Tastes of the Tablelands is arguably the most significant foodie festival in the region. It showcases local producers, innovators, youth and culture. Started in 2008 Tastes of the Tablelands festival is all about fresh flavours and what’s hot in the region. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Hou Wang Chinese Temple gounds in Atherton this festival showcases the producers and innovators of the region. Food, Entertainment, Local Crafts and Cultural Diversity all headline in this festival to create a celebration of the Atherton Tablelands. The setting of the National Trust grounds of the historic Chinese Huo Wang Temple creates a signature experience. The festival revolves around a stage of talented local entertainment and is reminiscent of an old-fashioned picnic day. Also mixes that ‘under the tree’ experience with the latest in food experiences. It is possible to taste and buy a huge variety of produce, much of it unique to this region.
Visitors are encouraged to plan on spending the day at the Festival as there will be lots to do including non-stop entertainment and cooking demonstrations by local chefs and producers. Classic cars, children’s activities and working artists will also be featured on the day. And of course the highlight of the day is plenty of gourmet food and cool drinks to enjoy throughout the day. Its not all about the Festival it’s also about promoting the Far North and the Tablelands. By making the Festival a destination event it encourages tourism which in turn stimulates the local economy. The social benefits are pride instilled in the area. Visitors create a flow on effect through Social media and word of mouth that encompasses the whole area.
Farmers from across the region will be selling their produce on the day allowing visitors to see fresh produce at its best. Visitors can wander through the many stalls that sell or display the products from our Tableland and Far North area. This festival shows how diverse the Tableland region is and what wonderful products can come from one region.
For the Festival to run to its potential, Sponsorship is at the core. Business needs to get behind the event so it can be showcased successfully. The social benefit of festival sponsorship and membership is stronger relationships within a community. Most of the relationship-building occurs in the festival planning phase. This is where the bonds among public and private organizations, government, and neighborhood groups are forged and where connections among elected officials, staff, volunteers and interested residents are made.
The wonderful entertainment makes this a standout festival as well, with headliners Legends of Perhaps, who will also be performing at the Tablelands Music Festival. Favourites The Billy Turner Trio, The Hot Shots, Nozzmosis and the Uptown Music Students’ Band, amongst the line up on the day.
Tastes of the Tablelands is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Atherton and is run to support the local community. For further information please contact Kirsty Densmore Festival Manager on 0413 010 625 or check out the website: www. tastesofthetablelands.com.au.

Enthusiasm and passion drive success
By employing the best people, I just want to make sure that the buyers and sellers of Cairns get the absolute best knowledge, integrity and service that they can get.”
While award-winning agents and dedicated staff have helped RE/MAX become one of the largest and most successful real estate agencies in the city, it’s principal Tony Williamson who is the driving force behind the success. After starting the business in 2010 by himself, Tony now has a team of 25 and is one of country’s rare principals who own his own real estate premises. “I have a fantastic and hard-working team,” said Tony, a third-generation local. “Our secret is our ability to adapt to market conditions, adapt to legislative changes and to adapt quickly. “And we have fun. People want to deal with someone who has a bit of fun and enthusiasm in them. If you’re not fun to deal with, people won’t deal with you.” Tony started in the real estate industry in his early 20s and soon became a top agent in his office before pursuing accounting and marketing degrees at James Cook University. He returned to the industry in 1999 and opened his own office, which he sold in 2006. He continued working in the industry as a trainer, consultant and motivational speaker until he re-entered the market in 2010 and opened RE/MAX, which has been expanding, winning awards and producing millions of dollars in sales since. He says his interest in real estate actually started when he was a young boy in school.

“Every year my parents would buy a different house, renovate it and then sell it,” he said. “I lived in 12-15 different houses during my school years, which is probably where my desire to become a real estate agent started.” Tony’s insight into the market and ability to identify new markets as well as best practices and customer service has played a significant role in putting Cairns on the global property market. He is recognised nationally and internationally as a market expert and is a sought-after speaker at Australian and overseasevents, including RE/MAX conventions in Rome, Vienna, Thailand, Las Vegas and Korea. He is also RE/MAX’s Asian Ambassador and an unofficial Ambassador of Cairns and is passionate about promoting the city wherever he goes. “I just love Cairns,” said Tony, who is also chairman of the Northern Pride Rugby League Team and a board member of the Queensland Country Credit Union. “I was born here, both my parents were born here, and I went to school at Cairns North State School and Cairns State High School. “Wherever I go, I do everything I can to get Cairns on the radar. Through my work I get the chance to speak around Australia and the world, and I always sell the virtues, benefits and features of living in this glorious place.
When the economy is better, development happens and when there’s development, the positive effects flow on throughout the whole city.” His drive to turn clients’ dreams into reality makes him one of the best in the industry. One of his personal dreams was to own his own real estate building, which he accomplished last year when he bought a former wedding chapel in Whitfield and moved his business there. “It’s rare for real estate owners in Australia to own their own premises,” he said. “While it’s not your traditional mainstream high-profile real estate office, it ticked all the boxes. I wanted a venue where we could do sales, rentals, auctions, training and any real estate transactions from the one venue. “Our sales have increased since moving here, and we’re leading the way in auctions.” Tony’s passion for everything real estate is shared amongst his staff, who have training every morning to make sure they’re across all trends while also learning from some of the best experts in their field. “I love my job,” said Tony.“I just want to make sure that the buyers and sellers of Cairns get the absolute best knowledge, integrity and service that they can get.”
“I’m looking for people to come to Cairns because if we get more people coming to Cairns it’s better for the economy.

Jenkins Rubber Shop is proud to celebrate its 70th anniversary this year. Jenkins has only had three owner partnerships during this time, and has a proud tradition of long-serving employees. This continuity of long-term ownership and long-serving staff ensures customers deal with experienced service personnel with a history in the trade supplies of rubber and foam. Knowledge and experience is readily available, together with good oldfashioned friendly service. Jenkins Rubber is now owned by Tracey and Andrew Barnes, with the store’s second owner Judy Nickles still working at the shop after 35 years. Judy loves the family atmosphere at Jenkins, as well as assisting customers with her wealth of knowledge. “We’ve been here 70 years, so that shows we respond to the community’s needs and we’re well respected,” she said. Bill and Kim Jenkins started out the business as a shoe repair company, and expanded into selling rubber and foam, which soon became the core activity. This company is now called Environmental Engineering Sales Australia. “We are now a major supplier of environmental and civil engineering products in Cairns,” said owner Mike Richardson, who has a Bachelor of Land Management Degree from The University of Sydney. Upon its move in 1986 to Sheridan Street, its focus shifted to trade and industry. Demand prompted by the growth in marine and engineering industries led to further expansion, and the business moved to its current premises in 1995. The team now supplies an extensive range of rubber and foam products for a variety of industries, including tourism and hospitality, automotive, marine, agricultural and pastoral, as well as hospitals, emergency services and schools. “Our team are friendly, helpful and have excellent product knowledge,” Andrew said. “We are here to help you find the right product to meet your needs. “We are constantly evolving and responding to market needs. In 2010, The Groundwork Group acquired Cairns Tactiles, a recognised provider of tactile ground surface indicators and associated accessories to aid visually impaired people in the Far North Queensland region. Together, the group of companies’ mission is to cater for the demand of specialist installations and supply of various environmental engineering products. “The business has grown because we’ve listened to people’s needs and filled those needs,” Mike said. “We also have long-term relationships with world-class manufacturers and provide services to a diverse range of customers such as government agencies, local authorities, Main Roads, the mining industry, contractors and residential clients, for which we are extremely grateful. “We’ve also developed a strong relationship and network of suppliers in order to achieve the best results for our clients.”

