IT'S GOING TO BE AN

AWESOME APRIL! M A R C H M A D N E S S W A S C E R T A I N LY IN THE AIR LAST MONTH - NOT O N LY D E A L I N G W I T H T H E W I L D W E A T H E R A N D U N R E L E N T I N G H E A T, BUT EVEN INCLUDING SOME CRAZY C R O C S T O R I E S A N D A L AT E SEASON CYCLONE!

At Easter, we as a community start venturing out into the background, or patio, to fire up the barbie (after giving it a vigorous scrape) and sit resplendent in the outdoors. Easter invites camping, without the risk of being washed away or eaten alive by enthusiastic insects. And so we begin our annual return into relative normality, so by the end of April we have forgotten how horrid a tropical summer can be, and its finally time for selfies in beachwear to make our far flung friends and rellies as jelly as possible! This month is also special for us with a new beginning, as for the first time we are adding 15,000 copies of this fantastic, independent glossy straight to your door (or letterbox!), and don’t worry if you haven't received one, we are still distributing 10,000 copies through our current network of stands and locations throughout town. For full details of our new delivery areas, and a list of our stands and bulk deliveries, check www.cairnslifemag.com.au/distribution

We are very proud of our magazine and hope that you enjoy it!Wwe try to reflect whats happening in leisure and business in Cairns, but we are small and you are many, so if there is something you would like to see us cover, or a suggestion that would make us better, please email us at info@cairnslifemag.com.au We also welcome our new monthly HomeLife flip, with everything from real estate to home how-to guides. In this month's cover story we meet the forward thinking teams from Northern Property Valuers and Girgenti Lawyers, as they join forces to make a one-stop property service. We showcase the best of businesses that began in Cairns in our Home Grown feature, plus we meet many local faces, new and old, along with our regular panel of experts and what's on in the region. Have a great month, see you out there for Life in Cairns!

LIFE In Your Opinion

“WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO AROUND CAIRNS DURING THE EASTER HOLIDAYS?” KEVIN BYRNE,

CEO, ADVANCE CAIRNS

There are many wonderful opportunities to really enjoy a good break around the Far North at any time of the year but particularly at Easter when you can get away for four days to unwind and relax. Use the occasion to travel and unwind. I normally plan to go somewhere a bit off the beaten track out west or up north - Cooktown, Cobalt Gorge and Mission Beach are places that immediately come to mind. You don’t need to spend an arm and a leg to get there, and it always an easy drive.

LEA MARTIN

PRINCIPAL, ST GERARD’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Easter is a very special time of year for us as not only is it a time for family, it’s also a time of religious significance. On Good Friday we attend a ceremony commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus which is a solemn and sad occasion, followed on Easter Saturday night with the vigil mass of the Resurrection. The stark contrast of the church from a very bland Good Friday to the beautiful white and gold of Easter reminds me that we have hope in the resurrection of Jesus, and this is the centre of our belief as Christians. On Easter Sunday we spend time as a family and in the past we have been to Goomboora Park as a place to meet and let the children have a play and swim. My husband and I also enjoy geocaching, and driving around the countryside looking for caches is a great way to spend the Easter long weekend as well as visiting the beautiful natural sights of Cairns.

TONY MCINNES

FUJI XEROX BUSINESS CENTRE CAIRNS

Easter holidays are always about the kids and family activities. Of course there will be plenty of kid’s Easter egg hunting around the backyard and consequently ample amount of chocolate left over for Dad! Often we find ourselves camping at Easter because it’s the first chance to enjoy some cooler weather. We have been camping at many beautiful places in our region such as Cobbold Gorge, Granite Gorge and every Cairns’ local quick-to-access camping spot Lake Tinaroo during past years. Easter is a good chance to act like a ‘local tourist’ and do all the amazing things around our amazing tropical North Queensland region that we often take for granted. This year, I am especially looking forward to spending some time on Fitzroy Island. Incredibly I am yet to do the walk up to the lookout and explore some of the far side of the island. Throw in a healthy dose of fishing and there you have your perfect Easter break in Tropical North Queensland. CairnsLife 6 Magazine

PLEASE STOP MOANING, I CAN’T HEAR MYSELF WHINGE... D AV I D L E I T H

They tell me it’s tough at the top... well, I have to tell you it’s pretty tough at the bottom as well! And those of my peers who have managed to claw their way to the middle are not in a good mood either. Let me repeat myself, but louder “Stop Moaning”. In the nicest possible way, I can assure you that you’ve never had it so good - hard to believe, I know, but all the evidence points to the fact that the standard of living that most of us are enjoying (or not) now is beyond the wildest dreams of those only a few generations ago. This isn’t just a rant about generation Y not wanting to work, or complaining that us Xers have somehow squandered all the good stuff before they had a chance to get their hands on it. It was tough then, it’s tough now… easy credit slips through the fingers of the unwary, house deposits have atrophied to nothing and but there’s a s**tload more to watch on telly when you can’t afford to go out. When I was a student I would lament my impecuniosities as I supped yet another pint of, admittedly cheap, lager. I would rail against the lack of compassion of my elders. Bastards, I would think, they don’t know how hard it is to survive on a diet of Fosters and doner kebabs. I bet they haven’t felt the icy blasts through inappropriately lightweight (but cool looking) clothing as they struggling the short miles back to a one room apartment. Little did I suspect that their few thoughts of me were limited to contempt, brought on by the plain fact that I could spend virtually an entire day in the union bar. Sheltered from the complete reality of life, work, parenthood, crippling debt and those many other “grown up” daemons as yet unknown to me. I suspected, it had never been this bad - my generation had been abandoned and left to rot, freezing in our Miami vice t-shirt and jacket combos. There is indeed nothing new under the sun. When I left home I moved to the metropolis of London, at that time (with a more consistent regularity than the running of commuter trains), the IRA would deposit explosives across my busy path. Quite literally, not a week would go by without a “bomb scare”, punctuated by the less frequent atrocities of an actual bomb. It was impossible to buy a house; I simply

CairnsLife 8 Magazine

didn’t earn enough, occasionally not even enough to make my meager rent. My friends and I occupied large elderly houses that we sub-divided into dormitories, rent-auctioning rooms based on their size and lack of mildew. This sort of accommodation still exists today, but only in documentaries about drug use or in condemned buildings. It took me nearly fifteen years before I could afford to rent my own place, and even then some of the furniture was dragged from skips. There was no internet - we survived using a network of telephones that you pushed coins into, which ate them like Smarties (the precursor to M&Ms) in exchange for snatches of conversation with distant relatives or cab firms. When you arranged to meet people, you waited if they were late. Simply put, you didn’t know where anyone was unless you could actually see them. Messages were left with whomever answered and pinned to a cork-board behind a communal phone – my message “Where are you bastard - bi-bi-bi-bi-bi (fumble for more coins) - I waited for two hours and you didn’t show”, may never have been read by it’s intended recipient. Information lived in books, or came in more diluted form from the confidently garrulous in local pubs. Late night wagers lasted to the next day as to whether snakes had lungs or how many people can be seated on a Boeing 747. Google was a misspelling of a cricket bowling technique, the internet was for the government and encyclopedias were just too heavy. It seems difficult to conceive what I would do without my smartphone now, but I do know that I survived many years without one and I didn’t die. Everything from air-con to air travel is now affordable, better, and less dangerous. The automation that we were taught to fear has made many secretaries redundant, but has enabled them to get honours degrees online. Robots have replaced us in dangerous or repetitive environments allowing us to watch a staggering average of over 100 hours of useless TV per month! Really, it wasn’t so tough then and it’s certainly not tough now – so stopbloody-moaning and do anything, anything at all and feel privileged and lucky that you can.

BETTING IT ALL ON GROWING WITH THE REGION WORDS BY JANIE BARTON PHOTOS BY MICK FUHRIMANN

Girgenti Lawyers 14B Aplin Street, Cairns City Ph: 4051 3833 www.girgentilawyers.com.au

Since it launched in 2009, Girgenti Lawyers has proven itself to be a firm to watch. Fastforward eight years and the firm continues to go from strength to strength, adding some of the best legal talent in the region to their already impressive ranks. Guided by Director/Solicitor Pietro Girgenti, who was one of the youngest solicitors to open an incorporated legal practice in Queensland, the firm established its presence as one of the fastest-growing law firms in Far North Queensland due to its fresh, cutting-edge and genuine approach. Combining some of today’s newfound and brightest lawyers with genuine old-fashioned personal attention has turned what started as a two-man operation into a thriving indemand law office with impressive team of solicitors, paralegals and support staff. Recently teaming up with Northern Property Valuers’ new buyers’ agency division, a one-stop shop for property buyers, was another progressive step for the practice. Northern Property Valuers’ new initiative combines the expertise of trusted local valuers, with the highly skilled lawyers at Girgenti Lawyers and FNQ Finance Guy to provide the full range of professional services customers need when purchasing property. “We’re really excited about this alliance,” Pietro said. “Working with like-minded companies like Northern Property Valuers is not only providing an excellent service to clients, but is sharing confidence in the region.” Pietro and his team deliver legal services across a majority of legal practice areas

CairnsLife 10 Magazine

including conveyancing, civil litigation, estate planning, business and employment advice, government law and family matters, to name just a few. “We like to think outside the square and are passionate about being results driven,” Pietro said. “We get to know our clients, and in turn their needs, to find the best and most cost-effective way of meeting those needs.” Girgenti Lawyers, with headquarters in Cairns and branches in Mareeba and Brisbane, prides itself on providing clients with the brightest and newest minds in the industry. “Some of our team may be young, but they’re exceptional,” Pietro said. “My approach has always been that it’s not years in the seat, but your ability which dictates whether or not you’re great at what you do. Across the board, our lawyers at every level are some of the best in their fields in their practice areas.” Pietro is excited about the future of Far North Queensland’s economy. “I think Cairns and the region is definitely on the cusp of a boom,” he said. “What we’re seeing now is a fantastic confidence in the region as international, national and local investors return.” Pietro’s future plans are to continue cementing the company’s name as a firstchoice legal firm, as well as being an employer of choice. “Our goal is to continue to develop relationships with the community based on trust and understanding and to remain one of region’s leading law firms,” he said. “We plan to make Girgenti a household name, even if it is a little hard to pronounce!”

ROSS KILMURRAY SPECIAL COUNSEL As the Practice Leader of Girgenti’s Commercial Dispute Resolution team, Ross is the firm’s most experienced lawyer. In fact, he’s one of the most experienced lawyers in North Queensland! He has worked in several Australian jurisdictions and has appeared before Magistrate’s Courts through to the Full Bench of the High Court of Australia. Not only does he practice in all areas of commercial and public law, he is a valued mentor to the Girgenti team. “Girgenti’s is a fast-growing firm,” he said. “We have some very bright young lawyers here. I feel this firm has a lot more to offer.” Ross has returned to Cairns after leaving briefly in 2010. “Cairns has progressed since then and I think it’s getting fired up again,” he said. “It’s just a really vibrant place to live.” rossk@girgentilawyers.com.au

KIRSTIANA WARD SENIOR ASSOCIATE Kirstiana joined Girgenti Lawyers earlier this year and works extensively in property, commercial, employment, marine, and government law, as well as Native Title. “I wanted to be part of the Girgenti team because it’s a vibrant, dynamic and progressive practice,” she said. “Everybody works together towards a common goal – meeting and exceeding our clients’ expectations and servicing them in the most effective and efficient way.” The mother of two, who also volunteers her legal services to the Cancer Council Pro Bono program, worked seven years at another local firm before joining the practice. “Girgenti Lawyers is young, visionary and looking to become the firm of choice,” she said. “I wanted to be part of a practice that wants to be the best in Cairns.” kirstiana@girgentilawyers.com.au

DYLAN CAREY SOLICITOR Dylan joined Girgenti Lawyers in 2015 and quickly established himself as one of the region’s top professionals in Commercial Law, Litigation and Insolvency, while becoming a valuable member of the practice. Dylan, who grew up and spent most of his life in Cairns, represents clients in the Magistrates, District and Supreme Courts of Queensland, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, the Fair Work Commission and Fair Work Ombudsman and the Federal Court of Australia. “Girgenti Lawyers attracts clients because of its new approach,” he said. “When people attend at a law firm they think they’re just going to be dictated to by their lawyer and they won’t really have a say in the way the matter is run, whereas at Girgenti the client is very much involved in the process.”

dylan@girgentilawyers.com.au

ELLA THOMAS SOLICITOR One of the newest members of the Girgenti team is family law solicitor Ella Thomas, a local who graduated from James Cook University. “I really enjoy the way everyone here works together to create the best practice for our clients,” she said. “I love that the firm is small and personal.” Ella, who has been a lawyer for two years, was the Associate to a Judge of the District Court of Queensland and worked with another local firm before joining the Girgenti team. She is also a volunteer solicitor for the Cairns Community Legal Centre. Ella practices in divorce, property settlements, children’s matters, parenting disputes, wills and estate planning. “I want to become an accredited specialist in family law,” she said. “Everyone at Girgenti is supportive of me working towards that, which is fantastic.” ella@girgentilawyers.com.au

THE VALUE OF TEAM WORK WORDS BY JANIE BARTON PHOTOS BY MICK FUHRIMANN

While Northern Property Valuers (NPV) has been a trusted valuation company for 30 years it was after Trevor Gard bought the business five years ago that it grew to become one of the leading residential, commercial and rural property valuation firms in Far North Queensland. What was a two-man operation in a small Mareeba office when Trevor took over at the helm has now grown to include seven staff, another office in Cairns and two new branches opening up – one on the Sunshine Coast and another in PNG. NPV has also started a Property Agency, a new division of the company designed to be a one-stop shop for property buyers. The success of its growth is even more noteworthy, considering it expanded during tough economical times in Far North Queensland.

