KokoSuccess If you want to look your best and feel more confident you need to visit the team at Koko Lashes and Brows. What began as a one-person service twoand-a-half years ago immediately became so popular with clients that it quickly expanded and now includes 10 staff and two busy salons. Founded by Jade Cook of Cairns, the eyelash and eyebrow service started off in a rented room at a hair salon. It moved into its own premises on the Sunshine Coast in November 2015 and expanded to Cairns three months ago to service a fast-growing client base. “It may seem like a small thing but receiving a lash and brow service from us makes a huge difference to people and their confidence,” Jade said. “People want to feel good about how they look, and it’s so rewarding to help others feel good.”
“The industry is constantly growing and there are new techniques out all the time,” Jade said. “We regularly undergo training and research the industry in Australia and worldwide to keep up to date with the best products and techniques available.” Koko is not only for women, although they make up the majority of clients. “It’s now more common, relaxed and comfortable for guys to come in and have their brows done,” Jade said. While it was Jade’s vision, determination and skill that started the successful business, she refuses to take all the credit.
The secret to Koko’s success is its exceptional customer service. All staff members genuinely care about ensuring each client has the right look for them. “Everyone’s facial features are different,” Jade said. “We consult with each client individually and believe it’s really important to customise our services to suit each person.”
JADE AND THE KOKO TEAM
Koko’s range of lash and brow services is extensive and also features the increasingly fashionable lash extensions and cosmetic brow tattooing.
“I have the world’s most incredible team who help so many woman and men every single day,” she said. “I am forever grateful for their hard work and passion.”
“Cosmetic tattooing and lash extensions are just booming in popularity,” Jade said. “So many people love the benefits of having them.” To enhance their customer service, every staff member at Koko undergoes regular training to keep up to date in the industry.

STILL SUCCESSFUL 40 YEARS ON
There’s a good reason why Ben Kragt Automotive is one of the longeststanding and most reliable 4WD and car service specialists in Cairns. A combination of expert knowledge, highly trained mechanics and consistent, high-quality service are the main reasons why the mechanics and motor engineers business has been successfully servicing vehicles since August 1978. “We’ve seen a lot of changes in the industry in 40 years, which is why our guys consistently undergo regular training,” owner Ben Kragt said. “We pride ourselves on always maintaining a very high standard of service.” Ben and his team offer full 4WD servicing on both old and new vehicles including repairs and service on transmissions, engines, differentials, gearboxes and diesels, among some of their services. They also service and repair all brands and makes of passenger cars and vehicle book service in warranty periods. “We’re always improving our knowledge,” co-manager Craig Arthur said. “As well as regularly undergoing training, we’re also always updating our diagnostic equipment and machines.” Another key element to its success is its focus on providing excellent customer service, which is evident by the number of repeat customers and referrals.
“We’ve had generations of families coming to us including grandchildren of some of our first clients,” Ben said. “We pride ourselves on keeping our clientele very happy.” Ben is also proud of the business’ old-fashioned, honest service that guarantees customers get the best possible outcomes at the best possible prices. He is also well respected for training apprentices and is proud of the success many have achieved. “I have always had apprentices,” he said. “Some of them have since gone out on their own and are doing really well. I’m proud to see their achievements.” When Ben started the business and built his first shed, he rented half of it out. Since then, he has survived the pilot’s strike and the GFC and expanded twice to service growing demand.
“
Over the years we’ve been really fortunate to have valued customers who are confident in our ability to give their vehicles the utmost service and care.

TRINITY ANGLICAN SCHOOL
As well as being one of the most preferred schools in Far North Queensland, where students are renowned for excelling in academic studies, sports, music and cultural experiences, Trinity Anglican School (TAS) has a number of extra advantages that makes it the school of choice for hundreds of families. Small class sizes TAS features small class sizes of just 22 from Prep to Year 6 and 25 in Years 7-12, which give students more time, guidance and personalised feedback from their teachers. Focus on students meeting and exceeding their academic potential The school’s core belief is that every student can succeed academically with the right support and environment and reach their academic potential. The school’s educators are always monitoring improvement in learning, including the use of data and feedback, and identifying where learning can be improved. Highly credentialed and passionate teachers Teaching staff are all genuinely interested in their students and strive for ways to improve the learning of their students. Teachers will often be found helping students during breaks and attending camps, which enhances their relationships. Authentic, character-building Outdoor Education program TAS has an outstanding Outdoor Education experience, recognised as the best in North Queensland and which has been a finalist for the last three years in the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation Outdoors Queensland Awards. Global perspective through Round Square membership Membership of Round Square, an organisation of more than 175 schools globally, provides opportunities for students to experience exchanges, conferences and service projects with overseas students and schools. Balancing 21st century skills with traditional values TAS graduates are very well prepared when they leave school in areas such as teamwork and collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, global awareness and communication skills. Studies in areas such as robotics and coding are balanced with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy skills. Enhanced and advanced junior school program All junior year levels have lessons each week in Japanese, art, music and physical education and all students participate in a structured swimming program all year. There is also a variety of activities available for extension and enrichment, such as Optiminds, chess, robotics and programming, along with a wide range of music and sport opportunities.
“
Students who graduate from Trinity Anglican School make lifelong friends and become part of the Australian Anglican school family, recognised as the best school sector in Australia, producing leaders of yesteryear, today and of the future
Relationship-based pastoral care and student wellbeing with a Christian values framework All students are members of a House, allowing strong links between students of different year levels and leading to a less stratified student body. The school culture is based on Christian values and has an ongoing, strong relationship with Anglican churches within the Cairns region.

MOVING TOWARDS the future
A LOCAL focus with service you can depend on is what defines MEM Removals. From humble beginnings, the Cairnsbased business originally started in Mossman in 1996 with just one small truck and soon grew into a fleet of interstate trucks with storage facilities.
enthusiastic, we went “Of course we can”,” Elaine recalls.
removals by making use of shipping containers and rail transport.
“She opened the doors for us getting into the interstate business.”
“We’ve stayed quite stable in our growth since consolidating. What we’ve felt has happened with other removal companies is as they’ve got bigger they lose their personal touch,” Elaine says.
Through word of mouth and a dedication to stellar customer service, MEM soon grew rapidly in the area.
MEM co-founder Elaine Bertoncini, who owns MEM together with husband Stephen, says hard work, team effort and sacrifice in the early days helped them become one of Cairns’ most popular removal services.
“We wouldn’t be where we are without the support of our local clients,” Elaine says.
With a wave of celebrities including John Farnham and former US president Bill Clinton visiting Port Douglas in the mid-1990s, the town soon experienced a mini-population boom which paid dividends for MEM.
“Even though we have been successful in winning removal contracts with government departments and the Australian Defence Force, we’ve never forgotten our roots,” Elaine says.
“One of our first customers was an interior designer who was renovating the villas and condos at the original Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort. She asked if we could pick up furniture from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Being young and
The business eventually moved to Cairns about 11 years ago as it grew out of its Mossman depot.
“If a cane farmer rings me from Miallo for instance, we’ll still give our locals a discount and bend over backwards to help them.” Having since consolidated their fleet to four trucks and 12 staff with a focus on removals in the Far North, MEM is still able to conduct interstate CairnsLife 16 Magazine
“Whereas our customers deal directly with us. They can pop in to the depot here in Cairns and have a chat which gives them piece of mind.” With Stephen and Elaine also now running training firm Alpha Truck and Training, it’s an exciting time for MEM as the couple looks to the future.
Our goal is “ simply to look
after our many customers and make sure we do a proper job, ELAINE SAYS.
”
TRAINING for success
WHEN it comes to providing transport workers with the right skills to do their job, look no further than Alpha Truck and Training.
“We’re now in our third year of business and it’s going great. Our student numbers continue to grow,” Elaine says.
The business, which was founded by MEM Removals co-owner Stephen Bertoncini in 2014, originally arose out of a need to ensure his truck drivers had the best possible training and competency.
“Stephen is a hard task master and will persevere until he is completely satisfied they are safe to be on the road.”
Alpha director Elaine Bertoncini said the couple identified a clear need for high quality training in the Far North transport industry. “There’s a lot more to driving a truck than just getting in and turning on the ignition,” she says. “A lot of people who get their truck license don’t know how to fill out a work diary for long distances, manage their fatigue, deal with weight restrictions or how to plan a route if they’re driving a B-double.” Stephen, a former mechanic by trade who has operated heavy vehicles and machinery for more than 30 years, has thrived in his training role and loves seeing his students take their skills to the next level.
But truck driving isn’t all that’s taught at Alpha. The company also handles training for a forklift license, handling dangerous goods, fatigue management strategies, completing a work diary and load restraints. Indeed, it’s that comprehensive approach which Elaine believes sets Alpha apart from its competitors. They work closely with Cairns Regional Council, Main Roads and several private transport companies offering flexible training packages. “With truck and forklift licenses you need to be aware of all your safety requirements before you’re out on the road,” she says.
“
It’s all about being competent. You need to really know what you’re doing and that’s where the industry’s changed.
”
“You can never have enough training or refresher training because people get complacent.” Alpha isn’t slowing down any time soon either and is hoping to expand the scope of training offered in other areas such as chainsaws, tree felling, working in confined spaces and earthmoving machinery tickets such as excavator, skid steer (bobcat) and front end loader. “There’s real skill shortages in the area and we would like to help increase employment opportunities for all ages, especially in youth unemployment. You can get a forklift licence at the age of 18 and you’re never too old to learn how to drive a truck,” Elaine says. “We are definitely branching out and the more people get to know us and use our services, the more I think we’ll continue to grow.”

