Age doesn’t have to look the way it used to! Photos by Catherine Coombs
Today, ageing is more subtle. More gradual. Shouldn’t your anti-ageing be just as subtle? Not an overnight miracle or a quick-fix, but a gradual, longlasting natural improvement – an enhancement of your best features. The frozen, overfilled look is what has turned many women away from treatment. Anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments are accessible anywhere but it’s not the total answer to looking good for your age. The Slow Facelift is a Face Today’s signature treatment journey, which is a non-surgical alternative to traditional facelifts, using (facial Injectables) regeneration solutions which help to replace lost collagen and elastin naturally. Correcting shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that appear gradually over time can now be reversed naturally using bio stimulating products re-growing your own natural youth. Aspects of The Slow Facelift have been used by physicians for decades and now in combination with technology, we can help prevent the signs of ageing. Using an exclusive technique that gives subtle results over time, Face Today’s Slow Facelift replaces lost collagen to give you a more natural-looking appearance, without giving you away. A full treatment involves a product that re-grows lost volume, with the second treatment creating elastin and collagen. Then, our non surgical laser treatments can increase the results, creating a younger, tighter, fresher face with effects lasting for years. Welcome to the new age of anti-age!
PA R T O F T H E T E A M FROM BACK LEFT SUE COLLINS, A LV I N C H E A M , C AT E R I N A F R I N G U E L LO FRONT LEFT CHLOE BRIDGLAND AND NICOLE BELLE
The technique focuses on beautiful skin by stimulating collagen and elastin to give an amazing glow, a gradual lift of cheek tissue to plump out your shine, and lifting and toning the neck and jawline. The Face Today team have been performing the procedure for over 10 years and have developed a strong following of local devotees who have halted their signs of ageing.

face today Experience you can trust
Tully. Marg is the team’s ‘travelling nurse’ and when she isn’t making the most of Cairns, travels to Melbourne each month to treat a loyal client base.
Face Today founder and registered nurse, Nicole Belle is at the core of the business and has decades of experience including a former highly successful clinic in Sydney, is excited to focus solely on Cairns and local areas to share solutions for North Queenslanders.
Recently acquired by rapidly growing Artisan Aesthetic Group, Face Today now has access to more advanced treatments and technologies, a highly skilled medical board, an in-house training academy, a client loyalty program and an industry leading client software interface. The team are thrilled to be working with Artisan and excited about their careers and the future.
“At Face Today, we believe everyone deserves to look and feel their confident best. We deliver more than just treatments – we listen carefully to our clients’ goals and create a personalised treatment plan to deliver on their goals. We treat clients using a wide range of treatments from skin therapies through to injectables and aim to holistically look after their skin health,” she said. Newly appointed clinic manager and cosmetic nurse, Alvin Cheam leads the team. The team consists of many well-known faces including Kerie Jackson, Kathy Barley, Caterina Fringuello, Marg Mee, Chloe Bridgland, Sue Collins and Fran Jackson. The team has exciting growth plans with doctors being able to treat in-clinic soon. With decades of experience combined, the Face Today team are masters of their craft, and believe everyone can look healthy and rejuvenated without surgically invasive procedures or tell-tale signs of treatments.
Face Today’s new loyalty program will launch in September, earning valued clients one rewards dollar for every $25 spent in clinic. The rewards dollars will be redeemable across treatments in-clinic, from injectables to their signature Slow Facelift. The other great news is there is no expiry date on the points, so clients can save them up for a special treatment or redeem them as often as liked. The loyalty program is Face Today’s way of thanking clients for trusting us with their skin. Also launching in September will be online bookings, offering busy clients a convenient way to book in for treatments via Face Today’s website, www.facetoday.com.au
Face Today’s Marg Mee also offers services in Port Douglas, Atherton Tablelands and soon she will be available in

N Q F I N A N C E S O L U T I O N S ( F O R M E R LY 1 8 0 0 A P P R O V E D )
What made you decide to rebrand 1800 Approved to NQ Finance Solutions? We have such good local relationships with everyone. The foundation of the business is all local and a lot of our referrals are local. We wanted it to resonate with our local community and therefore changed the name to reflect our local community. What’s the best business advice you’ve received? Always learn from your mistakes, and never be afraid to have a go. What do you like best about going to work every day? My team which includes broker Ben Besse, operations manager Mel Kelleher and office manager Abbey Kelleher. We’re like a close family here. What’s a typical day at work like for you? First thing we do when we get into work every morning is have a meeting just to see what everyone has on their agenda for the day and see if there’s anything I can help them with. Then we just set up our to-do lists for the day, and we go from there. There are never two days the same. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you at work? There are always funny things happening here. We have a lot of laughter in our office! Where do you get your inspiration for work from? I mainly I get my inspiration from Richard Branson, who says there’s nothing you can’t be without having fun and still succeeding. If you don’t enjoy what you do, why are you doing it?
Are you from Cairns? If not, what brought you here? No, I’m from Sydney. I moved here for the lifestyle. What do you do outside of work? I’m heavily involved in the horse-racing industry. I have two sons (aged 10 and 12) and am heavily involved in their rugby league. I also enjoy motorcycle riding and boating as well. What do you like best about living in Cairns? The climate and the people, who are so relaxed. I’ve been here since 2007 and would never go back to living in a city like Sydney. It’s so busy and everything you do there is so transactional. For example, if you go to Woolies and you’re in the checkout it’s all transactional. In Cairns if you go to your local Woollies the person behind the counter enjoys a conversation – everyone is very friendly here. What advice would you pass on to others who are interested in having a career in finance brokering? Come to me – I will train you! I will train you to do it the right way from the start. What’s ahead for NQ Finance Solutions? We’re really excited about our rebranding. We’re still in the same location, still affiliated with 1800 Approved and still provide our clients secure financing for cars, boats, bikes, trucks, equipment, commercial ventures and personal loans through our large access to leading financial institutions.

