RIGHT ON TARGET FOR 2020 Report from Tourism Tropical North Queensland

T

ropical North Queensland’s visitor economy is the strongest it has been for many years bringing with it incredible opportunities for astute investors wanting to make their mark in tourism. Significant capital investment is well underway with the welcome addition of cranes to our skyline, while the number of entrepreneurs flying into Cairns looking to add to their portfolios continues to grow.

Our region has enjoyed very strong performances in both the international and domestic tourism markets and we are well and truly on track to achieve the Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) 2020 visitor expenditure stretch target of $4.2 billion after exceeding the 2015 targets set for our international and domestic markets.

continued...

The growth in domestic and international visitors to Tropical North Queensland has outstripped that of both Queensland and Australia for 2015-16 taking total visitors to 2.86 million and expenditure to $3.365 billion. This result augurs well for Tropical North Queensland’s economic future, but should we be cautious about the bubble bursting? TTNQ has carefully looked at the risks associated with a tourism economy in a regional area and created strategies to minimise these. The greatest prospect for growth lies with the Chinese market where the current number of people travelling overseas is expected to double to 220 million by 2025. Direct international aviation services are key to tapping into that potential growth, however, our small population base is a deterrent to airlines catering primarily to multi-destination visitors to Australia. To ensure the planes are full coming to and from Cairns we propose a campaign to position the region as Australia’s Tropical Holiday Resort Destination – a one-stop holiday for the Chinese. Research shows the rapidly growing number of independent travellers from China prefer to visit just one destination rather than travelling around multiple cities in Australia. These savvy travellers travel to destinations like Hawaii, Fiji, Maldives and Bali. Positioning Tropical North Queensland as Australia’s Tropical Holiday Resort Destination will add a new reason for Chinese to travel to Australia, capturing significant demand that the country is currently not appealing to. We are seeing numbers increase in the region’s traditional markets of the United Kingdom, Europe and North America and it is especially pleasing to see figures from Japan on a strong upward trend. The domestic market remains our largest, and concerted campaigns in recent years plus the devaluation of the Australian dollar have established Tropical North Queensland as a preferred highly aspirational tropical holiday destination for Australians who previously looked overseas for these getaways. TTNQ’s focus on bringing new events to the region is paying dividends with tourism now a year-round industry. Events give visitors a reason to come to a destination no matter what the weather, time of year or the exchange rate. They also assist with marketing the destination to a broader audience. Ironman Asia-Pacific was a welcome boost to The Cairns Airport Adventure Festival bringing an extra 50,000 visitor nights to the region and invaluable international publicity. The Asian

Continental Beach Volleyball Cup, which was a qualifier for the Rio Olympics, also was held in Cairns in June adding to the destination’s profile for international sporting events. Of course, with success comes supply management issues and as our destination’s visitor numbers increased so too did our attention on encouraging the right type of investment in tourism infrastructure. TTNQ does robust forecasting on an annual basis to ensure our members and potential investors have a thorough understanding of what the region needs. Infrastructure underway in the region including the Cairns Aquarium, Nova City and the five -star redevelopment of the Tradewinds Esplanade are examples of valuable strategic investment to sustain strong future growth.

Our dual World Heritage areas of the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest remain our greatest drawcards, however, we are yet to capitalise fully on an additional, highly compelling destination experience asset. Indigenous tourism is becoming increasingly important for sophisticated travellers who want to deepen their connection with the world, so TTNQ is working to position Tropical North Queensland as Australia’s best place to experience authentic Indigenous culture. We have a mix of authentic experiences where travellers can interact with Indigenous people and learn more about their culture, plus we are the only destination with two distinct Indigenous cultures, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Lastly, our tourism industry is involved with a global social movement that I hope you will all join, Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef. Citizens offers every person around the world the opportunity to play a role in looking after this extraordinary World Heritage area through the website www.citizensgbr.org. LEARN / PRESERVE / ENJOY – it’s fun, it’s free and it’s meaningful. Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef will be launched in April 2017 further turning world-wide attention on our piece of paradise.

CRANES IN THE AIR OVER CAIRNS

I

Report from Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsh MP

t’s terrific to have this opportunity to wish Cairns locals a happy New Year as we start 2017 with a bang. I have to say, every time I drive past the Cairns CBD I’m thrilled to see the two cranes on the skyline with the Cairns Aquarium and C-PAC progressing well. It’s also welcome news that international investors will be expanding their portfolios with new 5* hotel offerings.

