rowing up in Cairns, I’ve been lucky to see so many businesses evolve and meet the dedicated people behind them.

We are delighted to be telling their story, one business at a time. This issue also features fashion, thanks to Cairns Central, loads of socials and preparing the team for your ideal Christmas function.

It takes great courage to start a business and it takes grit, determination and plain hard work to keep one going.

My team and I have had so much fun and madness putting together the October edition of CairnsLife.

Over the last few years, Cairns has certainly seen some tough times and I’m delighted to be profiling several of Cairns’ iconic businesses in our feature, ‘Test of Time’.

Publisher’s Note

We hope you enjoy it.

I know there is just not enough pages to profile all, however I’d like to dedicate this month to celebrate some local businesses and entrepreneurs who turn up to work each and every day to help build our beautiful city.

Test of Time A look at local businesses that have helped build the city of Cairns in this special feature

82 Grafton Street Cairns City 4031 4999 sassi.shoes

VALUE HOMES

25 years in building Cairns’ landscape looked vastly different in 1992, when builder Ralf Dutton launched his family owned and operated company Value Homes. Twenty-five years later, the award winning company has flourished successfully, responsible for project homes all over Cairns and in further regions. Ralf has an extensive range of experience in the building industry, starting as a Trainee Draftsman in 1969 for 6 years. From there he became a Contract Draftsman for a further 4 years before managing a local building company from 1980 until 1992, when he launched Value Homes. Ralf ’s expertise has helped shape Value Homes as the company it is today. In 1976, he was living in post cyclone Tracy in damaged Darwin and working on the rebuilding efforts. He has represented the building industry at both a local, state and national level, continuing to do so today. Born in Cairns, Ralf has developed the successful building company over the last twenty-five years with a team of people who all hold various roles and responsibilities. Value Homes’ close knit team are constantly working together to make the dreams of their

clients a reality. Estimators, Building Supervisors, Accounts, Technical Support, Administration and more work behind the scenes. Each person is always proud to see their results - happy clients and beautiful homes, built all over Cairns. Value Homes has recognised that there is a growing need for beautiful and affordable homes for local First Home Buyers and can offer them a house and land package for $299,985.00. Value Homes are providing exceptional designs at unbeatable prices, where people building in Cairns really can have it all - European styled appliances, stone bench tops, rectified edge tiles, security screens and so much more. Value Homes have brand new designs for First Home Buyers, who want to enjoy a home with the luxuries they love, and at an unbeatable price. To showcase this, Value Homes has just launched their brand new Display Home in Mt Peter Estate, right in time to celebrate their 25th year. This fresh development is well thought out with infrastructure, schools and parks.with views of the surrounding mountains of Edmonton, including Walsh’s Pyramid. In this estate Value Homes can give you a complete finished 4 bedroom home with land and pool for $399,800.00.

CairnsLife 14 Magazine

To create the best possible experience for their clients, Value Homes has exceptionally competent Home Design Consultants who work with their clients directly with design and pricing. The process is simplified and enjoyable as Value Homes’ clients and Home Design Consultants work together. Specialising with First Home Owners, Value Homes also caters to second home owners, retirees and have a specialised Investment Division. Each person and family is different, which is why Value Homes has a large range of Standard Designs, and the skills necessary to make changes easily to suit price and lifestyle. This is why they have been able to tailor make over one thousand homes to suit the families in the Cairns region alone. Ralf launched Value Homes twenty-five years ago, and the results are astounding. His local company has helped shaped Cairns as it is today. Value Homes have always given value, they have survived because they gave value at the start, are still providing value now and will always continue to provide the best value they can in the future.

MOWING with bite

A quality job that also gives a real wage and sense of pride to some of Cairns most disadvantaged youth is what Piranha Mowing FNQ is all about. The rapidly successful business, established in May by learning and life skills provider Good Start to Life (GSL), has been perfecting lawns from Gordonvale to Palm Cove, earning plenty of accolades from their many customers. Piranha Mowing FNQ’s former vocational development co-ordinator Trudy Graham says the business developed out of a need to cater for school leavers disadvantaged in an open job market by their learning disability. “We have some residential properties through GSL and the boys were asking if they could come and help our maintenance man to mow the lawns. They took a real liking to doing that and turned out to be quite good so that’s where the idea came from,” she explains. “The feedback from customers has been great. The boys are very particular and make sure the lawns are immaculate. “People have been really impressed.” Every job is performed by a team of three, ensuring a quality but efficient service with minimal disruption for the customer. Confidence, pride in their work and a sense of purpose are just some of the positive benefits gained by the business’s young employees. “The business is a great example we can use when approaching other potential employers of these boys who may not have a good understanding about disabilities,” Trudy says. Now being led by current vocational development coordinator Kylie Ford, Piranha Mowing FNQ is set to grow even further as they continue to build links and exposure within the Cairns community. “When people think mowing, we want them to think Piranha,” she says. “To see the pride these boys have on their faces when they’re out there working is very rewarding. “A lot of people go to work from 9 to 5 because they have to but these boys do it because they’ve got a great sense of passion.” With fixed-pricing and easy-to-book and easy-to-pay facilities, why not give Piranha Mowing FNQ a go for all your lawn needs.

People have been really impressed.

DRIVING

towards the future TEACHING generations of locals how to drive is something of a passion for Howards Professional Driving School. An institution of Cairns, the school has stood the test of time since it first started way back in 1972.

Howards has been an RACQ Approved driving school for decades, completing many tests and checks to maintain this accreditation.

Today, owners Paul and Maria James proudly continue that tradition of giving learner drivers top notch, professional instruction to ensure they are both safe and competent on the road.

Learning to drive is a serious business, and Howards ensures no stone is left unturned in helping their learners to not just pass their driving test but equip them with the skills required to ensure safe and legal practices whilst on the road. No matter your level, ability or age, Howards offer the very best to ensure students gain both confidence and competence on the road.

The couple are long-time residents of both Cairns and Innisfail. Maria has had a long career in customer service and office duties, while Paul has spent 35 years in the broadcasting industry as an announcer, having worked around Australia at a variety of radio stations.

Howards has a variety of clientele, including those who already have a licence and just want to polish their driving skills, older people who have never held a licence before, people with disabilities and new drivers who are getting their licence for the first time.

