ROBERT STEELE DIRECTOR - SAMSARA

As the cooler winter weather approaches, home design trends are turning towards warm and soothing decor. “People tend to stay inside at home a little bit more during the cooler months,” Samsara Furniture and Homewares owner/ designer Robert Steele said. “Winter is when we spend less home time outdoors and turn our interiors into cosy and warm atmospheres.” Soft textiles, organic pieces, textured natural products and decorative objects are the latest trends. Rugs and cushions, woven and tufted, are the latest home accessories along with natural furnishings. “Organic pieces made from wood and wicker are very popular right now and bring that warmth back into the house,” Robert said. “Feather-feel couches are also in demand as more people stay indoors during the winter when the sun goes down early.” Samsara has been one of the leading homewares and furniture stores in Cairns for 17 years and is renowned for offering unique, handmade pieces from around the world. “We travel all over to uncover the best, most interesting and exciting homewares to bring to our showroom,” Robert said. “Much of our stock is completely unique and all of our pieces are selected because of their intrinsic beauty and inherent quality.” Samsara is currently having an end-of-the-financial year sale before bringing in a huge range of new items. “We have five new containers coming in so we’re making room for all the new and exciting products,” Robert said. “We have some absolutely fantastic bargains at the moment and some beautiful pieces coming in soon.”

EMPOWERING LEADERS

in Learning CATHOLI C EDU C ATIO N WORDS BY MICHAEL SERENC

GIVING principals the tools they need to deliver a world class education is ensuring Catholic Education stays ahead of the curve in Far North Queensland. Catholic Education in the Cairns Diocese is embarking on an education revolution across its schools, as it positions its students for success in the 21st century. Shaping a renewed approach to educational excellence is a focus on empowering school leaders, combined with innovation, quality teaching, inclusion and parent engagement. Executive Director of Catholic Education Services, Bill Dixon, is excited about the future. “What we’re looking at here in the Cairns Diocese is ensuring that our system of schools is world class,” he explains. “We’re working together to determine what is going to provide the best learning environment for our students and going about ways in which to develop that.” The Cairns Diocese has 29 Catholic schools from Tully, north to the Torres Strait, educating almost 11,200 students. With such a big responsibility for the education and welfare of thousands of students, Cairns Catholic Education recently sent five senior leaders and principals on a professional development “Benchmark Tour” to Los Angeles and Ontario, Canada. The tour, which is part of the Executive Development for Education Leaders professional learning programme run by Queensland Education Leadership Institute (QELi) and Brisbane Catholic Education, exposed educators to a variety of Catholic school types and their systems, and the impact they were having on schools.

“The Catholic schools the group visited in Ontario are world class. They’re up there in the OECD rankings,” Bill says. “So we looked at what it is that Ontario is doing that is so successful and how can we bring those concepts back to our schools here in Cairns. “That QELi professional learning programme over the last three years has been a gamechanger for us in the way we do things. “It has informed our Strategic Directions going forward, with a strong focus on empowering our leaders to develop optimal learning and wellbeing for all students.” Within Cairns itself, St Joseph’s School in Parramatta Park, Mount Peter’s MacKillop Catholic College and Holy Cross School at Trinity Park, among other schools, are embarking on an exciting array of new projects and initiatives. St Joseph’s principal Gavin Rick has been on international best-practice seeking missions and his school is now undergoing an infrastructure blitz in its 90th year. About 80 per cent of the school is being rebuilt to house modern, vertically integrated 21st century classrooms known as Innovative Learning Environments (ILEs). “We need learning to be transformed and that’s happening through moving away from a very content, teacher-directed way of learning to a student-focused, innovative way of learning,” Gavin says. ILEs incorporate purpose-built furniture that can be rearranged throughout the day, from a traditional classroom setup facing the teacher to collaborative group setups between students and breakout spaces for those who prefer to learn in a quieter setting.

As the Diocese’s newest school in Cairns, MacKillop Catholic College is situated in an ideal future growth area south of the city. Principal Luke Reed said the school would eventually become a fully-fledged P-12 school with an early childcare centre. Sarah Hamilton, Principal of Holy Cross in Trinity Park spends time with students as part of the school’s flexible special needs program.

The school, which currently offers Prep to Year 4 classes, will offer Year 5 from next year. “One of the advantages of a new school is, as it’s being designed, the best thinking and research is being transferred into its physical facilities,” Luke says, adding that ILEs were in place at the school. “We’re developing a successful learning culture within our staff community, particularly with our student learning assistants in our classrooms. “They work very closely with our professional teaching staff in creating learning experiences that engage students in inquiry and give them instant feedback on what they’re learning, how they’re learning and most importantly, what’s next and what to do when they’re stuck.” Parent engagement also remains an important part of Catholic Education throughout the region, as Bill explains.

St Joseph’s students and their teacher Kerry Yelavich making use of ILEs to form a student focused, innovative learning space.

“We’ve got a common goal and that’s learning, growth and well-being for every student,” he says. “We’ve all got a stake in it – our families who entrust us with their children and we as teaching professionals. The synergy that happens when you’ve got a community like that is very powerful.”

MacKillop Catholic College is set to become a fully-fledged P-12 school with an early childcare centre.

Holy Cross principal Sarah Hamilton has been busy strengthening the school’s Catholic identity and promoting its culture of learning.

“We’ve got a common goal and that’s learning, growth and well-being for every student" “Within our culture to promote learning, we’re focusing on the use of technology to enhance student learning, so we’ve appointed an e-learning coordinator to look at how we can do that,” she says. “We’ve also appointed a leader of teaching and learning. She’s set up professional learning communities who meet a few times every term to look at data surrounding student reading levels and how to help students grow.” Part of the Catholic ethos is a strong sense of inclusion and Holy Cross is doing just that, with two special needs boys with Autism Spectrum Disorder welcomed into Prep this year. Through a modified and flexible programme, the school is providing the space and opportunity for the boys to realise their potential. But even within a plethora of school-driven projects, Bill says the Catholic ethos is always front of mind. “Our mantra is every student, every class, every day,” he says. “That’s what we believe will provide learning outcomes for each and every student.”

PAUL SJOGREN TA S WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER P H O T O B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H

As teachers, we kid ourselves that we are the font of all knowledge

Sitting at an office desk on the 17th floor of a Melbourne office building, punching figures into a computer, Trinity Anglican School principal Paul Sjogren pondered on the meaning of life. This was not what he had envisaged for his engineering career.

years before returning to Ballarat, taking on a role as boarding house managers, and starting a family.

“I was raised in Ballarat, regional Victoria, in a family comprising mum, dad, daughter, son and beagle. My regional upbringing has had a profound influence on me, and I avoid big cities like the plague,” says Paul.

The couple moved to Mackay, with Paul working at Whitsunday Anglican School for the next three years, followed by a role as deputy principal on the Sunshine Coast. However, the pair were “hell bent” on returning to North Queensland.

Completing an engineering degree at Melbourne University, Paul joined Telecom Australia as a civil engineer in their structural section.

“Six of 26 Anglican schools were looking for new principals in 2017, but I only looked at TAS. There’s so much good stuff happening here and I am loving the role.

