LIFE In Your Opinion “In your opinion, has the crime rate in Cairns increased in recent times and, if so, what do you feel needs to happen to reduce the incidence of serious crimes being committed?”

CR CATHY ZEIGER

DIVISION 3 COUNCILLOR Crime statistics have a list of contributing factors such as unemployment, drugs/alcohol, lack of accessible activities for youth, disengagement from community, family dysfunction ... to name a few. During our recent school holidays, some suburbs experienced an increase of 40% in criminal activity! So, what’s the answer? The answer is bigger than just one action, one group or Government handouts. I believe they if we are to achieve a decrease in crime, we need to look at the whole picture. A seemingly impossible proposal, but perhaps not if we look at the issue collectively. The term ‘Collective Impact’ means just that; to address a particular issue together. To get all the main stakeholders working together on the same page; Qld Police, community service providers, leaders from local community groups, bureaucrats etc.. To put personal or political agendas aside and work together for a common goal. To identify then prioritise one particular issue at a time, agree on the process then move forward together for the common goal. I believe we can also do this on a smaller scale. Currently I’m working on an informal community ‘gathering’ for one of the hotspots on the southside. Gathering the ‘assets’ of our community; residents, local business owners, Council, local community leaders, Police and Police Liaison Officers, Dept. of Housing reps, community service workers, land owners etc. to talk collectively about their ideas, build relationships, foster respect and improve pride of place in their space. Together we can make a difference.

No. A change has occurred in Cairns in the severity of crime. Total crime numbers I believe are stable. Killing and sexual assaults have occurred in just this past week as I write. Outside Cairns Central a woman was raped then later another assaulted nearby as it is alleged, and in a family home in White Rock a 27 year old man was killed by what appears to be a punch attack. Almost daily lately we hear of devastation such as that in Paris, Munich and Kabul. Consequently we despair and shake our heads asking where the world is heading. Crime across the world is a constant, a symptom of the human condition. A shooting in the US is in our lounge rooms within the half hour. We however can be the difference in Our community. What can be lost in all the noise is what’s happening in our own backyard. Of course over a shooter in Munich we are powerless. Not so in our own city. We have the power to make a difference to one. Just Thursday in Shields St within the week of the sexual assault charged in Bunda St I intervened when a backpacker was approached and then aggressively asked for money. I spoke to others out that night who reported doing the same thing - Intervening on behalf of others, predominantly the tourists in our city. A few times a week people are intervening in their defence. It certainly isn’t that people aren’t caring. The problem that occurs is what happens when nobody is around to intervene? This is where well lit and well constructed pathways are important. Of crucial importance however are the eyes and ears of the community. Co-operatively with Police and authorities a great difference can be made. “The thing necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing,” - Edmund Burke Women and men of Cairns are making a change. Let them know just how important they are then see even more that will be done to overcome these cowardly menaces.

There is no question our crime rates are on the rise in the Cairns region. Compared to this time last year there has been a significant spike in incidences. According to Queensland Police’s own statistics the crime rate rises in our city each year, but to look at it in context, so does our population.

We will never get away from having a transient population as we live in such an enviable climate at this time of year. The spike usually occurs around May/June/July when people come here to escape the southern winter. So one has to ask the question, does our serious crime rate have to do with the significant influx in our transient population at this time of year? Drug crime rates are also on the rise which correlates with the ice epidemic we are experiencing. We cannot underestimate how damaging this epidemic is to our social fabric. We have an increase in homelessness and domestic violence rates and an unemployment rate that is less than ideal. All this makes for a perfect environment for crime to fester. I don’t think there is one simple answer, but what I do think will help is more lighting in key locations in our city and surrounding suburbs so areas are well lit where people frequent and are walking home of an evening, an increase in CCTV and also an increase in our police numbers to be commensurate with our population increase each year.

LIFE Grumpy Old Man

Who are these

HIPSTERS? I’ve just come back from the Hipster capital of the world. My goodness what a bunch of whackos there are infesting the CBD of Melbourne. Just walking around the mall I could have been mistaken for thinking I was walking through a sea of unmade beds. I’ve never seen so much facial hair, man buns, ugly clothing, short long pants and stupid boots. About every 30 meters there was some fruitcake trying to warn me that Jesus was about to arrive and then some lady was screaming at everyone about global warming and how the Bourke St Mall would be under 2 meters of water in 150 years time. Then there were animal activists demanding I stop eating meat, and finally a bloke (I think he was a bloke) holding up a sign saying “I don’t like signs”. All this advice and bossy in your face behavior. It felt just like home with my kids! Enough I thought. My stomach clock went off and I went in search of a good old fashioned burger and chips. How hard could that be right? CBD of Melbourne, cafes everywhere, food heaven I thought. I plundered through laneways, alleys and back streets covered in graffiti art in amongst the masses of the hipster world of frayed denim, chinos, singlets under torn and strip jackets and an array of fedora hats but all I could find were “Hipster Cafes” offering almond milk turmeric lattes. WTF! I gave up and joined the trend and sat myself down at some place that looked at least 50% normal. The smelly waiter handed me a menu and I immediately searched for

Danny Bet ro s

the burger, up and down the menu, turned it over, looked at it over and over- no bloody burger. I couldn’t even understand the menu. There were about ten different types of lettuce but none were actually called lettuce, all mixed with grains, seeds and berries that sounded like a selection from the pet food store and dressings sounding like a mix of eco oil and organic fertilizers. All I could find was some poached organic chicken breast mixed with a truckload of healthy shit. To make matters worse when it arrived it was so small I almost inhaled it. I went off to meet my wife all wound up and cranky because I hadn’t had my chips or meat and it wasn’t long before hipster rage hit me again. We were following this young couple and the lady had a backpack wide open and all of her items were about to fall out. My daughter and I warned my wife not to say anything but she said “Excuse me miss but your bag is open and everything is about to fall out”. The androgynous creature stopped turned around and said “Ok but I’m not a miss, all right”. That was it I lost it and due to not being able to have my burger and chips and being extra cranky I gave it to her with both barrels for being a rude a…hole. We went back to our Hotel and still feeling hungry I thought I’ll have a snack from the mini bar but wouldn’t you know it, all there was were ultra-healthy food bars, with ingredients I had to google search to understand what I was about to eat. Not even a packet of bloody Pringles to snack on.

The last time I spoke to Warren Entsch, the rambunctious Member of Parliament was on a crane platform wearing a hi-vis vest and hardhat when he broke out into an impromptu version of the YMCA. Today however, his feet are firmly on solid ground. In his electoral office on Mulgrave Road the solid hum of day-to-day operations is slowly replacing the euphoric buzz surrounding his re-election to the seat of Leichhardt. Opposite his desk hangs a large painting of a Neptune Bomber in honour of the aircraft he worked on during his time in the RAAF. Another wall is adorned with a colourful carved fish given to Entsch by a Somali pirate when he visited a prison in the Seychelles, while photographs of Entsch holding a crocodile or with his arms around a celebrity are interspersed with candid snaps of his loved ones. There is none of the pompous formality that you might expect from a long serving politician. As we start talking it quickly becomes apparent that when it comes to Warren Entsch, what you see is what you get.

Warren Entsch circa 1980

“I have a very good reputation within bureaucracy and the ministerial staff. They know that I will pursue things, that I won’t give up, and I won’t take any bullshit,” he says. In typical Entsch style, when former Minister for the Environment David Kemp sent him a bureaucratic response to a question via fax back in the early 2000’s, Entsch returned the fax with the word “Bullshit” scrawled in black texta across the page. He also sent a copy to Prime Minister John Howard. He had both on the phone within minutes. When Entsch talks, people listen.

two decades ago, when the then 26-year-old Yolonde applied for and subsequently secured the role of Entsch’s Executive Assistant.

We go back in time as he regales in stories of his youth, the cadence of his husky drawl drawing me in and painting a vivid picture of the life of a young country boy.

“I had the interview with Warren and we just hit it off straight away. I’d spent hours working on my CV and he didn’t even look at it,” she laughs.

According to Entsch, the family lived simply yet never went without. The eldest of four, he recalls plucking chickens for the family meals among his childhood chores, and claims to have not worn shoes until he started high school.

Both had recently separated from their respective spouses, and within months were dating. While they parted ways six years later, they were never far from each other’s thoughts, finally reconnecting in 2012.

He talks about his dad regularly returning on his pushbike from hunting trips with ducks draped over one handlebar and a bucket of fish on the other, and of not realising until he was much older that ducks are usually cooked and served minus shotgun pellets. From his early years as a “railway brat” in Mareeba and Cloncurry to his first real job in the Bank of New South Wales, where as a skinny 16-year-old kid with Bermuda shorts and long white socks he ran security on utefulls of cash from Mareeba to Cairns, his sense of adventure and knock about personality shine through. Citing his late father George, a former cattle train driver, as his single greatest influence, Entsch grew up with a strong sense of family values and the desire to work hard. “I absolutely loved my dad. Even today, nineteen years later I still can see him, I can feel him and hear him. I miss him and I like to think that I have a lot of his character,” says Entsch, his voice trailing off. An unlikely politician, Entsch was straight off cattle and crocodile farms and, by his own volition, “a duck out of water” when he first contested – and won - the seat of Leichhardt in 1996. As a reward to himself he purchased his now infamous British Green1995 Heritage Soft Tail Harley Davidson motorbike. “I’ve always had bikes as long as I can remember in my adult life, but to me the Harley was the Holy Grail. When I first saw it in the showroom I had to be careful I didn’t drool over the seat,” he laughs. These days however he doesn’t get many opportunities to ride. In addition to his work in politics, Entsch also dedicates his

time to a range of social issues, including the tuberculosis challenge in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, a cause close to his heart after his mother suffered with the illness during Entsch’s teen years. Considering His Holiness the Dalai Lama amongst his friends, Entsch is also the Chair of the Australian Tibetan Group.

Warren’s compassion for people is amazing. He loves people and people energize him. His energy levels are like that of a teenager, says his wife Yolonde.