P O W E R & DATA S U P P O R T S E R V I C E S
Tell us about Power & Data Support Services (PDSS). While the business was established in 2003 it become a company in 2012. PDSS exists primarily in a niche area of critical power supply systems, always looked to training to embrace the constant changes to our industry. What are the major changes you have seen since you started in the industry? It was said many years ago, that our electrical industry has a change or upgrade of products, design, engineering and techniques every 32 seconds! We expect a lot of our technical and support staff without adding more red tape to the process. The challenge is to remain sustainable in today’s market, without compromising the engineering solutions.
What do you like best about going to work every day? Being with my teams. They keep impressing me every day, and that’s administration as well as technical staff.
How did you get into the industry? In 1974 I became an electrical apprentice working for a small electrical contractor in Brisbane. Completing my apprenticeship with a national company, I was fortunate to spend many years operating in a vast array of endeavours from mining to high-rise office towers, hospitals and power stations, becoming chief estimator, learning more engineering aspects and providing me with confidence to challenge.
What do you do outside of work? I enjoy being an area co-ordinator for Master Electricians Australia (recently honoured as Life Member), a Board member of FNQ Football, operating a cattle property and developing an olive grove. And, importantly, catching up with family, especially my 97-year-old dad, my sons, who are in New York and the Gold Coast, and my partner’s family.
What is one of the most challenging projects you have worked on, and why? Our first major foray as PDSS was the replacement of a main switch board for a hospital while keeping the facility operational. A testament to our talented team.

What’s the best business advice you’ve received? Trust your instincts. If it doesn’t feel right or smell good, then it has a very high likelihood of being something you really don’t want to play with!
What’s a typical day at work like for you? There aren’t too many typical days, and that is the way to keep our edge in this sometimes-challenging industry.
What do you like best about living in Cairns? I enjoy the strength and colour of the mountains and the sea and all that they contain. What advice would you pass on to others who are interested in having a career in the same industry? The electrical industry is a continually growing and developing career paths with greater opportunities in alternative energy sources. So, there are many areas and places of opportunity.

ADAM & EVA
When did you start McLeod’s Painting and why? My wife and I started our business November 2017. We had always planned to have our own business and were waiting for the right time. We wanted to take control of our own lives and future. My wife Soma had been working as a nurse for 10 years was also looking for a career change.
Adam & Eva has been in Cairns since 1999. What do you think is its secret to success? I’m not sure that there is a secret. I’m lucky enough to work in an industry that I am passionate about, and I’ve also had great loyalty from staff and clients over the years. If anything, I think consistency is key - we have worked with L’Oréal for 20 years which has created lots of opportunity for myself and my staff.
How long have you been in the industry? I picked up my first paint brush when I was 16 years old in Cairns and painted until I was 30. I then changed careers and went into hotel management for 10 years after which I returned to the construction industry. I became Pproject manager of a national painting company, running the Cairns branch.
What do you like best about going to work every day? I have built great relationships with my clients- I have loved seeing their hair and lives evolve. What was the most challenging job you’ve had at work? Working on location in 42-degree heat! What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you at work? A lot of funny things have happened at Adam & Eva! I have worked with a lot of different personalities over the years, so there is always something interesting happening.
What do you like best about going to work every day? Seeing the great culture in my crew. Because I can control the outcome, environment, attitude and culture for my team it makes my job enjoyable. What do you like best about living in Cairns? The lifestyle and being surrounded by my family and friends.
Where do you get your work inspiration from? Social media is a huge influence in today’s society. There are so many great hairdressers showcasing hair that they are doing in their salons daily. Also keeping up to date with education.
Are you from Cairns? If not, what brought you here? Yes - I was born in Cairns. I’ve travelled a lot, but I will always call Cairns home.
What’s the best business advice you’ve received? Someone once told me to stop chasing the money and start chasing the passion.
What advice would you pass on to others who are interested in having a career in the same industry? Hairdressing is a great industry when you are passionate about it. It has to become more of a lifestyle then a job if you really want to succeed.
What do you do outside of work? If I am not socialising, occasionally I ride mountain bikes and go fishing.
Words by Janie Barton • Photo by Catherine Coombs
Anything else you’d like to add? It’s been a great 20 years in business. I’d like to say thank you to all of our wonderful clients and my amazing team members over the years who have all been a part of this great achievement!
What was the most challenging job you’ve had? What’s challenging is the diversity of jobs and the clients that we work with. From residential to corporate clients or builders. Every client is different and having to meet their individual expectations can be quite challenging. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you at work? I had a woman request us to paint a little vase. (And no, we don’t paint vases!) Where do you get your work inspiration from? I love successful outcomes. Seeing a job completed and a happy client is what I find rewarding. What’s the best business advice you’ve received? Listen to your wife, she’s always right! What do you do outside of work? Spending quality time with my family. I also enjoy working out at the gym, and I love trying new restaurants and a good red.
C i t y L i f e 16 M a g a z i n e
What do you like best about living in Cairns? It’s such a great lifestyle here, and we have the best winters! Are you from Cairns? If not, what brought you here? I’m originally from Mackay. My mother remarried and moved to Cairns when I was 14 and I did my schooling at Trinity Bay High. What advice would you pass on to others who are interested in having a career as a painter? Regardless of the career you choose, if you commit to something then commit to being good at it. Be a master craftsman and be proud. Anything else you’d like to add? We beautify and protect the most expensive assets you will ever own. I’m committed to developing my crew to better the painting industry and to create pride in who we are and what we do.

OWNER BIG RED CARPET CLEANING
What made you decide to purchase Big Red Carpet Cleaning in 2016? Resigning from my previous role as a manufacturing manager afforded me the opportunity to become my own boss. Transferring my skill set and work ethic to the current business easily enabled me to realise the advantages of owning my own business. In hindsight my wife Sue and I wish we had done in sooner! What was your most challenging job at Big Red? Probably the Cairns Convention Centre Basketball Stadium due to the sheer size of the undertaking, including cleaning 3000sq m of carpet in four days and going up down a few sets of stairs. My son Zac recorded over 21,000 steps and 120 stair climbs in one day using his smart watch! Where do you get your work inspiration from? My family has always been my inspiration. My father was always working whether at home or at work. A brother and my sister are business owners and have both successfully owned and operated their respective businesses over many years. My wife Sue has always been dedicated to her profession, and I draw inspiration from her ability to serve her clientele with unending dedication. I count myself lucky to have benefited from both sides of our family with parents who have shown us that hard work is a means to an end, and there is great satisfaction from knowing you did your best. What’s the best business advise that you have received? This is hard to pinpoint one single piece of advice as I have had several good mentors in my working life. Building relationships with your clients by taking the time to get to know them is important. If I had to prioritise it would have to be a couple of comments from my late brother who told me to take time every day to complete the necessary tasks at the end of each business day and always do it. What do you do outside of work? My wife and I spent many years on house renovations in Western Australia and Cairns, and I am on my fourth boat restoration. Boating and fishing are always high on the agenda with family time, and I love to read. I also enjoy a day out on the reef snorkeling with my wife and a night out on the reef with some close friends enjoying the spectacular fishing that our region affords us.