“Telecom’s towers and masts had microwave repeaters on them and every time a new one went up, we had to perform analysis on them. It was the start of the new world of computerisation, and instead of being up a tower in the great outdoors, here I was inside an office building, pumping data into a machine. It was not for me.” In the early nineties, Paul was flown to Townsville, presented with the keys to a brand new Landcruiser and instructed to meet a guy called Mick at Julia Creek, which he duly did, driving 120km out bush to the job site, where he met the rest of the crew. “Starting work at 5am, we finished at 1.30pm and took off to the pub. I was young, impressionable and Victorian. The pub, a shed with corrugated iron bar, was 80 km away across one huge paddock with no road. I had a beautiful meal and slept that night in an elevated swag to avoid the scorpions and fell in love with North Queensland,” admits Paul. Paul returned to university to undertake a graduate diploma in Education. After marrying and spending the next three years in Melbourne, Paul and Tracey travelled to a small town in Central Indiana in USA, where they both worked for 2

CairnsLife 12 Magazine

“One Christmas Day, as the sleet came in at a 45° angle to our little house in Apollo Bay, we decided a move to Queensland was in order,” says Paul.

“TAS is now in its maturing phase, consolidating. We‘re thinking of what kind of a school we will be in 20, 50, 100 years’ time. We’re starting to think about what sort of legacy our early pioneers have left us, where our stewardship will lead the school in the future. “We have ex students who are achieving amazing things in their career and life, returning to TAS to share their stories with current students, explaining their pathways to success in a mentoring fashion. “As teachers, we kid ourselves that we are the font of all knowledge, yet we see two kids over a laptop or IPad coding to make a robot do what they command. They watch You Tube, they ask on social media, they know where to source the information they need. These are exciting times for our kids,” says Paul. With their oldest daughter at university in Melbourne, and the youngest studying in New York, Paul and Tracey are beginning to enjoy their spare time together. “Empty nests are not quite as bad as people make them out to be,” laughs Paul.

GLOBAL TROPICS FUTURE PROJECT FNQ WORDS BY JESSE SHORT

The future is now and the next generation of young professionals are already thinking about what direction they want to go. This year, the Global Tropics Future Project was launched, providing young scholars from Smithfield SHS, Trinity Beach SS, Caravonica SS and Yorkeys Knob SS with valuable enrichment and enhancement opportunities within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Department of Education, Tropical North Learning Academy and James Cook University collaborated on this enrichment opportunity to prepare students for a future in the global tropics. Students who attended the official launch of the project were selected from each school across years 5 to 9 on the basis of key criteria, including taking responsibility for their own learning, thinking critically and building respectful relationships when collaborating. Those that fulfilled the criteria had the privilege of taking advantage of this educational initiative, which began with an introduction on the careers and future directions by lecturer of electronic systems and The Internet of Things (IoT) engineering, Dr Bronson Philippa. “There are tremendous changes coming and I want to help you prepare for that.” Highlighting the probability of job losses due to

technology, Dr Philippa says: “In northern regions of Queensland, we’re looking at somewhere in the regions of half of jobs being at risk of being disrupted by technology.” Speaking about driving world class education for students in the local area was Principal of Smithfield State High School, Mr Barry Courtney, and Regional Director of Education Queensland – FNQ Region, Mr Stephen Bell, who officially launched the GTF project. After conclusion of these talks, children attended a handson workshop in the new state-ofthe-art IoT engineering lab space at JCU’s Cairns campus. Head of Innovation at TNLA Smithfield State High School, David Mayes, commented on the need to promote these developments and career opportunities to primary and secondary aged students early on so that they don’t miss out on them when they are looking for ways to engage in their field of interest in the future. Here’s what the children had to say about their future careers: “I want to learn about electronics and coding. I want to build and work with robots,” said Noah. “I’m interested in becoming an animator and working in cybersecurity,” said Ben.

“The first test of a truly great man is in his humility”. John Ruskin Bill Tweddell is the first James Cook University graduate to hold the post of Chancellor. His father would have been over the moon. “Dad had always wanted to be an engineer but his father died when Dad was only fifteen, so instead of studying, he found himself working. He was determined his own kids would have the opportunity for a University education. “All five of Dad’s children went to James Cook University and some of us went on to further studies at other universities. I have been surrounded by academicallygifted family members. One cousin achieved a PhD cum laude, another is a University Medallist, both from JCU. I’m saying this to make it sound like I’m highly intelligent too,” laughs Bill. The new Chancellor of JCU has a very infectious and sometimes self-deprecating humour, which is funny in itself, as he has a truly formidable curriculum vitae. Bill and wife Chris undertook parallel studies for some time. “I started with Arts and went on to Economics. Chris’s Commerce degree overlapped with my Economics studies. Sadly, anything I studied that

she did also, she did better than me,” Bill says with a grin. There’s that twinkle again, as Bill goes on to tell me that he was an “okay student” but not a good studier until he found something he loved, and that was foreign affairs. That love, and his main love, Chris, who unselfishly supported his diplomatic career from beginning to end, took Bill to great heights as Head of the Americas and Africa Division of the Department in Canberra, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Consul-General, Hong Kong and Macau, High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and Deputy High Commissioner, India, with earlier postings to Greece and Bangladesh. He was also Chief of Staff to the former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer. Bill’s last posting was Ambassador to the Philippines from 2012 to 2016. “I’m sure our two sons Andrew and Paul paid some covert price as sons of a diplomat, but their lived experience is something you can’t buy or learn. It was hard for Chris too: she’s a graduate in Commerce and could have had a great career in accounting.

James Cook University, Cairns Campus 1/14-88 McGregor Rd, Smithfield Ph: (07) 4232 1111

“Diplomacy was a pretty competitive, stressful and busy career but nothing would really have tempted me to kick on from that except for my old university. To be able to do something for the place that gave me such a start in life, as a student and employee, is humbling. “North Queensland is our home. It has always been heartland for me,” says Bill. In 2010 JCU recognised Bill as one of its Outstanding Alumni. “On the basis of what I did after university, rather than a stellar academic record,” Bill laughs. “I’m still settling in to my leisure activities. I walk a lot, and do Pilates. We bought an old Queenslander and we’re trying to cram the accumulated eclectic excess of eight overseas postings into this little house. “One of the great gifts of my forty years in the diplomatic service was the quality of the people, and I’m not just saying Australian Foreign Affairs Department officials, I mean Australians, and foreigners, from other walks of life, and if you are going to give that up, rather than going cold turkey, there’s no better environment to be in than the wonderfully enriching community of a university,” Bill concludes.

HIGHSCHOOL LEADS INNOVATION CHARGE

S MIT HF I E L D S TATE HI G H SCHO OL WORDS BY MICHAEL SERENC

Principal Barry Courtney says the school has been a trailblazer for innovation since the late 1990s and isn’t slowing down any time soon with several exciting programs underway. “All of us are working together to deliver world class, quality and futures-focused learning for kids,” he says. The school is undertaking three different programs simultaneously – the establishment of a Tropical North Learning Academy (TNLA), the Literate Graduate program and the Global Tropics Future Project (GTFP) in partnership with several local primary schools and James Cook University.

We want our students to transition into the future careers after school with success.

SMITHFIELD State High School is powering ahead into an exciting new era of innovation and technology in the 21st century.

The TNLA revolves around students looking at ways of improving life for people living in the tropics, while the GTFP focuses on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum.

The GTFP’s partnership with JCU’s Internet of Things (IoT) electronic engineering course offers similar subjects to students at the four participating schools, who have the chance to get a placement in the IoT course once they finish school. The Literate Graduate program takes a more holistic approach, aimed at shaping students under the six areas of critical thinking, communication, creativity, collaboration, citizenship and character. “Modern research says kids leaving school now will go through six to 10 different career changes with jobs that don’t even exist yet,” Barry says. “So we will need people who are not just good thinkers but also those of good character who can work within their communities, because that’s where the problems are that will need to be solved. “We want our students to transition into the future careers after school with success.”