Both Paul and Maria have continued the “Howdrive tradition with specialist training and customer service. Most of Howards’ driver trainers have been trained in-house by Paul himself and the business boasts a fleet of well-maintained and late model vehicles staffed by well-presented instructors.

It is important to remember that when a learner driver gets their licence, they sign the paperwork and that signature appears on the licence itself. By signing, that driver agrees to abide by all road rules and safe driving habits.

CairnsLife 18 Magazine

Indeed, it’s not just about the mechanics of driving the vehicle. We all need to be aware of our surroundings, the obligations required by us all whilst driving and to be prepared for the unexpected. Recently, Howards has taken over Suncity Driving School and have employed new driver trainers that are proficient in training the “Howards way”. In September 2017, in conjunction with United Kingdom firm Lodgesons and a specially selected local installer, a vehicle has been fitted out with control (brake and throttle) combinations that are operated using one hand, as well as left foot accelerator modifications, among other aids that will assist and enable people with disabilities to get mobile and driving. At Howards and Suncity Driving Schools, we have a team of fully qualified professionals who take pride in their work to solicit the highest outcomes for all students. Both schools are constantly improving as they look to polish their already stellar performance instructing future drivers of Cairns by providing the latest training methods and technology. Every student has different abilities and some may have very little in regard to driving. But each student is a challenge, meaning that whatever level they are at, it is instructor’s goal to teach the best driving methods and improve any abilities they already have to create safe and competent drivers for decades to come.

KEEPING CAIRNS looking sharp

WHEN the professionals of Cairns gear up to go to work each day, there’s a good chance they’ll be wearing something from Totally Workwear. The Scott Street business has been going strong for close to 22 years, having weathered the economic ups and downs of the city thanks to strong relationships, a quality product line and excellent customer service. “There’s not a single year where we haven’t grown,” says Totally Workwear Cairns managing director Chris Kingsbury. “We’ve kept our foot on the peddle post-GFC.” The second longest-running franchise in the Totally Workwear group, the Cairns store was voted store of the year in 2015 at the group’s annual September conference, seeing 20 per cent growth in that year alone. “It was a colossal sense of achievement,” Chris says. “We’re by far the highest performing store in our group and our market acceptance has been very gratifying.” Selling a wide range of workwear, corporate wear and safety gear by brands you know and trust, Chris says the store services an area spanning Cardwell, the Gulf and Cape York with a staff of 23.

“Like everybody in business, we pride ourselves on our service. We do boots to suits,” he says. “Our job is to listen and perform. Everyone who works here is taught in one department and then moved around the business to gain broader knowledge. Adding value to the customer service chain are integrated computer ordering systems, and compliance with internationally recognised ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System and an ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System. “That speaks volumes for our benchmarked standards and we’re rushing forward to embrace the digital age very quickly,” adds Chris. “We’re like a clock with many moving parts. We can get the order into our system very quickly and then place the order.” Maintaining close working relationships with the many local SME businesses in Cairns is important for Chris, who describes Totally Workwear as a “microcosm” of the greater city. “There’s such a variety of businesses and trades we provide for. We may supply the uniform for everybody at your local service station, or equally

the entire business attire for those employed at your law firm,” he says. “Not surprisingly, we also kit out quite a few Fly In Fly Out workers, en route to industry jobs from Mackay to Broome.” Indeed, the secret to Totally Workwear’s success in Cairns has been to totally immerse themselves within the fabric of both the Cairns & FNQ regional communities. The business was one of the first platinum partners involved with the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and support several local sports groups in Cairns, ensuring they are highly visible. Totally Workwear is also a truly family affair, with Chris’s wife June involved in office administration and custom orders while daughter Jenni is office manager and bookkeeper. “We’re very proud of the fact it’s become a family business,” Chris says. “After 22 years in this town, my role as a managing director is to make us well-known and well-received and to drive people towards our business with the expectation of good service. “Totally Workwear is evolving and growing at a very healthy rate. The key to us going forward is to continually selfimprove our processes and the quality of the people who work within the business.”

Where people

COME FIRST From starting in a small, two-person office at a beachside suburb Susan Cooper has risen in the ranks to become one of the most successful real estate agents in the marketplace.

“I enjoy talking to people, listening to them, hearing their stories and, of course, helping them with their property needs. Many of my clients have become friends, which is a bonus.”

She became a principal 20 years ago after joining LJ Hooker Cairns Yorkeys Knob as a salesperson in 1993, and has since become a well-respected high achiever in the industry.

Her clients love her friendly nature, passion to achieve the best results for them and her historical knowledge of properties in the Yorkeys Knob area.

She is a member of the prestigious LJ Hooker Captain’s Club, which is exclusive to the top 15 per cent of salespeople within the LJ Hooker network, and is a Life Member in the Captain’s Club property manager division. The LJ Hooker network has more than 700 franchises and 8000 staff in the Australasia region, making Susan’s accomplishment a momentous feat.

The thing I “ like best about the industry is the people I meet. ”

“I think people appreciate historical information on the properties they’re buying,” she said. “Because I’ve sold properties multiple times over the years, I know the history of many of them and their previous owners.” Susan and her team are highly regarded among their clients for their professionalism, friendly natures and the results they deliver in the local marketplace. They’re genuine, committed individuals who work together as one team to help clients achieve their real estate dreams. They also support many fundraising and charity events such as Festival of the Knob, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Cancer Council and the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, to name a few.

CairnsLife 23 Magazine

Susan has just added Yorkeys Knob Holiday Rentals and Golf and Tour Bookings to her services at LJ Hooker and is presently streamlining new booking systems and upgrading websites with the latest technology to enhance this part of her business. “This will provide more options for our clients, and I’m always up for a challenge,” she said. As Susan celebrates being a principal for 20 years, she would like to thank her clients by taking up to 130 people to the new Smithfield cinemas. Anyone interested is invited to give her a call, but keep in mind it’s first in, best dressed. NIGHT MARKETS Come Alive

FROM home-made gifts to delicious street food and everything in between, the Cairns Night Markets has something for everyone.

“There’s a lot of choice and we’re always working on creating an even more diverse range of products and services.

An institution of Cairns for almost 20 years, the Night Markets are extremely popular with locals and often one of the first stops for tourists visiting the city.