Celebrating
1917-2017
Latest innovations CAIRNS State High School has celebrated 100 years in style. Throughout 2017, a diverse array of wonderful events and activities showcasing the school and its century have been enjoyed by students, staff and the community past and present. Centenary celebrations included the Centenary Book Launch, on February 5 (the school’s official birthday), held at the location of the first school building, Novotel Oasis Resort Cairns. Other major events were spread over the September 15-16 Reunion Weekend. The Back to Cairns High Open Day and Back to 1917: Jazz Supper Club were both epic occasions for all ages. The school also celebrated its official birthday by cutting a huge cake and launching a history book. Cairns High The First Hundred Years 1917 2017 is the story of a school which has faced more than its fair share of challenges from its formative years to the present. Bubonic plague, Spanish flu, two world wars, the bus crash and an arson attack on the original school building are only some of those challenges addressed in the first part of the book, which is a year-by-year account of the school’s first century. The author, Peter Stanton, has personally experienced 27 of

those years as a teacher at Cairns State High School since 1990. The second part of the book investigates in more detail some of the main traditions and innovations of Cairns State High. This section begins by exploring institutions which no longer exist, such as the technical college, the use of corporal punishment at the school, the rail motor and the cadets. Subsequent themes include the origins of school symbols and the sports houses, the main sports played at the school in the past one hundred years, the successful orchestra and other aspects of the arts, the contributions of indigenous students and Cairns High’s emergence in recent years as an internationally recognised school. The book concludes with a series of lists noting past house winners, school captains, duxes, school staff and students who passed junior and senior exams. “This book is not just a history of Cairns High but also of the people and events of Cairns itself,” says Peter. “There are two parts: the first being a yearby-year account of the major happenings connected with the school, and second part encompassing themes such as sport, the arts, the cadets and the school’s progress to becoming an international school.” With over 1500 images accompanying the informative and anecdotal text, Cairns
High The First Hundred Years 1917 -2017 recreates an educational era in Cairns which transformed significantly between 1917 and 2017. On September 15, the school was open to the wider school community and tours were conducted for nearly 500 people aged from nine right up to 100. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also attended and assisted with unveiling a plaque on the junior secondary building, the centenary plaque at the main entrance to the school and also the opening of MacKenzie Walk. MacKenzie Walk is located in the section of outdoor space previously known as the Rainforest Area, extending between G Block (Science), L Block (Maths) and the Canteen, within close vicinity of Crosswell Hall. The area continues to host the now very large old mango and fig trees, raised garden beds, a pergola, lighting and electrics, with Trex® decking throughout. “This space has provided a beautiful environment for our school community to enjoy,” explains Katrina Clarke, Business Manager Facilities, who drove planning and organisation of the works. FINDING the right orthopaedic treatment in the world of advanced medicine can be a challenge at the best of times for most patients. But the expert team at Cairns Orthopaedic Clinic will make sure you’re in safe hands. With three highly skilled surgeons and decades of experience, the clinic offers patients a range of treatment options covering the full scope of orthopaedic conditions. First established in 2003 by Dr Christopher Morrey and Dr Robert Pozzi, the clinic has since grown in both staff size and reputation at their Draper St practice. With the addition of highly trained surgeon Dr Ben Parkinson in 2016, patients at the clinic now have access to one of the best surgical teams in the Cairns region. In fact, all three surgeons have undergone further overseas subspeciality training in their areas of interest to ensure they are at

the forefront of the latest surgical advancements. This comprehensive level of trauma and orthopaedic expertise in a regional centre is rather unique to Cairns and has ensured that local patients do not need to travel to metropolitan centres for the treatment of their complex orthopaedic issues. No matter your condition, Cairns Orthopaedic Clinic has the answer with professional and “down-toearth” advice that takes the worry out of surgery. For instance, Dr Morrey has subspecialty training in the pelvic and acetabular trauma and reconstruction, primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty as well as spinal surgery. Dr Pozzi has a special interest in primary and revision shoulder, hip and knee arthroplasty. And Dr Parkinson compliments the clinic specialising in his preferred area of pelvic, hip and knee conditions.

Technological advancements, both in the operating theatre as well as business management are appropriately used to ensure patients receive quality care and for driving continuous improvement. It was that drive which saw the establishment of the first ever Acute Injury Clinic (AIC) in Cairns in 2007. Run on a Monday evening for those patients with injuries requiring a fast turnaround in treatment, the region’s sporting community have greatly benefited from this service. The addition of Dr Parkinson to the clinic has enabled an additional weekly acute knee injury clinic on Thursday mornings, further boosting patient services. Whatever the challenge, the team at Cairns Orthopaedic Clinic are prepared to work long and hard to provide a caring, professional service of the highest quality to the people of the Far North.
Going the
EXTRA MILE Offering a full-service mechanical workshop as well as a complete tyre shop with a huge range of tyres for all vehicles is what makes Cairns Pit Stop the perfect one-stop shop for all your mechanical needs. For 30 years the company has thrived on going the extra mile for its customers, which is why it continues to be one of the most reliable and successful businesses in the industry. “We find our competitors tend to dabble in both fields, however at CPS we see mechanical and tyres as our core business and provide training to staff in both areas,” said owner Frank Raso, who took over the business two years ago and expanded the tyre shop. “Our focus is to go that extra mile for our customers.” The mechanical side of the business is lead by previous owner Lance Nichols who has a wealth of experience in repairs, servicing and maintenance of cars, utes and 4WDs. “Lance is extremely knowledgeable,” said Frank. “He’s like a walking
encyclopedia, and he has a really good reputation for being a trustworthy and highly skilled mechanic.” While the shop sold tyres previously, Frank enlarged that side of the business when he purchased it. “My background is in tyres,” he said. “My family has a tyre shop up in Mareeba so I grew up in the business. It sounds crazy, but I’m really passionate about tyres.” Cairns Pit Stop has a massive range of tyres for cars and trucks of all sizes as well heavy commercial machinery such as prime movers, loaders, graders and earth-moving equipment. “We have tyres from segaways all the way up to prime movers and earthmoving machinery,” Frank said. “We have a massive range of brands to suit everyone’s needs.” The success of the business is not only due to its quality of work but also because of its knowledgeable

staff, sincere relationships with customer and a genuine desire to help clients. “Excellent customer service is very important to us,” Frank said.
We take pride “ in listening to
our customers, understanding their individual driving requirements and giving them the best advice for their needs.

“When you want people to come back, you need to be constantly keeping it fresh,” Jeanine says.
Red Beret general manager Jeanine Cooke says it is those features, combined with listening to what customers want, that ensures the hotel appeals to a wide customer base across the Redlynch area.
“It’s stood the test of time because we’re in Redlynch and not the city, so we’re not relying on the tourist trade.
Wherever you are in the venue, it’s always about having a good time, SHE SAYS.
Adding to the appeal of the hotel, children catered for with littlies play areas, video games and iPads all provided to ensure the kids are kept entertained while mum and dad relax.

and weddings, as well as conferences and training events. “We opened Madison’s about two years ago and it’s been very well received,” Jeanine says. “We have regular wine dinners hosted by various wine companies and we’re looking forward to our Melbourne Cup lunch in November where we have our own in-house fashions on the field with great prizes and show the race on two big screens. The last two years have been a great success with close to 200 people each year.” Always committed to improving their overall product, a recent kitchen revamp and change of menu at Dylan’s Bistro has received glowing feedback from patrons who love the choice of meals now offered. “We’ve now got a fantastic team in the kitchen and the meals are the best they’ve been for a long time,” Jeanine says. “We’ve still got the pub favourites but the “Chef ’s Selections” the team are serving up are sensational.”

