LIFE In Your Opinion

“In your opinion, should we care about the upcoming US election and why/why not?” DARREN REED Principal & Licensee REED REALTY

“I care due to the fact that if a total buffoon ends up president of the US (as has happened in the past) this could trigger some very unpleasant world-wide issues. We are a global community and intrinsically linked to both Europe and the US. I have friends in the US so see a lot of stuff on social media. I understand how most people have zero interest in politics either here or overseas as it’s generally

extremely irritating with either no action or mind-boggling decisions being made – it’s frustrating and embarrassing. The US selection process drags on for over a year so and does get dull after a while. God forbid Trump gets in – that could be disastrous. If the US goes under they will drag us down with them one way or another. She’s nowhere near perfect but is the less of two evils – GO HILLARY!”

SCOTT BURNESS

Principal & Wealth Manager

YELLOW BRICK ROAD WEALTH MANAGEMENT

Land of the Free and Home of the Brave - more like Land of Never-ending Insults and Home of Stupidity. I see the following as undeniable: Trump’s a successful businessman regardless of his debated net worth. He has given a voice to many Americans, and exposed much the US does want to debate, which has struck a chord with many citizens. As appalling to many he may be, according to a CNN Poll, 43 per cent versus 45 per cent for Hillary. A Trump win means what to Australia: Economically - Trump says: “45 per cent

tariff on imported Chinese goods”. China and US are our biggest and third-biggest two-way trade partners; we don’t need to be choosing sides!! Militarily and culturally: Trumps says: “Remove US troops from Asia Pacific, lockout Muslims from the US”. China could advance further into South China Sea, Australia could be drawn into possible conflict with alongside its allies, South Korea or Japan. Australia deals with enough conflict in relation to Muslims, we need to focus on internal resolutions not deal with more external more tension.

On top of the propaganda and comical aspect of the election, there are some serious issues that could affect the way other countries do business with the United States. Even though we do not live in America, we are all at risk of being affected negatively if the wrong person is elected. I’m not a political person nor do I follow politics on a regular basis, but it

scares me to think what the future holds for the world after the election. When elected, the person in charge will have the authority to start a war at the drop of a hat, increase or decrease taxes for businesses which sell to companies all over the world. Whether we like it or not we will all be affected in one way or another on November 8th.

WELL THAT’S JUST AWKWARD GR U M P Y O L D M AN D ANN Y B E T ROS

Having just ended numerous weeks of parties, engagements and the racing carnivals I’ve noted the way that the female species interact with each other when it comes to dress sense and getting that presentation right on the day. Women don’t seem to have any trouble checking each other out with or without clothes on and commenting on each other’s features and outfits. Girls have no problem adjusting some other girl’s boobs or dress and complimenting on a good arse, a set of legs or figure etc etc. Blokes don’t do that. We don’t check each other out or comment positively. We just put shit on each other, especially any “pretty boys” who know they’re good looking. It’s our right to bring them back to the pack and make us Mr Average feel better. No one has ever grabbed my arse and adjusted my underwear to make it look better or pushed my shirt around to highlight my pecks. We just don’t do that and we don’t look at each other naked -especially our bits. Women always go in pairs or groups to the toilets (still one of the great mysteries to me) but men want to be on their own and urinal behavior has certain rules. There’s the bloke that huddles into the corner to pee making sure of maximum block out from everyone’s view like he’s protecting his food in a school boarding house. Then there’s the “alpha hero” bloke who has to yabba through the whole pee trying to be funny and just hang it out for all to see. One golden rule is however that you never look at another man’s hanging gardens at the urinal- no way it’s just not on. So I’m at the races and Mother Nature calls and I step up to the spot to relieve

myself. Looking straight ahead, no talk, no pressure very relaxed. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye I see the guy step up next to me and then I get distracted by something completely “out of the box”. Still looking ahead I thought something’s not right here and out of that corner of my eye again it looked like that maybe there had been a terrible industrial accident and star picket has been flung through the wall, or perhaps the fig tree outside the toilet block had grown a massive branch into the toilet or maybe part of the ceiling had fallen down at the urinal. I had a brief look over and snapped my head straight ahead again in disbelief. This thing was attached to a human and was functioning. I mean I thought the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics was impressive but this was a whole new level. Maybe it was a man crossed with a horse I thought but no the rest of him looked normal. Perhaps it was a “gotcha” prank and I was about to be shown a hidden camera and laughed at, but nope. I quickly zipped and retreated out in a state of stunned disbelief. All of a sudden the Cairns Amateurs seemed very valid to me. I didn’t know whether to run away, hang around and applaud as he left or race over to the Cairns Post tent and get a reporter to do an interview. I had to relay the experience to my group and as you would expect the rest of day was spent incorporating puns such as furlongs, winning margins by a head or by one or two lengths. You know how blokes are!!

Max

O’HALLORAN Max O’Halloran insists there was nothing in his early years that hinted at a future career as a community leader. “Really?” I asked. Journos are like dentists; my intonation of that one word must have extracted both truth and roots. “Come to think of it, I was a prefect at school. And then of course I captained a lot of sporting teams,” he admits. “In 2012, when I ran for Division Seven, I had built a wonderful network in town and my sporting involvement opened a lot of doors,” Max says. Max was about nine years old when the family home in Irishtown, NW Tasmania, burned to the ground. Max vividly recalls the moment the frame of the house caved in when the fire was at its zenith. “It was shortly after Christmas, and I remember digging around in the ashes days later, hoping our Christmas presents had miraculously survived. “We lost everything. Community members collected money in a big blanket for us at sporting fixtures. “Maybe that also instilled an enduring sense of community in me,” says Max. “As a teenager, I was identified as a sports talent, and was lured off to the big smoke. In those days there

was no system in place for selecting prospective talent, and I consider myself very lucky to have been ‘spotted’ in our country town. “In Melbourne, I played for Carlton and Footscray in the VFL in the early Seventies. After five years I headed to Darwin with mates to get involved in the reconstruction after Cyclone Tracey. After a spell coaching Aussie Rules in Brisbane, Max and family moved up to Bramston Beach in 1977, where they ran Plantation Village. “In those days the road into Bramston was dirt. The Deeral nursery took our bookings and relayed them by HF radio, as there was no telephone,” Max recalls.

C a i r n s L i f e 11 M a g a z i n e

In 1978, I was working as a yardsman for Penpack when a storeman/driver went on leave, and I was asked to take on his role. On the road all day, I made wonderful, enduring friendships amongst businesses in town. “When the guy came off leave, the boss offered me a job as seafood buyer. I told him I knew very little about seafood, but he assured me I would learn quickly, adding that the job was mine on one condition: if I injured myself at footy, it would be instant dismissal. Soon afterwards, I broke my thumb at basketball,” Max laughs. “I needed that job, so I binned the plaster cast and went into work. I was soon in agony, and went to spill the beans to the boss. He wasn’t happy, but told me he’d give me six weeks in the office. I proved my worth over many years before moving on to a position with Markwell Fisheries. “Later, six fishermen approached me to market their product, and Tidal Seafoods was born. I spent the next 30 years selling their prawns. No contract existed, it was all based on the shake of a hand and mutual trust. Those six families remain great friends, and I became a voice for independent fishermen. “It’s been a good life, and now I’m getting the chance to repay Cairns,” says Max.