From a federal perspective, I’m feeling confident about 2017 being a year of implementation as we encourage investment, create jobs and promote growth in our wonderful city. At the time of writing, the Local Planning Committee is being appointed for the $20m Jobs and Investment Package. Committee members have a wealth of local knowledge, and businesses will be able to apply for funding in coming months once the Committee finalises our local investment priorities. The Cairns-based Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) is hard at work assessing projects which are seeking concessional finance to drive major new infrastructure. Given one of the criteria is that projects either won’t happen without this finance, or only at a greatly-reduced scope, I urge the Queensland Government to put forward the dredging of Trinity Inlet for consideration. Late last year, we saw the first 2016 election commitment delivered with the launch of the new Crown of Thorns Starfish control vessel. Many other project proponents are in the final stages of signing funding agreements so I’m looking forward to more good news in the near future. These include some exciting promotional and conservation activities for the Great Barrier Reef and new sporting, health, water and mobile phone infrastructure, as well as tackling Yellow Crazy Ants and expand-

ing the Cairns Marine Precinct to position Cairns as a national maritime sustainment and maintenance hub. The ACCC’s deep-dive investigation into the Cairns fuel market is due around April. I hope it will highlight reasons why local motorists are being ripped off at the bowser, and give government and consumers opportunities to take things further. I’m also continuing to put pressure on the Government as it considers the Northern Australia Insurance Premiums Taskforce report, and pushing for a Banking Tribunal that will help local victims of bank ‘bastardry’ to get redress and compensation. Social issues that remain high on my agenda are improving aged care and mental health services, promoting the arts, tackling the tuberculosis scourge that is impacting residents of Leichhardt and very importantly, youth unemployment. We have a number of new initiatives to help get our young people off welfare and into work so stay tuned. Further afield, I’m amazed to see the progress of works on the Peninsula Development Road. When the next two sections are completed in early 2017, more than half of the PDR will be sealed. What a milestone, there’s nothing I’d like more than to see the PDR fully sealed in my lifetime! Also to the north, I’ll be working closely with our Energy Minister on a solution for the Daintree Coast’s electricity struggles, and with the Port Douglas community as NBN construction starts in February. So it’s going to be a busy year, but as always, if you have a federal issue that you need assistance with, please feel free to contact my office.

ACHIEVING LIFT OFF

T

Report from the desk of Bill Cummings

he more favourable underlying economic conditions reported in last year’s publication have been working their way through the economy towards achieving a “lift off ” to stronger growth. Over the ten years 2005 to 2015, despite a setback to tourism growth caused by an extremely high Australian dollar, the Cairns/Tropical North region continued to lead growth in population in regional Queensland and across northern Australia. The region’s economy is much more diversified than many people recognise. Over the decade, the region’s large agricultural sector continued its long term real underlying growth rate of about 2% per annum with a total real growth excluding inflation and including post farm gate activity, of over $300m or 22%. While much more erratic, mining in the region has shown a “real” growth in value of production of over 5% per annum, totalling over the 10 years about $270m or 69%, especially under the influence of expanding bauxite production at Weipa. During this period, thanks to efforts through the Chamber of Commerce, the city aggressively sought to develop FIFO opportunities that at peak were estimated to be contributing up to about $200m a year to the economy. Also rapid growth of the city and region during the 80s and 90s had not been matched by growth in some government services. In a ‘catch up’ situation, health employment grew by 36% between 2006 and 2011. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Services’ turnover indicates growth has continued in more recent years - 26% up in the past three years. A “catch up’ has also been taking place in higher education also. Against this background of resilience and continuing growth, we can look forward with some confidence. Under the influence of a lower dollar, the region’s tourism earnings have rocketed back up over the past few years, pumping something like $700m a year extra into the economy. In real terms, tourism earnings have now passed the previous peak levels of 2006 and are recording new records well over $3bn a year. With exchange rates remaining lower, new air services coming into place and investment starting to roll in appropriate facilities, prospects are excellent for continuing growth.

The situation is not dissimilar to the late 80s when a lower dollar combined with a major new market developing to underpin rapid growth (Japan then, now China). Important in the returning international market has been new air services to Bali, Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong, Auckland and now Seoul. I believe TTNQ is confident that with State Government support, direct all-year round air services will be achieved to mainland China by the middle of next year. However the most real growth has been in domestic tourism where best discount fares continue to be low. The region is also continuing to tap into non-core tourism markets. The prospects are excellent for increasing the city’s role in the rapidly growing cruise ship market, super and cruising yachts, conferences, cultural events and sports tourism. However as in the past, it is not just about tourism. There are few regions around Australia that offer better prospects for agricultural expansion. The region accounts for 26% of Australia’s water run off. Banana production remains high. Sugar prices have bounced back up due to a shortfall in global production. Acreages have expanded, especially in the Tableland’s area. Cattle prices are riding high and expected to go higher with a potentially massive new markets opening up in China. Tableland’s agricultural production data indicates the degree to which production has been continuing to grow and diversify. Under current government programs and private enterprise proposals, there are six major initiatives and studies taking place that if implemented, would underpin a very large increase in agricultural production in the region over the next twenty years. The picture in mining is mixed. Some existing mines have been scaled back or closed operation due to low prices. There has been FIFO losses to mines in the North West Queensland region. However, we are still holding on to FIFO to Moranbah, Groote and others. There has been a tailing off of growth in PNG but we still have shipping services to the Freeport McMoRan mine in Indonesia. A $36m contract (construction workforce 350) has just been let at Mungana to complete the processing plant and recommence production. Estimated ongoing workforce is 230. Magnetite is now being exported out of Mourilyan. Major contracts for the $2bn development of the Amrun project at Weipa have been let.