Sharing Entsch’s passion for humanitarian work, Yolonde is the Community Ambassador for YWAM Medical Ship, Australia’s only Training and Medical ship in Papua New Guinea. She also manages Thiaki Creek Farm, the couple’s two hundred acre cattle property at Jaggan, near Malanda, where she has been working on developing an elite Brangus herd. The Entsch’s have been married for three years, however their initial meeting was nearly

When not on parliamentary duties in Canberra, the Entsch’s divide their time between their residence in Whitfield and the farm, where, along with cattle, Entsch breeds South American Macaw Parrots and White Peacocks. Sharing the same values around family, life and humanity, the Entsch’s have successfully blended Warren’s adult children and grandchildren with Yolonde’s nine-year-old daughter. While Yolonde believes that Entsch’s personality, charisma and determination are amongst his best qualities, she is surprised at his popularity with his colleagues in Canberra, given that he doesn’t fit the mould of a sophisticated, suit-wearing politician. “Because he is not a career politician he has never been afraid to speak his mind or speak against his own leader. We’ve seen him do it time and time again when he passionately believes in something,” she says. “I enjoy the work that I do here. It doesn’t matter who people are or where people come from, if they have a need for my assistance I will give it my best shot,” adds Entsch. For the residents of Leichhardt, the fact that 66-year-old Entsch will be around for at least the next three years is reassuring. Afterall, if Warren Entsch is your voice, then it’s guaranteed that you will be heard.

Now in its 55th year the Cairns Festival will present a vibrant and diverse program of music, art, circus, family entertainment, film and more. The 2016 program celebrates the distinctive colours and hues of our tropical lifestyle with this year’s theme ‘Colours of Us’. In addition to presenting national and international performers, musicians and artists, the festival will provide a platform for our finest local talents to shine. On Friday 26 August, the first night of the Festival, Tanks Arts Centre hosts Harry James Angus as part of their Jazz Up North Series. Harry is best known as the trumpet playing singer from The Cat Empire who recently sold out 3 shows at the Tanks. For over 50 years the ever popular Grand Parade has been a reflection of the Cairns community and this year is no exception. Get down to the Cairns Esplanade early on Saturday 27 August to enjoy the free entertainment from 10am on the Cairns Festival main stage featuring the Ukulele Community Concert, leading up to the 5.30pm Grand Parade. The evening wraps up with a spectacular fireworks display followed by a live performance by local favourites, The Montgomery Brothers. Who could forget the light projections which animated the façade of the Cairns City Library during the Cairns

Festival in 2015. People returned night after night to watch the captivating story unfold. This year, the artist responsible, Australian Craig Walsh, will return with new instalment, enLIGHTenment – Ocean and Earth, which explores the influence of the forest, the ocean and the place where they meet. In a first for Cairns, extraordinary light painting events will take place across the community. Luminous Cairns, facilitated by light-painting and visiting artist, Peter Solness, will invite participants to volunteer as an ‘Orbster’ and spin specially designed lanterns around their bodies, creating trails of light to be captured in spectacular photographs. Must-see exhibition Energy will grace the gallery tank at Tanks Arts Centre launching on 2 September. Bear witness to the astonishing talent of this region’s up and coming visual artists produced solely by school students. Returning for a third year is Sunday On The ‘Nard. Relax into a day of entertainment at this family favourite event starting from 9am on 28 August. The Colours of Us Tent and the Musical Tones Stage will present a plethora of local musicians and performers before settling into the main event from 6.30pm, when the acclaimed Melbourne Ska Orchestra (MSO) inject a dose of foot-stomping funk into this family-friendly evening of music and DANCE! Following their striking performance in Fogarty Park last year, which undoubtedly bred a new generation of children who will want to leave home and join the circus, Brisbane based Circa will return to Cairns with a brand new tale told through their trademark contemporary animal-free circus performance. vibrant &diverse anecdotes of creatures of land and sea who tumble, fly, leap and spin their way through the many wondrous worlds of the animal kingdom. This free event will be staged in the Munro Martin Parklands on 2 September. Another event set to leave an impression is an outdoor performance by award-winning vocal ensemble, the Soweto Gospel Choir (SGC), from Johannesburg. SGC will present renditions of international classics and South African freedom songs. The performance will be complemented by local choir Sounds of AustraNesia and staged at Munro Martin Parklands on Saturday 3 September. Rounding off the 10 days of events is Carnival on Collins, at Tanks Arts Centre on Sunday 4 September. This popular event will feature BULLHORN – a 9 piece brass band with a sound born of funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz, reggae and dance music. The Carnival will also feature singing gentleman-adventurer Mr’ Uptown’ Brown Esquire plus activities for the kids, roving performers, local musicians, art, wildlife, circus, and more. ARTS TaNKsCENTRE INTERVIEW WITH

STEVE Clisby by Di na A m i n

While one foot taps away in the jazz camp, the other straddles soul. Steve Clisby — former semi-finalist on the hit Australian talent show The Voice — is a refreshing player in the revivalist movement. His music pays tribute to soul and jazz legends like Barry White, James Brown and Herbie Hancock. Steve acknowledges his music as cross-over; a style that has been shaped and influenced by the improvisational methods that came out of the jazz-rock and jazz fusion scene of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Since competing on The Voice, Steve hasn’t stopped working. He will be performing an intimate show at Tanks this September as part of the Jazz Up North series. Originally from Pasadena California, Steve has spent most of his life travelling and touring. He spent several years in Europe as a working musician. Residing in Holland, Steve formed the fusion band American Gypsy, which kick-started an 18-year career. He toured internationally, recorded alongside some formidable industry heads and even supported Tina Turner on her 1996 European tour. In 1999 Steve moved to Australia and hasn’t looked back since; currently residing in Sydney and performing and recording with the Steve Clisby band, which consists of Steve on vocals; Bill Risby on keyboards; Ian Mussington on drums; Alex Hewetson on bass; Jonathan Pease on guitar and Craig Walters on sax.

STEVE CLISBY JAZZ UP NORTH 2016

Steve’s performance at Tanks in September will be minimal and intimate; just Steve and Bill Risby on piano. According to Steve, it will be a re-creation of their 2009 album, Golden Ring.

FRIDAY 9 SEPTEMBER After a 60 year music career spanning the globe, Steve Clisby’s supreme musicianship and legendary cool has been ‘discovered’ by an adoring audience – with a little help from mainstream TV. Steve Clisby was the best kept secret in his adopted home of Australia until last year when he captivated audiences on the TV talent juggernaut, The Voice, reaching the semi-finals. The ageless appeal of this accomplished artist has brought him a legion of loyal fans, with his first tour following The Voice selling out 20 shows across the Country. Moving seamlessly from his jazz background to northern soul revival, Steve Clisby sets out to bring a fresh interpretation to his African American heritage and inspire a new generation of fans. “It was initially used as a promotional CD for Stewart Pianos, but it ended up becoming my favourite album out of all the albums I’ve released,” says Steve. “It was just Bill and myself in the studio. I wouldn’t say it was improvisational but the arrangements were definitely spontaneous. It took two days of studio time and it turned out to be the most real, raw album we’ve ever done. We’ll also do some fractured versions of songs that we usually do with the full band; it’s always nice because we get a chance to stretch out a bit. Bill is a fantastic pianist. We will have two keyboards because I play as well.” Steve is no stranger to Northern Queensland and is looking forward to his return. “We’ve got some friends up in Port Douglas,” he says. “I remember my first performance in Cairns. I thought Tanks was the perfect vibe. The sound was great and the people were really good — we had a ball. I think the most intriguing thing was realising that the people were actually there to hear music. They weren’t there to drink; they weren’t there to chat loudly; they were there to listen to the music and for a musician it’s very special to be able to play at a place where the people have come to the venue purely for the music.” Catch Steve when he performs at Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 9th September for one night only. The Jazz Up North series is an annual program that includes upcoming performances from Harry James Angus and George Washingmachine. Earlier this year saw performances from Kate Ceberano, Wilma Reading and Juliana Areias. For more information and to purchase tickets, head to www.tanksartscentre.com

LIFE Wine Buff

Show us

your medals... Michael Ryan

To many, the raison d’etre of a wine ‘show’ and wine judging in general is an antiquated enigma. The image of glass swirling, pinky pointing wines judges in front of long linen-white tables, bejewelled with glass after glass of ruby red wine is perhaps curious at best. It seems far removed from the cluttered, busy isles of Dan Murphy’s and First Choice. Yet the two are in fact inexorably linked as buyers from these and other retail outlets are influenced and informed buy show results and trends. And whilst it would appear that wine judging is almost the perfect past-time or hobby, I can assure you that although very exciting, it is a meticulous and quite arduous exercise! BUT, someone has to do it! The real question is, does the garish necklace of medals that some

producers choose to embellish their award winning wines make a difference to the wine consumer? Have a think about it – are you influenced by such decorations? I confess that I am – especially if the awards are from the major shows. I remember judging at the Cairns show some years ago when James Halliday was Chairman. In his pre-game address he outlined the characteristics we were looking for in the various classes and how important it was to find the stand out examples. The Gold medal wines he insisted, “should make you want to sing for joy”. The golds in the class then compete for best in class and ultimately for champion wine of the show and other prestigious awards. So my advice is to get very excited about wines that are proud to show their form- especially if they boast various trophies. The attached photo is a prime example of a super high quality, cellar release wine which was proud to wear its accolades around its neck.

CairnsLife 20 Magazine

D’Arenburg “The Dry Dam” McLarenvale Riesling 2008. $32.00 This multi award winning cellar release wine is a spectacular example of a fully developed aged Australian Riesling. It’s unctuous mouth feel is pre-empted by a swooning bouquet of honey, citrus and green apple. These flavours develop on the palate with some residual sugar, yet enormous heft and power until it elegantly retreats into a crisp dry flinty finish. It is mouth wateringly delicious. The wine won the trophy for the best Riesling of the 2015 Royal Adelaide wine show and I note also that it lists the “John Ryan memorial trophy” for best aromatic wine of the Sydney Wine Competition in its CV…. That’ll do me!