The Power of POSITIVE THINKING WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER

P H O T O B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H

“The Navy brought me to Cairns in 1998, kicking and screaming, but I fell in love with the place and a girl I met at the Sports Bar one night. It’s the perseverance I employed in wooing that reluctant beauty that has seen us fight our way back from the depths. Jason and Suzy Pickard are the embodiment of ‘The Secret’. We are masters of our own destiny. Jason won his girl, and the two bought a property in 2003, while Jason was still in the Navy. Suzy was marketing manager at one of Cairns’ major shopping centres. Things were going well, so they bought a house for Jason’s mum in Melbourne. “We started looking at businesses, and were shown a prospectus for Toyworld. We had equity, and it seemed a fantastic opportunity. We jumped into it with a business partner rather naïvely, not thinking things through properly, or understanding the hazards of business partnerships.

They decided to think about starting a family, but in 2007, during a family holiday, Suzy started suffering unbearable pain, and the following year underwent surgery for endometriosis; a temporary reprieve, as it turned out. The business partnership started to go sour. “The GFC was kicking in, putting tremendous strain on us all. Cairns consumers were tightening their belts, and we all dealt with the pressure in different ways,” says Suzy. After a long struggle to maintain the equilibrium, the couple had to call bankruptcy, and lost everything – a once thriving business, two houses, a block of land, two cars and a racehorse. Jason’s mother had to move from the house they had bought for her, and Jason

“At first the business went very well, with our first year seeing a $2.5m turnover. We bought another block of land and life was rosy,” says Jason. The young couple were very much a part of the Cairns social scene. With a share in a local racehorse, Jason and Suzy frequented the races, enjoying and supporting the smaller meets more than iconic events such as Cairns Cup and Amateurs.

“NO SILVER LININGS

sank into depression, hiding from the world and very briefly resorting to medication to try and alleviate the negativity that was overwhelming him. “I felt embarrassed, ashamed, a failure. We had nothing; it was a massive fall from grace. “The administrators went through everything in minute detail, it was so invasive. Attempting to drag myself back into life, I took work as a builder’s labourer. “I took a position in the toy section in a department store, and did really well there,

but if someone came in who knew me, I would hide out the back, ashamed,” admits Jason. Suzy was sent to Brisbane to undergo two more surgeries including a bowel resection to address her severe endometriosis. “Then my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and died in 2011, staying alive long enough to see us married after 10 years together, but not long enough to witness my falling pregnant after a five year journey, including multiple rounds of IVF. I was devastated. He was my hero”.”

Jason went back to the Navy Reservists in 2010 to supplement our income, as the RAN were finding it hard to keep up numbers. “We still had to have our salaries garnished, and I would avoid providing details if people asked about Toyworld. I parked my little old Corolla well away from work so no one could see it,” admits Jason. After Jaxon’s birth in 2012, effort was paying dividends. The family was cleared of bankruptcy and purchased a new home. Jason completed four diplomas and Certificate IV, and started working for a major waste management company, commenced a post graduate degree in Health & Safety, and was promoted to State Safety Manager for the company after just a year. In 2014, the couple built another home in Mt Sheridan, Suzy falling pregnant with twin girls the following year. This year saw the purchase of third Cairns investment property and a deposit on another. Suzy continues her corporate marketing career, whilst working on her own marketing consultancy business, Sitting in their beautiful modern home, the twins chirping contentedly, the cat purring and everyone smiling, Jason tells me they decided to share their story to encourage other people to learn from adversity, set achievable goals and take every opportunity to improve opportunities through education. “Losing everything didn’t destroy us, it made us stronger as a couple and a team,” says Jason.

Celebrating women and sisterhood with their extraordinary vocal ensemble, Women of AustraNesia are inviting audiences to share in their cultural songs at Tanks Arts Centre this December. The ensemble hopes to educate and cement their diverse cultural history in songbooks for the ages, preserving these important songs. The AustraNesia group have been gathering some of Cairns’ most talented Aboriginal, Torres Strait Island, Melanesian and Polynesian artists and often includes guest artists to further cross-cultural appreciation musically. Founder and director of all things choral, Rubina Kimiia, began AustraNesia with co-founder Will Kepa to provide a platform for showcasing harmony amidst diversity using song. The performers are given a voice using music in their preferred genre, and then present as a powerful choir sharing language and instrumentation laced with contemporary flavours. A branch of the main AustraNesia ensemble, Women of AustraNesia, debuted to celebrate International Women’s Day in 2014, which included a performance at Tanks Arts Centre. The group have since crafted their enormous sisterhood of talent from this initial foundation. As far back as time itself, women have always forged unspoken bonds; mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties and friends, these relationships share their own special communication. The upcoming performance at Tanks is an opportunity for the ensemble to showcase this branch of the choir in their official debut, releasing their album and accompanying songbook. “Everybody launches a CD – but a songbook too? That’s a cut above the norm,” says Rubina of the importance of the upcoming launch. “Women of AustraNesia have songs about women, by women, for women. We’re excited to share our stories through music!” Of the large amount of talent performing with the AustraNesia ensemble, Rubina aptly described the people in the regions the group represents as naturally gifted musically. She reflects that education on traditional notation for recording these cultural songs is not available to most, causing songs to be lost, diluted or changed over time. The songbook is important for cementing these songs as they were intended, designed to preserve them. The songbook will feature a profile of each artist, the heritage of their song and a profile on the community where the language used in their songs comes from with translation. “In a way, this honours our elders and reminds us of who we are and where we come from,” says Rubina. “Yet also at the same time, it helps us recognise how blessed we are to live where we live, celebrating the unique diversity of multi-cultural North Queensland.” AustraNesia shows are always family affairs with the performers inviting audiences in to their heritage and sharing a part of their personal history and song. There isn’t exact choreography but the performers and audiences find it difficult not to move, with simple but symbolic movements that accentuate the lyrical and cultural content of the songs. There is no doubt the Women of AustraNesia show at Tanks will be one to remember. “In one showing, you’ll be treated to how versatile AustraNesia really are – as individuals and as a collective,” says Rubina. Tickets are on sale now. The Women of AustraNesia perform at Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 3rd December 2016. For more information, please visit www.tanksartscentre.com

SOUL KITCHEN BAKERY & CAFE “WE OFFER CLEAN, ALLERGY-FRIENDLY FOOD WITH A CONSCIENCE.”

