PUBLISHER’S

NOTE

The tension rising is palpable for people across the country as our beloved Australia battles the second wave of COVID-19. As we write this, we are putting the finishing touches on this edition, and as we put it to bed, restrictions are increasing, borders are closing between states and we have many wondering when the hell this will ever end. We are in very different times there is no denying that, and sticking together and supporting local businesses has never been more important. That is why the CityLife™ team has thrown its weight behind the Keep It In Cairns campaign brought to you by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Cairns Regional Council, and we have many local businesses showcasing their products and services in this edition, so please do whatever you can to support them as every dollar spent in this region stays here and supports the many families employed by these businesses. We have also thrown our support behind the early launch of the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal to help raise much needed funds for those most vulnerable in our community so they can enjoy some Christmas cheer at the end of this year when they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. So please give whatever you can to the Mayor’s Appeal, it is running from

now through until December (details on page 13 ).

We are also VERY excited to see so many events reemerging from their COVID slumber, we have a jam packed list of WHAT’S ON so we can all get out there and support one another, have some fun while social distancing and reconnect with each other in person.

Businesses are providing so many local specials at the moment, so get out there and get amongst our little piece of paradise and enjoy living in the best part of the world where we have wide open spaces wherever you turn.

The CityLife™ team is incredibly grateful for the support our loyal advertisers and contributors have shown us this year, it’s hard to believe we are so far into 2020 already!. Time has become a bit of a blur for many of us who have worked the whole way through this pandemic. We are sure we speak for everyone who has maintained their job or their business during these times when we say it’s been a slog. We are all exhausted and in desperate need of a holiday, but grateful we have businesses and jobs as we know so many don’t.

We are also extremely grateful and proud of the business resilience we have seen in our community and the way in which so many businesses are pivoting to meet the market in these times. Many of them we have showcased in this edition and we encourage you to pop into your local gift shop to buy something for a loved one just to let them know you care, or buy your mate that’s less fortunate than you a meal or a coffee from one of our fantastic restaurants doing super special lunch deals. Just get out there and immerse yourself in the best place on earth – our home town of Cairns.

What the CityLife™ team have recently started doing regularly is local STAYCATIONS, lapping up the plethora of accommodation options, restaurants, cafes and tourist attractions. We are doing mini STAYCAYS to ease the mental load and we have got to tell you it’s worked wonders for our sanity!

Essential Workers We salute them! By Danae Jones

In this edition we shine the light on our essential workers, or the people many are referring to as the “Heroes of 2020”. They are the people who’ve been rolling up their sleeves since this global pandemic began to keep our community safe, our loved ones alive and our bellies full in what are extraordinary times.

SENIOR CONSTABLE

Emma Dunlop

Cairns Police

Since February, essential workers have been busier and under more stress than ever before. Doctors, Nurses, School Teachers, Bakers, Butchers, Farmers and Military personnel have been shoved into the spotlight and forced to fight a war like no other, a biological one. One that is continually referred to as “unprecedented.” Despite the unthinkable times, there’s been an army of hard-working men and women keeping our community safe, comforted, fed and watered, and they continue to fight the good fight without seeking an ounce of praise. Our essential workers are worn out after more than six months working around the clock, but you will not see one of them complaining. There is no end in sight as they’ve all been told until there’s a vaccine, it’s a matter of getting on with the job and doing their bit to get us through to the other side. While our essential workers continue to show up day after day, and deliver at a time when it is needed most, they are not immune from all the uneasy feelings many other Australians are facing. They too have felt the fear, the anxiety, lost loved ones, been unable to attend funerals or weddings of family and friends, and they’ve suffered all the same woes just like every other person on the planet. The only difference, they’ve had to continue to deliver under the pressure. You see, they too are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandparents and partners. They too want this to end, and some days they could quite easily drop in a heap and give up … but that’s not an option for any of them. As a country we are relying on them, and they more than anyone know it – after all, that’s what drives them to get out of bed each day and soldier on. “Like everyone, I had serious concerns for my personal health and that of my family. I was also worried about the community in which I normally work. We are certainly not out of the woods in Queensland and the ongoing concern of all our health has an air of uncertainty. But I have witnessed the health response first-hand, and I am confident that any response will continue to be well managed,” SENIOR CONSTABLE, EMMA DUNLOP OF CAIRNS POLICE

OBSTETRICIAN & GYNAECOLOGIST

Dr Elizabeth Jackson

Cairns Private Hospital (Ramsay Health)

“At Cairns Private we have continued to birth during COVID. The babies never stop when things like COVID occur, so we’ve been trying to make our hospital and our consulting rooms as safe as possible for Mums and babies to feel that they can continue to receive the medical care and the midwifery care that they need through this time,” DR ELIZABETH JACKSON, OBSTETRICIAN & GYNAECOLOGIST – CAIRNS PRIVATE (RAMSAY HEALTH)

New job titles have been created overnight, new legislation adhered to and a whole new way of doing things with very limited lead time to prepare. When you witness them in action, it’s leadership at its finest. They have no time for corporate strategy or months of preparation and planning, like us, they are living press conference to press conference, just waiting to see what goal posts will be shifted next and what challenge they may need to tackle for the day ahead. It’s a willingness to step up and do whatever it takes to get the job done – it’s courage. “My normal role is as a Community Beat Officer at the Manoora Police Beat. I am now exclusively on the COVID team. Each day we are obligated to meet all incoming flights into Cairns and screen passengers. Sometimes that means screening 14 flights and up to 2000 passengers a day. It is challenging but thankfully most arrivals are compliant and understanding, “Pandemics are thankfully very rare. Certainly none of the police contingent involved (in the COVID team) have had any experience in combatting a pandemic, so I have learned new legislation and operational requirements. With all the health directive changes, it has been challenging,” said Ms Dunlop.

NURSE

Donna Gehan Cairns Hospital (CHHHS) Fever Clinic

“Prior to COVID-19 I was working at sexual health, and then we were asked to set up a fever clinic overnight, we’ve now set that up as a drive through fever clinic,” DONNA GEHAN, NURSE AT CAIRNS HOSPITAL (CHHHS) FEVER CLINIC Schools across the country have had to learn a new way of teaching, and children a new way of learning. “I think we really had to reinvent how we did things which was a bit of a challenge. But we were really all about journeying together and being in it together. You know we’re all about learning, so we really had to put our money where our mouth was and model that for students as well. So staff were learning were learning, students were learning, parents were learning, and so we had to learn all of this together – a new way of doing things,” said Wayne Wood, Principal, St Mary’s Catholic College. In Far North Queensland, in many respects, life has continued to function with as much normality as possible. We have been spared the horrendous death tolls experienced in places like the US, UK and Europe. In fact, because we’ve been spared the worst of it so far, experts say, the level of complacency that has emerged in our local community is frightening, and people need to be vigilant regardless of our cities low case numbers. For those on the front line, their message is very clear, it’s up to each and every one of us to follow the Chief Medical Officers advice and just do our bit so we can all get through this as unscathed as we possibly can. “Social distancing is a mandatory requirement. It’s as simple as that. I would encourage all people to please practice social distancing and personal hygiene,” said Ms Dunlop.

“Complacency is what’s going to make this reoccur. Being a tourist town we really do need to be mindful of the risk we have with visitors coming to the region, so therefore continuing safe social distancing, using hand sanitiser, the avoidance of large crowds and gatherings also is really important,” said Dr Jackson. The toll it has taken on some in our community is often not reported and our local doctors say the impact has been far reaching both mentally and physically. “Fertility has been a very interesting space, unfortunately initially we had to cease fertility with very short notice. And there were a number of patients who were quite significantly affected by that. Fortunately not too long into the restrictions that were placed on fertility, it was sort of cherry picked from the category 3 procedures to be able to continue, which was really wonderful for many women that needed that assistance to fall pregnant. The number of people affected by it was quite significant all around Australia, “It’s been really distressing for most people to be honest, to have that social distancing with their family, their friends, when they have their baby, that joyous occasion is somewhat interrupted by the need to be in hospital and apart from close family members in the lead up to birth,” said Dr Jackson. The mass devastation and upheaval this global pandemic has brought cannot be ignored, but there are more than a few silver linings that have arisen along the way.