Munro Martin

Parklands A new place to gather

A brand new venue has opened in the heart of Cairns, with the newly redeveloped Munro Martin Parklands (MMP) marking the dawning of a new place to gather and relax for families, visitors, and the general public. Tropical plantings, vine covered pergolas and arbours, and an open-air plaza will encourage leisurely use of the Parklands, which can accommodate an audience of up to 3,000 to enjoy one of the many versatile uses of the new venue. The MMP site has a long and rich history as a key gathering point for the Cairns community for more than a century. Since the 1800s the park has had many roles, from sporting precinct to botanic garden, military base and home to celebrations and commemorations. Work to transform Munro Martin Park into tropical parklands and entertainment venue officially started in August last year. A year on, MMP has been reinstated as Cairns’ premiere park boasting lush landscaping with an outdoor entertainment space to host community events, festivals, music performances and more. The Parklands will also provide Cairns with an outdoor amphitheatre-style performance venue to provide a dramatic entry statement to the city. The $10 million-dollar project includes the planting of 63 trees, nearly 7000 shrubs and ground covers, and 275 vines, aiding as an attractive backdrop to the Cairns Performing Arts Centre, which will open in early 2018. A history trail telling the many and varied stories associated with the park and a refurbished obelisk in memory of the Munro Martin sisters, (who the park is named after,) add a historical background to the site.

OPENING PROGRAM – FREE & TICKETED SHOWS, SPECTACULARS AND EVENTS ON OFFER The Parklands are set to open to the public in the coming weeks, and a month’s worth of opening celebrations, including free and ticketed events, will showcase the full capabilities of the versatile new inner-city venue. To complement the relaxing and visually lush atmosphere, the public are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and picnic treats to the events. With events already full-booked, tickets are still available to secure a spot to one of the historical opening events that complete the hype surrounding the opening of the Parklands. AUGUST 13 The first free community event, A Night in the Parklands, booked out within weeks of the 2,800 free tickets being released to the public. The event features renowned Australian songstress Kate Miller-Heidke, the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Inspire Quartet and the Australian Ballet Education Ensemble, as well as quality local performers. AUGUST 15 – 16 Two free film nights dedicated to mature filmgoers as part of Seniors Week celebrations will screen in the Parklands. [Tickets still available] AUGUST 19 The official opening will host proceedings from Mayor Bob Manning and Governor of Queensland, His Excellency, the Honourable Paul de Jersey (AC) who will deliver opening addresses. The free event also features Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville by Opera Queensland.

Set up as a roastery and café in 2010, the original owners looked to Cairns locals rather than catering for tourists. In 2013 the roastery became too big for the Scott Street site, so that part of the business was moved to

Portsmith. Damien Brown, owner of Industry One café since April this year, was almost a permanent fixture of the café himself when the opportunity came along to purchase. “I was just about a daily visitor from day one. I think the concrete was still being poured for the floor. I’m surprised they didn’t lock me in there at night. I loved the coffee, the atmosphere and the friendly staff, and it was a natural progression to take on ownership,” says Damien. Damien and previous owners Steve and Ali, now operating the roastery, work closely to bring wonderful coffee to local workers. “Three times a week we get our coffee beans freshly roasted. How many places get their coffee supplied freshly roasted every two days? Industry One Roastery imports only ‘specialty’ coffee from top producers around the world, that is, the top 5% of coffee grown in the world, picked, processed and stored to the most exacting standards, free from defects and possessing

From those different origins, the roastery produces its own blends, but if it wants to showcase a particular theme from a particular country, it roasts it on its own so the distinct flavours can be savoured. “Here it’s always been about great coffee, looking after our regular customers and welcoming new ones every day. Our baristas are probably among the best, if not the best in Cairns. “We don’t have a large shop frontage, so people are surprised when they come in and see how big the café really is. “Our baker comes in at 5.30am and bakes the most delicious cakes, tarts, muffins, cupcakes and slices right here in the café,” says Damien. “We also serve a variety of freshly baked and filled ciabattas, croissants and super healthy salads. Our savoury muffins toasted with relish have a bit of a cult following, and we offer gluten free alternatives. “I like our team to work together and be with our customers rather than the bakers be shut out the back. We’re like a big family with our customers – most of the team have been here since I first came here as a customer,” adds Damien. Industry One also runs a Barista School for coffee aficionados, with a Barista Master Class (maximum four people), a Barista Short Course, an Extraction course, Milk Texturing and Latte Art and a Cupping Evening.

Being a farmer in Australia in the 21st century is not for the faint-hearted. It takes true grit and resourcefulness. Dependent on an increasingly inconsistent climate, with natural disasters and drought affecting farmers all over the country, they also have to deal with corporate megaliths battling to win customers with price wars on staple food items. 10/85 Lake St, Cairns QLD 07 4031 5698 thesourcebulkfoodscairns @thesourcecairns cairns@thesourcebulkfoods.com.au

The Jonsson family have dealt with drought; they have laid over 100 kilometers of poly pipe on their property to bring water to their cattle. They have dealt with two major cyclones in five years; the devastation of their avocado trees cost them that year’s hard work and income. They have dealt with the emotional turmoil that accompanies these events. But when it came to the increasingly unsustainable returns offered by the supermarket chains, Warren Jonsson says “I’d had a gutful!”, and they dealt with that by creating Jonsson’s Farm Market, which opened in Stratford in 2011 and at Stockland Earlville Shopping Centre in 2013. They took a huge risk, but with community support for local produce and low food miles, they have successfully integrated the two businesses providing jobs for 70 locals in the region. They are also growing the wholesale side of the business – supplying local restaurants and communities in Cape York. In 2012 they attended the NAB Agribusiness Awards Gala dinner, where they were honoured with the National Award for Driving Strategic Growth. Warren is a third generation Tablelands farmer, his grandfather was one of the pioneers in the region, growing potatoes and other vegetables and running cattle, as well as supplying to greengrocers in Cairns and Innisfail. Warren’s father expanded the business to distribute to Townsville, Brisbane and Sydney. Warren bought his first farm at Evelyn Central at 21 after finishing his studies at Longreach Agriculture College. Marrying Gail in 1981, they had three sons who all work for the family business. Brad, their eldest son, manages the Evelyn property, where they grow potatoes, avocados, tomatoes, capsicum, eggplants, as well as making hay and silage – even little Jack (one of the fifth generation of Jonsson’s) helps his dad out making hay bales! Dean manages Wombinoo Station, where they do the breeding and feeding of 4000 head

Luke works at Jonsson’s Farm Market selling the family farm produce, where, as Gail says, they are “Proud to showcase other local producers”. Jonsson’s Farm Market is definitely a showcase of the region’s finest, including the award winning Barramundi Spring Rolls made in Julatten, and Daintree Chocolate, which Jonsson’s was the first to stock and is now making its way around the world. It certainly makes sense to be supporting our unique local primary produce, and Warren is right: “We’ve got the most diverse growing area (tropical on the coast and sub-tropical up on the tablelands) where 85% of plants on earth can be grown in this region.” The Jonsson family credits their success to “Good land, good water, hard work and surround yourself with good people”. Gail adds humbly “It is very rewarding to have people thank us as a local business and appreciate us supplying local food to local people.”

making a positive impact Living in the Wet Tropics is extraordinary—we are surrounded by one of the most outstanding and celebrated landscapes in the world. The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area encompasses the oldest tropical rainforests on Earth, dating back 110 million years. These forests, and many of their inhabitants, have adapted and persisted through potentially devastating events like natural climate change, ice ages, changing sea levels, and in recent times land clearing and urbanisation.

There are many people working to protect and preserve the World Heritage Area from these threats, keeping it healthy and strong. All levels of government as well as many Traditional Owner groups, landholders and volunteer organisations undertake pest management programs. There are community groups who care for injured wildlife and promote protection of various threatened species, while others plant trees to re-establish forests and wildlife corridors.

Although the World Heritage Convention safeguards the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area from many threats, being surrounded by urban and agricultural areas makes it particularly vulnerable to the impact of human activities. This includes the introduction of invasive plants and animals, which pose a persistent risk to the Area’s rich biodiversity and scenic beauty. Some ornamental garden plants aggressively colonise and crowd out native species. Feral animals spread weeds, carry disease, cause erosion and compete with native animals for food and habitat. Even tiny pests can have a massive impact: yellow crazy ants form ferocious colonies that quickly decimate native wildlife from the bottom to the top of the food chain.

Our day-to-day activities can make a big difference to the integrity of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. If you’re a pet owner, keep your pets at home or in designated areas. When bushwalking, always stay on walking tracks and make sure you aren’t carrying weed seeds on your shoes. Dispose of any green waste appropriately by taking it to council transfer stations or putting it in your compost or green wheelie bin—never dump it in other areas. Those who live in or near a yellow crazy ant infestation area shouldn’t transport vegetation waste, soil, pot plants or other materials that might contain ants. By being mindful of our actions and decisions we contribute to the wellbeing of the Wet Tropics, ensuring future generations also benefit from this extraordinary landscape we call home.

View our comprehensive invasive pests brochure on our web page, or contact us for a copy.

DEVELOPING OPPORTUNITIES FTEC 2016, presented by James Cook University and Cairns Regional Council, will attract a huge range of influential business leaders, policy makers and researchers from Australia and international tropical economies to discuss the factors influencing growth and advancement of tropical economies. This second-annual event also puts Tropical North Queensland in a position to showcase its tropical expertise, knowledge, innovation and associated trade and investment opportunities to a national and global audience. Cairns hosted the inaugural event in 2014 in conjunction with the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting. FTEC is open to everyone with an interest in the challenges and opportunities facing the world’s tropical regions. It will attract delegates from business, industry, academia, indigenous communities and state, territory and local government representatives from Queensland, Western Australian and the Northern Territory. It is also open to CEOs and general managers of businesses in the tropics, sustainability and environment groups, town planners, architects, engineers, technology industries, chambers of commerce, economic development groups, banking and finance sectors, academics and researchers. “Nations located in the tropics are of growing importance to the global economy, and Cairns has positioned itself as an international leader

in the emerging industry of tropical expertise,” Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said. “Our strategic advantage as a developed tropic-zone economy presents us with significant opportunities in areas such as science, technology, health care, human capital and environmental management.” FTEC 2016 will again be connected with the State of the Tropics 2014 Report Sustainable Infrastructure in the Tropics, launched by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in June 2014 and led by James Cook University. Delegates will receive an update on the latest report which explores key indicators around social and economic infrastructure and its role for the future health and sustainability of the tropics. The State of the Tropics Initiative is an international alliance of 11 research institutions dedicated to working towards a better future for the tropics. “Knowledge is power, and this conference will feature internationally renowned experts who will give unique insights into the exciting opportunities for the future of our region, northern Australia and the tropics worldwide,” said James Cook University Vice Chancellor, Professor Sandra Harding “The event brings together a quality line-up of international and Australian speakers – all acclaimed experts in their fields – to highlight the importance of the world’s tropical regions and the challenges they face.”

