LIFE Grumpy Mum
BRIBING THE BARBARIANS MICHE L L E S TA CPO OL E
They say the darkest hour is just before dawn. The same can be said for backto-school shopping. Before we can bask in the warmth of our beloved offspring returning to that magical place where for at least six hours a day they are someone else’s responsibility, we must first endure school shoe shopping.
ladies footwear section trying a pair of platform sandals on for size, prancing in front of the mirror.
Now this was not my first rodeo. I’ve been doing this for four years now so you’d think I’d have some idea. Sadly though when it comes to my children I’m outnumbered three to one. And they know it.
Master Five, who currently thinks it’s hilarious to hide any chance he gets, was frantically trying to re-stack a tower of shoeboxes that he had toppled in his attempt to squeeze behind them.
So there we are in the third shoe store of the scheduled “back-to-school shop morning” and I’m desperately trying to get the attention of the shop assistants. Why on earth it was our third shop is beyond me, but never the less I had a conforming black leather shoe in hand waving it above my head in the hope that I am seen through the throng of customers. And then I spot her. Mother Superior. Like some demi-god parting the sea she elegantly moved through the crowd, her boys in tow. One, two, three, four of them. And when she stopped and spoke she had their undivided attention. “Now boys, this is the only shoe shop we are going to today. The shoes have to last all year, so choose wisely. No velcro, only laces, and they must be black. And remember that I have the final say.” And just like that her impeccably neat and well-behaved group dispersed quietly and without argument. I was in awe. This mum had her sh*t together. I looked around at my unruly mob. Little Miss Eight, who I’m convinced is really a teenager in disguise, was in the

Master Six, with his trusty Lego men in hand, was sprawled on his back at the entrance to the store and hollering “Look Mum, I’m a snow angel!”
I caught the eye of Mother Superior and asked what her secret was. “Ice-cream,” she said. “I bribe them with ice-cream.” I laughed as I let out a sigh of relief. It seems that even the most organized among us resort to bribery to make it through this barbaric ritual. Inspired by my encounter with my new mother-in-arms I barrelled through the remainder of the morning, ignoring the protests and squabbles that come with three siblings spending six weeks of school holidays together in close confinement. After I loaded the boot of the car with shopping bags containing enough pencils and glue sticks to keep Faber Castel in business well into next century, I turned to my tired, grumpy and dirt streaked little cherubs. “Let’s get an ice-cream,” I suggested. It seems we’ve all got the same arsenal. Mother Superior’s may just be a little more polished. michelle@cairnslifemag.com.au

John
SCHILLING WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER PHOTO BY MICK FUHRIMANN
Division 2 Councillor John Schilling is first to admit that even in his current position he’s a builder. John has a talent for spotting hitherto unrecognised opportunities for community facility improvement and visualising the finished product and making it reality. In 2012, he noticed a strip of land behind White Rock State School, an undeveloped, unused boggy paddock of 2-3 hectares. “White Rock had no sporting grounds of its own and the local kids can’t get across the road to Edmonton after school. I saw potential on this wasted land, to construct something the local kids could utilise. After Council negotiated a 30+30 lease from the State, John’s vision for the new sporting grounds facilities is set to make a huge difference to the community. John goes on to tell me that the Walker Road Precinct project is coming to fruition now, and soccer will soon have more fields than before and rugby league will soon follow suit, with doubling of capacity for both those groups to meet future needs. “I was approached with a request for a Men’s Shed. I knew someone who had an old shed on a farm property. It turned out to be just the ticket, and the members have done a great job obtaining grants, which, with the help of numerous donations of equipment, has given the guys a great start, and the Shed is thriving. “Council have now bought that whole parcel of land for future growth,” adds John.
Cairns Motorcycle Club was having trouble with its finances, and volunteers were investing their own money and machinery to keep it afloat. “With $100,00 from Council, a huge donation of fill from a developer and donations of machinery use, in all about $300,000 worth of improvements were effected. “The 250 young motor bike riders buzzing around our cane lanes, and up and down the cycle tracks and they have a great practice and competition facility under the control of a qualified supervisor,” says John. It’s clear there’s a lot going on in Division 2. “Edmonton’s swimming pool was leaking, costing Council a huge amount of money in ongoing repairs and maintenance, so we sold the old house on site, and the money’s going into a new pool to be sited on the Sugarworld property, a popular choice of the community. “South Cairns gymnastics facility is about 20 years old and was at capacity with almost 500 juniors. “Our plans will more than double capability. Together with a new bank guarantee to replace an old one with a previous council, and another grant coming up, if we can find a little bit over in the new financial year, they will be well on their way to a brand new, state of the art facility, probably the only one in the region that can host State titles and other significant events.

“
Our plans will more than double capability.
”
John tells me of recent discussions with the Cairns Jockey Club, directed at making Cannon Park financially viable. “When you share use, the finances start to work with the funding streams, and we’re looking at various options in that regard, including an outdoor performance centre for visiting bands and up to 20,000 people. “I’ve been with the Matsumoto Karate Academy since the Eighties, and we were the first port of call for security for the innumerable visiting musicians performing at Cairns Showground: Cliff Richard and Dire Straits spring to mind. I recall Mark Knopfler playing in pouring rain, and I was frozen in horror, waiting for the seemingly inevitable electrocution,” John laughs at the memory. “Bands don’t use the Showground any longer, due to increased residential population in the vicinity, whereas Canon Park faces the industrial area of Portsmith,” he added. I had been told on good authority that in a previous interview, John brought his own avocado to the lunchtime meeting, and I felt compelled to ask why as we parted. “It’s instant dressing if the salad served is dry.” How creative, and definitely worthy of Pinterest. I left Council’s café conjuring visions of this dapper Councillor cum Third Dan Karate Teacher smashing a defenceless avocado with a silent but deadly shuto. Now that would have been a good photo.

WITH THE WIND IN HIS SAILS JAI TOOLEY Shaking the young sailor’s hand as we parted ways, I harboured afirm conviction that I was shaking the hand of a future Olympian. Proud parents, Laurie and Karen Tooley, recently returned to their Edmonton home from the Gold Coast, where Jai competed in the Australian Nacra Nationals, taking out fifth place overall and first place Junior. At just 16 years old, Jai found himself amongst predominantly adult competition in his first Nationals. Jai is completely self-taught. He learned the art of sailing from watching and listening, including online sailing videos, attends gym regularly, and practices rigorously alongside his school work. Fleet Captain of the Cairns Yacht Club’s dinghy division, Dr Scott Davis, welcomed Jai as one of the first four youths to participate in the resurgence of junior sailing in the Club. “Jai’s a very active member of the Club, with all the qualities of a youth leader. His skills are on the up and up, and I’m very happy to see him join the State Development Squad,” says Scott. “My parents own a game boat, and although I grew up on the water in Cairns, fishing, snorkelling and so on, we were never involved in sailing. But then I participated in a school sailing team venture four years ago at school, and that was the start of it. I was 12,” says Jai. Trinity Anglican School Acting Director of Outdoor Education,

Darren Osmond, said it was somewhat rare, in a person of Jai’s age, to witness the level of commitment to, and passion for something the way Jai has for sailing, so it was no surprise that Jai has already been involved in several high level sailing events. By providence, Jai’s usual sailing buddy, Jai Miller, shares the same name. A team for over a year, they were disappointed to beunable to sail together at the Nationals, as their combined weight was below the minimum specified for registration. “I invited World Champion Jamie Leitner to join me. I had sailed with, and learnt a lot from his cousin Mark at Ellis Beach on a Nacra F18 and enjoyed the boat and the experience so much, I bought an F18 myself,” says Jai.
For the uninitiated like myself, the Nacra F18 Infusion is a sleekcatamaran, named after the infusion technology used in construction to make it more suitable for high level sailing events. Jai and Jai are navigating their way to the Youth World Championships, the first step on their journey to the Olympics. “There’s a selection event for the World Youth Championships this Easter at Lake Macquarie, the Nacra 15 Nationals,” says Jai, an active member of the Cairns Yacht Club. Team Jai have just bought a Nacra 15, which is the new International Sailing Federation youth catamaran. “The ISF have stated anyone under eighteen can sail it for the first two years, boy or girl, but as of 2018 the team of two must comprise a boy and girl. So, Jai and I have just this one chance now to be selected this year. There were about 21 boats competing last year, but they’re looking to have a few more this year,” says Jai. An engaging personality with a winning smile fit for a future Olympian medallist, Jai’s face lights up when I ask whether future aspirations include the America’s Cup, leaving me in no doubt that goal is also firmly ensconced on Jai’s To Do list.

