as two Paediatricians, Dr. Tim Warnock and Dr. Mohan Swaminathan, as well as our highly qualified midwives,” says Deanna. Mums now also have access to a specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapist, available during pregnancy and postnatally. Cairns Private Hospital is leading the way to innovative maternity care in Australia with the introduction of the Know Your Midwife program in August this year. The hospital’s Maternity Unit has created the new program that will allow expectant mothers to opt for a known Midwife and Obstetrician to follow them through their pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum period. “Mums will have continuity of care and build enduring relationships with their Midwives and chosen Obstetrician in a concept similar to shared care. It gives women the best of both of worlds,” says Deanna Ward Nurse Unit Manager who is facilitating the new program. The Australian College of Midwives was recently quoted in support of this concept. “Being cared for by, and able to build a trust and rapport with the same midwife during pregnancy, through labour and birth, and into the early weeks of mothering – has benefits for mothers, babies and society.” Cairns Private Hospital has seen significant increase in demand for access to midwifery care in private hospitals. The hospital has listened to the

region’s families and introduced this ground-breaking program to all mums, whether they have private health insurance or not, with payment plans available. “People are tending to choose the private health system when they start a family because of the availability of choices of caregivers, and the high quality service and infrastructure offered by private hospitals. The new state of the art Maternity Unit at Cairns Private Hospital leaves no luxury untouched. It has expanded its Newborn Respiratory Support Services in the Special Care Nursery, meaning mothers and babies can stay together when babies are unwell. Beautiful themed birthing suites: Reef, Sunset, Rainforest all include labouring pools, facilities for partners to stay with mums, dining on demand and an Australian first – a full Sensory Experience during labour including ambient sound, soothing light show and aromas for relaxation. “We now have five Obstetricians who can refer mums to the KYM program: Dr. Tom Wright, Dr. Natalie Kiesey-Calding, Dr. Elizabeth Jackson, Dr. Suvi Hyytinen and Dr. Phoebe Hong, as well

Samantha RETURNS TO OUR SCREENS WORDS BY JANIE BARTON

Local residents will soon see a familiar face on the television as Nine News rolls out its new regional bulletins in July. The new one-hour bulletins, which will be launched in 15 regional cities, will feature local stories, sport and weather reports together with the latest in national and international news coverage. Samantha Heathwood, who presented the local WIN News from 2004-2009, will be back presenting Cairns’ news. She’ll also be presenting six other regional bulletins.

"I love the region"

“Every local story will be pertinent to the people of their region,” she said. “Local reporters will be doing live crosses, so we’ll have live news breaking from those areas. It’s creating about 80 jobs and new opportunities for regional journalists. “While other news services are decreasing staff, this new rollout shows a huge investment in regional news and shows just how important regional news is.” Since Samantha was nine years old, she imagined being a television news reporter or news presenter. She used to perform mock news bulletins with a friend while growing up in Toowoomba before going on to study journalism at university. Her first job was with WIN Television in 2004 when all the North Queensland news came out of Rockhampton.

CairnsLife 8 Magazine

“I actually started off as a sports reader for Cairns,” the mother of two said. “I eventually became the news reader and did back-up weather for Cairns as well.” She stayed in Rockhampton for five years before being transferred to her hometown of Toowoomba, where she spent three years as a newsreader. She then moved to Sydney with Channel 9 and for the past two years has been reporting in Brisbane for Queensland-wide news. Now she is preparing for the launch of the regional bulletins, in which she’ll be presenting news in Far North Queensland, North Queensland, Mackay, Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Darling Downs and the Sunshine Coast. “I love the people that I get to meet,” she said. “I love community engagement, and being welcomed into people’s homes is a real privilege.” As a single mum of two, Samantha makes work-life balance a priority. “When I’m with the kids I give them 100 per cent,” she said. “When I have them I work fewer hours and on the days their dad has them I work more hours.” Samantha has been to Cairns many times and has enjoyed covering major events such as the Port Douglas Carnivale and Cairns Amateurs. “I love the region,” she said. “I’m looking forward to coming back again.”

JOHN ANDREJIC C a i r n s

Re g i o n a l

It’s a huge job, with the kind of responsibility that accompanies you home, often uninvited, to dinner and to bed. It takes a certain kind of person to manage that kind of commitment and stay buoyant, and smiling. He’s the Chief Executive Officer of Cairns Regional Council, and if you knew exactly what his role entails, you would marvel at the calm, relaxed demeanour I’m witnessing as we chat in his third floor office. John Andrejic is Cairns’ greatest fan. Growing up on the family farm in Freshwater with his three brothers, John recalls that Freshwater seemed a long way from Cairns in those days.

I was very lucky to be born here in Cairns. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

One of John’s most memorable childhood experiences was riding the very first escalator in Cairns, at Trinity Wharf. The only high rise buildings in the early Eighties were the Pacific Hotel and Aquarius, and Freshwater was cut off by floods every year.

C o u n c i l

Mum and dad left town when I was about 15 and I stayed here, boarding at St. Augustine’s. Although I studied Commerce at uni in Brisbane, all the time I was thinking, ‘Get me outa here’. I couldn’t wait to get back,” John laughs. An accountant by profession, John did six years at Price Waterhouse, then joined the Cairns Port Authority, which at that stage owned the airport and seaport. “I was there for ten years, then the airport got sold and I was sold along with it. I thoroughly enjoyed working at the privatised airport as Chief Financial Officer, but when the Council CFO position came up in August 2013, I’d been in the same environment for about 15 years, and It was time to move on. “Cairns Regional Council is an amazingly complex business. Most people have no idea exactly how much Council does or the huge extent of its assets. “Cairns is a very different town to when I grew up,” says John, as we recalled fun times on the slides at the old Waterworks in Lake Street on the current site of the old National Mutual Tower. So how does John exorcise the omnipresent work demon in his spare time? “I frequently walk from work to home in Kanimbla, cathartic exercise which helps clear my head; it’s about six kilometres. At the weekends, if Gail and I aren’t doing something together, I take myself fishing in the local creeks.”

While he does enjoy the adrenalin rush of scaling them, he’s not doing it for fun. Paul is one of the city’s most skillful aborists with more than 20 years’ experience. He established Branching Out Tree Specialist six years ago and soon became well known for providing a professional, friendly and affordable service for removal and maintenance of trees, palms, coconut trees and shrubs. His services also include tree/palm pruning, tree inspections, stump grinding, vegetation and plant management and consultancy and survey reports. He leads a team of six, has a range of equipment including trucks, chippers, stump grinders and a compact loader and provides arborist services to local government, businesses, hotels and private clients.

One of his first jobs in Cairns was working for the Queensland Government cleaning up after Cyclone Yasi. “We spent four weeks in Tully,” he said. “It was a real eye opener for me to see how much damage cyclones actually do to vegetation.” Paul and his team also provide a maintenance service for all trees and palms to keep them healthy and lasting for years. CYCLEVISION: CAPTURE THE MOMENT

Rob

ASKER

WORDS AND PHOTO BY JESSE SHORT

WORDS AND PHOTO BY JESSE SHORT

When savvy prospective home buyers scour the internet and targeted advertisements for pre-purchase property inspection services, it can take time to find the right one. The investment of resources and time needed to unearth the right business that has the industry knowledge, qualifications, integrity and professional ethos can be consuming. An example of a local service that is dedicated to these principles can be found in the independent business owners, Darren and Michelle Hillier. Heading into their third year operating in Cairns, Inspect My Home Cairns provides services to the Cairns and FNQ community, as well as prospective out-of-town buyers looking to make the tropical city their home base or investment. With Darren’s 30-year experience in the building industry, as well as his qualification to undertake timber pest inspections, Clients are provided with comprehensive reporting as part of thorough prepurchase inspections. Options are given to visit the property on site for the inspection, where Darren is able to break down every aspect of room-by-room assessment of defects, putting reports into context. This information provides clarity and forms the basis on which Clients use these facts when going through their decision-making process. Darren also advises home buyers to check licensing carefully. What also sets them apart from their competitors is their flexibility, Client guidance and a customer service focus that is transparent and second to none. Client privacy is also a cornerstone of their business ethic. “We work for our Clients”.

THE BUSINESS YOU CHOOSE TO DO YOUR PREPURCHASE INSPECTIONS HAS TO BE LICENSED FOR THE SERVICES THEY ARE OFFERING, INCLUDING A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING INSPECTOR’S LICENSE WHICH IS ADDITIONAL TO A BUILDER’S R E G I S T R AT I O N . ”

Everything is managed with the customer in mind, and building positive relationships with them means that they have the right access to information, tools and advice to navigate through all the jargon associated with inspecting their properties. Speaking about their success, Michelle says, “Without our Client’s continued patronage, we would not have a business. We are grateful for their support and trust they have placed in us. It is what has helped our business to grow.” Positive referrals and testimonials have helped widen their reach and adaptability which is reflective of their Client needs and they regularly assist Clients locally, nationally and internationally.