BARRIER REEF MEDICAL CENTRE

Having a trusted relationship with your doctor is one of the best ways to maintain or improve your health, which is why the general practitioners at Barrier Reef Medical Centre focus on individualised care for each of their patients. “We believe it’s important people should have a good relationship with their doctor,” said Dr Ian Bennett, co-owner of the practice. “The basis on which we practice is ensuring each patient receives adequate consultation, time individual attention.” Started in 1978 by Dr Michael McAuliffe (who left BRMC in 2008 but only retired earlier this year), the seven doctors at the practice are long-term Cairns’ residents who also have established relationships with both the private and public hospitals. They also have long-term relationships with specialists, allied health workers and natural health practitioners, enabling them to offer patients referrals to the top experts in their respective fields. Dr Bennett is the longest-serving doctor at the practice, having started in 1984. “It has been an honour to have cared for so many people and families, sometimes up to five generations in one family in my own community,” he said. “It is wonderful to see second and third generation of patients at the practice. “We believe strongly in having close relationships with our patients and their families to guide them to good health and best management for long-term illness.” Dr Bennett’s special interests are in musculoskeletal and injury management, chronic disease, aged and palliative care. Dr Bennet co-owns the state-of-the-art practice with Drs Andy Morice, Katrina Marshall and Carl Vogler.
Dr Delaney’s areas of interest are women’s health, antenatal care and travel medicine.
Dr Morice, who has been living in Cairns since 2008, graduated with his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1993 from the University of Arizona and following this obtained his specialist in family medicine qualification through the American Board of Family Medicine in 1996.
Dr Harrison, a born-and-bred local, graduated from James Cook University in 2011 and spent the next five years working in various roles in the hospital system before moving into GP training in 2016.
He has also obtained qualification as a HIV medicine specialist from the American Academy of HIV Medicine and practiced in the field 12 years before moving to Australia. He also enjoys his work in adult medicine and palliative care. Again, it is essential to manage ongoing changes in immigration matters. “Immigration laws and policies change frequently, almost on a weekby-week basis,” Carol said. “The only way to keep on that is to review regulations and policies on pretty much a daily basis, which our team does.” Carol and her team prepare all relevant documentation and liaise with the Department of Home Affairs on their client’s behalf until the application is finalised. They also provide advice and referrals to service providers to help their clients settle into the Australian lifestyle. “We love working with people to help them create a better life and a bright future in Australia,” Carol said. “It’s very rewarding helping clients achieve their immigration dreams.”

Since starting as a one-man operation in 1974, NQPS Security has grown into one of the biggest security companies in the region. While it has undergone a few name changes since Jim Gilbert started as Cairns Night Watch Security as a sole trader, NQPS Security has also become one of the city’s largest employers throughout its North Queensland centres. “We’ve grown exponentially since 1974 and now employ 70 plus staff and cover outlining areas as well, such as the Tablelands, Innisfail and Port Douglas,” said co-owner and managing director Barry Park. “While Jim is now retired, we still utilise his services. He’s was a pioneer in the industry and is still very knowledgeable.” The highly respected company’s list of security services is huge and includes static guard services with qualified armed or unarmed security officers who protect property, people, events and businesses. It also offers security patrols, cash transport/banking services, home and resort security and alarm services including installation, monitoring and alarm response. As the crime rate in the region has increased, so has the need for tighter security. While the business has hundreds of local clients, it also subcontracts for 23 national security companies including some of the country’s leading security firms such as MSS Security, Sydney Night Patrol, SecureCorp and Wilson Security.

“All security services that we provide are supervised by senior staff with long-standing field experience who have served North Queensland since 1974,” Barry said. “We have hundreds of years of experience with the staff who work for us.” Because the security industry is always evolving and new legislations are frequently introduced, NQPS Security staff, who are all licensed professionals in accordance with state legislative requirements, are constantly undergoing training. “We keep up to date through Specialised Career Solutions to ensure staff remain highly skilled and receive ongoing training in the latest technological security services,” Barry said. “We make sure our team is up to date with the latest technology and skills required.” Barry believes there are two other important elements to the company’s success – client relationships and staff. “We keep in regular touch with our clients,” he said. “We don’t see many of our clients because we work nights and they work days, but we touch base with them as often as we can to make sure they’re happy with our service. “We also wouldn’t be successful without our dedicated staff. We have a great bunch of local people who have formed a great company with us.”