“Learning has an opportunity for change, and I think we were catapulted a little bit into that different way of doing things, I think we learnt some really interesting things that I don’t think we’ll throw away, so I think that journey’s been good, but it’s also a real sense of coming together around learning. I don’t think we’ve ever seen parents be so engaged in learning as we have seen them through COVID, and I think there’s also that real appreciation for the work teachers do as well and how hard it is sometimes, and I think there’s that relationship between home and school that has really come together around this period,” SAID MR WOOD.

BAKER

Sibby Scarcella My Village Bakehouse And for those young people wondering what the future holds and whether there’ll be any jobs left at the end of all this, our essential workers would like to remind them of a few professions that until recently had become a forgotten occupation. Baking is just one profession making a big comeback.

“If you’ve been at home cooking during this pandemic and loving it and you think you’ve got it in you to do a baking apprenticeship or be a pastry cook, look into it because it is a good trade to have,” SIBBY SCARCELLA, BAKER, MY VILLAGE BAKEHOUSE

And to those in business struggling right now, this local baker has a simple piece of advice to help keep you trading. “Like I say to my staff, customer service, quality of product, and personal touch. Those three keys are what make people keep coming back,” said Mr Scarcella. And as for the attention they’ve all received through CityLife Magazine choosing to showcase them on our cover in this edition … “Personally I’m a nurse who feels very humbled to be in this profession. I really enjoy my job, I really enjoy helping people and trying to get them the best help that I can. I certainly didn’t seek this limelight, it’s not me, but we have all pulled together, we all need to pull together to get through this,” said CHHHS Fever Clinic Nurse, Donna Gehan.

L-R Janina Harding, Michael Healy, Paul Bong and Darrell Harris

QUEENSLAND ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER ARTISTS ENGINEER

In unveiling its 2020 program of events that will utilise an innovative, online format, Cairns Indigenous Art Fair has invited the world to attend its annual showcase of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture. In the spirit of its 10 year tradition, CIAF 2020 – The Cultural Evolution is a digital translation of its physical event program that in this 11th iteration is bookended by opening and closing ceremonies with a series of live stream presentations, performances, webinars, workshops, community spotlights, conversations and virtual gallery exhibitions rolling out over 10 days between Friday 14 August and Sunday 23 August 2020. CIAF’s Artistic Director Janina Harding said this year’s program is so much more than a series of events that can be embraced, engaged with and enjoyed online, but at a profound level is a reflection of First Peoples’ resilience and survival skills.

The Cultural Evolution & continue their Story Providing a digital platform for deep community engagement, cultural sharing, and economic opportunity

“From the outset of pandemic restrictions CIAF as an organisation, was asking what it could do to continue supporting artists and communities who have come to rely on the event. “For Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, CIAF plays an integral role in cultural sharing, understanding and in particular, artists’ social, emotional and economic welfare.

C i t y L i f e 20 M a g a z i n e

“After making the decision to go online we have confronted a number of challenges along the way but have also had great support from the community and especially, our funding partners who have joined with us and are also really excited to present CIAF in its digital format,” Ms Harding said. According to Ms Harding, this new era for CIAF has presented fresh opportunities and ways of doing things that she believes will be a legacy they carry on in future events. “We have been speaking regularly with the Mayors of Far North Queensland’s councils, artists and the Torres Strait Regional Authority who are all very positive while also working with a number of new and different businesses than we normally would from videographers and producers to those who specialise in virtual technology,” she said. The Queensland Government is pleased to support CIAF with annual funding of $600,000 as well as additional support for the Premier’s Award for Excellence category in the CIAF Art Awards. Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the digital delivery for CIAF 2020 was an inspiring way to enjoy the festival in what has been a challenging year for the arts community.

“I am excited to share the talent and creativity of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and performers with a potential worldwide audience, through this innovative online format,” Minister Enoch said.

Janina Harding and Paul Bong

“The Palaszczuk Government has acted swiftly to implement more than $20 million in funding relief measures for artists and arts workers impacted by COVID-19, with the sustainability of the sector and continued employment a priority,” Minister Enoch said. CIAF’s program begins on Friday 14 August with an Opening Night program of presentations and entertainment hosted by actor and writer, Elaine Crombie. Highlights from CIAF 2020 – The Cultural Evolution include two virtual art exhibitions; the Climate Change themed Art Fair and Under Currents – Cook 2020, performances from Kuranda’s favourite hip-hop, reggae band, Zennith, and other local Indigenous musicians, community spotlights from across the Cape and Torres Strait Islands, weaving workshops, conversations with topics that include the artistic response to this year’s art exhibition, fashion performance and Indigenous Tourism, Climate Change themed Symposium, children’s storytelling, art markets, ‘Water is Sacred’ fashion performance, comedy with Sean Choolburra and annual Art Awards including the Premier’s Award for Excellence. Keep It In Cairns is a community initiative by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce to help support local business owners and the economy of Cairns to encourage residents to buy locally. Together we can help secure the future of Cairns! #keepitincairns

The “Keep it in Cairns campaign is an initiative by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce, supported by the Cairns Regional Council, to encourage people to stop, think before they buy, and support local businesses. Businesses and local residents are invited to share the message in their shopfronts and through social media to serve as a reminder to people that their buying habits are important - your dollars do make a difference to your community - because what goes around comes around. Whether you are buying online or in a store or, engaging someone to perform a service, there is often a local supplier who can help. The Chamber is encouraging everyone to take stock of their buying and contracting practices, and make one change, every day if possible, to support their neighbours, local businesses and local jobs.

ACCESSORIES • Large brim hats • Baker boy caps • Headbands with crystals and bling • Head scarfs - Check out Dior • Sunglasses – Oversized and cat eye shapes • Earrings – One earring trend or one dramatic and one smaller. Hoops with charms, and clip on’s are making a comeback! (So get into your Mum or Grandma’s jewellery box) • Crosses and pearls are still very popular. • Necklaces – Chains are still going strong so if you want to add a new accessory this is my pick for you to try. Most costume jewellery stores have lots of options. Next winter you will see a return of the choker but slightly different to a couple of years ago, this time it will be more textured. • Belts – I have seen most styles both thick and thin down the catwalk. Ropes and harness styles were something new. • Socks!!! With every shoe! If you have seen your teenagers wearing slides with socks well, we are heading that way too. Look out for their reactions! So now with your list in hand I expect to see you all walking around with your track pants on, socks with mules, neck handbag, and large cross earrings. Don’t forget your latest shade of pastel pink lippy too! (Also trending!) ha ha

THE IMPORTANCE OF

A CURRENT

WILL WGC LAWYERS

As you would be aware, Wills are extremely important documents and their accuracy and content will directly impact your loved ones when you pass away. It is important to keep your Will up to date, or to have a Will prepared if you don’t already have one. Everyone who is over the age of 18 should have a valid Will.

Jacqui Lee Long

Apart from making it simpler for those family or friends left behind in managing your estate, if you don’t have a Will, when you die, your assets will be divided according to the rules of intestacy. These are rules set out in legislation that dictate where your assets will go and of course may not necessarily be as you would have wished.

