re connect with our families and spend that quality time needed. How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? This year if all the stars align we are hoping to celebrate with both sides of our family down on the Sunshine Coast and have a really traditional sandy beach/ Christmas BBQ. Do you have any favourite Christmas traditions? Anything that lights up is my Jam. I am that annoying human that puts our Christmas Tree up in November and takes it down end of January sometimes feburary. It gives me and my kids so much enjoyment to sit in the lounge room surounded by twinkling lights.

How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? with lots of food, family , friends

Alex & Georgie will be at our home in Bayview Heights with family & friends. Celebrations will be over a few days. I always take pride in skinning, scoring & glazing a big fat ham! There will be the token potato salad, Dons famous chilled prawn & mango salad and then well its just not Christmas without the Pavlova!!!!!! My sister in law Lisa & I like to come up with a different Christmas Cocktail each year for fun. We are working on the 2020 version right now. Do you have any favourite Christmas traditions? The McKay family Christmas tradition is ‘’our version” of celebrity heads played on the bon bon hats! Reminiscent to Pauls Kellys how to make gravy, later in the evening we push the tables back & gather round for some hilarious antics!

What does Christmas mean to you? Firstly, it’s the celebration of the birth of our Saviour and Lord, Jesus. Secondly, it has become tradition to connect either by Christmas greeting cards or email newsletter with friends and family scattered all around Australia and the world and for some, this is the only time of the year we set aside time to keep in touch. It’s a special time of the year to catch up on what’s been happening in our friends’ lives for the year. 2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to

What does Christmas mean to you? I have said that Christmas means time with the family. It means spending time with people whom I have an attachment to, with the opportunity to share meals with one another. I also love the joy I feel when spending time with close friends and family. I also invite people I call ‘our orphans’, those with no local family to our Christmas lunch as well.

Warren Entsch MP Federal Member for Leichhardt

2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to most this festive season? Last year, I predicted that 2020 will be one of the best years on record as it is a balanced year.

CATCH UP’S

most this festive season? Hopefully, for the lifting of Covid restrictions even further and for the ability to connect in bigger groups at Christmas concerts etc.

sees the ham get sliced up for the first time and ham and eggs enjoyed by everyone. When we were young, our parents always had a hot meal for Christmas Day lunch.

How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? We honestly haven’t thought that far ahead yet! Usually we attend a church service together in the morning and spend the day with close family.

Years ago, we decided it is way too hot to be having a hot meal and so we now have cold local fresh seafood and delicious salads.

Do you have any favourite Christmas traditions? It’s the only time of the year we order a leg of ham and Christmas morning breakfast

Well I couldn’t have been any more wrong! Drought, floods, bushfires and a pandemic— I’ve seen so many people in our community struggle throughout 2020. I’m just looking forward to the end, in the hopes that 2021 will bring back some sense normality. How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? As I do every year, I am planning on going out to my farm and do some cooking for all my friends and family. I want to maximise the time with them this year before heading to my next-door neighbour’s farm to help them get some relief from the chores of milking on Christmas Day.

What does Christmas mean to you? Celebrating the Birth of Jesus and from that sharing special family time. Having a big traditional lunch with extended family and close friends. Always 20 – 30.

Dom Davies

Owner The Woolshed Cairns

2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to most this festive season? Getting lots of presents, then being able to fly down South and spend a few weeks and my folks beach house for a family fiesta of surf, beach, mountainbiking, cooking, loving and a few beers and a little wine. Connecting with my nieces and nephews, a bit of golf out the back door.

C i t y L i f e 56 M a g a z i n e

We always have a Christmas tree which is lovingly decorated and gifts for each other are ‘mysteriously’ placed either under or hidden in the branches. Traditionally we have phone calls or FaceTime with members of the family who are not with us on the day.

That way, they get a chance to spend some time with their family too. My wife has also suggested that we book into a restaurant with family and friends, but that has not been settled on yet. Do you have any favourite Christmas traditions? Ever since I’ve had children, I’ve gotten up a little earlier and waited for my kids to make me a cup of coffee and we sit next to the Christmas Tree. After the coffee is made, I individually hand out presents to all my children, one at a time, to spread the presents experience. Finally, like many people’s favourite traditions, my family and I always enjoy some ham and eggs for breakfast on Christmas Day.

How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? At home with the DaLims and Daslers. Mass on Chrissy eve, Cooking, Lunch, always on one big long table, set specially by Deb, secret Sanda, Mango Daquiris, swimming, hopefully a little dancing. Kids will probs roll out the Kombi and do a few a few rooftop DJ sets. Lotsa love. Hope to keep Brad sober and in his clothes. Do you have any favourite Christmas traditions? All of above. Oh yeah I forgot, I secretly put on the Air Cond but leave the back of the home open to the outdoor/pool area, so we keep the vibe. Don’t tell Deb (beautiful wife), she might get cranky!