Big sporting events are always popular too at the Red Beret Hotel. With big screens throughout the venue, everyone can watch the event and be part of the great atmosphere as the crowd cheers along. “It gives you goosebumps,” Jeanine says. “Tom and I are also passionate about giving back to the community and the hotel sponsors many junior and senior sporting teams. We run our Friday night Goose Club to help those teams raise money and regular raffles throughout the week as well. We also put our hand up to help with charity fundraisers wherever possible. “The hotel and staff are our family. We want to keep it as an iconic venue and something all of our guests feel they’re part of.”
BRANDTREE BROTHERS BRANCH OUT
After years of working with people to create and build successful brands in Cairns and North Queensland, Brandtree Directors and brothers Daniel and Nick are proud to announce the opening of their Brandtree branch in Redcliffe, Brisbane. Although a large majority of our clients are right here in the Cairns region, we are also committed to key clients in both rural and South East Queensland.” “By opening an office in Brisbane, we really plan to create a strong synergy between Far North Queensland and South East Queensland businesses, taking the innovations from each region and sharing this across both sites and locations.” Nick explains that he sees the benefits from the expansion CairnsLife 24 Magazine

CAIRNS IS ‘THRIVING’ Cairns Regional Council’s Thrive and Survive water saving campaign has been receiving a very positive response from the community since it started a year ago. The campaign is designed to raise awareness of water conservation by recognising that plants survive with less water than we think they need. To enhance the campaign, Council launched a Schools Water Education Program called WaterWhys Cairns at a Teachers Link event on October 11, and its rollout aligns with National Water Week’s 2017 theme, The Heart of our Culture.
Its mascot, Ginger will be making appearances at upcoming events where people will be able to make a water saving pledge on Council’s Thrive photo board and #ThriveCairns. If you’re revamping a section of your garden or adding some new plants, don’t forget to check out Council’s Thrive App to look at the watering requirements of different plants. A new drought-tolerant plant category has recently been added to the App. It’s also a great and easy reference to check when you can use sprinklers for those drier days. Simply search for “Thrive Cairns” at Google Play or App stores.
“
People often underestimate just how resilient native plants, in particular, are to the changing seasons,” Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said. “In most cases, they need less watering that you might think. The mobile App will help people determine how much water their garden really needs and how to choose plants that are less reliant on water.

The program will provide every school in the Cairns region with resources enabling teachers to deliver engaging, meaningful in-school learning experiences with fun, hands-on, interactive activities linked to the Australian Curriculum as well as Council’s unique local water campaign and initiatives.
Activities include topics such as monitoring rainfall to track when we need to be watering our gardens, home and school water audits to help identify water savings as well as experiments to investigate Cairns water treatment and supply.

ARTS TaNKsCENTRE
Josh Pyke is no stranger to Cairns. He’s been a well-loved regular fixture at Tanks Arts Centre for half a decade. So naturally, it has come as a bit of shock for some of his far northern fans to learn that when he graces the Tanks stage in December, it will be his last show for a while. Early this year, Josh announced that he’ll be hanging up his ‘Josh Pyke boots’ to take an indefinite break from performing his own original music. To celebrate his illustrious career and to say ‘goodbye for now,’ Josh is embarking on a massive regional tour of Australia in November and December, performing his album Memories & Dust in full, alongside a second set packed with fan favourites.
JOSH PYKE
10 YEARS OF MEMORIES AND DUST REGIONAL TOUR 2017
It will be Josh’s fourth appearance in five years when he stops in to Tanks on December 2; a venue that Josh not only admires, but has fond memories of. “I had some old friends who lived in Cairns for years and so coming here was always a chance to catch up with them,” Josh says. “They brought their first kid to my gig here and that was very special!” “I think repurposing spaces for the arts is a brilliant idea. It’s very in line with creative thinking and it’s making something positive out of something that may have otherwise had negative connotations.”
SATURDAY 2 DECEMBER One of Australia’s favourite storytellers, Josh Pyke is embarking on a regional tour of Australia alongside the news that he’ll be hanging up his Josh Pyke boots and going on hiatus. Josh’s breakthrough single Middle of the Hill made it to #19 on triple j’s 2005 Hottest 100. Since then he has released 5 studio albums with his latest But For All These Shrinking Hearts debuted at #2 on the ARIA chart and #1 on the Australian charts, making it his highest debut placement and fifth top-10 release in a row. Throughout his career Josh has received four ARIA Awards and has had nine songs in triple j’s Hottest 100. Known for selling out tours, Josh’s ability to actively engage his audience drives fans to return year after year to witness his onstage presence. Don’t miss the chance to experience the magic of this performer when he says ‘goodbye for now’. His intelligent lyrics, warm melodies and quirky song structures place him in a league of his own.
COST: $42 / $36.75 (CONC) inc b/fee (PG) VENUE: Tank 5 - seated / standing SHOW STARTS: 7:00pm
Josh Pyke has been a part of the Australian music landscape for more than a decade. Well-loved for his intricate storytelling, thoughtful folk pop arrangements and finely honed stage chops, Josh has released five studio albums, all of which have gained prestigious accolades and critical acclaim. But despite being at the height of his career, Josh is welcoming the break with open arms. “I’ve loved every second of touring in the last 13 years, but with the release of my Best Of album it felt like the right time to take a pause and focus on some other things for a while,” he says. “I’m not 100% sure yet what the break will entail, but I feel excited and very blessed to have the opportunity,” he says. Old fans, new fans and those keen to check out Josh for the first time before he takes his indefinite hiatus at the end of the year, will be treated to an intimate show of just Josh on stage without his band. And for his adoring fans that never miss a chance to catch Josh at the Tanks, he assures them that the time-out is not permanent. “I reckon it’s about an 88.5% promise that everything will return to normal in a couple of years!”

DOC FEELS WRIGHT AT HOME DR TOM WRIGHT WHEN it comes to ensuring the wellbeing of pregnant women in Cairns, Dr Tom Wright is practically a household name. The experienced gynaecologist and obstetrician has delivered generations of babies in the city, often bumping into the very families he helped care for all those years ago.
“On a professional level, it’s big enough to have access to all the specialists you need and small enough that my patients recognise me in the shopping centre.” These days, Tom’s newly refurbished practice at Flecker House sees a broad spectrum of obstetric and gynaecology patients who appreciate his expert care and understanding.
“It’s certainly been a privilege to work in obstetrics and gynaecology in Cairns,” Tom says.
“I prefer the one-on-one interaction you have with a patient in private practice,” he says.
“I’m now delivering babies to the children that I delivered 20 years ago.”
“You take them through their whole pregnancy journey. It’s more impersonal in the public system.”
With more than 30 years of specialist experience in obstetrics and gynaecology, Tom arrived in Cairns in 1990, working in both private practice and previously as a visiting medical officer to Cairns Hospital.
Indeed, Tom is proud to continue in the tradition of Cairns gynaecology pioneer Dr Robert Ellwood, planning to stay put for many years to come.
“On a personal level, Cairns is a great place to live and raise a family. You’ve got the Reef, the Tablelands and the Rainforest,” he says.
“I enjoy my work, I look forward to coming in every day and have no intention of retiring,” he says. “I’m definitely here to stay.”

BRAINWAVES
PHONE: 4031 0438 90 Hoare Street Manunda www: mindmatterscairns.com.au
Brainwaves At the root of all our thoughts, emotions and behaviours is the communication between neurons within our brains. Brainwaves are produced by synchronised electrical pulses from masses of neurons communicating with each other. Up until very recently it was believed that these neurons and connections were fixed during childhood. The saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is an example of the belief that the brain is rigid and unchanging. In the last 20 or so years however there have been major breakthroughs in brain research. The discovery of Neuroplasticity; the brain’s natural ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural pathways and connections throughout life from childhood to old age, has seen the development of exciting new therapies that address brain related problems at their core. Neurofeedback is one such treatment that is now being successfully used to treat a number of disorders including Anxiety, Depression, Learning Disorders, Sleep problems and symptoms associated with ADHD and ASD. Neurofeedback Neurofeedback is a technology based learning technique that uses a computer to give information to a person about his or her own brainwave pattern. All information being processed in the brain is being transmitted by brainwaves, in a similar way to radio waves. Slow brainwaves can carry information about being calm and sleepy, fast waves carry information about focus and attention, and very fast waves carry information about excitement, anxiety, and agitation. When there are too many of a particular brainwave, people will struggle. The reason Neurofeedback is able to work well with a variety of disorders is because many disorders show a dysregulation of brainwave activity.