“There were definitely turbulent times for FNQ businesses over the past five years, but all the people who have been involved with NPV since I bought it and the foundation that previous owner Max Dickenson created has all contributed to our growth,” said Trevor. “Max, who still works with us, is respected among the Mareeba community and guided me during difficult times.” Trevor is a proud Far North Queensland local who is passionate about the region and all his employees are locals. “We are conscious of supporting the local community,” he said. “Our local knowledge and expertise ensures that clients get the best results and service every time. Our money doesn’t go anywhere else except here.”

CairnsLife 12 Magazine

Trevor credits his team with the company’s rise to success. “Bruce joined as a valuer in 2013 and since then we have not looked back,” Trevor said. “Bruce, who became a partner in 2015, has a great work ethic and traditional country values. “Christine Benjamin, who looks after the dayto-day running of the office, is the machine behind the business. Her local knowledge, especially in the Tableland region, and her previous real estate experience has benefited the business immensely.” Family also play a huge part in the business. Hayley Gard, who is a qualified valuer and specialises in commercial valuations, has helped guide the company’s success with her attention to detail in data control and report writing. Trevor’s niece Jemma Jattke, who is studying to become a property valuer, started in 2016. Bruce’s brother Michael is NPV’s latest cadet and is based out of the Mareeba office with Bruce. Also part of the successful team and most recent valuer is Bob McPhail. “Bob’s local knowledge of the property industry and contacts has been a real asset to our Cairns office,” Trevor said. Annette Martin looks after the administration duties in Mareeba, and the team relies on her patience and professional nature. “We have an excellent team who want to come through the office doors every morning,” Trevor said. “We don’t plan to be the largest valuation firm in the region; we just strive to be the best.”

ONE-STOP PROPERTY SHOP WORDS BY JANIE BARTON PHOTOS BY MICK FUHRIMANN

Northern Property Agency 3/30-36 Rutherford Street, Cairns North Ph: 4032 1627 www.npvaluers.com.au

Our new Property “Agency is all about making life easier for clients

Responding to the needs and requests from clients, Northern Property Valuers has opened a new Property Agency division, designed for everyone from business owners and out-of-town buyers to property investors and home buyers. The trusted local company, which has been in North Queensland for 30 years, has teamed up with Girgenti Lawyers and FNQ Finance Guy to offer clients a convenient one-stop shop for clients purchasing property to make the process as seamless as possible for them. “We work together to bring in property, legal and financial expertise for our clients,” NPV owner Trevor Gard said. “We work solely for the buyer.

purchasing for the first time or adding to their property portfolio, to have someone take care of all their buying needs. They cover from Cardwell, Cairns and Tablelands right through to Thursday Island and Cape York. “Our large database of properties include sales and rental evidence of residential, commercial, industrial, retail and rural sites,” said Bruce, who is heading up the new buyers’ division. “Northern Property Agency enables us to offer a full comprehensive service for clients who are purchasing properties.” Trevor said Girgenti Lawyers was his firm of choice when starting MPV’s new division.

“We have a database of thousands of properties all around the region and because we know the market, when a buyer comes to us we’ll find them a property, complete the feasibility study on that property and then approach the owner or selling agent and negotiate the price for our client.

“We have worked with them before,” he said. “Pietro (Girganti Lawyers’ director) and I clicked right away and communicate really well, so he was the first person I thought of when this buyers’ agency came up. We both have offices in Mareeba, Cairns and down south, so the businesses work very well together.”

“Our mortgage broker will look at their financial situation to determine how much they can afford to spend. The solicitors then take care of the conveyancing, contracts and all the legal aspects.”

Through NPV’s affiliation with Owen Waters from FNQ Finance Guy, clients can find out how much they can afford before they start and, if suitable, obtain pre-approved finance so they can be sure that when NPV finds the right property they doesn’t miss out.

The concept of the buyers’ division was born as clients continued to approach MVP when looking to expand their business or find investment properties. Trevor and Mareeba office partner Bruce Coates recognised the need for both local and out-oftown buyers, whether they are

“Our new Property Agency is all about making life easier for clients,” said Trevor. “We give them the knowledge and our expertise so they can make the right, fully informed decision.”

OUR SILENT PROTECTORS WORDS BY JANIE BARTON

You rarely see them, but if you did you wouldn’t be able to recognise them. It’s their job to help the First Response Officers and Investigators keep us safe and secure, yet most people don’t know they exist. They are the highly skilled Cairns Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) of the Queensland Police Service, who are constantly training and working to ensure the community is safe by providing a range of specialist skills that enhance the capability of the QPS. Although unable to divulge the size of the Cairns based unit, SERT operators are called upon for specialised tasks such as counter terrorism response, apprehending high-risk persons and hostage/siege incidents. “The role can be highly demanding,” said a nine-year veteran of the Cairns’ SERT team, who cannot be named for security reasons. “It takes a highly motivated individual to do this job.” The path to becoming a SERT operator is demanding. There is a minimum of two years’ service as a general-duties police officer before applying for the one-day SERT selection process. This testing determines the minimum fitness standard of the applicant and is the gateway to progressing into the more arduous SERT selection phases. “Once you complete the one-day testing and if you’re successful, you’re invited back for a three-day selection process,” said the Cairns operator. “And that is the real grueling part.” The three-day selection course has been continually refined and

enhanced over the 24 years that SERT has existed in a full-time capacity. It tests physical and mental endurance and, most importantly, the attitude to never give up. Sleep deprived along with mental and physical exhaustion, applicants participate in back to back activities that replicate the SERT operational environment. “It’s about team mates and looking after them, rather than thinking about your own discomfort”, said the Cairns operator. If successful, candidates then undergo three months of training where, along with rigorous physical training, they learn a number of specialist skills including marksman training, building search techniques, high-angle roping and a large range of other specialised skills. Applicants learn how to adapt to environments, weather conditions and constantly evolving situations. They endure constant high-stress situations and face phobias, such as claustrophobia and acrophobia. So why do they do it? “Generally, the team has to be very motivated and keen, and those incidents where we help people who are in need are really rewarding,” the Cairns officer said. “At the end of the day, we are part of the QPS and someone has to undertake these particular duties. “That’s why there’s a vigorous selection process to ensure that the operators are ready to take on tough and challenging tasks. They also have to love the team environment because we all look after each other.”

The officers in Cairns SERT are on call to respond to high-risk events at any time and serve the community by providing a high level of expertise which exceeds normal police capabilities. SERT are often called to provide support to police operations during high-risk incidents and are used to contain threats, provide emergency tactical intervention and a safe environment for police negotiators. They are there to support their police colleagues. “We have to be ready to go at all hours whether it is by a plane, helicopter or vehicle,” the Cairns officer said. “It can be tough on partners and families. One minute you are having dinner at home and the next you are on a job and away for a couple of days.” The Cairns unit has been deployed to help with security incidents in major cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin. Dealing with dangerous situations and witnessing tragic events is something that all Police Officers have to deal with. “We have on-call psychologists and councilors available and our partners and families are very understanding and supportive,” the Cairns officer said. “You never know what is around the corner or what you will be doing from one day to the next. That’s just the nature of the job. Luckily, there is really good camaraderie in our unit. We have a great group of guys who all love what they do.”

IRELAND’S, A DRIVING FORCE BEHIND CAIRNS COMMUNITY WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER

|

CairnsLife 16 Magazine

One thing we impress upon our team is that the company is in the business for the long haul

David and Richard Ireland are fifth generation Cairns boys, co-owners of Ireland’s of Cairns, serving the region for 94 years, and now the only new vehicle dealership in Cairns that is owned locally, by true locals. The brothers’ great-great grandmother emigrated to North Queensland in 1888. Their greatgreat-great uncle had been working in the Mitchell, Palmer and Hodgkinson gold fields for some years before that. This makes them fifth generation.

told her round ones,” laughs Richard. I was curious as to what the brothers saw as the most significant change in the business over the years. “Probably the advancement in technology in the vehicles; the speed at which it evolves is very exciting,” says Richard. “When I get to the age where I am not allowed to drive, they’ll have driverless cars, so I’m actually looking forward to it,” laughs David. “How will they actually work?”

Grandfather Francis Ireland came to Cairns in 1905. Originally a bicycle mechanic, he became an advanced motor mechanic, and in 1923, started what has become the iconic Ireland’s of Cairns, selling his first car, a Chrysler Tourer in 1924. That actual car, now restored, sits in the Chrysler dealership showroom.

“Hopefully, very well,” says David. These guys crack me up. “It could either work very well, or be a complete disaster,” he laughs.

“From a very young age, all of us kids were involved in this business, working at weekends and in school holidays. It was never demanded that we work in the business, it just happened,” says David.

“Some investments haven’t been a commercial success for us, but they’ve survived as a solid and worthwhile community asset. The Cairns Taipans is a good example of this.

In those days, the dealership occupied an acre and a half. The present site in Mulgrave Road covers almost eight acres and employs 160 staff, many of whom have been with the company for 10 to 20 years. Some a lot longer. “We have Holden, HSV, Mitsubishi, Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Isuzu Trucks, Alfa Romeo and Fiat. Holden is our biggest seller, but we sell more used cars in total than all the new car brands we sell,” says David. I made the mistake of asking the brothers which of the cars in their yards were their favourites. “Someone asked me a while ago which were my favourite wheels. I

Over the years, the family has invested diversely, including Lizard Island Lodge, Hertz Rent-a-car, Nerada Tea and motel accommodation.

The dealership has been involved in the Taipans since the start, with Richard and father Ron being among the original shareholders, and Richard a director on the first Taipans Board. “Although we eventually lost the money we invested, it brought forward the building of the Cairns Convention Centre in 1998 – by at least ten years, and the Taipans started playing there, giving a kickstart to the economy, bringing more conventions in, and demand for more rental cars, which ultimately benefited us as well,” says Richard. “In the Fifties or Sixties, our grandfather was one of the guarantors for the Cairns Basketball Association

TERRY

James WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER

Growing up amongst mangroves, mud, mosquitoes and sand flies, Cairns Regional Council’s longest serving Councillor only donned shoes once a year for the big family outing to the Cairns Show. They made them tough in those days. Cr Terry James was brought up in Bollard Street in Bungalow where he sold rags to NQEA for 10 shillings for a pound in weight. “There were no bitumen roads then. The industrial area was being developed, using mud dredged from the Inlet. As kids, we had a lot of mud fights, and swam in the Fearnley Street Creek, nicknamed ‘Perfume Creek’, never giving thought to the possibility of being eaten by a croc,” says Terry. “We used to walk across the Indigenous camp behind us and then along creek to school at Parramatta Park in bare feet. We had shoes for the Cairns Show and that was it. “People say “Cairns is so beautiful”, thinking it is all natural, but much of the city’s foundations are man made, built by our forefathers, who had indisputable foresight. Without that foresight, Cairns wouldn’t be what it is today,” Terry adds. Terry’s family has always been in the building industry. His father was a builder, a cabinet maker, beginning his career refurbishing pianos. “He was born in Wolfram, outside Dimbulah. He and his four siblings used to go to school on one horse,

and when they left school, it closed down,” Terry laughs. “The family went to Mt Mulligan, where some of his relatives died in Queensland’s worst mining disaster in 1921. Grandfather survived, only to die at 45 of pneumoconiosis caused by mine dust. “My father came to Cairns, beginning an apprenticeship with cabinet maker and Cairns Council Alderman Ken Foley. There were always pianos down the back shed, for repair. It’s how I ended up playing the piano. “My eldest brother, George James, was an architect, and I worked with him as an apprentice architectural cum structural draftsman. I sat in my office watching the Civic Theatre under construction. Forty years later I’m watching our new, larger theatre rising on the same site. “My career in building design took me to Council meetings regularly for interest’s sake, as an observer. I ended up being the only person in the gallery most of the time, so I acquired significant knowledge of Council’s workings before I became a Councillor. “It was former Mayor Ron Davies who piqued my interest in running for Council; and in the late eighties I ran as a member of his Cairns Civic Association team. We didn’t win, but undeterred, I joined forces with Kevin Byrne and in 1994 we celebrated a win as the newly formed Cairns Unity Team. “Now, Bob (Manning) and I are the only ‘born and breds’ in Council;

it would be a debate as to which of us has the most relations in the Cairns cemetery, but we probably know everyone in there between us anyway,” Terry quips. “My father used to operate a little fishing charter boat named Jessie James, and we were out on the water most weekends. When he retired, he bought a little fishing boat that broke down on it trial run. Fortunately, the Coastguard came and towed us in. I was so impressed I joined, and spent the next 20 years, with the local Chapter of the Australian Volunteer Coastguard, despite suffering from seasickness. There were far more boats out on the weekends in those days,” says Terry. Terry’s father and brother bought and transformed the landmark ‘House on the Hill’, former headquarters of Z Force in the Second World War, where the combined forces planned the counter attack on Singapore. “As a young lad, I helped transform the old building into a popular restaurant and night club. We lived in a little house in front of the restaurant,” says Terry. Working many a night in the restaurant for many years, Terry was exposed to the musical talents of local legends Larry Hammond on organ, and Alan Perkins on the piano, inspiring him to learn and play the piano. These days Terry tickles the ivories infrequently, but harbours a quiet determination to play to his heart’s content once retired.