Making a Splash Paying particular attention to detail and being handson is the key.”
Words by Stacey Carrick Photos by Catherine Coombs
Dean Thomas is passionate about pools, high quality workmanship and attention to detail. He and his award-winning team specialise in middle-upper residential pools and commercial pools, both new and renovations. His team is multi-skilled and Dean has taught them everything he knows about the pool industry. The majority of work is completed by Dean and his team, with very few sub-contracting services being utilised. Dean likes to be hands-on where he can keep an eye on the construction and finishing of each pool. “I’m very particular, so if I’m happy, the client will be happy,” he said. “I want the job done right, I want it to last. I recommend people have a look at us if they would like a pool built, because we’re all about quality.” Dean has lived in Cairns for the past 36 years after growing up on the Gold Coast and starting his career in Melbourne. After a few years of pool building and pool finishing contract work in Cairns, he opened Dean Thomas Pools in 1986.
Dean Thomas Pools rebuilt the pool on the rooftop of the Reef Hotel Casino as well as the water feature outside the casino entrance. Dean also installed the concrete structure and pebbled the interior of the massive pool at Sea Temple Resort & Spa in Port Douglas and completed the concrete structure of the Mackay Bluewater Lagoon. He loves personalising pools to meet his customers’ specific requirements, as well as ensuring the aesthetics and technical components are the most efficient possible. “By choosing us, you’re choosing an award-winning pool builder with more than 40 years’ experience, working with you in creating the defining touch to your own paradise,” he said. “Coming from a strong construction background, I have built hundreds of pools within the Cairns region and surrounding districts, with each pool reflecting a unique style, quality of workmanship, service and the utmost attention to detail. “Our team consists of dedicated trades people who work tirelessly in all aspects of the design, construction and finishing of high quality reinforced concrete pools.
“I love the physical construction side of the work. It is very rewarding when you see the final product and a happy client.
“Each design will reflect an individuality in free-form or formal shape and design. When completed, your pool will truly enhance your lifestyle and add value to your property. “When we construct a pool, the design will reflect the individual needs of each family and will be expertly constructed within the budget specified and will definitely improve the family’s lifestyle aspects.
“Word of mouth is the best thing. We began in the ‘80s and we’re still going strong more than 30 years later.”
“Our professional team can build from your plans, or design your project to your individual requirements.
Dean Thomas Pools is a member of the Swimming Pool And Spa Association and also Master Builders, which guarantees the quality of his workmanship.
“A pool built by Dean Thomas Pools will exceed all your expectations, present well and remain financially viable.”
“Paying particular attention to detail, and being hands-on is the key”, Dean said.
Dean loves the challenge of building pools of various shapes and sizes, and even on challenging terrain. He and his team have won a number of awards for his pools through SPASA and Master Builders, with many of the awards won due to the technical engineering aspects and the difficult terrain, most notably in City View and on Magnetic Island. Legacy lives on We live in paradise here in Cairns with the reef and the rainforest, so we are actively reducing our impact on the environment.” Starting in modest surroundings in 1977, Allan Willmot put his heart and soul into his smash repair business, which has since become one of the city’s leading professional auto body repair shops. He started as a sole operator working out of a one-shed building, specialising in repairing damaged vehicles of a few different makes and models. Today, Willmot Smash Repairs employs 26 people, services all makes and models of vehicles and has recently expanded into larger custom-built premises. “We built the new facility last year, just four doors down from our old premises on Newell St where we were spread inefficiently over three sheds,” said Helena Willmot, Allan’s daughter who is comanaging director with Wes Jenkins. “We wanted to take the business to the next level in smash repairs to improve flow of production, and it works seamlessly.” In 2011 the business was the first of its kind in Queensland to achieve Green Stamp

Accreditation, rewarded to workshops that display environmental sustainability procedures and initiatives within their operations. “We live in paradise here in Cairns with the reef and the rainforest, so we are actively reducing our impact on the environment as our industry can be quite damaging,” Helena said. “It is all for the betterment of our region.” The business is proud to have won a number of highly acclaimed awards including winning the 2018 Paint and Panel Bodyshop Awards for Best New Shop QLD at the 2107 BEX Technology Excellence Award, the 2014 TNQ Employee Engagement Award and the 2011 Dupont National Sustainability Award. Helena said they are also proud to have a high level of staff retention, including Allan’s first panel beater apprentice from 1983 who is still there, and a dedicated team that always includes apprentices.

While Allan no longer works at the business and is enjoying retirement, his legacy of providing excellent customer service, maintaining quality repairs and reinvesting in the business lives on. “So also has his passion to provide a great environment and culture for staff,” Helena added.

TROY CUMMINGS

With the number of home break-ins and thefts in the region, it’s no surprise that more and more people are turning to Troy Cummings Locksmiths to safeguard their homes against thieves. “It’s traumatic for people when their homes have been broken into,” Troy said. “While the theft is upsetting enough, the whole idea of their home being invaded is also very difficult for them.” Troy, who is a born-and-bred Cairns’ local, has been in the industry for 16 years and his business is well known for providing top-of-the-line security and locksmith services. “It’s sad to say, but it’s almost inevitable these days that you or someone close to you will have their home broken into,” he said. “We believe the secret is in prevention.” Troy and his team are experts in the latest state-ofthe-art security systems, including electronic security, alarms, CCTV cameras as well as the range of industry-grade locks and door hardware not often found in commercial hardware stores such as padlocks, electronic locks, door closers, gate locks and latches. Troy said more and more people today are opting for modern security systems such as alarms, CCTV surveillance cameras and electronic security access (ETA), which he is a huge fan of.
Words by Janie Barton Photo by Catherine Coombs
“The beautiful thing about electronic security is that people can have their locking devices available online, which means they can control their alarm systems when they’re away,” he said. “And because it’s an app world now, businesses can monitor several businesses all on the same app.” Troy said the ETA alarm systems are also ideal to prevent people breaking into your home when you’re actually there as you can alarm rooms that you’re not in. He is also a huge fan of stand-alone digital door locks that allow people to keep their doors locked at all times including when they’re inside or outside in the yard. “We hear a lot of cases where people are at home or working in the garden and thieves come in and start grabbing stuff,” he said. People’s security is vitally important to Troy and his team, who travel throughout the region to help people improve their home, car and business safety 24 hours a day and who constantly undergo training. “I can’t praise my team enough,” he said. “They have a genuine caring nature and will go above and beyond to make sure our customers feel safe and secure.”

Decades of dedication Unless there is doctoring or nursing which has to be done in hospital, patients get better faster when they’re at home.”
For over 21 years Dr Neil Gordon at Cairns Urology has provided urological care to the people of Far North Queensland. Contrary to some rumours, he is not retiring yet. During that time there have been many significant changes, complementing his view that investigations, medications and operations should be carried out to enable patients to live for a long time and a good time. This is something he emphasises when he teaches urology to medical students at James Cook University. He has pioneered the management of urological care in regional Australia with his purchase of an Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripter, which breaks up kidney stones with sound waves. In addition, he purchased a flexible ureteroscope and laser for stone removal, a flexible cystoscope for bladder examination, an ultrasound for prostate biopsy and monitoring surgery in cryotherapy. This is a freezing treatment for prostate cancer. “Cryotherapy treats localised prostate cancer, and it’s about an hour and a half day surgery,” Dr Gordon said. He introduced cryotherapy when patients had to travel and stay in Townsville or Brisbane for radiotherapy for eight weeks. It is still part of the armamentarium for prostate cancer treatment.
Routine Transurethral Resection of Prostate is carried out in day surgery as well as other procedures such as vasectomy and vasectomy reversal. “It is always a great thrill to be sent a picture of a baby after that is successful,” he remarked. He also provides comprehensive treatment for disorders in women such as recurrent infections and incontinence. Dr Gordon also holds a certificate in MRI prostate detection and biopsy from Radboud University Medical Center at Nijmegen, Netherlands. This was a world first for a urologist! When patients attend Cairns Urology, they will see a specialist right away and know that the same specialist will be the one who treats them without having to go through a long waiting period. “Nearly everything I do is done in day surgery and with a nursing team have developed better post-operative care, reducing lengths of stay so patients can go home sooner,” he said. “Unless there is doctoring or nursing which has to be done in hospital, patients get better faster when they’re at home.”