Keryn Earle

Your Will really is your opportunity to direct where you would like the assets you may have accumulated over your lifetime to go. It is also an opportunity to indicate to your family your wishes about other important matters, such as who should be the guardian of your children.

Events in your life may have resulted in your Will becoming ineffective in distributing your assets in the way you intended, or even invalid. • Have nominated specific gifts in your Will that are no longer valid, for example, you have left someone a property that you have since sold

• Have separated from your partner since you made your Will • Have significantly changed your assets since you made you Will One common misconception is that any superannuation you may hold is distributed in accordance with the terms of your Will. This is usually not the case and if you are unclear as to how that may be distributed, you should take the time to review your superannuation policy and trust deed or seek advice from an experienced estates lawyer. Also note that you may be eligible for life insurance that is included in your Superannuation policy which could significantly increase your superannuation member balance therefore making it extremely important to ensure your superannuation death benefit is distributed correctly. We are experienced lawyers who practice in this area and can help you review your estate planning and establish a Will and other important documents for your estate plan such as Enduring Powers of Attorney and Binding Death Benefit Nominations, so you and your family don’t encounter any problems. WGC Lawyers make preparing your estate plan straight forward and worry free.

SURVIVING A SEPARATION NARDINE COLLIER

Having been there myself this is a topic close to my heart, how people cope after separation. I feel huge sympathy for people going through it right now, with the world turned upside down. I hope these thoughts about some positive things you can do to survive a separation might help you, or someone you care about who is going through separation. #1 It is OK to be sad – according to the experts, a separation is up there at the top of the list of life’s most traumatic experiences, underneath the death of a loved one. For many, separation is like a death. It is the end of a life as you knew it. So you don’t have to pretend it is all OK.

You’re not alone. Call on the support of family and friends. Better yet, get some professional assistance with a counsellor or psychologist, even if you feel you are doing fine, it doesn’t hurt to talk it all through and make sense of your feelings. It is especially important if you have children that you get your children help through their school or through a specially designed program such as those run by Relationships Australia. #2 Children WILL be affected by separation. They can be surprised, angry, sad, confused, insecure, frightened, and also grieving for the loss of the family unit. They can feel responsible. Chances are good, they still love the other parent and miss them greatly. They might start behaving differently at school and home. It is great if you can recognise the signs your child is struggling with the separation and get them some help, as early as you can.

• • • • •

#3 – Start taking action and getting information. Separation can be completely overwhelming. Where do you start to unravel plans for the future and finances? What should happen with arrangements for children and who gets what financially? I guarantee you, the sooner you get some advice and assistance to work out a plan of action, the better you will feel. Clients tell me time and again how much better they feel even after the first appointment because they can see some light at the end. #4 Put a routine in place for children. All the parents out there know that children thrive on stability and routine. The best post separation parenting arrangements are those that are ideally negotiated between yourselves, consistent, and provide for children to have time with both parents (if that is what is best for them). This does not necessarily mean an equal time arrangement particularly for children under school age. #5 It will get better!! At some point, these disputes will get sorted one way or the other. How quickly and affordably is up to you and the other person. If you are both committed to sorting this all out so you can both move on, it can happen quite quickly and without the expense of court proceedings. If you want to know how, call us or book an online appointment. We offer a 15 minute free consultation to get an idea of how we can assist you and what the fees might be.

THE POWER OF PR™ LET’S TALK DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT DANAE JONES

Dan ae J ones is Ma nagi ng Di r ect or o f P R & Mar k eting fir m Danae Jones Co n su lting Pty Ltd

: danae@danaejones.com.au : www.danaejones.com.au

For every $1 spent, $44.25 is the average return on email marketing investment.

When it comes to engaging in the digital space, if you are unfamiliar playing in this arena, it can be very confusing to know what gives you the best reach and engagement with your target audience. I could write pages and pages on what achieves the most effective engagement in the digital domain as it requires a holistic approach to your marketing efforts, but for the purpose of this article I’d like to focus on two of the most dominate and cost effective methods: Video and eMail communication. Let’s start with video: Video is gaining momentum online like never before and if you aren’t producing video content to promote your brand, than you’d be wise to give it some consideration as it really could bring you the attention on your social media platforms that you desire. A quality video produced about your business and your point of difference, can be a very powerful tool added to your website and imbedded into your eMail communication too. Video on average will give you three times more organic reach than plain text or images. The algorithms on social platforms favour video content over any other form. That is an undisputed fact. When you’re producing digital content, whether it be video, eMail communication or any other format, give some thought to how you can squeeze the most juice out of it for your needs. In a Wyzowl survey, when consumers were asked: «Where both text and video are available on the same web page, how would you prefer to learn about a product or service?» • 80 percent said video When companies were asked ... “Does your business use video as a marketing tool?” • 63 percent said yes That means the other 37% of companies either don’t have a video strategy or they’re late and now need to play catch up. Animoto’s survey of 1,000 customers and 500 marketers about the state of social video marketing found some key insights. Video is BIG, especially on mobile devices. • 84 percent of consumers say they watch social video content on mobile devices • 81 percent of marketers say they optimise their social videos for mobile, which includes things like planning for sound-off viewing • 39 percent of marketers create videos in square and/or vertical formats According to the customers in the Animoto survey, this is what they are more likely to share: • What’s funny • What’s emotional/inspirational • What’s educational

C i t y L i f e 37 M a g a z i n e

CityLife BUSINESS

And what they are more likely to like: • What’s funny • What’s emotional • “Behind-the-scenes” looks at the company Producing quality, engaging content takes time, patience, creativity and a solid content strategy to make sure your videos and other forms of content work to serve your marketing needs. Having a professional produce it for you does not have to cost the earth either, so don’t be afraid to reach out to video producers locally as we have many in the industry who do a fantastic job. Now let’s move on to eMail Communication: eMail Comms is actually one of the most cost effective, results driven mediums that a business can utilise. Let me share with you a little of what I know on this subject and I’ll let you be the judge. When it comes to marketing your business, it’s important to be where your consumers are. Email use is thriving more than ever before and is used by 95% of online consumers. Some would argue that people are being bombarded with email more than ever, and yes, this is true too. But more people are using their tablets, smart phones and laptops each day and are constantly connected to their email and social media accounts. Email Communication gets to people, no matter where they are – at work or at home because we are literally glued to our devices in this fast paced life. 91% of consumers reported checking their email at least once a day (Exact Target). In fact, it’s not uncommon for consumers to check their email dozens of times each day. The key to creating eCommunications that cuts through the noise of everybody’s inbox is: #1 - Email people that actually want to hear from you for a start. Instead of sending bulk emails to purchased lists, send to existing customers who already know and love you and who are far more likely to open your emails. #2 - Add value to their daily lives. Instead of just promoting your latest sales or offers, why not put yourself in your customers shoes for a moment and think, what would they appreciate receiving from me? For example: If you’re selling Kitchenware or BBQ’s, why not send them some tried and tested recipes to try at home. Always think about the value you are adding to people’s lives. We are all far too busy to read emails that are not helping us in one way or another. Email marketing and video are both highly effective public relations tools that need to be given significant consideration when developing your digital marketing strategy.

