Aya’s nimble fingers deftly thread the amber beads, one by one with silver spacers inbetween, chatting merrily as I inquire about the beginnings of her business 21 years ago. She speaks with a genuine warmth and an honest love that you often find in entrepreneurs. “It was the end of the road for me. It was the place that I ran out of money and stock whilst travelling Australia. So I had to find work and Cairns was where I happen to be before I was heading out West” She found work in cutting opals and later branched off into refining her craft with silversmithing. Delving deeper, it seems there had always been a love of making , hand dyed silk clothing to pottery, glass, leather to wood. Aya has tried them all finally settling with jewellery making with IndiviJewel. Starting with a humble kiosk at Cairns Central in 2003, her handmade and off-beat wearable pieces became familiar with the locals who still seek her out today. IndiviJewel found itself needing more space to accomodate the growing range, and found solace in Abbott St before settling in at Shields St for it’s longest residency yet. Somewhat a gypsy, the shop has made its final journey and has settled into the Bolands Centre at the heart of the city. Spence St is fast becoming the jewellery street of Cairns with five independent jewellery shops each with their own signature flair. “We cater to any budget, whether you are looking for a bead that costs 10 cents or bone and horn ear plugs to 18k gold jewellery with beautiful gemstones. We can take an old earring and transform it into a new piece of jewellery. We love to revive and make things wearable again. The sky is the limit”. Aya attributes the success of IndiviJewel to a tribe of creative women that make the shop pulse, Bridee and Adrienne and the past creative crew.

“I am a single working mother and all current crew are mothers. We collaborate and make it work for each of us trying to accomodate each others needs. We bring children to work if we have to”. Speaking of the future, Aya hopes to get back to her grass roots of showcasing talent from artists all over the world as well as some innovative local creations. If we as consumers, take a more conscious approach and use our dollar as if we are voting. We could boost our local economy by spending our money with small businesses and supporting self-employed people. It could be your neighbour who sells online, a local that sells homemade wares or a friend that runs their own cafe. What matters is the choices we make to create a stronger community.

GRUMPY OLD MAN with
Danny Betros The United States of Entertainment. Due to the takeover of the world by social media, it stuns me daily to find that on a lot of news feeds space is given to the loony behaviour of the world’s “look at me” self-appointed talentless celebrities.
somewhere that has it. I get to watch the commercials on the Discovery Channel with the Deadliest Catch in the breaks, but I’m so fascinated with the array of weird shows about all sorts of people getting tattoos, fat blokes stuffing their face with food, gun shows, hillbillies living “off grid”, spoilt housewives, blokes playing with cars etc . The U.S. will literally make a reality show about just about anything and try to convince us it’s all real.
What’s this crap you are watching?
Nothing bugs me more than these imbeciles. Any story involving a Kardashian, Kanye, Bieber, Minaj, Cyrus and others of their kind immediately makes my bowels rumble. It’s too bad that stupidity is not painful as these people would be on permanent life support.
The daily shock and awe campaign by social media on who is bonking who, who was seen swimming at some exotic location, who is wearing some over the top dress at some insignificant award ceremony where the behaviour is more outlandish each time, who’s not wearing clothes at all and who’s been doing drugs (again) makes you wonder just how shallow our society has become. I really dislike people who pretend to be outrageous in an attempt to be popular. It is so typical of modern day Facebook. Now days it’s all about how many hits you can get on your site so you can sell ads; and as the saying goes, sex sells. There can be a serious sad, tragedy occurring somewhere but you can bet that the main news feed story will be something about Kim Kardashian’s massive arse. I can recall Pamela Anderson’s boob adjustment years ago was on the front page of most U.S. newspapers at the same time as the country was going to war. We don’t have pay TV in our house so I really only watch it when I go on holidays and stay
On our last holiday having come off the beach in a grumpy mood after being stung by a blue bottle, I stormed into our apartment sat down and bellowed “What’s this crap you are watching?” to my wife and daughter. I was told to sit down and be quiet. It was a show about women buying wedding dresses in New York at some snobby outlet (Say Yes to the Dress). After a few minutes I find myself commenting at the show, making smart arse remarks, criticizing dresses and engaging in conversation with my wife and daughter about fashion, body shapes, boobs (again) and other clothing issues. I was forced to confront the uncomfortable fact that I was relaxed and enjoying the show and perhaps a fashion expert. A peace had come over me and my grumpiness. It didn’t last long however because straight after the next show was Dance Mums, and that I just couldn’t handle. I went “off ” and straight back to the commercials on Discovery. Six months later on a trip to Canada, up late one night watching Canadian TV, the Dress show came on. Well, I got excited and settled in ready to watch but then can you believe it… it was a bloody repeat.

In My Opinion
In your opinion, how do we raise the bar in Cairns and define ourselves as a premium entertainment precinct to continue enticing local, national and international acts to present the calibre of performances that we have seen in the region this year?

the necessary enhancements providing facilities that will match our southern counterparts and thus benefitting the audiences of all the art forms by allowing them to see the best that we and the rest of the country and international companies can provide. A win, win situation. The Gallery, proposed Historical Museum and the support given to the local ‘grass roots’ Cultural Organizations is having a tangible effect on the volunteers of these groups creating, at last, a sense of mutual appreciation on all sides. The financial backing needs to be maintained and improved upon to guarantee a continuation of all our dreams.

offer are the reef and day tours. When the sun goes down and people are looking for something to do, there are many theatre shows and productions on offer showcasing talent from the area, as well as touring performance artists. After leaving Cairns in search of more opportunities and travelling the world as an entertainer, returning to help grow the opportunities for local artists and the arts community as a whole has been important to us personally in developing the arts scene in Cairns. Enticing other talented and successful Cairns entertainment exports to return home and do the same would be extremely beneficial.
With the current Council’s positive attitude towards improvements in the city generally and its Entertainment Facilities specifically, we’re on the right path to achieve that end in my opinion. For example, the proposed much needed improvements to the Civic Theatre and Munro Martin Park opposite will allow both locals and visitors the chance to admire our Cultural ‘Heart of the City’, both from the visual and performance space point of view and likewise, the users of all the spaces. Consequently, local, national and international cultural productions will be advantaged tremendously with
From our past experience it’s all about support from the community. We need to make sure we show our support by attending the entertainment venues and events that are produced in Cairns. We’ve seen many talented artists move to larger cities in search of a permanent job in the performing arts, as there are very limited opportunities at the present time. If we are able to offer the same opportunity here in Cairns, we would be able to see the calibre of talent improve, and therefore the calibre of shows also increase. For our business it’s about changing the mind set that the only things that Cairns has to

Lunch with our Councillor’s
John Schilling Words by Michelle Stacpoole
‘‘
Within moments of meeting John Schilling, it becomes apparent that the property developer turned councillor is passionate about improving the facilities in one of our fastest growing areas. The member for Division 2, who represents residents in the suburb of Edmonton and parts of Mount Sheridan and Bentley Park, has dedicated his time in office to ensuring that the sporting and recreational needs of the children in the area are catered to. “We’ve got room to do things,” says John. With a budget of $16 million to be spent over the next three to four years on sporting fields for soccer, softball, baseball, cricket and vigoro, as well as courts for netball, there is also the view to increase the size of the Edmonton Leisure Centre and PCYC. “The PCYC have just opened up for the second year for indoor soccer for the kids and they are overflowing. They really need another two full size courts down there to play on,” says John.
‘‘
Big things are happening for kids on the south side.
“If we don’t do this stuff for our kids, what are we going to leave them?”
John’s dedication to sport, health and fitness led him to adopt a vegan lifestyle early in adulthood, (during our lunch, he pulls an avocado out of his jacket to add to his salad because apparently “they never give you enough”), and to his first career as an assistant golf professional. As a 2nd Dan Black Belt, John also played a key role in establishing the Matsumoto Karate Academy in Cairns in the early eighties.
Moving back to Queensland in the 1970’s, John worked in various roles from picking grapes to working in a tin mine on the Tablelands before moving across to real estate and development. The owner of Mac Constructions NQ , John believes that his background in real estate and property has enabled him to look at projects and focus on the outcome. “It’s about looking at things and being smart,” he says. “It’s all about the outcome,” adds John. A member of Mayor Bob Manning’s Unity Team, John is also Chairman of both the Theatre Precinct and the Tobruk Pool Redevelopments.
Originally from Bowen, John grew up in Sydney’s outer west. One of four boys, he learnt the value of work ethic from a young age when he was required to work in his parent’s general store every Saturday morning.
With a forward focus and dedication to achieving results, John believes that the future of Cairns and, in particular, Division 2, is exciting.
“That’s where I got my first introduction to how you deal with people,” says John.
“If we don’t do this stuff for our kids, what are we going to leave them?”