Y E A R B O O K

2 0 1 7

Failure to secure the Pacific Patrol Boats’ contract was a blow to the resurgence of shipbuilding in the region. The $24m assistance from the Commonwealth government for upgrade of slipway facilities will help the sector‘s competitive position and hopefully the sector, including the Maritime College, will achieve much of the ongoing servicing work for the Patrol Boats contract. With improved global financial conditions and a lower dollar, super yacht business is coming back and increased reef fleet activity will assist. Amalgamation of Toll Marine fleet with Cairns based Sea Swift operations will further consolidate Cairns’ important role as a base for coastal shipping that supports development across the Far North. The aviation servicing cluster is continuing to operate soundly and new market opportunities, including for training, appear to be opening up in Asia. However unfortunately, governments (especially the State Government), have not been playing their role in a regional upsurge. The State Government budgeted capital expenditure in the Cairns and immediate region is continuing to be low in per capita terms. For 2016-17, it is 49% down on five years ago recording the largest decrease among Queensland regions. By contrast, local government capital expenditure has risen to record levels. A new era of increased construction activity is shaping up as burgeoning tourism numbers indicate a need for additional tourism and community infrastructure. Cranes are now back on the Cairns skyline with the construction underway of the Cairns Aquarium and the Cairns Performing Arts Centre. With projects moving ahead for accommodation and residential development of Nova 8, Tradewinds Esplanade and the site adjacent to the Cairns Library, a continuation of “cranes on the skyline” looks assured. Refurbishments at Port Douglas are being added to by expansion projects like the Port Douglas Reef Marina. Although the giant $2bn Aquis project aimed especially at attracting an expanding market out of China has remained elusive, at Kuranda, the $600m KURWorld project has started its Environmental Impact Studies phase.

Further afield in the region, the $240m sealing of the Peninsula Road is underway and government funding pledged to complete the sealing of the Hann Highway, the last link to achieve a direct sealed inland link to Melbourne and Adelaide markets. A range of solar and wind projects are underway around the region. In the background, the $5bn Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund has now established an office in Cairns and is moving towards providing a boost to projects. The Cairns Region’s Growing Role in Australia’s Agricultural Industries New figures on the value of agricultural production on the Tablelands in 2015 illustrate the degree to which the region’s agricultural sector has been continuing to grow and diversify. The Cairns/Tropical North Queensland region leads as northern Australia’s largest agricultural producer, especially in crops, recording a value including processing and transport elements of the order of $2bn per annum. Traditional major crops of sugar and beef have been increasingly supplemented in recent years by other crops and especially tropical fruits and especially bananas. The Cairns/Tropical Coast and Tablelands is now Australia’s third largest fruit producing region. Star performers in diversification has been the Tablelands region that now records thirteen different agricultural sectors with a value of production over $10m a year with a total value recorded in 2015 of $552m. This total is up about 60% on ten years ago (from about $340m), representing a growth of 4.8% per annum and 2.4% per annum in real terms, discounting for inflation. Crops that have particularly emerged over the past ten years on the Tablelands have included bananas and avocadoes with latest values of $94m and $79m respectively. In addition to expansion on the Tablelands, fruit production has now spread north to the Lakeland Cooktown district where crops are now worth about $40m per annum adding to cattle industry output in the Peninsula of about $50m.

James Cook University’s Cairns Campus is continuing to grow, with major research and infrastructure developments underway for the 2017 year providing a big boost to the Cairns economy. Demand for student places for many of the 200 courses at the Cairns Campus for the 2017 academic year is up, with applications received from across the region, interstate andoverseas. One of the big student attractors is a new Engineering degree, launched in Cairns in 2016. The degree focusses on Electronic Systems and the Internet of Things, combining Electronic Engineering with Internet technologies, wireless communications, sensor devices, industrial design and cloud computing. These are the technologies behind industry disruption and future innovation, including smart cars, smart cities and key aspects of automation. Designed to equip students for the careers of the future, the new Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet of Things degree is the only program of its type in Australia. The growing number of JCU students and researchers interested in entrepreneurship and innovation will soon have access to a facility dedicated to accelerating the translation of research and new business ideas into innovative products and services. The Queensland and Australian governments have each pledged $10 million towards the construction of the Cairns Innovation Centre. It is anticipated that construction of this building will begin during 2017. Research at Cairns Campus is being transformed by a $24.5 million investment in a state-of-the-art facility focussed on Tropical health and medicine. The Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine focusses on northern Australia’s major health security risks, health services to remote communities, and Tropical diseases. The new facilities are due to open late 2017. The University is extending its footprint to the city, with a City Campus due to open in February 2017. The City Campus will allow JCU to expand its teaching and student services in Cairns, and work more closely with business and civic leaders. In a major move for long-term growth, the University is investing in accommodation for 300 students at the main campus in Smithfield at a cost of over $40 million. The seven-storey complex will offer a mix of accommodation including studio apartments with ensuite bathrooms. It is due to open in time for the 2018 academic year. There are plans to expand the accommodation to 1000 beds over the longer term. The new accommodation, research and teaching facilities will ensure that Cairns and James Cook University become an even more attractive destination for international students. Young people across the world will certainly be watching. This September, JCU Cairns Campus and Smithfield Regional Park will be the setting for the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. Over 40,000 people are expected to attend from more than 35 countries. Six million enthusiasts are expected to watch the broadcasts. All of this activity and investment means that 2017 will be a busy year for JCU staff and students. It’s an investment with a promise – a brighter future for our young people, and a strong and resilient economy for our region. Y E A R B O O K