NORTHERN PRIDE GREG DOWLING W O RDS BY K IM BER LEY VLASIC PHOT OS B Y GOR DON GR E AV E S (C DE C )

THE future of the Northern Pride hangs on the rugby league club finding a permanent base in Cairns. That’s the firm belief of recentlyappointed CEO Greg Dowling, a former professional Australian footballer and successful businessman who has a long association with the Far North Queensland side. “My big goal is to try to find us a home and I’ve got a five-year plan to try to achieve that,” he said. “We need a home first to compete with your bigger clubs, especially in Brisbane like Redcliffe, Wynnum and Easts, which have the big ivory towers. “We have nothing, we don’t even have a playing field. “The first thing I did was go and meet the mayor, Bob Manning, and put my ideas to him and listened to his ideas… because as we sit here overlooking Barlow Park, great football field but that’s our biggest problem,” he said, pointing to the athletics track that encircles the field. “We’re too far away. Sponsors tell me that, supporters tell me that, so therefore we need a home.

We can’t “ keep relying on

sponsorship, especially in a town that’s a tourist destination where your economy is very volatile.

“We don’t have a real big business community… so for us to survive, we need a home.” Greg joined the club in November after a turbulent year for the Pride, which placed eighth in the QRL state competition, the Intrust Super Cup. Sponsors were growing discontent, membership was dwindling, and volunteers and players started to walk out. Greg admits the Pride was in “disarray” when he took the reins. “I think we only had about three contracted players, so where we’ve come from then to now is a huge credit to the club,” he said. “We’ve got a new coach and it takes time for everything to gel.”

The Pride has had a shaky start to the season but Greg is confident the youthful side can make the semi-finals, with the return of Darryn Schonig and Graham Clark and new recruits Will Bugden and Connor Jones bringing fresh energy. “I believe we can still do it, we have the calibre of players at our disposal,” he said. Winning back fans is a priority for the club, which has signed a new caterer, Tropical Catering and Events, and introduced children’s entertainment at game days. Fixtures have also returned to Saturday to create a family atmosphere. “We’re playing 5.30pm on Saturday whereas the last couple of years we’ve played on the Sunday and people voted with their feet, they didn’t approve of the Sunday games,” said Greg. “The biggest thing for us is trying to win back the public’s confidence.” Planning is also underway for a gala dinner in June to celebrate the club’s 10th year in the competition. In the meantime, Greg will continue to fight for a new rectangular stadium in Cairns, a facility he envisages could be shared with other codes and visiting athletes, and one that will cement the Pride’s place in rugby league and Far North Queenslanders’ hearts.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK MAY O R B O B MANNI NG

Last week, I was invited to speak at the Local Government Association of Queensland’s Financial Sustainability Summit held in Cairns on how to attract investment to your city. It made me pause and reflect upon what we have done in the past four or so years to dramatically change the economic landscape and achieve the positive outcomes we are experiencing today, with heightened interest in our city from investors and major private construction projects underway or ready to begin. When I came into office as Mayor in 2012, our region had probably experienced its worst four years ever in terms of the overall state of the local economy. The construction industry had been severely affected; major construction companies previously based in the region had closed their doors; vacancies in retail and commercial premises were at an alltime high; visitor numbers were down; and new investment in the region had waned as confidence continued to slide southwards. It was clear that the great challenge for our new Council was to do whatever we could to restore confidence in order to attract investment and business activity into the area. I am a firm believer that if you get the money right, everything else will follow. So our initial attention was focussed on strengthening Council’s financial position to enable us to positively affect the local economy through public expenditure and investment in community infrastructure. For the past four years, we have proudly presented balanced budgets coupled with very low rises in rates and fees, and reported surpluses in our operating position totalling $21.8 million over those Budget cycles. Achieving a strong financial position and reducing debt has allowed us to heavily invest in our capital works program, delivering some $600 million in infrastructure projects over the past four years. By investing in our city through public infrastructure and improving its liveability and appeal to visitors, we have sparked renewed international

CairnsLife 22 Magazine

investment interest. As a Council, we set a vision, mission and principles that espouse efficiency and a business focus and our staff are well aware of the expectation to reduce red tape wherever possible. We stimulated the construction industry by introducing an incentives program to waive infrastructure charges because when construction is thriving, the economic benefits flow through to nearly every other industry. We also looked at our planning scheme and amended it to allow greater building heights in the CBD and North Cairns and introduced a “tropical urbanism” design theme into the scheme to ensure that developments reflect the tropical character of Cairns. We sent a clear message that we were very much open for business – business that would achieve value for Cairns but not undermine who we were as a city, our character and, of course, our unique natural environment. Our vision was clear – and that was, and remains, very important. We have a distinct character that defines us and how we develop. We know that our tourism industry – the lifeblood of the region – rides on the back of our natural environment, and that it deserves our maximum support. With that in mind, Council moved to significantly boost funds to tourism – from $480,000 when we came into office to $3 million in this year’s Budget – so Cairns could more effectively compete with other destinations that have funding models which provide them with the upper hand when it comes to marketing their cities or regions and securing additional air passenger services. The results of all of these efforts have clearly paid off. All in all, Cairns is on an upward trajectory – we have come a long way in just over four years and we are seeing the fruits of our labour translated into real investment and job creation. Cairns has been successful over the past four years or so in changing the game in our favour and we will continue to strive to ensure the good times keep coming.

CAIRNS DINNER THEATRE WO RDS BY SU Z Y GRINT ER

Great news! The highly acclaimed Cairns Dinner Theatre is coming back, and it’s rockin’. The dawn of New Year saw Cairns Dinner Theatre regretfully close its doors in Lake Street as its lease ended, but every cloud has a silver lining, and the new venue at the Casino more than makes up for the temporary disruption to fun and frivolity. “A call to The Reef Hotel Casino proved very fruitful, and after a month or so of getting the legalities organised and welcoming our first child to the world, we’re working feverishly to refurbish the old Velvet Underground venue. It’s perfect, or will be soon,” says owner Wes Evans. As I walk down the stairs onto a gallery reminiscent of the old theatres of a bygone age, I can almost feel the Phantom of the Opera lurking in the theatre below. It’s magical, the ambience perfect for the purpose, the spell only broken when Wes appears ‘from the wings’, bringing me back to reality.

CairnsLife 26 Magazine

Canadian born Wes has managed theatres and a hotel, and talented wife and business partner Brooke has danced her way around the world on cruise ships. Wes had always harboured the desire to open a dinner theatre. “The combination of tourism and the lack of arts based entertainment, made Cairns ideal. There are one off shows and periodic shows, but nothing operating on a regular basis, four nights every week. So, if you’re going out for dinner and want a little entertainment at the same time, you have it all together here. “In all, we have a huge area of 1200sq.m. now, and can comfortably seat about 130-150. We’ll probably seat a lot more eventually once we start to use the gallery.

“We have our own little theatre group, but we are always looking for new faces, new ideas to bring a bit of variety and to appeal to more people. We do bring in shows from elsewhere, but most shows we produce ourselves. Wednesday is stand up comedy, Thursday is always cabaret, burlesque or similar. Our next Thursday show will be a circus type show, Lucid, which will be fun, a first for us. It’s a cast of about 10 circus performers, dancers and comedians creating a Cirque du Soleil style show with lots of lycra and aerial silks above our guests’ heads. “Fridays and Saturdays are always an interactive show like a Murder Mystery,” says Wes.

“Some shows are accompanied by an a la carte menu and some have a three course meal already included, so it depends on your budget and what show you want to see, but we have something for all tastes. “We open at 6.30pm for a show start at 7pm, ending around 9 – 9.30pm, and our guests are welcome to linger a little for a drink or a dance afterwards.

THE IDEA OF NORTH AUST R AL I A’ S M O ST SUC C ESSF UL C O N T EM PORA RY VO C AL G R O UP T O PL AY TAN KS T H I S M AY

Australian jazz musician James Morrison labelled them “the best contemporary a cappella group in the country”, and for good reason. The Idea of North (TION) is Australia’s best and most successful contemporary vocal group. In just two decades the group have achieved successes that many could only dream of. In 2003 TION won The Harmony Sweepstakes in the USA, one of the largest international open a cappella competitions in the world, and in its (then) twenty-year history, this was the first time that the winner was an ensemble from outside the USA. On top of that, TION have been awarded two ARIAs and are the only a cappella group to have ever received an ARIA.

THE IDEA OF NORTH JAZZ UP NORTH 2017

Made up of four friends who first met in 1993 whilst studying at university, TION’s vocal instrumentation consists of soprano, alto, tenor and bass, with a little bit of vocal percussion thrown in. They have a beautifully distinct sound and style and cross many musical genres including jazz, folk, gospel, pop, classical and comedy. “Anyone who comes to a show of ours is treated to a huge range of music - from sophisticated jazz arrangements with nice crunchy harmonies, through to funky pop re-arrangements and hilarious comedy tunes,” group member and tenor Nick Begbie explains.

FRIDAY 12 MAY

“There’s more than just one thing for everyone.”

Winner of two ARIA awards, contemporary a cappella quartet, The Idea of North (or TION), boast an evoking repertoire steeped in jazz yet easily crossing over into pop, gospel, folk and comedy.

TION are the third act performing at the Tanks Arts Centre as part of the 2017 Jazz Up North music series. Whilst not new to the tropics, this will be the first time the group take to a stage inside a concrete ex- army fuel tank, and the group are more than exited at the prospect.

The only a cappella group to have ever received an ARIA award, TION’s distinctive style and sound has clinched them an enviable reputation both in Australia and overseas, seeing the vocalists perform at major festivals and arenas throughout the world. With twelve albums in their catalogue and a significant local and international fan base, these four friends deliver spectacular music arrangements presenting “truly a sight and sound experience of the highest calibre” (Don Burrows, Australian jazz legend).

The Idea Of North can also be purchased as part of Tanks’ music series.

“We LOVE the idea of performing in a tank!” Begbie says. “Singers, particularly a cappella singers, spend an inordinate amount of time looking for spaces that have amazing acoustics that they might sing in them and bask in the sound bouncing around the space: bathrooms, churches, concrete stairwells.” Each member of the group has studied in some of Australia’s foremost music schools; two of the group at the Elder Conservatorium attached to Adelaide University and two at the Canberra School of Music attached to the Australian National University. With a career only twenty four years young, the success of the group TION can be attributed to their humble beginnings and unique skill sets as university friends who decided to get together between classes and sing. “I think being friends with the people you’re singing with is partially essential - and a big part of the unity of the sound you can create,” Begbie explains. “That’s the thing about a cappella singing: is that it’s such a personal co-op; as a singer it is your very being that is your instrument, so it’s important to live a double life insomuch as you need to stay intrinsically and emotionally connected to your voice to do your job well.” Don’t miss out what will be a truly unique and uplifting evening when The Idea of North play the Tanks Arts Centre on 12 May 2017. The outside area has had a lot of care and attention focussed on it to make it one of the coolest places to eat and drink in the CBD – literally, the coolest, as the renovations have enabled the entire area to be air-conditioned! Every journey begins with a single step, and for the main man at Jackley’s Bakehouse, that step was becoming an apprentice baker at Brumby’s Edmonton as a teenager. For fifteen years he honed his craft and then in 2012, just two weeks before their wedding, Dale and Bec Jackley opened their first store at Raintrees Shopping Village. They realised quickly that they would need to diversify if they were to make a success of the endeavour… this step was a steep learning curve as they taught themselves the art of cake decorating through YouTube videos and lots of trial and error!