“It’s also good to see things that are handmade by locals on display. That’s what we’re about and I’d love to see more of it.”

Night Markets centre manager Mark Stanley says its long-standing success can put be down to variety, atmosphere and a convenient location in the Cairns CBD. “It’s a very family-friendly place,” he says. “There’s always something different here and a lot of quirky things you can’t get in a department store. “Our location is also important. Everyone knows we’re here in the CBD.” A whopping 2.7 million people visit the Night Markets annually, with clothing, jewellery, indigenous crafts, gadgets, massages, natural healing products and locally made items all available. Mark says a cluster of small street food vendors at the Abbott St entrance has given added value to the Night Markets, complementing its existing food court on the Esplanade side of the centre. A small bar is also in the works, offering even more variety to the Night Markets which consist of more than 70 stalls spread across 131 lots. “I’d also like to see some more “quality” street food vendors. It would add to the multicultural feel of the place,” Mark says.

While certainly a drawcard for tourists during the holiday season, Marks says local customers were equally important to ensuring the Night Markets continued to thrive. “When it’s quiet and there’s less tourists to rely on, you need to rely on the locals to support you,” he says. “We find that if locals have any family or friends in town, they’ll come to the Night Markets and show them around.” With a number developments taking place in the CBD, Marks says the Night Markets is poised for a bright future as it continues to offer the best of Cairns to locals and tourists alike. “I see us maintaining our presence here and it will only get better,” he says. “There’s a lot of development taking place in the CBD with a couple of hotel developments and that’s only going to benefit our retailers at the Night Markets.” The Cairns Night Markets is open from 5pm to 11:30pm every night.

Every Night is “ Markets Night. ”

Keeping a

BALANCED LIFE WHEN it comes to accessing quality, affordable and professional medical services in southern Cairns, look no further than Balance! Edmonton Family Practice. Established in 2011, the practice has been busy catering for a rapidly growing population on the city’s south side. Founder and director Kate Gunn says the integrated primary health care centre offers patients access to a range of medical professionals and services including GPs, nurses, Allied Health, Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology and Rural Medical Imaging. “We offer a very high level of service and people really appreciate the good relationships they have with those health practitioners they see,” she says. “There’s a growing population on the south side of Cairns with not many medical services available there so we’re really excited to fill that need.” Kate is full of praise for her team at the practice, crediting them with making it such a solid success.

BRIGHT FUTURE AFTER more than four decades serving the people of Cairns and surrounding areas, Bruce Mellick isn’t slowing down any time soon. The highly qualified optometrist and founder of Bruce Mellick Optometry has had generations of locals pass through the doors of his practice, always focused on eye health and showcasing the latest in fashion, which is a large reason for families returning to Bruce Mellick Optometry, making their appointments a fun and enjoyable experience. “Most of our patients end up friends,” he says. “For a lot of people coming to me now, I knew their grandparents and seeing them grow up to be adults and fulfilling their life’s ambitions is a joy knowing I helped in some way.” Whether it be glasses, contact lenses, laser surgery or just a check-up, Bruce ensures each patient is properly looked after. “We want them to not only look good but feel good,” he says. “That’s what we’re aiming for.” Employing the latest technology, the practice now offers patients a non-invasive “CAT scan” of their eyes thanks to an Ocular Coherence Tomography instrument.

CairnsLife 27 Magazine

“It allows us to see the layers of the retina better. We pick up conditions like macular degeneration and glaucoma a lot earlier without relying on the patients’ symptoms,” Bruce says. “We can now see the structure and get a better view of the back of the eye. That’s a big game changer.” Employing six staff at his Abbott Street practice, Bruce says he is excited about the future for his business. “The key to the success of the practice is that I’ve got good people around me and it’s fun – not only the professional part but helping our clients choosing a stylish pair of frames which we source ourselves for an individual look,” he says.

SCHOOL FUNDING AND ITS IMPLICATIONS C A I R N S C AT H O L I C E D U C AT I O N

There has been a lot of talk about changes to school funding this year, and what that means for your local school. Despite mass reporting on the 2017 Federal Budget, it seems that there is still much confusion around how schools are funded and how this affects us all the way up here in the Far North.

It is important to note that the governments fund all not-for-profit schools, both government and non-government, to some degree. From here is where it needs some explaining – and this can be done in six simple points. The following notes were prepared in conjunction with the New South Wales Catholic Education Commission but they apply to funding for all Australian schools. 1. The Federal Government sets a base amount of funding per student, plus additional funding for disadvantage. In 2018, the base amount will be $10,953 per primary student and $13,764 per secondary student. The base amount plus loadings for disadvantage make up the Schooling Resource Standard (SRS). 2. State and Federal governments jointly fund 100% of the SRS for government schools. They fund between 20-90% of the SRS for non-government schools, plus 100% of their disadvantage loadings. This is because nongovernment school parents are expected to contribute to the cost of their children’s education according to their capacity. 3. Governments measure the capacity of parents to contribute using ABS household census data and their postcodes. This is used to calculate a socioeconomic status (SES) score for each school from 73 to 140.

CairnsLife 28 Magazine

The higher the score, the more the school’s parents are able to contribute, and the less government funding the school attracts. 4. All schools with an SES score of 93 or lower get 90% of the SRS in government funding. The percentage of government funding falls as the SES score gets higher, until it reaches 125 when the percentage drops to 20%. 5. Government funding is only based on a school’s SES score - not on how much funding the school raises in fees. It is irrelevant for government funding purposes how much funding a school actually raises from its parents in fees. 6. Funding for schools belonging to a system is calculated slightly differently. For Catholic schools, each state or territory’s Catholic Education Commission receives a lump sum based on the average SES of all the schools in their system (called the System Weighted Average). From there, the funding is distributed to each school in the system through their local diocesan Catholic Education Office according to their assessment of local need. Governments allow systems to distribute the funding this way as they recognise that systems have a better understanding of each school’s needs. This methodology will change slightly in 2019, as each school will attract funding to the system based on its individual SES score rather than as a system average.

Catholic Education in Cairns will remain an affordable option for our school families.”

Some commentators have said the Federal Government’s decision to fund 80% of nongovernment schools’ SRS and only 20% for government schools will hurt the latter and benefit the former. This is not the case. The decision formalises a funding approach that was in place under the previous government and will not affect the total funding each school attracts. Government schools receive around 80% of their funding from state governments.

