Is it just me, or has this year just been a blur? Hours merge into days, days merge into weeks and the months are just slipping away at a rate of knots! One thing I have noticed is that more locals are taking time out to stop and smell the roses a little. I guess a global pandemic will do that to you! … so if there’s a silver lining in all of this for us, it has certainly been about enjoying the time we have left on this earth with the people we care about most. It’s not just locals taking time out to holiday at the moment though, have you seen the tourist numbers in FNQ at the moment? Try getting a seat at a restaurant most nights in the city! It’s absolute mayhem, but in a good Whileway.my family and I are used to being able to just waltz into almost any restaurant in Cairns and find seats prepandemic, it appears we mere mortal locals actually have to make a reservation at the moment! Can you believe it! LOL … a recent 45 minute trek around the city with starving kids one Friday night taught us that reservations are definitely a must in this busy tourist season. I must say, it’s so damn good to see the local hospitality industry abuzz. We are very excited to be bringing you this Winter Edition of CityLife Magazine. It is jam packed with goodness featuring our Annual HOMELife feature with all the things to make your home your sanctuary, a dedicated feature to showcase the amazing Cairns Business Women of the Year for 2022, as well as a Northern Beaches display on all the fabulousness that makes our beaches the go-to weekend Checkdestination.outour newly expanded REVIEWS, from tech to books and what’s hot in home decor, we’ve hand selected our top picks to keep your mind, body and soul nourished this season. CityLife 9 Magazine CityLife COVER STORY

The Salvation Army Cairns Corps consists of an army of men and women who have shown up each and every day no matter the circumstance to walk beside our people in their darkest of hours. From very humble beginnings in 1892 with just a couple of officers servicing Cairns to Cooktown, the Salvation Army now supports a geographical area in Far North Queensland from PNG to Normanton, Mornington Island to Innisfail and every little suburb and township in between and out to the west on the Tablelands. They are made up of predominantly volunteers that we have all become accustomed to having around in tough times to guide us through. Their community development projects and much needed goods, services, emergency support, local partnerships and social enterprise models is what has sustained so many people who have found themselves falling on hard times across generations the world over.

By Danae Jones

This year marks 130 years of continued service for the Salvation Army in the Cairns community. It is a time when the Salvation Army are extending their deepest of thanks to the community for supporting their work throughout this time. But the thanks really ought to be given to the Salvos themselves, for being the constant force of care and support in our local community.

Whether it’s gruelling war times, natural disasters or global pandemics, or supporting those less fortunate through their very personal plights of homelessness, domestic violence or addiction - the Salvos are there giving hope where it’s needed most.

“It is a privilege to be Corps Officer of the Cairns Corps. For 130 years we, as The Salvation Army, have served and ministered to countless thousands. We stand on the shoulders of so many heroes of the faith who have paved the way, setting a wonderful foundation for all the work that we do today. Our reputation and support base within the community is incredible because of the faithfulness of our people throughout the decades. People know who we are, what we stand for, and most importantly who we stand for,” said Major Ben Johnson.

Empathy, compassion and maintaining people’s dignity is always front and centre with the Salvos’ approach to dealing with people.

TheArmySalvationCairns CELEBRATES 130 YEARS

“Particularly with rental prices being as high as what they are the need for our services has risen quite dramatically and that’s not something that we can fix quickly. It’s a longterm solution that is needed. But our response to that is we are pouring more resources into assisting people in these situations and with our Cairns Supported Accommodation Service we are doing a lot more outreach work than we used to, so it’s not just catering for those people staying within our facility, but we’ve got almost the same case load out in the community as well.

It is through this approach that the Cairns Corps now offers a full time drug and alcohol program, delivers full time youth programs to build resilience in our young people and offers daily financial counselling and street chaplaincy services.

For Alison Geno, an Intercultural Ministry Worker at the Salvation Army, she has never known anything other than being in amongst a sea of red and white, with both of her parents now retired Salvation Army Officers. Alison and her siblings have been lending a helping hand to the needy for as long as she can remember.

In the Salvation Army’s very early days the organisation grew rapidly across the world. And while the primary role of the officers was to help the needy, it was also to spread the good word about the gospel and Jesus. “BUT WE HAVE ALWAYS TAUGHT THIS PHILOSOPHY, THAT PEOPLE CAN’T HEAR A MESSAGE WHEN THEIR STOMACHS ARE RUMBLING AND THEY’RE LIVING IN POVERTY. AND THEY CAN’T MAKE A DECISION ABOUT THEIR FUTURE WITHOUT THOSE ESSENTIAL NEEDS BEING ADDRESSED,” SAID MAJOR JOHNSON.

“Pretty much from when I was born I have been a Salvationist. The Salvation Army send their officers to different places all over the country to serve and so that was our childhood, we went wherever our parents needed to go to do their work and help people. And to be one of the lucky ones to be here 130 years on to celebrate this milestone and acknowledge where it all started and the hardships that were faced by our predecessors, it is a great feeling to honour them and the great work they did to get us to where we are today,” Mrs Geno said.

“We have a policy within our organisation that no one ever leaves empty handed. And when people are going through crisis, they need a solution within that moment. But there’s usually other circumstances around that experience that need addressing that are causing them to have addiction issues for example, such as trauma from abuse. So it’s not just about fixing that immediate need, it’s about saying why have they got to this point, what issues are they identifying

CityLife 10 Magazine CityLife COVER STORY

Each and every month they support at least 160 families with emergency assistance in Cairns alone and that number continues to climb as the cost of living increases and the city’s housing crisis deepens.

CityLife 11 Magazine CARE & SUPPORT 160 families are given crisis support every month in Cairns Each year 5,800 women and children at risk of experiencing domestic and family violence are assisted nationally 1,889,000 sessions of care were provided nationally across all social programs last year SHELTER 887,500 crisis beds provided to people who experienced homelessness last year nationally NATIONALFLOODEMERGENCYRELIEF 42,647 meals and refreshments served at evacuation centres $5,327,889 distributed in financial assistance 25,359 recovery grants issued 26,184 households assisted CityLife COVER STORY with that they want to address at that point and working with them from there,” said Major Johnson.

