LIFE In Your Opinion
NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS PROFESSOR SANDRA HARDING
VICE CHANCELLOR AND PRESIDENT | JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY
“My resolutions include taking time to exercise more regularly and to ensure I find some space in the intensity of the everyday to do that. Spending time with family and friends - and in our beautiful environment, including on the Tablelands - are all so important too. Finding time for all that is gold.”
JODIE DUIGNAN-GEORGE
ASSOCIATE VICE-CHANCELLOR | FNQ CQUNIVERSITY
“2016 was a busy work year for me in terms of laying foundations for the future, so 2017 will be my year for realising outcomes. I plan to make the most of opportunities, particularly those that generate the most positive social impact. On a personal front, I’m resolving to laugh more, play more and dedicate more quality time to my loved ones…this will definitely involve some adventure travel!”
TRENT TWOMEY
CHAIRMAN | ADVANCE CAIRNS
“A better work-life balance would be great! 2016 has been such a big year for our family, and I would like to focus on the little things that really matter in 2017. Being home for dinner with the kids, exploring more of the local swimming holes and hidden camping treasures would have to top the list I reckon!”
MICHAEL DELANEY PARTNER | BDO
“I am not one who usually contemplates new year resolutions, but now I have been asked, I can see why I have ignored them in the past because it is too hard. It is not really a resolution, but I hope that Cairns takes advantage of the opportunities that I expect will happen next year and enjoys a long period of economic sunshine while keeping the lifestyle we all enjoy so much.”
WARREN ENTSCH MP FOR LEICHARDT
“I promise to continue being a pain in the backside of decision-makers to make sure that we get the maximum amount of opportunities for our region. In doing so, I want to see a lot of the issues that I’ve been juggling over the past few months resolved. At a personal level, I want to start to spend more time with my family and I’ll also be keeping a very close eye on my mum who has had a few health issues.”

EPIC FAILS AROUND THE HOUSE GR U M P Y O L D MAN D ANNY BE T ROS
“Man has got to know his limitations”. Famous quote by Clint Eastwood in the movie Dirty Harry. I’ve always loved that line and as a wiser age attacks me the realization that I’m not as good as I always think I am embeds itself in my brain. Classic case in point is handyman tasks around the home. So the family will be sitting around the dinner table when my darling wife pops up with “oh by the way there are a few tasks that need doing in the house involving hanging something on the wall, dealing with cupboards, doors etc.” You know the reoccurring list that never goes away! “No problem- I can do that” I announce. Dead silence. I look around and the family is looking away, eyes rolling, mumbling in their food. What!! I say, I can do that and I look at them all only to be met by more scoffing, smart arse remarks and predictions of falling roofs, damages and general destruction. Let’s face it, some people are naturally born good handyman, others like me are a walking disaster, an accident in motion and a danger to myself. It’s time to take stock, add up the damage bill and accept that I’m better off with a pen in my hand rather than a hammer or screwdriver. The quality of my workmanship is –well,it’s just not pretty. I’ve managed to successfully hide many a bad attempt throughout the house inc crooked screws, nails, holes in walls etc strategically placed behind pictures, curtains and cupboards. So with my ego as a legendry handyman in tatters and banned from tasks in the house, I then progress to what all normal grumpy old blokes do and decide to build a veggie garden. Away from the house in “man’s domain”. How hard
CairnsLife 8 Magazine
could this be? Off to Bunnings to spend enough money to boost their share price, get it all set up with some help from a bob cat and my own blood, sweat and tears, blisters, scratches, bruises and a considerable amount of swearing and then plant everything I could possibly imagine eating over 2 garden beds. Everything’s going gang busters- plants thriving, vegies starting to appear, produce looks amazing. I couldn’t find enough hands to pat myself on the back. Then one morning I check up on my newly grown children and I notice tomatoes on the ground. Scrub turkeysbastards. I put up a fence around. No good, they jump over and are having a feed at my expense so I put mesh over my tomatoes all while checking the price per kilo of the vegie at Coles to assess how much of a financial waste of time this really is. Conquered another problem I thought but then nature struck back and laughed in my face. As I arrived home one day it was almost like I could hear music and a party going on in my garden. It was like a scene from biblical times, a plague of grasshoppers, bugs, and grubs had descended on my garden. It was a classic teenage Facebook party for bugs. Looked like they had a bar set up and were laughing at another idiot who thought he could get away with it without them knowing. They had come from all over Cairns to demolish my lettuce, silverbeet, spinach, kale (good) and everything else that had a green leaf. Stripped everything bare and then left leaving only their bug sh*t behind. Managed to salvage a few tomatoes from behind the mesh which was behind the fence. Grows great quality weeds now.

WHAT LIES BENEATH L I N DA COOP ER
WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER
It takes a brave woman, particularly one in the public eye, to admit she considered pushing her baby in front of traffic. But then there’s a lot more to the slim, attractive city slicker we know as Cairns Regional Councillor, Linda Cooper. Well known for her forthrightness, her high heels and her ability to get things done, Linda was brought up on a farm in a tiny country town in WA in the middle of the wheat and sheep belt. She chuckles at the contrast between the very practical little girl whose only thoughts of being a mover and a shaker at that time were herding sheep with her dad. Linda had an inherent interest in politics and current affairs dating back to her childhood, where the family listened to ABC Radio. “For the rural community, the ABC was a vital link with what was going on in the outside world,” explains Linda. Underneath the bright, bubbly, confident exterior hosting her own breakfast show on HOT FM in the late nineties, Linda hid the demons that had caused her to ring a Poisons Hotline to ask what poison she could administer that could not be detected. Linda suffered the most serious form of post-natal depression.
“I loved life. I was a motivated, happy, ‘out there’ kind of person, and to suffer deep depression was devastating for me, and my family, who just couldn’t understand what had happened to me. I was on a watch after my eldest son was born. When I called the Poisons Centre, I was beyond reason. You don’t think rationally. It’s not a case of just snapping out of it, as many people tell you to do,” Linda says. “It was terrifying, and if I can support others going through the same thing, or teaching people greater understanding and empathy for those suffering PND, I feel I’ve done something positive,” adds Linda. Linda spoke to expectant mothers at Cairns Hospital when pregnant with her youngest son. “I found it strange that there was plenty of talk about giving birth, then how to care for the baby, but nothing about how you cope as a parent,” Linda says. Linda enjoys a wonderful relationship with both her sons, now 21 and 18, and has always been open and honest about her own experience with PND, in the hope that it will afford them greater understanding if it touches their lives. There’s far more to Linda than meets the eye. She loves her Council work, but it’s community that drives her.
C a i r n s L i f e 11 M a g a z i n e
“Communities can be so strong in themselves given the right connections. It’s all about networking to match needs to resources, empowering the community, and I love to help in that regard,” says Linda. Linda was one of the founding members of The Junction Clubhouse in Cairns, where people diagnosed with mental illness, self-medicating and controlling their situation can seek assistance to return to employment, and gain access to other supports. “Because it’s tough. You don’t suddenly wake up one day thinking, “Oh, I’m all good now, I’ll go and join the touch football group, or I’ll go and get a job; it doesn’t work like that. I know,” Linda adds. Aside from numerous CRC committee memberships, and her ongoing support for PND sufferers, Linda is a member of the School of the Arts Steering Committee, patron of the Far North Queensland Asbestosis Support Group, Board Member of Redlynch Multi-Use Sports Facility, and Ambassador for Foster Care Queensland. Linda Cooper’s not just a pretty face. So now you know.

THE BEST IS YET TO COME RENEE AMADIO M C G R AT H E S TAT E AG ENT S CA IRNS STORY BY JANIE BARTON PHOTO BY PHOTOHOLICSTUDIO
To develop a passion for the real estate industry at a young age is admirable. To spend 12 years learning everything about the industry shows dedication. But to be successful and have your idol mentor you is the ultimate success story.
years and really respect him and Kirsty and their company philosophy based on integrity and transparency. And I have always idolised John McGrath. He is a true role model for me and has been since my very first day in real estate.”
Such is the case for Renee Amadio of McGrath Estate Agents. Her enthusiasm for the industry began when she was 18 years old and started out as a personal assistant for her father, who was also a real estate agent, and her passion increased over time as she learned many different aspects of the industry.
To help kick start what she plans to be her best year yet, Renee met with John McGrath in Sydney late last year.
“I’ve probably covered everything you can think of when it comes to real estate,” she said. “I have always worked in the industry and I just love it. I love the people you meet and I love property,” she said. “The entire process is fun for me.”
John McGrath, founder of McGrath Estate Agents, has successfully opened 92 offices throughout the country and is always expanding the business.
Renee, who turns 30 this month, plans to make this year the biggest and best for both her and her clients. “Celebrating my 30th in January and my 12th year in the industry is really exciting for me,” she said. “I have huge goals set out for 2017. Success for me is being able to show my two children you can achieve anything you want if you just have a plan and follow your dreams.” Renee joined McGrath Estate Agents in 2016 because she felt the team environment and company culture were the perfect foundations for her to achieve her goals and develop further success in her career. “I was really excited to hear that Matt Powe and Kirsty Kernot brought McGrath to Cairns,” she said. “I have known Matt for
“Meeting with him was a fantastic opportunity for me in improving my skill set as an agent,” she said. “We will be catching up again this year to review my progress.”
Renee, who is a fourth-generation Cairns local, grew up on the family’s sugar cane farm in Aloomba. She specialises in residential sales predominately in Redlynch and Trinity Beach, but due to her success she is expanding to the northern suburbs of Cairns this year.