However, Mr Dixon added a note of caution given the changes had not been accompanied by appropriate consultation or clarity in the details.

So what does this all mean? Catholic Education Services Executive Director Bill Dixon said Cairns schools were likely to be much less affected by the funding changes than Catholic schools in southern states.

“We also feel for our Catholic school communities in other states that face enormous challenges brought on by the scope and suddenness of these changes – some families are facing the prospect of unaffordable hikes in tuition fees,” he said.

“This is because most of our schools are in the bottom two quartiles of the SES range, and as a result, could expect increases through the application of needs-based funding,” he said.

“The way this has been managed does not give us cause for comfort and our concern is that we might find ourselves to be negatively impacted by further changes in our circumstances. To that end we are working with our elected representatives to ensure that we return to proper and timely consultative processes,” he said.

“In the Diocese of Cairns, Federal Government funding is projected to increase at reasonable levels each year over the next ten years which should see fee levels at our Catholic schools maintained with potentially only moderate increases in line with CPI during that period,” he said.

“In line with the Church’s social justice values we remain committed to a fair needs-based education funding model.”

one ultimate recording.

Two islands within a hundred miles of each other, so close and at the same time, so far... For more than two years there has been excitement and anticipation building for an inspirational new project named HAVANA MEETS KINGSTON. Australia’s leading reggae and dancehall producer and accomplished pianist, Mista Savona (aka Jake Savona), has gathered some of Cuba and Jamaica’s most influential musicians in the one recording studio to create a world first album. Despite their huge respective global appeal and geographical proximity, there has never been a full-length album that unites the unique sounds of both Jamaican and Cuban music. HAVANA MEETS KINGSTON is a ground-breaking record and project that honours both islands’ incredible musical foundations and legacies while inspiring and creating something entirely new. “When I first travelled to Cuba in 2013, I was surprised to realise that a collaborative musical project between the two islands had never been done before,” Savona said. “There have been various reasons for this including politics, economics, embargoes and civil unrest. But the music of Jamaica and Cuba has had a profound

influence on the rest of the world from the 1960s onwards.” Drawing from the styles the islands are best known for – roots reggae, dub and dancehall on one hand and son, salsa, rumba and Afro-Cuban on the other – HAVANA MEETS KINGSTON sees an incredible team of over 50 international musicians come together to bend and twist genres effortlessly, and the results are exceptional. The first single Carnival featuring British-Jamaican singer Randy Valantine and Cuban singer Solis was released in February 2017 and is making waves across the UK and Europe, as well as keeping its place on the Global Reggae and iTunes (World Music) charts. Beginning with a Kickstarter campaign in 2015, HAVANA MEETS KINGSTON brings together established and emerging Cuban and Jamaican musicians in an album of mostly original songs, as well as covers of classic Cuban material. “The concept for the album is simple – fly some of Jamaica’s legendary and most influential musicians into Havana and put them in the studio with Cuba’s best,” Savona says. The main recording sessions took place over 10 days in June 2015 at the famous Egrem Studio in Havana,

Cuba. Savona personally flew seven Jamaicans into Havana for these sessions, including Sly & Robbie, Boopee and Bongo Herman among other greats. The caliber of artists on this two part album project speaks volumes. “The Cubans told me an angel lives in the studio and that she blesses the music recorded there – I now believe it,” Savona says. Over two years in the making, HAVANA MEETS KINGSTON will be released in two parts - Album #1 on November 3rd 2017 and Album #2 and a feature film documentary following in 2018. In October this year, the Havana Meets Kingston Sound System show featuring Randy Valentine and Solis will hit Australian shores to bring this ultimate fusion to life. Solis will be flying direct from Cuba to join Savona and Valentine on the Tanks Arts Centre stage in Cairns, and it’s the first time key tracks form the forthcoming album will be performed as a live outfit. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime experience when the Havana Meets Kingston Sound System show plays live at Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 21 October, for one night only. BREASTSCREEN CAIRNS SERVICE

C e l e b r a t i n g B r e a s t C a n c e r A w a r e n e s s M o n t h

Have you had your mammogram? A few minutes of your time could save your life.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is a time for everyone in the community to acknowledge the wide reaching impact of breast cancer. Breast cancer is an issue we should all be talking about as it affects our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunties, cousins and daughters and it has a profound impact on our health and quality of life. The statistics are undeniable – breast cancer is prevalent with one in eight Queensland women developing breast cancer at some stage in their life. However breast cancer deaths have fallen by nearly 50 per cent since the introduction of mammography in Australia. BreastScreen has been operating in Cairns for over 25 years. Clinical Director Dr Patricia Dowling said that a breast screen, or screening mammogram, could detect tiny abnormal changes, often before they could be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor; “Early detection can save your life, providing the best chance of effective treatment, increased survival, and improved quality of life”. “At the Cairns Service we screen around 17,000 women for breast cancer each year, however the participation rate of eligible women in Queensland is just 56%. We would love to see this increase as women become more proactive and educated about their health care.” Dr Dowling is incredibly passionate about her role at BreastScreen and proud to say where she works;

CLIENT PROFILE A recent first time screener of BreastScreen is Michelle from Cairns Life Magazine. Michelle came to BreastScreen after a friend made her aware that she is eligible to be screened and at the perfect age to start to take more pro-active steps for the long term for her well-being. After recently turning 46, being a parent to children and always living a lifestyle to stay in optimum health for her family and friends, Michelle realised she was now approaching the age where it is important to establish a base-line for her future Breast Screens. Michelle always thought she was too young to have this done, however after doing some research, she realised it was important to her to establish a history, before the higher risk years approach, so changes can be more easily detected. Michelle states ‘Of course, I was nervous and had heard the negative stories myself about the discomfort of getting screened, but it was more important for my peace of mind knowing that I was taking steps to ensure I can adequately manage all aspects of my health for my family. It was slightly uncomfortable but certainly not painful. The online booking and reporting was easy and the radiographer certainly made it more comfortable. I’m glad I took the step and am happy to share my experience, so more women use this service’

“We are very lucky in Australia to have this free national population-based breast cancer screening service available to all women over the age of 40 years. It is estimated that around 8 deaths from breast cancer will be prevented for every 1000 women who participate in mammographic screening every two years from age 50 to age 74. It saddens me that all eligible women do not participate in this important free health service.” Ms Belinda Lees, Health Promotion Officer at the Cairns Service, said attending a breast screen appointment was half an hour wellspent every two years. “Awareness events like Breast Cancer Awareness Month remind women of the importance of taking care of our health. Regular two-yearly screening at BreastScreen Queensland offers peace of mind, and our dedicated, caring female staff will support you from start to finish and answer any questions you may have,” Ms Lees said Ms Lees encourages all ladies in the community to share their positive experiences of screening and encourage new first time screeners, or ladies who are overdue, to make that initial appointment: “Lots of women fear screening because they have heard negative stories and myths. We encourage women to be well informed about what breast screening actually entails and the importance of breast screening every 2 years.”