Shirley and Hugh Forster have run a successful wholesale gluten-free, vegan and allergy friendly bakery since 2013. In January this year they opened their funky cafe on Hoare Street, much to the delight of their many loyal customers. The reason they branched into the cafe was that they wanted somewhere they could eat that fulfilled their dietary requirements. Rather than being concerned about the ingredients, at Soul Kitchen all you need to worry about is what you’re in the mood to eat and drink! Shirley has been a vegan since her teenage years and has perfected (and being a cake fiend, I do not use this word lightly!) the art of glutenfree baking, while Hugh has also developed many different desserts and savouries of his own, helping to contribute to their eclectic menu. Soul Kitchen’s menu is ever changing as Hugh & Shirley are constantly experimenting with new ideas and flavours. Some of their staples include the All American Vegan burger, the raw burrito, a soup/stew of the day, pizza, and an assortment of exciting desserts such as their famous Soul brownies, pecan tarts, raw cakes, mudcake and chocolate cupcakes. Their vegan snickers bar is way better than the original, and their parfait will leave you speechless! 5/116 Hoare Street, Cairns OPENING HOURS Fri-Sun 10am-2pm

At last pregnant women in Cairns can breathe a sigh of relief now that they can buy stylish maternity clothes that are affordable, suit our tropical climate, are completely comfortable and, equally important, look chic and classy. The recent opening of the only specialised maternity clothing shop in Cairns, Bambino & Me at the Showgrounds Shopping Centre, is the answer to every pregnant woman’s dream of finding beautiful and trendy clothes to wear instead of settling for department-store garments. The shop is the brainstorm of local businesswoman and pregnant mother-of-four Candy Phillips, who was fed up trying to find decent maternity work wear and casual maternity clothes in Cairns. After a trip to Melbourne with her husband Eric, who was the one who actually found a maternity clothes shop that Candy loved, the idea to offer Cairns’ women a choice of maternity clothing was born.

“Having four children ourselves and another on the way, I found it very hard to buy maternity wear for the Cairns tropics,” said Candy, who runs the cabinetry business Cairns Custom Designs with her husband. “There weren’t any nice maternity dresses and work wear that I could buy here in Cairns while I was pregnant, which was frustrating. All I would buy was maxi-dresses, and they didn’t suit work or special events at all.”

A REAL CROWD PLEASER W OR D S BY J A N I E B AR TON

One of the most important aspects to a perfect wedding is making sure everyone enjoys themselves, which is why having the right entertainment is a key factor to making your big day unforgettable. The ideal way brides and grooms can ensure they and their guests have a memorable day is to hire the best. And the good news is Cairns is home to Queensland’s best wedding entertainer of 2016 – Tony George. Owner of Tony George Entertainment, Tony is the person everyone wants at their wedding. His talent at entertaining guests, his friendly and professional disposition and his ability to read a crowd so they have a fantastic time is what makes the awardwinning musician/entertainer in huge demand. That’s also why he won the Live Entertainment section at the recent prestigious 2016 Australian Bridal Industry Awards State Final, where he was also named runner-up in the Master of Ceremonies section. The highly sought-after musician is renowned for his flexibility in tailoring his playlist to match the bride and groom’s preferences. He is in demand as a solo

singer/guitarist during wedding ceremonies and pre-dinner drinks, creating the perfect background music. His team of talented musicians, who make up his three-piece, four-piece and all the way to seven-piece bands, easily get the party started and have everyone up on the dance floor for a night they’ll always remember. Not only is Tony a singer, guitarist, drummer and pianist, he’s also one of the best Master of Ceremonies, and he loves being a part of weddings. He has performed for celebrities like Lleyton Hewitt and former Prime Minister John Howard, and he is also in demand by world-wide companies like Ford Motor Company, Hyundai, Coco-Cola and the Commonwealth Bank for their conferences and corporate events, but he especially loves performing at weddings. “I love helping to make the most important day of the bride and groom’s life one they’ll always cherish,” he said. “It’s an honour for me to be a part of their special day.” Tony George Entertainment, 4039 0336 or 0412 952 551 www.tonygeorgeentertainment.com.au

The term ‘adrenal fatigue’ was established about 25 years ago to describe a specific kind of chronic tiredness many people experience. It can result from persistent mental, emotional or physical stress. It is a modern-day condition due to the high levels of long term stress many people endure in our demanding busy world. Cortisol is the most important hormone to help the body deal with stress; it is released during stressful periods in high levels. The adrenal glands can become overworked and are then unable to keep up with demand. As a result, the cortisol levels drop and stressful situations can’t be dealt with effectively by the body. Kinesiology can reinstate adrenal function by accessing and correcting imbalances using non-invasive techniques. It can find the physiological, emotional and mental factors contributing to adrenal fatigue. The body’s overall hormone levels will become more stable by restoring the adrenal’s ability to respond effectively to stress, restoring equilibrium and vibrant health.

AUDiOHEALTH – HELPING THE WORLD TO HEAR

AUDiOHEALTH provides innovative hearing solutions and have literally thousands of ‘ears’ of experience. The family tradition and innovation began in the early 1980’s with Sidney Bacon, Audiologist and the patriarch of the family. Sid’s approach was to bring the latest hearing devices to Australia with a focus on performance and aesthetics. The first cosmetically appealing hearing instrument was introduced by Ross Symonds (retired television news presenter and winner of Better Hearing Australia Best Speaker Award), this was the small “invisi” hearing aid range. It was revolutionary for the time and many people took the step towards better hearing with the comfort of knowing that they were not advertising they had a hearing loss.

Since then Joanna, John and the family have introduced numerous products to the country. “Being a family practice we view what we do as a vocation and believe it is a privilege to help people to hear better, says Joanna, director of the independent family practice. Our daughter Kerry helped over 260 underprivileged people in India hear better some years ago. Many were children and people travelled up to 2 days for assistance. This month I will assist the Starkey Foundation fit hearing aids to people in Indonesia who otherwise would have no opportunity to hear better. The Foundation has the ambitious goal of fitting 1 million hearing devices to people worldwide by the end of the decade. The Foundation manufacturers a special range of product for these outreach programs. Back home in Australia we are so fortunate to have access to cutting edge technology, explains Joanna. The evolution of hearing devices has been nothing short of amazing and is similar to that of the mobile phone. Remember the large brick with an antennae? Now we have smart phones that fit in the palm of your hand and which some people virtually run their lives by. Well the hearing instruments are similar, getting smaller and smarter. The latest product uses a micro quad-processor

World’s smallest hearing device just got smarter! New quad-core micro chip processes sound 5 times faster! Experience clarity like never before. Virtually invisible with effortless listening even in the most challenging of situations. HEAR THE DIFFERENCE FOR YOURSELF!

to manage sound enabling speech, noise and music to be processed separately resulting in clear speech, reduced background noise and vibrant music. New developments have brought smart hearing devices that can be used with smart phones. The mobile phone can act as a remote control so volume can be discreetly adjusted and special programs set up for music and noisy restaurants or it can act as a remote microphone streaming sound to the hearing devices. Using GPS the device ‘knows’ the location and environment and can adjust for this. In the future the micro-computers will probably do a range of functions other than improve hearing and be seamlessly integrated into the hearing device, explains Joanna. This will be a very exciting development and take hearing enhancement main stream. At AUDiOHEALTH we offer a range of these devices which cannot be seen when worn in the ear, making it easy to discreetly improve hearing means there is a solution for everyone. We are sensitive to our client’s needs and desire for discretion and believe the proof of the pudding is in the eating so come in and hear the difference for yourself. AUDiOHEALTH is one of the few and first Lyric Accredited Providers in the country introducing the first 100% invisible long wear hearing device. This device can be worn in the ear for up to four months before being changed. It is purchased on a subscription basis and the technology is updated with each change. MISSION BEACH

MOVEMBER Every year since 2003 you may have noticed men growing a bit of fuzz on their upper lips. This is to raise awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues in men.

