From troubled Africa, to temporary exile in Egypt, and all the way to Tasmania; Ajak Kwai’s story is much more than just music; it’s one of inspiration and hope. Born in a small town called Bor in the Malakal Region of the Upper Nile in South Sudan, Ajak was exiled from her home country due to civil war. After spending eight years in Cairo with no home to return to, Ajak found refuge in Australia under the Humanitarian Aid Program. As a young adult in her mid-twenties, Ajak migrated to Hobart and joined a small Southern Sudanese community before immersing herself into study including an AMES English language course and accounting studies at TAFE. During her studies, an occasion arose where class members were organising a ceremony and asked if anyone could sing. Ajak obliged, and they asked her to sing some more. The rest, as they say, is history. Music was a natural career path for Ajak. Growing up in a musical family in South Sudan, music was central to her way of life, and intrinsic to her cultural heritage. She sang at all the village ceremonies and celebrations, later joining a local missionary choir that sang gospel music in their own Dinka style. “Music has always been part of my life,” Ajak says. “When I was younger I had challenges with my speech and I found music to be the tool to express myself. Growing up in Sudan as a young child we would sing traditional gospel songs.” In addition to her Dinka tribal language, Ajak also sings in Arabic and English. The songs she sings are very close to her heart, inspired as they are by her continuing love and hopes for her homeland and through her concern and sadness for the ongoing civil war still raging in Sudan. “I’m not a politician,” she says. “But music can take your message places. I want people to have a taste of what Sudanese music is like and to share my culture and stories through my music.” Ajak’s music is soulful, yet powerful, playful yet purposeful; her lyrics littered with inspiration and strong storytelling. Her performances are filled with vibrant sounds and her distinctive voice has mesmerised audiences nationally and internationally. In 2014 Ajak was awarded the African-Australia Community Female Singer of the Year. “My storytelling through my music looks to convey peace; for us to live in harmony with one another through love,” Ajak says. “I hope my music breaks any fear that people have in welcoming and engaging with different groups of people. The key message being that regardless of our differences, we are all capable to love and live peacefully.” Don’t miss Ajak Kwai when she plays at the Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 22 September as part of the 2017 World Music series. A COOL TRANSFORMATION JA D E C OSM ET IC AN D WELLN ESS C LI N I C

A non-surgical way to permanently eliminate fat? No diet. No exercise. Sound too good to be true? CoolSculpting® is the world’s #1 non-invasive fat-reduction procedure. With more than 4 million CoolSculpting® treatments performed worldwide, it is the breakthrough way to contour your body by freezing and eliminating unwanted fat with no downtime. CoolSculpting® was developed by Harvard University Medical Scientists in 2005 after 20 years of research and is based on a scientific innovation called Crylipolysis which is a method of freezing and killing fat cells through targeting specific areas on the body in a treatment that takes about one hour. Most clients will relax and watch a movie or catch up on emails, with the initial discomfort from the cold only lasting a few minutes. Lisa Price, owner of Jade Cosmetic and Wellness Clinic said, “CoolSculpting® is a medically proven way to achieve permanent fat reduction and sculpt the body, targeting those stubborn areas of body fat. This technology is a great alternative for those who do not wish to undergo surgery. The most common areas we treat are bulges around the waist and bra line on females and love handles on men”. It is Jade Cosmetic and Wellness Clinic’s pursuit of the best technology for their patients that has led to them becoming one of the top 8 clinics in Australia to offer this technology and the only clinic in Far North Queensland.

CairnsLife 37 Magazine

“Regardless of age, gender and body type, we all seem to have an area where we would like to reduce unwanted pockets of fat” says Lisa. “Some patients respond very well to just one treatment and others may need several treatments. The best results are achieved with soft, pinchable fat. If someone has hard, fibrous tissue it will be difficult to give them the WOW factor.” Having treated over 300 patients, the success is measured by the number of patients who have return to treat other areas of the body.