What does Christmas mean to you? Christmas is a time to reflect upon how fortunate I am to have such a close and loving family. 2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to most this festive season? Spending time with my family, especially the grandchildren. Denis and I have 11 now! How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? No plans as yet. We are a pretty casual bunch and will probably not venture too far from our pool. Denis will probably do a smoked ham in the Weber. Do you have any favourite Christmas traditions? Creating a special Christmas cocktail/mocktails menu. We do a mix of a classics cocktails plus some we invent ourselves. Our favourite cocktail is the “Rudolph”. Equal parts of Kahlua, Baileys Irish Cream and Liquor 43 over ice in a whiskey tumbler glass. A maraschino cherry garnish is the Rudolph’s red nose. Last year’s Christmas mocktail was the Baby Yoda. See pic xx What does Christmas mean to you? Quality time with family and making memories. Cue ‘it’s the most wonderful time of the year’ song! 2020 has brought many unexpected surprises for all Australians, what are you looking forward to most this festive season? Celebrating with family and friends, and enjoying the freedom we took for granted. Goodbye 2020 and hello 2021! How do you and your family/friends plan to spend your Christmas Day this year? Dressing up, eating good food and watching the kids enjoy their presents. This year my sister and her family are coming up so I’m looking forward to cuddles with my brand new niece.

The old saying goes “if you fail to plan, plan to fail.” Planning is important to ensure success in many areas of our lives, especially when it comes to our nutrition. Getting mentally prepared for the week is critical and if you’re trying to improve your health and wellbeing, meal prepping is just as critical to achieve success. At Longevity, we know how busy life can get and how sometimes there are just not enough minutes in the day to meal prep, so we’ve taken the hard work out of it for you with our pre-prepared salads and meals that are made to order and can even be delivered to your door. We work with local dieticians everyday and we know that poor food choices are made when people are in a hurry and don’t have time to prepare something nutritious, or they don’t have access to nutritious food. Here are some of the benefits of food preparation at the beginning of the week. Limit the temptation to make poor choices and cheat Speaking from experience, when you’re in a hurry or you’re tired, you’ll grab the first thing you can find to eat. That may be fast food or junk food, or, if you prepare your food ahead of time, you could be reaching for healthy, tasty food that’s good for you. Your waistline will thank you for it, but so will your wallet, since you won’t be buying takeaway as often.

You’ll eat more veggies without even trying If you plan your meals to include healthy veggies, you’ll actually eat them. When you have your meals planned and prepped, you take the hard work out of choosing your meals every day. You’ll eat more protein and eat fewer empty calories Less junk food, combined with healthier food choices will mean you’ll feel better, have more energy, and lose more weight than if you simply try to ‘wing it’ throughout the week at meal times. When you have nutritious meals and snacks prepped and waiting for you, you’ll be less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks to curb your hunger. You’ll make better choices Meal prepping and actually sticking to your planned menu takes a great deal of self-control. But it will carry over into other aspects of your life. You’ll make better health choices when you know that you can succeed at meal prepping and planning – even if you do outsource it! You’ll alleviate stress and gain more time It doesn’t mean you need to have ALL of your meals pre-prepared, but it sure does help if you have fresh, tasty, healthy meals at your fingertips, along with some in the freezer for times when you get super busy. No more wasted time worrying about what to eat–just go and get your pre-planned, preprepped meal and enjoy the time you don’t spend slaving away in the kitchen every night.

DECISIONS YOU MAKE VIOLETTA SEKLER

Your state of mind is key to shaping your destiny and creating the future you desire. What you focus on or think about, will eventually become your reality. So it is important that we all make a conscious effort, especially in these changing global times to pay attention to our thoughts and not let them overshadow our decisions. Focussing on positive thinking is key. The mood you are in when you are making important decisions in your life, is critical. If you are angry, frustrated or even depressed, you are not likely to make the best decisions. But if you are feeling confident, joyful, inspired or hopeful, you are much more likely to be in a better frame of mind to make a sound decision as you are coming from a positive place to begin with. So how can we be in a better mood more often? According to Thrive Global, research in cognitive psychology has shown that a person’s thoughts will influence the quality of their mood as well as their life experiences and actions. In other words, what you focus on, you will feel.