In Her Shoes
Andrea Huelin
Artist
Words by Michelle Stacpoole
It was a stroke of fate that saw Andrea Huelin pick up a paint brush professionally. Originally from Perth, Andrea graduated from Curtin University in Western Australia with a degree in English before working as a journalist and management trainee for ABC Radio in Western Australia.
Relocating to Cairns in the mid nineties, Andrea took up the position of Regional Program Manager for ABC Radio, before moving across to the Cairns Regional Gallery as the public programs coordinator. “I really loved it there. I’d really found my niche,” says Andrea. Working part time in marketing roles for the Centre of Contemporary Arts, JUTE Theatre and KICK Arts while caring for her young children, Andrea began indulging her creative passion by treading the boards in productions at the Rhondo Theatre. Revisiting her childhood hobby of painting, she also started creating the backdrops for plays such as The Phantom of the Opera and The Pirates of Penzance at the Cairns Civic Theatre. It was only when Andrea missed out on a marketing and promotions job she rather embarrassingly thought she was a shoe-in for, that she considered picking up the paintbrush on a more permanent basis. “I decided that maybe it was a sign to do something different, so I enrolled in a painting class with Lenore Howard [a prominent Cairns based artist] to see if I still had any art skills,” she says. From her first oiled brush stroke, Andrea was hooked. Beginning with portraits of her children, Andrea moved on to her Minutiae exhibition, a collection of paintings that document the little things; the fleeting moments of daily life. “They are glimpses, almost like memories, when you blink and you just catch an image. Some of the details aren’t there but the essence is,” says Andrea. After noticing her work, a barrister friend put Andrea’s name forward for a portrait commission of retiring Supreme Court Judge Justice Stanley Jones AO. Now hanging permanently in the Supreme Court in Cairns, Andrea’s successful commission propelled her career as an artist.
12
My first comisiion: Former Justice Stanley Jones AO on the occasion of his retirement from the Cairns Supreme Court in 2011. It’s Oil on canvas, 76.2cm x 101.6cm.
Noticed by the Cairns Regional Gallery and included in an emerging artists exhibition, Andrea has had several solo exhibitions, and will reappear later this year at the Cairns Regional Gallery as part of a large group exhibition to celebrate the gallery’s twenty year anniversary. With her new collection ‘Domestic Encounters’ currently on exhibit in The Art Room at Vivo Restaurant, and as guest artist at Open Heart Studio for the month of November, Andrea Huelin is firmly established as an artist of distinction within the Cairns community. “To find myself with a style that is starting to feel like my own, and a few exhibitions under my belt and a bit of demand is really exciting and a bit unexpected,” says Andrea.

on track for 2016 opening new name of the street,” Mr Reed said. “It’s a wonderful tribute to Saint Mary MacKillop and it’s a great beginning for the school.”
The Open Day will be at the College, on MacKillop Road, off Mount Peter Road, at Mount Peter. There will tours of the facilities under construction and addresses by the College Principal, Luke Reed, the architect Mark Buttrose and Catholic Education Services Executive Director, Bill Dixon, as well as a free sausage sizzle and kids’ activities.
The community has shown a huge interest in college, which is gearing up for its opening for first term of 2016 with its first stage – Prep to Year 3 classes. The college is already in the process of planning for the expansion of the college to have facilities ready for Year 5 and Year 6 in 2018 and 2019. Design and planning will occur in 2016 with construction in 2017.
The first stage of the $5.7 million new Prep to Year 12 Catholic college near Edmonton is on track for its 2016 opening, catering initially for Prep to Year 3 students and growing into a full Prep to Year 12 college. Interest in the new school is high and enrolment positions for 2016 are quickly filling up.
Due to the great deal of feedback from families requesting secondary options be available as soon as possible, the college is exploring the possible early expansion into secondary school (Year 7) in 2018.
The college’s street address was originally on Springs Road, also known as Deppeler Road West, but Cairns Regional Council approached the Catholic Diocese with a request to change the name of the street to MacKillop Road.
The school will also have and Outside School Hours Care service when it opens. MacKillop Catholic College’s Principal Luke Reed welcomes students Aya Ghammachi and Zacary Veronese to the new school in Mount Peter, which is opening in 2016.

Teekay Shipping (Australia) is Australia’s pre-eminent ship and marine services company, with a long history of providing technical services to the Royal Australian Navy, Defence Materiel Organisation and the Australian Border Force. Teekay Shipping Australia employs 920 people including seafarers and shore staff across four locations. Teekay was established in Australia in 1997 and since this time has provided extensive marine services to the Australian mining industry and to government. Worldwide, Teekay Corporation employs 7,100 staff across 27 offices in 15 countries. Listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Teekay is responsible for managing and operating consolidated assets of approximately $12 billion, comprised of over 200 liquefied gas, offshore, tanker, and tug assets. Teekay’s newbuilding program is currently in excess of 40 vessels.
From modest beginnings in The Netherlands in 1927, Damen has grown into a multinational shipbuilding group with over 9,000 employees across 34 countries. Damen has acquired this leading position in the shipbuilding industry by utilising its unique standardised design concept. This construction approach enables innovative vessels at competitive prices with very short delivery times. Since 1969 Damen has built more than 5,000 vessels including over 100 ships with similar design requirements to the Pacific Patrol Boats. Unique in the shipbuilding world, Damen specialises in building naval and patrol vessels ranging from 7 metres to more than 200 metres in length. Damen has a history of delivering vessels to the Australian market on time, on budget. A recent example is the delivery of the offshore support vessel MV Besant, in July 2015. This 83 metre ship, and her sister ship, MV Stoker (due for delivery early 2016), will provide submarine rescue services to the Royal Australian Navy for the next 20 years. These ships will be followed in 2017 by an offshore patrol vessel, MV Sycamore, which will provide an aviation and junior officer training platform for the ADF
BSE Maritime Solutions, a privately owned Australian business, operates from three separate facilities as BSE Cairns Slipway, BSE Brisbane Slipways and BSE Brisbane Shiplifts. BSE Cairns Slipways is located in close proximity to the HMAS Cairns naval base. Both Navy and Australian Border Force vessels including the new Cape Class vessels utilise the Slipways’ extensive wharfage, in-water repair facilities, 1200 tonne main slipway, side slip, 60 meter dry dock and fully enclosed refit sheds.
Norship provides a complete refit service for Australian Border Force (Customs) vessels and the current Pacific Patrol Boats. Norship also performs scheduled refits as well as emergency docking for the Navy’s Armidale Class Patrol Boats and for Australian Border Force vessels. Norship services commercial operators, government agencies and private vessel owners.
On the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef Situated in Cairns – equipped with state-of-the-art training facility GBRIMC offers a currently comprehensive range of training qualifications and certificates. They are perfectly positioned to offer ongoing support and training for a new PPB fleet, with climatic and geographical similarities to the proposed operational areas. CAIRNS SOLUTION
Wins the SEA3036 tender
Only near term opportunity to deliver on commitments set out in the Northern Australia White Paper
The Department of Defence has recognised Cairns as a hub for minor war vessels similar to the PacificPatrol Boats. Cairns is ideally placed due to its location, resident capability and the location of a local Defence Material Organisation (DMO) Support Project Office. The Cairns Solution offers many advantages: • The bid team has a proven record of delivering on time and on budget; • It is the only bid that is based in Northern Australia close to the vessels’ area of operation and the required areas of maintenance; • The bid is consistent with the Northern Australia White Paper’s goal of building industry and economic activity in Northern Australia; • The Cairns Solution is the only bid located in a geographic area where the employment opportunities provided can make a significant difference to address Indigenous disadvantage; and • A successful bid would be transformational to the North Queensland economy.
Conclusion Cairns is the logical place to construct and maintain vessels designed to patrol the waters off Northern Australia. The Cairns Solution bid team has a proven record of delivering vessels of this type. We are seeking your help to support and promote the bid, externally and to your friends, neighbours and colleagues, visit www.cairnsforthewin. com to discover how
Furthermore, a shipbuilding program of this scale will promote the diversification of the North Queensland economy, while building the local skills base. Such economic diversification and skills building are critical to the ongoing success of the development of Northern Australia.