STUDENTS BUZZING ABOUT ROBOTICS

THE exciting world of robotics is making waves amongst students at Smithfield State High School.

High last month, with school students from across the Far North participating.

School Director of Innovations David Mayes said Smithfield State High’s Robotics Club had been increasing in popularity since it started last year.

Students were tasked with performing a staged rescue with their robot, while also competing in a robot dance category.

“It’s growing every week to where now we have16 students,” he says.

WORDS BY MICHAEL SERENC

We feel that we’re really privileged to be in that situation

“We’ve got students who are trying to make their own Gameboy using our 3D printer, we’ve got a boy who’s made his own motorised scooter and girls who are programming drones to follow a flight path based on code. “There’s an important initiative coming from Education Queensland called #codingcounts which is pushing skillsets around coding and robotics. We will prepare students for the jobs of the future and develop their skills in critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and innovation.” The club participated in the “RoboCup Junior” Robotics Competition held at Smithfield CairnsLife 21 Magazine

“Five years ago there was only about 15 students who would come to this kind of event and last month we had over 150 students from 18 different schools,” David says. “This gives them a chance to test their skills so we can reflect and evaluate on how successful they are as well.” Adding to Smithfield High’s robotics club is a partnership with James Cook University, which sees experts visit the club and impart their knowledge on the students. “We feel that we’re really privileged to be in that situation,” David says.

RECORD BREAKING YEAR SK Y T R A N S

Record breaker and history maker Johnathan Thurston, is once again setting new records - this time in the regional airspace. As a co-owner of Skytrans, Johnathan is proud of the unprecedented commitment the airline makes to changing the lives of its customers. “This year we have set a new benchmark of service, with history making same day services to the Cape York and Torres Strait. This means people can travel for health services or conduct business meetings in just one day, as opposed to having to stay overnight or charter an aeroplane. “This is the first time in the history of this region, that an airline has been able to offer such convenience, all while accessing the Local Fares Scheme “said Johnathon Thurston. In just two years, the re-launched Skytrans has an impressive scoreboard of results under the skilled leadership of CEO Michael Thinee. “Strong local business is so important for the economic health of the region, and I am really proud that we have been able to scale our employment numbers from 34 to 141 people in just 24 months. CairnsLife 25 Magazine

“By using local contractors for services, along with our strong workforce, Skytrans is now providing an economic benefit of over $15 million to North Queensland” said Michael Thinee, CEO. The company has been smashing sponsorships left, right and centre with its Social Investment Program. To qualify for a sponsorship, the program must meet Skytrans health and wellbeing mandate. “Our Social Investment Program is centred around improving the quality of life in our communities. The programs we have invested in range from music and arts, sporting, tourism and events, aged care, employment, training and fundraising. We are equally proud of our big sponsorships, as we are of our grass-roots programs like hosting work experience students. “Skytrans are big believers in providing great role models, especially to the younger generations. Which is why we have invested in the North Queensland Cowboys Community Partnership program, working with former player Matty Bowen to run coaching clinics and inspirational talks throughout the region” said Michael Thinee, CEO.

1934

The people of Cairns started raising money to build an airport where aircraft were able to land and take off at all times, particularly in times of emergency.1936- The Cairns City Council bought 162 hectares of land and built three runways made of cinders, red earth, weathered rock and sand.

IT’S AN EXCITING TIME AT CAIRNS AIRPORT. Chief Executive Officer, Norris Carter says that this month the airport is rolling out a new strategy with a renewed focus on customers, whether passengers, airlines or airport tenants, in a way that’s economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. “How do we put these words into practice?” Mr Carter asks. “We want every passenger to arrive excited and depart delighted so we’re looking closely at our terminals to make sure we’re giving them smooth and seamless arrivals and departures.” We’re making sure we have the shopping offer and the food and beverage options our passengers want and that their time at Cairns Airport is a positive airport experience overall.” “Airlines are important customers at Cairns airport and we’re continuing to work with all our airline partners to make sure we are supporting them in their operations.” “We work with our airport tenants to help them be as successful as possible, too. This includes the General Aviation sector with whom we are now working more closely to make the most of the excellent aviation industry capabilities and opportunities these businesses offer.” “Growing airline capacity remains a priority to ensure that our business facilitates economic growth in our region.”

LIFE Aviation

“We’ve just appointed a new Chief Commercial Officer, Aviation, Paul McLean to lead this vital part of our business development and are delighted to be welcoming him to Cairns in early August.” “Paul brings excellent aviation industry experience with him having spent the past 12 years with Air Canada in senior sales and marketing roles, most recently as General Manager, Australia and New Zealand.”

access to direct flights that save them wasting time back tracking south during their overseas trips.” Mr Carter said that new direct international routes to Cairns will add to the already sound growth trends in passenger numbers at Cairns Airport.

“He’ll be responsible for working with airlines and the tourism industry to increase our direct international connections and so provide even more convenient access for visitors coming here to experience our region’s amazing natural assets, the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef and Tropical Rainforests.”

“In May this year we saw an overall increase in passenger numbers of 13,540 or 3.6% compared to the previous May. This included 9.6% growth in international passengers, boosted by additional flights by Hong Kong Airlines on their direct service from Hong Kong and Jetstar on their direct Bali service. It’s been interesting to see the latter is attracting international passengers visiting Cairns and Great Barrier Reef as well as locals taking Bali holiday breaks.”

“International flights bring enormous economic benefits to our region, boosting visitor numbers and offering freight opportunities. They give our visitors and local people

Baby et Lulu are a dazzling ARIA nominated musical duo bringing the romance and excitement of bustling Parisian street cafes to music venues across Australia. Listening to them perform makes you want to run a hot bath, burn some fig scented candles and drift away into a dreamy splendour filled with wild passion, cheeky cabaret cues and the most beautifully spell-binding French sounds. Their upcoming show at the Tanks Arts Centre this August as part of the 2017 Jazz Up North music series and Cairns Festival, may just be the most unexpectedly captivating and memorable show you’ll witness all year. Successful musicians in their own rights; Abby ‘Baby’ Dobson is the lead singer of Australian 90s pop group Leonardo’s Bride, and Lara ‘Lulu’ Goodridge is a celebrated violinist and vocalist for the Australia rock group FourPlay String Quartet. Baby and Lulu met a long time ago and became firm friends after realising that they both had a love of all things French. “I’ve been infatuated with France for as long as I can remember,” Lulu says. “It was at university that I discovered some of the great writers, poets and thinkers of France. And of course, there’s also the French music, cuisine, and cinema which continues to enthral me.” “The French language is a portal to everything delish,” adds Baby. After connecting over their respective French love affair, the playful duo also realised they both had a similar sense of ridiculousness and decided to sing a song together, in French, in harmony, on top of milk crates at a warehouse party, for the great fun of it. Eight years on, Baby et Lulu have formed a scintillating musical partnership which has been seducing audiences nationwide, and have released two albums in the process; the most recent of which was nominated for an ARIA Award. Their selection of classic and contemporary chansons include Serge Gainsbourg, Edith Piaf, Camille, Charles Aznavour and more, as well as their own original compositions written in French. For both audience and duo, Baby et Lulu allows Abby and Lara the exhilaration of stepping into two sassy and playful characters in a veritable celebration of la vie française. A heady combination of feminine couture - from elegant to va va voom, seductive and witty banter, romantic chansons sung exquisitely in French, and the extraordinary musicianship of the band, leaves them and their audiences, enraptured. “Our show is not strictly jazz,” explains Dobson. “In fact it’s not strictly anything!” “Every show is different, and they’re always uplifting and entertaining.” Baby et Lulu’s six piece band features some of the country’s finest jazz players, fronted by the playfulness and passion of Baby and Lulu dressed up in frou frou outfits and singing in heavenly harmony. Baby has also translated Leonardo’s Bride’s iconic pop hit Even When I’m Sleeping into French for their debut album Même quand Je Dors, and, if the stars just so happen to align, sparkling bright in the night sky across the Tanks Arts Centre this August, you may just be lucky enough to hear it. Baby et Lulu play the Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 25 August as part of the 2017 Jazz Up North series and Cairns Festival program. The world’s foremost purveyors of ‘bogan funk’ are about to launch their new International show to the world.