FULL STEM AHEAD FOR
CQUNI CAIRNS
CQUniversity Australia is getting ready to boost opportunities for STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) study in the region thanks to several new projects to support course delivery. The new projects include an aviation training facility that will be based at the existing Tom MacDonald building at Cairns Airport, a sports science education and research precinct based at Cairns Basketball Stadium and a heavy equipment engineering lab located on Buchan Street. CQUniversity Cairns Associate Vice-Chancellor Jodie Duignan George explained that the infrastructure projects would see the University grow its city footprint and facilitate better direct engagement with industry. “As Australia’s most engaged university it ultimately makes sense to co-locate with industry and ensure that our focus reflects the future needs of the region”, Ms Duignan-George said. “When completed, the aviation hub and the sports science centre will be the only facilities of their kind and will allow the University to deliver education, training and research that is completely embedded in industry.” Ms Duignan-George explained that student demand for STEM courses was also driving the University’s investment in new facilities. “Demand for STEM-related courses is growing across the board and CQUniversity is responding to this demand and the needs of our communities and industry. “A good example is that CQUniversity has offered a full engineering course since the Cairns Square campus opened

and students can choose to specialise in civil, mechanical or electrical engineering. “Prior to us offering this course in Cairns, students would need to relocate south to complete an engineering degree, so it has proved to be a very popular course. “Due to this demand we have recently established a heavy equipment lab worth more than half a million dollars on Buchan Street, Portsmith. “This new lab provides students with access to classroom and breakout spaces plus equipment such as a Universal Testing Machine, concrete compression machines, and thermodynamic and soil testing equipment,” said Ms Duignan-George. “We are finding that engineering continues to be a very popular course offering across the University, thanks in part to the fact that CQUniversity’s engineering school is ranked amongst the top 300 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Subject Rankings.
CQUniversity Cairns engineering graduate Matthew White enjoyed the hands on experience.
“On top of this, our engineering graduates are in high demand with CQUniversity graduates enjoying some of the best employment outcomes in Australia. “National Quality Indicators in Learning and Teaching (QILT) data shows that 83% of CQUni engineering graduates find full-time employment within three months of graduation and that their average starting salary is $75,000 (a figure that is well ahead of the national average of $63,000).” “I think our graduates are in such high demand because CQUniversity places such a strong emphasis on work integrated learning and industry collaboration, not just in engineering but across all of our learning disciplines,” said Ms George.
CQUniversity exercise and sports sciences students test the state-of-the-art equipment.

The IB Diploma gives students a broad depth and breadth of knowledge, with a focus on critical thinking and 21st century skills.
The IB is rigorous, dynamic and develops a holistic student. My advice: use your time wisely, read ahead and seek assistance when in doubt.
Our students look back and are very proud of what they have achieved. IB opens the door to a greater range of opportunities locally and internationally. Students need to be motivated, determined and manage their time. Families need to be very supportive and celebrate their successes.

Paving the Way TWO LOCAL SCHOOLS ARE LEADING THE WAY WITH THEIR CUTTING-EDGE APPROACH TO EARLY YEARS EDUCATION
With research to suggest schools can have a greater influence on children’s behaviour and academic achievements than families, the early years are now more crucial than ever for setting little ones up for a life of learning. But not all schools are the same. On the forefront are local schools St Therese’s in southern Cairns and Holy Cross to the north, which have adopted two unique, holistic approaches to early education to give their students the best start to modern life. “We are leading the way with Early Years Education: Walker Learning – a play-based approach where children ‘learn by doing’, driven by their own interests and passions,” explains Holy Cross Principal, Sarah Hamilton. “Although unique, this teaching and learning style shares features of both the Montessori and Steiner approaches.” The Trinity Park-based school is the only school north of Townsville which has adopted this approach, delivering an interesting and engaging curriculum that allows students to develop skills for the 21st century, while also nurturing wellbeing, values, social justice, Christian values and inclusivity. According to Kathy Walker, founder of Walker Learning, regardless of the age and stage of development, children learn most effectively when there is hands-on, real-life exposure to learning opportunities that relate to their interests. “There is technology galore in our eHub, with one-toone iPads, robotics, coding and assistive technology accessed across all areas of school life: embedded in day-to-day teaching in classrooms, special projects in the eHub and extra-curricular clubs. We offer spacious grounds, outdoor learning spaces and our sensory garden is currently under development,” Sarah adds.
Bentley Park-based St Therese’s has taken a similar stance, looking both locally and globally at approaches to re-shaping culture, pedagogy, the learning environment and its image of the child when they chose to adopt the Reggio Emilia approach to education. “The principles of Reggio Emilia are around the image of the child, making learning visible, parent participation and the environment as crucial elements to learning,” said Jacqueline Jackson, St Therese’s Assistant Principal Administration. “There is a growing body of evidence showing the importance of a strong start in life including the role of experience, environment and relationships and their direct effect on achievement and wellbeing,” Jacqueline explained. The south-side school, like any other school, offers the Australian curriculum, but as a Catholic school, they offer a holistic development of the whole child – intellectually, spiritually, socially, emotionally and physically. Students are encouraged to value diversity, develop a sense of social justice and become valued, contributing members of society. Through the implementation of the Reggio Emilia principles, they seek to create a more inclusive culture of learning that gives students opportunities to have the best start in life. St Therese’s views raising the bar on student wellbeing as its moral imperative. “The notion of students becoming the best versions of themselves is why we do what we do.” So whether you’re prepping for prep or looking for a new school that fits your family, Holy Cross and St Therese’s will nurture your child to encourage them to be the best possible version of themselves.

Smithfield Village Early Learning Centre Words by Janie Barton
Remember when you were young and spent your days outdoors, playing in the sandpit, digging in the garden, feeding farm animals and splashing around in a make-shift water park? While those activities aren’t daily occurrences for many children today, they are at the Smithfield Village Early Learning Centre. The innovative early learning centre is designed to give young children the opportunity to experience and learn from the great outdoors while, at the same time, grow in an innovative environment led by passionate, caring educators. Opened in 2014 by John Wall, who has built over 400 childcare centres in Australia, the centre has become a huge hit with families. So much so, that all 126 placements are full, and there are over 200 children on the waiting list. To cater to the growing demand and Smithfield’s waiting list, John is building the Bluewater Village Early Learning Centre, which will open in 2019. “I am the biggest kid in Australia,” John said. “I spend many hours observing children having real play, and our centres are about children learning to entertain themselves, which is an important mindset for children and also what attracts families to our centres.” The centre’s outdoor environment is unique to Cairns in many ways. It has four sand pits, two large bike tracks, a waterpark, a large grassy area for children to run around in, a Barnyard, which is home to goats, chickens, ducks, reptiles and a wide range of

“Our head chef has also implemented a Mini Master Chef Program every day,” centre director Kim Dunbar said. “He teaches children about the ingredients in food and shows them that good food doesn’t come out of packages.”

The centre’s indoor learning areas are equipped with state-ofthe-art resources for all development stages of children and includes furniture such as tables, chairs and book shelves made from natural materials, not plastic. Having 20 years’ experience in the industry has given John the insight to understand what children, mums and dads want in a childcare centre. “It’s about the child being excited to go to day care,” he said. “The centres we are building and developing are unique, managing and understanding a balance between education, care, play and ‘wildhood’. This is the type of environment I would wish all children to be part of.”