ELIGIBILITY: Women aged between 50 and 74 are strongly recommended to have a screening mammogram every two years, as 75% of breast cancer is found in this age group Women in their 40s and women aged over 75 are also eligible for the free service every two years

KEY BREASTSCREEN CAIRNS SERVICE FACTS: BreastScreen offers a FREE specialised service – your doctor cannot offer screening Clients can now make their appointment by either calling 13 20 50 or by booking online at www.breastscreen.com.au Clients have the option of early morning appointments from 7:30am and may be offered same day or next day appointments which take approximately 30 minutes BreastScreen is now located in a temporary location in Cairns North and is set to move to a permanent location in the Cairns CBD early in 2018 If required, wheelchair accessibility and interpreter assistance is also available at all BreastScreen Queensland locations With National Accreditation Standards in place which all services must adhere to, ladies can be assured of a quality service and standards.

“BreastScreen makes a special effort to make new first-time screeners feel at ease and guided through the process in a supportive manner.” Ms Lees says “Screening itself is very quick and is not considered painful by the overwhelmingly large majority of women who screen with BreastScreen Queensland.” BOOK YOUR FREE BREAST SCREEN TODAY

LEXUS OF CAIRNS HIGH TEA

Lexus Of Cairns recently hosted a High Tea as a part of their Encore Privileges program at Palm Cove. The company already host an annual golf day and race day for their encore privileges guests, and were looking to add something a little more suited for the ladies. It seems that this event not only hit the spot with the ladies but a number of men as well. The table was set up on the beach front at Palm Cove. This location was chosen for this event, as so often we take for granted the beautiful location that we live in. To try and keep everything with a local feel, the item gifted to all of those in attendance, was a candle produced

locally with a tropical north scent. The event was a success with all guests in attendance taking a few hours out of their busy schedules to enjoy the stunning weather and location, as well as the company of course. SMALLER LAND, BIGGER HOUSES, SO LET’S GET ‘SMART’ ABOUT BUILDING YOUR NEW HOME!! ROSLYN S MIT H

‘Women i n Bu i l din g ’ Winne r Q M BA 2016

It seems that lately most of the new land that is coming on line is much smaller in size and we are building bigger houses on them. Remember when your first home was 2 bedroom cottage on 700m2 and sometimes even a larger block of land? A smaller block isn’t such a bad scenario as it makes us get smart about the design of the home and a welldesigned home will take advantage of the land’s features.

Awa r d

If you are downsizing it may well be your choice to have smaller land sizes and less maintenance. You don’t really need that large 4 or 5 bedroom home anymore but you do want high quality fittings and fixtures, maybe a much more convenient location and you probably already know by now what you don’t want or need in your new home. If you have a growing family then you may need more yard space for kids to play in. Some options are to look for a block of land opposite the park area and then you can utilise the developer’s subdivision design of parks and open play spaces, or even build a 2 storey home on a small block and then the smaller land footprint of the home

allows you retain more yard space. These days it’s all about being ‘smart’, whether it be in house design or your mobile phone! A smart home design can be based on great ideas including fully functional automated computer systems; practical storage ideas; best use of energy efficiency inclusions; correctly proportioned furniture and fit outs for your rooms; light or dark colours to reflect activities; multipurpose rooms; adjustable lighting for differing moods. Most of these ideas don’t have to cost a great deal because if we are ‘smart’ about our house design and inclusions it means that we are getting the best ‘value for money’. Call me at Affinity Designer Homes and we can discuss how to get ‘smart’ about your new home design or, why not call into the new Value Homes display home at Mt Peter Estate, Edmonton. SHOW ME THE MONEY! … HOW TO ASK FOR THAT PAY RISE EVA GRABNER Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88

“I sucked in a shaky breath, feeling my throat constrict. Panic rose like bile in my body. I suddenly didn’t know how to speak. Or walk. I just stood blankly, staring up at the terror before me. My palms were clammy, and it was all I could do not to knot my fingers together. “Hello.” I managed, the word rolling out of my mouth like tumbleweed. “I, um, wonder if I could have a pay rise?” Are you cringing just reading this? It has got to be one of the most uncomfortable conversations we will ever have in our professional career. Feeling that you deserve a pay rise, thinking about it for days or weeks, running through the conversation with your boss in your head over and over then finally plucking up the courage to walk into their office, only to be hit with the worst case of nerves! We’ve all been there. But how we handle it is different. If you are a hard-working, productive person who consistently achieves targets then you have every right to ask for a pay rise, as long as it’s within reason. Here are a few tips that may help you overcome those nerves and have your boss say ‘yes’. Research The first step is to find out what the standard procedure for salary reviews is at your company with respect to timing and justification. Is it after a full year of employment or at the beginning of the new financial year? What is the state of the market? What data would support your case that your contribution has been significantly above expectations and has, in some ways, improved your company’s financial health . You will also need to know your market value and what comparable roles in your sector are paid. Your recruiter can usually assist you with this. Write it down Be prepared, write down your strengths, your responsibilities and your achievements over the year and, in particular, ways in which you have saved costs, added value and helped to generate additional revenue or provided excellent customer service. Having the facts at your fingertips, rather than trying to recall information off the top of your head, will help you stay calm and matterof-fact. Negotiation Going in to speak with your boss is nerve-racking, but if you are prepared with your case in writing,