“We love this technology” LISA SAYS. “A body can be totally resculpted using CoolSculpting®. It can be used on most areas of unwanted fat from the chin down. Most patients require only one treatment and by eight to ten weeks they can see the finished result.” Because every person is unique, Jade Clinic offer a complimentary consultation with a CoolSculpting® trained specialist who will determine if CoolSculpting® is right for you. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual to ensure that they receive a result that they love. To book your complimentary consultation call Jade Cosmetic and Wellness Clinic on 4041 0067 or email the team at info@ jadecosmeticclinic.com.au or visit them at their new clinic at 281 Pease Street, Edge Hill.

As St Joseph’s was built on funds generated through the generosity of parishioners of the time as well as the weekly Bingo in the hall, we are dedicating a night to honour all volunteers both past and present.

Cairns’ oldest operating Catholic Primary school, St Joseph’s in Parramatta Park turns 90 this month, and like any 90 year old will be celebrating in style with a week of events, loved ones, and a massive cake of course!

are dedicating a night to honour all volunteers both past and present. This is the ‘Night of Chance’ which consists of Bingo and Trivia and for only $15 per head, and a BYO food and drinks, it will be a great night of fun for all,” said Mr Rick.

In 1927, the Sisters of Mercy established St Joseph’s School, and have been a major influence in the teachings and practice of the school since that time. St Joseph’s is an icon of Cairns and has a rich history, being ‘the school across the tracks’ which was opened to service the people who lived in this part of town. Throughout the past 90 years, it has evolved and continued to meet the needs of the Cairns community and is today, a place of quality and innovative education.

“Life is meant to be celebrated and so in that vein, we are kicking up our heels on Saturday night with a ‘Night to Re-Unite’ which is open to all past and present school families and staff and anyone associated with the school. With a live band, drink on arrival and finger food for only $45 per head, it will be a night to remember.”

“The 90th celebrations have been designed to cater for a wide range of people with a student focused day on Friday the 18th of August. The community will gather for Mass, followed by a community morning tea and picnic. Our classrooms will be open for visitors to tour as we showcase the story of St Joseph’s,” explains Gavin Rick, Principal of St Joseph’s School. During the week of celebrations, St Joseph’s will be conducting a tree planting ceremony and the community will be involved in a ‘kindness rock’ art installation. Each member (child and adult) will design a rock to be made into a tiled mosaic which will then become part of the new school pathway and gardens. “As St Joseph’s was built on funds generated through the generosity of parishioners of the time as well as the weekly Bingo in the hall, we

“We culminate the event on Sunday morning with a Parish Mass, followed by a morning tea and open school. Again, families and those associated with the school can come along and relive their days at St Joseph’s and see what the future has in store.” The rich and colourful history at St Joseph’s have laid firm foundations for the educational revolution on which the school are currently embarking. The school are transforming into a future school, with a focus on developing students, staff, and parents as learners who are inspired to improve humanity in the spirit of the mercy tradition. The new innovative school is due for completion in February 2018, will be a sacred place welcoming all. Principal, Gavin Rick said, “We invite the Cairns community to be a part of our celebrations and urge those wanting to come along to any of the events to contact the school on 40 514 041, visit the website, or find us on Facebook. We’d love to see you there!”

TO CONTRACT OR NOT? E VA GR A BNE R Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88

Contracting is one of the fastest growing employment arrangements in Australia and around the world according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics; independent contractors along with temporary and casual workers account for over 28% of the Australian workforce. In a 2013 survey they noted that there were nearly 11.6 million employed persons aged 15 years and over. Of these, just under 1 million were independent contractors, over 2.2 million were employees without paid leave entitlements and just over 1 million were considered ‘other business operators’. But what are the benefits to the individual and to the company thinking of employing them? Most businesses will employ a contractor to perform tasks that are only required seasonally or for short periods of time. For example, businesses may require contractors to cover particularly busy periods such as end of financial year or Christmas or just to cover whilst sourcing a full-time employee. But what are the pros and cons in becoming a contractor and why would you consider it at all? Better pay Contractors are usually, but not always, paid more for their work because they are often employed on a shortterm basis. Rates can increase even further when skills are in short supply or projects need to be completed at short notice. Flexibility The ability to work on different assignments and companies which can provide you with a wealth of experience plus getting involved in new and exciting projects can appeal to those who get bored easily or find routine mundane. Independence This could be considered a pro if you are looking to travel or further your education between assignments or it could be a con if you need to be earning an income on a regular basis. Contracting not also gives you the ability to be more selective with who you choose who you work for, but it also, in most situations, have minimal concern for office politics which is favorable to those who prefer to simply go to work, to work! Education Working in different companies allow contractors to gain exposure to a multitude of business practices and operating systems. Although adjusting to new technologies may prove challenging in the short term, it can prove highly beneficial in the long term. Those who can adapt and change to match their new environments are more appealing to prospective employers. Lack of Stability As a contractor, you must be prepared to be constantly