Hot 8 Brass Band
24 February - 4 March
Friday 3 March
Set in 1960, this boulevard comedy was a smash hit in Paris and London where it ran for six years. Bernard is planning a romantic weekend with his chic Parisian mistress in his charming converted French farmhouse, whilst his wife is away. He has arranged for a cordon bleu cook to prepare gourmet delights, and has invited his best friend Robert, along to provide the alibi. It’s fool proof; what could possibly go wrong?
The story of the Hot 8 Brass Band has been one of tragedy and triumph. Over the years the Hot 8’s ranks have been decimated by the deaths of four original members due to street violence, illness and the life-altering turning point; Hurricane Katrina. After being evacuated, displaced, and scattered across the country, the band regrouped and began touring the United States, opening for popular R&B artist Lauren Hill among others.

Their new album Shift bounced to Top 5 on the ARIA album chart, but it’s not a upbeat record explains vocalist and guitarist for the trio, Chris Cheney; “It’s not a feel-good record,” Cheney confirms, “but it’s a good record… this record is deeply personal. HOT 8 BRASS BAND The Tanks Arts Centre will launch its 2017 Jazz Up North series on March 3 with a street parade/brass band party ensemble direct from the New Orleans, USA. Grammy-nominated eight-piece street band Hot 8 Brass Band will embark on their first Australian tour next month, bringing with them a truly unique and undiluted energy of the New Orleans ‘Second Line’ parades.
HOT 8 BRASS BAND JAZZ UP NORTH 2017
One of the great New Orleans acts, Hot 8 have transcended genres and trends throughout their twenty year career, delighting crowds with their rambunctious mix of hip hop, funk and inimitable Big Easy jazz, and selling out strings of headlines and festivals with their jubilant New Orleans-style parade. “Expect a trip to New Orleans,” Hot 8 band leader and tuba player Bennie Pete says. “Cairns fans can stay right where they are and we’ll bring New Orleans and the essence of the city and its culture to them, signed, sealed and delivered!” Amidst the hype and world tours, Hot 8 have pushed through a barely imaginable series of trials. The devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the separate deaths of five band members, and the horror of trumpeter Terrell “Burger” Batiste losing his legs, have tested these men almost to breaking point.
FRIDAY 3 MARCH Emerging from the New Orleans parade culture over 20 years ago, the Hot 8 Brass Band takes a relentless approach to rhythm and brass. Ingenious arrangements and an utterly infectious groove splicing traditional jazz, soul and hip hop with creative original songs this is the real Louisiana deal. The players in Hot 8 grew up together and maintain strong, family-like bonds. Their funk style is a blend of influences with elements of contemporary r&b, rap and a Deep South variation, ‘bounce’. The band has released two of their own records and featured in two of Spike Lee’s documentaries, bringing them national and international exposure helping to fuel a steady touring schedule.
Hot 8 Brass Band can also be purchased as part of Tanks’ music series. Purchase 5-7 shows at 30% off each show Purchase 8-10 shows at 40% off each show COST: $36.75/$31.50 CONC (PG) VENUE: Tank 5 SHOW STARTS: 7:30pm seated / standing
“I remember forming the band back when we all members in our high school band,” explains Bennie. “It was something to take us away from being involved in the negativity that was all around us in the inner city of New Orleans. It’s a dream come true, and for us to be still around touring more than ever before is truly a blessing.” Despite overcoming struggles that many other artists do not usually experience, the group have stuck it out and forged a stellar career, having performed and collaborated with artists from Lauryn Hill to Mos Def to the Blind Boys of Alabama. In 2013 the group were nominated for a Grammy for their second album ‘The Life and Times Of…’. “Most of our tunes have a message, even if it has no lyrics,” Bennie says. What we ultimately try to bring through our music is the message that no matter what life brings, if you have faith, vision and persistence – we can make it through.” The band’s Australian circuit links up with a massive US, UK, Australasia and European tour to celebrate their newest record On The Spot. The new record has its roots firmly in live performance, and in true Hot 8 style it pairs hardhitting, heart-on-sleeve sentiment with party-fuelling beats, hooks and grooves. On The Spot refers to the rare moment in a New Orleans parade when the band stops to take a break but keeps playing around with their instruments to please the crowd. When they’re completely in the moment they sync up and the magic happens, and a new tune is created. “We love to improvise during our shows, mixing the set up with songs from our past and present and wrapping it all in to one - we call it the total package,” Bennie says.

Bungalow Hotel 200 Aumuller Street Ph: 4051 3277 www.bungalowhotel.com.au
Thanks to a $3 million investment from its new owners, one of Cairns’ most iconic hotels has been transformed into one the of city’s most exciting venues. Built in the early 1970s, the Bungalow Hotel has undergone its most significant overhaul in its history, and locals and visitors are loving it. The new-look hotel has been completely renovated into a modern facility while still retaining its old-style charm. “It’s a total transformation,” said co-owner Patricia Gibson, who purchased the hotel in 2009 with husband David and son Stewart. “It’s been a Cairns icon for many years, and we wanted to revamp the old girl into a modern venue.” The hotel had changed hands several times over the years, but the fresh eyes of the Gibson family, along with their 30year background of operating hotels, has seen one of the most impressive renovations of a hotel in Cairns history. “It was originally called the Bungalow Hotel, and the name was changed in 1989 to the Westcourt Tavern,” Patricia said. “We’ve renamed it the Bungalow Hotel. We wanted to return it to its former glory.”

Inside the venue, the 150-seat restaurant ‘Plantations’ combines the classic style of the Hamptons with the island influence of the Bahamas. Its white walls, dark hardwood floors, Tommy Bahama fabrics and cane furnishings perfectly suit the Cairns’ tropical lifestyle. And to top it off, the food is divine. Premium steaks, local seafood, delicious pizzas and their hugely popular Smokey Spit are part of its new menu, which features local produce as well as its own home-grown fresh herbs and vegetables. The original timber silky oak in the Bungalow’s sports/public bar has been restored while modern touches have been added, including comfortable furniture, multiple screens for sporting enthusiasts, Keno facilities and a TAB. Also added is a new state-of-the-art gaming room with 45 machines and plenty of in-house jackpots to be won. The hotel also features a sensational covered timber deck, surrounded by lush landscaping, which includes extra TV screens. A revamped

Sports Bar menu makes it the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening. The Bungalow has a number of fabulous function areas to cater for all occasions such as wedding receptions, corporate events, anniversaries, birthdays and family celebrations. While the Gibsons are highly experienced in the industry, they’re also hands-on at the Bungalow, putting quality at the forefront. “We strive to ensure our guests love the revised Bungalow,” Patricia said. “And we’re thrilled to be able to bring the old girl back to her former glory.” This renovation is truly something that you must see in person. As word is spreading about the gorgeous job the Gibson family has done, more and more Cairns residents are choosing to make the Bungalow their local, and we suggest joining them while you can still get a seat!