then go in knowing your value and what you would consider as acceptable, or not acceptable, as a response. Are you going to start high and work down or do you have a particular amount in mind? Is it all about the money? Perhaps flexibility, working from home, additional vacation time or part-time hours is what you prefer to negotiate? Pay attention to your body language. If you go in guns blazing, your boss may get defensive and you won’t get anywhere but if you go in unprepared and nervous, you may not get anywhere either. Stay relaxed, be confident and avoid repeating yourself too much. Listen carefully to their side and be willing to negotiate and you will be more likely to succeed. Just remember that when it comes to asking for a pay rise, timing is key and you will need to come prepared with a strong, persuasive case to justify the increase. Your desired outcome is not assured, so you need to be prepared for both a positive and a negative response. Have a backup plan ready in case of a ‘no’, perhaps there are other benefits that you could negotiate such as flexible work hours, paid travel and reimbursement for training classes, certifications and other continuing education classes that will benefit both you and the company? But before you leave, be sure you have a clear timeline and agreement on what you would need to demonstrate and achieve by a certain date to secure an increase at your next review. THE POWER OF PR SOCIAL TROLLS BE WARNED

DAN A E J O NE S

Something significant happened recently in the legal world in North Queensland. A precedent was set to pull vindictive social trolls into line through an NQ restaurant owner suing the anonymous troll for defamation. You see this restaurateur was clever and hired a private investigator to reveal the person behind the keyboard that was bringing their business into disrepute. Not only did they identify this person, they took their evidence to a law firm, sued them and won. Now many might think this is the first time this has happened, but it’s not, this is the second legal precedent of its kind to come out of North Queensland. A number of years ago a certain former City Councillor who was inappropriately targeted by a local unpopular blogger sued him for defamation and won, and the blogger was ordered to pay damages to a significant tune. I’ve got to say I am so happy our community is leading the way for true justice in this domain, it makes me proud. I’ve always been an advocate for freedom of speech and freedom to express ones opinion BUT ... I’ve never been a fan of people who viciously and deliberately try and destroy businesses and people’s reputations with malicious intent driven by a personal agenda and irrational emotion. I have personally been targeted by social media trolls and so have many of my colleagues in business, and speaking from experience it’s not a positive time for anyone. The reality is, if you’re successful in business or in public life, then you are a target. I can’t write what I like in the Cairns Life, or broadcast what I like on the local TV or radio station, as there are strict guidelines to prohibit me from doing so and serious legal ramifications should the media outlet allow it to be published if it’s in anyway untruthful or defamatory. So why should social media be any different? Why should someone be able to write complete untruths, harass, abuse, bully and defame individuals and businesses without any consequence?

CairnsLife 67 Magazine

The reality is people are taking their own lives over what people have written about them online. Words can hurt … A LOT. We have seen some very high profile people committing suicide as a result of cyberbullying and social media trolling. This is NOT OKAY! I worry about my children growing up in a society full of cowardly keyboard warriors. There’s enough bullies in the real world let alone having to deal with them online as well. And the sad thing is it doesn’t end when people leave school, or leave work these days, the harassment follows them home and intrudes on their private lives too. It is a conversation we all need to be having. Cyberbullying happens to our children everyday, but it is also happening to our coworkers and business owners. I do see light at the end of the tunnel with the latest legal ruling however. Once we have a few cases like this to refer back to, the legal system can start doing its job. The law in this regard is now finally being tested, by people with the determination and financial backing to do so and I applaud them. The NQ restaurateurs might have been seeking their own kind of justice in recent months, but I hope they realise that they’ve sought justice on behalf of the majority. It’s about time online vilification was brought into line with all other media outlets and overseen by appropriate checks and balances, not to hinder freedom of speech, but to ensure that the speech remains objective and truthful. I think its about time the Commonwealth Government seriously took note. We have the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). When will we see the Government legislate for ACMA to also oversee online conduct? It will save people from their own stupidity in writing complete garbage, and we might just save a few lives in the process.

Last month I asked readers to tell me what annoyed them most about their workplace. I did receive some feedback that people were concerned they might be named and I am very sorry I didn’t make it clear that any comments would be completely anonymous. As it turned out the most interesting response came from out of town, which means that the NOA prize is still available and will be given out via my Facebook page competition. Please enter! So...what annoys you most in the workplace? It really can be behaviour that of itself is not serious, but if not addressed can blow up into a very serious dispute. For example, when a task falls into the “somebody” category. It might be as simple as filling up the photocopier with paper, or making sure there is enough milk. Simple things that are not allocated to any one person in particular, because surely somebody will do it? When nobody does it, and the same person ends up having to do the task,( whatever it may be) feeling that it is not “their job”, people start to feel that others are not pulling their weight and team morale plummets. Once the team fabric starts to unravel, problems arise. I always think of the line from Rudyard Kipling’s poem “the Law of the Jungle” - “For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack”. In other words, it is how well everyone works together that is the strength of the workplace. Workplace mediation can assist to re-build the team. I’m not talking about everyone going off to play laser tag ( although that does sound like fun) but rather everyone having an opportunity to voice their concerns

and grievances in a confidential way, from which constructive solutions are developed. The most interesting example of how something small can become monumental (coming from the top this time) was this scenario. In order to cut expenses, in November, this profitable company issued a directive that it would no longer pay for a Christmas party for its employees. The effect this had on the morale of its staff, who regularly worked through their lunch hours or stayed back late without being paid, was devastating. To them, the company message was that their hard work was not valued. They were not valued as employees. This action without doubt saved the company money, but by the New Year it had lost 3 of its staff and moral was at an all -time low. Fortunately for the company, this came to light through their exit interviews and following mediation the company was able to make amends and keep its existing staff. If you have a problem in the workplace, consider mediation as a means of resolving the dispute before the pack turns on each other! Finally, a thank you to Radio Cairns FM 89.1 who asked me to come and have a chat on air recently about my article “Do it for the Kids” and mediation in general. Rod and Peter made me very welcome. MANAGING CONFLICT FOLLOWING SEPARATION SUZANNE HADLEY

The majority of couples find the most difficult thing to deal with on relationship break down is managing conflict following separation

you think the judge cares who is to blame for the whole sorry mess that seems to be your life following separation, I’m afraid you are wrong. The judge does not care.