2017 sees the Tanks Arts Centre celebrate twelve years of their much-loved Jazz Up North series and six years of the World Music series. The Jazz Up North series is as unpredictable as it is soulful. A seriously diverse genre rooted in Blues, Jazz can be experienced as swinging big bands, hard-hitting rhythms to laid-back mellow harmonies or be-bop. Its earthy grooves and sometimes improvised free jazz style make for captivating and charming performances and a social night out at the Tanks. Kicking off the series is Hot 8 Brass Band, direct from New Orleans, blending hip-hop, jazz and funk with traditional brass sounds in March 2017. Ingenious arrangements and an utterly infectious groove splicing traditional jazz, soul and hip hop with creative original songs, Hot 8 Brass Band is the real Louisiana deal. The band has released two of their own records and featured in two of Spike Lee’s documentaries, bringing them national and international exposure helping to fuel a steady touring schedule. The story of the Hot 8 Brass Band has been one of tragedy and triumph. Over the years the Hot 8’s ranks have been decimated by the deaths of four original members due to street violence, illness and the life-altering turning point; Hurricane Katrina. After being evacuated, displaced, and scattered across the country, the band regrouped and began touring the United States, opening for popular R&B artist Lauren Hill among others. It’s “…the sort of music that makes you glad to be alive,” Esquire. April 2017 will see the forefather of the Melbourne jazz scene in the 70s and 80s Vince Jones take to the Tanks stage, and The Idea of North will deliver their evoking repertoire with their ARIA Award Winning A Capella quartet in May. The Emie R Roussel Trio will bring a Canadian jazz flavour in June, supported by Australian jazz threesome Estampa, and prepare to be swept away when chanteuses Baby et Lulu take the stage in August. Returning to Tanks in October is Ollie McGill of The Cat Empire fame with his new project, a trio, who describe their sound as electronic inspired jazz with progressive rock influences. The Tanks World Music series brings global sounds direct to our tropical doorstep. Encompassing many different styles of music, World Music can be described as a combination of traditional meets popular. To introduce the series, Turkish born DJ & Producer, Mercan Dede, mixes electronic with traditional sounds, bringing with him his Secret Trio and Whirling Dervish dancing. Get set for heart-breaking harmonies, adrenalized jigs and stomps when cheeky lads The East Pointers (Ireland) have you two-stepping with a smile on your face.
Everyone who purchases 5 or more shows goes into the draw to
Sabor Y Control describe themselves as a Peruvian salsa dura orchestra, on a mission to rescue the roots of their genre, establishing a sound and lyrical identity all their own on the way. The World Music series closes in September with an icon of Sudanese music, Ajak Kwai, with her inspiring and soulful music infused with funky-afro-beats.
MUSIC • ARTS • COMMUNITY • EVENTS • CULTURE
2017 sees a change in the buying options for the Jazz and World music series where instead of just buying one or both of the series, shows can be selected from both series allowing music lovers to create their own musical journey.

AFFINITY DESIGNER HOMES
AN AFFINITY FOR BUILDING WORDS BY JANIE BARTON P H O T O B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H
Roslyn Smith Affinity Designer Homes 144 Mulgrave Road, Cairns Ph: 4051 8866 www.affinitydh.com.au
Without planning to - or even realising she was doing it - Roslyn Smith of Affinity Designer Homes became a pioneer in the building industry. The 2016 Far North Queensland Master Builders Women in Building Award winner has had a passion for the industry all her working life, and has inadvertently helped lead the way for women to succeed in what was once a male-dominated industry. Since she finished high school and studied Architectural Drafting in college, where she was one of just two women in a class of 40, Roslyn has been involved in almost every aspect of the building industry. She was an architectural draftsperson for architects and engineers on a whole range of projects including sewer pumping stations, roads, residential subdivisions, house and commercial buildings. She worked in the retail building industry in hardware stores as a timber, trade and plumbing counter salesperson. She also worked with construction companies completing estimates and worked in administration, purchasing, accounts payable and with contracts. She also worked alongside supervising estimators, draftspersons and purchasing officers and managed a truss and fabrication plant. Today she is an award-winning builder and home designer, specialising in custom-designed homes. “It was definitely unusual 20 to 30 years ago to see a woman drafting for a
CairnsLife 32 Magazine
building company, running a truss plant or working at a hardware store,” she said. “Customers would ask to see my boss when they saw me! “It was challenging at first, but I started to tell them the boss was away and they had to deal with me. But I had to prove myself. I had to know what I was talking about so I made it my business to learn everything I could. Once they realised I knew what I was talking about, they’d come back and deal with me. “While it was a case of having to prove myself more, at the end of the day it wasn’t a bad thing because I learned a lot. Luckily, it’s so much more acceptable today to see women in the industry.” Roslyn has been with Affinity Homes for 15 years and specialises in designing custom-built homes, fulfilling her passion for providing homes for clients that best suit our tropical climate and are energy efficient. She’s also the project manager, dealing with clients from initial meetings through to concept and construction before handing over the keys to the owners when the project is complete. She is thrilled to see more women in the industry today. “The girls are getting out there,” she said. “It’s really great to see. But whether you’re a woman or a man to be successful I think you need to recognise your skills and pursue them. And you also need to be patient because nothing comes overnight.”

Jason Pyne’s dream of providing energy security throughout the world is well on its way to becoming a reality. The Cairns inventor created the awardwinning Portagrid, an offgrid solar-power system designed for use in remote regions anywhere on the globe. Portagrid, which won the Eco-Innovation Award at the 2016 Tropical North Queensland Innovation Awards, is an all-inone renewable energy generation and storage system.

“It is designed for remote areas in Australia or anywhere in the world that would otherwise use diesel generators for power,” he said. “Diesel generators are not always reliable and are expensive to run long term, and sometimes fuel is not always available due to harsh weather conditions or flooding. “Portagrid provides basic power and can provide clean water and communications in a transportable shipping container that can be shipped, helicoptered or trucked to site anywhere in the world.” Jason, an electrical technician who has specialised in renewable energy technology since

1998 and has more than 15 years’ experience with Ergon Energy, is backed by a team that has a combined 75 years’ experience in the renewable energy industry. Portagrid can also incorporate water filtration or desalination systems for disaster relief applications or long-term housing supply. The units are quick and easy to install without the need of highly skilled technicians. “It’s a simple process of deploying, plugging in and turning on, which takes just hours,” Jason said. They can be quickly stowed away during a severe weather event and redeployed once it has passed. The product was three years in development and can last up to 20 years. It is now at the commercialisation stage with interest coming from across the country and overseas. “In the world today, more than 1.5 billion people live in energy poverty,” Jason said. “We want to change that. We see it as our social obligation to the sustainability of our planet and for our lessfortunate neighbours around the world.”

Just as Cairns stands between the Wet Tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, Sheriden Morris stands at the centre of environmentalism, humanitarianism and business in tropical North Queensland. Winner of the Cairns Business Women’s Club’s 2016 Manager in Business Award and Cairns City Council’s 2015 Woman of the Year title, Sheriden has been at the forefront of just about every environmental issue in the Far North – tropical development, coral bleaching, Crown of Thorns Starfish outbreaks and more. As the co-founder and managing director of the not-for-profit Reef and Rainforest Research Centre (RRRC), Sheriden has been responsible for a number of remarkable outcomes for environmental and humanitarian research as well as management, protection and sustainability projects in the region. Under her leadership, RRRC has attracted more than $200 million in grants for the region and assisted in its implementation of the Australian Government’s $100 million Marine and Tropical Sciences Research Facility. “I’ve always thought the way forward in protecting the environment is smart, sustainable development,” she said. “I have a passion for the environment, but I also have great a passion to see a thriving, developing community using its tropical expertise to build a good future. “We’re in a part of the world that is frontier country, and we need to use our understanding of our environment and the people who live

here to improve people’s lives. “This is how we get a comfortable coexistence between developing viable businesses in FNQ while preserving these world-class environments we’re so famous for.” She also spearheaded the Treaty Village Resilience Program, which operates on the border between Australia and PNG. Visiting the region to review turtle and dugong management, she instead found a humanitarian disaster - people struggling with poverty, malnutrition lack of clean water, basic facilities and serious outbreaks of disease. “I was absolutely shocked to see there were such critical issues, such as wide-spread multidrug-resistance tuberculosis (TB), occurring less than four kilometres from the Australian border,” she said. With the support of $2 million of Australian Government funding, RRRC has developed an innovative Community Ranger program in the region. “I’m really proud of the program and its progress,” she said. “The rangers do everything from first aid response and health education all the way through to putting in wells, building hospitals and protecting the border. They’re pretty amazing. “Our actions on the border are extremely important – not only for the population of the Treaty Villages but for us here in Far North Queensland. It’s in everyone’s interest that the people living on Australia’s borderlands are healthy, safe and resilient, now and into the future.”

Renee Dembowski Social Butterfly Marketing Ph: 0438 200 118 www.socialbutterflymarketing.com.au
Renee Dembowski, founder of Social Butterfly Marketing, will always remember 2016 as being the year that catapulted her business to the next level. Being named Cairns Business Women’s Club Sole Entrepreneur was one of the highlights of her year. She was also named a finalist in the Regional AIM Excellence Awards and created Australia’s first Virtual Fashions on the Field event. Recently, she kicked off She Means Business networking function with Kristy Vallely and launched a campaign to find the city’s first official social butterfly. “It was a very busy year,” the businesswoman said. “I wasn’t expecting to win the Cairns Business Women’s Club award. It is definitely one of the highlights of my career so far.” Renee assists clients with their social media presence, teaching them how to best utilise Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter, to name just a few. “There are so many social media platforms out there,” she said. “Facebook is still the most widely used social media platform worldwide, however I think the absolute necessities are Facebook and Google+. They can be used by any business to raise their profile, increase their SEO and attract new customers.” Renee helps businesses develop online strategies and trains them to manage their own social media platforms effectively. Her latest project is to find a Cairns Social Butterfly to promote events and businesses through various social media platforms.
CairnsLife 35 Magazine
“I’m looking for someone who is fresh, vibrant, full of energy, likable and inclusive of everybody in the region,” she said. “The public will select a number of finalists and we will have a crowning ceremony (in the first half of 2017) where the public are invited and the Social Butterfly will be announced and crowned.” The winner will receive a yearlong contract to promote the best the region has to offer through social media, TV and radio (HotFM) while attending events, businesses, tourism activities and restaurants in the region. Renee will also recruit two runners-up. Businesses are invited to join the Cairns Social Butterfly movement by becoming a sponsor. Not only will they be a part of this exciting new innovative campaign, they will reach a whole new demographic. “It’s a really good opportunity for businesses to make use of social media,” Renee said. “Cairns will be watching the crowned socialite who will be at their businesses raising awareness of their products or services.” Whether businesses sponsor Cairns Social Butterfly or not, Renee believes they must have a social media presence. “I think any business that does not take advantage of social media is insane,” she said. “It’s free and if you work it really well there’s no need to spend an excessive amount in social media advertising. Plus it’s an excellent branding tool.”