Movember

Movember started in Melbourne and has spread to become a global phenomenon. Over $580million has been raised worldwide through sponsorship of this event. Nearly everyone knows someone with prostate cancer. It is the most common cancer diagnosed in men. The key to treatment is early diagnosis and that can be assisted by requesting a blood test called prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostate examination (digital rectal examination or DRE) where a gloved finger is inserted in the bottom to check for abnormalities. The PSA test measures a substance which is made in the prostate and is found in the blood stream. Not all rises in PSA are because of cancer. Some may be from infection or other reasons. If there is suspicion, the diagnosis may then be assisted by the patient undergoing a prostate MRI. Cairns has one of three MRI machines in Australia with the associated ProCAD software that improves the method of cancer detection. An MRI involves the patient lying still on his back for 30 minutes. Over 80% of the men having this scan will not have findings suspicious for an intermediate or high grade prostate cancer. This means that random biopsies of the prostate are a thing of the past. Only if a suspicious area is seen on the MRI, will biopsies be required to confirm it. Only two biopsy specimens are usually needed if the biopsy is carried out using the Soteria robot guided system compared with up to 30-40 random samples sometimes performed. Testicular cancer is a disease of young men and occurs in the 15-45 age group. It is usually found when a lump is detected in the testicle either incidentally or it being noticed after a knock to the testicle. Testicle cancers are usually not painful. Diagnosis is often assisted by ultrasound and blood tests which may show

The good news is that around 97% of patients will live a normal lifespan with surgical removal when a prosthesis is usually inserted to give a normal appearance. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy is sometimes also needed. Mental health problems are not always complained about by a large number of men. It seems to be considered as “weak” or “unmanly”. However, in recent times a number of high profile men have admitted to having various types of mental illness. Their courage in this respect should be admired and the benefit of their examples is to be praised and respected. Of course, this usually only comes about after quite a period of time.

Initial Fertility Assessment The first visit to Cairns Fertility Centre will provide you with general information about the centre and an explanation as to what you can expect in relation to diagnosis and treatment. You will be required to undertake some preliminary investigations as follows:• Physical examination of both male and female partners. • Blood tests for both partners. • Ultrasound scans for both partners. • A semen analysis.

fallopian tubes are patent (unblocked) and to examine the uterine cavity. They are performed on-site at Cairns Central Day Hospital. All information is then reviewed by the medical specialist and your best treatment option can be discussed and selected in a review appointment with the clinic. This appointment may be combined with a “Day 21” review and is the ideal time to see the Fertility Specialist (“Day 1” being the day all menstrual cycles commence). Tests and Early Fertility Treatment Plan

Using the results of these tests we can determine the appropriate pathway for a suitable treatment regimen. Your First Steps towards Treatment Once initial investigations are complete, it is generally recommended that the female partner undergoes a complete hormone tracking and Assessment Cycle. This will provide essential information on the hormone profile during the menstrual cycle and will involve blood tests as well as ultrasound examination to determine growth of egg follicles and ovulation. A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) or HyCoSy procedure is also undertaken in the Assessment Cycle. These tests are ultrasound guided investigations which are used to check that the

WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR MEN’S HEALTH THIS MOVEMBER? “Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends face a health crisis that isn’t being tal ked about. Men a re dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent.” - Movember Foundation, 2016

ROB I N G O RD O N

Robin G o rd o n i s t h e C EO o f Cairns Wo men ’s I m a g in g

November (or Movember as it’s now commonly referred to), is men’s health awareness month. A time to put the focus squarely on the men in our lives and consider how we can help raise awareness of health issues specific to them. In particular, the Movember Foundation has flagged mental health, prostate cancer, breast cancer and testicular cancer as topics most often considered taboo when talking amongst the blokes. Not surprising really as they’re confronting issues to face. For us, prostate cancer deserves a special mention as aside from being the most common cancer diagnosed in men, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia more than 3,000 men die from the disease each year (for the record, this is more than the number of women who die from breast cancer each year). There is some good news however as when caught early, prostate cancer is a disease that can be recovered from. Prostate cancer and the benefits of early screening hit the press quite recently with an unexpected announcement from Hollywood actor, Ben Stiller. In case you missed the story, Stiller was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2014. The discovery was made following a standard health screening appointment, during which his Doctor recommended a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test. In Stiller’s case, the PSA test came back with elevated numbers and his journey with cancer and follow-up care began. Having now made a full recovery, Stiller is talking publicly to raise awareness of prostate cancer and to encourage men to have a conversation with their Doctor. You can read more about his journey by following the link on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook. com/CairnsRadiology/ - look for the article called “The Prostate Cancer Test That Saved My Life”. For those unfamiliar with this important little gland, the prostate is part of the male reproductive system and is vital to producing healthy, strong ‘swimmers’. While we don’t want to get too graphic here, it’s often described as being the size of a walnut and it’s common for the gland to grow in size as men age. This growth

of the prostate can sometimes cause discomfort and unfortunately, can also lead to development of cancerous cells. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, some symptoms associated with prostate cancer include: • Feeling the frequent or sudden need to urinate • Finding it difficult to urinate and/or discomfort when urinating • Finding blood in the urine or semen • Pain in the lower back, upper thighs or hips These symptoms may not mean you have cancer, but if you (or the man in your life) have experienced any of these, it’s important to make an appointment to speak with your GP. If investigation is warranted, your Doctor will advise you on the appropriate tests for you. But it’s important to note that many of these tests are part of a general men’s health check and certainly not to be feared. If initial test results do show elevated risk, you may be referred to a Urologist for a prostate biopsy. At this stage of testing you can certainly start asking questions about the approach they recommend as through advances in technology, an image-guided biopsy is now the gold standard in determining whether or not suspect cells are cancerous. Image-guided biopsies are performed using MRI technology, which not only increases accuracy for the test, but reduces the need for day surgery. MRI-guided biopsies are much less invasive and because there is no need for surgery, no downtime is needed for recovery. If you are referred for a prostate biopsy, it’s important to note that not all radiology practices have MRI Prostate technology in place – but there’s no need to fly south for the procedure anymore. Cairns Radiology can perform this procedure in private and comfortable surrounds right here in Cairns. While your Urologist is the first place to start with any questions, if you’re unsure about the procedure you are welcome to give us a call. Phone 4045 6850 and ask to speak with our Chief Radiographer. Make time to consider the men in your life and encourage conversation around the importance of their health. What can you do for men’s health this Movember?