C i t y L i f e 18 M a g a z i n e
What do you like best about Living in Cairns? Sue and I lived in Stratford for many years when our family was young but now live closer to town. Whether it’s going to the markets early in the morning or enjoying a meal out I love that we can be home in less than 10 minutes without the hassle of being stuck in traffic. The lack of travel time to reach any destination, the natural beauty, the weather at this time of year and the wildcaught and farmed produce from this region rounds out for me the best things about living in Cairns. Are you from Cairns? If not, what brought you here? I am originally from Brisbane and first visited Cairns in 1983 during a road trip with a couple of mates. I completed my apprenticeship as Fitter and Turner and started working in Weipa where I met my wife, who was doing her regional service as a teacher. We left Weipa together and traveled Australia – a trip that stretched out for seven years! We then lived in the Northern Territory before I applied for a job at NQEA in Cairns. Although my wife Sue is originally from New South Wales, she spent the majority of her formative years living in Cairns, prior to returning with me in 1998. What advice would you give others interested in having a similar career? Stay ahead of the curve – that is, move forward not backwards. If something seems likely in your mind, then it most likely will happen. Do not get comfortable with any position you maintain in life. Above all, reflect on what has happened in your past and learn from it and strive for something better than what you achieved yesterday, and you will succeed. What are your future plans for Big Red? Big Red is starting the new financial year with my son Zac as a full-time employee. He completed his IICRC training in Melbourne as a carpet cleaning and stain removal technician and is in the final stages of obtaining his pest certificate/license. This will add a new arm to the business and allow customers to benefit from a one-stop shop for carpet, soft furnishings, tile and pest control. Rebranding of Big Red is underway as part of our business development planning. Our mission statement is to be the market leader of high-quality carpet, furniture, tile and grout cleaning in FNQ.

How long have you been with VPG, and why did you join? I joined VPG in 2004. The opportunity to develop young people’s career aspirations appealed to me. VPG offered a chance for me to utilise my skills to develop the work readiness of Cairns youth. 16 years later, my role may have changed but I still look forward to working with my team every day towards our purpose of improving child and youth transition. What do you like best about going to work every day? My team - we have fun every day. Diversity – every day is different. Results - we get to share in our young people’s success!
What are some of the most challenging aspects of your job? Challenging community perception of young people. Cairns’ young people are an enormous asset to our community and with appropriate investment and support will play an essential role in creating a thriving community. What is the most rewarding part of your job? The most rewarding aspects of my job would be: My team enjoying and being inspired by their important work; The young people who engage and work hard towards achieving their aspirations;
Creating opportunities for our youth; Our leadership team. Where do you get your work inspiration from? My inspiration comes from many different people. My main inspiration is my CEO Maryanne Tranter who always sees and believes the best in every person and makes you want to strive for greatness. My team also inspire me every day with their passion for young people and our youth. What do you do outside of work? When I am not working, my husband and I are spending time with our three daughters at their extracurricular activities or with family, attending various community events to support local, and I like to cook. Are you from Cairns? If not, what brought you here? I am Victorian born, however I moved to Cairns at the aged of eight with my family so I like to say I am a fullypledged Qld’ner from Cairns! What do you like best about living in Cairns? Everything! I love calling Cairns home. We are so lucky to live in a city that has such amazing landscape and a huge playful backyard. Our accommodation and food is second to none, and when I travel overseas the best part is coming home - the cleanliness, the fresh air, the new buildings.

After searching for the ideal location close to the city centre I secured the lease on McLeod Street & began the shop fit out out in late 2017, opening in January 2018. What is your favourite part of your business? Seeing new designs & buying dresses is a dream, I love it. But honestly its my clientele that is most important to me, having the opportunity to find the perfect outfit for my clients, to have them walk out the door feeling confident. I get so much satisfaction when my clients tell me how happy they were with the outfit, the comments they received & how it made them feel, to me that is the best part.
Are you from Cairns? I was born in Brisbane, as a family we moved to Cairns in the early 80’s. I completed my schooling in Cairns & later moved to back to Brisbane to further my career, in 2008 I moved back to Cairns. Cairns is home, I appreciate everything that Cairns has to offer, I wouldn’t live anywhere else, Its paradise. What is the best business advice you have received? To fully understand the market before you go into business, Do as much research as you possibly can, Its incredibly important, In your business you need to set realistic & achievable targets. The better funded you are before you start a business the greater chance you have at succeeding because history tells us in Australia that a high percentage of new businesses fail in the first year. Most importantly don’t become complacent, constantly review & re-ases, adapt to changes in the marketplace.

When and why did you decide to work for Resort Brokers? After a few years into running the family resort in Cairns, I started my own consultancy and relief management business, specialising in management rights, and when Resort Brokers approached me in 2016 to join their team, it was a natural progression for me. What stands Resort Brokers apart from others in the same industry? Resort Brokers Australia has a proven track record of sales success stretching from Brisbane to Broome, Tasmania to the Top End and beyond Australia’s shores. The company is uniquely licensed in all states and territories. How was 2018 for Resort Brokers and what’s the forecast for 2019? The Cairns economy is looking strong with the Crystalbrook Collection and Nova City projects underway, the city’s beautification projects and new investment opportunities continue to flow the region. There has never been a more exciting time for savvy investors to buy in Cairns. I had a record year in 2018 completing in excess of $36 million in management rights sales, which I think is a remarkable achievement for a relatively new broker operating in challenging economic times.

lifestyle in Far North Queensland, and as a new mum I realise how fortunate I am to have chosen a career that I am passionate about which blends work-fromhome flexibility, complex negotiations and the excitement of closing deals. Where does your passion for the industry come from? I have been entrenched in the industry for over 10 years and can see how lucrative and sensible a home-based accommodation business can be. As the youngest female working in the industry nationally, I have a different approach compared to others. In my view, both buyers and sellers need to be understood and provided with exceptional service. With technology, people are more connected and more informed than ever, making them much savvier. What’s the best business advice you’ve received? Remember that failure is a comma, not a period, and always make sure you take advice from someone who’s going in the same direction as I am. What do you like best about living in Cairns? I absolutely love Far North Queensland and the tropical lifestyle so, with my management rights background, I’m very well placed to help people enter the industry here. When I’m not working, I will be with my family fishing on the Great Barrier Reef or relaxing at one of the beautiful local beaches.