THE ULTIMATE
IN FITNESS AND FUN FI T360 I N TE RACT IVE T R AINING WORDS BY JANIE BAR TON PHOTO BY SILVIA MOGOROVICH
A revolutionary new era in the fitness industry has started in Cairns – and Australia –with the recent opening of FIT360 Interactive Training, a dynamic new fitness centre on Mulgrave Road. The centre joins the growing list of American and European gyms using PRAMA 3.0 technology, which uses the integration of sounds, lights and sensors on its pressuresensitive floors and walls to give exercisers the ultimate fitness workout while having fun at the same time. “It’s so exciting and so revolutionary,” said manager Sharni Dowling, who has been in the fitness industry for 18 years. “This technology is taking off all over the world, and FIT360 Cairns is the first in Australia to have it. “It’s like being in a disco - the music is pumping, the lights are changing, the walls and floors respond to touch, and people are 100 per cent engaged in their exercises. “After 18 years in the industry, I’ve seen it all, but this is so forward thinking. It’s a marriage of technology and fitness - a marriage made in heaven.” Owner Kate Fern had always been a nongym person before discovering Prama.. “She tried many different gyms, but felt self conscious in them,” Sharni said. “She would sign up to a membership and, like a lot of people, would only go back once or twice and then quit. “The Prama technology made her want to work out and get fit. And that’s been happening with our members. It’s amazing
because it caters for people who have never been in a gym before through to elite athletes.” With motivating instructors, upbeat music and friendly competition, members of all fitness levels enjoy exercising and, best of all, seeing results. It has sessions for all age groups, including its popular KidsFIT for primary and high school students, GreyFIT for older people and classes for mums and bubs. Children are welcome to join their parents during classes. “We encourage kids to work out with their mums and dads,” Sharni said. “The engagement you see with families working out together is amazing.” FIT360 is open Monday to Saturday 5am6.30pm and has 30 and 45-minute classes. From 6.30pm onwards the centre is available for sporting groups, such as Northern Pride which has recently started training there, that want to improve their speed, reaction time, power and coordination. It also offers a free trial, including a consultation with an experienced trainer. “Our classes are so much fun that often members forget they’re working out,” Sharni said. “It’s bringing the fun back to fitness, and I think that’s the crucial key to its success. And people see results. I think it’s just so exciting.” Fit360 Interactive Fitness 2/232 Mulgrave Road Ph: 1300 348 360 Website: wwwfit360training.com.au

F45 T RAI N I NG CA IR NS CBD WORDS BY JANIE BAR TON
If your new year’s resolution is to lose weight, transform your body and make new friends along the way, you’ll want to talk to Chris McKewin. Chris’ life changed two years ago when, after working out at different gyms for years and not getting results, he discovered a hugely popular global fitness phenomenon – F45 Training. Within 10 weeks he lost nearly 15 kilos. From that moment on, Chris has been passionate about showing others how they can also transform their lives, which is why he opened F45 Training Cairns CBD earlier this year. His studio is one of more than 650 global chains of F45 Training centres. Its highintensity exercises, with rest periods in between, have been designed by some of the world’s leading fitness professionals to achieve results for people of all fitness levels. F45 has attracted world-wide success, helping everyday people as well as celebrities like Hugh Jackman and Ricky Martin. It’s also attracting sports star owners, such as Nate Myles who owns three F45 centres on the Gold Coast. “It worked for me, so I know it can work for everyone,” Chris said. “I want to help transform as many people as I can.” F45 Cairns CBD has 26 customised training systems, a highly functional team-training program working in circuit patterns, over 3500 exercise workouts that change

every day. The aim is that clients remain motivated, challenged and achieve great results. It’s time-based, so people can work as hard as they want and then have a rest before they do it again, making the sessions perfect for all fitness levels and ages. “These workouts are finely tuned to achieve maximum results in the shortest time possible with the most fun and variety,” Chris said. “They allow everyone to work at their own pace. “People love the team training, the energetic environment and the encouragement. You see high-fives all around. I love that people come here not knowing anyone and leave knowing nearly everyone they’ve trained with. “ F45 is open six days a week with morning and afternoon sessions. Saturday sessions are mornings only and even include a DJ to liven up the atmosphere. Chris offers a free no-obligation seven-day trial and memberships vary from one class through to six months. “Our motto is team-training, life-changing,” Chris said. “As a trainer, I just love helping someone completely change their life, not only in the gym but outside the gym as well.”

Demi International, is expanding to three new locations to meet growing demand. A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) with International Accreditation, Demi International is opening its doors in Toowoomba, Cairns and Strathpine, building on the legacy of its original Maroochydore campus which has been successfully operating for more than a decade.
DEMI INTERNATIONAL EXPANDS THROUGHOUT QUEENSLAND
The new locations will specialise in three courses – Diploma of Make-up, Diploma of Beauty Therapy and Diploma of Remedial Massage. Each course takes one year to complete comprising one day per week on campus and 15 hours online, with the bulk of the cost coverable through the Australian Government’s VET Student Loan scheme. The programs are flexible, allowing students to work and study simultaneously.
Demi International director Ann Donnarumma said the expansion into the new Queensland locations would open a world of opportunities for aspiring beauty professionals who previously had to travel large distances to access the academy’s award winning services.
Ms Donnarumma said the hallmarks of Demi International included small class sizes intimate face to face contact with students, hands-on intensive training, relaxed friendly learning, modern equipment and facilities and highly trained teachers with extensive industry contacts.
Demi International’s Sunshine Coast centre has one of the best training and placement records in the business, with thousands of students passing through the premises in the past five years alone and a strike-rate of 90% finding employment prior to graduation.
“We provide the full spectrum of education and training services for people looking to fast track their career in the beauty industry, from the latest and most relevant training available to our strong work experience program right through to assistance with grooming, resumes and interview skills.
“It’s a growing industry world-wide and one that’s constantly evolving so it’s important to learn from the best so you can hit the ground running,’’ Ms Donnarumma said. “As the longest serving RTO beauty school in the region dedicated to teaching the highest professional standards for over 10 years, we are proud of our track record in launching many thousands of successful careers. “Most beauty and skin care businesses in our footprint area from Caloundra to Noosa lay claim to employing at least one of our graduates and we are very excited about applying our winning formula at our new locations in Toowoomba, Cairns and Strathpine.”
CairnsLife 40 Magazine
“They come out the other end industry ready,’’ she said. Demi International graduates find employment in a wide range of beauty and skincare related industries including beauty salons, day spas, wellness centres, destination retreats and cruise ships, with many going on to manage their own successful salons.

OLHOC
TRAVEL SMART W OR D S B Y J A N I E B AR TON
A fun and healthy Travel Smart Program started at Our Lady Help of Christian School (OLHOC) in 2012 just keeps getting better. The program, which is a component of a broader government vision to encourage more students to walk and/or ride to school under adult supervision, has grown in both participation levels and supervised Travel Smart activities since its inception at OLHOC. The school’s program has been so successful that it now include two bike buses (Mooroobool and Bayview Heights areas), three walking buses (Balaclava Road, Mooroobool and Earlville areas ) and a scooter bus (from Super Cheap Auto Earlville). There are five main aims of the school’s Travel Smart program, which was started with the assistance of the Department of Transport and Main Roads. This includes increasing road safety around schools by reducing traffic congestion and illegal parking and reducing school-related vehicle kilometres travelled, greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution and improving air quality. It also motivates students to increase their levels of physical activity so they arrive to school more alert, encourages students to develop lifelong travel behavioural habits and engages and influences the whole school community as it encourages social interaction between students, teachers and parents. Following its successful first year, the school’s Parents and Friends Association endorsed and voted to support the continuation of the program, which continues to attract more participation from parents and students. Parents are welcome and encouraged to join if they can, but if they can’t they are reassured knowing that each activity is supervised by other parents and OLHOC staff members. There are five routes now organised by OLHOC and are run regardless of the weather, and all depart on time. The school also has a Part of the Way (PWOK) aspect to the activities, so if the distance is too far for some, they can join the activity along the way. The five activities are: Mestrez Street Walking Bus - This walking bus departs from Mestrez Street Monday to Friday at 7:55am. Supervision is from 7:40am. Students are upervised by adults on their walk to school.
CairnsLife 42 Magazine
Earlville Walking Bus - The walking bus leaves from Super Cheap Auto on Mulgrave Road Monday to Friday at 7:50am. Supervision is from 7:40am. Students are supervised by adults on their walk to school. Mooroobool Walking Bus - The walking bus departs from the corner of Balaclava Road and Irene Street at 7:40am every Friday. Supervision is from 7:30am. Students are supervised by adults on their walk to school. Scooter Bus - The scooter bus leaves from Super Cheap Auto on Mulgrave Road every Wednesday at 7:45am. Supervision is from 7:30am. Students are supervised as they scoot to school. Helmets are required to be worn. Mooroobool Bike Bus - Bike Bus departs Kangaroos Football Ground on Irene Street every Tuesday at 7:40am. Supervision is from 7:20am. Students are supervised by adults as they ride to school. Bayview Bike Bus - Bike Bus departs the Community Centre at the corner of Toogood Road and Jasper Street every Friday. Supervision is from 7:20am. Students are supervised by adults as they ride to school. Travel Smart activities are organised and run by a successful partnership of parents and teachers. As a Travel Smart volunteer, parents are expected to abide by the guidelines outlined in the OLHOC Volunteers Induction Kit. For each supervised Travel Smart activity, a group leader/s will be able to guide them and provide easy-to-follow instructions for that particular activity. All Travel Smart volunteers are expected to commit and participate in the following: * Attend an induction with the Travel Smart Co-ordinator at the beginning of the school year * Attend a safety briefing at school each term. * Ensure Travel Smart Procedures are followed (as determined by the Co-ordinator) If you would like to join the team of Travel Smart activity volunteers or learn more about how you can be involved in the program, please register your interest with Heather Cochrane (Travel Smart Co-ordinator) by phoning 4054 2566 or emailing hcochrane@cns.catholic.edu.au For more information refer to the school’s newsletter for all Travel Smart news.