Following on from the highly successful Smithfield Village Early Learning Centre and catering to its waiting list of 200 children, owner John Wall is currently building a similar centre at Bluewater in Trinity Park. Due to open in February 2019, weather permitting, the centre will have placements for 99 children aged from six weeks to six years. “I believe kids want their ‘wildhoods’ back,” said John. “They want to play for real and want to get dirty. They haven’t learned how to entertain themselves, but are so used to being entertained, whether it’s on screen or in a program. Their imagination suffers, and they miss out on one of the simple joys of life – just regular play.” Bluewater Village Early Learning Centre will feature a unique outdoor environment that includes bike tracks, sand pits, a waterpark, grassy play area, a Barnyard full of goats, chickens, ducks, guinea pigs, reptiles and birds as well as a Garden World, where children will learn to plant, grown and harvest vegetables and herbs. “Like Smithfield Village Early Learning Centre, our philosophy is going back to ‘wildhood’, getting the children back to nature,” centre director Belinda Lister said. “We are trying to get children to use their imaginations to explore the environment. The produce from the garden will also be incorporated into the children’s meals, which will be prepared by a culinary five-star chef. The menu, designed to provide healthy and fresh meals, will include dishes such as sushi, curries, stir fries, grilled fish with mash potatoes and roast beef with roast veggies, to name just some of the meals. John, a leader in childcare who has built over 400 day care centres in Australia in his 20 years in the industry, is a huge believer in encouraging children to learn through play. “I believe child care centres are not all about education,” said John, who visits his Cairns’ centres monthly. “They’re also about real play that children should have as part of their day at care. This is what attracts families to our centres.” While the new purpose-built centre is a bit smaller than it’s Smithfield sister centre, it will also feature caring, highly qualified educators, openplan interiors and tables, chairs and toys made with natural products like wood. It will also include a covered outdoor eating area for children and a parent atrium. “I love how our philosophy is getting children back to nature and utilising the environment,” Belinda said. “We believe it’s okay to involve a little bit of risk. As John says, ‘If they go home with a band aid on, it’s been a good day; they’ve done lots of exploring’!” C i t y L i f e 44 M a g a z i n e

BEING A ROOKIE RECRUITER MICHELLE TRAILL
Starting a new career as a Rookie Recruiter has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least. However, as someone that relishes a challenge and is always looking for the next adventure, here I am. I’ve been lucky enough to join Elite Executive, a recruitment agency specialising in executive placements. In two months as a Rookie Recruiter, I’ve had three valuable insights. My first insight, I’m humbled to have this opportunity. To me being a Recruiter, is a privilege. Establishing new relationships will make me better placed to understand businesses. Being able to work with an organisation to understand their needs to find them their perfect fit. I’m naturally inquisitive so I enjoy asking questions, and yes, listening. Not to reply in order to show my knowledge but to understand so I can deliver the client the best possible result.
Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88
Giving opportunities to people and understanding their motivators in their own careers, working with them to find their ideal role. A role that will affect their family and friends and often their happiness. That is a privilege. Facilitating a career match, that could have a significant effect on an organisation and our region. That is a privilege. I love hearing stories of people that constantly amaze me with the incredible things they do within a community. These are the people that I want to work with to find their next leader, they constantly leave me feeling humbled.
My second insight, comes from Richard Branson.
“Respect is how to treat everyone, not just those you want to impress.” - R I C HAR D B R A NS O N Seeing this quote, reminded me that it is a responsibility to be constantly treating people the way I’d like to be treated. As I had learnt when I have been a job-seeker, I had bad experiences with agencies. Those that don’t return phone calls, don’t look at all aspects of a person but only see skills on a piece of paper and hit a reply email within 2 minutes of submitting an application. I will treat people with the respect they deserve, they are not just a ‘product’ for me, they are my reward for job satisfaction. My third insight, not to be like others. People often cite that having experience is of high importance, I agree with that on some level. However, I think it’s also very beneficial to have a new fresh approach. Sometimes bringing experience from a different industry can be refreshing. Having a mindset to not look outside the box, but to dismantle the box and make it something better, for me is exciting. I have had feedback that recruiters don’t listen to job briefs. I will listen to what my clients say, in order to better understand their requirements and work with the best interests of everyone involved. There will be many more insights for me to learn along the way, however working in a team that is supportive I know are always looking to point me in the right direction. Always be learning. I hope I get the opportunity to work with you and I look forward to hearing your story!

THE POWER OF PR BENEFITS OF EMAIL MARKETING

eCommunications is actually one of the most cost effective, results driven mediums that a business can utilise. Let me share with you a little of what I know on this subject and I’ll let you be the judge. When it comes to marketing your business, it’s important to be where your consumers are. Email use is thriving more than ever before and is used by 95% of online consumers. More people are using their tablets, smart phones and laptops each day and are constantly connected to their email and social media accounts. Email Communication gets to people, no matter where they are – at work or at home because we are literally glued to our devices in this fast paced life. 91% of consumers reported checking their email at least once a day (Exact Target). In fact, it’s not uncommon for consumers to check their email dozens of times each day. According to the Founder of Mobile Digital, John Stuckey - “People would rather give up drinking than their phone.” Using email marketing to promote content and your products and services is a great way to drive more traffic to your website and is a highly effective tool for nurturing leads through the buying cycle. The key is making your eCommunication content interesting, informative and meeting the needs of your target market. I always use the 80/20 rule. 80% information, and only 20% sell. What people are desensitised most to these days is being overtly sold to. The Stats Speak For Themselves • 60% of digital media is now consumed on a mobile device • 66% of email recipients made at least one purchase last year based on a promotional email • 7 in 10 people say they made use of a coupon or discount from a marketing email in the prior week • For every $1 spent, $44.25 is the average return on email marketing investment. • 82% of consumers open emails from companies • Email marketing spend grows 10% year on year 7 Benefits of Email Marketing 1. A very simple cost effective way to relate with your publics in ‘real’ time They say it takes at least seven touch points before a consumer will make a purchasing