And while donating to the Salvation Army is something that assists them in doing their work and is always welcomed, all officers will agree that people being willing to volunteer is just as needed. “We are often doing things in the community that require a lot of manpower, so while people may not have the capacity to donate money to our cause, time is just as valuable to us. People offering their time is an incredible gift that we can always do with more of,” Mrs Geno said. One thing is for sure, the Salvation Army community is stronger than ever in Cairns today, the recent attendance to their 130 year celebrations at the Cairns Corps with people from all walks of life flooding into their facilities, is a very real example of that. And while they are taking a moment to reflect and celebrate their great work in the region to date, they also have their sights firmly set on expanding their reach and servicing those less fortunate for many more generations to come.

Major Ben Johnson says it is that long term journey they embark on with people that achieves such positive long-term outcomes, and what holds the organisation in such high esteem. The money raised each year from the annual Red Shield Appeal through the Business Launch and Doorknock Appeal directly funds services such as The Cairns Supported Accommodation Service. In May this year the FNQ community raised close to $130,000 through the Red Shield Appeal to financially support services carried out by the Salvos. Sadly, while this was a fantastic result by all for raising the funds and beating the target set of $100,000, it doesn’t even begin to scrape the surface of what is actually required to meet the need we currently face as a community to support our most vulnerable.

It was in 1913 that the first Salvation Army quarters opened its doors in Cairns through its first physical building. In 1981 they then opened the first Soup Kitchen and established Centennial Lodge, a crisis homelessness shelter still in existence today but recently renamed The Cairns Supported Accommodation Service. The crisis accommodation service alone has now expanded to not only offer a roof over people’s heads and a warm bed to sleep in at night, but a dedicated case management program to transition the most vulnerable into employment along with permanent accommodation in the community so that people can get their lives back on track once and for all.

“In any community these days you need to partner with other agencies. People like Djarragun College, Centacare, St Vinnies and Anglicare, we always try to work alongside them as well. We try and mesh in, rather than duplicate, because we all need to stretch our resources as far as we can,” said Major Johnson.

Mrs Geno takes great pride in the work she and her colleagues do, and while not glamorous work at times, she says it is deeply “Therewarding.Salvation Army will go into places where there is a need. Maybe into places where most other people may not want to go. The Salvation Army was originally founded in London in the poorest areas of town and that’s where we really began and we are mandated to be in those places even today. It’s the most amazing and humbling thing to be a part of people’s journeys and while not all things end well with everyone, when they do, and you see someone’s life change for the better at the end of their journey, it does make you want to keep going. And so that’s why as an adult I choose to do this role now as I am so passionate about what we do for people and what great outcomes we can achieve together,” Mrs Geno said. The Salvation Army are not alone doing the remarkable work that they do and they know all too well how important it is to collaborate with other agencies to ensure the needs of the people are met.

“I also felt the need to bring relief to the stress of choosing swimwear, I wanted to provide options of clever bather pieces, whilst having some fun & ensuring a positive result of your shopping experience. I wanted, whilst doing all this, for you to enjoy the special charm of Palm Cove.”

owner of two Palm Cove clothing & swimwear boutiques is often asked “Why two boutiques in Palm Cove?”

“So tell me readers, have I succeeded in providing two great excuses for you to enjoy the Palm Cove charm?” Annie asks.

Her response, “I wanted to encourage customers to make a day out of their visit to both Palm Cove stores, by creating two very differently stocked boutiques further enough apart that as you strolled between the two, you would also take in the sea air and stop and enjoy a nice coffee or lunch. One clever customer I know starts with a visit to a nail salon and finishes her day shopping with a relaxing massage. “

“My staff are sincere and simply want to help you. They won’t vomit out some rehearsed line or tell you how great you look in everything. There is no hard selling - it’s crucial my customers don’t feel pressured in any way.”

Annie says that whilst her stores were originally dedicated to the ladies, the men aren’t forgotten, as both stores now have a generous selection, aptly called MANZONE.

Annie’s mission was & is to provide customers with choice, through a fun, positive and personal shopping experience – something you just can’t get online. “I care about my customers and I want everyone to receive compliments in their outfits.”

Annie suggests, “for parking in Palm Cove, turn left off Cedar Road, into Williams Esplanade, where you will find about 50 carparks near the jetty. Park and stroll along the footpath that meanders beside the beach, and enjoy the dappled shade from the trees overhead. At a casual pace, it’s about four minutes, along Williams Esplanade from the jetty to Annie’s at the Beach at Peppers Beach Club and a further seven minutes to Annie’s second store, Beach Catwalk on Veivers Road. Obviously that is the direct route, and the length of time it takes visiting both stores depends on how many cocktails you enjoy along the way!”

Krystle Tokunai, owner and founder of Tokunai Hair Spa, was named the Businesswomen of the Year. Krystle, who has been in hairdressing for 22 years and a business owner for 14 years, believes you should do everything you love or not at all.

Vanessa Allen won the Small Business of the Year accolade owner of Adhesive Communication and has years of experience in PR, brand managing and television producing, and she strives on creating marketing strategies that are successful for her clients.

“I think these awards are incredible for anyone in any phase of their business life because it really does force you to take stock of your life and reflect on yourself as a person, your business style and what you’re doing as a leader, and that’s really important,” President Watkins added.

Tough job for judges

Sarah Debono, owner of SILK Laser Clinic Cairns, was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year; Janet McIntyre from My Pathway was awarded the Manager in Business of the Year award and Sandy Davies of HappyPause was named Sole Entrepreneur of the Year.