HOW URGENT IS THAT HIRE? E VA G R A BNE R Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88

LIFE Business One of a recruiter’s greatest challenges is when a client calls about an ‘urgent’ role that they need filled. They need resumes yesterday and the candidates must tick all the boxes. The recruiter then scrambles to search, advertise, interview and shortlist great candidates, advising them in the process that they need to be prepared for an almost-immediate interview as the role is as close to an immediate start as can be arranged. They follow up a day or two later ... no answer. A few days more ... no answer; telephone messages, emails but nothing; a black hole. Nothing. Then out of nowhere a week or two later the client calls to organise interviews but two out of the three candidates have already accepted roles elsewhere. It’s back to the drawing board for the recruiter and the client. Not only do recruiters face this kind of situation but internal HR has this dilemma as well. If there is a previous relationship with a hiring partner, they will have a better understanding of their true expectations but not always. A recent report from a large Australian recruitment firm revealed that up to 67% of companies have missed out on qualified candidates due to a lengthy recruitment process. They also stated that 79% of HR Managers and recruiters are concerned about losing top candidates to competing job offers and other companies who are aggressively targeting talent with key skills. In a market where top candidates are being offered multiple roles and know their market worth, it’s the companies that move fast once they have found a match who have a definite advantage over competing employers. One thing that both recruiters and HR managers have noticed is that the hiring process itself is taking longer mainly due to a number of factors, such as: • Too many internal stakeholders involved • Candidate expectations have increased • Finding qualified candidates is becoming more and more challenging Employers can set high requirements for the recruitment of new employees – top level performers who have all the need-to-have as well as the nice-to-have skills. This is all well and good but finding that ‘perfect’ candidate is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I recommend the following tips to help make your hiring process more efficient: • Remuneration package – Agree on the package before you start interviewing so that

you can sign off on an offer without having to consult other internal stakeholders. • Job Description – Know exactly what you are looking for, define the competencies that are absolutely necessary and skills that can be further developed or trained down the line. Then agree on a key selection criteria of no more than six criteria. • Set a time limit – This is essential. Advertising, closing date, initial interviews and second interviews. Ensuring all stakeholders block out time in their diaries for the interviews. Any delay can result in the loss of that ideal candidate. • Team work – Identify all the relevant stakeholders in advance and ensure that expectations are aligned, consider working with a specialised recruitment consultancy to find the best candidates. • Consider an interim person – Is your team juggling a number of projects whilst you are conducting the recruitment process? Consider relieving the pressure by hiring a temporary/contract person to ease the burden or even offer temporary contracts to assess the skills and fit of a candidate before offering them a permanent position. The only thing worse than not being able to attract the right calibre of candidate for a role is attracting an excellent candidate and then missing out on them because your recruitment process was too long or too disorganised. Don’t be that company. Eva is an Executive Recruiter and Search Consultant with nearly a decade of experience across a multitude of industries. There has been a noticeable trend at the moment where some businesses are creating their logos on cheap online logo design sites, or taking on this job themselves. Don’t underestimate how important a good logo design is to your business success and how much value it brings to your business. Not only are most of these online logo design sites based overseas and the ‘sausage factory’ designers don’t have the first clue about your local environment, your competitors or your consumers, they are not local and so therefore your money is supporting an overseas business and you aren’t ‘keeping it local’. Logo design in today’s fast paced world can be totally devalued and underestimated and it shouldn’t be as your brand is your biggest asset.

A good logo design will help your business to grow and build brand reputation, something that identifies your business every time it is seen and conveys the message you want to your customers, now and for many years to come. The logo is one aspect of your businesses commercial brand, its shape, colours, fonts and images should be different from others in the market. A logo needs to be original and memorable to create the greatest impact, and for consumers to be able to easily differentiate your business from your competition. I sometimes scratch my head and wonder why people have no logo at all or why they would even bother with a cheap logo design when it is such a big asset for their business. There are many reasons why a quality, professionally designed logo for your business doesn’t cost $5.00 Let’s take a look at what quality you can expect from a logo that is professionally designed by a local graphic designer. Every

designer’s prices vary for logo design, but you can get a quality brand developed from concept to completion for your business from as low as $350. The design process that a professional graphic designer undertakes usually consists of: A Design Brief: They meet with their client face to face and gather all the information needed about the business. Research: They conduct research focusing on the industry the business is in, its history and its competitors. Inspiration: They research into logo designs that have been successful and current styles and trends that are related to the design brief. Execute ideas: They develop the logo design concept(s) around the brief and the research conducted. They use creativity and know how to design the logo taking their ideas to the computer creating their first proofs using suitable colour palettes and font variations. Presentation: Graphic designers usually draft up dozens of logo ideas during the brainstorming phase, then pick only a handful to present to the client. Final stages: There could be few or little changes in between the initial proof to completion of the logo, then the graphic designer will finalise the agreed logo choice and supply it to you in various file formats for your commercial use. Now do you think doing all of that costs $5.00? Do yourself a favour and invest in a quality design for your business brand. Your business will thank you for it.

There has been an increasing trend of people taking up what is called direct insurance (i.e. pre-packaged insurance available online or via phone through companies). As someone who’s been in the insurance industry for over 40 years, this concerns me, as people are buying insurance thinking they are getting full coverage, when on many occasions they are not. The sad thing is by the time they find out that they don’t have adequate cover, it’s too late. More often than not something has happened and they need to lodge a claim urgently. I had an acquaintance only the other day tell me about their less than pleasant experience when the power went off at their house when they were away on holidays. When they got home they found close to $1,000 worth of red meat and seafood in their deep freezer had spoiled and when they rang their insurance company to lodge a claim, they were told “Sorry you aren’t covered for fusion.” This particular person had only recently changed their insurance policy over for their home and contents to one of the direct insurance companies after receiving a cheaper deal. What they didn’t realise was the direct insurance company didn’t cover many of the items that were in their original insurance policy. It was a very big lesson for this particular family as they then had to go out and refill their freezer out of their own pocket, while also paying their insurance premium that didn’t cover them for what they thought it did. A bitter pill to swallow.