FOR MAXIMISING THE REGION’S ECONOMIC USE OF ITS TROPICAL CLIMATE IS A KEY HIGHLIGHT OF THE SECOND ANNUAL FUTURE OF TROPICAL ECONOMIES CONFERENCE (FTEC) IN CAIRNS OCTOBER 27-28 AT THE PULLMAN CAIRNS INTERNATIONAL.

Tropical economies are growing 20 per cent faster than the rest of the world, creating high rates of urbanisation and growing consumption patterns. This presents unique and urgent challenges for resilience, growth and sustainability across the tropics. The conference will feature sessions that will look at broader issues including human capital, environment, economics and development and include plenary sessions with handpicked international and Australian speakers from a wide range of specialities on key issues relevant to the conference theme ‘Resilience in the Tropics’. “Cairns Regional Council is committed to enhancing these opportunities for our region, and our Smart City objectives are focused on making Cairns a highly liveable, technologically enabled, active and desirable place to live, work and visit,” Mayor Manning added. Among the impressive list of keynote speakers are Stefan Hajkowicz, Principal Scientist in Strategy and Foresight with the Australian CSIRO, who is a widely published advisor on strategic foresight and author of Global Megatrends: seven patterns of change shaping our future, and Professor Jason Pomeroy, an award-winning architect, academic, author and TV personality at the forefront of the sustainable built environment agenda. “The opportunities for innovation and business in the tropics are immense,” Vice Chancellor Harding added. “Our mission is to help create a brighter future for our region, Northern Australia and the tropics worldwide.” Everyone is welcome to attend FTEC and learn how the region is perfectly positioned for business, investment and how the region is leading the way in tropical innovation.

What you must

know about WILLS. So many people hide their heads in the sand when it comes to making a Will. They simply don’t want to know because it’s all too scary or difficult. But they should know the reality of dying without a Will or dying with an old and outdated Will. I DON’T NEED ONE BECAUSE: If I pass away, everything will automatically go to my spouse or partner. This isn’t necessarily true. If you die without a valid Will, you are said to die ‘intestate’. Without a Will, Queensland law determines how your assets are divided. Your unrecorded wishes have nothing to do with it. According to your personal circumstances at the time of your death, your estate could go to your: • spouse or partner, or • children, or • grandchildren, or • parents, or • siblings (your brothers and sisters), or • nieces and nephews, or • grandparents, or • uncles and aunts, or • cousins. Note: the legal list does not include friends, charities or philanthropic endeavours if that is the way you would have wanted to go. Making a valid Will is the only reliable way to ensure your estate goes to who you want after you pass away.

I’M YOUNG. NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME. Unfortunately, no one usually knows when an accident or illness is about to occur and end your life. Close to 10,000 people died by accident in Australia in 2015. Most of these were in the 15 to 44 year age group. Do you want to gamble that you won’t be one? I DON’T HAVE ANY ASSETS. I DON’T NEED A WILL. In Queensland your estate must be properly administered when you pass away. Even if you do not think your estate is worth much, you should make a Will. Having a valid and up-to-date Will is the only reliable way to ensure that your estate (that is the things you leave behind), whatever it might be worth, goes to those you want. Your estate might actually turn out to be worth more than you think. Most people have superannuation, and superannuation funds often include life insurance which can turn out to be worth quite a bit of money. Your superannuation, including any life insurance, may be paid to your estate if you pass away. It would then have to be distributed and without a Will could end up with people that you did not want to benefit. I WON’T BE AROUND, SO I DON’T NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT. By taking time to make a Will (usually no more than an hour), you can save your family and friends uncertainty and stress. You will also save the extra legal costs that often have to be paid to finalise your estate. I move around with my job too much to make a Will. Who knows where I’ll be when it is needed? Once your Will is made, and subject to regularly updating it as necessary, you can move around anywhere without worry.

COSTS. Making a Will is expensive isn’t it? You can make your Will for as little as $330.00 including GST with Lisa Stansfield Lawyers. I HAVE ALREADY GOT ONE. I made my Will years ago, so I don’t need a new one You need legal advice to know how significant life events can affect your Will. Events that can affect your Will include: • marriage • starting a de facto relationship or a civil partnership (previously called a registered relationship) • separation and divorce, or the end of a de facto relationship or civil partnership (previously called a registered relationship) • the birth of a child, grandchild or other person you wish to include as a beneficiary in your Will • the death or incapacity of a family member or friend named as a beneficiary, executor, trustee or guardian in your Will • retirement • a change in assets or financial circumstances. You should review your Will regularly (at least every 3–5 years), and update it when things change to make sure it is valid and continues to reflect your wishes. I CAN DO IT MYSELF. I can write my own Will using a kit or write a note about what I want to happen. If you do not make your Will properly or do not have it witnessed correctly, a court decision might be needed to sort out the problem at great cost. A note outlining your wishes may not be recognised as a legally valid Will (unless a court, again at great cost, decides that it should be recognised). There can be additional costs, delay and stress for your family and friends dealing with incorrectly prepared Wills or notes outlining your wishes.

I get it. It’s a rock star car park. It’s right at the front door. It’s bigger, so there’s more distance between your paint work and heavy handed door openers. It’s a different colour so it stands out. Your car looks amazing parked there, all sleek and shiny. Your rims look too snazzy to be factory issue. Oh wait...now I see. The design on the rims matches the tracks shaved into your head! That’s clever. I also notice that you work out. I bet that with such an expensive car you can afford the yearly membership at the best gym in the city. That’s good because it saves you having to walk the extra 10 metres to the regular car parks. The thing is though that as good as your car looks there, it is actually in a Parents with Prams parking space. Now I’m by no means an expert on boot dimensions, but I’d hazard a guess that you’d be lucky to squeeze even the smallest of strollers in. The Paris Hilton doppelganger that exited the passenger seat seems too taut and perky to have born the fruits of your loins. I doubt that you are in the family way. I’m not rude. I don’t call you names. I just smile and let you know, in case you missed the sign. I don’t know what infuriates me more. Your shrug, or the smirk Paris gives as she looks me up and down, taking in my unkempt hair and the dried boogas on my pants. Either way, you seem to feel that it is not my job to ask you to move your car. Sorry mate, but it is my job to keep my kids safe. According to the Kidsafe Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia, pedestrian injury is a leading cause of child injury death. Every week a child pedestrian is killed, and for each child who dies as a pedestrian, 25 others will be admitted to hospital. Toddlers are most at risk of “drive-overs’, typically by a reversing vehicle. The sight of my little people jostling for prime position in the daisy chain might be bemusing, but it’s part of training them to be aware of themselves and their siblings around traffic. I need to

park as close as possible to the store entrance. Taking my children to the shopping centre is no picnic. There will be tantrums when requests for highGI sugar loaded treats are not indulged. There may be a melt down in aisle 5 because there is no fairy princess shampoo left and someone doesn’t want to smell like a dinosaur. They have been known to yell “Catch!” to unsuspecting passers by as they pelt apples. It takes a lot of self talk and positive affirmations to make it as far as the carpark, let alone the actual supermarket. Thankfully my youngest is still able to be strapped into a pram, and when I manage to snag the wider parents parking I don’t feel so much like a lemon in a garlic press, trying to squeeze in the partially opened door to release the car seat buckle. It is a small win in the scheme of things, but psychologically I’m one up.

With luxury and relaxation in mind we adopt a natural and eco approach to our beauty treatments. Natural, locally sourced product, raw and fresh ingredients and a simple, stylish aura of urban tranquillity

4053 2205

I don’t expect you to understand. There are no fines imposed for parking in Parents with Prams spaces. Maybe when you have to trade the coupe for a station wagon and are wiping vomit from the sultana encrusted upholstery then it may twig. In the meantime, by leaving these spaces for those that actually need them you are contributing to our emotional wellbeing. Oh, and I’m really sorry about your bumper. I’m not that good at reversing.

You may remember that well known adage – “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it’s yours…”. Well sometimes you just have to let your hairdresser go, in the confident knowledge that she’ll come back. Hayley Williams is back, and there’s a lot of clients very happy to see Ipseity, in Cairns Showground Shopping Centre, safe in the hands of this very popular hairdresser and her highly qualified and equally popular hairstylists. Ipseity, for those of you not in the know, means individual identity, that’s exactly what we, as clients, want our hairstylist to recognise and enhance. The relationship between hairstylist and client takes a little time, and a great deal of experience, to build and develop to the point where the client cannot imagine what they would do if the two parted company. That’s why Ipseity is proud to boast five senior staff, all qualified, and all keepers. Cairns born Hayley completed her hairdressing apprenticeship locally before starting her own hairdressing business, which she sold five years ago to start a family, much to the chagrin of her loyal clientele. “I bought Ipseity in January this year, and am delighted to have retained Kayla and Rochelle, both of whom have been here for some years,” says Hayley.