“The caliber of entrants was absolutely incredible,” she said. “There are so many unique contributions that these women are making to business in our Cairns community. Many categories were deliberated for hours by the judges, who said it was a shame there could only be one winner because all the finalists were just remarkable.”

CBWC president Watkins said 270 people attended the awards, more than a 60 per cent increase from last year’s attendance. “I think being a part of the CBWC is a great opportunity for women,” she said. “The biggest benefit of being a member is actually having a support network around you who understand and who you can call on when needed. It’s a really strong network of support. “Sometimes our lives get out of alignment juggling work and family life, and we need the right people around us to get us back on track. I believe the CBWC community does exactly that. It’s about having a large circle of friends and people who you can call on for support.”

Choosing the winners of the recent Cairns Business Women’s Club awards was no easy feat for the judges this year, according to CBWC president Krista Watkins.

Businesswomen of the Year was awarded to Tahlia O’Brien, owner and operator of Kukubaka, a FNQ business that supports awareness, education and empowerment of First Nation’s people, history and culture.

Nicola Bakker was awarded the Michelle Commins Legacy Award. She has dedicated many years to working for the not-for-profit sector, which is why she opened her own charity Moyamoya Australia to support others with Moyamoya Thedisease.Indigenous

CityLife CBWC AWARDS

Filling out the awards nomination forms were quite in depth and gave the women a chance to really look at what they have is quite a process,” President Watkins said. “It’s not about popping in a nomination and someone gets picked. We have a half-day workshop where we have all sorts of professionals there to help them and offer advice.”

The 2022 awards had 270 people attending, more than 60 who attended last year’s event, and almost 80 nominations.

The CBWC officially opened in 1985 with a vision to improve the profile of women in business in Cairns. The awards started soon after with less categories that are currently awarded, with Robyn Stewart winning the inaugural Business Owner Award.

“I just assumed I’d get an email to say if I won or not,” she laughed. “It was quite a substantial process. I struggle to talk about myself, but the process made me realise what I have achieved, and that I’ve done okay.”

Taking the advice from one of her high school teachers led Krystle Tokunai on the path towards an awardwinning career. The founder of Tokunai Hair Spa, who has been in the hairdressing industry for 21 years, won the distinguished Cairns Women’s Business Club’s 2022 Business Woman of the Year award. Born in PNG, Krystle went to boarding school in Toowoomba after which she studied hairdressing.

Krystle’s core business philosophies are honest, simple and highly successful. “My philosophy is to have fun and build a team so strong they don’t know who the boss is,” she said. “Treating staff like family is probably one of the biggest things. It’s funny because I’ve done a lot of leadership programs, and they tell you not to get close to your staff. From day one, I went against that rule!” Her authentic concern for others is also reflective in the way she treats her clients. “Our clients aren’t just clients to us,” she said. “We’re interested in what they do outside of being a client, and I think that’s what brings us together like one big family. “We are our clients’ personal cheerleaders, cheering them on to motivate them to create the life they want, whether it be through hair to gain confidence in themselves, to pump them up for that interview or just to have an escape from their busy schedules.”

“Itchildren.takes a village,” she said. “We also have friends who help out and even sometimes my staff will help. I’m very lucky.”

“We do in-salon training within our own team and also do external training, and our apprentices go to college as well,” she said. “Our senior team attend Brisbane Fashion week and Melbourne Fashion week each “Weyear. also hold the only fashion event in Cairns every year at the salon, called #BecauseFashion. We can hold approximately 120 people, and the tickets usually sell out in a couple of days.”

“I REALLY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO CAREER WISE AT THAT TIME,” SHE SAID. “ONE OF MY TEACHERS AT SCHOOL TOLD ME I SHOULD TRY HAIRDRESSING, SO I ENROLLED IN A SCHOOL IN BRISBANE.”

And the rest, as they say, is history. She moved to Cairns following her schooling in Brisbane in 2001 and began working in the industry. After seven years, she opened her own salon. “That was a very impulsive decision,” she said. “I walked out of my other job and had no idea what I was going to do. My husband suggested I went out on my own, so I did.”

As the hairdressing industry is constantly evolving and changing, Krystle ensures she and her team are constantly training and upskilling.

Vanessa Allen of ADhesive Communication

Vanessa believes that, just like when Seven were willing to invest in her, she is willing to invest in the growth and happiness of her team. Personal development and growth are achieved through a training program where each person undertakes four learning objectives each year, which the business pays for and allows time within working hours to complete. One-on-one meetings and group sessions to brainstorm for clients as well as including her team in all aspects of business planning are among some of her initiatives.

Vanessa’s marketing career has flourished ever since, leading her to open her own marketing agency, ADhesive Communication, in 2016. “I absolutely love what I do,” she said, explaining that a mixture of creativity, organisation and business insights inspire her and her team to create marketing strategies for clients that deliver a return on their investment. “Our vision is to stimulate powerful business growth through marketing, inspiration and a little bit of fun.”

Janet, who celebrated her birthday last week and who is mother to four and Nanny to four, has been at My Pathway for six years. She has been in her current managerial role for five years, in the Self-Employment Assistance Program, which was revamped from the New Business Assistance Program (NEIS) in July this year, helping people achieve success in self-employment through training, support and business mentoring.

While she and her team have seen a lot of success stories, Janet says her participants’ accomplishments are more than just starting a new direction.

“Never in a million years did I think I’d win,” said the My Pathway SelfEmployment Assistance Program Manager who struggles to talk about her own achievements but can easily boast about her staff and participants accomplishments. “I felt outside my comfort zone throughout the entire process, but it was probably the best journey I’ve been on.

“The workshop before the gala ball was not just about entering a competition, it was about empowering you, learning more about yourself and discovering what you’re capable of, and I think that’s what it has done for me. I’m not one for putting myself out there, but this has given me the opportunity to grow a bit and start pushing myself a little bit more.”

Janet McIntyre received the best belated birthday present when she was named the winner of the Cairns Business Women’s Club (CBWC) Manager in Business of the Year award at the recent awards ceremony.