CairnsLife 61 Magazine

It pays to read the fine print so you are comparing apples with apples when you are shopping around for your insurance. Or take the hassle out of it and see an insurance broker as they do all of that for you at no extra cost. It’s essential that people realise that these direct insurance products are often just the basic cover and the person on the other end of the phone is not able to give objective advice to you. All they want to do is sell you their insurance product and they don’t necessarily take into account all aspects of your personal needs in the short interaction they have with you. I always tell people it’s a cost vs coverage scenario - what you pay vs what you get for that payment. And from all my years in the industry I can honestly say, if something appears too good to be true, it usually is. An insurance broker is able to give you the personalised advice that you need to ensure you receive value for money while also guaranteeing you have the right cover. This will enable you to make the best choice for you and your family/business. THE POWER OF PR INTERNAL RELATIONS D ANA E J O N E S

Danae Jo n es i s P r in c ip a l o f PR & Market i n g f i rm D a n a e J o n e s Consu l t i n g

When you consider the role of public relations, chances are you immediately focus on external communication. That is, assessing how your business and/or brand communicates with the masses, your market and your competitors. It is crucial that you develop and maintain a positive perception from an external point of view, but don’t let internal communication and strategy take a back seat. You are also responsible for engaging your staff and promoting the values of your organisation. Communication between employer and employee and employee and employee is vital to daily activity and productivity and your people being true to your brands values. This does not necessarily mean you have to take an “open door” approach, but it is important that you communicate the direction your business is taking this week, this month, this year and beyond! It is also a good idea to invest time in developing systems and policies for all forms of written and verbal communication that takes place amongst your team. Your customer service policies need to tie into this. If things aren’t up to shape on the inside, something as simple as a missed email, invoice, or phone call could ultimately impact external perceptions. Your people need to be just as excited as you about the company’s direction, and to harness that positive energy within people takes careful analysis and strategic planning. Interestingly it’s often this time of year that we as business owners think about thanking our customers for their ongoing support of our company through Christmas cards, eCards, corporate gifts, Christmas parties etc, but what about your team and your suppliers? The ones that put their foot to the metal for you day in, day out. How are you thanking them for their service to you as the year draws to a close? It doesn’t have to be elaborate or cost the earth, but sometimes a simple thank

you gift, or social team get together is all it takes to touch the hearts of your people. I remember working for a company when I was much younger in a very male dominated industry that gave its people a large food hamper and a big family sized leg ham every Christmas. It was a very generous gift. But I remember the excitement amongst the staff at Christmas time when they would be delivered. Those staff worked their butts off for this particular business all year round, it was a very labour intensive environment. The staff were not given much throughout the year in terms of gifts, but this was something the company did for their staff every year, and the staff really valued this gift highly. It had become a Christmas tradition and it showed that this company cared about their people and their families. At that time of year when money can get tight for a lot of families, it meant the world to them. Now I’m not saying you need to spend as much money as this on every staff member, but the reason I am telling you this story is to show you the positive impact that it had. I personally talk about that company and its owners to this day with a great sense of pride and fondness. They possessed a hard working culture with old school values and they had a very low turnover of people. A lot has changed in the business world since those times I know, but human behaviour is fundamentally the same. Everyone likes to be valued and acknowledged for their hard work and thanked if they have done a good job. So I ask you to give some thought to what Christmas tradition you can establish in your company that will leave your staff members hearts full as they go into the festive season and ensure they come back to work in a positive mind set about you and your business. e: danae@danaejones.com.au w: www.danaejones.com.au

LEADERSHIP & A GROWTH MINDSET M ARK DEN N ER T

Managing Director (Austr alasia region)

Leadership in business as in life in general, is not an easy thing. After working with many business owners, and management teams across the spectrum of for-profit, not-forprofit and hybrid/social enterprise models both locally and abroad - I am convinced that leadership is the X-factor when it comes to creating and sustaining a growth-oriented business with longevity. Leaders need to navigate many and various transitions on the journey towards growth. We’ve found one single leadership trait that stands out as defining the leadership journey - that is a growth mindset. Leaders with a growth mindset focus their energies into developing their assets and exploring emerging opportunities rather than fixating on things that aren’t working or current problems they’re facing. A leadership growth mindset always sees room for growth and promotes learning from mistakes as a critical step toward greater success. THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND YOUR CHILDREN S U Z A N N E H ADL E Y

The impact of social media on children was the subject of discussion at the Biannual National Family Law Conference held in Melbourne recently, when I attended as a delegate. The statistics revealed by a recent Australian study on the amount of media to which our children are being exposed on a daily basis, outside of their school work, indicated teenagers are exposed to 9 hours of media use per day. Younger children are exposed to media use of around 6 hours a day outside their school work. This media exposure, which includes listening to music, has introduced children to distractions not known in previous generations. In turn this impacts on the ability to learn fully. Teenagers are brilliant at multi tasking - listening to music while studying, diving between homework video games, the latest Facebook post and Instagram/Twitter feed. According to researchers the impact of this media exposure results in an inability to stay focussed on a single task and although exploring many areas, a shallow learning experience is the outcome. Using computer screens at night impacts on sleep patterns - psychologists recommend getting the technology out of the bedroom - out where it is easier for parents to monitor its use and keep their children safe. The blue light from digital media, including Iphones, laptops Ipads and desktop screens, is a melatonin suppressant. It seems 74% of Australian children use screen time between 9pm and midnight. Our children are wired and tired. Their sleep is impacted on by digital equipment in a way not experienced in previous generations. One way of reducing the impact of exposure to blue screens is to install a program readily available such as justgetflux.com which adjusts the screen to the time of day, reducing the blue light exposure. But what about the impact of social media on children? Digital age children use social media regularly to communicate with their friends. Facebook is the most obvious and

prolifically used but there are other sites less well known to parents. Snapchat, Instagram Twitter all are accessed regularly by children and are used by them to build relationships online. According to the research 57% of teenagers meet friends online first. Social media or gameplay is the most common form of building relationships The statistics also show that 21% of teenagers, particularly girls, feel worse after social media interaction. Someone else’s life is better than theirs. In a highly sexualised society, the cult of celebrity worship, of photoshopped images of impossible perfection and exaggerated voluptuousness, has impacted on young girls in particular, making them feel less confident with their bodies. The impact of social media can also be felt by children whose parents are separated. More and more cases come before the Family Court where one parent has used social media to abuse and denigrate the other party. A child who is a Facebook friend of both parents, can be exposed quite easily albeit one hopes inadvertently, to this denigration. In more than one case, Facebook Messenger has been used by one parent seeking to subvert or undermine the other parent’s relationship with the child. Consider the child in a shared parenting arrangement who is contacted constantly by one parent, often late at night, while in the other parent’s care. In some very recent cases, parents have lost the care of their children through this kind of insidious and damaging behaviour. Families need to work together to set rules about internet usage, that are applicable to their family’s needs and schedules, to reduce the impact of social media on their children. Setting rules about screen time and putting these in writing on the fridge, the children’s bedroom walls makes it clear in the family what screen time and usage is acceptable. Following these simple guidelines will help reduce the negative impact of social media on children.

Gold Medals and Gin Wins WORDS BY SILVIA MOGOROVICH Mt Uncle Distillery was recently named Australian Whiskey Distillery of the Year at the Melbourne International Spirits Competition, winning gold in the Whiskey category and picking up silver and bronze for their rum and gin respectively. Attending both the London and Melbourne Junipalooza Festivals has seen an increased interest in their beautiful botanical gin. And late last month they announced a new national distribution partnership with Rogue Wines, who are becoming known for their cunning book of niche wines and award-winning spirits.