‘job hunting’. There is no guarantee as a contractor that your role will become full-time or that your contract will be extended. Contractors are usually the first people cut during a tough time so we recommend that you start scanning the horizon for new project opportunities a few months out from your current contract’s completion date. Investing time in networking is important in securing consecutive contracts with minimal or no waiting period but can take a lot of motivation and diligence on your part. High Expectations Employers usually hire contractors to complete an important or time sensitive project and contractors are often expected to be fully capable and equipped to perform without requiring any additional training. You must be prepared to jump into the deep end and this can be quite demanding to some. It may also require a lot of self-teaching and up-skilling in your own time. Benefits Although contractors get paid more than a full-time employee, they lose out on the benefits of vacation and sick pay. You must be able to budget for times when you are not working and preparing for times that you may go months without work. Finally, if you are a sociable person, contracting may be a little lonely as you may be left out of employee outings and events due to being the ‘temp’, however, this can also appeal to some! If you think contracting is a good path for you, be sure to consider the benefits and challenges but ultimately it will come down to your own individual circumstances and preferences. The team at Elite Executive would be happy to discuss the benefits of contracting with you or if you are an employer; whether a skilled and efficient contractor could ultimately assist you in the long term.

DO IT FOR THE KIDS ….PART 2 NAR D IN E CO L L I ER

Last month I wrote about the benefits of trying mediation to resolve family conflict. That includes sorting out property. There might be debate about what’s more important, sorting out the conflict about your kids or sorting out how to divide your property, but whatever your view is, there is no doubt that until you sort out how to fairly divide your property following separation, you can’t move on. I never really understood it, until I separated from my long term partner. Talking about losing everything you’d worked so hard for, was so distressing! Losing your financial security…having to start again…it really is horrible. There are so many good things about mediation but what I think is the best thing about property mediation is the ability to take the emotion out of it. It’s a financial transaction at the end of the day, it’s not about whether someone had an affair or why the relationship ended. Preparation for a property mediation (and how you can save money on legal fees!)

Nardine Co l l i er i s a n a c c r e d ite d Specialist in Family Law, a Nationally Accredit ed med i at o r a n d h a s b e e n mediating f ami l y l aw d is p u te s fo r o ver 20 years. (By the way, this is also a handy checklist to go through before your first appointment with your lawyer in property cases). In a property case, you need to get together all the information about your current financial position, in order to give it to the other party. Yes – they have to do the same! It’s called disclosure and it means everything about your financial position has to be disclosed. The starting point in any property matter is always – what do you own and what is it all worth? How much do you owe, and to whom? Drilling down from that information, is whether you own it jointly or not, did you own it before you got together, whether debt is joint or not, how is debt secured, and so on. But to start with, get together a list of your assets and liabilities. Include everything you can think of – and it does include superannuation – and find out what it is worth.

How do you find out what it’s worth? Firstly – its current values not what it was worth at separation. For real property (houses etc) get a real estate agent to give you an appraisal. It will do to start with and it’s free. For cars, bikes etc go to www.redbook.com.au or similar or take it to a dealer locally. For Boats, caravans etc, look online at sales or take it to a dealer locally. Get a printout of all bank accounts – credit and debit, mortgage, etc. Get a current value for any shares or other investments. ( Note - Life Insurance isn’t an asset unless it has a payout value before you die!) For superannuation, the most recent statement will do but ideally see if you can get a current balance. For furniture, it’s a second hand value not replacement value and don’t get too excited about it, it’s often worth much less than you think! Try and come up with a global value. And so on. Valuing a company and/or business is a bit more involved and may require a formal valuation. To start with obtain the last 3 years of financial information. Your accountant might also be able to give an estimate of value. List every asset and every liability and how it is owned – jointly or solely - and for debts, whether there is anything secured against that debt. Lastly, details of your income from all sources. Getting all of this information together will save your lawyer time - remembering, a lawyer’s time is your money. It is also what you both need to do before the mediation. There are helpful forms on the family court website – www.familycourt.gov.au a “financial statement kit.” And “Balance sheet” – The Balance sheet is a good place to start. A more detailed fact sheet with this information is on our website along with the forms. M: 0428 526 568 P: (07) 4212 5666 E: nardine@collierlawyers.com.au W: www.collierlawyers.com.au