2016 - 2017 PROPERTY REPORT Report from Herron Todd White - Rick Carr 2016 was a fairly lacklustre year for the Cairns property market. Despite improving regional economic conditions, particularly in tourism, the lack of jobs growth and job security in the local economy led to a flat spot in residential property demand and a softening of market confidence during 2016. The level of residential sales activity distinctly cooled and the previous ‘rising market’ eased back to more of a ‘balanced market’. Price levels for houses during 2016 showed little change. House prices ended the year at a median level of $402,500 in December 2016, a minimal increase from the $401,000 that prevailed in December 2015.

The upshot is that even though solid fundamentals are in place with low rental vacancy rates, no obvious oversupply in any market sector and continued improvement in tourism, the Cairns property market is still being hampered by a continued lack of confidence and optimism. Cairns during 2017 is in desperate need to some form of major development commencing to reignite market confidence. Developments such as the Rydges Tradewinds Hotel redevelopment, the new hotel at the corner of Lake and Aplin Streets, and the Nova City development, are the sort of catalyst the Cairns property market needs to overcome the 'announcement fatigue' created by numerous other projects that have not managed to get out the ground over the last few years. If successful they will generate a perception of ‘cranes in the skyline’ and inject much needed confidence into the city.

Unit prices ended the year at a median price level of $221,500 in December 2016, 2.3% below the level prevailing in December 2015. Unit prices also remain typically shy of their 2009 peak-ofthe-market levels due to the ongoing effects of buyer aversion, stemming from increased body corporate fees from heightened strata building insurance costs, as well as tighter lending practices affecting finance to investors.

The performance of the Cairns property market in 2017 will be thereby dependent to a large degree on at least one of these major projects commencing.

Demand for vacant land slowed significantly during 2016 and the price pressures experienced throughout 2014 and early 2015 evaporated during the year. The median vacant land price came in at $206,500 in December 2016, identical to that in December 2015.

If so we can expect to see demand for most residential property types revitalise during 2017. Sales volumes will come back to a slow but steady increase, and flow through to modestly rising prices. Demand for vacant land in particular will rise as new housing construction recovers from the doldrums.

Pressures in the rental market increased during 2016 as a result of lowering rental vacancy rates. The trend rental vacancy rates for December 2016 stood at 1.8% for houses and 2.5% for units, and 2.1% overall. Low rental vacancy rates have resulted in mildly increasing rents, with house and unit rents typically increasing by $5 to $10 per week during 2016.

However if no large projects get out of the ground, 2017 may well be a carbon copy of 2016 with slow but consistent sale rates, tight rental vacancies and a constrained finance environment.

COUNCIL PLAYS A BIG ROLE IN THE HEALTH OF OUR LOCAL ECONOMY

A

Report from the Cairns Regional Council s we head into 2017, Cairns has every reason to be positive about the next 12 months as we start to see some movement in key projects that have the potential to transform our city and drive growth.

I'm extremely proud of what we have achieved. Not only have we created an amazing tropical parkland that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors year round, but an outdoor performance space that, in 18 months’ time, will be complemented by the opening of the new CPAC.

The much-anticipated Cairns Aquarium will open its doors this year, the extensive upgrade by the Ghassan Group to Rydges Tradewinds will start, and Nova City will begin to transform our central business district, giving confidence to others to invest in Cairns.

The other signature project opened this year is the re-developed Tobruk Memorial Pool – a project that had been crying out for action for many years, and now provides this community with a Fina-accredited 50 metre, competition-standard pool in a stateof-the-art complex.

Tourism continues to experience steady growth, and it is pleasing to see increases across a variety of markets – China is now our largest market with 217,000 visitors per annum, having risen by 31% from the previous year. This is followed by the USA, up by 18%, with the third largest being Japan, which is continuing to bounce back with a 17.6% rise over the previous year. Pleasingly, we are experiencing rapid growth in visitors out of India, with a 25.6% rise over the past 12 months.

We achieved what we set out to do last year and much more, and all without placing undue burden upon our ratepayers, as was demonstrated when we brought down a modest 1.5% rise in rates as part of a balanced budget for 2016-17 that also featured a record capital works program of $178.5 million.

Cairns now hosts 34% of all visitors who come to Queensland, and we expect that upward trend to continue this year. Council also looks forward to a productive year, as we continue the construction of the new Cairns Performing Arts Centre, and complete a host of projects across the city that will markedly improve facilities for sport and leisure activities, as well as core infrastructure such as kerb and channelling, road shoulders and footpaths as part of the $6 million Suburban Enhancement Program. Stage 2 of the Shields Street Heart Project and the completion of the School of Arts will complement the works we have done so far to enhance our CBD which is so important to maintain our reputation as an international tourist destination. 2016 was also all about delivery – particularly the realisation of two signature projects which have added to the liveability of our city and the wellbeing of its citizens. The opening of the re-developed Munro Martin Parklands stands out as a highlight for me because this new community space is a key element in our evolving cultural fabric, and furthers our objective to be the arts and cultural capital of the North.