One or two sensors are placed on the client’s head, and two sensors (like clip-on earrings) are placed on their ears. The sensors are connected to an amplifier, which amplifies the tiny (microvolt) signals from the client’s scalp. The amplified signal is then sent to a computer that analyses it and divides it into the brainwaves we want to train. The Neurofeedback software uses these signals to drive a video game. The video game only moves forward (visual display changes, beeps are heard, points are scored) if the client increases or decreases the brainwaves in accordance with the training protocols. With repeated trainings in this way, the brain learns to control attention and focus better. Commitment Neurofeedback is not like fast acting medication. The brain takes many years to learn to function the way it does so it will take some time and effort for it to learn to rewire itself. When making the decision to commence Neurofeedback, you undertake to commit to two half hour sessions per week for fifteen weeks (30 sessions). Research shows that once brainwaves have been stabilized, there is little tendency for the gains to be lost. In follow up studies, children who had received Neurofeedback training were retested every year for three years and showed no decline in their ability to sustain focus and attention.
LOOK AND FEEL GREAT
DR ISOLDE HERTESS
SURGICAL precision and impressive results are all in a day’s work for the team at Cairns Plastic Surgery. Whether it’s cosmetic enhancements or reconstructive surgery, practice owner Dr Isolde Hertess is as passionate about making her patients feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. “The work we do is life-changing. We see it every day,” she says. “We are certainly able to fulfil most people’s needs and expectations after surgery.” With more than 20 years experience in the industry, Dr Hertess has an abundance of knowledge in plastic and reconstructive surgery. She obtained her specialist qualification as a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in the division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1994 and, more recently, obtained her Australian Dermatology Diploma in 2014. Better yet, the advantage of having the practice located in the heart of Cairns means patients do not have to travel south to bigger cities or overseas to have professional work done. “It’s a safer and more secure option to have such procedures done locally,” Isolde says. “We are always here to support our patients after they have their surgery, which is certainly an advantage over having your surgeon located elsewhere.” Conveniently located in the Cairns Medical Specialist Centre opposite Cairns Private Hospital, the practice offers several surgical procedures, including breast augmentation, breast reduction, all breast implant related surgeries, face and neck lift, labiaplasty, wrinkle injectable treatments and much, much more. All non-surgical injectable treatments are performed by highly trained and skilled nursing staff who are under the doctor’s guidance. “We’re also doing a lot of facial surgery and in particular skin cancers that require precision to achieve the best possible results with hidden scars.” Isolde adds. “We have lots of positive feedback and many happy patients.” Heading a team of three nurses and four administration staff, Isolde says the utmost care is taken to ensure the patient’s needs are put first. Photo by Silvia Mogorovich
“My staff are very approachable and provide a lot of education to our patients. Our nurses are very caring and I think that’s what sets us apart,” Isolde says. “We try and give them a realistic expectation of what to expect during and after surgery.

MAKE THAT PAIN GO AWAY For more information, visit www.orthoshep.com or call 4031 8400.
WHEN it comes to relieving muscle, ligament or joint pain, Dr David Shepherd is the man you need to see.
“Some of the things we can now do have a dramatic effect on the patient,” David says.
The straight-shooting Cairns orthopaedic surgeon will accurately assess and diagnose your problem, clearly explaining what treatment options are available.
“A common problem for people is osteoarthritis and over a period of time they just gradually get to the point where they can’t get around easily enough anymore because of that joint pain.
“My approach is to first be thorough. I’ll take into account their medical history, examine the patient and look at the investigation so you can come to a secure diagnosis,” David says. “Once you’ve got that, you know where the patient is now and you can tell them straight up. A lot of people find that very useful. “One of things I’m focused on is patient safety, to get them through a period of care without any misadventures and doing things to minimise the chance of that.” David is able to treat any number of orthopaedic disorders a patient might suffer from, including osteoarthritis, torn meniscus, ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, rotator cuff syndrome, dislocated and frozen shoulders, mechanical back pain and nerve root compression.
CairnsLife 33 Magazine
“You can do a joint replacement for them and they can get back to being mobile again.” Knee, hip and shoulder replacements are commonly treated by David at his Flecker House practice, with shoulder surgery itself making great strides in recent decades. “We’ve now got a number of diagnostic tests we can do that will actually work out what the issue is,” he says. “And there’s a number of shoulder operations developed over the past 15 or 20 years that are now widespread and make treatment possible.” Born in Mareeba and raised in Cairns, David has been in private practice since the late 1990s and hopes to continue improving the lives of the many patients he sees for years to come.

CONNECT WITH THE EXPERTS IMPROVING your level of hearing can be life-changing. Just ask the experts at Connect Hearing Cairns. The Hearing Centre, which has been running for more than 15 years, regularly sees those in need of hearing testing and assessments, hearing aids, listening devices, ear protection and much more. Connect Hearing Queensland manager Sarah Brown says people often take for granted their own level of hearing, making a check-up even more important. “Everybody knows to get their eyes or blood pressure checked but a hearing check seems to fall through the cracks,” she says. “By the time you really notice that you can’t hear very well anymore, it may have deteriorated significantly as your brain is good at adapting to hearing loss. “The best time to address any hearing loss is as early as possible.” Hearing aids are available at the centre for any client suffering mild to
profound hearing loss, with Connect Hearing also offering Lyric, a revolutionary 100% invisible hearing aid. “There’s no need to change batteries and it’s completely invisible,” Sarah says. “Our clients that have it absolutely love it.” Seeing a wide range of clients from children through to pensioners, the Connect Hearing Cairns has an experienced team of hearing care professionals, and offers some of the best hearing products on the market. With a free hearing aid trial also available to clients for complete piece of mind, it’s no surprise that the centre is one of Connect Hearing’s busiest in the country. “It really has developed a great reputation in Cairns and our clients appreciate the high level of service we provide,” says Sarah “We are confident you will love our team, so please call the clinic and mention this article to book in for a free hearing assessment, and see what we have to offer.”
KYLE RICHARDSON PUTTING FEET FIRST GETTING you running, jumping and walking pain free is all in a day’s work for the team at FNQ Podiatry and Orthotics. Founded by director and principal podiatrist Kyle Richardson in May 2015, the business offers a full suite of treatment options for lower limb and foot conditions including heel pain, shin splints, ankle sprains, bunions, achilles pain, ingrown toenails and much more.
“Our point of difference is our comprehensive biomechanical assessments which utilise the latest Podiatric technology from Europe” explains Kyle. “Rather than just simply providing a band-aid treatment for the presenting injury, our assessment is based around determining the contributing factors that caused it in the first place. We then develop a targeted treatment program that looks at addressing all of these factors to help not only treat the injury but also minimise the risk of it or any others returning again”.
The team at FNQ Podiatry & Orthotics are also busy out of the clinic, being the official podiatrists for the Cairns Taipans and the Northern Pride. “The sports and biomechanical field of podiatry continues to grow as people are starting to realise the importance of their feet and the impact they have on the rest of their body,” Kyle says. “Around 25% of our patients who come in for biomechanical/running assessments are pain free and just wanting technique improvements. This is fantastic as it shows how people are now starting to be proactive about their health and trying to reduce their risk of injury via preventative care”. With two full-time clinics in Redlynch and Edmonton and two part-time clinics in Mareeba and Innisfail, FNQ Podiatry and Orthotics services a wide range of patients and their specific conditions. DR PHOEBE HONG PASSION FOR
HELPING OTHERS
A LOVE of Cairns and a dedication to improving the health of her patients is what defines Dr Phoebe Hong. The specialist obstetrician, gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon offers flexible treatment options together with care and understanding of what can be a sensitive issue for many women. “I think I’m approachable. My patients can easily ask me any questions and I explain the process very thoroughly, such as talking about what to expect during and after surgery,” Phoebe says. “What my patients love most about my approach is I’m not doctor-like. I’ve got my own sense of humour and I can relate to them. That puts them right at ease.” After graduating with a medical degree from the University of Auckland in 2006, Phoebe commenced specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology before deciding to head across the ditch to work at Cairns Hospital. It was during her time there that she fell in love with Cairns and its friendly, welcoming atmosphere. “My husband and I have always wanted to live in a smaller place, away from metropolitan cities, and Cairns is just perfect from every aspect,” she says. Wishing to provide more women in the Far North with access to advanced laparoscopy, Phoebe then moved south to complete a two-year fellowship in Advanced Hysteroscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeries. Upon her return to Cairns, the bubbly surgeon started her own private practice at Flecker House and hasn’t looked back since. “Working in private practice, there’s more continuous care. You get to build that relationship and seeing their health improve under your care is very rewarding. That’s what I enjoy most,” she says. Indeed, Phoebe is passionate about her field and its potential to change lives with the right treatment. She is also one of the few medical professionals in Cairns to offer advanced gynaecology laparoscopic surgery or keyhole surgery – a minimally invasive alternative which covers several procedures including severe endometriosis, fibroid removal (myomectomy), and cerclage (cervical suture).
For more information, visit www.drphoebehong.com.au or search “Dr Phoebe Hong” on Facebook.
“In the past women would have had to travel to Townsville or Brisbane for advanced gynaecology laparoscopic surgery, so now I’m able to offer it here locally,” she says. In December, Phoebe will be moving into her own stand-alone practice at Central Plaza Doctors, continuing to serve a growing number of patients.