Over the last decade the number of men choosing to groom their body hair by trimming, shaving or waxing has increased in droves. A trend reflected by the number of male cliental frequenting all three Cairns Wax Room studios. Although back waxing remains the most common male waxing treatment, legs, chest, brow grooming and brazilians are also very popular. Unfortunately the type of hair that many men curse most on a daily basis, the hair of the face and neck, are a no go zone for waxing. This is why the arrival of IPL hair removal at The Wax Room is so exciting. Men can now choose to permanently reduce the amount of facial hair they need to maintain, whether it is on the jaw and cheek or only on the neck region. Choosing IPL hair removal will mean razor bumps and ingrown hairs will be dramatically lessoned as will the frequency and difficulty of shaving. Another bonus
many are yet to realise is if hair is treated prior to turning white, a future white five o’clock shadow can be avoided! IPL applications are not limited to the face alone. It can be used on the body as well as the face, by both men and woman. The treatment itself is relatively painless and clients can continue to shave as normal between treatments so having to grow out hair is unnecessary. IPL works by the light emitted during the flash from the IPL device being absorbed by the melanin (the pigment responsible for the colour of the hair) in the hair. The light is then converted to thermal energy that destroys the hair by cauterising the vessels which nourish the follicle and enable the hair to grow. EDUCATION FOR ALL C AT H O L I C E D UCATI O N SE R V I CE S – S TUDE NT SE R V I CE S WORDS BY JANIE BAR TON PHOTO BY SILVIA MOGOROVICH
Every student, no matter what ability or disability they may have, deserves the best support they can get throughout their education, which is why Cairns Catholic schools have dedicated student support services. All Catholic schools in the Cairns Diocese have access to a large team of specialists who support students of all abilities to achieve their best educational outcomes. “We create a caring and supportive environment that’s inclusive to every student,” said Tom O’Donnell, Catholic Education Services (CES) Director of Student Services. “Young people are coming to schools with diverse needs, and we want to enable all those young people to access the best education they require and deserve.” CES’ Student Services team includes speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, counsellors and a variety of other professionals who support students in all of the Cairns Diocese’s 29 schools and colleges. “We also have educational officers and inclusive educational teachers

who work with the schools and the learning support teachers, who are based in schools, to work with young people who need learning support.” Inclusive practices are fundamental to the ethos of Cairns Catholic schools and form part of the pastoral, spiritual, intellectual, physical, cultural and social development of all students. “It is about trying to engage young people to give them the best opportunity,” Mr O’Donnell said. “Our aim is to enable all young people who, for whatever reason might find school a bit difficult, to be in a caring and supportive environment.” CES’ concept of inclusion is based on the provision of a collaborative, supportive and engaging educational environment, where all students are given the opportunities to learn and achieve to their potential. “Every student deserves the right to a good education,” Mr O’Donnell said.
A PRINCIPAL WITH VISION ST M A RY ’ S COL L E G E WORDS BY JANIE BAR TON St Mary’s Catholic College 53 Anderson Road, Woree Ph: 4054 6144 www.smcc.qld.edu.au
As the new principal of St Mary’s Catholic College, Wayne Wood brings to Cairns, along with his wife and three children, experience, qualifications and the vision to earn the St Mary’s recognition as a Catholic school that stands to the forefront of schooling opportunities in Far North Queensland. Mr Wood has been appointed to St Mary’s after undertaking five years at Good Shepherd College in Mt Isa. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Education and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Catholic Education from James Cook University. He is due to complete his Masters of Theology in early 2017. “I see St Mary’s as becoming a leading school in Catholic education,” he said. “I’d like to see it become a guide - like a lighthouse - for other schools. “The staff and I will continue working with what has already been planned strategically for the college, but I have a few simple core things that I feel need to be in place for those strategies to happen.” Mr Wood has six specific visions for the college. The first is to create a positive learning culture for all, not just the students. “To me, an effective school is a place where everyone is learning,” he said. “It’s important that teachers join in, too, and regularly share good teaching practices with each other.” His second is collegiality. “From my experience, the quality of relationships within a school has a significant impact on its success,” he said. “I’ve already noticed that St Mary’s staff get on very well with each other and readily share their skills and knowledge. This is important as it sets the tone for our students. “Wat also really impressed me about the staff at St Mary’s is how they speak so highly of their students. There is a strong bond between
CairnsLife 30 Magazine
staff and students. I think relationships are the key to doing great things at school and I think St Mary’s already has that.” The third of Mr Wood’s visions is to maintain the willingness to explore new ideas, and the fourth is ensuring St Mary’s continues to be a welcoming environment for all. “Schools are full of different people: teachers, parents and students,” he said. “We have different ethnicities, abilities, interests and backgrounds, and valuing these differences makes the college a much more enriching place to learn.” His fifth vision is ensuring extra-curricular activities continue to be part of the norm at the school. “Community service, sport, music and the arts are all so important to the development of a child,” he said. “This is something I am passionate about and I see it happening so well at St Mary’s. Our college is a much richer place with all these extra opportunities.” Mr Wood’s sixth vision is to foster a culture of celebration at St Mary’s. “There are so many pressures these days mounted on schools to improve across so many areas,” he said. “I have found that this drive to improve can be quite relentless. And so, it only makes sense that rest and play are built into the College. I think it’s important we celebrate our successes, however big or small. “I also think it’s important in Catholic schools that we present an authentic and conceptualised Catholic education, so we want to make sure that we ‘re constantly looking within and reflecting on the way we present faith to our students,” he said. “We want to make sure that it’s a relevant and new, but still stays strong to the Catholic tradition.”
FULL STEAM AHEAD M AC K I L L O P C ATHO L I C CO LL E G E WORDS BY JANIE BAR TON PHOTO BY SILVIA MOGOROVICH MacKillop Catholic College 1 MacKillop Road, Mount Peter Ph: 4045 5262 www.mackillopcatholiccollege.qld.edu.au
It’s onwards and upwards for MacKillop Catholic College, which is now in its second year of bringing high-quality Catholic education to the residents of the city’s southern corridor. After a banner first year of operation, the Mount Peter school has now more than doubled its enrolment for the second year as Stage 2 of the multi-million dollar project gets underway. “It’s fabulous,” principal Luke Reed said. “Last year, our first year, we started with 86 students, and this year we’ve started with 176, which is just great. “We’ve had a fantastic first year, not only in learning outcomes but also in the sense of belonging. We hear quite often from students and families that they’re delighted to be part of the MacKillop College community.” The college now has two Prep and two Year 1 classes, along with one class each in Years 2, 3 and 4. “We also have a waiting list for Prep students and Year 4 classes, but we do have a small number of vacancies in Years 1, 2 and 3,” Mr Reed said. “Our whole school community is delighted to be welcoming new students and families into the school.” The college will be a multi-stream school when complete and is expected to have enrolments of more than 1500 students, making it similar in size to Catholic Education’s other P-12 college, St Andrew’s Catholic College at Redlynch, which has 1700 enrolments this year.
CairnsLife 31 Magazine
MacKillop has also increased its staff community this year and has commenced Stage 2 of its building program. This second stage includes eight new classrooms, new library facilities, a staff preparation area as well as additional car parking at a cost of almost $4.5 million. “It’s very exciting,” Mr Reed said. “We expect to have that completed and ready to go by late August, early September, so we’ll be able to utilise those spaces in the last term this year. “2017 is also very important in terms of our design planning for Stage 1 of our secondary division. Even though construction for that is still two years away the design stage is really critical, so we’re going to invest a lot of energy and thought around developing our design concept for secondary schooling at McKillop. “We want to be as innovative as possible as well as accommodate the best pedagogy -the best way of learning and teaching - for the secondary experience. We think we made a great start to that in primary, and we’re determined that will continue right through to Year 12.” While he’s thrilled with the schools immediate success and upcoming progress, teachers and staff are also focused on the importance of sharing the Catholic faith throughout the school community. “We have a responsibility to use the gifts we have been provided by God to help our students,” he said. “We want to give them a solid foundation and the skills to help them progress in life to become the people God created them to be.”

AN EDUCATIONAL MILESTONE TROPICAL NORTH LEARNING ACADEMY TRINITY BEACH STATE SCHOOL WORDS BY JANIE BARTON PHOTO BY SILVIA MOGOROVICH Trinity Beach State School Wewak St, Trinity Beach Ph: 4057 1444 www. trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au
A new purpose-built senior learning centre at Trinity Beach State School (TBSS) is opening up a whole new world of learning and a wealth of world-class programs for its students. The new building offers unrivalled learning opportunities for students of the school, which is part of the Tropical North Learning Academy, an innovative partnership between the school, Smithfield State High School and James Cook University. Tropical North Learning Academy is a unique alliance designed to present world-class programs for primary school students through to high school and then university, with the aim of engaging young minds to help them grow and succeed. It is one of only a few partnerships of its type anywhere in Australia and is considered to be an educational milestone. The new learning centre at TBSS has 12 state-of-the-art classrooms, including science rooms, a computer lab, professional learning areas, outdoor learning areas and a Makerspace room where students develop creative projects using materials and tools they may not normally have access to.
CairnsLife 33 Magazine
“This new centre is just fantastic,” said TBSS principal Matthew Denzin, “It’s not only providing amazing opportunities for students, it also value adds to the educational opportunities available for them. “The idea is to look at ways students can be innovative and creative with all sorts of materials and technology. We’re going to have drones, robotics, 3-D printers and hands-on materials in the Makerspace room. We want to create opportunities for students to expand their minds. “We’re also looking at ways in which we can include programs around science, sustainability, young entrepreneurs and the Internet of Things technology (the connection of devices other than phones and computers to the internet, such as cars and kitchen appliances).” The school works closely with Smithfield State High School’s junior deputy principal Paul Charles, who is a driving force in the partnership between the high school and TBSS. “Our new centre is a big investment, but we recognise the need for these quality resources,” Mr Denzin said. “We believe in engaging students in learning experiences that foster their independence, creativity and the connectedness that is needed in today’s world and in our global future.”