MICHAEL COLEM AN Michael Coleman did not have a good start in life. It could be said that his experience mirrored that of many of the over 43,000* children living in out-of-home care in Australia today. By seven or eight years of age Michael had witnessed domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and his mother’s poor mental health – the latter eventually forcing him into the foster care system. Though only in care for a short period of time it was enough to show Michael that there was another way of living and he could make different choices as he grew up. We therefore tip our hats to Michael’s foster parents whose influence, though short, was obviously profound. Today Michael is a police officer and he qualifies as another one of our community’s superheroes. *Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2015

You will learn in your introductory sessions how to engage your CORE (your deep abdominal muscles) a breathing technique and the fundamental Pilates exercises that are included in a beginners Pilates Reformer class. You will strike up friendships with the clients of the studios, many of whom often take classes together followed by coffee or walks. Here are some tips to follow. EYES
• On the morning of your wedding day, check you eyes for any signs of redness, especially if you had a sleepless night • If there is any redness in your eyes, it should be eliminated: red eyes do not photograph well. • Speak to your pharmacist about eye drops.
LIPS
LOOKING GORGEOUS ON YOUR WEDDING DAY LO O K I NG Y OUR V E RY B E ST I S EVERY B R I D E S D RE AM O N HE R W E DDI NG D AY.
• Lips tend to go dry when we are under stress or nervous. • If the lips are dry and flaky, the lipstick will never go on smoothly, your wedding makeup will not look perfect, and it will show in photos. • Prepare your lips by using lip balm for 2 weeks before the wedding 3 times a day and overnight. On the morning of your wedding day, keep re-applying it until the makeup artist applies lip colour. • Vitamin C Lip Protection can be used under your favorite lipstick to nourish your lips without colour fading away.
FACE
• To look your best on your wedding day, you have to start preparing your skin in advance. Check your skin for blemishes, redness, dryness and any flaws. Use good moisturizing cream to eliminate dryness; have a couple of facials if needed. If you have a more serious condition, consult a dermatologist way in advance. • If you want to have a couple of facials before your wedding (which is a good idea), have the last session at least one week prior to the wedding so all possible redness will calm down.
TO TAN OR NOT TO TAN
• If you decide to go tanning for your wedding, make sure you are : 1. Not over-doing it 2. Not over-drying your skin. • You have to give it a “trial run” a month or two before the wedding. Check your skin for flaking. Stop tanning sessions at the first sign of dryness or flakiness: if your skin is flaky, no amount of makeup can cover that and your face will not photograph well!

Research is showing that if you have some degree of hearing loss and improve it, then you also improve your quality of life and the quality of life of your family and those you interact with. Hearing is one of our most important senses and we often take it for granted. Our ability to hear allows us to communicate and enjoy life through music, sounds and conversation. “If you make a New Year’s resolution to do something about your hearing – to get fully involved in life – not only do you improve relationships, but you also enjoy a better quality of life both physically and mentally.” explains Joanna. “Hearing is one of the most neglected senses. So few people seek hearing assistance when they need it. Hearing loss can make people look or feel old, so people are afraid to face it or be seen seeking help. Statistics have shown it can take up to seven years before people take any action.” Don’t let hearing loss disrupt your lifestyle! It’s time to make the resolution to take charge of your hearing. Our experienced clinicians can conduct tests and help you take appropriate measures to protect your hearing, counsel on noise exposure, as well as provide ear protection and amplification to improve your hearing thresholds. Hearing loss creeps up on you; it’s kind of insidious - you don’t notice it until something happens and often relationships are impacted because there’s a barrier in communication. It can be very distressing to lose your hearing, but no one needs to put up with this loss! There are so many people who could benefit from a consultation, but they may not be aware of the wonderful solutions available to help them combat this loss.

The stigma of those ugly beige bananas is a thing of the past. The advances in hearing technology are outstandingly smart and hearing aids are now totally concealed. These days you can even use your iPhone as an external microphone to amplify straight to your hearing aid! “We are an independent boutique clinic, valuing service and offering more choice of innovative products. Three generations of our family have been in hearing health care. We understand hearing loss because five members of our family have experienced it. Hearing is a very personal sense; we know what people are going through when facing hearing loss.” says Joanna. Signs of Hearing Loss: • Asking people to repeat themselves • Cranking up the volume on the TV or radio • Misunderstanding conversations – often missing beginnings and endings of words • Difficulty hearing with background noise • Ringing or buzzing (known as tinnitus) usually indicates some damage to the hearing system Don’t miss another precious word! His expertise and knowledge is evident at the Cairns Fertility Centre, where highly knowledgeable professionals offer individualised reproductive services, helping people achieve their dream of becoming parents. “Infertility can be emotionally stressful, and our team understand the special needs of patients undergoing infertility treatment and supports them throughout the process,” Ms Tyrer said. “They’re incredibly knowledgeable.” The modern and comfortable facility takes up the entire fourth floor of the Central Apartment Building and has a warm and welcoming environment. While it’s located on busy McLeod Street, it has free onsite undercover parking, making it extra convenient for patients and staff.

I actually just delivered two sets of twins in two days - that was very exciting.” She is passionate about all areas of women’s health and is now making it more affordable and accessible to treat women with precancer changes to the cervix who do not have health insurance. “It’s distressing for patients who have an abnormal Pap smear when they’re uninsured and they have to wait for public hospital access,” she said. “It could take months, so we want to improve the affordability and accessibility of treatment for them.” Dr Jackson is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and worked in specialist centres in Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia after graduating from medical school in Victoria. Now she calls Cairns home with her husband Ian and their two young toddlers. “We love Cairns, and we always knew we would return to raise our family,” she said. “We love the lifestyle and the quality of life. An Endorsed Eligible Midwife, Deanna is passionate about providing individualised, safe, quality care that is holistic, culturally appropriate and acknowledges women’s spiritual, physical, social, cultural and emotional needs. Her delight in her surroundings and responsibilities is palpable.
“We are a Baby Friendly Accredited Unit. Our Lactation Consultant is available to assist new mothers with breastfeeding and any other needs” says Deanna
“The new facility is a wonderful place to work. As midwives, we support the woman’s choice of care provider and work with them to ensure our mothers receive precisely the care they hoped for. The total number of obstetricians in the unit has increased to five, and three paediatricians join a strong cohort of Midwives and a lactation consultant to provide holistic care covering antenatal, childbirth and beyond.
Each welcoming, state of the art birth suite sports a colourful mural beside a spacious labouring pool, with themes of Reef, Earth and Rainforest.

Nursery was designed with this in mind. In recognition of the fact that giving birth doesn’t normally allow for normal dining times to be recognised, the unit has 24 hour room service, and even offers the lovely touch of a celebratory candlelit dinner to women and their partners on the eve of departure from the unit. In 2017, the unit will introduce an exciting new service – the ‘Know Your Midwife’ program, allowing women to build a relationship with a small team of midwives and their obstetrician who will follow them through labour, birth and postpartum. It is well documented that women who know their midwife cope better physically and emotionally and have more positive experiences of labour and birth.
Also in 2017, the unit will welcome the addition of an Allied Health Service, incorporating Physiotherapists (specialising in Women’s Health) and other allied health services. “The addition of Physiotherapists will enhance care and support to women throughout the woman’s journey through the antenatal and postnatal period. “Childbirth is a normal life event, and birth is best in an environment in which women feel safe and comfortable. We’ve certainly achieved this in the Women’s Health Unit at Cairns Private Hospital,” says Deanna.

TAKING CAIRNS UPWARDS AND ONWARDS FLECKER HOUSE
Flecker House made city history when it first opened its doors at 3-5 Upward Street in the late 1980s. The four-story building was the fist exclusive medical facility of its kind, housing some of the best medical specialists in Cairns. Jointly financed by specialist doctors, the building was named after Hugo Flecker, an Australian medical practitioner, radiotherapist, toxicologist and natural historian. The Flecker Botanic Gardens are also named in his honour. Today the building still houses some of the top medical specialists in the city including a dermatologist, general surgeon, eye specialist, paediatricians, thoracic physician, orthopaedic surgeon, obstetrician, gynaecologist, and an ear, nose and throat specialist,Hematologist, Dermatologist to name just a few of its medical professionals and general practitioners as well as a specialist CPAP shop. Upward Street was chosen as the site due to its close proximity to both the Cairns Private Hospital, which is just 80 metres away, and the Cairns Hospital, which is 250 metres south. The building, which is serviced by a lift, has always had easy off-street parking for tenants and clients and always included a cafÊ on the second floor where patients and visitors still enjoy light meals and snacks. Flecker House was also home to the city’s first CAT Scan, brought to Cairns by Australian Diagnostic Services, now known as Cairns Diagnostic Imaging, which has since moved from Flecker House as it expanded. While the original specialist doctors took a gamble financing the building, it has paid off and is still one of the most widely used medical facilities in the city today.