We are unique in the profession for a number of reasons. We are the only Practice in Australia with three generations of family involvement with each generation having served on a National Peak Professional Board. A little known fact is that less than 17% of the profession are currently Australian and privately owned with the majority of clinics being part of a large corporate chain owned overseas. Our people benefit from the widest possible selection of hearing solutions. If it is available in Australia we offer it. We can source product worldwide too. In fact, we’ve been the first clinic in Australia to launch new innovative hearing solutions. This coupled with affordability, interest-free repayment plans,

Clients sense are genuine desire to make a difference and often comment on the atmosphere in our clinics in the most positive way. Despite the fact we are all extremely busy the overwhelming feeling from our clients is that they are appreciated, listened to and are in good hands. We recently had the privilege of fitting an Australian icon and musician, Kamahl who choose to come to us at because of our outstanding service. We fitted him with the latest technology and he loves being able to fully appreciate the rich sounds of music again and to participate in conversation without having to ask people to repeat themselves. I enjoyed a luncheon with Kamahl in a very noisy restaurant and he didn’t miss a word. Rather it was I who had to strain to listen to the words of the poem Desiderata which he recited to me! But people like our very elderly lady of 101 years of age are every bit as important. She is over the moon with her newfound hearing, freedom and enjoyment of life. We’ve opened up a whole new world to this lady. Age is no barrier. There’s never a better time to improve your hearing and your quality of life with so many products delivering outstanding results.

A WEALTH of knowledge and experience you can trust has Cairns’ newest medical practice taking off. Run by the highly credentialed surgeon Dr Suki Ahluwalia, Coral Sea Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) offers a range of treatments for all referred patients. Head and neck cancer treatment, paediatrics, laryngology and voice and facial plastic surgery are also performed by Dr Suki. The experienced practitioner began his career at London’s prestigious University College and Imperial College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and a Bachelor of Science. In 2006, Dr Suki was awarded a place on the UK’s foremost, highly competitive specialist training program in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. It was in this program where he studied and trained under some of the world’s best professors and surgeons in otology, rhinology and sinus surgery, laryngology, head and neck cancer surgery, paediatric ENT and facial plastic surgery. In 2010 he was awarded and admitted to the Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. Travelling to Australia in 2012 to commence his ENT fellowship training at the Princess Alexandra and Logan hospitals in Brisbane, Dr Suki gained extensive experience in head
and neck cancer surgery and general ENT training. He also gained experience in the management of indigenous hearing problems through the “Deadly Ears” outreach program. The program provides visiting medical services to the aboriginal and indigenous populations of Australia. “This focuses on the hearing needs of children in remote and regional places and involves a small team travelling to a remote area for a week and setting up a theatre and clinics to treat children and adults with hearing difficulties,” Dr Suki explains. “I found this work very interesting and rewarding and plan to continue to assist in humanitarian and outreach community work in the future.” Following his outreach experience, Dr Suki enjoyed a stint in Townsville before moving to Cairns and starting his own practice. GAME CHANGER IN HEALTH INDUSTRY
CRYO AUSTRALIA CAIRNS
While Cryo Australia Cairns is quickly gaining popularity as the place to go to feel rejuvenated, invigorated and healthier than ever before with its Cryotherapy treatments, there are other aspects to the business which also have amazing health benefits. iRefresh Vitamin therapy is A modern hydration and nutritional therapy using vitamin and mineral intravenous infusions. “The iV iRefresh therapy is fantastic” Cryo Australia Cairns owner Peter Daley said. “It’s great for rehydration, boosting the immune system, jetlag, detoxifying the body, hangovers, increasing energy levels and improving general wellness.” Unlike vitamins and minerals that are taken orally, which are partially lost through the digestive processes, iRefresh IV Treatments ensure 100 per cent of the vitamins and minerals go straight into your bloodstream with immediate and noticeable results. The six different IV Infusions are: Simple Hydration, Vitamin C Cocktail, Energy Boost, Skin Lightening Cocktail (to remove skin blemishes), Myers Cocktail and the ultimate IV Infusion – Royal Refresh. Cryotherapy is cutting edge technology that uses sub zero temperatures for weight loss, improving recovery up to eight times faster from injuries, decreasing pain, slowing cell ageing and enhancing overall health, to name just some of its amazing benefits. Cryo Sculpting Fat Freeze is another service offered at Cryo Australia. This non-invasive and drug-free treatment uses sub zero temperature technology to spot reduce fat in stubborn areas such as stomach, love handles, back, thighs, chin, bra rolls, arms etc. “The best thing is that this treatment is extremely affordable compared to any other competitor on the market,” Mr Daley said.

WHEN it comes to sourcing the right equipment for your practice with service you can depend on, look no further than Medical Dental Solutions.
the practice’s operations,” Brendan says.
The Queensland-wide company, which has a local office right here in Cairns, provides an extensive range of medical, dental, veterinary, podiatry and sterilization equipment.
After years of servicing medical and dental practices in Cairns from Townsville, the business established an office in the city in 2012 following increasing demand.
Office director and senior service technician Brendan Stent says the business has developed a strong reputation amongst the Far North’s medical and dental fraternity thanks to its wide equipment offering and stellar after-sales support. “Our customers really appreciate the quality of our service,” he says. “We prioritise service and repair jobs according to the critical importance of the equipment to the customer’s operations, which is similar to triaging casualties in an emergency department. “For example, a piece of critical equipment that is out of action and stopping a customer’s normal business operations would take priority over a scheduled routine service booking.” Flexibility is also a focus of Medical Dental Solutions, who are able to provide practices with loan equipment in the event their existing equipment malfunctions and needs to be repaired. “Our objective is to minimise disruption to CairnsLife 40 Magazine
“We’re also able to do work after-hours and on weekends.”
With sales continuing to grow, Medical Dental Solutions is even considering increasing staff to cater for a diverse number of clients across the wider Cairns region, encompassing Tully north to Cape York. The company also has offices in Brisbane, Townsville, Rockhampton and Mackay. Staff on the Cairns team have extensive military and civilian medical backgrounds, giving piece of mind to their customers. “We have a better understanding of the importance of specific equipment,” says Brendan, who served in the Australian army as an aviation crash rescue medic. “Our customers have seen the difference when equipment hasn’t been looked after compared to our high standards of maintenance.” Brendan says no piece of medical equipment is too hard to find for the business, with staff always willing and able to source whatever a practice requires to do their job effectively and efficiently. “We can help just about anyone in the health industry,” he says.

Cairns Urology has also made major advances in the early detection of prostate cancer. Dr Gordon trained in multiparametic MRI in the Netherlands under the Professor Dr. Jelle Barentsz, a world leader in this field.

RAISING THE BAR CA F É C H INA
Café China is renowned for providing exceptional Chinese food in Cairns for the past 25 years and now it has raised the bar even higher with the addition of high-quality local beef delivered straight from the paddock to your plate. The award-winning restaurant now serves KUR-Cow beef, grown locally on the Tablelands using its own breeding program designed to create premium standards in all beef cuts. KUR-Cow covers breeding, weaning, joining and fattening. By controlling the entire process they also control the quality. The breeding program is designed to yield highest grade beefs which can also manage the harsher conditions of the Tropical North. Café China is very excited to be associated with KUR-Cow and presenting new quality grade beef cuts to the local market in Cairns to enjoy.
“It’s a very special and delicious meat,” said Harry Sou from Café China, “We are probably the first restaurant in Cairns to put the beef that we grow ourselves on the plate.” Café China is one of the first restaurants to offer the new beef although it is expected to feature on many more restaurant menus in the near future. KURCow has distributions both locally and abroad. “We are very lucky to have this product to serve to our guests,” Harry said. “They are prime beef cuts and are loved by our customers.” Café China Seafood Restaurant Main Foyer, The Reef Hotel Casino, 35-41 Wharf St, Cairns city Ph: 4041 2828