THE POWER OF PR BENEFITS OF EMAIL MARKETING

D ANA E J O NE S

LIFE Business I was chatting to a small business owner the other day who was convinced that email marketing was dead and buried and that people were disengaged with email communication these days. I presented a different point of view to this business owner as I didn’t agree – Why? Because that is not what the current research is telling us and I’ve seen the results first hand. eCommunications is actually one of the most cost effective, results driven mediums that a business can utilise. Let me share with you a little of what I know on this subject and I’ll let you be the judge. When it comes to marketing your business, it’s important to be where your consumers are. Email use is thriving more than ever before and is used by 95% of online consumers. More people are using their tablets, smart phones and laptops each day and are constantly connected to their email and social media accounts.

Danae Jo n es i s Pr in c ip a l o f P R & Market i n g f i rm D a n a e J o n e s Consu l t i n g e: da nae@ d an aej o ne s .c o m .a u w: www. d an aej o n es .c o m .a u

Email Communication gets to people, no matter where they are – at work or at home because we are literally glued to our devices in this fast paced life. 91% of consumers reported checking their email at least once a day (Exact Target). In fact, it’s not uncommon for consumers to check their email dozens of times each day. According to the Founder of Mobile Digital, John Stuckey - “People would rather give up drinking than their phone.” Using email marketing to promote content and your products and services is a great way to drive more traffic to your website and is a highly effective tool for nurturing leads through the buying cycle. The key is making your eCommunication content interesting, informative and meeting the needs of your target market. I always use the 80/20 rule. 80% information, and only 20% sell. What people are desensitised most to these days is being overtly sold to. The Stats Speak For Themselves 60% of digital media is now consumed on a mobile device 66% of email recipients made at least one purchase last year based on a promotional email 7 in 10 people say they made use of a coupon or discount from a marketing email in the prior week For every $1 spent, $44.25 is the average return on email marketing investment. 82% of consumers open emails from companies Email marketing spend grows 10% year on year (Sources: Exact Target, 2012 Blue Kangaroo Study, Experian, Litmus and Forrester)

CairnsLife 49 Magazine

7 Benefits of Email Marketing 1. A very simple cost effective way to relate with your publics in ‘real’ time They say it takes at least seven touch points before a consumer will make a purchasing decision. Email communication is a noninvasive way of remaining ‘in touch’ with your community of existing and potential customers. 2. Strengthens Relationships, Loyalty & Trust Email marketing is a great way to build one-on-one relationships with current and potential customers. By creating wellwritten and engaging newsletters and emails, readers get to know, like, and trust you and your company. 3. Increases Brand Awareness & Keeps Your Brand Top of Mind Each time an email is sent to consumers it is building brand awareness of your company, products and services and it reinforces your value proposition. This helps to keep your company’s name top of mind. 4. Be Ultra Targeted With Segmentation With email marketing, lists of each market segment based on demographics, interest, buying patterns, industry groups etc can be created, enabling you to craft a marketing message that speaks directly to each audience and meet their specific need. 5. Low Cost & Good ROI Compared to other marketing channels, email marketing costs very little. For every $1 spent, $44.25 is the average return on email marketing investment. 6. Easy to Execute Setting-up an email campaign is relatively easy. There are many email marketing resources and software companies online that enable you to DIY. But to really stand out, instead of using a pre-made template, I recommend having an email template custom designed consistent with your company branding so your touch point is given maximum impact. Making sure it renders correctly in all email programs is essential also so engaging a professional that knows how to do this is paramount if you do not have the skills in house. 7. Easy to Measure The majority of email marketing software programs have analytics at the back end of every email you send. So you can very effectively track the metrics and report on your open rates, click-through rates, bounce emails and conversion rates. This information is key to understanding what is working and what needs improvement. Email marketing is a highly effective public relations tool that needs to be given significant consideration when developing your marketing strategy.