SON OF MY FATHER DR TIM WARNOCK
Flecker House has four clinical specialists whose fathers also practiced medicine in the Far North: Dr. Tim Warnock (Paediatrician), Dr Mike Mansfield (Ortho and Sports), Dr. John Knott (Vascular Surgeon), and Tom Wright (Obstetrics and Gynaecology).
Tim did his basic training in Brisbane, advanced training in Brisbane and Sydney, then headed to the UK on 12 months’ foreign exchange to work at King’s College Hospital in London, where he became involved in diabetes research.
That’s pretty unique; around fifty years’ involvement in medicine in the Far North for those families.
“However, I wanted to work in a general district hospital, so I was based at hospital in a little town called Farnborough in Kent for 12 months.
Locally raised Paediatrician Dr Tim Warnock lived and breathed medicine from an early age, gaining experience in his father’s very popular general practice in Babinda, and to this day very proud of the iconic Irish doctor.
Ground Floor, Flecker House 5 Upward Street, Cairns, Qld 4870 Ph: (07) 4031 1133
“Growing up in Babinda was just brilliant. Everyone knew one another and dad, ‘Dr Bob’, was a household name; everyone loved him and the local community health centre in Cardwell is now named after him,” says Tim.
WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER
The Warnock boys went off to boarding school at Ipswich Grammar. After leaving school Tim took off to University of Queensland to pursue medicine, returning home in the holidays to work as receptionist in his dad’s practice. “When I did my elective at the end of fifth year, I could choose to go anywhere basically, so I drove from Brisbane through to Launceston with two female student friends. “On arrival, the Medical Superintendent asked what we wanted to do while we were there. ‘Medicine. Medicine,’ said the girls in quick succession. I said ‘Not surgery’,” laughs Tim. “The Med Super suggested Paediatrics, and I thought that sounded just great.”
CairnsLife 62 Magazine
“I arrived back in Cairns in January 1990, just after number two son was born. At the time, there were three of us doing paediatric work, and in 1998 we started a multidisciplinary diabetes clinic. I was the medical representative for the Cairns Hospital adolescent ward project this year and I liaise monthly with the Child and Youth Mental Health team as well as belonging to that dying race of visiting medical officers. So, what does a Paediatrics Specialist do on his rare days off? “Photography. In fact, I’m working with two solicitors on a Tanks exhibition called ‘Docs Day Off’. Past President, and now Vice President of the Cairns Photographic Society, I usually put a few photos in the Cairns Show, and I’m sponsoring the Young Photographer section this year. “I’ve developed a bit of a reputation for being the baby photographer at Caesarean Sections. I pinch the camera from dad, to take memorable pictures of their beautiful healthy baby being born while the camera is forgotten as dad’s attention is entirely focused on the arrival,” Tim laughs.

I was brought up in country Victoria and after finishing year 12 of High School, I went to the University of Melbourne to study Medicine. This was very happy and challenging time in my life and I made a lot of good friends. I graduated with honours in 1975 and did 2 years residency at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. I knew that I wanted to be a Dermatologist, so, I recommenced study and training and became a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists in 1984. I subsequently worked in private practice in Melbourne and was also a Consultant Dermatologist at St Vincent’s Hospital, which was a great experience. Following a holiday in Cairns, my wife Judy and I decided to move here permanently That was in 1987 and it was one of the best decisions we have made. I set up a private practice at Flecker House, and have been here ever since. I was also the Consultant Dermatologist at Cairns Base Hospital for a long time. It has been very rewarding and interesting for me to treat so many patients with such a large variety of skin disorders. Skin cancer is a big problem here North Queensland has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. This includes melanoma and non-melanotic skin cancers such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. When a patient presents to me with multiple skin lesions I am grateful that I can rely on my training to discern the difference between them. Even some rashes can be mistaken as skin cancer to the untrained eye. I talk to the patient about the diagnosis and proposed management and we discuss their expectations of treatment. Then we embark on the best treatment option for that patient. Thankfully I can utilise the various treatment options which are now available for skin cancer. Those patients who need skin surgery can have it done in my treatment room. I am always ably assisted by Leanne who is our highly capable, trained nurse. Leanne is very attentive to all our patients. Apart from performing skin surgery, I treat a lot of common dermatological problems such as acne , eczema and psoriasis. These can cause huge physical and emotional distress in patient’s lives. It is reassuring to know
CairnsLife 63 Magazine
that there are also many treatment options which produce very good results. For example, even severe acne can be cured with a medication. However, the wide range of rashes many of which are rare - can pose interesting and difficult challenges and may require a skin biopsy. In this respect I am very fortunate to have had the support of wonderful pathology service here. (Thanks Dr Peter Chow!). Dermatologists also see skin problems which are associated with general medical conditions. If these are not recognised, they can have serious health implications. Again, this is where the training is so significant. Current research and trends in treatment are very important. To keep myself up to date with these, I frequently attend conferences of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. As well, I am a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the European Academy of Venereology and Dermatology. I have attended their meetings on a regular basis. When you live in a regional area, it is essential to keep reading the medical journals and to maintain communications and discussions with other Dermatologists and medical colleagues. In the time that I have lived in Cairns, I have helped organise four major conferences of The Australasian College of Dermatologists at various venues in Cairns. These were very successful and fun too. The delegates who came here from many other countries all loved visiting this part of the world and were amazed by the beautiful rainforest, reef and tablelands that surround us. During last year I organised our 40th year reunion for the Melbourne University Medical School. I can’t believe how quickly the time has passed since our student days. For me, Dermatology in Cairns has been an interesting, rewarding and wonderful experience. Many of my patients have become my friends and I am grateful for the privilege and experience of treating every one. I think that, being brought up in “the bush” has given me an understanding of what life is like for people who live in the far north. Judy has been a wonderful support throughout and it has been a great environment for us to bring up our 4 children. I would not have given up my chance to practice here for anything!

When you think about orthopaedic specialists – you mostly think about bone surgery. Definitely not in this doctor’s case. Doctor David Shepherd is passionately dedicated to spotlighting his professional and caring attention on all facets of a patient’s story, hopefully leading to a diagnosis that requires other possible treatment options. With over 22 years devoted to the better health and management of many patients’ musculoskeletal systems, he has wide-ranging experience dealing with bone injuries, disorders and diseases. His private practice in Flecker House provides comprehensive orthopaedic advice for diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of all areas of the body other than the cervical spine. “I like patients to know what to expect when they see me for a consultation”, says Dr Shepherd. He believes in the importance of considering all contributing factors to the patient’s problem, as well as all previous investigations, during the initial consultation. “I thoroughly examine their specific concerns and any X-ray images, as well as all of their interpersonal aspects” explains Dr Shepherd. With considerate focus on the problem and the issues its causing his patient in their daily lives, he is able to assess and make a definitive diagnosis. “I then honestly discuss what rehabilitative options there are for their best future. We discuss their expected outcomes and ways of restructuring lifestyle activities for the management of any discomfort.” An MRI or other tests may be required to gain a better picture. Dr Shepherd is renowned for providing valuable long term care to all his patients with low complication rates. “If the patient is able to avoid surgery and maximize their existing functions in new and different ways and improve their well-being with the use of antiinflammatories and physio, this would be the best outcome” explains Dr Shepherd. Most clients are relieved if surgery isn’t their best current option and comfortable to make relevant positive changes towards their rehabilitation. Other clients may struggle with significant lifestyle changes that might be required for the best long term results and to sustain a healthy functioning body. Dr Shepherd is much attuned to these issues and provides much caring and understanding support and advice. “It’s all about maintenance of the machinery” reiterates Dr Shepherd. He has been on this journey himself and has much empathy and understanding. After many years of not caring so much for his ‘machine’ David has joined the cycling gang and improved his strength, energy and social life. His wife and his dog are happy to get to spend more valuable healthy leisure time with him. Caring for the skeleton – the framework of our bodies – is imperative and with early detection and specialized support from Dr David Shepherd, patients with deteriorated bone issues will gain many long term rewards.