C i t y L i f e 63 M a g a z i n e

5 tips to boost your mood: 1. Smile. When you smile it triggers mood-boosting hormones in the brain 2. Keep busy 3. Talk to someone 4. Help others 5. Live in the moment 6. Take a nice warm bath 7. Walk on the beach 8. Go out with a friend 9. Spend quality time with pets and family 10. Volunteer in shelters and other places that need support. You will find it a great reminder that some people are far worse off than you. 11. Listen to your favourite music Our mind is a very powerful resource that we can tap into at any time to harness the mood and motivation we need to focus our attention in a positive manner and make the best decisions in life.

THE

POWER & WORTH OF SPORT DENIS KEEFFE Mainie Founders – Denis Keeffe and Charmaine Saunders

For as long as I can remember, I have participated in a variety of competitive and recreational sports. As a child and young adult, my family resided in regional Queensland where, for us at least, the primary benefit of this participation was social, and dare I say without too much awareness at the time, health. In the 1980s, I stumbled quite accidentally into a career in professional sport. It was then that I started to understand and appreciate the economic benefits involved, not just to the clubs, associations, and athletes but especially to the broader community.

Queensland state and national events, championships, carnivals etc in Cairns. Her selected sports are hockey, basketball, athletics, and AFLW.

Cairns Basketball

While I am currently heavily committed to the pursuits of Mainie, my passion for sport and for event management has never faded. In fact, from a respectable distance, I still subconsciously analyse and evaluate any sporting event I encounter.

The economic benefit that their visits provide is often incalculable.

Also, when these teams do return to their own town or city, they subsequently promote our unique natural heritage and tourist attractions to their friends and family.

When I was CEO at the North Queensland Cowboys for instance, we conducted at least 12 home games every year, where around 20,000 people would attend each game. The production and management of these events were involved, multifaceted and very often challenged by the obvious logistical demands involved.

From professional sport to Aboriginal art and fashion – go figure.

Visitors to our beautiful city seek unique tourism experiences that they can’t get at home. They want to explore and generate fond and unique memories to take back with them.

For many visitors, the sporting event is the reason for coming to Cairns but the experiences they enjoy during the event, allows a perfectly timed “sampling” that often induces another visit.

At the regional, national, and even international levels, the emphasis is generally on the public and media perceptions of the sporting event, so the actual “event management and marketing” are at the core of the business.

After about 30 years engaged in a wide variety of professional sports, nationally, state and regional, I stepped back from the industry and launched a new fashion venture in Cairns, Mainie Australia with my wife, Charmaine Saunders.

They shop at retail outlets that are not available in their home towns and they attend markets.

This “down-stream” personal recommendation is so much more powerful than arranged media campaigns. The destination marketers will tell you that we tend to engage in activities and products that are recommended by the people within our peer group, who we know and trust. Cairns Hockey

We are so proud of her. She is good but she is humble and accepting regardless of her personal results. From attending these grassroots sporting events with her and her accompanying family, team supporters, officials and teammates, I have realised that the scale of the economic benefit to our city and region at this level is obvious and considerable. Sports events often run over many days, most times up to a week, and are well attended by thousands of visitors to our city and by locals like us, of course.

Now that we have identified the scope of opportunities to build this lucrative tourism market segment in our region, the next question is “Where to from here?” If we accept the fact that “event tourism” is lucrative, beneficial and achievable, then we can ask “How as a community with diverse sporting and cultural interests, do we explore opportunities and instigate these events?” My first suggestions are that we need to: Conduct a full audit of our existing facilities and invest in infrastructure if required; directly promote Cairns as a destination to the state and national level organizations that allocate these events; and be motivated and coordinated in the pursuit of these events.

These days I occasionally attend a national sporting event – NBL, NRL. AFL etc but primarily, my attendances now involve community sporting events.

The visiting teams and supporters often arrive a day or two before the event’s commencement date and usually stay a day or two after the event’s conclusion to “do the tourist thing”.

Charmaine and I share 11 grandchildren (we are blessed) but only two live in Cairns. They are all wonderful and individually special in their own way and some are quite talented athletically.

There is usually a “lay-day” during the event to provide a R & R day for athletes and officials, thereby presenting more opportunities for them to explore what our city and region has to offer to visitors.

A recent report commissioned by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and produced by KPMG found that sports event tourism provides significant value to communities like ours. The report noted that the utilisation of “community sports infrastructure is estimated to generate an annual value of more than $16.2 BILLION to Australia.”

One granddaughter is particularly “gifted athletically”. During the last few years this amazing young woman has attended

These visitors fill up hotels, motels, resorts and accommodation houses. They purchase food and entertainment. They hire cars and buses.

How do we in Cairns tap into these opportunities? If we have the will, we can find a way.