AT WHAT AGE DO I QUALIFY FOR AN AGED PENSION? G RAHA M K O CH

If you said 65, you may be correct but not for long.

a person to receive the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.

My friend at Centrepoint Alliance, Mark Teale, has done a bit of work on this and so as not to reinvent the wheel, I have reprinted it below.

Effectively, the government has forcibly deferred any persons born after July 1 1952 retirement by anywhere up to 2 years.

From July 1 2017, for those people born after July 1 1952, from age perspective for the age pension you will need to be 65 and a half to qualify. Put very simply, if you were born on June 30 1952 you would qualify for the age pension depending of course on your circumstances at the age of 65. However, if your mum was a couple of days late giving birth and you were born after July 1 1952 you will have to wait until you are 65 and a half. The following table will give you an idea of the changes to the qualifying age for age pension, which will take place over the next 7 years;

G raham Ko ch i s M an a g in g D ir e c to r o f KIB G ro u p w i t h o v e r 4 0 y e a r s e xpe rien ce i n t h e f i n a n c ia l p la n n in g a nd insu ran ce i n d u s tr y

If your birthdate is:

You’ll be old enough at:

1 July 1952 to 31 December 1953

65 years and 6 months

1 January 1954 to 30 June 1955

66 years

1 July 1955 to 31 December 1956

66 years and 6 months

From 1 January 1957

67 years

This, of course, does not take into account any possible changes in legislation, which may happen over the next 7 years. Do remember the original proposal was to introduce a qualifying age of 70. It is important to remember that this increase in the qualifying age for age pension will also flow through to qualifying age for

A bad thing? I am sure everyone’s opinion will be different but I think it is important to remember a couple of very salient facts. In 1909, when the age pension was introduced with a qualifying age of 65, the average life expectancy for a male in Australia was 56 years of age. Today the average life expectancy of a male in Australia is 79 years and 83 years for women. If my math is correct based on the 23year increase in the male life expectancy, representing a 41% increase and applying the same principal to the original qualifying age of 65, today’s qualifying age to apply for the age pension should be – a frightening – 91.65 years! Of course, there is a multitude of other issues which need to be considered. But, the reality is that the small increase of 2 years introduced over a six and a half year period is not the end of the world. For most of us, the need to continue to work for a couple more years will no doubt be beneficial from not only a wealth position but I do believe from a health perspective as well. In the meantime, consult a financial planner because with some smart planning, hopefully you will not need to worry about filling in the application. WAS IT A LOAN OR WAS IT A GIFT? HOW DOES THE FAMILY COURT TREAT DEBT OWED TO FAMILY MEMBERS? SU Z A N N E H A DL E Y

It is not uncommon for family members, such as parents or other siblings to lend money to parties during their relationship. The majority of these loans rely on trust and the relationship between the family members involved, rather than formal documentation, for repayment. Such loans can include parents helping adult children purchase their first home, investment by family members in a new business being established by another family member or perhaps siblings lending funds to cover a short-term emergency for another sibling. What happens if the relationship breaks down? Can these loans ever be taken into account? When considering a property division, the Court looks at all of the assets and liabilities of the parties. Quite naturally where one of the parties has a significant debt owed to their parent or sibling under one of these unsecured loans, there is an expectation that the debt will be taken into account, and an adjustment made to enable its repayment. There is almost always an expectation by the lender that this debt will be taken into account. The Court will take a genuine loan into account in an asset division decision. But how does the court decide whether the loan is a genuine debt or simply a strategy by one of the parties to lessen the value of the assets available for division? The question of whether the money was a loan or a gift is determined by the evidence available to the court. Some of the evidence the court looks for includes written evidence such as loan