Dr Andrew Shearer spent 12 years at Cairns Hospital before realising his dream of providing specialist haematology services to prevent patients having to travel south for treatment. Owner of the newly established Cairns Haematology & Oncology Clinic, Andrew helped build the public service at Cairns Hospital, originally working with just one other clinician and a handful of nurses. Dr Shearer continues to work part-time at The Liz Plummer Cancer Care Centre, which opened in 2011, employing approximately 50 staff. “The Centre quickly reached its capacity and we had some patients falling through the gaps, referred to Brisbane or Townsville, away from their families, and returning with big holes in their pockets. “There was no local private service for them to turn to. So, I made the decision to set up a private clinic to address the shortfall. “I could have stayed within the security of the public service, but something needed to be done to address the deficit and enable all patients to receive treatment here in Cairns. “My wife Meredine and I have strong Christian beliefs, and I’ve always been focused on service rather than my
academic career. We considered it a blessing to be able to do something positive to serve the community, and so we decided to branch out and open a haematology and oncology clinic in Cairns.
“She’s been so supportive all the way, and now works as my very efficient but unpaid Office Manager. Meredine designed the clinic; we wanted a peaceful, calm and healing environment.
“Driving home one day about two years ago, I saw a place to rent or buy and it seemed like a sign. We decided to bite the bullet and just do it,” says Dr Shearer.
“It’s been a long process setting up, but seeing people survive life threatening disease, their joy, and that of their families, makes it all worthwhile,” Andrew adds.
The clinic is light, airy and colourful, an uplifting environment where Andrew and two other haematologists and a radiation oncologist diagnose and treat blood related diseases, including cancer.
“Everything is the same here as Brisbane. You don’t have to leave Cairns for haematology treatments except in the case of very rare cancers that require highly specialised treatment.
“We do have plans for medical oncology, palliative care and allied health practitioners to join us as we build up our services.
“Anti cancer treatment has changed dramatically, away from the traditional chemotherapy, towards anti neoplastic enzyme and protein inhibitors. For example, for chronic myeloidleukaemia, previous curative treatment was stem cell transplant, but now most patients can just take a tablet,” says Andrew.
Born in Brisbane, Andrew completed his medical studies at the University of Queensland, followed by specialist medical training for oncology and haematology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and private and public practice in Sydney and regional NSW. Andrew and Meredine met at St. Vincent’s, where Meredine worked as a security officer. “Working with challenging patients, we used to question who was looking after who,” laughs Andrew. HIRING TOP TALENT HOW TO SAVE TIME AND MONEY AND DO IT RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING EVA GR A BNE R Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88
“The secret of my success is that we have gone to exceptional lengths to hire the best people in the world.” – Steve Jobs Hiring the best people starts at the beginning – The Interview process. Interviewing is an art, a skill and a dance. Should you, the interviewer, not be prepared before this process, you are greatly increasing the chances of hiring the wrong person and suffering the consequences by wasting your time and ultimately costing you money. I have interviewed hundreds (maybe thousands) of people throughout my working career and if I have learnt anything at all, it’s that people stretch the truth, even lie. Yes, shocking I know. But they do. So, how do you figure this out before you hire the candidate? Yes, reference checks should weed out any bad apples, but let’s not let it get that far. To interview someone and really get to the nitty gritty of what they have done and what they can do for your business takes preparation and understanding of the types of interview techniques there are and how best to use them based on the position you are interviewing for and your business. Here is a brief overview for you: Let’s start with Structured Interviews. There are two types – Behavioural and situational. Behavioural interview questions will involve asking the candidate to describe prior achievements and match those to what is required in the current job – “Tell me about a time …? ”. Situational interviews present a job-related hypothetical situation – “What would you do if …?” A diligent interviewer will probe deeply to assess the veracity and thought process behind the answers provided by the candidate. Structured interviews are predictive even for jobs that are deemed unstructured and research shows that they cause both the candidates and the interviewers to have a better and fairer interview experience. This type of interviewing can be time consuming as you need to write out the questions, test them and ensure interviewers stick to them. You may also need to refresh them on a regular basis so that candidates don’t compare notes. Unstructured interviews only explain 14% of an employee’s performance whereby structured is 26%, therefore, probably not recommended as much. Basing an individual’s work performance on questions such as “What is your greatest strength/weakness?” or “How many petrol stations are there in Sydney” to even worse “How many golf balls would fit into a 747?” is absolutely worthless and will have little (if any) ability to predict how a candidate will perform in a job.
I believe that the best indicator of how someone will perform in a job is to give them a sample piece of work, similar to that which they would do in the job, and assess their performance on that. None of these techniques are perfect but combine a bit of each, ie: Structured, preferably leaning more towards behavioural with sample testing plus psychometric (general cognitive ability) testing, this will give you a balanced, objective overview of your potential future employee. I hope this helps clear the fog of interviewing techniques for you, it’s a topic that can go on forever and I am sure there are great books out there that you can read on the subject, however, I recommend you call your favourite recruiter (Me?!) and ask them to help guide you through the process, in fact they will do the majority of the work for you and help you structure an interview guide for the position you are recruiting for. One less thing to worry about in your busy day! I also have access to an eBook written by my friend and mentor Ross Clennett “Interviewing and candidate assessment: Hire right … the first time” which goes into much more detail than I have. UNOCCUPANCY, INSURANCE AND THE FINE PRINT
At this time of year we are all leaving our home or place of business for short and sometimes long periods of time while we holiday and visit family. But did you know that your Home and Contents insurance can be voided if you unoccupy your dwelling?
• Have someone come to the house/ business and collect your mail daily and check on your dwelling in your absence • Give a key to a trusted neighbor, family member, staff member or friend to come and check on the premises every couple of days
GR AH A M K O CH
It pays to read the fine print in your insurance policies product disclosure statement, as some direct insurance companies will void your insurance if you unoccupy your dwelling for as little as 24 hours. It’s a ridiculous timeframe I know, but some of the super cheap direct insurance offers in the marketplace have this listed in their fine print. So what does that mean for you if you have a policy like this? Well in the case of the 24 hour period, if you left your home unoccupied for 24 hours or more and something were to happen while you were away (i.e. you got robbed, your power goes out and trips important appliances like fridges and freezers) – it means you are unable to claim on your insurance.
Some insurance companies once your broker has contacted them and advised of your extended period of leave from your dwelling will send you an agreement for your cover to continue.

There is traditionally an unoccupancy clause in most Home and Contents policies, but the most common ones are anywhere between 60-100 days. So how can you prevent having your insurance policy voided if you decide to leave your home/business for an extended period of time? Here are some tips and suggestions we give to our clients: • Contact your insurance broker before you depart and ask them what their advice is to ensure you do not void your insurance policy in your absence and follow their advice. • Have someone house sit for you – you’d be surprised how many people would love to house sit

The majority of insurance companies define “occupied” residence when talking about a home as a home that is furnished such that it is comfortably habitable and you, your family or someone with your consent has resided in the home overnight: • Be connected to hot and cold running water • Be connected to the electricity supply • Contain a functioning refrigerator • Contain at least one (1) usable bed/ mattress • Contain at least one (1) dining table or bench chair and some other furniture If you are wise enough to use an insurance broker, they act for you and handle all interactions with the insurance company on your behalf, this ensures you get the best possible outcome. e: manager@kibgroup.com.au w: www.kibcairns.com.au Disclaimer This information may not be appropriate for your individual objectives, financial situation or needs and you should seek advice from a qualified insurance broker before making any insurance decisions. New Year without a carefully developed plan and strategy to guide your way forward
”
Have you sat down and reflected on the year that was and strategised for the year ahead? If not, this is the perfect time of year to do so, as you’ve hopefully had some much needed down time with your loved ones and you’re relaxed and refreshed and ready to tackle 2017 with gusto! A fresh outlook and a renewed feeling within yourself as a business owner/ manager is the perfect time to be able to think clearly and creatively away from the tiredness that overcomes us all in the lead up to Christmas. I spend this time of the year planning and strategising with all of my clients as everyone is in the right head space to do so. If you want to achieve results with your marketing and public relations efforts, you can’t go into any New Year without a carefully developed plan and strategy to guide your way forward. You know the old adage – fail to plan, plan to fail!
CairnsLife 70 Magazine
It’s important to realise too that every year is different in business and market forces change, so the plan needs to change each year. You may notice that you have some new competitors in the marketplace, or that some have closed their doors. You may also have an increased demand for one product/ service over another all of a sudden – so what does that mean for your projected revenue streams? It’s time to consider the opportunities and threats for your business in 2017. The economy has moved into rising mode in a big way with so many exciting large scale projects already kicking off – you can breathe the optimism in as you walk the streets and it’s so great to see after such tough economic times in recent years. So how can you maximise the opportunities surrounding you? While your business might not receive direct work from these major projects, that doesn’t mean you won’t experience the flow on effects. These projects mean confidence in the market is rising, which will mean more investment in our region and more money flowing through our city. That type of upswing has a positive impact on everyone – more people gain employment, more businesses purchase products and services to keep up with demand and that in turn means more families spending money. This positive impact will take effect right down to the local green grocer and baker. So it’s time to maximise your marketing and public relations efforts and ride the wave coming in and start getting creative and making your business stand out from the pack so you are the one that’s ‘top of mind’ when people are making their purchasing decisions. Let’s Make 2017 Sparkle!

FIVE TOP TIPS TO START THE NEW YEAR SOLO SU Z A N N E H A DL E Y
The Festive Season can be a time of great joy as families come together and celebrate but often it signals the end of a relationship and where once you were part of a couple, part of a family doing things together, come the New Year, you find yourself going solo For those of you who find yourselves in this strange new normal or even those who have been flying solo for a little while now, here are my top tips to start the new year and your new life #Tip No 1 - Don’t repeat what didn’t work last year. Try a new way of doing things that were not working. If it was conflict at changeover times, particularly in a shared parenting arrangement. Where there is a changeover every week, pretty normal in separated households, look for ways to minimise the opportunities for conflict. If picking up the children from the former partner’s home is causing problems and it does time and again, find a neutral venue. No not a Police Station or a shopping centre. If the children are at school, collect them from school on changeover day. Keep it normal for the children. If the children are not at school yet or your working commitments prevent an after school pick up, look at after school care, either at the school if it is offered or perhaps another venue. PCYC is an option worth considering. Some schools offer a bus service from the school to the PCYC for working parents. #Tip 2 - Let go - let go of negative thinking about your former partner, of the resentment at the relationship breakdown, at the inevitable change in your financial circumstances, of not being part of a couple any more; of parenting from separate households . Its not your fault the relationship broke down and its not your partner’s fault. Its happened, its not going to change and your best chance at a happier new life is to let go. This is your chance to make a new life for you and for your family and if it was a high conflict household, then a chance to let go of the stress that accompanied that conflict. Seek professional assistance to help you let go and learn to accommodate the new life that is now yours. That old saying ‘the past is a foreign country and nobody lives there any more’ should become your motto for the new you in your new life Tip #3 - Be kind - be kind to yourself. Give yourself time to adjust to your new status. Particularly avoid rushing into a new relationship. When parties separate, there is a period of adjustment for at least one of them. By being kind to yourself, taking time out, learning a new skill you;ve always wanted to try, signing up for a meditation course or perhaps joining a gym, you
give yourself time to find yourself again as a solo pilot and time to heal. Be kind to your former partner. Yes you are hurting after the breakdown, but causing hurt to another does not heal you or your family. Put Tip #2 into play and let go of that negative thinking. By being kind to the other party, the way forward into your new life is made easier. IT may even make the difference between a court battle and a negotiated outcome when it comes to property and child matters. Be kind to your family. It was your relationship with your partner that broke down, not their relationship with the other parent. Children still love their parents, no matter how old the children are. By being kind to your family by letting go of negative thinking and acting on Tip #1 and #2, you make it easier for your family to adjust to the change in circumstances. Join with your former partner in engaging the children in counselling to help them through the change. Relationships Australia offer various courses to assist children cope with a breakdown of their parents relationship Tip#4 - Keep your personal business your business. Discussing your personal circumstances about the relationship breakdown endlessly, with acquaintances old or new, does not help you move forward in your new life and in some situations, can bring an end to a good friendship. There are always plenty of people interested in your business, because it makes a delightful piece of gossip to share with other people. Remember once you start telling someone how ‘he done you wrong and this is how’ you have no control over that information and before you know it, your personal business becomes common knowledge. Stay off social media sites to air your grievances about your former partner. Not only is this bad form but in some cases it can backfire on you, particularly in a parenting case. If in doubt, see #Tip 2 above. See a professional for assistance to manage the grief of the loss of a relationship and save your friendships and stress on your family. Tip #5 - get professional advice on how to separate your finances. See a family lawyer for advice. An Accredited Specialist Family Lawyer can advise you not on how to start litigation but on the best way to formalise any agreement reached or negotiate an agreement. By seeking professional advice early, rather than being guided by well meaning friends who have sought the assistance of Professor Google for information, you have the best advice available from someone working exclusively in the area of Family Law. Your Family Lawyer is the best source of information about resources available for the newly separated and how to resolve parenting and property issues, mostly without the need to go to Court.