OUR COMMENT PPBR Bid - What you can do…
This bid represents a significant opportunity for our region, and potentially the thin end of the wedge when it comes to attracting external investment outside of the region’s more familiar commercial pillars of tourism, and agriculture. 150 new jobs, surety for our ship building and specialist maritime education combined are excellent in their own right, but they are by no means the entire picture. The well documented multiplier effect suggest that every dollar spent on the Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement (PPBR) scheme will lead to over 5 dollars flowing through the local economy. Additionally the potential benefits of Cairns solidifying it’s image as ready for business can only begin to be surmised. But, and as always there is a but, Cairns is not the only contender and as such the success of the bid is not a foregone conclusion. Consequently it now seems to fall to our collective responsibility to ensure that everyone of influence knows that Cairns wants to win this business. We the public (that’s you and me) need to make as much noise as possible, simply sitting back and waiting for the usual path of business to unfold may not be sufficient. There are a number of ways that we can show our desire for this bid to succeed. Mobilise social media - The #Cairnsforthewin will give you all the information you need to follow the bid. It can be used to find the information via google, Facebook instagram and twitter. DO share the Facebook, page there are, over 100,000 registered Facebook users in our region, between us we know all of them. Take the time to buy a stamp and put printer to paper, or use a pen if you still remember how, and send your message of support to those in power. Paper still caries more weight than electrons in the corridors of power: Australia’s pre-eminent ship and marine services company; long history of technical services to the RAN, DMO and Australian Customs and Border Protection Service Cairns facilities that repaired and maintained Royal Australian Navy ships for 30+ years; RAN Fremantle Class Patrol Boats built in the Cairns Slipways United community commitment to a successful project

Taking the Journey into the outdoors
Evolving into inside out living, Samsara has ventured into landscape architecture and outdoor design. With some of his earliest memories involving working on gardens, Samsara owner Robert Steele has turned his lifelong passion for designing outdoor spaces into part of the Samsara experience. With a contemporary style influenced by tropical Asian and modernist styles, Robert travels the world hand picking outdoor furniture, art and accent pieces. Best described as uncluttered and modern, with an abundant use of water, ponds, linear and angular walkways, a Samsara garden is unique and timeless.
We work with your architect and building designer to ensure your garden design is not an after thought, but an integral part of your full design project, says Robert. “We see outdoor as an extension of our living spaces and create seamless inside out environments that reflect the personality and lifestyle of the owners, while designing spaces that accentuate the living areas and parallel the architecture, he adds. Offering a full garden design service that includes garden art and lighting, pool designs and plantscapings, Robert is available for consultation at Samsara Furniture.

Cairns builders, designers and sponsors gathered at the Pullman International Hotel on Friday 16th October for the 2015 HIA Pioneer North Queensland Housing, Kitchen and Bathroom Awards. According to HIA Area Manager Russell Parnicott, all categories were well supported by HIA members, making the job of the judges extremely difficult. “The competition was so good and everything was so close, that the judges had a very difficult task,” he says. Citing the 2015 entries as some of the best he has seen in recent years, Mr Parnicott is keen to see what other accomplishments can be made across the region in the coming year. “A lot of entrants go on to win at national level, so we have
a lot of quality homes coming out of the region,” he says. MV Designer Homes took out the prestigious HIA Cairns Home of the Year Award, with judges suggesting it was a mark of excellence and innovation, and will compete well in the upcoming North Queensland Regional Housing Awards ceremony in November. Artizan Cabinets took out both the Kitchen of the Year and Bathroom of the Year categories. According to Mr Parnicott, the great thing about this year is that entrants presented new and innovative designs, rather than the standard home on a block and kitchen with a sink. “You could see a lot of thought and planning had gone into making these projects the best they could be,” he says.
BUILDING on the
TABLELANDS
In October, Noel and Desley Fisher celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary. Throughout the last eleven years or their marriage, the couple have been working together on another partnership, their business - Austart Homes Tablelands. Both Noel and Desley are born and bred Tablelanders. Noel from Mareeba and Desley from Dimbulah. Having seen the Tablelands develop and expand over the course of their lives, the Fishers now get great reward in building new homes across the Tablelands landscape for local people and families, just like them. At just 15 years of age, Noel started his trade under the guidance of his father, who in turn did his trade under his father, making Noel a third generation builder on the Tablelands. Over the years, Noel gained experience working on new homes and commercial constructions as a subcontractor and foreman.
By doing this we also get to demonstrate that our standard inclusions offer quality with great value for money.
The quality workmanship of Austart Homes Tablelands can now be seen on display at 8 Yarrabee Close, Mareeba. The display home is based on Austart’s standard inclusions, which Desley says is important for potential clients to see. “Rather than put our most extravagant design on display, we wanted our visitors to see what they could expect to get as a minimum standard with their new home,” said Desley. “That way there are no misconceptions.” “By doing this we also get to demonstrate that our standard inclusions offer quality with great value for money.” The Display Home at 8 Yarrabee Close, Mareeba, is open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, and Saturday 10am to 3pm. Noel & Desley Fisher are the franchisee of Austart Homes Tablelands. QBCC 1076708
When Noel was asked to supervise houses on the Tablelands by Austart Homes, he impressed the owners so much with his ability and knowledge of the industry that they asked him if he would like to build homes on the Tablelands under a franchise arrangement. With the help of Desley, business was soon underway. Desley runs the office and deals directly with clients, assisting with colour schemes, finishes, fixtures and fittings. Noel and Desley’s son, Matthew, also works in the family business, assisting with building schedules as well as the management and delivery of trade supplies.

First impressions count. With a client brief requesting their home have an eye catching street façade, the challenge at 14 Marina Quay was the lay out of the narrow lot. “It’s always important when you open the front door to have a nice view or a glimpse of something further down,” says builder Ash Moseley. “With water views out the back approximately 40 metres away, the challenge was to have all the living areas at the back of the house without having a long dreary hallway to get to them,” he adds. This was achieved by creating a hallway with vaulted ceilings and clear story louvers, and glass louvers at the end of the hallway enabling the view of boats on the water to be seen from the front of the property. With the bedroom wing separated from the living areas by a breezeway link, a galley style kitchen and a spacious interior with bi-fold doors for cross ventilation, the property provides a seamless indoor/outdoor transition.