What leads to great innovation? It could be a chance meeting of creative minds, a key investment or commission that heightens the credibility and validity of a project. For Rob Asker, it began with a second unfortunate incident where he was side-swiped by a mini-van on a Trinity Beach roundabout. How this was to translate into the creation of ground-breaking product for cyclists was the first step in the development phase.

THE TROUBLE WITH MAKING SOMETHING FROM NOTHING IS YOU H AV E L I T T L E T O WORK FROM. EVERYTHING COMES FUELLED BY YOUR VISION A N D PA S S I O N , L I M I T E D O N LY B Y TECHNOLOGICAL C A P A B I L I T Y, ” R O B S AY S . This was the inspiration for the development of Cyclevision helmets which are designed for safety and protection of cyclists. Speaking about the helmet’s innovative look, Rob said: “This is the very first one in the world that has front and rear cameras in it.”

Cyclevision is leading the market for their radically advanced, patented design and was the winner of Best Pipeline Product Award at the 2016 Tropical North Queensland Innovation Awards. Their vision: to create a helmet with integrated forward and rear-facing HD cameras that can capture every moment of the ride. And for the rear camera to Wi-Fi vision straight to your smartphone screen; the intention being to cover the safety of cyclists from front to back. The support and enthusiasm the company has received has been phenomenal. Minister for Transport, Mark Bailey, has declared his interest in getting one for himself. Potential market buzz has also gone international, with Olympic athletes looking to try out his new brand. After attending a bicycle summit on ‘the future of retail’ Rob goes on to highlight the growing need for retailers to take advantage of technologies. His own future business plans and launching of his product will include direct orders straight from their website. Great innovation works through embracing a constant evolving of ideas. In this respect, Cyclevision is in the vanguard. They put everything into redefining and adapting to a changing market, and stand as a leading example of successful commercial enterprising which ultimately benefits the safety and protection of people and cycling enthusiasts alike.

Dev Rao’s Marinades Indian Restaurant is known for providing some of the best and most authentic Indian cuisine in Australia for the last 17 years, which is why locals, visiting businessmen and travellers love his popular restaurant. Owner Dev Rao and his late wife Meena opened Marinades in 1999, which became an immediate success. Since then, no other Indian restaurant in Cairns has been able to match his authentic quality and outstanding cuisine. It was the first restaurant in Cairns to cook in tandoori ovens using charcoal and the first to have Indian food cooked by qualified Indian chefs. Dev’s highly-skilled chefs, who were professionally trained in Mumbai and are known to cook with passion and love, make their own curry bases, yogurts and cheeses using time-honoured recipes. Marinades source all its meat, dairy and vegetables from local businesses while most of its delicious spices are imported from India. Its menu caters to all dietary requirements and includes glutton-free, vegan and nut-free dishes.

When the restaurant opened, Dev offered a lunch special of a selection of three vegetable curries, rice, yoghurt and dessert for $10 along with a $12 meat curry special. He has kept those same prices the same as a way of thanking his local supporters and also offers deluxe specials with six different types of curries for just $16.

One of the things Eco Civil Solutions’ (Qld) owner Phil Cassell loves the most about Cairns and the region is its green and pristine environment. “Whenever I’m away, I just long to be back here,” he said. “We are surrounded by green, and it’s only when you don’t see it that you realise how important it truly is.” As director of Eco Civil Solutions (Qld), Phil ensures his company specialises in environmentallysensitive civil earthworks construction, which is why his business’ approach to the environment is superior to current industry practices. “Our environmental policies and professional environmental engineers guarantee our civil works are in the

best interests of all,” said Phil, who has been in the earthworks industry since 1980. “In an area this vast, in an area this sensitive, one mistake can be catastrophic to the environment. The risks are very high, so it’s important to get it right every time. “There’s always going to be a battle between the environmentallyconscious people and the need for humanity to expand. If you can control the development in an environmentally-sensitive way everyone can be happy.” Eco Civil Solutions (Qld) initiates a comprehensive Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) before any work commences and has regular progress audits to ensure all works are fully Environment Protection Agency and CEMP compliance.

In a profession that is as slow in evolution as the platypus, The Law Office is light years ahead having boldly stepped into the new age of innovative law. The firm has been in existence for approximately 35 years. Founding partner, Anthony Lagois, has dedicated the majority of his legal career to building a highly respected and recognised law firm, which Ashlee Brain has recently joined as a partner.

Anthony has considerable experience in the areas of commercial and property law and Ashlee practices exclusively in the area of family law. Together, Anthony and Ashlee have recently expanded their team to include Michelle Krestyn, who practices in property and civil litigation, John Corsetti who concentrates on the areas of property law and estate matters and Lauren Barton who, once admitted, will focus on the areas of family law and civil litigation. Anthony is capably assisted by two conveyancing clerks, Robyn Croul and Lurline Froude, who are responsible for providing efficient and cost effective assistance to clients who are buying and selling their homes or other real estate. The Law Office has embraced the concept that “people don’t want to sit across the desk from someone they can’t relate to, who talks down to them, not with them. They want to put their trust in someone friendly but professional, someone who speaks their language and listens, who knows their stuff and gets the job done” says Ashlee. The Law Office is up with the times in meeting its client communication needs using Skype and Face Time, emails and text messages in recognition of the fact that everyone is busy. “We want our clients to be able to contact us easily and vice versa. You come to a lawyer for a solution to a problem. You don’t want some long, confusing response that doesn’t tell you what you need to be doing.

Special Counsel, MacDonnells Law

WORDS BY JANIE BARTO N P H OTO BY MINORI UEDA

MacDonnells Law Special Counsel Marlies Hobbs has a special affiliation with the city’s oldest law practice. The born-and-bred local, who was born 100 years after Ernest Milford established the Cairns’ legal practice in 1884, worked as a legal secretary at the practice in 2002 while studying for her law degree. She then completed her legal traineeship and took her first job as a solicitor with the firm in 2007. “I love the history of MacDonnells,” she said. “It has been a big part of Cairns for over 130 years.” After leaving the practice to specialise in planning, environment and government law, Marlies returned this year to the firm as a Special Counsel and continues to practice in planning, environment and government law, including litigation, strategic planning and advisory work.

“Being involved in the development and preservation of our most valuable resources, ie. land/ property, mineral resources and the environment, is a large part of local government law,” she said.

While her area of expertise is in local government, planning and environment law, she also has firsthand experience being a business owner, and brings a strong business acumen to her role as a lawyer. The mother of two young boys co-runs a pre-packaged healthy meals business with her husband Jai, who also runs his own finance business.

“I am excited to have rejoined MacDonnells Law even though I will continue to be involved in the growth of our two businesses,” she said. While MacDonnells Law is one of Queensland’s largest and longest established independent law firms with offices in Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, it’s the Cairns connection that interests Marlies the most. “I think it’s fascinating that Ernest Milford was 24 when he started the firm and was actually Cairns’ first solicitor,” she said. “Interestingly enough, one of his first clients was Cairns Regional Council, which in 1885 was known as the Municipal Council of the Borough of Cairns, and is still a valued client of MacDonnells Law today. “It’s an honour to work with a firm that’s so rich in knowledge and experience and that has most certainly stood the test of time.”

PUTTING FAMILIES FIRST

Senior Associate, MacDonnells Law

Like many southerners who holiday in Cairns, MacDonnells Law Senior Associate Catherine Ross made the decision to move to Cairns in 2004 after a visit here.

of the peer reviews you undertake, but also the advanced teachings you learn and in turn develop into wellinformed and practical advices for clients,” she said.

Catherine grew up in Sydney, where she attained her law degree, and came to Cairns with her dive-loving husband for a holiday. It wasn’t long after they returned from their vacation that they made the decision to move here.

Catherine’s experience includes all aspects of family law matters including property settlement on separation and children’s issues, and she is also experienced in mediation, assisting parties to negotiate resolutions as well as litigating.

“My husband loved Cairns and when we got back from our holiday we had the holiday blues,” she said. “It is such a beautiful place.”

“One of the best things about my job is that people share their lives with you, and they’re going through a period of change. It’s pretty special that I’m in a privileged situation where people share that with me, and I can help them on their journey to the next stage of their lives.”