decision. Email communication is a noninvasive way of remaining ‘in touch’ with your community of existing and potential customers. 2. Strengthens Relationships, Loyalty & Trust Email marketing is a great way to build oneon-one relationships with current and potential customers. By creating well-written and engaging newsletters and emails, readers get to know, like, and trust you and your company. 3. Increases Brand Awareness & Keeps Your Brand Top of Mind Each time an email is sent to consumers it is building brand awareness of your company, products and services and it reinforces your value proposition. This helps to keep your company’s name top of mind. 4. Be Ultra Targeted With Segmentation With email marketing, lists of each market segment based on demographics, interest, buying patterns, industry groups etc can be created, enabling you to craft a marketing message that speaks directly to each audience and meet their specific need. 5. Low Cost & Good ROI Compared to other marketing channels, email marketing costs very little. For every $1 spent, $44.25 is the average return on email marketing investment. 6. Easy to Execute Setting-up an email campaign is relatively easy. There are many email marketing resources and software companies online that enable you to DIY. But to really stand out, instead of using a pre-made template, I recommend having an email template custom designed consistent with your company branding so your touch point is given maximum impact. Making sure it renders correctly in all email programs is essential also so engaging a professional that knows how to do this is paramount if you do not have the skills in house. 7. Easy to Measure The majority of email marketing software programs have analytics at the back end of every email you send. So you can very effectively track the metrics and report on your open rates, click-through rates, bounce emails and conversion rates. This information is key to understanding what is working and what needs improvement. Email marketing is a highly effective public relations tool that needs to be given significant consideration when developing your marketing strategy.
DIVORCE HOTEL
NARDINE COLLIER
How is this for an interesting idea... The Sydney Morning Herald recently published an article (12 /9/18) entitled “Divorce hotels are coming to Australia”. “The premise is simple: couples check in to a hotel in two separate rooms for two nights, where they undergo mediation processes behind closed doors and away from outside responsibilities. The idea is that, over the course of a 48-hour hotel stay, all divorce arrangements can be made.” A couple were quoted as saying that it worked for them as it means they could get away from day to day obligations and really focus on their ‘divorce’ ( by which, they meant, their property settlement and possibly arrangements for children. )
N ard i n e Collier is an accr edi t ed S pecial i st in Fa m ily La w, a M edi at i on S pecial i st a nd Managi ng Di r ect or of Workp l ac e Le ga l Solut i ons, Cai r ns Med i atio ns a nd Collie r Law yer s.
“The CEO of DivorceHotel, Jim Halfens developed the idea in the Netherlands around seven years ago and the company is now operating in the US and the UK, with an Australian expansion planned for 2019. His idea involves providing all the professional support a couple need to arrange their divorce (“lawyer, mediator, financial advisor, maybe therapist”) all under the same roof at the same time.” The article is quick to point out that this idea wouldn’t suit everyone and would only work if couples were amicable. It’s definitely an interesting idea and I can see how it could be adapted to be more affordable. Much as I’d love to stay at a fancy hotel for 2 nights, that might be out of the reach of many; and really, not necessary. The idea of all the necessary players, such as the mediator, lawyers, accountants, financial planners, etc getting together in one place is not
new. “Collaborative law” is a concept where the parties do just that. It’s a voluntary process where couples sign an agreement to engage in the process. They also agree to disqualify their current lawyers from representing them in any future family-related litigation. That particular rule doesn’t appeal to me, but the idea of everyone being accessible AND trying to get things done in a focussed time limited process, is a great idea. Instead of a Divorce Hotel, you could have a DIVORCE DAY ( which you could also call “D-Day”) where you would: • Choose a family law mediator. • Both engage lawyers for this process • Have the mediator and the lawyers negotiate and agree a schedule of dates – i.e. the date by which all documents have to be exchanged by, valuations obtained, etc, so that by the time D-Day rolls around you both know what your assets and liabilities are and have received advice as to what is a just and equitable outcome. • Arrange any other participants such as accountants, financial planners, mortgage broker, etc. (Although I would recommend you had your approval to refinance a mortgage already organised before ‘D-Day”) • Book a neutral venue – the Boland Centre in Cairns is excellent. • Set aside the day and make appropriate arrangements for child care. You might both agree that you will not leave the venue until the matter is finalised. In which case…maybe you will need that room after all?

PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS IN A NEW RELATIONSHIP
Imagine this common scenario: financially shaken from a post relationship breakdown, you have met someone you want to spend a lot of time with - maybe even move in with. Protecting your assets in a new relationship is probably not something you want to think about or even discuss with your new partner in the rosy glow of new romance. I have a very different view - it should be high on the agenda and early in the relationship.
SUZANNE HADLEY
My experience tells me that one of the biggest issues in relationship breakdowns is a five-letter word - money - and a failure to discuss how money is spent, frequently leads to conflict in a relationship and often breakdown of that relationship. When you are making that fresh start, working on your Life Plan B, you have an opportunity to draw clear boundaries if financial issues were a problem in a previous relationship. Protecting your assets in a new relationship does not have to be complicated if both parties are clear on financial arrangements. A financial agreement, often referred to as a Binding Financial Agreement [BFA] is an option. It is an expensive option because these documents are tailor made to individual circumstances. Early in a relationship, where you are both head over heels in love but still not sure how long the romance will last, is probably not the time to spend serious money on a BFA. Drawing up a BFA takes a lot of discussion between the parties and their respective lawyers and is much easier if the boundaries were set early on. Sometimes de facto relationships just happen, starting with a night here and there, turning to a weekend, then every weekend and before you know it, you are living in a de facto relationship. Protecting
your assets in a new relationship, if you have set the boundaries clearly, minimises the possibility of confusion arising over ownership. Nothing is ever completely watertight because individual circumstances vary but by following a list of Do’s and Don’ts you can minimise your risks. First the Do’s Keep your finances strictly separate. Have your partner pay board or rent if you have your own home. You may decide on a figure that amounts to one half of the overheads of mortgage and utilities. Be responsible for your own debts and liabilities. Make your individual financial decisions with no accountability to the other for that decision. Now for the Don’ts - Don’t open a joint bank account or accumulate assets in joint names. No matter how convenient tax wise, don’t make your partner a shareholder in a business or company you operate, or claim for your partner as a dependent. It would not be wise to include your partner as a beneficiary in a trust or be a beneficiary of your superannuation fund or your Will. If all this sounds dreadfully negative and untrusting, remember we are talking about new relationships here, not longestablished relationships. Having set the guidelines clearly early in the relationship can prevent a lot of anguish should it breakdown and makes it easier to formalise a BFA should you choose to do so. These are just a brief outline of some of the major steps you can take to protect your assets. As with everything in life, individual circumstances vary. Should you need to consider your specific situation seek legal advice from a suitably qualified Family Lawyer.