As I write this article some 4 months on from the initial COVID-19 lockdowns and reflect on the COVID-19 period one thing is very clear, uncertainty reigns supreme and no one can predict how COVID-19 will play out. Back in March I had serious concerns many of my clients, and many businesses in Cairns, would not make it through COVID-19. On top of this we were being warned for the potential of many COVID-19 deaths and were worried about elderly and vulnerable friends and family. From a business and health perspective I had feared the worst. Fast forward to now and thankfully the worst case health impacts have not materialised. In the tourism, hospitality and parts of the education sector the grim economic forecasts have been realised with the short term future looking grim. Thankfully for many other businesses a combination of the reopening of parts of our economy and record Government spending have cushioned the blow with many businesses recording much better results than expected. Whilst many businesses have escaped the full impact of COVID-19 to date we are all nervously watching what happens in the future. The second wave in Victoria has reignited anxiety in the community, seen restrictions begin to escalate and has killed off any hope of a quick domestic lead recovery for our tourism and hospitality sectors. No one knows what the short term future holds as uncertainty rules. This combined with the planned roll back of Government support from the end of September has many people again worried about their jobs and businesses as well as the health of their loved ones. As a result many of us are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. Many people are looking for help to overcome stress and anxiety caused by

COVID-19. Whilst there are no quick fixes there are some things all of us can do to get through this tough time:

Take some time out. Many of us are worn out from months of living with, talking about and thinking about COVID-19. Take some time out with friends or family (which luckily we can do here in North Queensland). Importantly get away from the daily COVID scores and analysis. I personally felt much better after taking some time, off the grid, with my family recently. Take a long term perspective. Whilst the current situation in at least some parts of Australia appears grim, and the short term is very uncertain, we need to keep things in perspective. Overall Australia, and Queensland in particular, is faring much better than many other countries. Long term I believe North Queensland with its low density living and warm climate will be seen as a great place to live. There is lots to look forward to once COVID-19 passes. Get your finances in order. Now is the time to take stock of your business and personal finances and put together a plan. Engage a specialist if you need to, those who are prepared with a plan will come through COVID-19 in much better shape than those who don’t. If you need a hand ask for help. Whether its financial support, emotional support, or just having someone look after the kids while you catch up, don’t be afraid to ask for help. As family, friends and a community, we all need to support each other to make sure we get through this tough time. Whilst many of us are stressed at the moment as the old saying goes it’s always darkest before the dawn. I still see a bright future for our community and our region.

NEW AGE OF TRAVEL

COVID MERCEDES GONZALEZ : : : :

They say practice what you preach right? Well if anyone is going to do it, may as well be me. I jumped at the opportunity to visit the Hunter Valley- they had me at VINO. A new destination for me, an escape to regroup and support our country. Bags packed and winter wardrobe sorted for my favourite time of year to travel south, winter. Double checked my G Permit was up to date as things seem to change spontaneously. QLD borders open, NSW good to go, so here I come. Ah the Qantas Club, how much I missed you. For a moment life seemed normal, barista coffee and plated food. Got to be happy with that. Yes, I flew Jetstar not many direct flight options to Sydney but was pleasantly surprised with their attitude and response to COVID-19. COVID kits were made available at boarding gates (inc. mask) and off I went. BTW - Don’t expect a meal service unless you prepaid as only water supplied. Landed in Sydney, how exciting even though I can’t tell you how many times I’ve travelled there before, it’s still one of my favourite cities in the world. It’s worth mentioning how cheap the 5 star hotels are right now. Here I was in the lobby of my flash hotel only to be met by what appeared to be “hotel officials” who presented their instrument at my forehead for temperature check. All good he said, you can check in now. Well not to be. “Sorry Ms Gonzalez, the NSW government has ceased the hotel for quarantine overnight (5 star quarantine, who’s complaining) and you have been moved to another hotel. We tried to call your travel agent.” Ha! That old chestnut. Not sure what has happened to me, but all of a sudden I smiled and said thank you. Must be all these months practicing new breathing techniques as I’m presented with a new drama every day it seems. Thankfully lunch was booked at the Oyster Bar overlooking that gorgeous bridge. Been there a few times and couldn’t wait for my oysters.

My Tip: pre-book all meals. Off to the Hunter, lunch booked at Baume Restaurant and some serious wine tasting to be had. It was only their second weekend open so everything was booked out or not quite open. Since my Uganda trip last year I have become quite adventurous, and I have decided that I will try new things. I’ve gone off high rise, roof tops and swim up bars. Done them to death. Soft adventure is the new me. Off road Segway tour, sign me up! … and off I went into the countryside and wineries. The wine history is not foreign to me. My parents spent a good part of their youth (not a word of English) when they arrived in Australia with the two of us (kids) picking grapes in the Riverina. I loved the Hunter, probably should have booked more restaurants though. Cheese platters on offer at the many wine tastings did suffice, we were however a bit limited for dinner. There is something good for the soul in the country. Can’t pin point it, maybe the fresh air, the views or just the down to earth people who truly capture the spirit of our country.

I know it’s a personal thing to travel right now, but it’s still safe to plan. One thing is for sure, memories outweigh dreams any day. Stay safe.Stay safe.

Scanning mobile at each venue was the new norm and they took it very seriously. Unfortunately dining out that evening was not to be. No booking, no dinner.

GYMS ARE REOPEN & FITNESS FANS ARE SQUATTING FOR JOY YOUR FITNESS CAIRNS - MARSHA ROHWEDER

During lockdown many good habits and routines completely went out the window. A large percentage of us went down the rabbit hole of procrastination, sleep in’s and binge eating. Many of us also were doing more bicep curls with a wine glass than a dumbbell. Despite the inactivity leaving most of us less fit, the good news is, just like a New Year’s Resolution, post lock-down is the perfect time to refocus and make positive changes. Make a list of new habits you would like to embrace and implement them one by one … starting with exercise. Why should I go back to the gym or my regular exercise routine? You cannot put a price tag on your physical and mental health. The old saying “you only have one body to live in” has never been more relevant. Regular physical activity can reduce high blood pressure, help manage weight and reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes (all conditions that can increase susceptibility to COVID-19). Exercise can also help you sleep better, plus exercise can give people a real sense of accomplishment and pride at having achieved a goal helping people who have mild depression and low self-esteem. How do I prepare myself both physically & mentally to go back to my regular gym routine? START SLOW! You cannot go from 0 to 100 as soon as things open up. The risk of injury skyrockets when people abruptly increase the amount or intensity of their workout. A good starting point would be to take half the weight you were doing prior to lockdown and increase it by a small amount each time. Take at least a month to 6 weeks to get back to your regular routine. Listen to your body and watch for fatigue.

KEEP STRETCHING: Stretching is incredibly important to help avoid injury. Yoga classes are brilliant for both the mind and body. HYDRATE: The more you sweat the more water your body loses. Your body runs best when it is well hydrated, so, if you are going to start working out more, drink more water. CONSIDER GETTING A PERSONAL TRAINER: If you need an extra push to get you started now is a great time to get advice from a professional. HOW SAFE IS IT GOING BACK TO GYMS? To reopen all gyms must adhere to health recommendations including physical distancing, hygiene and contact tracing. At Your Fitness the new warm up and cool down is wiping equipment before and after use. Hand sanitiser is mandatory and everybody must use a towel as a barrier on equipment. The Cleanliness of the Gym & Equipment is our top Priority. FINAL THOUGHT: Whilst people are excited at the prospect of getting back into the gym, it’s also okay to feel a little overwhelmed. Remember to start slow, ease into things with easy workout routines, have fun with your training and stay safe. Your Fitness memberships start at $13.95 per week | No lock in contract | 24/7 access | All group fitness included | T’s & C’s apply www.yourfitness.net.au

SOCIAL GOOD:

Announcing a Weekly Shift for Women of Worth Lulubelle’s owner gorgeous Beck Child’s passion to empower women has stepped up a notch with the Edge Hill boutique’s socially conscious Women of Worth program collaborating with other local businesses and moving from a monthly to a weekly endeavour.

For those of you who are unaware of the beautiful clothing boutique Lulubelle’s Clothing; it is a local clothing boutique beautiful Edge Hill. Opened in 2013, Lulubelle’s has always had a charity focus and a strong vision to support the local community.

Since being introduced two years ago, 24 women who have been nominated in need of love and recognition have been the recipients of a monthly, Women of Worth package.