We only have one life to live, which is why it’s so important to feel happy, content and whole as a person. While it can be difficult to battle problems and move forward to have the life you always wanted, there is a way to improve your circumstances. You can live your life exactly the way you dreamt it to be, and it’s easier than you may think. All you need to do is talk with Bec Rooke of Innovation Wellness. After years of studying and getting degrees in psychology, social sciences and counselling and working for years with various health services to help people get their lives back on track, Bec found a more holistic way to help others. She studied alternative therapies and now combines them with practical and psychological techniques to help people overcome all types of adversity such as depression, losing a loved one, posttraumatic stress disorder, phobias, anger,
stress management or for those who want to kick a bad habit or to simply just feel happier again. “I believe that alternative practices can and do contribute to our overall health and wellbeing every day,” she said. “I believe in helping people look after themselves holistically and authentically.” The born-and-bred Cairns local has worked for years with children, adolescents and adults throughout the region in many different areas. She was a successful school guidance counsellor, a health service officer and worked in a psychiatric mental health hospital as a provisional psychologist before starting Innovation Wellness in 2016. Bec offers a range of alternative therapies such as Hypnotherapy, Access Consciousness, Neuro Linguistic Programming, Transformational Coaching, Time Line Therapy and Emotional Freedom Technique, to name just a few. While she works out of an office, clients feel like they’ve stepped into a warm home environment when they visit her. Her compassionate and nurturing nature shows through as she consults with clients to help decide the best course of action to take to conquer their problem. Her greatest joy is when clients begin to feel better within themselves again. “I love seeing the fantastic results my clients get,” she said. “I love helping people and going on their journey together with them as they clear their blockages and begin to move forward.”

WIDE ANGLED VIEW OF DOCTORS AT PLAY WORDS BY SU ZY G RINTE R PHOT O BY PHO TO HO L IC S TU D IO
Sometimes it’s hard to imagine doctors have a life outside consultations and surgery, but it appears they do, and their diverse pastimes have been captured creatively in the eyeopening photographic exhibition ‘Doc’s Day Off’. Following the success last year of Practitioners at Play, a “witty exposé of legal professionals in their private lives”, Barrister Joseph Jacobs, and Tablelands solicitor Danielle Hodgens decided to focus their sights on the medical profession. Paediatrician and spare time photographer, Dr Tim Warnock, and Psychiatrist Dr Paul Trott were approached with a view to coordinating representatives from the medical field to participate. George Kneipp, involved in the original photography project, has again joined the photography team. An expression of interest was sent out to the local medics through Cairns Private Hospital, the senior staff medical association at Cairns Hospital and the Docs for Docs newsletter for general practitioners in the region. A wide diversity of spare time interests was exposed, from mountain and road biking to beekeeping, golf, canoeing, music, photography, art, beer brewing, sculpting, sailing, diving, woodworking, horticulture, paddle boarding, baseball, goat breeding, kite surfing, theology study, tennis, horse riding, surf lifesaving, astronomy, and philanthropic pursuits, to name but a few. Photography started in Early June, and for the next six months the team dedicated most of their free weekends travelling from the Daintree to Mourilyan to capture their subjects doing what they love best. Chris Morrey, orthopaedic surgeon, is pictured with his wine collection, gynaecologist/obstetrician Natalie Keisey-
Calding is captured shopping in Tea Lily with her children, her husband sitting patiently in a corner. Mike Mansfield is seen casting a net at Russell Heads, plastic surgeon Isolde Hertess boxing, and anaesthetist Peter Hammer with the violins he tunes. Richard Heazlewood, an honorary paediatrician, rides a tractor with his grandchildren, while Paediatric Cardiologist Ben Reeves is photographed brewing beer; Alan McMahon sings a victor’s song with the adult Rugby Union team he coaches. GP Ian Cole is photographed playing bass guitar with his band Herding Cats, while psychiatrist Neva Shebini performs with grace and style as an aerial ribbonist. Medical director Gavin Le Sueur is pictured kite surfing and surgeon Alan de Costa plays tennis with GP Peter Boyd. “We have Liz Chappel riding a horse, Lin de Souza volunteering at Rosie’s Food Van, orthopaedic surgeon David Shepherd swimming with his dog, Bingo, at Crystal Cascades, Mark Wenitong playing his guitar, Psychiatrist Una Stephenson weaving beanies, and Rod Catton with one of his Indigenous artefacts; his love being Indigenous history,” says Tim. The photographs combine the doctors’ interests with an occasional sardonic hint at their specialty. “Of course, we had to photograph cycling team Greg and Katrina Starmer on the Cardiac Challenge, and we have a photograph of Ken Petit, a retired surgeon, dressed up in his theatre gear, carving a roast,” laughs Tim. Doc’s Day Off will be at The Tanks from 3 February to 4 March. It’s good to see doctors trying some of their own medicine.

NEW HEARING – NEW YOU! JO A NNA M A G EE
Hearing is one of our most important senses, and we often take it for granted. Our ability to hear allows us to communicate and enjoy life through music, sounds and conversation.
“Hearing loss creeps up on you; it’s kind of insidious. You don’t notice it until something happens; often relationships are impacted because there’s a barrier to communication.”
However, we often forget that this delicate sense can be lost. Exposure to damaging noise and other factors can deteriorate our hearing on a daily basis. While hearing damage is irreversible, it’s important to consult a specialist immediately if you have any sudden loss of hearing, experience ear pain or have tinnitus (ringing) on one side only.
“The stigma of those ugly beige bananas is a thing of the past. The advances in hearing technology are outstandingly smart and hearing aids are totally concealed. These days you can even use your iPhone as an external microphone to amplify sound directly to your hearing aid.”
Don’t let hearing loss disrupt your lifestyle! It’s time to make the resolution to take charge of your hearing. AUDiOHEALTH’s experienced clinicians can conduct tests and help you take appropriate measures to protect your hearing before it is lost for good.
J oanna i s an accr e d ite d ‘E A R ’ with the Ro yal Au st ra lia n C o lle g e o f Ge neral P ract i t i o ne r s (R A C GP) a n d is invo l ved i n ed u c a tio n a l s e m in a r s for doct o rs, n u rses a n d a llie d h e a lth pr ofe ssi o n al s.
“If you make the New Year’s resolution to do something about your hearing – to get fully involved in life and fully participate – not only do you improve relationships but you enjoy a better quality of life both physically and mentally,” says Joanna Magee, Director of AUDiOHEALTH. “Hearing is one of our most neglected senses. So few people seek hearing assistance when they need it. Hearing loss can make people look or feel old, so people are afraid to face it or be seen seeking help. Statistics have shown it can take up to seven years before people take any action after being diagnosed with hearing loss.” “Research has also shown that the part of the brain that’s used for understanding speech starts to diminish; there’s a cognitive decline. fMRI scans have shown that the neuropathways of the brain strengthen once you have amplification. Neglecting it can lead to feelings of isolation, depression, cognitive decline, dementia.”