After moving to the city 13 years ago Catherine joined MacDonnells Law as a young solicitor, and under the mentorship of Susan Thomson, became an Accredited Family Law Specialist in 2009. Catherine says this is one of her proudest achievements. “Gaining your accreditation is a career achievement not only because

Catherine also practises in collaborative law, Work and Heath Safety, inquests and domestic and family violence. She has completed Queensland Collaborative Law training, which sees trained

With divorce rating second after death on the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, it’s not hard to see why choosing the right family law practitioner is essential. Educated by School of the Air during an early childhood on Victoria Downs cattle station in the Northern Territory, Tamlyn Leahy of Williams Graham Carman attended boarding school in Brisbane for the last five years of high school. Torn between journalism and law, Tamlyn soon realised her skills lay in analysis rather than creativity, and Law chose Tamlyn. “I was an Articled Clerk in a small firm in Darwin. I loved the Articles system, and gained valuable experience in all areas of Law, particularly civil litigation. While in legal practice in Darwin, Tamlyn met her husband, a pearl diver set on joining the superyacht industry. He was successful in his attempts to lure Tamlyn into his dream, and she resigned, heading off to the Bahamas and the Caribbean for 18 months. “As Captain, he used to joke to passengers that his wife was a lawyer, but

she was cleaning the toilets downstairs,” Tamlyn laughs. After a further stint at sea, the couple returned to the Territory, where Tamlyn returned to law. “In between civil litigation cases, I did some family law, and found I loved it, dealing with real people and personal things, instead of big companies, helping people work through issues and getting a good result for them,” says Tamlyn. Following three years in a highly successful business venture – a motel in Roma, Western Queensland - they sold and moved to Cairns, along with their three children. “I was out of Law for a few years, but it was a good opportunity to focus on my choice of specialty, and I kept coming back to family law. “Eddy Lago, one of the most respected family law practitioners in Cairns is my boss, and a great mentor. I love the collegiality of this firm, we bandy ideas around and share experience and knowledge.

“I strive to settle out of court so long as it is in the client’s best interest. Court proceedings can be lengthy and emotionally draining, taking a toll on people’s physical and mental health. It’s expensive, protracted and can have lasting effects on the children,” says Tamlyn.

Making a will is one of the most important things you’ll ever do, so it pays to seek a specialist when preparing for the inevitable. “Estate planning is vital, and the golden rule is, don’t leave it until you need it,” says Jacqui Lee Long of Williams Graham Carman. Estate planning is having at the very least, an up-to-date will, enduring power of attorney and binding death benefit nomination. Born on the Atherton Tablelands, Jacqui grew up helping out on her parents’ cattle properties. She had her sights set on becoming a legal secretary and achieved that after leaving school. Jacqui gained valuable experience in diverse areas of law as a legal secretary on the Atherton Tablelands and Cairns, then a paralegal for many years whilst completing nearly seven years of part time study at James Cook University, before being admitted as a lawyer. Opportunity to specialise in an area of law that excited her at university came when a colleague retired, and Jacqui

put her hand up to take over the estate planning and administration portfolio. “Good estate planning can prevent unwelcome surprises. It is important to have an up-to-date will and in some instances, having an out-of-date will can be worse than not having a will at all,” says Jacqui. Wills are frequently overlooked in the excitement of significant life changes such as de facto relationships, marriage and the birth of a child with an old will naming siblings as beneficiaries. Twenty years on, a sole parent dies and the child is not accounted for in the will. The child could make a claim on the estate; a long, expensive and protracted process. In this situation, having no will would have benefited the child under the intestacy laws. “I enjoy working with my clients, helping them understand their sometimes complex estates and family dynamics, and who could make a claim on their estate by personalising an estate plan to suit their individual needs.”

“It is important to make people aware of the factors that can impact on their estate. Being proactive is cheaper than being reactive. Proper estate planning will cost much less than a trip to court. The key is reviewing your documents regularly to ensure they reflect your current wishes. If they don’t, do something about it before it is too late.”

“Estate planning and estate administration can incorporate many areas of law so being able to identify issues is paramount and having the backup specialist knowledge of the WGC team to support my client is a great bonus,” says Jacqui.

The ageing disgracefully trio have a barrage of fresh targets in sight, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme, treatment of refugees, and themselves. Known for their wildly offensive dark humour, a few simple questions answered by the ever-delightful Tim sets the tone for what audiences can expect when the group returns to Cairns. We recommend you sit yourself down with a nice hot cup of humour before proceeding with this next bit; DAAS is not for the easily-offended... Q&A with Tim Ferguson 1. You played to a sold out crowd back in 2015 at the Tanks Arts Centre. How was it playing inside an old disused WWII Navy fuel tank? Really?! We thought it was a brewery vat. No wonder the walls taste leaded. Either way, it’s our favourite Australian venue. Cosy, roomy and highly flammable. 2. Are you looking forward to a return to the tropics? Yes we are. We love taking reckless risks. The thought of sticking our heads in the jaws of the wild locals fills us with jolts of exquisite horror. 3. Is there anything usual/different to the Cairns crowd compared to other regional towns? You have no fear of dangerous creatures but a terror of mild embarrassment. You punch each other for leisure and business. You have all slept with each other (once). The only people like Cairnsians are in prison, in induced comas, in Adelaide. 4. Your new show is shaping up as another delightfully crude and confronting hit; what can fans expect? New songs, new steps. Sex & violence (in that order, then reversed). Hypnotism, extreme conservative values, goose-step marching, the Australian National Anthem. The controversial ‘Whistle Song’. And T-shirts that say ‘If You Don’t Like It, Move To Gordonvale’. All the things you like. 5. How is everyone’s physical and mental state heading in to another National tour? Our physical state is tiptop. Only a month ago, we watched our jet-pilot do a push‐up. It was exhausting, but we believe in mind-over‐matter. And our mental state is at double‐tiptop maximum efficiency plus extra kapow awareness. Also, muffins, please. …What was the question? Don’t miss the Doug Anthony Allstars: Near Death Experience, when they return to the Tanks Arts Centre on 30 June and 1 July. SETTING WORLDCLASS STANDARDS CAIRN S AQU ARIUM WORDS BY JANIE BARTON

What also makes the Aquarium different to any other is while each exhibit is expertly designed internally to simulate the natural environment as authentically as possible, the exterior of the tanks have also been themed to provide a more immersive experience for guests.

The Cairns Aquarium will be making history and setting industry benchmarks at the same time when it opens in August. As the first Australian aquarium built in 17 years, the three-level 7500sq m facility will feature the country’s newest and latest technology and equipment including its 300,000 litres Deep Reef habitat exhibit, which will be the only one of its kind in Australia and one of only three in the world. It’s also the only aquarium in the world that exclusively showcases the habitats and eco systems of the only two adjoining World Heritage listed protected areas – the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics. “Almost every capital city in Australia boasts a public aquarium as do most large cities in the world, yet there are very few locations where you could develop a world-class aquarium that only features the species that are local to that area,” said Chief Executive Officer and cofounder Daniel Leipnik. “Here in Cairns we are spoilt by the incredible biodiversity found in the Wet Tropics and the Great Barrier Reef, and creating a unique visitor experience based on interacting with the creatures from these environments is incredibly satisfying.”

The Aquarium will be home to 15,000 animals, fish, plants and other organisms that will be housed in a two-level Wet Tropics narrative journey that will take visitors through all the habitats of the Wet Tropics including the Great Barrier Reef, rainforest, rivers and streams, and mangroves. “Visitors will be able to get up close with many of the region’s rare, unusual, oddly coloured and in some cases even deadly creatures,” said Senior Curator Ramon Barbosa, who was the Assistant Director of Singapore’s SEA Aquarium, which is one of the largest aquariums in the world. “Ten North Queensland ecosystems and 71 habitats have been meticulously researched and replicated throughout the aquarium to ensure that visitors will enjoy an immersive journey where they are guaranteed to see and interact with some of the some of the rarest and most elusive animals on earth.”

CairnsLife 34 Magazine

“When visitors are walking through the river system zone, they’re walking through trees and rocks and those types of things,” Mr Barbos said. “When they’re walking through the rainforest section, there are rainforest trees over the top and waterfalls coming down through the rocks. “It’s interactive and immersive, so it gives the perspective that you’re actually in the rainforest or out in the reef.” The Cairns Aquarium’s research arm will also conduct vital research and development in species preservation and re-population, aquaculture reproductive bio-technology development, and collaborations with industry partners to explore renewable clean energy technologies in marine, tropical and equatorial environments. “The research and development side of things will be a significant portion as we move forward,” Mr Leipnik said. The $50 million project is the vision of Mr Leipnik and co-director Andrew Preston.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE MANY KINDS C A I RNS A Q UAR I UM

As visitors walk through two floors of themed exhibits at the Cairns Aquarium, they will get up close and personal with some of the rarest animals on earth. The facility will hold a collection of 15,000 animals, fish, plants and other organisms endemic to the Far North and displayed in 71 living exhibits. These exhibits will appear in zones replicating the habitats found from reef to rainforest. One of the most impressive planned attractions will be the 300,000 litre Deep Reef exhibit, which is the first of its kind in Australia and only one of three in the world. “This 10-metre high by 8.5-metre-wide exhibit replicates the reef drop-off, providing visitors with a view of this incredibly beautiful ecosystem and the diversity of marine creatures that call it home,” said Cairns Aquarium General Manager Julie Cullen. “It’s a view that would normally only be seen by highly experienced scuba divers far offshore.”