In Your Mind will be a strictly funk event, and punters are encouraged to dress funky to be in the running for Mr & Miss Bogan Funk 2018.

The Don Johnson/Butlers specialise in re-interpreting classic rock lyrics to iconic funk tracks from the 70’s & 80’s, in a live mash of the two disciplines.

Joining the band will be one of Melbourne’s hottest funk DJ’s Declan James, from PBS FM. His how ‘The Mothership’, is infamous for classic, deep funk and groove from the 70’s till now.

SATURDAY 8TH JULY Cairns Dinner Theatre at The Reef Hotel Casino Doors from 7.00pm – music from 7.00pm, band from 8.00pm Tickets $15 pre-sale, $20 on the door. www.cairnsdinnertheatre.com | 07 4051 4410

The Miss & Mr Bogan Funk Awards, are being kindly sponsored by Big Cat Green Island, and Cairns Sunset Cruises. Dress to impress and win a tour!

Their sartorial and instrumental stylings are pure funk, and their lyrical and refreshment leanings are pure bogan. In a nutshell, if George Clinton’s future funkadelic band members had worked on the South Australian docks and hooked up with Barnesy, this could have been the result.

In Your Mind is the new show featuring a fresh line-up, including former members of seminal indigenous band The Pad Boys, hot new tracks and dazzling special guests. Forming in mid-2014, The DJB’s have played events such as Brisbane Fringe Festival, Wallaby Creek Festival, Millaa Milla Bogan Bash and the Deadroots Festival.

The Don Johnson/Butlers present a wack show of lush funky grooves, hands-in-theair rock lyrics, glitzy sequins, classic stubby shorts and more chutzpah than Lemmy at an 80’s block party.

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW BELLA DONNA LASER CLINIC WORDS BY JANIE BARTON P H O T O S B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H

If you’re fed up with shaving and waxing, you can say goodbye to unwanted hair forever with the help of Bella Donna Cairns hair removal laser clinic. The newly opened clinic uses a state-of-the-art LightSheer Desire Diode Laser, a medical-grade laser, for permanent, painless and affordable hair removal. “The laser is very effective for permanent hair reduction, which is why it is used in prestigious clinics around Australia and internationally,” said clinic manager Nina. “One of the great things about this new laser is people don’t need as many treatments as they would have in the past or would have with IPL.” Even better news is the fact that the clinic has kept its prices down to make it affordable for all. “Excessive hair can be a huge self-esteem issue for people,” Nina said. “Some people are embarrassed or ashamed when they have unwanted hair, which is why I have kept my prices extremely low. For me, it’s about providing a service to people who really need it without costing them a fortune.” Unlike other hair removal clinics, Bella Donna Cairns charges the same fee for men and women.

“The amount of hair a person has doesn’t make a difference on how much time we spend on them,” Nina said. “We’re using the same laser and the same treatment process, so there is no need to charge more.” Another unique feature about Bella Donna Cairns is its private and comfortable environment. “When it comes to hair removal some people don’t necessarily want to be seen walking into a clinic or be seen by other customers, which is why I space appointments far enough apart so clients won’t see each other coming or going,” Nina said. “It’s private and confidential, which makes people feel very comfortable.” The clinic offers a free consultation with clients and offers a free patch test for those thinking about trying laser. Since the clinic opened, Nina has seen fantastic results with her clients. “It makes me very happy to see them so happy with the results,” she said. “So, we’re all winners!”

FROM the cane fields to the catwalk, Damian Garozzo is living the dream.

WORDS BY MICHAEL SERENC

Hard work and perseverance has seen the former Cairns man become a celebrated makeup artist to several of the world’s biggest supermodels, including Bella and Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Taylor Hill , Miranda Kerr and Princess Charlene of Monaco. A three-time Australian Champion ballroom dancer, Damian’s career could have been very different if he hadn’t picked up his first brush by accident during a dance competition in Singapore. With his dance partner’s makeup artist cancelling at the last minute, it was a then 14-year-old Damian who rolled up his sleeves and took to painting her face himself. The experience unveiled a hidden talent and five years later, Damian gave up his dancing career to study at Oscar-winning makeup artist Peter Frampton’s Institute of Cinemagraphic Makeup and Special Effects on the Gold Coast. Damian’s big break came working on a music video set for Aussie rock band Powderfinger and assisting Australian makeup maven Rae Morris at Australian Fashion Week shows. Following his dreams to Paris, he eventually found himself assisting makeup legend and Dior Makeup Creative Director Peter Philips on advertising campaigns for brands like Chanel and Dior. A decade later, Damian is now signed to an artist management agency representing him in Europe, the United States and United Kingdom. He returns to his home town next month for an exclusive “Makeup Masterclass” series. Raised in a family of Italian cane farmers, the proud Cairns local sees the Masterclass as an ideal way to give back to the community that has supported him since the beginning of his career. Participants will be able to learn real tips for the everyday woman of any age using products they may already own. Damian has also teamed up with several Australian makeup and skincare brand sponsors in an effort to encourage women to buy and support locally owned and made beauty brands. Coral Coast Catering COOKING UP A STORM WORDS BY MICHAEL SERENC

NO event is too big or small for Coral Coast Catering – just ask David Young. The business co-owner is regularly on the road, whether it’s serving up a scrumptious feast at the Mayor’s Maroon Community Ball in Cooktown or feeding the hungry masses at Cannon Park during race day. “We enjoy cooking for large numbers of people and being part of a big function,” David says.

“Every day is different and so are the menus, locations and how many people. You name it, we’ll go there.”

It’s all about forward planning.”

Starting Coral Coast Catering nine years ago with chef extraordinaire Peter Farr, David says the Cairns-based business has grown exponentially across Far North Queensland, averaging about 150 events per year. “When we first started, catering to 50 people was a decent sized function. Now we don’t even blink if we’re doing less than 300 people,” he says.

“We can do four or five functions in a day. We’ve catered for up to 1500 people in the same day. “It’s all about forward planning.” Weddings also form a big part of Coral Coast Catering’s clientele, with that industry alone worth $100 million to the Far North’s economy. David’s personal highlights include catering for a gathering of Hawaiibased scientists at Trinity Beach for the Cairns lunar eclipse in 2014 and a function held in honour of a famous Australian astronomer at Lakeland near Cooktown. David sees a bright future Coral Coast Catering, Far North Queensland’s premier catering company. “We just want to keep keeping adapting and evolving,” he says. “We like the travel aspect and seeing people come to the region and enjoying themselves.”