Whether you’re looking for a hearing test, or the latest hearing aids, you can rest assured that you are in sound hands with AUDiOHEALTH’s outstanding service and support. “Three generations of our family are in hearing care. We understand hearing loss because five members of our family have experienced it. Hearing is a very personal sense; we know what people are going through when facing hearing loss.” “We are an independent boutique clinic valuing service and offering more choice of innovative products.” Signs of Hearing Loss: • Ringing in the ears – indicates nerve damage • Asking people to repeat things • Cranking up the volume on TV and music • Misunderstanding conversations – often missing beginnings and endings of words. ST.VALENTINE’S DAY AND SHARING THE LOVE There are many factors which influence intimate relationships for a couple. One factor is that of male erectile dysfunction, E.D. which is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection to be able to complete satisfactory intercourse. This is usually called impotence. In order to achieve an erection, it is necessary to have blood flowing in to the penis faster than it flows out, a bit like filling a bucket which has holes in it. The single most contributing factor to cause impotence is smoking and a number of studies have shown a direct relationship between the sudden onset of impotence and heart disease within the subsequent six months. As men age their natural level of male hormones (testosterone) decreases. They may put on weight, develop diabetes or have high cholesterol. They may need to take various medications or have other physical conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes or prostate problems or may suffer from depression all of which can contribute. A visit to the General Practitioner is the first step in seeking treatment for this condition. The doctor will take a history, perform an examination and perhaps arrange for blood tests or other investigations. Treatment may involve the use of tablets which may be taken before intercourse is likely to take place or alternatively, some medication can be taken daily in a low dose which allows more spontaneity, rather like being “on the pill”. It is important to note that a recent study has shown that 77% of tablets purchased on the internet have been shown to be counterfeit and that 80% contain less than half the dose of active ingredient that they claim.
Some men may find assistance with a Vacuum Enhancement Device (VED) which is rather like a bicycle pump which is placed over the penis to “pump it up” and then a rubber ring is placed at the base of the penis to prevent it going down. It is important that the ring is only left in place for about half an hour and not forgotten! These devices are somewhat cumbersome and some people find they lack spontaneity. Another alternative is to inject a substance in to the side of the penis which increases the blood flow. It is important not to “overdose” on these substances as the erection may not go down within half to one hour as intended and permanent damage may result. The injection technique should be taught by the doctor and a test dose given to avoid that. Usually the injections are supplied as a single dose. The usual cost for a single dose on prescription is around $15.There are some companies on the internet which supply “cocktails” of medications to be injected at grossly inflated prices or have annual subscriptions for supply. Finally, in some cases it may be necessary for the man to have a penile prosthesis inserted. This is a device which is inserted by a surgical procedure and works using a hydraulic system where the device may be inflated to create an erection and deflated when not required. A FOCUS ON POSITIVE OUTCOMES WO R DS BY JANIE BAR TO N
While Response Oncology has opened less than a year ago, it has already helped hundreds of cancer suffers in Cairns and district, and now even more people are benefiting from the practice thanks to the addition of medical oncologist Dr Samuel Jones. Dr Jones joined the team of specialist oncologists at Response, which includes Drs Ariyanto Pramana, Luke McGhee and Ritwik Pandey as well as compassionate nurses and support staff, in January. “While growing up, I was always interested in curing cancer and wanted to help find a cure,” Dr Jones said. “As time went on, I felt I’d be best treating patients rather than working in laboratories. “Patients are greatly impacted by a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment, and it’s extremely rewarding when you see good outcomes.” Dr Jones attained his Bachelor of Science degree in 2003 from the University of Queensland, majoring in neuroscience and biomedical science, and his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the same university in 2007. “Response Oncology is expanding relatively quickly, and it’s obviously very popular with patients,” he said. “It’s a collegial atmosphere, and I really enjoy working with my colleagues there.”
He has previously worked with Response Oncology’s Dr Pramana and Dr McGhee, who are radiation oncologists, and Dr Panddy, who specialises in chemo therapy. “What I like best about my job is the patient interaction and the satisfaction of helping patients with their treatments,” Dr Jones said. “It can be emotionally and intellectually challenging, but seeing good outcomes makes it all worthwhile.” Patient’s treatments at Response Oncology are usually quick, so often a patient will see one of the practice’s doctors and start their treatment within a week or so, which gives them great peace of mind. To add to the holistic service provided by the practice, a cancer specialist nurse, Barb Kelly, and an experienced social worker, Carol-Ann Silson, are also part of the team. Both provide support and advice to patients and their families, helping them deal with the emotions and distress that can sometimes follow a diagnosis. Having a cancer is hard enough” said practice manager Darcy Inglis. “We try to make the service as accessible and easy to navigate as possible for our patients.” Response Oncology Level 1 Wallamurra Towers 189-191 Abbott Street, Cairns Ph: 4242 5020 www.responseoncology.com.au

DR ELIZABETH JACKSON WORDS BY JANIE BARTON
Level 1 Wallamurra Towers, 189 Abbott Street, Cairns City QLD 4870 Ph: 07 4041 5081 F: 07 4084 0596 www.drelizabethjackson.com Clinic Opening Hours Monday – Thursday: 9AM – 5PM Friday: 9AM – 12PM Saturday - Sunday: Closed
Making women’s health care more affordable and accessible is a passion of Dr Elizabeth Jackson and her specialised team, which is why they’ve just launched two new services designed to make health care easier for women in Cairns and the district.
Women can just call Dr Jackson’s office and make an appointment.
The first new service benefits uninsured women with pre-cancer changes to their cervix, a common gynaecological condition. Dr Jackson now performs LLETZ (large loop excision of transformation zone) procedure, which is treatment for abnormal cervix, under local anesthetic at the Cairns Central Day Hospital. This means patients don’t have a long waiting time and enjoy a significant savings.
Australia’s Pap smear screen program is undergoing a major change in the next few months, and Dr Jackson and her team are already aligned with the upcoming change. Pap smears will now include screening for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).
“Uninsured patients tend to have higher expenses for day hospital fees, but we’ve negotiated with Cairns Central Day Surgery to help us make this an affordable choice,” Dr Jackson said. “It’s also so much more accessible for patients. “It’s frustrating for us to see uninsured women who need the procedure waiting many months for treatment. We’re seeing an increasing number of patients with abnormal Pap smears, and it can be very distressing for them to wait, so we want to make this more affordable for them so they can get treatment much sooner.” Dr Jackson, who is a well-respected gynaecologist and obstetrician, said the procedure is comfortable, takes about 15 minutes and is performed in very safe conditions at the Cairns Central Day Surgery. “The patient is not in the hospital very long at all,” she said. “They can have the procedure done in an afternoon, and they don’t require to be fasted or have another person drive them to and from the hospital.” The second new service Dr Jackson is launching is a Nurse Review, which includes a woman’s check-up including contraception review and Pap smears with gynaecological nurse Jodi for just $50 without the need of a doctor’s referral.
CairnsLife 45 Magazine
“Jodi and I are working together to ensure the high-quality of gynaecological services are easily available and affordable,” Dr Jackson said.
“HPV has been identified to be the main cause of cervical cancer,” Dr Jackson said. “We’ve been screening our patients for HPV with their routine Pap smears for over a year now so our patients can easily transition into the new screening program and adopt the guidelines,” she said. Dr Jackson is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and trained in specialist centres Queensland and South Australia after graduating from medical school in Victoria. Her practice is at Wallamurra Towers on Abbott Street, and she has admitting privileges at the Cairns Private Hospital, the Cairns Day Surgery and the Cairns Hospital, She also has private specialist outreach clinics in Mareeba and Atherton, with appointments able to be made through the Cairns office.
CAIRNS FERTILITY CENTRE (CFC) INITIAL FERTILITY ASSESSMENT CAIRNS FERTILITY CENTRE OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF ADVANCED FERTILITY TREATMENTS IN A PRIVATE SETTING AND PROVIDES TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOLLOWING COMPREHENSIVE PRELIMINARY TESTING.
Initial Fertility Assessment The first visit to Cairns Fertility Centre will provide you with general information about the centre and an explanation as to what you can expect in relation to diagnosis and treatment. You will be required to undertake some preliminary investigations as follows:• Physical examination of both male and female partners. • Blood tests for both partners. • Ultrasound scans for both partners. • A semen analysis.
fallopian tubes are patent (unblocked) and to examine the uterine cavity. They are performed on-site at Cairns Central Day Hospital. All information is then reviewed by the medical specialist and your best treatment option can be discussed and selected in a review appointment with the clinic. This appointment may be combined with a “Day 21” review and is the ideal time to see the Fertility Specialist (“Day 1” being the day all menstrual cycles commence). Tests and Early Fertility Treatment Plan
Using the results of these tests we can determine the appropriate pathway for a suitable treatment regimen. Your First Steps towards Treatment Once initial investigations are complete, it is generally recommended that the female partner undergoes a complete hormone tracking and Assessment Cycle. This will provide essential information on the hormone profile during the menstrual cycle and will involve blood tests as well as ultrasound examination to determine growth of egg follicles and ovulation. A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) or HyCoSy procedure is also undertaken in the Assessment Cycle. These tests are ultrasound guided investigations which are used to check that the
With your treatment plan in place, the Fertility Specialist, nursing staff and embryology staff at Cairns Fertility Centre will assist in ongoing monitoring of your care and always be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