WORDS BY JANIE BARTON

Also among the Great Barrier Reef displays is a 1.8 millionlitre Oceanarium exhibit, which will be home to a school of scalloped hammerhead sharks and other large ocean predators. This can be seen through a 20-metre 270-degree underwater viewing tunnel and a 360-degree fivemetre-deep viewing room.

It’s a view that would normally only be seen by highly experienced scuba divers far offshore.”

Mid-size reef fish will move throughout the exhibit while nocturnal, deep-foraging fish will inhabit the lower levels. Visitors will also get a unique view of the stratified coral outcrops that range from the sunlight bathed shallows to the darker, lower depths of the drop-off.

CairnsLife 35 Magazine

“A 400,000 litre River Monsters exhibit will house the Gulf Savannah’s highly endangered freshwater sawfish and other weird giant freshwater creatures,” Ms Cullen said. “The Tropical Rainforest zone will feature some of the most incredible snakes, lizards, and frogs ever seen along with spiders and insects that are some of the biggest and meanest rainforest giants alive.” A Life in the Mangroves exhibit hosts a world of unique creatures with important biological functions including fish that live out of water, fighting crabs, baby crocodiles, sharks and rays. Dangers of the Reef features the species of marine life that can be potentially fatal to humans such as stone fish, sea snakes, lionfish, jelly fish and a host of venomous or poisonous creatures. Specially designed Touch and Talk exhibits will offer visitors of all ages the ability to touch and, in some cases, hold completely safe creatures such as blue sea stars, sea cucumbers, insects and lizards while under the supervision of a trained aquarist. The Aquarium will also be home to Aqualuna, a 220-seat contemporary Italian restaurant which also provides its own window to the world of rainforest and reef with a 70,000 litre Under the Pier themed shark exhibit inside the restaurant and an outdoor rainforest themed Daintree Deck. Visitors are also able to enjoy Back of House Tours which allow them to see how the aquarium works and a Behind the Scenes Tour of the aquarium’s operations. There are also VIP tours and for the more adventurous Shark Sleepovers where visitors can spend the night in the Oceanarium with a 360-degree panoramic vision of the predators of the Coral Sea. While co-founders Daniel Leipnik and Andrew Preston are thrilled to be able to bring this world-class aquarium to Cairns, they’re also excited about the effect visiting the facility will have on its guests. “We also want people to go through this experience and come out caring a lot more about nature and the living planet,” Mr Leipnik said. “We’d hope people will consider their impact on the planet to help these creatures.”

WE BREED ‘EM TOUGH DOWN UNDER WORDS BY MANDY MAGRO

With nerves of steel and an iron will, fearless Queenslander, Budd Williamson, lives for the adrenaline rush of putting his life on the line every time he climbs aboard a one tonne beast determined to get him the hell off it’s back. And that’s just what he’s going to do July 8th at the Cairns Convention Centre when PBR Australia brings the bull riders back to town – making the eight seconds his ultimate goal. “My father rode bulls, and my family has been involved in rodeos forever. As a kid, I grabbed every chance I could to climb on something and pretend I was a bull rider – a bucket, dogs, the barrel set up on the farm. I grew up on the land and wore a cowboy hat to school – it’s who I am and comes as second nature. Bull riding is what I live for.’

Now he’s the real deal, and has been involved in the PBR for ten years, in Australia, Mexico, Canada and the U.S. In this bone-crushing sport, Budd knows equally what it’s like to be bucked-off as well as the thrill of making the eight seconds that can pass by like a ticking time bomb. Like his fellow bull riders, he brings a whole new meaning to guts and glory. “You learn to play the cards you’ve been dealt,” he says. Enduring extensive injuries to almost every part of his body, which include 11 broken ribs, 2 punctured lungs, shoulder, jaw and face injuries which required reconstructions, a broken collarbone, and more cuts bruises and sprains then he can count, it just proves without a doubt that nothing will stop this determined bull rider. Budd says in response to being injured. “It’s just all part of it and comes with the territory. Bull riders don’t

know fear. We can’t. Mental toughness means everything. Injuries just add fuel to the fire and make you even more determined to get better and get back out there, riding bulls.” Unlike other sports, there’s no room for error in the arena. ‘I have the highest respect for footballers, but being knocked over in a footy field is nothing compared to being stomped on by a bull if you’re bucked off and unlucky enough to get in the way.’ When asked his favourite saying, he unwaveringly replies, “Nobody remembers the guy that comes in second.” And it rings so true when in the presence of this commanding man. Losing is just not an option for him. A gutsy, driven, fearless bloke, and also very down-toearth, Budd gives the sport everything he’s got, and packs a punch with his performance every single time.

SPACE WORDS BY SUZIE GRINTER

A successful business isn’t just born, it’s an evolving process that has requires hard work, but even more so, passion, tenacity, resilience and decision making, the latter far easier to make with support. “I had my own business, which I operated from home. I talked to my staff on Skype, but it was lonely. Ironically, lots of people dropped in, expecting me to be available, interrupting my thought processes and diverting me from the day’s goals. “I had to motivate myself, and my team, and as the boss, I had to make decisions in isolation; there was no one to bounce ideas off,” says Troy Haines, cofounder of theSPACE with Damian Zammit. It was this experience and a synchronistic collaboration with Troy, that saw the evolution of theSPACE, an environment to support business entrepreneurs “turning ideas into a commercial reality”.

KMPG Demographer, Bernard Salt said recently, “The growth in Cairns is underpinned by an entrepreneurial energy as baby boomers look to reinvent themselves and young start-ups pursue their business venture in a town known for its laidback lifestyle.” “At theSPACE, you’re constantly sharing ideas; collisions happen that reveal beneficial synchronicities. We’ve seen so many people building their business in our co-working spaces purely through the connections and referrals and relationships they create here. “It’s all about collaboration, sharing skills, knowledge, experience, contacts. Damian tells me theSPACE works collaboratively with TAFE on a number of programs. “One of our school based programs – an entrepreneurship plug-in called Emerging Entrepreneurs won the Education Innovation Award at the 2016 Regional Achievement & Community Awards, and was recognised by Westpac as a “Top 200 Businesses of Tomorrow. “The students can come in and learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship: where do you find good ideas? How do you test to see whether your idea is any good? And, if it is good, what do you do with it?” says Damian. “We’re approaching an era of hyperchange, where a supposedly reliable employment position might not be there in five years’ time. So, we’re teaching children about resilience, resourcefulness, seeing problems as opportunities, creativity, collaboration, all really important skills, directly transferable into jobs and so on,” says Troy.

Travis Bain of Sapphire Pictures (Acclaimed Producer/writer/ Director) said “New Players continue to settle here from other parts of Australia and around the World, drawn by the great Lifestyle, warm climate, and work opportunities. Everyone brings their own unique skills to the table, but we’re also becoming more multi skilled, so we can fill whatever production roles are vacant.” “Everyone Collaborates and everyone realizes that we’re not in this for the Money (of which there isn’t any) we are in it to produce fresh, exciting work and hammer on the doors of HOLLYWOOD together. It’s only a matter of time before we have a 100% locally originated film shot here in CAIRNS that stars A-List Actors and captures the attention of the entire world. Peter Jackson started out as a no budget Film Maker in Wellington NZ, making Films with his friends on weekends, and went on to make The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong in the very same place.” Anthony Ring of Ring Of Fire Productions (Acclaimed Actor/director/ Producer/Writer/Teacher) said “ in 2017 with the support of the Cairns Regional Council, Kris Lupinski and I created a Film Making Course over the School Holidays that taught the art of Story-Telling and Film Making with a view to help young Film Makers understand the value in good Story Telling.” Kriss Lupinski / Nick De Gabrielle of Element Media Productions (Producers/ Writers/Directors/Camera Crew) said “We believe that CAIRNS could very well be the next Melbourne when it comes to Filmmaking, but what we need is additional funding and investment into this field from both Local and State Government.” These are exciting times ahead for Cairns and our Film Industry, if we have the support of the Community, Council and Governments to support our Creative Independent Film

Industry and the ARTS and also develop a growth plan for the Industry, we could see Cairns Catapulted into the World Arena. To be able to educate, train and develop ourselves and the next generations which could create another great source of Sustainability for our beloved Cairns Region. How fantastic would it be to have our own Film Studio’s right here in CAIRNS, Let the world come to us, and us to the World. WILL YOUR RESUME HIT THE YES PILE?