SMART NEW WAY TO GIVE WITH A CHERRY ON TOP CHE RRYG I F T
Monday, 12 September, 2016. NEW online platform cherrygift is set to revolutionise the universal tradition of gift-giving with an innovative SMS gift voucher service that enables people to ‘give’ and ‘receive’ in an instant. Created with the millennial generation in mind, cherrygift is the solution for every well-intentioned, yet busy smartphone user, who has ever left it too late to organise a gift to arrive in time for a special occasion. Developed over 12 months by young Cairns- based entrepreneur Fiona McFarlane, cherrygift is the simple, convenient and sustainable way for customers from anywhere around the world to buy virtual gift vouchers, which are sent as a text message to the recipient’s smartphone in Australia. “There’s an expectation of this millennial generation that every need should be catered for at the press of a few key strokes – online shopping, booking an airfare, watching a movie, listening to music – yet buying a gift voucher is still a tedious exercise,” Ms McFarlane said. “You know how it goes, you want a nice spa voucher for your mum from that lovely little place she likes, but they don’t really use computers and want you to come in and buy their beautifully packaged plastic voucher in a folder. Not very 21st century at all, and discarded single-use plastic piling up into a sad mountain.” “My aim is for cherrygift to become established as the easiest way to digitally send the perfect gift for any occasion from our one-stop gift voucher shop. In just seconds, you can send instant happiness with a gift voucher delivered straight to the recipient’s smartphone, or use the scheduling feature to have the voucher sent on a future date. We want to save the environment, one cherrygift at a time,” she said.
CairnsLife 46 Magazine
cherrygift vouchers are purchased online via a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer for a nominated value, then digitally sent with a personal message to an Australian mobile phone number. Ready to use immediately, the voucher is then redeemed when the recipient presents their smartphone at the selected outlet to choose their gift or book their experience, with the supplier using a unique code to validate its use. Each voucher is valid for twelve months from the date it is received, with a reminder SMS automatically sent after six months if the voucher has not yet been redeemed. The website allows users to search gifts by location in every Australian state and territory, while also categorising vouchers most suitable for women, men or couples. For suppliers, cherrygift offers an opportunity to grow their business by tapping into Australia’s lucrative giftcard market, worth more than $2.5 billion annually. “While cherrygift has the capacity to work for any size of business, the opportunity for quality boutique operators to diversify and reap the nancial rewards of gift cards without the extra paperwork and administration usually involved is very exciting and ful lling,” Ms McFarlane said. cherrygift is the most recent venture for Ms McFarlane, a dynamic young businesswoman who also serves as managing director of niche digital marketing business, Gateway Media Group, and is the National President of peak International tourism networking association, Skal Australia. ‘EXPLOSIVE’ FUN for the whole family
BIG guns, powerful machines and a healthy dose of nostalgia are all on offer at the Australian Armour and Artillery Museum. Based at Smithfield just north of Cairns, the museum boasts the largest collection of tanks, artillery pieces and armoured vehicles in the southern hemisphere and is attracting plenty of interest from locals and tourists alike. Museum manager Dennis Tocock says a widespread interest in wartime history has attracted tens of thousands of people to the museum since it first opened in September 2014. “We’ve had people come in from as far away as New Zealand, Singapore and pretty much every Australian state,” he says.
“You see a lot of people who come in here who had family members who served aboard tanks or armoured vehicles and they never realised what is truly like. It’s a very emotional experience for them.” The brainchild of local businessman Rob Lowden, the museum features more than 140 exhibits from World War I right through to the Cold War, with fans of each era often spending hours pouring over dozens of meticulously restored tanks, armoured vehicles or artillery pieces. “Generally, people are in awe when they come out and see these exhibits up close,” Dennis says. “They realise how big they are on the outside but then they take a look inside and can’t understand how people actually fought in them.
Words by Michael Serenc | Photos by Silvia Mogorovich
“This museum gives us a chance to preserve these icons for future generations and helps them understand what our previous servicemen and women have been through.” Visitors can expect to find exhibits from all over the world, including Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Japan and many more. Rides in an armoured vehicle are also offered as is the chance to experience firing a genuine military boltaction rifle in the museum’s shooting gallery. More recently, the museum held its third annual AusArmourfest weekend in September, which saw more than 1200 people pass through the gates to view the many exhibits on display and participate in some 600 tank rides. International video game developer Wargaming.net was also on hand to provide visitors a cutaway 3D view of a German World War II-era Sturmtiger tank using Virtual Reality (VR) goggles.
“
GENERALLY, PEOPLE ARE IN AWE WHEN THEY COME OUT AND SEE THESE EXHIBITS UP CLOSE”
With about 14 staff and volunteers helping to run the museum, Dennis says there are some exciting plans for expansion already underway including a 1000m2 extension to be finished in October and a further 3200m2 extension being built next year. “We will effectively double in size within the next 12 months,” he says. “We’ve had 67,000 visitors come through since we’ve opened and our numbers are increasing each year.”

MATCH? There are two types of women in the world those who match the mani and pedi and those who don’t. Manicures and pedicures don’t have to match with the exact same shades these days. Go ahead and mix it up! Sometimes the colour you chose for your hand may not match your feet or shoe choice. Nude on your finger nails and red on your toes work beautifully together contrasting and stylish along with softer shades of the same colour will work.

THE JOURNEY TO YOU Many of our customers are extremely discerning about all the products that they buy. They are interested in discovering their provenance and learning of the various processes and refinements that the raw materials have been through in order to create the high quality furniture that they are taking into their homes. We are particularly proud of the way in which our materials are sourced and the traditional ways in which our furniture is crafted and finished, so we are always happy to share the journey with anyone who is intrigued. Most of our wood is larch, pine, fir and assorted semi hardwoods reclaimed from discarded packing crates, pallets and dismantled buildings. After the wood has been collected and sorted, we removed all nails and debris by hand. The recycled wood is kiln dried to exacting specifications, the offcut timber being used to fuel the kilns and boilers. Strict control of moisture content ensures there will be no warping or splitting. Each product is assembled by hand and finely sanded. Original nail holes and imperfections are retained to enhance the character of the wood. By using traditional joinery techniques we assure longevity. Our hand brushing technique creates a unique patina, colour and feeling of warmth. Some of our finishes take up to a year to research, test and perfect. The result is furniture which will add character and style to any home. We design every product ourselves, and comply with all international safety standards and always focus on environmental sustainability. The PGT-RECLAIMED label provides customers with complete peace of mind.

WE NEED TO BUILD MORE NEW INVESTMENT HOMES ….
NOW
R OSLY N S M IT H
‘ Wom en in Bu i l d i n g ’ Winne r Q M BA 2016
Awa r d
The Far North Queensland and Cairns market is poised for a real boost on construction in the near future that is being led by the commercial sector. A recent Queensland Master Builders report highlighted projects like the Botanica Residential Project at Caravonica; the GA Group’s and Nova City projects in Cairns city; more student accommodation at JCU campus; MSF Clean Green Energy initiative to 3 sites; Mt Peter Residential Precinct; Mt Emerald Wind Farm as well as development in new industrial precincts and the Cairns Harbour. This is great news for us all but the question arises ‘where are all these construction workers and future employees going to live’. Predictions are that our Cairns population will increase by around 35% in the next 20 years. The rental vacancy rate for housing in Cairns is currently running at around 1.8% and units around 1.6% according to last month’s Cairns watch released by Herron Todd White Valuers. 5 years ago the rental vacancy rate for houses was over 5%. So we haven’t been building many new investment homes for the rental market in the Cairns and FNQ area in recent years. Now we need to or we won’t have anywhere for these people moving to our region to live. Building an investment home is different to building your own new home. There are tax advantages that may suit you and the best person to advise on that is your accountant. A new property will increase in value over time, so you may decide to hang on to something for the long haul or possibly sell in a few years’ time. I always advise that you should be more objective with an investment property and you
need to look at what will return you the best rent. By that I mean don’t spend money on lots of extras in the home that will not increase the overall rental return. Finishes, inclusions and fixture should be selected to make it practical and comfortable. Prospective tenants have to be able to imagine themselves and their family living there, easily. Building a new investment home has many advantages compared with purchasing an existing home. New homes are built to the latest building standards and codes, which is extremely important when we live in a cyclonic region. New homes come with contractual builders warranty on structure, services and workmanship which translates to reduced maintenance expenses for the owner; whether it’s your own home or an investment property, and that means more money in your pocket. I always say that the best time to build is now and in this case you can be ahead of that rental market. We have many House and Land packages and also some small duplex and 4 unit development packages ready to go now that are aimed directly at investors. PLANNING YOUR NEW LIFE AFTER SEPARATION SUZANNE HADLEY
The very real pain of separation and the process of separating is difficult but from this ending will come a new beginning, the beginning of your new life after separation. You started your married life with Plan A, a rosy future of a happy family life and a happy relationship. When your life plan, “Plan A” changes, its time to make Plan B. None of us start our marriages, our relationships, with a Plan B in mind, but that is what separation calls for - making and carrying out Plan B - planning your new life after separation. Plan B is a team effort. You cannot do it alone and you are not expected to do it alone. I’ve put together some tips to help you get through this, to help you establish a good support team. Should the time come for you to go to Plan B, a good support team is essential to help you plan your new life after separation. Accept that there is grief, immense grief, at the loss of the relationship, the end of your role in that relationship, the ‘me’ instead of the ‘we’. Giving yourself permission to grieve for the loss of the relationship is an important step in accepting the reality of your new life. Step one is getting yourself a good psychologist or counsellor who can help you deal with the inevitable grief at the loss of the relationship and help you move towards planning your new life. Those who view the ending of their relationship as an opportunity to take hold of their life and make it into what they really want, who open themselves to new experiences and new opportunities, are able to survive the changes separation brings much more readily than those who continue to see themselves as the victim of the separation.
Being active in planning your new life is essential, rather than waiting for a new life to come to you. In business we say “ if you fail to plan you plan to fail.” In life, the failure to plan for your new life leaves you the victim your past life, not the owner of your new life. Find a specialist family lawyer to help negotiate a settlement dividing the assets without going to court, staying civilised in the face of an often hostile ex-partner and focusing on what’s most important in the outcome, particularly where children are involved. It is important to distinguish between what’s a property discussion and what’s a parenting discussion. The division of assets is not linked to parenting issues. Focus on the best outcome for the children in parenting and what is fair in property division. Planning that new life after separation is important. The reality of separation is that your financial circumstances will change. The joint income that supported one household now supports two households often unequally. The bills will still come in, mortgages must be paid, school fees never seem to stop and the list goes on. Talk about your finances with a professional, your accountant or a good financial planner. This is particularly important as you work towards a property division. Becoming familiar with your finances and what is possible in your changed circumstances will help you in planning your new life. Superannuation and insurance is part of that new life and good advice is needed here. Separation is the ending of your previous life, but it’s also the beginning of a new life - make it the one you want by making that plan B.