In the hustle and bustle of a busy shopping centre, Beautiloco is an oasis of calm, fragrant with the delicate aroma of the beautiful Voluspa candles. Under the soft lighting of a Himalayan salt lamp, this is a place where stress and troubles melt away. Erica Wright, who purchased the salon last year with her fiancé Anton McHeyzer, has poured her heart and soul into the creation of her dream and transformed Beautiloco Medi Clinic into a modern, holistic treatment centre specialising in skincare. Moving to Cairns as a teenager, Erica tells me she suffered from skin problems and is motivated by her understanding of how people can feel when they suffer from fixable skin concerns. After high school, Erica did a stint of hospitality before beginning her qualification as a beauty therapist and it was during her studies that she says “I found a passion for skin.” Erica has drawn on her job experiences in high volume salons as well as 5 star hotel spas, to create a haven to unwind and be pampered.

Aside from redesigning the salon Erica also took the opportunity to change over all the product lines. The Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup range was chosen for its high quality formula and

After gaining her ‘Miss Hannah’ title as a dancing teacher at Turning Pointe Dance Studios in Cairns, hairstyling took to the fore, as did her grandmother’s nickname for her, Hannah Berry. Hannah trained in her craft here in Cairns until she eventually decided to branch out into her own business, starting at home and then moving to a little shop in Minnie Street. After a very short while, the business outgrew the Minnie Street location, and took the opportunity to take over the current premises in the old Ambulance building in Grafton Street. “I walked in and knew exactly what I wanted to do – neutral, simple, rustic, reflecting our commitment to embracing natural beauty. “I’m extremely determined, It was very quick, we were still working in the Minnie Street salon on Thursday night, came in here and did the renovation on the Friday, and opened on Saturday,” laughs Hannah. The Hannah Berry Hair mission is to create innovative long lasting styles therefore only using the best products. As well as being a proud Wella salon, they also offer the 100% Australian Pure Hair Food range of hair products and accessories. “The Pure Hair Food products are paraben, sulphate and sodium chloride free, 100% Australian made and not tested on animals,” Hannah adds.

Hannah Berry Hair salon’s happy and creative team comprises three senior stylists and three apprentices, who fill the huge sun filled salon with the biggest smiles and the healthiest shining locks, both a great advertisement for the salon and its products. Sunlight streams into the front windows, lifting the mood and enhancing the natural décor. It’s pure in its simplicity, it’s pristine white and its natural. One long bench and equally long mirror run the full length of the salon welcoming you in as soon as you step foot in the door. It’s all at once trendy urban and rustic s i m u l t a n e o u s l y, very clean lines and very appealing. “In the early days, a lot of our clientele were my friends, now thanks to word of mouth our quickly growing clientele become our friends. One of the main differences about this salon is we believe communication is the key and do a really thorough consultation. “We continually put ourselves in the client’s shoes, about what they would want out of the hairdressing experience.” We believe our clients want a creative expert who will listen and make your satisfaction our priority. “And all our clients are offered a coffee or a little pot of tea, and my mum’s very special biscuits. They’ve become famous! Blayne Weir’s very own Berry Biscuits baked exclusively for the treasured clients of Hannah Berry Hair.

Maxine and Richard Hare from Edge Hill Newsagency started operating store syndicates about four years ago and now attract customers from all over the region, from the Atherton Tablelands to Innisfail in the south and Port Douglas to the north. “Syndicates greatly improve our customer’s chances of winning, of course. By pooling resources, you give yourself access to larger entries, a higher price ticket that becomes more affordable through the sharing, and consequently our customers have a far better chance of winning,” explains Richard. WINNING LOTTO SYNDICATES “All our store syndicates have 10 shares. If the syndicate wins, the prize money is shared equally among all the members of the syndicate,” adds Maxine. The Edge Hill Newsagency is one of the top 5 sellers of syndicates in Cairns, and has been among the top 15 for the whole of Queensland.

I SAW THE SIGN Words & photos by Silvia M o go ro vi ch

Walking into the workshop at Signline, is also walking into the colourful wonderland that Rick and Carla Burrell call home. My eye is immediately drawn to five huge venetian masks hanging from the mezzanine and around the purpose-built shed. The couple live on site in their “townhouse in a shed” as Carla calls it. Fifteen years after buying one of the first blocks of land in the South Cairns Business Park, they are more than happy with their big move. The spacious workshop has room for all of their specialised equipment, including a 6 metre long flatbed application table, as well as plenty of wall space to display a variety of signs and installations. There’s also Rick’s original signwall, which he uses when crafting handpainted signs. Having always had a flair for creating art, Rick began his apprenticeship in Darwin in 1979, and started Signline soon after completing his trade qualification. In 1988, Rick and Carla took off on a round Australia trip – Cairns was their first stop and they never left! “It’s the longest we’ve ever lived in one place!” Rick says. As a traditional signwriter (one of the few left in Cairns), Rick has continued with the art of gold leaf and pinstriping, and

although he acknowledges ‘It’s a dying art’, he has also noticed that there has been a resurgence of interest in traditional methods lately. He has seen an increase in the number of requests to replace vinyl lettering on Honour Boards with the traditional gold leaf, which not only looks better, but more importantly lasts much longer. Rick and Carla offer free no-obligation quotes for all manner of jobs, and can take you from a vague idea to a fresh new logo or an expansive roof sign. They are adept at asking the right questions to understand your needs and provide a solution within your budget and time constraints. They can design, construct and install all types of signs and stickers. Their sensitive professionalism has even seen them able to fulfil family requests for photos and messages to be put on the coffins of their loved ones. Absolutely everything is custom made by Rick and Carla and their small team of sub-contractors. They credit their local suppliers with being able to offer a quick turnaround on all but the most detailed jobs. And yes, the masks are for hire for your next event too!

When pets

From a box of praying mantises, to a fully-grown Adult Cassowary, they were also there to help when an injured frog needed to be flown to Cairns for emergency treatment! Darren and Sarah work closely with local animal rescue groups, generously providing support for those animals needing help. Animals move for all sorts of reasons, and Dogtainers Cairns not only assist with interstate and international travel, they also provide local transport in the Cairns area. “We work with our customers to tailor every animal move to their individual needs, we know it can be an anxious time so we spend the time to understand and offer the best possible solution for every move.” Animals travelling by air need to be contained in approved crates, and the locally owned franchise are able to offer a range of hire and purchase crates, and can also arrange custom-made crates for birds, reptiles or oversize dogs. Surprisingly, even hooved animals can be transported! As Darren says ‘We can transport any animal, anytime, anywhere in the world’. The health and safety of the animals is their top priority. This involves finding the shortest travel path, comfort stops for dogs to stretch their legs and have a sniff about, cats and birds have their cages cleaned and all the animals get a good drink of water. For longer trips, Darren and Sarah have also incorporated crate training, as it has proven to dramatically lower stress levels – especially helpful when your pet is a frequent flyer or travelling overseas. There are so many different restrictions regarding pet transport imposed by governments and airlines, that moving your pet can involve an avalanche of paperwork, but as Darren explains, “We know what all the rules and regulations are, and in international moves we can do everything to step

our customers through the process.“ This includes completing all the forms, organising the required vet checks, vaccinations and any necessary boarding arrangements. Sarah adds “If we can make it as easy as possible for people to make big transitions, then there’s one less thing they have to worry about”. Listening to Darren and Sarah, their passion for all animals is obvious. They both grew up with all sorts of animals around them, from the regular cats and dogs to the more unusual pets that only a farm can accommodate. Working together on the family farm down south has given them a balanced approach towards their business, and a thorough understanding of animal needs. This has flowed through to their teenage daughters, who are involved in the business and have gotten to know the regular travelers and other pets in transit who are brought to their home for some love and attention. Combining their passion for all animals with their knowledge about animal travel, it’s easy to see why Dogtainers Cairns really are the specialists in moving any animal, anywhere, any time!

Paula Wallace has been the managing director for Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises for half her life, taking on the leadership role in the family company at the age of 22. An easy sentence to write for an incredible journey that has seen the cruise company grow from transporting 200 people on the original boat to Green Island, to now providing for over 500 people each day on their Green Island, Harbour and Sunset Cruises. They have recently celebrated ten years of EcoTourism Certification Advanced, and have rightfully earned a place in the Tropical North Queensland Tourism Awards Hall of Fame, after winning the category of Major Tour & Transport Operator three years in a row. Twelve years ago the Wallace’s purchased Cairns Harbour Cruises, to expand their special brand of hospitality into tours of the inlet. Shortly after they added a Sunset Cruise on Fridays, as something fun and a bit different for people to do after work. Proving popular with locals and tourists alike, the Sunset Cruise was soon running every afternoon. Paula tells me, “The Sunset cruise is a great way to start your evening, most people would never have been so far along the Trinity Inlet waterways and seen how beautiful and remote it is and yet so close to Cairns city.”. The roomy and impeccably detailed boat fits 60 people easily, making it the ideal size to charter for an extra special party or work function. On a cruise to Green Island or on Trinity Inlet, you may even run into a celebrity, with visiting musicians travelling often under a sponsorship agreement with the Tanks Art Centre. Paula even spotted the cryptic crossword guru, Christine Lovatt heading out to Green Island a few years ago!

Being a lover of all things retro, I was thrilled to see a copy of CityLife magazine (an earlier iteration of CairnsLife) from November 2003 with Paula on the front cover - reading her story is like opening a time capsule. The title of the article was “Paula Wallace At The Helm of Big Cat”, I can only add that the course she has steered, through uncharted waters, has been a resounding success. Although Paula’s kids are more soccer kids than boating kids, it’s still very much a family business at Big Cat. Paula’s husband Steve and sister-in-law Kylie have continued working for the company since that article, and though not technically family, three staff celebrate 25 years of service in 2016 and another dozen have been working there for over 10 years. For someone who laughs easily when she says “I still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up!”, Paula Wallace not only seems like she knows what she is doing, but is having fun doing it, and doing it very well!