EVA GR A BNE R Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88

Imagine this, it’s late at night and a HR Manager or Recruiter has 120 resumes to get through and a shortlist of no more than ten to compile for interviews. Now think of the resume that you are going to send, keeping in mind that recruiters spend an average of seven (yes, seven!) seconds scanning a resume. How can you be sure that your resume hits the ‘Yes’ pile? Market conditions are tough right now and you are competing against hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of other applicants. Don’t just email your resume off and ‘hope for the best’. If you are serious about finding the right job then your resume must reflect that. Nowadays it is important that you present a results-focused resume. It should be easy to read and your prospective employer should find it easy to extract the relevant information. It should be no more than 2-3 pages long. Remember, the purpose of your resume is not to get you the job; it is to get you an interview, so make it snappy and punchy! The interview is your opportunity to go into detail with your prospective employer, not your resume. Try to use bullet points where applicable and keep the statements short and to the point. List your ‘achievements’ under each job to highlight what contribution you brought to your previous employer. Most resume readers are short on time and on patience and will sooner reject your application rather than calling you for answers. Here are some of the most common mistakes found on applications – • Resume is either too long or too short. • Too ‘fluffy’ – ‘dedicated’, ‘conscientious’ or ‘good communicator’ is all well and good but you will be expected to substantiate your claims with skills and competencies to match. • No value-add- if your resume does not stand out, it will end up in the ‘maybe’ pile and guaranteed you will never receive a call. It must scream out to the reader and offer what the others don’t. • No focus – listing everything will cloud

a resume, concentrate on what is relevant to the job or industry you are applying for. • Grammar mistakes and typos – this is nearly a guarantee your resume will end up in the bin! • Visually unappealing – try to avoid the online templates. A basic font and clear outline is all that’s needed. • These days it is not necessary to put your picture on your resume. If you do, ensure that it is a ‘professional’ image. Remember also that a “one-size fits all” approach to your resume won’t cut it in a marketplace of increasingly specialized needs. o, plan on having several versions of your resume adjusted for the different jobs you are applying for. Finally, the biggest mistake people make when applying for jobs is not reading the job advert thoroughly. Review your resume and adjust it to contain the “key words” that employers and recruiters will be searching for. If you follow these guidelines, your resume will demonstrate your commitment to both the job and the company you are applying to, this will guarantee you will end up in the ‘Yes’ pile! Good luck! THE POWER OF PR CONTENT MARKETING DANA E J O NE S

I have always said one good published editorial about your business or the work you do is worth more than ten published adverts. Why do I and all other public relations professionals think this? Because it’s not directly selling, it’s informative, it’s unintrusive on people’s psyche and it’s seen to be credible. People have become so desensitised by the avalanche of advertising in the market these days, that people are craving information, not sell. If you can adequately inform and educate your public about your products or services, you are far more likely to build a stronger long term relationship with your consumer base. Now I’m not saying don’t advertise, as advertising is still an essential part of any marketing mix. But what I am saying is have a think about how you can integrate some editorial into your marketing mix.

You might hear a lot of talk about Content Marketing, so what is Content Marketing really I hear many business owners and managers ask? Put simply, Content Marketing is just one form of marketing you need to consider when structuring your marketing activity. It is focused on creating, publishing and distributing content for a targeted audience online. The aim of Content Marketing is to convert prospects into paying customers by creating and sharing highly valuable, free content. So not dissimilar to media publishing editorial about you. The difference is Content Marketing is editorial you create yourself about your business, products and services.

The content needs to be relevant to your business or area of expertise so you position yourself with your audience as an expert in this field and when customers think of this topic in future, your name or business name will be top of mind. The main purpose of Content Marketing is to help your business create true brand loyalty and provide valuable information to impress consumers, as well as let them be willing to purchase the products in the future. This form of marketing encourages the audience to make the purchase from your company when and where they are ready. So what are some places where you can publish your content? • Your Website • Your Social Media Channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc) • YouTube, Vimeo etc • Third Party Online Forums/ Communities • Your Blog • eBooks • Don’t forget that you can be a guest contributor on your strategic partners/alliance partners blogs, social media or websites too. I often share my clients content through my online channels to give them extra leverage. So have a think about how you can leverage your relationships/ partnerships with suppliers. Content Marketing is a very powerful, low cost way to market your business. I encourage you to give it a try!

THIS MONTH’S TOPIC IS BULLYING IN THE WORKPLACE. N AR D I NE CO L L I ER

The workplace has greatly changed since I started work at age 16. What was tolerated or considered “just good fun” might now get you into some trouble! Bullying and discrimination in the workplace is now almost ‘zero tolerance’ and Employers need to know what it is, what it isn’t, and take steps to deal with allegations properly if made in their workplace. So what is bullying? The Fair Work website defines it as follows. “A worker is bullied at work if: a person or group of people repeatedly act unreasonably towards them or a group of workers, and the behaviour creates a risk to health and safety. Examples of bullying include: • behaving aggressively • teasing or practical jokes • pressuring someone to behave inappropriately • excluding someone from workrelated events or • unreasonable work demands; • Management action that isn’t carried out in a reasonable way.

What isn’t bullying A manager can make decisions about poor performance, take disciplinary action, and direct and control the way work is carried out. Reasonable management action that’s carried out in a reasonable way is not bullying.” You can see that there might be a difference of opinion about what is unreasonable behaviour, for example when does teasing in the spirit of good fun cross the line and become unreasonable? How does a manager address poor performance without being accused of being a bully?

Regardless of personal opinion, employers have an obligation to ensure they properly address allegations of bullying. Left unchecked, conflict like this in the workplace causes serious damage to the workplace environment. The first step employers should take to address bullying in the workplace is to have good policies and procedures in place that everyone knows about and understands. For example, what behaviour does the workplace condone and what is considered inappropriate; how does a worker report an allegation of bullying and how will it be investigated? Most importantly, a workplace must deal with any allegations of inappropriate bullying behaviour without delay and before it escalates into a major dispute. I suggest, the best way to do this is to have an independent person with the proper training, assess the situation and if appropriate to do so, mediate the dispute. This ensures confidentiality, and impartiality. A properly conducted mediation can resolve the issue without great expense and improve the working environment. Collier Lawyers incorporates Workplace Legal Solutions, specialising in mediation of workplace disputes; but also drafting of policies and procedures and workplace investigations. When the power goes out - is my business covered? During September 2016, two severe storm fronts swept across South Australia in what could be described as one of the most extreme weather systems to hit in 50 years. While the entire state was without power for several hours, many businesses were without power for several days, resulting in a significant loss of turnover. Is this type of loss covered by business insurance? Short answer is, it depends on the type of policy you have. Firstly, for any claim to be paid as a result of loss of turnover, the business must have business interruption insurance. Unfortunately, many Australian businesses operate without business interruption insurance. Business Interruption insurance covers the shortfall in gross profits caused by the interruption to the business from any insured events. It also helps pay ongoing costs and protects profit margins until the business is back on its feet and at the same profit level before the interruption. Secondly, although a business may have this cover in place, in some instances, some policies might exclude claims made if the utility (electricity, gas, water supply systems, or land based telecommunications) is not immediately adjacent to the insured premises.

Thirdly, even when your insurance does cover you for utilities not adjacent to the insured premises, there is generally an excess period of 48 hours. This means an outage such as the one in South Australia would only be covered if a business was without power for more than 48 hours. For example some of the businesses who were without power for seven days, would only be able to claim for five days loss of gross profits. To find out more or precisely what cover your business has in place for power outages, contact us to discuss in more detail.

ENDING A RELATIONSHIP ETIQUETTE SU Z AN N E H A D L EY

In my practice over the years I have seen many lovely people heartbroken by the harsh manner of their relationship breakdown. Some hurt so much by the callous way of being made an ‘ex’, that they suffer nervous breakdowns. The pain and hurt makes finalising property division and parenting issues that much more difficult. This can often prevent sensible practical decisions being made and legal fees can be much higher than necessary as a result. Saying goodbye to a relationship gracefully is not something that comes easily. The breakdown of a relationship can be painful and heartbreaking. Being graceful in a time of hurt, change and often bewilderment is not what springs to mind. Too often hurting the other party is the response. The ‘please don’t list’ is much longer than the ‘please do’ list when it comes to breaking up. Painful breakups, with harsh words, spiteful actions such as destruction of treasured mementoes, seeking out support for the wrongs done can cause wounds that take many years to heal A softer approach to a relationship breakdown can have more benefits than you anticipate. Good etiquette on a relationship breakdown can serve everyone’s best interests but mostly yours. A graceful exit will enable you to carry less baggage into your next relationship When you know its over, don’t stay longer than you have to. Some folk do this because they believe it will avoid the pain of a short sharp break. Most folk do not want to hurt the other partner, they just dont want to be there any longer. Here’s the problem with that approach - your partner’s instincts will tell them you have withdrawn from the relationship and that increases not lessens their distress. No favours are being done to either of you by such an approach. Don’t end the relationship with yelling matches, insults, name calling or spiteful

actions. Most of all, don’t end it with a text message, no matter how short the relationship. There are times when external events, funerals, birthdays, Christmas in particular, bring other aspects of our lives into sharp focus and the end of the relationship is inevitable. There are no good times to break up but please, choose the ‘least worse’ time and place to say goodbye. Yelling at your partner ‘you’re dropped’ at a social gathering with friends and family around, only serves to humiliate your partner publicly, causing wounds that may never heal for them and frankly, makes you look like a prize jerk. For a long time. When it comes to saying goodbye, be gentle, be face to face and be private. Immediately after your relationship breakdown dont rush into another relationship as a way of healing the pain of parting. It may seem harmless on the surface, a simple dinner date with another soon afterwards but you are not doing yourself any favours. Being distracted in this way prevents you from going through the natural mourning that follows the loss of part of your life with the other partner. Give yourself permission to grieve and learn from the loss Focus on the positive things of the relationship when saying goodbye. Understand your soon to be ex-partner will be hurting too. When you are having ‘that talk we have to have’ point out to your partner their positive aspects, share what you liked best about them and what worked about the relationship. It wont lessen the pain but it will give them and you the dignity to part as adults. My final tip? Get legal advice from a family lawyer on your options, explore those options and most of all the options that don’t involve litigation.