When and why did you decide to work for Resort Brokers? Tourism is a $25 billion industry in Queensland, and I wanted to be part of it. With a long and successful career in small business sales, I joined Resort Brokers, Australia’s network of more than 40 specialist brokers who have experience, insight and superior analytical skills in the accommodation industry. But it was Chenoa’s energy, enthusiasm and savviness that made it easy to join the team. We come from similar backgrounds and both of us value honesty and integrity, and we both work hard to educate and support the accommodation industry in Far North Queensland. How was 2018 for Resort Brokers and what’s the forecast for 2019? As a result of the banking Royal Commission, we will see a degree of credit tightening and a more cautious approach by banks which means that we need to let the market be our guide. This just means that it is more important than ever that buyers and sellers have the advice, help and experience of industry professionals (like us) in orchestrating successful outcomes. What do you like best about going to work every day? Living and working in tropical Far North Queensland is pinch-worthy and so rewarding. On any given day, I am driving past a beach, walking into a luxurious resort foyer or meeting with savvy business-

minded people who are wanting to buy or sell a business. Where does your passion for the industry come from? I have not only started, grown and sold my own businesses, I have had the privilege to represent hundreds of other business sales as a business broker. I have seen just about every story of success of failure and learned many lessons along the way. What brought you to Cairns? After selling my Townsvillebased broking firm (NQ Business Sales), I moved to Cairns and joined the Resort Brokers team to provide a professional and first-class service to buyers and sellers of management rights, motels, backpackers and caravan parks. What do you do outside of work? I travel to see my daughter in Townsville at least once a month. I am an avid reader and writer. Through my company (Zoom in Business) I have published a series of workbooks on how to buy, grow, value and sell a business, and I am currently writing a book for teenagers on understanding the business of business. What do you like best about living in Cairns? I love the rich and diverse culture that seamlessly mixes locals and tourists. There are so many mountains, beaches, tidal wetlands, freshwater swimming holes, fishing spots, festivals and events to offer a lifetime of memories – especially as a local.

What do you like the least about your job? Call centres. What do like the most? The fact that we have made such a positive change to the way you see a travel agent. You are well known in the industry – why do you think that is? I managed JAL and apparently upgraded a few people in my time. I’m so glad I did as they now all book with me. I’ve also lived in Cairns for over 30 years, so I guess I’m a local! What’s the difference between home consultants and your business? Good question. I started as a home consultant before I went out on my own four years ago. The easiest way to describe it is we get paid from the airline and suppliers; home consultants get paid from agencies such as mine. They contract. Some of my team are mobile and contracted to MG. Why did you join Helloworld Travel? This was a tough decision, but I’m glad I invested in Helloworld. We may be small, but there is nothing we now don’t have. Besides the CEO Andrew Burnes is from Cairns!
What are your thoughts on booking online? Don’t start me! Ah yes, everyone thinks they are a travel agent. In fact, all they do is make us look better!

What is your niche market? My clients are usually business people travelling for work or leisure. I usually know what style of hotel they like, the seat they prefer, the aircraft. In fact, I am more of a PA then a travel agent! It’s not rare for me to book dinners, wake-up calls, limos and even call the wife or husband to say a flight has been delayed!
Biggest myth in travel? That we are always on holiday. Tell us about the launch of your app: It’s very technical for me. My daughter can’t believe I came up with it. The app provides every traveller (client or not) a safe platform to securely book tours worldwide. Search and download Mercedes Travel Sightseeing. Why book with MG? My name is on the door, and our reputation is everything.
NORTH QUEENSLAND RECYCLING AGENTS
As a dedicated Cairns recycling centre for 26 years, North Queensland Recycling Agents (NQRA) has recently expanded its services, facility and staff to help locals capitalise on the Queensland Government’s new Container Refund Scheme.
Along with the container exchange program, NQRA offers a number of different services to local businesses in Cairns and the surrounding suburbs in an effort to greatly reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill that could quite easily be recycled and used again in some way.
The family owned business has acquired a new shed and employed 10 additional locals to help Cairns residents and businesses support and benefit from the new scheme, which offers a 10-cent refund on each eligible container returned.
The team at the scrap-recycling depot on Federation Street can purchase non-ferrous scrap metal including copper, brass, aluminium, stainless steels, radiators and batteries at a per kilo rate from businesses and the general public and is open Monday to Thursday from 6.30am to 5pm, Friday from 6.30am to 3pm and Saturday from 6.30am to noon (closed on Sunday). On average, 64 tonne of scrap metal and 55 tonne of batteries is sent to Liberty Recycling Queensland each month.
“On our first day of operating the buy-back scheme the Cairns’ community cashed in 45,000 items,” said NQRA owner Ian Kermode, who says the program is an important innovation in recycling. “This buy-back scheme is a must. We are such a wasteful society, and we just can’t keep wasting things. “To recycle aluminium requires only five percent of the energy that is required to turn bauxite into aluminium. We can’t just keep digging holes in the ground.” NQRA has an all-weather refund facility at 152 Newell St where customers can drive through and staff are on hand to take the containers, count them and then pay the customers cash for the eligible items. While most aluminium, glass, steel, plastic and liquid paperboard containers between 150ml and 3 litres are eligible, there are some exceptions, such as wine and straight spirit glass bottles and plain milk containers. “We also lend wool bales and crates to our regular customers and residents of the Northern Beaches, so they have facilities at their homes and businesses to collect their items,” Ian said. “We can also provide stands to assist people to carry the bales.” The container Refund Centre is open Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 5pm, Saturday 6.30am to 2pm and Sunday from 9am to 2pm.
Being able to reuse and recycle is the most basic thing that we can do to help Mother Nature.”
NQRA have a cardboard recycling service and process around 700 tonne of cardboard each month from supermarkets, small businesses, shops and restaurants. They have a selection of cages available for commercial cardboard removal, from 1.1 cubic metre bins to 10 cubic metre cages and are collected upon request or serviced on a regular basis. They have the ability to collect confidential documents and hard drives for destruction. A 240-litre wheelie bin can be delivered, and locks supplied if required. These bins are collected twice a week in a locked vehicle, brought back to NQRA’s premises where the bins are weighed and then the contents shredded. Confidentiality is maintained at all times and a Certificate of Destruction is issued. An office recycled paper collection service is also available. A 240-litre wheelie bin can be delivered for non-confidential office paper, cardboard, magazines, manila folders and white paper. These collections are done on a weekly basis. NQRA also accepts deliveries from the public of cardboard, plastic, glass and recyclable paper to its depot at no charge. These services are available for businesses from the Northern Beaches, through Cairns to Edmonton.
Words by Janie Barton Photos by Catherine Coombs
“Being environmentallyfriendly is very important these days,” Ian said. “We aim to be a recycling centre where people can bring in almost anything, and we’ll be able to recycle it one way or another.” For more information visit NQRA’s Facebook page at w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / N o r t h Queensland-RecyclingAgents-Containers-forChange-2074120975987723/