THREE PRACTICAL WORK TIPS TO STAY FOCUSED & STRESS FREE DEB JOHNSTONE
It’s amazing to think we are already in the last 90 days of the year. I remember my mum saying as she got older time seemed to speed up and I have to say, it certainly seems that way for me too. These last three months can be exciting as we attend events, achieve goals and at the same time plan for the following year in that last sprint to the Christmas and New Year holidays. For many people though, it can be a stressful and overwhelming time, where they notice the things they haven’t achieved yet and they pull out all stops to get it done. They juggle and struggle and screech to the finishing line just in the nick of time. The thing is, it doesn’t have to be this way. Because I have often found in both these scenarios there is a similar workload, it’s just that they are experiencing it differently. So what’s the difference between those who find it exciting and those who find it stressful? What I have noticed in my work is that it’s related to the way we manage our mindset.
Mindset and NLP Coach CBWC Sole Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist 2016 and 2017
If we don’t manage our mindset well then we can feel that sense of overwhelm and stress. This slows us down, even though it doesn’t feel that way at the time. When we manage our mindset effectively then we stay calm even though we have the same amount of work. And because our emotional state affects our productivity levels it means we can achieve far more in a much shorter time frame. Over the years I have discovered practices that help me have an effective mindset. They serve me well in maintaining my state and working productively even in high workload times.
Chunk things down Prioritising is important but also quite difficult if we haven’t first chunked things down. When we chunk things down, we create bite-sized pieces that are easier to manage and it becomes exciting instead of stressful. Its much more effective to do this with your goals at the beginning of the year, but you can still utilize this powerful tool now. Start with breaking things down before you start work, just as you would a bar of chocolate before you eat it Block it in Many people jump from one thing to another and it is an exciting way to work, but its not the most effective way and if we continue to do it, can create stress and overwhelm. When we work in time blocks, we can prioritize well and work really productively. This means chunking down to your daily tasks, blocking in time to do them and not having a break or doing anything else until the time block is complete. Laser focus on the step you are on If we feel stressed or overwhelmed we are thinking too far ahead. When we chunk things down well and work in time blocks, then it gives us the space to focus on what we are working on in the present moment. This is where we are at our most powerful and work most productively, because it changes our state. This means stress and overwhelm dissipates and you work with a sense of calm. So turn off social media, your phone and emails, and laser focus on the step you are on. In summary, maintaining an uplifted state is essential in how successful we are or not and anything we do to care for our mind, body and spirit will contribute positively to this, because they are all connected. It is vital to work with all three.

Having a garden memorial for your loved one’s ashes is the perfect way of keeping their memory close by so generations of family members can visit, which is why the lush, tropical and peaceful gardens at the Cairns Crematorium are so popular.
The perfect resting place
“Our beautiful gardens offer a tranquil setting where families can come and pay respect to the memory of their loved ones,” said Aquilar Luki, manager of Gordonvale Funeral Home, an extension of the Cairns Crematorium. “The gardens are surrounded by lush greenery which creates a picturesque and dignified resting place.” There are a number of garden options available to suit all styles and budgets. The Family Gardens are designed for two people but are large enough to include up to eight family members and are surrounded by a large central garden. There are also Established Gardens with large garden beds such as ‘Lilly Pilly Lane’ and ‘Peaceful Cove’ to choose from and where plaques are placed around the edges of the

garden. There is also a Garden Broder option on selected gardens, where plaques are placed on the garden edge. Niche Walls are designed to keep loved one’s ashes secure forever. The crematorium has two of these beautifully designed walls and have single and double sites available. Scatter Gardens, located beside a lily pond, are available for those who wish to scatter the ashes of their loved ones. A Granite Book of Remembrance, a plaque-only memorial, is perfectly suitable if ashes are scattered on the grounds or located elsewhere. “Our landscaped gardens have been around for more than 20 years,” Aquilar said. “We often hear from individuals how amazed they are at the tranquil and peaceful setting they find here.”

Most of us treat our face differently to the rest of the body, as the skin on the face and the body are not the same. However, most women are unaware the skin on the vulva is different too! Vulva is the general name given to the part of female genitalia that lies outside of the vagina. It includes the mons pubis (the fatty pad that is covered by pubic hair), labia majora and minora (the outer and inner lips), the clitoris, the urinary opening (urethra), the vagina opening, and the perineum (the area between the anus and vagina). This skin is very sensitive and delicate, making it susceptible to problems when improperly cared for, which unfortunately is common due to myths, commercial advertising, and fashion. Contrary to popular belief, the female sex organs are designed to self-clean. The vagina has a rich blood supply and special glands that produce mucous and lubrication to “flush” out germs. Together with the acidic pH produced by the normal bacteria that live inside the vaginal cavity, it helps to protect the vagina and vulva from harmful germs. Washing and Cleaning The use of products such as body shampoo, soap, feminine hygienic products, deodorant, wipes and douches can cause harm in various ways. Frequent cleaning, especially with products, can strip the skin of its natural oil making it dry and susceptible to further insults. The chemicals in these products, such as perfumes and preservatives, can be too harsh. It can also disrupt the normal acidic pH in the vagina, thus promoting the growth of the unhealthy or harmful germs. Good practices: • Wash the vulva with hands once a day with warm water only • Limit the frequency and time in hot bath, especially bubble baths • Avoid using washcloths, loofahs, or puffs as these are too rough for the vulval skin and they are known to harbour germs • Pat dry or dry with hairdryer set at “cool” after cleaning Sanitary Products The use of tampons, sanitary pad, menstrual cup or menstrual underwear is a very personal choice. So far, there is no convincing evidence to say that one is superior to the others. Women need to weigh the pros and cons of each option to decide the best product to use.
Sanitary pads may not be suitable for all women, especially women with vulval problems as pads can cause chafing and prolonged contact with menstrual blood can cause irritation, especially when the skin is already brittle. The use of adhesive at the back of the pads may also mean some are not as “breathable”, trapping the moisture and dampness which can increase the risk of irritation and infection. Good practices: • Change sanitary products regularly • Do not use scented sanitary products as chemicals can cause irritation and alter the natural pH in the vagina • Do not use panty liners on a daily basis between your periods. Instead, change your underwear frequently if you have to Clothing and Underwear Fitted clothing, such as skinny jeans, leggings, and gym pants are fashionable and body flattering but unhealthy for the vulva. Tight clothing puts pressure on the vulva and can cause rubbing and irritation. The tightness and many synthetic materials do not allow for good air circulation, hence supporting a warm environment, retaining sweat and trapping moisture. Some women do better with silk underwear as its fibres are perfectly smooth, regular and rounded thus less friction or irritation. Good practices: • Loose fitting pants or skirt is better than tight fitting pants • Wear gym pants for workout only and change out of it after exercising • Avoid panty hose or tights. Instead, try kneehigh or thigh-high stockings • Avoid harsh textile material and nonbreathable fabric (e.g. nylon, viscose, polyester, etc) • Avoid G-strings as it causes rubbing and it is easier for germs to spread from the anus to vulva • Wear all cotton or silk underwear instead of underwear made of synthetic material even if it has a cotton crotch • Consider not wearing underwear at night time or at home to allow air flow In part 2, we will explore the effect of other common practices such as toilet paper, laundry, lubricants, and hair removal on vulval health.