BETTER HEARING YOU CAN AFFORD

According to a study by Access Economics, hearing loss costs the Australia economy 11.5 billion dollars annually. In addition, people with hearing impairment can earn significantly less than their counterparts with normal hearing. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. It doest not take into consideration the medical, social, personal, family or community impact.

JOANNA MAGEE

However, there is assistance available. The government has a Commonwealth Hearing Services Program run by the Office of Hearing Services (OHS), which enables eligible pensioners and veterans to obtain fully subsidised hearing devices and rehabilitation.

J oann a i s an accr e d ite d ‘E A R ’ with the R o yal Au st ra lia n C o lle g e o f Ge neral P ract i t i o ne r s (R A C GP ) a n d is invo l ved i n ed u c a tio n a l s e m in a r s for doct o rs, n u rses a n d a llie d h e a lth pr ofe ssi o n al s.

There is also an option to upgrade to better technology by making a personal contribution or using private health insurance as a no-gap top-up. AUDiOHEALTH is an accredited provider with this department and, having immediate access to the government portal, will be able to assist with any inquiries, services or assistance required, as director Joanna Magee explains. “At our family-owned practice AUDiOHEALTH we have access to any hearing device on the OHS approved list and we select discreet devices with the latest technology for our OHS clients,” she says. “Being an independent provider gives our clients more choice.” Joanna says more education and awareness on what is available is essential. “People come to us with devices over fiveyears-old with thick, old-fashioned tubing and large cumbersome ear molds,” she says. “Often these have not had a professional clean or in-house service for years. Many people are unaware that they can access new products every five years or should their hearing needs change. “They don’t know that these days the majority of the hearing devices fitted are stylish with thin tubing, not much thicker than a strand of hair. These are both comfortable and discreet.”

LIFE Medical While private clients have access to any product available on the Australian market, they are largely required to fund these themselves. However, there is help available. “We keep our prices very affordable. Often several thousand dollars less per set compared to our southern competitors,” Joanna says. “Private health funds offer rebates and as hearing aids are medical devices, you may be able to make a claim for an income tax rebate. AUDiOHEALTH is focused on its clients and makes it easy for them by offering interest-free repayment plans, enabling people to pay a deposit and spread the balance over 12 equal instalments. “It’s easier to budget this way and enables more people to benefit from hearing better and enjoying the benefits immediately,” Joanna says. The family-owned practice also encourages people to donate their old hearing devices to a foundation, so that they can be fitted to underprivileged children. “If you trade-in your existing hearing aids we will place a monetary value on them and deduct this from the purchase price of a new set,” Joanna says. “The old hearing aids will go to the Starkey Hearing Foundation and help a child who otherwise would have no hearing assistance to hear again and engage in life. “We will even take products that aren’t working, as the parts can be used.” With the release of new products and a microprocessor that is enhancing speech and music, reducing background noise and is hidden from view, as well as the recent studies confirming that the use of amplification strengthens neural pathways and helps restore the cognitive decline associated with hearing loss – now is the time to take some action. WORDS BY SUZIE GRINTER

One in 23 Australians will develop bowel cancer during their lifetime, that’s the bottom line. Australia has one of the highest bowel cancer rates in the world. The good news is, although it is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer, it is preventable, with a 90% success rate if detected and treated in its early stages. Dr Bernard Chin, specialist gastroenterologist at Cairns Private Hospital, says sadly though, the prevention message just doesn’t seem to be getting through. With such confronting statistics readily available you have to wonder why anyone would put themselves at risk, when it’s so easy to prevent.

In recognition of the fact that this is indeed a preventable cancer, over the last ten years the Federal Government has been rolling out the National Bowel Screening program, yet a huge percentage of people are not taking advantage of this free, and very easy screening initiative undertaken in the privacy of home. In about three years, everyone over the age of 50 will be invited to participate in this program, with kits sent directly to their place of residence. Cairns Oncologist Dr Ritwik Pandey knows all too well the dangers of being complacent, and has only one thing to say to those hesitating to take action…

“Unfortunately, most people don’t approach their doctor until they experience symptoms, but just because you don’t have symptoms doesn’t mean to say you don’t have bowel cancer. “People who experience concern, perhaps due to a history of bowel cancer in their family, or changed bowel habits, should be visiting their GP to set the wheels in motion to have a colonoscopy. Colonoscopies have come a long way, they’ve never been easier, and at Cairns Private Hospital we have state of the art equipment and our own highly skilled anaesthetists,” says Dr Chin. I’m the first to admit, as someone with bowel cancer history on both sides of the family, it’s a very simple procedure, painless, and over before you know it. In fact, you won’t know anything about it. “All bowel cancers start as a benign polyp, slowly progressing into cancer as it grows larger. Finding polyps in this early phase and removing them at colonoscopy, is the best and easiest way of preventing bowel cancer,” says Cairns Surgeon and Endoscopist, Dr Pieter Prinsloo.

HORMONES

AND GRUMPY OLD MEN As women grow older they reach a point in their lives called menopause when their hormone production decreases rapidly leading to a number of symptoms and consideration of hormone replacement. Men also have a decrease in their hormone levels which is more gradual from their peak in their 20’s and 30’s. The male hormone testosterone is produced in the testicles and leaks into the blood stream where it is carried through the circulation to have its effect. Male hormone levels can actually decrease by 1-2% per year. Approximately 10% of men aged 40-60 and 30% of men aged 60-80 have significantly decreased hormone levels. This is often accompanied by an increase in weight particularly fat around the abdomen. It is rather like the chicken and the egg as to which comes first. While the decrease in hormone levels can lead to an increase in weight, the increase in weight can also lead to hormones being taken up in the fat and therefore being less effective. The symptoms that are likely to develop from a low hormone level are psychological, physical and sexual. Psychological symptoms may consist of tiredness, depressed mood, irritability, poor concentration and reduce short term memory. Physical symptoms consist of weakness, muscle and joint pains, thinning of bones (Osteoporosis), sweating and hot flushes, dryness of the skin, reduced muscle mass and strength, increased abdominal girth and obesity, breast enlargement and reduced body and facial hair. Sexual symptoms involve reduced libido (desire), erectile dysfunction and disturbances of ejaculation.

Testosterone deficiency is diagnosed by taking a full history and examination and blood tests including hormone levels measured on two separate days in the morning when the level is at its highest. It is also necessary to have a prostate check as if there is a possibility of prostate cancer then hormone replacement may worsen the situation. In fact, reducing testosterone levels is one method of treatment for prostate cancer. While a number of men may show “normal “ hormone levels it is impossible to know what the level used to be at its peak and therefore what the relative reduction might now be. Testosterone deficiency can be treated with replacement using capsules, skin patches, creams and gels and injections. If treatment is given then the man will require regular blood test follow-ups including prostate specific androgen (PSA). It is important to note that this is replacement of deficient levels of hormone and that the doses given to replace testosterone will not have similar effects to massive doses of testosterone sometimes taken to markedly increase muscle bulk as may be used by some body builders. It is important that the dosage is personalised and monitored. So called “testosterone rage” appears to only occur in men in whom extreme doses have been taken.

Testosterone

• Male hormone levels can actually decrease by 1-2% per year. • Testosterone deficiency is diagnosed by taking a full history and examination and blood tests. • Testosterone replacement may turn “grumpy old men” into “nice guys”.