Recently awarded with HIA Best Design, Best Custom Design & House of the Year 2015 for their stunning build at Park Ridge estate. Mark is no stranger to the building industry in Cairns and has over the many years built an impressive collection of accolades and trophies. What motivates Mark to continually strive to be a great builder with a solid reputation? “My team and we hold peoples’ dreams in our hands” says Mark. “Taking a conversation with clients about designing with them their home within a certain budget and turning that into a beautiful reality and positive story that they will enjoy and share for years to come – is extremely rewarding to me and my team”. MV Designer Homes is synonymous with delivering superior quality, elegant, imaginative and uniquely designed residences from Townsville to Port Douglas including the Atherton Tablelands. Difficult blocks are no problem, Mark and his design team specialize in those sites that present fantastic vistas but have arduous and complex elements to them. Working alongside the MV design team you get to
see your dream become real with their inhouse 3D visual presentations - that allow you to walk through each individual room to see and feel the space and textures you are creating and make changes that you can immediately see. This service is available to all MV Designer Homes clients, no matter what your size build – each client is treated exactly the same. MV idea of realizing design perfection is not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away. The owners of this latest award winning home found the right combination of builder and designer in MV Designer Homes. With a sloping and difficult site that held commanding views out over Park Ridge estate to the ocean – they needed a Builder that could take their wish list, think outside the design square and together come up with a plan that would turn their dream into a reality. House of the Year results speak for themselves. Located high on the estate, the design should not be like any other; it has to be unique. Not only did they want to capture the views, breezes and maximize their living space – the owners wanted a functional, family home that offered unique design concepts that upon entry your eyes are immediately drawn to. With 5 bedrooms
including an impressively enormous master suite, 3 large and full bathrooms, 2 lounge areas, a separate media room delivering state of the art entertainment system, CBUS system controls functionality in automation of electrical systems, a gourmet kitchen that any Master Chef would enjoy using and added inclusion of the Teppanyaki bar to suit more casual entertaining, coupled with impeccable finishes and inclusions makes this a spectacular home throughout. To top off the balmy tropical nights you can refresh and lounge in the ultimate swimming pool – infinity edge finish with alluring views out to the ocean and beyond. The owners comment is “WOW” they found the design phase exciting and couldn’t wait to watch their ideas come to life in 3D each week. They now have a beautiful award winning home that caters for their every need as a family, their every desire as a home owner and a deep sense of satisfaction and achievement – built on trust and understanding with a quality Builder and his team at MV Designer Homes. New Centre Brings Sunshine to Medical Care Amaroo Medical by Peddle Thorp Architects
“The articulated roof forms act as wells, flooding the interiors with natural light and this effect is amplified by the clever use of angled ceilings,” he said.
Local architects have capitalised on Mareeba’s customarily clear weather in the design of the new Amaroo Medical Centre.
“High-level glazing over the main reception and waiting area, along with an increased ceiling height, enhances this feeling of space and light.”
Peddle Thorp designed the new building on the outskirts of Mareeba with the aim of creating a distinctive addition to the landscape that remains in tune with its surroundings.
In a location that boasts 300 sunny days a year, Peddle Thorp’s design is also climate-conscious. “We positioned the building on the site to minimise heat loads and used large areas of the north-facing roof to install solar panelling to make the most of nature and reduce power costs.”
The practice’s Far North manager, Paul Whittle, said the 305m2 single-storey building was constructed using lightweight framed walls with cladding and glazing infills to take advantage of the 360 degree views.
“The glazing, insulation and deep eaves overhangs on the building’s exterior will further re-duce heat, and therefore cooling costs.
“The style of the roof is strongly influenced by agricultural buildings in the area, and while our planning enabled us to keep the building compact and efficient, the design allows expansive views to the ranges and tablelands all around,”
With Offices in Cairns and Townsville we are able to service your building projects directly.
He said clever design features were implemented to maximise light and space, while creating a low maintenance and sustainable building.

Builder
Building a new home – personalised to you.
Many people ask why they should build a new home as opposed to buying an existing home. It’s a good question so when weighing up the pros and cons there are a few important issues to be considered. Firstly, new homes are built to the latest building standards and codes. That’s extremely important in a cyclonic region. Technology, skills and construction are constantly changing and building a new home is bringing us in line with what is currently expected of the market. New homes will include energy efficient products and designs; water and power saving devices; low maintenance materials; modern technology; easy clean fittings and lots and lots of choices of products and inclusions. When you build a new home you can put your own stamp of individuality in your choice of colours of walls, kitchens, floors, windows; whether it is a soft neutral scheme or something a little more vibrant that reflects your personality. You can create personal spaces in the design for you and your family rather than living with someone else’s lifestyle choice. The design can take
into account the growing family and their needs further down the track.
This is one of the best things about building a new home!! In the current market there’s not much difference in the cost of building a new home and the cost buying an existing home. Sometimes the older, worn out elements of an existing home can be replaced with newer, modern, up to date and efficient products. Some older homes will have materials in their construction that have now been classed as dangerous, such as asbestos or lead base paint. If you disturb the products by renovating then they may be harmful to you and your family. Old electrical wiring can be extremely dangerous if not handled correctly. All of this will be an extra cost on the purchase of the existing home that needs to be budgeted for. Consider a building renovation or extension to the home but definitely talk to an experienced builder that can competently carry out this type of work.
New homes will come with a warranty and a structural guarantee which you don’t get with an older home. If you regularly clean and look after your new home there will be less time and money spent on maintaining or replacing items that are old and worn out. That means more time for leisure and relaxing with the family. So if you’re looking for a home that is personalised to you, full of up to date technology and features and is using efficient building methods then building a new home is for you.

Decorating with
Sophie
Pedersen Dare to dream!
There are so very many beautiful things out there in the world of interiors, where do you start with decorating? What do you ideally want to achieve? Dare to dream! Make yourself a mood board on Pinterest or just on paper. Don’t try and take everything from these images, just an overall feeling and maybe one brilliant idea. Next get to de-cluttering the room, even if just mentally, working out what you really need to get rid of and anything you have to keep. Aside from the loose furniture, what are you left with and how can it be changed to achieve your vision? In practical terms the walls and ceilings can almost always be painted, but you’re probably stuck with the flooring, windows and doors for the time being. Allow yourself some serious time and energy to put into finding your perfect new pieces of furniture, light fittings, textiles and decorations. Try to think back to the finishes and colours you have always loved, not just this year, and Google these words along with ‘furniture’ or ‘room’ to open a window upon what is out there. For me it has been gold, silver and the colour green that have endured since childhood. It may be light timbers and creamy colours or wrought iron and blue velvet that makes your heart beat faster. Contrast is the spice of interior design, whether achieved through textures, colours or scale it can make all the difference between dull and fabulous in just a few elements. If you have a
57
contemporary monochrome house, build contrast and warmth in the interiors through timbers, textured rugs and textiles, bold artworks and a few random pieces of old furniture. Conversely if you have a more ornate or older home with myriad finishes and colours, minimalist furnishings and a restrained colour scheme help to bring order and harmony. Once you’ve sorted out the new pieces you’d like, the existing things to re-use and spent 4 hours discussing which shade of white to paint the walls, the art is in pulling it all together. Look for colours or materials in common or that feature in the pieces you’ve chosen. For example, use bright silver frames around your pictures to compliment the polished steel sofa legs and add a lamp with polished steel detailing, or match the colours in the artwork with colours in the cushions. Subtlety is the key here though! Add little side tables, ottomans, lamps and new light fittings for interest and to add balance or complexity to the palette. But most of all have some fun. Go the oversize palm leaf wallpaper and the pink velvet sofa – because you can.

The Local Solution Servicing Cairns for over 35 years, BCS Body Corporate Services are firmly established as a market leader in body corporate and community titles management.
Covering properties from Cardwell to Weipa and including Thursday Island, BCS Cairns employs 18 staff, including 11 body corporate managers, as well as being the only body corporate management company to have a dedicated branch in Port Douglas. According to Cairns Branch Manager Lorraine Murray, having a local team as the body corporate management ensures that the issues experienced by lot owners in the tropics are understood “We are industry leaders regarding disaster management, with extensive hands on experience handling insurance claims,” says Lorraine. In response to the well publicised Insurance crisis in North Queensland, BCS has used it’s market leading position to gain access to an Insurance product exclusive to BCS clients that is proving to be extremely competitive in the highly volatile North Queensland Insurance market. To protect the interests of schemes under their management, BCS also carries $20 million in professional indemnity insurance. “It’s about having peace of mind for what may be a significant asset,” says Lorraine.

“It makes sense to use BCS because we are financially strong and stable, just what you would expect from a company that has been in the industry for over 40 years,” she adds. Backed by its parent company PICA (Prudent Investment Company of Australia Pty Ltd), BCS has a network of 27 offices around the country. It is this backing that enables a continuity of service for Cairns property owners. “This is particularly relevant to our ability to manage any local disasters as there are always other resources within the business who can step in to assist,” says Lorraine.