They love what they do.”

“I absolutely love my job,” said Janet, who is also passionate about mental health and initiated and developed My Pathway’s mental health policy. “I feel really privileged to do my job because I have the chance to help participants turn their dreams into reality and to really change lives and make them believe in themselves. I’d be lost without him.” Originally from New Zealand, Tina arrived in Australia in 1997. In 2001 she applied for a position as a restaurant manager at Dundee’s. “I was successful and have never looked back,” she said. “I am now the proud director and general manager of Dundee’s.”

ou’d be hard pressed to find someone as passionate about food, wine and people enjoying meals together as Jolene Aiello, Restaurant Manager at the local’s favourite Italian restaurant Piccolo WhetherCucina. it’s her Italian heritage, love of her childhood family gatherings around the dining room table or her pleasure in seeing people enjoying meals and good times together, Jolene is devoted to ensuring people have memorable moments when they sit down together to eat. “I come from a large family and sitting around the dinner table was one of my most favourite memories,” said Jolene, who was a finalist in the Cairns Business Women’s Club (CBWC) Manager in Business Award. “I have three sisters with 11 years between the oldest and the youngest and during dinner was when we all came together. “We had an old school rotary phone on the wall and when it rang during dinner, we weren’t allowed to answer it. That was the time for us to be social and get involved in each other’s lives. It was a very special time for all of us.”

The Canadian born, who has been in Australia for 10 years and is now an Australian citizen, has spent more than 20 years in the hospitality and is highly experienced in the wine, food and service industry. “One thing I value that Piccolo Cucina has given me is seeing people growing their passion and respect for each other’s talents” she said. “I truly work with some of the most amazing people I know. While we spend 40 hours a week together, I’m excited to go to work every day.” She has worked at Piccolo’s for three years, overseeing rostering, stocktaking, managing staff and schedules, recruiting and training staff, organising functions and forecasting and implementing growth strategies, among other responsibilities. She oversees 20 front of house staff and more than 10 back of house, working closely with the Executive Chef.

“Every team member I manage has a different personal motivation and balance for work and life, so I think juggling that is one of the challenges for me,” she said. “I AM CONSTANTLY CHALLENGING MYSELF IN MY ROLE TO KEEP PEOPLE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE BUSINESS BECAUSE IF YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR PEOPLE, THEY TAKE CARE OF THE BUSINESS ITSELF.

Just as the owner Kieran (O’Connor) values balancing my personal work and life, I try to do the same with my Whilestaff.” Jolene has only recently joined the CBWC, she is looking forward to her future with the club. “The club has opened my eyes to a network of amazing and powerful women in this community,” she said. “I already feel more empowered and internally wealthier, and I’m looking forward to getting more involved.’

4. Brown the chicken on both sides, transfer to an oven safe dish and pop into the pre-heated oven for 10-12 minutes. When they’re out of the oven, roll each tender through the pan juices to get a nice glossy coating and plate them up on a serving dish.

2. Wrap half a slice of prosciutto around the middle of each tender, then season them well with sea salt, freshly ground pepper and a good quality olive oil.

3. Heat your pan to a nice hot heat, drizzle with olive oil and place your tenders, seasoned side down, into the pan. You want to hear a nice sizzle, which tells you your pan is hot enough.

5. Place half a bocconcini on the middle of each tender, securing with a skewer. Drizzle with some Japanese mayonnaise, garnish with fresh parsley, and you’re ready to serve.

There are a few things you can look out for that you may need to talk to your pharmacist or health professional about before you start taking a probiotic: skin issues, digestive issues, sugar cravings and also definitely after a course of antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all bacteria, bad and good, so you do need to replenish your body. Gut health and microbiome health are essential to your overall wellbeing, so taking a probiotic can help with your mood, mental health, allergies, inflammation and basically your whole immunity. Taking a quality probiotic is an important part of your daily health routine. The emphasis on quality is because while there are plenty of probiotic products on the market, it is important to consult with your pharmacist or health professional, as with any medicines quality can vary between products. Also probiotics are very much a specialised item for individuals, so the probiotic needs to be suited to your individual needs.

The market leader and the one that’s been on the market longest is Inner Health Plus, but there are plenty of other brands available now, Lifespace and Bio Ceuticals also have quality products and there are plenty of other brands to choose from that focus on specific elements you are trying to enhance.

Commence proceedings If you are not satisfied with the body corporate’s response to your notice, or if the body corporate issues a contravention notice that is not complied with, proceedings may be commenced in the Office of the Commissioner for Body Corporate and Community Management or the Magistrates Court. There, the dispute will be determined in accordance with the law and on a case-by-case basis. It can be useful to obtain legal advice early on, to ensure that you are complying with the framework outlined in the Act and to understand how your body corporate scheme’s by-laws apply to your situation. If you require advice and guidance on a body corporate matter, contact the team at WGC Lawyers who have a special interest in this area.

The particular circumstances of your complaint might also warrant you issuing a formal notice to the body corporate to inform them of a by-law contravention. If you choose to do so, you should ensure that you have sufficient evidence to confirm the basis for your complaint. The body corporate will have 14 days from receiving your notice to notify you whether a contravention notice has been issued to your neighbour.