DR TOM

WRIGHT Dr Tom Wright is proud to belong to a very select club of second generation doctors practicing in Cairns. There are only a handful of doctors who have followed their medical father’s footsteps to practice medicine. Other members of the club are Dr John Knot, Surgeon, Dr Mike Mansfield, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Tim Warnock, Paediatrician and Dr Kate Heazlewood, Surgical Assistant. Tom was born in England but he and his family moved to central Africa when he was 3 years old and his childhood and early teenage years were spent in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, now called Zambia and Zimbabwe. Dr James Wright, Tom’s father worked in the rural areas of central Africa dealing with everything from tuberculosis; hippopotamus bites through to cataract surgery for blindness. (Shades of the Fred Hollows Foundation) The family migrated to Cairns in 1965 where James Wright joined Drs Charles Knot and Graham Cousins in an Abbott Street medical practice situated where the Night Markets now stand. James became a popular general practitioner in Cairns in the 1960s and 70s, whilst Tom’s mother Joan Wright established her own identity as a teacher at Trinity Bay High School and as an environmental activist advocating for the establishment of the Tropical Rainforest World Heritage listing. Tom Wright completed his high schooling at Trinity Bay High School then studied medicine at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. After two years of work in rural Queensland Tom moved to England where he developed an interest in obstetrics and gynecology.

Returning to Sydney in the 1980’s with a young family Tom completed his specialist qualification at Westmead Hospital in Sydney’s Western suburbs. After at 5 year period of practice in Mackay, Tom moved to Cairns in 1990 joining Drs Michael Carrette and Bob Miller providing obstetric and gynecology services in both Cairns Base Hospital and Calvery Hospital, later to be renamed the Cairns Private Hospital. Now Tom practices from his own rooms in Flecker House. As well as being a member of the close knit second generation club Tom is proud to have been able to provide obstetric services to two generations of women in Cairns. “It was a humbling experience when I first delivered a baby for a mother who herself I had delivered” says Dr Wright. “I realised that I was an important part of the midwifery, obstetric, and paediatric team in providing safe and satisfying birthing experiences to two generations of Cairns mothers.” Despite having a busy obstetric practice, Tom still maintains an interest in gynecology and provides a wide range of office gynecological procedures coupled with in hospital gynecological surgery based on the well resourced theatres of the Cairns Private Hospital. Tom has recently renovated his offices and now has an associate, Dr Pheobe Hong, working along side him. Tom welcomes Dr Phoebe’s enthusiasm for laparoscopic gynecological surgery and her fresh approach to obstetric care.

When it comes to health, there’s nothing more important than knowing your doctor, except perhaps your doctor knowing you, inside out. When you find a practice where doctors are treating the children of patients they treated as children, you know you’ve chosen wisely. The family doctor-patient relationship is based on mutual trust and familiarity born on continuity, and that special, individual service that endures in private practice. Established in 1993 by Dr Cameron McLeod, Dr Chris Haug and Dr Dorothy Russell, the practice grew at a rapid pace, giving way to opportunity for Dr Cathy Meehan to join the team in March 1994, and Dr Bruce Bilbe five years later. The partners quickly earned a reputation for high quality medical care for the whole family. Dr Katherine Holzhauser, a Cairns local, started out as a patient of the practice from childhood, eventually joining the team as a GP Registrar in 2014 before becoming a partner this year. Twenty-four years on, McLeod Street Medical remains a private practice that is owned by its principal GP’s with original doctors and original patients. This quietly unassuming busy practice extended significantly in 2014 to celebrate its 21st birthday and has since built up to include ten doctors covering all aspects of family general practice caring for our multi-generations of families. Our warm and friendly CairnsLife 72 Magazine

team work hard to maintain the family environment that we have created. The practice includes doctors, an onsite psychologist and an exercise physiologist, a dietician, pathology collection and a pharmacy conveniently located next door. Centrally located in the city there is easy access to local radiology and both hospitals. “We have a good mix of doctors here, male and female, covering all aspects of medicine from men and women’s health to mental health, geriatrics, skin health, immigration, diving, maritime, employment and travel medicals, sports medicine and childhood health and vaccinations,” says Cathy. McLeod Street Medical is also committed to supporting the training of our doctors and nursing students, being a registered training practice, supervising medical students, nursing students and GP registrars – doctors training to be GPs. “McLeod Street Medical is a truly special practice – I love living and working in such a great place as Cairns. The team, the service ethos and the atmosphere definitely combine to induce good health,” says Katherine. Consideration for our patients ongoing care is our number one priority. We look forward to our family taking care of yours.

DON’T DELAY, CHECK TODAY Melanoma represents only 2% of skin cancers diagnosed in Australia, but accounts for 75% of skin cancer deaths (Melanoma Institute Australia). The great news is that if detected early enough, 90% of Melanomas can be cured with simple surgery. This is done by a doctor with further training in Dermoscopy and using a hand held device called a Dermatoscope. Dermosocopy increases the diagnostic accuracy by up to 80%. Using just the naked eye is not advisable, as certain identifying features are not always visible. This will also aid the doctor to eliminate unnecessary excisions of benign lesions. Over the last few years the Barre Fitness Craze has been taking the world and Australia by storm. A CONVERSATION WITH

Rosie Batty

In 2014 Rosie Batty’s son, Luke, asked her for a few more minutes cricket practise with his father. When he left her and headed back across the cricket ground, it would be the last time she would ever speak to him. To this day, she still can’t fathom how his dad could murder someone he loved. At first Rosie believed it to be an accident, but the horrible truth was soon revealed and she relives the trauma everyday of her life. Standing on stage of the school hall at Trinity Anglican School, she relays that speaking about it to the young teenage students is difficult, many of them being of an age that Luke would be now if he were still alive. “It never gets easier talking about this issue to young people, but it’s so very important that I do.”

“I’m on a path to expose family violence and to ensure that victims receive the respect, support and safety that they deserve,” she told TAS students. The boys and girls listened, quieted by the suffering Rosie has endured since that fateful day three years ago. Her

CairnsLife 78 Magazine

message to them aims to touch the lives of young people with a strong promise: that they will never accept being a victim of violence, nor be perpetrators of it. “We do know that if we were to hit somebody, that would be wrong. But why do we preference that by saying its family or domestic? Violence is violence. If someone assaulted us in the street, we would be indignant and enraged. Yet we accept and make compromises to people that commit violence behind closed doors.” Speaking away from the stage, Rosie said, “For children it is the most difficult as they are powerless. If they speak out, they can be in great danger or put at great risk. Typically for parents and teachers and schools, a child is more stigmatised and isolated than in the past, and it’s about being able to recognise what is happening with children and addressing bullying in schools.” Rosie Batty travelled to North Queensland by invitation of Zonta Club of Cairns. She spoke to media and TAS students about her story as part of her aim to stimulate the conversations around family violence.

SOCIAL IS THE NEW BLACK C AT H O L I C E D U CAT I O N WORDS AND PHOTO BY SARAH JANE GRIFFITHS

Gone are the days where a parent’s primary source of school news came in the form of a printed newsletter, scrunched up as a ball at the bottom of a child’s school bag. Catholic Education have been working with the schools in the Cairns Diocese to integrate the use of numerous social and digital media platforms, to enhance methods of communication. “We see new media as a great opportunity,” said Cairns Catholic Education’s Manager of Governance and Engagement, Andrew McKenzie. “We encourage the positive use of digital communication tools and social media in our schools, particularly in student learning and parent engagement.

Often you will find that parents don’t have the time to visit the school regularly, and what this app does is allow us to communicate and engage with them in a way that they can access easily. It’s not that parents aren’t interested, they are just busy!

“But we are also mindful of the potential dangers resulting from misuse, so we are working to ensure the use of social media in a school context by all members of the school community, including parents, is consistent with our codes of conduct and the mission and values of Catholic education,” he said. Kerry Yelavich, teacher at St Joseph’s School in Parramatta Park, is one of many Catholic Education staff who have integrated the use of the Seesaw App in the classroom to promote parent engagement in learning.

Above: Kerry Yelavich, teacher at St Joseph’s Primary School in Parramatta Park, helping her students Lana Bruce, Joel Prince, and Molly Perazza to send the day’s school work home to their parents.

“There is a lot that the kids do that doesn’t go home,” Said Kerry. “What Seesaw allows us to do is send home the children’s achievements in ‘two seconds’, giving parents an insight into what the kids have done at school that day and what they are learning.

“Often you will find that parents don’t have the time to visit the school regularly, and what this app does is allow us to communicate and engage with them in a way that they can access easily. It’s not that parents aren’t interested, they are just busy! Mrs Cheryl Chin, a parent at St Joseph’s said, “St Joey’s parents are huge fans of the Seesaw App which enables us to receive timely visual updates on our children’s learning progress. Keeping parents up to date this way gives us the opportunity to become an integral part of their learning activities as these “learning conversations” continue at home.” Cairns Catholic Education is also integrating the use of Pages and Closed Groups on Facebook, allowing the promotion of both the wonderful work of students and the initiatives of the schools to the wider community. With an education and community focus, these groups are proving to be the preferred option for distributing updates between schools and parents, eliminating the need for some of the more time and resource consuming traditional communications. “Our parent group ensures that all questions are answered within a quick time frame,” said David Adams-Jones, Principal of St Therese’s School, Bentley Park. “Our parents absolutely love it. Their Facebook icon ‘beeps’ with a message to let them know when something has been shared within the group. It doesn’t get much easier than that!”