We are acutely aware that Council plays a big role in the health of our local economy, and that supporting local businesses is paramount to help them create jobs and provide a solid foundation for our overall economy. So it was extremely pleasing to read a report prepared late last year that outlined how Council contributes to the economy. The report highlighted that out of the $330 million the organisation spends each year, 91 per cent is spent in the local area through materials, services and employment. Council spent $199 million on locally purchased goods and services, including materials and local contractors for the extensive capital works program. The report shows that 10.8 jobs are created for every $1 million Council spends. In total, it’s estimated that 3244 people were employed in Cairns as a result of Council spending. That’s good news to my ears. This year promises to be a positive and productive one. We can achieve much if we work together as a strong community and keep our focus on making this city the most liveable in Australia.

5 MILLION PASSENGERS IN A YEAR Report from the desk of the CEO - Cairns International Airport

As Australia’s northern gateway to the Asia Pacific region, Cairns Airport plays a vital role in the region’s economic prosperity. Cairns Airport provides connections for holiday, business tourism, resource and industry travellers and freight via an extensive network of direct international and domestic routes. International links include Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, Manila, Bali, Seoul, Auckland and Port Moresby and there are direct domestic services to all the Australian mainland capital cities as well as Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Alice Springs, Uluru, Hamilton Island and Townsville, plus a comprehensive regional network across Tropical North Queensland. In June 2016 Cairns Airport celebrated the milestone of welcoming 5 million passengers in a year. Strong passenger growth has continued in both international and domestic passenger over the past two years, fuelled by the introduction of several new international routes and subsequent frequency increases as well as increases in domestic capacity. Cairns’ proximity to the Asia Pacific region offers excellent opportunities to grow both passenger and freight services. In conjunction with all levels of government and tourism partners, Cairns Airport continues to work to achieve direct flights from mainland China to add to the two services direct from Hong Kong already operated by Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines. These flights are expected to commence later this year, and they will bring with them an excellent opportunity to capitalise on the Chinese visitor markets’ evolution from total group travel toward a stronger mix of free independent travellers (FIT, who boost tourism outcomes by staying

longer, spending more and exploring further. Chinese visitors to Australia are very willing to travel around the country to ensure they include the must-see Great Barrier Reef in their itinerary. Twenty per cent of Chinese visitors arriving into Australia come to Cairns. Ninety-nine per cent of these visitors take a domestic flight to and/or from Cairns, with 81 per cent travelling both ways on domestic flights. With its strong and flexible domestic network, Cairns can benefit from direct flights from mainland China coming into any major centre in Australia. The Tropical North Queensland region abounds in quality fresh produce that is in high demand throughout Asia. Cairns Airport is working with industry to create new export freight opportunities for seafood, meat, dairy, coffee, tea, chocolate, nuts and other horticulture produce. Export development can add significantly to the viability and sustainability of passenger air services. Cathay Pacific offer an excellent example of this, operating their Hong Kong - Cairns flights for almost 25 years, servicing passengers as well as carrying live seafood from Tropical North Queensland direct to Hong Kong. Cairns Airport has a long term development vision and continues to explore options for the development of dedicated aviation and helicopter precincts that will build on the airport’s already strong capacity to facilitate a broad range of aviation and export activity and support services. Cairns Airport is ready to work with existing or new operators to progress airport development in line with market demand and to incorporate innovation and diversity that will ensure a robust future for the region.

KIB GROUP Cyber Attack Insurance The increasing online presence of business has seen a significant spike in cyber attacks. The scary thing is that if a business is not protected by insurance, it can mean the end of their business. While I don’t mean to startle you, the threat is very real. I had a client recently travelling in Asia who suffered a cyber attack and I saw what transpired first hand. A hacker had gained access to his personal emails and had found his email correspondence with me (his financial planner) in his sent items. The hacker sent me an email posing as my client and requesting me to transfer some of his funds into another bank account. Some of the words were spelt incorrectly in the email and the request was an unusual one from the client. I picked up the phone and called while they were overseas to query the email. The email wasn’t from him and it was from a hacker. My client was obviously distressed that

his personal emails had been violated in such a way. We managed to secure his email account and change his passwords on all accounts very quickly to avoid the hacker doing any more damage. Major banks receive similar emails like this from customers. They are not unusual requests from business clients which need to transfer large sums of money.. These attacks can be significant and have the ability to severely impact the business and could even destroy the business. You may have heard about the attacks on The Red Cross, Distribute IT and a medical centre in the Gold Coast. The threat is real and can impact small and large businesses. In 2015, the cyber intelligence agency, the Australian Signals Directorate, said attacks on business and government increased by 20 per cent compared to the previous year, to over 11,000. Cyber insurance is probably the fastest growing insurance in the world and poor cyber security

can cost companies dearly - they risk fines of up to $1.7 million for breaches of privacy alone. What measures do you have in place to cope should a cyber attack occur in your business? Cyber Attack Insurance covers the fines, business shutdown costs and even cyber ransom where hackers blackmail companies so you aren’t left out of pocket during the ordeal. An insurance broker is able to give you the personalised advice that you need to ensure you receive value for money while also guaranteeing you have the right cover. Disclaimer This information may not be appropriate for your individual objectives, financial situation or needs and you should seek advice from a qualified insurance broker before making any insurance decisions. WHY YOU SHOULD CHANGE TO TRINITY ACCOUNTANTS. While most of us would not think twice about changing our brand of toothpaste or even our brand of car, a number of accounting clients find it easier to stay with their current accountant even if they are dissatisfied with the service they are getting.

but this is only a small element of the value proposition a good accountant provides. At the very least business owners today need their accountant to identify areas that require attention within their business and provide solutions. The best accountants are proactively giving useful and timely strategic advice on new opportunities.