documentation outlining the amount of loan whether there is interest payable and the terms for repayment. Where there is no such formal documentation, if the evidence demonstrates the parties have always treated the debt as a legal obligation, then it is more likely to be taken into account as a genuine loan. If the evidence of the parties is vague, this may lead to the court concluding that the debt would not have to be repaid, therefore allowing the court to distribute the assets of the parties without any regard to the third party interest. The court will only come to this decision after examining the evidence and the particular circumstances of the case carefully. In a very recent case, although formal documentation existed of a $192,000 loan from the husband’s parents to the husband and there was evidence of that money going to accountant of the husband’s parents, there was no evidence that money actually made its way into the husband’s hands. The terms of the alleged loan agreement were so vague that the court concluded that there was no requirement that any money was to be repaid. The debt was disregarded in the property division. The way the court has treated these cases demonstrates that where there are loans from family members to the parties, If the debt is to be recoverable, the loan should be documented and secured as much as possible. Without this security the question of enforceability and being taken into account in property division could be fatal. BACK PAIN CAN KILL A significant number of people experience back pain during their lives. While this is usually the result of an injury or strain and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, it may also be caused by something more sinister such as cancer. Now before everyone rushes off to their GPs let me reassure you that these days this is not a common way of presentation for a diagnosis of cancer. However, in the past it was not uncommon for men to present with prostate cancer in this way. Also, women used to present with breast cancer and both sexes with lung cancer. It is important to note that these cancers presenting in this way are unlikely to be curable. The reason it is not so common now is that we have programs to check for these conditions in the early and potentially curable stages. There are mammograms as well as ultrasound and biopsies for breast cancer. There is Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests, prostate examination and multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for prostate cancer. These tests may indicate the need for a biopsy. While the PSA test is not a specific test for prostate cancer, it does tell us if there is a change happening within a man’s prostate. That change may be the usual enlargement which occurs as men get older, inflammation or be the result of various physical activities including sex, exercise, bike riding and others which may cause the test to increase. In 2014 at the Prostate Cancer World Congress held in Melbourne an attempt was made to deal with the conflicting advice issued with regard to testing for possible prostate cancer. The result was the Melbourne Consensus Statement which consisted of five statements.

The statements may be summarised as: 1. Tested men aged 50-69 are less likely to die from prostate cancer or have it spread from the prostate to other parts of the body. 2. Not all men diagnosed with prostate cancer require aggressive treatment to live their normal lifespans. 3. The man must be considered as an individual. There may be a family history of the disease or he may have other conditions which may be more life threatening such as heart disease. 4. A PSA test in the 40’s is useful to predict the future risk of prostate cancer. It can help sort the men into the need for more frequent or less frequent testing and help men decide with their doctors whether they wish to pursue testing further. 5. Older men (over 70) with a life expectancy of more than ten years should not be denied testing. The important thing is that most people would like to live for a long time and a good time and in weighing things up, treatment and its consequences should not be worse than the condition.

DO YOU WORK IN A NOISY ENVIRONMENT?

If you work in an environment that is noisy your ears may be taking a ‘bashing’. Do you ever leave work with a ringing in your ears? If so, this may be a sign of damage to the tiny hair cells in the cochlear. At first this may be a temporary shift in threshold but if the hearing mechanism continues to be exposed to high levels of noise the hearing may become permanently damaged. This type of hearing loss is referred to as noise induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Workers who have suffered permanent hearing loss during their employment may be entitled to a lump sum payment of compensation. The worker must have been employed in Queensland for a minimum of 5 years and must either be; working, temporarily unemployed or retired for less than 12 months. A hearing test at AUDiOHEALTH will determine the degree of loss with anything greater than 5% considered eligible for a claim. Interestingly, a worker can bring a new claim for hearing loss every 3 years providing there has been a further minimum of 1% of hearing loss since the previous claim. If you feel your hearing has been affected by the workplace contact AUDiOHEALTH now to book your initial consultation. The technology exists to help people with this type of hearing loss hear better but it is a challenging loss of hearing to assist as the hearing is more damaged in the higher frequencies and less in the lower frequencies. Essentially, the clarity of speech is impacted as the higher frequencies contain the sibilants of speech which enables words to be identified. This is why people often say that they don’t have a problem hearing they have a problem understanding speech particularly in the presence of background noise.

It is essential that the clinician is experienced in the software that is used to program the hearing devices, by utilising their expertise and investing time, care and effort into the programming client’s outcomes are very positive.