Allen has been working with them since a month after they started at Raintrees, and Libby Nelson, another self-taught decorator, joined the team last year.

This was really the beginning for the young couple, as their creative cakes started flying off the shelves and they found themselves inundated with orders. Six months after opening their first store, they signed the lease for a new Jackley’s Bakehouse at Mt Sheridan Plaza.

Last month, they sold the Raintrees store in order to focus their efforts on the Mt Sheridan location and their new online cake business, www.everydaysabirthday.com. au which launches next month, and will allow customers to ‘click-n-buy’ ready-made cakes and cupcakes. Jackley’s Bakehouse is one of Cairns’ local successes and this new enterprise is sure to cement their reputation as the go-to birthday cake business.

To say that the last 5 years have been hectic, is no understatement – their daughter Tia was a toddler when they first started their own business, and her sister Jada was born in 2015! It would have been an impossible task for Bec and Dale to manage everything by themselves, and they understand the importance of team work. They are definitely doing something right as Janet

“We all have a different skillset, which means we are able to do any style of cake,” says Dale, “Drip Cakes are currently all the rage, and we keep an eye on what’s happening overseas so we can bring our customers the latest cake trends.” And it’s not just the outside of the cake that has garnered them praise - the actual cakes themselves are light, fluffy and delicious.

“We get such a lovely sense of satisfaction from our client’s reaction to their cake, it makes all the long hours worthwhile!” adds Bec with a smile. It’s true that every day really is a birthday at Jackley’s Cakehouse, ooops, Bakehouse!

One of the longest-standing and best-loved shops in vibrant Edge Hill is one that is a step ahead of the others – literally. In its 12th year in the same location, Shoetopia continues to be one of the best – if not the best – shoe shops in Cairns. Featuring hundreds of shoes from national and international supplies in a huge range of different colours, designs, sizes and prices, the popular shop is a favourite of those who love fashion and enjoy wearing quality footwear. “We have shoes in just about every colour under the sun,” said owner Kaye Brookes. “People know if they want a certain colour to match their outfit they will find it here.” While Shoetopia stocks the latest styles in footwear, it also has a

comfort range for those who don’t want to wear high heels but still want to look fashionable, and it caters for all budgets with shoes ranging in price from $49 to $325. It also stocks a large range of handbags, clutch bags, jewellery, hats and fascinators to complement any outfit. Like the rest of the Edge Hill community, Kaye is thrilled to have the Collins Avenue bridge repaired and traffic flowing through the suburb again. “Edge Hill has its vibe back,” said Kaye, who also lives in Edge Hill. “The village has everything you need. It has a lovely dress shop, where I go to buy my clothes, wonderful coffee shops, a butcher, restaurants and so many other great businesses. BREATHE CORRECTLY TO BE IN THE MOMENT AND HAVE PEACE THE YOGA SCHOOL

Have you ever attended a yoga class, but were unable to get into a particular pose and decided straight away, “Yoga is not for me”.

my work in landscaping. Knoff Yoga was recommended to me and it worked almost immediately, I’ve never looked back” admits Ross.

What a shame, because yoga changes lives and at The Yoga School, you work with your capabilities, progress at your own rate and benefit immediately. Each class you attend will leave you feeling better mentally and physically than when you arrived.

We see our students experience huge health improvements, physically, emotionally and mentally. We gain balance, strength and flexibility from yoga practice. We see the results first hand, it is so rewarding. The breath work is particularly beneficial to those suffering stress or anxiety.

The Yoga School, started by Master Teachers, Nicky Knoff and James Bryan occupies a large, light and airy space at Piccone’s Village on Pease Street. Combined, Nicky and James have over 72 years’ of practice and teaching experience. Together they developed the Knoff Yoga System, which combines Western Science with Eastern Wisdom. Office Manager and Yoga Teacher Nicola has been doing yoga for over ten years. Sleep deprived, stressed and not coping well after her second child, she was encouraged to attend her first yoga class by a girlfriend.

“I was a mess, but as the class progressed, I felt the stress just dripping off me. Yoga made me feel human and as time went on, I gained many health benefits. I wasn’t so reactive to everything, I slept better, my lower back pain started to disappear. It was everything I needed to take time out as a mother” says Nicola. Fellow teacher Ross started Knoff Yoga because he had a sore back in 2010. “My reason for coming to Knoff Yoga was more physical: tight muscles, mostly through

CairnsLife 52 Magazine

Yoga is a journey, not a destination. No one has gauged the benefits gained by those who do the pose effortlessly, compared with people who are working towards the pose step by step. It is always a work in progress. Everyone gains and everyone benefits. Master Teacher James Bryan recommends all students practice slowly and gently, without strain, adjust every day according to energy levels and have no concern for what we can do or cannot do. It is important to work at our own pace, from the syllabus and with no comparison with our fellow students. Yoga is not a competition. You are unique and Knoff Yoga will help you express your own individuality. Knoff is not about the “perfect pose” but how yoga can improve your health. You do not need to be anything before joining classes: slim, flexible, strong, etc. These are all attributes, which develop over time with class attendance and consistent perfect practice. Everyone is welcome at The Yoga School and the only requirement to starting classes is that you have a body and can breathe.

3MPride

3

MPride is a positive movement initiative for the three ‘M suburbs’ of Cairns West – Manoora, Manunda and Mooroobool - led by Cairns Safer Streets Taskforce (a unique collaboration of government departments) who are working with local Elders to influence local level responses.

BACK, L-R: Charles Misi, Simon Harper, Edward Lampton, Brad Winks. FRONT, L-R: Venessa Curnow, Amy Eden, Semara Jose, Merrissa Jose, Frankie Clive

The ‘M suburbs’ have notoriously received bad press for decades, due to large clusters of social housing and low socio-economic status. Consequently, young people from these suburbs have lacked self-worth, respect and pride about where they live which is believed to be a contributing factor to youth offending. But things are starting to change. 3MPride activities started softly in November last year with four pop-up events where food, fun and physical activities were the vehicle of engagement. We then had Northern Pride’s very own Ty Williams select participants to join an intensive and holistic 3-week program ‘Live 3MPride’ which was facilitated by PCYC, and covered social, emotional and sexual health, skills and drills, music therapy and community consciousness raising. Then there was the 3MPride music clip which was supported by local muso Naomie Wenitong and the crew from The Last Kinnection. The 3MPride momentum continues to capture our hearts, with popular local businesses like Apex Milk Bar proudly flying the M suburbs flag. Through positive engagement with the community it is hoped that young leaders and Elders will be identified and continue the 3MPride movement with their own projects and initiatives.”

To find out more, get involved or support the positive movement, please contact Amy Eden at amy.eden@justice.qld.gov.au or 0472 808 955

Suicide Prevention Talks Drew Brauer

I

have been blessed to be involved with the FIRST EVER Suicide Prevention Talks at one of our local schools with two absolutely amazing ladies, Dulce Bird and Kari McGregor from the Dr Edward Koch Foundation, who are also passionate about suicide prevention. I’m so lucky I can bring my musical background into the program, as music is a really great way to connect with people and break through barriers, especially when you are talking about your feelings and emotions, which can be hard for anyone. The really exciting thing is that we’ve had such good feedback that we are already being approached by other schools in the area. I recently wrote a song for R U OK day to use in a massive TV, Radio and Social Media suicide prevention project that will target all the ‘at risk’ groups around Cairns and put them in contact with help they might need, all within a few minutes. Once funding is sorted, I will get the ball rolling on that. I’m super lucky to have the support of the ‘Drewboy and The Sax Addicts’ band - we are all so different, but we all want to make a difference in this world. We have some awesome charity gigs coming up this year, along with another East Coast Tour, a New Zealand Tour and a new Album!”

Drewboy and The Sax Addicts debut album ‘Growing Down’ is on iTunes, Spotify and Google Play. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook to see what they are up to!

ONCE UPON A TIME EVA G R A BNE R Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88

“Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you make, but about the stories you tell.” – Seth Godin I recently attended an event for small business, and one of the main points was about connecting with your target audience. They encouraged us to ‘tell our story’ as that is what customers and potential customers want to hear. Nowadays with everything being online, the majority of us miss a more personal connection to a business. We prefer to know the history of a business we are working with, their values and who is leading their organisation. As a recruiter, this story is imperative as we need to know the business we are selling to our candidates and at the level we recruit at, we need to know the drivers and aims of the business we are representing: Why do they do what they do? Where do they come from and where they are going? Yes, we all have our ‘mission statement’ and list our ‘values’ but what really do we stand for? What do we believe in? Why are we in business and what drives our passion? For me, Elite Executive was born out of the desire to change the perception of recruitment. There are good and bad sides of recruitment and my goal was to be different, to stand out. To provide a more personalised and focused service, second to none! But how do I convey that to my target market? If done correctly, a small business story has far reaching impact and offers excellent brand building benefits. With hundreds of people out there vying for attention, you have to stand out, be unique and that’s where your story will make a difference. We all love a good story much more than cold hard facts but how do you go about creating a truly impactful brand story? Here are a few tips: • Know your story (and tell it like a story complete with challenges and intrigue) While you may know your story, do you know how to make it stand out? It’s easy to state how your business was formed and what you do but that’s not really telling a story. You need to tell people about what makes you unique, for example how you dealt with risk

and what barriers have you overcome? What lessons have you learnt? This will help shape your brand and help people remember you better. • Be succinct It’s best to leave your audience wanting more, not wondering when you’ll stop talking. Keep it succinct, simple and be honest; don’t ramble! Show your true authentic self. It’s helpful if your story is available across multiple channels where your target audience are: social media, blogs, message platforms, etc. A brief YouTube video of your story can be particularly effective. • Evolve The story doesn’t end there. As your business grows and evolves there are more chapters to be added to your story. Not only will this keep refreshing the same story, but it will keep people updated as to what changes are happening with your service and product offerings. Telling stories are a great way to make an emotional connection with your audience. They will help people to associate with your brand and develop long term relationships with you. This is the power of storytelling.

THE POWER OF PR COMPANY MEDIA POLICY D AN A E J O NE S

It surprises me just how many companies do not have an active media policy or media crisis management plan in place. A media policy should be one of the key components of any business and the time needs to be taken to have one properly drafted. You might say, “but I only run a small business and we don’t speak with the media”; and that’s probably true, but you still need some form of policy in place to deal with the media if and when the time arises. What if you aren’t in the office and the media turn up on your doorstep. How are your staff meant to respond? If you run a small business and can’t afford to have a professional consultant formulate a media policy for you, that doesn’t mean you should throw it in the too hard basket and forget about it.

D anae Jo n es i s P r in c ip a l o f PR & Market i n g f i rm D a n a e J o n e s C onsu l t i n g

A very basic media policy can be put together by you or one of your staff, but ensure that you include the following: • Nominate at least two company spokespeople • Put together a procedure for staff to follow if media enquiries are being fielded • If your business is a franchise or part of a national chain you also need to consider what you can and can’t say to the media without approval. There is a long list of situations and scenarios that need to be addressed in a comprehensive media policy, but if you are attempting to formulate one yourself, the top three points at the very least need to be covered.

CairnsLife 63 Magazine

A media policy is also a very useful tool in the case of a crisis situation. Just think how much more at ease you will feel knowing that your staff are well informed and trained on how to deal with the media and should your staff receive any media enquiries during your absence, you can rest assured that they know the right process to follow to ensure your company profile isn’t damaged in any way. Once a media policy is formulated, staff need to be trained in how to deal with the media, no matter what the situation. They should also be taken through the media policy step by step, so if the situation arises that the media do call your business, your staff will know what to say straight away. I’ve seen it happen time and time again, where a company finds itself attracting media attention, be it positive or negative, and the staff do not know how to deal with the media and are often frightened to talk to them for fear of saying the wrong thing. This lack of training could mean the difference between taking advantage of a positive publicity opportunity or not. A public relations consultant can point you in the right direction when it comes to media policies and crisis management plans, but if you aren’t about to give one a call anytime soon, at least do yourself a favour and have a brief plan in place for your staff to follow. Trust me, it’ll save you a lot of headaches in the long run! e: danae@danaejones.com.au w: www.danaejones.com.au

DIGITAL MARKETING MATTERS MARK D E N N E R T

Mark Den n ert i s t h e Ma n a g in g D irector o f E merg e n t C o n s u ltin g .