For parent migration Australia currently has two parent visa categories: the contributory parent visas and the parent visas. The differences between the two categories are that there are more visa places available each migration program year in the contributory parent visa. The contributory parent visa classes which currently take around 2 -3 years for approval are given much higher priority and therefore processed faster that the Parent visa which are currently taking in excess of 30 years. The contributory parent classes however are subject to a substantially higher second visa application charge of currently $43,600 per adult and higher assurance of support bond with a longer bond period. Following a review of the parent classes it has been announced that a new temporary parent visa will be introduced from 1 July 2017. The new temporary parent visa may be granted with a stay period of up to five years and the requirements will be that the parents be sponsored by their Australian children who will need to meet residence requirements and income and assets assessments. There will likely be a bond arrangement where sponsors are required to provide either a financial bond as a debt security, or an equivalent legally binding commitment. Parents will need to hold private health insurance and meet health and character requirements. The visa will be renewable and parents will be able to
renew their visa for further periods of up to five years at a time. 1 July 2017 will also see a new streamlined pathway to permanent residency for New Zealand Citizens. From 1 July 2017, New Zealand citizens will be eligible for this pathway if they arrived in Australia after 26th February 2001 and who were resident in Australia on 19 February 2016 and, at the time of application, have lived here for at least five years and earned income of at least the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (currently $53,000 p.a.) over the qualifying period. Applicants must also meet health, character and security checks. The visa application charge for this visa will be consistent with the General Skilled Migration Programme and applicants will only have to pay 20 percent of the visa fee when they lodge their application, with the remainder to be paid before the visa is granted. New Zealanders taking advantage of this pathway will usually be able to apply for citizenship after one year of permanent residence, provided they meet the remaining citizenship requirements. It is estimated that there are currently 60,000 – 70,000 New Zealanders in Australia who will be eligible under these new arrangements.

Losing your car keys can be one of the most frustrating, not to mention expensive, experiences car owners face today. While having transponder chips to prevent theft and remote-control key heads are a convenience, replacing lost keys can be a major headache. But, luckily, Troy Cummings Locksmiths can come to the rescue. “If you lose your keys or lock them in the car, we can help,” said owner Troy. “We pick cars up, bring them to our lockable compound, rekey them and reprogram the car. We can even delete keys in the incident where a car is stolen. “All cars built after 1996 have transponder and mobiliser units in them, so it’s a major situation when you lose your keys, but we can fix just about every make and model. Car owners no longer have to go back to the dealership to replace their keys.” Troy and his team of experts, who have been trusted locksmiths in Cairns for 14 years, have a range of automotive locksmith services that save you time, money and headaches. When keys are getting worn and becoming harder to operate, Troy and his team can bring them back to their original state. replace batteries in remotes to help prevent wear and tear on the remote. When the buttons on a remote are worn out and you’re facing spending hundreds of dollars getting a new remote, the specialists at Troy Cummings Locksmiths can help. When you bring your keys to them, they will remove the electronics inside and put them in a replacement shell, helping you avoid the expense of going to a dealership and ordering new ones. They can also cut, program and clone flip keys and remote-headed keys. Troy said one of best ways to reduce wear and tear on your ignition is to not have a big bundle of keys. “The weight of the keys on the ignition can pull the key up, damaging the key and the ignition bowl,” he said. “When you wear out the ignition bowl the ignition can get locked, leaving you stranded.” Wherever you get stranded, whether it’s in the bush or at a busy shopping centre, Troy and his team will assist you with a fast, professional service to get you back on the road again in no time at all. Something about this next statement makes me feel like I should be sat in a large room surrounded by like-minded and sympathetic fellows: My name is David and I like Renaults. Okay, I admit they can be quirky (perhaps even insane), plus the small volume they sell makes them stand out even more than they should. Regardless, I like them. And to be entirely fair, it’s not hard because they do make some extraordinarily cool cars. If you’re not convinced, then I can say with conviction that 2017 will change your mind. This is the year that will see the Australian launch of the new Megane GT220 - and this is a veritable fence masterpiece. Gone is the fat backside, the weird “diamond” grille and the overall “meh” styling - and thundering out of the factories of the garlic-swilling horde comes something comes something altogether different. Over the years, the clearly drug-fuelled design department at Renault have brought us an indescribable mess of styles. The sedate Laguna and the original boring Clio making way for the radically styled Vel Satis and the pointless 2 door MPV, the Avantime - neither of which, quite luckily, made it to our shores. But more recent incarnations of the Clio, and it’s steroid riddled sister the Kaptur, have shown that when it comes to bending tin the French
CairnsLife 78 Magazine
still have a good eye. It is perhaps because of these huge disparities in successor styling that many have shied away from driving away with some Gallic charm, preferring to pick Teutonic consistency over flair. It easy to see the steady growth of a VW Golf from it’s inception to now - anyone falling through a time warp from 1974 would have no problem picking the current equivalent. Which brings us neatly back to the new Megane. The new model is without question trying to steal VW customers - the overall poise of the car, the pricing and lineup all mirror the current Golf range. The only thing missing is the replacement for the mad GT220 RS turbo which for the moment looks like arriving in 2018. Although the new GT Line (even with it’s smaller 1.6 turbo engine) does come quite close to the 2.0L GTI. The GT starting from $38K on the road should attract a lot of interest. Excellent extended warranties and an improved dealer network will help too. Interiors are stunningly appointed and build quality has long been equal to Frankfurt and Stuttgart. Although I can’t wait to see the fire breathing monster that is scheduled for next year, if you are looking for a hot hatch the Megane does fit the bill, there may be better Golfs, but they are without doubt boring by comparison!

SURVIVING CYCLONES There is one main reason that Queenslanders survive cyclones, and that reason is that we are ready and well prepared when these otherwise deadly and destructive events occur. Over the next few pages we have worked with Cairns Regional Council to create a guide to ensure that you are prepared should 2017 see any of the predicted major weather events unfolding. Of course it may not happen but if it does, we can retain our solid reputation for level heads, excellent preparation and coming through the even the most severe weather events unscathed.
TOP 5 TIPS FOR YOUR HOUSEHOLD EMERGENCY KIT
Have some cash - if the power goes down ATMs and EFTPOS won’t be working Store your torch batteries separately (not in the torch) to stop them draining or even worse, rusting Check your water containers are well sealed and replace any that aren’t Rather than store paper documents, scan them and store on a thumb drive (USB) Include waterproof matches or cigarette lighters so you can light candles or your gas stove And don’t forget a can opener and scissors so you can actually get into those food packages

Be ready Cairns
Part of living in the tropics is being prepared for cyclones, storms and associated flooding. We encourage people to Plan.Pack.Listen
HAVE A HOUSEHOLD EMERGENCY PLAN Are you in a storm surge or flood zone? n Know in advance if you will stay at home or leave n Determine your primary & secondary evacuation routes n Establish the safest place in your house to shelter n Remove or secure anything in your yard that could become a missile in strong winds n Make sure your entire household knows what to do

STAY INFORMED Tune in to local radio stations: ABC Far North - 106.7FM Community Radio - 89.1 FM Bumma Bippera Media - 98.7 FM For information during a cyclone Ring the Disaster Coordination Centre on 4044 3377
What does Plan, Pack, Listen mean? Plan - have a household emergency plan Everyone in your household should know what they will do in an emergency situation. Remember, disaster can strike at any time; you may be at work, the kids could be at school, a family member may be travelling, so everyone needs to know where to meet, where you will evacuate if needed and what each person can do to be prepared. Pack - pack a household emergency kit.
After a few years of false alarms and non-events, it’s easy to become complacent. But cyclones, flooding, landslips and other natural threats are always a possibility in the Cairns region. It’s never too early to make your plan, stock your emergency kit and talk to your family about what you would do if you had to leave your home. But it can be left too late. The best time to make your preparations is when there is no threat. Being ready now will avoid panic later and lead to a faster recovery.
Can you survive for three days without power, food and water? Basic infrastructure can be badly damaged in a disaster situation. You will need to be self-sufficient until services are re-established. Your household emergency kit should have everything your household will need from food to medicine, clothes to cash, cooking equipment and packaged food.
Why do I need a household emergency kit, I already have everything in the house?
Listen - keep informed
However there can be little or no warning of other hazards such as fire or an earthquake. Having a kit that you can grab immediately is very important, especially if you need to take unexpected actions in a hurry.
It’s up to individuals to inform themselves of what is happening, before, during and after a disaster. A lot of information will come from many different sources. Cairns Regional Council manages coordinated disaster response making us the single source of truth - so check our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts , or listen to our broadcast partners ABC radio, Cairns Community Radio (multilingual broadcast) and Bumma Bippera Media (Indigenous radio). Other reliable sources include: the Bureau of Meteorology and the Queensland Government website, search for “emergency services and safety. What is the most common mistake people make when preparing for a disaster? In one word, complacency!
We normally have a couple of days’ notice of an imminent cyclone but by then it’s too late to buy anything missing from your kit - lots of people are frantically doing the same thing.
So how many cyclones will we get this season? This question comes up every year! There is no hard and fast formula for establishing the likelihood of cyclones The Bureau of Meteorology provides an outlook at the start of the cyclone season identifying the “likelihood” of cyclones forming and crossing the coast. The best advice is to be prepared any way. Your preparation won’t go to waste, because if a cyclone does strike, you’ll be ready. It could be a severe storm, flooding or an ex-tropical cyclone which cause havoc. And if it doesn’t happen you’ll have a head start for next year!