Any qualified accountant will do a reasonable job of preparing your annual accounts and tax return,

5 KEY INDICATORS THAT YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR ACCOUNTANT ARE: 1. They are slow in responding to emails or phone calls 2. They are too focused on last year’s accounts rather than future profits 3. They always agree with you and never recommend how to improve things 4. They are not helping you save enough tax 5. They haven’t discussed options about future succession planning / business sale

They also offer a standalone XERO bookkeeping service, XERO conversion and start-up packages to help clients get on with making money in their real business, rather than being bogged down with bookkeeping. Appointing Trinity Accountants will be a positive step in the successful growth of your business. Call them today for a free initial meeting to discuss your business goals, strategic options and accounting and taxation needs.

For that once in a lifetime experience, every time, Nautilus Aviation offers one of the best ways to see the world’s wonders just outside our doorstep! Departing daily, jump on board one of their scheduled flights; design a custom tour of your own or, for the more adventurous, take the controls and fly yourself! The sky is no longer your limit, it’s your playground! Nautilus Aviation began with a single Cessna 208 floatplane in 1993, operating from a historical World War II Hangar at Townsville airport. Its purpose, was to transfer guests above the pristine waters of the Great Barrier Reef to beautiful coastal destinations including the secluded hideaway of Orpheus Island. In 2012 the floatplane was replaced with the company’s first helicopter, signalling the start of one of the largest and most versatile fleets in the northern regions of Australia. Today, after 23 years in the Helicopter Industry and under the leadership of Aaron Finn, Nautilus Aviation has 61 staff and 25 state of the art piston and turbine powered helicopters across its bases in Cairns (Head Office), Darwin, Townsville and Horn Island.

The aircraft are in a family of best-selling helicopters in their class and are unmatched by any other helicopter provider in the locations the company is based. The company’s impressive fleet of 25 diverse helicopters enables them to provide a premium service across all areas of operation – tourism, VIP transfers, aerial, commercial and industry work. The newest addition, the B412EP in particular, enables the company to greater support disaster management agencies in the event of search and rescue operations, cyclones, floods and firefighting. A variety of aircraft, impeccable safety record and partnerships with a number of the region’s top tourism operators, makes it possible for Nautilus Aviation to deliver unrivalled experiences for local families and visitors. In Queensland, tourism experiences include breathtaking scenic flights over the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Rainforest, a gourmet picnic on a secluded sand cay or island, transfers to cruise and dive boats, outback adventures to old mining towns,

To many locals, Nautilus Aviation is known as the company with the “red helicopters”. Nautilus Aviation houses a fleet of luxurious red Airbus helicopters including the H120 seating four passengers, the H125 seating six passengers and the H130 seating 6/7 passengers. These machines are fitted out with leather seats, air conditioning and state-of-the-art safety systems. A stand out feature of the H120 and H130 is the Fenestron

LIVING DYNAMICS PTY LTD The Contract Angels The confusing world of contracts can be overwhelming for any business, but particularly so for those in building and construction. The industry is renowned for disputes over contractual rights and obligations, often leaving small businesses and subcontractors at the mercy of the fine print. Living Dynamics was established to help small to medium enterprise in the construction industry better understand potential risks and opportunities when entering into contracts. In Cairns, Living Dynamics’ ‘Contract Angels’ can also assist these operators when they’ve already committed to a contract. The Contract Angels provide a risk assessment and a detailed strategy on ongoing risk management for the company - and unlike some others, will stay with the company in a mentoring capacity. “We do that for as long as the company wishes or when we feel the company’s internal resources have gained the skill sets necessary to evaluate and manage commercial risk themselves,” says the Contract Angel, Gaye Hickey. The Contract Angels are supported locally and nationally by staff and other Angels who can bring unique skill sets to the client without burdening Living Dynamics FNQ with high overheads, making the service very competitive. Gaye personally brings more than 20 years’ experience as an industry professional in the residential and commercial building sectors. She also brings valuable experience in Contract Administration including administering minor and major works contracts, cash flows, cost reporting, risk management, procurement, programming and ensuring projects are delivered to achieve time, cost and quality objectives. When something goes awry, The Contract Angels also have the resources and experience to assist subcontractors caught in what Gaye calls ‘the trap’, helping to negotiate the best resolution possible. “Typically in close knit communities which experience a boom, an influx of national and international managing contractors arrive. While they often hire staff locally, they expect and demand compliance to their own standards which have over the years de-risked much of their obligation down to the subcontractors,” Gaye explains. “We have dealt with the majority of the nationals and know intimately the expected risks they demand their subcontractors to absorb. The Angels have the tools to assess the likely cost of that risk to the subcontractor and either work with the subcontractor to ensure they have sufficient contingency to cover the risk or negotiate better terms with the nationals.” Living Dynamics believes its ability to offer a flexible and often remote suite of risk management tools is its crowning achievement, based on knowledge and the right application of readily available data rather than complex and expensive software. “Repeat business from our assistance in business improvement programs rather than just risk management is testimony to this.”