THE POWER OF PR WHY SPONSORSHIP? DAN AE J ONE S
There is no question in business that we get asked to contribute to so many organisations and sponsor so many causes. And it’s sometimes easier to just say no so people stop bothering you and asking you to put your hand in your pocket. But I’d like you to think about it differently for a moment. Have you ever sat down and really thought about what organisations, charities, not for profits or causes align with you and your business? The cause doesn’t need to be associated with your industry, but the organisation might embody a whole heap of goodness that is important in life and to you and your team emotionally. I encourage you to sit down with your team and take the time to brainstorm this. Then choose one or a handful of entities you wish to support.
D anae J o n es i s M an a g in g D ir e c to r o f PR & M arket i n g fir m D a n a e J one s Co n su l t i n g P t y L td e : da nae@d an aej o n e s .c o m .a u w : www. d an aej o n es. c o m .a u
Now I don’t want you to think that you need to contribute significantly to all of these organisations, it might be something considered quite small for you, but could be received as something very big for that organisation. If you don’t have surplus cash to donate, consider in-kind support. This could be demonstrated in a variety of ways – here are just a few ideas: 1. A member of your team sitting on their Board or Committee and offering your skill sets to that organisation on a pro bono basis 2. Offering to initiate a third-party fundraising event to help raise funds for the organisation. It could be something as simple as you decide to chip in $1,000 and you ask your team to come up with a fun way to match the donation. It might be a morning tea or a dress a certain colour day to work in return for gold coin donations from your staff. This might be a regular activity that you run over a period of 3 months to build up the fundraising bucket for the organisation before you do the official hand over. 3. It could even be something as simple as purchasing tables at one of the charity events throughout the year
and encouraging all your big spending clients to come along and also help raise money for the cause. My point is, sponsorship does not have to be for big business, everyone in business can get involved in some way shape or form and attract a mutual benefit from it. Sponsorship Marketing has been defined as: “A corporate sponsorship is a form of marketing in which a corporation pays for all or some of the costs associated with a project or program in exchange for recognition.” Source: Investopedia Sponsorship is a Marketing and PR tool just like any other form that you can use in your business to help you achieve your desired goals. Before entering into a sponsorship agreement you need to first be clear about your reasons for doing it, how much you want to spend on it, and what you want to achieve from it. Do you want to do it as part of your marketing mix, or do you just want to do it because it makes you ‘feel good’ (i.e. contributing to your child’s school or sporting team) with no expectation of anything in return. Once you are clear on what you do or don’t want to get out of it, then you can start to work up your sponsorship plan. Let’s assume you do want to achieve recognition from the sponsorship – then you need to develop a sponsorship strategy so you achieve best BANG for BUCK. Just some benefits of Corporate Sponsorship include: • Improving your public image or perception in the marketplace as a ‘good corporate citizen’ • Increase your degree of influence • Increase your brand awareness • Increase employee satisfaction • Increase sales • Assist with market research • Target a niche group The key to the most successful Corporate Sponsorships is ‘mutually beneficial’ agreements.

The long and colorful history of the Cairns Jockey Club started in the townships Mining Exchange Hotel in July 1884. Over fifty enthusiastic people signed up for membership and the very first race meeting was conducted shortly after. The day was proclaimed a holiday, and the meeting attracted attendees from as far afield as Herberton and Port Douglas. The Cannon family generously donated the land where the club is currently located, with the first race meeting held in 1911. Records show that the celebrated Brothers Cairns Cup was first conducted in the early 1900’s, with only the war years interrupting the continuous running of this event.

In recent times several developments have taken place at Cannon Park. The grandstand was opened 15th July 1972, by the Minister of Racing the Honorable Sir Gordon Chalk KBE. It was shortly after that work was started to an extension which now houses the main public bar, tote office and windows, and the Barrier Reef function room. New improvements include the extension of the gallops track to 1800m, construction of the horse swimming pool, completion of the air-conditioned swab stall, upgraded stewards towers and installation of an improved semaphore board and photo finish systems.
In March 2006 the edge of Cyclone Larry whipped through Cannon Park causing minor track and building structural damage. Several sections of the running rail were twisted beyond recognition, and the work shed roof was ripped off, exposing the starting barriers to water damage. On-course signage was damaged, as was the front gate ticket office. Nevertheless the saddest loss was for some of the magnificent fig trees in the tropical gardens. With office and bar buildings, and stables and tie-ups stalls escaping major damage, the club was fortunate enough to be able to continue trade. A team of members, volunteers and workers ensured that the cleanup and running rail repairs were completed swiftly, allowing trainers to continue their horses work programs with minimal disruption. Cannon Park has been the home to several smart gallopers who have graduated to becoming stakes place getters and metropolitan winners. These include recent Queensland Cup winner Regal Punch, and the north Queensland bred trio Strictly Smart, See You Twist and Dirtiere. The far north breeding ground does not stop with the gallopers. John O’Shea, Brian Mayfield-Smith and Jack Wilson spent their formative years honing their skills and talents at Cairns.

Styling Tips THANKS TO MILLI
What are 3 basic fashions on the field guidelines for both women and men? Check the Club website or social media pages for details on fashion categories and any rules or guidelines for the day. Make sure your overall look is cohesive and appears effortless. Most important basic guideline – you’re there to enjoy the day and have fun with fashion. Accessorise with a smile.
What trends are you loving at the moment? For women, we are seeing trends from the 80s and 60s making a comeback. From the 60s we have influences like tuxedos for women, tweed, shift dresses, the pillbox and even hairbands with big hair. From the 80s, we’re getting looks like puffed sleeves, big shoulders, high waisted trousers and even a touch of neon. For men, pattern-mixing is becoming very popular. For example, a checked suit and a spotted tie, or a patterned shirt and a striped tie etc. What colours are trending this year for men? Green is trending for men (and women) at the moment. For winter we are seeing shades like sage and olive. As we move into spring we’ll probably see more pastel shades like mint.