Known for its contribution to worthy causes, Lulubelle’s has previously supported both charities and philanthropy causes.

According to Beck Child’s, each deserving woman has received a free styling session, a gift and a $150 voucher to spend in store at Lulubelle’s.

Lulubelle’s ongoing initiative, ‘Handbag Help’ 2014 -2019, is run every December supporting Ruth’s Women’s Shelter, a charity Organisation alleviating the suffering of domestic violence in Cairns.

“We have had such great results from our Women of Worth and feel we are making a difference to the lives of local women – however I wanted to do more and have realised that one woman and one business can only do so much,” Ms Child said. With her vision to increase the number of recipients to receive a Women of Worth package, to a weekly initiative, Ms Child went in search and secured the support of other local businesses and individuals. To nominate a Women of Worth, visit www.lulubelles. com.au and click the Nominate Now tab and fill in the details. To donate a prize for the Women of Worth gift packages, email beck@lulubelles.com.au. All donations will be managed by Lulubelle’s and in return, sponsors will receive recognition on the website.

Every December Lulubelle’s accepts donations from the public of handbags, new or used, filled with useful items for women and children who may have had to leave their homes due to domestic violence. The response to ‘Handbag help’ has been positive and every year it increases in donations. Lulubelle’s has also fundraised for sizable donations to the following causes: Street Level Youth Care, Destiny Rescue – Support for 6 Girls 2013 - 2016, Brain Cancer Research – Cancer Fashion Show 2018, Multiple Sclerosis Fundraiser 2016/17

So why the pin up style?

“I’ve always been drawn to the pin up photography style, it resonates with me because it’s fun, playful and eye catchy, I wanted to get the attention of the public.”

As the Coronavirus crisis closed business after business in Cairns, one thing it couldn’t put a stop to was the creativity of popular local photographer & businesswoman Veronica Sagredo of Blueclick Photography, who harnessed the enforced “down time” to conduct one of her most ambitious projects yet to help the business community. ‘Ladies in Business’ is a project that features a female business owner every day for 30 days - but with a twist. Each woman is photographed in “pin up style”, with hair, makeup, outfits and props reminiscent of the pin up style of the 1940’s and 50’s era. For the majority of the women, this was the first time they’d been photographed in this kind of style, and there were plenty of nerves along with the laughs and excitement. Each photo also has an accompanying interview about that woman and her business and business tips they get to share with everyone.

“When the COVID crisis began happening, I felt overwhelmed with sad news. Cairns is at heart a tourism town, but it is also a place full of small business owners and self employed people and COVID affected everyone. I saw the effects happening first-hand in my own business, but also in the businesses of many wonderful women around Cairns. I wanted to do something to give people a smile, give them something else to focus on for a time, and give some publicity to their businesses by featuring the women behind the business.” I wanted to showcase a diverse range of industries from a wide variety of local businesses Some of the women featured in the photo series include Bridget Evans from Paronella Park (Tourism), Charisse Russell from HK Russell (Financial Services), Hannah Lane (Hairdressing). Bridget from Paronella Park says “Participating in the Ladies in Business program was so much fun! When Veronica mentioned the project, I was feeling pretty low. Paronella Park was closed due to COVID, and I was a ball of stress! Spending a day getting dolled up and hanging out with Veronica was the perfect medicine. The fact that she is undertaking a project of this scale – completely for free – speaks to her character and generous spirit.” With the project almost at its end, Veronica says she has been overwhelmed with requests from other ladies wanting to be part of it, I didn’t expected to have such a great response, some suggesting to have a calendar or a book made.

The Ladies in Business photo series can be viewed on BlueClick Photography’s Website, Facebook and Instagram pages. www.blueclickphotography.com.au

Adapt Embrace www.creatingmoments.com.au

The wedding industry, like many industries in North Queensland, has been hit hard by the effects of COVID-19. What originally started as the initial decisions by clients to postpone or cancel April – June weddings, when the original lockdown across Australia first began, has led to an ongoing ripple effect of significant changes. Many couples who had weddings booked for August, September, October were holding onto every possible hope that Australia would be in a better position by their date and their dream wedding would go ahead. Now, with the restrictions around border closures, international and domestic travel and the quarantine rules in place, many have realised that their families and special guests may not be in a position to travel. Adapt and Overcome! That’s the message I’ve communicated to my clients, and thankfully, many of them have taken this advice on board. For some, sadly cancelling or postponing is the only option for 2020 however, many have chosen to change up their big wedding plans and create the perfect unique elopement or simply, marry now and party later!

The Team: The Raw Photographer Hudson Films Events Makeup and Hair Cairns Cairns Luxury Limousines Creating Moments with Tammy Barker

What do you mean by, ‘marry now and party later’, I hear you ask? It merely means, lock-in the legalities of your marriage now with your chosen celebrant, working within the COVID guidelines and select a date in 2021 to hold your reception party with your special VIPs and your favourite wedding vendors. Some couples are even asking to re-create a commitment ceremony of sorts to be held on their new celebration date. Many of us celebrants are jumping at the chance to be part of this. C i t y L i f e 52 M a g a z i n e

If that sounds like too much work, then eloping may be the answer for you! What I love about elopements is that you can create and experience your day, your way! All that is legally required to elope is the celebrant, two witnesses and the official paperwork. Destinations like Port Douglas, Fitzroy Island, the Daintree, the Atherton Tablelands are all favourite elopement locations here in North Queensland. I was fortunate to be part of the most epic elopement in May up at Emerald Creek Falls on the Tablelands. Jesse and Madi had originally planned to be married in early May in Port Douglas, but due to COVID their venue was shut down, and guest numbers were restricted to five. Instead of postponing or cancelling, they adapted their wedding plans and overcame the bad situation by choosing to elope. With the help of a dedicated, professional vendor team who had their best interests at heart, their adventurous elopement at Emerald Creek Falls was created and successfully delivered. It was a unique, intimate, magical day with only five of us onsite, that culminated with Madi and Jesse becoming, Mr and Mrs Roberts. Remember, if your 2020 wedding plans have been affected by COVID, look for the silver lining, adapt and overcome and work closely with your team of wedding vendors to find the best solution. Best wishes, Tammy Barker – Marriage Celebrant Creating Moments with Tammy Barker

Staff moved deftly to enable quality remote learning for all students, while teachers harnessed the latest technology to adapt lessons for home-based learning. But one thing that has never wavered is a commitment to quality education for all children, now and in the future. Cairns Catholic Education has introduced a raft of measures to make sure financial stressors do not disadvantage families seeking a quality education in the Far North. Fee concessions of 100 per cent are available for those who are financially distressed, to ensure no child’s education is interrupted. New families will be eligible for the same concessions, and there will be no increase in tuition fees in 2021, so there is no reason not to join the Cairns Catholic Education community. It is this combination of wide-ranging financial relief and advanced technological capabilities that saw Catholic schools excel during COVID-19 restrictions, and in the months to follow. Cairns Catholic Education’s Executive Director Bill Dixon has received many favourable comments about the system’s ability to adapt to the crisis. This is testament, he says, to the agility of school staff, and validation of the huge investment in quality systems and technology that Cairns Catholic Education has made in recent years. “Staff responded with professionalism to keep the welfare and learning of students at the centre of their actions,” Bill says. The technology in place made the transition that bit easier, despite posing a steep learning curve for many under less than ideal conditions. Staff, students and families made huge leaps forward in their ability to use digital platforms for learning and communication, adapting very quickly to the online environment. Schools that were already incorporating digital technologies into their lessons found the transition to home-based learning much easier. “By the time the coronavirus shutdown occurred, the Science Department already had Microsoft Teams in place as the system to interact digitally with students,” says St Augustine’s College, Parramatta Park Head of Science, Jesse Zell.