Real Living Options Association Inc. is a local family governed organisation that specialises in individualised support to assist people with a disability to have choice and control in their life. The Service was established in 1996 and has been assisting and supporting people with a disability to have a lifestyle of their choice for over 20 years. The Service works collaboratively with people who have a disability and their families/support networks to provide assistance on a one to one basis so that they can have independence, a choice about where they want to live, community participation and access to enjoy social and recreational activities. are prepared for their planning meeting with an NDIA planner. Real Living Options is looking for potential partnerships with other businesses in the Cairns community so that we can assist people who are funded for therapies, equipment and other items such as domestic assistance and home modifications. Under the NDIS people who have a disability will now be funded for more than just support. They will have funding to meet all of their assessed needs which will give them more choice and control in their life. As a support provider we would like to be able to easily refer people to the services that we cannot provide with confidence that they will receive a professional, reliable service. Real Living Options is preparing for growth as the NDIS rolls out in Cairns and more people start to receive funding. If you would like further information please contact our Service Manager by phone or email.

With the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) due to roll out in Cairns from 1 July 2018, Real Living Options Association Inc. is currently working with people who have a disability and their families/support networks to develop detailed plans of their support needs in line with their goals so that they

COLLIER LAWYERS L E G A L

If ever there was a perception that lawyers were unapproachable, Nardine Collier aims to dispel it at her boutique office in Edgehill Village, where she encourages people to pay her a visit and say hello, even if they are not in need of her legal expertise. She will even shout you a coffee or wine next door at NOA.

Although she has over twenty years experience in Family Law and Mediation and Workplace and Employment Law and is currently operating three successful practices, Nardine initially envisaged a different career path. “I wanted to be a musician, but my mother was insistent I do a law degree. On balance she was right, as mothers usually are,” laughs Nardine. Originally from the Northern Territory, the beauty of Tropical North Queensland and the desire to follow her heart saw Nardine expand her practice at the start of the year to now incorporate the Cairns region. Nardine offers legal services in Family Law, Wills, Estates and Conveyancing through her practice Collier Lawyers. She is an accredited Specialist in family Law and holds a masters in Family Law. Via her second business “Cairns Mediations and Arbitration” she works as a nationally accredited Mediator and Family Law Arbitrator. Mediation is the best way forward for people wanting to resolve a dispute without incurring large legal fees. You can settle a matter in a matter of hours with a small fee, instead of it taking years and tens of thousands of dollars.

of experience as a multi-skilled lawyer and mediator to offer assistance to those in business wanting to resolve workplace disputes. “I also do investigations if serious allegations arise, and can help an employer develop sound workplace policies and procedures, and train staff in relation to implementing these policies,” says Nardine. By offering clients flexible payment options that includes fixed price fees and no large up-front payments, and a dedication to solving legal disputes without the need to attend court, Nardine is able to provide an affordable service, particularly in Family law matters. Motivated by her desire to help people resolve their conflict thus enabling them to move on and be happy, Nardine believes that within every argument, people have the ability within themselves to find the solution. I love settling a matter and helping clients get through a difficult time in their lives with dignity and pride,” she says.

It is however in her third practice Workplace Legal Solutions, that Nardine is able to combine her depth

RE/MAX CAIRNS - TONY WILLIAMSON

Real estate expert an unofficial ambassador of Cairns

WORDS BY JANIE BARTON

People who know Tony Williamson, principal of RE/MAX Cairns, know he loves to talk. What they may not realise, however, is that people all over the world are listening. The real estate guru, who has been a guest speaker at recent RE/MAX conventions in Rome, Thailand and Las Vegas, makes it his mission to promote Cairns wherever he goes. “I do everything I can to get Cairns on the radar,” said Tony, who was recently named RE/MAX’s Asian Ambassador. “With my work I get the chance to speak around Australia and the world, and I always sell the virtues, benefits and features of living in this glorious place.” Having Tony as RE/MAX’s Asian Ambassador is a real coup for the City. RE/MAX has 6700 offices in 100 countries and more than 110,000 agents. There are 16 Asian countries where RE/MAX has a presence. “There is a global spotlight on the Asian market right now because they are looking to invest outside of Asia,” he said. “I liaise with those 16 countries and try and get them to invest in Cairns.” While he travels nationally and internationally, attending and speaking at RE/MAX conventions, he is also promoting Cairns when he travels with the Northern Pride Rugby League team, of which he is Chairman, and attending conferences and meetings as a board member of the ECU Credit Union. “If I can get one person to come to Cairns every time I speak