It is almost inevitable, even in the most amicable of relationship breakdowns, that the emotionally charged situation can lead to conflict, particularly when children are involved. The conflict levels can skyrocket, having an impact on the family as a whole, not just the separating couple.

Revengeful thinking at a time when you most need to be on top of decision making doesn’t assist. It can also cost you money on unnecessary legal fees; fighting to allocate blame or attempting to gain revenge by being nonnegotiable.

Even in a relationship that has died quietly, there is likely to be conflict of some kind, which, if not managed carefully can escalate into spiteful words and acts, ridiculous statements on social media sites (don’t. Just don’t) and sometimes sadly can descend into acts of domestic violence. The issues that cause conflict following separation are varied. Often the pain and grief at the loss of the relationship can cloud normal thinking, leading parties to say and do things normally outside of their usual behaviour. The pain of separation can turn to the pain of rejection if your ex re-partners with apparently unseemly haste. Unmanaged conflict following separation leads to harmful effects on children observing the conflict and animosity between their parents, both of whom they love dearly. This emotional distress often leads to children feeling they must choose between their parents. There is no blame to be had on relationship breakdown. Your relationship died not because of “the thing” that happened, or “the thing” that your ex did or didn’t do. No Judge will tell your ex they were the bad person causing the whole relationship breakdown. There is no guilty verdict to be had. That is not a judge’s job and if

You are separating not because of “the thing” but because your troubles started a long time beforehand. Relationship breakdown is never one person’s fault. It takes two to make a partnership and if that relationship was not making your heart sing, then you played a part in staying too long in an unworkable unfulfilling situation. Accept ownership of that aspect and you will begin to heal, to stop allocating blame and start working towards the new future that lies ahead. When blame stops you are no longer the victim. You are taking that first step towards building your new future. So how do you manage conflict following separation? The key is good communication. Respectful communication. Always. If this is difficult then seek help. Engage with your GP for a psychologist to help you through. Don’t try to go it alone. There are services available to help manage the grief that follows naturally and when children are involved, how to parent effectively following separation. There are many mediation services to help couples negotiate the separation minefield. How will you know if you have managed that new future and made your way to a happy and fulfilling life? When you can say to your ex, that you wish them the same. That they too have a happy and fulfilling life

NOISE INDUCED HEARING LOSS IS A MAJOR CAUSE OF HEARING LOSS

Hearing loss caused by exposure to excessive levels of noise is one of the leading causes of hearing loss worldwide. It isn’t just caused by exposure to noise in the working environment i.e. industry, mining, farming and construction but increasingly it is due to leisure activities such as listening to loud music, playing in a band, using iPods or shooting as a hobby.

JOA N N A MAG E E

Women now suffer just as much as men as they often have the same lifestyle. Many older people suffer the effects of exposure to noise in the workplace even though this exposure was over 30 or 40 years ago. Hearing protection has only been used and enforced in the last decade. “It was very common for me to see client’s with very diminished hearing caused by industry noise, explains Joanna. We had names such as Boiler Maker’s Ear so prevalent was the condition and there was little that could be done to help with the old technology. Now that has all changed with the advent of digital hearing aids which can really improve the ability to of those impacted with this hearing loss to hear speech clearly again.”

This type of hearing loss damages the hair cells in the inner ear and is a permanent loss of hearing which is often accompanied by a ringing in the ears called tinnitus. In fact, a ringing or buzzing in the ears after exposure to noise is a symptom of damage to the hearing system. Initially this may be a temporary shift in threshold but it can become permanent so it needs to be taken seriously. Just ask Kamahl who suffers from noise induced hearing loss from his many years performing music. Like many people he never gave a thought in his early years to using hearing protection and his hearing loss crept up on him, slowly and insidiously.

“Having enjoyed lunch several times with him in a very noisy restaurant I found it was myself with normal hearing that was straining to hear what he was saying whereas he was relaxed, sitting back and able to hear me quite clearly. This is thanks to the new technology in his hearing devices which processes speech clearly and reduces the background noise.” If you think you may have a hearing loss caused by noise book in with us at AUDiOHEALTH for a hearing assessment. We are able to provide advice on ear protection, offer solutions to overcome the challenges of not hearing well and can give you advice on claiming compensation. The most important message though is that hearing is precious and fragile and to protect it. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) affects the high frequencies more than the lower frequencies consequently it is difficult to understand speech clearly. Background noise remains unaffected so this then masks out the speech making it very difficult to hear conversation in restaurants and groups of people. Kamahl has taken action and comments that he wishes he had done so sooner as the beautiful sounds of music are now much richer and fuller again to him and full of meaning and pleasure. He is no longer straining to hear conversation and can relax.

DOC: “I’VE GOT NO FLOW, PAST THE SHOES, IT WON’T GO!” When a man has this complaint, it is likely that he has enlargement of the prostate called B.P.H. This stands for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. It is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate which occurs in most men as they get older. Not all have symptoms. The prostate is a gland that surrounds the opening of the bladder like a donut. It provides fluid which comes out at the time of ejaculation. It is usually about the size of a small walnut at the age of 20-30. As men age, it can enlarge outwards or inwards or both. As it enlarges inwards “the hole of the donut” can become smaller leading to a man having problems with urination. He may find that he has to hurry to get to the toilet on time. When he gets there he may have to stand and wait for the stream to start. He might have a slow flow, not empty completely and have delayed finishing with dribbling. Sometimes there is a small amount of leakage when he leaves the toilet and walks away. As well as that he might have to go more often because of the incomplete emptying and also get up several times at night. Occasionally, the man may stop passing urine completely. This is called retention of urine and will need to be relieved by passage of a tube through the penis and in to the bladder. This is called a catheter. Men who have these symptoms do not usually have prostate cancer but delay treatment because they are frightened they might. A simple blood test called PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) may help identify men who may have prostate cancer. Although the test is not specific for cancer, it is raised in many cases of cancer. If the test is raised then a repeat test is usually done a short time later as many other factors can cause its elevation. If there is a suspicion of prostate cancer then a multiparametric MRI can assist in assessing the need for a biopsy.