4 0 Po n z o S t reet , Wo ree Thanks to Nqpetro, businesses, industrial sites, retails outlets and essential service facilities can have power throughout the harsh weather. The locally owned and operated business supplies back-up fuel tanks and auxiliary storage units that ensure generators are well stocked with fuel to keep operations running smoothly despite losing power. “We have a range of storage tanks that sit on the ground and can hold between 1000 and 100,000 litres of fuel that can be piped into a generator,” operations manager Paul Redfern said. “If we’re having long-term power outages during a cyclone or bad weather, people can fill up their tanks and keep their generators going. We have tanks that have up to 10 days of storage to help people get through times without power.
www. n q pet ro .co m .au www. f e s t an ks.co m .au “We offer a range of sizes and styles of relocatable fuel tanks, which are ideal for construction, civil and mining applications as well as all businesses and services that use generators.” Nqpetro, led by founder and managing director Craig Cygler, started in Cairns in 2004 with Craig and one fitter. Today its 41 staff service and install petroleum equipment throughout Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The trusted fuel equipment specialists moved to its large purpose-built facility in July this year. “This expansion has been focused around providing

our customers and our staff with the facilities necessary to better service their needs and requirements,” Paul said. With cyclone season now upon us, turn to the experts at Nqpetro to ensure you won’t have any disruption to your business during severe weather. “We prefer not to have any cyclones, but if they do happen at least businesses and essential services can keep operating,” Paul said. “They can hire a tank or buy one from us to have that extra storage that will keep their business operating.”
Cyclones and business
Not everyone can go to a shelter
Local businesses and accommodation providers have a key role to play in emergency situations.
A common misconception in Cairns is that if a cyclone strikes residents can head straight to the nearest shelter. This isn’t the case.
Accommodation As a tourist city there are large numbers of visitors in Cairns every day. If a cyclone or other disaster threatens the city, your guests will naturally be anxious and will look to you for assistance. Council has produced a guide for accommodation providers to help them be prepared for natural hazards and understand their obligations in caring for guests in an emergency.
Businesses In the days after a disaster, people will need basic essentials and other items to make themselves as comfortable as possible and start the process of rebuilding. Businesses that are well prepared will be able to get up and running quickly and thereby assist residents to get back on their feet. We recommend every business has a business continuity plan. The Queensland Government has great information and templates to help you put a plan together. Visit www.business.qld.gov.au and search for business continuity.
Cairns has two public storm tide cyclone shelters which are only open to people in an area impacted by storm surge who have been advised to evacuate. We do not advise evacuations in cyclones based on wind. In most cases, the safest thing to do in a cyclone is to shelter in place – to stay at home, make the preparations we recommend and ride it out with your household. If your home is built prior to 1982, or you don’t feel safe, arrange to stay with family or friends outside the area. If you do live in a storm surge zone, make the same arrangement now so you have a plan before a cyclone happens. Shelters are designed to accommodate a maximum number of people – they’re not built for comfort. You will be allocated a standard plastic chair and all your belongings must fit under the seat. There are no beds or mattresses. There are no cooking facilities or showers. You can’t smoke or drink alcohol. And you can’t bring your pet. They are a last resort for people with nowhere else to go. KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE IN CYCLONE SEASON SARAH & D ARREN ALC ORN
Anything happening in your world affects your pet’s world too. Weather events can really affect pets, and as we prepare for cyclone season this year, it’s important to also think about your pets and include them in your plans. Being prepared before a cyclone hits can make things a little easier for everyone. Here are some tips for this cyclone season with your pets. Individual needs will vary and you will need to decide on the best plan for your circumstances and region. Include your pet when you are setting up your emergency kit, be sure to remember: • Medications (for up to two weeks), medical and vaccination records and veterinarian details. • Sufficient food (including treats) and bottled water for each animal, for up to two weeks. Don’t forget the can opener if you have tinned food. • A familiar pet blanket or bedding, toys, grooming equipment. • A secure pet carrier, leash or harness to move any animals to safety. • Consider your animal’s sanitation needs important for their (and your) health – such as newspaper, paper towels disinfectant, rubbish bags. • Birds must eat daily – put special food and water dispensers in bird cages and
First Class
have a cover for the cage. • Ensure your pet has identification. • Keep a current photograph of each pet for identification purposes. • Record important telephone numbers, such as: veterinarian, pet information and advisory services. In the event of a cyclone occurring: • Secure animals inside so they do not take flight or run away. • Use a secure pet carrier/cage (especially for cats) and a leash or harness to transport animals to safety. • Ensure all vaccinations remain current. • It may be possible for your pet to be boarded in a safe environment away from the emergency zone. If this is the case, think about how you might be able to get there. • If you are able to house your animal in a temporary foster home, ensure your pet’s medical and feeding information, food, medicine and other supplies accompany them. • Ensure all pets are properly identified with contact details on their tags. If you do need to be evacuated, it is important to understand that most disaster shelters will not accept pets because of health and safety regulations You may have to confine your pet to home, or make boarding arrangements early. NEW HOMES DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND CYCLONIC WEATHER ROSLY N S M I T H
It’s that time of year when we wonder whether our home is strong enough to withstand the cyclonic weather. Is your current home built to cope with the kind of extremities of weather that we experience in North Queensland and do you understand what the cyclone ratings mean? One of the main reasons we consider building a new home is that all approved new construction is designed to the latest Australian Building Standards. This way we know the structural elements in our new homes are designed to withstand cyclonic wind forces and have been engineer certified to do so.
home owners that you should be performing regular maintenance tasks in and around your home.
After cyclone Althea in Townsville in 1971 and cyclone Tracey in Darwin 1974 the Australian Building Codes were revised and much work was done on testing for design wind speeds. As a result these stricter building codes were introduced in 1985.
There is a great comfort in the knowledge that building a new home has the structural elements designed to withstand those cyclonic forces. This doesn’t mean your new home has to look like a bunker but by incorporating good design elements with the practicality of suitable structural materials your home can be as individual as you like.
Maybe I should make it a bit easier to understand what cyclone ratings mean. There are 5 categories for rating cyclones that range from category 1 (mild) to category 5 (extreme). For construction in cyclonic areas there are generally 3 ratings for housing that can range from 1 (41 metres per second) to 3 (60 metres per second). We should really be calling them by their correct description which is ‘design wind speed for housing construction subject to protection from the surrounding terrain’ as that would save a lot of confusion. I say generally because they can range higher if the engineer deems it is necessary to design to a higher wind speed.
‘Wom en i n Bu i l d in g ’ Winner Q M BA 2016
Awa r d
Much of the cyclonic damage recently has been to older homes that were built before the changes, while most of the damage to newer homes these days is done by flying debris or fallen trees as a result of the strong winds. This is a general reminder for all
There are many homes that have had renovation work or additions that have not been designed or certified for cyclonic regions. These homes will continue to be damaged if they are not upgraded to the relevant current requirements. There are some owners who are aware of these requirements and still don’t upgrade their homes to current building standards, expecting insurance companies to carry the burden of these costs when claims are made.
Having spent over 30 years designing and building homes in cyclonic North Queensland, from Townsville to Mossman and most places in between, I am very familiar with what is required so come in and talk to me about the advantages of building your new home. As Cairns’ residents look forward to the opening of one of the most innovative and unique homes ever built in the city, which will be showcased at the end of this month, it’s no surprise to learn interest in the builders themselves has also been increasing. Neocon homes, led by builder and designer Lisa Costa, has experienced a surge in interest in its designs, not only due to its dynamic new home at Park Ridge Estate, but also because of its unique designs and high quality work standards. “We pride ourselves on being able to build on any block no matter if it’s on the side of a cliff, above a mineshaft or on a weird-shaped block,” said Lisa. “We love helping people build their perfect home, whether it’s from plans they supply or from one of our own designs. We are just very passionate about building. “We enjoy using new products, and as a team we are highly innovative,” Lisa said. “Our team is our greatest asset, and they care about their work and really give 100 per cent to the jobs we do. Their input is invaluable. Each one of them has great knowledge and innovative and different skills, and that collection of passion is very powerful as we work together.”
CairnsLife 100 Magazine
It’s not just their innovative ideas that set Neocon apart from other builders. Clients love that fact that at Neacon you deal with only one person for all your questions, concerns and issues from start to finish. “We want people to have the exact home they want, which is why we don’t mind at all when they want to make changes during the building process,” Lisa added. “The design process is such an incredibly personal thing, which is why we develop close relationships with our clients so we really understand what it is they want to achieve.” For dates and times of the opening of the spectacular new home at The Peak, which will also house Neocon’s office, visit www.neoconhomes.com.au or call Lisa on 0432 084 781. “We look forward to meeting the public at our open home later this month,” Lisa said. “We have all put our hearts and souls into it along with a lot of sweat - and perhaps even a few small tears.”