LEXUS DRIVES AHEAD IN PASSENGERCAR SALES Lexus has posted substantial year-on-year sales growth for its luxury passenger cars, reversing the trend of Australia’s national new-vehicle market. Lexus dealers have expanded CT 200h demand by 46.6 per cent year-on-year while the IS Line has gained almost seven per cent and the ES Line 3.6 per cent. Combined with continued strong sales of its impressive SUV line-up, total Lexus sales are close to matching the record-breaking pace achieved last year. Nationally Lexus have a luxury market share of 8.25% and a year to date market share of 7.03%, Lexus Of Cairns, has gone one step further and has a market share for April of

13.79% and a year to date of 17.52%. Grant Woolcock Sales Manager at Lexus of Cairns attributes these results to a combination of our high level of customer service and the positive word of mouth that circulates in a regional location like Cairns. Our high level of customer service is enhanced by the fact that both our sales manager Grant Woolcock and service master technician Peter Conoplia have been with the company for a substantial period of time. Between the two they have accrued period of experience of 55 years. A major benefit that comes with the purchase of new Lexus is the Encore Privileges program. The standard programme provides

a complimentary loan car when your vehicle is being serviced, Lexus roadside Drive care, and a monthly copy of the Encore magazine. When you purchase your Lexus from Lexus of Cairns, you will in addition receive a complimentary car wash, & airport valet service for four years as well as invitations to their VIP events. VEHICLE ACCIDENT REPAIR GURUS ASR C O L L I S I O N SPE CI A L I S T S WORDS BY JANIE BARTON P H O T O S B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H

We spend so much time taking care of our cars – keeping them clean, getting them serviced and looking after them. But when they get damaged, no matter how major or minor the casualty is, it can be quite devastating. Fortunately, that pain is short-lived when you turn to the vehicle accident repair specialists at ASR Collision Specialists (formerly Airport Smash Repairs). The locally owned and operated business, which has been reliably servicing Cairns for more than 35 years, is renowned for ensuring damaged vehicles are expertly restored to their former glory. Its team of 28 specialised technicians provide a range of accident-repair services, including spray-painting and panel beating, out of its two facilities, in North Cairns and Edmonton. Owner Garry Gilholm started the business near the Cairns airport in 1978. It outgrew its premises and expanded a number of times over the years, including last year when the Cairns shop installed a customised aluminium repair facility - the only one in the region - to become Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Australia Factory Approved Repairers. “We expanded the repair shop at Moffat Street about 18 months ago, purchased the required tools JLR stipulate and then built the new building called ASR Prestige,” said Corey Croft, ASR Collision Office Manager. “These were requirements by JLR to ensure that we met their high level for certification to be a Factory Approved Repairer.” Technicians servicing these prestigious vehicles also had to be trained at a high level. “They attend training sessions CairnsLife 83 Magazine

conducted by JLR,” Mr Croft said. “Their trainer has a high-fail rate, and our guys have passed all the courses.” ASR also has expertise in repairing Mercedes Benz, BMW, AUDI, Volkswagen, other European prestige vehicles as well as most makes and models of all vehicles. “We work on everything from a 1985 Holden Commodore to a 2017 Jaguar,” Mr Croft said. “We have access to repair methods that are produced by the manufacturer and follow these to ensure the approved factory method is conducted on all vehicles.” Thanks to its long-standing and trustworthy reputation, ASR Collision is also an approved repairer for major insurance companies including Suncorp, AAMI, APIA, Just Car Insurance, CGU, NRMA, Allianz, Wesfarmers and Coles Insurance, to name just a few. While its customer-service focus, trustworthy service and dedication has made ASR Collision the success it is today, the true skill lies in the passion of its team. “We put ourselves in our customer’s shoes,” Mr Croft said. “All our staff have a genuine love of vehicles, and we understand that our services are often needed in stressful situations, which is why we handle all vehicles with care and ensure we do our absolute best at all times.” ASR Collision Specialists 31-33 Moffat St, North Cairns Ph: 453 5335 57 Swallow Road, Edmonton Ph: 4045 1645 www.asrcollision.com.au

DOGTAINERS ARE HERE TO HELP YOU AVOID PET SCAMS SARAH & DARREN ALCORN

Looking for a pet online? Don’t get scammed! It can be the ugly side of purchasing a new pet. Pet scams do exist and can happen to anyone. It’s important to learn how to spot a scam otherwise you could become a victim. At Dogtainers Cairns, we occasionally get a call from someone who is worried that they may have been scammed. Pet scams seem to be everywhere on the internet. Scams are a crime and often these scammers use a known pet transport name or logo in their pet schemes, as well as steal portions of websites to set up these scams and make them look more legitimate. Scammers will generally offer to provide free or inexpensive puppies, charging just for the price of shipping. In most cases there is no dog and no shipment, so please take precautions before paying money for services that may not exist. Many scammers will ask questions about how you will care for the pet and insist that they want only loving homes forever homes for their “babies” Pet scammers often use websites like Gumtree or Facebook to advertise pets that do not exist. Expensive animals, like Bulldogs or toy breeds, are offered at very low prices or at no cost—all you have to do is pay for the shipping. If you see an ad like this, chances are it is a scam. Scammers also regularly use Western Union or Money Gram as a payment method. Unlike PayPal or a recognised credit card merchant system, Western Union and Money Gram payments are often untraceable and non-refundable. Once you have made an initial payment, scammers will often asked for additional payments to overcome various problems, changes in crates, vet bills or insurance. They may threaten that if the additional charges are not paid immediately you could be charged for abandoning the pet. Scammer often use emotional manipulation to obtain more money from their victims.

First Class

How to protect yourself • Be cautious - if the advertised price of a pedigree puppy looks too good to be true, it probably is. • Ring the person who owns the pet and talk to them about it. Even if they say they are overseas they should still have a contact number. Never rely purely on emails when purchasing or acquiring a pet. Ask about vaccinations and microchips – if the scammer says that this has been done, ask which vet clinic completed the work. • In Queensland, the state government has introduced laws to allow the person who bred a dog to be contacted and this applies to any dog born on or after 26 May 2017. A person who sells, advertises or gives away a dog, must have a Supply Number. • Don’t trust the legitimacy of an ad just because it appears in a reputable newspaper or online classifieds website - scammers often use these. • Never pay for services in a way that the payment cannot be traced. Avoid any arrangement with a stranger that asks for upfront payment via money order or wire transfer – it’s rare to recover money sent this way. • Search online using the exact wording in the ad—many well-known scams can be found this way. • Organise the transport of your pet with a pet transport company that you know and trust. • If you are in doubt, seek advice from someone in the industry such as a reputable breeder’s association, vet or pet transport company. If you think you have been scammed Stop all communication with the scammer Report the matter to the authorities Contact your financial institution Alert others to the scam For more information, visit https://www.ipata.org/pet-scams https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/

THE HOME BUILDING PROCESS MADE SIMPLE RO SLY N S M I T H

‘ Wom en i n Bu i l d i n g ’ Winner Q M BA 2016

Awa r d

Have you thought about building a new home and then thought ‘It’s all too hard to get what I want in a home’? Remember there are a few good reasons why people build a new home. They have a home that is personalised to them; they have a home that is built to the latest building standards and that’s very important when we live in a cyclone area like Far North Queensland; and they have a home that, with a little care, is a very low maintenance home compared to other, older ones. Some people may have a sense of trepidation when considering the building process. This is an exciting time and your builder will be able to explain the process to you in clear, simple steps. Consider that you need to have a good working relationship with your builder, so you must feel comfortable with them and not afraid to ask some questions. I don’t mean hassle them day and night but, within reason, make sure you can communicate easily. There are different stages to the building process and each one will require your input to make them progress smoothly. Some of these steps take place before construction can actually start on your block of land. If your contract is subject to finance the builder will require a letter from the financier stating the amount of funds that have been approved. Once this is received, or you pay a deposit, your working drawings for construction approval will be commenced. A soil test is required so engineering can be designed. Sloping sites around Cairns may require extra engineering for retaining walls, suspended slabs or site drainage. If you are building in the ‘Hillslopes’ area in Cairns Regional Council then you will

need to select your external colour scheme or if you are moving soil on your land CRC may require details of this and some sub divisions may require a covenant approval by the developer before your home can be approved. Your home is also required to have an acceptable Energy Efficiency Certification. Much of this work is done by your builder and will carry on in the background. Once your working drawings are completed they will be certified by the engineer. You should check them as well and give your approval that this is what you want in your new home. They will then be ready to lodge with the Certifier. While this stage is proceeding it’s a good idea to get all your colour and product selections done so the builder can be ready to produce orders for suppliers and subcontractors as soon as your home project is approved. This is the exciting part of the process where you get to choose colours, products and finishes that will put a little bit of YOU into your new home. If you have any questions or are unclear on any of the processes ask your builder to explain it to you as a good line of communication ensures the smooth building process.