Gardening
Dry
tropical plants
with Matt Mitchley
If the idea of having a lush tropical garden without the need for endless watering, trimming and removing old foliage sounds like your thing, then maybe you might like to enter the wonderful world of dry tropical plants. These plants live quite happily with very little water and ongoing maintenance.
Most of these plants come from areas around the world that have a similar climate to ours: A wet tropical season and a good amount of dry time. Most people arriving into Cairns think they have landed in a tropical paradise, and of course they have, with the opportunity to grow all the wonderful tropical plants the world has to offer. Wet tropical plants like the Lipstick Palm and Heliconias grow perfectly well up here, though without a good irrigation system, mulch and fertilisers, these plants do not fair too well in our dry season. Without a good amount of water, they shed leaves and their foliage burns in our sun. It is always worth noting the habitat of the species you wish the use: Lipstick Palms live in swamp forests! Dry tropic plants on the other hand fair very well our dry season. They do not lose their foliage and their trunks and roots are designed to store water. Your garden doesn’t have to look like a desert either! Many dry tropical plants have lush green leaves and the architectural
62

value of their stems and armoured foliage make them a very interesting addition to most gardens. There are a few trade secrets in using these plants though. They must not get wet feet, so they require good, free draining soil. This can be achieved by raising a garden bed to ensure water cannot sit for too long on their roots. Also, almost all dry tropic plants require good air movement around their leaves and full sunlight. Again, researching the habitat of the species you wish to use will help you determine their requirements. So why don’t you try a few of these easy care, architecturally pleasing beauties around your home. But a word of warning: Almost all of them come with spikes!

‘does anyone else know, or care?’ M A R K M AT T H E W S / / C H I E F E X E C U T I V E / / A D VA N C E C A I R N S
‘Ya gotta shout it from the rooftops!’ if you want your message heard. In this world of constant information overload, you have to make a big noise to stand out from others. This might seem so obvious. Often so obvious is that we know what we have in a product or service and how perfect it might be. But the real question is ‘does anyone else know, or care?’ In this issue of Cairns Life you will see a feature on the Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement Tender for Cairns. This is a bid for the build and maintenance of new ships for Pacific Island countries, together with the training of crew. For the next 30 years! Around 21 boats, billions of dollars of direct and indirect income – I could give you lots of numbers that look important. But it’s the project that is important. The bid team have worked hard to ensure a highly competitive bid. You may have seen or heard media supporting the bid. And there has been consistent engagement with State and Federal elected representatives on the critical importance of the bid for Cairns, and the economic benefit that will flow from winning the bid.
Should we win this bid, the only one in Queensland and the only one in Northern Australia, there will be a real and long lasting economic stimulus to our marine and allied industries. There will be new jobs. There will be new businesses. And there will be another ‘spring in the step’ of Cairns. But if we lose the bid, we will not only lose jobs, but lose another opportunity for our region to grow and prosper. There’s a lot riding on this. What has not been heard is the call from the community. The call from the tradie whose future depends on an industry’s growth. The call from the supplier who will benefit from the tender. The call from the trainer who will put the crews through their paces. It gets right down to the call from the coffee van guy who sits outside the shipyard every morning. It all counts. So what should I do, you might ask? Write to your Federal elected representatives in the House of Representatives and Senate. Yes write. Sorry, but if you write, it gets logged and is seen with more weight than an email. But if that’s all too hard, pls send an email at least.
64
CairnsLife
Write to the Prime Minister. Write to the Defence Minister. Write to the Queensland Premier. Write to anyone in Parliament who you think might care. Or at the very least email. But please do something to show you care. It’s the quality and quantity of effort and advocacy to our elected representatives that can make a difference. When the calls are heard from every rooftop, when the billboards and posters send a message of importance, when social media is tweeted, retweeted, shared, snapped and posted; that our elected representatives know that its not just a few lone voices running the campaign.
Don’t just shout it from the rooftops, make it front and centre of conversations everywhere. Often.
parental conflict ‘and they all lived happily ever after” says Dad to his little princess closing her favourite story book “Goodnight sweetheart, see you in the morning” ‘night Daddy – I love you”. Mum kisses her darling boy as she tucks him into bed ‘love you darling boy – see you in the morning’ ‘love you Mummy – see you in the morning’ – next morning Daddy’s little princess pulls the blankets over her head and tells Daddy quite forcefully what she thinks of his early mornings and mummy’s darling boy slings his back pack over his shoulder, grabs an apple and grunts on his way out the door. Whaaaa? Last night little princess and darling boy, this morning grumpy uncommunicative teenagers? Well to the parents at any rate, change happened at that pace.
Adolescence is tough on kids and tougher on parents from an intact household. Its even tougher when parenting is from separate homes Following family breakdown , teenagers need the same as they needed before. A secure emotional base. More than one in 3 teenagers surveyed by the Australian Institute of Family Studies did not want to be asked to make major decisions –about where they lived - in most cases, this was because they wanted to avoid having to “choose” between parents. The study also found that teenagers sought flexibility in their arrangements, being able to move between households on their own schedules. Teenagers living in equal care arrangements reported the greatest ease in being able to see each parent and manage this with their myriad other commitments such as doing schoolwork, playing sport and seeing their friends. Managing parental conflict caused immense stress for the surveyed teenagers. Teenagers are very aware of conflict between their parents just as do younger children, and they manage better when parents are able to minimise conflict. Teenagers tend not to blame themselves for the conflict as do younger children but they tend to leave home earlier than their friends from low conflict homes. The message for separated parents of adolescents is the same as for parents of younger children – keep the conflict low and importantly keep the children out of communications between you and your ex. Always
Direct parental communication whenever possible is the answer, because even an apparently harmless message can cause stress for the teenager Shielding your teenager from stress allows him/her to focus on their school work, their friends and their sports and other activities. Communicating with teenagers is learning a whole new language [“Dad you are such a dinosaur” – “Oh Mum – you are so annoying” – what happened to being Daddy’s princess and Mummy’s darling boy?] Many parents are finding email a clearer way of getting the messages to the other parent adn some use parenting web sites, offering a secure site where emails can be tracked on kept on topic. The emails can be printed but cannot be changed using one of these sites. Establishing a direct line of communication with the other parent is key, because your ex is not their ex and you wouldn’t want to be uncool now, would you?
Don’t rely on your teenager to be the messenger. Teenagers get really stressed by this and even more stressed at the frustration of the other if the message goes astray or the answer is not what the parent wanted to hear. Teenagers who have the highest risk for mental problems are those asked to be the communication channel between the parents, and the stress they feel at being the communication channel adds a burden they often find too much to bear. 1 2

DRINKING WITH U2:
How my interview
INITIATIVE paid off
with Eva Grabner
This title is probably a bit of a no-brainer to 99% of us, but in my line of work the amount of times I speak with a candidate after they have had a job interview and hear how they missed an opportunity to stand out from the others.
Speaking recently to a younger candidate got me thinking back to when I had my first ‘proper’ job interview. This interview was with a five star hotel on the outskirts of Dublin city in a very wealthy area. The boys from U2, Chris DeBurgh and Def Leppard all lived locally and frequented the hotel. I really wanted this job. It was as ‘Secretary to the General Manager’ (yes, back then we were ‘Secretaries and not PA’s) Needless to say I was a very nervous 18 year old and wore my best red suit. On arrival I was met by the Personnel Manager who interviewed me. We had a general chat about my experience (very little) and my career aspirations (vague), then finished off with a typing test. Now this was done on a state of the art (wait for it) electric typewriter!!! Yes, we didn’t have computers back then either. So, here I am, sitting at the table typing away to my heart’s content when the Personnel Manager is ‘called away’. I finished the piece she had shown me and looked underneath the paper. There was another assignment there. I waited a minute, she didn’t return, so I decided to just do it. She returned a few minutes later whereupon I proudly showed her my work. She seemed a little surprised that I had also completed the second stage of the typing test but didn’t say anything. Off I went to await the outcome.
66
A few days later I received a call to offer me the job. I was so excited. I ended up staying there for two years. I loved that job and still have friends from those days. Eventually I found out that there was another applicant for the job. She was also very good. I was told that my point of difference was that when I saw another test, I used my initiative and completed it without being asked. Now, I’m not asking you to just pick up the interviewer’s pages and start reading or typing them, but to prepare yourself well before an interview. What is your point of difference? Have one, find one, make one. It could be that small piece of extra preparation that differentiates you from the other applicants.