Do you have any budget tips? Doing your own hair and makeup can save money and it won’t disadvantage you if you do it well. A professional ‘up-do’ is not essential – choose a look which works with your age, outfit and headpiece (but keep it neat and tidy). Another budget tip is to remember that you are judged on your overall style and presentation, not the cost of your outfit. A clever, cost effective outfit can do just as well as an expensive outfit. Stick to your budget or you won’t enjoy the experience.
How important is stage presence? Stage presence is important because if you are act and move confidently, it will showcase your outfit better. Don’t overact though, and avoid gimmicks like galloping like a horse or blowing kisses to all your mates. You can do that later! What’s the best style advice you have ever received? Keep it simple. If you’re not sure about adding an accessory or a colour, you probably shouldn’t. Whose race day style do you admire? I don’t have one particular favourite. I tend to admire a lot of different looks. In general, I think Australian women and men lead the world in terms of appropriate fashion-forward race-day dressing. Although the Irish come a close second, there are some great looks coming from the Irish race days. As a fashions on the field judge, what do you look for in the winning outfit? The winning outfit has to be a combination of many things – fashionable, stylish, and season-appropriate. Often, someone who has taken a risk and not stuck to a ‘safe’ or ‘dependable’ look will be the one who stands out and wows the judges. There is no age or size limit – just try and be the best you can be for the style you know you can project. Any further comments? Judging fashions on the field is a tough job – there are often many great looks and choosing one can be very difficult. Most judges, like me, take their job very seriously and will never favour anyone based on who they know or what brand they are wearing. So, if you don’t agree with the judges’ choices, feel free to ask for constructive feedback but don’t let it ruin your day – try and have fun, make new friends and support the club!
What should you always keep in mind when choosing headwear for the races? The most important fashion rule is to wear a headpiece appropriate to the season – especially if you’re entering fashions on the field. Even though it can get hot in Cairns, try to avoid summer materials for the winter carnival and instead consider ‘transeasonal’ options or winter options (this applies to the men, too). I personally think the hat is the most important part of your outfit – a good hat can make a simple outfit look great (but not vice versa). I often buy my hat first! What are your top 3 racing fashion don’ts? Don’t wear something so uncomfortable you’re going to have a miserable day. If you insist on suffering for your fashion, have a back-up bag with essentials like comfortable shoes, bandaids, a light coat or anything else you might need later in the day.

What are your tips for accessorising? My rule is, keep it simple. Unless the accessory is the dominant feature of your look, then it should tie into your outfit in terms of proportion and colour. Don’t keep adding accessories if they don’t add value to your overall look.
What advice would you give to an entrant who has never been on stage? Smile and try to enjoy the experience. Everyone has to have a first time. Talk to the people either side of you, they are usually friendly and supportive.

Wayne describe your personal style? A little bit of Hamptons. What should men wear to the races? Definitely something they’re comfortable in, as it can be a long day! For me it’s always about the jacket and the pocket square. What trends are you loving at the moment? I’m loving the fact the races have caught up with fashion. You can now be a lot more mixed and matched with your outfits and not the traditional suit. Meaning that you can pop some fantastic colours in your jackets. I’m also over the moon that you no longer have to wear a tie or socks! Can you mix and match trousers and jackets? Absolutely! Why would you not, when it gives you so many more options and the ability to show some flair! C i t y L i f e 43 M a g a z i n e
For a male with a limited budget, what items do you suggest they do not skimp on? I think you’d be surprised as to what you can now get when shopping on a limited budget. Suits are not longer all $600! I do think if you want to ensure that you look great it’s important to match your belt to your shoes and accessorise, pocket squares, lapel pins, good sunglasses and a hat. Is it okay to wear shoes without socks? I hope so as I almost never do! Socks have become one of the great divides.....you either do socks because you always have or because you want a fun pop of colour or you don’t do socks because you roll your pants and show some ankle. What are your 3 racing fashion don’ts? Denim - NEVER! Cartoon and gimmick ties - Why? Wearing your work suit is not race wear

Interest rates are at an all-time low and look like staying that way for some time which makes the prospect of building an investment property very affordable. With all the different things happening around Cairns and the north recently; like so many great new projects from residential to commercial developments, to wind farms and MSF Sugar Power Station; its having a very positive effect on the region. This is great for our economy but it also means that more people will be moving to our area and will need somewhere to live. According to Heron Todd White’s latest Cairns Watch the vacancy rate for housing indicates ‘tight verging on stressed rental market conditions’ which reflects at 1.7% and for units was 1.8% resulting 1.8% overall. This all improves the future outlook for the Far North investment. Their report also shows that both vacant land and the purchase of existing homes are rising, while our residential building costs have been fairly stable. Our building approvals are less now than they were in mid-2015 so to put it simply….. we are not building enough rental properties to keep up with demand. Most rental agents want more properties to rent so now could be the time to build that investment home. Building a new home means you can save on sales
tax and there are other incentives like depreciation so talk to your financial advisor for more details. Domestic air travel is on the increase which means that more Australians are holidaying within Australia as they become aware of the value and safety of domestic holiday destinations. So Australia is back on the affordable list of holiday destinations and Cairns is near the top of that list. This also leads to destinations like Cairns becoming more popular for people and their families to live in, whether it be short term for work to cater for the new projects or permanently for lifestyle changes. Mortgages with very low interest rates (many under 4%) are currently being offered by many financial institutions so have a chat to your own financial institution or broker and see what they can do for you. Then come in and we can have a look at our investment packages for homes, duplexes and units complexes or we can tailor a package to suit you. TIME TO STEP UP There have been a number of announcements of late that have left many of us who are invested in the growth and progress of the city and region literally speechless. The first of these was Cathay’s announced departure from our skies giving six months notice to freight forwarders and the tourism industry that they were headed for greener pastures after 25 years of a solid relationship. It was bit like losing a loved one. Of course Brisbane was quick to capitalise on this with the Brisbane airport assuring us that they would pick up the slack and everything would work out just dandy. Locally those who should have been in the know feigned surprise with lots of hand wringing all around from here to Brisbane. A number of people went missing in action and still are. That was just the warm up act to the main event it seems. Quietly in the dead of night Freeport Indonesia emptied their freight consolidation yard and laid off staff after their last shipment left here in late March. They severed a 45 year service relationship with Cairns at the end of June opting to service their giant West Irian operations out of Brisbane and Newcastle and bypassing Cairns altogether. Of course, we can only speculate as to what the true causes were for the decisions of both, but one thing is for sure. We need to do better and we need to work a lot harder to keep these sorts of international partnerships if we are to grow and prosper. As you approach the halfway mark driving from Brisbane to Cairns you start to notice the change as you go through community after community struggling with stagnating population growth, unemployment, boarded up shop fronts, lease signs everywhere, increasing lawlessness and social
fragmentation, broken economies and broken promises. The further you drive, the further we are getting away from the urban power and influence. Our resilience tells us hold our nerve and don’t complain. We keep clinging to the belief that it well get better as we await the next big announcement. Well it is getting worse, we are running short of new announcements and our appetite for belief is waning, so it’s time for many to step up. There are growing opportunities ahead with the Federal Government Pacific Step Up policy. In simple terms Australia has to reengage actively with our Pacific and Melanesian neighbours as well as maintaining our growing trade and investment opportunities with Asia. Additionally the rebuilding of Defence assets on Manus Island ( with a bit of US encouragement) to counter other strategic issues is not an “if ” but a “when” and Cairns needs to position for this and that means a bigger effort from our traditional economic partners. Who are they? Well it is the Cairns Regional Council, the seaport and the airport. When these three operate in synch, all else seems to follow. The big three owe it to our community to show the way. Let’s discuss. The CRC needs to provide the planning certainty around land uses. The big strategic planning issues are theirs to own. They have a legislative responsibility as well as the moral and leadership responsibility to do this in partnership with State and Commonwealth governments. The seaport needs to have a comprehensive development plan in place that compliments the City Plan so that we have an agreed vision of what the city and the port will look like in the next 30 years. After all they exist side by C i t y L i f e 50 M a g a z i n e
side. Investors need to know this and if we are to take advantage of these opportunities, we need to actually do something about what it takes to attract and retain businesses and investment. It is frankly unbelievable that the vital matter of port dredging has taken 9 years from inception to action and the last serious piece of infrastructure built in the port in the last 20 years is a brewery. Something is quite obviously seriously amiss. You cannot keep screwing the lessees to meet the financial demands from Brisbane. Ditto for the airport. How is it that in 2019 we are still discussing the feasibility of an airport freight hub at Cairns when 3 years ago there was an announcement of a major airport infrastructure upgrade including comprehensive airside freight handling facilities and major upgrades to the domestic and international airport terminal precincts. That plan was abandoned as quickly as it was announced sadly. How has the Cairns International Airport come to this point where we are losing market share of international services into Queensland whilst new services from/to Brisbane and the Gold Coast are announced on a regular basis. Where is the plan to go get this business back and where is the competitive streak to take on the Brisbane airport at their own game? Of course each talks about their commitment to an aviation attraction strategy but where oh where is the evidence of success. Punters are excused for agreeing we are being consistently played off a break. So it gets down to the fact that we all need to STEP UP.