Remote learning success: Catholic schools adapted quickly to remote learning and will embed successes going forward in both face-to-face and remote learning as circumstances require. “You would never in your wildest dreams imagine a school thriving amidst such a challenge.” Families in the Cairns Catholic Education community can be assured that their children’s education will always continue to a high standard, regardless of any hurdles they may face. Catholic schools recognise and value parents as the first educators of their child. The learning from home experience reinforced the importance of this relationship and ensured families felt supported by their school communities. Catholic schools are incorporating their learnings from COVID-19 to better position themselves for future disruptions and will ensure successes experienced during online learning are embedded into regular classroom practice to enhance educational opportunities for all students. Parents must choose the right school for their child, including one that can be responsive to their needs for the future. Catholic schools have proven they are up to the task. “We are so grateful to Saints for how they fairly and proactively managed all aspects of the COVID-19 shutdown for our son and our family. The learning from home experience was well delivered and organised, and we welcomed the removal of boarding fees during this difficult time,” tells one parent at St Augustine’s College, Parramatta Park. All families who seek fee relief can be assured that their enquiries will be treated with respect and confidentiality. www.cns.catholic.edu.au

Hello we are Hugh and Quin, we are four year old twin brothers. We love growing up in Cairns. There’s so many adventures to take. One day is never the same. We’d love to share with you some of our favourite’s.

Goomboora Park Adventure Playground Definitely one of our favourites. Awesome shallow spots to swim. We made boats out of leaves and they raced down the little rapid. The adventure playground is so cool! There’s two flying foxes, so we get to race one another. You can even bring your doggy along cause there’s a special dog area and they also can hop in the water to cool down. Esplanade Lagoon One of our go tos! It’s a big salt water pool and you never have to worry about stingers or crocodiles. You get to meet heaps of mates you can play with too. Ellis Beach We think Ellis Beach is the most awesome beach! Because there’s a creek that runs into the ocean, loads of rocks to climb, and little fish to try to catch. Mossman Gorge This was our first big hike (other than the yellow arrow). We were told it was where we could find some big dinosaur footprints and spots where they swam so many years ago. It was a very big walk, but we loved the cold swim and jumping across the many big rocks. Hartley’s Creek Falls Hike Cause we were so good at Mossman Gorge walk. We thought we were ready for this next big hike, Hartley’s Creek Falls. We both winged a little as our legs were a bit sore. But we didn’t give up! We kept searching for Dinosaur bones and fossils. We had a half way stop and a cool down at the middle. Then we finally made it to the top...biggest water fall ever. It was freezing! We go out most weekends on little adventures otherwise Mum thinks we’ll just stay at home and fight with one another. We hope you will visit and love some of the cool spots as much as we do.

About: Shelby is a real sweetheart and loves a cuddle but sadly it seems that she has not had much of a social life as she is unsure of many things other dogs take in their stride. Car rides seemed to be new to her and she was a bit apprehensive at first but gradually became a bit more comfortable with the ride. Other dogs, she seems unsure of

how to react around them, “should I be on guard or do they want to play with me… not real sure what this playing is all about!! She will need someone who will let her experience the world and encourage her along the way to make her feel safe and secure. Shelby will also need a high timber or colour bond fence to keep her safely confined when at home.

About: A word about Quinton from his foster carer Quinton has been a part of my life as my foster dog now for about 4 months. My own dog Milo and I love him to bits. My dog Milo who can be a little protective of me and his space has taken so well to Quinton right from word go. He never rouses on him and accepts him completely as his bestie. Quinton will always go where Milo is, lie where he is and just loves to hang out with him. He is such a fun and totally loving dog. He has had a bad start in life so can be a little anxious with new people but once he has adapted to a new environment and a new family he will be the most loyal dog. He does not have a bad bone in his body. He is such a fun dog. High energy so does need plenty of runs especially first thing in the

morning then he will be settled for the rest of the day. A doggie playmate would be ideal and every dog I have seen him with seem to like him. he has not experienced children really with me but I feel certain he will be fine and love their attention if they are kind to him and give him time to adjust. He is a smart dog and has learnt good doggie manners with just a little training. He makes me laugh all the time and is the most affectionate and smoochy dog I have ever looked after. I wish for this beautiful boy a kind and loving home where his needs will be met and he can express his full potential as a loving and confident dog. You will enjoy the sense of joy and fun that he exudes. He will repay your kindness with love +++

About: Mutley is the newest guy into Yaps, he was a rescue from the local pound, so at this stage we do not know much about him. One thing we were told that he needs

a home with no small children as he likes play a bit rough but with a bit of training and love we are sure this boy will be a loyal and loving companion to the right family.

About: About: This girl has energy plus and at times a mind of her own. She is going to need an owner who is prepared to put time into training her and providing her with lots of exercise/stimulation.

Olivia will need love but guidance with a strong owner so that she knows what is expected of her. With this bit of effort you will have yourself one loyal friend and companion.

About: Flo was a rescue a while back from the local pound, she came into us pregnant and just a short time later had her babies in our care. She was an exceptionally good Mumma but her babies have all gone off to their new families

so now it is her turn for a new beginning. Flo is not good with small dogs or cats… she is a high energy girl who gets on with some male dogs who she can “boss” around!!!

Resilience

CityLife BUSINESSLIFE

BUSINESS LESSONS:

I am Denis Keeffe, the co-founder of a uniquely Australian Aboriginal art and fashion label, Mainie. The story of Mainie is really the story of my wife Charmaine. It is her concept, her creativity and her passion. I have been there from the beginning but from an almost completely different perspective. I have certain qualities that I inherited from my family upbringing and then further developed from lessons learned from my own experiences. Charmaine and I often discuss the business whether, it be strategic planning for the future, risk assessment and subsequent risk mitigation, business development, finance, etc. During these discussions, she almost always says that even though I do not have all the answers, I do possess an attribute that compensates for my lack of a fashion industry background. It is my resilience. Most people can develop skills that are useful, almost mandatory in business, but resilience must come from the inside. The ability to recover from setbacks and defeats is personal and powerful. Resilience is acquired and even perfected by a multitude of life experiences from unbelievable successes to more often than not absolute and devastating failures.

I have been engaged in the world of professional sport for around thirty years and I know how high the successes can be - the glory, the contentment, the exhilaration, the fame, the adulation. Conversely, I have been gutted by the shattering loss. There is no middle ground in this regard. You either win or you lose.

Winning is easy. It is what the hard work is all about. It is the reward. The only real issue about winning is winning the right way. That is, with humility and acknowledgement to the many factors and people who contributed to the success. Losing is devastating. But like winning, losing must be embraced for what it is. It is a problem to solve and a lesson worth experiencing, because when you lose, you can do one of two things. You can give up or you can go again. The going again is called resilience.