The pursuit of security, comfort and control in life are all generally seen as good things to aim for in life. However, when it comes to building a business with impact these very same things can actually be obstacles. Our need for security can hamper risk-taking, our need for comfort can prevent necessary investments today that payback at a later date, and our need for control can actually stifle creativity and entrepreneurial behaviour. I feel really blessed to have known many good business leaders over the years who embody that risk-taking, entrepreneurial drive, creativity and growth mindset required to succeed in business. Late last year our curiosity led us to research and understand better the ways in which local Cairns businesses are embracing digital marketing. Our aim being to take a temperature check of sorts on the local scene in regards to digital marketing assets, and to also highlight those innovative businesses locally who are doing well through use of digital marketing. In October 2016 we commenced assessment of local Cairns region businesses - using a multi-criteria tool we ranked business websites and analysed social media pages. In total, we assessed 173 local businesses spanning tourism, retail, and food & beverage sectors; further analysing a total of 113 businesses that used Facebook for Business. What we found was fascinating and is summarised in our report titled “Digital Marketing Matters” - which is available for download from our website. Here are some of the key findings from our assessment: • 91% of businesses had a functional website - meaning close to 10% either had no website or one with dead / broken links • 64% of businesses had a mobile friendly website - meaning more than a third of businesses don’t! These businesses are missing out on potential valuable customers who use mobile technology to conduct their everyday business • 56% of business websites use online booking or payment gateways - which is significant considering that although online purchasing is now commonplace it is not relevant for every business • 75% of business websites included interactive content - which can improve customer retention and online search ranking

CairnsLife 64 Magazine

• 42% of business websites use either Google Maps or other Geolocation services - allowing customers to locate them easily • 24% of business websites use video content - which is low considering how readily video can be used across many business web and social media platforms • 8% of business websites use multilingual filters or language translation • 66% of business websites incorporate social media share buttons on the site • 31% of businesses are not using any social media for marketing their business • 65% of businesses that use social media are using Facebook for business marketing purposes Overwhelmingly, through this assessment we found that local Cairns businesses are not making the most of what digital marketing has to offer and can get more by using digital in their business! Using our multi-criteria assessment tool we also found that only 10% of local business websites would rank as exceptional, further reinforcing that there is plenty of scope for investment in business digital assets! WORKPLACE MEDIATION NAR D I NE CO L LI E R

Joan (not her real name of course) HATES her job. All was well, until she plucked up the courage to ask for a pay-rise. Her boss was abrupt with her and just said no. She was very embarrassed and upset. She felt she wasn’t well regarded, so since then she has only done the bare minimum her job requires. Joan became more and more unhappy and her misery was apparent to her colleagues and worse, to customers. Her colleagues stopped asking her out for drinks on a Friday night, and to her great distress she has just found out there was an impromptu early knock off with drinks in the boardroom, on a day she was off work sick. She doesn’t think it was spur of the moment, she thinks it was planned because she wasn’t there. She also thinks no one in the office likes her.

The boss, Joel (definitely not his real name) just doesn’t know what to do. He really couldn’t afford to give Joan a pay-rise, he knows he didn’t handle her request very well, but since then she, quite frankly, is a misery to be around. He has tried to talk to her, but she is not very approachable and the last time he tried she burst into tears and took the rest of the day off. He really doesn’t want to sack her, and he is not even sure if he has grounds to, because she does do her job - just without much enthusiasm. She has started to take more and more sickies lately and he wonders if that is grounds for dismissal, although she does always produce a medical certificate. The tension is starting to effect the whole workplace, with staff morale not being as it was. Other staff are starting to call in sick and the growing number

of sick-days is certainly effecting the overall productivity of his business. What can he do? This is based on a true life scenario. It ended up with “Joan” leaving work claiming she had been bullied and had suffered depression as a result and was unable to work. It cost the Employer a lot of lost time and profit, and did effect his reputation and overall business. What could he have done? He did try and talk to Joan. The trouble was, he didn’t handle it all that well (let’s be honest, he probably made it worse) and she in turn couldn’t see the ‘olive branch’ for what it was and thought he was ‘having a go’ at her for taking sick leave. What would have worked better, was an opportunity for both Joel and Joan, to air their grievances to a neutral third party, and then work towards finding a solution. Joel was prepared to (and could have, at the mediation) apologise for the way he handled the request for a pay rise. In turn he could have explained to Joan (which she didn’t know) that on the day she asked for the pay-rise he had just found out he had a big tax debt to pay, and so he wasn’t as receptive as he might have been. It might have taken just that kind of honest conversation, in a controlled environment, to get the working relationship back on track. Don’t let workplace disputes get out of hand. SUCCESSION PLANNING G RAHA M K O CH

Although the baby boomers are increasingly heading towards retirement, I am of the opinion less than 20% of the owners of Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have any formal strategy in place to address their exit from the business.

Are you looking for a gradual or immediate exit? Is the business stable, growing or shrinking? What do you plan to do following your exit from the business?

What’s particularly surprising about this, is that to be successful in business, planning is essential and consequently owners normally approach this as part of the management of their business. They must ensure that the business has sufficient resources ...financial, human and physical.

Apart from preparing the business for sale, one of the most important considerations when selling your business, is tax. Careful planning is required, and if handled correctly, there is the possibility that the business can be sold tax-free. Small Business CGT concessions can substantially reduce, or possibly eliminate, tax payable on the profit from the sale of your business.

So why do business owners have no formal succession plan in place?

Gr aham Ko ch i s Ma n a g in g D ir e c to r of K IB G ro u p w i t h o v e r 4 0 y e a r s e xperi en ce i n t h e f i n a n c ia l p la n n in g a nd in su ran ce i n d u s tr y

Perhaps it’s because they’re focusing so much on the present and running their business, while also addressing the increasing threats which are apparent in modern business. Having a plan is crucial It is vital that to prepare for the successful transition of your business, whichever path you choose, a three to five year period is necessary. Having a suitable succession plan will not only enable you to maximise the selling price, but also minimise the tax on the proceeds. What are the considerations? Do you want the business to continue operating after you leave? How key are you to the business? What is the current value of the business? Do you have children with the desire and capacity to take over?

Getting maximum value

Life after business One of the most important issues involved in the successful transition from the business, is what you will do to ensure that you remain both physically and mentally active. While it might be the end of your business life, it should be the start of a new and exciting period, where you have both the time and money to enjoy the fruits of all your hard work. e: manager@kibgroup.com.au w: www.kibcairns.com.au Disclaimer: This information may not be appropriate for your individual objectives, financial planning situation or needs and you should seek advice from your financial adviser before making any investment decisions. HOW DOES PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY WORK WITH CUSTODY? SU Z A NNE HA D L E Y WRITTE N B Y SY B I L L A F RA N C IS Senior Solicitor Hadley Family Law

Gone are the days when the woman stays at home to look after the kids and the man goes out to work. Gone are the days also when on a relationship breakdown the children automatically (well almost always) remain with the mother and she is awarded ‘full custody’. ‘Custody’, a word which is still commonly used and accepted. Politicians and other people in high profile positons still refer to custody. Parents typically want to discuss on the breakdown of their relationship, who has custody of the children. Yet custody was abolished as a concept in family law in 1996. One of the main reasons for its abolition was to move with the changes in society and to recognize the role played by both parents in their children’s lives. It was also eliminated to help reduce the winner/loser situation which often came about in the old days, following the award of custody to one parent. So what is the position now? Has custody been replaced? Who gets the children? The concept of custody has been replaced in part by that of Parental Responsibility (PR). PR is what gives parents legal status in relation to their children. By law there is a presumption that both parents share parental responsibility but the presumption is rebuttable. In some situations which are rare, one parent can obtain sole PR. The legal definition of PR is that it means all the duties, responsibilities and authority which by law parents have in relation to their children. What this means is that it gives powers, duties and responsibilities to parents (and sometimes nonparents) to make the major decisions in their children’s lives such as those relating to religion, education and medical matters. So when it is time for little Suzie or Johnie to progress onto High School, or they may perhaps need to undergo a medical procedure, their parents must discuss and together choose which is the most appropriate school for them, or surgeon/hospital for the operation. The

CAIRNS FAMILY LAWYERS

resultant outcome is that there is a move towards co-parenting; parents talking to each other about their children. PR also prevents certain action being taken by one parent without the others consent, such as changing a child’s name or moving overseas with the children. So how do I get PR and how do I enforce it? There is no requirement to have a legal document setting out who has PR. Each parent has PR. However it is often of assistance to parents who have separated to obtain a Parenting Order or enter into a Parenting Plan which will set out their duties, obligations and the allocation of PR, and deal with other matters such as living arrangements. Enforcement will depend on the nature of the breach. Sometimes a quick chat, sometimes mediation. If the parents cannot agree or resolve their issues then an application may be made to the Court but such action should be used only as a last resort. So if parents share PR does this mean that they also share the care of their children? The answer to that is, no. It is often the case that the children live with one parent and spent weekend time and holiday time with the other, but PR remains shared. However, the question of living arrangements, whilst closely connected to PR, is an extensive subject worthy of individual discussion at a later date. In summary PR goes some way towards equaling the roles of responsibility between parents and maintaining both parents active involvement in their children lives. In cases where daily care is not shared it provides some recognition for the major and important role played by the ‘absent’ parent. This article is not intended to contain legal advice. OFFICE DESIGN

MILLENNIALS WHAT THEY WANT IN OFFICE DESIGN AND CULTURE

Does this description sound like your current office? Cubicles as far as the eye can see, gray carpet on the floor and covering the cubicle walls, a few corner offices, beige-colored walls, fluorescent lighting. If the answer is "yes," you’re in need of an office redesign, one that encourages collaboration rather than isolation. Millennials are the ones leading teams and contributing creative ideas that take their companies above their competitors, so you probably want them on your payroll. But in order to attract and retain a millennial workforce – the innovative employees your company is in need of – you have to understand what they want in terms of office design and culture. And then you have to create that combination. Two of the top factors millennials look for in a potential employer are office environment and work culture. If you want to provide an environment and culture that motivates your potential millennial employees, here’s what you need to do.

1. Empower Collaboration With an Open Office

Closed-up cubes and corner offices prevent collaboration and the flow of information, and millennials like working with, sharing ideas and learning from others. This generation believes a collaborative office culture is the key to innovation. Break away from the traditional office layout and invest in a more open floor plan. Get rid of those private offices to eliminate creative barriers. While you’re at it, bring in furniture that accommodates a variety of work styles: adjustable-height desks, so employees don't have to sit all day; and maybe a few yoga balls to replace traditional office chairs. Freestanding dividers like bookshelves or even plant "walls" can be beneficial to your introverted employees who might struggle to focus

in a completely open work area. Be sure there are plenty of conference rooms of varying sizes in your more open office. Although an open layout helps promote collaboration amongst employees, it also means that an employee's individual workspace is no longer a good place to hold private meetings or videoconferences with coworkers or business partners who are remotely located. Make sure you have a break room and/or lounge room. Millennials feel comfortable in communal areas, where they’re more relaxed to build relationships with their coworkers as well as brainstorm new work ideas.

2. Embrace Technology

Millennials like their own way of doing things. They want freedom of choice and devices that make their work life easier and better. So besides an open layout and adjustable furniture that allows for more flexibility, adopt the latest technology. Millennials have a mobile and tech-forward mindset, which means they're comfortable with – and have come to expect – convenient tools such as digital conference room displays for meeting room scheduling. These tools can work on tablets – which over 50% of young adults own – making it easy for employees to search for and book meeting rooms that fit their needs. Embracing the technology that millennials already own and use is a surefire way to better attract and maintain happy millennial employees. And a more efficient digital workspace benefits workers from any generation.

Making change can attract younger workers, giving your company an edge.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT AT SKYTRANS WORDS BY JANIE BARTON PHOTO BY PHOTOHOLICSTUDIO

Skytrans Airlines 11 Bush Pilots Avenue, Aeroglen Ph: 4046 2421 www.skytrans.com.au

Little did Michael Thinee know that growing up and working in Papua New Guinea would one day help him have a positive impact on remote communities throughout Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands. The Chief Executive Officer of Skytrans, who has 30 years’ experience in the aviation and transport logistics industry, is not only an expert in overseeing the company, he’s also passionate about ensuring necessary services reach rural communities. “I lived and worked in PNG where some communities could only be accessed by air,” he said. “That’s what happens in Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands during the monsoon season when communities are completely isolated, and Skytrans helps provide them with access to much-needed essential services.” Bringing in produce and goods is just one aspect of how the airline helps small regions. They also fly in health-care workers, educators, business people and social service workers, among others. “Helping these communities appeals to me the most, and that’s the culture here at Skytrans,” Michael said. “We look after those who don’t have the conveniences we have.” The Barnard family founded Skytrans in 1990. The Wild family took over 15 years later and operated the airline through until early 2015 when Peter Collings, who also owns West Wing Aviation, and Townsville’s North Queensland Cowboys’ Captain Johnathan Thurston purchased it. Michael worked for Skytrans from 2007 to 2013, then returned in 2015. “When we kicked off in March 2015 we had 31 staff, and we now have 143,” Michael

said. “We’re proud that it’s grown quite exponentially and that we’re providing local jobs.” Its fleet of 17 aircraft operates more than 150 flights Monday to Friday. The company’s headquarters is in Cairns with regional offices in Townsville, Horn Island and Brisbane. Michael, Peter, Johnathan and former Cowboy Matthew Bowen, who is Skytrans’ Community Ambassador, visit communities frequently. The two football stars promote better health and education awareness while Michael and Peter work strategically with community leaders to improve the airline’s services. “It’s incredibly rewarding when you go into community,” Michael said. “We enjoy that, and it’s great when you talk to everyone, hear their wants and needs and work to accommodate that where possible.” The company’s involvement goes beyond business. It spent more than $900,000 since 2015, contributing back to communities as well as sponsoring a variety of clubs and organisations including the Cairns Taipans, Cairns Marlins and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, to name a few. The airline’s presence in remote areas also offers employment opportunities for residents. Michael attributes the company’s success to its people. “Our staff are really great,” he said. “They genuinely care and have even initiated charitable fundraising ideas themselves to help with little things, like supplying sports jerseys to community teams. “At the end of the day, what we care about most is the people in these communities. That’s where our main interests lie.”