The interior of the new Stratford Medical Centre is bathed in natural light, white walls and attractive colourful décor enhancing the welcoming ambience reflected in the happy laughter of the reception staff. Walking in to the surgery is like walking out into the sunshine – very therapeutic. Dr Amanda Roberts tells me the Medical Centre is operating under a completely different model to the norm. “We bend over backwards to accommodate everyone on a daily basis. We block off time in every doctor’s day to cope with unexpected emergencies, so that any of our patients, particularly children with illness or injury, can be seen straight away. For example schoolchildren who injure themselves in the playground can be brought straight here, examined, sent for x-ray and return for treatment here in most cases, rather than sit at the hospital for hours, or if necessary will be sent to hospital as a priority referral We pride ourselves on taking time with all our clients. Everyone is important to us. We’re a family practice, run by locals, not a national business focused on profit above patients. “We’re all parents. Every single one of us, doctors and nurses, has children,” says Amanda. All the doctors here are highly competent in all aspects of general practice, with each doctor having his or her own special interests. “Charles loves all medicine, but has a special interest in allergies. “Amanda Blinco is a comprehensive all rounder, but she’s a legend when it comes to women and children’s medicine.

Some women don’t realise that they can see us for most of their prenatal and postnatal care, and just see the hospital or the obstetrician twice in the course of their pregnancy. “We handle fertility and contraception, pre conception care, sexual health, pregnancy monitoring, post-natal and well baby checks, vaccinations, post-natal depression screening, infant feeding and childhood nutrition, and childhood issues such as sleeping problems, anxiety, special needs’ assessment, and hearing and sight referrals. THE ART OF PERFORMANCE

CAR

LIFE Motoring

BORE by D av i d Le i t h

(Golf GTI Picture courtesy of Fastclassics.com)

The hot hatch… just caught fire! The hot hatch was undeniably invented in 1976 by the Germans with the original king of fast and small, the Golf GTi. Imagine the Bavarian surprise when, less than a decade later, their militant garlic-swilling neighbours took time out from national striking to wrestle that crown from their hands. Even with contenders from Japan, GM and every other conceivable corner of the car manufacturing world, the French have consistently managed to retain that status up to the present day. The constant reinvention of Citroens, Renault and Peugeot have boggled the mind - combining unnatural levels of torque forced through little front wheels, with innovative cabins and madcap exteriors. All this has been true, arguably, since the Peugeot 205 in ‘83 right through until the Citroen DS3 some 3 decades later. But, perhaps, as a reflection of their status as the industrial leaders of the EU (or simply bloody minded persistence!), it looks like the Germans have made a grab back for their stolen throne. Launched last year, the all new Mercedes A class was a car to be reckoned with - the baby Merc had everything from aggressive styling to a great array of standard options - not something that Teutonic motor makers have been famous for, historically. The most recent 2016 incarnation has been overlooked by some as merely a facelift revision and has

CairnsLife 67 Magazine

gone mostly unheralded, with only the motoring purists and avid Mercers making any comment. But tucked up at the top of the range is the new AMG nutter version the A45, replacing the outgoing sport model. Upping the power output, the MercedesAMG A45 4Matic, with its 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine now kicks out 280kW and 475Nm – up from 265kW and 450Nm. Not a great deal you may say - but hidden under the barely tweaked new bonnet lives a hive of new tech, now sufficient to propel this itty bitty shopping trolley a mind altering extra half second quicker from 0-100kph - getting it down to a time which until relatively recently was only the domain of supercars at 4.2 seconds. To be honest, this is ridiculous! A feat not easily repeated by any of its rivals - a real conquering of power over common sense! The AMG sound track that plays along with this little 2 litre is one of a petulant dragon playing the drums: growling, burbling and banging it’s way to incredible G’s, then popping on the overrun. All this will will set you back $77K and brand you as insane, having pedestrians leap for cover from your daily commute. Across the range, Mercedes haven’t completely left their counterparts behind, but with the A45 they have turned the hot hatch into a luxury, sporting, miniature growling snarling monster - not yet something available from their competition.

record first half sales Lexus has maintained its record-breaking sales success by achieving its strongest ever first-half result, surpassing the previous best in 2015. Lexus Australia chief executive Peter McGregor said the milestone underlined the consistent growth of the Japanese luxury marque in the local market. “Our brand achieved 25 per cent yearto-date growth this time last year, so to record further growth in light of that is a significant achievement,” Mr McGregor said. “It is a very clear indication that our dynamic product is hitting its mark in the competitive Australian luxury

market with excellent support from our dealer network.” Lexus model lines recorded strong results in the first half of 2016. NX turbo sales were up nearly 58 per cent on 2015, while sales of the CT 200h premium hybrid hatchback were up nearly 20 per cent. Sales of RX 350, the six-cylinder petrol variant of Lexus’ luxury midsize SUV, also increased by more than 23 per cent

on the 2015 figure. Mr McGregor said the results set down the foundation for the second half of the year ahead of 2017 when Lexus introduces further new product to the market including the LC luxury flagship coupe. “We are in a buoyant position as the new financial year commences, ready to keep up this impressive progress and momentum ahead of what will be a very exciting 2017,” he said.

Shaun O’Donahoo is the owner and manager of Strut Technology. Originally opening many years ago as a local franchise of a national company, Shaun struck out on his own, eventually rebranding as Strut Technology. Although the company does a lot more than just struts! They supply most of the fabricators from Cairns to Tully, and the Tablelands (even up to Thursday Island) with everything they need in the area of motor body hardware. There is a full range of products in store to supply all you need for commercial or DIY motor body hardware repairs or creations. There’s the renowned Korr Lighting products, the full range of Uni-Lock truck body hardware, as well as Dura-slide commercial drawer slides, as used by big companies like Norweld. But what really sets Strut Technology apart, is the knowledge and experience that 17 years in the business brings. Combined with the services of two special fabricators available to complete the installation process, Strut Technology is the complete supply partner to all facets of the motor body and fabrication industry. Cars, buses, trains, microwave ovens, boats, camper trailers – all avail themselves of strut technology and Shaun and his team can make the repair and replacement of struts, along with the application of LEDs, slides and locks, an easy and relatively inexpensive exercise. Shaun’s vast experience in the commercial motor vehicle industry has given him an edge in solving a myriad of problems and applications relevant to most commercial vehicles or camper trailers. Once your struts start becoming weak (you’ll notice your boot is closing itself, or your office chair is slowly sinking back towards the ground) give Shaun a

call to find out your options. Unlike those companies that need to get approval from head office, Shaun will replace struts under warranty the same day. A standard two-year warranty on new automotive struts, and 3 months on regassed struts brings with it a welcome peace of mind. Shaun is a firm believer in supporting local businesses and says “We’re personal and local and I want people to walk out of here happy!”. This attitude has helped him survive so long within this niche market. Being able to see and feel the products, as well as receiving the expert advice, can be much more cost-effective than choosing something cheaper from the internet with no warranty, and no support. Strut Technology currently operates out of 7a Newell Street, however, this month they are moving two doors down to number 3 Newell Street and will double the size of the shop. The new shop will also feature an interactive display on a Silverback Ute tray, to make it easier to visualise how their products will enhance your lifestyle. Come check out the new shop in August and let Shaun strut his stuff for you!

Education An education based on gospel values CATHOLIC SCHOOLS seek to live Gospel values and empower students with a code of behaviour based on Catholic moral principles and the teachings of the Gospels. It is with optimism and a deep sense of privilege and purpose that we prepare our students to engage with and make an authentic contribution to wider society. These core beliefs and values are reflected in Catholic schools’ pastoral care practices, their commitment to peace, social justice and service, and to the development of each student’s self-confidence, resilience and character. Communities of care Catholic education occurs in welcoming, inclusive, and connected communities. Our schools seek to provide a genuine, safe and caring experience of community, to encourage students to appreciate the intrinsic worth of who they are, to value diversity and treat each other with dignity, enabling them in turn to promote and respect the dignity of all. Safe and secure Our schools strive to provide an environment where students feel safe, secure and comfortable. Our schools and their leadership seek to ensure best practice in providing a safe and positive school environment where healthy relationships can flourish. Bullying, harassment and discrimination are not acceptable and all schools have established practices for managing unacceptable behaviour. An emphasis on respect for self and others results in the

disciplined and favourable learning and teaching environments for which our schools are renowned, and where students feel safe and welcome, and can achieve to the best of their potential. An educational partnership A Catholic education is seen as a partnership between students, parents, school and parish where parents and families are welcomed as members of the school community. Catholic schools encourage parents to be involved in all facets of school life and to actively support students in the full range of educational activities. Many opportunities exist for parents to form lifelong friendships and contribute to the life and development of their children’s schools through involvement with School Boards, Parents and Friends Associations and voluntary activities in school communities. Social and emotional wellbeing Students in Catholic schools are often described as “happy”. Our schools place great focus on the social and emotional wellbeing of all in their school communities. We recognise that success of any kind – learning or in life - is founded on the wellbeing of individuals, personally and in relationship with others. A life to the full Catholic schools emphasise personal and social development as fundamental enduring values and requirements in an everchanging world. This holistic care of students educates the whole child and provides

an educational foundation for life to the full - addressing spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, physical and cultural development. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of individuals and in the wider community by challenging our students to find meaning and value in their lives, and develop communal obligations and aspirations. Quality teaching and learning Catholic schools have long been known for their high standards. They strive for excellence in all that they do, encouraging students to use their Godgiven talents to reach their full potential. Our qualified, caring and dedicated teachers are one of the great strengths of our Catholic school communities. Catholic schools seek to provide a high-quality academic and vocational education for all their students, giving due emphasis to the fundamental literacy and numeracy skills required for both learning and life. They deliver the Australian Curriculum and offer broad curriculum and co-curricular options in well-resourced and equipped classrooms, with full ICT integration and all the requirements for contemporary learning in the 21st century. Welcoming to all Our Catholic school communities are inclusive places of learning, open to families and students from all walks of life and faith traditions who are committed to, and supportive of, the ethos of

Catholic Education and seek to embrace all that it offers. While enrolment preference is given to those of the Catholic faith, our schools also embrace those of other faith backgrounds as a wonderful opportunity to promote understanding and introduce all to the person and message of Jesus Christ, wherever they may be in their faith journey. Our schools are committed to fostering cultures of inclusion that respond to the educational needs of students regardless of their abilities, backgrounds and aspirations. Our school communities are places where the uniqueness and individuality of students and families is recognised and welcomed and the human dignity of each student is promoted. Fees and affordability Catholic schools are partly government funded, however reasonable parent contributions are essential to make up for the shortfall in government funding in comparison to state schools. However, based on gospel values and Church mission to care for the poor and marginalised, no child is denied a Catholic education based on the genuine inability of parents to pay school fees, in whole or part. Substantial fee discounts and exemptions are available in circumstances of genuine financial hardship. Expect more If you want more from your child’s education, consider a Catholic school for your child. Contact the Catholic school of your choice for further information and an enrolment application.