QUALITY. THE BEST KIND OF

ADVERTISING. EVA G RA BNER Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88

One of my favourite bloggers is Seth Godin. I receive his blogs on a daily basis and always enjoy what he writes as, for the majority of the time, what he has to say is relevant to me; and most likely similarly relevant to all of his readers. Recently he addressed the issue of quality and one’s interpretation of quality in different situations. He quoted “If you can reliably, and without drama, deliver precisely what you have promised, this is quality.” He follows with a few examples such as “This is what happens when a car, regardless of price, has doors that don’t squeak. Or when a website doesn’t go down. Or when your dry cleaning is ready on the day it’s promised, and your clothes are clean.” This really resonated with me as a recruitment consultant and business owner because recruitment is an extremely competitive industry and there are many companies out there offering premium services and ‘quality’ to their clients. It is a huge selling point in my business, however, unless a client has a benchmark against which they can compare, how do they really know that they are receiving a quality or premium service? To me, quality of service is everything and if you want to grow your business you need to provide your customers with a premium product or service. I have listed a few tips that we use on a daily basis in our business: Respond as quickly as possible Return those phone calls or respond to emails within 24 hours, don’t leave a person hanging for days on end because you are ‘busy’. Prioritise your days and ensure you call your customers. Know your customers I often spend months growing a relationship with a client before I recruit for them and that’s okay because it gives me an opportunity to get to know the business and the key people in it. Only recently I interviewed a ‘perfect’ candidate (on paper) for a job but upon meeting them realised that they would not be the right fit for this particular client. If I didn’t know my client as well as I did, I could have easily shortlisted this person and wasted everyone’s time. In this case I had another role that was ideal for this exceptional candidate and I also found the right person for my client and his team. A win, win all around!

Fix your mistakes Either through error or misunderstanding, when you make a mistake, fix it. Don’t argue with your customer, just do everything you can (to a point) to make things right. Happy clients are forever clients, right? Go the extra mile People love to be made feel special, so offer them a service that is above their expectations. Surprise them! When I worked for Royal Caribbean they advertised far and wide that we delivered the ‘WOW’ and boy did we deliver! Guests onboard were given a service that they would be hard pressed to find anywhere on land and to this day, one of the reasons they are the highest rated cruise line in the world for customer service is because guests leave going ‘Wow! What an amazing vacation’. Do the same in YOUR business. Deliver the WOW! Think long term – A customer is for life To me, my clients are gold but so are my candidates. Many of my candidates will one day become my clients, so I ensure that we offer them the best possible service from the beginning through understanding, empathy and clear communication. Not only is it professional to do so, but you have the opportunity to gain customers for life. How important is it to deliver an excellent service? If you want to stay in business long term, then it’s imperative and should be the driving force behind your business. Customer service has an impact on both existing and potential customers, in fact a recent survey found that 68% of customers would react by telling family and friends about a bad experience by posting it on a social network and as each Facebook profile has an average of 229 friends, the reach of this experience can very quickly reach thousands. However, there is great value in ensuring you deliver a premium service to your customers. Up to 86% of customers are willing to pay more for a better service and 73% of people have said that good customer service has made them fall in love with the brand.

THE POWER OF PR MARKETING & PR PLANNING DAN AE J O NE S

As we enter a new financial year it is highly recommended to take a relook at your Marketing & Public Relations Planning to ensure that by December you achieve your desired goals for the calendar year. A Marketing & PR Plan is only as good as the person crafting it, the people that follow it and those tasked with implementing it, so a number of factors need to be assessed when you take a look at how you’re tracking with your revenue targets. Da nae J o n es i s P ri nc ip a l o f PR & Ma rket i n g f i rm D a n a e J o n e s Cons ultin g e: danae@ d an aej o n e s .c o m .a u w : www. d an aej o n es. c o m .a u

OBJECTIVES: So what are your objectives for the year? Are you needing to change focus due to market demands?. By the way, it is absolutely fine if you need to – in fact I’d encourage it. Those businesses that don’t reassess based on the market conditions get left behind, so if your objectives need rejigging, then now’s the time to do it. STRATEGY: Your strategy is the “how” you are going to get there. We are now over six months into the year and it is at this time of year that we need to ask ourselves – is our current strategy working and serving the business needs? If your strategy does need tinkering, it is important to understand why at this point. Do you have increasing competition, is your industry struggling to keep its head above water at present, have you been doing the same as your competitors and is it time to stand out from the pack and dominate with your point of difference. Why is it that you feel you need to change strategy mid year? TARGET AUDIENCE: If you had your target audience right to begin with, then your target audience should only change mid-year if you are trying to cease on a new opportunity or new market segment. Now is the time to think about whether you need a multi-pronged attack to your targeting. And if you do, it is important to get the pitch right for each segment so you meet their needs and in turn capture those sales. COMPETITOR ANALYSIS: Now is the perfect time of year to take a look at the competition. What are they doing different to you? What are they doing the same as you? How can you stand out from the rest and develop your unique value proposition? Have some of your competitors closed their doors – and if so, does this present a new opportunity for you? Or do you have an increased level of competition? … and

CairnsLife 68 Magazine

if so, how are you planning to tackle this challenge? MARKET RESEARCH: Have you taken the time to research the current market trends and see what lies ahead? Let’s consider economically, socially and environmentally. How can the current market trends in these segments benefit or threaten your business? SET TARGETS & REVISE IF REQUIRED: Have you set clear targets of expected revenue generation? And if not, why not? It’s time to set clear and concise income targets from your Marketing and PR endeavours. SALES STAFF LITMUS TEST: Are your sales people or business development team up to the task? Too often I see businesses who have grown to love their sales people for personality, not performance. I have seen many examples locally where the sales people are absolutely lovely, but they couldn’t sell to save themselves. So my only word of advice in this arena is - be honest with yourself and stop making excuses for your underperforming business development team. If you haven’t set KPIs, do it, and make them realistic. Also have your team trained in how to sell effectively. They may just be lacking some key techniques required to close those deals. But either way, let your team know that you expect results. They are in sales to SELL – full stop. If you have sales people who aren’t bringing in the bacon then you have a fundamental problem that needs to be addressed. Even the best Marketing and PR plan doesn’t work if there aren’t skilled people able to deliver the outcomes. IMPLEMENTATION: Work out who is doing what and when, assign tasks and put this into a timeline format and prioritise the jobs to be done. Everything from events that need to be attended for networking opportunities, sales training to be conducted with the team, number of sales calls to be carried out for the month and percentage conversions expected. Along with mainstream media advertising, marketing and public relations activity to be conducted, all need to be drilled down. It’s the New Financial Year so let’s regain some focus on our Marketing & PR Plans and try and stick to them for the rest of the year to achieve some great outcomes!