ALLARO HOMES WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER P H O T O B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H

Imagine being able to walk around your new home before it’s even built. Ground breaking 3D technology, developed locally, is about to make that a reality. In its attractive Aumuller Street office, Allaro Homes has cleared a space specifically for the use of this patented innovation. With a pair of 3D goggles in place, clients are transported into their new home, before the building pad has even been prepared. “Generally, we’ve sat down with the client and taken a design brief, had a look at their site information, and once they’re design ready, their brief is passed to a designer. When the building plan is to hand, we walk the client around their home in 3D.

“People get very confused looking at floor plans, and tend to focus on figures and numbers. They get a thought in their mind of how many square metres they need to live comfortably, perhaps because someone has told them that, but we tend to think that maybe they just need a well designed house. “What we can do now is put clients into their ‘built’ house for a sneak preview,” says Troy Cavallaro. I don the goggles and give it a go. What I’m seeing is exactly what my house would look like built, and to scale. With a control in my hand I can teleport myself into any part of my house, up the stairs, out onto the verandah, into the kitchen, the bedrooms. After backing myself into a couple of corners initially, I quickly got the hang of it. This amazing initiative has revolutionised home design.

CairnsLife 75 Magazine

The Cavallaro family has been building in Cairns for around 120 years, and Troy is fourth or fifth generation in the business. “We always try to do something different. We were the first to use the 3D model for our clients. To be able to step into that 3D model now is an achievement we’re proud of,” says Troy. Allaro Homes has also created an allencompassing building project software program inhouse, which allows it to price and quote on a building project quickly and accurately. It connects with all suppliers, accumulates quotes on the various materials and recognises discrepancies a rushed builder may fail to pick up. “We can sit with our client and go through every single detail to see where their money is being spent, and tweak accordingly to fit their budget. Each change adjusts both the individual item and the total automatically. “The program is also a highly efficient project manager - our supervisors all use the software,” says Troy. Allaro’s client service specialist meets with prospective clients to ensure they are happy to spend time achieving the perfect home. “We start with a blank piece of paper and take in all considerations, sun direction, block shape, wind direction. “We have invested a lot of time and work into creating this technology, and we want our client to invest time. We see this as due diligence. After all, house building is a huge investment, and we won’t settle for anything except a perfect match to the client’s dream home,” says Troy.

NQPS SECURITY PROTECTING NORTH QUEENSLAND WORDS BY JANIE BARTON P H O T O B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H

NQPS 17-19 Winkworth Street, Bungalow Ph: 4041 0288 www.fnss.com.au

While it has undergone a few name changes over the years, NQPS Security has developed into one of the most successful homegrown businesses in Cairns since it started more than 30 years ago and has become one of the city’s largest employers of locals. The highly-respected security firm started in the late 1970s and now includes more than 70 employees throughout its North Queensland centres. “We first started out as FNSS Guards and Patrols, then we bought NQ Protective services and then evolved into NQPS and has been operational under that banner for five years now,” co-owner and managing director Barry Park said. “We employ 73 staff at the moment, who all are locals. We cover Cairns, Tully, Innisfail, Mossman, Port Douglas and the Tablelands, and while our footprint is getting bigger and bigger we continue to employ locals. We’re a local company that believes in hiring locals.” Its list of security services are extensive and includes static guard services with qualified security guards who protect property, people, events and businesses. It also offers security patrols, cash transport/banking services, resort security and alarm services including response, monitoring, and installation with partners Cairns Security Monitoring. “All security services that we provide are supervised by senior staff with longstanding field experience who have served North Queensland since 1974,” Barry said. “We have hundreds of years of experience with the staff who work for us.”

Among its bigger clients are the Cairns Convention Centre and the Cairns Port Authority, which includes providing security for the cruise ships coming to the city. It also subcontracts for approximately 28 other security companies from around Australia, including some of the country’s leading security firms such as MSS Security, SNP Security, SecureCorp and Wilson Security. “They are four of the biggest security firms in Australia that utilise our services,” Barry said. “And those four companies were all successful with the security tender for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which includes two basketball games in Cairns. “We have been asked to supply up to 200 security officers for those games, which covers 24-hour security for personnel, accommodation, the Cairns Convention Centre and the Aumuller Street basketball courts where players will be utilising the practice courts there.” “Recruiting starts in the next month because the security personnel all have to be vetted and accredited by December.” NQPS partners with Specialised Career Solutions to ensure staff remain highly skilled and receive ongoing training in the latest technological security services. Barry said there is one key element to the company’s success. “We wouldn’t be successful without our dedicated staff,” he said. “We have a great bunch of local people who have formed a great company with us.”

THE STONE BENCHTOP SPECIALISTS WORDS AND PHOTOS BY JESSE SHORT

Everest Stone deal in quality stone bench tops with high durability. If you are searching for a professional marble, granite or engineered reconstituted stone finish that lasts, they create and deliver a product that can make all the difference to your property when it comes to choosing the right easy-to-maintain aesthetic look. They cater to all aspects of the industry, including individual installations that suit families, to much larger scale projects. “One of the biggest projects we worked on was 480 apartments in another state,” says Ray Lamari, owner and operator of Everest Stone. “We can do anything from large apartment buildings, right down to a small vanity as part of a bathroom renovation.”

Ray has worked in the building industry all his life and successfully took over Everest Stone in 2012. Besides his own experience, he points out that, “We’re renowned for having qualified stone masons and we pride ourselves on doing a lot of natural stone work. Our success is also due to the showroom sales team who I’m confident share the enthusiasm and passion I have for customers and projects as well as the knowledge of the industry.” “Due to the long-lasting quality of our work, such as the granite and marble benchtops, we unfortunately only see our retail clients twice a lifetime,” Ray details. Yet this is one of the attributes of the timeless and elegant quality and presentation of the stone.

CairnsLife 77 Magazine

As for Ray’s business philosophy, he says, “I believe in three key elements when it comes to business: service, service, service. We pride ourselves on it, we actually believe it and live it.” “They say you can’t have the best quality, the best price and you can’t have everything, but at the end of the day I believe that if you provide a good service, you can have the other things. If you are about servicing people, then people want to talk to you and as long as people feel comfortable with you, they want to come back because they feel good and safe about you and your team.” “I’m a huge believer in if people don’t believe what I’m telling them or selling them, then you can’t have a successful business. So I’m grateful for the relationships I have made business-wise because that has been what has seen us through,” a poignant point Ray makes about what has been instrumental to the continued success of their operations. “Also, having that networking background that has enabled me to call on past clients, and Cairns being the family that it is has helped us to grow.” Ray considers himself to be very blessed and fortunate. “All the hard work, commitment, dedication and service that I have built my businesses on has actually come back to benefit us and is the reason we are still here.” “People think that stone is too expensive and unaffordable. What we’re suggesting is: you are welcome to come along and try us out and compare the pricing.”

KW AUTO REPAIRS & SERVICE

Excellence in car service and repairs.

108 Spence St Cairns Ph: 07 4051 0312 www.kwautorepairs.com.au

To keep your car running at optimum performance, there is one auto dealership in town that goes the extra mile. KW Auto Repairs has been established in Cairns for 25 years and are the go-to people who service all vehicles of every model and make. Since its inception in the early 90s, when it was initially set up by Keith Wone, the car repair business has continued to serve Cairns locals for all their mechanical needs. Current business owners, Dave and Loralie Ware, took over the Repco affiliated enterprise and have developed a reputation that is centred on customers. “We are very attentive,” Dave says. Sometimes the difference their car service provides is in the little things such as taking time for that personal touch such as washing the car and blackening the tires. “At the end of the day, if that’s what makes a difference to that customer, walking away thinking positive about what we’ve just done, then we’ll do it. It’s all about enhancing their experience.” “We want to make sure quality is adhered to and procedures are adhered to and that everything’s done properly. I’ve been in the game around Cairns for 20 odd years or longer and I’ve seen some good management sense. You take the best principles of what you’ve learnt and apply your own demeanour to it. From there you give it everything you got and the point is you’ve got to make sure you’re doing it best than most. That’s the big difference between us and everyone else. That and our attention to detail.” They are also about providing a visible experience for people. “We’re very informative about what we’ve done. Most

of the time when you get your car back from servicing you’ve paid this money and you don’t know what’s been done.” KW Auto is committed to not only providing a great service, but take the time to educate and explain the problems customers may face, breaking down jargon and shop-talk using photos and visual aids so that they can show what has been fixed or replaced. “When everything’s explained, the parts are shown, they take a look at the photos, they have an understanding of what they’ve spent their money on.” Dave explains that they stay ahead of the game by using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and equipment, up-todate repair methods and have invested in a refurbished workshop with mechanics who have the experience and the know how. It becomes clear that the team at KW Auto are spot on when it comes to brake and alignment check, regular car servicing, recommendations, sourcing parts, keeping your vehicle compliant with the Department of Transport roadworthy specs, and just ensuring that everything is working efficiently. “We work in way that is positive experience, long term gain,” Dave says, “and I stand by what I do and how I do it. Part of that is engaging with the customer’s on that personal level. We recognise faces and we recognise families and we harness that. We want our name to stand for quality and assurance.” For a family-orientated, locally based car service, come in or call the professionals. KW Autos are located close to the city, one minute from Cairns Central.

Longstanding companies that have garnered reputable business operations in Cairns are the backbone of the city. Norship Marine is one such business that has enjoyed a longstanding support of local industries in the FNQ , Cairns Marine Precinct and the broader Cairns Community. Norship Marine, first established in 1984 by the Fry family, is a privately-owned company that operates 3 shipyards and an Engine & Driveline remanufacturing facility. They draw on its NQEA heritage that has been founded on its involvement with NQEA and NERCO machining and production workshops, who are world renown for their engineering, ship building and repairs. “Our company is Australia’s pre-eminent Patrol Boat shipyard which has conducted in excess of 100 patrol boat dockings since 2005.” The company created by the Fry family has been built to service the growing needs of the Eastern and Gulf prawn trawler fleets and the Barrier Reef Tour vessels. Last month International Hearing Awareness Week was held and the World Health Organisation (WHO) once again urged people, Medical Practitioners and Allied Health Professionals to encourage anyone over the age of 50 to have an annual hearing check as it is our most neglected sense and if there is hearing loss to seek assistance. It is one of the surest ways to improve the quality of an individual’s life and that of their loved ones. Loss of hearing negatively impacts on those trying to communicate with the hearing impaired as much as it impacts on the individual affected. Essentially, effective communication is impaired. Obtaining help enables those communication pathways to reopen, to be effective and enjoyment to begin. People can relax more and devote more resources and concentration to other activities. Science demonstrates using fMRI scans that the neural pathways of the individual are strengthened when they use hearing devices and begin to use those pathways again. The longer hearing is neglected the more a person starts to withdraw and eventually isolates themselves from social situations which become just too hard to participate in. Anxiety and depression can creep in and cognition go into decline. This can be reversed when amplification is introduced bringing back those forgotten sounds and enabling re-connection to conversation, participation in the rich glow of life restored. Consider how loss of hearing would impact on an individual. There is a dis-connection from life, from basic safety (where is that sound coming from?) to conversations mis-heard, mis-interpreted, to the loss of the rich and pleasurable sounds of music, children’s laughter, whispered secrets, shared moments. The greatest barrier to hearing loss is not being aware of the expertise available and the extent of the products that are available to assist, explains Joanna Magee, director of

the family practice AUDiOHEALTH. With solutions that do not advertise hearing loss, discreet and invisible to the on-looker there is so much available to help. People are amazed at the technology that can assist them in hearing their world. Once fitted with these devices the most common comment is “why didn’t I do this sooner”? We are very blessed in what we do, explains Joanna, in that we consult with clients in a poor state of hearing health and work with them to restore their connections to life again. We experience wonderful transformations on a daily basis. Being a third generation in hearing healthcare we consider our work a vocation and enjoy sourcing the best products for our clients and at very affordable prices. Interest free payment plans and government assistance means that hearing help is within the reach of everyone in Australia unlike other countries. Working with the Starkey Foundation fitting over 600 children in Indonesia who had no ability to afford modern hearing devices was a revelation. We are so privileged in Australia to be able to access great technology. From tiny invisible devices that work automatically, to those that communicate directly with smart mobile telephones to the latest devices that are rechargeable, environmentally friendly and easier than ever to use. No more battery changing or fiddling. Hearing loss is more conspicuous than today’s tiny devices. The trial of the latest hearing device so tiny and deeply seated in the ear canal no one can see it is available until the end of June. So do yourself, family, friends and colleagues a favour and come in and hear the difference for yourself. You’ve nothing to lose but your hearing loss and a whole new world of hearing to gain. Call AUDiOHEALTH on 4041 7860 to arrange an obligation free appointment.