Queensland’s population seemingly boomed overnight from fellow Australians wanting to flee Covid-19 lockdowns in southern states to create a better lifestyle for themselves and their Accordingfamilies.to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2020 Queensland experienced its highest net gain of interstate migration in over a decade with more than 30,000 people moving interstate to the Sunshine State. It seems that many have decided to embrace community living – whether that be in a duplex, high rise accommodation complex or residential unit block. There are many benefits of community living: convenience, size, and affordability, to name a few. On the other hand, community living can have disadvantages that are inherently connected with people living in high density areas within close proximity to others. One such disadvantage is the common complaint that another lot owner or occupier’s behaviour is causing a nuisance. The Body Corporate and Community Management Act 1997 (Qld) and, typically, a body corporate scheme’s by-laws, contains a good framework to assist owners and occupiers to deal with nuisance complaints. The Act plainly provides that an occupier must not use their lot or the common property in a way that: • causes a nuisance or hazard; • interferes unreasonably with the use or enjoyment of another lot included in the scheme; or • interferes unreasonably with the use or enjoyment of the common property by a person who is lawfully on the common Manyproperty.body corporate schemes also have a by-law which is drafted in very similar, if not the same, terms as the above. It’s important to know that, generally speaking, a lot owner or occupier can do what they like within the confines of their own lot. It is only when an owner or occupier’s behaviour unreasonably interferes with another person’s use of their lot (or the common property) that the behaviour might justify a complaint that warrants further investigation. Of course, what is a nuisance to one may not necessarily be a nuisance to another. Some examples of behaviours that might be considered to be a nuisance are: • cigarette smoke emanating from one property to another; • noisy children riding bikes on common •property;excessive barking caused by a pet. The following are steps that should be taken where an owner or occupier is feeling aggrieved by nuisance-like behaviour: Contact the neighbour Communicate with your neighbour about how their behaviour is impacting you. This might involve knocking on their door, or perhaps sending a handwritten note. In either case, be very clear about the nature of your concerns and your proposed solution. Contact the body corporate If contacting your neighbour leads to an unsatisfactory outcome, consider discussing your concerns with your body corporate manager or the body corporate committee.

THE POWER OF PR™ WITH DANAE JONES DANAE JONES

CityLife 40 Magazine CityLife BUSINESS

With all the talk of doom and gloom and pending recessions, naturally you would be questioning what you’re spending your money on in all aspects of life right now. But one thing history tells us about previous downturns is that the businesses that continued to market themselves and communicate and promote their products and services to their audience, not only survived, but came out stronger on the other side. So while it is prudent to reassess what you are spending your money on, marketing is not an area that you can afford to cut. It is important to review and measure and be objective in your approach. The only way to be objective in your approach with any aspect of your business is to call in the experts. When you are talking legal, get in your trusted lawyer, when you’re talking numbers, tax, cashflow and profit margins, get in your trusted accountant and business adviser. And when you’re talking marketing and public relations, call in your trusted and qualified Marketing Consultant. If you don’t have a trusted lawyer, accountant, business adviser or marketing consultant in your corner, you need to get one of each. It will be the best investment you make in the future of your business. What’s even better in business, is when your expert team know and trust one another so they can give you the best tailored advice to suit you, your business and your industry. Every business is different and so it requires a different approach when it comes to Marketing & Public Relations. All businesses need to have their very own strategic plan that is unique to that business and created to fit its team, vision and goals. Sure, there are some aspects of business that are the same for everyone, but your point of difference in business needs to be celebrated and showcased in these times more so than ever. And guess what, if you have a small budget, that doesn’t mean you can’t invest in strategy. I would argue that due to having only a small budget you need to invest in being more strategic than the average business to ensure you achieve the best bang for your marketing buck.

Danae Jones is Managing Director of PR & Marketing firm Danae Jones Consulting Pty Ltd

My number one tip for every business this quarter – DON’T FOLLOW THE COMPETITION! Blaze your own trail. Be different, show people why they need to work with you over the rest. And I don’t mean by bragging about how good you and your team are on social media, I mean actually delivering it. Remember the old saying ‘actions speak louder than words’ – it’s with this saying in mind I would like every business owner to sit back and think about the customers at the receiving end of their products and services right now and analyse how they can make them feel even better about doing business with you. The positive impact you have on your customers’ lives is of most importance right now. It will pay massive dividends in the long run if you invest in this aspect of your business now.

While the region is grateful for those promises, it is vital that the new ALP Federal Government turns its pledges into reality in its upcoming October 2022 Federal Budget.

Great geopolitical challenges await Australia in the next two decades and how we deal with them will direct the economic fortunes of communities across Australia as we grapple with the increased demands for aid at the same time dealing with increasing demands required to secure our nation. Make no mistake, this is unchartered territory with no proven behavioural rule book to guide us. The new government will require adept diplomatic skills alongside firm resolve to push back when outrageous demands might swamp the boat.

The only certainty we have historically is our growth and prosperity prospects are inextricably linked to our security. There will likely be a force projection base established in PNG as a matter of urgency and in line with this will be a rapidly increased domestic defence capacity deployed north. These are huge opportunities. Our neighbours will continue to generate increasing demands and responses from Australia as the three decade romance with China abates. This is a new world order so be prepared for the ride of our lives.

New research, published last month in Regional Studies, Regional Science, found that most of the growth in Northern Australia was concentrated in urban centres, exacerbating remote disadvantage. Overall, the region grew by only 1.7 per cent, while the rest of Australia grew by 8.2 per cent over the same period. Far North Queensland grew by 5.2 per cent in the first five years the policy was operating but northwest Queensland shrunk by 7.5 per cent. Despite our northern predisposition to “spin” the facts, these are dispiriting figures.

The recent rogue behaviour of the Solomon Islands in their engagement of the Chinese Communist Party in their development plans was not only a wake up call to Australia, but also the Pacific, Polynesian and Melanesian states as well. It is nonsense to refer to this grouping as being “part of our back yard” as they wield far more influence than that portrayed by this characterisation. For years and years they have collectively, and cleverly, demanded more action from Australia to combat climate change going as far as blaming us for rising sea levels on their low lying atolls all the time ignoring robust available scientific evidence to the contrary. We are blamed for other ills as well. While our neighbours court Chinese influence, most are silent on the impact worldwide imposed on us all by China’s activities. Our contribution is but two percent. We rolled over and now we have our Prime Minister on the record as saying we have regained the trust of our neighbours with our new commitment to climate change. Things will change so no more problems with sea levels in the Pacific?