The reality is the majority of those who look for assistance at the Biological Psychiatry Clinic are people who suffer from common problems such as depression, anxiety, anguish, internal conflicts, interpersonal difficulties, grief and loss. However, the clinic also provides treatment for more specific conditions such as bipolar disorder, eating disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, psychoses, impulse disorders, addictions and post natal depression. Professor Carlos Hojaij and Dr Ana Drach have been working in Australia for 20 years, and combined have more than 50 years of experience providing care for psychiatric patients. Their idea of psychiatry is of a medical specialty with an essential holistic approach. In this sense, Biological Psychiatry considers the whole person, the entire composition of a human being body, mind, environment, culture, philosophy of life and interpersonal relations. At the Biological Psychiatry Clinic, Prof Hojaij and Dr Drach thoroughly assess their patients, taking into consideration not only their specific clinical symptoms, but also keeping in mind that sometimes a symptom of anxiety, depression, or even an abnormal behavior could be due to an organic cause. This way, collaboration with the patient’s General Practitioner is necessary to achieve a complete diagnostic service and provide the appropriate treatment. It may be the case that a patient will need several investigations to assist in the diagnosis, including blood tests and neuro-imaging examinations. The main tools utilised for treatment are psychotherapy (dealing with inner conflicts, anxiety, phobias, trauma, anger, personality issues, situational depressions, crises of certain periods of life, etc) and psychiatric medications (such as anti-depressants, mood stabilisers, hypnotics. etc). Concerning medications, the philosophy at the Biological Psychiatry Clinic is: less is more. It is well known that hospitalisation can sometimes be a traumatic experience. It is estimated that around
CairnsLife 47 Magazine
30 per cent of patients in a general hospital need psychological-psychiatric support. As Dr Drach and Prof Hojaij have credentials for The Cairns Private Hospital, they very frequently work together with doctors of other specialties to treat the patients admitted to this hospital. Dr. Ana Drach initially graduated as a Bachelor of Psychology and Clinical Psychologist. She later progressed to Medical School, specialising in Psychiatry and becoming a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. She has worked in both public and private settings, with both outpatients and inpatients, and has special interest in mood disorders, eating disorders, early psychosis and postnatal mental health. Prof Carlos Hojaij has a vast experience in Psychiatry, having completed his training in Psychiatry in 1972. Since then he founded, organised and directed psychiatric clinical services overseas at one of the major Brazilian medical schools and in private hospitals. He continued to teach Psychiatry for many years at the University of Santa Casa in Sao Paulo, while also being actively involved in several psychiatric organisations, including being Ex-President of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry. The Biological Psychiatry Clinic has a friendly environment with a home-like atmosphere. Both receptionists, Kathy Newman and Leesa Gibbs, are well-prepared to give all the necessary information regarding appointments, ensuring patients feel comfortable and welcomed.

The Pilates Reformer is probably the most widely recognised piece of Pilates Equipment, however most of the general population have no clue what this piece of equipment is or have misconceptions of what it will actually do for you and your body. In 1912 Joseph Pilates travelled to England where he worked with infirmed soldiers during the World War 1 and initially used the springs from the hospital beds to create exercises to help rehabilitate them. He then went on to create the amazingly universal Reformer. Joseph Pilates truly was a man way ahead of his time. When you look at a Reformer you can still see the basis of the Hospital bed in its design. The reformer has a carriage that moves back and forward and uses springs and body weight for resistance while performing specific muscle targeting exercises.
WHAT IS A PILATES REFORMER?
This piece of equipment is highly versatile with an unlimited about of exercises and awesome stretches able to be performed on it. There really is no limit, and it suitable from Beginners to Advanced. The beauty of the Reformer is that it is comfortable, and non weight bearing in a lying position which makes it a fantastic choice for those suffering from back pain, have injuries or working t o strengthen the core.
J AN I N E N O O P E T CH
The resistance can be varied by the differently weighted springs, which makes the Reformer a truly unique and suitable piece of equipment for all levels of ability. If you are looking to try Reformer classes it is a good idea to undertake One on One sessions prior to going into a class. You will learn how to breathe laterally (expanding the ribs) rather than breathing into your belly or chest and how to engage your inner corset muscles - The Transverse Abdominus and Pelvic Floor. This breathing technique is quite tricky to master, so you will need to spend some time practising this. Breathing is the foundation to Pilates and you really need to get it right from a start. If you are not breathing correctly, you will not be
engaging all the correct muscles. It does take time and you won’t get it or be able to maintain it on the first few sessions but you will get it in time. The Breath is so important as it: • Oxygenates the blood • Provides the cells nourishment • Helps to improve circulation • Helps to improve Skin Tone • Expels Toxins from the body • Encourages the client to switch off and concentrate and remain focused • Provides a rhythm for the movement • Aids in activating target Muscles. You will also learn the foundation Reformer exercises that you will be taught in a beginners class always contains Footwork. Footwork is a fundamental part of the Reformer workout and involves not just the feet but the entire legs and body. You will learn to work in a neutral pelvis and neutral spine and different foot positions aiming to work on the Hip & Knee Extensors focusing on the Hamstrings rather than the larger Quadriceps Muscles. You will strengthen and tone from you feet up and will give your instructor a great insight into your Strength, Flexibility, Asymmetries in your body, movement and Gait cycle –i.e. How you walk and run A Reformer Class also contains abdominal strengthening, great Stretches, Spinal Articulation to help encourage a flexible spine, Lateral Flexion and Rotation, Arm Routines, and Back Extension. A good Pilates Instructor will give you a balanced head to toe workout. So now you know a little more about the Pilates Reformer, then why don’t you give it a try!

HOW TO ATTRACT LEADERS TO YOUR BUSINESS E VA G R A BNE R Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88
‘Having a personality of caring about people is important. You can’t be a good leader unless you generally like people. That is how you bring out the best in them.’ Richard Branson It may be a ‘candidate strong’ market right now but that doesn’t necessarily mean there are quality candidates waiting in the wings eager to put their hand up for any new opportunity. High quality candidates know what’s important to them and as a result are either engaged quickly or they decide to stay where they are. So how do you attract them to YOUR business? According to a recent report that I read, 39% of people consider company reputation to be an important factor when deciding between jobs. Moreover, 51% will consider the opportunity to work with a company that offers them the opportunity to share and expand their knowledge and skills in a supportive and empowering environment. Top leaders are attracted to companies that offer more than personal advancement; these leaders are especially keen to access autonomy, freedom and support that they may not find elsewhere. One of the first questions I ask clients when we first meet is ‘Why would I come work for your company? You would think they would have an answer ready. Well, not necessarily so. Establishing a reputation for being a company that fosters a culture of staff retention, advancement and knowledge is a very important aspect of any successful business. Just look at Richard Branson. Virgin is all about the people.
our people the autonomy, freedom, support and a highly flexible (in everything except quality) brand image that gives them the tools to go out and make amazing things happen. It is this passion-fed formula that has allowed the Virgin Group to launch hundreds of new Virgin companies in scores of very diverse businesses and I have no doubt that it will continue to do so for many years to come.’. Richard Branson, Passionate Leadership. In short, employers need to establish themselves as leaders to attract leaders. I have written an eBook “How to attract top talent to your business”. I would love to send you a free copy, just email me at eva@ eliteexecutive.com.au

BE PREPARED – IT’S CYCLONE SEASON G RAHA M K O CH
Living in Queensland means that we have to be prepared for extreme weather occurrences during our summer storm season which can extend from November through to April. Cyclone and severe storms are a major threat during this time and can cause extensive damage to property and the environment alike. During this time it is a good idea to prepare your home to minimise possible damage. Check your roof and gutters and repair and clear as necessary. Minimise damage from branches and trees by trimming and tidying up. Also ensure that any outdoor furniture, trampolines or large toys are secured so that they do not blow away. Is your insurance for your home, contents, vehicle or boat up to date? If you are unsure - contact your insurance broker immediately to ensure you are fully covered.