CityLife GARDENING

GET YOUR GARDEN GORGEOUS

It’s that time of year where everyone wants their properties looking their best over the festive season, but there is an even more important reason to get your gardens in ship shape at this time of year, and that’s cyclone and storm season. It is critical that any unsafe trees are removed and your home or commercial site is fully assessed for any proposed danger before the a storm arrives on our doorstep.

WITH MIKE DOWLING (CERT V ARBORIST) OF ADVANCED VEGETATION MANAGEMENT (A.V.M.)

Fallen trees can cause unnecessary damage to property and even worse, can contribute to powerlines falling and potential loss of life. Professional Arborists are best placed to conduct an assessment on your site and give you the right advice the first time. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I need to check with my local Council before having any trees removed from my property? Tree removal is subject to Council regulations and approval. However, those that use the services of Advanced Vegetation Management get looked after. We can take care of this for our customers and consult with any official bodies such as the local Council, to make sure any tree removal is in accordance with regulations. What if I want to remove trees from my property that are home to native wildlife? These are things that will need to be checked with the local Council before any action is taken. In extreme cases you may need to obtain approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. If the clearing you would like to undertake will have a large impact on threatened species or ecological communities, you may need special approval. Again, this is something that a professional Arborist can consult with the relevant official bodies about on your behalf. Why can’t I just lop my own trees? We discourage people from lopping their own trees for several reasons. Not only is this a dangerous thing to undertake if you are not trained and don’t have the correct equipment. You can also do irreparable damage to the trees and stunt the longevity of the trees. Incorrect lopping can encourage disease and deformity of the trees. You may save a little money in the short term but you (and the trees) will pay in other ways over the long term. Use a qualified Arborist (not a tree lopper). An Arborist is trained to identify tree problems that can lead to future issues, they can execute correct pruning and maintenance and give advice on trees with disease and structural issues.

TRUE TEAM SPIRIT

There is a team in town that you can’t half miss at the moment and they are a team that broach a myriad of sporting codes. Week in and week out they don the red, black and white and train hard to further advance in their various sporting fields. #TeamTWW is a large team of local sporting enthusiasts who are passionate about all things related to their chosen code and they’re proudly sponsored by local company Totally Workwear Cairns. The team which was established in 2018 competes across cycling, mountain biking, BMX, rally cars, triathlon and ballroom dancing, and is fast making a name for itself with exceptional results out in the field. But what’s most admirable about this group of champions is their team spirit, and their commitment to the cause and not letting their fellow team mates down even when all competitions are called off due to a global pandemic. Despite COVID-19 lockdowns and all events they had trained so hard to compete in were cancelled this year, these young men and women still found a way to train and be together, albeit socially distanced, via video chats and apps. Not one of them allowed their training to lapse as a result of COVID restrictions, as they all agreed as a team that when the events were eventually put back on, they would all need to be in great shape to compete and do what they love most. And how right they were, at the 11th hour some of their events were reinstated, such as TARGA, Tour of the Tropics and many road cycling and BMX comps. Their recent results are nothing short of outstanding, raising the eyebrows of many an onlooker. TeamTWW’s team spirit is alive and well and thanks to their sponsor they continue to raise the bar for the 2020-2021 period. The team is the brain-child of Totally Workwear owner Chris Kingsbury, who is a lover of sport and a local successful businessman and well known visionary. Mr Kingsbury initially had a plan to sponsor just a small cycling team for the 2018 Tour of the Tropics of which he was a major sponsor, but after seeing the passion in the squad who wanted to continue to excel, post event, it was a whole different story. “I was approached by Josh Rayner and Adam Johnstone about creating a road race cycling team … and the rest is history, as their friends and cycling associates wanted to create something bigger to be part of. “It suddenly went from cyclists, to BMX riders, then to TARGA rally car racing drivers, ballroom dancers, triathletes and mountain bikers. The team have a strict team code that they all live by and the core team members now approve of anyone who wants to join the team, as the group harmony is paramount. It really has become an extended part of the TWW family and the team bring great enjoyment to all of us at Totally Workwear. We all turn out to cheer them on at their races and keep abreast of their training schedules. For my wife June and I, it’s become quite the social weekend entertainment for us as we don’t have to do any of the intense training, we get to sit back and barrack for them on the sidelines as they strive to achieve their best. It’s a real family atmosphere, we are so proud of the way they continue to show up for each other,” said Chris Kingsbury.