TOP TIPS FOR WRITING THE PERFECT COVER LETTER EVA GRABNER
Providing an unrivalled one-on-one bespoke service, Eva Grabner is the changing face of the recruitment industry. As an Executive Recruiter and Search Consultant with over a decade of experience, Eva works alongside her clients to understand their business and culture. With an extensive global network and current knowledge on market conditions, Eva quickly identifies the best high performing candidates for her clients, and works closely with both parties to ensure a seamless transition.
In my line of work, I see a lot of cover letters. In fact, I use cover letters as a way of shortlisting candidates very quickly. Every one of our company adverts will ask an applicant to provide a cover letter. Those that don’t, well .. into the ‘No’ pile they go! Why? Because if you can’t read a job advertisement and follow a basic instruction, then you’re clearly not the kind of person I think is up to more challenging tasks! What’s with cover letters? Are they necessary? Yes, they are. Some hiring managers consider them to be the most important part of your application. And while it would be easier to let your resume speak for itself, if that was the case then you would completely miss an opportunity to tell prospective employers who you are, highlight why they should hire you and stand out above all other candidates. Look at it this way - at best a cover letter will make you stand out from the pack, at worst it can make even the most promising candidate seem like an uncreative cut-and-paster. Sadly, the vast majority of cover letters read the same: Regurgitations of resumes that ramble on repeating the obvious. Would you finish reading one of those if you started to read it? No? I didn’t think so and I don’t either. The role of your cover letter is to ensure your resume gets read. Job applications are scanned in seconds by a human eye or a piece of software. In both cases the reader is looking to see if your skills and experience match the criteria detailed in a job ad. Ready to get started? To make sure your cover letter is in perfect shape and stands out amongst the others then follow these few painless tips: • The first step is to actually read the job advert. Go through it with a highlighter or pen and mark the key words used by the employer/ recruiter. As long as you can back up your claims, make appropriate use of these words in your cover letter. • A cover letter should not be used to regurgitate your resume, it should highlight why you are a good match for the job in just three or four paragraphs.
• Tailor the cover letter to each job and if possible personalise it using the relevant manager or recruiter’s name. If it’s not outlined in the advert then call the company and find out who the hiring manager is. • Use simple, clear language and in the same font and style as your resume. • The opening paragraph should clearly state what job you are applying for and how you believe you are suitable for the role. • Paragraph two should tell the reader why they should be interested in you, this is where you expand on those key words they have outlined in the advert. • A third paragraph could highlight a career achievement or two that are relevant to the job. • Finally, close the letter politely: “Thank you for taking the time to read my application, I hope to have an opportunity to meet with you in person and discuss how I could contribute to your team”. • Last, but not least, it is vital that you ask a friend or family member to proof read the letter before you send it. Spelling and grammar mistakes are not acceptable when applying for a job. There is nothing worse than receiving a standard letter or one where the applicant has forgotten to change the name from the last employer they have applied to, so take the time to triple check these details. To show how serious you are about your career and your job search, take the time to apply to each position carefully. Don’t just send your resume out to every job advertised and remember - keep track of where it goes and to whom. It’s an important piece of your working existence and should be treated with the respect it deserves. Now go forth and write those perfect cover letters! THE POWER OF PR VIDEO GAINS MOMENTUM DAN AE J O NE S
Video is gaining momentum online like never before and if you aren’t producing video content to promote your brand, than you’d be wise to give it some consideration as it really could bring you the attention on your social media platforms that you desire. The algorithms that work in the background on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc have been set to like video content over text. So if you’re wondering why you can be on Facebook and have someone’s video delivered to your news feed time and time again when it isn’t even Sponsored/Boosted, this is why. Did you know that video achieves three times more reach for you on social media platforms? After a recent release of video content surveys globally the CEO of Animoto, Brad Jefferson (an online video creation company) said in a press release “Businesses need to learn to ‘speak video’ fluently if they want to connect with their customers on social media.” Another important note is once the video content is created, where to put it?
Danae Jo n es i s P r in c ip a l o f PR & Market i n g f i rm D a n a e J o n e s Consu l t i n g e: da n ae@ d an aej o ne s .c o m .a u w: www. d an aej o n es .c o m .a u
“The most important consideration for brands when creating and publishing videos is to look to data to make the most informed decisions on the right content and channel,” says Lux Narayan, CEO of Unmetric (a social analytics platform) There is no question that video is starting to dominate and the Wyzowl survey results confirm this. It is proven through multiple pieces of extensive research and analytics that it has also become a preferred way for people across the world to consume. In the Wyzowl survey, when consumers were asked: “Where both text and video are available on the same web page, how would you prefer to learn about a product or service?” • 80 percent said video When companies were asked ... “Does your business use video as a marketing tool?” • 63 percent said yes That means the other 37% of companies either don’t have a video strategy or they’re late and now need to play catch up. Animoto’s survey of 1,000 customers and 500 marketers about the state of social video marketing found some key insights. Video is BIG, especially on mobile devices. • 84 percent of consumers say they watch social video content on mobile devices • 81 percent of marketers say they optimise their social videos for mobile, which includes things like planning for sound-off viewing • 39 percent of marketers create videos in square and/or vertical formats
CairnsLife 67 Magazine
According to the customers in the Animoto survey, this is what they are more likely to share: • What’s funny • What’s emotional/inspirational • What’s educational And what they are more likely to like: • What’s funny • What’s emotional • “Behind-the-scenes” looks at the company The bigger finding which is something I have been preaching for years is, people are over the hard sell and hard-sells simply don’t work anymore. For business owners and managers you will always want to know about your return on investment and how many sales have been converted through your marketing activity. With online video content Wyzowl’s research shows that 64 percent of consumers say they watched a marketing video on Facebook that influenced a purchasing decision within the last month. So how does your ability to influence purchasing decisions with consumers online stack up? If you feel it needs some work, it’s not too late. It is important to note that a lot of the stats I have quoted have a dominant American consumer base. But we follow America when it comes to marketing every single time, we are literally only a year or two behind them these days. So start your planning now and get ahead of the game with your video content. In the survey Animoto conducted consumers were asked how long they were willing to watch social media videos – and these are the results: TIME

Creating quality, engaging and effective online video content is not easy and this is exactly why companies such as Animoto, PicPlayPost, Wyzowl, Adobe Premiere and many others exist. It takes time, patience, creativity and a solid content strategy to make sure your videos and other content work to serve your marketing needs. Having a professional produce it for you does not have to cost the earth either, so don’t be afraid to reach out to video producers locally as many of them now have online video content packages that they offer which are very affordable.
AMAZING HEARING! THE HUMAN EAR
The ear never rests it continues to hear sounds even while you sleep. The middle ear contains the smallest bones in the body. The malleus, incus and stapes (otherwise known as the hammer, anvil and stirrup). These are the smallest bones in the human body and are full size at birth. The whole area of the middle ear is no bigger than a chocolate M&M. The hearing range for humans is between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.
JOA N N A MAG E E
In comparison animals have a much wider range some of the frequencies being inaudible to humans. Dogs can hear sound as high as 40,000 Hz which is why they respond to “silent” dog whistles. • Cats have a hearing range between 100 and 60,000 Hz. • Dolphins can hear frequencies up to at least 100,000 Hz. • Elephants have a hearing range between 1 and 20,000 Hz. The very low frequency sounds are in the “infrasound” range. Humans cannot hear sounds in the infrasound range. • A grasshopper can hear up to 50,000 Hz. • Pigeons can detect sounds as low as 0.1 Hz. • Bats can hear frequencies between 3,000 and 120,000 Hz. • Mice can hear frequencies between 1,000 and 100,000 Hz.

Animals don’t always hear through ears like humans, for example; • Snakes have no external ears. Therefore, they do not hear the music of a “snake charmer”. Instead, they are probably responding to the movements of the snake charmer and the flute. However, sound waves may travel through bones in their heads to the middle ear. • Frogs have an eardrum (tympanic membrane) on the outside of the body behind the eye. • Crickets can hear using their legs; sound waves vibrate a thin membrane on the cricket’s front legs. • Fish do not have ears, but can hear pressure changes through ridges on their body. They collect underwater sound vibrations with an air bladder. The signals are then sent from
For humans speech which occurs in the frequency range of 250Hz to 8000Hz is very significant in that it enables us to share information, to communicate. To do this effectively we need to have hearing in the normal threshold range which is 0dB to 20 dB. We can hear with thresholds below this range but ideally this is the range for optimised communication. Unlike our fellow creatures whose lives are diminished when these thresholds drop we are uniquely able to use technology to enhance this sense and to reconnect to our communication stream again. Micro-computers dedicated to enhancing speech are now fitted into tiny casings and able to be placed deeply into the ear canal programmable to enhance the sounds that are diminished and in some cases dedicate to music. Worn discreetly and working automatically a new sense of freedom is gained and a rejuvenation of the sense of well-being by being connected again. With some of these devices being clinically proven to assist wearers to hear better in noise than their fully functioning counterparts there’s every reason to get excited about this new technology. Those clients who take the step and some wait a long time often tell me off their regret in waiting so long to take action, years and sometimes decades of missing out. We make it easy for people to come in and try our products and hear the difference for themselves. Take a free hearing check or free trial of the latest technology and assess the benefits for yourself.