BACK PAIN JAN I N E N O O P E T CH

Statistics now show that around 80% of the adult population suffers from back pain at some point in their lives ,usually in the lower back area. It is quite obvious that as a society we are doing something in our everyday lives which is contributing to this and that is SITTING! We are sitting far too much - approx 8-12+hrs per day, at our desks, in the car, on the couch. Like the saying goes “USE IT OR LOSE IT” and we are losing it. Sitting causes tight hamstrings, pressure on the lower back vertebras, pelvis out of alignment and rounding of the upper back. and more. If we are doing this day in and day out, it has a dramatic effect on your posture and your spine and some of us have been doing this for years. Take a minute and go and stand in front of the mirror. Turn side on and face on and observe your own posture, look at your shoulders are they rounding forward, is your tail sticking out like a ducks rear end or is it tucking under? Your posture just doesn’t affect your structure of your body, but also the organs of the body, blood vessels and circulation of the body and If your posture is out, muscles are not working in balance and become over and underworked and in time causes pain. When you are sitting generally, you are not sitting in a nice upright position with abdominals and back extensors working together nicely. It is more likely you are sitting in a lazy posture position, with your lower back slumping losing that S Shape of the spine. This puts extra pressure on the discs in the lower back and this in time can cause bulging discs, pain and suffering. We need to change our ways! If you have a desk job, you can now get standing desks, which can adjust to your preferred height and are ergonomically better for your body. Also, you can set an alarm on your phone for every 20mins and get up and move, walk around, do

some stretches, just get up off that chair. If you are just sitting at home enjoying TV, Netflix, sitting around having coffees or generally just being lazy. It time to get off the couch. The best thing we can all do it just move our bodies. The human body is amazing but it appears we are not looking after this wonderful gift. Just take a look around the next time you are out and about, observe the postures of our local area, you will see what I am talking about. The great news is that you can improve your poor posture and also relieve the pain in your lower back with Pilates. Book yourself in with an experienced Pilates Instructor for an Initial Consultation and Intro One on One sessions. You will learn how to engage your Inner Support System — muscles which consist of the Transverse Abdominus, Rectus Adominus, Linea Alba, Pelvic Floor Diaphragm, Internal and External Obliques, Back Extensors and Psoas which all together act as a protection for your spine. You will also learn exercises on Pilates Reformer or Cadillac. which support your back. All areas of your spine will be addressed in balance Back Extension, Flexion and Lateral Flexion and Rotation exercises to get your spine moving again. The body is truly remarkable, even though you have spent many years sitting and not looking after your body, it will respond extremely quickly and you will notice a difference in your posture in up to 10 sessions. D AV I D L E I T H

Familiar as I am with gurgling down the private vehicle “purchase funnel” I can’t help but notice navigating the brochures, websites and showrooms in the modern automotive world seem to have become more a game of top trumps than a buying experience. Increasingly difficult to differentiate the majority of mid range vehicles even perhaps on paper. Casual viewing of a Hyundai or a Holden brings to me the same involuntary “Meh” to my lips and finds me wandering around a yard in search of anything that might, in fact, titillate my motoring taste buds. It seems that practical sedans

and mid-size crossovers now have one global design guide - alarmingly relying on styling cues set by the more adventurous of the motor designers. It is impossible to ignore the similarity between the stunning Alfa 159 and the somewhat more distilled Mitsubishi Lancer, or the Lexus NX which appears rented its profile with the Hyundai and Nissan for their current crossover lineup. Every manufacturer seems to have an exception, from the Toyota 86, the Hyundai Veloster, even the rather splendid new Mazda MX5 and it’s Italian suited sibling the 124 Abarth. These and other’s represent the slim hope that homogeny won’t bore us all to an early automotive grave. But what

it does go to prove is that they can all do better - I have never seen a boring Citroen, insane yes boring no. Alfa may never have built a truly good car, but the pay off has always been the way they shaped the tin. Forget the low volume show offs, Aston Martins have to look beautiful, it’s their job, and for a highway Giselle you’ll pay super model money. But this doesn’t mean that we should all settle for anonymous boxes (as my father used to say paint them all grey and leave off the chrome). Car manufacturers need to address the simple fact that your car (and mine) are our bling, a statement of intent. Just because we can’t all be different doesn’t mean we should all be the same!