THE TAP LEAKS, YOU GET A PLUMBER. YOU LEAK AND… YOU NEED A UROLOGIST Incontinence is defined as the inability to control the bladder or bowel. It occurs for many reasons at many ages. Stress urinary incontinence occurs with sudden increases in abdominal pressure such as cough, laugh, sneeze, exercise or even during sex! Incontinence is more common in females than males and this is for obvious reasons. The sphincter muscle that controls the bladder is not as strong, the bladder may have a tendency to “drop down” and there may be damage to the pelvic floor in childbirth. Urge incontinence is when a person is unable to suppress the need to pass urine and there is leakage before getting to the toilet. Sometimes the whole bladder may empty. There can be many reasons for this. There can be infection present, sensitivity to caffeine or alcohol, some medications cause it, occasionally a small capacity bladder may develop, diabetes affects it and sometimes a person may have arthritis which prevents getting there quickly. Some people develop a combination of both urge and stress incontinence. The diagnosis of incontinence is usually made on the patient’s history (description) of how and when it occurs. A urine test is usually carried out and an ultrasound or X-ray may be required. It may be necessary to have a bladder examination (cystoscopy) carried out. It is disappointing to read, hear and see that in a number of media areas that the answer to this is to wear pads when many can be cured or significantly helped by correct treatment. Consuming approximately two litres of water per day will assist with “flushing the system”.

Maintaining a healthy body weight is important as the pressure of abdominal fat on a bladder will reduce its ability to fill and hold urine. Reducing caffeine containing drinks and alcohol may be helpful as well as maintaining a healthy, regular bowel habit. Pelvic floor exercises and timed toileting (holding on for a few minutes when the urge starts) can be assisted by physiotherapy. Sometimes medications may be prescribed to reduce the “irritability” of the bladder and finally, surgery may be required. That may take the form of a “repair” where the bladder is lifted back to the correct position and fixed in place or a “sling” is inserted at the bladder opening to create a “kink” to stop leakage with the cough or sneeze. Alternatively, a substance can be injected at the opening of the bladder rather like putting a new washer in a tap. This is like making a person’s lips larger in cosmetic application. This type of procedure is done as a day surgery case and there are no cuts made.

Incontinence

• Incontinence is more common in females than males and this is for obvious reasons. • Urge incontinence is when a person is unable to suppress the need to pass urine and there is leakage before getting to the toilet. • The diagnosis of incontinence is usually made on the patient’s history (description) of how and when it occurs.

PHYSIOTHERAPIST DRIVEN HOLISTIC HEALTH CARE SU Z A N N E RAT H BSc. (HONS) Physio MSc. Sport and Exercise Medicine. Craniosacral therapist.

When Wellness Embodied founder Suzanne Rath was hit by a car when cycling in Sydney over three years ago, she never imagined it would eventually lead to her starting a new life and business in Cairns.

quickly and easily with my toolbox of physiotherapy techniques. But for those people who’ve been living with severe pain for a long time, I like to think I can offer that little bit of extra care, like the icing on the cake really.”

The physiotherapist and Pilates instructor was working three jobs in Sydney and training for the upcoming Boston Marathon, however multiple fractures in her jaw saw her sidelined from work and training for several months, with pain and anxiety which lasted for far longer.

Almost eleven years after graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, Suzanne most recently worked in private practice in Katherine, NT. There, she was sole practitioner in a busy clinic and had a varied role which included working in Indigenous communities, providing home assessments and treating patients in clinic. She is excited to have made the move to Cairns and opened her own practice in March this year.

“I was getting constant headaches. I’d go to doctors, for physiotherapy. I did (and still do) lots of medical acupuncture on myself for pain and that was also when I first tried craniosacral therapy. I think I was really hard on myself because I thought, ‘You’re a physio, you should be making yourself better quickly’. But I was exhausted,” she says. Suzanne also held a Masters in Sport and Exercise Medicine and had worked with clients from elite athletes to those who’d suffered strokes. However it was towards her training in chronic pain that she began to gravitate. These teachings go beyond the reach of standard physiotherapy treatments like manual therapy and rehabilitation exercises, acknowledging the effects of stress and environment on bodily function and pain. “As physiotherapists we’re in a great situation, as we spend a lot of time with our patients and they often open up to us during a treatment. Many of my patients have been encouraged to go back to their GP for different medications, or organise a mental health plan to see a psychologist, after seeing me. If they come in with ‘just’ a sprained ankle or a sore knee, I’m confident I can give them a diagnosis, some relief and the right advice

ADVANCED DELIVERY IN HEALTH CARE WORDS BY JANIE BARTON P H O T O B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H

Having general practitioners, nurses, medical specialists and a range of health care professionals together under one roof is a dream come true for patients seeking medical help or advice. That’s why Balance! Edmonton Family Practice is preferred among residents in the city’s southern corridor who love that fact that it’s a one-stop shop for all their health needs. The GP Super Clinic has five doctors who have a vast range of knowledge and expertise in men’s women’s and children’s health and in chronic disease management and preventative care.

Balance! Edmonton Family Practice Balance! Edmonton Family Practice 5 Walker Road, Edmonton Ph: 4055 4400 www.balancehealthclinic.com.au/edmonton

The practice’s huge ranges of allied health specialists include a speech pathologist for children and adults, podiatrist, mental health nurse, clinical psychologist, diabetes educator, dietician, physiotherapist and an indigenous health care worker. Also on site are Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology and Rural Medical Imaging, which make life even easier for patients. Anyone who has broken a bone and experienced the time it takes to visit their doctor, then go elsewhere to get an x-ray, then return to their doctor for treatment knows how frustrating it can be. At the Edmonton family practice, patients don’t have to suffer through long waits and travel time to receive treatment. “Our patients can have their blood tests and any other pathology they need done here as well has having a CT scan, x-ray or ultrasound if needed,” said centre manager Anna Stuy. “It’s brilliant because we have

everything here, which saves patients a lot of time.” Both Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology and Rural Medial Imaging accept referrals from other doctors, not just those at the Edmonton practice, although having a GP from there means their doctor can see the results straight away and patients don’t have to wait long for medical treatment. The practice also offers children’s immunisations, general health checks, health assessments, mental health care plans, glucose tolerance tests for pregnant women and driver and employment medicals, among other services. “We try and cover as many things as we can,” said Anna. “We want to provide as many services to the community as we can. We try and make it a one-stop shop for them.” To add to patient’s convenience, the practice is open seven days a week – 8am to 8pm Monday and Tuesday, 8am to 6pm Wednesday to Friday and 9am to 3pm both Saturday and Sunday. Patients also enjoy the convenience of having Calanna Pharmacy close by, so they can get any prescriptions required filled right away. While the family practice has every service patients need to get back on the road to good health, it also focuses on preventative care. “We’re all about a holistic health approach to health,” Anna said. “We don’t want to just fix patients’ problems, we want to help them have a complete healthy lifestyle.”

When you think about orthopaedic specialists – you mostly think about bone surgery. Definitely not in this doctor’s case. Doctor David Shepherd is passionately dedicated to spotlighting his professional and caring attention on all facets of a patient’s story, hopefully leading to a diagnosis that requires other possible treatment options. With over 22 years devoted to the better health and management of many patients’ musculoskeletal systems, he has wide-ranging experience dealing with bone injuries, disorders and diseases. His private practice in Flecker House provides comprehensive orthopaedic advice for diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of all areas of the body other than the cervical spine. “I like patients to know what to expect when they see me for a consultation”, says Dr Shepherd. He believes in the importance of considering all contributing factors to the patient’s problem, as well as all previous investigations, during the initial consultation. “I thoroughly examine their specific concerns and any X-ray images, as well as all of their interpersonal aspects” explains Dr Shepherd. With considerate focus on the problem and the issues its causing his patient in their daily lives, he is able to assess and make a definitive diagnosis. “I then honestly discuss what rehabilitative options there are for their best future. We discuss their expected outcomes and ways of restructuring lifestyle activities for the management of any discomfort.” An MRI or other tests may be required to gain a better picture.

CairnsLife 97 Magazine

If there is too much wear and tear in the joint region and the patient is extremely limited with their movement and their daily activities, operative procedures might be the best option. Dr Shepherd is renowned for providing valuable long term care to all his patients with low complication rates. “If the patient is able to avoid surgery and maximize their existing functions in new and different ways and improve their well-being with the use of anti-inflammatories and physio, this would be the best outcome” explains Dr Shepherd. Most clients are relieved if surgery isn’t their best current option and comfortable to make relevant positive changes towards their rehabilitation. Other clients may struggle with significant lifestyle changes that might be required for the best long term results and to sustain a healthy functioning body. Dr Shepherd is much attuned to these issues and provides much caring and understanding support and advice. “It’s all about maintenance of the machinery” reiterates Dr Shepherd. He has been on this journey himself and has much empathy and understanding. After many years of not caring so much for his ‘machine’ David has joined the cycling gang and improved his strength, energy and social life. His wife and his dog are happy to get to spend more valuable healthy leisure time with him. Caring for the skeleton – the framework of our bodies – is imperative and with early detection and specialized support from Dr David Shepherd, patients with deteriorated bone issues will gain many long term rewards.

AT YOUR CERVIX DR ELIZABETH JACKSON WORDS BY JANIE BARTON

Making women’s health care more affordable and accessible is a passion of Dr Elizabeth Jackson and her specialised team, which is why they’ve just launched two new services designed to make health care easier for women in Cairns and the district. The first new service benefits uninsured women with pre-cancer changes to their cervix, a common gynaecological condition. Dr Jackson now performs LLETZ (large loop excision of transformation zone) procedure, which is treatment for abnormal cervix, under local anesthetic at the Cairns Central Day Hospital. This means patients don’t have a long waiting time and enjoy a significant savings. “Uninsured patients tend to have higher expenses for day hospital fees, but we’ve negotiated with Cairns Central Day Surgery to help us make this an affordable choice,” Dr Jackson said. “It’s also so much more accessible for patients. “It’s frustrating for us to see uninsured women who need the procedure waiting many months for treatment. We’re seeing an increasing number of patients with abnormal Pap smears, and it can be very distressing for them to wait, so we want to make this more affordable for them so they can get treatment much sooner.” Dr Jackson, who is a well-respected gynaecologist and obstetrician, said the procedure is comfortable, takes about 15 minutes and is performed in very safe conditions at the Cairns Central Day Surgery. “The patient is not in the hospital very long at all,” she said. “They can have the procedure done in an afternoon, and they don’t require to be fasted or have another person drive them to and from the hospital.” The second new service Dr Jackson is launching is a Nurse Review, which includes a woman’s check-up including contraception

CairnsLife 99 Magazine

review and Pap smears with gynaecological nurse Jodi for just $50 without the need of a doctor’s referral. Women can just call Dr Jackson’s office and make an appointment. “Jodi and I are working together to ensure the high-quality of gynaecological services are easily available and affordable,” Dr Jackson said. Australia’s Pap smear screen program is undergoing a major change in the next few months, and Dr Jackson and her team are already aligned with the upcoming change. Pap smears will now include screening for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). “HPV has been identified to be the main cause of cervical cancer,” Dr Jackson said. “We’ve been screening our patients for HPV with their routine Pap smears for over a year now so our patients can easily transition into the new screening program and adopt the guidelines,” she said. Dr Jackson is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and trained in specialist centres Queensland and South Australia after graduating from medical school in Victoria. Her practice is at Wallamurra Towers on Abbott Street, and she has admitting privileges at the Cairns Private Hospital, the Cairns Day Surgery and the Cairns Hospital, She also has private specialist outreach clinics in Mareeba and Atherton, with appointments able to be made through the Cairns office.