IT TAKES
TWO TO ARGUE NARDINE COLLIER
My dear Mum used to say to me all the time, “it takes two to argue”. She was impossible to argue with, because she just wouldn’t engage. I would be eloquently arguing my point (ranting) and she would just sit there, nodding and smiling. Very frustrating! I am not suggesting the complete stonewall approach is a good dispute resolution technique. Lively discussion is important so long as it doesn’t descend into the sort of anger that becomes rage. So how can we keep what should be a lively debate from becoming a nasty argument? Here are my top 7 tips for having a constructive discussion. We use these techniques in mediation with the aim of having an argument that is productive.
N ard i n e Collie r is an accr edi t ed S pecial i st in Fam ily Law, a M edi at i on S pecial i st and Ma na gi ng Di r ect or of Workp l ac e Legal Sol ut i ons, Cai r ns Med i atio ns and Collier Law yer s.
#1. No yelling or abuse. Nothing good ever comes from that. #2. When stonewalling might be OK – if the other person is trying to pick a fight, then don’t engage. They won’t be able to goad you into a fight if you don’t respond. #3. Trying not to interrupt. In mediation this rule is golden. We give clients a notebook for responses and we make sure everyone gets their turn. #4. Have an agreed process. For example, that I get to talk first and then you reply. If we need a break to think about it we will go away from each other for say 10 minutes to think over what the other person has said. In mediation, we can put together a list
of topics to talk about which might be helpful. #5. Think about what you want to say and how you are going to say it. It is best to state how the other person’s behaviour has made you feel, rather than in a confronting or critical way. For example, “when you did this, it made me feel like this”. What if the other person doesn’t realise that their behaviour is upsetting you, or why? When you attack, its human nature to attack back. Think about how you might frame it in a non critical way. #6 Suggest the solution (if you know it), or a compromise. For example – “if you could be more mindful of……, I will try to not to react like …..” #7 – Try to see the other person’s point of view. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. You don’t have to agree that they are right, you can agree to disagree. Its about knowing why they feel the way they do, what is the situation that pushes their buttons, and are you both willing to modify your behaviour to reduce that conflict? These are just some of the techniques that will work, and they work for all disputes whether it is family or work. Sorting out conflict is the best outcome for everyone especially if it means families stay intact ( which is funny coming from a family lawyer – but there it is! ) M: 0428 526 568 P: (07) 4214 5666 E: nardine@collierlawyers.com.au W: www.collierlawyers.com.au
RENOVATING YOUR KITCHEN?
5 TIPS TO HELP YOU BEFORE YOU START RUSSELL PARNICOTT
Kitchens – the heart of the home. A place where friends and family congregate, meals are prepped and perfected and the hustle of modern life pivots. As the speed and demands of lives has increased, so has the need for our kitchens to be an all in one beautiful, versatile central apex to a home’s activity and functionality. Combine that with the desire for open plan living, there is a lot to consider when choosing to renovate your kitchen. A kitchen renovation is one of the most popular home improvement tasks among homeowners, to increase its value in the market, but also ensure that it works for the family. Here are some important steps to keep in mind before you start: 1. PLAN IT OUT Kitchen renovations are complex, chiefly because there are multiple stages and tradespeople involved, so work with a builder that will organise your trades for you. Talk to your builder, designer or cabinetmaker and ask them to clearly explain how they work and what will happen once your renovation begins.
B r a nc h M a na ge r H IA ( H ous ig Indus t r y A s s oc ia t ion Lt d) 5 A nde r s on St r e e t , M a nunda 4041 2604
This will really help, even if you are organising your own tradespeople, such as plumbers and electricians, to ensure all trades are booked in at the correct stages of the process and all necessary items are bought. Ensuring that each step of the renovation is perfectly coordinated will help to make it a stress-free process with a satisfying outcome. 2. BE BUDGET WISE Establishing a realistic budget for what you want to achieve is an important consideration early in the planning stage. Often a renovation will cost more than most people expect and it’s highly recommended that a working budget be determined before commencing the design process to save both time and effort. Working with an experienced professional with help you plan carefully to achieve the desired result within your budget. Often homeowners are pleasantly surprised by the design ideas, expert tips and added functionality that can be achieved in their new kitchen when working with an experienced kitchen designer or cabinetmaker – so don’t be afraid to ask for their advice.