storm in your business as this will assist in keeping your business running or get you back up and running much quicker in the event of a disaster. Are your premises secure and are any signs or roofing in need of reinforcement or repair? Is your insurance adequate to cover your business and business interruption? - if you are unsure contact your insurance broker and reassess your situation. A reassessment costs you nothing. Remember that there could be unexpected delays in repairs and possibly no electricity for large affected areas, so this needs to be taken into account when you factor in your Business Interruption coverage. THE POWER I’m sorry, OF PR but the hard THE HARD SELL IS DEAD D A N A E J O NE S
sell is well and truly dead.
”
I don’t know about you, but when someone tries to do the hard sell on me in business these days I try to find the closest rug to crawl under. I’m polite while they give me their sales pitch, but more often than not if they keep rambling on and failing to notice my uninterested body language I have to speak up and nicely tell them that I’m either not interested, or if I do actually want to buy what their selling, I ask them to cut to the chase and just give the price and the specs and be done with it so I can make a quick decision and get the hell out of there. The truth is, I’m not alone – the majority of customers feel this way as years of oversell from so many sources has worn us all down. It seems you can’t turn a corner without someone trying to sell you something these days. And my message to those people in business that believe giving the hard sell to customers is the way to generate the most revenue … I’m sorry, but the hard sell is well and truly dead. People want more than this from their buying experience today. We want information, not sell. We want you to describe why one product is better than another and impress us with your product knowledge and passion for your products and genuinely care about us in the process. Not chew our ear off
CairnsLife 56 Magazine
about all the irrelevant information that mindlessly flows into your head as if you’re reciting it from a script. I was in a retail outlet the other day, that shall remain nameless, and I was confronted with the hard sell by a salesperson and I could see this guy was very nice and was just trying his best to do his job, but while he was waffling on I found my mind wandering and I thought – “surely this person can’t honestly think in this day and age that these sales tactics work?” You see I am one of the majority. I like to shop, but I don’t like to be “sold to”, or not mindlessly sold to anyway. I want you to build a connection with me and tell me what I don’t know and make me think you care. The reality is we are in the information age and chances are people have already arrived into your store knowing what they’re coming in to buy from you. They’ve researched the specs, weighed up the pricing options around town and by the time they get to you, they are ready to buy. So it’s not about the sell, it’s more about the customer relationship you are able to build at this point. So instead of coming up to shoppers with a mouthful of words and very few moments to take a breathe in between them, why not just ask us some key questions and get us talking so you know how best to solve our problems and how best to make recommendations that suit our needs. You see a good sales person doesn’t need to sell, they need to solve problems and build relationships with their customers. That is the true art of selling. e: danae@danaejones.com.au w: www.danaejones.com.au
DEFINING YOUR BUSINESS IDENTITY
So the sun-soaked memories of your holidays are well and truly gone, you’re already feeling exhausted and in need of a boost - and its only February! To remedy this situation, its actually a good time to get clarity on your business identity and purpose by answering these key questions: Who are we? What are wanting to achieve? and How are we different to our competitors? Not surprisingly, most business owners and managers struggle to answer these questions.
M A RK D E N NE R T
Here’s five things to consider when taking a fresh look at your business identity:
M ark Den n ert is th e Ma n a g in g Di rect o r o f E m e r g e n t C o n s u ltin g .
Define clearly your identity, values and purpose Although it may take some time in self-reflection and dialogue between staff and management the discipline of defining clearly your identity (who you are), what you stand for (your values), and purpose (why you exist) will produce enduring results. This process will also help you know where to focus your limited time and resources when facing key decisions. Communicate your identity, values and purpose in simple language for staff to understand According to Gallup research undertaken in the U.S., less than half of managers (46%) and slightly more than one-third of non-management employees (37%) strongly agree with the statement “I know what my company stands for and what makes our brand(s) different from our competitors.”
Helping staff to connect the dots on how their efforts contribute to the overall purpose of the business improves workplace morale and helps boost productivity. Craft a simple identity statement that connects with your customers By communicating who you are and what you stand for - you will find it easier to attract more customers who share the same values and align with your business goals. Increased share of wallet comes when customers feel a deeper connection to your business identity and purpose - with some even becoming your brand ambassadors! Ensure your marketing materials incorporate your identity and purpose By creating consistent brand messaging and a functional brand identity that reflects your identity, values and purpose - you will ensure your business is recognised, remembered and respected. Be authentic! Authentic connection with customers starts with getting back to the soul of your business - what are you passionate about and what do you want customers to experience when they engage with your business. We’ve helped many small business owners and NFP organisations dig deeper to rediscover their identity, values and purpose - resulting in renewed branding and marketing that creates a deeper connection with their customers.

THE BENEFITS OF MEDIATION NAR D I N E C O L L I E R
Well you’ve made it through Christmas for another year and maybe you’ve made some New Years’ resolutions. Hopefully you had a lovely holiday season. For many people however, Christmas and New Year is a time that brings into focus unhappiness in a relationship or in the workplace. For this reason the New Year is often a busy time for family lawyers. If you can’t agree on how to divide your property and/or arrangements for the care of your children, you will end up in court – it’s that simple. Court proceedings are difficult, lengthy and above all very expensive - the average cost per party who is legally represented is about $50,000 if the case goes to hearing.
N ardin e Co l l i er is a Me d ia tio n Special i st an d M an a g in g D ir e c to r o f Workp l ace L eg al S o lu tio n s , C a ir n s Mediat i o n s an d Co llie r L a wy e r s .
What if there was a way to sort out a family law dispute, that cost a couple of thousand dollars instead of $50,000, that could be resolved in weeks not years, and that resulted in an agreement that you could live with, because you helped draft it? Wouldn’t it be worth a go? There is such MEDIATION.
a
process,
called
Mediation is a voluntary process where parties are given a safe and controlled environment within which to talk, guided by a trained, independent person. The process allows parties to talk civilly and to be heard. It is great if you can sort out your arrangements with your former partner over the kitchen table and a cup of tea, but for most people the threat of losing what they’ve worked hard for over the years, or even worse, their children,
means emotions run high. Mediation allows each of you to have your say, respectfully. Not only is mediation quick; and very affordable; it actually has the potential to help separated people work through ways to deal with each other in the future particularly in their ongoing role as parents. There is nothing to lose! Mediation is definitely not limited to family disputes – any dispute can be mediated. Mediation is also very effective in resolving workplace conflict. The “cost” of workplace conflict is immense to both the employee, the employer and other staff who may be caught up in the dispute. It would always be worth trying to resolve a workplace dispute early, before productivity is lost or people resign and legal action becomes necessary. Industrial relations proceedings are also expensive and distressing for all involved. A properly managed and properly resolved conflict can actually improve the working environment. Workplace Mediation, in many cases, improves the parties’ ability to communicate and their understanding of the relationship they have with each other. Hopefully it results in an understanding of why people are in conflict and potentially how to avoid it in the future.