RECENT #TEAMTWW RESULTS: TARGA GREAT BARRIER REEF • Gwesyn Dalliston and Rob Goodwin raced in the TARGA Great Barrier Reef for the second year in a row. It was great to have TARGA come back to Cairns for the 3rd year and be the 1st major sporting event post COVID in 2020. With improvement to the car, the navigator and the driver we were pleased to be on the podium in 3rd position for GT Sports Trophy. TeamTWW also finished 6th outright over all classes of the race and recorded faster times at all stages compared to 2019. BMX & CYCLING & TRIATHLON • The Annual Cairns Cycling Club Road Race Championship in Mareeba saw A Grade - Josh Rayner, Tom Cook, Brenton Koch. C Grade - Ricky Groth and Gerna Thompson and D Grade - Petra Anderson. Cook came home in 5th place. Rayner and Koch came home in 6th and 7th position in the chase group. C Grade saw Ricky Growth come home with a 1st, and Gerna Thompson came home with a creditable finish with the bunch, she continues to make gains. • D Grade - Petra Anderson showed she can hold her own even up against the men and came home with a big win. • In Yungaburra it was all triathlon mode for Adam Johnstone who joined Russell Molina and Brett Mesner to defend their team triathlon result from last year. They came away with a win and shaved 5 minutes off their previous best. But perhaps the performance of the weekend was young Miguel Groth who was also racing in Yungaburra. He had a great swim, hit the wall on the bike but regained his composure to step off the bike and collect up the competition on the run and win. Watch this space, this young man is going places. • Brian Nezbit and family took a nearly 3 week road trip to Brisbane. Brian did zero training while away but played coach and mechanic for his daughters competing in the BMX state championships. Elisha took home 2nd and wife Deanna took away the award of official of the year. On returning to Cairns without any training for almost 3 weeks, Brian placed 2nd in the premier grade of the ‘Cairns Cup on wheels’ criterium. • Petra Anderson placed 1st in her first race outside the woman’s category. Racing with the men, at the ‘Cairns Cup on Wheels’ criterium. • Brandon Hutton won every race he entered in the ‘Cairns Cup on Wheels’ track racing program, including the 4 lap handicap race where he gave some of his competition almost a lap head start. • Kirra Rayner, who is only recently back to track racing after a hiatus of 3 years managed a series of 3rd places at the ‘Cairns Cup on Wheels’ track carnival. Her father Josh Rayner came home 3rd in the Ashley Webb memorial and his other daughter Alana came 4th in the scratch race. Kirra Rayner also backed up with a 3rd in the junior Criterium on Sunday. • Cairns Cup on Wheels is the traditionally the biggest interclub track and road event in FNQ so the team did exceptionally well. Amazing results for TeamTWW! Synergy at work. C i t y L i f e 75 M a g a z i n e

A NIGHT OF REFLECTION AND CELEBRATION

UMI ARTS MARKS 15 YEARS UNDER A FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND SUN Issued by Pip Miller PR | Photos by Blueclick Photography

Wednesday 28 October 2020. It was a perfect night under a starlit sky in Cairns when the team, Board and artist members of UMI Arts came together to celebrate the organisation’s 15th anniversary. Established in 2005, UMI Arts is the peak Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and cultural organisation for Far North Queensland that provides pathways for emerging artists to become exhibition-ready and opportunities for established artists expand their skill base and distribution networks. UMI Arts is a membership-based organisation for Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists with a traditional blood-line connection to the region. In its 15-year history UMI Arts has grown from small beginnings in Martyn Street to Sheridan Street gallery and studio and more recently, a new headquarters and gallery in Jensen Street Manunda. Speaking at Saturday night’s milestone celebration at the Pullman Cairns International, UMI Arts Executive Officer Peter Lenoy said the occasion was particularly special after what has been a challenging year. “The fortitude of our organisation is testament to the way in which we have overcome the difficulties of this year’s pandemic by still managing to launch two exhibitions, including our first ever online gallery that formed part of Cairns Indigenous Art Fair’s 2020 digital program.”

The executive, administration and artist members of UMI Arts celebrated the organisation’s 15th anniversary over the weekend at a moonlight dinner on the pool deck of Pullman Cairns International. UMI Arts team and special guests (back row) L-R Peter Lenoy, Del Devina, Priscilla Major, Michael Solomon, Leo Akee and Thelma Savage (Seated) L-R Traditional Owner, Henrietta Fourmile Marrie AO & Lisa Michl OAM

Mr Lenoy said the future is bright. Just last week the organisation took possession of a new vehicle that will enable UMI Arts to develop and implement outreach programs. “This is exciting as we are now able to take UMI Arts to the communities and help those emerging artists who would otherwise be restricted. “We are about fulfilling our peoples’ potential and building pathways to future success,” Mr Lenoy said. Mr Lenoy thanked UMI Arts Board, staff, artists and funding partners for their contribution that underpinned the celebratory gathering.