Our Far North Queensland region is in the process of springing back to life with a large list of projects, investments and proposals valued at more than $21.5 billion. One of the first big projects to kick off, is the $50 million Cairns Aquarium which will announce by the end of October the name of the main contractor for the $37 million turnkey contract for the main commercialisation component of Australia’s first public aquarium in 17 years.
once the facility is operational. Significant job retention will also occur for local Cairns based suppliers.
The Cairns region is now officially in the ‘growth’ phase of the economic clock. The latest Cairns Chamber of Commerce Major Projects & Investments list certainly reinforces this position with an ever-growing list of projects and investments adding to the growth potential of our region valued above $5 million in value.
“Local businesses will be key to delivering the works packages, which include the building of a multi-million litre great barrier reef habitat, a gulf savannah flooded billabong exhibit, outer and ribbon reef exhibits, underwater viewing tunnels, live mangrove boardwalks and up to 70 key living exhibits housing over 15,000 endemic fish, animals and plants,” said Daniel Leipnik, Cairns Aquarium, Chief Executive Officer and Founder
‘The value of the project investments that are either currently under construction or proposed across FNQ , is: $21.543 billion (excluding projects that are proposed but due to commercially sensitivity or confidential nature, aren’t included) said Deb Hancock, CEO Cairns Chamber of Commerce. ‘These projects and investments are expected to create more than 15,790 jobs during construction and more than 37,000 jobs operationally,’ said Deb Hancock. One of the projects on our list that is about to kick off is the Cairns Aquarium. The construction of the Cairns Aquarium will involve the development and pre-commercialisation of a significant fisheries science and state of the art reef research facility, which is expected to attract over 500,000 visitors per year and involve 30 research and educational organisations. Over 250 construction jobs, 100 design and engineering positions, 50 preoperational staff positions and 80 full time jobs will be created
CairnsLife
There will be substantial economic benefits for our local community with engagement of local industry providers to complete the 7,500 square metre, three-level facility, which will display 11 diverse wet and dry tropics zones, that are represented through a 2.5 hour immersive and life-like visitor journey.
‘After $4 million of initial development investment, four years of full time planning work and the involvement of over 120 full time staff at twenty firms, all levels of Government, and dedicated Aquarium and research staff, we look forward to facilitating a successful project programme with the main contractor and the wider community, to deliver an incredible new iconic CBD attraction, which will showcase the flora and fauna that Australia’s Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park are renowned for.’ The CBD site has been cleared and prepared for piling works. Engineering and procurement components have recently commenced, along with site preparation and civil works. Project completion is January 2017. A massive crane will be placed on site by December 2015, which will be the first of many to come.

festive season The
your success all wrapped up.
It’s that time of year, it might not feel like it, but it is - Woolies have had mince pies in for months; tinsel and Christmas trees adorn the shopping aisles. So the question for you is are you feeling financially festive? No? Not Sure? It’s only a Christmas party! ...Think again! First off, get out of the mindset that it’s “just a Christmas party”. What it is, is the perception of your company in the eyes of your employees. The question isn’t can you afford to have one, it’s more like can you afford not to. Christmas parties give you the opportunity to thank your team or your staff for what they have achieved and to reflect over the previous year. They give you the chance to do this without showing favouritism through individual awards and the festive part can provide an inclusive and perfect platform for staff to bond in or preferably out of office environment. Company culture doesn’t just happen, it’s a reflection of how valued each employee feels within your organisation. A good and well organised Christmas party is a great way to show your gratitude and provide a positive launch for the business year ahead. Good organisation, a proper venue and, most likely, a decent budget can enthuse, smooth and galvanise a workforce all at the same time. In fact the better the event the less likely it is to end in photocopier debauchery or loss of dignity through over indulgence. A well executed party will be a talking point for staff long after it is over. This definitely means good planning and organisation are absolutely key. If you are under-resourced, or just plain busy get some professional help, most hotels and venues will have a functions co-ordinator who will be well versed in what is required, and very often will be able to help with all aspects of creating a good party. Make your event memorable for all the right reasons. In these pages we feature some of the best places in and around to have your 2015 celebration. Have fun, it’s Christmas, well nearly!

Bushfire SET THE FESTIVE SEASON ALIGHT Christmas is coming and once again locals are exploring unique and interesting venues to celebrate the festive season. Stepping up to the plate, the Bushfire Flame Grill will now open its doors for lunch on 4th, 11th and 18th of December. A popular dinner restaurant, this is the first time that Bushfire will open its doors to the lunchtime crowd. ‘Friday and Saturday nights leading up to Christmas are heavily booked, sometimes months in advance’ says restaurant manager, Lynnette Kerrigan. ‘Bushfire is perfect for group dining due to the share platters and interactive service style. We didn’t want people to miss out so adding some lunch options seemed like an obvious solution.’ Located in the iconic Pacific Hotel Cairns on the Esplanade, Bushfire Flame Grill offers a truly unique “all you can eat” Brazilian-inspired, Aussie barbecue. Metre long skewers of succulent Australian beef, pork, lamb and chicken are seasoned, marinated and slowly roasted on the churrasco grill. Waiters circulate slicing sizzling meats directly to each diner’s plate. Warm sugar & cinnamon encrusted pineapple and housemade desserts including Spanish churros with chocolate chilli sauce, complete the experience. In keeping with the theme of innovative catering and exceptional service, the Pacific Hotel Cairns also houses a range of freshly refurbished function spaces ideal for weddings, celebration dinners, Christmas parties and cocktail functions. At the heart of the Pacific Conference and Events Centre is the unique Poolside Terrace, a contemporary outdoor space overlooking the Esplanade. ‘This year has seen a lot of companies switching from the traditional seated staff Christmas party to a more informal standing cocktail style function so the Poolside Terrace has been in high demand’ says Jo Neill, business development manager at the Pacific Hotel. Complementing the function spaces is a team of talented chefs lead by executive chef Ben McCarthy. ‘Above all, we constantly strive to provide exceptional service’ says Jo ‘much of our business is built on referrals and repeat clients so our goal is to exceed guests’ expectations each and every time.’ The Pacific Hotel has earned an enviable reputation for high standards of cuisine and hospitality, built on over 30 years of functions and catering excellence. In addition to operating Bushfire Flame Grill, and the Pacific Conference and Events Centre the hotel’s off-site division, Tropical Catering & Events, has catered many large scale signature events, at unique venues in and around Cairns.