As most readers would be aware, radical changes to Australian Citizenship are proposed by the Government and are being put before Parliament. Whilst some of these changes are quite sound, and many Australian Citizens would agree with them, there are fundamental issues in both the way the changes have been formulated, and in a lack of information explaining the workings of many of those changes. Indeed some are quite misleading and would not be understood by the majority of Australians. Let’s consider some of these changes, the pros and cons: • It is proposed to change the period of residence (currently on both temporary and permanent visas) to one requiring 4 years on permanent residence. Whilst no justification is given for this, and living here for 4 years is the same whether on temporary or permanent visas, it will impact people who have been living and integrating in Australia for many years on various forms of legitimate residency. Do we really want them excluded from Citizenship when they have settled in our community? • The English requirement – this is the most poorly understood new requirement. This will likely exclude possibly 30,000 persons who permanently live in Australia from Citizenship annually. The test is not understood. It sounds reasonable that applicants should have what is called “competent English”, however this is terminology used by the IELTS testing system. The reality is that the person has to pass 4 tests at the one time and if they fail anyone of those they have to repeat the entire test. Most importantly it is a standard that is set above the requirements for University Admission and is above a standard that: a. Many children born and raised in Australia, and fully educated here to level 12 (non matriculating), would not pass in the one sitting b. A huge number of our past generations of migrants living here as second and third generation “Australians” would not pass c. Many migrants eg parents, and those of a

non academic background, would never pass d. Many, many Australian Citizens new and old would not pass This could create a two class society of permanent residents. Wouldn’t it be better to have committed long term residents as Citizens? Why not just have the Citizenship test in English and use that to assess a reasonable standard of English? Even permanent residents who have already proven English would be re-tested under the intended plans. • Try three times and strike out! It is proposed that a person can only apply three times, if they fail the test or other requirements. A person could be in their twenties and fail three consecutive the tests, and then remain in Australia for the rest of their lives but not be able to apply for Citizenship, ever. Does this make sense? • Police and Security checks for all applicants for Citizenship does make sense in today’s world. • Integration future applicants for Citizenship will have to prove their integration into Australian society however there is no clear definitions, only vague guidelines, of what this may involve. The proposed legislation is imprecise and appears to be developed “on the run”. Clear guidelines and definitions are not available. These are just some of the changes. Australian Citizenship is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities and obligations. However, there is a danger that the proposed changes to the criteria for meeting the Australian citizenship test may be unattainable for many current permanent residents of Australia and should be re-examined. Another role I have is what is called an Independent Childrens lawyer (ICL). The job of the ICL is to present an independent view to the court as to what is in a child’s best interests, and one of the best things about the role is that you can talk to children who are involved. An ICL is only appointed once there are court proceedings and usually where there is high conflict between parents. So, it’s hardly surprising that what a lot of kids say is the one thing they want more than anything, is for Mum and Dad to stop fighting. It makes children feel incredibly sad when their parents fight. Even with the best intentions kids end up right in the middle of their parent’s conflict and often feel they have to choose. Mostly, kids don’t want to choose. They love both parents and they don’t want to upset either one. An adult would find it very hard to choose between two loved ones, so imagine how hard it is for a child. Conflict between parents puts an incredible burden on children and can result in poor performance at school, emotional issues, behavioural problems, often long lasting psychological trauma. Every parent will say they would never hurt their child, not realising that unresolved parental conflict does just that. I heard something very powerful in court the other day from Judge Willis, Federal Circuit Court Judge. She had two parents before her, who had been in high conflict for years. She told them that it “was time to lay down your weapons”. “Put up a white flag”, she said, “just be parents, and help your child through this.”

She also made the comment that it is hard enough to co -parent when you are together let alone when you are not. Any separated parent knows how true that is and how hard it can be when the conflict between you prevents you from talking to each other as parents. How can you move forward? This where family dispute resolution – mediation - can help. Even if there has already been an attempt at mediation (which in most cases has to happen before an application can be filed) – give it another go. It is never too late. Resolving conflict is like quitting smoking, as soon as it stops, the damage starts to heal! There are a number of excellent private mediators in Cairns who specialise in family law disputes; and there are great services such as Relationships Australia and the Queensland Legal Aid Conferencing program. Mediation gives you the chance to ‘lay down your weapons’, to find ways to put aside the conflict and focus on the way forward for your children. Not only can Mediation resolve disputes, it helps you come up with strategies to improve communication between you so you can get on with the job of being the very best parent you can be.

TAKE ACTION NOW ON FIRE PROTECTION G RAH A M K O C H

It seems lately that dwelling fires are in the news more and more, many with tragic loss of life. None more so than the dreadful unit block fire in the UK. Who would have thought a modern unit block could burn so furiously. Unfortunately we are always amazed at the devastation after a fire, but it is too late to think what could have been done to prevent the fire. Recently, my wife and I had the smoke alarms updated to the new photoelectric type in our home and rental properties because we had heard that from January 2017, new fire smoke alarm laws apply to domestic building owners. As of January 2017, any new dwelling or dwellings that are being substantially renovated must comply with the new regulations. This includes: • Only photoelectric smoke alarms are to be installed • Any smoke alarm over 10 years old must be replaced by a photoelectric alarm • Any replacement of an existing alarm must be with a photoelectric type.

Graham Ko ch i s M a n a g in g D ir e c to r of KIB G ro u p w i t h o v e r 4 0 y e a r s experi en ce i n t h e f in a n c ia l p la n n in g and in su ran ce i n d us tr y

The new laws did not require us to update the alarms just yet but photoelectric alarms are more advanced and are widely regarded as being superior to ionisation alarms in most circumstances. They respond faster than other alarms to most fire types and are less likely to cause false alarms. When it comes to fire safety, you can’t afford to be complacent and we just feel a whole lot better knowing that if there was ever a fire in any of our properties, we have done all we can to ensure the safety of all occupants. They are particularly effective at detecting smouldering fires, which provides the earliest possible warning of a small developing fire. If your smoke alarm has a radioactive warning symbol on it, it is an ionisation smoke alarm. From January 2022, all homes or units sold, leased or prior to a lease renewal must comply with the new regulations. The new regulations will require photoelectric smoke alarms to be hardwired to mains power with a backup power source or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery.

The smoke alarms to be installed: • In all bedrooms • In all hallways that connect bedrooms to rest of the dwelling • If there is no hallway, between bedroom and other parts of the storey • If more than one storey building at least one smoke alarm in each storey • If there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exist the building • All alarms must be interconnected with all other alarms for all to activate together. Whilst most alarms are attached to a ceiling, care must be taken in positioning them. Keep them away from light fittings, fans, air conditioning and corners of a room. Cathedral and exposed beam ceiling require special attention. For more information, for fitting smoke alarms discuss with a qualified technician and/or refer to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (https://www.qfes.qld. gov.au/community-safety/smokealarms/ Pages/sold-leased-properties.aspx) or Master Electricians Australia. DIVORCE SY BILL A F R A N C IS

In these modern days of travel and migration it is not uncommon for families to seek a new life abroad. A life which offers new opportunities and adventure. It is not surprising that there is an ever increasing flow of migration to Australia from the United Kingdom (the UK). It is after all a country which has maintained close links with Australia and we of course share the same language. Not surprisingly the stress of migration and setting up a new life proves too hard to bear for some families; separation occurs followed by the inevitable divorce. Often one of the parties will return to the UK. In such a situation there may be a possible choice as to jurisdiction; should the divorce be filed in the UK or here? It may be that proceedings have already been commenced in the UK by the returning spouse and a response by the remaining spouse is required.

Sybilla Francis Solicitor Phone: 4044 5000

Many would assume, and quite understandably, that the process and procedure is the same, or at least very similar. The UK is after all the mother country from which Australia has taken its law. The ground for divorce in both countries is the same; the only ground for divorce is that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Irretrievable breakdown has to be evidenced. That is where the similarity ends. In Australia irretrievable breakdown is evidenced by a period of separation of 12 months.