The recently released national census paints a gloomy picture around population growth across Northern Australia despite the 2015 developing Northern Australia policy of the previous Coalition government. This policy paper envisioned a fourfold increase in the region’s inhabitants by 2060, backed by economic diversification and Asiafuelled growth in “bright prospect” sectors such as energy and mining. The mining boom petered out within months of the policy’s release, and diplomatic conflicts have hampered Chinese trade.

All but one of 11 subregions lost people through net migration in the period 2016-20 with recent data suggesting the trend is continuing.

In February 2021 the TNQ episodes of The Amazing Race were televised with more than half a million viewers for each episode. Over the past few weeks the destination has benefitted from the Queensland Government’s investment in the movie industry with Wizards! being shot in the Daintree and Cairns. The arrival of stars Pete Davidson and Orlando Bloom, and Orlando’s partner Katy Perry has received incredible moneycan’t-buy international publicity for Tropical North Queensland. While celebrities are a great boost for destination marketing, they are only a small component of the public relations and campaign activity work underway to promote the region in Australia and overseas. We have just wrapped up our Winter, Eco-Lux and Drive TNQ campaigns on the back of a very successful domestic winter season and are planning for spring activity. Cairns’ first Reconciliation Garden was unveiled in the heart of Cairns to celebrate National Reconciliation Week. A space for healing, sharing and reconciliation. The garden is a collaboration project between the Seville Mercy Conference Centre and Minjil, featuring locally-carved story poles and planted with native species used in Indigenous ceremonies. Seville Mercy Conference Centre General Manager Rod Cole-Clarke said the idea for the garden formed several years ago when he and local elders saw an opportunity to help heal the ongoing rift between Indigenous and nonIndigenous Australians. “We wanted a space that was front and centre at Seville, somewhere that is a conversation starter and that can be used by anyone to keep the conversation going, and to hold cultural awareness training and events,” Mr Cole-Clarke said. “If we can heal even one person, it’s worth it.”

GardenReconciliationfirstOpens

Cairns’

Minjil Cultural and Artistic Director Marun Carl Fourmile said the space was important for reconciliation and the preservation of Indigenous history, language and culture. “We’re very grateful to Rod and the team at Seville for their respect and partnership in bringing the Reconciliation Garden to life,” Mr Fourmile said. “We need allies like the Seville Mercy team who understand the bigger picture of reconciliation and learning. We have designed this space together, as a place of one-ness. The garden really is the perfect symbol of reconciliation and we hope that we can share it and our culture with the people of Cairns, Australia and the world for years to Thecome.”eight story poles were designed and carved from sustainably sourced timber by the Minjil creative team to share important storylines from the local area. “The poles show totems and stories linked to the Cairns area, including the crocodile, cassowary, the two creation brothers, the snake and the scorpion. We have also planted the garden with native species to make a sustainable hub for collection of some important ceremonial plants, such as lemon myrtle and grass trees, which will be used at Seville and in welcome to country and smoking ceremonies across Cairns,” Mr Fourmile Thesaid. Reconciliation Garden was designed and constructed by local Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and tradespeople and funded by the Sisters of Mercy and Seville Mercy Conference Centre.

Dedicated daily Indigenous tours are now also being offered on the sacred site through the rainforest as part of the ongoing business venture between Seville and Minjil. This will provide tourists with a truly traditional indigenous cultural experience only 10 minutes from the CBD, complete with smoking ceremony, traditional rainforest flora and fauna education and fishing demonstrations. Abrand new indigenous tourism product is now available with Great Adventures. The Gunggandji and Yidinji Traditional Owners have commenced Wunyami Cultural Walking Tours, providing an authentic indigenous experience for visitors to Green Island.

onCulturalWunyamiToursGreenIsland

Quicksilver Group Managing Director Tony Baker said, “The Wunyami Cultural Walking Tour is 100% indigenous owned and operated. It’s a wonderful addition to the island experience bringing traditional stories to life and a whole new perspective to the cultural history.”

Wunyami, which means “Place of Spirits” is Green Island’s original name. The tour, designed for small groups, is very engaging and interactive, providing a fascinating insight for children and adults alike. Participants learn about traditional food and medicinal uses of the rainforest plants, participate in traditional fire lighting techniques and can learn about cultural importance of clay painting.

The Wunyami Cultural Walking Tour will be available daily and takes approximately 1 hour. Tours can be pre-booked with Great Adventures Reef and Green Island Cruises or from the Black Seahorse gift shop on the island.

Elder Garth Murgha (Muka) said, “Our guides explain how the island is connected to an ancient journey of two ancestorial story-time beings who fought and formed the island and who still protect it today. This story is shared by the GuruGulu Gunggandji people (Yarrabah) and the Gimuy Yidinji people (Cairns). Our guides tell of the relationship of these warriors and the connectivity of this iconic island to the ancient seascape.”

The new business venture also includes the Black Seahorse gift shop which has opened in Green Island Resort’s day visitor area, selling a range of authentic indigenous artworks and merchandise. The shop draws its name from the Black Seahorse, a known lucky charm for the saltwater women of the Great Barrier Reef in memory of Alma Fourmile (nee Patterson Katchewan).

The 11 regional winners will progress to the State Final on September 17 in Brisbane.

You can be your own boss for just $100 a week, thanks to a revolution of the franchising industry by James Home Services Australia, which is considered the ‘Netflix of franchising’.

HomeLife COVER STORY

“Franchising has always enabled people who otherwise might struggle to start their own business to do just that, leveraging an established brand and processes to mitigate risk and reduce costs,” Ms Simcocks said. “But with rates rising, it’s getting more expensive to take out a loan to buy into a franchise, and less and less people have the cash in hand to purchase their business upfront, so we knew we had to rethink our offering to continue making business ownership a possibility for Australians. “Franchising is a critical pillar of our Australian economy, facilitating 98,000 businesses and contributing over $184 billion annually.