The award-winning and creatively crafted range of spirits and liqueurs are paired with distinctly unique labels, and equally unique names: Iridium Gold Rum, Anjea Vodka, Sexycat Marshmallow Liqueur - the world’s very first commercial liqueur that turns to gel when super chilled. Botanic Australis Gin is a closely guarded secret blend of 14 Australian Native plants which have produced a superior dry styled gin, and the limited edition Navy Strength has been very well-received addition to the range this year. The Platinum Cane Spirit is filtered through volcanic rock after being distilled three times, to mimic natural mineral water filtration, purifying and enriching the spirit. The pride of the pack must surely be the gold medal winning The Big Black Cock Whiskey, also known as The BBC Whiskey, innocently named after their rooster, who you can see strutting his stuff when you visit the distillery in Walkamin. The plantation is surrounded by the foothills of Mt Uncle, and provides a stunning home to a friendly bunch of alpacas, donkeys and goats, with a good chance you will see peacocks roaming freely on the grounds, making it a spectacular location to hold weddings and functions, or even photographic shoots. Mt Uncle Distillery is producing world-class products only an hour’s drive from Cairns. And with Bridges Café closing for the month of November, and reopening in December (with later opening hours and a refreshed menu) as Bridges Bar & Restaurant, there’s lots of exciting developments for this local treasure!

It always pays to be familiar with your plumbing system - the most important thing you can do is find out where the main water shutoff valve is (either outside your home/apartment or inside a cupboard) and how to turn it off. Being able to shut your water off at the main valve can be vital to reducing damage to your home if a pipe bursts. Excessive water bills are also a sign that there is a leak - look around the yard to see if there is a patch of grass that is greener and longer than the rest, as this could indicate a leaking pipe.

ATLANTIS GLAZE • OLD STONE • CUSTOMISED WATER FEATURES • CONSULTATION • DELIVERY & INSTALLATION SERVICE

HOW TO CHECK FOR WATER LEAKS 1. Turn off stop tap to all toilet cisterns 2. Turn the water meter off 3. Do a reading of the meter 4. Wait 10 minutes and then check if meter has moved – if it HAS moved (and there are no dripping taps), check for watermarks/mould/bubbling paint on the wall behind plumbing fixtures 5. If nothing is obvious, and the meter is slowly ticking, it’s time to call a Plumber!

Any plumbing repairs must be done by a licensed Plumber - ask to see their plumbing license and QBCC Plumbing Contractors card. If you get work done by a “handyman” and something happens after they leave your insurance company will NOT help you! DON’T RISK IT - only use a Licensed Plumber! Preventative maintenance is the best thing to combat blockages and slow drains. Invest in an inexpensive hair trap or screen for your tub/shower, and in the kitchen, don’t pour cooking oil down your drain, as it coats and hardens your pipes with a sticky scum that will catch other particles and eventually block the pipe. FIND YOUR JASPER

Hi, my name is Jasper and so far my life hasn’t been smooth sailing. I was picked up as a stray puppy but once hit teenager stage I developed too much of an interest in the chickens at the house I lived at. You wouldn’t know though as I am a very giving dog and just want to be with someone that loves me. I am very loyal, love water and adore kids. It would be a dream to be part of a family and I get along with any dogs or even cats. I am very playful and a bit of a social butterfly; love meeting other people and dogs. Except for being house trained I have little experienced in obedience. However, my carer has told me some new stuff like sitting, waiting for my food, walking up and down the stairs and come when I am called. I am also getting used to the crate and love sleeping in it. Walking on the leash is still in working process but apparently I learn fast.

POPPET

Poppet has the softest fur and loves her belly rubs oh so much. She is a sweet independent girl who likes her own thing. When she does want those belly rubs she rolls on her back and exposes her belly. She loves food and her favorite time of the day is dinnertime. She gets along well with other cats and the dogs don’t phase her. She would love a home of her own where she can lay around all day. She has gorgeous little pixie ears. She is looking for a loving furrever home. Poppet’s adoption fee is $45 which includes desexing, vaccinations and microchipping, and up to date flea and worm control.

Jasper is $300 to adopt: desexed, microchipped, C4 vaccinated and wormed.

MUTLEY JAZ

Beautiful Jaz is a shiny, silky goddess of a mother! Her eyes are like jewels, her tail is foofy and she is laid-back and divine! She is cat, dog and kid friendly and is litter trained. Jaz is $75 to adopt: desexed, microchipped, vaccinated (F3) & wormed.

Mutley had a rough start to life, but with lots of love and good food, he has come along in leaps and bounds and is looking for a home of he’s own. Mutley loves nothing more than playing with the big dogs, he is fantastic with kids cats and can be trusted to be left unsupervised with chickens. If you can’t adopt - Donate; If you can’t Donate - Volunteer; If you can’t volunteer - Network, Educate and share. Mutley’s adoption fee is $150 which includes desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, worming and flea treatment.

DARIA

ROXY

Roxy is a beautiful girl. She sits for food and treats. .. still learning to stay. Roxy would benefit greatly from further training, but is a smart girl so will learn quickly. She likes to be around her people… ideal for a large property and a family. Loves water, will play in any available to her. Roxy is a nice friendly girl patiently waiting for her furever family.

Daria settles in easily. Loves to play and loves to smooch when tired. Very vocal at times but it’s usually when she wants something bad or looking for someone. With her beautiful bold stripes, pretty Daria is ready to come and play in her new home. Of course she needs her beauty rest between games. With jet black lovely, soft fur to snuggle up to, she will be a lovely baby to add to your family.

Roxy is $300 to adopt: desexed, C4 vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea/ tick treated.

Daria’s adoption fee is $100 which includes desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, worming and flea treatment.

Let’s face it, there aren’t too many humans that love to move house and our pets feel the same. We start to pack up our things, start to decide which things we are getting rid of and what things we will keep. Our pets notice that something is happening, their familiar territory is changing and they get worried that they will be left behind. During this time our pets can show us they are just a little stressed and need a little more TLC than usual. There are a few things that you can do to minimise the stress of moving for your pets for example, keeping feeding and walking routines as normal as possible and keeping familiar items such as bedding out of the packing until the last minute. It is also important to be sure that you have your pets’ vet records and vaccination certificates handy as these might be needed during the move. For many people moving house, there is time between your furniture leaving your old home and arriving to the new location. You might be unsure about the best way to manage your pet during this time and the best way to get them to the new address. Dogtainers Cairns are a locally owned and operated pet transport