ADULT CHILDREN OF DIVORCE
There are some things your adult children would like you to know about your separation from their other parent. When children are small up to late teens, parents in the main are careful about what they tell their children when the relationship between mum and dad breaks down. Younger children are shielded as much as possible from the whys and wherefore of the relationship breakdown. But when children become adults, many parents don’t seem to realise that although the children are adults, a relationship breakdown impacts on them just as much as if they were young children.
SUZA N N E H A DL E Y
So what would your adult children like you to know? This will shake them up just as much as if the split happened when they were younger. More probably because Mum and Dad have always been together, that’s all they have ever known. As their parents, you have always been there. Changing that situation is a shock to their system. If you waited until they left home before separating, would you be surprised that they would be shocked hurt and angry or maybe even guilty because perhaps you would still be there if they had not left home? Children always blame themselves for parental relationship breakdown. It’s no different now they are older. They may call their own relationships into question. If yours can breakdown after being there all of their lives, is their marriage safe? After all, you and your spouse have taught them through observance and nurture what marriage is all about. Now you have changed the rules and thats hard to cope with. Make sure you reinforce to them that they are not at risk in their own relationship, that they can learn from your mistakes. Marriages, de facto or otherwise, do not have to breakdown Don’t make them the go-between or even the nearest shoulder to cry upon. Yes they are adults with a greater capacity for understanding, but you are still the parent. They do not need to know it all. That is yours and your ex spouse’s business. They may want to know but they do not need to know. Believe me, they will thank you for it later if you keep a cool head on your natural inclination to unload on your adult children. Find a professional to confide in, not your adult children. Don’t ask them to take sides in the breakdown. Your relationship with their parent is not their relationship with their parent. Don’t bring discord
into the entire family unit. While they may ask for details, be sparing with your information. Above all, don’t take them to your family lawyer. Its not their property, not their decision and not their life to lead afterwards. Rely on your professional advice not the advice that adult children may feel they have to give you. On occasions there are highly vested interests amongst adult children in a property division. Trust your lawyer to advise you on the best way forward Remember your children still need you to be their parents. By not asking them to take sides, be the go-between or your closest confidant about all the ‘awfulness’ of your relationship breakdown, you avoid putting them in difficult situations when it comes to birthdays weddings, family celebrations. Be inventive about major celebrations. Your children will understand you still love them if you do not spend every birthday Christmas, Easter Sunday with them so that the other parent can share that time with them too Be kind in your comments about their parent. You might find those snippy remarks funny about your former partner. your children will not. They will only see disrespect and learn from you how to treat an ex partner. Be kind - its costs nothing and yet you will gain more. Do your best to se the good in your ex spouse, You cared enough to be parents together. You are still the parents. Let them know you still love them, will still be there for them and will still do your best to help them through life’s challenges. They will thank you for this later. Don’t rush into another relationship straight away. If you do, don’t expect your children to be cool with it immediately. Take your time introducing your new lover to your family if you want that new love to be with you for a long time. Just as you would take your time introducing a new partner into younger children’s lives, take your time about a new partner. If there is one final tip I can give you it is this under normal circumstances, it should be you and your former partner delivering the news to your adult children together about the breakdown, with no recriminations, no vitriol no daughters or sons in law, just you and your children. There will be tears for sure, but as a parent you are not new to that. Let them know you still love them and expect them to continue to love the other parent, you just cannot be together any more. They will thank you for that too.

Partners and fiancés include people intending to get married, married partners and also de facto partners (including those in a same sex relationship). Overseas partners of eligible Australian’s may apply to enter and remain permanently in Australia through either the Prospective Marriage visa or the Partner visa. The Partner Visa is split into an onshore and offshore option and is for people from overseas to enter and stay in Australia with their partner, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. Temporary residency is granted first and then if two years after you apply the relationship is ongoing, a permanent visa may be granted. Applicants who demonstrate that they have a long term relationship of over three years with their partner or partners who have been together for over two years and have dependent children together can move directly into a permanent residency visa. Applicants can either apply for this visa on marriage grounds or on de facto grounds. If applying under de facto grounds applicants must demonstrate, unless exemptions apply, that they have been in a de facto relationship for an entire twelve months prior to making the application. The Prospective Marriage Visa is only an offshore visa option and is for people
from overseas to enter Australia, marry their fiancé, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. Once married, holders of this visa can then apply to remain permanently in Australia through the Partner Visa. For Australian’s sponsoring their partner to enter or remain here in Australia there are certain sponsorship undertakings. As part of the application process all visa applicants must meet health and character requirements and also must demonstrate a genuine and continuing relationship exists. Relationship evidence must be provided to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) with your application. Broadly DIBP are looking at four areas including financial aspects- such as whether or not you have shared financial commitments and responsibilities together, the nature of your household – that you and your partner share responsibilities in your household. The social context of the relationship is assessed as well as the nature of your commitment to each other. For further advice on partner visa classes you may seek the advice of a registered migration agent who can advise the most suitable option and guide you through the immigration process.

LUXURY CARMAKER LEXUS HAS SET A NEW RECORD FOR SALES IN AUSTRALIA AFTER ACHIEVING A FIFTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR OF SALES GROWTH IN 2016.
Official figures released today confirm Lexus delivered more than 9,000 vehicles last year - the first time in the brand’s history it has surpassed that milestone. Australian motorists bought an unprecedented 9,028 Lexus vehicles, which represents an increase of 3.9 per cent on the previous record set in 2015. Rising demand for the luxury brand’s vehicles was focused on its NX, RX and LX Line SUVs and its premium CT 200h. Lexus Australia chief executive Peter McGregor said the long-term success of Lexus was based on having in-demand vehicles and an unmatched dedication to customer service. “Lexus has experienced remarkable growth over the past five years as we have worked with our national dealer network to expand our sales volume by more than 42 per cent,” Mr McGregor said. “In the past two years alone, deliveries of Lexus vehicles have risen by 29 per cent on the back of new or significantly upgraded luxury vehicles and continual reinvestment in what is acknowledged as the best customer care in the industry,” he said.
CairnsLife 63 Magazine
“Over the same period, demand for our SUVs has been simply remarkable, more than doubling in the past two years on the back of the highly sought-after NX Line,” he said. “The recent introduction of the upgraded IS Line, plus the impending arrival of our exciting flagship LC coupe and the soon-to-be revealed LS sedan will help drive the next stage in the evolution of the Lexus brand.” In 2016, the strongest-selling individual model for Lexus was the NX Line, which achieved 3,308 sales - an increase of 13.2 per cent - on the back of rapidly growing market preference for flexible-use SUVs. Both the RX and LX SUV Lines delivered higher proportional gains with demand for the RX rising 14.3 per cent to 1,912 vehicles while the LX advanced 47.7 per cent to 285 vehicles. The hybrid CT 200h lifted sales by more than 25 per cent last year while the premium GS posted a gain of more than 40 per cent. Somewhere or time in creation God or physics or both added water and dirt to make some sort of syrupy gunge universally known as mud. Many, many moons later as a young boy of limited means a large collection of mud stole my shoe. Claimed it, and hid it in its murkey recesses, never to be recovered. From that day forward, I’d seized upon the Orwellian notion that two legs are indeed bad. Luckily, in my case I had four wheels that were good. I have not been alone in this thought: it seems that since the very invention of the internal combustion engine, man’s desire to leave the tarmac (or cobbles or evenly worn streets) remains unabated. You might even think that the recent proliferation of 4wd drive road barges and their equally unwieldy smaller sibling crossovers are testament to this desire: as if the splitting of torque to all four wheels, higher ride height and often enormous engines are the cornerstone of society’s desire to drive - even where walking would be safer, we propel ourselves forward into places where mountain goats and pack mules fear to tread, while whole families are enclosed in air-conditioned splendour. It’s quite
CairnsLife 64 Magazine
odd them, that statistically, less than 15% of 4 wheel drives will ever find themselves beating a track for their owners. Let’s be honest, the majority of 4WD’s are purchased as upright safety cages for the school run or long distance buses for aspirant land owners. Still, this is the largest growing sector of our vehicle market, with 5 of the top 10 selling cars coming from the ‘sit up and beg’ production line. And 2017 is set to see the rise of the “uber SUVs” with offerings from Rolls, Bentley and Aston joining an already burgeoning segment currently stuffed with supercharged Range Rovers and steroidal high-riding Porsches. Better men than me believe there is a market to sell $300,000 plus 4WDs, so who am I to stand in the way of such progress, however absurd it may appear. The absurdity to me is not the prices, there are plenty of high ticket vehicles out there which, if I were furnished with the means, I wouldn’t hesitate to own. No, the absurdity lies in the unused potential. What lies beyond the smooth black horizon is red dust, corrugation and sticky, sticky mud. This is not a safe place for door panels or fancy fog lights - this is a place for bash plates and bull-bars. Actually taking my comparatively inexpensive and relatively new off roader, off-road is an experience fraught with fear, swearing and elevated pulses. The thought of even the most cosmetic of panel damage is not one I wish to bear, let alone the removal of some low hanging component that might prove essential once back on the highway. So, it takes little imagination to think what the average Q , X or F (let alone a Bentley or Roller) driver would be thinking about heading into the great red yonder... “very unlikely” would be most likely. This fear transmits itself way down the food chain - when wading through the mud pits or pottering up the Bloomfield, a 20 year old HiLux or Patrol with a lift so high it has to have a mod plate, is where it’s at. It appears that like a fine wine, the HiLux and its stable mates, need to take on a reasonable vintage before they can be properly appreciated. At the end of the day, being surrounded by acres of airbags and leather, with high driving position, road presence and good visibility all makes sense. But If you want to drive a bus, buy a bus; if you want to go off road, get a tank (and a spanner!) and if you want to drive in the city… Get a cab!