Contact details

then I’ve done my job,” he said. “I’m not looking for people just to come here and buy real estate, I’m looking for people to come to Cairns because if we get more people coming to Cairns it’s better for the economy. When the economy is better, development happens and when there’s development, the positive effects flow on throughout the whole city.’ Tony entered the real estate market when he was in his early 20s and soon became a top agent in his office before taking a break and studying accounting and marketing at James Cook University. He returned in 2010 and opened his own office without any staff. Today he runs one of the most successful real estate companies in Cairns with a team of 26. He is absolutely passionate about promoting Cairns every opportunity he gets. “I just love Cairns,” he said. “I was born here, both my parents were born here and I went to primary and high school here. “I love what the Chamber of Commerce, Advance Cairns and Cairns Regional Council are doing. There are a lot of people who are pushing Cairns forward, not just me. It’s all about moving forward.”

24 HOUR CONNEXION

Professional answering services 24/7 A Cairns firm’s back to basics and against the trends approach with its telephone answering service is proving to be a real winner for tourism companies. Its secret? It uses real people to answer the phone - pronto, 24/7. 24 Hour Connexion is ‘reclaiming the night’ with a concierge-style professional service for tourism businesses throughout Queensland and beyond. Clients include leading tourism operators, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Passions of Paradise, Kuranda Scenic Rail, Tropic Wings, Coral Sea Dreaming, Deep Sea Divers Den, Reef Magic and Blazing Saddles. The firm has been around for a decade but was taken over in April by Independent Aviation and given a new lease of life, with more staff, specialised training and a new phone system.

Contact details

Training included understanding the needs and product of each of the clients, answering calls on dedicated after-hours diversion telephone lines in the name of the particular client called, attending to bookings, answering queries and generally assisting the person calling. 24 Hour Connexion meets the needs of a growing market that requires instant results, locking in booking confirmations at any time, rather than waiting until the following day or trying to manage their own bookings via a website. In one month during peak season, employees took more than 6000 calls, 85% of which were handled in 30 seconds. The peak period is late afternoon when tourists return from a tour and are considering what to do the next day.

320 Sheridan Street, CAIRNS QLD 4870 www.24hourconnexion.com

111 • C ai r n s C h a m b e r Of C o m m e r ce

24 Hour Connexion is also ‘night watchman’ for hotels and accommodation houses, such as The Lakes, Blue Lagoon and Coral Sands and can handle everything from advising guests of their room number and where to find their key, through to solving problems such as sticky doors and how to work the air-conditioning. It has access to its clients’ reservation systems and can make a lot of bookings after hours. Taking on a dedicated after-hours tourism concierge system such as 24 Hour Connexion is a logical extension to the system Independent Aviation already has in place. Key to part of its success is a centralised, efficient charter management and booking system, together with a 24-hour operations desk, that allows it to provide a discreet, fast response to queries, and monitor, alter and report on the status of charters at any given moment.

TOTALLY WORKWEAR W O R K W E A R

“Your Pathway to Successful Branded Apparel”

At TWW we take great pride in providing our clients the right Business, Casuals and Corporate uniform solutions. In this article, we have highlighted a trusted 6-Step process that we hope will assist you in making the right choice for your next uniform. Step 1 – Determine what you need: Are you after a fully coordinated ‘top to toe’ uniform that is aimed to last the distance and pull the team together or just after something short-term that may only require a top to raise awareness of your group or event. Step 2 – Choose Your Colour: Bold colours like RED or GREEN make you visible from a distance and create a strong brand presence! You may have established team colours that you want to follow? The neutral tones like White, Black and silver work well when subtle branding is preferred and of course there’s the Universal Colours like Teal, Ivory, Midnight Blue that will work with many logos and are always a solid choice! Step3 – Fabric & Features: An important part in the selection process, particularly in the heat of Far North QLD! Take into consideration the ease of caring for the uniform and the conditions it will be subjected too! Cottons and Cotton blends are often more breathable and comfortable but typically have a shorter lifespan and will require more care. Breathable polyester blends are easy to clean, require little or NO pressing but may not be liked by all staff? Your freedom of movement and the type of role you’re in can also determine the best fabrics and features for you! Make sure you create a list of the features you’re after. Step 4 – Consider Costs: Are you going to get a lot of use from your uniform? If so it may be worth the investment and more cost effective in the long run to choose a better quality fabric or design. Are these garments also available in a variety of sizes and styles that will suit both men and women in your team? Or is this a once off uniform and one that is just about the price? Step 5 – Decide your Decoration: The use of a logo or brand mark is a great way to make yourself identifiable and raise your brand awareness. Do you want to be seen from a distance – or – is the subtle tone on tone logo better for your image? Also consider the decoration types – eg: Embroidery, print, transfers – that will suit your garment style and fabric type. Step 6 – Get the Sizes Right: Before you finish ordering what you need, double check that you have the appropriate sizes. It may cost a little extra initially to conduct a staff fit-out but you’ll have happier staff with a uniform that fits and it will no doubt save time and expense in the long run. Good luck and don’t forget that if you’re in the market for a new uniform, please come and see the friendly team at TWW Cairns for a free Styling consultation where we’re sure we can find the right uniform solution for you!