I was recruited to North Queensland Cowboys as the CEO in the back end of the NRL season 2001. The club was fervently supported by a North Queensland fan base that personified the game of Rugby League. North Queensland was then and still is today one of the genuine heartlands of the sport. Rugby League permeates almost every element of society at all levels. The Cowboys were perennial non-finalists since their inception in 1995. In 2004, the Club made the play-offs for the first time in its history and our team was extremely unlucky to lose in a qualifying final to the Sydney Roosters in very controversial circumstances. I have never made comment on this devastating result and I never will. It was shattering, but we started planning 2005 immediately. The 2005 NRL season saw the Cowboys rise up again and dominate throughout the season, only to lose the Grand Final in Sydney to the Wests Tigers. This loss crushed us in the club, our supporters, and our communities in the north. However, in hindsight this second shattering defeat provided the impetus and motivation to get back on that horse and once again show the world that losing can be motivational and inspirational if the collective possesses RESILENCE. It took another ten years for the Cowboys to register their first premiership Grand Final win, but persistence, courage, and resilience finally prevailed in 2015. At his best, golfer Tiger Woods was virtually unbeatable. But there was an occasion during his glory days when he lost badly at a major tournament and the press gallery was gobsmacked. He was asked all sorts of “what now” questions and he responded simply by saying, “I’ll be OK – the sun will rise tomorrow”. Tiger was not being dismissive of the result; he was just demonstrating his incredible resilience. Although some may have been quick to write him off, he went on to win many tournaments after this defeat. I am writing this article at a time when a global pandemic has devastated the business world. There has never been an economic crisis like this in living memory. The world as we knew it only a few months ago may take years to fully recover, if at all. Things that we once took for certainties are gone, maybe forever. The Mainie team has two choices now as we look to the future for our business in these challenging times. We can give up or we can keep going. At Mainie, we have chosen to keep going. Resilience.

THE PACE PROJECT By Jill Boltz | Pace Project Founder

A RUNNING GROUP FOR 10 TO 30 YEARS, BASED IN CAIRNS WORKING TOGETHER TO BE THE BEST ATHLETES THEY CAN.

“From little things, big things grow” “Good things take time” Back in 2012 I started a junior running group in Cairns and these above quotes were at the forefront of my mind. As coach I had big visions for the team of junior runners. I wanted each member of the team to have the opportunity to be the best that they could possibly be. The junior runners were like me from the wrong end of the country. Unfortunately coming from up North did not provide the best opportunity for athletes. I needed to show my team of athletes that our disadvantage was in fact going to be our advantage. Even though we did not have the races, the competitions nor the numbers, it did not matter. What did matter was that we were all on the same page working together as a strong team. The same page to me is an understanding in one another, showing consistency, loyalty, trust and a common goal. It took several years to create this pattern, however once established the dedicated team started to gain results and attracted more like-minded runners to our team. We had structure and trained consistently and with this the pages started turning in the story of our journey. The year 2016 saw a breakthrough for our group. At State Cross Country we had 48 runners travel to Maryborough, 18 of these made the top 20, two of the group were crowned State Cross Country Champions (Clio Ozanne-Jaques & Ollie Boltz) and six of the team qualified for Nationals. To us this was a MASSIVE achievement! After 2016 Nationals the team were starting to realise that they were not just a big fish in a little pond. Not only did running win them medals, but it also offered so much more; confidence, ownership, belief, discipline, and for some a pathway to a paid education. As the hard work and dedication continued, we began to win National medals. In 2017 Clio went on to represent Australia at both the World Cross Country Championships in Uganda and the World U20 Track and Field Championships in Finland. As a result of this achievement Clio gained a fully funded scholarship to Division 1 School, Ole Miss in the USA. In the 2018 National Cross-Country Championships there were seven Pace Project athletes in the top 10, with a further four in the top 20. During 2019 Toby Gillen won four State Championship titles. Which brings us to today, 2020, and the pages are starting to form a new chapter. The Pace Project now has over 80 athletes including our new group in Townsville. Despite the challenges of COVID, the athletes have continued to train smartly, work on their weaknesses and are looking forward to racing again. As I look back over the last eight years, I realise how much I have learnt from the athletes, how far we have come, yet how far we still have to go. I am always learning and enjoying it, I understand success only breeds success. Knowing why we are successful and what we need to do better or differently to get to the next level. But ultimately we know we are on this journey together, and the chapters of our story are only just beginning. For further information contact Jill Boltz at Pace Project paceproject@outlook.com

Recent times have been filled with many storms and a hell of a lot of change. Change that many of us have not wanted, so it has brought about a lot of anxiety for people on many levels and for differing reasons. But not all storms come to disrupt our lives, some come to clear our paths. And what if the current series of events in time are here to clear a path for humanity and pave the way for a new and improved way of doing things? I myself have found I have had more time with my family which has been a true blessing. I have also found myself feeling grateful for the simplest things in life. I have had more time to explore in my own backyard and become tourist if you like in my own city. I have soaked up the amazing places to stay and the wonderful food at our local restaurants and I have even been able to travel domestically recently which was really lovely to getaway from home for a while and immerse myself in another destination as the borders re-opened. As I write this, restrictions are starting to increase across many states and territories in Australia as we battle the second wave of COVID-19 - and the tension is rising once again. But I would like to challenge you to take whatever comes your way as an opportunity and a blessing, not an obstacle this time round. People are discovering how to do things differently, in business and in their personal lives. We are learning that face to face business meetings are not as essential as we once thought they were and that so much can still be done online and from home. We are craving connection with our friends and family C i t y L i f e 65 M a g a z i n e

like never before seen in this generation, because we are being deprived of that physical contact we once had so readily available to us, but often chose to push down the priority list due to the busyness of life. Let me ask you, could this be the shift in perspective we all needed? Now I’m not saying COVID-19 should be welcomed, but I challenge you to sit back and look at the silver lining it may be bringing to your life and the lives of others. Perspective is a very powerful thing and there is no doubt it has universally shifted the global perspective in the blink of an eye.

As the second wave grips our nation, remember, most of your stress comes from the way you respond, not the way life is. Adjust your attitude, and all that extra stress will be gone. Let’s tackle what is thrown at us one day at a time. Be kind to ourselves and those around us. Do our best in the circumstances and ask ourselves every day what can we be grateful for, what is the silver lining in all of this. There is no doubt we will learn many lessons from these times, but learning is also an imperative for future growth. Let’s find the opportunity in everything.

EATING YOURSELF

HAPPY ALLI FIELDING

Throughout this uneasy time it is important that we all focus on feeding our bodies with nourishing food that helps lift our mood and support our mental wellness. I am far from an expert on this topic so I have decided to bring in the experts for this edition to help you understand what I know to be true. According to Headspace, when you think of improving your mental health, you may not think about changing the food you eat. But there is a strong link between what you eat and how you feel! “We know a poor diet can make you feel sluggish, low and increase symptoms of depression and anxiety. But now we are seeing a healthy diet (with a variety of fruit, veggies, nuts and wholegrains) can actually improve mental health.

A l l i F i eld ing O wn er L on g evi ty Ca ir ns Centr al and S m ith fiel d : +61 400 078 456 : CAIRNS CENTRAL SHOPPING CENTRE Cnr Mcleod & Spence Street. Cairns LONGEVITY SMITHFIELD Cnr Kennedy Highway & Capt Cook Highway, Smithfield : www.eat4longevity.com.au

This is a pretty new and exciting area of research. Two recent studies investigated whether healthy food could reduce depression symptoms. And the results were clear. People who ate a healthier diet improved their depression symptoms more than people who focused on only social support.” Here’s how eating well can improve your headspace: • help you get a better night’s sleep • give you more energy • improve your concentration • make you less likely to crave foods with high sugar, salt or fat.

Professor Felice Jacka, Director of the Food and Mood Centre gives her tips to eating a healthier diet for your mental health: • Often we turn to unhealthy snacks when we are stressed. So it’s good to develop coping strategies that are not related to food - like exercise or mindfulness. • We know that some foods are very good for a healthy mind. Make sure your diet includes things like: colourful fruits and vegetables, foods high in fibre (wholegrain cereals and bread, beans, chickpeas, lentils and nuts), fermented foods like unsweetened yoghurt, olive oil, and fish (tinned is fine). • Make small changes that are easy to stick to. Start by swapping an unhealthy afternoon snack for a healthy one, like a piece of fruit. • You don’t have to be perfect, and don’t be too hard on yourself. A burger or a chocolate bar are fine every now and then (say, once on the weekend). But it’s important to make sure your diet includes a variety of nutritious foods, most of the time! • Try to avoid too much red meat – a little bit is fine but keep it to 3-4 times per week. At Longevity we pride ourselves on making healthy, affordable options for all tastebuds that are pre-prepared to take the hassle out of it for you. LEARN THE HEALTHY HOME OFFICE WITH

Limberlost

Whether temporary or permanent, the home office has become an important space as more people are working from home. A pleasant and comfortable work zone will improve work satisfaction and productivity. If a temporary home office space is required, here are some keys to ensure that your workspace is a pleasant and enjoyable place to be. THE POSITION Ideally a space away from the activities of the household is desirable. A spare room transformed is excellent if this is available. It will mean changes and rearranging, but this is normally achievable with skilful use of space.