Home Services’ CEO Rhiannon Simcocks said franchising was an enabler for people to enter into business ownership but needed a revamp to achieve that in the current economic climate.

HomeLife 4 Magazine

“It’s essential that we continue to make franchising an accessible option for those wanting to start a business.”

The new subscription model offered by James Home Services is the most significant announcement made during the business’ 30-year history, and the company is confident in its success due to the increasing demand they have experienced both from customers and potential “Withfranchisees.thevolume of enquiries ever increasing, we had to find a way to make it easier for people to get into the industry and own their own business to harness this demand,” Ms Simcocks said. “For many, it will take one look at what they spend on liabilities like their car payments or their entertainment subscriptions to realise the very realistic opportunity we’re presenting to them to be a business owner for as little as $100 a week.”

“IT’S ESSENTIAL THAT WE CONTINUE TO OPTION FOR THOSE WANTING TO START A BUSINESS.”

MAKE FRANCHISING AN ACCESSIBLE

The leading home service franchise has launched a new subscription model, the only one of its kind in Australia, to lower barriers of entry to business ownership and give Australians an opportunity to make business ownership a reality with subscriptions starting from just $100 a Jamesweek.

Fast track to small ownershipbusiness JAMES HOME SERVICES

The new subscription model, which offers training, marketing, support, backup and coaching, will first be available for those wanting to launch an Interior Cleaning business with James Home Services with the goal of making this model available across the entire James Home Services suite of services by the end of 2022.

For further information on the new franchising model

Backed by 30 years of industry experience, James Home Services works with clients throughout Australia to clean, garden and provide other home services. James Home Services is a franchising business providing thorough, efficient and professional home services with a personal touch that can only come from being local.

HomeLife 5 Magazine

Standard franchising fees apply which are calculated as a percentage rate of the individual franchise turnover, and there is a $1,000 upfront investment. At the end of the five-year period the business owner will fully own a James Home Services franchise and subscription payments will cease.

HomeLife COVER STORY

For franchisees that may not have all the necessary equipment to begin with, James Home Services can also offer franchisees equipment for just an extra $25 per week to their subscription fee through the new subscription model.

The established James Home Services business is renowned for cleaning, gardening and other home services throughout Australia and particularly along the east coast.

Currently a James Home Services Interior Cleaning franchise costs $26,600 to buy, but the subscription model cuts that price into manageable payments of less than half a per cent each week.

Stock levels are still at an all-time low, so buyers at the moment are starting to become a lot more flexible with the prerequisite attributes they are looking for and even the areas they are looking in at the moment, but it does depend on whether they are an investor or owner occupier. The main thing all buyers in the marketplace are looking for is security – they want to make sure they’re not buying at the top of the market and in a really volatile market that’s going to chop and change quite quickly. Because Cairns is quite a buoyant market that hasn’t seen the peaks and troughs the metropolitan areas have had over the years, the market here offers buyers that security, and we are seeing that with the growth and confidence in regional areas currently. Selecting the right agent is key to maximising your returns when selling your property. A professional real estate agent is not only a skilled negotiator but also a professional marketer, and it’s important that you get an agent who is skilled across all suburbs of Cairns because, with stock levels being at a record low, buyers will be looking at other Peopleoptions.have been nervous about the interest rate rises, but the benefit to our area is that even with interest rate increases Cairns is still super affordable compared to metropolitan areas. The interest rate rises will tighten the upper end of the market, with home repayments on $1.5 million homes blowing out, which is a real benefit to the more affordable homes from the $500,000 to $1 million bracket. Cairns is still super affordable, but with the cost to build increasing with material price hikes, the already established homes are starting to get a lot more attention in the marketplace. We don’t expect prices in the Cairns market to change much though even with the interest rate increases we’re pretty safe here. We are still seeing a lot of southern interest looking at Cairns, with one in three properties selling here at RE/MAX Real Estate to a southern buyer. We’re finding that there’s a lot more flexibility with working from home, and people are looking to move north at record levels. And I mean let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to live in Cairns? info

With many people considering selling their homes at the moment, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you prepare to maximise your sale price and secure a sale sooner rather than later. Buyers are looking for a home that is low maintenance, and they want to be able to visualise themselves and their family living there, so making sure the property is tidy, the gardens are well maintained and the house is depersonalised is key. You don’t need to go to the extremes of staging a home, it can just be the little things that count such as putting out some fresh flowers and nice cushions on the couch. Your agent will make sure before they show a property, either by a private viewing or an open home, that the place presents well and most importantly of all in the tropics, that it’s cool.

**Keep an eye out for caterpillars who may like to nibble on your fresh leaves. Treat by removing them by hand, or choose an organic treatment such as Dipel to keep them from destroying your crops. Prepare your patch for a crop of sweetcorn! Choose a 1m x 1m sunny patch in your garden, with room for at least 20 plants. Sowing corn in a block allows plants to crosspollinate between themselves, producing larger, fuller cobs of delicious, juicy corn.

It is an exciting time of year in the garden as we watch our edible gardens thrive, and begin to enjoy fresh harvests. It is also a great time to continue to prepare and plant for the coming seasons.

• Ensure there is plenty of air flow around your roses to allow them to thrive and minimise fungal problems.

For best growing:

Kitchen Garden Keep on planting! The weather is perfect for some of our cooler climate favourites, and there’s still plenty more of the season to enjoy fresh produce from your Plantgarden.seasonal veg such as Kale, Cabbage, Spinach, Broccoli, Radish, Zucchini, Capsicum, Tomatoes and Carrots to ensure plenty of variety in your kitchen.

A handy garden tip – Protect your newly planted seedlings from pests with a trusty toilet roll. Pests such as grubs and cutworms will often chew on young seedlings, chopping them at the base of the plant and destroying newly planted crops. Placing a toilet roll over your seedling and pressing it gently into the surface of the soil creates a barrier to protect tender stems, while still letting your seedling access sun and water, and will decompose as your plant grows and no longer needs protection.