The Stages of separation For many, separation is like a death - the end of a life as you knew it and with that comes grief. As with grief, there are a number of stages to the emotion of a separation:
SEPARATION WHAT TO DO IN THE EARLY DAYS NARDINE COLLIER
• Shock and denial – how can this be happening? Especially when you are not the instigator of the breakup or even worse, was not expecting it. • anger and blame - your former partner, and /or another person; or yourself. Where did I go wrong? • sadness and depression Thankfully at some point there is the healing process, an acceptance that the relationship is over and with that, the ability to face the task of sorting everything out. Then once it is all resolved, there is the ability to move on. When trying to negotiate the minefield of issues that arise after separation, it is helpful to realise that you and your former partner might be at different stages. You might have moved on but the other partner is still angry or sad; you might still be in shock and denial and feel overwhelmed coping with all of these changes, but your former partner can’t wait to sign the Divorce application!

Of course, not everyone feels this sense of loss. For some, separation is a relief and they are happier once it is done. As a mediator, we need to be mindful that people are in different emotional places when they come to mediation; that it
might be more difficult for some to have meaningful discussions about separation of property and arrangements for children. If a party to the mediation is still deeply distressed about the separation, perhaps still in denial, it is very hard for them to think clearly, make decisions and agree to permanent changes. This will be very frustrating to the person who is ready to move on. What’s the best time to start sorting out issues after separation? Unless there are urgent matters to attend to, let the dust settle for a short time. Don’t feel silly about getting some counselling, both for yourself and your children – especially your children. There are some great courses run by places like Relationships Australia for children, and for parents, helping Mums and Dads to adjust to coparenting after separation. https://www.relationships.org.au/ what-we-do/services/counselling The sooner you enrol the better, as it will help prepare you emotionally for the negotiation process. It’s also a good idea to get some legal advice early on as well. Then when you feel stronger and able to cope with negotiations, focus your efforts on finalising post-separation issues as soon as you can. (Through mediation, of course!)

PILATES THE EFFECTS ON THE MIND & BODY JAN INE N OO PE TCH
We live in a fast paced world! We are all extremely busy humans all trying to keep the balance between work, home and family life. Sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves as well as we should. Joseph Pilates - creator or Pilates stated “Physical Fitness is the first requisite of happiness” He linked that the condition of the body influences the state of the mind and the condition of the mind influences the body. Do you agree? Pilates incorporates 10 Principles as follows which requires that the Mind and Body work in harmony with each other. Awareness - being present in the moment. I am sure you all agree we are often not present in the moment, absent mind-idly checking our phones while listening to our children or spouses and not giving them the attention they deserve. How many of us do this daily? During a Pilates session — you have no choice but to be present, to focus on the breath, and engagement of correct muscles to perform the exercises with precision and control. Being present in the moment has a profound effect on our mind. Balance - Working all muscle groups and full range of motion in all directions of the body as well as achieving balance between strength and flexibility. By adding Pilates into your life, you are helping to create balance in your life between, Work, Family, Recreation. Pilates can help you to be that better person but just taking that time out for yourself 1-3 sessions per week. Breathing - A huge fundamental in Pilates Practice - Learning the Pilates breathing technique creates Rhythm for the movement as well as providing oxygen around the body and encourages you to concentrate. Breathing also calms the mind and this is why you feel so amazing after a Pilates session. One deep breath can promote relaxation, release tension and make you smile. - Give it a try — take a long deep breath now and see how you feel. Imagine one hour…… Concentration - is the link between awareness and movement however Concentration is focusing on the muscles you need to stabilise, but also blocking out the outside world for that one beautiful hour of Pilates.
Control - Pilates requires control - Pilates Equipment uses springs for resistance requiring you to control individual springs and highlights any imbalances in your body. “You need to control the springs not let the springs to control you” Centre - As you practice Pilates you will find where your centre of gravity lies. There are differences between Men and Women due to anatomical differences. Men are usually more top heavy whereas women carry more weight in their pelvic region. A women’s centre of gravity lies approximately in front of the 1st and 2nd Sacral segments in the middle of the Pelvic Bowl and with Mens slightly higher in the centre of the body opposite the navel — an interesting fact for you. Efficiency - With the help of other principles e.g. Breath, Control etc — you can work more efficiently conserving energy and focusing on the work where it is needed. Flow - Moving as seamlessly as possible from one exercise to another. Precision - A very important principle in Pilates, without precision Pilates would be pointless. Anyone that has taken a Pilates class will understand that if you are working with precision, there is only the need to 5-10 reps per exercise. There is NO need to do 20-50 reps. Technique is completely lost during that many reps and injury can occur. It is also very important to follow closely the cues given during a pilates sessions and by doing so integrates the whole body as well as isolating the certain muscles focused during a particular exercise. By incorporating all the above Pilates Principles you will create Harmony the final Pilates Principle. Tying it all together during the 1 hour session. This Harmony is the effect on the Mind and Body and walking out of a session feeling recharged, Uplifted and rejuvenated. We would love to have you in our stunning studio located in Smithfield to help you take care of yourself and achieve your Mind/ body balance. Give us a call or drop into our Studio. We look forward to working with you!

Testimony My experience of Body & Skin Care, Cairns Beaches Luxury Detox Package was one of pure pampering indulgence. The first part of the experience was to soak away all tension and stress in a wonderfully warm alkaline detox bath while listening to soothing music in an aromatherapy-scented space. While soaking in this beautiful candle-lit space, I sipped on a freshly made carrot, ginger and orange juice to support the detoxification process. Following the bath, I was treated to a rhythmic detoxification full-body massage with a Dr. Hauschka massage oil of my choice, all the while slipping further into a sense of deep relaxation. The treatment concluded with a Moor Heat wrap, where I was cocooned in specially placed heat packs and wrapped in blankets. This treatment promotes indescribable body and mind relaxation, unlike anything I’ve experienced before. This package is a must for those of us needing some ‘me time’! It also had the added bonus of helping my body lose inches of water weight from all around it. My clothes fit far more loosely after this detox package! Juliette Lachmeier Traditions Body care has been alkaline since the days of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and the Romans. These civilizations used sodium bicarbonate, milk or alkaline soaps for body care. All body care for the elderly was carried out using only soft soap with values about pH 9.0. Leaching baths lasting for several hours were a traditional part of ancient Japanese and Mexican culture and are still practiced in these countries to this day due to their benefits for overall physical and spiritual well being. “AlkaBath” bath salt with a pH value of pH 8.0 – 8.5 stand firmly in this venerable tradition. The pH level depends on the initial value and hardness of the tap water.

TAKE TIME OUT FOR YOURSELF BEFORE THE SILLY SEASON! L A BE AU T E NATUR E LLE
It is no secret these days; we’re constantly rushing and consistently busy. As soon as we get some free time, we try to organise something else in. Our whole lives are on a tight schedule, just so that we can fit a whole month into a few days. This will become more apparent in the coming weeks, as we count down to ‘silly season’. The silly season is always one of those periods, which just creates further unnecessary pressure and stress in our already busy lives. People who are often the givers within their families (you know when you’re the type) often put more pressure on themselves to cater for everyone else’s needs, whilst forgetting about their own wellbeing in the process. It is the time for sharing, however many you ‘givers’ feel nothing, but dread when it approaches and are really unsure of how you could possibly survive another ‘silly season’.
I am here to let you know that IT’S OK to STOP! BREATHE! And say NO! If you’re still unsure of how you can do it – start with these small steps, as they’re also essential skills to have: 1. Breathe – Learn to take some time out for yourself. 2. Communicate clearly about what needs to be done + how you’re going to do it 3. Be clear about your social commitments with your partner and family 4. It’s OK to say NO (and even good for you) 5. Share appreciation + gratitude with your family + friends 6. Share appreciation with yourself – You need to look after yourself ! 7. Book yourself into La Beaute Naturelle for a pamper! (OK, this one’s definitely optional, as in coming in to see us at the Sportsworld Fitness Centre, however the ‘pampering yourself bit’ is NOT!). Give Touriya Mimouni a call on 4051 2863 to book yourself in for a pamper before the stresses of the silly season get to you.