It is not always possible to find a spare room and a small area of the main living space may need to be claimed. This should be screened off from the living area as much as possible. Plants are great for screening off a separate workspace. Create your own little jungle corner. THINK BIG If the space is available, bring in some large potted plants. Olive trees are very hardy and will cope with periods indoors. Even Citrus trees can be added to your indoor space and bring with them a wonderful fresh fragrance. Think outside the normal to bring the natural goodness of the outdoors to the indoor spaces.

THE WORKSPACE A desk or table with ample room for equipment is ideal. The key to working at home is to be organised. Bookwork and papers can easily be piled if organised correctly. A comfortable chair is a necessity for the long hours of sitting. To be able to use the chair from the ‘normal’ office is a huge advantage if this is possible. A beautiful potted plant or two in your space will make life much more pleasant. THE ROUTINE Work in some daily exercise. Have your start and finish times. Take your breaks with a walk around the garden. This is a great chance to check on the progress of the veggie patch. A ten minute stretch and stroll is recommended for each hour of sitting. When the workday is done, close everything down and be prepared for the next day. Resist the temptation to return to work projects until it is start time tomorrow. A good walk or a half hour in the garden will give a great unwind time to move into an after-work mindset. Plants are proven to improve the air quality and general well-being of our spaces and our lives. Now more than ever, it is important to connect with nature and with each other. Make your ‘Stay at Home’ time an experience to refocus and reset the important things of life.

YOUR VIEW Windows will give access to fresh air and a view of the great outdoors. A view into the garden is fantastic and will connect you beautifully. If the view is less than inspiring, create a view with plants. This can be a garden or a collection of potted plants. C i t y L i f e 72 M a g a z i n e

Covid Cocktails...

With so many restrictions at the pubs and clubs, boozing at home is booming. Here’s a couple of quickies you can easily make at home. Cheers, from CLM team.

Classic Aperol Spritz Simple grab a wine glass Pour equal measure of Aperol and to Prosecco into the glass with a splash on soda an a slice of orange. So refreshing!

Vodka Martini Stir the vodka, dry vermouth and a little ice together or put them in a cocktail shaker to combine. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Serve with an olive on a cocktail stick or a twist of lemon peel.

Mojito Pour 60ml of white rum into a glass. Muddle the lime juice, sugar and mint leaves in a small jug, crushing the mint as you go – you can use the end of a rolling pin for this. Pour into a tall glass and add a handful of ice. Pour over the rum, stirring with a long-handled spoon. Top up with soda water, garnish with mint and serve.

SKYTRAILS CAIRNS

LET’S PUT CAIRNS ON THE MAP!

Image provided by TTNQ

What started off as an idea between mates after a weekly mountain bike ride has turned into potentially one of the most exciting adventure tourism products that Cairns has seen in years. Tony Trafford and the boys from the Thirsty Thursday MTB crew are avid riders. Most weeks you’ll find the boys taking on the trails at the Smithfield MTB Park or checking out nearby Kuranda, Atherton and Davies Creek. For the last few years, they’ve even flown to Derby, Tasmania to see what mountain biking has done for that small town, where 30,000 visitors from all over world take on the mountain, spending $30 million per year doing so. And it begged the question, why couldn’t Cairns also become a world-class mountain bike destination and tap into the exploding MTB adventure tourism scene? We had successfully hosted the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in 2017 and the UCI World Cup, but the momentum it seemed had been lost.

We’ve consulted with one of the leading trail designers in the country, Glen Jacobs from World Trail, to create a blue print of the trail network that has not only excited mountain bike enthusiasts, but also the Cairns Regional Council, local business, and even both sides of the State Government. Our petition, calling for support of the project has attracted nearly 5,500 signatures and recently the project was tabled in State Parliament with Shadow Tourism Minister, David Crisafulli (LNP) pledging $150,000 to fund a detailed feasibility study, if he is elected in October this year. There has never been a more important time to create growth for our region. This project will attract a totally new market to Cairns, who will come to ride our trails, but also want to experience what we’re already known for – the reef and the rainforest. If you would like to know more about the project or to sign our petition, please head to www.skytrails.com.au

And hence, the SkyTrails Cairns Project was formed with a mission to put Far North Queensland back on the world map for mountain biking. Our Plans The SkyTrails Cairns Project has 3 stages to ultimately provide riders with 120kms of new trails to cater for all levels of experience. Stage One: The Smithfield MTB Park will get an upgrade and an additional 60 km of trails. Stage Two: The iconic Kuranda Downhill gets a major upgrade and expansion to become a shared 2-way hiking and 1-way MTB trail, with new blue and green trails showcasing the views of our famous coastline.

Some of the Thirsty Thursday MTB crew

Stage Three: Our “Jewel in the Crown”, incorporating the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to transport riders to the Red Peak Skyrail Station to begin their downhill descent on the highest elevated and the longest single track of the SkyTrail Cairns network. It will also become the only Gondola-accessed mountain bike trail network in Australia - a model based on Queenstown’s Skyline in New Zealand, and Whistler in Canada, the later, of which has shown exponential growth during the Summer MTB season, even surpassing their traditional Winter Ski season revenue. At this stage, Skyrail has given its “in principle support” of the project. C i t y L i f e 77 M a g a z i n e

Leaving a gift in your Will to the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, will help ensure we continue to shine a light on our vision of superior health care in Far North Queensland

THE Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation has received a generous bequest to be used for paediatric oncology. Artist George Wagner bequeathed more than $74,000 to the Foundation, in recognition of the work conducted in the region for children.

Long time friend Mark Lilley described Mr Wagner as a generous man who always felt compassion towards children. “His background is that he was Dutch-Indonesian and spent some of his youth in concentration camps so he had a difficult time himself as a child. I think that’s what made him feel compassionately towards children who were having a hard time,” Mr Lilley said. “Particularly when he was diagnosed with cancer, he felt even more so for children with cancer who might miss out on life,” he said. Mr Wagner studied art and design in Paris, India, Holland and Sydney, and exhibited his works all over the world, including Holland, Cairns, Mexico, Sydney, Yungaburra, Townsville and New York. “I met George when he was my neighbour in Sydney in the 70s – he was an eccentric person and we

became lifelong friends. He actually asked me who I thought he should leave money to and I suggested the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation as I was having treatment at Cairns Hospital and went past the office quite regularly,” Mr Lilley said. Foundation CEO Tony Williamson passed on his gratitude for the bequest, on behalf of patients currently and into the future. “We’re actually seeing an increasing number of bequests come to the Foundation, which is a beautiful way that people can leave a legacy to the community,” Mr Williamson said. “One of the really amazing aspects about the Foundation is that because of our commercial operations, every cent donated to us goes where it’s intended. Nothing that’s donated is used for administration costs at all. I know that’s pretty unique in the charity sector and it’s a really important message for the community to hear,” he said.

“EVERY DONATION WE RECEIVE IS VALUED AND REALLY GOES WHERE IT’S INTENDED.”