Beer Review
Zythology {zith-owl-oh-gee}
the study of beer and beer making, including the role particular ingredients play in the brewing process Over 100 microbreweries exist in Australia with many more popping up every month. And whilst craft beer can only account for approximately 2% of the Australian beer market, the Australian craft beer movement over the past two years has experienced a surge in popularity and rapid growth. Savvy bottle shops and restaurants are jumping on board with this revolution and including craft beers as part of their product lists to satisfy this new wave of beer drinkers.
Feast Beer Competition was on last month and there was a good turn up of competition. They ran three categories light colour beer, dark colour beer and speciality beer. This year the competition saw the event diversify a little with offerings of the home brews to the public in an informal education/tasting area. It was great to taste such a high calibre of beers. The specialty beer category was quite an interesting one with many different and unique flavour combinations on offer!
Most of these microbrewery owners and head brewers started off in their backyard sheds or garages experimenting with flavours and building on their recipes to perfect the taste. Watching these microbreweries pop up I am in awe of their almost overnight success and stardom. I recommend you check out the Green Beacon and Stone & Wood.
If you are interested in making your own Home Brew just in time for Christmas, pop on down to the guys at Marlin Coast Home Brew. They are a wealth of knowledge and can steer you in the right direction. YouTube is also handy with videos on what to do and what to avoid (always great for a laugh). There are many books and magazines available now that are quite interesting and are perfect for the beer enthusiast. I have over 50 beer books (and am still on the hunt for more interesting beer books!), if you search different book stores you can find some great books to feed your beer obsession.
For the home brewer who has mastered his beer, your mates love your new passion & are your no 1 beer tasters, you might start looking for the next challenge. There are many competitions nationally and locally you can enter your beer to take it to the next level. Locally the Palm Cove Reef

Wine Review
INE of the month MICHAEL RYAN BRANCH MANAGER AT MORGAN’S CAIRNS Photo By Nakia Morrison
Scarzello 2012 Langhe Nebbiolo I had a surprisingly heated argument with an Italian Sommelier last month. As usual it was an “old world” vs “new world “ debate with Alessandro. This time he was piling criticism on Australian red wine. The three main points were that Australian winemakers had no concept of terroir; made their red wines way too sweet and continually diluted their appellation integrity with ongoing expansion. These are serious charges, but as we looked through a portfolio of his favourite Italian wines, I began to understand what he was banging on about. With his second point at least. It is too easy to throw insults across the room on this matter when there is no evidence to support one argument over another. But when there is a suite of wonderful wines present to illuminate a position it is much more powerful. Generally, my hirsute Italian friend was right, his Sicilian Notte, Langhe Nebbiolo

and Tuscan Sangiovese were beautiful and powerful wines with a stamp of regional originality about them. In comparison, our fruit driven, high alcohol reds are sweet and many lack distinct regional characteristics – they are simply too fruit driven with sweet oak and sweet alcohol. Such wines can be made anywhere in the world and bear little or no relationship to their place of origin. Of course, Australia makes many world class reds that are not seductive and lascivious ‘fruit bombs’ but they are in the minority. Scarzello 2012 Langhe Nebbiolo. Dark brooding colour. Intense black and blue berries on the nose with big earth and mulch tones. Intense mouth feel with enormous fruit weight on the mid palate. Mouth watering dusty fine tannins complemented by tart, rich berry flavours. Clean crisp finish with wonderful persistence. Not a Barollo but a great illustration of the attributes and class of this world class winemaking region. I had to draw the line though when Alessandro started describing the salty taste of his 2012 Sicilian Notte due to the salt infused cooling winds of its maritime climate….fair go mate..

Perotta’s At The Gallery The deck at Perotta’s, situated a hop skip and a jump from the Cairns Lagoon, is one of the best vantage points to people watch. Even better than the people watching on offer are the Sweet Potato Hashbrowns on the menu. The servings aren’t huge but they certainly hit the spot. Perotta’s is a Cairns institution and is also home to one of the best Eggs Benny’s in town.
Le Crouton If you rocked into Le Crouton anytime after 10am on a weekend you might struggle to find much left on the menu due to its enormous popularity. Baguettes are the name of the game at this unassuming French bakery in a small complex in the quaint Cairns suburb of Freshwater. If you’re feeling a little naughty a fresh baked Cherry Danish on the side with your baguette never hurt anyone. If heaven was a food Le Crouton’s Smoked Salmon Baguette with Cucumber and Cream Cheese is what it would taste like.

At Reserved they swap the usual brekkie items like Eggs Benedict for something with a bit of a twist like Spicy Prawns, Beans, Polenta Cake and Poached Eggs with Coriander and Citrus Hollandaise and for the chilli fiends like myself there’s the Corn and Jalapeno Fritters with Cured Salmon, Spiced Labne, Coconut Oil Dressing and a Runny Egg - because life’s too short to eat boring food.

Ask about their cold drip coffee served in a wine glass.

Serving some of the best coffee in town it goes down a treat with brekkie dishes such as the Garlic Toast or the French Toast with Banana, Coconut Jam and Coconut Ice Cream. It turns out Rehab isn’t just somewhere that your (or my) alcoholic ex boyfriend needs to check in.
The Lillipad Cafe Cairns locals have a love/hate relationship with the Lillipad, as its so fondly referred. This cafe is one of the best cafes in Cairns for a big dirty breakfast but because of it’s enormous serves and cheap as chips menu items it can get very busy on the weekend. Don’t let that deter you from going to Lillipad and ordering the Brekky Burrito filled with chorizo, bacon, cheese, potato and huervos rancheros to cure your hangover and tie you over till dinner.

Yes Chef
Nick Holloway Chef Nick Holloway and business partner Jason Rowbottom were “just kids with big dreams” when they opened Nu Nu restaurant in 2004.
It’s these things that I try and capture with our menu.
Now rated by The Australian as one of the Hot 50 Restaurants of 2015, the Palm Cove establishment has received national accolade for its eclectic and innovative menu. According to Nick, Nu Nu aspires to be a distillation of everything that is Tropical North Queensland, and showcase the vivid, dramatic, colourful and delicious offerings of the region. “Ever since moving to Tropical North Queensland I have fallen head over heels in love with the place; from its landscape, to its luscious bounty and its warm community spirit,” he says.
Crediting his success as a chef to passion, persistence and perseverance, Nick also believes that clarity of vision and effective communication are essential…. and a smile goes a long way too.
Nu Nu’s shaved local heart of palm honeydew melon, pickled prawns and chilli salad Ingredients 8 jumbo tiger prawns (uncooked) 8 purple shallots, peeled fresh heart of palm honeydew melon 1 cup, loosely packed thai basil leaves 0.5 small green chilli, finely sliced 2 tsp shiso leaves a few drops of fish sauce (3 crab brand) a pinch of mossman raw sugar a squeeze of lime juice NB. allow approximately 8 shaves of each palm heart and honeydew melon per person. Remove the heads from the prawns and put aside. Peel the prawns, leaving the tail on, and trim down the back to remove the bowel.
Blanch the prawns in rolling salted water until barely cooked and then leave to cool at room temperature. Once sufficiently rested place the prawns in the marinade and refrigerate until needed.
Simmer the peeled shallots in 250ml of the finished ajad until just tender. Remove from the heat and allow the shallots tocool in the liquid. Store the pickled shallots in the refrigerator until needed.
Ajad 450ml thai white vinegar 600ml water 310 gm castor sugar 2 coriander roots, washed and scraped 2 slices of ginger 1 piece mandarin peel 0.5 head pickled garlic and some of its juice (sold in jars and readily available in asian supermarkets) 1 kaffir lime leaf
Using a peeler, finely shave the palm heart lengthways into a non-reactive bowl and sprinkle with lime juice.
Prawn Marinade 200 ml water 50 ml white vinegar 20 gm white sugar Mix together and warm to dissolve sugar. Allow to cool before using.
Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to the boil, turn down and simmer for 1– 2 more minutes. Allow to cool before refrigerating, it will last forever.
Very gently lift and tickle the salad ingredients and taste for seasoning, it should taste delicate and balanced. Carefully pile onto plates and scatter over the shiso.

Next year’s jazz programming is special – it marks 10 years of the Jazz Up North Series, which is focused on bringing the best contemporary and traditional acts for the genre to the North. “We have you, the audience, to thank for that,” says Tanks Arts Centre programmer Roz Pappalardo about reaching the 10-year milestone. “Every player who walks through those Tank 5 wrought iron doors, from sound check to the last note of the night, is captivated by the sound, the lights and most importantly, YOU, their rapt audience. You are the reason they come back to the Tanks and why they tell their jazz compatriots across Australia of the secret of the Tanks. I am excited to continue to bring you a bevy of legends, emerging and established, as we move into the next ten years. Make sure you continue to come along with us!” Across the years there have been some incredible, sold-out performances as part of the Jazz Up North Series and the 2016 program looks set to continue that tradition in its 10th year. Kicking off the programming on Friday 15 April is the incomparable Kate Ceberano. Much awarded and much loved, Kate is considered a treasure on the national music scene and has been defying genres for the past four decades. This will be an unforgettable sparkling performance that is guaranteed to sell out well in advance.