First Class

Education There’s nothing better than having one of the best Catholic schools in your area to send your children to for a high-quality education - unless, of course, you have the choice of two. Such is the case for residents in Edmonton and surrounding areas. Thanks to the dynamic new MacKillop Catholic College at Mount Peter, which will grow to full Prep to Year 12 status in the coming years, and the long-standing and highlyrespected St Therese’s School at Bentley Park, Edmonton locals are spoiled for choice when it comes to where to send their children for a quality education. MacKillop Catholic College opened its doors at the start of 2016 offering Prep to Year 3 classes, with future plans to cater for an anticipated 1500 students from Prep through to Year 12. St Therese’s has enormous popularity and a strong reputation as the only Catholic school in the area for over 85years. While its origins link back to 1929, when it opened in Edmonton as Edmonton Convent School, the school was renamed to St Therese’s in 1965 before it relocated to its current position at Bentley Park in 1995, where it has continued to grow to meet demand. While both Catholic schools provide a quality academic education they also focus on developing their students intellectually, spiritually, physically, morally and emotionally. The goal of both schools, and all Cairns Catholic schools, is to not only give students the best education possible but to ensure students find meaning and value in their lives so they can become compassionate, caring and contributing members of society. “We acknowledge, promote and celebrate the God-given gifts of each individual so that they may achieve their potential, we work in partnership with parents and provide caring, safe and respectful learning environments,”

said Catholic Education Services Executive Director Bill Dixon. “Our schools are faith-based, affordable and welcoming to all who value the explicit goals and educational qualities that Catholic schools are known for.” MacKillop Catholic College The $5.7 million first stage of MacKillop opened this year with 86 students in Prep to Year 3 and has grown to 96 with 150 students expected next year. It opened in response to demand in the Cairns southern grown corridor and when completed, the school will be multi-stream and is expected to have enrolments of more than 1500 students. For some, secondary at MacKillop can’t come soon enough with enrolment pressure being felt at all the Catholic secondary colleges in the Cairns area. “Our college will grow quite quickly and it’s very likely that from 2018 onwards our college will grow by minimum of 150 students every year,” founding Principal Luke Reed said. “We have a lovely family spirit in our community now and we want to ensure this ‘family feel’ remains central to the student experience in our college. “One very important lesson for us so far in the school year has been how helpful it is to establish community and a sense of safety and belonging for students. And that’s what seems to have occurred; it has been a fantastic start.” Mr Reed, who has a long list of academic and professional credentials, was principal of Mount St Bernard College and CES Education Officer of Faith & Religious Education Secondary before being named the college’s first principal. While he is thrilled to be the founding principal of a new school, he also is mindful of the great importance of sharing the Catholic faith.

“I’m very excited but also very aware of the responsibility to ensure that the school is an authentic Catholic school,” he said. “We have a responsibility to use the gifts we have been provided by God to help young people. We want to give them a solid foundation.” St Therese’s School From a start of just 30 students in 1929, today St Therese’s School, Bentley Park has approximately 670 students in years Prep to Year 6, led by new principal David Adam-Jones, who joined the school in Term 3 this year. The school is proud of its rich history and its modern facilities and for providing a holistic and quality education to all students. “St Therese’s is just a fantastic school,” Mr Adam-Jones said. “Staff are outreaching, inclusive and caring, like a big family. What I find unique at St Therese’s is the fact that parents come up and say hello and introduce themselves, and the kids want to know me. And they laugh - they want to have fun, and they like my jokes! “I think schools need to ensure students have fun as well as learn. When students are joyful, happy and engaged, they learn.” Mr Adam-Jones, an experienced primary school educator of more than 25 years and former president of the Catholic Primary Principal Association for two years, has 14 years’ experience as principal in the Toowoomba and Wagga Wagga Dioceses. “This term I’ve just been getting to know the students and their families,” he said. “My vision is to enhance the learning that’s already happening here. “Catholic schools have a 2000-yearold history of Christianity and those Christian values are embedded in what all our Catholic schools do.”

MYTH BUSTING Ever wanted to know…….? Do you have to be Catholic to go to a Catholic school? No, but it certainly helps in the priority ranking when schools are oversubscribed with applications for enrolment. For our enrolment policy, visit www.cns.catholic.edu.au/ enrolling/who-can-enrol Do Catholic schools have to take a percentage of non-Catholics? We’re glad you asked. No, and this has never been the case, yet the myth perpetuates that Catholic schools have to accept a magical percentage of nonCatholics. In fact, just over 50% of enrolments in our schools are Catholic. Again, refer to our enrolment policy. Is it expensive to go to a Catholic school? No, unlike private or independent schools can be, and especially not in our Cairns Diocese. If you can afford to send your child to kindy, you can afford to enroll your child in Prep at a Catholic primary school. Discounts also apply, as well as generous fee concessions for those experiencing genuine financial hardship. Find out more at www.cns.catholic.edu.au/ enrolling/fees-and-discounts/ When should I apply? Enrolment procedures are managed individually by schools. It is best to contact the Catholic schools you are interested in to enquire about when to apply for that school. And so it was (with the usual level of life balance ambivalence) that back in 2011, I approached a new, shiny, running shoe of a car. Until that point, I had invested variously in rear wheel drive, big engines and leather or at least high riding four wheel drives, to protect against the rigours of time. This was DIFFERENT. It looked like something lampposts. However, it handled like it was on rails, and came with one of the longest warranties then available in Australia. After only a few minutes behind the wheel, I became fairly certain that facial wrinkles were being smoothed out and that travelling through time backwards had, indeed, become possible through the generous application of g-forces from previously unfelt directions. The bright yellow-and-black bumble bee livery of the test car made other road users grind to a halt, in what I assumed was confused awe. The rather splendidly appointed insides made me feel cosseted, instead of the usual hot-hatched cramped. After half an hour of thrashing about I felt exuberant, younger and had visibly smoother skin... Okay, the Since then, Citroen (whose habit of making cars that seemed to be designed for the future 50 years ago - that retro chic thing) has been at full velocity, applying the DS treatment to other, slightly more sedate, siblings. In Europe, “DS Automobiles” has now broken free of Citroen and seems to have become a standalone mark under the PSA groups umbrella, along with blood cousin Peugeot, and it’s now weird uncle/father Citroen. The rumour is

branded dealerships, but not here, I imagine, or if here, not soon. our sunny shores sometime early next year. The range has been restyled, but keeps the original previous models in Europe has been outstanding: they are everywhere, giving their competitors (the sporty versions of Polo, 208, Clio and Fiesta) a serious run for their money. Apart from losing the corporate Citroen grille and external styling updates, the new DS3 range will feature a slew of upgrades including a new seveninch touch display and, on higher-spec models, the addition of Mirror Screen, allowing for connectivity with Apple and Android devices. There’s also front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and hill assist in manual models. Perhaps the biggest talking point in the range is the high-output Performance model. Figures for the Performance model have not been released, but in its Racing guise, the hot little hatch claimed a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds. It isn’t likely that my original test conditions can be repeated, and the chances of the new model becoming an automotive fountain of youth are starting price tag in the late twenties on current models there is a 3 year warranty and a six year or 90,000km capped servicing along with frequent promotional extensions. Take one for a test drive you may never look the same again!