In the UK the irretrievable breakdown must be evidenced by one of five facts (often these are referred to as the grounds): 1. The respondent has committed adultery and the petitioner finds intolerable to live with the respondent. 2. The respondent has behaved in such a way that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent. 3. The respondent has deserted the petitioner for a period of two years. 4. The parties have lived separate and apart for a period of two years and they both consent to a divorce. 5. The parties have lived separate and apart for a period of five years (no consent is required). The first three facts indicate some fault or blame on the part of one party. Will this then affect division of property? What happens where there is property both in the UK and in Australia? What about the children? All of this appears at first instance to be a minefield and confusing. Our languages are the same but our law is not. However with over 50 years of combined legal experience encompassing law in the UK and Australia, we at Hadley Family Law are well versed in advising and assisting in relation to family law in both jurisdictions. We are proud also to maintain strong links with the legal profession in the UK enabling us to provide a complete and comprehensive service.

BETTER HEARING YOU CAN AFFORD

Research indicates that improving your hearing also improves your quality of life, as well as the quality of life of your family and those you interact with. “This makes perfect sense,” says Joanna Magee, director of the family Practice, AUDiOHEALTH.

JO AN NA M A G E E

“So often our clients are amazed by the improvement in their hearing and comment that they wish they had obtained assistance sooner. Many have neglected this sense for decades and found themselves withdrawing from interacting with others, particularly socially, and suddenly they have reclaimed their ability to communicate effectively again and enjoy the wonderful sounds of life.” Hearing is one of our most important senses yet it is so often taken for granted. The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes it as our most neglected sense. J oa nna i s an accredite d ‘E A R ’ with th e Royal Au st ral i a n C o lle g e o f G e neral P ract i t i o n er s (R A C GP) a n d i s involved i n ed u ca tio n a l s e m in a r s fo r D octors, Nu rses a n d A llie d H e a lth Profe ssio n al s.

Our ability to hear allows us to communicate and enjoy life, through music, sounds and conversation. “Don’t let hearing loss disrupt your lifestyle,” Joanna says. “It’s time to make the resolution to take charge of your hearing. Our experienced clinicians can conduct tests and help you take appropriate measures to protect your hearing, counsel on noise exposure, and provide ear protection and amplification to improve your hearing thresholds,” she says. By addressing your hearing you can get fully involved in life and start participating and contributing more to society. Not only are your relationships improved, but your life becomes more enjoyable, both physically and mentally. “Hearing is one of the most neglected senses. So few people seek hearing assistance when they need it,” she says.

Statistics have shown it can take up to seven years before people take any action with regard to hearing loss. “During this time their hearing declines further, along with cognitive abilities, patience and ability to learn new skills,” Joanna says. Hearing loss creeps up on you. People don’t notice it until something happens and often relationships are impacted because there’s a barrier to effective communication. “It can be very distressing to lose your hearing,” Joanna says, and we understand that. Our clinicians are caring and experienced and will be able to optimise your hearing making the process easy and hassle-free and very affordable. “No one needs to be putting up with this loss. There are so many people we can be helping but they just aren’t aware of the wonderful solutions available to assist.” The advances in hearing technology today are outstandingly smart, with hearing devices that are totally concealed to the naked eye. These days a hearing loss is more conspicuous than a hearing aid! “You can even use your iPhone for phone calls and as an external microphone streaming sound directly to your hearing devices, ” Joanna says, direct input of sound is very clear.” Whether you are in need of a hearing test, tinnitus advice and management or the latest hearing devices, you can rest assured that you are in sound hands with AUDiOHEALTH’s outstanding service and support. For an obligation free consultation and trial of the latest discreet hearing system call AUDiOHEALTH on 4041 7860 or visit the clinic at 125 Grafton Street, CAIRNS.

BEND IT LIKE…. PEYRONIE? Peyronie’s Disease is a curvature of the penis. It was first described by a Frenchman, Francois Gigot de la Peyronie who described it in 1743. It may occur after damage to the penis (usually a buckling injury) or may occur spontaneously. It is not really a “disease” in the true sense of the word. It is the formation of scar tissue within the penis which can sometimes affect a man’s ability to direct his urinary stream and may prevent a normal erection or may cause the erection to be bent. This may be in any direction and sometimes if severe may result in a “twist”. This can also result in shortening of the penis. As a result an erection may be painful and intercourse may cause pain for the man or his partner and sometimes is not possible at all. Because it is made up of “scar” tissue it may get better by itself but this may take a year to happen as the tissue “matures”. Unfortunately there are no specific medications which have a significant ability to promise a “cure”. There are many sites on the internet which offer promises which are usually unfulfilled. There do not appear to be any creams or specific mechanical straightening devices which offer a reliable, scientifically tested method of improvement despite the costs of these devices. Some vitamins have been recommended in the past but recent testing has failed to show significant benefit. Some injections of a substance in to the scar tissue is sometimes effective but this requires a number of

injections over many weeks and does not appear to be reliable and because of the discomfort associated with the treatment, the course is often not completed. So that leaves surgery. There are a number of operations whereby the penis can be straightened. There are various techniques. In some of them the scar tissue is removed and a “tissue graft” inserted but as healing takes place by the formation of scar tissue they may not always be effective. In other words, when a scar is removed the resulting healing is by another scar and that in itself can also cause narrowing of the penis. Another technique is to take a “tuck” in the side opposite the scarring rather like dress making so it is then straight. Occasionally, if the curvature is accompanied by an inability to get an erection, a penile prosthesis is necessary. This is an artificial erection device which is contained entirely in the body which can give an erection and straighten the penis at the same time. These procedures are usually carried out in day surgery so that the man does not have to stay in hospital.

WE LIVE IN A KYPHOTIC AGE! J AN I NE NO O P ETCH

We spend most of our time these days looking down at our smart phone, iPads, behind the steering wheel of our cars, sitting at our desks and lounging around watching TV and as a result most of us have terrible posture. Just take a look around the next time you are out and about or waiting in line at the supermarket, nobody has good posture these days and the most shocking is our teenage population. The digital age is not good for our posture. Pilates can help you reverse the effects of our Kyphotic lifestyles and you will see changes in your body in as little as 10-20 Pilates sessions. If you body is in good alignment there is less stress on the the spine and muscles. As soon as the body is unbalanced in any way some muscles become overworked and others become very weak, and in time we then suffer injuries and pain, with most people often complaining of pain in the lower back. With a good Pilates instructor you can correct your body alignment over time by strengthening and stretching certain muscle groups. Our everyday lifestyle attributes to our posture and body alignment, but we can learn new habits and exercises to combat our repetitive daily actions. We do want to maintain the natural curves of the spine as they act as shock absorbers, protecting the body during any impact, so if you are partaking in any high impact sport that involves jumping, running or carrying heavy loads then it is even more important for you to have a good body alignment, otherwise it is only a matter of time and you will suffer an injury. Pilates is the perfect cross training programme for you and all the high level sports athletes and teams incorporate Pilates into their training programme even your favourite footy teams.