BENEFITS OF HEARING BETTER WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF AUDIOHEALTH JOA N N A MAG E E
I am very proud to have founded AUDiOHEALTH and brought together a team of like-minded caring clinicians whose focus is firmly on our clients or people as I refer to those we help – meeting their needs and exceeding their expectations! This ethos enables us to serve more people giving them the delight and joy of better hearing, restoring connections, empowering lives, reversing depression and isolation, improving cognitive abilities and increasing enjoyment of life. Hearing loss impacts negatively on all aspects of a person’s life. We make a huge difference not only to the individual but to the family and community when we help to restore sounds so that they can hear clearly again and participate more fully in life. We never underestimate the power each of us has to make life better for someone else and each day I take a few moments to reflect on what we have accomplished to make someone’s life better. Our people receive the best care and service from caring qualified clinicians who are enthusiastic about improving hearing. They actively listen and look for solutions to solve each individual’s problems.

We are unique in the profession for a number of reasons. We are the only Practice in Australia with three generations of family involvement with each generation having served on a National Peak Professional Board. A little known fact is that less than 17% of the profession are currently Australian and privately owned with the majority of clinics being part of a large corporate chain owned overseas. Our people benefit from the widest possible selection of hearing solutions. If it is available in Australia we offer it. We can source product worldwide too. In fact, we’ve been the first clinic in Australia to launch new innovative hearing solutions. This coupled with affordability, interestfree repayment plans, trade-ins, discounts and best prices is a sure winner. Eligible Pensioners and Veterans have access to fully subsidized products or can opt for a no gap top-up giving them better technology without being out of pocket.
CAN A TINY HEARING AID THAT
DISAPPEAR?
C i t y L i f e 56 M a g a z i n e
Our outreach work with the Starkey Hearing Foundation contributes to helping children in need who otherwise would be unable to hear – clients can participate with us and make a difference by donating their old hearing aids. I’ve assisted at missions in Indonesia and the South Pacific with like-minded colleagues from throughout Australia who gave of their time and expertise to help hundreds of children to hear better. Without the support of the Foundation the children would not have any access to hearing assistance. Clients sense our genuine desire to make a difference and often comment on the atmosphere in our clinics in the most positive way. Despite the fact we are all extremely busy the overwhelming feeling from our clients is that they are appreciated, listened to and are in good hands. Lasy year we had the privilege of fitting an Australian icon and musician, Kamahl who choose to come to us because of our outstanding service. We fitted him with the latest technology and he loves being able to fully appreciate the rich sounds of music again and to participate in conversation without having to ask people to repeat themselves. I enjoyed a luncheon with Kamahl in a very noisy restaurant and he didn’t miss a word. But people like our very elderly lady of 101 years of age are every bit as important. She is over the moon with her newfound hearing, freedom and enjoyment of life. We’ve opened up a whole new world to this lady. Age is no barrier. There’s never been a better time to improve your hearing and your quality of life with so many products delivering outstanding results. Call us for a free hearing check and discussion on the options available to suit you on 4041 7860 or volunteer to participate in the trial of the unique Lyric hearing device at our Cairns clinic at 125 Grafton Street or maybe a visiting site is more convenient at Mareeba, Yungaburra, Innisfail or Mission Beach. We’ve recently opened a new clinic at Atherton for people on the Tablelands, it’s at 3/3 Cook Street, Atherton.
MULTIGENERATIONAL LIVING WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? RO S LYN S MIT H
We have just released a single story multigenerational home for display at 2 Master Circuit, Bluewater Estate at Trinity Beach. Grandparents are moving in, the kids are staying longer and everyone needs their own space. Are you just about busting out of your existing family home and finding that there is not enough space for all the people that are now living there? Think about the idea of combining all these spaces under one roof and build a home to suit. This home is catering for the changing Australian household and showcases flexibility, privacy and separate living space opportunities that are only available in multigenerational home design. The best design should make the most of the land’s features so for comfortable tropical living your new home design should take into account the land’s aspects. Elements like facing the home in the best direction for cooling breezes and making sure the livable areas can be used all year round by shading and ensuring the practicality of the home. It simply comes down to good planning. It can be surprising what can be done whether your land is 2000m2 or 400m2 when utilising the space the land gives you. If we can take this concept into
account then you and your family will be able to stay in your new home for longer. This new display home maximizes natural light with an internal courtyard which helps increase the spacious feel as well as cross airflow. With the use of some great energy saving design features like unique ceiling fans, expansive tinted glass areas and solar energy we ensure this home will last the distance. If you are looking to build a new home, come in and have a chat about what we can provide. We have a variety of Home and Land packages, including multigenerational designs, in many suburbs from first home owners and investment homes to individual custom designed homes, so I am sure we will have something that will suit you. Come and see me in our new display home at 2 Master Circuit, Bluewater Estate, Trinity Beach and have a chat about the idea of building a new home.

CHAD ANDERSON
REPRESENTING CAIRNS Words by Stacey Carrick
Independent Candidate for Leichhardt Chad Anderson would love to represent Cairns as the voice of the people.
locals to engage in tertiary education and specific trade courses, supporting the tourism industry through funding projects and supporting immigration.
“There is absolutely no representation from any of the political parties today,” he said. “So I’m creating an independent model of political leadership for Leichhardt that the future generation can build on and develop to create and foster representation and democratic service to the community.
“I’ll also be fighting for youth and teacher mental health and taking action on a review into the role of the Federal Government in managing education in the region.
“As the first Independent federal representative for Leichhardt, I will stand in Parliament on behalf of the people of Cairns, and support policy and initiatives for the people without the need for party approval or agreement. “I’m providing a new leadership model built for the people, in collaboration with the people, a model that the future generation can build on - this is as much about leadership as it is about politics. “We need to be the change that we want to see in the world - my goal is to demonstrate leadership in a political change context in this region by taking steps to create a model of government that is independent of party influence and politics.”
“At present, I’m in conversation with people in both South Korea and China regarding future relationships that could benefit all countries in the context of tourism, business and education. “I would also like to increase funding to universities to improve education in the areas of tourism and hospitality, aviation, journalism, customer service and trades.” Chad said he has already demonstrated his leadership abilities on many occasions. “There have been numerous events in Cairns in the workplace where I have taken a stand to support my mates and my own rights,” he said. “I’ve also done a great deal of work in Cairns to implement changes for youth representation.
Chad’s plans for the future of Cairns focus on tourism, business and education.
Chad was born and raised in Wollongong, New South Wales, but he is now proud to call Cairns home.
“My plan for the future of Cairns focuses on growing our economy by supporting policies that encourage

raising my family in Cairns - we wouldn’t live anywhere else on Earth,” he said. Chad was teaching up until recently at a number of Cairns schools, a career he has put on hold to focus on his political career. He has also worked in child protection management and indigenous employment services and training. Chad is also involved with Rotary, is the chairperson of the Central Queensland University Alumni and is the owner of the Cairns Youth Leadership Association. “I want to provide a change in leadership to respond to what people need,” he said. “I want to create a political leadership model to give Leichhardt a voice in Parliament. “I am excited about the political shift in the country and the rise of the Independents. “The recent leadership issues within federal politics means the major political parties have lost their connection with the people and lost sight of their role. “The system needs to change, the Australian public needs a voice and we need to become more democratic.”