3. CREATE THE FLOW ZONE Designing a kitchen that not only looks good but also allows for good work and traffic flow is the designer’s challenge. Form and function must work together to ensure a high-caliber result. Traditionally when designing the kitchen space in the past priority was given to creating a working triangle with quite strict measurements between the three main appliances, i.e: sink-cooktop-fridge. The concept is now sometimes referred to as the ‘working zone/s’ or ‘work flow’ but, no matter which term you prefer, the idea is the same: to ensure a smooth workflow between key work zones and appliances.
C i t y L i f e 53 M a g a z i n e
The refrigerator is the most commonly used appliance in kitchen, therefore it needs to be given priority when placing appliances. Ideally it needs to be easily accessible from all areas in the kitchen and from adjoining rooms. 4. SPACE TO SUIT A well-designed storage solution makes the best use of the space available (rather than the most) and provides easy access to items at their point of use. Providing easy access to utensils and kitchenware before and after use means things will be there for you when you need them. While essential to the kitchen’s function, appliance inclusions can differ greatly from kitchen to kitchen and will usually be influenced by budget and space. With a sink available in almost any shape, style or size, it’s almost a case of too much choice. There is no longer a standard sink size with a range of configurations available, including single bowl, double bowl and one-and-ahalf bowl, as well as a variety of drainers an accessories to match. Think about the type of washing up that the sink will be used for so you can ensure the sink is large (or small) enough to suit your needs. 5. LIGHTEN UP A carefully considered lighting scheme is a smart investment. Start with the end in mind. Make sure that lighting is designed into the project near the beginning. Lighting can be used for functional purposes or to set the mood when entertaining. Lighting can dramatically transform the mood of a kitchen as a lifestyle/entertainment area. Good lighting not only makes it easier to work in a kitchen, but allows you to alter the mood for entertaining – ideal for kitchens in an open-plan space. The kitchen is a multi-faceted area of the home and to achieve a professional renovation it requires a realistic timeframe and the engagement of specialists in their field and skilled tradespeople who are licensed and qualified to carry out the work. It’s important to keep in mind that a quality job will not occur in just a few days, as there is plenty of essential behind the scenes work that must happen well before the original kitchen is demolished and the physical part of the renovation commences. Remember that using a professional such as an HIA member, will not only give you expert guidance on the best design, but will also ensure you are getting expert advice on the right products and materials suited to your new kitchen. A carefully planned kitchen renovation will be a pleasure for the enthusiastic cook, make life more convenient for the family and add value to the home.
NEW LOCAL HEARING SOLUTIONS! JOAN N A MAG E E
“We are a local family Practice caring for the hearing healthcare needs of the Cairns community for the past ten years. In 2017, we responded to the needs of our clients on the Tablelands and opened a permanent clinic which has proved very popular and is a huge success. We’ve now opened another clinic at Smithfield with state-of-the-art audiometric equipment enabling locals to access hearing services without the extra trip to town. The clinic has easy parking and should attract people from the Northern Beaches and as far away as Port Douglas, Mossman and the Daintree. Our family Practice welcomes clients to enjoy independent advice, great choice of award-winning products, free inhouse servicing of hearing devices and no obligation trials of the latest hearing technology.

A full suite of audiologic hearing services is available for private clients who can self-refer meaning they do not require a doctor’s referral for services. The clinics hold accreditation with the Commonwealth Hearing Services Program which provides fully subsidized services to eligible Pensioners and Veterans. I’ve recently returned from an international conference in Europe on the global future of hearing healthcare and our team have been appraised of the changes and are offering the latest advice, information and technology to improve hearing and assist with effective communication.
The results clients are experiencing from the new technology are excellent. Most people are hearing well and comfortably from the moment the devices are placed into their ears. Sound is clear and more natural, background noise reduced and even wind noise is almost eliminated. Don’t take my word for it, come in and experience the difference for yourself. The team have a new diagnostic hearing device that can be worn by a client whilst the digital micro-processor collects data regarding the soundscapes that the person experiences in their daily lives. This data is used to determine the level of technology most appropriate for the individual’s listening needs. Some of the devices are able to have the technology level upgraded so you can start at the most affordable level for your budget and step up to higher technology at a later date.
SETTING GOALS FOR A CIVILISED DIVORCE
At Hadley Family Law we pride ourselves in assisting our clients to achieve a civilised divorce and have recognised that goal setting is crucial to achieving a civilised divorce. However, setting goals amidst what is clearly a tumultuous period of your life can be difficult. Here are some tips for setting goals for a civilised divorce. 1. Identify and Decide What You Want Out of Divorce
SHEETAL TIWARI
While it may be easy to get bogged down in your day-to-day responsibilities or finalising the divorce as quickly as possible, we urge you to take a step back and delve deeper into how you envision your future after divorce and set long term goals. For instance: • What type of parenting arrangement would you like for your children? • What type of financial arrangements will you need to make to ensure you have a comfortable lifestyle for yourself and your children? • Do you have the capacity to assume your joint debts? If yes, how much? • The impact on your retirement savings?
Most new hearing devices connect via Bluetooth™ to mobile telephones enabling conversation to be streamed to both ears. This direct hearing is the clearest way to receive sound.
Usually, if you identify the things that you consider important to you in the here and now, it will assist you in identifying what you want for your future.
In some cases, people using this level of technology communicate more effectively than their normal hearing counterparts. I had a client who could hear his brother better on a jetty with the wind blowing than his brother could hear him!
Where you can, identify shared goals with your former spouse, for instance, you may both want comfort and stability for your children.
So, if you want to empower yourself with better communication, more enjoyment of the sounds of life and higher levels of participation in social events contact the team on 4041 7860 to begin experiencing a whole new world of sound today!”
2. Be S.M.A.R.T SMART is world-renowned criteria for goal setting. It stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely. Once you have identified what your longterm goals, put steps in place to achieve it by observing the above criteria.
CAN
• Break your overarching goals down into specific attainable short-term goals. For instance, if your long-term goal is future financial stability, one specific short-term goal may be setting a tighter monthly budget; • Measure your results by monitoring how much you save per month. It could be as simple as saying to yourself, I would like to save X amount per month or transferring said amount into an online saver account; • Ensure your short terms goals are realistic and attainable. In keeping with the above example, do not set an unachievable amount as your initial target. Small achievements can gradually serve as a motivation to challenge yourself further. • Set a timeframe to achieve your shortterm goals to ensure you are proactively progressing toward to your long-term goals, such as, saving X amount in 6 months. • Ensure you specific goals are relevant to your long-term goals; Saving now will ensure your financial stability in the future. 3. Be Flexible Change is inevitable and things may not always go according to plan. That is why it is important to ensure your goals are flexible and you have the ability to adapt your goals should your circumstances change. Flexibility will also allow you to explore alternative ways to achieve your desired result. Finally, it will enable you to review and replace a goal with a new one, if it no longer serves your best interests. In summary, realistic expectations and open-mindedness is key to achieving a civilised divorce. Have any queries? Contact Hadley Family Law on 07 4044 5000. We specialise in civilised resolutions.