One of the most highly anticipated shows for the series is that of Harry James Angus from The Cat Empire on Friday 26 August. If you have seen one of his solo performances you will already be familiar with his stories of buried bones, murderous stove cooks, sentimental corporate bankers and mystical cricket players. This show promises to be that and much more and is set to sell-out. Steve Clisby, who is no stranger to performing at Tanks and is now a household name, heads back to the North on Friday 9 September. He was the best kept secret in Australia until his appearance on The Voice last year where he captivated audience with his soulful voice. Wrapping up the program is George Washingmachine on Friday 21 October. From classical violin to rhythm and blues, and from musical theatre to Shakespeare, his talent knows no bounds. He will be performing with gypsy jazz ensemble Feel the Manouche. The Jazz Up North Series subscription is on sale now. Visit www.tanksartscentre.com for more information.

A MUST DO FOR
THE BIGGEST ADVANCE IN IMPROVING
MOVEMBER:
PROSTATE CANCER DIAGNOSIS
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia and the third most common cause of cancer death in men. More than 3000 men die of prostate cancer in Australia every year; almost twice as many as Breast Cancer. Until now, a blood test called PSA (prostate specific antigen) and a digital rectal examination were the main ways of detecting prostate cancer. ‘Many men are then sent for a transrectal ultrasound biopsy (TRUS)’, said Dr Daynes, radiologist at Cairns Radiology. An ultrasound probe is inserted rectally to identify the prostate gland. A small needle then passes through the ultrasound probe to collect small samples of the prostate gland. Because it is difficult to clearly visualise where the cancer is located, usually 12 needle samples are taken, sometime more. The procedure is usually performed under a local anaesthetic with sedation with some patients requiring a night in hospital. Until recently, this was the only method available to make a diagnosis of prostate cancer.
ultrasound guided method. This has major advantages for patients in reducing discomfort, bleeding and risk of infection. Multi parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging is done on a special 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner along with specific software and a specialty biopsy robot that is used to obtain extremely accurate biopsies of the prostate. All of this equipment is fully owned and operated by Cairns Radiology. CAIRNS RADIOLOGY, located at 121 Sheridan Street, Cairns is one of three international Centres of Excellence for Prostate Cancer in Australia that provide such a service, leading the way for better detection of prostate cancer. No longer is there the need to travel south for the service. Medicare currently does not cover prostate screening under MRI. As a special promotion for MOVEMBER, the cost for the exam at Cairns Radiology is $230. That’s a 50% discount from the normal fee. ‘We’re hoping more men will have their prostate screened’ said Dr Daynes, ‘it’s such an important test for men.’
NO MORE! Over the past few years there have been major advances in the detection of prostate cancer, in particular the multi parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) that examines the structure and function of the gland.
A locally owned and operated practice, CAIRNS RADIOLOGY continues its commitment to providing high quality care to the people of Cairns and surrounding areas. ‘This is our focus’, says Robin Gordon, C.E.O. and one that is ongoing.
‘mpMRI allows the radiologist to see the possible cancer’, say Dr Daynes, ‘this means far fewer needles up your rectum as you can see the needle going directly into the area of maximum concern’. Only one or two needles are generally needed with mpMRI instead of possibly 12 or more with the traditional
Cairns Radiology provides all MRI services along with general and dental x-ray, ultrasound and high definition FLASH CT, the fastest, most precise and one of the lowest dose scanners available on the market today. Call 4051 9729 to schedule an appointment.

MOVEMBER Every year since 2003 you may have noticed men growing a bit of fuzz on their upper lips. This is to raise awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues in men. Movember started in Melbourne and has spread to become a global phenomenon. Over $580million has been raised world wide through sponsorship of this event. Nearly everyone knows someone with prostate cancer. It is the most common cancer diagnosed in men. The key to treatment is early diagnosis and that can be assisted by requesting a blood test called prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostate examination (digital rectal examination or DRE) where a gloved finger is inserted in the bottom to check for abnormalities. The PSA test measures a substance which is made in the prostate and is found in the blood stream. Not all rises in PSA are because of cancer. Some may be from infection or other reasons. If there is suspicion, the diagnosis may then be assisted by the patient undergoing a prostate MRI. Cairns has one of three MRI machines in Australia with the associated ProCAD software that improves the method of cancer detection. An MRI involves the patient lying still on his back for 30 minutes. Over 80% of the men having this scan will not have findings suspicious for an intermediate or high grade prostate cancer. This means that random biopsies of the prostate are a thing of the past. Only if a suspicious area is seen on the MRI, will biopsies be required to confirm it. Only two biopsy specimens are usually needed compared with up to 30-40 random samples sometimes performed. Testicular cancer is a disease of young men and occurs in the 15-45 age group. It is usually found
when a lump is detected in the testicle either incidentally or it being noticed after a knock to the testicle. Testicle cancers are usually not painful. Diagnosis is often assisted by ultrasound and blood tests which may show raised tumour markers. These are substances made by tumours which leak in to the blood stream where they can be measured. The good news is that around 97% of patients will live a normal lifespan with surgical removal when a prosthesis is usually inserted to give a normal appearance. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy is sometimes also needed. Mental health problems are not always complained about by a large number of men. It seems to be considered as “weak” or “un-manly”. However, in recent times a number of high profile men have admitted to having various types of mental illness. Their courage in this respect should be admired and the benefit of their examples is to be praised and respected. Of course, this usually only comes about after quite a period of time.

With Mishka we needed to make a drastic change to the Colour as the golden blonde was too light and the wrong tone for her. We wanted to focus on improving the Condition of the hair and selecting tones to complement Mishka’s skin tone and eye colour. We foiled out plenty of the blonde to keep a light feel on the ends of the hair with infusing a PH Balance and a customised intense Protein and Moisture treatment, whist we continued with the colouring process. This dramatically improved the condition of the blonde that we kept, then we darkened and blended a soft Nutty Dark Blonde/ Light Brown through the roots and other areas of the hair. The amazing transformation with adjusting the colour and tones, and of course the condition of the hair is incredible. This is an on Trend Colour all over the globe at the moment the “BRONDE”
MAKE UP ARTISTRY With Mishka’s Make-up we wanted to enhance and showcase her amazing eyes and keep it still quite natural as Mishka does not wear much make-up. We started by Moisturising, Priming and evening out the skin tone, then we enhanced with soft buff mineral powder, opened up the eyes with some colour and lashings of mascara with a pop of liner. Then a splash of blush and a soft rose gloss to finish.

draw their inspiration from many different things and not just the discipline that they are within. I obviously watch other magicians like David Copperfield or Penn and Teller, and I admire them and their work, but as far as my magic tricks go I try and get inspiration from other avenues such as comedians or Broadway productions - various things that allow my show to be a bit unique and different to your standard typical magic show. What motivated you to bring your show to Cairns? Having been overseas for the last few years I really wanted to come back to Australia. I don’t think there is much of this sort of thing available to Australian audiences apart from what they see on TV, so it was more just about coming back and bringing something a little different. What has been your favourite thing to do here? The last few days I’ve been doing a lot of jogs on the Red Arrow trail, so most mornings people will find me there. I also like sunbaking by the lagoon, just kicking back and relaxing. Sadly I haven’t had much chance to do anything else yet! If you could wave your magic wand and change one thing about Cairns, what would it be? It would probably be to make the locals realize what a beautiful place they live in. A lot of people think Cairns is a pretty quiet town, but it’s paradise. It’s such a gorgeous place and people from all over the world come to visit, but you get to live here. That’s pretty cool. What was your most embarrassing moment on stage? About three months ago I was in China and I was onstage when my pants ripped from the bottom of my fly right down to my ankle all the way around. Everything from below my waist was clearly on show! The show must go on, so I had a few laughs about it but I couldn’t wait to get off stage and cover up.