REVERSE AGING

BY SIMPLY ADDING PILATES Jan i ne N o o pet ch

Aging – We CAN make a choice to grow older while staying active!

Pilates is an amazing workout for the older generation, especially for those suffering from any arthritis, joint pain, loss of bone density and degeneration and those wanting to live out their later years as actively as possible. It is so important that as we age we keep our bodies moving – Its true if you don’t “USE IT” you will “LOSE IT” Pilates Reformer, Cadillac/Tower Classes are a great option as you are in a lying position which greatly supports you spine and gives you a low impact workout, working on elongating the muscles and putting your body through all planes of motion, all while building strength and endurance. You are also strengthening the bones, perfect to help prevent or slow down the effects of Osteoporosis and other degeneration. There is also a focus on breathing technique the entire session, getting that lovely oxygenated blood around the body, to the muscles and the brain, which can help improve memory. Breathing also works the pelvic floor muscles– helping

to strengthen them. Weakened Pelvic floors is not spoken about as much as it should be and is quite a problem especially for woman. The coordination of the exercises also has great benefits for training the brain, while the deep activation of the muscles helps improve the nervous system. It is surprising what can be achieved in as little as just 10 sessions. We tend to lose our posture as we age due to lack of core strength and not keeping up our flexibility. The muscles become tight – particularly the hamstrings, and hip flexors which then pulls your pelvis out of alignment. You then end up with aches and pains most often resulting in back pain or neck and shoulder pain As we look around closely at our older generation community, poor posture appears to be a large problem. (It is not just the older generation!) Joseph Pilates, creator of the Pilates Method (formerly known as “Contrology) said that if you are stiff and out of shape at 30yrs you are old, while someone who is supple and

strong at 60 yrs is young. By simply adding 1 -2 sessions of Pilates to your weekly schedule and working closely with a great Pilates instructor you will see an improvement in your core strength, which will then help protect your lower back and in turn help reduce back pain. You will be surprised how quickly your flexibility improves. Flexibility is SO, SO important as we grow older – the more flexible you are the better shape your blood vessels are in, along with keeping you active. It is quite remarkable how quickly you body responds, particularly if you have been active in your earlier life. Adding Pilates to your weekly routine will truly change how you live your life in your later years. Do you want to be more mobile and active, with less dependence on others? Then do the best thing for not only for your body, but also your mind and find a great Pilates studio near you. You will also meet some great people in your classes and create long lasting friendships. You will not regret it! Pilates is truly amazing for EVERYONE!

TESTOSTERONE IT’S NOT JUST SEX! Testosterone deficiency

• Diagnosed by a fasting blood test • Treated with replacement using capsules, skin patches, creams and gels and injections • Symptoms that are likely to develop from a low hormone level • Necessary to have a prostate check to exclude possible prostate cancer

As women grow older they reach a point in their lives called menopause when their hormone production decreases rapidly leading to a number of symptoms and consideration of hormone replacement. Men also have a decrease in their hormone levels which is more gradual from their peak in their 20’s and 30’s. The male hormone testosterone is mainly produced in the testicles and is carried through the circulation to have its effect. Testosterone levels may decrease by 1-2% per year. Approximately 10% of men aged 40-60 and 30% of men aged 60-80 have significantly decreased hormone levels. This is often accompanied by an increase in weight particularly fat around the abdomen. It is rather like the chicken and the egg as to which comes first. Decreased hormone levels can lead to an increase in weight. The increase in weight can also lead to hormones being taken up in the fat and therefore being less effective. The symptoms that are likely to develop from a low hormone level may be decreased libido (desire) and a reduced ability to achieve and maintain an erection. Physical symptoms consist of weakness, muscle and joint pains, thinning of bones (osteoporosis), sweating and hot flushes, dryness of the skin, reduced muscle mass and strength, abdominal obesity, breast enlargement and reduced body and facial hair.

98 Spence Street Cairns, QLD 4870, Australia PO Box 7787 Cairns, QLD 4870, Australia

Psychological symptoms may consist of tiredness, depressed mood, irritability, poor concentration and reduce short term memory. The ability to do crossword puzzles and carry out mathematical calculations may be reduced as well as an ability to follow directions on a map.

Testosterone deficiency is diagnosed by a fasting blood test measured on two separate days in the morning when the level is at its highest. It is also necessary to have a prostate check to exclude possible prostate cancer as hormone replacement may worsen the situation. In fact, reducing testosterone levels is one method of treatment for prostate cancer. While a number of men may show “normal” hormone levels it is impossible to know what the level used to be at its peak and therefore what the relative reduction might now be. Testosterone deficiency can be treated with replacement using capsules, skin patches, creams and gels and injections. If treatment is given then the man will require regular blood test follow-ups including prostate specific androgen (PSA) It is important to note that replacement of deficient levels is personalised and monitored. It will not have similar effects to massive doses of testosterone sometimes taken by some body builders. So called “testosterone rage” appears to only occur in men in whom extreme doses have been taken. Testosterone replacement may turn “grumpy old men” into “nice guys”.

Foot friendly option for

FNQ Heat

By Kyle Richardson

'I don’t want to wear orthotics. I only like wearing thongs or sandals because it’s too hot up here for enclosed shoes’. As a local Podiatrist, I hear this statement all the time and can completely relate – it really is hot up here! This is no longer an issue for the people of Far North QLD, with FNQ Podiatry & Orthotics latest product; the thong-thotic. Exclusive to FNQ Podiatry & Orthotics, the thong-thotic is a completely customized thong that is designed to fit specifically to your feet. Our Podiatrists run you through a biomechanical assessment, video walking analysis and pressure plate test in order to assess how your lower limbs and feet function. Once this is completed, a 3-D image is taken of your feet, for the custom insoles to be designed specifically for you. The pressure plate testing is used to determine if there are any ‘hot spot’ areas that have the potential to cause issues. If identified, a cut-out is able to be built into the

thong-thotic to deflect pressure from this area. The Thong-thotics are a great option for people who need extra support but don’t like wearing enclosed shoes all the time. Alternatively, people who already have orthotics are enjoying having the option of using the thong-thotics on weekends or for use around the house. For those people who suffer from heel pain first thing in the morning, the thong-thotics are fantastic to slide out of bed and straight into. That way your feet are getting the necessary support from the get go. The custom made thongs are available in both men’s and women’s, various colour options and are able to be claimed through your private health fund. Those people who already have standard orthotics, we do suggest bringing them along to your consultation as the design features can be taken into consideration pending how successful your results have been with them.

Silver Separation

SPL I T T I N G I N T H E GOL D EN YEA RS Suzanne Hadl e y

Separation and divorce amongst those of the Baby Boomer generation in their 50s and 60s has been dubbed “Grey Divorce,” but I prefer the less depressing term Silver Separation. Silver Separation is on the rise, with the average age of divorcing couples increasing over the last 25 years. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that the median age at divorce for males in 2014 was 45.2 years of age and for females 42.5 years of age. With the increase in life expectancy and Baby Boomers’ exuberant approach to life the typical post–retirement Baby Boomer can look forward to another 25 years of active life. It’s often post retirement, with an empty nest and more time with their spouse, they may find they don’t have a lot in common with the other party. Differences in values, routines, expectations and annoying habits are highlighted and can lead to deterioration in marriage. With a much longer life expectancy than their parents and certainly better health outcomes during that life expectancy, a common theme among older separating

parties is that they don’t have a lot of active time left to live in an unhappy relationship. While they don’t wish to hurt their family, once the children have left home, they want to start making decisions for themselves. An older couple is likely to have a complex retirement structure, perhaps a selfmanaged superannuation fund, share portfolios or where the parties have retired, income streams from defined benefit superannuation. Superannuation funds before retirement can be divided fairly as can the income stream from a superannuation fund once in the payment phase. A Silver Separation brings with it the need for an even greater emphasis to be placed on a negotiated outcome and the use of alternative dispute resolution methods before recourse to litigation, to preserve as much of the asset pool as practicably possible. It’s even more important to seek both financial and specialist legal advice about the best means to achieve a civilised division of assets, to avoid heading down the litigation path. More often than not the biggest assets available for division are the former family home and superannuation assets. As in the younger couple separating, the older couple face the same issues of whether to retain the home as a “trade off” for other assets. While it can be an emotional decision to

give up a long-time home, in the majority of cases, the most appropriate course is a sale of the former matrimonial home rather than leaving one party asset rich but cash poor. Retaining the family home brings with it the added burden of maintaining the home on a lower income. The silver lining of a Silver Separation is that it’s not going to have the same gut-wrenching child issues that younger couples may face, although many are concerned about protecting their children’s inheritances following separation, particularly if a new relationship is formed. In such circumstances, a financial agreement should be considered. The breakdown of any relationship is challenging, but in many ways, Silver separation presents the most difficult challenges all. Be sure to engage qualified advisers who recognise your unique position while assisting to ensure your financial stability in both the short and the long-term.