EDUCATION FOR ALL CAT H O L I C E D U CAT I O N SER V I C E S – S TUDE NT SER V I C E S WORDS BY JANIE BAR TON PHOTO BY SILVIA MOGOROVICH

Every student, no matter what ability or disability they may have, deserves the best support they can get throughout their education, which is why Cairns Catholic schools have dedicated student support services. All Catholic schools in the Cairns Diocese have access to a large team of specialists who support students of all abilities to achieve their best educational outcomes. “We create a caring and supportive environment that’s inclusive to every student,” said Tom O’Donnell, Catholic Education Services (CES) Director of Student Services. “Young people are coming to schools with diverse needs, and we want to enable all those young people to access the best education they require and deserve.” CES’ Student Services team includes speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, counsellors and a variety of other professionals who support students in all of the Cairns Diocese’s 29 schools and colleges. “We also have educational officers and inclusive educational teachers

who work with the schools and the learning support teachers, who are based in schools, to work with young people who need learning support.” Inclusive practices are fundamental to the ethos of Cairns Catholic schools and form part of the pastoral, spiritual, intellectual, physical, cultural and social development of all students. “It is about trying to engage young people to give them the best opportunity,” Mr O’Donnell said. “Our aim is to enable all young people who, for whatever reason might find school a bit difficult, to be in a caring and supportive environment.” CES’ concept of inclusion is based on the provision of a collaborative, supportive and engaging educational environment, where all students are given the opportunities to learn and achieve to their potential. “Every student deserves the right to a good education,” Mr O’Donnell said.

Inclusion is fundamental to the ethos of the Catholic faith, the belief that every human being is made in the image of God, every individual having unique gifts and strengths that should be nurtured and nourished. At Holy Cross School, Trinity Park, inclusion in education is embodied in Holy Cross School’s Mission Statement, ‘A true sense of belonging within a Christian environment’. Holy Cross is a school that embraces inclusion, illustrated by two special needs children with Autism Spectrum Disorder being warmly welcomed into Prep at the start of this school year. “Holy Cross put everything in place to make it a successful transition for both Cade and Giancarlo,” explains Cade’s father, Jack Eldred. “We shopped around, but other schools weren’t ticking the boxes. Holy Cross School just felt right for Cade. The school really planned and considered everything.” The school appointed an extra teacher and teacher aide to cater for the needs of Cade and Giancarlo, creating a specialised space in which the children can learn at their own pace, away from the hustle and bustle of a regular classroom. Principal Sarah Hamilton said this room is affectionately referred to as the ‘Harmony Room’. “The program is completely flexible. We plan work programs based upon the Australian Curriculum Foundation (Prep) program and modify them,” Sarah explains. The boys effectively have two Prep teachers and two School Officers designated to their education. The CairnsLife 101 Magazine

program is designed so that the boys can spend as much time as is appropriate in their regular Prep classroom and when the need arises, they return to the Harmony Room. Sarah says the children are a blessing to have at the school. “They are a gift because they look at the world differently, which makes other kids look at things differently. That’s lovely. “Enrolment of special needs students in the school is teaching other students about empathy, inclusion, and being accepting of people’s differences. This, in itself, is a valuable lesson, and reflects the Catholic ethos to value diversity and treat every individual with dignity and respect. “Children will carry this understanding with them into adulthood, which contributes to a more understanding and caring society,” says Sarah. Parents of both children have expressed their delight at what they describe as a wonderful experience. “The teachers really know how to relate to, and engage Cade,” says Jack. “We want him to spend as much time with other kids as possible - this is really important so Cade learns to be part of the group.” Sarah said students were already going out of their way to spend time with the boys in the Harmony Room in their breaks. “They’re playing games with them, being very re-assuring and gentle with them, it is beautiful to witness,” says Sarah.

YOUNG SCHOLARS ON A PATH TO SUCCESS Through the development of the Tropical North Learning Academy, Trinity Beach State School (TBSS) aims to provide opportunities for students across Far North Queensland. The Academy is a result of a strategic partnership between TBSS, Smithfield State High School and James Cook University and offers a wide range of academic, sport, arts and vocational programs. One such program is the Young Scholars Program. This program is directed towards year 5 and 6 students displaying high levels of academic achievement, engagement, attendance and behaviour. At present, there are 100 students participating in the program, with students joining in from Caravonica and Yorkeys Knob State School as well. The program focuses on the following subject areas; Philosophy in Action, Young Entrepreneurship, Environmental Sustainability and Makerspace (STEM). These subjects are delivered by teachers at both TBSS and Smithfield State High School. WORDS BY BRIDEY ZELL PHOTOS BY SILVIA MOGOROVICH

“Young Scholars provides opportunities for students to participate in exciting and engaging subjects that will assist in preparing students for what to expect in high school, as well as getting them thinking about tertiary studies and beyond” said TBSS principle, Matthew Denzin, “It has also provided us a platform for building strong community relationships, with organisations such as The Space and Holloways Beach Environmental Centre supporting this fantastic program”. Drone surveys and startup challenges are just some of the exciting projects that students are participating in. With the program in its early beginning, and retention rates at an impressive 95%, it is hoped that as the program grows, it may be adopted by other schools and implemented across across the region. JOHN O’BRIEN 1AAP MOTORING JOHN O’Brien once tried giving up work but quickly decided retirement wasn’t for him. Now 65, the motor industry veteran still shows no sign of slowing down as he drives a new Great Wall and Haval dealership in Cairns. His company 1AAP Motoring is the only Great Wall franchise north of Mackay and one of two Haval dealers in Queensland. Armed with decades of experience and a youthful enthusiasm, John is eager to help grow the Chineseowned brands in what is a highly competitive market. “I’ve been in the industry for a long time and I’ve seen manufacturers come and go,” he said. “I remember way back when Toyota came into the market with a lot of bang and it was said they would never succeed.

Well, they’re “ number one in the marketplace in Australia.

“If they’re big, professional outfits, it doesn’t matter where they come from – they’re going to make an impact on this market.” “So I suspect and am convinced that Haval and Great Wall will follow suit.” 1AAP Motoring welcomed its first shipment in February and will soon have a display centre worth $1 million and featuring both new and used vehicles. John aims to cater to a diverse range of buyers and has tipped the Haval H6, an award-winning medium SUV, to be popular.

WORDS BY KIMBERLEY VLASIC PHOTO BY PHOTOHOLICSTUDIO

“I expect that to go very well and I expect the Haval H2 to go very well because it’s got all the good points about the vehicle that the others have got, such as styling, but at the same time it can be sold at $22,000 – that puts it in the small car market,” said John. The opening of 1AAP Motoring earlier this year was a long time coming for John, who spent 24 years at the helm of the Pacific Toyota Group before moving into management consulting. After an eight-year hiatus from the motor industry, he is thrilled to be back on the showroom floor doing what he does best – charming customers and nurturing the next generation of businessmen and women. “I love training people and I love seeing young people succeed,” he said. “There are a lot of people who have been through my dealerships and they’ve opened dealerships of their own. “I’m pretty proud of that to be quite honest.” John acknowledges the industry has changed dramatically since he first got his start in 1981, with the advent of the internet and digital marketing. Consumers are also savvier, doing their own research and comparing prices before presenting at dealerships, which keeps staff on their toes. “They know what they want,” said John. “If you’re not prepared to meet the market and provide what they want, they will go elsewhere, and there are plenty of opportunities to go elsewhere.” But what hasn’t changed is the focus on customer satisfaction, which is paramount at 1AAP Motoring. “That goes right from the day that they walk in, to the day they drive out in a new car,” said John.

CAR BORE D AV I D L E I T H

A couple of months ago, I sold my Jag after 20 years of virtually continuous ownership and was surprised to find myself bereft of Britain’s finest chariot - if you discount Aston, which they don’t, so I have to... That’s not to say that I haven’t drooled with old fashioned avarice at the new DB11, or indeed any that had a DB in front of it. Here in the antipodes, Aston’s just remain too damned expensive. But that returns me to my quandary - what will fill the Jag-shaped hole on my driveway. Long ago I vowed never to buy a new luxury car - the pain of depreciation is like going on a starvation diet but finding out you weigh more afterwards than when you started. Wandering through the local classifieds is a mine-filled with emotional and financial turmoil, the other day I noticed a 2009 Audi A4 S-Line Quattro (a vehicle that, when new, has caused the sale of many grandmothers), it was, and still is, a stunner of a car, and when full of leather and blessed with a turbo charged AWD, it’s no slouch either. Factor all this in for a smidge under $20K and it feels outstanding. Is that a good idea? Compared to the original $70K it seems so... A few clicks later I am confronted with a Jaguar. Not an elderly, mobile oil leak, but a sleek, steely-eyed XF, replete with V6, full leather and the gear knob that rises on it’s own from the consul on

startup. All in black, it is indistinguishable (to most observers) from the current model less than 5 years old for less than $30K. What the hell would I have got for the extra $50K eight years ago? Peace of mind, warranty, new car smell?… I admit the Bluetooth is better in today’s version, but overall I can just as easily see myself in either vehicle. More clicking, and I’m reeling under the barrage of Lexus, Mercs and Beamers. But before I got carried away on the tide of used luxury car ownership, I thought ‘There has to be a catch’. Firstly, my faithful XJ managed to go for 370,000 kms and has also gone on to another happy owner. Apparently this is not normal, and mainly brought on by my fastidious servicing regime, and maintenance, regardless of cost. This marks me out as at least odd, if not downright rare. Buying a used luxury or exotic car, is a license to throw money out the window in big, guffawing mechanic bills. I was advised clearly by favourite mechanic not to buy a late model Range Rover unless I had a second car. The fact that the asking price was $30K didn’t initially detract from the original purchase price 12 years ago of $200K. Where did $170K go, I wasn’t game to find out. The pain-free driving under the manufacturer’s warranty can really outweigh the feeling of picking up a stylish mobile money pit. The

trick, apart perhaps from being lucky, is to take note of the details. ‘One owner’, ‘low mileage’, ‘fully serviced’, ‘locally owned’ are all words you should want to see attached to any used purchase. Unless local is near the sea; fully serviced means rebuilt after an accident; and the one owner was

a myopic psychopath on a cross country murder spree. Simply put, if you compare depreciation with cost of used ownership you are one major failure away from wishing you had bought new. That feels like roulette, but if you use common sense you could well come out ahead.

DESIGN AWARD TRIUMPH FOR NEW LEXUS LS

Featuring a radical design, the new Lexus flagship sedan presents a coupe-like silhouette and a cabin inspired by the finest traditions of Japanese hospitality and craftsmanship.

The design team started with a clean sheet to reimagine what a flagship model should be and to exceed the expectations of luxury customers, as if launching the brand for the first time.

The EyesOn Design Awards are the officially sanctioned design awards at NAIAS, honouring the best production and concept vehicles making their world debut. The winners are selected by a panel of design leaders representing global automotive manufacturers and top design schools.

LS chief designer Koichi Suga said the goal was to make the same impact as Lexus did with the original LS when it debuted in 1989.

The fifth generation LS has been styled by the Lexus Design Division in Japan. It represents the pinnacle of the Lexus brand as a new-generation luxury car that embodies distinctly Japanese traditions and cultural influences.

“We’re very proud that the EyesOn Design judges recognised our efforts and awarded the best interior honour to the LS 500,” Mr Suga said. If you are interested in finding out more about the LS, or any of the other vehicles in the Lexus range, then please call Grant Woolcock at Lexus Of Cairns 40 307 555

THERE & BACK

AGAIN

IRELANDS

It is testament to the serious strategic direction of the new boss of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Australia, Steve Zanlunghi, with the launch of an improved ‘Jeep There and Back’ warranty and service extended deals. Simply put, all new MY17 Jeep models sold in Australia will now be offered with a transferrable five-year warranty, lifetime roadside assistance and a capped-price servicing schedule as standard, the brand’s parent company, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, confirmed today. “The Jeep There & Back Guarantee is the next step in our commitment to improve the Jeep ownership experience,” said Jeep Australia CEO, Steve Zanlunghi. This significant warranty extension and offers of ongoing capped serving and assistance are all very much Jeep putting it’s money where it’s mouth is. The Jeep family has grown to encompass a

range suited to almost all users, and have resonated with the ‘go anywhere’ nature and aspirations of both urban and country buyers. Steve went on to say, “This is not a limited-time offer or a short-term promotion. It forms a fundamental component of our business going forward and it’s a commitment to our owners now and in the future.” This is fighting talk, especially pitched against other high end Luxury SUVs with expensive purchase prices that are backed only with comparatively short warranties and chronic depreciation rates. Competition in the segment remains fierce at all levels and this kind of initiative will without doubt build confidence and win business. Pop over to Irelands Cairns to test drive their new and frankly great looking Jeep range and for a full explanation of how to get there and back again!