Fruit Trees Add to your backyard orchard with some great lunchbox fruits. Planting a Mandarin, Orange or Banana will give you plenty of choice for a tasty addition to your school or work lunches. Now is a good time to prepare and plant your tree, and allow it to acclimatise to its new home before our hot season begins. Roses Roses are beginning to feature in our store and now is the time to get them established. Here in the tropics, roses are a great plant grown in pots as a sunny patio or garden feature, and will also perform well in a sunny, well drained position in your garden.

• Prepare your garden soil by digging ActivGrow into the top 20cm. One bag per 2-3m2 will help boost your soil and get your roses off to a great start.

Corn is a hungry plant, so boost your soil with a combination of ActivGrow and Searles 5 in 1, and allow to settle for one week. Sow seeds directly into your garden, 20-30cm apart and about 5cm deep. Plant two per hole and water in well. Seeds should germinate in 5-7 days, and once they have reached about 5cm in height, thin out the weaker seedling from each hole, taking care not to disturb the remaining Waterseedling.2-3 times per week until the plants are established, then ease off to a good weekly soak. As the plants grow, build up their growing area with compost and add a layer of mulch to encourage stronger roots and growth. As the plants come into flower, give them a gentle shake to help with pollination. Cobs are ready for harvest when the silks begin to turn brown.

First published as Polite Anarchy under the pseudonym of Jack Murray. Polite Anarchy is a story about greed. It is a story about how everything Australians hold dear about their country has been sold to the highest bidder and left ordinary Australians desperate and penniless. It is about greed, power, money and revenge the unholy alliance between banks and Government. Polite Anarchy paints a fictional but factual picture of how incredibly fragile all our lives have become and how one person could bring down an entire country by simply tapping into our innermost fears. The story is based on the fact that we have allowed our political and financial systems to become so finely balanced that it would take almost nothing to cause their collapse. It also highlights the growing divide between city and country and the dangers that poses to our future. At its core, the book is the anatomy of a disaster, where a series of seemingly innocent events that would be meaningless on their own, combine to create the complete collapse of our financial system. The story highlights the level of distrust we harbour about our governments and business leaders and the underlying fear that creates. It tells the story of what really goes on behind the closed doors of government, the seedy underbelly of financial markets and the harshness of the Australian outback. Polite Anarchy is a fiction. But it could become real any day now.

POLITE ANARCHY BY CORNISHMURRAY

This nice’themesexploresguidebookthekeyof‘beingandhowwe can achieve this often overlooked accolade.

VICTORY BY PETER ERRINGTONANDONSELENVANWAYNE

Most books that want to change us seek to make us richer or thinner. This book wants to help us to be nicer, that is: less irritable, more patient, readier to listen, warmer, less prickly... Niceness may not have the immediate allure of money or fame, but it is a hugely important quality nevertheless and one that we neglect at our peril.

The inside story of Labor’s return to power. Anthony Albanese’s 2022 election victory was the most consequential in decades. As well as ending a ‘lost decade’ of conservative rule and bringing Labor into Federal power for the first time since 2013, it ushered in a new force in politics. The victory of the teal independents has changed both the face of the parliament and decimated the Liberal Party. Women candidates and voters had their voices heard across the political spectrum. Victory for Labor has been resounding and sweet, but it comes with caveats. Both major parties now have to look over their shoulders at the minor parties and independent challengers, and the new voices in parliament will have to be heeded by the new Labor government. Yet the next three years are full of possibility. Victory goes inside the campaigns of all the players in the 2022 election to reveal how Labor orchestrated its fifth ever election victory. Will Albanese govern as the careful reformer of the campaign or will this socially progressive leader recapture Australia’s lost egalitarianism?

This is a guidebook to the uncharted landscape of Niceness, gently leading us around the key themes of this forgotten quality. We learn how to be charitable, how to forgive, how to be natural and how to reassure. We learn that niceness is compatible with strength and is no indicator of naivety. Niceness deserves to be rediscovered as one of the highest of all human achievements.

ON BEING NICE BY THE SCHOOL OF LIFE

Deeply researched and written with his trademark wit, common sense and accessibility, Norman brings together what’s known, not known, hopeful but not harmful and harmful and not hopeful, summarised with quick takeaway messages backed up by the science and evidence. No matter what your age, So You Want to Live Younger Longer? gives you the information you need to make your own choices without wasting your time and money or even missing a nice dinner because you might be on a diet that is getting you nowhere. Norman disentangles our ‘Book of Life’ the genes we’re born with and what we subject them to later on and shows that in the search for youth, genes matter much less than you’d think for most of us. In other words, we can overwrite our personal Book of Life and Norman’s book will help you do it. We can live younger, longer at any age we’ve just got to know what to do.

People think when you want to change your life, you need to think big. But world-renowned habits expert James Clear has discovered another way. He knows that real change comes from the compound effect of hundreds of small decisions – doing two push-ups a day, waking up five minutes early, or holding a single short phone call. He calls them atomic habits. In this ground-breaking book, Clear reveals exactly how these minuscule changes can grow into such life-altering outcomes. He uncovers a handful of simple life hacks (the forgotten art of Habit Stacking, the unexpected power of the Two Minute Rule, or the trick to entering the Goldilocks Zone), and delves into cutting-edge psychology and neuroscience to explain why they matter. Along the way, he tells inspiring stories of Olympic gold medallists, leading CEOs, and distinguished scientists who have used the science of tiny habits to stay productive, motivated, and happy. These small changes will have a revolutionary effect on your career, your relationships, and your life.

The dilemma is, which of the pills, mental and physical exercise programs, diets and superfoods actually work? Some of them do help to keep us young, healthy and living longer, others may work when the researchers get the potions right and some are a downright waste of money. So how do you know what and who to trust? That’s the journey that Dr Norman Swan is going to take you on in So You Want to Live Younger Longer?
