Modern THE

WEDDING

vs the more

Traditional AFFAIR

When it comes to weddings, couples today have the freedom to create whatever their hearts’ desire. While there may be some elements of tradition that still exist, such as the throwing of the bouquet and garter, speeches, and cutting of the cake for example, for many, the day is a reflection of who the bride and groom are as a couple, and how they want to portray that to their guests.

THE PROPOSAL In previous generations it was considered a requirement for the groom to first ask the father for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Today, the practice is considered an antiquated, and perhaps sexist gesture. For those men who do approach the parents first, it is more as a mark of respect rather than seeking permission.

Today, many couples opt for a civil service at a location of their choosing, often at the same venue as the reception. For couples who do want a church wedding, many denominations now offer the flexibility to personalise the service, with the bride and groom writing their own vows and having input into the order of the service.

When it comes to the actual proposal, grooms-to-be today are more inventive in popping the question compared to the staid proposals of generations past. From balloons and billboards to flash-mobs and You-tube, they are limited only by their budget and creativity.

THE RECEPTION The cost of the wedding reception was traditionally covered by the bride’s family. With this came the expectation that the parents of the bride would have a significant input into the arrangement of the event.

THE CEREMONY The traditional wedding usually involved a church ceremony, complete with full religious mass. Those that wanted a civil service had to attend the local registry office.

Today, many couples choose to fund their own weddings. While in the past the reception usually involved a formal sit down meal, these days it can be anything from cocktail style with canapés on the deck, to a picnic in a vineyard or a barbe-que on the beach.

CityLife 9 Magazine

When it comes to the wedding cake, the structural masterpieces of multiple tiers, pillars, layers, flower sprays, fruit cake and copious amounts of marzipan are a thing of the past. More bespoke and refined creations reflecting the couples personal tastes are offered. No longer is the bride required to change into a “going away suit”, or the wedding car to be decorated in tin cans and a “Just Married’ sign. These days, couples rarely leave their reception before their guests. There is one tradition however that has stood the test of time. While the stoic bridal “waltz” may have given way to a more romantic and emotional dance to the couple’s “song”, or even a choreographed extravaganza from the whole bridal party, the first dance as a married couple is still a poignant moment for newlyweds.

TIPS TO CHOOSING YOUR

Wedding Venue THE NITTY GRITTY BITS Check whether your venue has public liability insurance. It’s a pretty worrying sign if they haven’t. Read the Terms and Conditions fully to make sure you know what would happen in the event that your wedding has to be cancelled in unforeseen circumstances (Act of God, fire, safety issues and so on). Would they offer you a refund? Many places will have a noise limit which your band or DJ will have to adhere to. If your venue has limiters in place, they will automatically cut off anything that goes above this decibel level and there’s nothing worse than having the plug pulled when everyone’s on the dance floor! THE FUN BITS Before you decide to wow your guests, make sure fireworks are allowed. Some places may be fine with professional displays; others will require a special permit (possibly from the council, which you will be responsible for obtaining, not them). If you dream of making a grand entrance in a James Bond chopper, you’ll need to make sure that your venue has permission and facilities for helicopter landings. Bouncy castles, ice cream vans and street food stalls are all brilliant additions to a wedding, but you’ll have to check that your venue allow them before you book. THE PRETTY BIT What’s the candle policy? Are naked flames allowed? Who’s responsible for lighting and/or maintaining candles throughout the day? Does the venue supply candles or do you need to source them yourselves? How will the décor, colours and statement pieces

in your venue affect the style of your wedding? You might also want to check if there will be any extant flower arrangements or decorations, particularly for Christmas weddings. Think about the light that is available throughout your venue. Natural light is a photographer’s best friend, so they will want to know if there are any really dark rooms. Check what lighting is in place in each room – overhead, moveable lamps, chandeliers – and whether any of it is on a dimmer switch. If the lighting is harsh, unflattering or vaguely coloured, you might want to hire some better lighting. Chairs and chair covers can become an allconsuming issue for some brides. Have a look at the chairs your venue offer – if they’re hideous, do you need to hire in something different? Build a picture in your mind of what photographic locations are available. Beautiful gardens are useless if there’s a monsoon; gorgeous opulent rooms are troublesome if they’re badly lit. Make sure there are lots of different options you can use. THE LOGISTICAL STUFF Make sure someone knows where guests will congregate as they arrive and guide them through to your ceremony. Venues come in all shapes and sizes and whilst wedding ceremonies are rather generically set out with all chairs facing the front, think about what the space is like and how the seats will be positioned. Will every guest have a good view or are there obstructive pillars in the way? One of the biggest things brides worry about is their entrance and making sure they’re not seen by anyone when they arrive. This is particularly important if