It probably hasn’t crossed your mind about how your poor posture affects your internal organs Over time, if for example your shoulders have rounded and your head come forward and the pelvis tilting results in the rib cage being compressed. You are going to have less lung capacity and the digestive system will have constant pressure on it. Posture can affect these things although it is not often recognised by health professionals. The placement of the head relating to our posture can add extra pressure and weight for example if the head is in forward placement, the neck extensors will become tight and overworked and the flexors weak and inactive. The head weighs approximately 5 kilograms, so the further away from the base support posture the more stress and strain on the musculature. This can affect every aspect of our daily life, often resulting in pain. During your Pilates initial session, you Pilates Instructor will undertake a Posture & Gait Cycle Assessment. An initial plan of exercises with be put in place for your 1st 10 sessions. You will see and feel some changes over these 1st 10 sessions and from session 10-20 even more. Your friends and colleagues will say to you “You are looking taller”. You skin tone will improve, you will look fresher in the face and your flexibility and strength will also improve. Pilates also enhances the Mind and the Body. You can walk into the studio feeling tired, down, and walk out feeling uplifted and energised. Now is the time to combat your Kyphotic Lifestyle and set your posture straight. We would love to see you in our lovely studio to help you improve your posture and change your lives with Pilates. Call us Now to book your Initial Assessment.

DO I HAVE A PINCHED NERVE? SU Z AN N E RAT H BSc. (HONS) Physio MSc. Sport and Exercise Medicine. Craniosacral therapist.

Ah, the nervous system. Essentially our body’s computer, it consists of the brain, spinal cord and a massive interconnecting system of nerves ranging in size from as thick as a finger to as thin as a piece of thread. They travel beside, to and through muscles, veins and arteries, bones, ligaments, organs, tendons, fascia and skin. Their role is to carry signals to and from the brain, which then decides how to respond to these signals. A simple way of illustrating this: if you put your hand on something hot, a bunch of sensory nerves communicates this to the brain; the brain sends a message back to your motor nerves and your motor nerves stimulate your muscles to move your hand, ensuring you don’t get burnt. For the majority of people, this process functions normally, as it should. But sometimes, the nervous system decides to act like that annoying laptop with a keyboard which selectively turns itself on and off, even though technicians can find nothing wrong with it. In the case of some of the patients I treat, this means unusual pain patterns (“My head hurts and then I get a pain in my left ankle and it shoots to my big toe”), constant pain that seems out of proportion to findings on X-rays and MRIs, or weird and wonderful symptoms of a nervous system that’s ‘out of whack’including stress, anxiety, gut issues and more. A nerve that is pinched or compressed essentially has at least part of its connection to the brain, via the spinal cord, cut off. This means the signals just don’t get through- there is always a change in reflexes at that level and changes in either strength and/or sensation. Physiotherapy assessment is really important to determine whether this is the case; following this, specific joint mobilisations to release compression can often be really useful.

More often than not, clients with shooting pains or tingling down an arm or leg will describe it to me as a pinched nerve, often telling me about some changes in their spine which were picked up by imaging. And more often than not, what’s happening is that the nerve is simply overly sensitised. This can happen for lots of reasons- inflammation, imbalances and poor muscle control of joint movements, sickness, whiplash. The good news is it’s generally very manageable with education and correct treatment- physiotherapy is a vital part of this. Signs that your ‘pinched nerve’ is really just a nerve that’s inflamed or sensitised include: • Worse pain in the morning, or difficulty sleeping at night ( your nervous tissue likes to move!) • Your pain gets better with gentle activity • It may respond well to other medications, particularly some anti-depressants. • Your pain changes. It may be worse when your muscles fatigue, if you’re tired or stressed, or in certain positions. This is great news for physiotherapists- if your pain can be made worse, we believe we can also make it better! There’s lots more signs which a physiotherapist skilled in nerve tissue pain and chronic pain may pick up on assessment; just like we’re all different, so are our bodies and nervous systems! 365 Reasons Why Not

M C G R E G O R If you haven’t heard about 13 Reasons Why, you’ve probably been living under a rock. The popular Netflix series has opened the public conversation around suicide, drawing attention to the gritty subject of risk factors, including bullying, sexuality issues, and rape. BUT YOU CAN’T OPEN PANDORA’S BOX WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES.

While bringing such a taboo topic out into the open has been great for smashing stigma, what is liberating for some is a trigger for others. Schools and organizations working with at-risk young people report a spike in reemergent suicidal thinking since the show hit the screen. The show also portrays mental health services as ineffective in providing help to at-risk youth, effectively discouraging young people from seeking help. This is cause for concern. But a cautionary tale is not the answer. Controversy amplifies curiosity, and it tends to backfire. The Far North Queensland Suicide Prevention Taskforce took to social media to tackle the issue head-on, and #365ReasonsWhyNot was born. The 13 reasons presented for suicide as the ultimate act of revenge are countered by 365 reasons to keep on living, all suggested by young people in the Cairns and Hinterland region.

The reasons are simple and modest, achievable by most people, not aspirational goals that are out of reach. They range from simple, with “because I love spending time with my friends,” to inspirational, with “because life is a great adventure,” to feisty, with “because I want to kick depression’s butt.” The point is that life for most people isn’t about grand plans and great successes. It’s about getting through each day intact, hopefully with a smile on our faces. From June 1st, one social media meme will be released every day for a year, each presenting one reason to continue living, to not give up. Each meme is branded with the hashtag # 3 6 5 Re a s o n s W hy N o t , bears a link to the FNQ Suicide Prevention Taskforce Facebook page, and is accompanied by a link to a helpful service or resource so people can access support for themselves or a loved one. With #365ReasonsWhyNot, those 13 Reasons Why will pale in comparison. Kari McGregor is a counsellor and psychoeducation facilitator for the Dr Edward Koch Foundation. With a professional and educational background in psychology and education, she draws on strengths from both fields when assisting clients in building capacity and resilience. The Dr Edward Koch Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of people in Far North Queensland. The Foundation’s work focuses primarily on reducing the rate of suicide in the region through providing suicide prevention and intervention workshops and counselling support.

$20,000 FIRST HOME OWNERS’ CONSTRUCTION GRANT EXTENDED R O SLY N S M I T H

‘ Wom en i n Bu i l d i ng ’ Winner Q M BA 2016

Awa r d

The Queensland Govt announced recently that they are extending the $20,000 First Home Owners Construction Grant till 31st December this year which is great news for the building industry and first home owners. The grant is only available for first home seekers who are a building a new home up to a combined House and Land total of $750,000. We have some very well priced house and land packages for first home owners and in the Value Homes side of our business, as we specialise in this area. These packages are in Cairns suburbs and on the Tablelands and we can do them in most suburbs depending on the availability of land. For example, House and Land packages start from $299,000 at Gordonvale for 600m2 block of land with a rendered block home including 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, patio & single car space, floor coverings, fly screens, lights, fans, split system air cons to living & bedroom 1, concrete driveway and even include the clothes line & letter box! For not much more we have very affordable House and Land packages in the new Mount Peter Estate at Edmonton. The building industry in Cairns is starting to see some improvement so prices will start to rise soon. While you are doing

your homework on building prices make sure that you know exactly what you are getting for your money. As they say……. make sure you are looking at ‘apples for apples’ and that’s not an easy thing to do when you are starting out. Don’t be afraid to ask the builder questions about what’s included in your price, and also what’s not included as some things may be very important to you. If the builder is reluctant to put this in writing then find a builder who will. Consider what you are paying in rent now and compare these packages as this could be your chance to get into your own affordable brand new home. For more information on that $20,000 come in and talk to me or one of our Value Homes sales consultants at Smithfield Village or Sugarworld Display Homes as soon as possible and let’s get started. Check our website valuehomes.com.au for the locations of the display homes and also more info at https://firsthomeowners.initiatives.qld.gov.au .