BUSINESS

How to STAND OUT from the crowd Eva Grabner

I am sure today’s job seekers are fed up hearing that they need to ‘stand out’. Many have no idea what that means or where to even start. It’s a complex world right now and job hunting can be hard work. I addressed this in a recent blog “Job Hunting is a Sport”. Recently in a local paper there was a front page article about an ‘older’ gentleman who claims he couldn’t find work because employers were ageist. I immediately contacted the journalist that wrote this and gave my feedback. Namely, I am sure this person’s resume was not ‘standing out’ or written correctly, nor was he doing the right things to secure a job. I offered my services FOC to try and help. Once I spoke with the job seeker, there were a number of factors that stood out for me. 1. His resume needed work. 2. He was extremely inflexible with regards to working hours (he had a parttime job that he enjoyed but resulted in him being available for only a small amount of hours each day) and 3. His attitude; he was fed up and disheartened. It was nothing to do with his age (not that I could find anyway). I understand how difficult and de-motivating the job hunt can be. Applying to hundreds of job applications then only hearing from a handful of them and in most cases receiving next to no feedback. But you need to remain positive, you need to ensure you have the best resume and you need to be flexible. Here are some tips that I hope will help you: • Find a good recruiter. A recruiter that you can form a relationship with, one that will give you direct and consistent feedback and one that will know you inside and out and represent you well. This may take a bit of time as there are many transactional recruiters out there, but there are also many good recruiters who will work with you to secure that ideal job. • Be yourself. Be authentic. Employers, and especially recruiters, are immediately suspicious of people who respond to questions in a rehearsed or wooden way. Let your personality shine. Be prepared to tell your recruiter or potential employer about your

capabilities and passions (professionally of course!); what gets you excited and what motivates you. Let your guard down a little. Trust me; you will stand out as a result. • Follow up. The biggest part of job hunting is getting an ‘in’. Securing that first interview. Follow up your application with a phone call or LinkedIn message asking to meet them regardless of whether you were successful for that particular role. You will stand out in their mind and be foremost when they recruit again. • Make sure your resume is easy to follow and includes all your relevant employment information. I cannot stress this enough. If necessary go to a professional resume writer that has a good reputation. Do you homework as it can be expensive, but it’s worth it to have a top quality resume that effectively sells your accomplishments and skills. • Be professionally and positively visible in social media, particularly LinkedIn. This is essential now as many future employers will look through their online contacts first before advertising a role. Be active. Like articles of interest and follow relevant people. Be professional at all times as if you online footprint is consistent and engaging your resume and LinkedIn profile can help get you in the door for a job interview. I sincerely with you the best of luck and would love to hear about your success stories. My next blog will be about working with recruiters. I will give you an overview of the types of recruiters out there and how to ensure you develop a strong working relationship with the right ones.

As visa regulations are relaxed and previously war-torn and unstable countries, are returning to their former glory and beyond, the Eastern area of Europe and its surrounds have slowly risen to the top of many people’s destinations when looking for that something a little different. With excellent flight connections into these areas from mainland Europe, there’s really no reason to look elsewhere. As well as the already ‘discovered’ countries such as the Czech Republic and it’s stunning capital Prague or Russia, with it’s historic Moscow and arty St Petersburg, you have the new kids on the block such as Croatia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Serbia & Montenegro. The unspoilt area of northern Croatia is a great place to start. You can rent a villa, escape the crowds and grab yourself a taste of stunning old-world Europe. Just a short distance away from Venice, across the Adriatic, lies Istria on the Gulf of Kvarner. An old Venetian colony

before Napoleon grabbed in it 1797, it’s survived the Communist dictatorship of Tito and the war in the early nineties, to offer wonderful coves and pebble beaches surrounded by the world’s cleanest waters, along with stunning views and backdrops as you drive on the cliff-hugging freeways through limestone mountains. A must-do is a visit to ancient walled town of Rovinj, which the locals will claim, rivals the more famous Dubrovnik in the south. The beautiful cobbled streets that lead you to the baroque cathedral of St Euphemia, are a prelude to sitting back with a ‘pivo’ (beer) or latte in hand, as the sunsets over the Adriatic. Then it’s off to one of the many local ‘konobas’ (the local restaurants), where the speciality is ‘cevapcici’ (spicy meatballs). Croatia is fast becoming a gourmet’s delight and is already the subject of many gourmet tours from London and beyond. Within easy reach of this area is also the small township of Pula with its beautifully preserved Roman amphitheatre and

sparkling harbour, the seaside resort of Crikvenica where ‘gelato’ tasting is a must, and the spectacular hilltop location of Motovun where artists, musicians and locals mingle. The islands offshore are also said to be every bit as beautiful as those much more widely known in Greece. If you have time to explore this blossoming country in full, then you certainly should take advantage and see it in detail. You can then combine it with a visit to the peaceful, rolling hills and soaring Alps of Slovenia, including its unforgettable capital, Ljubljana. Or perhaps Serbia & Montenegro, part of the old Yugoslavia. Moving forward and reforming after all its political unrest, it’s a region packed full of culture and ‘waiting to be discovered’ beauty. So, when next looking at exploring Europe, come off the beaten track a little and give yourself a new insight into what there is on offer. You’ll be more than thoroughly rewarded!

LIFE Women in Finance

Women in

FINANCE

It makes sense that we have such exceptional women in the field of finance, now that the gender restrictions of the past are a fading memory, as aside from the minimum requirement of having a head for numbers, the commonly regarded feminine traits of communication, multi-tasking, and empathy are ideally suited to this industry. All the women in this feature have shown their tenacity in achieving success in a historically male-dominated business, and are role models for our young people both boy and girl alike. With a wealth of experience behind them, these women have broken through the glass ceiling and garnered the respect of their community by the quality advice they offer, their commitment to their clients and knowledge of all aspects of financial services – not only mortgages and loans, but also wealth creation, insurance and commercial needs. With the proper guidance of an accredited financial advisor, you can begin your path to a secure financial future.

Karen Donato Helping people live the lives they dream about is what Finance Broker Karen Donato of KD Financial does best. Karen, who has been in the finance industry since 1988, knows the industry inside and out. She holds a Certificate IV in Financial Services (Finance/ Mortgage Broking), a Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Broking Management and is an accredited Mortgage Broker with the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA). Her extensive experience, including working as a Lending Officer for one of Australia’s major financial institutions, and her long-standing respected reputation among the major banks and money lenders enables her to source the best possible financial options for her clients, saving them money and giving them peace of mind. “As a Broker, I don’t act for the banks,” she said. “I act for the clients and get the very best rates and loan terms

for them, which often saves them thousands of dollars on charges and interest rates.” Karen has helped thousands of clients. Whether it’s a mortgage or personal loan, finance for commercial or business needs or financial help for the selfemployed, Karen makes it her mission to help her clients turn their dreams into reality.

“It’s such a great feeling helping people achieve their financial goals,” the born and bred Far North Queenslander said. “While it has famously been said that money won’t bring you happiness, it sure makes realising your goals and dreams that much easier.” CL

Morene Rumble Seventeen years ago, with significant sales and management experience under her belt, Morene Rumble quickly established a name for herself in the motor industry, her expertise seeing her head hunted for positions in dealerships throughout the Far North. But Morene is a people person and eventually tired of being a transaction-based person, writing and closing deals. “I’m passionate about helping people and building enduring relationships, and Astute Finance allows me to apply my experience and expertise to a wider audience needing my help, not just those looking at purchasing cars. “Call me old fashioned, but when I first meet a new client, I prefer to let them do all the talking and I sit back and listen. That’s the best part of my job, getting to know every aspect of my client so as to best service their holistic needs. “Now I’m providing a lifestyle, whether it’s a boat, jet ski, motorbike, caravan, solar energy, business start-up, large machinery, or consolidating debt. Helping people to achieve their goals and dreams is not

just a statement, it’s a value that extends to my core. “Being constantly in touch with what’s happening in the world of finance translates to finding simple straightforward solutions for my clients and guiding them through the inevitable obstacles. “My business growth is almost entirely attributable to repeat and referral. I’ve been in the industry long enough to build a reputation on integrity, trust and sound advice, gaining the respect of other Industry professionals along the way. “My business partner Donnie Martin and I have worked together for over a decade and we complement each other. I’ve always had someone by my side to guide me, and highly recommend an effective mentoring program for self- development. I like to align myself with people who are driven with the people who a driven with the same positive mindset and most of all who absolutely love what they do. Lainie Poon

A background in hospitality and finance, and business ownership results in customer service being deeply ingrained in Lainie Poon’s ethos. As mortgage broker/manager at Kelly Wealth Lending Services, Lainie’s professionalism is immediately evident, but equally it is very obvious that Lainie is a ‘people person’ and passionate about helping her clients improve their wealth, particularly women. Lainie is the driving force behind Kelly Wealth’s, Creating Wealthy Women Seminar. “We were overwhelmed by the response, which showed us that women in Cairns want to take control of their financial future. It was all about empowering women with education and tools to make them confident and informed to make financial decisions. “We are really looking forward to running the next event,” said Lainie. Lainie has a passion to make sure all her clients have the very best experience. From the first meeting, every client is treated like a friend. Where this may sound trite, in Lainie’s case, it’s a simple fact.

“The best part of my job is when I call a client and tell them yes, their loan is approved, or their property has settled.”

“It gives me a real buzz knowing a client is on their way to achieving their financial dreams,” says Lainie. Lainie’s commitment to client satisfaction is demonstrated in client survey results. “I’m very proud of the ‘100% satisfied’ feedback we receive from customers, and regular referrals. And that’s what our business thrives on. People like to be referred to someone they know they can trust, especially with something as personal as obtaining finance,” Lainie says.

Kelly Wealth Lending works alongside the financial planners at Kelly Wealth Services. “When people come through our door, they know we can address financial planning and mortgage needs holistically, but by the same token, we can handle one or the other separately and expertly. “I operate under the licence of a boutique brokerage in Melbourne called Acceptance Finance and they have been ranked as one of the five top independent brokerages. They’re not part of a big franchise and we are well looked after individually and collectively. “This means we have the combined expertise to find solutions for almost any client from any background with any need or problem. The team at Acceptance get together for regular professional development days where we share information, and that means I am always up to date, always receiving information as early as possible. I’m constantly developing my knowledge. “I have access to a panel of lenders and I need to be accredited with those lenders in order to sell their products. The way I see it is that all these lenders from the majors to the small boutique lenders are all competing for my clients’ business. I’m there to get the best rate and costs and structure for each client. We’re all about matching the client with the product most suited to them,” says Lainie.