C i t y L i f e 16 M a g a z i n e

you’re getting ready offsite, as you’ll need to know which entrance to pull up to and who will be meeting you. Don’t forget that room capacities include everyone in your ceremony, not just your guests. Make sure there is room (both numerically and physically) for your photographer, videographer and musicians. If your venue offer you a package, check whether things like table name holders, table plan easels, a cake stands and knife, are part of the price. Make sure you know what the turnaround times are likely to be if the same room is being used for ceremony, wedding breakfast and reception. If you want to move furniture around, be clear about who is responsible for moving it and whether there’s space to store spare items you don’t want to use.So that there is no confusion at the most critical moment, make sure you know where you will both be meeting the registrar before you’re ceremony. Don’t be afraid to ask whether there’s a room that just you, as bride and groom, can use throughout the day. You might want a quiet five minutes together to catch your breath! I found that even when I went to the loo on our wedding day, I could never have time to myself as everyone wants to talk to you. Similarly, a designated bridal dressing room is a good idea. Make sure you know your venue’s policy on younger guests and consider having a separate crèche area for children. A quieter crèche area for older guests to get away from the noise of a band or DJ isn’t a bad idea either! If your venue offers a place to store wedding presents, check whether it will be secure and whether they are insured for any loss or damage.

Lend a certain unpredictab ility to any and all occasions, and weddings are no exception!

Every couple wants their wedding ceremony to run smoothly, from the dress rehearsal to their vows, so it makes sense to think ahead and be prepared. Most couples have relatives and friends with children, or maybe even children of their own. Sometimes these little ones become flower girls and ring bearers, making a charming addition to the wedding party. Here are some tips for keeping them on track! Spend time with them A child loves to be the centre of attention, but today is not the day. In order to make them feel special, take a few pictures with them. Tell them how cute they look. Give them a special gift just as you would the rest of your wedding party. Ensure they are fed When little ones get hungry they can become irritable. To avoid this, provide them with snacks before and after the ceremony. Choose snacks that will not make a mess or stain clothing, such as cheese and crackers. Avoid sugary treats. Package the snacks in coordinating bags, embellished with ribbons and personal name tags, and be sure to include small bottles of water to keep them hydrated. During the ceremony As children often drop or lose things, it is common to attach fake rings to the pillow for the ring bearer to carry, and give the real rings to the best man and maid of honor. Let the flower girl and ring bearer sit with a parent or relative in the front row during the ceremony and rejoin the wedding party during the processional. Also make sure that the child’s parent or another family member is ready to scoop them up in the case of a tantrum. Afterwards Children can become confused after the ceremony. With all the attention on the bride and groom, they can be unsure as to what to do next. Give them a hug, thank them, and let them know that you will see them later if you have decided that the reception is a child-free event. If they are coming, promise to save them a dance!

CREATING MOMENTS THAT MAKE YOU SMILE! MARRIAGE CEREMONIES | SAME SEX CEREMONIES | BABY NAMING CEREMONIES | VOW RENE WALS

That is one of the phrases new Cairns based Civil Celebrant, Tammy Barker says best describes her business. Tammy loves, LOVE and believes in commitment, which combined with her charismatic, caring personality and her professional manner will no doubt gain the respect of clients in Tropical Nor th Queensland.

“My business ‘Creating Moments’ began when my enjoyment for engaging with crowds and sharing memorable moments collided. I’ve known for about 10years that I wanted to secure my Celebrant license, but life and other career goals got in my way until 2016 when I began my studies. Since qualifying in 2017, it’s been fun officiating weddings, and I’m excited about all the bookings I have in 2018. As a Civil Celebrant, it’s an honour to help create those moments couples have envisioned for their special day!” So to all you newly engaged couples looking for a fresh, young Civil Celebrant or those of you who feel like saying “I Do” once again, Tammy Barker may be the perfect person to assist you in ‘Creating Moments’ that will last a lifetime!