What about B.P.H.? There are various general measures which can help control symptoms. These include reducing the intake of caffeine containing drinks such as tea, coffee, cola and “energy” drinks. The caffeine causes the kidneys to make more urine more quickly and can also irritate the bladder so it is not able to hold enough. Alcohol has a similar effect. Some medications can enable the opening of the bladder to relax to increase the flow and improve emptying. There are also medications which can “shrink” the prostate but by themselves are unlikely to be helpful. Some have side effects which can reduce a man’s ability to get an erection. Interestingly, some of the medications which are used to improve erections can also improve bladder emptying. Often it will be necessary for a man to have an operation. This is an operation which removes the blockage of the central part of the prostate like taking out an apple core. It is often referred to as a “re-bore”. Its technical name is a Trans-Urethral Resection of Prostate (TURP). It is done with a telescope passed through the opening of the penis and the pieces removed are then sent to pathology to be examined. At Cairns Urology we have been doing this operation as day surgery since 1997. This reduces the likelihood of hospital acquired infection, significantly reduces costs and frees up hospital beds for those patients who need them. There are other surgical procedures designed to achieve the same result but they have not been proved to be better, particularly over the long term. PILATES FOR ATHLETES JA N I N E NO O P E TC H

Do you want to improve your game of Golf ? Your finishing time for your marathon? Your form and technique for your Gym & Cross-fit classes? Do you need a secret weapon for your performance, or get the edge over your competitors? Then Pilates is the answer for you. Pilates is not just for women, Joseph Pilates actually created Pilates for Men in 1912 during the world War 1 when he was working in England with injured soldiers. Did you know that most Olympic level, National Sports teams and High Profile Sportsmen and woman all take pilates classes as part of their cross-training. This includes Footy Players, Golfers, Tennis Players, Dancers and more. Pilates for Athletes can help rehabilitate injuries, create more balance in the body as with most sports - over use of some muscles and under use of others occurs. Take Tennis for example. The arm used for the swing of the racket is drastically overused - with little to no use from the other arm during a game ad overtime, this causes injuries and shoulder surgery is a very common next step. Also just working on the Gait Cycle with the footwork on the Reformer, Tower and Wunda Chair helps with your alignment from the feet up. Just this alone will make a huge difference particularly from anyone participating in running in their sport. There will be less ankle, hip and knee pain. Pilates focuses not just on the major muscle groups but all the smaller accessory muscles also. A lot of athletes have very tight hamstrings as there is a lot of work done building bigger quads and hamstrings and not a lot of flexibility practised. Have you ever seen the footy players warming up? They are not too flexible! Pilates Equipment uses springs

COLON MASSAGE AND BODY WRAP ARE GREAT FORGOTTEN THERAPIES OF THE PAST C H RI ST IANE WAGNE R

By foc u si n g o n t h e wh o le in d iv id u a l, Christ i an e i s ab l e to ta ilo r tr e a tm e n ts to ad d ress d i ver s e p r o b le m s a n d emotion s an d su p po r t c lie n ts to fin d a balan ced , h eal t hy life s ty le .

How did I come to create a colon massage with wrap? In Germany, I treated people in a disabled-care house. They had to take a lot of drugs, which suppressed the colon. I started to apply colon massage to these patients because the drugs ceased to work anymore and the clients began to suffer from bad constipation. I figured out that it was possible to improve colon movement to release the stool and that the colon can go back to functioning optimally without drugs when people received frequent colon massages. Some clients’ colons improved so much that they no longer needed either drugs or colon massage anymore. That’s how I created this special treatment. What happens if toxins are not eliminated from the colon on a regular basis? As mentioned a healthy colon is essential for your overall well-being. If your digestive system is unable to eliminate all of the faecal matter in your colon, over time, toxins may start leaking into the bloodstream, a process known as “leaky gut syndrome.” This may contribute to various degenerative diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and chronic constipation. Other symptoms of toxins in the bowel may include bowel obstruction, inflammation, back pain, bloating, skin problems, fatigue, moodiness, depression and excess intestinal gas – and that’s just to name a few. Research shows that constipation and other digestive disorders afflict a lot of people. The average person carries approximately 10–15 lbs of impacted waste in their colon. It is estimated that people suffer symptoms of chronic constipation frequently, which leads to visits to the doctor. Body wrap The warm waist-wrap is a forgotten health treatment from the very past. Applied warm, it increases blood circulation and works as an antispasmodic. It is applied in the region of the abdomen and extends from the ribs to the hips. Adding special oils or liquids directly on to the skin for

different purposes are also possible. The most important areas of application of this warm wrap are colic and convulsions, bloating, constipation, kidney, bladder diseases and menstrual period pain. A wrap is merely one or more wipes arranged circularly around the body (whole body wrap) or a body part (partial wrap) moistened with a tempered liquid or coated with a substance. As a rule, wraps, compresses or envelopes are also counted from the wipes, which are applied to the skin. In the area of professional nursing care, wraps and restorations are part of the alternative nursing methods, and further training as a specialist for wrapping applications is possible in Germany and Switzerland. However, wraps are also used as household products in non-occupational care. A well-known example of this is the calf coil. In contrast to associations and healing plasters, wraps are applied only briefly and are used above all for the application of active ingredients or for achieving physical effects. Purpose and fields of application Wraps and pads can be used for various reasons. Warm and cold wraps are used, for example, in physical therapy to stimulate the circulation of the skin and thereby influence the metabolic process at the affected site. Some wraps are used to dissipate stresses at a different location over a peripheral stimulus, for example foot pads are used for headaches. Depending on the specific effect of the substance, coats and coatings coated with substances such as clay, medicinal herbs or oils are intended to introduce corresponding active substances into the body via the skin. engineering is to the Germans...

La Beaute Naturale is all about using what mother nature has already intended for us and therefore stocks renowned organic beauty French brand, Phyt. “Organic skin care is not only about beauty. Being a nature lover, it was only natural for Touriya to fall in love with Cairns and the great Far North, as although our monuments are not quite as grand as the Eiffel Tower, it is however as GREAT as the Great Barrier Reef - a natural phenomenon that can be seen from the moon! - and even Touriya agrees, you certainly can’t beat that! Touriya herself is now on a great mission of her own across Cairns to encourage everyone to STOP and take time out for themselves, especially the busy mums out there, whom are are always looking after everyone else and leaving themselves last. So with La Beaute Naturale opening up within Sports World Fitness Centre - there’s no more excuses, as they provide child care for only $4 an hour (Definitely worth your sanity, Mums!).
